Williams, Katz and Yes Votes Dominate Election By Katie McFadden

The election results are in. Public Advocate Jumaane Williams will continue his role. Queens Borough President Melinda Katz will be the next Queens District Attorney. And every ballot measure was approved. According to the early numbers, voter turnout was once again low in this year’s election. With about 90% of precincts reporting, only about 723K voters came out in New York City, meaning roughly 17% of voters participated. This year, for the first time ever, New Yorkers were also able to vote more than a full week ahead of the election through the process of Early Voting. For that process? Only 1.14% percent of voters participated. In the Public Advocate race, Democrat Jumaane Williams held on to his title in a landslide, receiving 78% of the vote, while Republican Joseph Borelli, who ran on an anti-de Blasio

campaign, claimed 20% of the vote. In the borough of Queens, Williams had 133K votes, while Borelli had 49K. The race for Queens District Attorney had big local interest. Democrat Melinda Katz came on top in a landslide, winning about 75% of the vote and Joe Murray, a Democrat running on the Republican ticket against progressive ideals, took just 25% of the vote. Interestingly enough, out of the 184K votes, nearly 2,000 were write-ins, many of which were for Tiffany Cabán, who lost the primary election to Katz after a recount and appeal process that ended in the summer. In Assembly District 23, which accounts for much of the Rockaway peninsula and Broad Channel, the race was close. Katz had 7,242 votes, while Murray had 6,859. In the breakdown, Murray dominated the vote on much of the west end of the peninsula, while Katz was the favorite on the east end. She also won the overwhelming

majority in Assembly District 31, which accounts for parts of Far Rockaway and other southeast Queens neighborhoods. In the race for Justice of the Supreme Court 11th District, Broad Channel resident John C. Spataro was left out in the cold. In this category, voters had a choice of six of the nine candidates. The six with the highest votes were Donna-Marie E. Goglia, with the majority, followed by Stephen A. Knopf, Wyatt N. Gibbons, Lourdes M. Ventura, Phillipm Hom and Maurice Muir. All six ran on the Democratic party. Out of the choices, Spataro, a Republican, came in dead last, with just 4.54% of the vote. This year’s election also included five major ballot measures for New Yorkers to vote on. Question One concerned ranked choice voting, a system that allows voters to choose multiple candidates for an office without making extra trips to the polls during primary and special elections. Question Two

concerned the expansion of police oversight, giving more power to the Civilian Complaint Review Board. Question Three was about revolving door reforms to limit conflicts of interest within city government. Question Four concerned a city budget issue, allowing the City to use a revenue stabilization fund, or “rainy day fund,” to save money for use in future years, such as to address unexpected financial hardships. Lastly, Question Five was about expanding the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP) by giving Community Boards more time to review applications and more. All five measures were passed with an overwhelming Yes vote for each. Each measure had anywhere from 72-78% Yes votes. What’s next? With Katz leaving her position as borough president, a special election will be held for the position early next year. Several candidates have already begun their campaigns in anticipation of this election.

BOYLEING POINTS

Stuck On Words I’m no Whit’s End but I’ve dropped an F-bomb once or twice in my life. Sometimes in the same effin’ sentence. Note to all my lady friends in the Golden Age club: I know my mother is rolling her eyes in heaven and tsk, tsking. She’d say it’s not a sin to curse but I am “contributing to the coarsening of the language.” Coarsening. There’s a word you don’t get to use too effin’ often. Point is, ladies, you don’t have to tell me I should know better. I know, I know. Of course, some of my granny

friends love the salty talk and make me blush when they drop the words on me. I’m still trying to get over the little old lady who yelled from the sidewalk as I biked past: Good f**kin column this week, Kevin! I think she was on her way to church. Coarsening or not, an F-bomb can be a very valuable form of communication. It’s about the best way to emphasize a point. But if you use it more than once, it starts to lose its strength, its

shock value. If you use it more than three times, then people no longer care what you’re talking about; they just wait for the next bomb. You could be talking about somebody being kidnapped and if you add too many Fs in there, the listeners will forget there’s been a kidnapping and they’ll be saying to themselves: this guy curses a lot. When he is gonna stop? Does he realize how he sounds? I was reminded of the overuse of a word or phrase while getting a real estate tour down South last weekend. The agent had the habit of answering questions by saying, “To be honest with you” or “To tell you the truth.” Now, since I met this guy five minutes earlier, I was wondering why I had gained his trust. He was gonna be honest with me. Just me. Not the other guy. He was gonna tell me the truth. When I asked how many bedrooms the place had, he started by saying, “To tell ya the truth.” At that point he could have said the place had 40 bedrooms but

Page 5 just one bath and I wouldn’t have heard. I looked at my significant wife and a friend who had joined us for the tour. I gave them the look, like, you’re hearing what I’m hearing right? My friend is a bit of a wiseass so when she asked a question she began by saying, “John, tell me the truth.” Or “John, be honest with me. What’s the square footage?” The gibe went over his head, of course. But he did change gears a bit and started saying, “In my opinion,” to make a statement whether an opinion was warranted or not. We were trying to pay attention to the updated cabinets in the kitchen but John said, “I don’t want to repeat myself” at which point he repeated himself. I asked John if the windows were new, but I really wanted to know if I could jump out of them because I couldn’t take another “To be honest with you.” Ten minutes after we left, I couldn’t remember the condo and cursed the whole way home.

Cheers to 100 Years for VFW Post 260 By Katie McFadden

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Prince-Wynn Post 260 has been serving veterans for 100 years and on Saturday, November 9, they’ll be celebrating the centennial with an all-day party. The Veterans of Foreign Affairs, the nation’s oldest major war veterans’ association, got its start around 1899, when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service. The VFW Prince-Wynn Post 260 was established in 1919. Originally based in Brooklyn as the Joseph A. Wynn Post No. 260, the Post has called Broad Channel home since it came to the island neighborhood on June 15, 1976. It was brought to town by the late George Riekers, who served as its commander several times. The Post is located at 705 Shad Creek Road, the former Democratic Club, and on Saturday, veterans, friends, family and community members will all gather there to celebrate 100 years of Post 260’s service to those who served abroad. In those 100 years, the VFW Prince-Wynn Post 260 has gone above and beyond, not just for local veterans, but for the Broad Channel community. For veterans, Post 260 serves as a hub for veterans of foreign wars to gather, and its auxiliary members do what they can to help them at the hall or bring their services to those who can’t make the trip. “Our Post is there as a gathering place for war veterans. A place for them to get together and make themselves aware of the benefits and services that our government and organizations provide for them. It’s also a place for them to socialize and bring their friends and family together,” Rob Prokopowicz, VFW Post 260’s Auxiliary treasurer said. Prokopowicz expanded on some of their efforts, explaining the Post’s close connection with the veterans of St. Albans Veterans Hospital. “We sometimes go there and host things like bingos, barbecues and little parties for them or we bring the disabled veterans from the hospital to the Post for a day of relaxation, to

take them away from the mundane, institutionalized life in the hospital and give them a sense of being home and among community and friends. We work with other local organizations like the North Channel Yacht Club, the Iroquois Yacht Club, the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department and others to offer them more events. For instance, this summer we brought them to the North Channel Yacht Club for a day of fishing on the water. What a great day that was. Another big event that we have coming up is the Sunday before Thanksgiving, in which we bring about 40 to 50 veterans from the hospital to our Post, and about 30 to 40 members and people from the community show up to volunteer and give them a wonderful dinner. It’s a tremendous effort.” Each year, the VFW Post 260 also hosts Broad Channel’s Memorial Day parade to thank all veterans and honor them. “On the Sunday before Memorial Day, we spearhead the parade along with the American Legion and we invite all local organizations to come out to honor them. It’s a wonderful parade that ends

with a nice barbecue lunch at the Post. It gives the entire community a chance to come out and show their respect to our veterans,” Prokopowicz said. The community is also welcome to VFW Post 260. “We open our doors on weekends to our members, but we do accept their guests. We’re more inclusive than exclusive,” he said. However, the hall is always available for community use, especially when it comes to events to support others. From hosting the NYFAC Foundation’s holiday toy run for autistic children and their families, to opening their doors for local school graduations and dances, to hosting community fundraiser barbecues and charity concerts for Friends in Need, those from the community going through a tough time, VFW Post 260 is always there. On Saturday, the community is welcome to celebrate all that VFW Post 260 does as they mark their 100th anniversary. The day will be a fun-filled celebration for all. It kicks off with a prayer service, starting at 9 a.m., followed by a light breakfast. From noon until 3 p.m., there will be plen-

ty to do for the kids, from games to goodies like cotton candy and more. From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., all are welcome to enjoy a buffet dinner for just $10 per person. Then you’re going to want to stick around for a night of music by some of the best local voices out there as part of a concert from 8 p.m. to midnight. Admission for the concert is $10 per person for those just coming to the show. The night will also include 50/50s and raffles to help raise money for VFW Post 260, so they can keep doing the great work they do for our war veterans. Organizing the music for the evening is Walker Hornung, a regular at VFW Post 260 music events, who wanted to pay it forward. “Anytime we hold an event for a Friend in Need, the VFW opens their doors to us. They do a lot of good stuff for the neighborhood and it’s always good to give back,” he said. So in return, Hornung will be performing, along with a slew of local talent, including Bobby Butler, John Simonelli, Kyle Wade, Mason Porretto, Joe Caravella, Heidi and Eddy Joe, Desmond Ivor, Chris Vought and more. Each musician will perform about four songs, including original music and covers for all to enjoy, plus DJ music in between sets. “There are so many great songwriters in the area. It’s going to be incredible,” Hornung said. Prokopowicz hopes that Saturday’s celebration will be a fun opportunity for some of the VFW’s older members to take a trip down memory lane and leave with new memories to cherish. “I’m hoping that it will bring back fond memories of all of the events that we’ve had in the past. There’s a deep history with this place and I hope some historians can come out and bring back some photos and reminisce about the laughs they’ve had here with this community,” he said. “It will be a fun reunion and a great day for our veterans and for the neighborhood. It was a terrible and terrifying event that occurred as the community was dealing with the aftermath of 9/11. Honoring Our Veterans This Monday

On Monday, November 11, we honor those military members who served our country. There are a few events taking place to honor our veterans locally in honor of the day. There are no local parades, but you can head to Manhattan for the city parade, which kicks off at noon from 26th to 46th Street along 5th Avenue. There is an opening ceremony at 11 a.m. at Madison Square Park and a wreath-laying at the Eternal Light Flagstaff

Monument just before noon. Locally, the American Legion Daniel M. O’Connell Post #272 will hold a small ceremony at the Doughboy and GI Jane statues on Beach 95th and Rockaway Beach Boulevard, which includes a prayer service and a wreath-laying at the monuments. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. Also on Saturday, November 9, the VFW Post 260 in Broad Channel is hosting an all-day celebration for the 100th anniversary of the Post serving our nation’s veterans. There will be events taking place all day, from a prayer service at 9 a.m., to fun for the kids starting at noon, to a buffet dinner at 4 p.m., followed by a concert of local musicians starting at 8 p.m. at 713 Shad Creek Road. Concessions Could Be Under New Management the coming years, mainly, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ plan to install coastal protection measures along the beach and boardwalk. These measures, expected to begin in 2020, include a taller, fortified sand dune, which will require the construction of new ramps and stairs to access the beach, widening of the beach and the construction of new groins. The project could take three to four years, so concessionaires are warned of potential impacts this could have on beach crowds and business. The RFP provides financial information about the current concessionaire for others to consider as the proposer must provide a guaranteed annual flat fee that they will pay to the Parks Department for use of their facilities, with at least a 5% increase each year of operation. For the current operator, in 2016, their gross receipt totaled $3,285,881.40 and their fee to Parks was $91,012. In 2017, their gross receipt was $3,738,502.64 and their fee was $98,293. In

There could be a new guy operator for the popular boardwalk concessions come summer 2021. On November 1, the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation put out a Request for Proposals for a company to manage the Beach 86th, Beach 97th and Beach 106th concessions under a 15-year term. The RFP is open to all interested parties, but those behind the Rockaway Beach Club, the group that has run the concessions for the past nine summers, is hoping to be the one to keep the party going. The Rockaway Beach Club has been running the three major boardwalk concessions since they took over in 2011. They transformed each concession into colorful beachside oases, complete with a variety of diverse food choices, bars serving up delicious beer and wine options, retail space and music every weekend, drawing record crowds to the Rockaway Beach area each summer. From Rip-

pers to Low Tide to Caracas, the concessions keep people coming back for more. However, summer 2020 could be their last. With Parks’ new RFP, the concessions are now fair game. Anyone can throw their hat into the ring and have the opportunity to become the next concession operator to begin in summer 2021. The RFP calls for the someone to take over the renovation, operation, and maintenance of the three outdoor concessions, one beach shop, and the operation of up to 20 satellite units along the beach and boardwalk. The RFP gives a heads up to operators about factors that could impact business within

In addition to providing food, beverages and fun, the operator would have many responsibilities when it comes to the buildings. “Parks anticipates a substantial investment from the concessionaire,” the RFP says regarding capital improvements. Bill Hanson Dear Editor: On October 18, Bill Hanson died and took a bit of Rockaway with him. We lost one of our best and I lost one of my best friends. Bill was a great mentor, a dedicated family man and a fantastic cook. He was taken from us way too soon. Bill and his wife, Nancy, started Roxbury Mills and employed many locals at their Beach 101st Street knitting mill for years. While running a business and raising a family, he also found

the time to serve on the boards of both the RDRC and CB 14. An accomplished kayaker and Olympic team coach, Bill was instrumental in launching the Gateway Bike & Boathouse in 2008 to introduce new people to the sport via free public kayaking. The Hansons even volunteered their home for the fundraiser that kick-started Rockaway’s newest not-forprofit organization. Since then, Bill had served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for this 501(c)3. He had been instrumental in getting thousands of people on Jamaica Bay, many for the first time, from our original Riis Landing location and more recently, from Community Boathouse in Rockaway Beach. The concessionaire will be expected to cover everything from Commercial General Liability insurance, to Worker’s Compensation, Employer’s Liability and Disability Benefits Insurance and even Flood Insurance for the buildings. When it comes to the satellite units or mobile vendors, the concessionaire will be able to have up to 20 mobile food units, temporary popup kiosks, and beach hawkers, between Beach 49th and Beach 149th, on the boardwalk, or on the beach for beach hawkers, which will be limited to selling food and non-alcoholic beverages. However, the satellite locations will need to be approved. Some pre-approved locations include Beach 59th, 68th and 73rd, near playground areas. The 49-page RFP outlines plenty of other requirements for potential concessionaires,

which can make the proposal process daunting for anyone who hasn’t been through it before. However, Maribel Araujo, the head of Rockaway Beach Club, and her team of concessionaires are ready to take on the challenge of reapplying to keep the concessions going. “We have already been working on it. We’ve been getting ourselves together as a group and trying to bring together our ideas and drafting a proposal,” Araujo said. “We’re definitely committed to staying. By now, most of us live in Rockaway and we’d love to keep up the work and keep improving and offering more of a variety of food and developing more mobile vending so people can have different foods in different areas of the boardwalk.” In anticipation of the RFP being released, the Rockaway Beach Club got a head start during the summer by putting out petitions for visitors to sign to keep them as the concessions operator, to show how much support they have. According to Araujo, that support was over-

whelming. “We basically started passing the petition around to show proof that the community wants us working for them. A majority of people have shown their support and shown that they’re happy with the work that we’ve done, so we started collecting signatures to add to our proposal to show that we already have the community support behind us,” Araujo said, adding that local civic associations also plan on providing letters of support. However, Araujo acknowledges that anything can happen. “It’s fair game. People might think that big corporations can’t apply. But they can. It’s open to anyone and anything. That could mean something like Starbucks can come in,” she said. “But we’re not thinking about who can come and who we might be up against. It’s more about putting together a really strong proposal. With the experience we have and already being there for 10 years, we’re hoping for the best.” As the operator will likely be chosen before summer 2020,

Araujo is hoping next summer will be a reason to celebrate instead a season of mourning. “We’re just hoping that for summer 2020, we’re going to be super excited to be there, knowing that we’re going to go from one term to the other. We’re hoping it’s not going to be a sad summer for us,” she said. All proposals must be received by 2 p.m. on Friday, December 13. All interested proposers have an opportunity to tour the concessions properties on Wednesday, November 20 at noon, starting at the Beach 86th concession. Interviews with proposers will be conducted the week of January 6, 2020. All of the proposals will be reviewed by a selections committee of at least three Parks or other City employees. On Monday, November 12, 2001, many in Rockaway were home as it was the day Veterans Day was being observed. It began as a normal, beautiful day in Rockaway, however shortly after 9 a.m., that would change for many. At 9:16 a.m., an Airbus A300 came crashing down in Belle Harbor and the day became one that would forever be remembered in Rockaway history. As American Airlines Flight 587 crashed, its engines were flung, one landing on Beach 128th and another, nearly missing the gas tanks of Bullochâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gas station on Beach 129th Street. The body of the Dominican Republic-bound plane, directly hit at Beach 131st and Newport Avenue. As firefighters took on the blazing homes and burning remnants of the plane, the smell of fuel filled the air among the confusion, and many in Rockaway feared the worst as the ripples of the massive terror attack that

took place just two months before, still resonated through the neighborhood recovering from that loss. This was another terror attack, many thought immediately. Investigations would find that the crash wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t an act of terror, yet an act of pilot error. However, the impact of the crash of Flight 587 still brought waves of pain once again, as great loss was felt. The impact killed all 260 people (251 passengers and nine crewmembers) on board American Airlines Flight 587. On the ground, five Rockaway neighbors perished; Thomas and Helen Concannon, Kathie Lawler, and her son, Christopher, and Franco Pomponio. On Tuesday, November 12, they will all be remembered. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Flight 587 Memorial Ceremony will be held at the Beach 116th Street Memorial, beginning at 9 a.m. Mayor Bill de Blasio is expected to attend. The ceremony is open to all.

Type I Diabetes Type I diabetes is caused by the autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing beta cells in the islets of Langerhans, which are located in the pancreas. This leads to a need to inject insulin in order to survive. Approximately one million to 1.5 million Americans have type I diabetes, making it the second-most-common disease of childhood behind asthma. Despite improvements in care, for example, implanted insulin pumps, most people with it do not achieve the desired glycemic (blood sugar) targets, which leads to an increased risk of complications and early death. In two Scottish studies,

type I diabetes led to a loss of 14.2 life-years in men, and 17.7 life-years in women when it was diagnosed before the age of 10. If diagnosed before the age of 20, the life-years lost were 11 and 13, respectively. Type I diabetes progresses through several stages before becoming overt disease. In stage 1, autoantibodies are detected in the blood. In stage 2, dysglycemia appears. This means mildly elevated blood sugar levels during a glucose tolerance test. In stage 2, while metabolic responses to elevated glucose levels are impaired, metabolic indexes for diabetes, for example hemoglobin A1c, are normal

and treatment is not necessary. In stage 3, overt disease is present requiring treatment. There have been several studies that used an antibody-containing medication to disable or kill certain white blood cells (CD8+ T lymphocytes) that were found to be the cells that attack and destroy the pancreatic insulin-producing cells. These studies tested a drug named teplizumab and found that it reduced the loss of pancreatic beta cells and delayed the onset of diabetes for up to seven years. Recently, another study using teplizumab was published. It looked at non-diabetic relatives of patients with type I diabetes who were at least eight years of age. They had two or more diabetes-related antibodies detected in their blood and had evidence of dysglycemia on a glucose tolerance test. In other words, they were at high risk to develop type I diabetes. Although this study was a small one, at the conclusion of it they found that the median delay of onset of overt disease was two years. In addi-

The Rockaway Times tion, in the teplizumab group, 57 percent remained diabetes-free while only 28 percent remained disease free in the control group. The findings of this study and others support the notion that type I diabetes is a chronic T-cell-mediated disease and that immunomodulation, or impairing the ability of certain white blood cells (T cells) to attack the pancreas, before the development of clinical disease, can be useful. Unfortunately, the reason why a person’s own immune system attacks the pancreas remains unclear at present. By focusing on a person’s own immune system, medical science continues to not only find ways to delay the onset of type I diabetes, but also to treat, if not one day cure, the disease using stem cells. Meanwhile, if you have a child who has close relatives with type I diabetes, get him or her to the pediatrician to be evaluated for his/her risk of getting the disease. For Rockaway Park resident Alice Ostrowsky, retiring was not an end to her lifelong professional vocation of helping others, but an opportunity to rekindle childhood dreams of being creative, while continuing to pay it forward by bringing joy to others through handcrafting precious tote bags and wallets that are not only utilitarian in their use, but also altruistic in that they are all made with a bottomless pit of plastic bags. And the best part? The proceeds of each purchase go to a charity close to the buyer’s heart. In the following Q&A, the curly-haired, spunky baby boomer, self-dubbed, “the new old design gal,” shares how retirement gave her a new lease on life that gives British rocker Rod Stewart’s song, “Forever Young,” a whole new meaning. RT: You said that you are a born-and-bred Bronx girl. What brought you to Rockaway? AO: Like many things in my life, it really wasn’t planned. I didn’t know much about Rockaway. On a whim I bought my house. Not that I had money to throw around, but I said, “I’m a grown-up, maybe I should invest in something.” Then after a few life changes, my husband and I decided to make Rockaway our new home. RT: What was your vocation before you became the sustainable “New Old Design Gal?”

AO: For many years, I was a vocational rehabilitation counselor in mental health and substance abuse treatment, and for the last 15 years, I was a patient advocate. RT: So, how did you get into making the bags? AO: If someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up, I would have said an artist because I loved drawing. However, in my family, it was you get a civil service job, where you stay until it’s time to retire because how else do you pay your bills? However, my job was stressful, and I wanted to start doing something with my hands. The first bag I made was from pantyhose. My inspiration was Neeta, the mother of a childhood friend who came from a family that my mom would call, “hungry poor.” Neeta crocheted blankets from old nylon stockings. I had a drawer full of pantyhose, so I decided to figure out something that I could create and I made my very first bag. Then I turned to plastic. I was working in a hospital, where we had this employee intranet, so I posted a message: “I know you all have a pile of plastic bags in your closet or under your sink. If you bring them to me, I’ll turn them into something useful, and sell them as a fundraiser for Cycle for Survival, (a nonprofit that hosts indoor cycling events to

CHANGE Some people go with the flow all their lives; when something changes, whatever it may be, they seem to go with it. Others face a grueling inner war every time there is a change. Partly, I think, it has to do with individual nature. Each of us has a certain makeup that is the sum total of what we came into the world with, what formed during the early years and the experiences we had as young adults. Can we change the way we deal with change? And can we be more accepting of change? Particu-

larly when someone close has a change of heart? The awareness that everything is changing at every moment is at the source of understanding and accepting what change is all about. We can paint that picket fence white, but it does not stay white. It begins to get nicks here and there and grays over time. It is happening right before our eyes, but it is a gradual change, so we often don’t notice. There is a natural order of things in the inanimate world and also in the living world of

flowers, trees, insects, fish, animals and humans. If you take a time-lapse video beginning with the planting of a flower seed, you will see the first sprout through the soil to the growth of the stem to the bursting of the bud to the flowering. Then you will see the beginning of brown edges on the petals to the falling off of the leaves to the withering of the flower back to the earth. This is the natural order of things. From the moment the seed sprouts, a chain is triggered to grow and reach a flower at its peak beauty—the perfection of nature. We can bring this imagery to our own lives. On a physical level, accepting the natural order of things could be challenging for some because of outside influences. We want to “look” young. It is much better to feel young! To be healthy from the inside out. “We are what we eat” is no joke. Trying to eat healthy foods for the most part—food with no additives—then once in a while,

Page 29 eat whatever is tempting. For the mind, also feeding it what is good and whole. Keeping an active mind and taking in no violence or hate or anything like that. Then embracing that our bodies change, our appearances change in the natural order of things. Unexpected things happen. A job layoff. An accident. Someone all of a sudden wanting to move on. Whatever it is. How we internalize and deal with what happens, makes a big difference in the health of our inner landscape, that is, who we are and hope to be. So the next time something unexpected happens, try to understand it, deal with it with an open heart and imagine what good can come out of it. Situations change. People change. Life is changing all of the time. Embrace it as the natural order of things and you will be calmer and happier. May you be happy. May you be free. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you be grateful. May you have inner peace.

Thanksgiving Comings & Goings

Are you getting ready for the big day? Buying your turkey, sending invites, hoping certain relatives can’t make it?! Well, if you want a different take on it all, try the NYC National Museum of the American Indian at Bowling Green. You know the place; it was in the Ghostbusters movie. If you are running out of things to do when you take the ferry in to the city and have simply forgotten about this elephant in the room, you should really check it out. I remember when it first opened, the exhibits left a little to be desired. But on a recent trip through the museum, I was totally impressed with the breadth and scope of the archives on display. First off, the history of the building and the site go back to our original Dutch ancestors. Be-

cause that site was the very site of the original Dutch fort. Didn’t stop the British from sailing in and telling Governor Stuyvesant that they would take over from there. They were nice to the Governor though and let him and his peg leg hobble about his orchards further uptown. Across the way in Bowling Green Park, the patriots decided to take down the statue of King George and melt it down to make ammunition to fight those very same British. A little further up the street behind Trinity Church, a young man studying to become a lawyer, who fought in the revolution and eventually became the first Secretary of the Treasury, had the building that houses the museum named after him: Alexander Hamilton. The former Customs House is a massive columned building where the customs duties were collected and accounted for, and until the introduction of the Income Tax in 1916, was the largest revenue contributor to the U.S. treasury. But back to its current purpose:

preserving the history, culture and heritage of the Native American Indian. And not just the United States, but Indian culture from the Arctic Circle to Tierra del Fuego. Much of the exhibits are courtesy of the George Gustav Heye Center. And the exhibits are fascinating and well curated. In addition, the inside of the Museum/Custom House is stupendous. The ceilings, the paintings, the architecture, it is so worth visiting. And here’s the thing: it’s free!! And not to be outdone,

I haven’t wandered through this place but intend to, and pledge to report back. In the meantime, don’t forget the American Indian on Thanksgiving. Financial institutions deciding whether to issue you a loan, credit card or mortgage will check your credit file to make sure you can manage debt. A landlord considering whether to rent an apartment to you will screen your credit report to make sure they’re renting to a tenant who will pay rent on time. Some states allow employers to conduct a credit check as part of the hiring process. The results of these checks can significantly impact important aspects of our lives. The federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) regulates the credit reporting agencies (CRAs), which maintain our credit files, including specialty agencies that sell particular information (rental and check writing histories, medical records), to ensure that consumers are treated fairly and their information is

accurate and kept private. Furnishers of information to CRAs are also regulated by FCRA. You have important rights under FCRA including: • A right to disclosure, for free, depending on the circumstance, of the information a CRA has in your file. You will need to provide identification. • A right to request your credit score. You will generally be required to pay for it. • A right to dispute inaccurate or incomplete information in your file. • A right to accurate reporting. If you find incomplete or inaccurate information in your file, or unverifiable information, the CRA must delete or correct it. A CRA may continue to report information it has verified. • A right to “limited access” by others to your file. CRAs can only provide your information to specified entities with a “valid need,” for example, a bank checking your loan ap-

plication. You also have the right to know who’s requested your credit in the past year. A right to have your report provided to an employer ONLY if you have consented, generally in writing. A right to know if your credit report has been used against you to deny employment, credit, or insurance or otherwise take “adverse action.” The entity using the credit report must provide the contact information of the CRA that provided the disclosure leading to the adverse action. A right to a credit report that does not contain outdated negative information. A CRA may not report bankruptcies older than 10 years or negative information older than seven years. A right to opt out of receiving unsolicited pre-screened credit offers based on information in your credit report. A right to place a “security freeze” or “fraud alert” in your credit report file at the

three major CRAs (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion). The freeze denies access to your file, thereby preventing new credit from being opened in your name unless you temporarily “thaw” the freeze by using a special PIN. Thawing may cause a delay when you are applying for credit (for example, a mortgage). Alternatively, when you place a fraud alert in your file, a prospective creditor needs to verify your identity before issuing credit. The alert is generally good for a year but can be extended. Identity theft victims and military personnel have additional rights. Furthermore, FCRA allows for a private right of action in federal or state court and recovery of damages for violations of the law. More stringent state laws may provide additional rights to those you have under FCRA. Local Nonprofits to Receive Funding for Far Rock Commercial District

Some of Far Rockawayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s commercial districts are set to get a pick me up due to funding for local nonprofits from NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS). On Thursday, October 31, SBS Commissioner Gregg Bishop announced $1.5 million in investments will be awarded to local nonprofits to revitalize the Downtown Far Rockaway commercial district over the course of three years. The Rockaway Development Revitalization Corporation (RDRC) and the Rockaway East Merchants Association (REMA4US) will be receiving these Neighborhood 360Â° grants between 2019 and 2022. Neighborhood 360Â° grants are used to help build the capacity of local organizations, revitalize key commercial corridors and address locally identified needs. The needs of Downtown Far Rockaway were identified last year through a series of surveys, observations and stakeholder interviews. RDRC promotes the econom-

ic and community revitalization of the Rockaways by improving the quality of life for its residents. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be using the grant money to improve their service offerings, clean and beautify the Downtown Far Rockaway neighborhood and create programming to facilitate social interaction among its residents and shoppers. REMA4US aims to engage in economic development and revitalization in the Rockaways by informing the public about opportunities for growth and creating a safe environment for

economic expansion. After crushing the Queens RFC 57-0, the Rockaway Fisheads play the Rochester Aardvarks at Fort Tilden this Saturday, November 9 for the League Championship. There will be a BBQ at the field following the game. The Club hopes the community turns out to support this championship run.

Directions: Preheat oven to 375. In a medium size bowl, mix ground meat with the egg whites. Break sheets of matzo into bowl (I crumbled most but left some larger pieces). Add 2/3 jar of salsa. Mix thoroughly. Put in an oiled or buttered loaf pan. Add mixture. Pour rest of jar sauce over the loaf.

Cook for 50-55 minutes. I made this with a side of herbed mashed cauliflower.

Rockaway Spirit Runs Strong in NYC Marathon By Katie McFadden

There were 53,627 runners in this year’s New York City Marathon, making it the largest race in the world, with participants from all 50 states and 141 countries, but among them were a few superstars that stood out who call Rockaway home. One runner, 25-year-old Conor Gallagher of Belle Harbor, placed 204th out of those fifty-three thousand, and even more impressive—it was his first marathon—ever. As Gallagher passed that finished line, his clock stopped at two hours, 39 minutes and 33 seconds. That equates to a six-minute and six-second pace throughout the 26.219-mile trek across the five boroughs. Would be do it again? “The soreness is getting better each day, and I’m thinking that once I forget about the soreness and suffer from memory loss, I will want to do it again next year.
