Rockaway Beach Boulevard is getting some much-needed infrastructure upgrades. On Wednesday, December 12, the NYC DDC, DOT, DEP and Councilman Donovan Richards broke ground on a $24.2 infrastructure project that

will bring improvements to streets, fire protection, water mains and sewers in the area of Rockaway Beach Boulevard from Beach 49th to Beach 59th streets. The project is scheduled to be completed by summer 2021.

AGE IS JUST A NUMBER A 12-year-old walks into a bar. The bartender says, “Kid, what are you doing?” The 12-year-old says, “Tough day. Give me a shot of Jameson.” The bartender can’t believe it. The kid adds, “And leave the bottle.” “Beat it, kid.” “Why? I’m 27.” “Yeah, and I’m a 6’8” Pygmy,” the bartender says. The kid starts moaning about how he just bombed a test, hates his gym teacher and has all these chores at home. “Man, it’s rough. I feel like I’m 27, maybe 28.” The kid shakes his head, “Dog years, man, I’m talking dog years.” The bartender motions with his thumb, outta here. The kid ignores this and climbs onto the barstool. He says his grandfather runs marathons and always says, “Age is just a number. Make it a double.” Now the bartender starts getting a kick out of the kid, the nerve of him. But halfway through a chuckle, the door swings open and three 10-year-olds walk in, chests out like they’re big guys, allowed to be in a bar. The bartender mutters “What the f---” The kids are here for a couple of pints and to discuss the class action suit they’re part of. One kid says he’s a 50-yearold man. “I got it made. I sit on the couch, drink beer, yell at the TV. That’s me.” One of the other kids says he feels

like he’s 21 and just wants to drive for Belle Rock. He’s not gonna let them get away with it, saying he was just 10. “Gonna sue their asses.” He looks at the bartender. “You got a spittoon?” “And what about you?” The bartender says, looking at the third kid. “I saw the Beatles at Shea Stadium.” The bartender slaps the bar and laughs. “No, you didn’t.” The kid says with a straight face. “I believe I was there.” You probably heard about the 69-year-old Dutch guy who went to court to change his age to 49 because he “identifies” as a 49-year-old. Yep, because he felt like a much younger man, he wanted to make it official. The court turned him down. And that’s such bull. Like grandpa says, age is just a number. We can change our name and our gender but not our age? That’s some serious ageism right there. From what I hear, people change their age on Match. com and other dating sites all the time. They put up their high school prom photo when an AARP ID photo would be more accurate. But maybe they feel just young. Maybe they’re still identifying as the disco kings and queens they used to be. I suspect big business is behind the court’s ruling. You wouldn’t need Botox, hair dye, or Viagra. You just declare yourself younger and you’re good to go.

Work would be so much easier at Nicole Frontera Beauty and Spa Rockaway. They could just hand out certificates. You’re twenty years younger. Boom. It’d be like the Scarecrow getting his degree from The Wizard of Oz. Until the courts get this right, there’s gonna be a rampant black market. All those baby boomers who went to 42nd Street for fake IDs and draft cards will be going back there now. I saw a guy who had to be 80 go up some dank stairwell and came out a few minutes later and showed me an ID that said he was 25. “Where’d all the peep shows go? I’m young again, know what I mean?” Back in Rockaway, I heard there was a breakout at an old age home with some octogenarians running after a Mister Softee truck. Meanwhile, the young see the upside of age fluidity. Over at the Sheepshead movie theater, kids were identifying as seniors to get the Seniors Discount. It’s a wacky world; keep

your eye on the courts. That Dutch guy is only the first. People are going to want to change their age for all sorts of reasons. I’m not going to court yet but I’m testing it out. At dinner the other night, the waitress greeted us and asked if we’d like something from the bar. “Just the kids’ menu.” She said ok. This could be good. But kids be careful. You don’t want to be an old white guy, we get blamed for everything.

House Lift Comes Down As The Rockaway Times was going to press, we received reports of a partial house collapse in Roxbury. A home at 72 Hillside Avenue, which was being raised, fell on Wednesday afternoon. Nearby volunteer fire departments, including Point Breeze and the Rockaway Point Fire Department responded to the scene, as well as FDNY. No one was injured as all occupants were out of the home under construction and the neighboring home that the house fell on top of.

The house was found to be in stable condition as emergency crews and members of the NYC Department of Buildings were called to determine how to remove the structure. Despite initial suspicions that the home was part of a Build it Back project, which has seen its fair share of mishaps, neighbors said the home was not under Build it Back and was simply undergoing a lift. On Saturday, December 15, the annual Santa Shuffle takes place. The fun run/walk with everybody wearing a Santa suit kicks off at 11 a.m. on the boardwalk. Even if you’re not a runner, here’s your chance to walk around with a red suit and make people smile. Apparently, there have been random searches going on for a while now. has officially announced that he’s running for Public Advocate. We lost count of how many people are vying for the job, but we think he’s the only Republican. It might make sense to have someone who’s not afraid to bark at the Mayor and Governor. Outgoing Tish James wasn’t too effective calling out those two. He’s not giving up the Council seat unless he wins, of course. You can donate to his run at nycvotes.org ***** Speaking of advocates, did you know there was a Parking Summons Advocate? The NY Post reports that the City pays somebody $120,000 a year to help people fight parking summonses. The story says he’s harder to find than a parking space in Midtown. CORNER HAZARD Dear Editor: It is hard enough to see oncoming vehicles when approaching Newport Avenue or the Boulevard from the side streets, especially east of Beach 129th Street., if vehicles, especially vans are parked near the corner. Recently, there has been a movie or TV shoot in the low Beach 120s area. The movie company has been parking its huge trucks on Newport and the Boulevard, making it IMPOSSIBLE to see oncoming traffic. One must inch out to practically the middle of the road to see oncoming vehicles. This is a sure recipe for an accident. Why can't the City make

Bandits Make a Grim Holiday Hit on Beach 129th Street By Kami-Leigh Agard

With Rockaway in full holiday swing this past weekend, on Monday, December 10, residents and business owners in the Belle Harbor community woke up to the not-so-merry news that four businesses located on Beach 129th Street’s bustling commercial strip were robbed in the wee hours of the morning. Two of the bandits were seen on security camera video footage captured by one of the businesses. However, as of press time, the NYPD is still on the hunt for the hooded bandits, who some locals suspect are quite familiar with the area. The four businesses robbed just after midnight are Harbor Cleaners, Bon Appetit, Polly and Esther, and Sofia C. Laundromat. All of these businesses are just separated by a few other storefronts on the east side of Beach 129th, between Cronston and Newport Avenues. The Deputy Commissioner, Public Information (DCPI), which is

NYPD’s press office, confirmed that the bandits entered the businesses through the rear of the buildings, and took money. According to a worker at the Laundromat, the bandits took approximately $400 in petty cash from the store, that was locked in the cashier drawer, and coins kept in a jar. “My boss’ husband opened the store as usual at 7 a.m. When he came in, and saw the mess and the broken-down back door, he immediately called the police,” said the worker, who preferred to remain anonymous. “He was the first to report the burglary on the street as we open really

early. He contacted me to wait before I reported to work. The place was a mess, and obviously the robbers were in a hurry because coins and boxes were strewn all over the floor. Thankfully, they didn’t take any of the laundry.” The worker also said that they were able to see the bandits on the store’s indoor camera video footage, which the police took right away. “From the video, you can see the two robbers entering the store through the backdoor. Both of them dressed in sweatshirts with the hoods pulled over their heads, face masks, sweat pants and gloves.

They were obviously well prepared. This has been quite a shock,” the Laundromat’s worker said. Kristin Cann, manager of boutique, Polly and Esther, said they first heard the news from the owner of Harbor Cleaners. “Tom from the Cleaners called my boss, Jamie Mcleod’s husband, to tell him what happened. We were and still are shaken. What a shock for all of us. I grew up and still live in this neighborhood. This is the last place you would imagine this happening. This is home,” Cann wistfully said. According to Cann, the thieves walked away with approximately $600 from the cash register, which they left open, and about $300 worth of jewelry. “The weird thing is they attempted to take some merchandise as well, including some vests, hats and other apparel items. Cann believes that the bandits are quite familiar with the area, and even knew where the cameras were located. “In our store, they ripped out the wires and disabled the camera. They seemed to know where the cameras were in an instant; and even how they entered through the backdoor is puzzling,” she said. The other two businesses robbed, Harbor Cleaners and Bon Appetit, declined to comment. Other surrounding businesses confirmed with The Rockaway Times that they were not robbed, and possessed no video footage. Many of the stores on this strip only have indoor cameras, not outdoor. On Facebook, there was news circulating that the Dunkin Donuts located at 113-20 Beach Channel Drive was also robbed.

However, NYPD Press confirmed the following: “There is no complaint on file for that address in 2018.” However, the NYPD did confirm there was a complaint report filed for a robbery at Rockaway Family Chiropractic, located at 129-10 Newport Ave, for an incident that occurred between Friday, December 7 and Monday, December 10. According to the NYPD, “Unknown person(s) entered a rear window. No items were removed. DCPI has not been provided with surveillance footage.”

The Rockaway community’s heart went out to Polly and Esther’s owner, Jamie Mcleod, when she posted the following on the morning of Wednesday, December 12, on Facebook: “This past Monday morning, at 1:15 a.m., four shops on Beach 129th were robbed. Last night they broke into the chiropractor's office on Newport. They came in through the back doors. If anyone noticed two men with masks on 129th Street, please contact the detectives at the 100th Precinct. They spent about two hours on the street

casing the area. “For those of you who live here, we all know how comfortable we feel living and working here. Those of us who own businesses in the area, please be vigilant and keep your eyes open. These men knew the stores and apparently where everything was. The feelings that you experience after this happens to you are unexplainable…Be careful and stay safe.” As for Cann, though she is still in shock, says these bandits are not going to dissuade businesses from serving their beloved community. “Our community has resurrected after numerous challenges, including Hurricane Sandy, and heartbreak with the Flight 587 crash. We’re survivors. I just want people to keep their eyes open and be aware of what’s going on around them,” she said. The 100th Precinct’s Detective Squad is on top of the investigation. CB14 December Meeting Recap By Katie McFadden

A ghost of Christmas past made an appearance at the latest Community Board 14 (CB14) meeting on Tuesday, December 11. In addition to updates from committees, public speaking and a presentation on a proposed urban farm project for local students, a director of the New York Rising Community Reconstruction Program was on hand to provide some updates on what happened to those post-Sandy recovery projects that were discussed years ago. During public speaking, Joe Hartigan spoke about how ferry service will continue to expand. Lew Simon provided some updates on the Marine Parkway Bridge, saying that the MTA has agreed not to close the bridge overnight for the month of December. He also spoke to the Rockaway Park Post Office about a lack of holiday stamps, which should be rectified later this week. Lisa George of Senator James Sanders’ office gave

a heads up about an upcoming workshop on reducing property tax and utility bills, on January 18 at Sanders’ office. Call 718327-7017 to make an appointment. Gale Harris, program director for the Far Rockaway Treatment Center, brought awareness to the substance abuse treatment center at 1600 Central Avenue. For more information, call 718-868-1400. JK Canepa announced that a potential offshore wind project could create local jobs, which they’ll continue to fight for. The fight against the new Williams Pipeline is also ongoing. A final Environmental Impact Statement for the project is expected in late January, but there is no plan for the public to comment on it. Canepa and others are fighting to change this. Bayswater resident Eugene Falik spoke about the horrendous mail problems across the peninsula and encouraged neighbors to report any problems at BayswaterCivic.org. He also suggested that

the NYPD should enforce traffic rules for city agencies. Following public speaking was a presentation on a proposed urban farm school center for a 3/4 –acre lot located between Beach 39th and Beach 40th on Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Narine Bharat of the Department of Education gave some information about the plan for a 1,800 squarefoot greenhouse for hydroponic and aquaculture systems to grow produce and fish, plus an outdoor area for raised beds for plantings. The project would be utilized by students from K-12 and would include two classrooms in trailers, where students would learn how to use the farm for not only growing produce, but marketing, management and other skills. The raised plant beds would also be accessible by students and their families on weekends or during summer breaks. The project is expected to get off the ground by spring 2019, so students can start planting seeds in the raised

beds, but funding is still needed for the greenhouse. A bulk of the CB14 meeting focused on a presentation from NY Rising, as committees spent several months discussing how the money should be used for post-Hurricane Sandy recovery projects, but very little seemed to be happening. Christopher Gorman, director of the state’s New York Rising Community Reconstruction Program, was on hand to break down where each project stands. He first announced that each project must be complete by fall 2022 for the funding to be awarded for them. Many expressed that while 2022 may seem far off, it isn’t, when it comes to the way the government functions. Gorman then broke down each project under each committee. In the Rockaway West section, there is a street improvement project for Beach 108th Street which is at the 50 percent designed phase. A plan to make improvements to St. Francis de Sales with a generator, flood protection measures, check valves to prevent sewer backups and more, has not yet entered the design phase but will soon. A $1.5 million comprehensive green infrastructure project for Rockaway West, including bioswales required testing, and specific sites for this project will soon be determined. Seaside and Peninsula Libraries were supposed to get resiliency upgrades including generators, but as of last week, Queens Library turned down the offer, claiming that it won’t have the funds to sustain these items in the future, so the funding for this, about $1.2 million will need to be reallocated to another project. In Rockaway East, hundreds of thousands of dollars were allocated to Arverne Church of God, the Jewish Community Council of Rockaway, the Far Rockaway Library and Rockaway Wa-

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2018 terfront Alliance for resiliency workshops, which have taken place. The Rockaway Development & Revitalization Corp. received nearly $500K for workshops to enhance community resiliency and to provide certification training for several OSHA classes. As far as construction projects go, Arverne Church of God, Congregation Kneseth Israel, Young Israel of Wavecrest, Addabbo Health Center and St. John’s Hospital are set to get resiliency measures like generators, check valves and more, and the design of these projects is 100 percent complete and will soon go out to bid. Downtown Far Rockaway will be getting a major $4.5M streetscape upgrade for which the city will be releasing a Request for Proposals. The Center for NYC Neighborhoods has also been awarded money to give homeowners resiliency reports that will advise them of different options for their homes to keep insurance costs down. For Broad Channel, phase two of the Sunset Cove project will receive $500K. The design phase

is almost 100 percent complete. Design for resiliency measures for the American Legion is almost 100 percent complete. A project that includes a new storage facility for the Broad Channel Athletic Club is 100 percent designed and should be going out to bid shortly. The design for the reconstruction of a boardwalk at East 12th Street is about 30 percent complete. The Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department is supposed to get $750K for a new firehouse, but bids for this project have failed so far, so more funding is being requested to make the job more appealing to contractors. The VFW was set to get money for resiliency measures, but after finding out that all NY Rising construction projects must get flood insurance, the VFW turned it down as it cannot afford insurance. In Breezy Point, there is a $17 million investment for three different sites to improve the stormwater drainage, including near the ball fields in Breezy and Roxbury, and a third site. This plan is expected to begin in 2019.

With so much information, CB14 requested a detailed report from Gorman, summarizing each project, and a promise that he’ll come to another meeting before the summer to provide new updates. The meeting ended with committee reports from CB14’s Youth Services and Education Committee and the Economic Development Committee. The Youth Committee report contained a lot of information as the committee recently met to discuss education issues for the first time in a long time. The chairpeople had invited the public to provide input as to what should be focused on in regards to Rockaway’s struggling schools. The committee will use this input as a starting point for what issues to focus on going forward. The EDC Committee report included a recap of what happened at the recent meeting regarding the courthouse on Beach 90th Street. NYPD Nabs Package Thieves The season of thievin’ continues, but thanks to local NYPD officers, there are a few less grinches on the street. On Tuesday afternoon, December 11, neighbors were shocked to see about a dozen police cars respond to a location on Beach 126th Street and learn that arrests were made of people stealing packages from porches. The Rockaway Times reached out to the 100th Precinct for more information on the incident. According to Community Affairs officer, Officer Daniel Smyth: “On Tuesday, December 11, 2018, at approximately 3:30 p.m., in the vicinity of Beach 127th Street, there was a 911

call made regarding package theft from the front of a residence. Subsequently, three males, ages ranging from 20-22, were arrested. Two of the three perpetrators were dressed as FedEx employees. They were charged with Petit Larceny, Criminal Impersonation, and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property. The third perpetrator was following in a vehicle close by. He was charged with Petit Larceny, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property and Driving with a suspended license. All three males are residents of Rockaway.” Way to go to the 100th Precinct for responding quickly to this matter and arresting the suspects.

Job Well Done In the November 15 issue of The Rockaway Times, we ran a feel-good story about FDNY Boxing, the Graybeards, Rockaway WISH and contractor Eric Jahrnes of Final Homes Contracting coming together to provide a new bathroom to a disabled Vietnam veteran. The vet, who chose to remain anonymous, had had a stroke that left him wheelchair-bound. Since moving to a Dayton Towers East building about a year and a half ago, the veteran couldn’t use the bathroom or bathtub in his apartment and resorted to using the showers at the YMCA a few blocks away. When Bobby McGuire of FDNY Boxing found out about his story at the Thrilla in Camillia event, which raises funds for Building Homes for Heroes, a nonprofit that provides smart homes for Afghanistan and Iraq veterans, he was determined to help the Vietnam veteran get a new bathroom that he could use in his home. ADDABBO and SANDERS GET NEW CHAIR POSTS New York State Senators Joseph Addabbo Jr. and James Sanders Jr. have been selected to chair committees for the 2019 state legislative session. Addabbo has been selected as chairman of the NYS Senate Standing Committee on Racing, Gaming and Wagering beginning in January. With Aqueduct Racetrack and the Resorts World New York City Casino located in his district, Addabbo is very familiar with the economic impact of these industries both locally and statewide. One issue that will come before the Racing, Gaming and Wagering Committee in the New Year will likely be the future of legal sports betting in New York. The Committee’s jurisdiction also includes oversight of the state’s racetracks, video lottery terminal placements, care of retired racehorses, off-track betting,

the New York State Lottery, charitable gaming, and other issues associated with racing and wagering in New York. In addition, the Committee oversees the operations and regulatory mission of the NYS Gaming Commission, as well as the work of the New York Racing Association (NYRA), which runs the Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga racetracks. Sanders has been selected to chair Senate Committee on Banks. Previously, in his capacity as the ranking Democrat on the Senate’s Committee on Banks, Sanders began addressing the disparities in lending particularly in lowand middle-income communities by supporting the modernization of the Community Reinvestment Act, a federal law that aims to accomplish this goal. FAITH AND HOPE Faith and love will guide you through difficult times. So often we experience suffering and loss in our life. Sadness can flow deep into our heart because we have loved and lost. Especially during the holidays, those that have lost loved ones feel a terrible sadness. We try to console and help one another as best we can but, in the end, you must trust the process. Love and compassion will help to heal your broken heart. Trust and believe. Without my faith, I would not be able to move on and continue to live life fully when times get tough. From a young age, it was

instilled in me to believe in God. It doesn’t matter what religion you belong to, but if you have your faith, you have the greatest gift you will ever receive. There will be good times and bad times, and you will learn to understand this is all part of life. We sometimes question why there is so much suffering and loss, but your faith will carry you on. Faith gives you strength, integrity and dignity. If we do not have our faith, we will break and lose heart. I believe in prayer and intention. My parents gave me the greatest gift when they taught me to have faith.

Hope is a word that not everyone believes in. We pray for miracles every day and hope there is a cure for disease or discontentment. One who has hope, has the will and determination to set goals so they will be achieved. Hope is important because life is difficult and so many obstacles are put in our way. Hope allows people to approach problems with a mindset to be successful. I hope whoever is reading this believes in the power of HOPE. Most times when I go to my yoga mat, I put my hands in a prayer gesture and I ask for God’s guidance. Without this special intention, I am somewhat lost. Working with my breath, I breathe in calm, I breathe out peace. My Intention draws my Attention in. The mantra resonates and begins to manifest within my body and mind. Paying attention to what you believe is powerful. Sometimes I will do nine sun salutations, each one representing an intention/ prayer attached to it. Pray for peace, pray for compassion, pray for healing, pray for love, pray for freedom, pray for humanity,

pray for the good of all, PRAY for FAITH. You don’t have to do nine sun salutations, but imagine setting intentions and having faith in each one, hoping for the best outcome? My faith is my lifesaver. My good friend Denise Lee gave me a beautiful coffee cup describing faith on it, “With Man this is impossible, but with God ALL things are POSSIBLE.” Matthew 19:26. May you all have faith in this beautiful season of lights. The Choice. "Is it faith or fear that rises to the fore, affirmation or negation at the very core and center of the self? Will it be light or dark within the heart today? The icy grip of fear that knots and sours leaving me to cower in the shadows? There is another way-I know it surely as I know the scent of Spring, the choice of faith invites, invokes, calls forth from all creation both the blessing and the lesson of the day. Smoke-Free Therapy As I have previously written, smoking tobacco products is probably one of the most destructive things people can do to themselves. Tobacco dependence remains the primary preventable cause of death in the United States. Addiction to tobacco and nicotine is a more powerful addiction than opioids and narcotics. That being said, it is fair to say that most smokers want to quit smoking but can’t. While some smokers are able to abruptly stop smoking (“cold turkey�), most smokers cannot suddenly stop. In order to quit, most smokers require a combination of pharmacologic therapy and counseling. Today, I would like

to discuss pharmacologic treatment for smoking cessation. Let’s start with nicotine replacement therapies (NRTs). Nicotine undergoes first-pass metabolism in the human body. That means that once nicotine enters the bloodstream, the first time it passes through the liver, it is almost entirely removed and broken down. That is why oral NRTs are not available. Because the half-life (the amount of time for a medication to be reduced to 50 percent of its maximum blood level) of nicotine is so short, oral NRT is ineffective. NRTs decrease smoking cessation rates by 50 to 70 percent, at least in the short term, plus they reduce the

amount of weight gain associated with quitting. Over-the-counter (OTC) NRTs include patches, lozenges, and gum (in lozenges and gum, the nicotine is absorbed through the gums). Nasal sprays and oral inhalers are available by prescription. Usually a combination of a patch and other form of NRT is recommended. Because it can irritate the throat and nasal membranes, nicotine nasal spray should not be used for more than three months. Side effects of NRTs include skin irritation, vivid dreams, insomnia, heartburn, nausea, and hiccups. Once NRT is initiated, the patient will slowly reduce, then stop, smoking. Bupropion (Wellbutrin) is an oral antidepressant that was found to have some nicotine-receptor-blocking ability. It should be started at least seven to 14 days before the targeted quit date. In studies, it doubled the quitting rate when compared to placebo. It is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects are insomnia and a dry mouth. Stop the Insanity So I often walk into work and ask the safety officer who sits at the front desk if he thinks today will be the day the hidden cameras come out and we find out that this whole crazy town act will be just a social experiment to see how much people can take. I truly believe that the people who are offended by everything are just saying it to see if they can get a rise out of people or to see if the corporate higher ups will modify things to suit the offended. The latest is one of my favorite holiday songs, “Baby

It’s Cold Outside.” The composer, Frank Loesser, is said to have written it as a song he and his wife could sing together at parties. I enjoy the movie Elf with Will Ferrell and I love the scene where him and Zooey Deschanel sing that song. Now people want it banned from the airwaves because the lyrics and a video of the song imply date rape. As of today, some radio stations polled their listeners and they have returned the song to its airwaves. I hope they do not cut it out of Elf… There is also outcry that

Rudolph is not appropriate for children due to its offensive content. My mother was pretty strict and would not let us watch certain television shows, such as Three’s Company because she did not think it was appropriate for Jack to live with Janet and Chrissy. I feel it is a story of someone who is different and in the end people see Rudolph for his strong points. Could it be that Ebenezer Scrooge is too mean to Tiny Tim? Maybe It’s A Wonderful Life portrays bankers in a negative

light and the banking industry says they want it banned from NBC. Or The Christmas Story is banned because of the inappropriate lamp that the dad hangs in the window for all of the neighbors to see? No wait, it would be the bullying that gets Flick to stick his tongue to the pole. That is super mean and offensive. matter what he's about, that you'd love to meet him, and you'll do your best to have no judgement. That means, really no advice-giving to her if she is open to introducing you. The Gift of Shopping Less By Sarah Arikian

This time last year I started becoming aware that I was spending time – lots of it – shopping. When I glanced at my iPhone the words boomed out at me: “SARAH, WE HAVE CURATED YOUR DREAM DECEMBER NEEDS,” “SARAH, YOUR SHOPPING BAG IS SAD – HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN SOMETHING?” Really? It irritated me and I started to think how shopping had become a time-consuming hobby. One ad would pop up and it would lead me down a warren of things that cost me a lot of time. Sometimes I succumbed – that unwise top from Sundance, those three-inch gray velvet peep-toed heels that were just too silly. And back to time. I realized that I was missing out on reading. I love reading.

Fifteen minutes with my nose in a book and I’d be Googling something, and then an ad would pop up for a sweater and I’d be looking to see if it was available in my size and I’d be off. I missed my quiet reading days. And my closet was getting too stuffed. Coincidentally, I read an article by Ann Patchett in the New York Times, My Year Without Shopping. It was inspiring! Maybe I could try? I set some rules. My stylish niece was getting married in September, in a swanky location in the south of France, and my whole family would be going. There was no way I was going to turn up shabby and not chic, so I gave myself permission, that I would be allowed to buy a dress. No other clothes, jewelry, shoes or bags, starting January 1!

On January 1, I was still lusting after a pair of Allbirds shoes. An advertisement on Facebook had told me I must buy, and I was annoyed with myself for not remembering to buy them before the new year rolled round. On January 2, I still wanted them. By January 4, I realized I could live without them, went into my closet, sorted through my shoes and donated a number of pairs. Finally, I could see all the nice pairs I already had! I spammed all my retail ads, and woke up to a severely depleted inbox, which was initially a shock (was I no longer loved?) – where were all my Anthropologie, Zappos friends? I found myself shopping in my own closet, even finding things with price tags on them. Unexpected abundance!

My daughter came over now and then and I gratefully adopted an excellent pair of Nikes and a sweater I took to wearing often and it made me think of her. I read lots of exceptional books with my gift of time. Less, (appropriate title!) by Andrew Sean Greer, and Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann, and I felt like my old self had returned. I realize there is a huge difference between shopping less and not being able to afford to shop. I ate out, went to shows, bought gifts from local retailers. But I found that it sharpened my awareness of money and time squandered. I cleaned out my bathroom cabinets and found samples of products I have been using all Continued on page 36

year. My shelves are minimalist now, and I finish everything, and that makes me happy. There is a Sanskrit term used by the ancient Yoga philosophers that I like: Aparigraha — The virtue of being less possessive, not greedy. I’ve been mulling over it this year, as I’ve repaired jeans and bought buttons, have worn things I didn’t think I liked, and worn my favorite things over and over. It’s simplified my life. When I finally got around to buying a dress for my niece’s wedding in September, it wasn’t a particularly fun experience and I was shocked by the prices. I should have reached into the back of my closet and packed that old teal-colored silky, swishy, dress that made me feel beautiful. It wasn’t like anyone had

The Rockaway Times seen me in it before either, so it would have been penny-wise and prudent. Overall I would say that this was a very positive experience. It made me face some of my spendthrift habits and question how I really wanted to spend my time. I’ve enjoyed the good things that are already mine, and I’ve wasted less. I am not sure what kind of resolution I will make next year. Maybe I will continue, and maybe I will purchase just one pair of highly impractical shoes? Just for fun…

The magic is in sharing the experience with your child. I came up with the above ideas after carefully listening to RBAF parents. There should be no guilt in demanding what you need to make the holidays brighter for you as a caregiver. The less stressed you are, the more bandwidth of patience you will have with your children. So get out there, declare what you want and have a blessed holiday season! Smoked Mozzarella Pasta Salad By Sharon Feldman

Need an easy dish to bring to a party? This one is easy and delicious. Ingredients: 1 (6oz) jar marinated artichoke hearts 1 (8oz) package rotini pasta, cooked 1 (7 oz) jar roasted red bell peppers, drained and cut into strips ½ lb smoked mozzarella cheese, cut into ½” cubes ½ (5oz) bag baby spinach leaves (about 1-1/2 cups) ½ (4-5 oz) can chopped green Katie Lucev is the daughter of the late Rockaway Beach Historichiles, drained an, Emil R. ¼ cup mayonnaise ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese ¼ cup pine nuts, toasted 1 garlic clove, minced Garnishes: tomato wedges, baby spinach leaves Drain artichokes, reserving marinade. Cut artichokes into strips, and place in a large bowl. Add pasta and roasted red peppers, smoked mozzarella cheese, baby spinach and green chiles, and gently toss. Stir together reserved artichoke marinade, mayonnaise, and Parmesan cheese, pine nuts and garlic and mix until well blended. Add to pasta mixture, stirring to combine. Cover and chill. Garnish, if desired. *If you like your pasta wetter, use another ¼ cup of mayonnaise and ¼ cup of Parmesan cheese. I found it too moist. **1/2 pound smoked gouda or Cheddar may be substituted for smoked mozzarella, if desired.

Annual Christmas Tree Lighting at SFDS Hundreds gathered on Rockaway Beach Boulevard outside the St. Francis de Sales Prayer Garden to celebrate the annual lighting of its 100+ Christmas trees and angels. Bill Sweeney and Father Jim offered prayers and blessed the trees. Holiday music filled the air. The crowd was also serenaded by Father Jomar, who was celebrating his birthday (and Father Jomar took these pics!) Santa made an appearance and so did Roger the Elf who delighted all the kids. Slipping Through the Cracks This one shouldn’t slip through the cracks. Local resident Donna Ward recently wrote a letter to NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver and DOE Chancellor Richard Carranza to bring attention to the disintegrating tennis courts at the Beach Channel Educational Campus and to suggest some be used for pickleball. We’ll let her letter and photos do the talking. Dear Commissioner Silver and Chancellor Carranza, I am writing concerning the Beach Channel Tennis Courts and their conversion to pickleball courts in Rockaway. The NYC Parks department website states that, “It’s never been easier to become a tennis player in New York City”. That may be true elsewhere but not if you live in Rockaway. There are eight tennis courts at Beach Channel High School that are virtually unusable (photos enclosed). The cracks that are all over every court were patched

with what appears to be tar sealer. The playing surface is completely uneven. This is true for all the courts. They look like a jigsaw puzzle. You can still see the cracks through some of the seams, not to mention weeds coming through the cracks. Some courts have half a net, while other courts are missing nets, and the nets that are there are damaged. After Hurricane Sandy, we were promised so many things that never materialized. Our boardwalk (actually cement walk) took nearly five years to complete. It’s funny that the Empire State Building was built in a little over a year. The city sprung for a wooden boardwalk in Coney Island but not in Rockaway. It was too expensive. The NYC Parks Department recently sponsored a pickleball tournament in Rego Park. It seems ironic that there are no public outdoor pickleball courts in NYC. Marine Park in Brook-

lyn was recently renovated and has fifteen tennis courts. Couldn’t you convert four of those courts to pickleball courts? A second thought, although a less desirable option, would be to put pickleball lines in a different color and the courts could be used for both tennis and pickleball. Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the United States with the exception of New York. It’s ideal for older tennis players who may have lost some mobility. The average age of a pickleball player is 64 years of age. Pickleball has both health and socialization benefits. “Good things come to those who sweat.”

We have a beautiful beach and boardwalk in Rockaway, but only one city park that looks as though it was abandoned (Beach 51st Street and Almeda Ave). We have no major businesses (except for Stop and Shop), no movie theatre, no city golf courses and no ice skating rinks. To travel to Brooklyn, we are reliant on the Marine Parkway Bridge, which has been under repair for the last 17 years. We do have a Federal Park (Riis Park), but it was voted the worst federal park in the U.S. It’s in the same shape as our tennis courts - shambles. I have an online petition signed by my fellow pickleball enthusiasts. The Beach Channel Tennis Courts are like pieces of coal just waiting to become diamonds. All they need is pressure.
