What’s Up With the Marine Parkway Bridge?

The Marine Parkway Bridge closes so often overnight during the week, that it almost seems expected. Yet for those who don’t work the regular nine to five, or those with late-night holiday plans, many are simply fed up with the disruptive routine.

The Rockaway Times recently reached out to MTA Bridges & Tunnels to get the latest on the work being done to Rockaway’s connection to Brooklyn. Over the past two years, various work has been taking place on and around the Marine Parkway Bridge, which has been in operation since July 3, 1937. The 80-year-old struc-

ture has been in need of some TLC (tender loving care), as the last upgrade was in 2001, and the MTA has been diligently following through with repairs, ever so slowly. According to the MTA, the latest work being done, contributing to necessary overnight closures is for upgrades on the lift mechanism of the lift span of the bridge. For weeks on end, the MTA has released announcements about weeknight closures, to carry out the work during hours that impact the least amount of people. Yet many have still felt the effects as traffic is regularly diverted to the Cross Bay Bridge, including the Q35 bus route. The latest round of closures continues through the morning of Friday, December 22. Democratic District

Leader Lew Simon claims he helped relieve the burden slightly during the closures that have been even more inconvenient during the holidays. The bridge closures had been set from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m., Monday through Friday. After receiving many complaints, Simon reached out to the MTA at the end of last week to ask for some more wiggle room during the holiday season. The MTA complied and the recent closings have begun at midnight, giving commuters an extra hour to cross the bridge. The MTA has not yet announced another round of closures, but residents can expect it to continue into the new year. At this time, the MTA expects the overnight closures on weeknights to continue in 2018. When will it all be

over? The MTA wouldn’t say, as the completion date is up in the air since construction is dependent on the weather. Additionally, on November 28, there was a small electrical fire on the bridge, forcing it to close for a few hours. However, this hiccup also caused construction to be delayed for a couple weeks, the MTA said. In the meantime, the MTA asks everyone to continue to be patient. “We appreciate the patience of our neighbors and customers as we work to upgrade and modernize the Marine Parkway Bridge, the necessary upgrades will allow us to serve our customers for decades to come,” an MTA spokesperson said. When the property was bought and plans for a hotel got underway, the owners of the cell tower maintained rights through a lease agreement to keep the cell tower on the property. So… the cell tower has been put on the street so construction can get underway, and is likely to be there for 16 months or so. Why so tall? It has to clear the building when completed – though the tower will be a good 50 feet above the planned 70-foot hotel. And yes, DOT and Buildings have given the green light on the unique placement. ***** Post Office gripes. Maybe it’s the time of year, but we hear the Rockaway Park Branch ran out of stamps (again) and not enough people were working the windows during the last week’s crush. From our experience, the people who do work the windows are great.

The stamps thing seems to be out of their control. ***** The Marine Parkway Bridge closes overnight weeknights from MIDNIGHT til 5 a.m. through December 22. Lew Simon says he urged the MTA to change the closure from 11 p.m. The extra hour helps people go to and fro in these busy holiday times. The MTA has not announced plans beyond December 22. Since Lew knew about the change before the MTA ever posted it, we have to give credit where credit is due. Nice work, Lew. ***** No comment. Did you know the mayor was in Iowa on Tuesday? Cell Tower Not Well Received By Katie McFadden

Can you hear me now? We’re not sure if reception got any better, but the new cell phone tower near Beach 109th on Rockaway Beach Drive looks like it could connect you to Mars. Last week, demolition finally began at the site of the future Rockaway Beach Hotel, yet a new, rather large cell phone tower, placed in the street temporarily, is raising some eyebrows, and heads. The old Dalton’s building started to come down as a new 100-plus foot cell tower arose above Rockaway Beach Drive near Beach 109th Street last week. The large structure caught nearby neighbors, business owners and passersby off guard. Chatter among social media groups included concerns about placing a cell phone tower so close to Waterside Children’s School. Yet a cell phone tower has been near the site for many years. The former cell phone tower, which was located in the parking lot of Dalton’s, was

shorter and disguised to look like a flag pole, so some were not aware that a cell tower was there, but it was a major cause for delays in the Rockaway Beach Hotel project. According to a project manager for JBS Project Management, the contractor behind the hotel project, T-Mobile, the carrier that owns the tower, refused to budge on moving it to a different location on the peninsula. Since construction couldn’t take place until the tower was dealt with, a compromise was made, resulting in a new tower being placed temporarily on the street on Rockaway Beach Drive. Those on the block say the

new tower was a surprise. Staff at nearby businesses including Boardwalk Bagel and Healy’s, said that they were never given a heads up about the tower, which initially caused Rockaway Beach Drive to be closed to traffic. “I went to turn down the block for work and was turned away. Nobody told us this would be happening and that parking would be taken away,” a Healy’s bartender said. The project manager claims that the Department of Buildings and the Department of Transportation gave the okay on the placement. However, there were some initial issues. “DOT has inspected the location and issued a number of violations, and we are continuing to review the condition and are actively working with Community Board 14,” a DOT spokesperson said. The project manager said that they were aware of the issues, one of which included not leaving an 11-foot traffic lane open. As of Wednesday, December

20, the lane was opened up and traffic was being allowed through, with brief stops as construction was ongoing. The cell phone tower is expected to remain in the street for at least 16 months as construction continues on the hotel. “Sixteen months is a long time the Healy’s staffer said. The project manager is aware of the inconvenience. “As soon as the top floor is done, we’re going to put the tower back on the building and it’ll be out of the street. We didn’t want this either. It’s massive and tough to work around and we tried to get it relocated. This was the last hurdle we had to overcome to start construction. Our biggest goal is to accelerate this project as much as we can so we can get this off the street. We’re excited about the hotel because it’s such a cool thing coming here,” he said. A Train Equality Dear Editor: I sent this letter to Eric Ulrich. During this repair period when Far Rock residents no doubt suffered and cursed, we here in Rockaway Beach got a taste of real train service. Hon. Councilman Ulrich: I’m writing the sentiments of ALL riders of the S (shuttle train) from Rockaway Beach/ Park who depend on it to connect us to the A for our jobs and our lives. During the track repair work, we experienced what life could be like if our areas of the peninsula were allotted service as they deserve. The community

of Rockaway Beach experienced a sense of ease, peace, security - it was Amazing! I know you’ve said: it’s simple numbers that has Lefferts so far better served than us. Maybe those numbers should be run again. If the S train were to follow every arriving A (direction Rock Park), I suppose we could live with it. But as you well know and we await endlessly for some explanation, it does not work that way. Sometimes an S comes within 5-7 minutes. Sometimes we wait 20 minutes. What is that about? Should not the shuttle link each arriving A’s passenger load with their next needed station stops on their way home? Someone shared that the S drivers/conductors are on a separate contract and they may only work a certain number of minutes per hour. And that this accounts for some of the brutal wait times we experience here. Yet more puzzling is when we get an S to Broad Channel

and wait for an A (a scheduled A) and wait and wait and‌another Shuttle arrives to Broad Channel and only after that will an A to Manhattan arrive. Not to be clever but really what’s that about? 100% Affordable Green Building Unveiled in Edgemere After much anticipation, on Wednesday, December 20, Councilman Donovan Richards, together with the NYC Department of Housing Preservation (HPD) and the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), unveiled a 100 percent affordable housing building, Beach Green Dunes on Beach 44th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. The development is a "passive certified building,” featuring solar panels and windows that block drafts to help make it energy efficient. There's also a gym, laundry room and other amenities. In a Twitter post, HPD tweeted, “One of the largest multifamily #passivehouse buildings in the country, Beach Green embodies the vision of our Resilient Edgemere Plan.”

According to HPD, Beach Green Dunes, opened up its application for affordable studio to three-bedroom apartments in the Fall of 2016. A total of 50,219 people applied, for roughly 100 apartments. With the beautiful ocean view and 100 percent affordable housing with green living standards, Beach Green Dune is a boost for the Edgemere community and the overall peninsula.

Santa Run Sparks a Holly, Jolly, Good Time By Pete Tyler

Twas the week before Christmas, and all near the Beach, the winds that were whipping, all warmth it did reach, All the Santas were stretching, near the new fallen snow, waiting to run, and the signal to go, Down the boardwalk they flew, that Rockaway bunch, Some for the thrill, some for the brunch, No matter their fitness, nor age, or their dream, All were our winners, this Rockaway team. On Saturday, December 16, a brave group of runners, defied the winter chill, the surly winds, and the Bah Humbugs of injuries past, to run the Rockaway Santa Suit 5k Run and Pub Crawl. This annual cold weather exercise filled with holiday cheer, has become a fixture in the local

racing scene. A 5K race, approximately 3.1 miles, is on average, ran in 16 minutes to less than an hour for those just starting to get interested in running. As a 5K it’s perfect for kids, adults, first timers, avid runners, and Santa fans far and wide. This annual tradition has been making spirits bright since it started in 1999, according to race coordinator, John Edwards. Participants met at Community House to receive their Santa Suits that are provided with the $40 entry fee. Proceeds went to the Curley family, who is dealing with the tragic aftermath of an apartment fire on December 3, so all participants were running for not only good fun, but a good cause. Inside, the feeling was warm, and had the subdued excitement of Christmas Eve. Folks of all ages were changing into their Santa suits, over their highend running gear, that some avid runners prefer. There were the cheerful voices of kids from four years old, excited to be around so many Santas, to the Graybeards, working on making their run time better than the last 5k. Kids like the Corvi sisters, Jeanne Marie, Sadie, Anna, and Cassie, giggling, then shy, were excited for a run on the boardwalk despite being too young to wear the suit. Once everyone got their suit and last minute instructions, participants headed out to the starting point on Beach 102nd Street.

The blistering winds coming off the ocean, combined with the previous night’s snow on the ground, gave everyone a jolt that no coffee could match. Other than that, the runners couldn’t ask for a more beautiful day to race. Matthew Marten, who was old enough to wear the Santa suit for the first time, has been running the 5K since he was small. Jamie Schneider, with an ankle encased in an orthopedic boot and driven around in a wheelchair by her friends, kept that “never give up” attitude along the course. When Paul O’Neill (not the NY Yankee) was asked why he runs, he said, “In December, when it gets cold, I get bored. So this is a fun way to get out, enjoy the holidays, and maybe lose a few pounds. Plus there’s a Pub Crawl.” The starting horn blew and a sea of Santas went on their merry way uptown toward Beach 126th Street, where everyone turned around and

headed back to the finish line at Beach 102nd Street. After the run, participants warmed up with some libations at Community House and other local pubs. According to Edwards, the hardest part of putting this race on year after year, is the season itself, but the rewards are great. “Dealing with Rockaway weather in December makes it a tough call. It's a healthy, fun thing to do. The suit makes it,” Edwards said. The suit makes it, indeed. Next year, when the memories of Thanksgiving past, and Netflix binging ghosts are a screaming, remember, there’s a Rockaway Santa Run waiting to make the Nice list, raising funds for a good cause and sparking smiles all around, and maybe that is the best Christmas gift of all. DOE Announces Two Rockaway Schools Slated to be Shutdown By Kami-Leigh Agard

This past Monday, December 18, just a week before Christmas, parents of students at two schools in Rockaway received a surprising announcement. Out of the 12 Queens schools in the NYC Department of Education’s (DOE) Renewal School program, PS 42 R. Vernam in Arverne and MS 53 Brian Piccolo in Far Rockaway are slated for closure at the end of the school year. According to a lengthy report released by the DOE, “The proposals for closures will be posted next month in January, and will be voted on at the Panel for Educational Policy (PEP) meeting on February 28, 2018. The decision to close the Rockaway schools, two of the nine schools citywide slated for closure, was based on the schools’ test scores, enrollment, graduation rates, college readiness and more. Students at those sites will be ‘better served at the stronger school options available to them,’ the agency said. The Renewal Schools program created longer school days at some struggling institutions, while providing $150 million in resources to address crucial issues. Mayor de Blasio said at the start of the program in 2014, that those that did not show improvements would be closed. Some, including Public Advocate Letitia James, have been critical of the program, saying it has not accomplished its intended purpose. According to the DOE report, for the 2016-2017 school year, PS 42 had an enrollment of 719 students, of which students in grades three to five had a performance proficiency of 17 percent in English Language Arts (ELA), compared to the city-wide average of 40 percent; and a performance proficiency of 14 percent in math, compared to the citywide average of 42 percent. In grades six to eight, in ELA, students had a performance proficiency of 14 percent compared

to the citywide average of 41 percent; and a six percent performance proficiency in math, compared to the citywide average of 33 percent. For the same school year, MS 53 had an enrollment of 314 students, of which students in grades six to eight had a performance proficiency of 16 percent in ELA, compared to the citywide average of 41 percent; and a performance proficiency of four percent in math, compared to the citywide average of 33 percent. With these dismal scores, and the reality that Rockaway is already a desert for parents looking for alternative school options, what are they going to do? On Wednesday, December 20, Mary Barton, superintendent of District 27 in which both PS 42 and MS 53 fall under, released a report, stating that there will be two community meetings scheduled in January for parents and the community at large to attend. The first meeting will be held on January 10, 6:30 p.m. at PS 42, and the second on January 11, 6:30 p.m. at MS 53. However, Kevin Morgan, Parent Teacher Association (PTA) president at PS 42, is not waiting that long. He and other parent advocates have organized a free chartered bus trip to Albany, (provided by the Alliance for Quality Education), for concerned parents and community members to protest the school closures on January 9. This DOE announcement really blindsided us. I don’t understand how our school is being closed down when we were told we met the standards. school leadership. All we got is a new principal. Starting with a new school administration would be good, but shutting the school down and changing the name that it has held for decades is absolutely not acceptable, and we are going to fight it. My son is graduating from the eighth grade at PS 42 this year, and he is doing great. So that just shows, that it’s not just because I have a child attending the school, but that I am sincerely fighting for all the children who need to be here in their community for their education,� Morgan said. Community advocate, Jeffrey Williams-Maisonet, who attended PS 42 as a child, said, “With these closures, people need to be reactive to the DOE. I attended PS 42, and while I was there, the school went throughout three different principals. There was a lot of bullying, drugs and gang violence. At that age, kids like myself were peer-pressured to join gangs. That school has a dark history and some-

Government can provide the money and the infrastructure, but when are we going to come together? Also, there are a lot of educators residing in the community. Can

PBA Spreads Holiday Cheer in Far Rock Some elves in blue paid a visit to the Church of the Nazarene in Far Rockaway to spread some holiday cheer. Members of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association of the City of New York (PBA) continued a longtime tradition by delivering hundreds of toys to needy families on Saturday, December 16. Far Rockaway’s Church of the Nazarene was the police union’s first stop on their gift-giving list. The PBA selected Far Rocka-

way as one of their stops as the area still recovers from Hurricane Sandy. Dozens of families were able to fulfill their holiday needs with the generous toy donations from the PBA. They then headed to Brownsville Recreational Area for a ceremony and further toy distribution before wrapping up the day with a PBA-sponsored holiday party at Medgar Evers College for sheltered families from Crown Heights. “Delivering toys to needy families is just one thing

the PBA does to help,� PBA president Patrick J. Lynch said in a press release. “This union, which represents nearly 50,000 active and retired NYC police officers, supports organizations like the Police Athletic League, Community Mayor’s Association, the Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots campaign, the NY Press Club Foundation and others too numerous to mention. And the PBA’s presence is also felt, but not necessarily seen, through

its continual support for annual fundraising events like dinner dances and holiday functions particularly for the less fortunate through donations of toys, personal goods and meals at the holidays. Additionally, our members are active in their own home communities where they coach athletic teams for children, counsel youngsters, donate to worthy causes and contribute to community life in many other ways big and small.�

RT Salutes Animal Aficionado, Ruth Perez For Santa Paws Month By Kami-Leigh Agard

December is Santa Paws Month! Here’s the final installation of The Rockaway Times feature, in which we gave our readers the opportunity to nominate locals, who go above and beyond to rescue and/or find homes for lost/and or abandoned animals. This week’s nominee is Ruth Perez! For Rockaway Park resident, Jamie Tess Zimmer, her neighbor, Ruth Perez, lives up to the meaning of her name, Ruth, which in Hebrew means friend and vision of beauty. “Ruth has been my neighbor for five years, and every day I am still amazed by how much she extends herself to be a true friend, not just to humans, but especially animals. After Hurricane Sandy, Ruth stepped in and was a major help to me when she offered to pet sit my dog, Reece, while I was helping

my family uptown recuperate after the storm. And now years later, she still lovingly watches Reece, who knows her as “Mama Ruth.” All the animals in our building know “Mama Ruth.” She helps neighbors by watching their pets if they are going on holiday, running errands or have an emergency. For our pets, coming to Ruth’s home is a great treat because they get to frolic with the bevy of cats and dogs she lovingly adopted. They must sense the beauty and love radiating from Ruth, because sometimes they pout when it’s time to leave!” Upon ringing Perez’s door bell, you maybe flabbergasted by the cacophony of shrill barks and pitter patter of feet coming from inside, and the comical glares from her pintsized pets as if to say, “Who are you? Friend or foe?” Perez has four cats and three dogs, all of whom she

adopted. When asked why so many, Perez responded, “I love animals. When I think of homeless cats and dogs, my heart just breaks. Just like us humans, they need a home too. a little leery of all the people and animals around him. Perez explained, “Imagine being entrapped in a cage for years, and left in isolation? I brought Junior home because I believed he deserved to be in a loving environment. When he first arrived, his eyes were glassy and looked frightened, but now just a week later, I see him playing, wagging his tail, which shows that he is happy.” Perez’s bevy of animals also includes, Ice, a 10-year old Chihuahua, she adopted from Northshore Animal League in Port Washington, LI. Perez said the day she set out to Northshore, there was a blizzard and the roads were hazardous, but she still braved it all, and drove out to adopt a Yorkshire Terrier. When she arrived, she found out that the Yorkies were not there because of the blizzard. Though disappointed, she still walked around, and suddenly spotted this tiny, skinny Chihuahua surrounded by these huge, menacing dogs. She immediately fell in love and brought Ice home. Then there’s three-year-old Luna, a domestic shorthaired feral cat, who keeps to herself. Perez said that feral cats are not very sociable with humans as they are strays that have never been domesticated. However as the months have rolled by, Perez said that Luna is softening up, though she won’t let anyone touch her. Perez also adopted three Calico cats: five-month-old Nyla, one-year-old Leanna, two-year-old Khaleesi; and a seven-month-old Yorkshire Terrier, named Benjie. Does Perez plan to add more animals to her brood? She said, “Why not? My friends and family tell me that I have too many, but when I see an animal who needs a loving home, I want to help. A pet is going to love you conditionally, better than humans, and they teach us what love is really all about.”

Far Away Lessons Hit Home This column was started in New Zealand while on a vacation with my husband, Pat. It was the most amazing time of my life to visit a country so pure and beautiful with very little damage to its environment. Only four million people live in New Zealand and one million reside in the capital city, Auckland. I believe we saw more animals than humans. The most spectacular place on earth with a land untouched by humans. Everyone has a dog! WiFi is not always available, so we disconnected and found ourselves really connecting to one another and everyone else around us. It was so inspiring and cleansing to be free from the media, social network and phone calls. My biggest observation was the people here do not obsess

about their phones. In fact, you rarely ever see anyone on their phones. Even the young people are off their cellular devices and actually socially interacting with conversation. What a blessing to their society that they do not have a strong WiFi service. They are extremely social and totally engaged with their surroundings. The outdoors is their playground and they are very happy. We could learn a thing or two from the New Zealanders. Being behind the times is actually being ahead of the times. As I toured New Zealand, it brought back many memories of my mom and dad. My ancestors were speaking loudly and I was listening. My dad wanted to emigrate to Australia from Scotland, but my mom insisted on emigrating to the USA where her one and only sister had already moved. They decided to emigrate to New York

City to raise a family together and, boy, did we have a great childhood with seven siblings and six cousins spending every holiday together along with summer vacations on the Jersey Shore. I thought to myself what a different life we would have lived if we settled in Australia. For one thing, we would have been so far away from all my aunts, uncles and cousins. Our relationships would have been very different. Family is everything in my life. They will do anything for you at any time of the day or night. We had great times and suffered losses of children and spouses. I love my family dearly and the community that I live in as well. I take nothing for granted. Blessed and thankful for this journey. Traveling so far away made me appreciate my friendships and relationships in this life. It also made me think about what really matters in life.

During this holiday season, the presence of one another is so much more important than the presents we receive. I want for nothing and strive to live fully each day. In our house this year, we are not buying any electronics. In fact, we are trying to really teach our young adults about the value of spending quality time with one another. Henry David Thoreau wrote, “I went to the woods because I wished to live fully in the moment and not when I came to die to wish that I lived.” We have one beautiful life with many twists and turns. Maybe we can make a conscious effort to put down our cell phones and computers. Spend time with the ones you love and live your life fully. Say yes more than no. Be well, be happy, be healthy, be grateful. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We are overflowing with abundance.

Hernias ate, out. The hernia can be detected by the presence of a bulge in the groin. By placing a hand over the area and asking the patient to cough, which increases intra-abdominal pressure, a bulge can be felt. The bulge should be soft and should be able to be pushed in. If the bulge is hard and cannot be pushed back in, the hernia may be incarcerated, which is a surgical emergency. If a loop of bowel is stuck inside an incarcerated hernia, it may lose its blood supply and die, which can cause peritonitis. Once a hernia is detected, it should be repaired. As a rule, small hernias can be easily repaired, whereas large hernias

Inguinal hernias, which occur in the groin area, are much more common in men than women, although they can occur in women. The reason for this is that men have an opening in both sides of the lower abdomen, or groin area, through which the spermatic cords pass on their way to the testicles. The spermatic cord contains a vein, artery, vas deferens (this carries sperm from the testicle), and the ilioinguinal nerve. Obviously, women do not have this opening in the abdominal wall. The contents of the abdomen, which are under pressure, can cause this opening to tear, thereby allowing the inner abdominal wall to bulge, or herni-

may be technically difficult to repair, and the repair is more likely to fail. Most small hernias will become large ones over time if they are not repaired. The repair may be performed as an open procedure or done with a laparoscope. In either case, the surgeon usually covers the opening in the abdominal wall with a prosthetic mesh, commonly made of nylon. The mesh is inserted and secured to the muscles of the abdominal wall. Using mesh will usually make the hernia repair less likely to fail. In general, laparoscopic surgeries heal faster than open surgeries with less post-operative pain and bruising. Whether the repair is done open or laparoscopically, pain at the surgical site is common and often lasts a few days to a week. Bruising, medically known as ecchymosis, is also common and may be extensive in some cases, particularly if the repair was an open one. Bruising and swelling of the penis and scrotum can occur, and while its appearance can be alarming, it is usually not dangerous, however the surgeon should be informed.

Page 29 Post-operative recovery is normally fast, especially for repairs of small hernias. Patients are often encouraged to walk every day, but strenuous activity like running and lifting anything more than five to 10 pounds (for example nothing heavier than a gallon of milk) is not permitted until the patient has a follow-up visit with the surgeon, usually about one to two weeks after the procedure. Constipation and straining during bowel movements put pressure on the repair and should be avoided. Often a stool softener is prescribed. Lastly, if the patient has a fever, shaking chills, worsening pain, inability to eat without feeling nauseous, or redness or pus draining from the wound, the surgeon or primary care doctor should be immediately contacted as the wound may be infected, which will often lead to the need for hospitalization. Better Than 5 Golden Rings Since early summer, many local civic leaders have been hammering away at the City with concerns that our Rockaway beaches are once again eroding at an alarming rate. Thankfully, NYC Parks and the City heard us, and ordered a 90-day study (yes another study) of the erosion of our beaches. Sadly, the study revealed what we all know, our beaches are eroding! The biggest problem is NO ACTION! This means we are at the mercy of the Army Corps of Engineers' planned timeline for our beach reconstruction, which

is currently scheduled to begin on our beaches around 2020-2021. So where do we stand? The good news is the Mayor will meet with the Army Corps’ Commanding General and Chief of Engineers, Lieutenant General Todd T. Semonite and request that the scheduled construction on our beaches start in 2018 instead of 2020-21. Normally after hearing such bad news as "No Action needed," we would organize a protest or rally at City Hall. Since it's probably best to wait and see what the Mayor can deliv-

TWO CHARGED WITH MURDER OF FAR ROCK RAPPER “CHINX” After more than two years of tireless investigation, two Long Island men have been charged by Queens prosecutors with five criminal counts for their alleged drive-by slaying of Far Rockaway rapper, Chinx. According to the Daily News, Lionel Pickens, 31, known by his stage name “Chinx,” grew up in the Edgemere Houses and later in Redfern. He was on the verge of blowing it up big in the hip world, but his life was tragically cut short on May 17, 2015 when he was shot and killed, while sitting in his car with his friend, Antar Alziadi, 27 in Briarwood, Queens. Alziadi was injured, but survived. District Attorney Richard A. Brown identified the defendants as Jamar Hill, 26, of Valley Stream, and Quincy Homere, 32, of Baldwin. They are presently awaiting arraignment before Queens Supreme Court Justice Kenneth J. Holder on a five-count indictment charg-

ing them with one count each of second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Brown said that according to the charges, in the early morning hours of May 17, 2015, Hill and Homere followed Chinx from a nightclub performance in Brooklyn into Queens before firing a weapon at his Porsche in the vicinity of Main Street and Queens Boulevard. Both Chinx and his passenger, Alziadi, were struck multiple times. The two men were transported to a local Queens hospital, where Chinx was pronounced dead and Alziadi was treated for his injuries. If convicted, both defendants each face up to 25 years to life in prison. Chinx, was working on his debut album, "Welcome to JFK," when he died. The album was released in August 2015.

St. John’s Celebrates Hanukkah with Menorah Lighting Ceremony

St. John’s Episcopal Hospital kicked off their Hanukkah celebrations this past Thursday, December 14 with a menorah lighting ceremony. Staff members, as well as members of the community were invited to attend and participate. For each day of Hanukkah, the hospital continued to host a small menorah lighting ceremony. Special guests were chosen each day to light the menorah. At the opening event, Rabbi Avraham Klein and students from a local Hebrew

academy lit the menorah alongside members of the St. John’s Episcopal Hospital Pastoral Care Department, including Chaplain Rabbi Leslie Schotz, Chaplain Rabbi Imanuel Davydov, and Dr. Nancy Schaffer. Kosher donuts were also given as treats to the students. “Hanukkah is the perfect time of year to remember the importance of family, friends, and community,” said St. John’s CEO Gerard Walsh. “We are excited to celebrate with our friends in the Rockaways.”

Its odd to be writing about air conditioning units a few days shy of Christmas. It seems clear to me that nobody had heard of ductless air conditioning units until after Superstorm Sandy. Since then, they have been put in almost 50 percent of the homes that I go into. Whether it was to replace their existing heating system entirely or just to provide an easy way to provide central air conditioning, this type of technology has provided solutions for many different cases. Like a lot of new technology, they have their benefits and disadvantages. Let me be very clear about this next point. I love the ductless air conditioning. My

dream has always been to have central air in my house. I used to think that only very wealthy people could afford to have air conditioning that was silent and cooled evenly throughout the whole house. When I was growing up, my parents looked into installing traditional central air conditioning in their 1920’s house, but the job was going to be too problematic for such an old house. They decided against it, and at the time that was the only option. Now, you can install one of these units, practically yourself and for a fraction of the price. Every room can be controlled separately or you can group the units for multiple rooms. The maintenance for these units is relatively simple, but like so many

Page 35 important enough to share with all of you. The little black dots that I observed were in fact a type of mold that actually can grow on the unit's evaporator lines. Mold is mold and there is never any justification for finding some in your home. When that unit comes on, it will cause the mold, spores to become airborne and that is the worst way to spread mold. The fix is to clean the unit on the inside or better yet, have a professional company do it properly. I can’t stress this enough. Mold is a serious health issue and can do damage to an individual for years on end. Professionals have special chemicals that they know are safe to use and will not damage the unit. Most of the units that everyone has are under five years old and as the years go by, more of these cases will pop-up. Do yourself a favor and look now before it’s too late. I climbed up and opened the cover. I removed the filter without any tools. The homeowner cleaned the filter and I replaced it in the proper location. Five minutes, very easy. Upon reinstalling the filter, I noticed little black spots on the inside of the unit. I went home that night and did some research. when you say one thing and mean your mother.” One of the great things about growing up in the 1950s was that we lived in a small apartment over in Woodside, Queens. Each December, a real Christmas tree was set up and decorated in our small living room, and every Christmas morning there were gifts under the tree from Santa. We didn’t have a fireplace, so the question naturally arose as to how Santa got in the apartment each year. Mom deftly fielded the question by responding, “Jesus, are you really that daft? If he can get down a chimney, how hard do you think it is for him to come through a window or a door?” Made perfect sense to me at the time. Many decades later, I was asked to "stand in" for Santa Claus by Eileen O'Hare and pay a visit to the school children of Broad Channel at P.S. 47 down on Power Road. When I asked one young boy sitting on my lap if he had been good during the year, his eyes flew wide open and, after quickly glancing around the room, he looked down at the floor and nervously asked in a low voice, "Why, did my parents say something to you?" I responded by laughing long and hard, and assured the lad that he had no reason to worry because he was on my good list. What bothers me about Christmas shaming is the sheer illogic of it. All mentions of one observance are eliminated, while others are cele-

brated, in the name of political correctness. It is not uncommon to receive newsletters from our children's schools, our politicians and others announcing winter solstice celebrations and concerts, while simultaneously wishing everyone a Blessed Eid... Happy Hanukkah... Happy Kwaanza and a Happy Diwali. It is simply hypocritical, unfair and just plain wrong. In closing, may I say that Christmas, Santa Claus, and yes, Rudolph too, are truly the "final frontier" of childhood innocence and, as adults who all benefited from their magic as children, we should all strive to keep that magic alive during every Christmas season. If we can help make a child smile, help them forget the real world for even just a little while – then as far as I am concerned, that's the real magic of Christmas. So this year, let's quit with all the "Happy Holidays" baloney and put a stop to "Season's Greetings" silliness. Life is far too short for meaningless platitudes. Christmas is a magical and hopeful time of year for many, many people, and it doesn't deserve to be watered down for any reason, political correctness least of all. I will now return to binge watching "Countdown to Christmas" on the Hallmark Channel as I extend my sincere wishes to each and every one of you for a very Merry Christmas! BY GIOVANNA DIEHL MILISIC My Mammy has a mask. She’s been wearing it every day, lately. A poker face that deceives everyone, but me. A Cheshire cat smile is what we see, but a little cloud is forming over her heart. My Mammy is a caregiver; she nurtures all her friends and family. When her friends and family hurt, she hurts too. And, when they are happy, she is ecstatic. But, she has one friend fighting for her life — a battle with her own body. Her friend has cancer. And, although you might be thinking, oh, that friend must be so upset — NO, NO, NO, my Mammy is the one who is devastated. Each year, I watch Christmas shoppers force themselves into stores, fire-enginefast. I’m not going to be one of those shoppers, this year. I don't want to give my Mammy jewelry or clothing or other typical gifts. She deserves more. I want to give her the hope and the care she gives others. I don't want my Mammy to have to wear a poker face. I want her to actually be happy this year for Christmas. I am going to hug her, like she hugs other people. I am going to love her, like she loves others. I will be her superhero bursting through the little clouds that created a shadow over her heart. Kennedy's funeral and it told the story of a man who had dug the President's grave. As a writer, my grandfather was the bridge between pen and paper, and the magic of words. As a hero, he fought a thirty-year war with diabetes. But eventually diabetes planned a sneak attack and the war ended at a great cost. He never made it out alive. I was devastated, and my insides were crying. My dream is to see this magical man who always mumbled to me, "What's up champ?" one more time. So, could you, Magic of the holidays, bring him back one more time? Tell Santa, that's all I would like for Christmas this year! With Hanukkah coming up, I will wish for the sunshine on my cloudy day to come back. They say every accomplishment starts with the decision to try. head feels like it will explode packed with the millions of memories I have of Maggie. One snowy winter day I played in my backyard with Maggie. She pranced across our white carpet-covered backyard like a joyful reindeer. I ran over to her and gave her a big cuddle. There were many days like this, but the day she left me was like my life was over. I stormed out the front door like a lightning bolt and sat on my front porch. I buried my face into my arms as far as I could. Tears rolled down my face so fast that I felt like my tears were a summer storm. But I whispered to myself, “She’s in a better place now”. I practice singing harder than Britney Spears, but it doesn't pay off. When I sing, my voice is, to say the least, not comparable to the voice of a lark, or anything in the bird family. When I play the piano and sing along, my family claps for me, but I know it's just because of the piano. I feel as sad as a widow. I go to my room and constantly practice, but nothing comes of my hard work. I know that there is a rainy cloud above my head. I want to let out the spark in me and prove to myself that I'm a great singer. So, I won't wish for a toy for Hanukkah; I'll wish for a greater gift — the perseverance to keep practicing, until finally, I perfect the art of singing. BY MEGYN HARTMAN The sun would not shine. and whispered, “I’m going to miss you Nana. Remember the time that we surprised you with a picnic. We had cupcakes, donuts and we laughed every second. That time felt like I had won the lottery with you by my side. What about the time we were celebrating your birthday and you were blowing out the candles. You puffed out your chest like the big bad wolf and you blew as hard as you could. Then you realized that they were candles that kept coming back. We laughed so hard we started to cry. Little did we know our tears of happiness would turn to tears of sadness. Santa, this year for Christmas I don’t want a doll or clothes. I just want my Nana back. Even the thought of you bringing her back makes me happy. I’ll never give up on hope. Miracles happen everyday. BY GERARD GUGLIELMO It was a dark day. Raindrops hit the church windows so loud it sounded like someone was breaking in. Tears ran down faces like the Mississippi river. My grandpa was a great man. He never stopped until he was satisfied with his work. He cooked so well that he could serve his meatballs to anyone and they would say it was the best they’d ever eaten. But now, Grandpa was gone. Pew! Pew! Ding! That was the sound of him trying to win a game at an amusement park. “Grandpa you’ve got this!” I yelled. Buzzers went off his chair louder than someone screaming. The sound took control of my face and it broke down into a smile. He carried the stuffed animal over his head like a trophy, and placed it into my hands. This year, as I set up my Christmas tree with my family, I already knew what I wanted for Christmas. The only thing I want for Christmas this year is to spend one more day eating grandpa's delicious Italian food while playing a card game.

Laundromat Fire Leaves Families Displaced On the morning of Sunday, December 17, a fire broke out from the Rinse Cycle Laundromat in Rockaway Beach. The fire left the business disrupted and families displaced for the holiday season. On Sunday morning, firefighters responded to a blaze at the Rinse Cycle Laundromat, located at 98-16 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. The Rockaway Times reached out

to the FDNY for details, but they did not respond by press time. However, neighbors and tenants provided some information. A tenant in one of the apartments above the laundromat claims the fire started in the ventilation system of the laundromat. No one was hurt, but smoke and damage that occurred while the FDNY attempted to control the blaze, have left families displaced.

Firefighters had to knock down holes in the walls and ceilings of the apartment building above to access the vent, so two families that lived above the laundromat and two families in the building next door have been temporarily displaced from their apartments for a few months, a neighbor said. As for the laundromat, it remains open to an extent, but not fully functional. Rinse Cy-

cle is open for drop off and pick-up, as the owner owns another location where he can bring laundry.

World Champions Karate Center Tournament a Success Sunday, December 17, made for a wonderful experience for the karate-ka participating in the World Champions Karate Winter tournament. This annual event is the culmination of the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union), program for 2017. The athletes enjoyed themselves in friendly competition at the Dojo. Their camaraderie was evident from the cheering and applause by fellow students and parents in attendance. The students competed in Kata (forms) and Kumite (sparring). The Tournament rules are the same ones used at the National AAU Tournament. All Kumite matches start with a bow and end with a handshake. Each competitor congratulated the other on a hard-fought match.

The Kata matches ranged from five-year-old yellow belts, through 12-year-old green, purple and black belts executing their particular Shotokan (Japanese) Kata. Their practice and commitment were evident as the Kata were performed with focus and power from the yellow through black belts. This tournament was also a precursor to the larger AAU Tournament to be held at Aviator Gym in 2018.
