The 2021 Winners List

By Katie McFadden

The results are in. After a big election for New York City, the results are certain in many races and for five important state proposals. Here’s a rundown of results according to the NYC Board of Elections as of Wednesday, November 3. Eric Adams will be New York City’s next mayor. As we go to press, the democrat earned 66.14% of the vote (676,481) to Republican Curtis Sliwa’s 28.66% (293,127). Socialist Catherine Rojas earned 2.44%

and Conservative Bill Pepitone had 1.14%. While this was a big race for New York City, voter turnout was again low, for a city of more than five million registered voters. But it was on par with the turnout for 2017. As we go to press, with 97.76% scanners reported, 1,022,802 people voted for mayor, but this number will increase as absentee ballots are counted. In the 2017 mayoral race, 1,166,314 voted were cast. The City Council races were the talk of the town for Rockaway. One of the most contested City Council races in the borough was the District 32 race for Eric Ulrich’s seat between Republican Joann Ariola and Democrat Felicia Singh. In this race that was expected to be so close that Ariola had writ-

ten a concession speech just in case, Ariola was the overwhelming winner with 67.48% of the vote (16,040) over Singh’s 31.31% (7,443). She received more votes than Eric Ulrich did in 2017 (15,530) over his win against Mike Scala (8,037). Ariola ripped up the concession speech before accepting her win at Russo’s on Tuesday night. On her victory, we reached out to Ariola for comment but did not receive a response by press time. Ariola took to social media to share, “Thank you all for all your support! This is a win for our entire community. I dedicate this victory to the memories of my father, Paul Ariola, and my dear friend Scott Jordan.” In District 31, Democrat Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers blew it out of the water with 90.27% (15,518) of the vote over Republican Vanessa Pollie Simon’s 9.63% (1,655). Of her third victory this year, Brooks-Powers said, “It’s a tremendous privilege

to serve my community and work every day to build a better future for our city. This win is a culmination of months of hard work, three elections, and countless hours spent talking with Southeast Queens residents about their struggles and their hopes for our community. Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote -- whether this was your first time voting this year or your third. Thank you to everyone who has supported me over the last year and beyond -- this win would not have been possible without your encouragement, advice, and time.” In the race for Public Advocate, Jumaane Williams won re-election with 67.62% of the vote (668,385) over Republican Dr. Devi Elizabeth Nampiaparampil with 24.07% of the vote (237,910) and Conservative Anthony L. Herbert with 6.85% (67,669). For City Comptroller, Democrat Brad Lander took the Continued on page 3

THE 2021 WINNERS LIST Continued from Page 2 win with 68.65% (674,229) over Republican Daby Benjamine Carreras’s 23.76% (233,328) and Conservative Paul A. Rodriguez’s 5.63%. In Queens, for the Borough President race, BP Donovan Richards held on to his seat with 65.72% of the vote (160,081) over Republican Thomas J. Zmich’s 34.09% (83,051). For Justice of the Supreme Court 11th District, the six Democrat candidates won: Denis J. Butler (18.51%), David J. Kirschner (16.57%), Kenneth C. Holder (16.01%), Laurentina S. McKetney Butler (12.64%), Michele R. Titus (12.51%) and Karen Gopee (11.48%). For Civil Court County Queens, the two Democrats, Soma S. Syed (37.86%) and Andrea S. Ogle (37.07%) won. There were also five vital state proposals on the ballot this year. While New York City voted Yes to all five, the state said otherwise to Proposals 1, 3

Page 3

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2021 and 4 regarding voting changes, so they are unlikely to pass. Proposal 2 and 5 are likely to pass. On Proposal 1 (Amending the Apportionment and Redistricting Process), New York voted 48.52% No (1,517,296) to 38.43% Yes (1,201,555). On Proposal 2 (Right to Clean Air, Clean Water, and a Healthful Environment), 60.82% (1,903,627) voted Yes and 27.45% voted No (859,002). On Proposal 3 (Eliminating Ten-Day-Advance Voter Registration Requirement), 51.34% voted No (1,606,939) and 37.67% voted Yes (1,179,169). On Proposal 4 (Authorizing No-Excuse Absentee Ballot Voting), 50.09% voted No (1,567,670) and 38.60% voted Yes (1,208,149). On Proposal 5 (Increasing the Jurisdiction of the New York City Civil Court), 53.54% voted Yes (1,675,009) and 31.62% voted No (989,343). Please note that these are all preliminary results. All of these numbers are expected to change slightly as the rest of the scanners are counted and absentee ballots are added.

The Show Will Go On! Twenty months after the curtains closed, the spotlights are coming back on at the Rockaway Theatre Company. Rockaway’s beloved local theater, that brings Broadway-style shows right to the peninsula, is back! They’re ready to put on their first performance next week and as a treat to the community and their supporters, the shows will be free. Back in March 2020, just as the RTC was getting ready to premiere “Jesus Christ Superstar,” the pandemic stopped everything in its tracks. This September, Broadway lit up again as restrictions lifted and now the Rockaway Theatre Company is ready to shine. Starting November 12, the RTC will be bringing a production of Music Theatre International’s “All Together Now!: A Global Event Celebrating Local Theatre” to the Post Theatre in Fort Tilden. RTC says, “A fantastic selec-

tion of songs are featured in this brand new musical revue from shows including Rent, Les Misérables, Into the Woods, Matilda, Hairspray, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Fiddler on the Roof, Once on This Island, Little Shop of Horrors, Mamma Mia! and many more!” There will be five free performances on November 12, 13 and 15 at 8 p.m. and November 14 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. While the show is free, all seats must be reserved and can be done so on the RTC website: www.rockawaytheatrecompany.org/ Please note that the RTC is observing all National Park Service Covid restrictions. This includes vaccinations. No one will be admitted without proof of vaccination and ID. A mask must be worn at all times in the theater. Due to this, it is advised those with reservations arrive at least 20 minutes early so the staff can check these items.

This is Halloween Halloween was back in full swing this past weekend! The community offered several ways to celebrate all weekend and residents took advantage of all of the fun! Here are just a few photos from the festivities. The 100th Precinct’s Trunk or Treat on Friday brought

costumed kids from all over the peninsula to check out the NYPD’s decked out cars, meet their K9 and horses and receive some candy. Some even dressed for the theme, as aspiring police officers. On Sunday morning, The Rockaway Hotel offered a fabulous drag brunch hosted by Rockaway’s Queen of Queens, Ginger Ladd. It was an afternoon full of high-energy performances and fabulous prizes for those who also chose to show up in costume. But Halloween is all about the trick-or-treating. Costumed kids were out an about on the beautiful Sunday afternoon and even St. Francis de Sales’ priests got in on the fun. While Fr. Jim and Fr. Bill went for a healthy look, they did have candy to give out to the parishioners who stopped by the rectory.

October 100th Precinct Council Meeting Recap By Katie McFadden

The latest 100th Precinct Community Council meeting provided advisories, updates and crime stats within the precinct. The meeting was held virtually on Zoom on Wednesday, October 27. It began with a few updates with community leaders and representatives. Robby Schwach of Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office let the group know about free Covid testing available at Ulrich’s office (114-12 Beach Channel Drive) on Tuesdays in November from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dan Brown of the Queens District Attorney’s office let everyone know about the DA’s Veterans Day ceremony, which will be held on November 10. The office will also be holding a gun buyback program on November 6 in Jackson Heights, offering $200 gift cards for any operational gun. More info can be found about both events at QueensDA.org. Council president Kathy Heavey congratulated Carlos Fabara on his recent promotion

from captain to deputy inspector. She advised the group about the Youth Coordination Officer’s upcoming event of Trunk or Treat on October 29. She also said the Council will be holding their annual Thanksgiving Food Drive on Saturday, November 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Rockaway Park Stop and Shop. Everyone is encouraged to donate nonperishable goods to benefit local food pantries.

Ahead of Halloween, Community Crime Prevention Officer Jason Farrell was on hand to provide some Halloween safety tips. He also provided some information about crimes regarding an uptick in vehicles being broken into and vehicles stolen. “Please minimize whatever you keep in your vehicles as much as possible,” Officer Farrell said, especially things like electronics, laptops, tablets, phones and wallets. He

said often these crimes are attributed to people leaving their doors open or keys in the vehicle, so he reminded people to be mindful of these things. Lt. Rosario of Transit District 23 advised people to be mindful of seemingly innocent things that are leading to crimes. He said at big events, people will come up to others and say they lost their child who has their phone and ask to borrow phones. “The minute you give them that phone, they’re gone,” he said. He also said some will ask what time it is and while people look at their watch, they are hit, and the person will steal from their pockets. He also said when people might ask for change of a bill and they see money in your wallet, they’ll snatch your wallet. Regarding specific transit crimes, Lt. Rosario said there were two robberies last month on Beach 67th Street during the late night/early morning hours. Continued on page 7

OCTOBER 100TH PRECINCT COUNCIL MEETING RECAP Continued from Page 6 He said they’ve been patrolling this area more in response. He also said the Transit District is doing what it can to address issues regarding homeless and drunks that are causing disturbances on Beach 116th Street. “We’ve been working with the 100th Precinct together to keep these people moving along or get them help if they need it. Sometimes they don’t want it and we’ve been dealing with this consistently,” he said. Heavey said local business owners have thanked them after seeing an improvement. Relating to this, questions were asked about the bench by the bus stop on Beach 116th and asked if it would be helpful to remove it, as it has become a gathering point for vagrants. Dolores Orr of Community Board 14 says she will request that the DOT remove it if possible. Some pointed out that many of these people that gather are from nearby adult homes and asked if the State Department can get involved to hold these facilities accountable. Rosario said they can confront them, but they often are told that once those people leave the facility, what happens on the street is the NYPD’s problem. Capt. Jean Beauvoir, the Executive Officer at the 100th Precinct added that it’s hard on them because their homeless unit was disbanded and there isn’t much they can do other than tell these people to move along. A representative from Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato’s office said the assemblywoman plans to have a meeting with some of these adult facilities soon. Captain Beauvoir then provided crime updates from the 28-day period. “We have no murders, one rape, one robbery, eight felony assaults, five burglaries, ten grand larcenies and six grand larceny autos,” he said. Regarding car break ins, the captain reiterated that people need to stop leaving doors open and keys inside cars. In two of the felony assault cases, there were nonfatal shootings. One person was apprehended while the other is known but has not been apprehended yet. Most of the other assaults are domestic incidents.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2021

Page 7

Regarding the burglaries, some had to do with people going inside gated properties and stealing construction materials and in one instance, someone broke into someone’s home. That individual was arrested. The captain was asked about a school fight that day near the Beach Channel campus. The captain said the usual officer on site near the school was away on training that day. In other school incidents, a principal brought up an issue of people riding mopeds, motorcycles and other vehicles around the school yards after school in Arverne. The captain said they will deploy officers to the area around the mentioned times to try to address the issue. Asked about a hit-and-run incident on Beach Channel Drive and Beach 116th in October, the captain said the man who hit the young woman did wind up coming back and surrendered himself with an attorney. Community Affairs Office Victor Boamah was on hand to provide updates on concerns brought up at the previous Council meeting. Regarding an issue of double parking and other traffic violations on Beach 122nd Street, Boamah said he met with the man who made the complaints and these issues have been resolved. Regarding panhandling concerns at Stop and Shop, Boamah said he and other officers have visited the site and have spoken to the manager and these issues are being closely monitored. Regarding a complaint of drag racing on Beach 126th Street, Boamah said he met with the woman who made the complaint and found that this situation has decreased. Regarding the new issue of the motorized vehicles wreaking havoc at the school in Avrerne, Boamah said he will personally meet with the principal and will try to address this by the next meeting. Lastly, District 31 Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers was on hand to provide some updates. She told the group that she is expected to open her Rockaway office at 1931 Mott Avenue before the end of the year. Due to Thanksgiving, the next Community Council meeting will be held Wednesday, November 17 at 7 pm. on Zoom. To advertise in THE ROCKAWAY TIMES call 718-634-3030

***** Congratulations to Joann Ariola and Eric Adams. Ariola won the 32nd District City Council race in decisive fashion as did Adams in the mayoral race. The City Council race was expected to be a squeaker, but Ariola won big, taking 68% of the vote to Singh’s 31%. Social media can be noisy. It’s instructive to recall what Adams said when he won the primary: he said he cared about social security not social media. (Which reminds us, both winning candidates advertised big in The Rockaway Times!) ***** Congratulations to Selvena Brooks-Powers who kept her Council seat and Donovan Richards who keeps his Borough President title. *****

Shhh….hear that silence? The robocalls have stopped. Enjoy it while you can. Many candidates will barely be able to take a break from campaigning. Redistricting will trigger new races in a couple of years. ***** Clocks go back this Sunday at 2 a.m. We don’t like it. And what’s with this two in the morning thing? Oh, and for those who say summer’s over on the 4th of July, when is winter over? ***** On Friday, November 5, The Rockaway Film Festival is showing “Nest” a film starring Oona Roche who grew up in Rockaway. It starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Arverne Cinema, 72-10 Gouverneur Avenue. Admission is $10. ***** Best of luck to all the Rockaway runners as they tackle the New York Marathon Sunday. ***** Starting today, November 4, HBO Max will be streaming The Not-Too-Late with Elmo talk show starring 11-year-old

Cailyn Hanna and featuring her grandfather, Owen Loof, known to many as The Best Dressed Man in Rockaway. ***** The recent Oktoberfest fundraiser at St. Francis de Sales was quite the success. The 50/50 raffle winner won $98,500. The lucky ticket was sold by Father Jim Cunningham who might have been wearing a lucky Rockaway Times t-shirt at the time. ***** City Council candidate Felicia Singh scored a Chuck Schumer endorsement and announced that he’d appear with her on the boardwalk last Sunday. When a group of Ariola supporters showed and at least one shouted threats, the campaign stop was cancelled. Later, Schumer and Singh filmed a promotional spot on Beach 125th Street and the Boulevard. ***** The U.S. Army Corps has opened their bids on the massive phase 2 contract for the beach protection pro-

ject, to include a new armored reinforced dune, sand replenishment, walkovers, etc. The lowest bid, of $232,856,498.56, was submitted by Michels Corp., the contractor that replaced the Mill Basin drawbridge in Brooklyn a few years ago. The next closest bid, almost ten million dollars higher, was submitted by H & L Contracting, the company that is currently building the groins on our beaches. The Army Corps had set an estimate of $265 million dollars. ***** Trailers will be at Joe Mure’s house, Beach 144th and Neponsit Avenue this Saturday at 9 a.m. Why trailers? Because there’s a lot of stuff needed to put together the Little North Pole. Helpers will be needed this Saturday and on other weekends up until the day Santa shows and the lights go on, Saturday, December 4. ***** One year ago, restaurants were restricted to 25% capacity.

FOOD DRIVE On Saturday, November 13th ‘The Graybeards’ in partnership with ‘The RIBS’ are sponsoring a FOOD DRIVE to help stock the various food pantries throughout the Rockaways. Blue collection bags are being distributed throughout the neighborhood this weekend. If you do not receive a blue bag in your mailbox you can put your donations in any plastic bag. Collection of the food will be next Saturday, November 13th. Just leave your donation outside your front door before 9AM next Saturday and someone will be by to pick it up. If for some reason your donation does not get picked up next Saturday you can drop it off at St. Francis de Sales Rectory 129-16 Rockaway Beach Blvd.

Halloweentown

Is Halloween the new Christmas? Rockaway and Broad Channel are stepping up their Halloween decoration game. There were so many great dis-

plays this year that it even inspired a contest. Re/Max Elite had the great idea of launching a Halloween decoration contest this year. We don’t know if it inspired folks to step up their decorating game, or if folks just wanted to get into the spirit after Halloween was a dud last year due to the pandemic, but there was plenty of competition. The Gatz’s spooky, interactive display featuring towering skeletons on Beach 139th Street won the Re/ Max contest after receiving the most “Likes” on social media. However, there were some other great ones. The Anaya’s display on Newport Avenue is always one to impress. A house on the beach block of 125th added a Squid Games touch to its scary clown display. And Broad Channel put out all the stops with multiple homes decorated from floor to roof. Way to get into the spirit! Photos by Katie McFadden and Dan Guarino.

For Shame Dear Editor: (From Rachel Charkey: I'm sending this letter on behalf of my father, Morton Charkey, because he does not have email. He is incredibly upset about the number of members of our community that are refusing the vaccine and penned the following letter to express his feelings.) As of today, more than 700,000 Americans have lost their lives in a war against an unseen and vicious enemy. More than the total casualties of American lives in WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam combined. Imagine if on D-Day June 6,

1944, 25% of the infantry had decided it was against their personal privilege and laid down their weapons. Or if our proud marines in the pacific said ‘I’m not storming the beaches because it might be dangerous.’ How would we have felt if 25% of our 8th and 9th Air Force called in sick rather than go on bombing missions over Germany? Or if 25% of our naval heroes decided to retire rather than take their ships into dangerous enemy waters. We would have condemned their hubris for personal freedom. What is happening now is a stain on American history due to an unwillingness to sacrifice personal freedom in desperate times, and as a Korean veteran who volunteered to serve my country, I’m ashamed by the lack of courage I’m witnessing by many Americans who are hiding behind fake patriotism and political arrogance. Morton Charkey

Bugalou Is Back: November 26 Kicks off New Series

After yet another false start, Bugalou will finally return to present outstanding national and regional musical artists in Rockaway when Steve Forbert and the New Renditions headline the Super Songwriter Showcase at St. Camillus Springman Hall on Friday, November 26. After a great night with The THE BAND Band, and Real Young and Lazy Horse on February 28, 2020, a succession of shows have been scheduled and postponed due to COVID-19, most recently on October 1 when Real Young was scheduled along with Toronto's Virgil Kinsley. Although live musical performances had returned to NYC, a restriction on large events and gatherings in parish facilities in the Diocese of Brooklyn had been imposed, resulting in the postponement of the show. That restriction has now been lifted and everyone is excited that Bugalou will once again take the stage. Steve Forbert is a true American musical treasure. Arriving from Meridian, MS, he quickly gained notoriety busking in Grand Central Station and other NYC locations before cutting his debut album “Alive on Arrival,” for Epic Records, in 1977. The album gained critical acclaim from Rolling Stone, the Village Voice and many other publications and

sold respectably, with Steve moving up to the club and theater circuit that Bruce Springsteen was just exiting as he rose to prominence. His next album, “Jackrabbit Slim,” included the hit song, “Romeo's Tune.” Forbert was being hailed as the new Bob Dylan, but he appeared to be following a trajectory similar to Springsteen. He continued to write, record, and perform prolifically, but never took that next step to mass popularity. He continues to be a mainstay on the national stages at venues such as City Winery and Daryl's House, and it will be a pleasure to finally have him here at Springman Hall. Rockaway legend Gerald Bair will begin the night with a set of his own compositions that have become ingrained in the musical memories of his loyal Rockaway audience. Tickets to the show are $40 and are on sale at www.bugaloumusic.com, but you may want to consider purchasing either a three-Show Package for $100, or a Full Season Pass for all five shows for $150. The rest of the schedule for Bugalou includes Jingo-The Santana Tribute on February 18. Winston McBoogie opens. Desert Highway-A Tribute to The Eagles on April 22 with Fools Night Out finally hitting the Bugalou stage. Finnegan Blue heads the Welcome to Summer Party on July 1, with Two Degrees making their return to Rockaway from Ireland, and a new date will soon be set for Real Young and Lazy Horse. Please email bugaloumusic@ gmail.com to purchase the Season Pass or 3 Show Package, as well as for more information. To advertise in THE ROCKAWAY TIMES call 718-634-3030

Running For the Big Guy By Katie McFadden

On Sunday, November 7, more than 30,000 runners will take to the streets of New York City to participate in the 50th running of the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon. Among them will be several Rockaway locals. One Belle Harbor resident, Lauren Marten, will be running in the steps of her father, Raymond Marten, a sixtime marathon runner, who is now in a marathon-battle against a new course—brain cancer. In June 2020, Raymond Marten was put on the sidelines after suffering a seizure. A few weeks later, the Marten family learned the devastating reason for why it happened. In August 2020, Raymond Marten was diagnosed with glioblastoma (GBM), an aggressive type of brain cancer. But it was in that moment, Raymond decided he wasn’t going to let GBM win. “He’s so positive about the whole thing,” Raymond’s daughter, Lauren Marten said. “I’ve never heard him talk negatively about it. Every time, he says ‘I’m just going to keep fighting.’” That fighting spirit of her father has been an inspiration to his family, including Lauren. Over the past year, the family has watched Raymond take GBM head on. As a lifelong athlete, who was even inducted into the Iona College Rugby Hall of Fame last month for his contributions to the team in his college years, Raymond Marten is not one to accept defeat. Five days a week, he’s out on five-mile walks around the neighborhood. He also continues to work full time, although mostly working from home nowadays. But he’s traded the rugby helmet for some new headgear—an optune cap. The device, which Marten wears almost 24/7 creates Tumor Treating Fields—electric fields that disrupt cancer cell division. Despite his hard battle, this summer, Raymond had a tumor reoccurrence, which was hard for his family to hear. After breaking the news to Lauren, he told her, “If I go down a fighter, I’ll be happy.” That fighting spirit

through. “The support, from the beginning, I don’t even know how to put it into words. The Rockaway community was so supportive and caring after we got his diagnosis. He had all these doctors’ appointments and for almost five months people were bringing us dinner, dessert and drinks since my mom was so busy and unable to cook,” she said. When Lauren announced she’d be running the marathon, that support continued. “That first say I posted my fundraising page, I reached the minimum I needed of $3,500. I see people around town as I’m training and everyone says, ‘we’ll be there cheering for you.’ So that support has been amazing.” As we go to press, Lauren has raised more than six times the minimum. She is the top fundraiser for team StacheStrong with more than $23,000. “I didn’t expect that. I was aiming for about $10,000, but I’ve gone way past that and my goal is to keep raising for this great organization. All of this money goes to brain cancer research at all different institutions, so it’s a great cause,” Lauren Marten said. Also helping the cause is Lauren’s friend and fellow Rockaway resident, Ryan Cronin, whose aunt Pam Collins died after a battle with brain cancer in 2017. They’ll be running together on Sunday. And her dad will be inspiring her along the way. After being interviewed by ABC and showing her father the program, Raymond told her, “I’m so proud of everything you’re doing.” As a marathon veteran, he also offered some advice. “He said the last few miles are really difficult, but you gotta just keep pushing through,” she said. Lauren says her dad’s own fight is the push that will get her to the finish line. “I just think about how he’s fighting for his life every day and if he can do that, I think that will get me through the last few miles,” she said. Marten says donations for StacheStrong will be accepted up to a week after the marathon. To donate, check out: https://support.stachestrong. org/team/363610

Facts You Probably Don’t Need Clocks Matter Daylight Savings Time ends on November 7 at 2 a.m, when the clocks fall back one hour – remember the old adage: FALL BACK, SPRING AHEAD. It can take as long as five to seven days to get your body rhythm back to normal after the clocks are changed. The time change can affect the body’s circadian rhythm which is the natural sleep-wake cycle that repeats every 24 hours. A disrupted circadian rhythm can lead to insomnia, as all body systems are regulated by this rhythm. Daylight Savings Time was first instituted in the United States during WWI to save energy and then re-instituted

during WWII as part of the war effort. Only two states don’t use it (Arizona, and Hawaii). Some states are trying to eliminate it (Georgia, for example). The bottom line for REAL ESTATE is that it’s going to get dark earlier and require some adjustments accordingly. Most people want to view a prospective purchase in the light of day. Therefore, it will become necessary to adjust our schedules to favor afternoon and weekend viewings when possible. The clocks will change again on Sunday, March 13, 2022 when 2 a.m. will change to 3 a.m. on that date. Call me. Love, Robin

Inner Wisdom Learning to tap into your own inner wisdom is a lifelong journey but when the well springs open, you will find your purpose/calling. Follow your heart, it will not fail you. Life is full of trials and errors, try not to get discouraged when your path changes. Everything happens for a reason. It is through our daily struggles where we become stronger and resilient. To be alive is to feel one another’s pain and remain grounded. Use your wisdom to know what is best for you. Not your

parents, society, etc. This is your life, do what makes you happy. One day you will look back and say, YES, I listened to my heart and that has made all the difference. There are times when we feel restricted to speak our truth because it is not popular. Every person should be able to voice their opinion on what is right for them and what is not. It has taken me a lifetime to know how I want to live my life. So many obstacles will be put on your path as you navigate life moving forward. We are hu-

man so we will always be imperfect. Accept, forgive and love. Yoga is the vehicle to help you trust yourself. It is a practice that connects one to your true self. This practice is so much more than just moving the body. It is breathing, chanting, listening, connecting and becoming more in-tuned to your inner wisdom. Yoga makes you feel whole, grounded, calm and kinder. Bringing this ancient practice to others is a gift. We honor who you are and respect every part of you. There is never judgement in yoga and we are here to learn from one another. Listening to the wisdom of your heart will lead you to an authentic life. Not everyone will agree with your decisions but they will be yours to decide not theirs. Satya means truth in Sanskrit. Being true to yourself is knowing who you are and what you want. You are not swayed by others but rather feel deep in your bones what you believe in. Living your truth will not always be

an easy road. Changes will happen and you will learn this is the one constant that you can always count on. Connecting to a yoga community means the world to so many. It is a place to go where there is support. When things fall apart in your life, our community is there to help you. People are kind and politics are left outside the door. We come to refill our empty vessels and leave feeling whole and healthy in mind, body and spirit. The energy is powerful and healing. I have witnessed transformations in students who are now more grounded, calmer, stronger and flexible. One of our students said, “it means so much to me to be connected to a yoga community.” Yes, it means everything to us to be connected to you. Thank you for your support and dedication. May you be free from physical pain, May you be free from psychological holding, May you be free from emotional suffering, May you be spiritually free.

Save the Earth – Actions Underway To Fight Climate Change By Thomas Last

In this article we share some important environmental news from around the globe that will greatly affect our future. This article is not to be pessimistic, as you will see there are signs of optimism grounded on the positive acts of people, organizations, governments, faith leaders, etc. However, there is still great concern that we have pushed our environment to the brink and therefore all of us need to act now. Urban transportation is crucial to the attempt to slow climate change. Home to more than half the world’s population, cities account for more than two-thirds of global carbon dioxide emissions. And transportation is often the largest, and fastest growing source, making it essential to not only encourage more people to stop using their cars and use mass transit more often, but also to make transit itself less polluting and more efficient. See some

of the changes below being implemented today by cities and countries around the world, in order to fight climate change. Bogota, Colombia – The city now has 500 electric buses on

When Barren Bloomed

Floyd Bennett Field was once home to the vibrant community of Barren Island where many residents worked to process the city's waste into useful materials. This handmade model of Barren Island is a recent donation to Gateway National Recreation Area from Linn Albert, the daughter of Willy Maier,

a resident of Barren Island from 1917 to 1935. Late in life, Willy made this model based on his memories of the historic neighborhood. Gateway looks forward to displaying the model at the Ryan Visitor Center for the public to enjoy. (Story and photo courtesy of the Jamaica Bay Rockaway Parks Conservancy)

the roads and contracts to buy another 1,000 by 2022 making Bogota’s electric bus fleet one of the largest in the world. Cable cars are being built to connect hill-top communities. Norway is looking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by half by 2030. In the city of Bergen, buses and trams run on electricity. Taxi operators must switch to all-electric vehicles by 2024 with the government providing subsidies to install charges at home. Public ferries are converting from diesel fuel to battery power. These are remarkable changes considering Norway’s abundant supplies of gas and oil and that now wants to be a leader for the electric age. Berlin is re-introducing electric tram lines that were ripped out when the Berlin Wall went up. hills. Bergen, a city by the fjords in western Norway, is moving its public ferries away from diesel and onto batteries — a remarkable shift in a petrostate that has for decades enriched itself from the sale of oil and gas and that now wants to be a leader in marine vessels for the electric age. Here is some more notable news on action being taken by major universities. A list of 1,300 schools and institutions that have divested or are in the process to divest. This support acknowledges the fact that fos-

sils fuels is neither financially responsible nor morally defensible. Pope Francis has joined with some 40 religious leaders representing the world’s major religions to call for immediate action to combat climate change. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is moving rapidly to limit hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), the Earth-warming chemicals used in air-conditioning and refrigeration. According to reports, HFCs are thousands of times more potent than carbon dioxide at warming the planet and therefore it is extremely important to limit these man-made chemicals as soon as possible. The Environmental Protection Agency has moved to sharply reduce the use and production of the powerful greenhouse gases central to refrigeration and air-conditioning in an attempt to slow the pace of global warming. This swift action by the U.S. and the E.P.A. to eliminate HFCs along with the decision to rejoin the Paris climate accord demonstrates that the U.S. is committed to fighting climate change and global warming. So, the message from far and near is clear and simple - let’s work together to fight climate change to ensure a brighter future for our children and grandchildren, before it’s too late. Get on board the ‘green’ train and start reducing your carbon footprint today. Here are some more tips on how you can help your planet in need. Plant a tree on your property or visit www.plantabillion. org to have one planted for you; Don’t idle your car; Walk/ bike instead of using your car; Choose glass, aluminum and stainless steel over plastic; Stop using disposable straws, Be wise when you shop, buy only what you need; Don’t use air fresheners containing chemicals; If you are chilly, put on a sweater, don’t turn up the heat; Think before you print; Avoid single use plastics; Hang up laundry to dry; Use LED bulbs; Say no to extra materials when you order take out; Don’t throw away organic waste. Compost it. Remember, there is no planet B.

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Pancreatic Cancer on the Rise Over 60,000 new cases of pancreatic cancer are anticipated in the U.S. in 2021. The incidence is rising at a rate of 0.5% to 1% per year, and pancreatic cancer is projected to become the second-leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. by 2030. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) accounts for about 90% of pancreatic tumors. Most patients with pancreatic cancer present with nonspecific symptoms at an advanced stage with disease that is not amenable to curative surgery. No effective screening tests exist. The fiveyear survival rate approached 10% for the first time in 2020, as

compared to 5.26% in 2000. The median age at diagnosis is 71, with the male/female incidence ratio of 1.3/1.0. At presentation, 50% of patients have metastatic disease, while only 10% to 15% have localized disease that is operable. By far, the largest lifestyle risk factor for PDAC is cigarette smoking. There is a modest association with daily alcohol consumption (three or more drinks per day), and chronic pancreatitis increases the risk of PDAC by 13-fold. Other risk factors include obesity, and a diet high in processed meat, high-fructose corn syrup-containing beverages, and saturated

fat. Nearly 10% of patients have pathologic gene variants including BRCA1, BRCA2, and ATM (ataxia telangiectasia syndrome). As mentioned above, presenting symptoms can be mild and vague and include loss of appetite, indigestion, and change in bowel habits. Because most tumors arise in the head of the pancreas (which the common bile duct passes through), some patients present with symptoms of biliary obstruction which include dark urine, jaundice, appetite loss, fatigue, weight loss, and pancreatic insufficiency. Because the pancreas makes insulin, new-onset diabetes or worsening of pre-existing diabetes may be a primary manifestation of PDAC. Diagnosing PDAC involves the use of imaging studies like CT and MRI scans. There is no specific blood test for it, however serum carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) is a well-established biomarker for PDAC. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration is used for biopsy. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) can be useful to open and place a stent

in a blocked common bile duct. Staging the tumor is an important factor in determining prognosis, and PDAC often spreads to the liver, lymph nodes, lungs, peritoneum, and bones. Non-surgical treatments usually involve traditional chemotherapies, most commonly FOLFIRINOX (fluorouracil, oxaliplatin, irinotecan, and leucovorin) in high-functioning patients. The role of stereotactic radiotherapy is still being investigated. Novel therapies are being evaluated to treat those with genetic mutations other than BRCA. As further research is conducted, the search for a reliable and specific test or biomarker for PDAC goes on. As mentioned above, CA 19-9 is a useful biomarker, but it is non-specific. The key is finding a way to diagnose pancreatic cancer early in the disease course when it is still both treatable and curable, instead of finding it way too late as unfortunately happens all too often today. CHILDREN SUBJECT TO GREATER PRIVACY CONCERNS ByB yGille G i l lAnn e A nRabbin, n R a b bEsq., i n , ECIPP/US, s q . , C I PCIPP/E P/US

The pandemic resulted in a shift to online learning, with many schools issuing devices (laptops, tablets) to students who otherwise would not have had online access. The Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT), a think tank and advocacy organization, recently released two reports delving into whether students who rely on school-issued devices are subject to more monitoring than their peers who have their own. Monitoring can take the form of teachers viewing students’ online activity in real time, closing tabs if they think too many are open or a student is engaging in distracting activity, switching tabs, blocking sites, and viewing browsing history. “Ed tech” software can block access to content deemed “adult” or containing keywords that have been flagged. Some applications have even allowed

educators to view inside students’ homes without their or their families’ knowledge. Monitoring can have unintended consequences. Students whose tabs are regularly closed are not allowed the opportunity to develop study and concentration skills. Students engaging in questionable activity based on their searches can be brought to the attention of disciplinary or law enforcement authorities; students using personal devices are not similarly exposed. Abused, suicidal, or other students in challenging personal circumstances looking for help online and believing their searches to be private can ended up being “outed,” potentially put at further risk, and their efforts to seek help chilled. According to the CDT, many school-issued devices enable monitoring: teachers reported that monitoring software is used on 71% of school-issued devices, but only on 16% of personal devices. In addition, according to the CDT, “school-is-

sued devices tend to enable tracking of student activity to a much greater extent than personal devices…. Because those students who are reliant on school-issued devices may be subject to more pervasive monitoring, this suggests that students in higher-poverty districts are subjected to a higher degree of monitoring than students in wealthier districts who are more likely to have their own devices.” The CDT has called on the federal government to clarify monitoring requirements mandated by the Children’s Internet Protection Act, a federal law that imposes requirements on schools in return for providing discounted communications services and products. Furthermore, the CDT has asked school districts to ensure that they protect student privacy and address the “privacy and equity concerns” arising from monitoring. Moreover, the CDT has urged vendors of student monitoring software to provide greater transparency

about their products. There are some good reasons for monitoring, like ensuring device security and that all children can access online education and use ed tech. But it’s a slippery slope, and surveillance of poor children should not be a quid pro quo for their educations. To eliminate or at least mitigate this aspect of the digital divide, school districts might consider making school-issued devices mandatory for all students, regardless of whether a child can afford one. Surely deep-pocketed tech companies would support this for the sake of fairness and equity. Nonetheless, schools should not be allowed to turn into surveillance states. If your child is using a school-issued device, make sure you understand what monitoring is occurring. ***The information contained in this column is provided for informational purposes only and should not be construed as legal advice.

Wrestle Talk PRO WRESTLING NEWS By Eric Jayden

This week we start off with news from IMPACT Wrestling as they have signed Independent Star "Speed Ball" Mike Bailey to a contract. Mike Bailey is known for his appearances with many of the top independent wrestling companies around the world like Evolve, Progress Wrestling, Ring of Honor (ROH) and Dramatic Dream Team (DDT) in Japan. Diehard independent wrestling fans will be excited to see Mike Bailey on national TV. Speaking of the Independent Wrestling Scene, New York City promotion Briicombination Wrestling (BCW) has announced its return after briefly shutting down operations during the peak of the Covid outbreak, they come back starting Friday, January 21, 2022 with their an-

nual event "Queen Of The North 3" which will be held in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey for ticket information on BCW's Huge Return back, please call 347-446-5142. A recent airing of WWE SmackDown (Replay) that ran against All Elite Wrestling (AEW) only drew 278,000 viewers, compared to the AEW's Rampage Show which aired on TNT, and drew 623,000 viewers. It seems to me that fans have made their choice on which is the better product to watch during this time slot and it’s not the WWE. It will be interesting to watch and see how future replays of Smackdown will continue to fair against AEW. Now, speaking of AEW, it has been announced that they will hold a special on TNT called "Battle of the Belts" on January 8, 2022 which will be part of a quarterly set of special shows that will be held on TNT

as AEW's Dynamite Show is set to move to TBS on January 5, 2022. These quarterly specials are rumored to have high profile matches from AEW. The Question of the Week comes from Nelda M. in Far Rockaway and she said, "I feel AEW Dynamite is so much a better show than WWE Raw, which do you like better?" Well, Nelda I actually prefer watching AEW Dynamite as I only catch RAW replays to keep myself updated. But you are absolutely correct, AEW Dynamite

is a much better product and it keeps the audience coming back for more. Keep sending in those messages to eavil183@yahoo.com and have a great weekend everyone!
