Incumbents Dominate Election Results By Katie McFadden

Well, the votes are in and so are incumbents. Tuesday’s election day ended with many local elected officials holding on to their seats. Here’s a breakdown of the results, with the latest numbers from the New York State Board of Elections. The vote for District 15 State Senate and the 23rd Assembly District made for some tough choices as Senator Joe Addabbo and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato both had challengers that put up a good fight. However, the incumbents remain on top. Senator Joe Addabbo, who has had the position since 2009, was up against Breezy Point resident Tom Sullivan, a financial sector specialist and a U.S. Army Reserve colonel. However Queens decided they like what Addabbo has done, and chose to keep

him around as he won about 61 percent of the vote, with Sullivan earning nearly 35 percent. The Rockaway Times reached out to Senator Addabbo following his win, who said, "I am thankful the people of my district sent me back to work for them. I truly appreciate the support the district has shown in re-electing me to represent them in Albany and in their communities for another two years. It is my honor to be able to continue to build on the success my staff and I have had since I was elected to the Senate in 2008, by working on flood mitigation projects and protecting the peninsula from future storms. I look forward to being a part of furthering Rockaway's post-Sandy renaissance." In the 23rd District Assembly race, Republican Matthew Pecorino, the budget director

for Councilman Eric Ulrich, challenged Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, but Queens showed they like the work Pheffer Amato has done in the past two years, and decided to crown her winner with about 64 percent of the vote. Pecorino put up a good race, earning about 30 percent of the vote. The Rockaway Times followed up with Pheffer Amato, who said, "I am so honored and THRILLED to have been re-elected to the NYS Assembly representing all the hardworking families of the 23rd Assembly District! Thank you so much for the overwhelming support. To all the volunteers who helped make this happen and to the voters who made their voices heard—I am so grateful.” She added, “I pride myself on being an outspoken advocate for our children, seniors, and veterans of this community and will continue to fight every single day to ensure our government is more responsive, and provides the highest quality of service for our neighborhoods.” For the local congressional race, Congressman Gregory Meeks keeps his position as he ran unopposed. However, despite no opponent, Meeks only obtained 86 percent of the vote, as 13 percent chose to leave their ballot blank in this section. The 10th District State Senate race also wasn’t much of a competition as Senator James Sanders ran unopposed. He received nearly 91 percent of the vote, with others leaving their ballots blank or voting for write-in candidates. The District 31 Assembly ballot left for little choice as well with Assemblywoman Michele Titus running unopposed. She received about 90 percent of the vote, with some leaving their ballots blank or selecting a write-in. In the big races, by now, most will know that the Democrats have reclaimed the House, yet Republicans maintain their hold on the Senate. In New

York, most will know that Governor Andrew Cuomo held on, earning nearly 58 percent of the vote, with Republican challenger Marc Molinaro earning about 36 percent of the vote. In the race for State Comptroller, Thomas DiNapoli held on to his position with 64 percent of the vote. Senator Kristen Gillibrand also held on to her U.S. Senate seat with 64 percent of the vote to challenger Chele Farley’s 32 percent. For Attorney General, Public Advocate Letitia James won with nearly 60 percent of the vote. She will be the first black female to become NYS Attorney General. In the race for Justice of the Supreme Court 11th Judicial District, voters had a choice of five out of seven. The five Democrat choices came on top: Laurence Love, Ushir Pandit-Durant, Valerie Brathwaite Nelson, Robert Caloras and Maureen Healy. When it came to the three proposals on the ballot, New York said yes to all three. For Proposal 1 on Campaign Finance, 80 percent of New Yorkers voted Yes. For Proposal 2 on the Civic Engagement Commission, 65 percent voted Yes. With Proposal 3, on establishing term limits for Community Board members, 72 percent said Yes. Johnny Cash would’ve never had a hit song. These days, you can name a boy Sue and never have to worry about him getting in a brawl in Gatlinburg in mid-July. Now, if you heard a boy was named Sue, you wouldn’t (or shouldn’t!) bat an eye. Though you might ask if that was spelled S-U-E or was it S-I-O-U-X, like the Native American tribe. Dana Andrews was a tough guy actor with a girl’s name. Michael Learned had a guy’s name though that didn’t stop her from being a lead actress on The Waltons. That was it, way back. There were just a handful of such name switcheroos. You couldn’t say the names were unisex if there were a thousand boys named Rory

Boys Named Sue and then one girl. It was still a boy’s name. If they call the girl Rory, like a nickname, because it’s short for Aurora, fine. But it’s a boy’s name. I don’t care if Ethel Kennedy named her daughter, Rory. But now, names really are unisex. And as they say, not that there’s anything wrong with it! But that doesn’t make it any easier for us who grew up with guys named Kelly. That name was basically stolen by adorable baby girls. Others are a toss-up. Jaime is a tough one. I’d say the battle is still underway. But girls tend to win. Morgan Freeman is a great actor and a man’s man but that first name is on the feminine side of the aisle now. If I’m wearing a blindfold and somebody says Taylor, Riley, or Cassidy, I’m thinking girl. Cassidy can be tricky. If the kid is named after David Cas-

sidy, it’s a girl. But if the kid is named after Butch Cassidy, that’s something else. Jordan, Casey, Hayden. Those are tough. I’m leaning girl but I can think of a guy or two for each of those. If you’re not sure, it’s a losing battle. Girls do a nice job commandeering boys’ names. I mean, how about Hunter? That sounds kinda macho but I’m thinking Hunter green which makes me think it’s mostly for girls now. Jackie and Pat are interchangeable, always have been. And that’s ok. You’re not gonna have an inner dialogue in your head saying, “That’s a boy’s name.” Or vice versa. Sean is a boy. And so is Shane, though girls are coming up on the outside. Yes, I’ve noticed we have a Shane, a female who writes a column for us. I’m keeping an eye out on this trend. But girls,

c’mon, can you leave this one with the guys? As the name drifts away, I’m just gonna say through tears, “Shane, come back!” If the name is a season, a month, a mood, or a time of day, I’m thinking girl. Summer Smith. April Smith. Dreamy Smith. Dawn Smith. Time of day might be an exception. Dawn, Twilight, Morning, all girls. But if I heard Three O’Clock Smith, I’d think it was a guy. Probably a gunfighter or something. I think John and Mohammad are staying in the boy’s column, but things change. If I meet a girl named Kevin, I’m gonna find myself saying, “Really?” knowing it’s over. Maybe we should give boys dogs’ names. “Hey Spot, can you say Dad?” “Come on Rover, I’m driving you to school.” I’m thinking adorable little girls won’t be stealing those names.

***** Our thoughts go out to the families who lost loved ones when Flight 587 crashed in Belle Harbor seventeen years ago. Please see Katie McFadden’s recap on Page 11. One astonishing part of that day that shouldn’t be forgotten was the leadership shown by Fire Chief Pete Hayden. The Chief had worked every single day at Ground Zero for two months, since 9/11. On his first day off, he saw Flight 587 plane coming down and crash, and was among the first on the scene. From there, he led the emergency response. A hero in our midst. ***** Our thoughts are also with the friends, family and many former students of Mrs. Annmarie Todes. The beloved teacher to many at PS 114 and Scholars’ Academy died on November 4. ***** It’s already in the rearview mirror and we don’t want a curfew, but trick-or-treaters ringing the bell past 8 p.m. is just wrong. Of course, it’s the unthinking adults who do this that

we really want to admonish. We heard one woman rang a bell five times and then knocked! As if it was an emergency. Give us a break! ***** Rockaway Rotary will be conducting a food drive for local pantries on Saturday, November 17 from 8 a.m. to noon at Stop and Shop on Beach Channel Drive in Rockaway Park. Non-perishable items will be collected. Please be generous. ***** Along, the same lines, the Graybeards will be collecting food items and have already dropped off bags and a list of suggested non-perishables in a few neighborhoods. Please have your bag ready by 9 a.m. this Saturday, November 10 for pick-up. ***** Congrats to the election winners. Stacey Amato and Joe Addabbo have kept their seats on the State level. Although Tom Sullivan came up short in his challenge to Addabbo, he ran a good race as a newcomer and we hope he’ll consider

Page 7 trying again for this or another position. It’s worth noting that Addabbo lost his first campaign to Al Stabile and he’s been winning ever since. It’s not easy running a campaign and we salute those who give it a try. ***** More congratulations are in order and they go out to Dan Rayder who won four tickets to St. John’s Basketball. Cars parked for church, including funerals, sometimes get ticketed. Cops or Traffic Enforcement people should really exercise judgment here. It’s not a slippery slope. Well, what about people “just running into a store” as if because one is overlooked they should all get a pass. No. Doesn’t have to be like that. Churchgoers would prefer to park legally but if there are no spots available, they should be able to attend service.

Fire Claims Life of Rockaway Beach Resident On Monday, November 5, a fire broke out on the second floor of a two-story home at 173 Beach 95th Street. Firefighters worked quickly to get the fire under control, but the incident ended in tragedy as 47-year-old Dawn Greig and her German Shepherd, both died.

Firefighters responded to a call received shortly before 8 a.m. Engine 266 and Ladder 137 were first on the scene of 60 firefighters that were sent to battle the fast-moving blaze. However when firefighters extinguished the flames and were able to get inside the building, they found Greig unconscious

on the second floor. Greig was quickly transported to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, where she died. Three firefighters were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Greig’s dog, Champ, an 8-year-old German Shepherd, died in the fire, according to a report for the New York Daily News. The incident is still under

investigation, but according to the Daily News report, a space heater may have been to blame on the chilly morning. Greig, whose building has had heat issues since Hurricane Sandy, asked her sister, Denise Greig, if she could borrow a space heater. Denise told the News that the space heater was found severely melted and may have been a factor in starting the fire. Denise said Dawn Greig, a daycare worker, was an easygoing person with a good sense of humor. She will be missed. Following the fire, the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit was in the area, stationed at the shopping center at 8807 Rockaway Beach Blvd., to provide fire safety information to neighbors. As Sunday, November 4 marked the end of Daylight Savings Time, people are reminded around this time to check on their smoke detectors and replace the batteries. Remembering Flight 587, 17 Years Later By Katie McFadden

On Monday, November 12, 2001, many in Rockaway were home as it was the day Veterans Day was being observed. It began as a normal, beautiful Monday holiday in Rockaway, however shortly after 9 a.m., that would change for many. At 9:16 a.m., an Airbus A300 came crashing down in Belle Harbor and the day became one that would forever be remembered in Rockaway history. As the plane crashed, its engines were flung, one landing on Beach 128th and another, nearly missing the gas tanks of Bulloch’s gas station on Beach 129th Street. The body of the Dominican Republic-bound plane, directly hit at Beach 131st and Newport Avenue. As firefighters took on the blazing homes and remnants of the plane and the smell of fuel filled the air among the confusion, many in Rockaway feared the worst as the ripples of the

massive terror attack that took place just two months before, still resonated through the neighborhood recovering from that loss. This was another terror attack, many thought immediately. Investigations would find that the crash wasn’t an act of terror, yet an act of pilot error. However the impact of the crash of Flight 587 still brought waves of pain once again, as great loss was felt. The impact killed all 260 people (251 passengers and nine crewmembers) on board Amer-

ican Airlines Flight 587. On the ground, five Rockaway neighbors perished; Thomas and Helen Concannon, Kathie Lawler, and her son, Christopher, and Franco Pomponio. It may be 17 years later, but that pain still resonates for those impacted by the loss, and each year, the victims continue to be remembered. On the anniversary of the crash, family of the plane victims would gather near the crash site to remember their loved ones. Starting in 2006, their memorial ceremony found a new home when a permanent memorial park was created by the boardwalk on Beach 116th Street. Each year since, that ceremony has continued year after year, and this year is no different. This year’s Flight 587 Memorial Ceremony will be held at the Beach 116th Street Memorial, beginning at 9 a.m. Mayor Bill de Blasio is expected to attend. The ceremony is open to all.

Rockaway also honors the local victims in its own ways. The Kathie & Christopher Lawler Foundation was established in memory of local victims, Kathie and Christopher Lawler. The Foundation raises money for the Catholic Foundation of Brooklyn and Queens, to assist senior priests with the costs of healthcare and transportation as they grow older. The main event of the Foundation is the Kathie and Christopher Lawler Dinner Dance. This year, it will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 17 at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston (7200 Douglaston Pkwy, Little Neck, NY). Best Dressed Man In Rockaway To Debut Play For Autism Awareness By Kami-Leigh Agard

Ever seen a colorfully-suited tall, lean man with a dazzling smile in Rockaway, walking into various local establishments, dancing with the prettiest ladies in the crowd? Well, Rockaway native Owen Loof, aka The Best Dressed Man in Rockaway, is not just a lover of suits. He’s also a Vietnam War veteran, retired NYC Transit Authority worker, former history teacher in Hawaii, an actor and playwright, who will be debuting his one-act play, The Missing Kiss, on Friday, November 16, 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th Street). Why? According to Loof, it’s all in the spirit of sharing an unforgettable experience, and talents in his beloved community, and to help raise funds to bless local families with loved ones on the autism spectrum with a special holiday gift.

As the saying goes, 68-yearold Loof is certainly “a tall glass of water,” not just physically, but spiritually, and his depth of experiences transcends all

generations, despite the decades he has under his belt. “I grew up in Rockaway, and like many, I got certain derailments. Let’s just say it was growing pains, and you see how tall I am! However to this day, I sincerely believe my wife, Peggy, of 45 years, (who died after a long battle with breast cancer), helped me grow, and ultimately, saved me. From heaven, she’s probably looking down and grinning, not surprised that I found a new creative avenue to resurrect, after a painful period of mourning,” Loof said. And creative, Loof is, not just with his suits and acting, but with his new artistic platform, playwriting. “A while back, I attended a playwriting class hosted by the Rockaway Theatre Company. Unfortunately, I was the only one that showed up. However, that one meeting I had with

the instructor, Frank, left me with a wealth of inspiration. He said, ‘The first thing you write, should be something that you know.’ I never forgot his wise counsel, and well, that’s what I did,” Loof said. Loof’s play, The Missing Kiss, is based on a real-life experience he had with a woman, Sheila, he met while doing some background acting for a recent film, The Greatest Showman. “The story with Sheila is a crazy, weird story. We were going out on a few dates, and I was always of course a gentleman. Very old school and polite, but of course, I was hoping that in time, I would finally get a kiss. When the evening finally came that I was brave enough to approach her, she said, ‘I can’t kiss you until you get your teeth fixed.’ It was an awkward Continued on page 13

moment, but kind of funny when you think about it,” Loof laughed. Loof said that experience drove him to write the play. “Well, according to the counsel I received, it was indeed one of the most recent memorable experiences I had, and I wanted to write about it,” he said. As for the challenges in writing the play, Loof said it was actually disciplining himself to sit down and write. “I knew I wanted to do it, but the real challenge was sitting down, writing and committing myself to not just write, but finish. I love comedy. I’ve done comedy sketches on stage, but this was definitely a challenge. What took time was setting up the plot, and the lead into the story, without giving out the ending right away. However, once I got into it, the story just started to unfold.” And the upcoming play’s debut has a few twists and popup appearances from locals. Rockaway Times columnist

When asked why he wants to donate the proceeds towards local autism families, Loof said, “It’s kind of embarrassing, but I was on the set for a show, and there was this guy who was making weird noises and jumping up and down. First, I thought he was just being disruptive and maybe was crazy. However, after it dawned on me that perhaps he was autistic, which was confirmed. I felt bad for not being more understanding, and I know a lot of families locally, who have a child with autism. And as the holidays are approaching, I thought it would be a great idea to debut the play in the community — that I know and love — all in the spirit of supporting equally local artistic communities like autism. Water Will Flow for Beach 116th After a battle of will, will there be water, or won’t there, Rockaway businesses can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that water disruptions won’t be a concern during normal business hours near Beach 116th Street. The change comes after Councilman Eric Ulrich sent a letter to the NYC Dept. of Design and Construction (DDC). In recent weeks, businesses around Beach 116th Street received several notices about daily water shutoffs related to the DDC construction project along Beach Channel Drive. Business owners were given a heads up, only to find that water service wasn’t shut off, but it could be turned off the following day, and a pattern ensued. Business owners became increasingly frustrated, as the threat of water shutoffs would impact most businesses in the area. Thanks to the action of Councilman Ulrich, the threat of water disruptions will likely no longer be a concern. According to a press release,

on October 22, Ulrich wrote a letter to Commissioner Lorraine Grillo urging the DDC to alter work hours for project SANDHW11 along the Beach 116th commercial corridor. After following up with DDC, a representative confirmed the agency obtained the necessary nighttime construction permits and that water service would no longer be disrupted during business hours. DDC's nighttime construction permits were approved by the Dept. of Transportation's Office of Construction Mitigation and Coordination (DOT OCMC). Water service disruptions along the commercial corridor on Beach 116th Street are now limited to the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. The new nighttime hours went into effect on Halloween - nine days after Ulrich made the written request. "I am thrilled to announce that our office was able to work with DDC to change the construction hours along the Beach 116th Street business

corridor - just in time for the crucial holiday season. This is a huge win for the merchants who have been adversely impacted by these water service disruptions," Councilman Ulrich said. "I applaud DDC for working so quickly to address these concerns. I'd like to thank Commissioner Grillo - and the entire DDC team - for all of their efforts to support our local business owners in Rockaway." The SANDHW11 project is underway to make crucial street infrastructure upgrades along Beach Channel Drive, between Beach 116th Street and Beach 124th Street. Once complete, the project will repair and replace sewers, water mains, traffic signals and street lighting in an area that sustained significant damage from Superstorm Sandy. The scope of work necessary to make the planned upgrades required DDC to temporarily close water mains during peak business hours. In his initial outreach letter to Commission-

er Grillo, the Councilman vocalized concerns about the daytime water service disruptions, which he said crippled businesses that rely on water service to operate. "The current daytime work hours severely harm businesses in my district and even threaten their ability to stay in business," Ulrich wrote in his October 22 letter. "In the nearly six years since Super Storm Sandy, the Rockaways have made a tremendous comeback. Businesses are reopening and new businesses are starting. There is a sense of optimism in the air. However, this project threatens that optimism. It's imperative the city do everything possible to help these businesses." While Ulrich acknowledged DDC must perform this vital infrastructure work - and that some inconveniences cannot be avoided, Councilman Ulrich hoped DDC would offer the affected merchants a resolution before the crucial holiday season.

Breaking the Mold & the Code During WWII By Katie McFadden

When Belle Harbor resident, Ruth Mirsky, heads to JASA’s Rockaway Park Senior Center, she’ll often be found playing games, from Mahjong to Canasta, Rummikub to Scrabble. After all, playing and winning games is something that comes naturally to the 95-year-old. Or perhaps it was her military training that gives her an advantage. Mirsky was among the code breakers during World War II that helped to intercept Japan’s secret codes to discover their military plan and ultimately shorten the war. “Code breakers love games,” Mirsky said. As we approach Veterans Day, it is important to remember those who sacrificed everything on the battlefields of America’s wars, but also those who made unique service contributions during wartime. Ruth Mirsky is certainly an example of the women that made unique contributions for their country. Mirsky, who grew up in Queens and Long Island, was 20 years old when she decided to do something for her country during WWII. “My brother, who is about two-and-a-half years younger than me, decided to enlist after the U.S. entered the war. Rather than be drafted, he wanted to do what he wanted and decided where he wanted to go,” Mirsky said. It wasn’t long after that she chose to join too. “I decide that I wanted to do my part. They were starting the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service, a unit of the U.S. Naval Reserves) and I just thought that I’d like to go into the Navy, and that was that,” Mirsky said. “It was a very patriotic time and people really cared about the country, so a lot of people enlisted, including quite a few women. It was that patriotism that made me join.” Mirksy’s family was torn by the decision of the 20-year-old. “I had never really done anything or really spread my wings and my father didn’t want me to go. He was in the first World War and he thought it wasn’t a good idea. My mother, on the other hand, was a woman way before her time, and she said, ‘I think

you should go.’ I had to be either 21, or 20 with parent consent, so my mother finally signed the papers,” she said. After receiving permission from her parents, nothing was stopping Mirsky, even her shortcomings. “I was short. The Navy had requirements. You had to be 5’1 and weigh at least a hundred pounds. So I stretched myself at the physical and my family helped fatten me up and eventually I got into the Navy. They needed everyone they could get, I guess,” Mirksy said. Mirsky went on to boot camp training for four weeks at Hunter College, before being sent to yeoman school in Cedar Falls, Iowa. “After eight weeks, I was suppose to be a yeoman, but they decided they needed people in communications, so they gave me a Specialist Q Second Class rating and sent me to Washington, D.C.,” she said. There, Mirsky was part of a group of women assigned to help break Japanese codes in a military police-guarded building that people had FBI clearance to enter and do top secret work. Mirsky lived with a group of 14 women in barracks across the street from the office that they would go to each day and get to work. “We worked around the clock. It was more than an office, it was a whole business that was open 24 hours a day and we would come in for shifts to do our part,” she said. The work was so secret, that others in the building didn’t know what others were working on. “One person didn’t know what the other person was doing because you weren’t

allowed to talk. When I went home on leave, I went to visit my former boss and he said, ‘what have you been doing there? The FBI was here asking all kinds of questions.’ I couldn’t even tell anybody. People thought I was a secretary. We couldn’t talk amongst ourselves about the work we were doing, but everybody had a small part in it,” Mirsky said. According to Mirsky, her part was to intercept the Japanese messages that came through and organize them so fellow officers could break the codes. Mirsky even learned some Japanese words to help coordinate the effort.

65. Mirsky remained close with the group of 14 women that she lived in the barracks with and worked with. The group maintained a red robin mailing group, where one would send a letter to one person in the group and each lady would add their own message and pass all of the previous letters to the next in the group. They also attended big occasions for each other, like weddings and had reunions. Today, Mirsky, the youngest of the original group, is the only one still alive. However their contributions will never be forgotten. Mirsky’s and the story of

Despite not knowing the work everyone else was doing, everyone knew what was going on when some good news that would contribute to the war ending early, came through. “We were all in this business that was eventually able to break the Japanese code and discover where the Japanese ships were. At the time we were doing it, I don’t think we realized how important it was. But that day was something you don’t forget. There was a great excitement in our office that day when we found out they cracked the code. Everyone all over was so excited. It was a wonderful day,” Mirsky recalled. Mirsky served with the Navy for about two and a half years, until she married her husband, Harry in May of 1945. Mirsky met the Army Air Corps soldier while working in Washington, D.C. Shortly after they married, Mirsky was discharged. She and Harry were married for 39 years, until he died early, at the age of

After not being able to say much about her work during WWII, Mirsky was glad to contribute what she could for Mundy’s book. And on November 21, JASA’s Rockaway Park Senior Center will do its part to celebrate its veterans by handing out red, white and blue cupcakes and American flags to all. Mirsky played a large, yet unsung role during WWII, but she remains humble about being recognized, especially around Veterans Day. “I think it’s great that they honor everyone, especially people that really deserve it, but I don’t like to brag.” We’ll brag for her. Thank you, Ruth, and to all of our soldiers and veterans that served and sacrificed for this country. Your contributions will always be remembered, not only on Veterans Day, but every day.

St. John’s Opens Kosher Respite Room

On Thursday, November 1, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital celebrated the grand opening of a new Achiezer Kosher Respite Room, which is run under the auspices of Achiezer, a community organization that serves many in their times of need. Fibromyalgia, once thought to be imaginary, is now recognized as a real disease. It is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory, and mood issues. It occurs in about two to four percent of the population and is much more common in women, especially women in their forties. It is a disease of the nervous system and it is not an autoimmune disease. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way the brain processes pain signals. In other words, it is thought to be a disease of the central nervous system. Many people with fibromyalgia also have tension headaches, temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ, or jaw pain), irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, and depression. While the cause

The Pain Is Real is unknown, there is thought to be a genetic component, plus fibromyalgia often develops following physical trauma, surgery, serious infection, or significant psychological stress. The pain associated with fibromyalgia is widespread, or “all over,” and touching the skin may be painful. It is often described as a constant dull ache that has lasted for over three months and occurs on both sides of the body both above and below the waist. Fatigue is a significant factor and patients report being tired upon awakening despite having slept for a long period. Restless leg syndrome and sleep apnea have been associated with fibromyalgia. Cognitive issues, like difficulty concentrating and paying attention, are common and often referred to as “fibro fog.” As mentioned above, there is a genetic component and is

often seen in relatives of patients with it. There are no specific tests to diagnose fibromyalgia. The diagnosis is usually made from symptoms and a lack of physical findings, meaning that despite the pain, there is no redness or swelling of the skin or joints. Many clinicians, in order to diagnose the patient, will order lab testing including the antinuclear antibody test, or ANA. This can cause confusion because a high ANA level, while seen in diseases like lupus, is often seen in people without lupus or any other autoimmune disease. Treatment of fibromyalgia can be difficult. Antidepressants and gabapentinoids (gabapentin and pregabalin) are often prescribed with varying success. Opioids should be avoided because they are usually not helpful, plus they are highly addictive. Moderate physical exercise is often

quite helpful as exercise has positive effects on the brain and muscles. Many patients may be reluctant to exercise, out of fear that it will worsen the pain and fatigue, but starting with low impact exercise like pool aquatics is often very helpful. Psychotherapy can also help, especially with mood disorders and depression. Likewise, especially for more severe cases, cognitive behavioral therapy can be of assistance. Correction of sleep disorders is also important. In summary, the treatment of fibromyalgia needs to focus not on the pain but on other, correctible symptoms like mood, sleep, exercise status, stressors, and maladaptive attitudes towards pain. Ale Of A Tale Recently 7,000 American sailors and Marines visited Iceland's capital city of Reykjavik as part of NATO’s Trident Juncture military exercise. Within a matter of hours, Iceland was facing a national crisis as the visiting swabbies and jarheads immediately set about visiting the local taverns, where they quickly consumed much of that city's beer supply. Local news in Reykjavik reported that the sailors and Marines preferred local beers over imports, and were very willing to sample different microbrews as well as the more popular standard lagers. One restaurant, Sæta Svínið, and good luck pronouncing that, was one of the first to run out of beer and tried borrowing from other businesses that were better stocked, but the Americans proved too many. As beer supplies in the city's

various watering holes started drying up, owners who said they had never experienced such an assault on their ale supply, put out a beer distress signal. One of Iceland’s local breweries, Ölgerð Egils Skallagrímssonar, answered the call and immediately began working overtime to distribute emergency beer shipments that could furnish the parched Americans with sustenance. When the ships finally departed Reykjavík, the city with a population of about 120,000 in a country with just under 340,000, was finally able to breathe, their stock of ale and lager replenished. Iceland had survived the assault, the Americans having drank their fill with no reports or complaints of overindulgent debauchery — a true success story, so much so that many of the city's bar owners were later seen gathering down at the seaside with smiles on their faces praying to Poseidon, the God of the Sea, to return the thirsty American brewski-loving min-

ions to their shores again....as soon as possible! As I get older, I am prone to my fair share of physical ailments and, as a result, I am continually engaged in a battle of wills with my daughter Victoria, an avowed vegetarian, about my diet which, truth be told, would drive any sane dietician insane. Yes, I am a meat lover, an avowed carnivore with the exception of venison, which I avoid since I was emotionally devastated as a child when my parents took me to see the Disney movie Bambi and I witnessed, albeit offscreen, the hunter intentionally shoot and kill the young buck's mother. I actually also avoid rabbit because of the similar distress suffered when I had to endure Glen Close kill and boil a cute little bunny in Fatal Attraction. I have attempted to explain to Vicki that the word "vegetarian" is naught but an old Indian term used to describe a poor hunter within the tribe. Furthermore, my ancestors did not claw their

way to the top of the food chain just to make sure I ate salad. Besides, I fully consider myself to be a vegetarian by proxy. Cows eat grass and I eat them. Victoria's only response to my counter-arguments has been, "There is something seriously wrong with you!" Suffice it to say that, thus far, we agree to disagree. Holiday Jumping By Beth Hanning

So now that Halloween is officially over we can start talking about the next holiday season. The next holiday is Thanksgiving. Why is Thanksgiving so shunned in society? I remember in elementary school, coloring wonderful pictures of cornucopias, and close dinner gatherings between the Native Americans and the Pilgrims at the first Thanksgiving. Is it because now the story is out and the origin is that we technically pillaged the Native Americans and caused their destruction? Why doesn’t Thanksgiving get any recognition in the world of media and retail? The only Thanksgiving tune that comes to mind is Adam Sandler’s “The Thanksgiving Song.” However, that song was originally performed in 1992 on Saturday Night Live. Many “millennials” do not

even know the popular culture references in the holiday song. Many know Elvis, but do they know Jimmy Walker from “Good Times” or model Cheryl Tiegs? No other popular culture singer or songwriter has managed to pen a tune to spending time with the relatives and eating and drinking to excess? They would not even have to be as original as Adam Sandler and write their own song. They could Google a list of Thanksgiving songs and remake an old song with an updated beat, similarly to what many artists do with Christmas tunes. Forget about music. What about Thanksgiving films? I love to see the classic Steve Martin and John Candy Planes Trains and Automobiles on television a few times during November. This comedy follows two men desperate to get home for Thanksgiving after their plane is cancelled due to weather. This is as good of

a film as The Christmas Story and should be on as well for 24 hours during the Thanksgiving weekend, similar to the 24-hour feed that The Christmas Story receives during Christmas on TBS. Thank goodness for good ole Charlie Brown and his gang for delivering us some Thanksgiving cheer, even though the episode is more than 40 years old. I do not know why Thanksgiving is getting the shaft the last few years. A few years ago, I tried to get Thanksgiving paper goods about a week before Thanksgiving. None to be found, but the Christmas aisles were abundant. Each year, I stock up early on fall paper goods. I always get my Halloween candy on the day of Halloween so I do not eat it all before the children come knocking. This year I got the last of it and already next to the leftover candy was Christmas candy!! Come on, Duane

Reade. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I do not have to purchase gifts, wrap gifts and organize which gifts are going to which house, let alone what to buy that picky relative, or what to get the man who has everything: my dad. I honestly have no idea what to get him this year. He has an iPhone 6 and has learned to Google. So while we have a few weeks before Thanksgiving, let us enjoy the calm before the storm: Christmas. The Healing Power of Music On Sunday, Music That Heals, an organization I am affiliated with, hosted a concert at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club. The concert was to bring awareness in our community to the beneficial work that each and every musician in this program does to promote healing power to ill children and adults. There are countless stories that attest to the fact that music uplifts the spirit, the mood, the very essence of a person. The professional musicians in the program share their talents in sometimes set-

tings that are probably difficult to bear, like hospice units and burn centers, and their intention of bringing joy in the moment is remarkable. They are performing for the moment to give people who are suffering a chance to engage their senses of hearing and sight, and forget about what is really going on. It is a chance to be in a moment of joy, listening to the beautiful sounds instruments emit and voices that sing from the heart. Studies show that pleasing music lowers the stress hor-

mone, not surprising, as we feel better when we have and have had a musical experience. And decreasing stress increases the possibility of good health—in whatever way: for someone whose body is failing, maybe of a peaceful mind and a joyful heart. That is what the musicians in the Music That Heals program do — they provide the gift of healing through the power of music. I realized that people in our community came yesterday to the concert for the very same reason: to engage in their senses, forget about what is going on in life for a little while and enjoy the sounds, the stories, the voices, the laughter. And that lift up even for a little while is healing because it gives us space to not focus on difficulties, tasks, duties, anything else, but to be in the moment allowing the music to enter our bodies, minds and hearts. More than recorded music, listening to live performances are experiences shared with others—being in

the same place in unity, being there for the same purpose, to enjoy the experience. So being in community and listening to music has a powerful, positive, inner, long-lasting effect if we remember the experience over and over again, bringing to mind how it made us feel and re-joying in the memory. Oh, Canada! By Lou Pastina

What do you do when there is a caravan heading through Mexico toward the United States? Go to Canada of course. While Montreal and Quebec City rightfully get a lot more travel attention, Toronto should be considered for a quick, long weekend trip. The vibe is very different from its French sister cities, as Toronto is more firmly rooted in its English past. The first thing to consider is that Toronto is only an hour’s flight away. And while you do need a passport or enhanced driver’s license to get past customs, it is a pretty easy process. Even easier if you have Global Entry, a kind of TSA pre-check for international flights. Air Canada is a good option to get there and back, but be forewarned, they fly out of LaGuardia Airport and that place is still a construction mess. When you get into Toronto, getting to downtown takes about 40 minutes by cab. The good news is once you are there, the exchange rate is highly in your favor, with each American dollar worth about 1.25 in Canadian dollars. A pretty good discount!

Toronto is broken up into highly distinctive neighborhoods, such as Chinatown, Koreatown, Little Italy, Greek Town, and Cabbage Town. I couldn’t figure out the Cabbage Town reference, until I looked it up: that’s where the Tory British put the Irish! But the streets are safe and highly walkable, and in late October and early November, those streets are littered with fall leaves. What kind of leaves? Well, maple leaves of course! Toronto is home to several sports franchises, such as the baseball Blue Jays, the hockey Maple Leafs, and the basketball Raptors. In addition, Toronto is home to the Canadian version of Second City Comedy which spawned such talents as Martin Short, Eugene Levy and John Candy to name a few. A visit to the city is not complete without catching a show there. Toronto is also a big music city and hosts various music festivals during the summer. It also has some of the finest intimate jazz clubs anywhere. One in particular I can recommend is N’Awlins in the Entertainment District, a cozy place with New Orleans style food and great jazz, blues

I’m sure many parents of special needs children would agree, meeting other parents with similar challenges, feels like seeing an extended member of your family, purely bonded through a spirit of commonality. One of my “sisters” is born-and-bred Rockawayite, Patricia Harvey, affectionately known as Pat. I’ve known Pat for years, before I even gave birth to my now 10-year-old daughter on the autism spectrum. From tackling challenges with schooling, bussing, services; and understanding your rights as a parent of a special needs child — Pat is a deep well of information, and rightfully so because her son, Jason, is 24 years old and to put it mildly, she’s been through hell and back. KLA: Pat, how many children do you have? PH: Five. Nicole is 35 years old; Anthony, 25; Jason, 24; Andrew, 20 and Jeanette, 17. They used to call Anthony and Jason Irish twins because they are just a year apart. KLA: How did Jason’s siblings understand his autism? PH: In the beginning it was very hard for them, but they all were very protective of him and still are. My younger son used to get into fights with kids who made fun of Jason. They knew he was different, but not less, and made sure to let others know the same. I didn’t treat Jason any differently from them. They are all my kids, and I love them equally. KLA: What behaviors did Jason show that made you suspect something was different? PH: He went from being a happy child to almost kind of distant. I saw a gradual change with his facial expressions, eye contact, and of course loss of words. I already had two children, and intuitively knew that something was different. He

was diagnosed with autism at 18 months. KLA: What were your experiences like then with doctors? PH: It was a horror show. I took him to see this developmental specialist, who said Jason was deaf and mentally retarded. You can imagine my reaction. Let’s say, some explicits were flying. I knew my son was not deaf. It had to be something else. Finally, after seeing several doctors, one confirmed what I suspected — autism. He put him on a variety of medications. I didn’t see any improvements, just side affects. Some made him cry, have angry outbursts, depressed; so I took him off. When I told the doctor about my decision to take him off the medications, he had the nerve to ask me, ‘What are you looking for? A miracle cure?’ I just glared at him and left. The problem is when they are that young, no one wants to commit themselves. KLA: Wow! I could relate. What about schooling? PH: Preschool through NYC’s Early Intervention program was great. When they’re little, everyone is throwing services at your child. At IEP meetings, I demanded impartial hearings. Went to other agencies like the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD), who are always a huge help. Once the DOE gets a call from them, heads start spinning. KLA: And what about busing? PH: Again, MOPD never disappoints. One time, they took Jason and other kids from Rockaway off the school bus route for a week! I called MOPD, who conferenced me in a call with

And every time I read anything, I get overwhelmed that I'm so messed up and I'll never be able to overcome all my stuck places. What do you think I should read or do?
