Best Dressed Man Event Warms Hearts By Katie McFadden

It’s going to be a wonderful holiday season for a family with an autistic loved one. The Best Dressed Man in Rockaway, Owen Loof’s fundraising event on November 16 was a hit that warmed hearts and raised funds for a great cause. The Knights of Columbus was packed on Friday night as friends and family came to support Loof as he debuted his play, “The Missing Kiss,” where an audience member got to

pick the ending. And of course, the happy ending chosen was a good fit for a night of good cheer for a good cause. Loof teamed up with Kami-Leigh Agard, founder of the Rockaway Beach Autism Families group and Rockaway Times reporter, to pull off the event that raised more than $2,000 to make the holidays extra special for a family with an autistic loved one. With food catered by Nana’s Sauce and Elegante, musical performances by The Fabulous Wades, Squid, and The Graytrippers, plus a 50/50 raffle with half the pot donated back by the winner, and Loof’s play ending with a kiss from Olivia, the night warmed hearts, bellies and ears. “Firstly, I would like to thank everyone for making this night possible so that I could dance with Olivia, which was the whole idea behind the night. Thank you all. It worked,” Loof laughed. “But seriously, I want to thank everyone who attended and made the night so successful. It just felt terrific to help families who are

dealing with the challenges of raising autistic children. Hopefully, a night like this can help ease the stress of this challenge for some families. I just want to add that I am so happy and lucky to live in Rockaway with such great family and friends, who are always there to support one another, and of course present the best music. Hold The Grouch, Pass The Turkey Just because I don’t like hugs or waiting on line, doesn’t make me a curmudgeon— which is what somebody called me the other day. Curmudgeon or curmudgeonly, big SAT word, more or less, means grumpy. I confess to opening a thesaurus to be ready for other similar attacks. A curmudgeon might otherwise be known as a sorehead or grouch. Jeez, I haven’t heard ‘sorehead’ since the 70s. I think a sorehead is more likely to lose his temper than a curmudgeon. A curmudgeon

is a basic Debbie Downer or a sourpuss. Just because I don’t like hugs or trick-or-treaters who ring the bell after 8 p.m., doesn’t make me a bellyacher or a crank or crosspatch (never heard that one but since the thesaurus is still open…) Anyway, you won’t hear any grumbling and griping from me because it’s Thanksgiving. I don’t care if the batteries fall out of the remote control, I’m going to be thankful for having a TV—which will allow me to watch King Kong and March of

the Wooden Soldiers on Turkey Day. I don’t know why those two movies became Thanksgiving traditions but I give thanks that they are. I couldn’t be a curmudgeon even if I tried—not with the staff I have. We get this paper out every week and people still say nice things about it. And our volunteer columnists? They get no more compensation than a pat on the back and an occasional, attaboy. Each one is essential to the cornucopia of variety we offer each week. Sorry that I had to bend over backwards to use cornucopia in a sentence but I’m trying to stay with the Thanksgiving theme. I guess I could have said there’s a cornucopia of things to be thankful for. I’m thankful for YOU. The Rockaway community has helped The Rockaway Times flourish. I’m thankful that I have the privilege of knowing people who care for others. With them, it doesn’t look like a burden; it looks like love. I’m thankful for family who are friends and thankful for

Page 5 friends who are family. I’m thankful for all the new friends I’ve made in Rockaway who’ve become old friends. As for my old, old friends, how could I not be thankful for the ties that bind? I’ve got friends from grammar school and high school. We hardly ever see each other but when we do, we pick up right where we left off. You might feel broke once in a while and when you do, it’s worth remembering what George Bailey learned in It’s A Wonderful Life: no man is a failure who has friends. Give me friends over the fancy car and big house any day of the week. My family. My wife and kids. The new place I live in. I’m thankful and I feel like I’m bragging so much that maybe I should just post this on Facebook. I can’t really moan about much, not when I stop and think about the good stuff. Hey, I’m thankful I’ve got 51 other weeks to complain. Happy Thanksgiving!

Army Corps Provides Updates at BHPOA Meeting By Katie McFadden Before the Thanksgiving holiday, on Tuesday, November 20, the Belle Harbor Property Owners Association (BHPOA) meeting gathered at PS 114 to provide updates from the local precinct and elected officials, discuss a new school being constructed across the street and to invite the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to provide an update on their beach protection project, which USACE got brutally honest about. With the public comment period for USACE’s coastal protection plan for Rockaway now closed, BHPOA president Hank Iori invited USACE Project Manager Dan Falt to the meeting to provide some updates. Iori first asked Falt about the timeline. Falt said, “The feasibility report is basically done. We’ve taken the comments and they’re being incorporated into the report and being sent to headquarters, if not the first

week of December, the second week. We’re hoping our Chief of Engineers, Lt. Todd Semonite signs it in a winter timeframe so it goes to the Assistant Secretary of Civil Works and once he signs it, we’re authorized to spend what we need to do the project,” Falt explained, adding that some things will be changed, like where the groins will be. “What we’ve been able to do already is start the design phase, so what you saw in the report, to be honest is ‘crayon drawings.’ As we get into the design, the real engineering work, things can change. We hope to have the first contract awarded this time next year to begin construction,” Falt said. Falt then broke down some of the aspects of the plan, starting with a major feature that is often overlooked. “One of the features that doesn’t get recognition is a sea wall from Beach 9th to Beach 149th. It’s a sand dune, with a wall buried in the dune, and in front of it is large

rocks, and that, combined with beach plantings, will make it look like a regular dune that will offer 150-year level protection, so that is a very significant piece of hardware,” Falt said, adding that these new dunes will be two to three feet higher than the current dunes and the design for access over the dunes will be discussed later with city agencies. Falt explained that the much-discussed groins can only do so much. “The notion is to control the areas that erode the most, so that the whole beach erodes the same way. No matter what, we have to keep renourishing the beach. It erodes, but the last thing we want to do is create another hot spot for hot spot for erosion," Falt said, meaning USACE is willing to work with residents’ pleas for groins further west of Beach 121st. “We surveyed the area and we have a new two-dimensional modeling tool and we’re now looking at groin configurations. For the west

side, we had recommended 12 groins. Now we’re looking at options to make them a little wider or longer, so what you see in the groin field in the report may not be what we present to you this winter, which is good news,” Falt said. With all the talk of the beach protection, the first question asked was, “what about the bayside?” The USACE’s report eliminated much of the bayside protection, including a sea barrier that would cut across Jamaica Bay, to include it in a separate study, as the bayside features, which would require a lot more funding and time to study, would have held back what could take place on the beach. The current study includes minimal protection to bayside areas on the east side of the peninsula, but nothing on the west. A woman said, “As it is now, waves crash over the wall. There’s no barrier. Congrats, Sarah. ***** There was a groundbreaking for the new Far Rockaway library on Monday. Politicians and various officials posed for the usual photo with shovels and hardhats. Truthfully, we’d rather cover the ribbon-cutting and save the

Page 7 congratulations for when a job is done. Too often we celebrate a groundbreaking and then learn about projects running out of money or being delayed. The library is supposed to be completed in 2021. We’ll see. ***** So...we have to acknowledge real progress as a ribbon-cutting occurred at Beach 34th Street on Tuesday. The Beach Channel Senior Apartments, a senior community with 100 percent affordable new apartments for low-income seniors, opened in time for 154 seniors to have new homes for the holidays. PRIME SELL OUT Dear Editor, Your blurb in the 11/15 edition of "High Tide" only showcases some of the many reasons Amazon's HQ2 in Long Island City is bad news for Queens. The most egregious of these reasons is that New York State is essentially gifting nearly $3 billion in tax incentives to a company that is valued at $1 trillion. Imagine what Queens could do with $3 billion allocated towards subways or schools or road improvements. This is corporate welfare at its worst. Progressives-In-Name-Only like Mayor Bill de Blasio and Governor Andrew Cuomo can't get along on any issue of actual substance to everyday New Yorkers (i. e. NYCHA and the MTA), but can miraculously find common ground with this? What frauds and what sellouts. We deserve better. Dylan Watton

One hundred and fifty-four seniors will be home for the holidays. On Tuesday, November 20, a ribbon-cutting was held for Far Rockaway’s Beach Channel Senior Apartments. The new, 100 percent affordable building on Beach 34th Street offers 154 apartments for low-income seniors in Far Rockaway, 46 of which are reserved for formerly homeless seniors. Beach Channel, an Arker Companies development, is one of the first projects completed under the City’s $350 million program to finance affordable housing especially for low-income seniors, launched as part of Mayor de Blasio’s Housing New York plan. On Tuesday, Arker representatives, Councilman Donovan Richards, HPD Commissioner Maria Torres-Springer, Borough President Melinda Katz and other officials, celebrated the ribbon-cutting for the building. “Beach Channel Senior Apartments is exactly the investment

we need that provides affordable apartments for seniors making $36,000 or less,” Councilman Richards said. “We are also filling one of Rockaways greatest needs with a St. John’s Episcopal Hospital healthcare facility on the ground floor, allowing seniors to get day-to-day care right where they live.” Beach Channel Senior Apartments will also offer non-profit services for residents, including supportive counseling, supplemental meals and health care referrals. The New Kids on the Block at Arverne by the Sea By Nicole Taylor-Lang

The peninsula is growing every day with new apartments, houses, restaurants and shops popping up all over. One of the latest arrivals, The Tides at Arverne by the Sea, located between Beach 67th and Beach 69th Street, isn’t just for beachside luxury apartment living; it’s also home to a few new businesses. With the just-opened Vino by the Sea wine store, and the soon-to-come Locals Collective, Cuisine by Claudette, and a two-story restaurant that is still seeking ownership, plus Batesy’s BBQ opening just across the street, Arverne by the Sea will be swimming with new options. The first shop, Vino by the Sea, opened its doors just last weekend. The new addition offers a variety of wines and spirits, but it’s not your average liquor store, according to owner Adam Linet. Don’t expect to see Jack Daniel's Whiskey or Beringer wines, but rather local whiskeys from Brooklyn and wines from Mattituck, LI. Linet, who has been in Arverne for two years, has experience with previous liquor stores and wanted to bring his knowledge to Rockaway. Originally, local builders from the Tides, didn’t want a liquor store, but when Linet pitched his idea, they could not refuse. “People enjoy drinking,” says Linet, plus “we have more of a restaurant hospitality than a store one.” Vino by the Sea will also be offering weekly tasting events, as well as a delivery service, so you can have the convenience of wine and liquor arriving right at your doorstep. Linet says he’s excited to have a business that is “a part of the community.” So if you want to expand your pallet and experience a variety of quality beverages, give Vino by the Sea a try. The next ‘local’ business to open soon is Locals Collective. Locals has been a well-known surf school in Rockaway since 2012. Owners Mike Reinhardt and Mike Kololyan have made quite the team and are eager to expand their enterprise with their storage and locker facili-

ty and cafe. They were the first business to be signed on as one of The Tides’ new tenants. “We have been a mobile operation for quite some time, so we’re excited to have a store front as a home base,” says Mike Reinhardt. With their new space, Locals will now be ‘surfing’ up more than just lessons. Part of the space has already opened, offering individual indoor, heated and cooled, standing lockers for surfers to store their boards and personal items. The storage is accessible for members 24/7 and there are a variety of membership plans. The space also has full bathrooms so members can shower and change, making it a convenient stop for those that don’t live nearby. “The 60s has become a popular surfing area,” says Reinhardt. “Carrying a long board and getting it on the subway is not easy, so we wanted to make it more accessible, not only for locals, but people that travel to the Rockaways.” Still to come is a cafe section for people to grab a bite to eat, and enjoy a coffee, beer, or wine. Locals will also be selling their own branded apparel and will host art galleries and seminars. “We want to consistently improve on our service and find more creative ways to cultivate a surf community,” Reinhardt said. vorite, Cuisine by Claudette. The business has been a big hit on Beach 116th Street since opening in 2012, and expanding to the concessions at Riis Park. Now, owner Claudette Flatow is expanding to Arverne. “It will be the same concept,” Flatow said. “Vegan, vegetarian, healthy foods and juices.” Flatow’s food is made from fresh, quality ingredients and shows Rockaway residents that they can have food that’s not only delicious, but good for you. Her menu items range from salmon cakes, to feta spinach turkey burgers, to vegan grilled cheese; with a variety of options, whether you are vegan, gluten free or an omnivore. Claudette’s will offer delivery service, as they do now, and will showcase their specials and menu items regularly. When asked what her favorite menu item is, Claudette responds, “Everything I do is my favorite,” with a smile. “It’s a great neighborhood and I want to make it better and healthier.” The last new business at The Tides will be a restaurant. They are still seeking out ownership as construction finishes. The restaurant will be two stories and have an outside balcony. “The balcony view will have a

straight shot to the ocean”, says Chris Gonzalez, Vice President of development and acquisitions at the Beechwood organization. Once ownership is determined, more information about the style of restaurant and type of food being offered will be available, but it is guaranteed to offer an ocean view. Across Rockaway Beach Boulevard, at the site of the former Checkers fast food restaurant, will be Rockaway’s newest BBQ spot, Batesy’s, and it’s in familiar hands. Batesy’s is being opened by the owners of Pico Mexican restaurant on Beach 129th Street. Batesy’s will offer a bit of a different concept. Instead of ordering from a waiter, you will order from the counter and get a ticket. After you order, grab a table, inside or outside, and a staff member will bring you your food. “The idea is to have fast, casual and quicker service says,” says Chris Miles, one of the partners. A take-out counter will be available as well. Batesy’s will not only offer favorite BBQ items like brisket and pork, but it will have a bar with craft beer and cocktails. “We will have our own twist on traditional drinks like an Old Fashioned, Manhattan and Negroni,” Miles said. The restaurant is expected to open in January. Miles credits business partner, Bill Keating, with making the new restaurant possible. “He’s a huge part of our success as well, which without Pico, there would be no Batesy’s,” Miles said. Although the cuisine will be different, many can expect the same quality as Pico. Miles says the goal is to have “good, simple food done right.” Local residents are already looking forward to the new additions. “It’s a fantastic thing that Rockaway is expanding. I like that an area, once completely written off, is now the place to be,” says Rockaway resident Richard Bennick. Erika Gordon, one of Arverne by the Sea’s newest residents says, “I think it’s great that the community is getting more restaurants and shops. It brings more to the area for families and friends.”

High Steaks by the Sea By Yamila Frej

From pancakes to dinner plates, the Belle Harbor Steak House has been known among locals to serve a variety of classic American and Italian dishes, and of course, high quality steaks and seafood, on Beach 116th Street. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the closest thing youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find to a diner in town, or the perfect local spot for a formal steak dinner, all wrapped into one. Established in 2004, the Steak House just celebrated its 14th anniversary this month on November 9. Though itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s considered native to Rockaway, its unique history has foreign roots in the journey of an adventurous teenager overseas. The story begins with a 19year old, Jimmy Condolios, co-owner of the Steak House, venturing out from home in Greece. Condolios, second cook on a ship for three years, jumped ship to America in 1962. At separate times, both Condolios and partner, Mike

Mallas, abandoned their work at sea. They later met in Brooklyn. Condolios found work cooking in different restaurants for the next ten years before opening his first business with Mallas in 1972. For many years, they owned two restaurants, one of which was the Golden Ox Restaurant, which seated 300 on Avenue U in Brooklyn. As Mallas and Condolios considered retiring, the pair took a brief leave of absence, and sold their business. However, when they found their spot in Rockaway, they decided they werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quite finished with the restaurant business after all. Ever since then, Condolios claims, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Business, thank God, we have plenty. The same customers come back and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a beautiful thing.â&#x20AC;? The restaurant seats 70 and offers breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner, but this wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always the case. The Steak House was quick to make dynamic changes to

adapt to the needs of Rockaway, trying to survive a natural disaster in 2012. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Before Hurricane Sandy, I was open only for dinner. After Sandy, to help the community, I opened up for breakfast. I was one of the first to open, and I was very, very busy,â&#x20AC;? Condolios explained. Following the change, the signs of the Belle Harbor Steak House were changed to the Belle Harbor Diner. Though often busy, the 75-year-old works along with his staff for almost 14 hours a day, seven days a week, to keep everything running smoothly. As for Mallas, Condolios noted, â&#x20AC;&#x153;he got a little sick and heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s out of the business, but he comes almost every day.â&#x20AC;? The tight-knit team consists of four cooks, three weekday waiters, five weekend waiters, and two busboys. â&#x20AC;&#x153;One of the cooks is from Brooklyn and heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been with me for 29 years. The other guys have been here since the opening,â&#x20AC;? Condolios said. The main cook has served with him for 33 years. Of the maĂŽtre dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, Condolios noted, â&#x20AC;&#x153;We used to work together in Brooklyn. From the time I opened [in Rockaway], Mike has been with me. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in the front, but he also works for the kitchen. He knows the whole daily special.â&#x20AC;? Mike, the maĂŽtre dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, has been serving by his side for 45 years. Through years of experience, Condolios has established his own way of running business. For instance, the Steak House serves from opening to closing,

with no exceptions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sometimes at night, I try to leave at nine, but I see people coming in and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t leave because they have to be served. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s my way,â&#x20AC;? Condolios explained. Over anything, Condolios emphasized that quality and customer satisfaction are his top priorities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I believe in quality. Any merchandise that comes into the store, I have to check. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s my policy. If a customer has a complaint, I correct it right away,â&#x20AC;? he said. Besides the quality cuisine, the above and beyond customer service is another aspect that makes the Belle Harbor Steak House a local delight. Whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Condolios or other staff approaching tables to make sure everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s satisfied, or a friendly smile from the delivery people that brings meals, along with the hot rolls and butter that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d find on your table if you were dining in, the staff makes its customers feel welcome whether at home or in the Steak House. Of his experience, Condolios said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m in this business for 55 years and I love what Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m doing, I love the business. And as always, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m trying to do better.â&#x20AC;? The Belle Harbor Steak House is located at 268 Beach 116th Street. So all this beach protection is still not helping?” to which Falt said, “No.” This led to another resident asking a question that’s a hard pill to swallow. “So basically you’re telling us that in 50 years or so, Rockaway is going to be under water?” Falt responded, “In 50 years, the drains will be backing up constantly. I don’t want to say fight and retreat, but…” His answer trailed off as chatter filled the auditorium. The next hot-button issue was the construction of a new school building for PS 256, a school for special-needs students, across the street from PS 114. Many, including Iori

and teacher, Barbara Larkin, expressed anger and concern over the lack of community input on the new building. Iori explained that he worked with Community Board 14 (CB14) to have a meeting with the NYC School Construction Authority (SCA) when he first learned about the project in July 2017, but the SCA allegedly told CB14 that a meeting wasn’t necessary since this project is meant to replace an existing school instead of creating a brand new one. Some particularly brought up the playground aspect of the new school, saying it should have been planned with community input, as it is something that could be utilized by the neighborhood. Robby Schwach of Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office acknowledged that the community should have been more involved and suggested that if people have recommendations, since the building hasn’t been built yet, to provide them to him so he can pass them to the SCA. He also cleared up some rumors

about the school, explaining that the new school will have the same number of students as it currently does instead of the rumored 400+. “The current school can take 120 students. Currently there are only 88. The new school will allow for 122 students. They plan for that number, but right now, there aren’t enough special-needs kids to fill the register,” he said. He added that the SCA will be at the next meeting in December and can address concerns. Captain Louron Hall of the 100th Precinct spoke about some recent thefts, including burglaries at homes and grand larceny from a vehicle. He advised people to lock doors and windows, and not leave valuables in plain sight. He also said that NCO Supervisor Sgt. Julieann Stapleton has been promoted to lieutenant and Officer Turner has been selected to fill her spot. Local elected officials then provided some updates, including Senator Joe Addabbo and Assemblywoman Stacey

The Rockaway Times Pheffer Amato, who were both recently re-elected. Addabbo touched upon the voting issues on election day, with scanning machines going down. He mentioned that the next session day in Albany will be January 9, where he vowed to discuss protecting the voting process. As far as the USACE plan goes, he said that if the NYS Department of Environmental Conversation has a role in the approval process for the plan, then he plans to urge the commissioner to really listen to resident input. Pheffer Amato said she will continue to push the mayor and others to provide funding for additional groins to protect the west end of the beach. She also gave a heads up about upcoming naloxone training sessions in December for people to learn how to prevent overdose deaths. Groundbreaking! Far Rock Library Project Begins Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the start of a new era for the Far Rockaway Library. Construction can now officially begin on the brand new, state of the art, 18,000 square feet, $33.6 million facility. On Monday, November 19, City officials and local politicians gathered at the site of the future library to participate in a groundbreaking ceremony. Officials from the de Blasio administration, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, Councilman Donovan Richards, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, Senator James Sanders and CB 14 District Manager Jon Gaska joined Queens Library President and CEO Dennis M. Walcott, to dig in the first shovels on the highly anticipated project that is expected to be complete in 2021. The old Far Rockaway Library officially closed on September 28 to make way for the new building, while a temporary library at 1003 Beach 20th Street was set up to serve community members until the new building is complete. The $33.6 million project

is being managed by the NYC Department of Design and Construction and funded by capital investments from the Office of the Queens Borough President ($21.25 million); Mayor Bill de Blasio and the NYC Economic Development Corporation, ($19.4 million), Councilman Richards ($3.24 million) and Assemblywoman Pheffer Amato ($250,000). â&#x20AC;&#x153;This library has had a special place in the hearts and minds of our staff and the community over the years, but never more so than in the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy in 2012,â&#x20AC;? President Walcott said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a lifeline for many residents, becoming a meeting point, a food and supply distribution center and more. Its stunning new replacement will amplify the role of the library in the community even further, serving as a major learning and technology hub.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Far Rockaway residents rely heavily on the amazing services offered at Queens Library, which is why this groundbreaking for a

The new, energy-efficient building will allow for much more programming and resources than before. Beach 94/95th DOT Safety Improvements To Begin

Beach 94th and 95th, approaching the Cross Bay Brige, are about to get safer for drivers, pedestrians and bikers alike. GOOD HEAT Finland has had a long tradition of sauna bathing for pleasure and relaxation. On average, most Finns take sauna baths two to three times a week, and saunas are publicly widely available. Recently, there has been mounting evidence that the use of saunas offers a multitude of health benefits. During the past decade there has been a considerable amount of research data from various countries on the potential benefits of sauna bathing. That evidence points to sauna bathing as alleviating and preventing both acute and chronic disease conditions. There are different forms of passive heat therapy, including

Turkish baths, infrared sauna, Waon therapy, and hot water immersion. But the recent evidence points to the positive benefits of Finnish sauna bathing. Finnish saunas are characterized by exposure to high environmental temperature, typically 80 to 100 degrees Celsius, with low humidity of about 20 percent. The humidity may be increased by pouring water over the hot rocks that heat the sauna. The interior of the sauna is usually made of wood with wooden seats. Beyond pleasure and relaxation, the recent evidence points to reductions in the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), stroke,

and neurocognitive diseases (i.e. dementia). In addition, non-vascular diseases such as the common flu show improvement as well as certain skin diseases, headaches, and rheumatic diseases. In the Finnish model, a person remains in the sauna for approximately 15 to 20 minutes, followed by a shower or swim. The physiological responses produced by the sauna correspond to those produced by moderate to high intensity exercise such as walking. These responses include an increased heart rate and blood pressure. It is thought that the beneficial effects of saunas occur due to overall reduction of blood pressure, improvement in endothelial function (relates to stiffness of blood vessels), reduction in oxidative stress and inflammation, improved lipid profile, improvement in the cardiorespiratory system, and improvement of the autonomic nervous system. While it was thought that those with underlying CVD should avoid sauna use, that is no longer the case. Finnish

The Rockaway Times sauna bathing has an overall good safety profile and studies have shown improvement in the health of those with stable angina pectoris (chest pain), recent heart attacks, and heart failure. Studies have shown improvement in cardiac output, blood pressure, and overall heart function and oxygen levels. While there have been reports of sudden deaths with the use of a sauna, the vast majority of these cases have been linked to alcohol consumption, which is a major contraindication to the use of a sauna. In addition, those with unstable CVD or other unstable diseases should avoid saunas. Further research is needed to assess the positive effects of sauna bathing that studies have shown so far. By the way, in case you are wondering, this column is based on a review article that appeared in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings. CONTENTMENT During this time of year, we think about giving thanks. It is a great time to appreciate what we have in our lives: families, friends, pets, comforts, joys. Perhaps we make a toast at our Thanksgiving meal. It is a great reminder to put aside all that is not positive in our lives and to be grateful. Being grateful on a daily basis, 365 days a year, is a beneficial tool to cultivate contentment in our lives. There are actually scientific studies to back this up. If you are one to experiment and take your own study to see

if something is real or not, and then put it into practice, that is great. If you need evidence, here it is: “Feelings of gratitude activate the part of the brain that produces dopamine, a messenger molecule that stimulates your brain’s reward and pleasure center. . .” “One powerful effect of gratitude is that it can boost serotonin (a contributor to feelings of well-being and happiness).” The Upward Spiral: Using Neuro-Science to Reverse the Course of Depression - Alex Korb

The fact that practicing gratitude gives an overall feeling of well-being and contentment is proof in the pudding. Scientists seek answers and do find them as noted above, answering the “why.” The key to it is to practice a sustained practice of gratitude. We sometimes do it for a couple of days here and there, which is good in itself, but sustained practice brings a sustained result—a change in how we feel. I do make it a practice every day to be grateful for all of my comforts: clean water, hot shower, comfortable, warm bed, good food, etc. I say it to myself when I’m taking a shower or eating or when I go to bed. I periodically contemplate my work, the yoga studio, and say to myself what I am grateful for in these parts of my life. I have an inner dialogue to say the words so that they become part of me. I know that my feeling of contentment is a result of my positivizing my thoughts. So one way to arrive at contentment is to practice gratitude daily, accepting and appreciating what we have and who we are at the present moment.

Page 27 In our yoga studio, we mostly practice asana (poses) and pranayama (breath practice) and we refer to some of the other “eight limbs of yoga.” One of them is the second limb of "niyama," which refers to inner observances and self-discipline bringing us to our own inner truth. The second of the "niyamas" is “santosh,”—contentment. A sustained practice of gratitude leads to sustained contentment. A sustained practice of contentment leaves us better equipped to deal with something that causes displeasure or dissatisfaction or unhappiness or pain or anything really unpleasant. Make it a practice every day: in the morning, in the evening and throughout the day! (Some of the thoughts in this column were inspired by “Yoga for Healthy Aging - The Biochemical Basis for a Gratitude Practice” by Nina.) May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

By Beth Hanning Shoutout To Good Things As I wrote a few weeks ago, I love Thanksgiving. I love the food and the low pressure of no presents, just getting the house ready (which I should be doing now but I am writing my column). A shoutout to one of the few Thanksgiving songs that I’m currently listening to is Bing Crosby: “I’ve Got Plenty to be Thankful For” from Holiday Inn. Here are a few things I am thankful for: My town: Often when I speak about Rockaway at work, my

friends are often so intrigued that my local physician was my mom’s physician (Dr. Peter Galvin), and that his wife still answers the phone when I call. There is no “press one for a human, press two if you are a medical doctor.” I know that I can call and Mrs. Galvin will answer the phone. I love our summers and riding bicycles around town, and the camaraderie we have amongst ourselves. The problems of the world seem to slip away

My dad: For those of my loyal readers, you know I often write about my father. I truly enjoy his text messages and trying to decipher the meaning. Sometimes I just respond with a “?” My favorite is when my friends ask: What does your dad think about the storm? I got this text last weekend then, as if he heard them: “Could get ugly drive slow, flood warning a.m. tide keep urself. Up to date!!!!!” Yes, five exclamation points. My dad loves a nice exclamation point. Seriously though, he is the best weatherman around and is always more

I get multiple texts when snowstorms are predicted, “What does your dad say?” I also appreciate my dad for getting me the new releases in the library and delivering them to my kitchen island. My daughters are super good to me and both drive, so I can boss them around to do chores for me and drive me places. My husband is a saint in that he has put up with me for over 26 years. HAPPY THANKSGIVING BROAD CHANNEL! In Broad Channel, as anywhere that people celebrate Thanksgiving, thoughts of our families are foremost in our minds. What makes our community special is the fact that we tend to view our little community on the bay not simply as a neighborhood, but as our "home," and our friends and neighbors as extended family. Hard to believe in this day and age, but Thanksgiving in Broad Channel still remains a family-centric holiday, consisting of a day of humble introspection with an accompanying acknowledgment of and a real appreciation for the myriad blessings we all enjoy. Okay, don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to imply that Thanksgiving celebrations in the Channel are a "Mayberry RFD" affair, but unlike many other communities, we continually struggle to ward

off the otherwise widespread transformation of Thanksgiving into a "gateway commercial holiday," almost indistinguishable from the following day's ("Black Friday") start of a frenzied and seemingly endless number of holiday sales in an effort to maintain our comfortable niche on the Thanksgiving celebration scale, which leans more towards Norman Rockwell rather than Norman Bates. Oftentimes it's hard to explain to those who do not live here, exactly what it is that makes our small town so unique. I always tell those who are curious enough to inquire, that without a sense of caring, there can be no sense of community. Those of us who live here can appreciate the extensive sense of caring shared by all residents for each other, our town and our environment. It is this strong sense of caring that binds all of us together as a community. This sense of caring has served our town well since 1875 but is probably best exemplified by

the devastation wrought by Super Storm Sandy back in October of 2012. In the space of but a few hours, the waters of the Atlantic Ocean surged into Jamaica Bay and rolled across our island, transforming the vibrant 21st century town of Broad Channel into an early 1800s coastal village lacking power, communication, transportation, fuel, sanitation, food, habitable living space, churches and schools. The realization slowly dawned on all of us that not only had we suffered incredible individual losses, we had also lost what most of us hold most dear...that which keeps us anchored to our island community – our town. Although the Thanksgiving immediately following Sandy was celebrated as best we could with shared turkey dinners at the American Legion, it was perhaps a holiday more memorable than those past as each of us had the opportunity to realize just how much we had to be thankful for as we prepared

to pull together to restore our community! And pull together as a community we did! Together we shared laughter, tears, frustration, elation, sorrow, hope, food, drink, showers, towels, soap, clothes, money, tools and much more. But most importantly, together we endured that disaster and came away from the shared experience with a new sense of hope and purpose. Six years later, as we all celebrate Thanksgiving this week in 2018, we should all be thankful and proud of the fact that, regardless of any adversity thrown our way, we remain a united, strong and caring community, very much alive with the hopes and aspirations of all our residents. Although I, like many of you, may often take this grand old town of ours for granted, I think on this Thanksgiving Day our small island community on the bay deserves a special shout-out. New Look, New Outlook Dear Enchantress, I have recently lost a lot of weight. I have been receiving a lot of positive attention. It feels crazy! I use to weigh 65 pounds more than I did now. I admit it, I was kind of a mess. I was always in sweatpants, free t-shirts I got from events, and my hair in a bun. I never wore makeup, even when I was young, so only sometimes would I put on blush and lipstick. I think I look pretty now, I worked hard, changed my food, and I work out three to five times a week. I never felt pretty. My older sister is beautiful, and I was a good helper to my family, so I used to get compliments when I was younger. But now, I get so much attention, but I see myself and think of myself as the same. I mean I know I look different, but in my mind, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m still overweight and messy, and every time someone gives me a compliment, I have these mixed feelings of embarrassment, shame and happiness, and I get slightly annoyed. My question is: how do I start feeling like the person that people are complimenting? Dear Slim Shady!!! Congratulations on your new, healthier you! Releasing pounds comes with the releasing of a lot of mental chatter and exchanging it for new mental chatter. That part never ends. Going through this transition is a powerful one. We carry snapshots of ourselves at different points of our lives, and it helps our minds (and egos) feel â&#x20AC;&#x153;safe.â&#x20AC;? So your mixed feelings are normal. Your old mental tapes

donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fit anymore, so you get the compliment and â&#x20AC;&#x153;does not computeâ&#x20AC;? shows up. One word comes up here for me to share: SUPPORT. Transitioning and enjoying your metamorphosis can be more helpful with another person who understands you, or who has been through a similar experience. In the meantime, have you bought new clothes? It’s Diabetes Awareness Month: DIABETES AND THE SKIN

Diabetes is highly prevalent in the United States. More personal healthcare resources are estimated to be spent on diabetes than on any other health problem. Besides managing their blood sugar, diabetics must be monitored for complications, such as vision changes, heart disease and kidney damage. Skin problems are common as well. The increase in blood sugar disrupts the normal function and structure of the skin. These changes can lead to a wide variety of skin diseases. Skin infections are common in patients with diabetes. Elevated blood sugar disrupts the normal immune response to bacteria, fungi and viruses. A common yeast, along with other types of fungi, can cause infections of the skinfolds,

mouth, nails and corners of the mouth. Bacterial infections, like staph skin infections and outer ear infections are more prevalent too. If a skin infection is suspected, prompt evaluation with a physician is required. Some of these infections may be subtle, so diabetics and their caregivers should maintain a high index of suspicion. Treatment of skin infections varies and often involves adjusting skin hygiene. Diabetics may have decreased sensation and peripheral vascular disease, which makes the feet especially prone to skin problems. These issues can lead to ulcers and other problems as well. It is recommended that people with diabetes have annual foot examinations to screen for these problems. Regular foot care can help prevent many of these conditions.

Diabetics should avoid going barefoot, keep their toenails trimmed to the shape of the toe, file any sharp nail edges, and wash and check their feet every day. Shoes should have a snug fit and not be tight. Patients who are obese with diabetes often have skin changes observed on the back of the neck and in the skin folds. This condition, named acanthosis nigricans, is characterized by darkening and thickening of the skin, rendering a velvet-like appearance. These areas of the skin may also develop skin tags, which are small flaps of skin that hang off the body. The presence of acanthosis nigricans in an individual without diabetes, may be an indicator for developing diabetes in the future. Dry skin, also known as xerosis, is frequently seen in people with diabetes. Adjust-

ing skin care is key to treating dry skin. Bathing in lukewarm water once a day for a short period of time is helpful. Bathing in hot water for a long duration of time further exacerbates dry skin. Soaps for sensitive skin, like Dove© or Cetaphil©, are recommended. Any soap that leaves your skin feeling sticky or tight is too harsh. Moisturizing twice a day with a fragrance-free cream or lotion is important too. Applying moisturizer within a few minutes after bathing traps moisture into the skin. SVC Shamrocks Crowned Champs Saturday evening November 10, was by all accounts quite late in the season for a CYO soccer game. Two preceding weekends of poor weather forced the delay of a championship game that was highly anticipated. The sixth-grade boys of St. Virgilius-St. Camillus (SVC) were chomping at the bit to get on the field and take one more shot at what has proven to be quite the elusive prize. Even a midweek snowstorm wouldn't stop this game as Soccer Commissioner Lisa Sacco personally worked on the field at the Broad Channel Athletic Club to ensure the game was played. And so finally at 5:30 p.m. on a cold and windy night, the game was played. SVC and St. Andrews squared off in what was a rematch from last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s championship that saw St. Andrews take the prize. That loss was one of three consecutive losses for the boys from SVC in the finals. Needless to say, they were long over-

corner kick from Michael Naslukiewicz to make it 2-1. Two minutes later, the highly skilled David Villareal rushed up the field in amazing fashion and fed Casey Allen a beautiful pass for Allen's second of the game and the eventual game winner. The Shamrocks defense was stingy and smart all day. AJ St. Omer played a brilliant game at sweeper, keeping St. Andrews away from goalie Michael Kelly. When St. Andrews would manage a shot, Kelly displayed remarkable poise and skill playing goalie at an extraordinary level, particularly because he was forced into the position due to starting goalie Alexie Humukchand's untimely injury. St. Andrews would add a goal in extra time to make it 3-2, but the Shamrocks clamped down defensively, and as time expired, these exceptional boys from St. Virgilius-St. Camillus were finally Champions!!
