Enjoy Community Thanksgiving Meals This Weekend

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and this year, no one will go hungry. This weekend, there will be several early community Thanksgiving dinners around town for all, especially those that may not be able to have a meal on Thanksgiving Day. There are also opportunities to help out at these events to make them extra special. On Saturday, November 17, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., is the Communi-

ty Thanksgiving Lunch sponsored by Queens Law Associates and Channel View School for Research (CVSR) PTA, staff and students. The event will be held at CVSR (100-00 Beach Channel Drive) and all are welcome to enjoy a meal. On the menu will be turkey, stuffing, greens, macaroni and cheese, salads and desserts, generously donated by the Bungalow Bar, Fat Cardinal Provisions, Cuisine by Claudette, The World of She, plus community members who

have generously offered to donate dishes. Anyone else who wants to cook for the event is encouraged to contact Marissa Bernowitz on Facebook or by email at mbernowitz@qlanyc.org. CVSR students and staff will be volunteering to serve, but others are welcome to help in two-hour shifts throughout the event and with setup starting at 10 a.m. Contact Marissa for more details. Also on Saturday, November 17, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance is hosting a free Rockaway Thanksgiving Feast at the RISE Center (58-03 Rockaway Beach Blvd). Reservations filled up quick for places like Kennedy’s in Breezy Point and catering company, Ludwig’s, has officially closed off Thanksgiving orders after a high demand, but there are still many great options around town. Some may not think of Thai Rock for turkey right away, but on Thanksgiving Day, they’re trading in Thai Cuisine and cooking up a traditional Thanksgiving meal. You’ll get your turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, greens and gravy, plus coffee and tea and Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream Truffle for dessert. The Brooklyn Hurricanes Football organization is shutting down operations after more than 50 years. In recent years, many Rockaway kids (and coaches) were part of The Hurricanes, which taught kids ages 7 through 13, the fundamentals of football. The sport is attracting fewer and fewer kids these days as parents are understandably reluctant to

have their kids play a sport that comes with such risk. Many friendships were forged through The Hurricanes; many lessons learned. ***** A New York City Councilman plans to introduce a bill that would abolish the Public Advocate job to save the City some money. We hope it gets unanimous approval. The Public Advocate is merely a stepping stone to higher office. Anybody remember what Bill de Blasio did as Public Advocate? Tish James holds the position until she becomes New York State’s Attorney General in January. James didn’t even advocate for the public for better subway service. That would have upset Governor Cuomo and she wanted his backing in the AG race. Ugh. The season on lemonade stands might be over, but that doesn’t stop the entrepreneurial spirit of the Brady family. Last weekend, a new shop appeared on Beach 129th Street. Fiona Brady and her siblings were spotted selling hot chocolate at a

A Cover Up for a Brighter Future By Katie McFadden

It’s the end of an era for one of the iconic wave bus shelters. Late last week, the Surf’s Up mural on the bus shelter at Beach 107th and Shore Front Parkway, was covered up, leaving a blank canvas, and leaving many nearby neighbors wondering, why? Built around 1939 for the World’s Fair, the bus shelters on Shore Front Parkway have long been a Rockaway icon. So much so, that in 2015, when the NYC Parks Department suggested knocking down the Surf’s Up shelter by Beach 107th Street, to make way for the new Sandpiper

ing Rockaway’s bus shelters, that after many years of deterioration, were known as an eyesore. So she began a beautification project, using the murals as her canvas, and painted large, detailed paintings on each of the four bus shelters. In 1999, she painted Surf’s Up, on Beach 107th. The mural contained several surfing figures, with the central piece being a female surfer, to empower females to engage with the sport. However, the mural soon became more personal. “While I was working on it, a lot of people asked to be a part of it. Thomas Intrabartola was a well-loved surfer and lifeguard who died in

Playground being constructed after Hurricane Sandy, there was an uproar from local residents. After hearing plenty of feedback, Parks ultimately decided it would work around the shelter, instead of knocking it down, while constructing the new park. So many were surprised to find that as construction takes place, last week, the mural on the shelter was effectively erased. In the ‘90s, local artist, Esther Grillo, took on the job of restor-

an accident, but a bittersweet necessity. Grillo said she was aware that the mural was going to be covered, and says she even advised the Parks Department to do so, in order to preserve the deteriorating bus shelter. “The structure itself is not stable,” she said, adding that she spent many years trying to renovate each mural, only for her work not to last long. “The shelters are porous and I when I paint the surface, water comes in from the roof and walls, and it kept causing the paint to crack. I told Parks that unless they waterproof the roof and back surfaces, I can’t fix them anymore because it’s too labor intensive for it to only last until the next rain,” Grillo said. The Parks Department confirmed what Grillo said. “The bus shelter is being stabilized as part of the $3.68 million Sandpiper Playground reconstruction project,” a Parks spokesperson said. “Though the 1939 bus shelter substantially survived Hurricane

Sandy, it was cracked and the reinforcement underneath the concrete was exposed in some areas. In order to stabilize it and make sure it’s structurally sound, our contractors needed to sandblast areas and replace the concrete.” While covering the mural was a necessity, the bus shelter won’t go bare. Standing now as a blank canvas, the bus shelter will once again be painted, whether it’s by Esther Grillo herself, or another local organization. Grillo says she’s willing to paint it again, if the circumstances are right. “I’ll do it again if they add waterproofing elements. Parks has already been calling me, asking about estimates for the paint because local groups are trying to raise funds for it. They’re saying the site may be ready to paint in the spring. I think I’ll do it again if everything falls into place,” she said, adding that if she’s the one to repaint it, she’ll be enlisting the help of young artists that she can mentor, as she has done in years past. So don’t fret, Rockaway. The bus shelter’s future may once again be bright.

A Reason for Thanks in the Season of Giving By Katie McFadden

For the past year and a half, a wheelchair-bound U.S. Army Veteran who served in the Vietnam War, has been using the YMCA for not only personal rehabilitation, but as a place to shower. Since moving to a Dayton Towers East building, he hasn’t been able to use the bathroom in his own apartment. But that’s about to change. Just as we come off the tails of Veterans Day and enter a holiday season of giving, the veteran will have much to be thankful for as a group of organizations and individuals, including FDNY Boxing, the Graybeards, Rockaway WISH and local contractor Eric Jahrnes, have come together to give their thanks to him in a big way. For the past few years, FDNY Bravest Boxing has brought the ring to St. Camillus for Thrilla in Camilla, an event that raises money for Building Homes for Heroes, an organization that builds or renovates homes for

U.S. veterans who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, who are in need of an accessible residence. At this year’s Thrilla in Camilla in July, a local veteran in need of some help himself came out to show his support for the event. Like many, the Vietnam vet, who chose to remain anonymous, was drafted at the time of the Vietnam War. He told The Rockaway Times that he was in Vietnam for about nine months in 1967. With his MOS, or mili-

tary job, being a printer, the veteran says he was one of the lucky ones. “I was a printer, so I had a behind the scenes job, so I was lucky in that way. But I had gone to the New York School of Printing and about 80 of us from the school were drafted, and just a little more than half of us came back,� he said. The veteran may have been lucky to come back, but he dealt with a big personal hardship in October 2007, when he suffered

a stroke that left him paralyzed on the left side of his body, and changed his life forever. No longer able to work, the veteran and his wife lost their home in Westchester. However about a year and a half ago, he was able to get into the affordable Mitchell-Lama development at 8000 Shore Front Parkway. But the apartment brought on a new challenge. While the veteran’s former home was accessible, the apartment is not. He resorted to going to the local YMCA to participate in water aerobics, which he says has helped with his mobility, but also to utilize the bathroom and shower there. The veteran says the building managers tried to help by installing a higher toilet, but with a narrow doorway to get into the bathroom, it wasn’t much help. or even consider giving me bar rails because I have a bathtub and they said it wasn’t safe to get in and out of it, even if I had railings. They didn’t want to be liable if I fell and it became an insurance issue,” he said. With nowhere else to turn, the veteran went to Thrilla in Camilla in July. When FDNY Bravest Boxing president Bobby McGuire learned of his story, he was determined to take action. “It’s a shame when you think of Vietnam veterans, they were spit on and weren’t treated like any other veterans and no one really helps these guys, so we thought this was the right thing to do,” McGuire said. However, going through Building Homes for Heroes wasn’t an option. “Unfortunately they were constricted by their bylaws and could only allocate funds for Afghanistan and Iraq veterans,” McGuire said. That wasn’t going to stop him. FDNY Bravest Boxing offered to donate the funds needed to renovate the veteran’s bathroom, but a contractor

That’s when McGuire turned to another local organization that’s big on helping those in need, including veterans. “The Graybeards have been doing this stuff for years, so I initially contacted president Joe Keenan to ask if he knew a contractor that could help and he immediately said he wanted to be a part of this,” McGuire said. The Graybeards pitched in $2,500 and when those in sister organization, Rockaway WISH, learned of the story, the group contributed an extra $500. With the funding in hand, a contractor was still needed, and a stroke of luck led them to Eric Jahrnes, who owns the local contracting business, Final Home Renovations. “Work was very slow this year, so we’ve been doing a lot of small projects and trying to find things to keep our guys busy, so I put up a post on a Rockaway business Facebook page, saying that since the community has supported us for the last 10 years, we wanted to give back, so if anyone knew of someone that need-

ed repairs on their house and couldn’t afford it, we’d get the job done,” Jahrnes said. That’s when someone from Building Homes for Heroes spotted the post and asked Jahrnes if he’d be willing to help a local veteran. For Jahrnes, it was a no brainer. “There’s nobody I’d rather do it for than for somebody who served our country. The military is one of the most important things in this country and I don’t think our vets are taken care of enough,” he said.

Page 13 Jarhnes says he initially offered to do the work for free, but the funding from FDNY Boxing, the Graybeards and WISH will help cover the cost of materials and labor for the not-for-profit project. Starting either this week, or after Thanksgiving, construction will begin to give the veteran a new, handicap bathroom. “We’re going to remove his tub and put in a walk-in shower and widen the doorway so he can get his wheelchair in there, and we’ll add a handicap accessible sink,” Jahrnes explained, adding that the project should take only five days to complete. “We’re getting the job done and hopefully this guy will have a much easier life because of it,” McGuire said. As we approach a day of giving thanks, the veteran says he could not be more thankful for FDNY Boxing, the Graybeards, WISH and Jarhnes coming together to help him. “I’m so grateful that they’re doing this. I’ve been, living here for a year and a half without being able to use my bathroom. This is really going to be a big help,” he said.

And The Stockings Will be Hung For A Veteran in Need By Kami-Leigh Agard

With Veterans Day behind us, after we remember and celebrate the lives of our beloved service members who actively served in defending American freedom — does the tribute end there? Not for born and bred Rockaway local, Eugene Brennan, an FDNY firefighter serving in Ladder 35 in upper Manhattan, who since 2011, has made it his business to make the holidays memorable for these American heroes through his organization, Stockings For A Cause. Last year, Brennan was able to raise $30K of which 100 percent of the proceeds went to a veteran in need, and this year, he’s hoping the community comes together to exceed that holiday gift for this year’s honoree, Mark Holbert and his family. Brennan calls Sergeant First Class (SFC) Mark Holbert, “a true American hero.” Holbert was deployed to Afghanistan three times with no serious in-

jury. However, on his fourth deployment in 2010, he was severely injured by an IED (improvised explosive device), which left the Green Beret a double amputee with a missing thumb and finger, along with nerve damage up his arm, and both legs gone below the knee. According to a moving anecdote of Holbert’s story on helpingahero.org: "When the IED went off, he knew that he was injured. He saw immediately that his thumb had been amputated,

and he had suffered severe damage to his hands. He did not look down at his legs, because he just knew that they were missing, so he just yelled for his Medic. Once the helicopter landed, and he was loaded on board, he realized that both legs were amputated above his knees. Today, since his injuries, he has been relearning to walk. Holbert is a tried and true survivor. He re-certified his scuba licenses, and completed the Marine Corps Marathon, the Army 10-Miler, and the 200mile American Odyssey relay race twice. He relearned playing golf, and is driving again." Holbert resides in Virginia, with his wife and two children, in a house that needs to be made accessible with "smart home” features. Smart home technology helps veterans with disabilities finish regular household duties that many take for granted. Some of these upgrades include smart thermostats, which are important for veterans with amputations to help regulate

body temperature; smart home security devices such as security cameras, alarms, and sensors; lighting and appliance control; and motorized furniture and appliances for veterans who have restricted mobility. When asked why he is so dedicated to helping veterans like Holbert, Brennan said, “After a horrific time with 9/11, I wanted to turn our sadness into a festive, paying it forward time of helping our veterans who defend our country every day, thousands of miles away from their families. I am part owner of the bar, Park Avenue Tavern, (one of In Good Company’s bars and restaurants, including Bungalow Bar), and we came up with the idea of decorating the bar with holiday stockings, labeled with folks’ names who donated to a wounded warrior. “These men and women, while fighting the good fight, endure so many challenges to make sure we have our freedom as Americans. There are many charities out there that aid our vets, but our goal was to make sure 100 percent of the proceeds went to a vet without the deficits of administrative fees. Again, 100 percent of the money raised goes toward a vet and their family, no holds barred.” According to Brennan, all donations received are recorded through the Rockaway Graybeards, a local 501C3 nonprofit, where donators can receive a receipt for a write off. “I grew up watching the great people involved with the Rockaway Graybeards. I’ve seen what they have done for the community for decades, and they’ve been such an inspiration to me. And gratefully, they saw what I was trying to do with Stockings For A Cause, and got right on board," Brennan said.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2018 According to Brennan, Stockings For A Cause grew from one participating bar to more than 25, located in both Rockaway and Manhattan. In Rockaway, participating bars and restaurants include Bungalow Bar, The Wharf, Jameson’s, Pico; and in Breezy Point, the Sugar Bowl and Kennedy’s. “Any other bars, cafes or restaurants that want to participate, we are more than happy to work with them. This is all about Rockaway coming out strong to help a veteran and his family for the holidays,” Brennan said. Anyone can head to one of the participating bars to make a donation starting at $20, and have a stocking hung in their name. On Saturday, December 1 starting at 2 p.m., Brennan and his friend, Joseph O’Grady will be bartending at Jameson’s for a special Stocking For A Cause event. “Folks can come in and hang a stocking with their names labeled on it. All tips we collect go towards Holbert and his family. They need a ‘smart home’ and why not help to make it even “smarter!” Brennan said.

Last year, Stockings For A Cause was able to help veteran, SFC Thomas Janusz, and his family repair their home and pay some of his wife’s nursing school loans. Jamusz spent nearly 12 years in the U.S. Army, serving three year-long deployments; twice to Iraq and once in Afghanistan. As an Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team leader in Afghanistan, he was severely wounded when an IED he was disarming, exploded in his hands, leading to the loss of his left leg and left hand, along with numerous other injuries. His recovery lasted almost two years at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. “We were so happy to raise $30K for Thomas. He is a father and husband, who sacrificed himself for our freedom, thankfully, we were able to show our appreciation,” Brennan said. Stockings For A Cause kicks

Community Board 14 November Meeting Recap By Katie McFadden

Coming off the latest Election Day, that resulted in New Yorkers voting yes to term limits for Community Board members, the elephant in the room was barely mentioned at Tuesday’s Community Board 14 (CB14) meeting at the Knights of Columbus, but plenty of other issues were brought up, from land use to park updates and more. Tuesday night’s meeting kicked off with the recently re-elected Senator Joe Addabbo briefly addressing term limits, and thanking the CB members for volunteering their time. He also provided a brief update on the wind farm proposal, saying that the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority is now in the process of looking for areas that might be interested in having a wind farm off their waters, and is actively seeking community input. James Johnson, a representative from Comptroller Stringer’s office, said the comptroller is

currently looking into NYCHA issues, particularly broken doors on buildings and advised that if anyone in a NYCHA property is having this or another issue, to contact the constituent services department at 212-6693916. CB14 District Manager Jon Gaska gave a heads up about an Economic Development Committee meeting at 7 p.m. on November 27 at the Knights, that will focus on an EDC update on the courthouse. He also advised that if anyone is willing to shovel snow for seniors and other residents this winter, to contact his office. Gaska also mentioned that CB14 will be getting some technology upgrades, including better internet, a new website and a new phone system. Finally, he also said that a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Far Rockaway Library will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 19. Chair Dolores Orr said that NY Rising will be sending a new representative to December’s CB14

meeting to discuss local projects that have long been ignored, but with the time to use the money for these projects winding down, discussions are now vital. Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato thanked the crowd for her re-election and announced some upcoming events such as various Naloxone training sessions coming up in December and a workshop on how to finance college at 6 p.m. on November 20 at the YMCA. Selvena Brooks Powers and Nantasha Williams of the Port Authority were on hand to discuss the JFK Airport Redevelopment Plan that will bring many jobs and opportunities for business owners. inski of the Rockaway Beach Civic Association, all spoke on their disappointment in CB14 over how October’s meeting ended. At the last meeting, a member proposed creating an ad hoc committee to focus on beach issues as the Army Corps of Engineers starts its protection project. The idea was supported, but ultimately shot down because people said it would be unfair to the bayside residents, and the meeting came to an abrupt end so people could catch the latest Yankees game. Hilger, Jones and Klapinski said that the beach is still facing many issues with no plan for next year’s beach closure area, dangerous metal and wooden spikes being found on the beach, and the Army Corps plan still coming down the pipeline. Then a resident of Dayton Towers complained to the Board about trying to change his shareholder status to his own name, instead of a resident that is deceased, and has become frustrated after being ignored by local elected officials. Jon Gaska said he would meet with him. After getting into a personal tiff with Jon Gaska over an apology, Democratic District Leader Lew Simon provided some updates. He’s trying to get Marine Parkway Bridge closures to start at

midnight instead of 11 p.m. for the holiday season, but hinted that the work should stop completely and a new bridge should be built. He also said he’s working on the horrendous mail issue and hopes to have USPS representatives come to a meeting on November 29. Simon also said the Beach 116th Christmas tree lighting will be at 5 p.m. on December 1, and the menorah lighting will take place at 5:30 p.m. on December 5. Kate Wells and Marva Kerwin spoke about a new group called Rockaway Revolutions that is advocating for racial justice, political transparency and sustainable environment. They’ve invited anti-racism speaker Tim Wise to speak at a meeting at 11 a.m. on November 17 at First Congregational Church on Beach 94th Street. Anyone interested in attending should email rockawayrevolutions@gmail.com Lisa George from Senator Sanders’ office also gave a heads up about some events including property tax exemption events that will occur throughout the district, including in Far Rocka-

way (1931 Mott Ave, Suit 305) on January 18 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. She also advised people, that in event of street flooding, to call Sanders’ office (718-327-7017) and report the location or send photos, as the state may be looking to help rectify the situation. During the Land Use Committee presentation, there was one item about rezoning at 11-02 Plainview Avenue in Far Rockaway, in order for a local man and business owner to build a three-story single-family home. The representative said the man obtained letters of support from 57 neighbors. A motion was made to approve the rezoning and it passed. The Parks Committee report included three projects. Further discussions were had about the planned Bay Breeze Park and kayak launch at Beach 88th Street. CB14 rejected the last plan for the park as it lacked some elements. The new plan will now include a mounded lawn instead of a salt marsh, a larger playground, an extended boathouse that allows for more storage, a shaded overhead area,

Page 17 binocular stations, foot showers and more. The new plan was approved. Construction is expected to begin in 2020. The next item was about reconstructing the Bayside Playground comfort station near Scholars’ Academy. The plan calls for raising the bathroom so it is more resilient, adding a new ADA compliant ramp, replacing damaged trees and more. The committee approved the project, under the condition that it be completed within 12 months, instead of 18 months, so that the school isn’t negatively impacted by the construction on the bathroom that is used during recess. A motion was made to approve the project. Another item was brought up about another school/Parks project, the Seaside Playground by Beach 109th Street. A committee came together to advocate for upgrades to the playground, but it requires funding that is late to be approved for this year’s budget, which was already submitted. The committee was advised to bring up the issue next year so it can be added to next year’s budget.

Lime Picking Dear Editor: An inconsiderate neighbor left a Lime bike blocking the sidewalk in front of my house, last Friday night just after midnight. My front security camera captured the image of the man leaving it. I thought the bike might be there for a day or two, and then retrieved by Lime as they had stated when starting the program. However, a week later, after two calls to customer service, reaching one in the Philip-

The Rockaway Times pines and one in Spain, the bike remains. I was promised priority removal in both instances. I have also noticed a lot of the bikes in the neighborhood staying for more than 48 hours. Although a good idea in the beginning of the program, I feel they are starting to become a nuisance and eyesore in the community. I will let you know if I have to notify them a third time. Update: Lime hadn't picked up bike by 10 a.m. Saturday, November 10. Called another foreign nation and was reassured that this time someone will come and pick up the abandoned bike, and will escalate the complaint. Of course they apologized profusely. On Saturday, November 10th at 3:30 p.m. EAN Holdings from Tulsa Oklahoma picked up the bike in a white van. My wife, Paula, said no wonder it took so long, they had a long drive! Ed Antonio

On Sunday, November 11, local veterans gathered with American Legion Daniel M. O’Connell Post #272 to commemorate Veterans Day. Queens BP Katz Primed For Amazon Opposing tax giveaways and fearing cost of living spikes, some Queens residents and politicians voiced opposition to the news that Amazon had chosen Long Island City as one of its two new headquarters (the other being Northern Virginia). Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, however, stated full-throated support. In a statement, the BP said: “Long Island City – New York’s emerging tech hub – is ‘primed’ for Amazon. Amazon is a timely fit for the borough, given the Tech Plan we commissioned years ago funded by Governor Cuomo to create the city’s leading tech ecosystem, coupled with Mayor de Blasio’s $180 million in new investments for infrastructure improvements unveiled several weeks ago for schools, transportation and open space. With its organic

growth, wealth of local talent and inherent global assets to foster innovation, Queens offers a dynamic mixed-use community where workers can live, ideas can synergize, and businesses can flourish. New companies should take note, however, that New York is a union town. I have full faith that the City and State will be able to resolve all outstanding issues including organized labor, infrastructure and capacity concerns." Far Rockaway Center Honors Its Veterans Centers Health Care’s Far Rockaway center (13-11 Virginia Street) made sure not to forget its resident veterans by hosting a ceremony in honor of Veterans Day. On Wednesday, November 7, James Johnson, E7, from the ROTC program at St. John’s University, was accompanied by active duty Sergeant Maureen Daley, who presented the center and its veterans with a flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol and a certificate, in a cherry wood display case. The encased flag will hang at the Center’s newly unveiled “Wall of Honor.� Bagpiper Danny Spreig was also on hand to play some music during the event. The center also recognized its resident veterans such as Air Force Lieutenant Joseph Zeigler, Navy seaman Victor Alamo, Marine Sergeant Deon Simon, Army Sergeant Lenward McBride, among others. The Rest I Make Up Maria Irene Fornes was a famous Cuban born playwright. She passed away on October 30, 2018. I was unaware of who she was until someone mentioned, “The Rest I Make Up,” referring to a beautiful documentary about her wonderful life. She taught writers how to become unstuck when they experienced writer’s block. She encouraged people to be who they are and go with the flow of their lives, not to be afraid to make mistakes and have courage and believe in themselves. She never cared what

the critics wrote. “I am myself. Being an artist is not a way of earning a living but rather a way of living a life.” Maria liked to be called Irene. In the documentary, she is being filmed in the midst of dementia, but she proudly announces, “I am who I am.” Imagine a world where we accepted each other for exactly who we are. The clothes we choose to wear are not fashion-driven but rather personal preference. We didn’t plug into social media on a daily basis to check in. We choose

to have the freedom to be who we are. Feelings of insecurity are non-existent because we support one another for our uniqueness. Our goal in life is to be happy and content, living from a place of gratitude for all that we have. So often we are revealing only a small part of our precious lives because we are afraid of what someone thinks about us. Life is meant to be fully lived. No regrets. Let go of what you think your life should be. Just live your life and flow effortlessly. Be present in the now. Cultivate a new relationship with your inner life. The landscape is vast and expansive. When we work from the inside out, we feel grounded and supported. We let go of expectations and judgments, being able to connect to something higher than ourselves.

The Rockaway Times I love the title of the documentary, “The Rest I Make Up.” Often, we do that in life itself. We have a plan and then we suddenly begin to make it up as we go along. For example, often I may plan a yoga class to teach and then follow my intuition and begin to make it up along the way. It becomes an experience and we flow with the energy in the room. It is not a performance but rather a practice of connecting to one another. I learn to accept my offerings and what I have to teach on that particular day. I am who I am. Learning to teach people to become unstuck in their bodies, minds and spirits. Most days it is organic, only when I am not connected to myself, is it awkward. Do not try to change who you are, rather embrace your spirit. Laugh often, be kind, be free, be you! It is liberating and authentic. I beg you to live a life worth living. Do not let anyone judge you and tell you how to live your life. You have one crazy life to live. Live it well.

By Beth Hanning SLOW DOWN MOMS So I posted a Facebook status asking for ideas and thank you to all who responded. One mom wanted me to write about the moms “juggling it all.” It got me thinking about it and how we as moms create some of the extra work we perform. A few years ago, a mom was stressing out to me about her second-grader’s homework. She specifically was overworked about the projects. She was literally going crazy making sure they were perfect. I asked her: “In the scope of things, is this the most impor-

tant grade in school?” Will colleges say, “How did you do on that Saint project back in November 2018?” The answer is no. Stop trying to be the Pinterest mom whose project clearly looks as if you created it and not your second-grader. I truly believe as a ninth-grade teacher, that if they can read on grade level and write basic sentence structures in a three paragraph essay, I can work with those students. So when you are going crazy about a project, ask yourself: Can my children read? Can they write? If

the answer to these two questions is yes, then let them do the project on their own and receive a grade they deserve. I do not teach the lower grades, but if I did, I would give higher grades to students I knew completed the project themselves. It is quite clear when an adult has completed a project. Another thing: children do not need to do every single activity/sport that is offered to them. I thought my two daughters participated in a lot of activities, which was C.Y.O. sports and one travel team of the sport they enjoyed the most. Now I see kids playing on multiple travel teams and more than one sport per season. Kids are taking advanced classes, playing an instrument and playing one or two sports. No wonder so many kids today have anxiety; we want them to succeed in multiple activities. It is okay if they graduate middle school without a Regents exam under their belt. Also, many of the kids attend non-Regents schools and the exam is moot. Also, moms,

Page 29 some high schools want an 85 on the algebra Regents or the kids retake the class. Maybe they won’t take an advanced placement class or a college class. I didn’t and I feel I am okay. Also: it is okay for students to fail or feel disappointment. Children are resilient. They can overcome obstacles if you allow them to. I know I did not believe when my children were young that they could do this, but a very wise woman told me: “Beth, kids are resilient, they will be fine.” They were. It will be okay if you tell them they cannot dance five days a week, take piano lessons, or swim on two different teams. They will be okay. Moms, stop trying to do it all.

ITCHY Scabies is a contagious skin infestation caused by microscopic, eight-legged human itch mites. It should not be mistaken for bed bugs, which are visible, not microscopic. Scabies was once called the seven-year itch (not to be confused with the movie of the same name). The mites, which cannot survive outside of human skin for more than two or three days, burrow under the skin and lay eggs. Scabies is transmitted by prolonged direct person-to-person contact or through objects that carry the mites such as clothing and bedding. A quick handshake or hug will not usually cause transmission. Scabies is common in

crowded populations such as jails, refugee camps, child care centers, and nursing homes. It is most common in children. Because it is a human parasite, household pets are usually not affected. A severe variant of scabies is Norwegian, or crusted, scabies. This is commonly seen in people with weakened immune systems and it causes a thick, yellow-gray crust on the skin. Whereas people with scabies may have up to one hundred mites under their skin, those with the Norwegian variant may have hundreds of thousands of mites. Scabies causes an intense, itchy rash that worsens at night.

The rash usually consists of tiny, raised red bumps that often appear in a linear array. The rash is linear because as the mite burrows through the skin, it lays eggs. The rash may resemble pimples or bug bites. The rash typically appears between the fingers and toes, under jewelry or watches at the wrist, and in skin folds at the armpits, groin, and genitals. Symptoms may appear between two to six weeks after infestation, however people may be contagious before symptoms appear. Infants with scabies may appear irritable, not wanting to sleep or eat, and commonly have a rash on their palms or soles of the feet. Infants may also have the rash on their face, scalp, and neck, which is rare in adults. The diagnosis of scabies is usually made by taking a skin scraping and examining it under a microscope. Treatment requires killing the mites with a prescribed cream or oral medication. There is no effective over-the-counter medication for it. Permethrin five percent, is the most commonly prescribed cream. It is applied from the

The Rockaway Times neck to the toes, left on for 8 to 14 hours, then washed off. The treatment is then repeated a week later. Crusted scabies requires multiple treatments. The itching and rash may persist for up to four weeks after the treatment is concluded, even though all the mites have been killed. Because scabies is highly contagious, children should be kept out of school until the treatment is concluded. In addition, all clothing, bed linens, and towels should be washed in hot water, then dried at a high temperature. Any clothing that must be dry-cleaned should be kept in isolation for at least three or four days, and then cleaned. All carpeting should be thoroughly vacuumed. My father left me some beautiful postcards, like this one of Solomon’s Castle, also known as Castle-Las. Built by Louis A. Solomon, a wealthy New York merchant/businessman, who spent summers in Far Rockaway, the “castle” was located on what is now Bayswater Park. The postcard shows the “castle” around 1910. Reports say it went on fire in 1921 and it was reported as demolished around 1925. Katie Lucev is the daughter of the late Rockaway Beach Historian, Emil R. Lucev Sr. (1933-2018).

Serves: 6 Ingredients: 4-5 boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cubed 1 – 10 ounce can low sodium chicken broth (unless you have homemade) 1 – 10 ounce can cream of celery soup 1 – 10 ounce can cream of chicken soup ½ cup flour ½ teaspoon garlic salt ½ teaspoon ground black pepper 1 cup diced onion 1 cup of diced celery 1 cup frozen peas and carrots 1 – 16 ounce tube refrigerated

Pillsbury Buttermilk Biscuits Directions: Place all the broths in the slow cooker and mix. (It will be a little lumpy due to the creamed soup). Add the diced chicken and stir. Sprinkle the salt, pepper and garlic salt and mix again. Cover and cook on low 4-5 hours. Take the biscuits out of the refrigerator and flatten them with the palm of your hand. Then cut the biscuits into strips and then in half. Pour ½ cup of flour in a medium bowl. Add a little salt and pepper. Toss the biscuits to coat. Drop the coated biscuits into the crockpot, gently pushing the biscuits under the broth. Now add the frozen peas and gently mix again. Cover and cook 2 hours on low.

The Literary Chick Review: Blood Brothers by Ernst Haffner The play, Cabaret, heBy Marilyn Macron, avily informs Esq. aka modern perMaria Cowhey ceptions of Weimar, Germany. We recall garter clad Liza Minnelli and elegant Joel Grey slinking their way through a decadent underworld of sex and style. It all seems so glamorous, but the reality for most Germans at the time was colder, duller and much more miserable. Blood Brothers, a novel written by journalist Ernst Haffner in 1932, delves beneath the glossy veneer of Berlin nightlife to relate the story of a gang of German street boys on the eve of Hitler’s rise to power. Haffner’s writing is of the Neue Sachlichkeit, or New Objectivity or realism, which rejects romanticism. He writes a collage of the exploits and exploitation of these boys in a non-emotional, journalistic style, relying on facts to indict German society and social

inequality, rather than the gang members. In this, his prose pairs well with the vitriolic caricatures of anti-Nazi artist George Grosz, a contemporary of Haffner’s who left Germany for the U.S. in 1933. Haffner’s, tough, troubled, vulnerable boys are not the picturesque blond, blueeyed gods the Nazis sought to portray their youth as. They are social outsiders, the type of people the Nazi’s labeled “Asoziale” and persecuted. Haffner, in Blood Brothers, deftly shows the absurdity of society demonizing those who steal in order to live their very lives. He writes, “Their birth and early infancy coincided with the war and the years after. From the moment they took their first uncertain steps, they were on their own. Father was at the front or already listed missing. Mother was turning grenades or coughing her lungs out a few grams at a time in explosives factories. The kids with their

turnip bellies – not even potato bellies – were always out for something to eat in courtyards and streets. As they grew older, gangs of them went out stealing. Malignant little beasts.” Jonny, their leader by virtue of his cold cunning, intellect, and ruthlessness, guides them through the cold, hostile streets, organizing their thievery. He is the thread that gives these vulnerable boys a sense of belonging and safety. This kind of life can’t be lived for long without something going wrong, and something does. In addition to Jonny, we read of Ludwig, who is arrested when he is tricked into attempting to claim a stolen baggage ticket, and of Willi, who runs away from a home for underage youth after he is hit once too often, making his way to Berlin by strapping himself beneath the train for the journey, and of Fredrick, who advocates graduating from petty crime to

major theft, resulting in the gang’s downfall. One cannot survive the streets of Berlin alone. “Berlin – endless, merciless Berlin – is too much for anyone on their own… If there’s two of you, it feels different. A night is only half as long and half as cold; even hunger is only half as bad.” Haffner’s humane depiction of the gang members in his book might have been a grave political error. The Nazis burned and banned Blood Brothers within a year of it being first published. Sometime after, the writers’ union affiliated with the Third Reich, the Reichsschrifttumskammer, summoned him to appear. It is believed that Haffner complied. He was never seen again. If Jamal Khashoggi’s recent disappearance is alarming, it’s because we’ve seen this sort of thing before.

Food Drive a Success Last weekend, the 100th Precinct Community Council led another successful food drive. Members of the Council and volunteers set up a table outside of the Rockaway Park Stop and Shop supermarket and collected canned and boxed goods. They later brought all of the food collections to St. Camillus Church, for the church’s food pantry. Father Ahlemeyer was thankful for all of the donations. Congratulations to the Council and all of those who donated, for a job well done.

Rockaway Remembers Flight 587 By Katie McFadden On the morning of Monday, November 12, hundreds gathered on Beach 116th Street for a ceremony in remembrance of those who died in the crash of American Airlines Flight 587, 17 years ago. The ceremony was attended by friends and family of the 265 victims, which included 251 passengers and nine crewmembers on the Dominican Republic-bound flight, and five victims on the ground who were killed when the plane came crashing down in Belle Harbor. The event, which was also attended by Mayor Bill de Blasio, included opening prayers by Father Eric Cruz of St. John Chrysostom Catholic Parish, a ringing of a bell to mark a moment of silence, and then the reading of all of the names of the victims by Raphaela Frias, Ana Reyes, Freddy Rodriguez, and Karen Tavarez. De Blasio then offered some words to

those in attendance. “Seventeen years have passed. As I was talking to some of you gathered here today, we’re all in a way unable to imagine that it’s been fully 17 years. And that morning started out like any other day, and then tragedy struck and everyone’s lives were changed. Two hundred and sixty-five people lost, and we remember them here and they are remembered throughout the Dominican Republic,” de Blasio said. “We remember those who were lost in Belle Harbor and we remember how much it has been a sense of loss that has resonated for 17 years.” De Blasio also acknowledged the first responders that arrived at the plane crash scene on that day in 2001. “We take comfort also from the fact that even in the midst of that tragedy, we saw heroism, we saw the men and women of the NYPD and the FDNY come forward to do all they could to save lives. That heroism reminds us every day of the good in humanity. And we take comfort in the bonds that formed between all of the families here, bonds formed in tragedy, but still deep bonds of love and friendship and respect.” The ceremony ended with guests approaching the Flight 587 memorial and leaving flowers by the names of their

AmpSurf Partners With U.S. Department Of Veterans Affairs As we celebrate Veterans Day, AmpSurf is excited to announce that it has partnered again this year with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. AmpSurf was recently awarded an $80,000+ grant to promote and support veterans and their families around the country in their participation in adaptive surf therapy clinics hosted by AmpSurf and our partners. AmpSurf is excited to offer adaptive surf therapy to the veteran community via our three chapters located in California, New England, and New York. Over the past few years, the local Rockaway AmpSurf chapter has assisted veterans with the Hope for the Warriors weekend and through other surf clinics with veterans on Beach 67th Street. As part of this partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, AmpSurf will also award 10 Adaptive Surf

Competitor grants. These will be awarded to Veterans who use physical adaptations to surf and will compete in at least 5 competitive adaptive surf events. AmpSurf has been doing Adaptive Surf Therapy clinics since 2003 and continues to share the healing power of the ocean and Adaptive Surf Therapy with all people living with disabilities.
