Another decade down. Ring in the New Year right and celebrate the dawn of a new decade as we enter 2020. There is plenty to do around town if you don’t feel like leaving the peninsula on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. If you’re looking for a cozy, relaxing evening, Bungalow Bar is a nice option for New Year’s Eve. Cozy up by the fireplace and enjoy dinner and drink specials. Reservations are recommended. Call 718945-2100. If you’re looking for a nice meal followed by a celebration, Kennedy’s in Breezy Point is the spot. They’ll have a complete dinner special for $75 a person for reservations before 7:30 p.m., or indulge in a three-course surf and turf meal, which includes a champagne toast at midnight, hats and noisemakers, and dancing and music by Pamela and company for $100 a person.
For reservations, call 718945-0202. If you’re looking to end the year with a bang, Rockaway Brewing Company (415 Beach 72nd Street) is your best bet. They’re hosting a “Royal Masquerade” New Year’s Eve party starting at 9 p.m. A flyer for the event says, “come dressed to impress.” Masquerade masks are also encouraged.
There will be live performances by some of Rockaway’s resident drag queens including Ginger Ladd, Dreama Bell and more, plus plenty of dancing with music by DJ NakedNY. They will also have a live streaming of the ball drop from a wall-sized projection, a $500 giveaway courtesy of Tattoo Wonderland, and giveaways from Cuisine by Claudette and Vino By The Sea. General admission is free, but a VIP package is available. The $25 early seating special includes a guaranteed stool seat for the night to watch the performances, a beer on the house, plus coat check and noisemakers. For tickets, head to rockawaybrewco.com. In Rockaway, it’s all about New Year’s Day and there are plenty of places to celebrate. Healy’s Pub will feature live music by popular local group Blac Rabbit from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. RBQ will be serving up brunch, with live music by Magic Bones starting at 3 p.m. Many spots also ring in the New Year with a color. House on the Rock Brings Joy To the World The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear. Those from House on the Rock Church did just that on Friday, December 20, as they sang on the steps to the boardwalk on Beach 94th, and reminded passersby of the “reason for the season,”—the birth of Jesus. Although the night was brisk, carolers were kept warm with hot chocolate, joy and good company. Pastor Garry Patrylo led the carols, most of which were more spiritual, like “The First Noel,” “Joy to the World” and “O Come, All Ye Faithful” as they celebrated the true meaning of Christmas. House on the Rock Church holds services at the Waterside School on Beach 110th Street every Sunday. Cuomo Dumps on Jamaica Bay By Katie McFadden
As expected, Governor Andrew Cuomo decided to dump on Jamaica Bay. On Friday, December 20, Cuomo decided to veto a bill that would protect parts of Jamaica Bay from being used as a dumping ground for potentially contaminated fill. Cuomo’s decision came after both the Assembly and Senate passed the bill unanimously. However, the fight isn’t over. “We will immediately work with Senator Addabbo and Assemblywoman Amato to re-introduce legislation and start a campaign to ensure he hears from residents around the bay that he needs to step up and protect Jamaica Bay!” Dan Mundy of the Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers said after Cuomo’s decision. Despite the Assembly and Senate passing the bill unanimously, word spread after the bill came to Cuomo’s desk on December 10, that

he was thinking of vetoing it, which came as a surprise. “We thought this was a bunt,” Mundy said. Mundy believes it was the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation dredge management team that urged Cuomo to consider vetoing Assembly Bill A5767A. “This is supposed to be the DEC and the protectors of our environment that would be the catalyst behind this veto,” Mundy said. "This is due to their desire to bring contam-
inated dredge fill from the Hudson River into the bay and dump it into the deeper portions of the bay that they have conveniently named ‘borrow pits.” The sections of the bay that would be used include Little Bay and Norton Bay near Edgemere. According to Mundy, these deep areas have led to the addition of more wildlife and active fishing areas. “We never want to see this happen,” Mundy said of the potential dumping that will occur if permanent protections are not put in place. Currently, there are protections put in place to prevent this kind of dumping, but they are limited and are set to expire soon. The new bill, that Cuomo vetoed, would have made for more permanent protections. With the current protections expiring, there is urgency to put safeguards in place. According to Mundy, despite this veto, the fight will continue. Mundy says that not only
will the bill be re-introduced, but the Ecowatchers will begin circulating an online petition in the New Year to show Cuomo the support behind the measure. The news of Cuomo’s veto may come as a surprise to some, as Cuomo has stood up against many potential environmental threats, such as the proposed Williams pipeline, offshore drilling and and fracking, and he has put forth a plan to require that 70% of electricity consumed in the state will come from renewable energy by 2030. His contradictory action against Jamaica Bay has not gone unnoticed. “He’s done a number of things for the environment, so this is confusing,” Mundy said. SFDS Says Farewell to Fr. Jomar Legaspi By Marina Cregan
After more than a year of faithful service at St. Francis de Sales Church, the parish will soon mourn the departure of Associate Pastor, Fr. Jomar Legaspi. Fr.
Jomar’s role in the parish goes beyond serving mass and hearing confessions. He can be seen teaching fifth- and sixth-grade weekly religion classes and even taking photographs at local sporting events; including Rockaway Beach Volleyball and the Summer Classics. In his short time in Rockaway, Fr. Jomar has made an impact that will not be
forgotten. The Director of Religious Education at SFDS, Mrs. Anne Marie Greene, shared her sentiments with a heavy heart. Greene said, “Fr. Jomar’s cheerfulness and love of life has had such an impact on our parishioners, both old and young. He has willingly assisted in our Catechism program, the Bereavement Group, and has been a regular visitor to the Academy. Fr. Jomar’s connection to the community, whether through social media, meet-ups on the ferry into Manhattan, or preaching from the altar, have made him a well-loved and respected leader of our faith. He will truly be missed by all.” Social media is definitely Fr. Jomar’s forte. He is currently unable to accept Facebook friend requests, since he has exceeded Facebook’s allotment of 5,000 “friends.” Fr. Jomar said, “I guess I should delete some of my former students. However, I don’t want to because I love to hear what they have to say!” Some of these students are
from Holy Rosary Parish in Staten Island, Touro College where he was an adjunct professor, and the Don Bosco Technical Institute where he served as the technical director and principal. It is his love of teaching that he enjoys discussing most. Fr. Jomar’s

SFDS Continued from Page 6 show respect in the classroom. Although Fr. Jomar has been serving here in the United States for the past decade, he is originally from the Philippines. It is the similarities between the Philippines and Rockaway that made this his favorite place in New York. He continuously compares the landscape of the Philippines to that of the Rockaway peninsula. From the minute Fr. Jomar arrived in Belle Harbor in September 2018, he found a thriving community that was relaxing and good for his spirit. The atmosphere of the beach, the emphasis on sports, and the tightknit community were reminiscent of his hometown. He was amazed how by how much the community focused around the Catholic church. For a photographer, there was absolutely no better background than this oceanfront town. Serving in a community of peace came after enduring life-threatening challenges. In August 2009, it was found that bacteria in his heart had de-
stroyed one of his mitral valves. Hence, at the age of 50, he underwent open heart surgery and his mitral valve was replaced with a bioprosthetic valve. After that successful surgery, he faced an additional challenge. On February 11, 2010, coincidentally on the 21st anniversary of his ordination into the priesthood, he underwent surgery for the second time on his left knee due to an excruciatingly painful pseudoaneurysm, a partial clot. Today, Fr. Jomar considers himself incredibly blessed to be healthy and in his words, “living to the fullest.� Just last week, Fr. Jomar celebrated his 60th birthday throughout the parish. At the Harbor Light on Thursday, December 12, the Principal of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy (SFDSCA), Dr. Chris Scharbach Ed.D., and the faculty and parish staff enjoyed birthday cake and fellowship with Fr. Jomar. The following day, he was surprised by the sixth-grade students of SFDSCA with yet another celebration. Fr. Jomar currently serves un-

der the direction of Pastor, Reverend William F. Sweeney and with Associate Pastor, Reverend James Cunningham. These three fun-loving priests have truly embraced Belle Harbor and the greater Rockaway community. Some examples of their unique contributions include guest bartending at Jamesons Pub on August 1, 2019 during the First Annual “Holy Happy Hour,� dressing up as Toy Story best friends for the rectory’s trick-or-treaters, and modeling lederhosen at the parish Oktoberfest fundraiser. Fr. Jomar has enjoyed all aspects of service to the parish. He not only wears a collar but many hats through
preaching, teaching, and promoting the parish through social media. When reflecting upon his time on the peninsula, he says, “This will always be home to me. With the sand in my feet, how can I leave?� Fr. Jomar will be celebrating his final Mass at St. Francis de Sales Church on Sunday, December 29 at noon. All parishioners are invited to Mass and to the farewell reception immediately following in the Small Hall. Fr. Jomar’s service to the parish of SFDS truly embodies the immortal words of St. Francis de Sales, the parish patron himself—“Be who you are and be that well.�

Gateway National Recreation Area and National Park Service will be hiring surf lifeguards of all ages (over 16) at Riis Park Beach for the summer. To be eligible, interested applicants must first pass a swimming test which includes a 550 yards swim in less than 10 minutes and a 1 ¼ mile run in less than 12 minutes. Base pay range is $14.90 to $25.67/per hour; Sunday pay range is $18.63 to $32.09/per hour; overtime range is $22.35 to $38.51/per hour (according to current pay rates). Beach 116th Kicks Off the Festival of Lights By Ryan Schwach
With another holiday season comes another festival of lights for the Jewish people, and another Beach 116th Street menorah lighting for the Jewish community of Rockaway. About 50 people huddled underneath the large menorah in the middle of 116th Street, for the annual lighting held at sundown on the first night of Hanukkah. This year, the lighting was again held in memoriam of Noni Signoretti, the late co-owner of Brown’s Hardware, who passed away in 2015. “I wouldn’t miss this for the world,” said Lew Simon, who came out despite fighting off a cold. After a quick debate to which way was the front of the menorah and which side should
be lit first (A debate not uncommon to those lighting their menorahs at home), they began the lighting. This year, it is not only the first local Hanukkah celebration for new Temple Beth-El Rabbi Matthew Carl, but also the last for the long-time West End Temple Rabbi Marjorie Slome, who will be retiring in 2020. “We could all use a little extra light in our
lives,” said Rabbi Slome to the audience, in what would be her last sermon to begin a Rockaway menorah lighting. “I was always ambivalent about public square holiday celebrations,” she said to The Rockaway Times, “but it's grown on me.” Although a last for Slome, it was the first for Rabbi Carl. “It is exciting for me to have my first public event be Hanukkah,” he said, “A time not
like any other holiday,” as he described it. Both rabbis spoke of an old debate among Jewish scholars, Hillel and Shammai, (both of whom taught in the first century) about how one should light the menorah on Hanukkah. Hillel said we should light for “days completed,” (lighting one for each new day), where Shammai argued the opposite, that we should light all eight candles on the first night, and each night remove one. Hillel’s style of lighting the candles is the more common practice, spiritually speaking because it increases the holiness, rather than taking away from it. “At the darkest times, that's when we have the ability to bring more light,” Rabbi Carl said. This Hanukkah celebration comes after a duo of anti-Semitic acts on the Rockaway peninsula over Labor Day weekend, one in the sand on Beach 138th Street, the other at the Silver Gull Beach Club. “We still get hatred, no community is immune to that,” said State Senator Joseph Addabbo, who also thanked the 100th Precinct for their continued work in the community. “It was a difficult year for Jews,” said Rabbi Slome, although adding she is also “inspired to be lighting the candles.” Finally, the light was flicked on by Assemblywomen Stacey Pheffer Amato, who wished everyone a happy and healthy holiday, as the sun set over the bay.

FarRockNPC Brings Joy to Far Rock Kids with Toy Drive By Kami-Leigh Agard
This past Sunday, December 22, Knights of Columbus glowed with holiday excitement as scores of children and their families gathered for Far Rock National Pan-Hellenic Council’s (FRNPC) 2nd Annual Toy Drive. A whopping 250 toys were generously donated; however, what was even more special about the event was that it ushered in an afternoon of merriment for all in attendance featuring music provided by DJ Peter Vibes and DJ Nitroo; cotton candy, popcorn, balloon-twisting, face-painting, and a magic show from JJ The Clown; and a pop-up holiday market featuring a variety of vendors selling items ranging from apparel, jewelry, pastries, ice cream and food; plus a special guest appearance from fashion social media influencer, Imanistarboom of Switch17, who was vending her fashion pieces to everyone’s excitement.
For FRNPC founder and president, Curtis Turney-Rentas, the toy drive would not have been successful, much less possible without his team, sponsors and community who dove in to make the day special for the children. “With this toy drive, not only were we able to collect over 250 toys for children in the Far Rockaway community, but our goal was to give entrepreneurs an opportunity to not just get exposure, but also give back. I want to give a huge shout out to the Knights of Columbus for not just opening their doors for us to host our community’s holiday event, but also helping us promote it in conjunction with the 100th and 101st Precincts, and our numerous partners,” Turney-Rentas said. As for FRNPC vice president, Kiera Harris, notably an alum of the first graduating class of Scholar’s Academy, and now
a budding speech pathologist, the event was all about their organization’s mission to give back to the community. “We’re just a bunch of Far Rock kids who witnessed firsthand what our community needs—the right resources, education and role models. Even though we are still learning as we go hosting these events together, we're just seeking a greater goal—to elevate the community we’re from.” To host the holiday event, FRNPC partnered with St. John’s Hospital Children and Adolescent Services, the Civilian Complaint Review Board, Sheltering Arms, TD Bank (Five

In 2009, Machel Montano, the world-renowned King of Soca hailing from Trinidad, performed at Madison Square Garden in front of a crowd of more than 40,000 jubilant fans. At his side performing the hit, “With or Without You,” was a white guy, whose look shouted rocker, but as he sang and gyrated alongside Montano, waving a towel in the air, onlookers may have thought he was “Trini to the bone.” That guy is none other than Walker Hornung, originally from Howard Beach with deep-set Rockaway roots, who like his music icon, David Bowie, is known for being unpredictable with his constant sonic and aesthetic metamorphoses. How Hornung, known for his bands, Q-South, and Walker and Brotherhood of the Grape, became a soca star is astounding. However, what is even more endearing about the music man is though he experienced fame on the Caribbean soca circuit, performing before thousands, he’s just as content in his rock roots performing in local bars and charity events, and mentoring up-and-coming young artists. Hornung, born and raised in Howard Beach, lived in Rockaway for 20 years. He and his cousin, Jimmy Dowd, together first opened skateboard shop, Blood New York, and then started the Annual RockStock and Barrels surf, skateboard and music festival, which in 2020, will mark its 14th year. Hornung had already gained notoriety as a rocker with his band, Q-South, but he became a headliner performer when he started singing soca with Montano. How the surfer, skateboarder, rocker and family man dove headfirst into the Trinidadian soca scene was pure happenstance. Hornung shared, “I got introduced to Trinidadian Brooklyn-based producer, Brent Toussaint, who had heard my band, Q-South, and asked if I would be interested in singing the U2 vocals for the song, “With or Without You.” The original version
was just me singing. After that, I forgot all about it and went back to rock and roll. However, when Machel heard it, he asked if he could do a duet with me for his soca track. Then Brent called and asked if I would be interested in going to Trinidad and help push the album. So I flew down, performed the song with Machel, and the first night, the song literally blew up and became a number one hit.” “So in the 1990s when my soca career started, I went from being a rocker with fair recognition to a celebrity, where people in Trinidad, and even Brooklyn and Canada would say, ‘Hey, that’s Walker!’ and ask me for an autograph or to take a photo. It was crazy. I performed with Machel at Radio City Music Hall and Madison Square Garden before thousands of people, when I was used to just playing in front of hundreds. My daughter, when she went to college, and was signing her name to go into a room, the girl at the desk asked, ‘You know who Walker Hornung is?’ and she said, ‘It’s my dad,’ and the girl exclaimed, ‘Your dad is the singer from Trinidad!’” As for how Hornung even got into music, he said that singing healed him from tough circumstances in his life. “I came from a family of music lovers. When my father passed away when I was in the third grade, music became a salve for me. It has saved me during some tough times,” Hornung related. The 50-year-old said he is selftaught and has been singing live since he was a teenager. “The first gig I did in Rockaway was in 1985 when I was 16 years old at a bar called Fitzgeralds on Beach 108th Street, where the hockey rink is now located. I even played at a live television show at John Baxter’s hotel in 1996.” As for making a living performing music, Hornung was blunt. “When I had my three number one songs in Trinidad, I almost made nothing. It wasn’t huge money, but it was enough to keep your career going. Nowadays, you get pennies on Spotify. “Music today is more similar to the 1950s and early ‘60s, when it was a singles-oriented business. People used to put out a LP, become a onehit wonder and never be heard of again. It’s the same today when artists put out singles, opposed to when I came out on the tail end making albums. The album was a record in time, when you told a story with a collection of songs. Today, people don’t listen to a whole album. I know
that from my own children. If they like a single, maybe they’ll download a few more songs by the artist, but generally people don’t have that album-listening experience like they used to. As artists, how we make our money today is through performing, and it’s a catch-22 because in order to make good money performing, you need to have a hit record to draw people, and you can’t draw people without a hit record. So it’s like a snake eating its own tail,” he said. As for who is his biggest music influence, Hornung said, “My favorite of all time is David Bowie. He inspired me to explore different genres, while always preserving my voice. In June, I will be performing at the Eighth Annual London Bowie event. It’s a way for me to pay him back for all the influence and inspiration
he had on me.” Locally, on January 18, Hornung is hosting the Second Annual South Queens Ball at the American Legion in Broad Channel, filmed live on Queens Public Television. This ball will feature singer/songwriters, and each individual is going to perform their original songs, plus music paying homage to an artist that
has passed away. When asked what are three crowning achievements in his music career, Hornung said, “One is when my band, Q-South, first got signed for a record deal with Times Square Records. Two For The Rail Dear Editor: Last month, the MTA released the long-awaited Rockaway Beach Branch reactivation study and the conclusions confirmed what we have known all along; it will benefit overall ridership and all Queens families. To put it plainly, restoring service on this right-of-way would cut commutes substantially between south Queens and Manhattan, improve mobility within our borough, and promote economic growth for the borough and the entire city. The results of the study demonstrate that this project is not only possible, but completely necessary.
Earlier this week we were informed that the Queens Chamber of Commerce strangely supports a proposal that would create a public park on the deactivated right-of-way and ignore the transit needs of the entire borough. While we appreciate the benefits of public space, we are completely opposed to a park proposal that ignores the needs of Queens residents and are outraged that the Queens Chamber of Commerce would choose to support the creation of a park—with no transit options—over economic development. The few local residents and outside interest groups that are advocating for a park already enjoy significant access to public parkland not to mention expansive transit options and commutes of 30 minutes or less to midtown Manhattan. There is absolutely no reason why the residents of southern Queens and Rockaway shouldn’t be afforded that same opportunity. The utilization of this abandoned right-of-way would open opportunity for thou-
sands of local businesses and would promote access to jobs for all of Queens—all of which the Chamber should be promoting and facilitating; not publicly denouncing. Even more ironic, there was once a time when the Queens Chamber of Commerce was on the right side of this issue. In a 1971 NY Times article, the incoming Queens Chamber president actually proposed an extension of transit service into Rockaway, he further went on to advocate for transportation in the borough saying: “Over two million people live here but we can't get the right time on transportation. Queens has always been treated as a stepchild but we're not going to be treated as second-class citizens any more.” It seems the Chamber has lost their way. Our community has seen a major construction boom and resurgence post Sandy. We’ve seen growth firsthand with the expansion of the hugely successful Resorts World Casino, the revitalization of JFK, the
Page 21 investment in Downtown Far Rockaway and Edgemere Commons, which will create over 5,000 units of housing. The renaissance of the Rockaway Peninsula has created a worldclass destination for everyone to enjoy, and the overall growing population demonstrates that the restoration of this rail line is needed now more than ever. We both believe that southern Queens, Rockaway and the entire borough of Queens would be better served if this forgotten track once again fulfilled its original purpose as a much-needed transit option. We urge the Queens Chamber of Commerce to reconsider their misguided stance on the project. The time to improve transportation in our community is now and we will continue to move forward—all aboard! Cholesterol is made by the liver, predominantly in the evening hours of the day. Statins (Crestor, Lipitor, etc.) are one of the most widely prescribed medications in the world and are used to lower cholesterol levels. However, their use in patients is often inappropriate because these medications have some unique properties not seen in other pharmaceuticals. Today, I would like to discuss some misconceptions about statins. Statins work in the liver to reduce cholesterol levels. They inhibit the enzyme HMG CoA reductase, a key enzyme in the cholesterol synthesis pathway. Consequently, by reducing cholesterol levels, they also reduce levels of LDLc, aka “bad cholesterol,” but by what is known as a downstream process. The liver has LDLc receptors that remove LDLc from the blood. Lower-

Statins Are Effective ing cholesterol levels raises the number of LDLc receptors, thereby removing more LDLc. Two researchers won the Nobel Prize in 1985 for discovering this process. When statins were first introduced, they had short half-lives (survival time in the bloodstream), which meant they had to be taken in the evening to be effective. Newer, high-potency statins were introduced (Crestor, Lipitor), which have much longer half-lives. In fact, Lipitor has active metabolites (breakdown products) that make its half-life effectively nearly 30 hours. This means that these high-potency statins do not need to be taken at night but can be taken in the morning with other medications. This patient convenience factor is a significant reason to use only high-potency statins. Another factor favoring their use is that high doses of lower-potency statins like simvastatin (i.e. 80 mg) can lead to a life-threatening muscle breakdown condition called rhabdo-
myolysis. Statins reduce coronary events as well, but not just because they lower cholesterol levels. They are also strong anti-inflammatory agents and they lower inflammation markers like C-reactive protein. By reducing inflammation, they stabilize existing blood vessel plaques (deposits in arteries) and prevent them from breaking off and causing a heart attack or stroke. Also, statins impair glucose tolerance, meaning they may cause small elevations in hemoglobin A1c and may cause someone with pre-diabetes to become an overt diabetic. This diabetogenic effect is dose-related and is not seen in doses under 20 mg, another reason to use high-potency statins. At any rate, most pre-diabetics progress to diabetes on their own anyway, and the cardioprotective effects of statins, especially in diabetics, is too great to be ignored. Many patients are convinced that statins give them muscle
aches (myalgias) and therefore refuse to take them. This is called a nocebo effect and has been shown in many studies. The nocebo effect, which is believing that you have a known side effect of a medication, is the opposite of the placebo effect, which is believing that you received an expected positive result of taking a drug despite taking the placebo and not the drug. As we age, most of us, me included, get lots of muscle aches and soreness. Studies have shown that when given a series of medications including a statin, most self-proclaimed statin intolerant subjects were unable to identify which drug was the statin. True statin-related myalgia is rare and occurs in about 1 out of 1000 statin users. Statins are safe and effective medications to prevent cardiovascular events. The Christmas Gift of Presence By Kathy Pastina
Years ago, my family and I had to attend to the task of sorting through our parents’ home. Slowly but surely, we cleared away years of clutter, one step at a time. It’s a tough process fraught with a lot of emotion. One thing that filled my heart with warmth, love and connection with my mom was seeing that we shared similar paths of being a spiritual seeker. Growing up, we watched my mom go to church every day, pray and read many spiritual books. She would rise at dawn, say her prayers then get to the business of her day. I never paid much attention until I was a mother myself. Some of my favorite memories are when we would attend retreats together and our chats over tea. Simple
things in life. My dear mother Marilyn was devout and had accumulated many books over time and what was surprising to me as I cleaned up my parents’ home, was that I had gravitated to some of the very same authors and mystics I found on her bookshelf such as Anthony de Mello, Fr. John Girzone, Thomas Merton, and St. Teresa of Ávila. Gathering the books up from the bookshelves, I knew I couldn’t part with them. They were part of her path and a beautiful legacy of the light-filled life she lived. When my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, I watched as she slowly lost her ability to read those books and pray her prayers. Conversations were simple and eventually the silence came, and she said very little, but her spirit was always there. She never lost her ability to feel love and always lit up when together with loved ones. She was physically here and yet I
missed her desperately. The holiday season brings back all the memories of our loved ones and they are the gifts we hold onto for warmth. The most precious gift I had one Christmas was three minutes with my mom. As I rushed in one Christmas Eve morning, I found her in her usual spot nestled in the couch with her favorite blanket and a stuffed Sesame Street Grover clad in holiday red that she loved to hug. Grover had a perpetual smile smacked on his face that seemed to bring her joy. I smiled at the sight and said, “Hey Mom! How are ya today?” and was greeted with the usual sound of silence. But as I walked past her a few more steps she responded, “Hi Kathleen, how are you? Where is everyone?” My heart skipped a beat. My mom is here! She said my name! I turned and slowly saddled up next to her. I knew that whatever neurons were firing in her brain and had brought her
back to me would only last for a few precious seconds. We talked gently and sweetly, she asked about family. I reassured her we would all be with her later that day, but she was here now! We held hands, talked about things. I made her laugh and heard her old familiar giggle. I told her I love you, we all love you so much and suddenly the fog rolled in and she was gone again. That opportunity never happened again. That Christmas Eve morning, I had the divine gift of three minutes with my sweet mom. It was the most precious present I have ever been given. The most valuable gift of time, presence, and love. “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched, but felt with the heart.” The gift is simple this year! Lots and lots of Presence! May the gift of Peace and Love be yours this season and all year through. Namaste!

The Madam Will Be Missed By Lou Pastina
We don’t have a woman Secretary of State anymore. Hillary Clinton was the last, Condoleezza Rice was one and so was Madeleine Albright. But I am not writing about “real” secretaries of state, I’m referring to the television show with Téa Leoni. On that show, Téa played a CIA analyst who became secretary and then became president. The show just recently aired its final episode. I’m not weighing
in on politics, that’s what Facebook is for (LOL!). Rather, I want to focus on an aspect that gets overlooked too often, and the impact it has on America. The TV show, Madam Secretary, was one of the shows that liked to riff on current headlines and weave moral stories into its segments. My father didn’t like the show because he thought they were too liberal, and I have to say, he was right. But in all the years that I watched the show, they never glorified vio-
lence, horror or gratuitous sex. I would have been ok with two or three of those, but they hit the trifecta. I am not advocating that everyone starts watching the Hallmark Channel Christmas shows starting in July, but how many shows about Evil, Special Victims, or Criminal Minds do we really need? How many shows opt for the shoot-out, or the knife fight, or some cadaver laying on a slab in the morgue with the autopsy results half splattered on the screen. And all in prime time. I know I am being a bit prudish about this and

there is far worse on the internet, but when did we stop caring as a country about what gets broadcasted into our homes. Notwithstanding the great acting opportunity for the one who gets to lie on the slab and hold their breathe, do we really need to see all the blood and gore and insinuation of evil in the world? I was a little too young to watch the original shows, but each show was a mini-morality play, highlighting good and evil, right and wrong, and yes, the show was in black and white, just to highlight the issues (color didn’t come ‘til later in TV land). Among the stars of Wagon Train was Ward Bond. He was a good friend of John Wayne and appeared in many of Wayne’s movies, so I wasn’t too surprised when an episode about Ulysses Grant had a cameo by John Wayne. But the message was clear, do the right thing, just like John Wayne and Ward Bond. I’m not sure that Spike meant the same thing. So why am I so wound up about Madam Secretary? Because I think we need shows that depict human situations
and how we can “do the right thing.” And not just for the kids, there are plenty of adults who could use remedial instruction, too. But rather we get tutorials on how to be a terrorist or how to be evil. Wouldn’t it be better to bring back ethics, morality, right and wrong? I’m not saying that there is a bright line here, and God knows I have been on both sides of the line in my life, but it would be nice to be reminded that good exists, that kindness is not weakness, that strength is standing up for what is right. I guess the real reason I’m upset is that Madam Secretary ended its run is not because they ran out of ideas, but because of low ratings. Low ratings! So, I guess America voted with their TV sets and Madam Secretary was voted out of office. And the real tragedy here is that now I have to find a new show, and they are so hard to come by without having to subscribe to a hundred different streaming companies! Ugh!

Little North Pole Continues to Thrill The Little North Pole is the gift that keeps on giving. After the big lighting on December 3, the festivities continued. On Wednesday, December 18, those from St. Camillus’ Special Olympics program got their own lighting celebration that included food, music and a visit from Santa Claus who had toys for all of the guests. Then on Monday, December 23, a group of senior citizens were welcomed for their own celebration with Santa’s elves (pictured here). The home, located at 14403 Neponsit Avenue, also has a special feature this year— dancing lights! Every half hour, starting at 4:30 p.m., the home puts on a roughly 10-minute performance where the lights dance and the Christmas trees above the garage sing to Christmas songs. Even cooler?

Bugalou is back! The popular concert series will launch its third season in February, with the first of three shows scheduled for the winter and spring of 2020. THE THE BAND BAND (TTTB) (that is the full name!) will bring its outstanding homage to its namesake back to St. Camillus Springman Hall on February 28. This was one of the most well-received shows from Bugalou's initial season, and that show led to a stint for Rockaway's own Walter Ensor, filling in with TTBB for a number of shows when their regular guitarist was out of action for a period. The TTBB horns will once again accompany the core group, providing a full, rich sound on such classics as Up on Cripple Creek, Stage Fright, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, the Shape I'm In, Ophelia, and The Weight. The night will begin with a celebration of another Canadian music legend, Neil Young. Real Young and Lazy Horse has quickly gathered a devoted following here in Rockaway, off of outstanding performances at Rockaway Brewing Company, Rippers, Rockaway Beach Surf Club, and elsewhere. This will be their first appearance at Bugalou, with a future date already in the works. Likewise, Desert Highway was
one of the highlights of Bugalou Season 2 with their Tribute to The Eagles, blending great harmonies with ringing guitars, on songs including Hotel California, Take It Easy, Already Gone, Lyin' Eyes, One of These Nights, and many more. Fools Night Out will begin the night on April 24, as Danny Moran, Mark Magliaro and company will be bolstered by the addition of Alan Gabay, back in Rockaway after many years in the Miami music scene. Bugalou's third show promises to be quite the party to mark the transition from spring to summer, as Finnegan Blue flies in from San Diego for its unique soulful blend of Irish/Americana/Jam music fronted by the fabulous Fleming family. Danny Mulvanerty and Bobby Butler are cooking up a special recipe to start the night on June 19, with guests to be determined. Rogers Celebrates with the Party of the Century By Katie McFadden
It was the party of the century. Regular patrons joined new ones, as the Rogers family joined the McMahons, and everyone enjoyed the craic as they sang along to live music and said cheers, with pints of Guinness, to the oldest bar in Rockaway on its 100th Anniversary—Rogers. As The Brooklyn Bards played some traditional Irish tunes, patrons linked arms and swung around between sips of beer, setting the tune for the evening to come. A highlight of the celebration included a presentation by Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato of a New York State Proclamation to the Rogers family for keeping the business going for so many decades, and to the McMahon family for taking over the taps in 2015 and making the longtime establishment even better. It was the business’ long history that Pheffer Amato highlighted in her speech. “Today is not just about this being a great small business. It’s about our history here in Rockaway and celebrating Rogers’ 100 years of being an establishment, a bar, a place where we’ve gathered for over 100 years. I’ve been here many times and know the good times we’ve had sharing a pint with our friends, playing darts, enjoying music or just coming here at two o’clock in the morning because it’s the only place open, and that’s okay. It’s what we do in Rockaway,” Pheffer Amato said. “The Rogers family started it and when the McMahon family took over, it was great because we don’t want things to stop existing here in Rockaway. The progress is here. The renaissance is happening. They’re building down the block. More restaurants and bars have opened. But we all know, especially this time of year, when our friends and family are coming back, that we like to go to those places that are of our youth, that have been there forever. We want our history here in Rockaway,
and preserving it and being here for a hundred years, and being good patrons is what being good community members is about, so my proclamation today is for all of us. It’s celebrating 100 years of good people like us, hardworking Americans, and coming here when times are bad, and we’ve been through some bad times in this town, and knowing you can open the door, grab a beer and talk to a bartender and he cares, and it’s owners like the Rogers and now the McMahons that continue to keep a fine establishment like this open in our town. It is my honor to present you this proclamation. Cheers to Rogers on 100 years!” As the bar full of patrons cheered, current owner, Mike McMahon, and former owner, Rich Rogers, accepted the proclamation. Upon accepting the honor, McMahon said, “Thank you for the proclamation, but I really want to thank Richie Rogers and his family for keeping the waves rolling. I just took over what he started. And if it wasn’t for the Rockaway people, there’d be no Rogers, so thank you for coming.

The evening commenced with free food like shepherd’s pie and corned beef sandwiches, making it feel like an early St. Patrick’s Day party, as people danced to the tunes of Walter Ensor and Wine With Sue, who closed out the evening with their party hits and Christmas jams for the pre-holiday gathering. In the season of giving, a 50/50 also went around, with patrons purchasing tickets to help a neighbor in need, local Hurricane Sandy hero, Michael McDonnell, who is now facing health hardships, and to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Former owner, Rich Rogers, and his family were thrilled to celebrate their family legacy. “This is a great thing. It’s always been a fun place and it’s always been my favorite little bar,” Rogers said. He reflected on some of the changes he had seen as owner of the oldest bar in Rockaway. “When I started here about 45 years ago, the beer was 15 cents, and when it went up to a quarter, people said, 'They'll all be out of business soon. No one would pay that price,"' he recalled. With a room full of patrons paying on average, $5-6 a beer, it’s clear that the Rogers family, and now the McMahons, have proven everyone wrong. Seeing the changes since he sold the business in 2015, Rogers
said he was proud of his decision. “Mike and Jimmy McMahon and the whole family are wonderful people. They live in Rockaway and care about Rockaway and this really is a great place. They’ve done a beautiful job,” Rogers said. His brother, Neil Rogers, agreed. “This is living history. Thousands of people have had a good time in this building and it just gets better every day,” Neil Rogers said. Popular longtime bartender, Brendan Jones, who will soon be celebrating a personal anniversary of working as a bartender for 50 years, was proud to serve patrons along with the rest of the staff throughout the night. “It feels great to be here. Rogers is so well known now, from Breezy to Rockaway. It’s great for everybody,” he said. What is it about Rogers that has kept it going for so long? “The bartenders are a big help, and the reputation that it has,” Jones said. Mike McMahon, whose
whole family came out for the occasion, including his own sons, Kevin and Ryan, who helped behind the bar, was beaming throughout the night. “We’re so happy. To the many loyal customers of Rogers who came back to join the Rogers family and the McMahon family, thank you for making this a pleasurable day for everybody,” he said. With McMahon making significant improvements to the longtime establishment, including eventually re-opening the hotel and restaurant, it looks as if Rogers has a promising future. McMahon agreed. “I’m hoping that my family will be here doing this in 100 years’ time,” he said.

Manhattan’s Little Italy section used to be across Canal Street from China Town. In recent years, “Little Chinaly…” Yup, that’s a combo of Little
Italy and China Town has become known not only for pizza and garlic knots, but for egg drop soup and General Tso’s chicken. Chinese establishments have migrated northward, crossing Canal Street and encroaching on their Mediterranean brethren. While the Italian eateries still predominate and the San Gennaro Festival is the major tourist event of the year, one wonders how long it’ll be before Mandarin becomes the most common language instead of Italian. For purists, there is an option for those looking to score a good Italian meal and it’s not all that far away…The Bronx. From February 3 through February 13, Arthur Avenue in The Bronx will be hosting the inaugural “Little Italy in The Bronx Winter Restaurant Week.” Those who choose to brave the New York winter will have the opportunity to enjoy pre-fixe lunches for $20 and at dinner time, a pre-fixe threecourse meal for only $30. As
with everything else, there is a caveat—these prices exclude tax, booze and tip. There will be some more expensive offerings for those who choose to hit the wallet harder. But take note—if you plan to take advantage of this ethnic dine-around, the offerings are only valid from Monday through Thursday. Arthur Avenue may not have the fame or panache of Manhattan’s Little Italy, but there is a plethora of dining establishments, bakeries and other shops oriented to the boot-shaped country. And parking here, as opposed to Manhattan, is much easier. There is considerable history to the restaurants participating in the program. Mario’s is celebrating its centennial this year and over the course of its history has played host to such celebrities as Elizabeth Taylor, Martin Scorsese (more recently than the late Ms. Taylor), Gov. Nelson Rockefeller, Anna Moffo, and it was also the location for an episode of the popular television show, The Sopranos. Not all celebrities were diners at Arthur Avenue. Actor Joe Pesci was working at a local restaurant as the maître d when Robert De Niro came in for a meal. The two struck up a relationship and Pesci found a new and more well-paying profession with De Niro’s help. At the opposite end of the longevity chain on Arthur Avenue is MangiPasta, which opened last year and has earned a loyal following in that short time. That could be because the fastcasual eatery is owned and run by a Neapolitan couple cooking authentic Italian cuisine with fresh produce prepared by hand on a daily basis.
Habitués of the area like to refer to it as “Real Italy” and claim that the Belmont neighborhood “…features New York’s best, authentic Italian restaurants, butcher shops, bakers, delis, pastry shops and specialty stores." Most businesses, especially the eateries, are owned and operated by the same families that founded them in the early 1900s. If you’d like to forego the Restaurant Week and wait for warmer weather, Arthur Avenue is within walking distance of Fordham University, the Bronx Zoo, Botanical Gardens and the Fordham Metro-North Railroad station. For “Newbies,” the borough should always be referred to as “The Bronx” with an upper case “T.” The reason for that is several centuries ago much of the land was owned by a Swede named Jonas Bronck. People going to visit would say they were going to The Broncks. New York has its own lexicon when it comes to street names. Manhattan’s Houston Street is referred to by locals as “Howston” while Brits call it “Hooston” and to Texans, of course, it’s “Hewston.” So whether you are going to Katz’s Deli or Arthur Avenue, make sure your pronunciation of the locations are correct…”Howston Street” and “The Bronx.” be very hot. Season the steaks with salt and pepper. Add to the pan and grill for 7-8 minutes. Turn the steak and top with garlic butter. Let the garlic melt over the steak and spoon the butter over steak during the cooking. The second side should cook another 6-7 minutes. This will give you medium rare. I like to add Peter Luger sauce for dipping.
Serves: 2 Ingredients: 2 (8-10 ounce) ribeye steaks 2 tablespoons olive oil Salt and pepper to season 3 tablespoons of garlic butter (softened) Directions: Make sure steak is room temperature. Add the olive oil to the steaks and cover with saran wrap and let sit on the counter for at least ½ hour (up to an hour). Heat your grill pan. It must

FAR ROCK STATION 1920s
The Rockaway Beach trolley used the track in the station and then ran out across Mott Avenue to its own track towards Hammels Station, with stops at Edgemere and Arverne, and was then switched to the boulevard for points west. The Far Rockaway trolley ran down Central Avenue to Brookhaven, where a turn led the trolley to Beach 19th Street for the run to the beach. On the way back, the trolley turned on New Haven and ran to Central again for the trip back to the station. On the left are the layup tracks and the freight yard at Far Rockaway Station. The station building is at the right with a small newsstand out on the platform, and the freight office is at the center of the photo. The
tower at top left is the Russell Sage Memorial Presbyterian Church on Sage Street. The Rockaway News printing plant is also at right center, and up the line is Teddy’s Restaurant, retail stores, the gas and electric company, and telephone buildings, plus Winkler’s Storage Warehouse and Rug and Carpet Cleaning. The Far Rockaway Shopping Center occupies the site of the old Far Rockaway LIRR Station (1869 to 1957) at Mott and Central Avenues. Recently my grandma was working on a cryptogram, and exclaimed, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kami, you have to hear this!â&#x20AC;? What she uncovered was the following: â&#x20AC;&#x153;What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us.â&#x20AC;? Intrigued, I started researching as to who was the quoteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s author. Erroneously, it was believed that it was Ralph Waldo Emerson, but in fact it was NYC financier, Henry Stanley Haskins, who after being ousted from Wall Street over some bacchanalia in the 1940s, anonymously wrote the book, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Meditations in Wall Street,â&#x20AC;? in which the quote was first cited. Even more mind-blowing was the foreword to the book penned by American author and educational theorist, Albert Jay Nock: â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is the

brain which does the thinking, not the thought; it is the soul which moves us forward, not ourself.â&#x20AC;? Talk about, â&#x20AC;&#x153;POW! Right in the kisser!â&#x20AC;? Folks, my mind spun because my 11-year-old daughter with autism immediately came to mind. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us.â&#x20AC;? To break it down, first, what lies behind us? I started to think about all the obstacles, tears wept and frustrations of the past with our journey trying to understand my daughterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s particular â&#x20AC;&#x153;brandâ&#x20AC;? of autism. Parents, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure you could relate. However, our children have shocked us with their development and aptitude to learn, despite the dire forecasts. obstinate as a mule. She understands everything, but just refuses to perform like she is on a stage, and sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s damn right! Who wants to feel like a onetrick pony? As for what â&#x20AC;&#x153;lies before us.â&#x20AC;? That I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know, but as parents of faith, all we can do is pray, work steadfastly, and let go and let God. Instead of haranguing over the milestones our children are expected to conquer, why not focus on the here and now? As for â&#x20AC;&#x153;what lies within us?â&#x20AC;? Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all relative. Society pressures us to be future-driven. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not saying that we shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t set goals, but why not focus and appreciate what our children with autism are doing NOW, as opposed to fretting on what they will do or not do TOMORROW? As Nock wrote, â&#x20AC;&#x153;â&#x20AC;Śit is the soul which moves us forward, not ourself.â&#x20AC;? So why not invite our childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s souls to propel us forward? Accept
they are different, accept they are nonconformists immune to societal norms and expectations. My daughter is ambling along, marching to the beat of her own drum. As my grandmum says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;What happened yesterday is a five-minute story,â&#x20AC;? and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure Haskins would agree. So much time is wasted bemoaning the past and fretting over the future. So parents, in 2020, march alongside with your child. Though challenging, enjoy the journey. Man, Oh Man, The Gingerbread Man
On my travels recently, I stopped into a bakery out on the Island on Sunrise Highway, having been drawn to the shop's window display of Christmas-related baked goods and confectioneries. Upon entering the establishment, I was immediately overwhelmed by the delicious aromas therein and using my nose as a compass, I soon found my way to a rather delicious-looking display of my all-time favorite holiday cookie—a Gingerbread Man. I am certainly not alone in my passion for this treat as even William Shakespeare in his Love's Labor's Lost opined: "And I had but one penny in the world, thou should’st have it to buy gingerbread." The first gingerbread man is credited to Queen Elizabeth I who knocked the socks off visiting dignitaries by presenting them with one baked in their own likeness. Gingerbread tied with a ribbon was popular at fairs and when exchanged, became a token of love. On a more practical note, before refrigeration was a twinkle in someone’s eye, aromatic crumbled gingerbread was added to recipes to mask the odor of decaying meat. But I digress. I must have been standing in one place, drooling from my mouth, while unabashedly staring at the assorted gingerbread cookie treasures in front of me for some time when a store employee clad in a white apron, baker’s hat and a brilliant smile approached me, asking if she could be of service. I quick-
ly related my long-time love of these treats and asked the price of the individual gingerbread man cookies. Suddenly the employee's warm friendly visage dissolved into a somewhat stern countenance as she replied with an air of superiority, "Our shop rejects not only sexism and gendered expectations, we also, as an enlightened business, reject the gender binary itself. The cookies are $2.50 each but, in our store, we require that everyone refer to each cookie as a gender inclusive gingerbread person." I was all set to depart the store without making a purchase as I really did not want to engage this apparently self-important dough puncher in a debate surrounding the gender (or lack thereof ) of a biscuit, but a gingerbread man "Jones" is what it is. The gingerbread man sitting in the baker’s pan before me, replete with sorrowful raisin eyes and cherry nose, trimmed right down to his fingers and toes, was suddenly calling to me in a whisper that only a true g-bread dude aficionado could hear.... "For God's sake, please get me out of this politically-correct misandrist torture chamber." I couldn't help myself as I "accidentally" knocked over a display stack of bread sticks and as the staff person was busy setting that straight, I quickly turned and said, "C'mon gingerbread man, you know how to run. Get out of that pan and jump down to the floor and get your gingerbread man body right out of this store." And as he jumped down and scampered through the store and out the front door, he glanced back at the baker standing beside me and yelled, "Run, run, as fast as you can, you can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man and I'm out of the pan!" As the little gingerbread dude disappeared from view, I turned towards the baker still beside me, holding the bread sticks fully expecting to be excoriated for assisting in the little guy's escape and offered to pay for the bread sticks as well as the now missing and apparently pan-sexual gingerbread thingy. To my surprise, the baker sim-
ply sighed and said, "That's the fifth gender inclusive gingerbread person to make a break for it today. They are quick little devils, aren't they? You know, quite frankly, they are proving to be more trouble than they are worth. Perhaps I could interest you in some gingerbread houses we have at the back of the store?" I thought for a second and then replied, "Only if it is inclusive, affordable gingerbread housing with gender neutral bathrooms!"
The moral of this little story? Get over yourself and stop worrying about the myriad of insanely inane issues that are touted by those supercilious elites among us who love to hear themselves preach and focus on what's really important—family, friends and community. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Santa Sleigh Keeps Running Did you hear jingling, ho-hohoing and the general sounds of a party rolling through town? It may have been none other than the 7th Annual Santa Sleigh Run. While the head Mrs. Claus, Lakia Echols, founder of MakeMyMotherProud, was unable to lead the sleigh this year, it still went off without a hitch, bringing holiday cheer to kids throughout the neighborhood. Echols is currently deployed in the Middle East, so she couldn’t be here for the event she helped start, but she was there in spirit. “Being deployed is one of the most diffi-

St. John’s Provides Holiday Cheer Hundreds of children attended St. John’s Episcopal Hospital’s (SJEH) Children’s Holiday Party at the Rockaway YMCA where they received gifts, participated in face-painting and games, and took photos with their favorite super heroes. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the annual event. Over 800 people (including parents and guardians) attended the festivities. Thousands of toys were generously donated from local organizations including FDNY EMS, the NYPD’s 100th Precinct, the SJEH Auxiliary, hospital staff, the Richard Brodsky Foundation, the Episcopal Churches within the Diocese of Long Island, and other local organizations. Additionally, more than 50 volunteers
helped make the event a success including the NYPD, the FDNY, students from the Academy of Medical Tech, SJEH staff and auxiliary members, and many others.
