Reflections: Scenes from Jamaica Bay Rockaway is surrounded by thousands of acres of parkland, hosting diverse wildlife, important cultural sites, and picturesque natural areas including Jamaica Bay, an urban tidal estuary. As a public-private par tnership, the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy supports 10,000 acres of this parkland and hosts programming and stewardship events in parks throughout the year, including co-hosting the bi-annual Rockaway! Free Arts Festival. To highlight Jamaica Bay and Rockaway parks and raise awareness about these spaces, the Conservancy is launching a new revolving art installation, Reflections. Reflections, viewable safely at the Conservancy’s storefront window, will host works by local artists throughout

the year, reflecting on the natural beauty and cultural importance of our parks. To kick-off the installation, Don Riepe, Jamaica Bay Guardian and Director of the Northeast Chapter of the American Littoral Society, presents Scenes from Jamaica Bay highlighting wildlife and unique ecology found in this urban tidal estuary. Thirteen original photographs present an important look at wildlife and natural areas found in Jamaica Bay and Rockaway, including osprey, snowy owl, skimmers, painted turtles, humpback whale and more. Retired from the National Park Service in 2003, Mr. Riepe worked as a naturalist ranger and manager of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and serves on the advisory board of

NYC Audubon and is co-chair of the Jamaica Bay Task Force. Mr. Riepe has written many articles on natural history subjects and his photographs have been published in journals including Scientific American, National Wildlife, Audubon, Defenders, Continued on page 4

Underwater Naturalist, Parade, and The New York Times. “In my many years exploring Jamaica Bay, I can always find something new to celebrate. Our parks are diverse and unique to New York City. In this urban environment, I’m pleased to offer photographs of wildlife and natural areas found throughout the Bay,” Riepe said. “We are thrilled to host original photographs by Don Riepe as part of our inaugural installation of Reflections,” Alex Zablocki, Executive Director, Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy said. “I hope many will come by our new office and see the pieces in person and reflect on the blessings our parkland offers us in Rockaway and Jamaica Bay.” An avid birder, Don also has a keen interest in Lepidoptera or butterflies and moths. “Perhaps one of my favorite pieces as part of this installation is a bumblebee on swamp milkweed. Far Rock Greek Council Brings Tides of Joy to Community CT3Designs, the Far Rock Greek Council and Evntz On The Rock brought “Tides of Joy” to Far Rockaway last weekend with their toy drive/ pop-up shop. On Saturday, December 19, the community was invited to the Evntz On the Rock’s space on Central Ave for some Christmas cheer. The event, made possible by the members of the Far Rock Greek Council and donations from the community, was a huge

success. The day included photos with Santa Claus, toy and PPE giveaways such as sewn masks, face shield and hand sanitizer donated by PPE4All, and vendors, including youth, who showed off their brands and entrepreneurial spirit. Some of the vendors included MiracleWithLove Food & Catering, AmiaCollection, RichKidBrand , NatalieSweetTreats, Lee’s Ice Creamery, FruitsOfMyLabor, ShineWithRizz,

HandSaniSlimer, SkylarGBoutique, PrettyLilDreamz, SoapsByJujube and Leiah’s Lemonade. The organizers were able to collect more than 250 toys that will be donated. “The event was definitely needed for the youth in our community, especially for those who are affected tremendously by the pandemic,” Curtis Turney-Rentas, founder of the Far Rock Greek Council said. “With

the success of the event, every youth at the event was able to receive one toy of their liking, while the rest of the toys will be distributed to kids at a family shelter in the Rockaway community on Christmas Day. We just couldn’t cancel this, so we pivoted the structure and made it possible because we all know our community needs this more than ever before.” Photos by Raul Cepin.

Merry Christmas! ***** Covid numbers going up on the Peninsula. Robby Schwach of Councilman Ulrich’s office sends out weekly reports and this week is worth noting. Since Thanksgiving, there have been 937 new cases in Rockaway including 243 in 11694 (Rockaway Park/Belle Harbor/Neponsit) alone, and 152 in Breezy Point. Far Rockaway has 374 new cases since Thanksgiving but with a much bigger population than 11694 or 11697. ***** The good news is parts of Rockaway are some of the first in line for the vaccine rollout in NYC. On Tuesday, Mayor de Blasio announced the 27 zip codes "hardest hit by the coronavirus" that will receive the vaccine when the gener-

al public is next up. Three of those are Rockaway zip codes including 11691, 11693 and 11694. How these neighborhoods were determined is not clear. ***** According to Move.org, New York had the #9 highest amount of people moving into the state. But wait, New York also had the #2 most amount of residents moving out of state. There are a lot of snowbirds in Rockaway who move only temporarily. Overall, Rockaway is a place that people are definitely moving to. ***** There’s the annual Rockaway Times Photo Contest and there’s our Local Color feature in the paper each week so you can tell we’re into photos (and so are a lot of you!). That’s why we’re so happy to be on the verge of reaching 10,000 followers on Instagram. If you’re not following already, find us @RockawayTimes! Thank you! ***** If you’re reading this on Christmas eve, there’s still

The Rockaway Times

time to get gift cards at local businesses. Rockaway Hoops, the terrific show hosted by Charlie Marquadt and Ryan Woerner, have teamed with a few places (Kennedy’s, Callies, Bungalow, Harbor Light and Jamesons) to promote gift cards. If you mention “Rockaway Hoops” when picking up the gift card, you’ll get a free drink to go. ***** Rick Horan says it’s time to get the hottest ticket in town while sharing some love this Holiday season. Instead of the usual bottle of wine, consider giving a Graybeard's 50-50 PotA-Gold ticket to that special someone. Last year's winning ticket was worth over $50,000! The Graybeards, a 501(c)3 notfor-profit, was formed in 2001 after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the crash of AA 587. The mission was simple, help local people in need. Please consider purchasing one or more tickets as it’s The Graybeards’ largest fundraising event of the year. The drawing will be held live, online, in lieu of the

annual dinner dance. Tickets are $100. They make great stocking stuffers! Contact Rick by cell, 917-345-3700 or email, Rick@horan.me. Knowing Rick, he’ll probably sell fractional tickets so if you don’t have $100 but still want to get in, ask Rick! ***** Closings have commenced on the new 116 condos on Beach 116th Street and people have started moving in! There will be new life on that end of the block and the whole area will flourish. Best wishes to the new owners! ***** Our hearts go out to the Mullen family this week. Cristin Mullen, just 35, died last week. An active runner, she had been battling epilepsy and succumbed to cardiac arrest. The Santa Shuffle was dedicated to her this year and the family plans to hold a memorial service next July. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Cristin to Autism Speaks, 1060 State Road, Princeton, NJ 08540.

Covid-19 Tracker 12/14-12/21 As parts of Rockaway have seen increases in Covid-19 cases, it’s important to keep track of how the neighborhood is doing with coronavirus. Robby Schwach of Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office has been hard at work, tracking down the details for each Rockaway zip code. We are sharing this info each week. Schwach wanted to stress that numbers are up significantly on the peninsula. Since Thanksgiving, there are 937 new cases in Rockaway including 243 in 11694 (Rockaway Park/Belle Harbor/ Neponsit), and 152 in Breezy Point (which has 1/5 the population of 11694). Far Rockaway has 374 new cases since Thanksgiving with a population roughly three times that of 11694. The latest info represents changes between 12/14/202012/21/2020. In 11691, positive cases increased by 172 from 3,542 to 3,714. There have been no new

There were no new deaths in this period and the total remains at 89. In 11697, cases rose by 23, from 258 to 303. There were no new deaths in this period and the total is at six. Page 12 NEWS AWAY POINT

Did you catch the “Christmas Star?” Monday, December 21 marked the winter solstice and some related Monday’s astronomical phenomenon to the Star of Bethlehem but it wasn’t a star you saw. It was the conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter. The two planets were so close that they appeared to be one big bright star with the naked eye. That’s if you saw it. The “star,” which

rose about an hour after sunset, was difficult to see at first due to cloud coverage, but the clouds eventually cleared enough to get a good luck. Lucky for us, a local high school teacher, Larry, was on the boardwalk with a telescope, where you could see such details as the rings of Saturn and Jupiter’s moons. The last time this conjunction happened was July 16, 1623 and the last time it was

truly visible to most of the 15, 2080, but it could be anothworld was March 5, 1226. The er 400 years before it’s visible next time a comparable con- again. junction will occur is March Photo by Katie McFadden.

Santa Sleighs Santa sleighed through Rockaway and spread Christmas cheer throughout on Saturday, December 19. The 8th Annual Santa Sleigh Run was a big hit. Christmas music blasted throughout Far Rockaway as the Santa sleigh made its way through town, giving kids a heads up that he would soon arrive. It was all part of MakeMyMotherProud’s annual Santa Sleigh Run. This event is usually organized by founder Lakia Echols, but as she’s deployed in Kuwait, Antoneke Weatherspoon, and a great group of volunteers held down the fort and made sure the kids of Rockaway got to see this tradition continue. The Santa Sleigh Run was also made possible by Influence Active Wear, Lady Hawks, Dred Surfer Grill, Images by Salome, the NYPD 101st Precinct, Rock Safe Streets and donations made by the community. With this, Santa and his elves were able to give toys and goodies to every child who came out to

the sleigh as it made stops at Redfern Cornerstone, Beach 26th, Beach 41st, Ocean Bay Cornerstone, Beach 71st, the Hammel Houses and Beach 116th Street. The NYPD’s 101st Precinct led the way to make sure the sleigh could arrive at each stop on time. For more info about MakeMyMotherProud, make sure to follow them on Facebook. Santas Sleigh the Shuffle

Story and Photos By Katie McFadden

It wasn’t the eggnog that made you do a double take at the sea of Santas running down Shore Front last weekend. It was Rockapulco Run’s Annual Santa Shuffle 5K! On Saturday, December 19,

after organizer John Edwards shouted “go” and started the clock, the Santas took off with merry and bright faces as they raced down Shore Front Parkway for the 3.1mile trek. This year’s run was dedicated to local resident Cristin Mullen, who died unexpectedly at age 35 on Thursday, December 17. Mullen was an avid runner who participated in several Rockapulco Run events in the past, including the Santa Shuffle. Plans shifted for the event but the Santas were ready for anything. Originally planned for Rogers, the headquarters for suit and number pick-up on the road on Beach 108th was switched to The Rocka- Street rather than the usual way Hotel and the race began boardwalk, as it had not been cleared of snow from Wednesday’s storm. While the race usually draws hundreds, coronavirus kept it smaller with about 60 suited and masked-up Santas this year. Participants could walk or run but the two first runners were given a special prize pack. However, everyone, no matter what place they came in, was given cookies to bring home at the end of their trek. For more info on Rockapulco Run events, head to Rockapulcorun.com.

Stage Is Set For RTC’s Encore By Dan Guarino

The sounds of applause may have drifted away with the coming of COVID as the Rockaway Theatre Company (RTC) closed its last show early this year. But the start of renovation work and a continuing roster of online performances, classes, workshops and more, shows that even now, the RTC is keeping the show going on and rehearsing for its come back. Back in March, with season-premiering Jesus Christ Superstar just a week away from opening night, the RTC announced that for the safety of its audience and actors, they were postponing their 2020 season. As the spreading pandemic tightened its grip, however, they knew they would be in for a long intermission. Seeing the lack of activity in and around the theater building led some to wonder when, how and if the RTC would be back. But the group wasn’t waiting idly for the next show’s curtain to rise. “We realized the theater would be closed indefinitely and figured we might as well do extensive (inside) work while the building is not being used,” noted Susan Jasper. Jasper, current board member and one of RTC’s original founders 23 years ago, was happy to announce that final approvals from the National Park Service for the work were signed just last week. The Rockaway Theatre Company, along with several other non-profit community organizations, is situated at Fort Tilden, a former military base and current part of NPS’ Gateway National Recreation Area. Part of their agreement with NPS gives RTC responsibility for maintaining their Post Theatre building, which has been their home for almost their entire existence. John Gilleece, also a founder, board member and RTC’s long-time artistic director, told The Rockaway Times they’re looking to start work as soon as possible.

“We’re doing lighting and insulation. We’re replacing all the ceiling panels in the house (the audience area) with much better ones. Above that, we’re laying insulation, some 90 feet by 30 feet, to keep the cool air down inside in summer and the warm air in winter. The plan also calls for replacing house lights with LEDs, which burn cooler, are more energy saving and provide more light, “so people can, especially on the sides, actually read their programs.” Additionally, “We hope to repair and repaint all the inside walls,” Gilleece said. Gilleece notes that they have come a long way since taking over the army base’s former movie theatre. For instance, “the stage was two feet deep. Now it’s 16 feet by 32 feet wide,” Gilleece said. “Bathrooms! We struggled to put bathrooms inside in the beginning. Our bathrooms used to be a pair of porta-potties, outside and across the road.” More than that, over the years they cleared out and expanded their dressing room with the help of the Graybeards, replaced two roofs, built out their box office and concession area, installed moving stage lights, curtains and tracks to move scenery panels in and out, and upgraded their sound system to include wireless body microphones. They also put in heating and air conditioning to stretch their season from February through December. “Before Hurricane Sandy we replaced all the seats in the audience. After the hurricane, we had to do it all over again. We had to rip out the stage and dressing room for mold, deal with that and then rebuild to NPS standards,” Gilleece said. “When we started, we had no curtain, no lights, no audience yet, but we grew!” That growth continues online. Susan Jasper explained, “By the fall (we were) really missing our public as much as all they indicated they were miss-

A Special Night at The Little North Pole By Katie McFadden

The Little North Pole never stops, and on Monday, December 21, there was a very special visit. Joe Mure invited the St. Camillus Special Olympic athletes for their very own drive-by visit with Santa Claus, who had toys aplenty to share for a bright end to a difficult year. Every Monday night, the St. Camillus Special Olympic athletes get together to share some laughs, play some games and have some fun in the gym. Since March, that has looked a little different as program director Joe Featherston and coaches/ volunteers including Patrick Trainor, Theresa Trainor and Kerry Hynes have brought the fun to Zoom to continue that connection that the athletes look forward to every week. Although a different approach, Featherson says the Zoom meets have had some advantages. “Ray, Theresa and I ask them some questions and the positive is that they have changed from some being very quiet and reluctant to talk and now they’re outgoing and telling stories of their families, their weekends and showing off their artwork and drawings and paintings and what they’ve eaten for dinner or cooked,” Feath-

erston said. “They’ve really beHowever, there are also come more talkative and have downsides. “Obviously the come out of their shell, which is drawback is that we’ve been a tremendous positive.” meeting for, I think 26 years every Monday night at St. Camillus, and many of them have been with us for over 20 years so it’s been a tremendous part of their life that has been disrupted. This is their social group and they look forward to Monday nights being with their friends, doing their recreation and athletic activities and laughing and that they’re missing,” Featherston said. This has also been difficult for those who run the program. “They’re part of your family and not being able to hug them and play with them, you really miss it. It’s hard,” Featherston added. This year was made even harder as they lost one of their own. In September, Richie Connor, a longtime special athlete died unexpectedly. However, there are lessons to learn from the athletes, as they have a knack for seeing the best in everything. “When we asked them last week, what

would you like for Christmas, instead of wanting material things, they wanted peace in the world and for Covid to end so they can get back to their friends in St. Camillus,” Featherston said. On Monday, although set up a bit differently this year, they had a little bit of normalcy with their annual visit to the Little North Pole. Faces lit up with smiles as the special athletes got to drive or stop by the home to meet Santa and receive a gift. “We have our own special night every year. We talk about it for weeks to get them pumped up and after Joe puts on the big affair, to put another event on for our special Olympic athletes and for Santa to come up again, means a tremendous amount to them,” Featherston said. But it’s all worth it. “It’s our favorite night of the year,” Joe Mure’s fiancé, Jodi Tucci said. Even while getting a special night for themselves, the athletes are always thinking of others. “The St. Camillus Special Olympic athletes are so loving and giving and they know what life is really all about. Life is about friendships and family. It’s not worrying about the little stuff, not worrying about the little things, it’s about sharing companionship with other people,” Featherston said. That was exemplified throughout the night as when one athlete, Denise Kiernan, was asked about the toy she received, she happily replied, “I’m going to give it to my niece for Christmas. She’s seven!” Photos by Katie McFadden, Ray Otton and John Sluyk.

ROCKIN and STOCKIN By JP Stathis

To go along with the “rhythm” of 2020, I am embarking on a new endeavor, writing an oped about financial tips and music. I figured that 2020 has taken us all out of our comfort zones, so why not try something new, writing! Maybe if we all try something different, it will help us learn how to exist in this alternate reality. I’ve never considered myself to be a writer as I’ve always been a numbers guy, so please bear with me. Once I decided I wanted to write an article, next came the daunting task of deciding what to write about, preferably something where I can share an opinion and provide some insight to help others. So, I finally decided that Finance and Music would be a good starting point as I know them both very well. I have been working in the same five-block radius in midtown Manhattan since I

graduated from the University of Scranton in 2000. I was a Business Management major but I ended up doing a presentation with Charlie Heeran about the stock markets and I was intrigued. Right after we graduated, Charlie even helped me get a job interview which ended up becoming the first firm I worked at. Fast forward 20 years and I am now virtually managing multiple teams in various locations. It’s been a Long Strange Trip and, like the markets, there have been ups and downs but I’ve kept on truckin’. On the music front, I come from a family who listens to music daily. I can remember as a kid hearing “God Only Knows” being played on a record player at my grandfather Dr. John’s house on 121st and at the time I thought Carl Wilson was saying “John Only Knows.” My old man always had the Beach Boys, Beatles, CSNY, Joe Cocker and Van Morrison playing

on his stereo throughout the house. My mother prefers the lighter side of music, like Carly Simon and Linda Ronstadt, and we heard our fair share of them as well. As I got older, I used to love to control the juke box at whatever watering hole I was frequenting. I was often called upon by an owner/bartender to play music if there was nothing on and I don’t think I’ve ever declined. When I started bartending, I would play as many songs as I could at the start of my shifts and hope for the best the rest of the night. I still get pumped when a good song comes on, and I also cringe when I hear bad songs too (aka anything by Coldplay). I’ve always considered myself to have an ear for music and I like more bands than I can name. Music is like your tastebuds, it’s constantly evolving and so is the audience. Since I met my wife Courtney, I have really grown to enjoy country music and I

really didn’t have an ear for it when I was younger. Each Christmas I always try to find a new Christmas album that I like. This year my two favorites are “It’s Christmas All Over” by The Goo Goo Dolls and “You Make it Feel Like Christmas” by Gwen Stefani. Both are very talented artists and put a nice spin on some traditional favorites. Ok, enough rockin’ (around the tree)…let’s get down to stockin’. The absolute first thing I would suggest is that everyone open up a brokerage account if you don’t already have one. This also makes for a thoughtful last minute gift idea. Even if you have very little to contribute each month, just getting the account opened, making an initial deposit and executing your first trade will motivate you to build and grow it. I use Fidelity.com as they have everything you need on the research front throughout the site and only Continued on page 29

Continued from Page 28 takes a few minutes to get set up. Just to give you a basic comparison, the national savings account interest rate is .005% and the U.S. stock markets annual average return is approximately 10%. So, to put that in perspective, you will return annually $100 for every $1,000 you invest compared to $5 in a Savings account! Jim Cramer

recommends to start investing with an S&P 500 Index Fund or ETF (electronic traded fund) which have broad diversification and will help minimize sharp losses when the market is volatile. If you get in the routine of making routine contributions, you will be surprised how much your account can grow over time. On that note, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy, Rockin New Year... and all that jazz!

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

I am sure that most readers of this column have heard of Tommy John surgery (TJS), but before delving into that procedure, let’s first look at the anatomy of the elbow. Because the radius and ulna, the two bones of the forearm, cross over each other, we usually look at the forearm with the palm up and the thumb facing out. That way they are uncrossed. The radius extends from the elbow to just below the base of the thumb, while the ulna runs from under the elbow (the bony bump at the bottom of the elbow is the olecranon, part of the ulna) to the base of the palm opposite the thumb. The ulnar collateral ligament, or UCL, connects the end of the humerus, the upper arm bone, to the ulna. Throwing or pitching a ball, especially a baseball, puts

Armed With Facts

extreme tension on the UCL. Over time, repeated strain on this ligament may cause it to tear. This destabilizes the elbow and makes throwing a ball nearly impossible. Until 1974, a torn UCL usually meant an end to one’s sports career. A surgical procedure to repair a torn UCL with either a ligament from another part of the body or a donor graft, usually from a cadaver, was invented by Dr. Frank Jobe, team physician to the LA Dodgers. Dr. Jobe’s first test patient was Dodger’s pitcher Tommy John. The procedure, performed in 1974, allowed John to return to pitching after an extended period of rehab. Dr. Jobe put the odds of the procedure being successful at 100 to 1, but it worked, and since then this procedure has been done thousands of times. By 2009, the odds of successful recovery from TJS were 85 to 92%. Baseball pitchers usu-

ally need 12 to 15 months of rehab, while other players need about 6 months. 80% of pitchers return to pitching, however after two procedures about 35% do not. Research has shown that a torn UCL is an overuse injury. It was thought that certain pitchers, for example those who throw sliders, are more prone to the injury, but studies have proven that it is the number of pitches thrown that determines the risk of injury. This has led USA Baseball, MLB, and Little League Baseball to initiate the Pitch Smart program. This limits the number of pitches younger players can throw. It has also led to fewer cases of “Little League elbow,” an injury in which the epiphyseal plate (the “growth” plate at both ends of every bone in a child’s body), rather than the UCL, tears. This is a non-surgical injury that can be the end of a young player’s ca-

reer. Because some pitchers report that their arm is stronger after TJS, some parents of young players have asked physicians to perform it on their uninjured child, but thankfully most of those requests are turned down. A few words about Thomas Edward John, aka the “Bionic Man,” born May 22, 1943. He pitched in the majors from 1963 to 1989 with the Indians, White Sox, Dodgers, Yankees (twice), Angels, and A’s. He tore his UCL in 1974 pitching for the Dodgers against the Expos. He missed all of 1975, but won 164 games after returning from surgery, 1 win less than Sandy Koufax’s total # of wins. He won 288 games overall, which is the second highest number of wins by any pitcher since 1900 who is not in the Hall of Fame. Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes.com

From Dark To Light Lately, inspirational thoughts do not flow so effortlessly for me. I find myself having to pause and slow down more frequently. I am retreating more within my home finding comfort inside. As I write this column, it is winter solstice. A very special one in the planetary world. Saturn and Jupiter will come within degrees of one another. It will never happen like this again in our lifetime. Energies of Jupiter and Saturn illustrate this dance of yin and yang. Jupiter is said to represent growth and expansion. Saturn is discipline and

commitment. It can also be resistance. Polarities will meet and exchange energy. The universe is said to bring a positive wave of energy. Allow yourself to play with the darkness and light within yourself. The sun is shining brightly today and yet it was predicted to be full of clouds. Much has happened this past week in our small community. There has been loss of life, unbearable grief and much sadness. My sincere condolences go to all of you who are suffering. May you feel the divine grace sur-

rounding you during this difficult time. As we move into the winter, we are being called to slow down and rest. Be at home with yourself and contemplate what is important in your life. We are celebrating the transition from dark to light. We have been living with so much darkness this past year. A lot of time on our hands to reflect on the past, present and future. Even when it feels so dark there is never absence of light! Light always finds its way to work with the dark. Allowing us to see things more clearly. The source of light is within. Looking up we see light, looking down we see darkness. My upward gaze calls on the divine grace, my downward gaze feeds and supports my roots. Palms down, I ground into the earth. I begin to open up the spaces of my shadows. The polarity of dark and light is evident. There are many challenges so we are encouraged to pause, feel and be with them. There is a quality of heaviness and lightness in the air. Fully accepting rather than fighting the feelings will help you to open. Welcome it all. Integrations of the

Page 31 shadows allow feelings of clarity. Breathing deeply, I begin to allow the spaces to open. Kindness, compassion and forgiveness is the path to follow. Palms face up on my knees allows more of an ease in my flow of my energy. My breath celebrates the shared forces within myself. We need the dark to understand the light. Nurturing yourself and expanding through your heart will help to filter light. You are a beacon of divine energy. The Guest House by Rumi: This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival. A joy, depression, a meanness Some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor. Welcome and entertain them all! Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows, Who violently sweep your house Empty of its furniture, Still, treat each guest honorably, He may be clearing you out for some new delight. The dark thought, the shame, the malice, Meet them at the door laughing, And invite them in. Be grateful for whoever comes, Because each has been sent As a guide from beyond.

Tidings of the Season By Gille Ann Rabbin, Esq., CIPP/US

By Gille Ann Rabbin, Esq., CIPP/ US, CIPP/E

Faith. Joy. Peace. Family and friends. Fraudsters. Holiday time brings with it the blessings of the season. It also brings a proliferation of scams, some of which are described below. The media and government agencies including the FTC are urging consumers to be cautious when sharing information online and to take precautions to avoid common frauds that increase during the holidays. Fake charities reach out online and by phone this time of year to take advantage of goodwill (and the rush to obtain year-end tax deductions). Confirm the legitimacy of any charity before donating. Don’t donate through a link or by providing your financial information in response to a

call. Instead, support charities through their official websites or by initiating a call. Phishing, a type of email fraud, attempts to obtain your personal or financial information through an email that appears to come from a legitimate business like a bank, PayPal, eBay. The fraudulent mail will contain a message urging you to click on a link to provide information or conduct or confirm a transaction. Seasonal phishing attempts include asking for your or your child’s sensitive info to send a letter from “Santa. Exercise caution, including with messages that appear trustworthy. A legitimate business will never request sensitive info by email. Never click on a link in an email you are unsure about, even if you do not intend to transmit personal information. You could end up downloading malware. Holiday e-cards can also be

scary. They can contain viruses and other malware. Before you open an e-card from a friend, check that your friend is the one who sent it. Fraudulent websites abound at holiday time amid the increase in online commerce; this pandemic year has seen an almost 50% increase from last year. According to a recent survey, over 70% of shoppers are shopping online. To avoid having your personal information and financial accounts stolen, use reputable sites. Those offering sales too good to be true are likely scams. If you’re going to place an order, type the site’s address into your browser (don’t get to it through a link), then check the address carefully: typosquatters take advantage of our typos to get us to unknowingly land on their scam sites and transmit financial information to them. Consider paying by PayPal or a reputable credit card to take advantage of

their protections if something goes wrong. Gift cards are a popular gift option. If you purchase one at a store, check that the card’s activation code isn’t exposed; if it is a thief could have stolen the number with intention to use the card when it is bought and activated. (It may be safer to buy a gift card online through a merchant’s website.) Check also for any fees the card may have, such as for non-use, which can eat away at the value of the gift until it reaches $0, and that the card hasn’t expired. Take steps when sending a gift to ensure the delivery service doesn’t leave it on a doorstep to be stolen. Alert the recipient that a gift is coming or ask them beforehand where they’d like it sent so that it arrives securely. Consider using a shipping method that requires the recipient’s signature. Have a happy and fraud-free holiday season!

Coronavirus Vaccine Facts

By Peter Galvin, MD

Now that a COVID-19 vaccine has finally arrived, there is much confusion and disinformation being circulated about both the coronavirus and vaccines against it. The purpose of this column is to give the readers of this newspaper specific and accurate information about the vaccines that are and soon will be available so that, when the opportunity presents itself, you can make an informed decision on whether or not to get the vaccine. Here are the current and future vaccines developed so far: 1.Pfizer – messenger RNA (mRNA), Two doses required 21 to 28 days apart, requires a temperature of -94 degrees Fahrenheit (F) during transport, can be refrigerated at 36-46 F for five days. Emergency use authorization (EUA) approved by the FDA on 12/11/20. U.S. purchased 100 million (M) doses with option for another 500M. 2.Moderna – mRNA, Two doses required 21 to 28 days apart, transport at -4 F, can store at 3646 F for 14 days. U.S. purchased 100 M doses with option for 400M more. The Moderna vaccine got EUA from the FDA on Friday (12/18/20). 3. AstraZeneca/Oxford – modified adenovirus, Two doses required 21 to 28 days apart, requires refrigeration only, expected to get EUA in January 2021. U.S. purchased 300M doses 4. Johnson & Johnson – modified adenovirus, One dose only, requires refrigeration only, expected to receive EUA in January or February 2021. US purchased 100M doses with option for 200M more. Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have been shown to be 95% effective at preventing a COVID infection beginning seven days after the second dose. Efficacy was consistent across age, gender, race and ethnicity demographics. Observed efficacy in adults 65 and older was 94%. No Grade 4 safety concerns were observed (requiring ER or hospitalization)

and the only Grade 3 (prevents daily activity) adverse events greater than 2% in frequency were fatigue (3.8%) and headache (2.0%). Fever greater than 102 F was reported in 1.2%. The most common side effects, in descending order were fatigue, headache, muscle pain, chills, joint pain, fever, and diarrhea. Side effects rarely lasted more than two days and were more common after the second dose. Older adults tended to report fewer and milder side effects. The only contraindication to vaccination is a known history of allergy to it. Those with a history of severe allergic reactions should only take the vaccine at a site that has emergency services available (i.e., a hospital). Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding should consult their OB/ GYN provider. None of the vaccines contain any preservatives or mercury. As to safety, the FDA requires that a study should have a minimum of 3000 trial participants to assess safety. The trials for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines had 30,000 to 50,000 participants each. There are two advisory committees that ensure that the vaccines are safe and effective. They are the Vaccine and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) that advises the FDA and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) that advises the CDC. Both advisory boards are independent and made up of experts from academic institutions who are

vetted for conflicts of interest. Messenger RNA vaccines are a new type of vaccine. They work by giving our immune systems proteins containing instructions on how to make antibodies to the virus. The protein cannot build a virus. M RNA vaccines are also used to fight cancers. Two of the proposed vaccines contain modified adenovirus particles and are similar to current vaccines such as the flu vaccine. None of these vaccines contain live or killed viral particles, meaning that none of these vaccines can give you COVID-19. An EUA is used to get a vaccine available quickly during a crisis to save lives. The process is sped up, but no steps are skipped in the safety evaluation process, and the FDA, with the VRBPAC and ACIP, will still review all the data and information. At present, it is unknown how long immunity from vaccination will last. It is conceivable that COVID vaccination may become an annual recommendation, akin to the flu vaccine. As noted above, the first shot may give you some mild side effects. This does not mean that the vaccine has given you COVID-19. Rather, it means that the vaccine has activated your immune system. In other words, the vaccine is doing its job and it is vital that you follow through with the second dose. In some cases, an individual being vaccinated may already have COVID-19 and not realize it (no symptoms). If they later develop symptoms or test

positive for the virus, it does not mean that they got COVID-19 from the vaccine. After you are vaccinated, it is important to still wear a mask and maintain social distance as others around you may not have been vaccinated yet (remember, no vaccine is 100% effective so there’s still a chance, albeit a small one, that you could be infected despite being vaccinated). You will receive a card at the time of your first vaccination. Bring it with you for your second shot and keep it on your person. Initially, the vaccine will be offered to healthcare professionals, first responders including police, fire, and EMS personnel, and nursing home patients. As more vaccine becomes available, it will be given first to those at increased risk from the virus like older people and those with chronic diseases, especially if they impact the immune system. Eventually, it will be offered to the general public. At present, vaccination, while strongly advised, is voluntary. For more information you may ask the vaccine provider, contact your local or state health department, or visit these websites: www.cdc.gov/coronavir us/2019-ncov/index .html or www.fda.gov/emergenc y-preparedness-and-response/mcm-legal-regulatory-and-policy-framework/ emergency-use-authorization. Local Presents A Guide to the Dry January Challenge By Katie McFadden

Considering taking a break from drinking? There’s no better time to step back from “on the rocks,” and get on the wagon, than with the start of a new month, especially one that encourages making resolutions for the New Year. As we approach 2021, Hilary Sheinbaum is about the drop the perfect guide on how to take a month off from drinking with her first book, “The Dry Challenge: How to Lose the Booze for Dry January, Sober October, and Any Other Alcohol-Free Month.” Sheinbaum, who moved to Rockaway in the spring, brings firsthand knowledge to her guide to a dry month as she’ll be going into her fifth January of taking the challenge herself. What started as a bet with a friend, Alejandro, who she dedicated the book to, turned into an eye-opening experience of what life is like without alcohol, by simply taking an entire month off. As a reporter who covered the food and beverage beat for publications such as AM New York and USA Today and who covered celebrity red carpet affairs and after parties, alcohol was not only a part of her social life, but her job. So the challenge was anything but easy, but it was made more enticing with a motivating end goal. Sheinbaum says she was having dinner with Alejandro in December 2016, when he brought up the idea of a dry January. Doing what she does for a living, she found the idea preposterous. “I changed the subject as it was not possible I could go a month without alcohol,” Sheinbaum said. But it was while drinking on New Year's Eve that she had a change of heart. She texted Alejandro and they made a bet to get through January without a drop of alcohol and the loser would have to buy dinner for the winner at a restaurant of their choosing. In 2017, she celebrated as Alejandro treated her to dinner at Momofuku Ko. With peer pressure during a date, he had slipped up, but Sheinbaum stood steadfast in her battle against temptation.

But it was more than a good dinner and bragging rights that Sheinbaum earned. “My skin was nicer, I was sleeping better, I had so much more energy, I was more upbeat in general and I realized how much alcohol was affecting my day to day life,” she said. After seeing the perks firsthand, Sheinbaum has turned dry January into a yearly ritual and has even thrown some extra months into the mix. From her experience and through consulting with experts, Sheinbaum decided to share her experience with others by writing her very first book on the dry challenge. Her book, published by HarperCollins, is set to drop just in time for those New Year’s resolutions, on December 29. “The Dry Challenge: How to Lose the Booze for Dry January, Sober October, and Any Other Alcohol-Free Month,” contains everything from how to get started, how to stay motivated, how to handle those pesky “why aren’t you drinking?” questions, alternative ideas for how to have fun while sober, to even recipes for nonalcoholic cocktails and baking ideas to occupy the time. As someone who has done the challenge, Sheinbaum says this book is the guide she wishes she had when she did it. “When I started my dry January, I had no idea what I was getting into. I had no guidelines, no friends who had done it before, and especially that first year, I had so much to learn and observe. I received so many questions about why I’m not drinking or why I can’t have just one and I learned the answers to that and how to respond to those questions, so I put it into a book to help people to embark on their own dry January,” Sheinbaum said.

Some of the best answers are some of the perks to taking a month off. Sheinbaum outlines the advantages throughout her book, but she has some personal favorites. “One of the things I was surprised about was how it affected my sleep. Alcohol sedates you and might help you fall asleep easier, but when you metabolize it, it causes wakening, so it disrupts your sleep and it dehydrates you and makes you urinate more, so you get up throughout the night. If you’re a bad sleeper, I recommend cutting out alcohol. I was sleeping five hours a night and thought it was because of anxiety but during the first dry January, I slept seven to eight hours a night,” she said. Another big perk, she says, is the savings. “You save a ton of money because you’re not spending it on booze. I think it’s fun to look forward to having extra money at the end, so you can spend it on new boots or a coat or video games or whatever it is that will bring you joy,” she said. One of the most challenging aspects, Sheinbaum says, is how stopping drinking can affect your lifestyle and social circle, but she suggests one of the best ways to tackle this is to not go it alone. “I had a friend who I knew was supporting me

and going through the same thing, so I suggest that people do this with a friend, family or partner. My boyfriend who I live with does it with me now, which makes it easier because there’s not that constant reminder that alcohol is available when it’s out of sight. Your lifestyle and social circle is a big challenge in this, but when you have people doing it with you, it makes it easier,” she said. Sheinbaum says some local establishments also make it easier. “At the Rockaway Hotel you can order nonalcoholic beers and cocktails and more and more places are incorporating nonalcoholic beverages into their menus, so you can still feel like you’re drinking,” she said. After taking a month off, some may opt to lessen their alcohol intake or call it quits. But for those who get back into it, Sheinbaum suggests being prepared. “Stock up on coconut water and brace yourself for a brutal hangover because your tolerance is lower” she said. “Sip more slowly, remember to eat and hydrate or it won’t be the best time the next morning.” Sheinbaum’s book will be available starting Tuesday on Amazon, at Barnes and Noble, Target, Strand Bookstore and more.

Student Success Far Rockaway residents Sanaa Salah and Shareef Evans Jr. mixed art and science and came up Grand Prize Winners of Scholastic’s “Power of Green 2019 Student Contest,” co-sponsored by Con Edison. Both are students at Success Academy Far Rockaway, and together they earned a total of $3,000 in prize money: $500 each for themselves, $500 for their teachers, plus $1,000 worth of books for their school. Asked to illustrate and write about “What do you and your family do to keep your home safe from energy risks?” Sanaa and Shareef each created an original work of art on a 8½» x 11» sheet of paper and wrote short essays of up to 200 words. The contest took place in November and December of last year, but the announcement of the winners was delayed due to Covid-19. Unfortunately, the winning artwork is also inaccessible due to the pandemic. Students learned about energy risks such as gas leaks,

fallen power lines, charging electronics near running water, warm power circuits, among other energy safety risks. Contestants came from public and private schools from across the New York City Metro area in grades K-5. Sa-

to investigate and analyze real-world problems critically and systematically, grounded in a strong base of evidence. By the time they reach high school, students are offered pre-medicine, chemistry and engineering classes.
