Plunge for the New Year on January 1

It’s that time of year again when some brave (and maybe crazy) souls jump into the Atlantic Ocean to ring in the New Year. The annual New Year’s Day polar plunge takes place in various locations at noon on January 1. While there is no official plunge event, those brave enough to join along will find large groups participating at Beach 119th, Beach 127th and Beach 146th Streets. Though some years have been downright frigid, plungers will get a slight break on Tuesday. As we go to press, the forecast calls for a 48-degree day, with ocean temps just a few degrees colder, at around 45 degrees. If you’ll be the one standing on the beach, taking photos, be sure to share with us by emailing mail@rockawaytimes.com. We’ll publish some in next week’s paper.

Christmas has come and gone and you might be wondering, what the heck do I do with the Christmas tree? If you have a real tree that you need to get rid of, the city is here to help. Starting Wednesday, January 2, the Department of Sanitation will be picking up trees left on the curb to be composted. The trees are chipped, mixed with leaves, and recycled into rich compost for NYC’s parks, institutions, and community gardens. Be sure to remove all lights, ornaments, stands, and plastic bags from your tree; trees that still have these items attached will be collected as garbage. Do not bag your tree. Trees will be collected from curbs for composting through January 12. If you discard your tree after this date, it will be collected as regular garbage. Another option is to participate in the Parks Department’s

MulchFest, in which trees are chipped and participants can take home a bag of mulch to use in personal gardens. It will take place on Saturday, January 12 and Sunday, January 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at nearly 80 locations across the city. Unfortunately, the closest chipping sites are Marine Park (East 33rd and Avenue U) and Brookville Park near Rosedale. There are also designated drop-off sites where trees will be picked up for MulchFest. The local drop-off locations are Beach 94th Street and Shore Front Parkway and the parking lot at Beach 11th Street and Seagirt Boulevard. You can drop off your tree starting December 31. Finite Wisdom When I have a choice between doing something and procrastinating, I act decisively by putting off the decision. I was going to do what every columnist does this week, do a top 10 ten list from the year about to slip away or rerun a column because you’ve gotta fill up space somehow, but then I came across a quotable quote: You know you’re on the right track when you become

uninterested in looking back. Deep. But it kinda put the kibosh on a year in review. I don’t want to look back and get off track. You spend too much time on memory lane and you never get on the road to success. Move over Ben Franklin, that’s not bad. And it’s mine, just came up with it— though I don’t think that’ll get me into Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations. Not that it would matter. You can’t really com-

pete with the greatest quotemeister of them all, Anonymous. He or she is the one who said: Write a wise saying and your name will live forever. If you say something profound and unique, Anonymous is eventually going to get credit or maybe Mark Twain or Yogi Berra. Some people have a knack for storing nuggets of wisdom and can drop one on you whenever the occasion calls for it. You feel bad because your kid’s in a funk over a test or some game and somebody says, you’re only as happy as your unhappiest child. True, you think. How come I never heard that before? These wisdom droppers don’t use obvious clichés— which can be so friggin’ annoying. When somebody says, early bird catches the worm, it’s really not going to motivate you to get up earlier. In fact, it makes you want to crawl under the covers and stay there. If the son who will remain nameless reads this, he will scream, you

say that early bird crap all the time! Which is not true—though I might tell him the only job you start at top is digging a hole. Or that 80 percent of life is showing up. Another Anonymous gem is, if you think you’re the smartest person in the room, leave the room. That’s a good one and I just realized that it really validates the Irish goodbye. To be old and wise, you must first be young and stupid. Yes, but so many just accomplish three out of those four. Although not a wisdom nugget, I do like the crack that a bore is someone who, when you ask him how he is, tells you. As I was doing research (in other words, looking for stuff I could cut and paste), I came across a call to arms: Bad spellers of the world untie! I sure hope that doesn’t get fixed in proofreading… And that’s a wrap on 2018. And one thing’s for sure, you’re no wiser for reading Boyleing Points. Happy New Year.

Looking Back at 2018 Boy, that year flew! But plenty happened. Here are some highlights from each issue of The Rockaway Times (RT) this year. January 4: Winter proved to be a new challenge for the new ferry service as ice took over the bay. More than two dozen people had to be rescued from a Manhattan-bound ferry that got stuck on a sandbar off of Breezy Point. Bayswater brothers Nochum and Shmulie Russell warmed hearts by bringing blankets and supplies to homeless people across the city. Residents of the NYCHA Redfern Houses were dealing without heat. January 11: Cops helped chip away ice from the front door of an Arverne senior that was stuck in her home. The RT exposed airport parking biz, Park it JFK for illegally using a piece of cityowned land on Beach 80th Street. Winter storm Grayson caused a Belle Harbor home under construction to collapse and led to severe postal service delays. January 18: Firefighters and cops worked to rescue residents from a fire at 8800 Shore Front Parkway. One senior, Ethel Davis, died as a result of the blaze. A Far Rockaway street was renamed for the late community activist, Manny Fiallo, who died in May 2017. January 25: A seal paid Riis Park a visit. John Edwards and the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League were honored at the Graybeards dinner/ dance. Local pols put pressure on the post office as postal problems grew. February 1: Football star and Arverne By The Sea resident, Christian Izien, received a football scholarship to Rutgers University. Locals geared up to take the plunge for Cystic Fibrosis. De Blasio kept his promise of meeting with the Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to urge them to speed up their beach protection study. February 8: Local teen Rosalyn Lim-de Castro was gearing up to make the move to the Phillipines to train with their Olympic hockey team. Local, Christine Banker, released her first book, “We All Have a God Light.� February 15: The RT launched its 3rd annual photo contest. A humpback whale washed up

dead near Breezy Point. Senator Schumer reprogrammed $730 million to be used by the Army Corps for resiliency projects. Locals celebrated at the Poseidon’s Prom fundraiser. February 22: The New York Court of Appeals ruled that LIPA and National Grid were not immune from a lawsuit charging them for failing to turn off the power to the peninsula prior to Hurricane Sandy, allowing the lawsuit to move forward. Local resident La-Shonda Rice penned a children’s book. New AOH Division, Division 4, formed in honor of firefighter Kevin Dowdell. March 1: Locals were getting ready for Rockaway’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Longtime PS/MS 114 teacher, Mrs. Joan Diehl, and the Women’s Industrial Service League, Inc., were featured. March 8: The National Park Service signed a letter of intent with the folks from Riis Park Beach Bazaar to take over the long underutilized Bathhouse. The RT told the story of how Sandy united a family and a CT bagpipe band that now marches in Rockaway’s parade. P.S./M.S. 42 and M.S. 53 won their fight to stay open. Permits are filed to transform the Far Rockaway Shopping Center into a spot for new housing, retail space and more. March 15: Rachel Sito developed the Everything Rockaway app. Local students participated in a national school walkout against gun violence in wake of the Parkland, Fl. shooting. Former New York Dolls rocker, Steve Conte, penned a song about Rockaway, “Gimme, Gimme Rockaway.� An armed robber targeted Carvel, getting away with $400. Cynthia Nixon came to town to talk climate change during her gubernatorial campaign. May 3: NYC Ferry celebrated its first anniversary. Local football star Folorunso Fatukasi was drafted by the NY Jets. Putting Down the Scissors After 44 Years By Katie McFadden

About 44 years ago, a young Sal Araimo came to Rockaway looking for a summer job at a salon. Now he’ll be starting the new year looking toward something new—retirement. The popular hairstylist at Strands is cutting the ends of a long, successful career. At around 17 years old, Araimo, who was living in Ozone Park at the time, took his chances at a summer gig in Rockaway. “My aunt was friendly with a guy named Adolf who had a salon on Beach 116th Street. She said, 'He's looking for haircutters as his son wanted the front of the shop to be unisex. I was working for someone in Howard Beach and I told him about the opportunity, and he said go for it. I got the job. That was 44 years ago,” Araimo said. Unlike some kids that went off to college, Araimo found himself on a different path. “I didn’t want to go to college, so I went to beauty school because a few friends were going. I just did it to waste time,” Araimo said. However that time wasted turned out to be time well spent, as Araimo has spent his entire career behind the chair, with scissors in hand, beautifying clients and serving as their unofficial therapist. Following a roughly two-year stint as an assistant at Adolf’s, Araimo wound up jumping around from different salons around Rockaway, including one he worked at for his former sister-in-law, followed by a seven-year stint working for Gary on Beach Channel Drive. After gaining enough experience, Araimo decided to work for himself. He went on to open his own shop—Salon Avanti— on Beach Channel Drive. “My favorite memory of my career was the day I was able to open up Salon Avanti since I owned it myself,” he said. Araimo says the business was a success, however, after going through a messy divorce, he was forced to give up the business. Araimo resumed working for other salons and wound up working with Diane Liello and Gerri Stanksy. The trio

was considering opening their own spot when they got word of a store that would soon be available. “I spoke to the landlord and we made a handshake deal and we got the store,” Araimo said. That store, located at Beach 115th Street and Beach Channel Drive, would become the home of Strands, which opened on April 1, 2004. “It was a great place to work,” Araimo said of the original salon. Then Sandy came. Sandy threw everyone at Strands for a loop and coming back wasn’t easy. “W weren’t being helped by anybody financially,” Araimo said. The shakeup made Araimo realize that he wanted to step back from the business aspect of the salon. “I decided it was best for me not to go back into business with the ladies. They were younger and

I knew they could handle it on their own,” Araimo said, however that wasn’t the end of his stint at Strands. After Liello and Stansky reopened the new location at 104-6 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, Araimo rented a chair from them to continue his work and serve his clients. For Araimo, his time with Strands over the last 14 years has been meaningful and a highlight of his career. In 2005, just one year after Strands opened, the salon was recognized by the Rockaway Chamber of Commerce as Business of the Year. “That was a wonderful honor,” Araimo said. The other major highlight? Making his clients feel good. “The other thing that has meant a lot to me is giving someone a haircut that’s fabulous and she tells me she gets compliments wherever she goes, it

makes me realize, ‘wow, I did that.’” Now on the verge of retirement, Araimo says it’s those longtime clients that he’ll miss most. “I’m going to miss the people. I’ve developed quite a relationship with them. They’re in mourning knowing I’m retiring. They tell me, 'Can't you come back on weekends or once a month?’ They’re happy for me but sad for them because they’re going to miss the relationship I formed with them, and not to mention their therapy sessions. It’s a lot more than cutting hair,” Araimo said of his job. Although parting is bittersweet, Araimo says the time is right after a long, rewarding career. “It’s best to go out on a high note. I’m happy I did this. My clients have been wonderful. Many have welcomed me into their homes and as part of their family, and I’ve had the honor of going to some weddings and even Bat Mitzvahs. It’s been a wonderful career,” he said. New Year’s Eve will be Araimo’s final day at Strands and he’s looking forward to celebrating retirement in the New Year. “It feels great to retire. I’m looking forward to it,” he said. And he’s not just retiring from the hair salon, but Rockaway, where he’s lived for the past 30 years. “I moved here because I loved the beach and I always wanted to live here. I’ll always have the sand in my toes,” he said, however starting January 9, he’ll have the sands of a different beach in his toes. Hoping to escape the cold, Araimo is moving to Delray Beach, Fl. However, he says he won’t be too far from home. “Half of Rockaway is there. I went down there and I had a Rockaway Times t-shirt on and someone passes me and says, ‘I’m on Rockaway time too,” he said. Araimo says he’s not sure if he’ll pick up the scissors again, but he does have some retirement plans. “I’m going to take some courses, try to write a book, and travel,” he said. And after many years of standing for several hours at work, he says, “I’m looking forward to sitting in a beach chair.”

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2018 In 2018, we had two 10-15foot waves that created sewer hazards for residential homes. Under Build it Back guidelines, most homes have been raised one floor in height. I just saw an image available online of a rendering of new firehouse on the old HSBC Bank Property. The entrance has two doors on Beach Channel Drive, near 117th Street. Maybe it should be on top of a new parking garage that is 2-4-6 floors high. The firefighters would have real parking spaces, and not have to worry about parking meters every day. One ramp to go to the top floor like Kings Plaza has for Burlington shopping customers? The beach block area still has vacant land locations, and the slope of the street helps water drain downhill, and still floods at high tide on Beach Channel Drive on 120th Street, and other locations near the Rockaway Times’ offices. Local Movers & Shakers Review 2018 & Express Hopes for 2019 By Kami-Leigh Agard

Rockaway is a little town that could, with movers and shakers, who behind the scenes, dedicatedly work hard on getting what their beloved waterside communities need. In this three-part series, The Rockaway Times dives into reviews of 2018 from local civic associations, nonprofits and businesses, and what their hopes are for 2019. In this first installment, we interviewed civic leaders. From 2018’s ongoing battle for beach protection, Downtown Far Rockaway’s Revitalization Plan, Build It Back, restoration projects in Jamaica Bay, and more — here’s what they had to say. Born-and-raised in Rockaway, John Cori, president of the Rockaway Beach Civic Association (RBCA) and longtime Community Board 14 (CB14) board member, along with locals, Eddy Pastore, Hank Iori, Noreen Eliis, (and many others), has been one of the most vocal advocates for what the

peninsula direly needs when it comes to storm protection. Cori has organized rallies and protests, not just in Rockaway, but at City Hall, and the fight is ongoing. Cori said 2018 was a mixed bag, and a lot still needs to be done. “In 2018, we saw design plans for various parks the peninsula lost during Sandy, and what further infrastructure needs to be placed to improve the overall recreational and safety experience for both locals and visitors. However, we’re not happy. For example, the Department of Transportation (DOT) unexpectedly changed the direction of traffic on Beach 91st Street, when we specifically demanded changes for the bike

path loop on Beach 92nd Street and Beach Channel Drive. To our surprise, DOT has already packed up their construction equipment. We were expecting changes on 95th Street and the Freeway. Work is not done, and we’re definitely not going to lay back. Also, regarding the old courthouse, in a recent meeting with CB14’s Economic Development Committee, after months of confusion, initially thinking the historic building was going to be used as a medical facility, now we shockingly heard that the first floor is going to be used as a childcare center. Who approved this, and when?” Cori exclaimed. As far as future beach protection goes, Cori hopes something good is in store for 2019. “In late November, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato informed us there’s a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the Army Corps of Engineers to place more sand to help with the erosion and prevent beach closings. However, we’re still waiting for a confir-

mation as to when this is going to happen. RBCA will be under Army Corps’ skin to make sure this is signed, sealed and delivered, but again, it’s the waiting game. We’ll keep fighting the fight, but know sand is just a drop in the bucket for what the peninsula truly needs to protect us from another catastrophe like Sandy.” On the east end of the peninsula, the Bayswater Civic Association (BCA) has been carefully advocating against what they deem as not being beneficial to the community. While some laud the Downtown Far Rockaway Revitalization plan as a godsend, many like BCA board member Eugene Falik dub the revitalization as a “destruction.” Falik said, “I don’t believe this plan is going to revitalize anything. We spoke up and our concerns were ignored,” Falik said. “Let’s see what 2019 reaps. With this plan already hitting the ground running, everyone will see the reality,” he grimly stated. The Heart of Rockaway (THOR), which represents Arverne residents from Beach 73rd to 81st Streets, is relatively new, but the civic has made colossal strides in improving the safety of the eight-block stretch. After a woman was struck by a car and killed in front of the YMCA, THOR held street protests with religious and community leaders, local pols, and at a town hall meeting, they implored the mayor to help. Edwin Williams, an inaugural THOR vice president, stood with his two children and local residents, to make sure traffic safety measures were put in place. “Our community’s children wait on

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2018 this intersection for their school bus. We all saw how unsafe, not only this intersection was, but also Beach Front Road. Thankfully, DOT put speed bumps on Beach Front Road from Beach 60th to beach 73rd; and at the intersection of Beach 73rd and RBB. Williams says THOR’s work isn’t done. THOR is also fighting to get a traffic median placed between Beach 81st and 73rd Streets, where there are two schools in the area, P.S. 183 and St. Rose. “I know with passionate advocacy, we can make it happen.” Williams said. According to Williams, for 2019, THOR plans to continue their drive to help impoverished families during especially hard times like the holidays. “We are going to continue working on keeping our community safe, and helping those less unfortunate,” Williams said. Across the Cross Bay Bridge, the Broad Channel Civic Association (BCCA) and the Jamaica Bay Eco Watchers have also relentlessly advocated for folks to return to their homes, and restoration of Jamaica Bay’s pre-

cious marshlands. Dan Mundy, BCCA president and founder of the Ecowatchers said, “It took hundreds of phone calls and emails to see work done. People needed to return to their homes, streets needed to be raised, and our dream, Sunset Cove needed to be made a reality. We’re elated to see over 230 homes completed with Build it Back (BiB). Unfortunately, the street-raising project was put on hold due to BiB construction. However, with the help of the Queens Borough President’s Office and local pols, the street-raising project for West 11th, 12th and 13th Roads are back in construction. We expect most of the work to be done by June 2019, which will be a huge plus for the town, especially with tidal flooding. On the bayside with the Ecowatchers, Mundy said after 10 years of work, 2018 saw the start of Sunset Cove, a 14-acre restoration wetland project, that will not only restore critical tidal wetlands in the Bay; but will also boast a boardwalk with full dock. Mundy said, “This

past fall, seeing the bulldozers down there and the site being cleared, was very exciting. This is the biggest ongoing project to protect the habitats and overall health of the Bay.” Mundy said one key point for 2019 is monitoring a critical piece of legislation, the Water Resource Development Act. “Though it was approved and made into law, the language of the bill was problematic. With $117M committed to the project, it became a question of who would have to foot the bill. We never expected the National Park Service to be totally held accountable, and hope with help of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and other local pols, this critical piece will be rectified to make sure the Army Corps accepts the legislation,” he said. As for Cori, his wish for 2019 is that more people get involved in their local civic association. “Whether you’re a resident or business owner, we are all stakeholders. Instead of complaining, join us in making Rockaway more resilient in 2019,” he said.

On the wall to the left there is a massive black-and-white airbrush portrait of Elvis Presley, part of a series he did which includes Marlon Brando and Jay-Z. Elevated next to the large underwater-themed vessel, there is a half-finished Chevy Corvette, which Cassatto is still working on after it was totaled by Sandy’s floods. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2018 Although airbrushing is his specialty, Cassatto has dabbled in several different forms of art including stone carving, a “Primitive art form,” as he describes it, but one he dove into nevertheless. One such piece features two sculptures of a lion, and a lioness with her cubs, which he was inspired to create because of the size of the slab he had to work with, and his astrological sign as a Leo. Last week, it was the underwater-themed boat called, “Fish Fountain,” that was the main attraction. A couple that is friendly with Cassatto stopped by to admire the piece before it left his studio on Wednesday, December 19. “It’s unreal, unbelievable,” Michael Koullias said, adding that the fishthemes brought him back to when his father taught him how to fish back in his home country of Greece. Although the freshly repainted boat will now make its way back to sea, Cassatto says he continues to work on paintings

every day, “I just enjoy the art, whatever the art is, I just work at it until I get what I want to achieve.” If you’d like to see more of

2018 was an eventful year for Rockaway’s autism community. Together, we joined forces to build awareness and provide avenues for our community to really be sewn into Rockaway’s beautiful fabric. From events with the FDNY Foundation, the 100th Precinct, a Dance Out Under The Stars for Autism and a Rock Out for Autism at Caracas concession — the greater half of the year was amazing. Then we teamed up The Best Dressed Man in Rockaway aka Owen Loof and the Knights of Columbus to host a memorable holiday gathering. Though, I’m quite elated at what we have accomplished in the last year, greedily, I am looking forward to seeing what fruitful opportunities we can create for our loved ones with autism. From dreams of job/apprenticeship placement programs, more

Hope for the New Year recreational activities, and more sharing of our realities as caregivers, I am bursting with wishes. However, there’s an old time Scottish saying that my granny used to repeatedly say to me as a child: "If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.� While we certainly aren’t beggars, I believe that our community, united, are horses ready to fly with the wind and gallop for what our loved ones with autism need to survive and soar. So here’s Rockaway Beach Autism Families’ (RBAF) wish list for 2019: 1 - Local business owners, give our loved ones with autism a chance to prove their talents and desire to productively work. Many of our children are over 18, graduated from high school, in day programs, some even transportation trained, but at a stalemate when it comes to opportunities for work. Whether you own a boutique, bakery, gym, restaurant, deli, nonprofit, laundry mat— you would be amazed by their eye for detail

and organization. It’s not going to happen overnight, but let’s make it happen. 2 - Try to understand what we as caregivers are trying to maintain — peace and normalcy. Not everyone, who sees a child throwing a tantrum or fixating on a particular sound or sight, is going to think, “Hmm, that person must be autistic.� However, instead of criticizing the parent, take time to delicately stop, look and listen. Our autistic folk are more sensitive than you think, which I believe makes them more intuitive to what’s going on around them. Also, if you see a parent in a public place shrieking desperately for their child, and running around frantically, instead of denouncing them as a bad parent, offer to help. 3 — Stop labeling. Just because a person has been diagnosed with autism, does not mean they are disabled, they are just different. Don’t be afraid to invite them into your home for a party, gathering or playdate. Autism is

NOT contagious; (even though at times, I wish I could ‘catch’ my daughter’s common sense and shrewd sensibility. She does not talk, but trust me, she knows more about her surroundings and people, than me). So folks, Happy New Year. Together, as a community, we can truly put Rockaway on the map as a renaissance, not just for new restaurants and homes, but as a place where we tap into an unknown, but precious resource, our autistic dwellers. The MS-13 Gang has allegedly spilled over into Far Rockaway and are supposedly connected to a recent murder of a 23-yearold Far Rockaway man. On December 16, the body of Ian Cruz was found in Bayswater State Point Park. Cruz, who had been shot multiple times in the head, was found wearing nothing but underwear and socks. According to a New York Post report, a 14-year-old girl allegedly messaged Cruz online and promised to have sex with him. She lured him to the State Park, where he was murdered. Surveillance video led police to the suspects who later raided their Far Rockaway home. Five people were arrested in connection to Cruz’s death, including the 14-yearold girl and her brother, a 15-year-old. The young teens, along with 18-year-old Carlos Guerra and 22-year-old Yonathan Sanchez, were charged with second-degree murder

and criminal possession of a weapon, according to a report by Newsweek. They were all being held without bail. Another 18-year-old, Elmer Guttierez, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon. He was being held with a bail of $500,000. Police also recovered a .22-caliber revolver and more than 900 rounds of ammunition. Investigators believe the suspects are connected to the notorious MS-13 gang. They also believe they’re connected to another murder of a Far Rockaway teen. On December 18, the 17-year-old Harold Sermeno, also of Far Rockaway, was found shot to death outside of Five Towns Community Center. It is believed he was also lured there. The motivation behind the killings is not known. MS-13 has been active around Long Island and some parts of Queens since about 2010.

Lex Grey to Kick Off the Bugalou New Year The next Bugalou concert is on Saturday January 5, 7 p.m., at St. Camillus Academy Auditorium with Lex Grey and the Urban Pioneers and guests, 3 Sheets to the Wind. It will be a fun way to start off the New Year and and it is being billed as Bugalou's Winter Dance Party. The idea is to keep the same vibe there was at the previous show, so wear your dancing shoes. Bugalou has now also partnered with Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA) to benefit the fund to rebuild the roof of their gallery and performance space at Ft. Tilden Building T-7. RAA is a critical community resource, and their space at T-7 serves not only adult music and art lovers, but is integral to the operation of Camp KidsmArt and all their KidsmArt programming. There is currently a $10,000 grant that needs to be matched in order to secure it. Bugalou is donating $5 for each ticket sold for this show to the fund, so a good turnout will give the fund a good start. There will also be a 50/50 raffle to raise additional funds, and

a table where you can find out more about RAA, KidsmArt, and the T-7 roof project. Lex Grey is one of the most charismatic performers around, whether she is belting out one of her own compositions, or putting her stamp on a rock, soul, or blues classic. The Urban Pioneers provide the backbone and muscle behind her vocal stylings. The band debuted in 1996 with the album, "Deal Me In,"

and released its seventh album, "Usual Suspects" in January this year. They have established a strong fan base in Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Catskills, and here in Rockaway. Rick Danko of The Band had declared her “A breath of fresh air,” while Warren Haynes of the Allman Brothers Band and Gov't Mule stated “that little lady can sing her ass off.” The Village Voice aptly described, “they will leave your

head in the clouds and your ass on the bar room floor.” Urban Pioneers bassist and Rockaway resident Tim Farrell will do double duty as he leads the night off with his other ensemble, 3 Sheets to the Wind, playing classic power trio rock to get everyone rolling. Cardiovascular disease (CVD), including stroke, is the largest contributor to the mortality difference between the white and black population in the United States. Numerous studies and research have proven this fact. CVD accounts for 34 percent of the difference in years of life lost between these two groups. This comes from the National Health Interview Survey, which collected data from 1986 to 1994, and showed that rates of hypertension in the two groups accounted for the higher death rate among black people. In fact, many studies have shown a higher prevalence of hypertension in black children aged eight to 17 years. The reasons for the higher incidence of hypertension and death from CVD in the black community are unknown, that is until a

study published recently revealed some answers to this question. The study, done at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, followed almost 7,000 study volunteers and assessed the rates of development of hypertension and CVD (all participants had normal blood pressure at the start of the study). They did indeed find that the rate of development of hypertension and CVD was higher in black participants than white ones. The rate of development of hypertension and CVD was almost twice as high in the black participants than in the white ones. The authors of the study then looked at a number of factors to account for the difference. By far the most important difference between the two groups was diet. Most of the black participants followed what is termed “the Southern diet,” whereas the white

participants did not. The Southern diet is a diet high in fried foods, organ meats, processed meats, eggs and egg dishes, added fats, highfat dairy foods, sugar-sweetened beverages, and bread. In other words, a very unhealthy diet. In other studies, this dietary pattern has been associated with stroke, coronary artery disease, kidney disease, infections, cancers, and dementia. Another factor between the two groups was that the black group had a higher dietary intake ratio of sodium to potassium. In other words, the black group used more salt in their diets. Another significant difference between the groups was an education level of high school or less and the median family income. Low educational attainment is associated with poorer health outcomes, shorter life expectancy, and higher blood

pressure. Low-income level is associated with the same outcomes and both are thought to cause these outcomes because of higher life stress. Larger waist size and higher BMI were also associated with higher incidence of hypertension and CVD, but interestingly enough, the rate of development of hypertension and CVD in this study was the same in obese black and white men, but not in obese women. The rate was higher in black women. In short, if young people want to live longer, they should eat a proper, wellrounded diet, exercise and stay fit, and stay in school. June 28: Just in time for July 4, the Riis Bathhouse finally re-opened by the owners of the Beach Bazaar, Jamesons celebrated its 20th anniversary, and Rockaway Beach Barbecue finally made its debut. The Parks Department, locals and the Army Corps of Engineers testified at a City Council hearing on the beach closure issue. July 5: Hope for the Warriors were gearing up to come to Rockaway the following week. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection announced a $400 million plan to further improve the ecological health of Jamaica Bay. July 12: The Rock! Away! Music Fest took over that weekend with more than 60 bands playing across the peninsula. Parks re-opened Beach 96th-98th, but with limitations that frustrated beachgoers.

July 19: We got Limed. Bike sharing programs Lime and Pace launched with bikes dotting the peninsula. The RT profiled Owen Loof, the colorful “Best Dressed Man in Rockaway.” Residents called for safety measures after an Arverne woman was killed by a car. July 26: The weekend was filled with the Two Bridges Music Fest, Jazz Fest and a Women’s Surf Film Fest, plus the Rockaway Times Sandcastle Contest. The fire trucks moved out of the Beach 116th Firehouse due to temporary asbestos abatement, but plans for the construction of a new firehouse at the HSBC bank site moved forward. August 2: The Rockaway Times Sandcastle Contest was the biggest yet with more than 40 participants. The Rock Out For Autism fundraiser concert was also a huge hit. August 9: One lucky pooch was saved by the right people in the right place at the right time after jumping into Jamaica Bay. St. John’s Hospital received more than $1M to upgrade

its maternity ward. The new Rockaway Dog House, owned by Kenny Good, proved to be a big hit. August 16: Don Riepe’s swan photo earned him first place in the photo contest. August 23: The old theater on Beach 116th was finally sold for a whopping $6.125M to Mark Caller, the developer of the soon-to-come One Sixteen condos across the street. O’Sake Ramen House opened up on Restaurant Row. Caribbean Carnival heated up Far Rock. August 30: The Ultimate RockaWarrior, Michael Hornung, was training for his first NYC Marathon to raise funds for the Parkinson’s Foundation. September 6: Labor Day came and went, but September was chock full of things to do. The community was gearing up to mark the 17th Anniversary of 9/11. USACE finally released an updated version of its study for coastal protection. Tom Sullivan and Slawomir Platta were going head to head

in the Republican primary for state senate. September 13: A highway sign with climate messages appeared on the boardwalk as part of the Climate Signals exhibit. September 20: The community mourned after CVSR student, Lamine Sarr, 17, died in a drowning incident on the beach. A dead deer washed up in Rockaway Beach while a live one was spotted in Roxbury. Far Rockaway High School was gearing up for a big reunion on the beach. September 27: Poseidon’s Parade rolled through town to end the summer. October 4: Ninety-six hatchlings of the world’s most endangered sea turtle, Kemp’s ridley, hatched in Breezy Point. The season of thievin’ continues and this time it was Whit’s End that got hit. In the early morning hours of December 20, a man broke into the Rockaway Beach restaurant and made off with iPads, a Macbook, the cash register drawer, chefs' knives and even a bottle of E&J, according to owner and chef Whitney Aycock. The man was caught by surveillance cameras, but still hasn’t been identified, and he’s still on the loose. Anyone with information should contact the 100th Precinct Detective Squad at 718318-4223.

Pickleball Promotes Health and Well-Being AND IT’S LOCAL By Dee Weber

What is pickleball and how can it promote health and a sense of well-being? Pickleball is a fusion of tennis, paddle ball and ping pong all rolled into one, played on a converted tennis court set up with a net and four players hitting a ball with a paddle. It’s a game for all ages that according to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association 2016 participation report, there are 2.5 million pickleball players in the U.S. This has created an explosion of new court construction throughout the U.S. Rockaway has possible sites for further creating a social and physical environment that promotes quality of life for all. Pickleball in Rockaway was introduced at our wonderful gem, Arverne By the Sea YMCA on Beach 74th Street, in January 2018, and has grown in numbers since. I have found myself heading for a spin class, then easily lured into the gym to play “PB”

instead! It has the same effect on other players, who love playing and enjoying a few laughs! The usual schedule during the year is Monday to Friday 8-9:30 a.m., then 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; Saturdays 8-10:30 a.m.; Wednesday nights from 8-10:30 p.m. In the summer, the hours changed to 6-8 a.m. and some of us diehards went at 6 a.m! Yes, “PB” is not only fun, but is a mental workout just trying to keep the score straight, as well as who is up serving! Pickleball is a sport that, especially as we age, is important for its social connectedness. Regular exercise provides mind, body and spiritual benefits which is well-documented in health literature. The Rockaway community could benefit by the reconstruction of local dilapidated courts, turning some of them into pickleball courts such as at Beach Channel High School, as well as some vacant courts at Riis Park. Maybe the YMCA could explore

using some outdoor space to add PB courts to be used seasonally. I would like to say to my family and friends, let’s go play some PB! Recent research have found that social team sports has a great impact on the individual‘s overall well-being, even improving mental health. This sport can be helpful for people trying to keep a balance of activity, as well as other healthy behaviors such as adequate sleep, good nutrition and maintaining a healthy weight. Evidence-based research has shown that exercise can improve important numbers such as blood pressure, blood glucose, hemoglobin A1C, cholesterol level, and weight reduction. A healthy lifestyle also includes smoking cessation, drinking in moderation, which can improve quality of life as well as longevity. The people that are engaged in physical exercise are less likely to get sick because they overall have been found to take better care of themselves. It has also been my

experience working in an emergency department for over thirty years that active people are less likely to need an ER on a regular basis! Let’s make our community healthier by providing more places to exercise, thereby improving our community’s quality of life. The federal government has addressed the state of population health by setting goals in a document called Healthy People 2020. The goals set by the government is to “attain high quality, longer lives free of preventable diseases, disability, injury and premature death by creating a social and physical environment that promotes healthy behaviors across all life stages.” Our growing community needs our political leaders, as well as other stakeholders in the community to explore how Rockaway can become a better place to live well.
