Rockaway Residents Make Best of Ferry Flop By Katie McFadden
“Now we can all say we’ve been rescued at sea,” Belle Harbor resident Leslie Mahoney, who was on the 5:15 p.m. Rockaway-bound ferry that got stuck shortly after departing Pier 11 on Monday, November 27. Getting stuck on a ferry may seem like no laughing matter, but according to Mahoney, one of the approximately 114 passengers on board, “in true Rockaway fashion,” the riders kept in good spirits during their unique trip home, in which the boat stopped shortly after departure. “It was a very interesting evening,” Mahoney said in a phone call to The Rockaway Times on Tuesday. hattan’s Ulysses’ Folk House, which had a kitchen fire earlier that day, Mahoney and her friends caught an early ferry in hopes of grabbing dinner at Sheepshead Bay. However, their plans were once again set afloat when the boat suddenly stopped moving. “It wasn’t a jarring first stop,” Rockaway resident Joe Keenan, who was also on board said. The stop was so subtle, that Mahoney didn’t realize at first. “I was trying to do something on my phone, which requires my complete attention, so I didn’t even realize we weren’t moving. Then the guy next to me says, ‘We’re stuck on a sandbar,’” Mahoney recalled. Instead of panic, Mahoney says the feeling on board was rather, “fun.” “Everybody is laughing, somebody starts play-
ing music from the Titanic movie on their phone, as only Rockaway can do. Another guy goes, ‘shit, the 6:15 p.m. just left. Now we’re hysterically laughing,” Mahoney said.

put on life jackets as a precaution. “We look at each other and say, are you kidding me? We realized we were about 100 feet from the pier, and figure we’re from Rockaway, most of us can swim.� Despite the irony, the passengers obliged. “Everybody is trying to help everyone put their the life jackets on. They were these tiny little things that we were trying to fit over our chests. We kept laughing and all I could think, instead of being scared was, I wonder if there are any potato chips on this boat. I hadn’t eaten since breakfast in anticipation of having lobster. I was starving,� Mahoney joked. Mahoney didn’t get potato chips, but did get another treat. “We were rescued by the cutest police and firemen in the world. I thought it was my lucky day,� she said. NYPD and FDNY marine units showed up on scene to help transfer passengers on to smaller rescue boats so that they could be brought back to Pier 11. “The police and firemen did a good job. They got us off
the boat fast,� Keenan said. By 7 p.m. the 120 people on board, including six crewmembers, disembarked. The passengers were put on the next ferry and made it back to Rockaway by 8:15 p.m. “I never got my lobster dinner,� Mahoney joked. However, the passengers didn’t go empty-handed. “On the boat back, they opened up the bar and told everyone to help themselves. A real party took place. It was a fun time,� Mahoney said. Other passengers agreed that there was no panic
on board, but they were inconvenienced by the mishap. “I was never panicked, more like annoyed, “ Rockaway resident Marta Roginski said. A paper was passed around for passengers to put down their contact info so that NYC Ferry could send everyone a free 30-day ferry pass for their troubles. It wasn’t until later in the evening that passengers learned what happened. “We were told we were stuck in the mud,� Keenan said. “We didn’t hear anything about a pylon.� “It turns out we weren’t on a sandbar after all. While waiting to disembark, a guy in a yellow suit comes on, soaking wet and I said ‘where’ve you been?’ He said, ‘Under the boat, trying to see how bad the hole is.’ I said, ‘well I’m getting off, so I’m not worried’ and we laughed. There was a hole in the boat? Nobody told us that,� Mahoney said. NYC Ferry officials said the boat hit a submerged object, which was likely a pylon from an old pier. Passengers were unaware that the pylon had ripped open two holes in the
Page 3 MV Zelinsky, the boat the passengers were on that evening, and that the boat was taking on water. The MV Zelinsky is not one of the new boats created for the citywide ferry service. It is an older vessel used by operator Hornblower as a spare. Spares are currently being used as six of the new ferry boats were recently taken out of service to undergo repairs and inspections. Despite so many boats being out of service, NYC Ferry says service and schedules will not be impacted as these inspections and repairs are being done in the off season. NYC Ferry is continuing to investigate how Monday’s incident occurred. Despite Monday’s mishap, Mahoney says she’ll be back on board. “This doesn’t intimidate us. We survived a hurricane. This is nothing. This was an adventure. When I write my memoir, I can say I was saved at sea by a bunch of good-looking cops and firemen,� Mahoney said. “You get lemons and make lemonade. Include Me Out Can they call them something besides old white men? That hits a little close to home. One of my follicle-challenged brothers has said, bald people are the last group no one has any hesitation to make fun of. You can’t mention race, religion or body shape without triggering a protest rally. But bald guys are still fair game. It’s an outrage, the bowling ball head, mutters. Well, old white men are the new bald guys. And I’m not being redundant. Plenty of old white men (OWM)
just want to be left alone with their varicose veins, ear hair, and TV remote. When they hear about old white men, (the patriarchy!) being blamed for all of society’s ills, their reaction is, huh? Me? What’d I do? The difference between dinosaurs and human dinosaurs (aka the Over The Hill Gang aka old white guys) is that the human kind know they’re about to become extinct. Dinosaurs were prancing around eating grass and other dinosaurs, I guess, when they looked up and saw an asteroid heading their way. There was
no video but I figure they did what humans do when disaster strikes. They yelled out, “Holy shit!” I never use such language but watch any video of disaster and those two words are invariably uttered by witnesses and sometimes victims. Human dinosaurs, most older white dudes, won’t be yelling Holy Anything because they’re not going to be surprised. There’s no escaping — extinction forces are underway. They see it, they get it. Many just want to fade away and not get noticed. You’re taught not to generalize about groups and it seems like a reasonable concept and the charitable thing to do. When you’re the one being generalized about, when you’re the one being lumped in, you want to scream that’s not fair. But if you do, you’ll be reminded of your privilege. And then be told, that’s too bad. To generalize, older white guys have done themselves no favors lately. They keep getting accused of sexual harassment and even worse things. They’re blamed for everything that’s wrong with government. Some say the New York
subway system is in crisis because old white guys are running it. All that may be true but do we old regular white guys have to be lumped in with those other white guys? What about us poor schmucks who were never in the good old boys’ club? It was our privilege to pick up their crumbs. Now, we’re in the club? There’s a big difference from being on a dollar bill than scratching your whole life to hold onto a few. I like to see the high and mighty get taken down as much as the next revolutionary, but can’t another label be attached? Old white men being blamed for everything covers a lot of old white men. Kathy Griffin, the comedian, essentially committed professional suicide when she held up a bloody Donald Trump head in a photo shoot. When her apologies didn’t quite revive her career, she cried, “There's a bunch of old white guys trying to silence me!” Really? The old guys are that powerful? Well, then what took them so long? For those lumping all us OWM together: get off my lawn.

The New York Post reported three ferries had to be taken out of service because they were leaking. And then on Monday evening the ferry to Rockaway ran aground just off Pier 11. The naysayers were yelling (ferries were not built right, the ferry captain should know better, etc., etc.), but we like what we heard from one of the passengers as he arrived home in Rockaway after the boat got stuck, “Ah, it wasn’t that bad.” Complainers can take the A train or join the mess on Woodhaven.

Commemorating The Life of Sister Maura Clarke By Kami-Leigh Agard
Thirty-five years ago, on December 2, 1980, a Rockaway lantern of selfless love, Maryknoll Sister Mary Elizabeth Clarke (affectionately called Maura by her family), was abducted, raped and executed, along with three other American churchwomen, Ursuline Sister Dorothy Kazel, Jean Donovan, a lay missionary and Ita Ford, by members of the National Guard of El Salvador. It was the Cold War era in which El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Central America in general were on the frontlines of American foreign policy. Then President Ronald Reagan was rigorously fighting to prevent left-wing guerrilla leaders in the region from coming to power. However, Clarke and her fellow missionaries were war casualties whose selfless work with the poor, ultimately led to their horrific assassination, and opened the American publicâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eyes to the U.S.
government's support and training of Central American repressive regimes. Some longtime Rockaway residents may remember Sister Maura Clarkeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family of Belle Harbor. According to the recently published book, â&#x20AC;&#x153;A Radical Faith: The Assassination of Sister Maura,â&#x20AC;? by Eileen Markey, Mary McCloskey, Clarkeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mom, originally from County Antrim, Ireland, studied nursing in Dublin. Her dad, John, was born in Sligo. He had been involved with the Irish Republican Brotherhood, and then the IRA. In 1922, when Irishmen were fighting each other in Dublin, John brought a wounded comrade to a convalescent home. Mary was the nurse who admitted them. That was the day she met John. They married in New York in 1930, where they had three children, Maura, Buddy and Judy. In 1934, the Clarkes moved to Rockaway, known then as â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Irish Riviera.â&#x20AC;? Camillus, St. Frances de Sales (SFDS) and Stella Maris High School. Though she initially intended to become a teacher, she joined the Maryknoll Sisters in 1950, and made her first vows in 1953. Initially, as she stated in a letter on January 25, 1950, she had been attracted to Maryknoll by a deep desire â&#x20AC;&#x153;to
become closer to God and to serve Him.â&#x20AC;? And serve she did as a nun initially amongst immigrant communities in the Bronx before she dedicated her life to missionary work in Central America. According to Monsignor Martin Geraghty, who served as pastor of St. Francis de Sales for 18 years, now pastor emeritus of St. Robert Bellarmine parish in Bayside, Queens, Sister Clarke was the epitome of the Maryknoll faith. Geraghty said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;To this day, these sisters and priests continually dedicate their lives to helping the poor. As specifically stated in the book about Sister Clarke, the Maryknoll Sisters were concerned about the armed governments in Central America during the very turbulent late 1970s and early 1980s, and tragically lost their lives as missionaries just humbly working to help the oppressed. witness is in how they were able to identify with the poor who were suffering under the vicious dictatorship of these regimes.” Msgr. Geraghty continued, “During this holiday season, though we are blessed to live in the U.S., with people lining up at the stores to grab the discounts, there are constant reminders of people around the world and the country, who are going without, due to hurricanes, earthquakes and other disasters. However, the holiday season is a time when people do try to be generous with their giving. Along with getting the pair of shoes that they like, there are folks who still make the effort to donate to those in need. It’s a balance we should all mindfully make to help others, while enjoying the festivities of the season. We should think of the holidays not just as a receiving time, but as a giving time.”

Geraghty said he remembers Clarke’s family during his tenure serving at SFDS. “I knew Maura’s father. Mr. Clarke attended church in the late 1980s when he was still alive.” Though Maura’s body was buried in El Salvador, in keeping with the Maryknoll tradition that you are buried where you
served, in the early 1980s, the Clarke family held a special mass for Maura commemorating her life at SFDS, which the family’s home parish. Sister Clarke’s memory has been immortalized in the Rockaways at the now closed, Stella Maris High School, which housed the Maura
Page 9 Clarke Junior High School. Also today, the SFDS Catholic Academy has an honor society named after her, the Sister Maura Clarke National Junior Honor Society, whose mission (according to their website) is “to create enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to render service, promote leadership, develop character, and to encourage good citizenship amongst students.” In Brooklyn, there is the Maura Clarke-Ita Ford Center, a social/educational institution for immigrant women. Dear Editor: The D Piper Inn Hotel will be closing its doors to the public this Spring 2018. However, we will, in no way, stop aggressively voicing the issues that have been allowed to fester in Rockaway Park for 30 years … (i.e. the sub-standard nursing homes, current NYC Public Housing that demoralizes our society, this community, and most importantly, the souls in them). We will remain ever vigilant and will voice our objections as needed. YOU CAN COUNT ON IT! Indeed, we will be poised to ACT, and will, where appropriate. We will not be intimidated by elected officials or City agencies, which are advancing the best interests of local community boards and their agents, without regard for the people themselves. The D. Piper Inn remains standing, but sadly not as a public hotel. We have few regrets as we take another path. The D Piper Inn has not been sold. It will remain under family control, but unfortunately will no longer operate as a public hotel or a public inn. Our most sincere thanks to all those who have supported us over the last 17 years. The Rockaway Times to Rockaway. Shifting shorelines, both on the ocean and beach side, are normal for barrier islands (Rockaway was not always a peninsula). The natural sea current runs westward off of Rockaway, sweeping beach sand with it. That is the reason the Breezy Point jetty was built — it prevented the sands from filling in Ambrose Channel, a vital shipping lane. In the early 1970s, I was a lifeguard at Beach 98th Street. At that time we had no lifeguard chairs and we sat on the boardwalk steps as at high tide, the ocean ran under the boardwalk. There were wooden jetties but they were ineffective and created underwater hazards. East of Beach 98th Street, there were large beach areas as the stone jetties, or groins, prevented beach erosion. There is no question that those stone groins should have been, and should be now, constructed to the west to prevent beach erosion. Periodically pumping sand onto vanished beaches is a waste of money, not to mention an exercise in futility. Peter Galvin
Parking Gripe Dear Editor: I appreciate the detailed response to my initial message (from Danny Ruscillo, Nov. 16). I've been living in the Surfside buildings for close to three years now and I have yet to see an accident in my time there, though I've seen my share of near misses. I suppose it's a case of if a tree falls in the forest but no one's around to hear it still makes a sound. As you mentioned, turn signals would be far more appropriate than turn lanes that take up free street parking spaces. But you did not address the other major complaint I have — Rockaway's parking inequality problem. I understand that the residents of Belle Harbor and Neponsit pay taxes and buy homes with the expectation that street parking will not be allowed on summer weekends. But guess Continued on page 14

tory! I feel Dylan Watton’s parking pain (Letters) where he lamented the loss of a few more parking spots on Beach 108th Street. Unfortunately the war against parking spots on summer weekends is not just a Neponsit/ Belle Harbor thing but in parts of Rockaway Park too. Restricting parking seems to be an effective tool for keeping out visitors but actually causes more aggravation for residents. Sort of like cutting off our nose to spite our face. A proposal for additional parking on Shore Front Parkway proved very unpopular and was recently voted down by CB 14. Even more aggravating than losing parking spots is DOT’s policy of removing entire lanes of traffic on nearly every east-west road on the peninsula. All in the name of progressive, err, progress of course! The City is involved in a new “improvement” project that involves narrowing Rockaway Beach Boulevard from Beach 88th Street to Beach
74th Street to just one lane. When they’re done we will be left with yet another conga line of traffic as now exists on the one-lane Beach Channel Drive and one-lane Shore Front Parkway. DOT should be proud that they are close to achieving their ultimate goal of total gridlock for motorists. Where is the outrage? On a positive note, kudos to Joe Mure and the many volunteers who put on an even bigger and better show for the benefit of Juvenile Diabetes research this year. Events like this remind me why it’s so great to live here, as long as you’re not in a car. Rick Horan

A Merry & Bright Holiday Season

The neighborhood is about to look a lot brighter and jolly. As we celebrate the holiday season, there will be several holiday lighting ceremonies taking place around town. Breezy Point will kick off the season with the 34th Annual Breezy Point Cooperative Christmas Tree Lighting on Friday, December 1, beginning at 6 p.m. Pointers will join at the Rockaway Point Commercial Area to light a 30-foot tree provided by
Shannon Florists. The event will include hot chocolate, cookies, snacks for everyone, and festive spiked beverages for the adults. Christmas is coming to Beach 116th Street on Saturday, December 2. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., join for the annual lighting of the Beach 116th Street Christmas tree, presented by the Beach 116th Street business owners and the Rockaway Civic Association. There will be caroling, hot chocolate, the blessing and lighting of the tree and a special visit by Santa Claus himself. The event will take place near the firehouse. Broad Channel will celebrate on Sunday, December 3, with their own Christmas Tree Lighting outside of the Broad Channel Athletic Club (125 Cross Bay Boulevard). The night kicks off at 5 p.m. and will feature performances by the PS 47 chorus, the Broad Channel Girl Scout Troop and Thomasina Dance Company. There will be treats and a visit from Santa as the clubhouse tree is lit for the season. Guests are encouraged to bring
an unwrapped toy for Debbie O’Connor's holiday gift drive for the Hematology/Oncology department at Cohen’s Medical Center and the Ronald McDonald House. On Monday, December 4, the Little North Pole will light up again for two special groups of kids. In the morning, about 500 children with autism will be visiting Joe Mure’s Neponsit home (144-03 Neponsit Avenue), and at night, members of the St. Camillus Special Olympics program will be treated to their own lighting starting at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, December 9, the Rockaway Beach Civic Association is hosting their tree lighting event in front of Peninsula Library (92-25 Rockaway Beach Boulevard). DJ Paddy Tubz will emcee the event, while Mrs. Elaine’s School of Dance and House on the Rock Church will perform. There will also be hot chocolate, goodies from Madelaine Chocolate Company and a visit from someone from the North Pole as the tree is lit. On Tuesday, December 12,
all are welcome to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah with the lighting of the Beach 116th Street menorah. Starting at 5:30 p.m., there will be cantor singing, hot chocolate and the blessing and lighting of the menorah near Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Some other local events won’t feature a lighting, but there will be a visit from the big man in red. On Friday, December 1, at 6 p.m., the 100th Precinct Community Council is hosting a movie night with Santa at St. Camillus (185 Beach 99th Street). Families will get to watch The Polar Express with Santa himself. Snacks will be on hand. Guests are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy as a donation. On Sunday, December 10, Rockaway WISH is inviting Santa for a special event at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club (533 Beach 126th Street). There will be opportunities for pictures with Santa, face-painting, and crafts and treats for the kids. Admission is free, but food items will be collected for a local food pantry.

In February, O’Connor, now age 13, was honored with the first-ever Caring Kids Award from NYMetro Parents, the parenting division of Davler Media Group. O’Connor’s winning entry was among seven that were selected from more than 100 submissions for volunteer and community service projects undertaken by children ages six to 15, in New York City, Rockland and Westchester counties, and Long Island. The 13-year-old’s story is even more inspiring as after being diagnosed with leukemia in 2010, she faced an extremely hard battle for survival, and was in treatment at Cohen Children's Hospital for more than two and a half years. Then according to O’Connor’s mom, Deborah O’Connor, in late 2012, when Anna was leaving the hospital to celebrate Christmas at home, she said that she felt sad about leaving her friends behind in the hospital. “Anna was concerned that her friends were still in the hospital and weren’t receiving any holiday gifts. So she came up with the idea that she would use her holiday money to buy
gifts for her friends,” O’Connor said. And now five years later, every year since Anna has been in remission from leukemia, she has not forgotten her friends, and steadfastly continues to run a toy drive in the community to donate presents for her friends. The amount of gifts they have received every year since then has grown. “The first year we collected 600 gifts, the second and third years, 700, and in 2016, we delivered over 950 gifts,” O’Connor said. However, this year, the O’Connors had a slight hiccup. Anna’s mom said, “On November 1, I created an event page on Facebook: ‘5th Annual Holiday Toy Drive Benefits Children Fighting Cancer,’ but was unaware that it was deleted. Long story short, the page is back up and donations are coming in. It’s ok because better late than never. Our focus is not on the amount of gifts we collect because even if we make a few children happy, that’s more than its weight in gold.” The O’Connors are not accepting monetary donations, only gifts for newborns to teens. As for Anna, she’s healthy, happy and already checking out high schools, as she will be graduating from eighth grade at St. Camillus in June. As for her career goals, Anna’s mom said, “Anna is a teenager, and you know they change their minds from one day to another. I’m just happy to see her and her sisters, Amanda and Alyssa happy, and not just focused on themselves. Together as a family, we are humbly working to making a difference and spreading happiness to other children and families, dealing with cancer and other illnesses. Being able to give and inspire the community to get involved is what makes the holidays so special for us as a family.” The O’Connors will be collecting gifts until December 16. the cake is that the TLC cable channel program, Cake Boss, has delivered on their promise to provide a cake for the Christmas Tree Lighting. Anna’s mom said last year, a producer from Cake Boss, contacted the family and pledged that as a thank you to Anna, her family and the community for their philanthropic efforts, the show will send a special cake for BC’s Christmas Tree Lighting. “Last Christmas, I contacted the Cake Boss producers, and they said due to timing, they would instead schedule the cake for this year. So I called recently to make sure they delivered on their promise, and I am happy to announce that we are driving out to Westbury, Long Island, to pick up a massive sheet cake from Carlo’s Bakery, a family-owned bakery, popularly featured on Cake Boss. The folks at Carlo’s said that the cake is huge and will definitely be enough to treat over 100 people. We are so grateful and excited,” O’Connor said.

December is Santa Paws Month! Originally started by Jason Rudd, in Long Beach, California, this campaign running from December 1 to 24, was designated by Rudd to gift animal shelters and their workers for the holidays. At The Rockaway Times (RT), we are giving Santa Paws Month an original Rockaway twist, by giving you the opportunity to nominate a local, who goes above and beyond the call of humanity to rescue and/ or find homes for our forlorn feline and canine friends left abandoned or lost on streets across the peninsula and Broad Channel. For example, take Rockaway Beach resident and animal aficionado, Eddy Pastore, who rescued an abandoned kitten, he lovingly named, Rusty. Pastore and his wife, Barbara, already caretakers of five cats and one dog of their own, found the kitten on the lawn in front of their home. The Pa-
stores saw that Rusty’s back leg was dragging, and immediately called Noah’s Ark Animal Rescue NY, located in Rockaway Park, to see what could be done. After being advised to bring the kitten to Rockaway Beach Veterinary Services, after x-rays, it was determined that the kitten’s leg had to be amputated at a cost of $1,000! The Pastores started a Facebook fundraiser to fund the surgery. The surgery was successful, but unfortunately two weeks later, Rusty developed an infection and had to go under the knife again. Pastore said, “Rusty came through, and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that the poor cat who has been through the mill, will live a long life.” The Pastores started another Facebook fundraiser to help pay for the kitten’s second surgery, which went well, and today, the Pastores are happy to report that Rusty is recuperating nicely and “is a trooper!” The red-haired kitten has officially
become a member of the Pastore’s animal-loving household. Do you know of another local, who judiciously rescues lost animals and tries to find their owner or maybe you know someone who babysits their neighbor’s pets for free, while they are at work or running errands? CARLOS LINARES, PIZZA MAKER AT BOARDWALK PIZZERIA By Frances Feuer
Have you ever wondered what people do all day at their jobs? I have, and that’s the basis for this column, Rockaway at Work. Monday is the only day that Carlos Linares makes pizza at Boardwalk Pizzeria and Restaurant. I came to see him in action; watching him take the round blob of dough and turn it into pizza. Before we started, I asked him where the dough comes from. The dough is made fresh on the premises every day. Fifty to sixty pounds of dough is made from yeast, flour, salt, sugar, and water. When it comes out of the mixer, it is cut into pieces, balled up, and set aside for 12 to 24 hours to rise. Linares took the dough, dipped it into flour, and then started the stretching and kneading process. That pizza dough was pushed and pulled and tossed and yanked. It was marvelous to see, especially since it would have landed on the floor if I had tried. “It looks easy, but you have to know the job,” Linares cautioned me. Don’t worry, Carlos, your job is safe…. No way I could ever do that. When he was done, it was the perfect size of the pizza peel, the wooden board with a handle used to put the pizza into the oven. Wow! Then he ladled out sauce onto the dough. The sauce used is dependent on the type of pizza being made. For example, their chicken marsala pie is made with a mushroom marsala wine sauce. It is Linares’ job to know what sauce to put on the different kinds of pizza. Then the cheese and the toppings. Again, that depends on the type of pizza ordered. The ‘grandma’ pizza is a thin crust pie, made with mozzarella cheese with a garlic and herb ‘San Marzano’ tomato sauce. It is Linares again who has to put the right toppings and cheese on each one. There are 20 different types of piz-
za that can be ordered, and I was impressed that he knows every topping and every sauce for each. Linares also has the responsibility of keeping watch as the 18-20 different kinds of slices on the counter get bought, so he can start fresh pies, and have them ready when needed. “When you go to a place, and you see everything is fresh, you go back,” says Linares. He makes pizza after pizza, keeping up with the demand. On a typical Monday, he makes 100 pizzas. Linares says, “I love making pizza, and cooking pizza.” Cooking pizza is Linares’ job the rest of the week. I came
back on a Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. to see him work the
ovens. The place was bustling, despite the early hour, with phone orders being called in and a steady stream of walk-in customers. He was one of five workers behind the counter, and it was his responsibility to watch everything baking in all four ovens, including the trays of fresh panino bread for sandwiches, homemade pita bread, and garlic knots. Linares stands by those ovens, checking every pizza, every tray of bread, every minute. As he takes out each pizza, he slices them, adds chopped parsley and other ingredients that are put on after cooking, and boxes them if they are going out. And then he checks the ovens again… At 8:30 p.m. or 9 p.m., Linares’ job is still not done. One counter worker takes care of the customers, while all of the other employees pitch in and do cleanup. Linares’ job is to clean the ovens… outside, inside, and the tops. When he finishes, he helps the others with the rest of the cleaning that has to be done…counters, walls, floors, tables, chairs, etc. Boardwalk Pizzeria and Restaurant is open seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday to Thursday, with closing at 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Carlos works those hours five days a week. That is a long, hard day, making pizza, or standing by a hot oven! Rockaway works hard.

Find THE Joy in THE Moment One morning recently this thought came to me from a very simple experience: find THE joy in THE moment. Why the “thes” are capitalized is because it is in pausing for THE moment is how to discover THE joy. When we’re hurriedly doing, communicating, exploring, seeking, there is no way we can feel an uplifting experience. During this Thanksgiving time, perhaps we think about for what we are grateful. It is
great to do so now, and, even greater to bring it to daily life. A few years ago, I began a practice of daily gratitude for the simple comforts in my life. My hot shower. My warm comfortable bed. My morning tea. Food that I cook. Down to thanking the chicken for my egg in the morning! This practice instills a sort of lightness, an uplifting energy to my day. And these moments of gratitude lead to finding THE joy in THE moment.

Also, I find being in a secluded space that is safe and comfortable fosters this kind of being. Like in the yoga room. When we move in the yoga room with awareness of body, empty mind and open heart, we can be light and joyful of the moments. And then this overwhelming feeling of gratitude follows. For you, maybe it is in another place, like your study or garden or wherever. The thought is to stop and think of the action of the moment and whatever it is that is contributing to your feeling good – right at that moment. I feel that we have to find any way to make our lives easier and more fulfilling. Before you know it, another year goes by. How can you feel differently and better with each passing year? Be focused and determined to live happily and fully. I understand that what we create as intentions really happen. Witness the athlete who focuses on the sport. Every muscle, bone, tendon, joint, etc. is poised to perform in a
certain way; the mind is tunneled to create a certain result; the heart is full of desire. Imagine taking the competition out of it and just being in this way to create a better life? What does a “better life” mean? Well, it means different things to different folks. And whatever is right for you is perfect. Because if we feel we are living a good life and are grateful on a daily basis, we are living the dream. Doesn’t matter what we have, what we don’t have, what we do, what we don’t do. It matters who we are as people and how we feel on a day-to-day basis. It matters that we are safe and secure in our homes and in the places we frequent. Joy in the moments. Life creates in every single day, a new day. An opportunity to build or rebuild, strengthen our foundations, enrich our relationships. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Hear This Our hearing ability decreases naturally over time. Prolonged exposure to loud noise often worsens hearing loss, especially high frequency hearing loss. Human speech recognition occurs in the mid to higher frequencies which is why those with high frequency hearing loss cannot hear conversations that occur in a crowded room. They cannot distinguish between the voice of the person speaking to them and the background noise. This can be especially frustrating for someone with high frequency hearing loss as all they can do is nod their head at conversations directed at them at a party be-
cause they cannot hear what is being said to them. Hearing aids can be very helpful to improve hearing loss but must be prescribed by a professional and can be quite expensive. The mean cost for two hearing aids is $4700, which is not covered by Medicare. Nationally representative estimates are that only 20 percent of adults with hearing loss report using hearing aids. But there are less expensive alternatives to hearing aids – personal sound amplification products or PSAPs. PSAPs are over the counter products not specifically labeled for hearing loss treatment, but some are technologi-

Although this was a small study it was the first one to compare PSAPs to a hearing aid. The authors note that had the users been able to self-program the PSAPs, as can be done with these devices, the improvement in speech recognition might have been even greater. The results of this study lend support to current national initiatives from the National Academies, the White House, and bipartisan legislation requesting that the FDA create a new regulatory classification for hearing devices meeting the appropriate specifications to be available over the counter. (This article was written several months ago. Since then, Congress passed this law and the and President Trump signed it). They compared the Oticon Nera 2 hearing aid ($1910) to 5 PSAPs – Sound World Solutions C550+ ($349), Soundhawk ($349), Etymotic BEAN ($299), Tweak Focus ($269), and MSA 30X Sound Amplifier ($29.99). Study volunteers repeated sentences in the presence of background noise under 7 conditions: unaided, with the hearing aid, and with the 5 PSAPs. The testing was conducted by an audiologist using a sound booth. The sentences were presented via a speaker directly in front of the participant with another speaker creating background noise directly behind the participant. The change in accuracy in speech understanding varied by device. The hearing aid improved speech understanding by 12 percent while the Sound World Solutions C550+ improved it by 11 percent and the Soundhawk

Not So ‘Smart’ Thermostats By Adam Magniccari The “Nest Learning Thermostat” came out in 2011, and since then, many companies have tried to duplicate the technology. Honeywell and Ecobee have come out with models that are both just as good if not better than the original “Nest,” and I believe that the nest has gone through three models since its inception. The purpose of this technology was to automatically learn a family’s behavior when it came to controlling the heating and cooling aspects of their homes. Now, let me tell you something. I’m 35 and about as tech savvy as your average 90-yearold. I’m lucky I can write this article on a laptop and actu-
ally email it to where it needs to go. I can’t stand technology, and these thermostats are no exception. Like all technology, they have their purpose and they do work under certain circumstances. If they are properly installed, they are very reliable, or should I say as reliable as everything else that runs on Wi-Fi capability. What I don’t like about these thermostats is that the companies that design them are much better at marketing this technology to the public than they are at educating the buyer on how to properly install it based on what boiler and system they actually have. Most early commercials regarding the installation of the Nest thermostat touted it as a “do it yourself” installation, regardless of

the heating system you owned. After hooking up a couple of wires, the thermostat was supposed to work without problems and many of them did. What isn’t well known is how many problems homeowners had with these thermostats. Sometimes the heat would not work at all. Other times the heating system would turn itself on during the dog days of summer. I’ve personally seen a number of times in which the wiring shorted out the transformer at the boiler. I’m not saying they’re all bad. Technology, when it works, is a wonderful thing. Here is what to look for before buying that smart thermostat this holiday season. First off, download the installation instructions before buying your thermostat. Read them thoroughly. If the thermostat in question requires a common or “c” wire, make sure that you have one. Most thermostat wires in older homes have only two wires, a red and a white. This means that you don’t have a common. Look
The Rockaway Times for a thermostat that does not need this third wire. It’s a lot easier compromising which thermostat to buy instead of creating an extra electrical job. Every brand of thermostat can be synced to your phone and usually have very similar features. Do not deviate from the manufacturer's instructions. Second, when installing your thermostat make sure the boiler switch is off. If you forget this step, there is a good chance you’ll fry your low voltage transformer during installation. Again, this is supposed to be “home improvement,” not home destruction. Follow the steps for installation carefully and make sure all the connections are clean and tight. Turn the boiler switch back on once you are completely finished. Make sure you program the proper day and time initially. West African Chef Finds Home At Community House

It’s early morning at the Community House on Rockaway Beach Boulevard, and the soft vocals of Bob Marley are playing in the kitchen. “When I am cooking and listening to music it puts me in a happy mood,” says Head Chef Omar Sow, 37, also known as “Moose.” In the morning, he starts prepping the kitchen for the day ahead of him. Community House, once known as the Irish Circle, has become a favored restaurant of the Rockaways. “This is our neighborhood spot,” says local resident, Brenda Schilling. “I come every Wednesday. The lunch menu is my favorite and absolutely delicious.” Since Chef Moose started working there over a year ago, he has enhanced existing dishes and also added new ones. “The quality of the food is incredible and consistent. Orders, no matter how big, come out in less than 15 minutes,” says owner Kelley Brooke. “When we first opened with another chef, we had organizational problems. We couldn’t get food out in a timely manner and had consistency issues. Since Moose has joined us, the kitchen runs like a finely-tuned instrument,” she added. All the way from Senegal, West Africa, Chef traveled here 18 years ago to pursue a better life for him and his family back home. Coming to New York only knowing his cousin, he wasn’t sure what he would end up doing. Back in Sourou, his village in Senegal, where he built his very own house, Moose owns a farm where he has a variety of ani-
mals and crops. Being a farmer, he always had familiarity with different cuts of meat and vegetables, but he never cooked. “Being raised in Senegal, the men do not cook, so it seems strange to them that I am a chef now,” says Moose. Throughout the year he goes back to his village to visit his three sons, Tidjane, Boubacar and Daouda, ages 21,19 and 5, and other family members. “I told my children one night that I was going to cook them dinner and they laughed,” he said with a smile on his face, “but they loved it and raved about it to their grandmother.” Moose did not start out as a chef, but he always had an interest in it. “As a child I would watch my mom cook and think to myself I want to learn,” he said. When he first arrived in the Bronx, New York, he started as a gas station attendant and also a dishwasher at a Ruth’s Chris Steak House. Working in the restaurant industry helped open the door to his cooking career. “I would always watch the chefs cook and learned by watching them,” said Chef Moose. He eventually worked his way up to line cook and then moved on to be a chef at The Capital Grille, Morton's The Steakhouse and NYY Steak. Hard work is second nature to him. Throughout that time he was always working a second job, whether it was working at the gas station or being a server at TGI Fridays. Eventually, one of his fellow co-workers told him about a job at Randall's Island, where he met Kelley Brooke. From then on he was a chef at the restaurant at Randall’s Island
Golf and Entertainment until he accepted the offer of Head Chef position at Community House. “I live out in the Bronx, so it was a big decision for me to come to Rockaway, but I was happy to do it for Kelley,” says Chef. In the past year, Community House has blossomed even more with new items that are getting exceptional reviews by customers. Alaina Dochylo, server at Community House, says, “I have guests compliment the Chef and food all the time, such as the lobster bisque
and I pray.” Sometimes before work, Chef will go to the Mosque near Beach 54th street to start off his day with prayer. “Praying uplifts me and motivates my day,” he adds. With his impressive cooking skills, making time for his family and faith, Moose also managed to learn eight languages throughout his life. He knows English, French, Spanish and five African languages: Fulani, Wolof, Mandinka, Soninke, and Bambara. He says, “Knowing these languages always comes

and Maureen’s shepherds pie. It’s rare that I get an answer other than ‘Delicious’ when asking the table how their order is.” With reasonable prices and good quality, more and more guests come every day. “The presentation of the food makes me feel like I am at a million-dollar restaurant, and on top of that you are blessed with the food being excellent,” says regular Joseph Stanzalone. With working hard and improving the kitchen, Chef still makes time for his faith and prays every day. “Religion is very important to me. I was raised Muslim and pray five times a day,” says Moose. “Whenever I can get a quick break from the kitchen, I go
in handy for when I am back home in Africa, but also here in the restaurant when we have guests that speak Spanish or French for instance.” Head Chef Moose hopes to show his children his work one day soon. “ My sons have an upcoming interview for citizenship. I can not wait until they are here in New York with me. It can not come soon enough!” he said with excitement. In the near future Chef would like to continue his legacy and hopes to own his own restaurant. “I would like to own a family restaurant one day with my kids and cook African and American dishes,” he says with a grin as he continues prepping the beef patties for the day.

RWA VISITS HANDEL ARCHITECTS By Program Assistant Daniel Borrero
On November 7, a group of students in the Shore Corps Program at Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA) took a trip to visit Handel Architects, an architecture, interior design, and planning firm founded in New York City in 1994. This trip was organized at the courtesy of Michael Arad, one of the lead architects at the firm, who led a similar tour with an RWA group back in 2012. The high-school students in the program are learning about urban planning and architecture in New York City. With Program Assistant Daniel Borrero, the teens have explored urban planning and architectural history from ancient times through the modern era, and have explored a variety of urban planning projects currently taking shape in New York City. These included, for example, Mayor de Blasio’s Zoning for Quality and Affordability and Mandatory Inclusionary Housing initiatives, PlaNYC, Vision 42, and, close to home, the Far Rockaway Rezoning Plan. In small groups, the students researched these various initiatives, and discussed the effects they would have on neighborhoods. The visit to Handel Architects bolstered the students’ urban planning knowledge. Arad is the designer of the National September 11 Memorial at the World Trade Center. Before taking the group on a tour of the site, Arad explained his vision for the memorial: “It was very important to me that the Memorial be free and easily accessible to the public. I wanted it to feel like a public park. I remember after the attacks when I visited Washington Square Park at night, that a group of strangers had gathered around the fountain in

solidarity and prayer. That is what New York City is about, the possibility for people to gather in public places to express their emotions and show their strength. I wanted my design to reflect that.” Upon visiting the site, the students were able to see what he meant. The 9/11 Memorial is accessible from all sides for free. The students expressed their wonder at being able to visit such a proclaimed place in a way that felt natural. “We entered right from the street… I almost didn’t realize we were here!” expressed Farmata Dia, a student from Scholars’ Academy. That experience built on the ideas the students had discussed in class, such as the preservation of public space for community members and methods of integrating public projects with the surrounding streetscape. Back at the office, the group was treated to a light lunch and a tour of the office. Some highlights included a discussion concerning the plans for a new high rise building in Long Island City, a sneak peek into the intricate 3D modeling computer work, and, everyone’s favorite, the 3D printing machines for physical models. At the end of the day, the group took a quick look around the Oculus transportation hub before heading back to Rockaway with new ideas in mind. RWA would like to give a special thank you to Handel Architects, especially Michael Arad and Volunteer Group Coordinator Maria Mercedes, for making this trip possible.

No disrespect to the parents who try, but I refuse to be cajoled into thinking, “I should do the same because I don’t want my daughter to miss out.” I know what my daughter can take, and I refuse to force her into an environment that may seem threatening. I’d rather take her locally to the Beach 116th Street Christmas Tree Lighting that is happening this Saturday, December 2 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., where she will be surrounded by her mom, her dad, always-fateful nana and great-grandmum, and the community she knows. Numero dos — Holiday photos. After two years in succession, paying a crap load of money for professional photos to be done, in competition with those ever-organized and not to mention, early bird parents, who have their holiday photo greeting cards in the mail before Thanksgiving, I gave up. First of all, I’d rather do it at home in

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year?” Hmmm…, for many of us with loved ones on the autism spectrum, “wonderful” could be interchanged with “harrowing,” but it doesn’t have to be so, and here’s four ways how: Now before I begin, I will confess, I’m not an expert. I have just learned to roll with the tide and each wave with my nine-year-old nonverbal daughter with autism. Numero uno — Forget the competitive, self-imposed daring you see on social media. You see Facebook posts with parents who took their children to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade or photos with Santa at the mall. Listen, I know my daughter, and there is no way in hell that I am going to take her to a place, where I have to be afraid that she is going to start shrieking because of the crowds, loud
front of the tree with my daughter dolled-up, giggling, as I make monkey faces to get her to smile and by some miracle, get a picture-perfect photo. So what if I don’t send them out until New Year’s Eve? The important thing is that my beautiful daughter is immortalized forever. (Though I must admit that our family across the pond in England and Italy and even further in Madagascar, complain that they always receive the card in late January!). Ahhh…so what if I am a bit tardy. Doesn’t she look adorable anyway? Numero tres — Gifts! My family drives me crazy with the assault of questions about what is the perfect gift they can buy. Two years ago, my dad bought this gigantic football (soccer ball) that after being blown up, couldn’t fit in the car. Maybe some of you saw me rolling this gigantic ball from the Mobil gas station on Beach Channel Drive. Supposedly the ball is good for

children (and horses?) with sensory needs. However, after taking her to the beach a few times to roll on the ball, I gave up, and now, it is taking up a huge space in the garage. Well, after my crafty daughter learned how to deflate it, the donut is now well-packed under the bed. My advice? Just buy what you think your children would have fun tinkering with, even it is just a ball of yarn. And finally, numero quatro: Family gatherings. So, the grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins get together to share a meal and gifts, all in the spirit of celebrating the holiday. That’s great! However, my experience has taught me to not pressure your special child to engage. My daughter prefers to run around the house, play in her room, and pop out when she feels like it. Our special loved ones are more independent than we think, and are wise enough to not buckle under the pressure to be social. Some family members may intervene and say, “Where is (name), bring him/her out so I can give her a kiss” or “I want to take a family photo.” Take it easy folks and be brave. Just say, “Give (name) a chance. The day is not over yet!” Just keep in mind that the magic of the holidays — is not in the grandiose number of holiday events and activities you attend with your loved ones with autism, nor picture-perfect hol-

Do You Know Your Tides? Sure, we all think we know how tides work, the gravitational pull of the moon and its cycle around the earth, how our home break works best on what tide and swell combination. But here’s something cool to know, there are more than 400 astronomical cycles that influence the tide. A great new book called "Tides: The Science and Spirit of the Ocean," by author and surfer Jonathan White, goes into great depth about all the variables associated with tides, tidal bores and inland water ways. It wasn’t until he got stuck by a 14-foot tide in Alaska on a mud flat that he realized he didn’t know enough about tides, and that experience set him forth to investigate. "I thought I'd find my answer in a book or two," he writes, "but the more I
read, the more complex and mysterious and poetic the subject became." SurfersVillage.com released some great facts gathered from the book: There is a very long wave that travels around the world at 450 miles per hour. It has no beginning and no end. The 12-hour gradual rise and fall we see on the beach is the wave’s passing, first its crest and then its trough. There is about three terawatts of power in the ocean’s tides — three times the world’s daily energy consumption. The world’s largest tidal bore – sometimes 25 feet tall – is on the Qiantang River in China. The Silver Dragon has been racing up the Qiantang on every tide, every day, for 2,500 years. Tide charts repeat themselves every 18.6 years. Tides create friction — lots of it — by rubbing against the ocean floor. Some of this
is dissipated as heat, just like when you rub your hands together. But most of it is transferred into energy that acts as a brake on the earth’s rotation. By a very small amount per day, the earth is turning slower and the days are growing longer, because of the tide. In the 13th century, Leonardo da Vinci believed the tides were caused by the breathing of a giant beast and tried to calculate the size of its lung. The book that got Galileo in trouble with the Catholic Church was originally titled: The Flux and Reflux of the Sea. Galileo used the sloshing of the ocean tides as proof that the earth moved, and therefore was not the center of the universe. His tide theory, by the way, was completely wrong, but because of it, he was sentenced to house arrest until the end of his days. One hundred and sixty billion cubic meters of water
rush in and out of the Bay of Fundy, between the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, during an average 12-hour tide cycle. That’s four times the outflow from all the world’s rivers in the same amount of time. This might be a little farfetched, but they also write: “When the waters of the Red Sea parted to allow Moses and the children of Israel to escape Egypt, it may have been a tidal event, timed perfectly by Moses, who lived near the Red Sea and knew that on an extreme spring tide, there would be a dry passage across. He may, in fact, have timed his exodus precisely so that the Children of Israel would make it across, but the tide would rush back in while Pharaoh and his pursuing army were only half way across. Pharaoh, who lived on the tideless Nile, would not have been familiar with the Red Sea tides.”
