40 Degrees It’s not exactly a secret but just in case you never gave it a second thought, end of year lists and year in review articles are publishing’s lazy way of filling up the paper. I’d like to slip in a Top 10 of something but I can’t get to ten on anything. I used to be a movie buff but I don’t think I watched a single feature film this year. It was so much easier when the long-gone Surfside Cinema was still open. Or, for that matter, when the

4:30 p.m. movie was an everyday thing. I can’t remember when a movie had everybody talking about it. Don’t tell me, Star Wars, you freaks. Off the top of my head, I guess Titanic was the last movie that, at the very least, everybody heard of. And that was twenty years ago. I mean, Birdman won Best Picture in 2015 and The Artist won in 2012. If you talk about those, you have one-sided conversations.

So I can’t do a Top 10 movie list for 2017. There’s another Top 10 that’s just about impossible to recall at year’s end. Throughout the year, a beautiful day with no humidity, not a cloud in the sky, suddenly presents itself and you say, “Top ten day, maybe top five.” But at the end of December, you look back and you can’t remember any of the top days. You know there were some spectacular days but you can’t remember if it was a 65-degree day in February or a 75-degree day to break up a hot spell in July. In the greatest TV series of all time, The Wire, one of the characters talks about a 40-degree day in the wintertime. There’s no way to remember it. A 50-degree day brings a smile, a 60-degree day and people are firing up the barbecue grill. The 40-degree day tag is applied to anything not memorable. If a movie, a sporting event, a meal, anything really — if it’s just so-so, it’s a 40-degree day. Hey, this space is no different.

Page 5 Most weeks, Boyleing Points is a 40-degree day. (Though it’s helpful when I just rerun forgettable columns). Anyway, I got stumped on Top 10 things, so I surveyed friends about how they ranked 2017 on a scale of 1 to 10. A couple of people shocked me when they said the year was great and they’d probably give it a 9 or 10. This made me suspicious, made me think they just have terrible memories. Maybe the last week was a 9 or 10 but the whole year? Shows you how my mind works, I started thinking of world events that would make them reconsider and give the year a 7 or 8. But I kept the dark stuff to myself and was both jealous and happy for them. Pointing out bad stuff reminds me of the old joke, “Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?” So how’d I rank 2017? I guess, the best of times and the worst of times. I’m still worried we all might look back on it like the Titanic.

This Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEI) invites plans that include opportunities for multiple day experiences and overnight accommodations in the forms of both lodging and camping, as well as improved transportation and access. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The National Park Service is looking for the right partner(s) to join us and envision a new beginning for this area,â&#x20AC;? said Jen Nersesian, superintendent of Gateway National Recreation Area. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We believe that this is a wonderful opportunity to build on the growing popularity of the Rockaways and Fort Tilden.â&#x20AC;? Statues for Citizen Jetties Dear Editor: (In response to 10/5 Boyleing Points: Citizen Jetties) I liked your idea for people to bring a ‘Rock to Rockaway for a Rock-Rock-Rockaway Jetty.” Why don’t we ask Mayor de Blasio’s statue commission to send all the unwanted statues to Rockaway for our Jetty? Dear Editor: I just came from the Rockaway Park Post Office on Beach Channel Drive. I parked in their parking lot… and the lot is dirty and disgusting — maybe worth looking into. It looks like a graveyard for the rubber bands that they use to band our mail together, plus garbage and debris strewn about. Storeowners must keep their property sites swept clean or they risk a fine. I guess the Federal government doesn't have to comply. Not only is it a waste of taxpayers’ money being spent on rubber bands—these rubber bands aren't good for the environment, i.e. birds and wild life that can choke on them. ‘Brr’ing On 2018 With A Rockaway Polar Plunge By Kami-Leigh Agard

For locals, the New Year’s Day Polar Plunge is more than a crazy stunt. It’s a true Rockaway tradition spanning for more than five decades, where hundreds gather together on the beach in their skivvies, and wait for the countdown to sprint into the chilly Atlantic Ocean. Frigid temperatures, and snow, ice and sleet could be on the ground, but that does not deter the brave from diving in. With seven- to 70-year-olds

joining in, age is not a factor. All that is required is fortitude and the iconic Rockaway Strong spirit. According to Laura Pulkoski, her husband, Tom, has been taking the plunge for more than four decades and spearheaded the plunge that now takes place on Beach 119th. “Tom started doing it in the Beach 140s over 40 years ago. Then he decided to bring it down to Beach 119th, where he and other friends dubbed it, ‘The 119th Street Dip.’ “Our son, T.J., joined in when he was only four years old. Then all his friends told their friends, and it just grew every year. You see people coming down from their apartment buildings dressed in their bathrobes with just their swimsuits underneath. It’s an intimate community New Year’s tradition that has immensely grown to more than 150 people lining up on Beach 119th, gearing up to sprint into the ocean on the count of 10. We are not an

organized group, just generations of families and friends who show up. Now my son is 30, and has moved to California, but we are hoping to have an offshoot there doing the plunge in honor of Rockaway. Of course, California is much warmer, but ultimately it could never outshine the Rockaway spirit here!” Nothing has seemed to stop this annual tradition. Broad Channel resident, Dan Guarino, is perhaps a Johnnie (or Dannie)-come-lately to the

plunge, but after witnessing hundreds of locals coming out to the event just a mere two months after Hurricane Sandy, his heart was moved. “I had gone down to Beach 146th on the morning of New Year’s Day just after Sandy. Everything was storm-washed, and I saw these literally broken houses that looked like they were punched by a giant. I was sitting in my car, watching the dismally grey and overcast sky, and then suddenly around 11:30 a.m., all of these cars started pulling in. By the time the cars were unloaded, there were at least 300 people lining the beach, and by noon, at least half of them went into the water. As I am sitting there, waiting to take photos, former Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder appears and says to me, ‘I am here for the plunge. Do you want to go in?’ At the time, I was unprepared, and declined. Guarino said he would never forget the conversations he had with people on the beach that day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They said, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Yes, we are wiped out after the hurricane, but we felt we had to come down and represent the Rockaway Strong spirit,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? Guarino shared. Since that eye-opening New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day in 2013, Guarino said that he has been going every year to join in. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day, I cross the bridge from Broad Channel, and head to the beach to join in on the plunge. The community feeling and spirit is so strong that after the initial shock of the oceanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chill, plunging in feels like a cleansing, and opportunity to start anew together,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Looking Back at 2017 By Katie McFadden

2017 was the year for Rockaway with the boardwalk finally being finished and the ferry making its comeback, but plenty more happened in between. Here are some highlights from each issue of The Rockaway Times (RT) this year. January 5: The RT profiled Ronnie McCarthy, who still leads the Breezy Point Arts and Crafts program at 95-years-young. There was also a great recap of the New Year’s Day plunge with photos from Peter Brady and others who braved the waves. January 12: The week before, it was cold enough to freeze over Jamaica Bay. The last nuns at St. Francis de Sales Church, Sisters Paul, Patricia and Patricia, said their goodbyes as they were relocating to Rockville Center. January 19: The RT profiled John Joseph, frontman for the Cro-Mags turned Ironman, who had some tough beginnings in Rockaway. A transformer explosion near Beach 92nd Street illuminated the skies and caused alarm among residents. A local group of anti-Trump women were on their way to Washington, D.C. to protest the soon-to-be inaugurated President Trump at the Women’s March. January 26: Construction began on the ferry landing at Beach 108th, giving locals hope that word of the ferry coming back may actually be true. Calla-Head in Broad Channel was causing traffic concerns. The RT got on top of the issue and CallA-Head said they were being addressed. Liz Hanna and Pat Nash were honored at the Graybeards Dinner on January 28. Stacey Pheffer Amato was sworn in as assemblywoman on January 22. February 2: Local women were gearing up for a 13.1-mile run to raise funds for John Hudson, a young boy suffering from the life-threatening condition, Epidermolysis Bullosa. The Queens Public Transit Committee was out in full force, discussing the ramifications of the future Select Bus Service. Broad Channel’s Anna O’Connor, in remission from leukemia, won a Caring Kids Award for holding a successful toy drive for kids undergoing cancer treatments at Cohen

Children's Hospital. The Ladies of Business of Rockaway Beach formed. Residents of Beach 127th got word from the Parks Department that a flag placed at the beach wall in memory of FDNY Lt. Joe Agnello, would have to come down for baffle wall construction. Local businesses were gearing up for Super Bowl. February 9: A big case of bullying caused concern at PS 114. Trishia Bermudez was profiled for starting Perfect Piece of the Puzzle, a group to help financially-disadvantaged families get services for their special needs children. February 16: Four locals were arrested in connection with scams over Sandy-impacted homes. Charlie Braun, 13, had big dreams of going to the 2017 World YoYo Contest in Iceland. February 23: The RT announced the start of the 2nd Annual Photo Contest. Baker Tracy Obolsky announced Rockaway Beach Bakery would be going brick-and-mortar on Beach 88th Street. Black Surfing Rockaway hosted its first of many free cooking classes at local restaurants on the peninsula. News spread of a new beer garden coming to town—Liquid Bread. March 2: Well that came quick. It was time for the 42nd Annual Queens County St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Beach 59th Street Playground was getting some upgrades with funding from the city. Ocean Bliss Yoga moved to their new home at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club. The Rockaway Business Alliance began to form, representing businesses from Beach 43rd to Riis Park.

March 9: The RT recapped the St. Paddy’s Day parade, which turned out to be a cold one. Myrtle Beach, SC got a taste of Rockaway with a Far Rockaway-themed restaurant. March 16: Local musician Joe Popp was gearing up for a 48-state music tour by motorcycle. March 23: The old Tubridy’s Bar was razed to make room for the future Rockaway Beach Hotel. Two Beach 120th Street properties that were used in a Hurricane Sandy-related scam went up for auction. A fire broke out at 102-00 Shore Front Parkway. One on One Physical Therapy on Beach 116th was getting ready to open. March 30: Monika Wroblewski recalled the harrowing events of the fire that destroyed her family’s apartment at 102-00 Shore Front Parkway. A new program aiming to counteract drug overdoses by providing free Naloxone, launched in Rockaway. RAA artist Susan Hartenstein passed away on March 26. Councilman Ulrich announced that Shore Front Parkway would be repaved. April 6: The Downtown Far Rockaway revitalization project gained support from Community Board 14. On April 4, a 30ft humpback whale washed up dead on Beach 117th Street. April 13: The City announced that the ferry would be starting in May as opposed to June. Mazzone Hardware was set to open, replacing the former Brown’s Hardware store on Beach 116th. The RT won 2nd place for Best Overall Use of Social Media at the New York Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest. April 20: The RT photo contest was closed to entries, with more than 1,000 photos submitted. April 27: A walk was being held for baby Ryan Williams, who suffers from a congenital diaphragmatic hernia. May 4: Rockaway celebrated the return of the ferry on May 1. Taste of Rockaway was set for that weekend. Cashless tolling went into effect on Rockaway’s bridges on April 30. May 11: Sculptures started to appear on Shore Front Parkway as part of the extensive 14 Sculptors on the Rock exhibit. CB 14 shot down bringing metered

parking to Shore Front Parkway. May 18: Holocaust survivor Ruth Pagirsky shared her horrific story. The Marcal Group released renderings of the One Sixteen condo project coming to Beach 116th. New summer concessions were in the works for Edgemere. May 25: Beaches opened for the season and the boardwalk was finally complete. The BLVD Project, a new beer garden and public art display on Beach 108th was announced. June 1: Drone photos from Eddy Pastore showed the clear need for jetties on the beach. Free sunscreen dispensers came to the boardwalk, as well as poster-sized photos featuring RT photo contest finalists. The Beach 127th Street flag was removed. The 5th annual Rockaway/Breezy Point Irish Festival was set for the weekend. June 8: Voting began for the RT photo contest. Firefighter Peter Brady won a medal for rescuing a woman in a Brooklyn fire. The Breezy Point BayHouse finally reopened after being rebuilt from Sandy. Former RT reporter Dylan Watton announced that he’d be on Jeopardy on June 13. June 15: The RT paid tribute to local dads for Father’s Day. The ferry was proving to be a hit with boats being overcrowded. Author Jill Eisenstadt released her new novel, Swell. Senator Sanders called for safety measures at crossings in Arverne, following an accident that injured a woman and her toddlers. June 22: The RT celebrated its 3rd anniversary. Rumors of LaQuinta Hotel becoming a homeless shelter were becoming more true. Rockstock and Barrels was coming that weekend. The Beach 80th Flea Market was coming in July. June 29: Happy July 4! The Walk for the Shore Rally was held to demand jetties and beach protection. FDNY was getting ready to battle Birmingham in a boxing match featuring grudge matches with locals TJ McVeigh and Jimmy Frontera. Actor Ed Burns was in town filming a movie. Family Displaced By Fire Gets a Firehouse Christmas By Kami-Leigh Agard

Firefighters at local firehouse, Engine 266, pulled out all the stops with bells and whistles attached, to bless a family in need on Christmas morning. With a breakfast feast of sumptuous thickly sliced bacon, eggs, bagels with every fixing you could think of, and a truckload of toys and supplies stacked under a towering tree for the children, Moyette Clarke and her family could not have been happier. “After everything we’ve been through since the fire, what these firefighters have done for my family is nothing short of amazing. My husband and I are completely blown away and feel so blessed by their big-hearted act of kindness,” Clarke said. Clarke, her husband, Sheldon Greene, and their two young children were left homeless after a fire decimated their third-floor apartment on Beach 91st Street this past Labor Day on September 4. Now, more than three months later, the family is still homeless and living in

a shelter in Brooklyn. Firefighter Kevin Dolan said he first met Clarke a few months ago when she went to the firehouse to request a fire report. “After hearing her story, I told her that every year we host a family in need on Christmas, and firehouse Captain Gerry Liotta would be honored if they would be our guests. We try to do this under the radar without any fanfare or attention. Our sole goal is to spread Christmas cheer and the spirit of giving to local families in need.” Clarke said after that first encounter with Dolan, since then almost every day, he would contact the family to see how they were doing. Clarke said, “Firefighter Dolan would call or text us to see if we needed anything, like transportation, food, supplies. He and the other firefighters are a godsend for our family. “Living in the shelter with my six-month-old daughter and fouryear-old son is tough. Also both of my husband’s legs were injured in the fire, and for over a month he could not walk, and had to leave his job. That being said, I can’t

complain, because of the faith that I have. We still have life and hope for new beginnings. Many people don’t walk away from a fire and live to tell the story, much less three months later find themselves being treated to a private Christmas feast at a firehouse.” Clarke and her husband, Sheldon, said that their experience with the firefighters has inspired them both to join the FDNY. “After what we experienced with the fire and how these firemen risked their lives to save us and the other families, both my husband

100th Pct NCO Promoted Just in Time for Christmas

On Friday, December 22, just three days before Christmas, 100th Precinct Neighborhood Community Officer (NCO) Anthony Byrd found himself attending the NYPD’s promotion ceremony at NYPD headquarters (One Police Plaza), where he received his gold detective’s shield. Newly-minted Detective Byrd spoke to The Rockaway Times

about the honor. “I have been an NYPD police officer for ten years, and worked really hard for this. I first worked as an NCO when it was started in Queens South at 101st Precinct. Then two year later, I was transferred to 100th Precinct, where I currently serve in Sector Boy (covering Beach 90th to 108th Streets and Broad Channel). Now, here I am today being promoted to detective. What a wonderful gift to share with my family just in time for Christmas!” Detective Byrd said. According to Byrd, he is the only NCO at 100th Precinct that has been promoted to detective and only one of three NCOs citywide who received the promotion. The NCO “One City: Safe and Fair Everywhere” initiative was first rolled out by the NYPD as a pilot program in the spring of 2015 at Rockaway’s 100th and 101st Precincts. Appointed officers, called NCOs, who work entirely on community policing activities, have the primary assignment of building trust with the community by cultivating

face-to-face relationships, reminiscent of the days when the local cop on the beat was more like a family friend. Today, the program is up and running in 51 of the city's 77 precincts, with five more precincts scheduled to come on line in January. When fully implemented, it will put 616 NCOs on the streets. The 100th Precinct has approximately 150 officers, of which six NCOs currently are specifically assigned to three sectors. The NCOs assigned are as follows: Police Officer (PO) Andrew Taormina and PO Genaro Gabbe in Sector A (Beach 59th to Beach 90th Streets); Detective Anthony Byrd and PO Keith Richardson in Sector Boy (Beach 90th to Beach 108th Streets and Broad Channel); and PO Danielle Campo and Jonathan Mercardo in Sector Charlie (Beach 108th Street to Breezy Point), all of whom serve under NC Sergeant Julieann Stapleton. Depression It is estimated that about 14 percent of patients who visit a primary care provider are depressed, but that depression is often not diagnosed. Recently a diagnostic tool was redesigned to help primary care providers diagnose depression. That tool is called Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ9). There are nine questions listed below and four possible answers to each question. PHQ9 uses a scoring system to assess whether the patient is depressed and how severe that depression is. The scoring system is as follows: not at all – 0; several

days – 1; more than half the days – 2; and nearly every day – 3. The nine questions are: 1. Little interest or pleasure in doing things. 2. Feeling down, depressed, or hopeless. 3. Trouble falling or staying asleep, or sleeping too much. 4. Feeling tired or having little energy. 5. Poor appetite or overeating. 6. Feeling bad about yourself or that you are a failure or have let yourself or your family down. 7. Trouble concentrating on

things, such as reading the newspaper or watching television. 8. Moving or speaking so slowly that other people could have noticed? Or the opposite – being so fidgety or restless that you have been moving around a lot more than usual. 9. Thoughts that you would be better off dead or hurting yourself in some way. A score of 5-9 represents mild depressive symptoms, 10-14 moderate, 15-19 moderately severe, and 20 or more severe depressive symptoms. The advantages of a publically accessible PHQ9 include its self-report format, rapid scoring and interpretation, availability in multiple languages, suitability for remote administration (e.g. via telehealth), and sensitivity to treatment-associated change. PHQ9 does not screen for bipolar disorder, so an elevated score should prompt questions related to bipolar depression, including asking about sustained

periods of grandiosity, decreased need for sleep, or pressured sleep. PHQ9 also does not screen for anxiety, which often accompanies depression, so the examiner would need to ask additional questions related to anxiety. In addition questions regarding alcohol and/ or controlled substance use and abuse should be asked in the setting of an elevated score. Multiple depression scales exist but PHQ9 is designed to be used in the primary care setting. An elevated score will prompt the primary care provider to recommend medications to treat depression and/or the need for referral of the patient to a psychologist or a psychiatrist. Rockaway Women Making Progress Rockaway Women for Progress (RWP) held their monthly meeting on Tuesday, December 19 at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club. It was a unique event, as they hosted two special guest speakers. Ruth Altman, co-president of the Manhattan chapter of the League of Women Voters, spoke along with her colleague, Fannie Conner. The two women traveled to Rockaway from Manhattan and Brooklyn to lead a session on how to conduct voter registration drives. The League of Women Voters, which was founded in 1919, is a non-partisan group dedicated to promoting informed and active civic participation in government. Altman and Conner provided information about different ways to effectively advocate for issues directly affecting the Rockaway community. Most important, they described a

political advocacy tool that the League recently developed. “Voices” is a free app, which allows you to instantly communicate with your elected officials. The app is available for download at www.tryvoices. com To help promote education and boost participation in their political process, Rockaway Women for Progress plans on utilizing the information learned at this session to hold various voter registration drives around the peninsula. The mission of Rockaway Women for Progress is to develop and implement strategies that uphold democracy and protect human rights. Operation Kid Comfort is at it again and this time they’re collecting donations to help those affected by the tremendous wildfires in California, especially in Fallbrook and Bonsall. Many families have lost everything and the fires continue throughout the area. The Comfort Crew is hoping to show these communities that they are not alone and they have people who are willing to help. The Comfort Crew is collecting a wide array or items. This includes towels, sheets, pillows, dishes, pots/pans, glasses, personal hygiene products, electronics, toys, baby items, gift cards, tool sets, board games and more. DO EVERYTHING WITH LOVE The hush of winter is upon us. With that first early morning snow on Saturday, December 9, I felt its presence. Light flakes cascading straight down. Hush. While we are here in Rockaway because of our spectacular summer with its long days, sunshine, vegetables growing, people visiting, swimming, the hush of winter is beautiful and awesome. Not talking about the cold or the dark or any of the things most of us complain about — rather, the physical feeling of the season. Hush. Stop. Listen. Be

present. For me, it’s the beginning of a time of introspection and rest and restoration. The one “positive” that has been coming up frequently for me during this time is “Do everything with love.” Just that one sentence shifts the feelings I have to be less hurried, present, happy to be doing, grateful I am able to do the task at hand. This really is a shift. A softening into leading from the heart. If we cannot “do” something with love, we might as well not do it at all. This reminds me of some learnings

which I weave in here and there in my yoga teaching. Yogic traditions recognize that the heart is the seat of individual consciousness, the center of life. We tend to focus on the brain as the driving force, so what is this all about? Practicing heart-focus, heart-focused breathing and heart feeling brings a sense of calmness, openness and overall well-being. Sitting quietly, calling attention to the center of the chest, focusing on that place, then breathing deeper keeping the focus in the center, then feeling an emotion such as love for someone or remembering a peaceful moment, simply makes us feel good. It turns out it is not only in an emotional way, but also in physical ways, one is bringing the heart rate to an even place. We, as thinking humans, need to understand and know why. There is scientific study. Did you know that the heart produces a hormone that reduces the release of the stress hormone? Did you know that the

brain and heart have an ongoing “communication” and that the heart — because it has its own nervous system — sends a lot of information to the brain? Did you know that as an “electric” organ, the heart radiates a field of energy throughout our whole bodies and even outside of our bodies? This is why in the yogic traditions, we learn that by creating an intention of love or peace in the world or compassion or non-judgment or kindness, we are actually sending it forth from our hearts into the world through the energy in the heart. So maybe start with you. Practice the heart-focus, heart-focused breathing and then heart feeling, focusing on a positive emotion. See how it makes you feel. Then, by all means, send out all you can — kindness, compassion, love, peace and joy! (Thoughts regarding “heart intelligence” adapted from HeartMath.) Best to all in the New Year for happiness, freedom, gratitude, peace and love.

Have you ever wondered what people do all day at their jobs? I have, and that’s the basis for this column, Rockaway at Work. I had never been to an Open House, and was eager to see what happens there. I watched as Lisa Jackson greeted each cli-

ent, and gave him or her an information sheet with details about the home. Jackson created a warm rapport with all of her visitors, and upon leaving, she asked them to sign a guest sheet with their name, their contact information, and how they heard about the Open House. This was done so that she could follow up with every guest and provide feedback to the homeowner. This particular house had not been staged, but if a home is vacant, Jackson will often bring in furniture and decora-

tive objects to show how great a home can look. I can’t wait until her next Open House to see how she stages it. Jackson’s day begins in her office on Beach 129th Street. She will check her emails, and go through any folders that her team of agents have left on her desk, informing her of new listings or homes that have closed or gone into contract. The listing book, the company website, and the display window are all updated to keep abreast of the changes. The busiest office day is Wednesday, as this is the deadline for her newspaper ad. It is very important to Jackson that the information in both the ad and the website www.rockaprop.com is accurate and up to date. Jackson is very dedicated, and she strives to always be available when a buyer or seller calls with a question or problem. She believes that “in order to be successful, you have to give good customer service,” and to that end, she frequently works long hours and both evenings and weekends. I had no idea what the difference was between a real estate agent, a real estate broker and an associate broker, but Jackson filled me in. A prospective real estate agent goes to school, takes a test, and gets a license. But they still must work for a licensed broker for a minimum of two years. After two years, and a number of sales, they can go back to school for their broker’s license. After passing a state test, they can become an independent broker, or work for someone else’s agency as an associate broker. Jackson is a licensed broker and has been in business since December 2010. She says, “I like to be hands-on and involved with many of the real estate transactions of my agents. I am extreme-

ly fortunate to have a team of six dedicated agents, all of whom live in the neighborhood. Nia Casilla, Barbara Ferguson, Melissa Carrington, Ariana David, Colleen Brady and Jenny Dantone bring a wealth of experience and indepth knowledge to the Rockaway real estate market. Jackson explained to me that giving a broker an exclusive, is in the seller’s best interests. Jackson, and all of her agents, are members of both the Long Island Multiple Listing Service and the Brooklyn Board of Realtors, which allows all of their exclusive listings to be on the websites Realtor.com., Zillow and Trulia. The Multiple List has strict rules about updating information and giving accurate facts about a property with fines imposed on realtors who don’t comply. If your home is not an exclusive listing, it will not be on any of these websites. One Guilt-Free New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Resolution from a Special-Needs Mom As we bid adieu to 2017, many of us â&#x20AC;&#x201D; whether you are a parent of a special-needs or â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;neurotypicalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; child â&#x20AC;&#x201D; are walking around feeling bloated. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean bloated with all the pies, turkey and ham from the holiday feasting. I mean swollen like a sponge literally dripping with all the guilt, defeat and fear absorbed from the last 365 days. Well folks, for 2018, before the ball drops heralding the new year, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s make a pledge to vigorously wring and shake ourselves dry, and prepare to only absorb all that is mindfully beneficial in the next 365 days and beyond, GUILT-FREE. How? Be selfish. No you didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t read incorrectly, yes, I stated BE SELFISH. Wait, humor me before you turn the page. You may be thinking that selfishness is wrong. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not saying for you to be self-absorbed or uncaring, as a parent, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s impossible! I am a mom of a nine-year-old girl on the autism spectrum, and if someone a few months ago suggested that I should be selfish, I would think they were crazy. However, this past year, I literally ran myself ragged, found myself in a few health crises, many days seething with anger, resentment, guilt and of course the â&#x20AC;&#x153;why meâ&#x20AC;? self-pity parties. I kept sinking in this pit of quicksand, literally struggling to just keep my head up. Did it help my daugh-

ter? No. How many days was I forced to be away from her because I neglected myself, not to mention the stress wreaked on my family and friends? Too many to count. Remember the instructions about the oxygen mask when you are on an airplane? â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you are traveling with a child or someone who requires assistance, secure your own mask first, and then assist the other person.â&#x20AC;? The principle of this expands to life in general. If I'm going to be able to help my daughter secure her oxygen mask, I need to first secure my own. What might look like an act of self-regard is actually the needed condition for being able to care for the other. Meaning before you can take care of ANYONE, you must tend to YOUR needs first. And you can achieve this by laying the groundwork for a well-balanced healthy lifestyle by: 1-Scheduling (and not canceling) your regular medical check-ups. 2-Exercising. According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), besides controlling your weight, moderate-intensity aerobic activity can also reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, your risk for type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome, your risk of some cancers, strengthen your bones and muscles, improve your mental health and mood, improve your ability to do daily

However, oftentimes when close friends or family would offer to take her out, I would decline and casually say, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thanks, but we really have a lot to do today.â&#x20AC;? When admittedly inside, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m kicking myself. If you totally trust the person, use that time to clean up the house, take a nap, get your hair done, curl up on the couch with a dusty book you've been meaning to read, whatever. 5-Stop comparing yourself, and accept that you are the best parent your child can ever have. Listen, no oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s perfect. I can give you an earful of mistakes I made on my nine-year journey with my daughter that will have you in stitches. The important thing is to make sure to keep spiritually, physically and mentally healthy to share a rich life of hope, love and of course, laughter with your loved ones. Disposing Your Christmas Tree By Katie McFadden

Christmas has come and gone and you might be wondering, what the heck do I do with the Christmas tree? If you have a real tree that you need to get rid of, now’s your chance. Starting Tuesday, January 2, the Department of Sanitation will be picking up trees left on the curb to be composted. The trees are chipped, mixed with leaves, and recycled into rich compost for NYC's parks, institutions, and community gardens. Be sure to remove all lights, ornaments, stands, and plastic bags from your tree; trees that still have these items attached will be collected as garbage. Do not bag your tree. Trees will be collected from curbs for composting through January 13. If you discard your tree after this date, it will be collected as regular garbage. Another option is to par-

ticipate in the Parks Department’s MulchFest, in which trees are chipped and participants can take home a bag of mulch to use in personal gardens. It will take place on Saturday, January 6 and Sunday, January 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at nearly 80 locations across the city. Unfortunately, the closest chipping sites are Marine Park (East 33rd and Avenue U) and Brookville Park near Rosedale. There are also designated drop-off sites where trees will be picked up for MulchFest. The local drop-off locations are Beach 94th Street and Shore Front Parkway and the parking lot at Beach 11th Street and Seagirt Boulevard. You can drop off your tree starting December 31. We all have resolutions for the new year that usually include keeping our homes cleaner and more organized. I figured for the last week of the year I’d give you some simple tips to help you keep all those New Year’s resolutions. Most of the best cleaning agents available are already in your home such as baking soda, toothpaste, and lemons. With a few simple hacks, you can save time and money. 1. Heating tile and the tub just 10 degrees above the normal air temperature "doubles the effectiveness" of alkaline cleansers. Alkaline cleansers include “Bon Ami” and “Simple Green.” Simple baking soda works as well. Fill your tub with the hottest water possible and let it sit for ten minutes. Same thing with your wall tiles. Spray hot water on the walls before applying your normal cleaning product. Then proceed with your normal cleaning routines. 2. For all of us with stainless steel appliances, the simplest way to clean and polish them is with oil and vinegar. Mix half vinegar and half water into a spray bottle and clean with the grain. Then take a cloth or paper towel with a dab of olive

oil and polish in the same direction as the grain. 3. Any old oil stains on your cement can usually be remedied with Coca-Cola (Yes, this actually works). 4. Grout in bathrooms is usually the hardest and often most stubborn cleaning task in your home. It’s a job that everyone laments but can really be taken care of with three ingredients. Bleach, baking soda and a stiff bristle brush is all you will ever need. While we’re on the subject of baking soda, it can be used to clean and deodorize numerous things such as mattresses, sneakers, and cutting boards. It is probably the single most valuable item to keep in your home to keep it clean and fresh. 5. Remove ink marks from your leather products (car seat, purse or even jacket) by rubbing a pea-sized toothpaste dot on it. After it dries, clean it with a damp cloth. Bugalou Music Presents John Sebastian Get ready for another great night of music. John Sebastian is coming to town as part of the Bugalou Music series on January 5. John Sebastian began his musical career as a mainstay of the Greenwich Village folk music circuit that also nurtured Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Peter, Paul & Mary, and many others in the early 1960's. He came together with future partner Zal Yanovsky in the Mugwumps, along with Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty, who would go on to form The Mamas and the Papas. Watching The Beatles on Ed Sullivan together in Cass' apartment pointed them all in a new direction, and The Lovin' Spoonful was born shortly after. Along with The Byrds, Simon and Garfunkel, The Mamas and the Papas, and

others, they launched a new hybrid that was dubbed Folk Rock. Do You Believe in Magic became the first of seven Top 10 hits for The Lovin' Spoonful between 1965 and 1967, and their music can rightly be stated to characterize the sound of that era: Daydream, You Didn't Have to Be So Nice, Nashville Cats, Rain on the Roof, Six O'Clock, Younger Girl, Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind, Darling Be Home Soon, and Summer in the City. The Spoonful had a spirit and optimism that made you feel good. When pop music began to turn 'heavy,' their days became numbered. John Sebastian would then go on to a solo career as one of the first of the singer-songwriters who rose to promi-

nence in the late sixties and early seventies. He went to Woodstock just to hang out, and was pressed into performing because of problems created by the famous rainstorm that descended on Yasgur's Farm. Sebastian gave an iconic performance that came to epitomize the Woodstock Generation, and was featured in the movie, while many acts who were actually booked did not make the cut. The mid-seventies would see him reappear in the public consciousness with Welcome Back, which was written as the theme song for the classic TV comedy Welcome Back Kotter. Since then, he has continued to record and perform, keeping alive what has now been alternately labeled as Roots Music and Americana.

Sebastian was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2008. He is truly an American musical treasure. Bugalou and concert sponsor, TGAThe Great American are proud to bring him to Rockaway on Friday,

October 19: Cashless tolling was turning out to be a nightmare for several residents hit with thousands of dollars in fines. Brown composting bins were delivered around the peninsula. Mayor de Blasio announced 3K (free public school for three-year-olds) for all would be coming to Rockaway and Broad Channel schools. October 26: The RT marked the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, showing Rockaway fought hard to come back, but the fight continues with a need for more coastal protection. Rockaway also got ready for Halloween. November 2: Election season was upon us with the big local race between Councilman Eric Ulrich and Mike Scala. The Mayor came to Rockaway to announce resiliency projects that were getting funding from money left over from the boardwalk project. Another rally was held

to send a message to the Army Corps that more coastal protection is needed. A stabbing occurred at a Dayton building, resulting in a cop shooting the perp. Locals were gearing up to run the NYC Marathon. November 9: A Cold War veteran plane took off from Floyd Bennett Field after 15 years. The RT looked in to the long-abandoned Chai Home. Eric Ulrich won re-election. So did de Blasio. The old Playland Motel sold for $2.3 million. The Rockaway Theatre Company’s Rockaway Café returned one last time. Cracks in a boardwalk ramp at Beach 92nd Street due to rising tides proved that the peninsula is in need of protection. A meeting was held to discuss a new natural gas pipeline project proposed by Williams. Drama arose at Dayton Beach Park as the Department of Housing Preservation and Development threw out a board vote due to suspected voter fraud. Rockaway Beach continued to flourish with the addition of new Caribbean, Peruvian and Japanese restaurants, and the return of Whit’s End.

The Rockaway Times November 30: A Rockaway-bound ferry got stranded just after taking off from Pier 11. December 7: Mayor Bill de Blasio came uptown for a Town Hall where he answered residents’ questions. A devastating fire on December 3 left several families homeless and killed 12-year-old TJ Curley. Broad Channel was hit with a series of car break-ins and thefts. December 14: A minke whale washed up dead by the Silver Gull Beach Club. Rockaway rang in the holidays with tree lightings, menorah lightings and more. December 21: The Santa 5K was another holiday hit! Frustrations increased with continuous closures of the Marine Parkway Bridge. A huge, new cellphone tower popped up on Rockaway Beach Drive so the Rockaway Beach Hotel could begin construction. The Department of Education announced that two local schools, MS53 and PS42, are slated to close at the end of the school year. We can't wait to see what's in store for 2018!
