De Blasio Sits Down With Uptown By Katie McFadden
“I went to the St. Patrick’s Day parade and heard your message at the parade. The community is good at getting important messages across during parades,” Mayor Bill de Blasio joked in front of a packed house at PS 114 on Tuesday, December 5. For the first time, residents of the west end of the peninsula got to deliver their messages to the Mayor in a much more controlled atmosphere. De Blasio directly heard and addressed locals’ concerns at a Town Hall, which many found to be a positive and productive open forum. More than 200 residents packed the gym of PS 114 of the event hosted by Councilman Eric Ulrich. Over the course of nearly three hours, Mayor de Blasio and commissioners of almost every major city agency, listened to the unique concerns of the Rockaway peninsula, and came up with instant solutions to some, promises of improvements on others, and admis-

sions that some things are out of the city’s hands. Some of the hot button issues of the evening included coastal protection, transportation, housing, and education. Before opening the Town Hall to questions from the audience, the Mayor provided some updates about some good things coming to the community. “We know that your council district and Rockaway didn’t get the
investment they deserved in many ways for many decades. My job had been to try to make up for that,” he said. He spoke about Rockaway being a town full of first responders and provided updates about local fire departments and police. “We’re making two investments. We’re going to be making the firehouses better at Engines 266 and 329. They deserve it,” he said, without going
into detail. He also spoke of the decrease in crime across the city, and specifically the 100th Precinct, which saw an eight percent decrease in crime from last year, zero homicides and only one shooting. Before the audience could even get into it, de Blasio acknowledged the need for urgent coastal protection, and his plans to hopefully get it to Rockaway quicker. “I didn’t live it the way you lived it, but I was here in the days after Sandy. I saw just how shocking the devastation was. We have a lot more work to do. Compared to five years ago, some things are better. That doesn’t let us off the hook for the many things we have to do. On the beach, 4 million plus cubic yards of sand was added. I know a lot of it’s gone, but it was added. And it made things better. We’re proud of the boardwalk. The new boardwalk protects everyone. Not Been There, Not Done That A great conversation starter was posted on Twitter by Katie Honan. She asked, “New Yorkers, what’s the one New York thing you haven’t done?” Lots of people weighed in. Glancing through the replies, I’d say the Empire State Building was the place most mentioned. The Statue of Liberty was another famous spot that a lot of New Yorkers just haven’t made it to, yet. (And if they haven’t yet, they ain’t likely to). I’m not, I swear, going down memory lane again but these two
places were easier to visit a few decades ago. You could go to the Empire State Building on a whim. It was free to ride the elevator to the 86th floor and get an unmatched view of the city. For a couple of bucks, they even had a recording booth in which you could make your own 45 record (if you’re under 30, don’t ask). In my deep research for this week’s column, this one blew me away. You can still ride the elevator to the 86th floor but it costs $36! That made me curse
but I don’t use such language. If you’re a New Yorker and haven’t been to the Empire State Building, you can now avoid it on principle. Thirty-six dollars, my ass. And these days, you gotta make reservations for the Statue of Liberty, if you want to go up to the crown. Reservations? Who’s doing that? Katie herself listed McSorley’s, the famous Irish bar on the lower East Side, as a New York institution that somehow she’s missed. I’m guessing she’ll get to it. Katz’s Deli, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, Times Square on New Year’s Eve, and the Circle Line were mentioned by others. Peter Luger Steakhouse, Radio City, the UN, and the Cloisters were places still on the bucket list for some. This being New York, you had to expect some true New York responses. One person said he’d never jumped a subway turnstile and another said he’d never thrown up in a subway station or train. Someone else said they’d never stopped pro-
Page 5 fessing love for the BQE. Another guy said he’d never had a hot dog from a street vendor. Say what? He must’ve arrived 10 minutes ago. Islands seem to be too much of a hassle for some. Ellis, Liberty, Governors, City, and Staten were yet to be visited by people claiming to be New Yorkers — which makes me wonder about Rockaway. All those New York landmarks might as well be the moon for some locals. It’s completely possible to live on this spit of land and never, ever, leave. You might not get the best meal, healthcare or education but all those things are still available for those who can’t bear to leave the beach. I mean you can even go to college online. You can even play a parochial version of Katie Honan’s game. What Rockaway thing have you never done? It’ll be easy to find someone who’s never been to the Empire State Building, but the trick is to find someone who hasn’t been to Connolly’s or on the boardwalk. What haven’t you done?

That’s what we were told last Thursday. We don’t know what’s going on at the Rockaway Park branch but no stamps? We
hope that’ll get straightened out before the holiday crush. ***** ‘Tis the season for thieven’. Cars are being broken into (it’s been a real problem in Broad Channel lately) and packages have been taken off porches in Belle Harbor. Be careful and keep your eyes open. And call the police if you’ve suspect something (or been a victim). A police presence will occur if the precinct is made aware. ***** The Regional Plan Association, an urban research and advocacy organization, releases comprehensive plans every twenty years or so. Its most recent plan got some attention when they suggested saving money by closing the subway overnight. That was just one take away. The plan focuses on four urban challenges: institutions, climate change, transportation, and affordability. Another take away was the study’s recommendation that the Rockaway Branch line be reactivated so passengers could have a one seat ride from JFK to Manhattan. The full plan is
available online at FourthPlan. org. Although most of the plan will never happen (price tags and the bureaucracy are two murderous hurdles), it is an easy-to-read summary of what the region needs. ***** We got an interesting message from a notable figure in the arts who wants to work with an architect, preferably a retired one, on an experimental flood-proof house or structure that is different than the Build It Back standard lift job. John Kenny of NYTRUE.com, snapped and sent us a picture of the mayor holding up the shirt with a note, “Don't know if is marketing gold or a nightmare that will drive your readers away.” Exactly, John. It seems anytime we put a politician(s) on the front page we get leftover papers in our news rack which otherwise empty out quickly. We’re guessing he won’t be wearing the shirt as he works out in the gym in Park Slope, but he liked it enough that a photo was posted to the Mayor’s official photo page.

more to do,â&#x20AC;? de Blasio said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But everyone can agree we need our partners at the Army Corps to do more and do it more quickly. And next month, Janaury 26 in Washington, D.C., I have a meeting with the commanding general of the Army Corps, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m going to tell him that Rockaway needs more protection and we need it to be a priority,â&#x20AC;? he announced to heavy cheers from the crowd. De Blasio also addressed the issue of dirty beaches over the summer and announced that the Parks Department will be adding an additional 10-person cleaning crew for heavily utilized areas from Beach 59th to Beach 117th Street. De Blasio spoke of some education updates including expanding free, full day pre-K across the city and efforts to start 3k, or free education for three-year-olds, which will be coming to Rockawayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s District 27 starting in the fall, with applications opening on February 5. He also spoke of increasing af-
ter-school resources for middle school students in the area and across the city. The mayor touted his achievement of bringing back the ferry as part of a citywide service, so that it would be difficult to get rid of. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We built this thing so no one can take it away. God help the future mayor who tries to take it away from you. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not gonna happen,â&#x20AC;? de Blasio said, adding that new upgrades will be coming, including more bike racks and digital kiosks directing passengers to local businesses at docks, plus larger boats by the spring to accommodate big summer crowds. In his final update, de Blasio announced that a $55 million grant is going towards the apartments at Dayton Beach Park to secure the future of the development and ensure that it will be affordable for the next 35 years. Board 14 President Dolores Orr was granted the first question, which happened to be about Dayton Beach Park. Orr spoke of investigations of the board and management company there, and Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) voiding a recent board election due to questions about the legitimacy of the vote, among other issues. The Mayor directed the question to Lydon Sleeper, HPDâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Chief of Staff, who said theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re aware of the issues and are currently doing an audit, which will determine actions that will be taken. He also said theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be working closely with a new management company that is set to come in at the beginning of next year. Next up, both John Cori and Hank Iori, big advocates for beach protection, requested that when the Mayor speaks to the Army Corps of Engineers next month, that he urges them to include adding jetties from Beach 123rd to Beach 149th as part of their protection plan. The Mayor and Parks Department Commissioner Mitchell
Silver said they will ask for the addition, and reiterated that they will urge the Army Corps to start with their plans in 2018. Speaking on other beach issues, a mother of a son in a wheelchair asked for beach access to be increased for those with disabilities, which includes adding more beach mats, maintaining them and ensuring they go from the street to the water. Demanding immediate action, de Blasio had Parksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Queens Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowki estimate the cost, which she determined to be $200,000. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I will pay for this,â&#x20AC;? de Blasio said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Between Beach 127th and 149th Street, we will pay for the staffing and equipment so mats will be placed on every street in that section.â&#x20AC;? Jean Belford brought up the need for a trauma center, especially in the wake of the fire that killed 12-year-old T.J. This past Saturday night, many children across the peninsula, in Broad Channel (BC) and beyond, who just attended the Beach 116th Christmas tree lighting, may have gone to bed singing Jingle Bells with visions of jolly Ol' Saint Nick in their heads. However, tragically, one 12-year-old boy’s life ended in a nightmare before Christmas. Early morning Sunday, December 3, around 3:05 a.m., a ferocious fire broke out in a fifth floor apartment of six-story residential rental building, 122-20 Ocean Promenade. According to an FDNY spokesperson, the fire was an all-hands response with 60 firefighters and 12 units, and took about an hour to get under control. Twelve-year-old Thomas Curley, affectionately called T.J. by his family and friends, was found unresponsive by first responders, and after being taken to Nassau Community Medical Center was pronounced dead due to smoke inhalation. Three other people, including T.J.'s family members, suffered serious injuries in the blaze, while five more — one of them a firefighter — suffered minor injuries. All were taken to Nassau Community. In the days after the fire, the FDNY determined the cause to be an accident due to smoking. The smoke detectors were reported to be not working.

Rockaway Park resident, Eileen Steakin, visiting friends in a third floor apartment of the building, said, “I woke up feeling as though I was having heart burn. I jumped up and suddenly realized that I was smelling smoke. It was pouring in thick as a blanket from the hallway. My friends and I grabbed the dogs, and immediately fled into the hallway, and saw absolute bedlam. It was around three in the morning, and people were in their pajamas with their pets and children panicking. Then we saw the firefighters, who safely guided us out of the building. From outside, we could see as the fire hoses were going up, more and more firefighters were coming down with residents. “We weren’t able to go back in until four hours later. However, the real heartbreaking part is what happened to little T.J. I fondly remember him as

a good kid, well-behaved. He was an only child, who brought so much joy to his family and the community.â&#x20AC;? T.J. Curley was a student at PS 114 in Belle Harbor, who played the trumpet. One friend of the family, Rockaway resident, Donna Miley-Figueroa, who could barely speak because of her utter heartbreak said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I could never pick one memory about T.J. He respectfully called my husband and I, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;uncle and aunt.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; He con-
sidered our two girls, Marley and Vinni, cousins. As a family, we always went to block parties, the beach, birthdays, holidays â&#x20AC;&#x201D; everything! I knew his family for as long as I could remember. T.J. was such a pleasure to be around, so kind and polite. He always stopped to hug you â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;hello.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; T.J., my daughters, and his friends Alannah, Claire and Danielle helped Liz Hanna from Mazzone Hardware light the Christmas tree just hours before this tragedy. My heart is broken for the Curley family. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll miss him more than anything.â&#x20AC;? In true Rockaway fashion, lo-
cals are now banning together to do what they can to help the Curley family through what is sure to be an extremely tough road ahead, emotionally and financially. POTUS No Float Us Dear Editor: My first time taking the Rockaway ferry was a DISASTER! On Saturday, December 2, I had to get into the City for dinner and a play, so thought I’d hop on the 3:30 p.m. ferry after visiting my girlfriend. I got to the pier and lots of people were waiting, but it was a no-show boat! Plus no announcements as to why — only the “crawl” on monitor saying to go online for service alerts. So I go to the site and it says the Coast Guard closed the East River. WHAT???? (I’m wondering if the boat hit another submerged object.) Now I’m not
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2017 going to make it to my plans in time. Ugh. I’m so frustrated that I call 311 to complain. They give me complaint info for Hornblower. Customer service claims that announcements were made. (Not while I was there along with the dozens waiting on the pier). They said I had to use their app to get info and that the river was closed because Trump was in town. Plus, they won’t refund my two tickets since they’re good for a year. Hornblower really blows! How about real-time info on that monitor or speaker system for service delays, instead of making people go to an app? Even the subways have Countdown Clocks and garbled voice messages. OR don’t those shuttle bus drivers know what’s happening to let passengers know? (Oh, wait, it’s not their job, right?) OR how about an enclosed area to wait on the pier, especially in winter? When it comes to the accidents on Beach 108th Street and Rockaway Beach Blvd, I really liked your line: "I suppose it's a case of if a tree falls in the forest but no one's around to hear, it still makes a sound." Like I said, all the accidents (stats) and what type of accident occurred can be obtained at Councilman Eric Ulrich's office. ‘Tis the season of thievin’. On Monday, December 4, a grinch decided to steal Christmas, or at least a package. Just before 8 a.m., the man allegedly walked up to a home on Beach 139th Street and simply walked away with the resident’s Amazon package. Luckily, surveillance video got a clear shot of the man. Ironically, it seems the man needed Jesus in his life. The package contained a nativity set, instead of an expensive electronic he was probably hoping for. By Wednesday morning, a res-
ident had tracked down the man and said he reported him to the 100th Precinct, but by press time, it was not clear if the suspect was arrested. To avoid delivery theft, the NYPD suggests selecting the option of having someone sign for packages, providing shipping information of someone that will be home at the delivery time, purchasing package insurance if the item is costly, and leaving specific instructions on where to leave packages if possible. Neighbors can also help by holding onto packages for residents that may not be home.

Car Thieves Ransack Broad Channel By Katie McFadden
Last weekend, at least five suspects ransacked through dozens of cars in Broad Channel and stole two vehicles while residents were sound asleep. Between the hours of 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. on Sunday, December 3, approximately five young men targeted cars from Noel Road to 11th and 18th Roads, taking items from seats, glove compartments, consoles and trunks. One resident found a key to a neighbor’s car inside their car. Two residents woke up to their cars nowhere to be found. No one saw a thing that early Sunday morning, but security cameras around the neighborhood caught the young men on their spree and at least a dozen police reports were filed. “Our car was broken into and my son's car was stolen on West 18th Road,” Margaret Wagner said. “What is truly so eerie about this whole incident
is that they walked from Noel Road to 18th up and down three or four blocks from 2 to about 3 or 4 a.m., and no one saw anything. I keep thinking that it is a blessing, that no one did confront them. God forbid, one of them was carrying a knife or gun, and someone from our community was hurt or killed.” Some believe the suspects used a unique device to help them break into cars. According to Broad Channel Civic Association President Dan Mundy Jr., it is believed the suspects used an amplifier device to break into cars that use a keyless sys-
tem, or an electronic button to open and start cars. Yet some residents admit they didn’t lock their doors. “Mine was the first car hit during the spree on Noel Road. My door was left unlocked after I forgot to lock it after grabbing my headphones to go for a run,” Chrystal Scotti said. “Videos show them coming from the train station, two guys on one sidewalk and three on the other, pulling aggressively at door handles. They spent three minutes in my car. They made off with $10 in change, a spare cell phone and a fishing knife.” Others lost much more. Lauren Wagner's car, one of the cars that was stolen, contained a trunk full of presents from a 60th birthday party the night before. On Tuesday, Wagner reported that her car was discovered in Brooklyn and two boys, ages 15 and 19, were arrested by officers of the 75th Precinct for the theft. The presents were not recovered, but the car was returned in repair-
able condition. On Monday, members of the NYPD Explorers program were out leaving notices on cars to make residents aware of the recent thefts and ways to protect themselves, including a reminder to not leave any valuable items in cars and to keep doors locked. Residents are hoping even more will be done. “There is no reason a group of kids should be able to walk the streets at 2 a.m. without being questioned by police. Anyone out at that hour is up to no good. More police presence, possibly a permanent car stationed in the Channel would be useful,” Scotti said. On Thursday, December 7, at 7 p.m., the Deputy Inspector of the 100th Precinct and the Chief of Queens South are scheduled to appear at the Broad Channel Civic Association meeting at the VFW (705 Shad Creek Road) to provide information and updates on the issue.

For Patricia Young, fellow Breezy Point resident and animal lover, Kim Fraser, is the epitome of the animal whisperer. “Kim speaks their language, and the animals in turn feel and see her gentleness. Rain, sleet, snow — nothing deters Kim from coming to the rescue of an animal — day or night,” Young said. In January 2013, Fraser, co-founder with her niece, Joey Bones, of Sasha's Mission Animal Rescue (SMAR), was thrust into the national spotlight after several media outlets reported on how she was able to help a Belle Harbor family find their
‘Sandy dog’, Buster, and save it from being euthanized. After Superstorm Sandy, Buster was discovered missing from the O’Donovan’s home. On December 12, Fraser found a picture of Buster on the Animal Care and Control website. He was on their urgent list of animals, scheduled for euthanasia if owners do not claim them or a temporary home is not found within 72 hours. Fraser said, “As soon as I saw the photo, I knew it was Buster, as I had rescued him once before. However the timing was critical, as there was no way to reach the shelter as they were closed at that time. I messaged them, hoping someone would see it on time.” Thankfully, someone did, because the O’Donovans were able to retrieve Buster before he was killed. However, Fraser doesn’t care for the spotlight, she just adores all animals — whether they have fur, fins or feathers.

“I come from a long line of animal lovers. My children are fifth generation Breezy residents, and I raised them to love and care for animals, just like my parents and their parents did. We founded SMAR because we witnessed how many animals in Rockaway are either lost or abandoned.” In 2011, Fraser was inspired

For animals they aren’t able to find adoptees, they try to pair them with foster homes. “I have four dogs and two cats, two of whom are partially blind, but I still bring some rescue animals to my house when I am unable to find temporary housing for them. I am so grateful for my friends, who always keep their door open, even when I show up in the middle of the night, asking them to temporarily house an animal I just rescued,” Fraser said. As for advice for current animal owners or those looking to foster or adopt a pet, Fraser said, “I am a certified animal trainer, and after rescuing an animal,

A Special Little North Pole Visit Hearts were warm at Joe Mureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Little North Pole on Monday night when members of St. Camillus Special Olympics were treated to their very own night of magic. There was food, candy, musical performances and plen-
ty of smiles when the Little North Pole lit up once again for the special guests. However, the main event was when Santa Claus arrived on the back of a fire truck and met with everyone in attendance to give them a toy. The Little North Pole (14403 Neponsit Avenue) will be lit through January. Each year, the home is lit with spectacular lights to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Yesterday I found myself sitting, slumped on a steamy hot subway bench, wearing too many layers, staring downwards, expressionless at the dirty, brown platform tiles. It was a few days after Thanksgiving and I was tired after walking all over Manhattan. I’d finished my book and my phone was dead and the station was eerily quiet with no trains and no announcements and a steadi-
ly increasing crush of resigned commuters. The minutes passed by. My brain chugged along the lines of hot, tired, thirsty, nothing to do but wait, resignation, irritation, getting really annoyed now… And suddenly I remembered to smile. I’d been reading a passage the previous evening from Buddha’s Book of Meditation by Joseph Emet, a Dharma teacher trained by the Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, and

the wise words floated across my negative brain. We smile with our face, but that’s the only visible part of a smile. We can train our brains to connect the smile on our faces with a smiling heart and a smiling body. As I remembered this, and smiled, I was suddenly aware of the change in my posture. My shoulders had moved back and down, away from my ears. My spine was straighter. I felt energy in my abdomen, rather than a sad, defeated hunched over slump. Instead of staring at the dirty ground in front of me, I was glancing around the platform at my fellow travelers. And, interestingly, my breath was deeper and slower — it had space to breathe in me. I felt so much better! We boarded the train, finally, and my smile came along for the ride. I glanced around, because now I was on a mission to see if my newfound joy was going to have any effect on my fellow travelers. Unfortunately, absolutely everyone was hunched over a screen, apart

from one child who looked over at me quickly, smiled, and then re-engaged with his phone. This was a shame because joy is contagious. You can catch it. When you watch a child play, or a puppy frolic, it’s hard not to laugh or at least enjoy the spirit of lightheartedness. If Continued on page 29

Tale of The Tape Cellphones, and particularly smartphones, are everywhere these days. It is estimated that 77 percent of the U.S. population has or has access to a smartphone. Smartphones feature recording devices that can record both audio and video, and can do so clandestinely. Physicians and other health care professionals are now realizing that some patients are recording their office visits, often without the consent of the person being recorded. In one survey of the general public done in the United Kingdom, it was found that 15 percent of respondents admitted that they had secretly recorded a clinic visit, and 11 percent knew of someone who had done so. Many times the motivation to record the visit is reasonable: patients want a recording to listen to again, improve their recall and understanding of medical information, and share the information with family members. In the few healthcare organizations in the U.S. that offer patients recordings of office visits, both the physicians and patients report benefits. In addition, liability (malpractice) insurers maintain that the presence of a recording can protect clinicians. At the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, where patients are routinely offered video recordings of their visits, clinicians who participate in these recordings are offered a 10 percent reduction in insurance premiums and an extra $1 million in liability coverage. Many clinicians and clinics, however, have concerns about the ownership of the recordings and the potential that they will be used as a basis for legal claims or complaints. There are also concerns about the legality of secret recordings, but many clinicians and patients are uncertain as to what the laws actually are.
Actually, wiretapping and eavesdropping statutes vary from state to state. These laws provide a legal framework guiding recording practices and guard against nonconsensual recordings in situations where individuals have a reasonable expectation that the conversation is private. In so-called all-party jurisdictions, covert recording (recording without the express permission of all parties) is illegal. In contrast, in single-party jurisdictions, the consent of just one party is sufficient, including the person making the recording, so covert recording is actually legal in those areas. At present, 39 states and the District of Columbia conform to the single-party consent rule. The 11 states that conform to the all-party rules are California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Washington. The consequences for violating wiretapping laws can be severe as it is typically a felony, and the recorded party can sue for damages, harm, attorneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fees, and other costs. Plus illegal recordings are not admissible in court. In single-party states, if the clinician is asked by the patient to record the visit, the recording may still be done against the clinicianâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s consent, although the clinician has the right to conclude the visit. In all-party states, if the clinician is recorded without giving consent, that illegal recording may be reported to the authorities. As New York is a single-party state, it is still a good idea, in my opinion, to ask the clinician for consent to record. Secretly recording a visit may lead to erosion of the doctor-patient relationship and jeopardize the trust that that relationship is built upon. Some asked for the LIRR to become more affordable, which the MTA is currently working on. I Hate Mr. Murphy!
I received hundreds of inquiries last week asking why there was no Between the Bridges column in The Rockaway Times. Okay, maybe not hundreds but I did get quite a few. Several maybe? Sadly, truth be told, only my neighbor and friend Larry called and asked about the missing column. I figured I would use
this column to come clean. Myself and my beloved Grace ("she who must be obeyed") were recently happily preparing to depart on a 10-day Caribbean cruise aboard the Norwegian Gem leaving from the Manhattan Cruise Terminal in Hell's Kitchen over on the west side on the Hudson. We were scheduled to visit four islands that (hopefully) were not overly traumatized by the recent spate of hurricanes. Accompanying us was a rather significant number of other friends and neighbors from Broad Channel and Rockaway whose idea of breakfast at sea is a frozen margarita or, in some cases, a Bahama Mama! Grace loves life aboard a cruise liner while I, on the other hand, really dislike the claustrophobia that gnaws at my inner being when inside a small cabin. I had also heard all the horror stories about rough seas and seasickness, passengers being struck down by the norovirus, (Le-

And c'mon â&#x20AC;&#x201D; doesn't anyone remember Leon Klinghoffer and the Achille Lauro hijacking back in 1985? Geez, getting long in the tooth sucks! On the other hand, the all-inclusive beverage package which guarantees you can obtain your favorite beverage aboard the ship at any hour of the day, certainly helps to smooth out the rough edges of life aboard a cruise liner. That being said, I went to hell with myself deciding that if there was even a smidgen of a chance I could be struck down sick or fall (or be thrown) overboard, this trip I would go in style. Throwing caution (and whatever common sense I have left) to the wind, I lowballed a bid for a cabin upgrade and was shocked to discover that I had been awarded an upgrade to a Luxury Haven Owner's suite with multiple rooms, espresso machine, stocked bar, two large balconies and a bathroom you can get lost in that has both a window and a television just above the tub. The suite also has a guest bathroom so our royal potty and sink need not be sullied by visitors. And get this â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the upgrade included 24-hour access to a concierge, private court yard, pool and restaurant, as well as 24-hour access to our own personal butler. As an aside, I immediately made plans to heavily tip our butler upon arrival in the suite with the instructions that I would call (insert your own pronoun here
â&#x20AC;&#x201D; don't want to rile the gender fanatics!) "Alfred" and (insert your own pronoun again) in turn would refer to me as "Master Bruce" for the entirety of the cruise. I could hardly contain my excitement as it appeared that with my lowball upgrade bid, Lady Luck had finally deemed to smile upon my pending ocean adventure. I was so pleased with myself I told Kevin Boyle, this paper's publisher, that I would proudly wear my Day-Glo Rockaway Times T-shirt, while basking in the luxury of my owner's suite and any formal events that might come up during the trip. Ever the pragmatist, Kevin cautioned me that the T-shirt might actually get me thrown overboard! Unfortunately, I had forgotten to take into account one of the most important factors to be kept in mind while undertaking any project, including the planning of a vacation â&#x20AC;&#x201D; that of Murphy's Law, which states that "If anything can go wrong, it will!" Apparently Mr. Murphy saw fit to wait until just four days prior to our scheduled sailing to put the kibosh on one of the cruise liners main engines down in Barbados, effectively taking it out of service, canceling our planned cruise, leaving me with the sole option of taking my beloved Grace over to Beach Channel Drive to hop aboard the Rockaway Ferry for a round trip cruise to Manhattan. I hate Mr. Murphy! Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Traditional Hanukkah Potato Latkes By Sharon Feldman I got this recipe from website: thespruce.com "Fried food,” explains Giora Shimoni, "is traditionally eaten on Hanukkah in commemoration of the oil that miraculously burned for eight days when the Maccabees purified and rededicated the holy Temple in Jerusalem." Shimoni's recipe for classic potato latkes —also known as levivot in Hebrew — uses a food processor to simplify the prep. Yields: 20 latkes Serves: 6 Ingredients: 5 large potatoes (2-1/2 – 3 lbs). I use Yukon Gold. 2 onions, peeled 3 large eggs (lightly beaten) 1 teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon pepper ¼ to ¾ cup flour (all purpose)
2 cups cooking oil (Canola is recommended) Garnish: applesauce and/or sour cream for serving Directions: Line a plate with paper towels and set aside. Peel the potatoes. Place them in a bowl and add enough cold water to cover them, so they do not turn brown. When you are ready to make the latkes, drain the potatoes. Place the potatoes and onions in a food processor fitted with a knife blade (S-blade). Pulse until smooth. Drain the mixture well. Pour the potato mixture into a large bowl. Add the beaten eggs, salt and pepper, and mix well. Add enough flour so that the mixture holds together. Pour 1-inch of oil into a large, deep frying pan. Heat the oil over medium high heat. Carefully drop ¼ cup of the potato mixture into the hot oil. Flatten the pancake slightly so the center will cook. Repeat with additional batter; take care not to crowd the pan. Fry for several minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through. Transfer to the paper towel-lined plate to drain, and continue frying the remaining batter. Serve immediately with applesauce and/or sour cream.

Christmas in Broad Channel It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Broad Channel. The Broad Channel Athletic Club’s (BCAC) Christmas Tree Lighting was a big success last Sunday, December 3. Residents were treated to performances by the PS 47 chorus, the local Girl Scouts troop and Thomasina Dance Company. Santa Clause arrived by Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department fire truck and helped light the BCAC’s tree, donated by Lise-
na Garden Center. Visitors also brought toys to be donated for Anna O’Connor’s toy drive for the Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Photos from the BCAC.

As a children’s librarian, I especially looked forward to sharing extraordinary holiday books with my classes. I read countless stories, but these were my favorite read aloud books and were always embraced by the children. In my first column I recommended A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. Like Ove, Jonathan Toomey is a cantankerous, gloomy, unhappy widower. His story in The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey by Susan Wojciechowski tells of a transformative awakening of the heart. With each page, realistically illustrated by P.J. Lynch, you can see the effect that the widow McDowell and her son, Thomas, have on him. It is like watching a flower’s petals slowly open to the sun. A master woodcarver, Jonathan is commissioned by the widow to replace the Christmas figures that were carved by her grandfather, but were lost. Through Thomas, Jonathan learns that the figures not only have to be perfect, but be imbued with feelings. By the end of the book, Jonathan has faced the emotions he has buried so thoroughly, and now sees the possibility of a bright future. This multiple award-winning book is available with a companion CD compellingly narrated by James Earl Jones. I read The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree by Gloria Houston every year for 15 years to my 5th graders, and every time I finished reading it, I teared up. Not only the text, but the illustrations, acrylic paintings by Caldecott Medalist, Barbara Cooney, authentically set the scene of Appalachia during and at the end of WWI. This is a story of sacrifices — Ruth-
ie’s courageous father going off to war, and Ruthie’s heroic and hardworking mother who has little, but gives everything to provide Ruthie with all she needs for a perfect Christmas. It is the story of Ruthie and her mom caroling in the mountains at night to keep Ruthie’s fears at bay, while they cut down the perfect balsam Christmas tree for their church. This is a moving, timeless tale beautifully rendered. The Christmas Menorahs: How a Town Fought Hate by Janice Cohn tells the true story of how the town of Billings, Montana unites behind a Jewish family victimized because of their faith. When a skinhead throws a rock through young Isaac’s window because he displayed a menorah, he is confused and frightened. As the story of this act of bigotry and hatred spreads through town, the people of Billings react. Inspired by the Danish people during WWII, when King Christian wore a yellow star to signify solidarity with the Jews, they decide to display paper menorahs in their windows. Set at Christmastime, this is a story of love and tolerance overcoming hate and prejudice. Breaking Through
Before I started in the construction business, I didn’t think that you could deem a wall removable without consulting a structural engineer, but over the years I have figured out relatively simple ways to determine if a wall could be removed without paying for the high consultation of a professional. Now, remember this is just a list of rough guidelines to follow. There is a reason the Buildings Department requires plans for major renovations and it keeps the homeowners safety at its core. That being said, here are some things to look for when planning that New Year renovation. There are two main ways to tell which walls are load bear-

Knocking down a wall is a great way to create an open floor plan, or simply make a room larger. Many of us look at our homes and dream of the modern, open floor plan that we now see on many popular home improvement shows. After all, an open floor plan makes small houses seem larger with better flow, and makes large homes appear to go on forever. While I personally prefer an old style home with many walls and cramped hallways, most people I work for almost always are removing multiple walls. It still amazes me what kind of a difference this relatively simple change makes.

ing. The first is by looking in your basement and the other is looking from your attic. Lets start in the basement, as that requires the least amount of work. If you want to remove a wall on the first floor, the best place to start is in the basement, if you have one. If your basement is unfinished, look up at the ceiling and you will be looking at the floor joists. Ask yourself these questions: 1. Does the wall above run parallel to the joists you are looking at? If yes, it is most likely not a load-bearing wall. 2. Does the wall above run perpendicular to the floor joists? If yes, it is most likely a load-bearing wall. 3. In the basement, is there a wall, column or horizontal beam directly below the location of the wall? If yes, it is most likely a load-bearing wall. If you don’t have a basement, or have a finished basement that offers no clues, move to the attic. Even if the attic is not directly above the room you are redesign-

ing, you should still be able to learn which walls are load bearing. In the attic, look down at the ceiling joists and ask yourself these questions: Are the joists running parallel to the wall you’re looking to knock down? If yes, this is a good sign that the wall isn’t load bearing. Are the joists running perpendicular to the wall you’re looking to knock down? If yes, it is most likely a load-bearing wall. If you have no access from the basement or the attic the only other way you can find out what walls are load bearing, is by locating the original plans to your home. There are pages marked for structural, and will show you which way the joists are running. Remember these are only rough guidelines. Don’t grab your hammer until you are absolutely sure. Pickleball: New Craze Coming to the YMCA By Pete Tyler
“May the odds, be ever in your favor.” Has the Hunger Games come to the Rockaways? Not yet. But if you're looking for excitement, action, and all the visceral competition you can handle, then prepare for Pickleball! The Rockaway YMCA, beginning in January, will begin offering free instructional classes, so that not only members, but all residents can learn to play Pickleball. “Pickleball can best be described as a combination of tennis, table tennis, racquetball, and badminton, played on a small court a third of the size of a tennis court,” according to Rick Hopkins, Executive Director of the Rockaway YMCA at Arverne By The Sea. As an, ahem, middle-aged gentleman of limited athletic prowess, I wondered how I would fare in such an exciting game. Hopkins alleviated my fears, and told me he was in his 50’s, and he “liked the fact that the game allows fair competition between older adults and younger, more athletic players. This allows older players, players with mobility issues, and those without a sports background to be competitive right away.” Whew! In what seems to be a high-energy game, he assured me, it was easier than I thought. I imagined a Serena Williams-powered serve, making a fool out of me. Hopkins let me know the serve, for example, is “underhand, not overhand like in tennis. The return of serve must be allowed to bounce before volleying at the net is allowed. This makes sure that the ball gets into play easier and the rallies are longer.” It seems like the excitement of tennis, the ease of badminton, and the accessibility of handball have been mashed up into a brand new craze. Pickleball all started on Bainbridge Island, Washington, in 1972, at the home of then, State Representative Joel Pritchard. It seems as Pritchard and two friends returned home from playing golf, found the rest of the families bored to tears, and attempted to play badminton. stead, a Wiffle Ball was used, the nets lowered, and “fabricated paddles of plywood” were used from the family shed. Necessity being the mother of invention, family boredom moved lack of equipment into the realm of sports creation. How did Hopkins discover this exciting new sport? “I discovered Pickleball years ago when the sport of racquetball began to phase out, and YMCAs and health clubs were no longer building courts due to other programmatic demands. In fact, even though I was an avid racquetball player, I, at the risk of being called a traitor, converted several racquetball courts into weight rooms and exercise studios because the demand among members was much higher for those activities. A racquetball friend of mine told me about Pickleball, and invited me to play with him. I was hooked instantly. It was easy to learn and fun to
play.” Pickleball is a game for anyone. “While our initial focus is on active older adults, good candidates for Pickleball also include tennis players, racquetball players, paddleball players, or anyone who wants a fun, easyto-learn sport that will get them moving while also providing a social element. Men can play with women, old can play with young — this is the uniqueness and genius of Pickleball. Over the last couple of years we have inquired with almost any group or organization associated with the Y about their interest in Pickleball; most have never heard of it. We even ran an ad in the local papers asking for people interested in playing Pickleball to contact the Y… crickets! After monitoring the success at the Staten Island Y, we decided to give it a shot.” Hopkins is excited to bring the sport to the local area. “I think this is a great sport for YMCA
members and Rockaway residents because it fits right in with the Rockaway Y’s focus on providing healthy living choices for active older adults, and for those who are currently inactive who would like to change that as well. Recent demographic studies show that, among New York City YMCAs, Staten Island and the Rockaways serve the largest senior populations, as well as have the highest obesity and lowest fitness levels in the five boroughs. In the Rockaway Y’s less than four year history, we have continually strived to introduce new programs and services that meet the needs and desires of our members and the community.” During the month of January, the Rockaway Y will begin offering free instructional classes so that members and community residents can learn how to play the game. You don’t have to be a member of the Y to learn. They allow three free guest passes to community residents that will not only allow them to learn Pickleball, but also to enjoy other amenities such as two swimming pools, a state-of-the-art Fitness Center, group exercise classes and a full-sized gymnasium. Regular classes, open court time and challenge play could begin as early as February. Pickleball could be the next big trend in school gyms. It’s a sport that seems ripe for an addition to public school activities and sport teams. Addressing this commonality, Hopkins said, “We are going to take Pickleball ‘inter-generational’ by offering it at our Beacon Program operated out of PS/MS 43 in Far Rockaway. A Beacon is a school that transforms into a community center during after school hours and on weekends. We will be teaching young and old how to play the game. I see Pickleball as being ‘the next big thing’ to hit the Rockaways in terms of getting us up and moving while having fun, whether you prefer the competitive or social aspects of the sport.” See you on the courts, and may the odds be ever in your favor. Bonkers For Wave Pools The literal flood gates have been opened and the world has gone bat-shit-crazy for wave pools after the huge success of Kelly Slater’s Wave Co. and the Wavegarden technology, first released as a concept in Spain, but now commercially viable installations in Wales, UK and also in Texas called N-Land. What’s happening now is insane. While all three of the above mentioned wave pools use technology of basically pushing, or dragging, a monumental ballast in a linear motion to upheave the water to create a wall of water, it’s then up to the bathymetry (underlying surface contours) to “shape” the wave into a barrel or big open face for carving. The insane part is that they have broken ground in Australia for a wave pool that uses circular technology, like a pebble
dropped in a pond, with radiating waves going out in all directions. In an interview with Surfers Village, CEO and founder Aaron Trevis comments, “We are employing a concentric wave generator, creating large swells from a central source. The mechanism is large but quite efficient and it allows us to create eight breaks at the same time (four rights and four lefts).” One of the people signed up to endorse and help design the SurfLakes is non other than Mark “Occy” Occhilupo. Trevis says, “We have worked with Occy to shape the ideal wave and his input has been important to get a wave that should be challenging but accessible for intermediate to experienced surfers. Our team was being conservative with reef placement at first, as it has been seen before that full-scale wave pool models did not retain the wave shape and power when scaling up.

a huge project to transform a space near Paris to become the next European surfing hub. Similar technology of the Wavegarden dragging a ballast, but they’re using their new Cove technology, which creates an intense barrel. Looking to be constructed in Sevran, which is minutes away from Paris and close to the Charles-De-Gaulle airport, they figure they’ll have a huge audience for patrons. Caulonque says “Surfing, Terre D’Eaux Surf Park will offer skateboarding and wakeboarding possibilities. We are building a board-sports park with selected retail activities (incl. food and beverage) that can meet all needs: training, having fun, going to the beach, hanging around and hosting events including music.” With the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France, the big hope here is that they will use the Terre D’Eaux Surf Park to host Olympic surfing.

spectively. Finally Asha, Olivia and Isabel moved higher in Purple Rank. All the Karate-ka performed flawlessly to the delight of the spectators including parents and grandparents.
