Run Santa Sun If you saw a flurry of red suits and huffs and puffs of “ho, ho ho,” on the boardwalk or around town on Saturday, December 15, it wasn’t a hallucination after having too much eggnog. Santa came to town, and in droves, as part of the annual Santa Shuffle presented by Rockapuclo Runs. Participants gathered at Rockaway Gliders on Saturday morning to pick up their suits and numbers, before heading to the boardwalk via Beach 116th for a 5K of mile fun-run in the suit. They then met back at Gliders to enjoy some Santa snacks and Rockapulco Gold beer. By the looks of it, it Photos by Joan McGowan and was a merry time! Marcin Golynski.

White Christmas I’ve got a holiday jingle stuck in my head. Which I’ll get to later. So, ‘tis the season for gift-giving and I’ve gotta say, I’m not the man who has everything; I’m the man who really doesn’t want anything. For years, some people would get frustrated because they felt like they still had to get me something so I started saying, the only thing I need are socks and underwear. I figured you could never have enough of either. But that’s not true. As my socks and underwear

drawer overflowed, I realized there was a dangerous amount of tighty-whities. Yes, you can have too many of those in a hurry. In fact, if you have a single pair, you’re over the limit. The greatest thing since the dishwasher was the fashion breakthrough of boxer briefs. For decades, men had to endure the indignity of tighty-whities. No man, from Clark Gable to George Clooney to Brad Pitt, could look anything other than ridiculous in the underpants made for four-year-olds.
Other than the commando option, choices were slim. Briefs or boxers. Boxers failed on a couple of fronts. They were not snug, so to speak, and they’d bunch up when you pulled up your pants. You might as well have wrapped a bed sheet or a parachute around your waist. They didn’t look terrible — Oscar Madison rocked them — but they just weren’t functional, certainly not when you were exercising. You were pretty much stuck with tighty-whities. The choice wasn’t so much boxers or briefs, it was Fruit of the Loom or Hanes. And like Henry Ford said, you could get any color underwear as long as it was white. I finally had to declare that underwear was no longer a Christmas option — though some didn’t get the message and continued to give me tighty-whities like they were Hess trucks, a Christmas tradition. And I was stuck. It’s not like you can re-gift tighty-whities. I get why they did it. They looked at me and said, now there’s a guy who doesn’t care
how he dresses. His outerwear is worse than any underwear. I’ll give him the stupid-looking underwear and can check him off the list. Silly me would act grateful and happy and even surprised. I always thought that was the right thing to do. Ever see someone show clear dissatisfaction with a gift they get? Oh, it’s brutal. They eagerly tear off the wrapping to reveal a beautiful Louis Vuitton handbag and their face sags and they say that’s not the one they wanted. Or you get a guy a Callaway golf club and he says, I got one already. They couldn’t fake it for five seconds? Brutal. I can’t muse about gift-giving without giving credit to people who get you some weird piece of clothing that, at first, you wouldn’t be caught dead in. But months later, maybe years later, you start thinking, it’s not that bad. You finally wear it and then it becomes your favorite item of clothing. Meanwhile, that jingle stuck in my head? Have a tighty-whitey Christmas, it’s the best time of the year!

No One Harmed in Late-Night Bus Crash Story and Photos by Ryan Schwach
Late Tuesday night, December 18, a red pickup truck collided with an MTA bus on Beach 140th Street and Newport Avenue, damaging the pickup severely. Thankfully, there were no injuries. The security camera from an adjacent home captured as the red pickup crossed onto Newport Avenue, drifted over the yellow line and collided with the oncoming Q35 city bus, spinning
the pickup back across Newport and onto the lawn of the house that recorded the footage. According to a family member of the driver of the red pickup, he did not see the bus as they pulled onto Newport. The bus was carrying a few passengers, according to an MTA employee, neither them, the driver, or either of the two men in the red pickup were injured. “That’s the best you can hope for,” the MTA employee said.

The Knights of Columbus 'Keep Christ in Christmas’ By Kami-Leigh Agard
In the past few weeks, while shopping or hustling for a bus on Beach 116th Street, or flocking to numerous meetings and holiday events at Knights of Columbus (KOfC) Rockaway Council on Beach 90th Street, many of you may have stopped and admired a quaint nativity scene with beautiful carved figures, depicting baby Jesus laying on a manger at the center, flanked on each side by his mother, Mary and her husband, Joseph. On the nativity scene (also known as crib or crèche) is inscribed the words, “Keep Christ In Christmas.” Well, according to KofC former Grand Knight Richie Knott, the crèche with the four words, “Keep Christ in Christmas,” is not just a fanciful holiday decoration, but for Knights worldwide, serves a higher purpose: “To promote the true spirit of Christmas in our homes, schools, parishes and communities.” Founded in the U.S. in 1882, KofC is the world's largest Catho-
lic fraternal service organization with more than 1.7 million members in 14,000 councils worldwide. In April of this year, Msgr. William F. Burke Rockaway Council #2672 Knights of Columbus, boasting a membership of 750 members strong, celebrated its 90th anniversary serving the Rockaway community. According to Knott, the global Catholic fraternal order has led the “Keep Christ in Christmas” program since the early 1960s,
and from the inception, the Rockaway Knights have zealously followed suit. “With this message, we’re trying to remind not just Catholics, but all Christians that Christmas is a religious holiday,” he said. “It's not about shopping or commercialism. By keeping Christ in Christmas, we're just underlining the first six letters in the word, ‘Christmas,’ which symbolizes the birth of Christ and our faith as believers.” Originally organized by the
Christian Mothers of Milwaukee, later known as Council of Catholic Women, in Milwaukee, Wis., the effort was originally known as “Put Christ Back into Christmas.” Following that effort, worldwide, the Knights of Columbus adopted the “Keep Christ in Christmas” program in the early 1960s, and have been actively promoting it ever since. As part of the ‘Keep Christ in Christmas’ movement, councils worldwide hold a nativity scene lighting on the first Tuesday in December at 8 p.m. This year, just a few months ago, the Rockaway Knights experienced the loss of one of their dear brothers, Larry Kelly, who every year, constructed the beloved nativity scene, and had planned this year to rebuild, after it took a pounding after Sandy and years of subsequent use. “Larry’s passing was such a blow to us. He was a dedicated active member, who wholeheartedly gave his all to our organizaContinued on page 15

Crime Spree
The week leading up to Christmas was marred with some horrific crimes in Far Rockaway, including a rape and a murder. Early Sunday morning, December 18, police responded to a call of a sexual assault around Bayport Place and Augustina Avenue in Far Rockaway, according to ABC7. The call was received at around 4:30 a.m. A local 44-year-old woman was walking home
when she was pushed to the ground and raped by a suspect who later fled the scene. The woman was taken to the hospital. More horrific news occurred later Sunday morning when a body was discovered by a passerby in Bayswater Point State Park just before noon. The body appeared to be that of a man in his twenties. He was found only wearing socks and underwear and his body showed signs of trauma. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death of the young man. His death remains under investigation, and no arrests have been made, but the death has been ruled a homicide. It is not known if the incidents are connected. Anyone with information in regards to either of these crimes is asked to contact the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577TIPS (8477). Information can also be sent online at www. Local Doc Gets the Gift of a Family This Christmas By Katie McFadden
DNA Ancestry tests have grown in popularity in recent years. Some results may be unsurprising, like finding out you’re 99.9 percent Irish and maybe 0.1 percent Scandinavian. Or maybe you learned that you actually have some Native American ancestry. While those results might be a little less typical, imagine finding out that you have a family member that you didn’t know existed, maybe even a sibling, or in the case of local physician, Dr. Peter Galvin, finding out that you have not one, but seven brothers and sisters that you can now add to your holiday shopping list. In a true Christmas miracle, the well-known doc has found the greatest gift of all—family. In 1954, Galvin was adopted by loving parents, Mary and Andy Galvin. As their only child, they raised him as their own, sparing no expense, and motivating him to do well, by focusing on his studies rather than television, which Galvin credits for him later becoming a physician. As Irish Catholics, the Galvins instilled the love of their culture in him, which he fully embraced and went on to pick up the bagpipes and march in several St. Patrick’s Day parades. As the only family he knew, and a loving one at that, Galvin says he never pressed on asking them much about his background, and in the 1990s, they both died, taking any information about their adoptive son’s real identity to the grave. With New York adoption records bring heavily sealed and hard to open, the story of Galvin’s past was effectively buried. That was—until—home DNA tests came about. Galvin says he always had that curiosity about who he was, but as a physician, that curiosity grew since he knows the importance of knowing your own family’s medical history. “Family history is so important, especially when it comes to risk factors like heart disease and Alzheimer’s, so I was wondering if I was at risk and wanted to know more about my background,” Galvin said.
So about four years ago, he bought a 23andMe DNA test, which can offer both health and ancestry information through DNA testing. But answers came up short. “It didn’t really amount to anything. I found out I was from a Northern European and Scandinavian ancestry and occasionally I would get messages from people who might be a sixth cousin, but it never really went anywhere,” he said. One of Galvin’s daughters, Marybeth, convinced him to give it another shot by trying a different test, AncestryDNA. “I said, alright, nothing will come of it, but I’ll do it,” he said. Galvin took the test last summer. And on October 22 of this year, he received a message he never could have expected. “I got a message on Ancestry from a woman who said our DNA was extremely close, as in sibling close. She asked me when and where I was born and I wrote her back,” he said. Her response changed Galvin’s life forever. She wrote, “OMG, you’re my brother! We’ve been looking for you for decades.” “I was completely shocked. It’s something I never expected. To get any response at all is something and then when this came up, it’s like, holy moly, you’ve gotta be kidding me!” Galvin said. However it was no joke, and there was more. The sister, Betty, wasn’t the only sibling. Through speaking with her, Galvin learned that he not only had a sister, but five of them, and two brothers.

Along with the discovery of this new family, at 64 years old, Galvin learned the truth of his past and how he came to be adopted. “It turns out that my mother, whose maiden and married names were German, had four kids when her husband, who was in the Army, was sent to Korea. They lived on Long Island. While he was away, she had an affair and gave birth to me. I was put up for adoption. Her husband must’ve been a good guy because after he learned of the affair, they went on to have three more kids,” Galvin said. Of his birth dad, Galvin learned that he got his height and red hair from a man named Charlie. Galvin was told that his mother had always regretted giving him up and she told her children where he was born and what his name was, but they had the wrong name—Gavin—just one letter keeping his family from finding him before two siblings coincidentally took the same DNA test. Galvin learned that his mother died in 2014, so he didn’t have a chance to meet her, but it wasn’t long before he got to meet his newfound family of seven siblings. “For them, it was like finding a long lost brother they always knew they had, but for me, it was finding out that seven total strangers are all of a sudden my brothers and sisters. It’s difficult to wrap your head around,” Galvin said. But lucky for him, his new family was ready to welcome
him with open arms to wrap around him. About a month ago, Betty, who lives in Texas along with five of the other siblings, met up with a brother, Mike, who lives in North Carolina, and made the drive up to Rockaway to meet him. And last weekend, Galvin made the trip to Texas, where he found that everything is truly bigger there, including his family. “They invited me to their big Christmas party in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where I got to meet about 70 to 80 people. Not only did I get to meet the rest of my siblings, but I found that I’m an uncle to nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews that I never knew I had,” he said.
Meeting so many new family members was indeed overwhelming, but the family presented him with a cheat sheet that he got to bring home and study in preparation for the next reunion—a book with names and photos of all of the family members, inscribed with a message reading, “From the family you never knew. We all have loved you from the start.” For Galvin, getting to meet his family last weekend was nothing short of a miracle. “It seems like there’s some sort of guiding hand in all of this and the fact that it came around Christmastime made it even more amazing,” Galvin said. “This is the greatest Christmas present anyone could ever get.” And while Galvin will continue to celebrate being Irish (45 percent of his ancestry says his family hails from County Tyrone), he says he’ll also embrace his new German (nine percent) heritage. “I will have to trade in my kilts for lederhosen!” he said.

THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Continued from Page 10 tion. He took great pride in constructing the crèche, and this Christmas season has been a bit of a somber one without his presence,” Knott said. However, another brother, Tom Elges, a born and raised Rockaway ‘boy,’ who has been with the Knights for the last 12 years and also member of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians, humbly stepped in to continue Larry’s work. “This year was also especially tough for me, not just with Larry’s passing, but my two brothers also passed away. First, John Elges, a retired Long Beach volunteer fire captain and FDNY firefighter, who died on September 15 of 9/11-related cancer after a career with three bravery citations for searching for survivors at Ground Zero. Then, just less than a month after, my other brother, Robert, unexpectedly died. The Knights were a great support to me during this time, and are really a community-oriented organization. They
don’t just take care of their own, but the entire Rockaway community. The amount of people from all walks of life that enter these doors every day is truly amazing. “When Larry passed away, I wanted to continue his legacy of building the crèche. I’m a retired AT&T executive, but woodwork has always been a hobby of mine; and with fellow Knights brother, James Hurley, we got to work. We built the nativity scene outside the Knights’ home on Beach 90th and the one on Beach 116th, which is also sponsored by the organization. The message of ‘Keeping Christ in Christmas’ is significant because yes, we are faith-driven Catholics determined to make sure Christ is not exed out of Christmas, because after all, Jesus is the reason for the season. However, we are an organization that embraces everyone in the community,” Elges said. Also to spread their faith and belief in keeping Christ in Christmas, for a mere $5, the Knights are distributing car magnet nativity scenes, with the aim of spreading the message. “We only
charge $5 to offset the expenses of purchasing the magnets and supporting the Council’s future events. We would love to see the “Keep Christ in Christmas” nativity scene magnet on every car in Rockaway,” said Knights brother Mike Moran. It’s just about spreading what the true meaning of Christmas is all about.” The Knights motto is Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism; and according to Knott, their logo’s colors, red, blue and white really emphasize their dedication to their patriotic mission as a Catholic organization dedicated to the community they serve. For example in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, former Grand Knight Andy McCracken was instrumental in getting the Council’s doors open 45 days after the storm. “For two months day-in and day-out, Andy worked tirelessly to make sure we could
open our doors and be a support to Rockaway. The Knights were a focal point for the restoration of the community in supporting various nonprofits, civic and youth organizations that loss their home bases after Sandy. The Knights has always been a behind-the-scenes organization, though we support numerous organizations and nonprofits throughout Rockaway, we never want public praise, just results showing that Rockaway continues to be strong, viable and community-minded. “With our program to ‘Keep Christ in Christmas,’ we’re just trying to remind everyone that Christmas is not about shopping. It’s a day, we celebrate by giving gifts to each other because it is the day on which we celebrate the greatest gift of all: God’s gift of his son to the world,” Knott said. Word Up, Sean Dear Editor: Kudos to Factologist Sean McVeigh for the "contronym" definition. I was teaching my 5th-grade students about homonyms, synonyms, and antonyms and now I was able to introduce contronyms. That was a new one for this old teacher! Keep sharing the interesting facts Sean - you just helped educate our future leaders! Nancy Re Editor’s note: Factologist Sean McVeigh’s favorite column is We Get Email. Your letter will make his year. Thanks!
Beautiful! Dear Editor: Just want to mention how much my family and I enjoyed the evening Christmas Caroling event on 94th Street, (the Bandstand area) on Saturday, December 15, sponsored by House on the Rock Church! What a beautiful, heartwarming, old-fashioned event to bring to Rockaway for the holiday! It brought people together
The Rockaway Times feeling the warmth and love of the real Christmas spirit. Everyone singing Christmas Carols a la Karaoke was so beautiful. They even had a beautiful Nativity (nice for picture-taking). With all the negativity going on in this world today, this was needed for a little while of feeling peace on earth and the love of Jesus. The hot chocolate and cookies were an added treat! I hope they do it again next year! Lillian Agosto
Showtime Please Dear Editor: Now that Rockaway is becoming hip, very diverse, and open to all kinds of music, entertainment, contests, restaurants, plays, etc.; I think it’s time to bring back our own movie theatre. I wish some enterprising person would consider this as a possible money-maker. I for one miss our old movie theatre and sometimes I just wish I could jump in my car and drive five minutes to a movie theatre, rather than have the option of the UA in Sheepshead Bay, which is huge and crowded or going even further away to other theatres in Queens or Long Island. Anybody out there listening? PS — there could also be afternoon birthday parties with pizza and a show! Ruth Graves

Sands Point Physical Therapy Experienced, Professional, Compassionate What is Laser Therapy? Laser therapy uses a process called photobiomodulation. Photons enter the tissue and interact with the cytochrome c complex within mitochondria. This interaction triggers a biological cascade of events that leads to an increase in cellular metabolism and a decrease in both pain and inflammation.
Isn’t it the same as Ultrasound?
Does it Work? A review of 6 random controlled trials that included 860 individual patients and published in the peer reviewed medical journal The Lancet: “Laser therapy was found to immediately reduce neck pain AND maintained results up to 22 weeks after completion of treatment”

Keeping Ferry Riders ‘Good as They Go’ By Katie McFadden
As commuters walk on to the 7:15 a.m. ferry, with eyelids still heavy shortly after waking, they’re greeted by someone with eyes as bright as the morning sunrise and a smile to match. Concessions agent Betsy De Los Santos has been working the Rockaway route of NYC Ferry since the service launched in May 2017, and riding with more than 20 years of customer service experience, she knows how to brighten up the morning commute for riders with her positive attitude. But if that’s not enough, the coffee she specially prepares is guaranteed to give you the boost you need to start your day. It isn’t just the special touch she gives to her coffee that sets her apart, but the way De Los Santos goes above and beyond in all that she does on NYC Ferry. Greeting her regular customers by name and throwing in the occasional, “How are the kids?” comes easy as De Los Santos has gotten to know many of her customers on a personal level. After all, De Los Santos has known many of her customers since NYC Ferry service began in Rockaway. Although the born and raised Brooklynite has four children of her own, De Los Santos calls the Rockaway ferry her “baby.” And her customers are more than just a familiar face. “When I see my riders, I’m seeing my family. Everyone feels like family,” she said. Each day, she treats her “family” with extra care by making sure they’re “gonna be good as they go,” for the ride, and for the day ahead. Each early morning, De Los Santos begins her shift at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where she boards the boat and communicates with the deckhands and captain to ensure that everyone is on board
with what’s going on that day. Then she performs routine checks of the closets and storage spaces to make sure the boat is fully stocked with what’s needed and makes sure everything is safe. Although busy behind the counter selling coffee and other goodies during the commute, De Los Santos ensures her customers get fivestar treatment, by getting off the boat as they do, and greeting the next riders that come aboard, ready to answer any question that may be thrown at her. “People have 20,000 questions, so I make sure to have 20,000 answers,” she said, and De Los Santos certainly knows her stuff, so much so, that she is often responsible for training and mentoring new employees. Although she wakes up each morning at 1 a.m. to prepare for her shift that begins at 3:30 a.m., and still finds time to take care of her sons and even hit the gym after her shift, De Los Santos also makes time in her day to do personal research for her job. Whether it’s knowing how to connect to another ferry route, or recommending places to visit around New York City, since she’s personally been to them
or has seen them highlighted on travel channels, De Los Santos makes sure she has the answers that people need and those to questions people may not have even known to ask. Going above and beyond comes naturally to someone that truly enjoys what they do, and De Los Santos is one of those people. “I really enjoy every minute. I’m a people person. I have 20-plus years in customer service and one thing I really enjoy is making sure customers are gonna be good as they go,” she said. Rockaway Park resident George Ginacopulos, a regular rider of the 7:15 a.m. Manhattan-bound ferry, has seen firsthand, De Los Santos’ stellar service as a concessions agent. Ginacopulos is part of a group of commuters that sit near the ferry concession each day and consider De Los Santos to be a part of the group. “Betsy is something very special. The term rockstar comes to mind, as she goes far beyond in every way that she needs to be in her position. Every once in a while, you run across a person who takes a position and elevates it to another level and Betsy is one of those people. I consider her part of
the community and a friend. She’s a truly caring person and it shows because she truly enjoys what she does. She likes the interaction with people, she’s organized, she keeps things together and she’s gone above and beyond,” Ginacopulos said. “The ferry commute is a good one but it’s the cherry on top when you have somebody there that represents the ferry system as Betsy does.” Another reason De Los Santos goes above and beyond is because she knows what it’s like to be limited. For many years, she suffered from a severe seizure disorder. “It was extremely serious,” she said, adding that she had as many as eight seizures one summer, which urged her to take back control of her life. “I became a chosen candidate for brain surgery. There were as many as 30 doctors interested in my case,” she said. In 2006, De Los Santos went through with the surgery and hasn’t had a seizure since. For De Los Santos, having the surgery was a new lease on life. “Once you go through something really big like that, you feel like you’re born again. You see the world so differently,” she said. In return for overcoming the disorder, she returns to see her doctors and gives inspirational speeches to patients going through what she endured with her condition and surgery. “I always tell them don’t give up, there’s always hope, and where there’s a will, there’s a way,” she said. De Los Santos’ way is making sure her customers start their day on the right foot. “My main priority is to make sure everyone is safe, they enjoy the ride and they start their day on a positive note,” she said. And lucky for riders, De Los Santos says she plans on riding along for the long run. “I’m staying here for a long time,” she said.

RBAF Warms Hearts for The Holidays Last Thursday, December 13, Rockaway Beach Autism Families (RBAF) kicked off the holiday season on a pitch-perfect merry note with the group’s First Annual Holiday Gathering at the Knights of Columbus. Parents, caregivers, friends and loved ones on the autism spectrum celebrated together with food, fun and of course, gifts. Thanks to The Best Dressed Man in Rockaway aka Owen Loof, everyone walked home with a RBAF tote bag, a belly full of delicious food and a variety of gifts, including four tickets to see an exclusive autism-friendly production of Aladdin the Broadway Musical, produced by the Theater Development Fund, (a not-forprofit organization dedicated to bringing the performing arts to everyone, including those with special needs). Local businesses, Ocean Bliss Yoga Studio, NutureU Wellness, Burn Fitness, Pico, RBQ’s and Whit’s End generously donated gift certificates to the
gathering’s free raffle. When the children found out they had won a gift, their squeals of delight were priceless. According to RBAF founder (also Rockaway Times reporter and columnist), Kami-Leigh Agard, there are many others, who were integral to the success of the group’s first holiday gathering. “I want to give a colossal shoutout to RBAF’s core team, Kathy Ryan, Christine Dydzuhn, Rojo Rafiringa, Rado Rafiringa and Jane Garfield Frank, who all rolled up their sleeves and worked hard to make this event extra special for our autism community. Also an extra special thank
you to The Best Dressed Man in Rockaway for generously supporting our efforts, including our being able to donate towards Rockaway resident, Laura O’Connor Leonard’s quest to head to China with the Global Autism Project. Another blessing was Richie Knott and all the gentlemen of the Knights of Columbus, who lovingly opened their doors to us, no holds-barred. It would be impossible to list everyone who supported, but also a special thanks to RBAF member
Matt Woolf, who made sure we were all hydrated, and young William Hernandez, who impressed everyone with his deli-
cious lasagna,” Agard said. For local resident, Dia SPastrikos, a mom of four, with two on the autism spectrum, RBAF’s holiday gathering touched a tender chord. “For both caregivers and our loved ones on the autism spectrum, holidays can be, at times, an isolating experience. It was nice to be around people that understand…and there is a sense of freedom in that, which is a gift in itself,” SPastrikos said. CVSR Students Step Toward the Future Several Channel View students took steps toward their future last week. On Friday, December 14, the Channel View School for Research (CVSR) senior class participated in NYC Outward Bound’s College March and spent the afternoon mailing off their college applications in the hopes of making it into their dream schools. As an NYC Outward Bound school, each year, CVSR Seniors participate in a ceremony where they march around campus and hand over their college applications to the USPS, to be sent off to the schools of their choice. Students from the lower classes stand on the sidelines to cheer their fellow classmates on. Senator Joe Addabbo was also there to cheer the students on and celebrate with them in their big step toward their
future. “I love attending these College Marches every year, Addabbo said. “It is really a great experience, especially for the seniors because it is a time of such hope and aspiration for them as they anticipate their future prospects. One of my favorite parts of the entire march is that the younger students are involved and they cheer the seniors on with signs and fanfare, which encourages the other students to apply for college when they become seniors. After the march, the students, faculty, and invited guests were treated to performances by Channel View’s dance team, step team, and choir. “I would like to thank NYC Outward Bound Schools and the event’s sponsor Capital One for making this march possible for thousands of seniors across the city, Addabbo said. “I look forward to keeping this great tradition alive for many more classes of seniors. All the best to the Class of 2019 as they move toward their dream of going to college.

By Beth Hanning Trying to Be Merry This Christmas season I would like to wish a Merry Christmas to the following groups of people: The department in New York City that is responsible for planning the roadwork that is done throughout the Rockaway peninsula. Not only have they completely ruined the roads, they have taken away parking spots on the bay block of Beach 117th Street and Beach 119th. My husband says that they will
have to fix the roads they have ruined, but the spot on Beach 101st was never repaired after it was ripped up for some type of pipe issue. Hopefully they will be done by the summer when the real traffic arrives and hopefully the roads will be repaired. The department in charge of planning the Marine Parkway Bridge closures and construction. I know I have said it many times in past columns, but we built the Empire State
Building in less time than it is taking to repair this bridge. I do not even commute often to Brooklyn, but of course the one night you are coming home late from Manhattan (on a school night) and the Waze app says you will arrive home at midnight, then as you get closer to exit 11S, the app changes to 12:45 because you have to go to exit 17S for Cross Bay Boulevard and go the long way. I hope their New Year’s resolution is to stop closing the bridge. The Metropolitan Transit Authority for changing the Q22 bus route. The bus route that had been in place for as long as my 46-year-old self can remember. With parking a huge issue already in the neighborhood, they decided to take away parking spots on Beach 116th Street once they rerouted the bus route. In addition to taking away parking spots, it causes traffic to back up to at least Beach 120th Street at busy times of the day and usually on weekends. Merry Christmas to the pri-
vate ambulance companies who blare their siren louder than the New York City ambulances. One day I am going to follow you and see what the big emergency is at the Gloria Manor. A very serious and sincere Merry Christmas to the flag guy who has been working on West 13th Road and Cross Bay Boulevard. Even though I am inconvenienced and have to merge into one lane, his dancing and waving make it something I enjoy each day while coming home from work. Merry Christmas everyone.

THE GIFT OF SPENDING TIME Time is priceless. There is no monetary value we can put on spending time, or time spent or time to be spent. Gifts are gifts. Making a date with someone to spend time, being together or doing something together is precious and priceless. Write a note in a card to say one hour together having lunch or taking a walk or cooking something or whatever—the gift of being present with someone— one-on-one—in the here and now. Being fully, totally present
is a present. And it may become something you do, not only once as a gift, but periodically during the year. Connection and spending time in our world has become one thing to fit in to a demanding life schedule. It should be the opposite: we should have time to spend with people and then fit in everything else! So if you are obliged to give a gift to say, someone who has everything, why not replace a thing with a date to spend time? If you give a lot of gifts to kids,
why not make one of them a gift of spending time and marking it on the calendar? Creating a special event that doesn’t cost a whole lot of money. Simple. What people really need is to connect with each other and help each other to navigate through life in a meaningful way. Not to have the up-overlast-year’s model of some electronic or another thing to put on the shelf. Not just to get more, be more, have more, but to nourish the person within by being with others. That is a great gift. Spending meaningful time is not only a gift to the other but to ourselves. And while we’re at it, why don’t we give the gift of spending time with ourselves? Taking a day once a week, once every two weeks, once every month, to be alone to let arise what will— to gain some understanding of something going on, or to enjoy something or to contemplate something or to just be present with the self. Thinking about turning negativity to positivity, thinking about making a difference in someone’s life, thinking about creating something,
writing something, reading a life-changing book, nurturing the who we are within to become happy and whole so that when we are giving the gift of spending time with someone, we are peaceful, stable, happy, insightful, grounded, and in the moment—moment by moment. These experiences—being with someone one-on-one spending time, being with ourselves spending time—are very fulfilling. They fill up our inner selves. Take a moment to notice what it feels like when you are tuned in and spending time fully, totally, openly with someone and also when you are allowing yourself to be with you. Slow down, be present with whomever you are with, be aware, notice everything, think a positive thought, and if a negative one arises, replace it with a positive one. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace. May the new year bring peace, joy, love and light into your heart.

A Bad Idea
Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
I have previously written about synthetic cannabinoids. These are laboratory-synthesized drugs of abuse, commonly referred to as “K2” or “spice.” They are designed to induce a calming sensation, while stimulating creativity and euphoria. Their use was first reported in Europe in the early 2000s and rapidly spread worldwide. They contain large amounts of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. Some estimates put the THC content as high as 40 percent. Most forms are undetectable by traditional screening and the manufacturers market them as “not for human consumption” in order to avoid prosecution. They are psychotropic drugs and have multiple, severe side effects. The side effects usually seen with acute synthetic cannabinoid intoxication include agitation, psychosis, cognitive impairment, respiratory de-
pression, elevated blood sugar levels, elevated white blood cell counts, tachycardia, and hypertension. Every now and then the media reports on outbreaks of synthetic cannabinoid intoxication. These outbreaks often include a number of deaths. The deaths are often caused by respiratory depression or hemorrhagic complications including cerebral hemorrhage. A few months ago, a study was published, which finally explained the hemorrhagic complications. The study, done earlier this year at Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois, looked at patients brought to the emergency department (ED) for acute synthetic cannabinoid intoxication. They examined the blood samples of these patients for the presence of anticoagulants, as many of the patients were having bleeding complications. The blood samples revealed the presence of brodifacoum, difenacoum, bromadiolone, and

warfarin. While the reader may not recognize the first three compounds (don’t feel bad – I didn’t recognize them either), most readers have heard of warfarin (Coumadin). The first three compounds are all blood thinners related to warfarin but are not used in humans. The presence of these compounds in the patients’ blood explained the hemorrhagic complications, including cerebral hemorrhage, that were being seen in these patients. There were a number of deaths, almost all related to cerebral hemorrhage. When warfarin is used as an anticoagulant, the level of warfarin is measured by drawing blood to measure the international normalized ratio, or INR. A therapeutic INR for someone on warfarin is usually between two and three. To put this into perspective, when these patients presented to the ED, the average INR was 15.8, which is equivalent to severe warfarin toxicity, a medical emergency. INR levels that high are usually seen in children who have acci-
dentally ingested warfarin and adults who have purposely ingested it. Intravenous vitamin K was administered to treat the warfarin toxicity. The authors of the study then asked the obvious question – where did the anticoagulants come from? They went out and purchased a number of samples of these drugs, including one called “Diablo.” Sure enough, the anticoagulants were present in varying amounts in every sample they tested. It turns out that the growers of the drug plants were using rat poison to protect their crops from rodents. The main ingredient in rat poison is warfarin and/or the other three compounds found in the blood samples. So, in essence, if people choose to smoke or inhale these products, they are essentially smoking rat poison! To me at least, that seems like a very bad idea. HO HO HO
Only a few more days until the big fat man with the long white beard makes his appearance in each of our homes during the wee hours of December 25. I am referring, of course, to Santa Claus and his annual visit to all good little girls and boys early on Christmas morning. I am particularly looking forward to the big guy's visit this year as I have
been working overtime to welcome him to West 12th Road in the most politically incorrect fashion possible. The first thing Santa will see after he emerges from his trip down our chimney is my own little "Elf on the Shelf" who I have named "Snoopy." For those of you who have not read the book, every night "Snoopy" flies back to the North Pole to give Santa the day’s lowdown on who’s been naughty and who’s been nice in the Mahon household. The next morning, the elf is perched in a new spot that your child has to look for– it’s basically a mash-up of an Advent calendar countdown and a game of Hide ‘n Seek. I love the fact that liberals hate the "Elf on a Shelf" popular book and doll set, as they have convinced themselves that this tradition indoctrinates children into accepting surveillance as a normal fact of life, ensuring that future restrictions on their privacy

might be more easily accepted. Personally, I am not worried about this at all, as I simply tell Alexa every night not to allow "Snoopy" out of the house! The next thing that Santa will probably notice are the voices of Zooey Deschanel and Leon Redbone singing their rendition of "Baby It's Cold Outside," the lyrics of which have turned into a hot potato for broadcasters, some of which have yanked the popular song on the grounds that the lyrics are predatory toward women. Today, the world we now live in is extra-sensitive, populated as it is with easily melted (offended) snowflakes, who complain that this song has absolutely no place in their safe-space world. On my flat screen TV, hung on the wall with care, I have the sound muted as my all-time favorite Christmas movie, Bruce Willis' (1998) "Die Hard," plays in the background! Although the film is quite entertaining, some snowflakes argue that
the film's stereotypes are both dated and offensive. The cold war film takes full advantage of German stereotypes with its gigantic creepy Aryan villains. After spending a few minutes listening to the velvet and gravel voices of Zooey and Leon, while watching Big Bruce mow down the terrorists, Santa's attention will inevitably be drawn to our Christmas tree, which I have liberally decorated (pun intended) with those offensive Christian icons of the holiday season, red and white striped candy canes. And why, pray tell, (again pun intended) are these sugary dentist delights offensive? Because, according to our social justice warriors out there, historically, the candy cane's shape is 'J' for Jesus and then to make matters worse, the red stripe is the blood of Christ, and the white stripe is a symbol of his resurrection. As far as the snowflakes are concerned, when the stone rolled Continued on page 31

BETWEEN THE BRIDGES Continued from Page 30 away from the cave's entrance and Jesus walked outside from his tomb, it meant nothing, as they are quick to point out, there were no tweets or YouTube videos to support it! After Santa finishes his work at the house and gets ready to fly away, he will be greeted with the visages of two of my other favorite Christmas characters, Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer and Charlie Brown. In case you didn't know, the miserablists among us have deemed the story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer as a parable on racism and homophobia with Santa as an exploitive employer. Santa’s (toy shop) operation is an HR nightmare and in serious need of diversity and inclusion training. There is also Rudolph’s father, Donner, who verbally abuses him, forcing him to wear a fake nose to cover his glowing schnoz. Rudolph’s pals call him names,
and his coach ices him, telling the others that old Red Nose can’t join in the reindeer games. The show bristles with bigotry, too, in Rudolph’s friendship with the doe, Clarice. Clarice’s father, a nose-ist, breaks them up saying, “No doe of mine is going to be seen with a red-nosed reindeer. Sexism is so blatant, it may require more delicate viewers to seek counseling.
After Rudolph runs away with an elf, Donner leaves to search for them. He tells his wife she can’t come because “This is man’s work. Rudolph is bad enough, but "Charlie Brown's Christmas Special" is a horse of a different color. It clearly violates the modern standards for inclusivity. There is mockery of mental health issues (Lucy’s fake psychiatric stand that panders
to Charlie Brown’s holiday depression), green issues (Charlie Brown’s small, dumpy tree was harvested/slaughtered in a blow to responsible environmental preservation), lack of diversity (the characters are white, even Snoopy the dog), sexist stereotypes and gender roles (Lucy insisting she be “Christmas Queen, Sally with a heart-bubbling crush on Linus), and cruelty to animals (Snoopy sleeping atop an unheated doghouse in winter). But all of these fade when the worst of the show is considered: Linus' on-stage soliloquy, reciting an account of Christ’s birth from Luke’s Gospel, King James version. How offensive. Sticking religion into a religious holiday to explain the true meaning of Christmas. We are poisoning the minds of children! Why the next thing you know America will be a theocracy run by fascists who force us to eat Chick-fil-A and not work on Sundays...Good Grief! Wink, wink!....Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

The Literary Chick Review: Lily Morris Lily Morris’ art will be featured in Bird Box, By Marilyn Macron, as the work Esq. aka of the characMaria Cowhey ter played by Sandra Bullock, set to premier December 21 on Netflix. TLC speaks with the artist. TLC: What do you think the purpose of art is? LM: The purpose of art is limitless and different for everyone. It’s a receipt of your life force, a map, a fantasy world, a mirror... so many things. If you’re asking what the purpose is for me, right now? In this 4 a.m. online chat with my brilliant friend Michael Corvo, he distilled a sentiment that I can really relate to. “I just think the way to fight superficial goal-oriented media-driven living is to make art that recognizes the vulnerability of the solitary human spirit.” TLC: Your show, American Dream, featured hyper realistic paintings of icons with a singu-
lar disturbing element shattering that dream. Why? LM: I wanted to depict images where one element brings the entire story and nature of the scene into question. A person betrays the fantasy of luxury by being totally depleted or internally deprived. The ultra-modern dream home with its chlorinated pool intended to replicate nature, creates problems for the actual nature that lives around it. And yet these luxurious places are feats of human effort, they’re beautiful and places I would dream of living in myself. I made these paintings as a way to think further about shared cultural aspirations. TLC: What feelings do you hope to arouse in people who view your work? LM: My ultimate goal is to have other people see my work and reach into their own bank of experiences, their own thoughts, feelings, and realizations. We all share moments of intimacy and questions about the future, I’m just a person asking other people
through imagery, have you felt anything like this? Am I alone here? TLC: Your paintings seem to be reality superimposed with unreality. What led you to formulate that cerebral contradiction? LM: The simple fact that no one knows what life is and the experience of being alive is so ever changing, I’m confident that they hold equal merit and are often the same. TLC: You’ve had a history of slashing your canvases. Why leads to that kind of expression, or rather, destruction? LM: If it’s a weak composition, instead of pushing through because I can, I’d rather make that impossible and be freed to start something that’s more clear. TLC: What is a typical day in the studio for you? LM: -Coffee -YouTubing videos of animals
and insects -Screenshots of textures or colors I love -Checking in with the other vampire painters I’m connected with through social media -Putting on a podcast to hear another human voice while I get ready to paint -Tricking myself into starting by doing one small “fix,” six hours later I’m ready to stop -Sitting on my steps outside and looking at the sky -Wandering around the garden lifting the bowed heads of my monster sunflowers -Feeling like an alien -Imagining the people I love and laughing out loud like a crazy person -Laying in different strange configurations among the trash of my studio and looking at my work, either elated or filled with despair. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan and bake 50-60 minutes. Insert a toothpick in the center of the bread and if it comes out clean, it’s ready. Happy Holidays From The Writer's Club of PS/MS 114 GIFTS MONEY CAN’T BUY Life’s greatest treasures are gifts money can’t buy. Strawberry sunsets in blueberry skies. A rainbow of autumn leaves covering the ground. A winter wonderland of evergreens dressed in lacy veils of dazzling white. Hillsides bonneted with springtime flowers. Family and friendship. And, as I sit at my dining room table surrounded by poems and essays and stories, the faces of their authors rise before me, more beautiful and wonderful than a billion suns. These kids are truly gifts money can’t buy. Happy Holidays! – Joan Diehl CHRISTIAN MOORE I’m just a kid, so I can’t help it when I am constantly asking for things. It feels like I am always looking to get something from my parents, especially my mom. It’s, “Mom, can you make me breakfast? Can you drive me to wherever? Can you please get the ketchup? Can you go food shopping?” The word “MOM” is so often used by my siblings and me. I cannot afford much, because I am obviously just a kid, but I want my mom to have something money can’t buy. I want something for her that would mean a lot to me. I want JOY for my mom. My mom works a lot, she wakes up at 5 o’clock every morning and works all day. She is a physical education teacher. Her mom passed away and she has gone through surgery. She cries a lot because she can’t get over that her mom passed away. When she does cry, I look at her and tell her- “Don’t.” She stops for me. I just want her to be happy and have joy in her life. The way I give her joy is by thanking her a lot, telling her that I love her, hugging her, kissing her forehead, spending time with her and doing the dishes. These are the gifts that money can’t buy, but for mom, they are priceless.

From the
NPS By Audrey Bartow
What do we think of when we hear that winter has arrived? How does it make us feel? What if we chose to think of the solstice, not as a leaving of warmth, but a coming of light? While tomorrow night will be the longest of the year (more than 14 hours, here in New York), every night will get shorter from there, and every day will get longer. If the arrival of winter brings you a feeling of dread or despair, I hope that I might be able to show you this season from another perspective. And if you already love winter, then rejoice. Tomorrow can be a celebration. Cathy Johnson, in her book, "The Nocturnal Naturalist,” says, “(In winter), we have to look hard for signs of life. But life there is if we take the time to see it.” If you are a nature observer like me, you may sometimes feel frustrated by the lack of apparent wildlife in winter. Cathy Johnson mentions this as well and she gives us some food for thought. She says, “In the absence of more easily achieved observations, weather itself becomes the subject. Water presents itself in more ways in the winter. In addition to rain, we can experience winter water as frost, snow, sleet, and freezing rain.” If we like, we can take time to have a more childlike appreciation. We can use all five of our senses to better observe it. When was the last time you caught a snowflake on your tongue? We can even make snow ice cream, by mixing a bowl of fresh snow with a can of sweetened condensed milk. It’s an instant dessert and it tastes great! Now just because we spend more time noticing the weather, doesn’t mean there isn’t wildlife to see if we look closely. With fewer hours of daylight, and chilly temperatures, we tend to spend more time

Winter Solstice: Start Appreciating The Longest Night of the Year indoors. We are not alone. Much of the wildlife of the region is also going inward. It is a time to live simply and to plan for warmer months. But have we actually been looking to nature for guidance? Let’s start with hibernation. While bears may be most famous for hibernation, we’re not likely to find them around here. We do, however have a few resident hibernators including bats, woodchucks, garter snakes and box turtles. We can look to animals who insulate their homes or even themselves. Mice who gather straw and bits of string and wool to make soft, warm nests. Mammals whose fur coats get thicker (and warmer). Birds who fluff up their feathers to protect themselves from wind and chill. There are those, like squirrels (and me), who stock up on food and necessities for the winter. And there are those like most everyone (and also me), who are generally passive for a few months, trying not to expend precious energy. And while all this turning in and stashing away may mean that winter animals are harder to see, there is another way that we might be able to notice them. We can listen for them. In a calendar year in NYC, it is possible to observe eight species of owls. Jamaica Bay is no exception and winter time is the absolute best chance we have. Owls are known for being elusive, they are masters of camouflage and most often nocturnal. But when the evening comes, they give themselves away by calling out. Great horned owls have been heard calling at the Wildlife Refuge and I invite you to take a listen, if you can. Lastly, we come to perhaps
the most spectacular sight, a winter sunset. While the palate of the landscape is mostly dull, winter sunsets more than make up for that by wildly contrasting with the grays, browns, and whites. In fact, sunrise and sunset are some of the only chances we have
in winter to see dazzling color. Our solstice sunset will be at 4:31 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, December 21, and Jamaica Bay will be an incredible place to see it, should the weather hold up. When the sun has set, and the last of the color has faded away, and we walk out into the longest night of the year, I once again turn to Cathy Johnson who said, “If I am willing to pay the price of cold extremities, and a bit of discomfort, I find a wildness in these winter nights.” Happy solstice and welcome, winter. Join Ranger Audrey in viewing the beautiful solstice sunset on a Winter Solstice Sunset Walk at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge at 3 p.m. on December 21. Call 718-318-4340 for more information.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS Continued from Page 38 one of the most important things around. A few years ago, my aunt was given the gift of life at Christmas. This is truly a gift that money can’t buy. My aunt suffered from breast cancer; her body was under fire. She was often very sick, but did not let it show. She was as strong as an ox. She felt worried and scared and cringed when she looked in the mirror to see a person she hardly knew. Even though she was scared, she battled the disease. It was at times, a downhill battle. I imagine her future looked grim, almost as black as night. She persevered, she fought, and she survived. She was given a second chance and an opportunity to live. She and her family were granted a gift money can’t buy. SOPHIA MAZZUCHIN Dear Santa, I know when I was younger I sent you letters all the time and then I

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2018 stopped. This time this letter is really important. This time I don’t want gift cards or games. This time I want something else. Something that only you can grant me. Something that is magical, I mean really magical. This time I want a magical pencil like Harry Potter’s wand. This magical pencil will allow me to create the best stories, like JK Rowling. The stories I create with this wand will become famous in only one month. The books I write with this wand will win awards that no other author has won. Only you can grant me this wish. So please, it’s the only thing I want for Christmas.

Merry Go Around of Memories
Last week’s Rockaway ‘Ol Times feature of Nunley’s Carousel sparked some nostalgia for some. In response, Shaun Reen sent us the following: “The photo of Nunley's Carousel brought back many memories from when I rode it as a young boy. There is a carousel on Sunrise Highway from Nunley but I believe that one was from Canarsie. I'm not sure if Rockaway's carousel had a future after Playland, but I did have the chance to bring my kids to the one in Baldwin. Here is a picture of a young Michael Reen with his first crush, Kiera Savage, on the Baldwin carousel.
