The Little North Pole is back! On Sunday, December 8, tradition continued as crowds filled Neponsit Avenue for the big show leading to the lighting of Rockaway’s most decked out holiday home—The Little North Pole. Coming off last year’s win on ABC’s “The Great Christmas Light Fight,” this year’s lighting of Joe Mure’s Little North Pole was even more special. As the countdown began down from 10 and the home was illuminated at the end of the night, spectators were greeted by a new addition to the home. As Elvis’ “Here Comes Santa Claus” played, lights all over the home danced to the tune of the song, giving it that extra special touch and even more of a reason for all to be dazzled by the intricate display. The new feature was made possible with some help from local resident, John Reinhardt. Rainy weather since the lighting has caused some
delays, but passersby will soon be able to check out this feature each night at the home. The house will play the music, but
those cruising by in a car can tune in to 88.1 FM to hear the music, right from the comforts of their heated vehicle. The lighting was bookended by a plethora of entertainment throughout the afternoon and into the evening. The event kicked off with a pre-show that featured song and dance performances by local groups including the P.S. 114 Glee Club, Fazio Dance Center, the Louise Benes Dance Company and more. DJ
later in the evening. Stephanie Iacono and then Seany B. also sang some holiday tunes. The Tap Life Company gave a firsttime Little North Pole performance, tapping to Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Mr. and Mrs. Christmas, Vinny and Ma-

Dani Dante and Domini Monroe, both upand-coming singers, dazzled on stage with their original music and Christmas tunes. Angelo Venuto sang some classics like “Blue Christmas.” After the house was lit, Lucas Prata gave a holiday rendition of his radio hit, “And She Said.” Topping off the evening was ‘80s disco duo, Lime, which got the crowd pumped before the biggest celebrity of all arrived—Santa Claus. Santa Claus capped the evening by providing toys to every child at the event. Each year, Joe Mure holds The Little North Pole lighting to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. ‘National Parks’ Art Exhibit Brings Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Center Stage By Kami-Leigh Agard
This past Sunday, December 8, Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge’s event space was packed with folks clamoring to see the unveiling of internationally-known NYC-based artist, Jayne Holsinger’s exhibit, “National Parks.” This exhibit was quite the undertaking for Holsinger as it spans her grandfather’s photo-documented travel to national parks throughout all 49 continental United States. Also, what made it even more special, was upon invitation to the Refuge by her friend, Elsie Maio, a Rockaway resident, Holsinger was so enraptured by the Refuge’s wild beauty that she took photographs and added her paintings of them to her “National Parks” series. In one of her paintings, you feel the movement of the wind blowing, the cragginess of the
terrain, the loneliness, yet the quiet beauty of the bay’s edge at the Refuge. The colors are so profound that you can feel the dreariness of the day, but still can’t help being drawn in to the mysteries it holds. Holsinger, a professor at Montclair State University in New Jersey and Borough Manhattan Community College, is originally from an Anabaptist community in Mishawaka, Indiana. She paints primarily in oils and gouache mediums and uses photographic references as a starting point. She is known

for her painted compositions of photos characterized by their Midwest American content. Holsinger is the recipient of numerous grants, fellowships and awards, including from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Adolph and the Esther Gottlieb Foundation. Amongst numerous national and international exhibitions, her work has been shown in Zurich, Berlin, Istanbul, and various cities across the U.S. The prestigious artist’s work has even been reviewed and reproduced in The New York Times, Flash Art online (Milan), Harper’s Magazine, and Forbes. However, despite her impressive CV and worldwide travels, Holsinger said coming to the Refuge truly inspired her work and connection with nature on another level. “I was impressed by how Elsie described the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge (JBWR) as her
go-to place of peace,” Holsinger said. “Plus the ferry ride from Manhattan to Rockaway was something I enjoyed immensely. So I decided to make it a point to go out and visit Elsie, and go with her to the Refuge. And while I was there, I saw the exhibition space, and thought it was a wonderful way to share the ‘National Parks’ series. It was a very strong match, and I happened to get a very generous grant from BMCC that covered the framing, shipping and insuring the collectors’ pieces. “It was a long-time running series, and I had never really brought it all together. So this has been fabulous for me because I got to bring all the work, and have it seen. I just adored the exhibit opening. There was amazing energy, not least of which were the people speaking about the water, which just Continued on page 7

NATIONAL PARKS Continued from Page 6 overall made having the series at the Refuge even more purposeful because it really highlights our stewardship of nature.” Maio and Holsinger have been close friends since 1985. Maio said the Refuge is what drove her to move to Rockaway, and she was determined to get her friend to see it for herself. “I discovered the Wildlife Refuge when I was attending an exhibit by an arts professor from Pratt University. He used wood blocks to make pamphlets in an original typeset about the community of Broad Channel, its challenges, its history and tenuous future. These pamphlets were such a beautiful work of art. So, I said to myself, ‘This is my soul, my heart, my body, where I am so happy to be because the art is inspiring me, but I’m in the middle of the wilderness, which my heart was yearning for when I lived in the Upper West Side and Long Island City. So, once I discovered that
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2019 gem, I began exploring Rockaway, and moved here in 2017. I never forget the day I was closing on an apartment here, I looked at the ocean, and saw two whales. It was like they were beckoning me to stay, and stay I did. “So I told Jayne about the Refuge and said to her, 'You should have a show at the JBWR and exhibit your ‘National Parks’ series. Her paintings poignantly showed how her grandparents engaged with the wilderness. Art is access to our souls, just like the wilderness, and that’s what I love about the Refuge, and what excited me to bring Jayne’s work here.” When asked what her experience was like, taking photos and doing paintings of the Refuge and the bay, Holsinger shared, “I went out to the bay on a wild, windy and rainy day. I was the only person out there, and I took images. It was so cold that my camera kept turning off. I was immersed in that experience so much that the paintings I did of the photographs are almost expressionist in
terms of the wind and the brush strokes. They feel very different from the other paintings in the series which were done from photographs my grandfather took from his travels to national parks across the country.” Maio shared that Holsinger’s “National Parks” showing is even more special because of the collectors who agreed to loan the paintings to the exhibit. “It’s amazing because some of the paintings are collectors’ pieces, who literally took them off their walls and loaned them
Page 7 to her, just for the exhibit. Jayne went through a lot of trouble to make this happen. “This is also a great opportunity for schools to bring their students and learn about her technique of gouache painting, while appreciating our national parks. Like Jayne said, ‘With this exhibit, my goal was to bring urban dwellers into urban national parks so they too can connect as a community around conservation.’ So, I invite everyone to take her paintings and go for a walk. Let your soul be touched and let your whole body feel it. Walk out there on that gravel path,” Maio said. “National Parks” is running at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge (175-10 Cross Bay Blvd, Broad Channel) until February 10, Wednesdays though Sundays, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For further info, visit: nps.gov/gate/ planyourvisit/index.htm or call 718-318-4340. ***** Advertiser alert : we have early, early deadlines the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s. We’re publishing and delivering as usual on Thursday (December 26 and January 2) but all ads must be in by MONDAY (December 23 and December 30) for those weeks and must be in by NOON. ***** The Police Commissioner, the top guy, announced that it was an accident. We’re talking about the razor blade that fell into a cop’s sandwich at Bon Appetit, the deli on Beach 129th Street. Some people on Facebook weren’t convinced and maintained it was a malicious act. Come on, it was an accident. If this were a crime, it wouldn’t take a detective to figure out
who did it. But, ok, we won’t blame anyone for peeking inside a sandwich from now on. ***** Chuck Schumer is busy in Washington these days, but he gets back and forth to New York enough that he’s often reminded how planes have become cattle cars. He’s pushing the FAA to study whether to mandate airlines to provide more leg room and seat width for the flying public. Anybody who has flown recently wouldn’t argue with this. While you’re at it, Chuck, ask them why when you fly in the emergency row, they ask you if you will assist in an emergency and then charge you extra for the privilege? The FAA considers emergency rows a safety issue with various requirements but the airlines see these as premium seats. They get you anyway they can. ***** If you were wondering what all the mess was in Far Rockaway on Beach 19th Street and Seagirt Boulevard on
Tuesday, it was a water main break. Many residents and businesses had to deal with very low water pressure. If you were wondering why at least a half dozen cop cars were speeding along Beach Channel in Rockaway Park on Tuesday, they were rushing to a “shots fired” call on Beach 123rd Street, only to find out it was a car backfiring. ***** Many people have driven past Beach Channel and Beach 141st Street assuming that was park land in front of some homes that face Cronston Avenue. There’s now a green construction fence and that’s a likely sign that new houses will go up on the lot that is approximately 240 x 100. It’s zoned for one-family homes, so we think there’s just room for two. There is other property in the area that is owned by the National Park Service, but they’re not even aware (until we told them). Parcels around Beach 146th
The Rockaway Times through Beach 149th along Beach Channel are listed on City tax maps as belonging to NPS. When we asked them about those lots, they claimed they don’t own property past Beach 149th. Well, NPS is wrong or the City tax map is wrong. ***** Well, Classics To Go is gone. The food truck at 114-04 Beach Channel Drive probably got started too late in the year to make a go of it. Too bad. The double burgers, hot dogs, tacos, and sausage and peppers sold at 1985 prices were a big hit with its small but loyal following. We hear the truck is just rolling across the street to the Farmers Market on Beach 116th and BCD, but we don’t know if the menu is making the trip. ***** The Santa Suit Run is Saturday. Sign up, get a red suit, and walk or run for fun. Registration takes place at Gliders or online. Head to Rockapulcorun.com for more info or to register.

Cuomo Could Dump on Jamaica Bay Governor Andrew Cuomo may make a surprising decision about a bill that pertains to dumping potential toxic material in Jamaica Bay. Assembly Bill A5767A/ Senate Bill S42165 presented by Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato and State Senator Joe Addabbo, had no problem passing both the Assembly and Senate, with unanimous support. However, the bill that pertains to the filling of borrow pits in Jamaica Bay, now on Governor Cuomo’s desk, may get shot down by Cuomo. According to Dan Mundy of the Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers, the bill would concern dumping of materials such as sediment found around cruise terminals in New York Harbor, into deep pockets of Jamaica Bay, particularly around Far Rockaway. These currently-protected areas have been flourishing with increased wildlife for several years, and experts fear dumping of toxic material could do severe harm. The bill gained support from
the local community board and Cuomo’s office was flooded with calls of support, however Sen. Addabbo recently got word that the governor may veto the bill. According to Mundy, the governor’s office has taken issue with some of the language of the bill. Particularly, certain lines saying that the dumping of fill will only be permitted if the proposed materials are tested, comply with ocean dumping criteria and are found to contain no unacceptable toxicity levels. As of now, CB14 has written a follow-up letter to Governor Cuomo to not veto the bill. The public can also urge Cuomo to sign the bill by contacting his office at 518-474-8390 or governor.ny.gov/content/governor-contact-form If Cuomo does veto the bill, Mundy says, the fight isn’t over. They plan to reintroduce the bill next year, but time is of the essence as the temporary protections are set to expire next year.

Community Board 14 December Meeting Recap By Marina Cregan
As 2019 concludes, Community Board 14 (CB14) held its final meeting on Tuesday, December 10 at 7:15 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus on Beach 90th Street. There was a strong turnout of concerned Rockaway residents, eager to hear news and updates regarding Education, Transportation, Parks and Public Safety, as well as other issues. CB14 District Manager, Jonathan Gaska, started the meeting by reading his letter to Mayor de Blasio, requested by the Board in October, advocating for a Gifted and Talented School on the east end. Gaska said CB14 had conducted a review, having multiple conversations with parents. It was concluded that although some progress has been made, much more needs to be done to improve academics. The Board requested a Magnet Middle High School to be built. Further, due to coming construction, they believe that two new schools need to be created to accommodate

over 1,000 students in the 11691 and 11692 zip codes. CB14 concluded that schools are already over capacity. Before opening the floor to public speaking, CB14 Chair Dolores Orr, expressed her disappointment with the Parks Department. She said the Board had requested, but had no record of receiving, previous Requests for Proposals (RFPs) regarding boardwalk concessions before Parks issued a new one this fall. And the Board remains in the dark regarding 2020 plans. Eleven Rockaway residents signed up to speak when the floor opened, all discussing is-

Karla Burac, a resident from Beach 61st Street, called attention to the installed speedhumps, “not speed-bumps, and street conversion between Beach 61st and 62nd Street. Burac expressed her gratitude for CB14’s support for Beach 61st Street residents, however, these newly-installed speed-humps are just not high enough, she asserted. According to Mundy, the only way to get these speedbumps raised are if they are close to a school, a playground, or hospital. She said the humps are one block away from a playground, yet nothing has been done. After the floor was closed to the public, board member Jose Velez discussed the results of the Nominating Committee, stating that all of the people currently serving on the Board wish to stay and there were no objections. So, for the upcoming election,
which will be held in January 2020, CB14 will be keeping their current slate for the Board. Harold Paez, of the Education Committee, gave updates regarding the Committee’s November 13 meeting. Paez applauded the ribbon-cutting ceremony of Far Rockaway High School’s new library, which expanded its facility with all new furniture and brand new computers. Yet again, another step in the right direction for the east end’s education system. Next up was Christopher Tedesco speaking on behalf of the Transportation Committee, which seemed to stir up the most discussion of the night. Tedesco gave a brief update on the creation of the Queens Link, which would give Rockaway residents more accessible ways to travel into Manhattan. Instead of connecting the Queens Link to LIRR, Tedesco stated that the committee thinks it’s best to connect the Link to NYC Transit, benefiting Continued on page 12

residents with the farthest commute. He also discussed the outcome of the pilot Mott Avenue Ferry Shuttle Bus that ran this past summer. On some days, no riders took the free shuttle service, and because it was just a pilot program, these results were just not enough to keep its funding. Regarding the A train, Tedesco revealed that with the installation of the new R179 subway cars, each car has exactly 24 seats less than older trains, leaving 196 less seats for residents. This bit of news outraged some, and community members motioned for CB14
The Rockaway Times to write a letter, pleading to increase the number of A trains, in hopes of making commuting somewhat easier for commuters. Last on the agenda, Velez took the floor again, speaking on behalf of the Parks and Public Safety Committee. He discussed the progress on the Nameoke Park capital project on Beach 20th Street. "Oh, and what a great park it will be," Velez enthused. He said there will be 29 benches, play areas for children ages 2-5 and 5-12, climbing rock elements, adult fitness stations, and most importantly—a comfort station. Although a comfort station drastically increases the budget (raising the total budget to $10 million), Velez expressed how important the station is in keeping the park clean and child-friendly. The next meeting of the Community Board will occur on Tuesday, January 14. For more information, contact the main office through email: cbrock14@ nyc.rr.com or by phone: 718-4717300.

SCHOOL + KARATE = SUCCESS Confidence is not something we are born with... it is something that we learn. It was a blessed evening. Rain threatened to pour on the night of St. Francis de Sales’ lighting and blessing of the trees in the Prayer Garden on Tuesday, December 10, but in a Christmas miracle, the rain held off and made for a lovely evening to light more than 100 trees and angels. The evening began with carols played on speakers as crowds of local families and children gathered around the prayer garden on Beach 129th Street. Father Bill Sweeney and Father Jim Cunningham then led everyone in prayer as they blessed the trees that contain names of loved ones who have passed away or are struggling. Father Bill then called up Siobhan O’Sullivan and her friends to the front, so O’Sullivan could press the button to turn on the lights. Father Bill
explained that O’Sullivan was picked as she has been battling cancer. As a way to welcome her back to school, SFDS picked her to light the trees as an example of her courage and strength through her battle. Following the lighting, all were invited to the SFDS gym, where guests were treated to cookies, hot chocolate, DJ music and a very special appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus, who went around taking pictures with all of the children. Officer Support Dear Officer Vinitsky: (Regarding Rockaway Times, 12-5-19) Today, I had the disconcerting experience reading of your attack by a prisoner and subsequent hospitalization for the past few years. As uncomfortable as it was to read, there was a brighter side to see the response of the NYPD officers and many others in supporting you during this most difficult time of your life. Most of all, it was uplifting to see how you are handling the situation with profound strength of character and a sense of great faith and hope. You are surely an extraordinary example to others and, perhaps, a help to some in similar circumstances to bear their physical burdens as well.
I just want to offer my support and assurance of my prayers and thank you for your outstanding, splendid service to the citizens of New York. Also would like to thank Ms. Katie McFadden for her article on your plight and courage as published in THE ROCKAWAY TIMES. During this pre-Christmas season, may I offer one of my favorite prayers: May the Lord bless you and keep you. May he let His face shine upon you and be merciful to you. May the Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace. With great admiration. Brother Robert Falcone, CSC Jumping the Gun Dear Editor: I am appalled by some of the immediate reactions online to the news of a cop finding a razor blade in his sandwich from Bon Appetit. Like myself, Rockaway is clearly a place that supports law enforcement. A place where in every other home, it seems
is a cop that lives there, protecting it. There’s no doubt that we love and respect law enforcement. But we’re also a neighborhood that usually supports local business and it’s that very ‘mom and pop’ characteristic of our local businesses that contributes to what makes Rockaway, Rockaway. So I was shocked when so many people, instead of waiting for the facts, jumped to conclusions and assumed that this was an attempted murder on a police officer. Some brought out their torches and pitchforks and immediately called for Bon Appetit to be shut down, for the person that did this to face the ultimate punishment—death, and that someone should even burn the deli to the ground. Fortunately, within 24 hours, it was later revealed by the NYPD Commissioner himself, that this whole thing was an accident and there was no intentional harm towards a cop. I hope this whole incident serves as a lesson to those to
Page 15 not jump to conclusions and make comments on something that they may later regret. Sadly, this news of it being an accident came out and still, some are not convinced, with some continuing to call it bulls***. Why in the world would the commissioner of the NYPD come out and call this an accident, after their own people, the NYPD, reviewed footage and determined that this wasn’t intentional? If that is not enough for you to accept it as truth, I don’t know what will convince you. I am glad that the officer will recover and hope that Bon Appetit will too. As we enter the slow season for all local businesses, this is going to be a tough blow, no doubt. I do hope that most people come to their senses and continue to support this neighborhood deli that has served this community, including our law enforcement, for decades... The last thing we want to see is it be replaced by yet another nail salon. Jim Camden

Rockaway’s Craftiest: MEET ROOTS MAN WILLIAM FRANCIS OF WILLDERNESS YARD RT: What was your inspiration to get into the field of root medicine? WF: My mother and her sisters were always into plants. That, and always having a sincere fascination with the natural world and the beauty of nature. I’ve always been drawn to it.
By Kami-Leigh Agard In this Rockaway Times series, we spotlight the eclectic band of crafty artists living on the peninsula. These individuals stand out not just because of their creativity and indisputable talent, but the oxygen fueling the passion behind their work—living and breathing in Rockaway. We hope this series gives readers the incentive to support these local artisans, who invest their soul, time and energy in producing works of art that reflect what makes our peninsula an unparalleled place to call home. “Where there’s a ‘Will,’ there’s a way,” and local William Francis truly embodies that old English proverb as he determinedly brought his love for the forest and its medicinal mysteries to not just his hometown Rockaway, but throughout NYC’s five boroughs. In the following
Q&A, Francis shares how his passion for nature and healing others led him to create holistic medicine brand, Willderness Yard. RT: How long have you lived in Rockaway? WF: My family moved here from Marine Park, Brooklyn in 1987, when I was about three years old. I attended St. Francis de Sales, and finished high school upstate in Ithaca, NY.
RT: So when did you get the idea to start making your own products out of medicinal plants for healing purposes? WF: Fifteen years ago, I was diagnosed with Lyme disease, and around the same time, my sister was going through multiple sclerosis (MS), and on top of that, my father had kidney failure. So, it was a trifecta of all of us having serious diseases and sicknesses. I was working with a medicine man upstate, who taught me about the healing properties of mushrooms. So, I wanted to take what I learned from the forest and bring it
to the city to help family and friends. RT: So you learned handson in the open, as opposed to a school room. Do you think that impacted your learning curve? WF: Definitely. The medicine man was Native American, but also had descent to a tribe in Africa. He would take me out and identify plants. I was privileged to have an authentic teacher-disciple type of learning. A lot of people go to school for this, but I learned out in nature, which is priceless because a book could only tell you so much. RT: How many years have you been studying the medicinal qualities of plants? WF: Specifically with chaga mushrooms, I’ve been studying for at least 10 years. Before I got into mushrooms, I was studying plants like herbs, roots and flowers, but I Continued on page 17

NYPD Calls Razor Blade Sandwich Accidental By Katie McFadden
The cheddar wasn’t the only thing that was sharp in a cop’s sandwich. An extra topping of a razor blade was found to be a big oops. On Thursday, December 5, at around 4:30 p.m., an NYPD police officer for the Critical Response Command bit into a philly cheesesteak sandwich and was surprised by a sharp pain in his mouth. That pain was caused by a razor blade found within the sandwich, which he had purchased from Bon Appetit on Beach 129th Street. According to the NYPD, the officer was on duty at the time, but was in plainclothes. The officer, who has 24 years on the job, was taken to Nassau Community Medical Center for minor cuts and was later released on Thursday. Word quickly spread around social media, especially around law enforcement pages, and by Friday, December 6, the news broke among local and national news sources. In response, many took to social media and
Bon Appetit’s review sites like Google and Yelp to express their thoughts about how such an act must have had malicious intent. However, within 24 hours, the NYPD found otherwise. The razor found in the officer’s sandwich landed there unintentionally. “After a thorough investigation by @NYPDDetectives it’s been determined that the razor incident was indeed an accident-thankfully our officer or another customer wasn’t seriously injured. Appropriate agencies have been notified for follow up to ensure this never happens again,” NYPD Commissioner Dermot O’Shea wrote on Twitter on the morning of Saturday, December 7. The follow-up had a much different tone than O’Shea’s original accusatory response to the report on December 6. “The NYPD has ZERO tolerance for acts of violence against our police officers…A full investigation into this abhorrent act is underway,” he wrote. On Friday, December 6, those
at Bon Appetit were surprised by the news. By the afternoon, they released a statement saying they were “deeply concerned” by the incident and were fully cooperating with police by letting them review surveillance footage from within the deli. That surveillance footage, along with interviews with the deli staff and the police officer involved, led NYPD to determine that this wasn’t an act of violence, but a mistake. In a follow-up call to the NYPD, a spokesperson said they believe construction was taking place at the deli and razor blades were left behind. “We reviewed the video and saw that it was not anything intentional,” the spokesperson said. In an earlier statement to NBC, Bon Appetit, which has never had any previously reported issues, had said, "We use a variety of tools to prepare our food, but none should ever be found in any food item meant for customer consumption." On Tuesday, December 10, The Rockaway Times returned to Bon Appetit to request further
explanation, but the owner was not available for comment. As part of Bon Appetit’s earlier statement to NBC, management offered an apology for the incident. "In our experience, the NYPD officers of the 100th and 101st precincts have been an exemplary example of professionalism and service to not only our business but to our local community in the Rockaways, Queens, and New York City at large," the statement continued. "If given the opportunity, the management of Bon Appetit would like to personally apologize to the officer and the rest of the local law enforcement community."

Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Diet Trends An unhealthy diet is a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases globally, including Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain types of cancer. In the U.S, poor diet was estimated to be the leading cause of death and the third leading cause of disability-adjusted life-years lost. As a result, evaluating the overall trends in diet is important to identifying challenges and opportunities for improving the diet of all U.S. adults. The calorie needs of the human body are mainly supplied by three dietary macronutrients: carbohydrate, fat, and protein. Changes in the economy, nutrition-related policies, and food processing methods can affect the nutrient
composition and diet quality at the population level. Recently, the results of nine cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which examined trends in the U.S. diet from 1999 to 2016, were published. The survey found that from 1999 to 2016, the macronutrient composition of the diet of U.S. adults improved. It found that previously observed trends in the U.S. diet from 1971 to 2000 were substantially reversed. If you are old enough to remember the years from 1971 to 2000, you might recall the emphasis on reducing dietary fat. Many products were marketed as “low-fat” or “no fat.” If you decrease the level of one
The Rockaway Times
macronutrient, you must increase the level of another one. From 1971 to 2000, fat consumption was lowered while carbohydrate consumption (refined grains and sugars) increased. That unhealthy trend was reversed from 2000 to 2016 as the survey found that the macronutrient composition in U.S. diets improved. It found declines in low-quality carbohydrates (mostly added sugars) and increases in high-quality carbohydrates (mostly whole grains), plant proteins (whole grains and nuts), and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Unfortunately, the proportions of energy from low-quality carbohydrates remained higher than recommended as did the consumption of saturated fats. After 2000, shifts in scientific evidence and dietary recommendations promoted the benefits of healthy fats and plant sources of protein, and the harms of low-quality carbohydrates like added sugars and refined, or white, rice and flour. In addition, the growing popularity of specific diet patterns like Atkins, paleo, and vegan/vegetarian may have contributed to the observed positive dietary trends.
Dietary challenges remain, however. U.S. adults still consume too much low-quality carbohydrates (refined grains, fruit juices and sodas, and potatoes). Also, protein intake is still derived from animal foods such as unprocessed red meat and processed meats as opposed to heathier seafood and plant sources. Previous studies have shown that red meat and processed meat are associated with poorer health outcomes. Plus, the consumption of saturated fats remains above the recommended level of 10 percent of energy intake. Finally, U.S. adults with low income or low educational attainment did not show the overall improvement in diet that the survey found. If you are looking for a healthy diet to follow, I recommend that you research the Mediterranean diet. It has all the positives that this survey found without the negatives. It is high in seafood, whole grains, nuts, seeds, veggies, olive oil, and legumes, and has low saturated fat and no red or processed meats. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes. com.

HAPPINESS IS AN INSIDE JOB! I recently caught up with an old friend who received this (title of this column) gift of wisdom from a “medium” she consults from time to time. We laughed about it and then discussed how we have each come to realize how very true it is. We clarified that we weren’t talking about the fleeting happiness moments such as eating a favorite flavor of ice cream or slipping on a new pair of shoes or playing with a
baby or anything that brings a smile to our faces, but rather the sustaining inner feeling of pure joy that is integral to life. I have come to know that happiness is a feeling of being deeply satisfied or content. Inner “satisfaction” comes from a calm mind and a compassionate heart, that is, a heart that softens to our own difficulties, a heart that feels another’s hardship, a heart that leaps to offer help in any
form. How do we cultivate this inner sense of happiness or satisfaction? In my journey, I have found that by finding my way of being compassionate and practicing loving-kindness to myself, an opening or expansion happened—a light of happiness that is always there, a satisfying feeling that is always there, despite what unpleasant life things happen. It is almost like a pie crust: you can put whatever filling to create whatever life you want to live, but the base is what keeps it together. The base is what makes it whole. And the quality of that base flavors or colors what it is filled with, so if that base is pure sustainable joy cultivated by kindness and compassion, the filling— life—takes on these attributes. How do we make the pie crust? By going inside, contemplating, practicing compassion for yourself, for others, for all life forms. Seeing your world in a different way: not made up of things to get, people to connect with for person-
Page 29 al gain, everything out there, but rather, setting your sights inward to find the place of inner peace and happiness. When you experience this for a period of time, you will notice that feeling of contentment that Helen was talking about in last week’s column. And when we feel contentment, accepting what is at this moment in time, whatever it may be, even in sickness or ill feelings, a path opens that may bring about a shift in perspective and/or change for the better. We are at this state at this moment for many reasons—many different things got us to this moment in time. Being content in this moment, being accepting of this moment eases tensions and allows for movement. Compassion and contentment are accessories to “happiness is an inside job!” May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you be compassionate. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

While conducting an interview for the newspaper this week, local resident Elsie Maio, mentioned Japanese author Masaru Emoto, known for his claims that human consciousness has an effect on the molecular structure of water. After researching Emoto, I was intrigued. He believed that water takes on the resonance of the energy in which is directed at it. Through studies, he concluded that if water has positive
energy directed at it, it can form beautiful and intricate crystals, and conversely, if water has negative energy directed at it, the crystals come out broken, and discolored, their uniformness altered and tarnished. As Elsie and I were talking, my 11-year-old daughter with autism immediately came to mind. Soanirina loves water. She has a sneaky habit of preContinued on page 31

LIFE WITH OUR “ARTISTIC” CHILD Continued from Page 30 tending to need to use the toilet, but coyly is devising a way to drink from the restroom’s faucet. Whether at school or at home, or even on a random excursion to a restaurant, the minute you get distracted, she’s running to the bathroom and is at the faucet. It drives us crazy, and not just because of hearing the tap running and the water just flowing: (Hello! Water bill!), but her determination to greedily drink from a well of NYC tap water. After scolding her, she just cheekily laughs and runs off. And that’s the routine, all afternoon when she comes home from school, and on the weekend. Even her school’s teachers have sent home notes about her strong craving to just drink from the tap. However, the more we discourage her, the more she’s determined to poke her tiny mouth under the pipe, lap-
ping up the water like a camel in serious thirst. However, after speaking to Elsie today and researching Emoto, I began to think. Perhaps, our Soa is thirsting for something else. Positive hydration. Positive energy. Positive re-enforcement. Positive relationships. Folks, we all crave these things, not just as parents, friends, family—but humans in the flesh. Caregivers, we knock every door down to help our children. Sometimes the daily grind, trying to understand autism and cope, are hard. However, the beautiful thing is like water, without our children, we couldn’t survive. We need to drink from their special well. My daughter is the reason I jump out of my bed every day. She is my water, my hydration. Like Elsie said, “The human body is mostly made up of water. We are like the Earth.” According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGA), about 71% of the Earth's surface is water-covered, and as for us humans,
Page 31
up to 60% of our bodies is water. And interesting enough, Soa’s reservoir of thirst is hydrating my body, my soul, my heart. Whether Emoto was onto something or not, I believe water, just like our children, does have a mind of its own, and possesses an innate thirst to exhibit its beauty and purpose. Just think of the Atlantic Ocean and Jamaica Bay, our beautiful Rockaway peninsula and Broad Channel are blessed to be neighbors with. Yes, we’ve seen the confusion that water can hurl, however, there is a beauty in its depth that’s beyond our understanding. Yet we cannot, help but be in awe, and gulp down its depth of the unknown, not unlike our children. So yes, my Soa keep drinking. Just please, keep in mind the water bill! Happy Holidays everyone!

Oh Brooklyn, Oh Brooklyn! By Lou Pastina
A recent meeting brought me to downtown Brooklyn, and if you have to ask where that is, then you don’t know Brooklyn. I took the opportunity to walk over to the Dumbo section, which is just north of the Brooklyn Bridge and right on the water. This area has gone through a revival of late and is home to St. Ann's Warehouse, which in avant-garde theater. Right next door to the theater is Time-Out
Magazine’s new addition, a five-story refurbished, pre-civil war coffee warehouse that now houses restaurants, bars and shops. The place keeps the original vibe and has spectacular views of Manhattan. Down below are Brooklyn Bridge Park, which includes a large glass enclosed merry-go-round, cultivated walking paths and open access to the East River. In a word, it is special. As you walk south, away from Brooklyn Bridge Park, you walk grass, trees and bushes. Further still, the park becomes a mecca for basketball, soccer, bike riding and joggers. You can walk all the way to the foot of Atlantic Avenue, where yet another NYC ferry stop awaits you. If you take the opportunity to walk up Atlantic Avenue, go to Hicks Street and make a left, and then another left at State Street ‘til you come to Willow Street, then go right. You will feel like you have entered another century, and not last century but two centuries ago. This area has the most pre-civil war homes around and will take your breath away. When you get to the dead end, make a right back to Hicks. You will walk past Grace Church, if it’s open, take a peek inside, it’s beautiful; in fact, on this walk, if you see any open church, go in, they are all worth the look. When you get to Joralemon Street, go left to Willow again then right and take Willow all the way. Most people will tell you to walk the promenade, which overlooks the bay and city, but I find the homes along Willow more interesting. Orange Street has Plymouth Church, home to the underground railroad during the Civil

lyn’s oldest and where you can find wooden houses built prior to 1820. You will also notice in this area that streets are named after fruits. Legend has it that the Middagh family didn’t like the original families the streets were named after, so they replaced the street signs with the fruit names. A battle of wills with the city ensued with the Middaghs finally getting their way! No trip to Brooklyn Heights would be complete without a walk down Montague Street, and there you will find St. Ann’s Church, which again if it’s open—definitely go in, you will recognize it instantly from multiple movie and TV shows. You will probably end up at Brooklyn Borough Hall. The courts are right here, and an elevated train once went from here over the bridge right into the Municipal Building on the NYC side. And don’t forget Remsen Street, home to St. Francis College. It’s a lot of walking but well worth it, and best done in late afternoon so you can savor the fantastic sunset over the harbor, through the misty streets of the heights, just as if it were 1817! Enjoy!

Spotted: No Riddle At All
We believe Indiana Jones was searching for a Rockaway Times t-shirt, but that treasure was already being sported by Rockaway resident and writer, Ed Mallon. Ed looks positively dashing as he stands before the Sphinx in Egypt. And this gives us the chance to ask: What is the creature that walks on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon and three in the evening and looks best in a Rockaway Times tee?

FAR ROCK WATER MAIN BREAK CAUSES DISRUPTIONS By Katie McFadden
A water main break on the morning of Tuesday, December 10 impacted homes, traffic, businesses, schools and St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, but the issue was resolved within a few hours. Just before 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato alerted the community about the water main break on Beach 19th Street and Seagirt Blvd. that led to low to no water pressure in area businesses and even the hospital. The NYC Department of Environmental Protection was on the scene, trying to rectify the situation and determine a cause, while Amato, Senator James Sanders Jr. and Councilman Donovan Richards’ office kept up with the situation and provided updates. Some nearby schools, such as Challenge Prep, were impacted and even held an early dismissal as students could not utilize the bathrooms or sinks. Meanwhile, St. John’s Hospital
quickly implemented an emergency plan. “We were well-prepared for a situation like this,” Tom Melillo, director of marketing and strategic planning for St. John’s said. The hospital quickly provided bottled water to its patients and were prepared to send patients to other nearby hospitals, but that action was not necessarily. Before 2 p.m., the water main issue had been repaired and water pressure was back to normal by late afternoon.

Hello Panda Festival Illuminates Citi Field By Katie McFadden
Something big has come to Queens this holiday season. If you’re looking for a fun night out off the peninsula, head to Citi Field this winter. No, the Mets aren’t playing some winter ball, but from now until January 26, next to the stadium you’ll find the largest lantern festival in North America—the Hello Panda Festival. Before the official opening on Friday, December 6, The Rockaway Times got a special sneak peak of this amazing event featuring more than 120 Instagram-worthy lantern displays, including interactive displays, live entertainment, a plethora of international food and beverage
options from 60 vendors curated by The World’s Fare, art, markets and much more. As you walk into the Hello Panda Festival, you’re immediately greeted by a massive, vibrantly colorful welcome sign, complete with a giant panda face, that will have you stopping to take a picture before even walking through the tunnel that will transport you to everything else in store. You’ll then immediately be greeted by a giant hamster figure in red armor, followed by a 60-foot Christmas tree and a Hanukkah display to welcome you to this special holiday light event. We don’t want to give too much away, because you have to see it all for yourself, but there’s a little something for everyone with each display. From an entire under the sea theme complete with a large blue whale that might bring back memories of Rockaway’s Whalemina, a trip back in time to the prehistoric era with a display featuring lifelike dinosaurs, an adventure through an African safari, a magical castle fit

for a queen, and even a play area featuring illuminated swings, see-saws, spin-bikes, and even a ball pit, this festival has fun for all ages. In between checking out the lights, you can also catch live entertainment, art galleries or stop in the food tent to grab a unique bite to eat. "Hello Panda's mission is to not only give New Yorkers and visitors something they've never seen before, but also deliver
an experience they can't find anywhere else," said Winston Wang, General Manager of CPAA North America. "Our festival offers a variety of immersive and social media moments that introduce guests to the artistry of lantern-making while bringing different communities together through food and culture." State Senator Joe Addabbo is pushing for New York state to allow mobile sports betting but also wants safeguards to address the issue of problematic gambling and raise awareness of the addiction. “While mobile sports betting has a multitude of potential benefits for New York State— such as millions of dollars in revenue that can go towards educational funding and bridging the state’s budget shortfall—it can also bring negative connotations with it, like gambling addiction,” Addabbo said. He added that instead of nixing mobile sports betting altogether, it can actually provide new funding to address the issue of problematic gambling and raise awareness of the addiction. Addabbo cited a new report by the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey has shown that the number
of people calling the gambling hot line and reporting a sports-betting problem has more than doubled since June 2018, when New Jersey legalized sports betting. “Gambling addiction is a serious issue and must be included in any discussion regarding gaming in our state,” Addabbo, the chair of the Senate Committee on Racing, Gaming and Wagering, said. “Instead of denying accessible sports betting to those who game responsibly, by continuing to not allow mobile wagering in New York, we need to be highlighting problem gambling and providing options for help for those that need it. The fact that the number of calls to the gambling hotline have increased goes to show that the program is working and those that need the help are actively seeking it out.”

LOCAL COLOR: READERS SEND IN THEIR PIX We might be a little biased, but we think some of the best photographers in the world live in Rockaway. Here are some shots that readers shared with us this week. Send your photos (limit to 2 per week) to mail@rockawaytimes.com and we’ll do our best to print them (space permitting). We do receive more than we can print.
