PROTECTION NEEDED NOW By Katie McFadden

Photos making their way around local social media pages have been causing alarm over the past week, several local photographers have shown that the beachside ramp on Beach 92nd Street, has become a direct path into the ocean when high tide hits. The sea’s encroachment of the ramp has made for unique photos, but a scary reality. The beaches are continuing to disappear. Even worse? Components of the brand new mul-

ti-million dollar boardwalk are starting to fail as a result. A recent photo by Argirios Kostaras, who some may know as Rockaway Beach’s Mister Softee, reinforced the fact that coastal protection is needed—NOW. The photo shows that the Beach 92nd concrete ramp, about twofeet high, is starting to break with each high tide eroding the sand from underneath it. Agencies involved with the boardwalk project are pointing fingers. The Rockaway Times reached out to Skanska, the company that conducted the board-

walk build, and the NYC Economic Development Corp., one of the agencies that oversaw the build. Both refused to comment, but referred us to the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. Parks simply responded, saying, “Parks engineers are investigating the ramp at Beach 92nd Street. The boardwalk remains safe and structurally sound,” and pointed fingers toward the Army Corps of Engineers, saying their plan, which includes jetties, will protect against this happening in the future. When that future date will be

is still up in the air, as the Army Corps is still finalizing its reformulation study report, which won’t be done until the spring of 2018. The community is continuing to bring awareness to these issues. John Cori, of the Rockaway Beach Civic Association, is spearheading a photo opportunity at the Beach 92nd ramp at 10 a.m. on Sunday, December 3. All are welcome to be a part of the photo indicating the erosion in this area, which will be shown to Mayor Bill de Blasio when he comes to town for a Town Hall on December 5.

Your Local Thanksgiving Guide: From Thanksgiving Eve to Good Deeds By Katie McFadden

It’s that time of year to feast and give thanks for all that we have. Around town, there will be many other ways to complete your Thanksgiving holiday, from meeting up with old friends on Thanksgiving Eve, to burning off that meal with a run, to gathering for a community dinner on the big day, or volunteering your time to help feed others. Thanksgiving Eve, Wednesday, November 22, kicks off this holiday of indulging, with libations before digging into that turkey. Several local watering holes are having drink specials, DJs and bands for the special night. Live music will be in full swing on Thanksgiving Eve. If you want to spend your evening on the bay, Bungalow Bar’s kitchen will be open, serving up your favorite comfort foods, while a special Thanksgiving Eve Trivia night will kick off at 7 p.m., with a DJ

to follow. Next door, Thai Rock will have live music by Killer Joe’s Lido Soul Quarter starting at 9 p.m. In Arverne, Rockaway Brewing Company will be rocking with the sounds of Big Squid starting at 8 p.m. For those heading to Breezy Point, some may want to catch Americana band BreezyGrass at the Sugar Bowl starting at 7:30 p.m. Others may choose the BayHouse to catch Solshyne rock out starting at 8 p.m. Kennedy’s may also be a good choice to grab some grub before a full day of cooking. Some local establishments will make people want to break out those dance moves with DJ music and drink specials. Community House has a full lineup of DJs including DJ Cash, DJ Mikey and DJ Shamrock starting at 10 p.m. Note that a dress code will be enforced and a 21 and up New York State ID will be required to get in. At Healy’s Pub, DJ Kuff will start

the party at 8 p.m. Healy’s will also be open for Thanksgiving Day and a buffet will be served in the afternoon for customers. Starting at 10 p.m., Brendan’s Bar will feature DJ Gary, while Kieran and Shawn host the party. There will be specials for $4 Fireball shots. Don’t forget that your summer bar, Connolly’s opens for the night, starting at 7 p.m. and DJ Matt Finley will be spinning the tunes while you sip your frozen. Some other choices for the night are Rogers, The Wharf, Jamesons, Epstein’s and Kerry Hills. Want to prepare for the upcoming feast? Go for a run on Thanksgiving morning. The Breezy Point Turkey Trot 5K kicks off from the Sugar Bowl at 9:30 a.m. and the one-miler starts at 9:40 a.m. Show up a bit early to register for $5. Runners are also encouraged to bring a canned good as a donation for the local soup kitchen.

Need a meal on Thanksgiving? The community is here for you, and volunteers are welcome to help. We Care New York is hosting its annual Thanksgiving lunch at St. Camillus Springman Hall (180 Beach 100th Street) this year. The event goes from noon until 2 p.m. Anyone can come for a meal, or show up to volunteer. St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church (1920 New Haven Ave) is also hosting a meal around noon with the help of The Graybeards. The Day Of The Bird Happy Thanksgiving. If you play word association, whaddya come up with? Stuffing? Cranberry, sweet potatoes? Turkey, bird, football? Once you rattle off the basics you might come up with King Kong, which used to be shown on TV every Thanksgiving — and probably still is but with 500 channels it’s hard to find the one showing King Kong, Son of Kong, and Mighty Joe Young — back to back. I have no idea why gorilla movies became a tradition. March of the Wooden Soldiers, the Laurel

and Hardy classic, was a tradition, too. If you called it Babes In Toyland, you were lame. I think The Twilight Zone and Outer Limits were TV traditions for a while. Or were they on Christmas? The night before Thanksgiving, the Wizard of Oz was the thing to see — if you weren’t old enough to go out drinking. That’s still the biggest night of the year for some bars, but I digress…. (Well, before I finish digressing, I might as well mention how my older brother would come

home from the bars on Thanksgiving night and pull his chair up and eat leftovers straight out of the fridge). The Wizard of Oz, hard to believe, was only shown on TV that one time during the year. And it was a big deal when the black and white film suddenly turned color when Dorothy lands in Oz. Of course, we had a black and white TV so we imagined color and said it did look a little different. I’ve moved up and now have a color TV. Once you have kids, you wind up watching the movie hundreds of times. And thank God, the movie is great and more than holds up over time. No one alive can hear or say, lions, tigers and bears without adding “Oh my.” So on this holiday, you remember food, football, TV and movies. But you also might remember company. Sometimes a person would be invited because they couldn’t get home or didn’t have family in the area. That would be fine and the whole idea to invite such a person was nice but it’d inject a

Page 5 little weird vibe into the whole day. A stranger of sorts would mute everyone’s personality a bit. (See older brother above). Their presence would generally mean everyone would be on their best behavior. Of course, other company was extended family. The old uncle who smells like scotch, talcum powder and Vitalis. The old aunt was not any better. We swore one aunt smelled like moth balls but were told that it was Calgon bath oil beads. Well, I still don’t know what oil beads are but they smell like yak. People often say they’re turning into their parents — mostly because they have to say stuff to their kids that was said to them. But that’s better than turning into the aunt or uncle that kids will be talking about decades later. But crazy thing is, I’m thankful for the aunts and uncles — because they give you stories and memories you’d never wish away. Yep, they make it on the list of things to be thankful for. I’m happy to say I’ve got a long list. And you’re on it, too. Happy Thanksgiving!

Another Pipeline Proposed For Rockaway’s Waters By Katie McFadden

Another natural gas pipeline project could be on the way. Williams, the company that brought the Rockaway Lateral Project under Riis Park in 2015, is looking to make new additions to its extensive Transco pipeline project that would be placed under area waters. The last natural gas project proposed for local waters, Port Ambrose, was met with heavy backlash. In November 2015, NY Governor Andrew Cuomo vetoed the project, shutting it down before it could begin. Now environmental groups are fighting a new proposal that would be placed under waters off the coast of Rockaway, Williams’ Northeast Supply Enhancement project (NESE). According to Williams, the “Northeast Supply Enhancement project will increase Transco pipeline deliveries to National Grid by 400 million cubic feet per day (enough natural gas to serve the

daily needs of about 2.3 million homes) for the 2019/2020 winter heating season.” The project would include adding 37 miles of pipeline and a new compression station to its existing Transco pipeline system, which covers 10,000 miles across several states. Part of the project would include 10 miles of 42-inch pipe in Lancaster County, Pa., a compressor station in Somerset County, NJ and 3.5 miles of 26-inch pipe in Middlesex County, NJ. However, the bulk of it would be placed in waters near Rockaway. About 23 miles of 26-inch pipe would be installed under the ocean floor from New Jersey to the Rockaway Lateral Project, which runs off the waters of Rockaway and under Riis Park. The project is in the early filing stages. In April of this year, Williams officially filed the formal application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). House Passes Problematic Flood Insurance Bill By Katie McFadden

On Tuesday, November 16, a bill that would extend the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), passed the House of Representatives. However local democratic representatives say the bill, H.R. 2874, or the 21st Century Flood Reform Act, could lead to much higher flood insurance premiums for areas already hit hard by Hurricane Sandy, if it clears the Senate. The NFIP has been around since 1968. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which administers the authorization for the program, the NFIP “aims to reduce the impact of flooding on private and public structures. It does so by providing affordable insurance to property owners and by encouraging communities to adopt and enforce floodplain management regulations,” according to FEMA’s website. The program

was set to expire on September 30 of this year, but an extension moved that date to December 8, 2017. With less than a month until that expiration, the House voted 237-189 in favor of the 21st Century Flood Reform Act, which is a package of seven bills that would extend the NFIP for five years, plus other reforms. Yet local Congressman Gregory Meeks opposed the package as is, saying, “it would make flood insurance less affordable for New Yorkers, especially residents in Queens and Nassau County.” In a statement, Meeks explained, “If the House plan were to become law, 83 percent of one-to-four person families in New York would see their premiums increase by at least 6.5 percent in one year. The House plan would kick low- and moderate-income homeowners to the curb by removing lower value homes from the Na-

tional Flood Insurance Program. Furthermore, other than raising premiums on already-struggling policyholders, the bill does nothing to cover the National Flood Insurance Program’s $24.6 billion debt, which is unsustainable considering the increased frequency of severe storms. A lot of the House proposal simply sets up the program for failure.” The bill now moves on to the Senate, where Meeks hopes some changes will be made before it is approved. “Although I voted in opposition to 21st Century Flood Reform Act, I will collaborate with Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-New York) to ensure that the Senate passes a more acceptable proposal. From there, I hope we can reach more bipartisan agreements to reauthorize and reform the National Flood Insurance Program in a way that makes

the program more affordable and sustainable,” he said. Senator Schumer seems on board with making adjustments. “The flood insurance system is far from perfect, and we need reforms that both protect Rockaway homeowners from outrageous premiums and storm victims from fraud abuse,” Schumer said in a statement. “While the House has moved forward with an extension of the National Flood Insurance Program, I will continue to fight for a reauthorization package that includes much-needed fixes to the program while also ensuring that there is an affordable option available to our most vulnerable communities.” The Senate only has until the December 8 deadline to extend the NFIP, but that does not mean the 21st Century Flood Reform Act, which includes extending the program for five years, will be passed as it currently stands.

DBP Residents Left in Limbo as HPD Throws Out Board Vote By Kami-Leigh Agard

Earlier this month, as New Yorkers gave an anemic turnout to the voting booths, resident-shareholders of Dayton Beach Park (DBP) co-op, a New York City supervised Mitchell-Lama Development located in Rockaway Beach, anxiously awaited the results of a battle of their own — the Board of Directors election. However in a surprise twist, all votes were thrown out due to suspicions of voter fraud. On November 1, NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) issued a memo to all resident-shareholders of the five buildings that make up DBP, located at 8600 Shore Front Parkway, stating: “HPD has received many concerns about the accuracy of the list of eligible shareholders that Honest Ballot Association (HBA) has

been relying on to determine the outcome of the 2017 Board of Directors. After a careful review of these concerns, HPD is voiding the voting that has occurred to date and is suspending the current voting. Proxies that have been submitted are also voided.” For some residents, this surprising twist was indeed “Hot News” as just two weeks prior

on October 19, residents of the 50-year-old 1156-unit affordable housing complex that comprises buildings: 8100, 8200, 8400, 8600, 8800 on Shore Front Parkway, were invited to the annual stockholders’ meeting, where they were told that HBA conducted a thorough vetting process to make sure that the shareholder voting list was indeed legit.

The meeting, held at Roma View in nearby Howard Beach, boasted quite a feast, where scores of residents were given the opportunity to vote, while being served with sumptuous Italian hor d’oeuvres and desserts. However, rabble-rousing in the room ignited as some folks questioned the lack of privacy on the ballot, which indicated to list the shareholder’s apartment and building number. A longtime DBP resident, who chose to remain anonymous, said, “This is illegal. This vote is supposed to be done by secret ballot. People will think that they have to list their apartment and building number. HBA is not doing their job, and as a result residents will be duped into accepting an election result that was illegally fashioned.” Continued on page 18

Once the meeting kicked off with DBP Board President Jennifer Grady and representatives from Norris McLaughlin and Marcus, P.A., the law firm representing DBP on all corporate and landlord-tenant litigation, boasting improvements and added amenities to the co-ops including exercise rooms, modernized elevators, pool, additional parking and improved security, the temperature in the room began to boil. Shareholders at the meeting became irate when they weren’t allowed to pose any questions regarding the financial statements presented and the thorniest issue of all, the Article XI (NYC Housing Development Fund Corporation (HDFC) conversion process. According to a statement by HPD Assistant Commissioner Julie Walpert, conversion to an HDFC would allow future shareholders an opportunity to realize a return on their investment as a HPD Mitchell-Lama

co-op shareholder. Apartments would be able to be sold for a profit on the open market, although there will be a limit on sales prices and purchasers will have to meet specified income limit and family composition requirements. Walpert asserts that a Mitchell-Lama’s conversion to an HFDC would preserve affordability in the cooperative for an additional thirty years. Some DBP resident-shareholders strongly disagree. Another resident, who did not want their name mentioned out of fear of retaliation, said, “The Board authorized $100K for this conversion study without giving residents a fair chance to comment. This conversion sounds too good to be true. They are just blowing smoke up our butts by making us think that if we go private, our homes will now be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. With the conversion, our maintenance fees will go up incrementally every year. If someone wanted to sell at the market rate price, the Board will have the right to

deny your buyer without giving you a sound reason, and if a member of your family is not on the affidavit, they won’t have succession rights to inherit the apartment, meaning the apartment would now be the property of the management company. Also you will not be able to get equity on the apartment. Shareholding residents need to really compare and evaluate their rights as Mitchell-Lama shareholders with HPD to privatization with HDFC.” However Board-appointed DBP member, Joseph Canizio, disagrees. “I have lived here since 1976, and I love living here. What the current Board has been able to accomplish since Hurricane Sandy is nothing short of amazing. The grounds are in excellent condition, every building’s lobby has flat screen TVs, new elevators, laundry rooms and much more. I understand why people would be weary about the conversion process. For families who have lived here for decades, there’s a lot at stake, especially our rights to maintain

I think it’s great the HPD has stepped in to audit the shareholders’ voting list. A lot of people live here, who for example, may have had a parent who passed away, and think they are shareholders because they have lived here for years. However, that’s not the case. If you are not on the affidavit, you are not a shareholder and the share of the co-op should be given back to the co-operative.” When The Rockaway Times (RT) contacted HPD about when the election will be finally held, HPD spokesperson, said, “Our concern is that there is not an accurate list of shareholders. We are currently conducting an audit to compile an accurate list. We do not yet have a timeframe for when the election will resume, but we are working diligently and will ensure that when the voting is reopened that the shareholders are all properly noticed.” The RT will provide any updates in future editions.

He answered, ‘I own it.’ In shock, I responded, ‘No, you don’t, you’re lyin’! ’ Then he opened the door and that was it. At the time, he said that he had a lot of people lined up who were interested, but he saved it for me. So, getting this particular place was a gift from above that was meant to be.” Grant said. This is Grant’s first time owning a restaurant, but in that patient, but determined mentality of Caribbean people, she’s taking it one step at a time. “I wanted to open a West Indian restaurant here in Rockaway. A lot of Caribbean people live on the peninsula, and I just wanted to open a space, where everyone —Caribbean and others alike — could enjoy our signature home-cooked delicious food. Williams says the pipeline would be beneficial, claiming that there is a growing demand for natural gas in the area; that the $1 billion privately-funded project would have an economic benefit by creating more than 3,000 jobs during the one-year construction process and that it would lower utility costs, plus the company claims that it would be done in a way that will have no negative effect on Rockaway or its beaches and that the company has a safe reputation, citing the Rockaway Lateral Project, which was installed and has been in operation since 2015 without incident. Yet on Thursday, November 16, dozens came out to a meeting at the Knights of Columbus, including environmental group and community leaders, to speak against the project. The meeting focused on reasons for why the project would be negative, including the impacts it could have on marine life, local ecology and the overall environment; an unsafe track record for

Speaking anonymously, they said there is a middle ground between what supporters and protesters are arguing. “This project wouldn’t be all doom and gloom, yet it’s not nothing to worry about,” they said. They would not support the project outright, but said that it would not impact Rockaway directly as much as the Rockaway Lateral Project does, and that there could be some benefits as a result, such as Williams supporting the creation of artificial reefs in the waters, which would boost local ecology.

As hundreds of folks across the peninsula and Broad Channel are hungrily anticipating Thanksgiving with visions of sumptuously prepared moist turkey, stuffing, sweet potato pie, cranberry sauce (need I continue?) dancing in their heads, some local folks have banded together to provide the same to local families in need. Starting this past Monday, November 20, Edwin Williams and Jeffrey William-Maisonett of Arverne civic association, The Heart of Rockaway (THOR), and Florence Fergurson, board president of Friends of 59th Street Playground Association, joined forces to give away colossal fresh food baskets to families who do not have the means to prepare a Thanksgiving spread for their loved ones. For Williams, the famous Mother Teresa saying — “If

you can’t feed a hundred people, then just feed one” — holds true. “This is the second year, THOR is doing this Thanksgiving giveaway. Last year, we were able to present a few baskets to families, gifting them all the ingredients needed to create their own spread, from the turkey, right down to all the condiments and sides needed for them to craft their own Thanksgiving meal. This year, with donations from owners of Rockaway Commons (Dayton Plaza), Arverne By the Sea (ABTS) developers, the Benjamin Companies and the Beechwood Organization, and Keyfood Supermarket, we were able to create even more baskets to give out. Also, as soon as I contacted Florence from the Friends of 59th Street Playground Association, she hopped right on board to help us not only gather food for the baskets, but to pinpoint families, who may have felt timid about accepting donations,

much less letting it be known that they needed help.” Williams said that they are not just focusing on families in Arverne, but through wordof-mouth, have been able to reach other families throughout all ends of the peninsula, including Far Rockaway and Rockaway Beach. “Local community advocates such as Lew Simon and Lisa George from Senator Sanders’ office have been instrumental in identifying families who we could bless with our baskets.

We have been sensitive to cultural food traditions of some families, like for example, Latino families who would appreciate ingredients necessary to create meals that fit in with their culture. Also, we have been able to connect with military families, who may have a loved one deployed overseas. As a community, if we put all our biases and communal strife aside, and instead focus on how we can help each other, this world will be a better place,” Williams said. Thanksgiving may be one day away, but it’s not too late to help. As of press time, Williams and his team are hard at work giving out baskets just in time for the big bird to thaw out and be prepared for baking. Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a dominantly inherited genetic disorder that affects about one in 250 individuals. Persons with this disorder have markedly elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C or “bad” cholesterol) and accelerated rates of heart disease. Families with this disorder often have adults who have died of heart disease in their 40’s or 50’s. Persons with FH have a 2.5- to 10-fold increased risk of heart disease as compared to controls, but when FH is diagnosed and treated early in life, the risk is greatly reduced, often by as much as 80 percent. Unfortunately

however, most people with FH have never been diagnosed or treated. Recently a new method of finding and treating those with FH has been developed. This new method is called family-based cascade screening. Because FH is dominantly inherited, cascade screening of family members can be highly effective. Cascade screening relies on identifying an FH patient and then screening all potentially affected relatives using active cholesterol testing, genetic screening, or both. Then this cycle is repeated, or cascaded, for each relative diagnosed with FH, thereby expanding the number of po-

tential cases identified. About 60 to 80 percent of those diagnosed with FH are found to have one or more genetic mutations. Other potential sources for identifying cases of FH include electronic medical records and billing code data. Once an index patient with FH is found, cascade screening starts with first-degree relatives (parents, siblings, and children). If the affected parent is found, as many relatives on that parent’s side should be screened including children of the affected parent’s siblings. The children should be screened because treatment often begins in childhood. Cascade screening can reduce the average age at which FH is diagnosed and increase the number of individuals on lipid-lowering therapies, thereby reducing LDL-C and the rate of heart disease. For example, in the Netherlands cascade screening identified, on average, eight relatives with FH for each index case. The main problem with cascade screening in the U.S. is

The Rockaway Times identifying the index patient. Current estimates in the U.S. are that less than 10 percent of FH cases have been identified. Also lipid testing in children is not as common as adults, although a recent study showed the efficacy of screening children for FH during routine immunization visits (in the study for every 1000 children screened, eight with FH were identified). Another barrier to cascade screening in the U.S. is privacy laws. When an index case is identified, that person must reach out to all known relatives as privacy laws forbid the medical community to contact them. From a patient perspective, it is important that the diagnosis of FH does not result in discrimination. In the U.S., the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act protects against health insurance and employment discrimination but unfortunately there is no current protection against life insurance or disability insurance bias. Bugalou Music Series Rocks On This Thanksgiving marks the 41st anniversary of The Band's farewell concert, The Last Waltz. Filmed by Martin Scorcese, it has been acclaimed as possibly the greatest rock concert movie ever, as The Band says goodbye, joined by musical friends including Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Van Morrison, and Joni Mitchell among others. The Band's musical influence continues to this day, particularly as the foundation of the genre known as Americana. On Saturday, December 2, Bugalou Productions will present The THE BAND Band at St. Camillus Catholic Academy Auditorium in a tribute to the original legends. They have earned a national reputation performing The Band's music at venues including City Winery, BB King's, and Daryl's House, and will now be adding Rockaway to their resume.

Rockaway legends Indaculture will start the evening off with a one hour set of their lively rock and roll. Small Business Saturday, the community-minded little sister of the dreaded Black Friday, is an annual shopping tradition dedicated to supporting small businesses and celebrating communities across the country. Small Business Saturday is celebrated every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, meaning this Saturday, November 25. There are many, many reasons to support small businesses, but one of the most important ones is that small businesses actively support local charities and community organizations. By spending your money at local businesses, you support the entire community. We asked a few of our Rockaway Business Alliance (RBA) member businesses which charities and non-profits they support. Here are some of the responses: Says Jim Otton of Fat Cardinal Bakery: “We are donating pies to We Care New York for their Thanksgiving meal. We’ve also donated items to various other events throughout the neighborhood, like the ferry launch, clean ups (both with the RBA and others) and to other small businesses like NurtureU and Avoid the Day. In January, we’re working with St. Francis de Sales’ youth group. Fat Cardinal co-owner, Thomas Quinn, will do a lesson and then the things they bake will be used at a bake sale to raise funds.” Uncle Louie G donates to the 100th Precinct Council’s National Night Out, as well as to their Christmas party for the local children. They also have helped fundraise for St. Camillus, St. Francis and St.

The Rockaway Times Rose schools, and for the dog park. Lana’s Loft supports many local charities and fundraisers, including Rockaway Little League, Rockaway's Night Out Against Crime, and local school and synagogue fundraisers. Nationally, Lana’s supports Shriners Hospital for Children. Edgemere Farm supports Middle School 53 and Rockaway Rising. Globally, the Farm has also sent funds to the Mennonite Disaster Services after the hurricanes. Cuisine by Claudette supports Redemption Rescues, St. Camillus Church and St. Francis Church. Nationally they support the Make a Wish Foundation. Says Nigel Louis of Station RBNY, “We work really closely with Rockaway Rising, but are open to working with any organization that supports the Rockaway Community.”

And for anyone trekking out to Rockaway from other parts of the city for Small Business Saturday, the ferry is a great way to get there! NYC Ferry will be sharing a list of small businesses near their landings in honor of the shopping holiday. While Black Friday has always felt a bit counter to the ideology of giving and sharing that we celebrate on Thanksgiving, Small Business Saturday is a positive alternative that supports the local economy while also giving back to those in need. Yep, Kelly Slater and his company, the KSWAVECO, have muscled their influence and technology to host a World Surf League (WSL) competition event as part of 2018 Championship Tour (CT) calendar. Early reports were that it was in addition to the 11 scheduled events worldwide, but a new release about the full tour shows it’s technically replacing an event, the Trestles Hurley Pro. "Based on the results of our test event this year and the feedback from surfers training at the facility throughout the season, next September's event has the potential to be something special for both surfers and fans," Sophie Goldschmidt, World Surf League (WSL) CEO, said on WSL.com. Track News CROSS COUNTRY UPDATE The 2017 High School and College Cross Country seasons are nearly complete now after last Saturday's NY Federation, NCAA, and ECAC/IC4A championships. Aidan Donohue continued a late season surge to place 12th at the Federation Championships in 16:29 for the 5k at Bowdoin, pacing Xavier to a 2nd place finish in the team championship. This came on the heels of an amazing 2nd place finish the week before in the CHSAA Intersectional Championships at Van Cortland Park in a blazing 12:50 4k as Xavier defended their CHSAA title. The Nike Regionals (and hopefully, Nationals) are still ahead for Donohue and his teammates. Other boys with strong performances at the CHSAA's were Xavier's Dylan Abernethy in 14:28, Michael Tuffey 15:00, Ryan Fitzgerald 15:03, Terence Moriarty 15:39, Connor Bradwisch 15:39, and Xaverian's

John Conroy in 15:11. Anthony Markle of Xaverian turned in his best time in the BQ championships with a 14:08. Others with strong seasons included Ryan Meade of Regis, Michael Lynch of McClancy, Kennedy Kirk, Jack McDade and Matt McDade of Molloy, Xavier's Jack Bambury and Brendan Watters, and Xaverian's Joseph Featherston and Brendan Glynn. On the freshman circuit, Tuffey showed he will be a force in the next few years with a blistering 8:54 2.5k in the Intersectional Freshman Championships. Chaminade's Timmy Mills in 9:19, and Xaverian's Shane Howard in 9:47 also showed a lot of promise. On the Girls’ side, Jackie Thompson of Notre Dame Academy (NDA) placed 10th in 16:32 at the CHSAA Intersectionals, with NDA taking the team title, and qualifying for the Federation Championships where she ran 20:58 for 5k as NDA placed 7th.

She was joined at the Federation Championships by Molloy's Paige McDade (17:55 at CHSAA) and Mary Louis' Catherine Lunny (18:28 CHSAA) who qualified after great finishes at the Intersectionals. Margaret Tolan of JFK Catholic just missed the cut but turned in a 17:51 in an earlier meet at Van Cortland. Also performing well were Molloy's Kaleigh Gilroy, and Fontbonne's Kate Wrynn. Freshman stars include Caroline Gifford of Fontbonne in 11:00 and Casey Gilroy of Molloy in 11:47 for the 2.5k. On the collegiate side, Tess Gallagher of St. John's finished an outstanding season for the Red Storm by taking the individual title of the Coach’s Division at the ECA/IC4A championships on Saturday in 19:10. Her sister, Jackie Gallagher, placed 21st in 20:43. Their brother, Liam ran 28:21 in the East Coast Conference championship for Molloy College, while oldest sister, Kerri

in her second year as head coach at Manhattan College, guided the Jaspers to 2nd place in the MAAC championships, 19th in the NCAA Northeast Regional, and 5th at the ECAC/IC4A championships. Her Lady Jaspers, led by Lisa Fajardo, placed 4th in MAAC, 30th in NCAA and 11th at ECAC. John Lovett has added to the Rockaway flavor as Kerri's assistant and together they have Manhattan moving up in the ranks. Also moving up on the Division 3 level is St. Joseph's College led by first year head coach Patrick Goldberg and assistant Kevin D'Emic. The Bears were competitive in the Skyline Conference, and with their first chance to recruit, are looking forward to moving up the ladder next year. Goldberg also led Molloy to the CHSAA Alumni team title while Conor Gallagher took the individual title. It was another great XC season for Rockaway. Indoor is up next!

Snowflake League: Champs Are Crowned By The Commissioner's Office

Another great season is in the books for the Jamaica Bay Babe Ruth Snowflake League. I'd like to thank all team captains for always being accessible and reasonable (well, for the most part). Thank you to all participants (players, coaches, fans) for showing up all season long and giving it your best every night. I would like to thank our new umpires who we hope will sign long term deals to umpire our league. Big thanks to our friends at DJ's at Work for generously donating their equipment so that we can have pre-game festivities for the championship. We played pre-game music, had starting line-ups announced, and played the Star Spangled Banner loud and proud. Out of 28 regular season nights, we only had three rainouts, which is pretty good. The one rainout in the playoffs was unfortunate but four total for the entire season is pretty solid. All sweeps in the playoffs except for one series that went three. Playoffs went smoothly, so now

on to the recaps... Monday night was the makeup of one of the rained out games. This was the 2 vs. 7 matchup between Ruffle Bar and the Black Sox. The first game ended in a football score. The second game was closer but the same deal. A sweep for Ruffle Bar with the scores being 20-3 and 11-3. Ruffle Bar advanced to play Cereal Killers on Wednesday and the Black Sox season was over. Tuesday night was the 1 vs. 5 semi-final series. Rock Fam entered the final inning of game one with a 6-4 lead. Marine Park would go on to score five in the top of the 7th to take a three run lead. had chances in final frame but only got two when they needed three. MP escaped with a one run 'W'. Game Two saw Rock Fam and Marine Park both score five runs in the first inning. MP wound up taking the sweep with the final scores being 9-8 and 17-8. Rock Fam was out, while Marine Park now had a date in the ship. Wednesday night's semi-final series had two close games. The first was won by one and the second game went into extra innings. Didn't receive much info on the games besides the fact that Ruffle Bar was down 8-5 in extras in Game Two and had men on first and second with no

outs. Cereal Killers must have made a defensive stand because these men didn't get home and the score remained the same. An upset sweep for the Cereal Killers as the 3 took down the 2 seed. Final scores were 7-6 and 8-5 F/8. This win by the Cereal Killers put them in the ship and the defending champs Ruffle Bar were sent home. On a cold, windy Thursday night at the sandlot, Marine Park took down the Cereal Killers in sweeping fashion. First game by four and the second game by five. Both sides had fans in the stands and the music was blasting. It was a great night and a great match up. We had a few curse words, no opposite field homers over the fence, a shared video of the 'Mother of Dragons,' and some legit batting practice being taken in the cages. Thanks to all who came out to support. One took down the 3 with the scores being 10-6 and 7-2. Marine Park is the 2017 Jamaica Bay Babe Ruth Snowflake League champ. Congrats!

The Battle for the Fort

The 6th annual "Battle for the Fort" was held this past weekend at Ft. Tilden between the St. Francis de Sales 6th Grade Girls and Boys soccer team. It was a cold and windy day and the Battle was fierce and very competitive - however the boys came out victorious this year. An after party was held at Jameson's Pub and a great time was had by all!
