Mystery Solved: A 54-Year-Old Letter Returned to Sender By Katie McFadden
It’s like a letter in a bottle story, except this one, was found in a book. Through a kind gesture and quick connections made on social media, a 54-year-old letter from a Marine to his Aunt, is about to be returned to its sender. Gilberto Luina Jr. recently found a surprise inside a book he picked up at a thrift shop 15 years ago. His wife and sister had worked at Housing Works Thrift Shop on East 17th Street in Manhattan and contacted him when a book came in about old Rockaway. “They thought of me and I paid $5 for the book and brought it home. It was in a plastic cover and I never opened it,” Luina said. For 15 years, he left it alone until boredom and curiosity recently struck. “I opened it up and was going through the pages and there was an envelope. I looked at it and realized it was addressed to someone in Rockaway and thought wow, what a coincidence,” he said. The envelope, sent by Lance Corporal T Johnston, a U.S. Marine, was addressed to a Mrs. R Schaefer of Beach 125th Street. The envelope was postmarked March 1966. Out of respect for privacy, Luina didn’t open and read its contents. “It was an old letter and coming from military personnel, I figured they’d want to keep that private,” he said. However, he did want to find its owners. “I thought it would be nice to return this letter to the family,” he said. So he took to Facebook, turning to the Friends of Rockaway Beach page with 31,500 followers, in hopes of someone recognizing the names. On Sunday, December 27, he posted a photo of the envelope with a message saying he hoped to return the 54-year-old letter. The post was shared more than 50 times and had over 100 comments in response, but what he did not expect was how quickly a connection would be made. By the third response, someone rec-

ognized the names and tagged Michael Light, who reached out to his Uncle Tommy to see if he had an inkling about it. Uncle Tommy turned out to be the sender—Thomas Johnston. Johnston, a born and raised Rockaway man, now living in Florida, was surprised to get the call. When Johnston initially heard about the letter he had sent being found, he thought the U.S. Postal Service had failed to deliver and it had arrived five decades later. “My initial thought was, why didn’t my aunt receive it?” he said. After all, the intended recipient, his Aunt Regina Schaefer, died in the ‘90s. "Here I am blaming the post office, in my mind thinking it was 54 years late.” Johnston said. That is, until he heard about its origin of being found in a book and he realized this ordeal was story-worthy itself. “This is something you would read about in a book or magazine, like those instances where someone found a message in a bottle sent 100 years ago. It’s really funny,” Johnston said. After a connection was made with Light and Tommy’s sister, Regina Johnston Ronayne, Luina made arrangements with the family to return the letter to them the following day. But he didn’t have to go far. Luina was asked to meet up with Ronayne at her building in Dayton Towers, where he worked. On Monday, December 28, Luina met with Ronayne and Light, to reunite them with a piece of their family history. “I’m very glad that I got it back to the family
Michael Light and Gilberto Luina.
and I met with them. They’re wonderful people,” Luina said. “They couldn’t believe it, after 54 years that they had this letter in their possession. Both of them were afraid to open it to read it.” The contents of the letter remain a mystery, even to its writer. But he has a few guesses. Johnston, who served in the U.S. Marines from 1963 to 1967, says he was serving in Morocco in Africa, rather than in Vietnam at the time he wrote the letter. When Johnston had been in training in North Carolina, his Commanding Officer Jimmy Knapp happened to be the brother of a guy he grew up with, Frankie Knapp. “Jimmy called me and said, no friend of mine is going to Vietnam,” Johnston recalled. In Morocco, Johnston was safe from combat, but he believes the letter could be related to losing someone else. “My grandmother died in 1966. I don’t recall exactly, but I’m assuming that maybe it was about me sending condolences to my aunt after grandma died,” Johnston said. However, he’ll find out for sure soon. On January 7, Ronayne plans to travel to Florida to
see her brother and will be carrying the precious cargo of the letter. “I told her to mail it to me, but she insisted on bringing it. It’s been 54 years, I can wait a couple more days to read it,” Johnston said. Sometime in the future, Johnston hopes to meet the man who thought to find the letter’s owner. “I have rocks in my head but sand in my shoes and every year, with the exception of last summer, I come back to Rockaway,” Johnston said. “If I can get back there, I’m going to look this gentleman up and give him a big hug if we’re allowed, and a bottle of whatever he likes. He could’ve thrown that letter away, but he didn’t, and he deserves something for it.” After meeting with the family, Luina says he’s glad he made the effort to find the letter’s owner. “I feel great,” he said. “I did the right thing.” He also credits the community members of the Friends of Rockaway Beach page for helping. “Everything worked out beautifully. The whole community came together and if it wasn’t for the Friends of Rockaway, I would’ve never found the owners,” Luina said. “For all the of the problems going on this year with this pandemic, it was nice to see something positive.”

Tossing Away the Christmas Tree Christmas has come and gone, and you might be wondering, what do I do with the Christmas tree? If you have a real tree that you need to get rid of, the city offers options. Starting Monday, January 4, the Department of Sanitation will be picking up trees left on the curb to be composted. The trees are chipped, mixed with leaves, and recycled into rich compost for NYC’s parks, institutions, and community gardens. Be sure to remove all lights, ornaments, tinsel and plastic bags from your tree; trees that still have these items attached will be collected as garbage. Do not bag your tree. Trees will be collected from curbs for composting through January 15. If you discard your tree after this date, it will be collected as regular garbage.
Another option is to participate in the Parks Department’s MulchFest, in which trees are chipped and participants can take home a bag of mulch to use in personal gardens. It will take place on Saturday, January 2 and Saturday, January 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at nearly 80 locations across the city. Unfortunately, the closest chipping sites are Marine Park (East 33rd and Avenue U) and Idlewild Park in Springfield Gardens. However, there are also designated drop-off sites where trees will be picked up for MulchFest. The only local drop-off location is Beach 94th Street and Shore Front Parkway. You can drop off your tree there until January 9. For more information on Christmas tree collection and recycling or MulchFest, visit www.nyc.gov/dsny, www.nyc. gov/parks or call 311.

A Blurry Year Thanksgiving was at least six months ago. I went to a fantastic wedding last New Year’s Eve. But I swear that couple must be celebrating their third of fourth anniversary. It couldn’t have been just one year ago. No way. Australian wildfires which seemed to threaten everything Down Under happened in January. It was a big story that went up in flames. Sorry, sometimes puns just

insist on getting in. Anyway, where was I? Oh, Australia. The fires are forgotten and now the news is, the place is practically Covid-free. Those fires? Now I’m pretty sure they happened in 2015. Kobe Bryant? In a few weeks there will be one-year anniversary stories about his death (and those with him) in a helicopter crash. One year? Kobe Bryant died just eleven months ago? Impossible. And the Super Bowl? I don’t
even know who played. And that didn’t occur until February. And February? I’m not even sure if we had one this year. March is when the slow motion Hurricane Sandy started. I was spooked early so I didn’t go to the Rockaway St. Patrick’s Parade. I wasn’t freaking out; I just didn’t want to go some place where everybody might have the flu. Less than three weeks later, I was wearing gloves and looking at everyone else like they were Typhoid Mary. It’s easy to forget things in an unforgettable year. Parasite won Best Picture. I saw it and have zero– zero!– memory of it. I think Goya beans were a thing for a few days. And a tiger at the Bronx zoo got Covid. Everybody remembers the toilet paper shortage but hair coloring products disappeared as well. Formerly blond-haired women were saying roots was a pandemic, too. Normally, ha—there’s a 2020 word – normally, this is
the time of year when we have looking back stories. We have all those Top 10 lists and mark the death of celebrities (some of whom we say, huh, I didn’t know, they were still alive). I don’t think there’s a Top 10 of anything and celebrity deaths don’t seem noteworthy this time around. So, with 2020 in the books, did we all age ten years or do we get this year back? Are we gonna try to squeeze the fun we missed into 2021 and 2022? I’m thinking yes. Once the vaccine does its thing, there are gonna be a lot of people saying, I haven’t seen you, let’s go out, let’s get a drink. Dr. Fauci’s gonna be talking about hangovers. I know, I know, a virus doesn’t care about a calendar and the early part of 2021 is going to be dark but if there’s anything to remember from 2020, it’s that life is short and fragile, so you better get living. Good riddance to 2020. I hope soon, it feels like twenty years ago.

Rockaway Beach Bazaar to Take Over Boardwalk Concessions By Katie McFadden
The boardwalk concessions are changing hands. This week, after confirmation from NYC Parks, The Rockaway Times (RT) broke the news of Rockaway Beach Bazaar being selected as the operator for the boardwalk concessions starting summer 2021. The same folks who have been operating Riis Park Beach Bazaar since 2015 will keep the party going in Rockaway Beach. In a statement to The RT, NYC Parks said, “We are pleased to announce that Rockaway Beach Bazaar has been awarded the next contract to operate food and beverage concessions on the Rockaway Beach Boardwalk beginning Summer 2021. Rockaway Beach Bazaar was awarded a 15-year contract to operate the three outdoor concessions at Beach 106th, Beach 97th and Beach 86th Street, one beach shop, and up to 20 satellite units along the beach and boardwalk. In response to the news, co-owners and founders, Belvy
Klein and Aaron Broudo said, “We appreciate this opportunity and look forward to working together with the NYC Parks Department and the local Rockaway community, utilizing our proven track record to help make the Rockaway Beach boardwalk better than ever. “We have a 10 year+ track record of opening venues, building strong teams, managing vendors and programming events. Since 2015 we have run beach concessions and programming at Jacob Riis Park, where we have proved to be a safe and responsible operator while helping raise park attendance to levels not seen in decades. We have done this with an emphasis on hyper local vendors and staff. Our Rockaway Beach operation will follow this same example. While some expressed disappointment that some of the concessions Rockaway loves would be leaving, those of Rockaway Beach Bazaar say not so fast. “We intend to retain as many of the previous vendors as possible
and will be offering those operators first opportunity at their past concession locations, they said. Which concessions those are will depend on negotiations. Outgoing operator, Rockaway Beach Club, which was awarded the contract for the concessions back in 2011, is recognized for bringing a diversity of great eats and live music to the boardwalk for ten summers. The operators were faced with a number of obstacles in that time, most notably Hurricane Sandy destroying the boardwalk and concessions in 2012. They faced further challenges when the city closed beaches in front of the concession areas in 2018 due to erosion and again with the Covid-19 pandemic this year, which closed beaches to swimming until July. Despite all of this, Rockaway Beach Club persisted and prevailed. Of the news of not being awarded the contract, Andrew Field of Rockaway Beach Club said, “It’s all business in this city. Field added that they are considering the offer to continue business on
the boardwalk. “With that said, we are in conversations to see what kind of offer is proposed to keep dedicating our hearts and souls to the project we laid the groundwork for. The food industry is one of the hardest to be in, and we have to start to change the model. We, as a group, have spent the last decade diversifying the boardwalk with way more than just profit on our minds. We are all Rockaway residents, so we know how important it is to keep our neighbors employed and/ or make it a successful summer for the local small business participants, he said. “We are open to ideas, but they have to make financial sense to our organizations. Riis Bazaar’s contract for Bay 9 expired in November but they’ve submitted a proposal for the National Park Service’s RFP that may be decided in February. In the meantime, with this new opportunity, Rockaway Beach Bazaar says, “We are very excited and look forward to seeing everyone back at the beach!

***** Happy New Year. We said that last year but this time we really mean it. ***** We’re curious to see if January 1 polar plunges, which happen up and down the beach, will have smaller or bigger crowds than usual. There are plenty of people who want to wash away 2020 and bring in the New Year with a fresh (cold) start while others remain cautious about being around others. Forecast calls for around 44 degrees. Piece of cake. ***** A dolphin washed up on the beach at Riis Park earlier this week. Reports say it died of natural causes. Please keep in mind that you should keep your distance from seals and other sea creatures (dead or alive) on the beach. If you hap-
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2020 pen upon seal and you believe it is in distress, sick or showing visible wounds, call the N.Y. Marine Rescue Center (formerly the Riverhead Foundation) at 631-369-9829. Share photos or videos of the animal with them. Note the seal’s location, condition and any other important information with the organization, so they can determine if it is necessary to perform a rescue. ***** Tweet of the week: In 5 words or less, start a fight without politics. ***** 116 Street rumors. Odd Lot becoming a day care. Sweet 116 undergoing an overhaul. A Popeye’s Chicken taking over where Tru Force Martial Arts was (old Jamaica Savings Bank). A work permit is in the window of what used to be the Dunkin Donuts. ***** A reader asked us to put Melania Trump on the cover of the paper. Well, we just think that would be weird. Although if she moves to Rockaway….
***** Rockaway Beach Bazaar has been awarded the next contract to operate food and beverage concessions on the Rockaway Beach Boardwalk beginning Summer 2021. This group has been running operations at Riis Park the last few years. Among the plans is commitment to making the Beach 97th Street concession a year round venue. Oddly enough, the Bazaar people have not received word from Riis (National Park Service - NPS) regarding the renewal of the Bay 9 concessions. NPS received several proposals and will be evaluating through February. ***** We also have to note appreciation for those of Rockaway Beach Club who made the concessions such a great attraction for visitors and locals alike since 2011. They had to persevere after Sandy, be limited by an eroding beach, and deal with endless official restrictions. They helped transform the boardwalk and boardwalk life. We hope some of the busi-
The Rockaway Times nesses will continue to exist (and flourish) under the new management. ***** There’s always a ray of hope for the Rockaway Beach branch line – the transit line that would drastically cut commute times from Rockaway. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries represents Howard Beach and Ozone Park. At a rally in Queens a few years back, he and Rep. Greg Meeks joined other advocates for restoring the long-abandoned rail. Well, many say Jeffries has a good shot at succeeding Nancy Pelosi as Speaker. In such a powerful position, who knows, maybe he can get that train moving again. (But probably not). ***** Thank you! We eclipsed the 10,000 follower mark on Instagram last week. And now we’re aiming to get 5,000 people signed up for our weekly email version of The Rockaway Times. Send us an email (mail@rockawaytimes. com) with your name and interest and we’ll take care of the rest.
Christmas Blessings By Raquel Priolo
Loss has come too close to home. While most assume it must be a loss due to COVID, this is not the case for a local family as they spent their first holidays mourning their young mother, who died giving birth in October. Miraculously, the baby girl Melanie Carolina survived. Losing a beloved parent as an adult is an indescribable emptiness that you can never fill. Imagine in a child’s eyes, who has never felt loss, yet now has to experience their first sense of security and love vanish. Their mom went to have a baby and she never came home. Then appears a small Christmas miracle. A parishioner from Saint Francis de Sales. His simple request…to help a local family in need. And with all his great connections, a call was made to the great St. Nick. Yes, Santa agreed to make a special, in person appearance, on Christmas morning. He filled
their world with the merriest of Christmas cheer. The local community also pitched in, adding wrapped gifts and a delicious Christmas dinner. The manager from East Meets West rallied the local restaurants on Beach 129th and without question, they all gladly pitched in, continuing to feed the family. La Sorrentina, Pico’s and Jameson’s made sure the family didn’t have to

worry about food for a while, despite the tough times the restauranteurs are all facing themselves. Tears of joy could be the only way to explain how fulfilling it was to witness the tremendous outpouring of support that flooded this family on this first holiday without their beautiful mother. I believe she is smiling down grateful for the abundance of love surrounding her family, which is exactly as she
would’ve wanted it. To all the silent angels in this community, we are eternally grateful, especially during this trying time. Encountering a blessing, especially when things might seem the most helpless and hopeless, and even for a moment, you can unknowingly ease someone’s suffering, it is then when you realize every day is a gift. God Bless and Thank You.

JUST 21 - A Candidate for NYC Council District 32 By Marina Cregan
At just 21 years-old, Shaeleigh Severino, has decided to run for District 32’s City Council, in the hopes of replacing Councilman Eric Ulrich. Born and raised in Ozone Park, Severino states she is, “an advocate. Not a Politician.” Because Severino has grown up and continues to live in District 32, she expressed to The Rockaway Times that she is running on a platform entirely for the people and by the people. “Any elected role is supposed to advocate for the people you are representing,” Severino said. And from the moment she began her campaign, that is what Severino and her team have been doing. Whether it is going out to hear from community members, or giving PPE to local businesses and people, Severino wants the people of District 32 to know that she is fully devoted to advocating for every community. “My number one focus has always been advocacy, and because this district has such a wide range on the political spectrum, running for office means I have to represent and advocate for everyone,” Severino said. Severino, self-described progressive democrat, is currently a Senior at St. John's University, working to earn her BA in Government Politics and BS in Legal Studies. Before deciding to run for office, Severino had originally planned on attending law school after earning her St. John's degree. However, she realized that she was needed elsewhere as a leader for the people. And despite her age, she has received positive feedback from community members across the district. Communications Director of the Severino Campaign, Amelia Eberline, said, "The district is excited about Shaeleigh's age. They value, appreciate, and seek young leaders. They see Shaeleigh's energy and unmuddied special interests as a good thing!" Severino stated that she has been actively making her presence known here in the Rockaways, because time and time
again issues Rockaway residents face have been neglected. For a peninsula with many local businesses, Severino expressed how frustrating it is to see the lack of attention these businesses have received. “Queens currently receives the least amount of funding from the Federal Cares Act, and lots of these small businesses and restaurants will not survive a second lockdown,” Severino said. If elected, Severino says she will start preparing legislation to send to the City, advocating for the need of financial aid and grants to help support local businesses. Since the beginning of her campaign, Severino has been going to local businesses asking if they need any help applying for existing grants and providing PPE to employees. Regarding restricting indoor dining in NYC, Severino expressed how much this is hurting businesses. Severino said, “We need to establish a set protocol for outdoor dining and take-out, as well as a protocol to allow for indoor dining and help businesses stay open at a set capacity.” One important issue that Severino hopes to resolve is the District’s current public school system. As a City Council Member, Severino hopes to reestablish the desire to learn for all children. Because of COVID-19 and the transition to hybrid/remote learning, the community needs to combat this issue of the lack of attention for schooling. Severino stated that we must utilize our community centers, senior centers, and perhaps small businesses. “We can’t just have

a child sitting on the computer all day, that is no way to learn and fully retain the information. If we utilize spaces that already have proper protocols for sanitization and WiFi connectivity, then we can allow for children to utilize these spaces and learn together,” Severino said. Additionally, as a woman with an autoimmune disability and having gone through the public school system until college, Severino has seen firsthand that many children with disabilities do not receive the aid and support that they require. And since the pandemic, this has only become more apparent. Severino said that the lack of resources for those with disabilities needs to be recognized and resolved. Another issue Severino hopes to tackle if elected, is the Jamaica Bay Bill that was just recently vetoed by Governor Cuomo. “While NYC is prioritized as a whole, Rockaway’s environmental justice has been constantly ignored and forgotten,” Severino said. She expressed that as City Councilwoman, she will apply pressure at all levels of government in order to pass legislation to help the Rockaway community. Because District 32 is so diverse, Severino also expressed the importance of finding a balance between the people with so many differing viewpoints. Severino stated that this district currently holds the largest number of NYPD, law enforcement agents, and veterans. “As a young black woman, it is crucial to have these conversations with community members and find a balance. I have family who are law enforcement agents and serving in the military. The main way we can find this balance is to create an a wide reform for public safety,” Severino said. If elected, Severino plans to tackle the issue of police re-
form by recognizing the holds that currently exist in the system. Severino stated, “This means that as a community, we must hold police accountable, but also notice that many times officers are not allowed to speak up when witnessing injustices. There are no protections for officers who report corrupt matters.” In hopes of establishing more faith and respect for NYPD officers, Severino stated that mental health resources should be available. She also stated that there will be protections put in place that will allow officers to utilize these resources without the risk of being reported and losing their quality of life. Severino also advocates removing qualified immunity. She said, “Police and people shouldn’t be at odds. If we remove qualified immunity, we are rebuilding trust in the community and everyone else, which will bring both sides together.” The last issue Severino discussed with The Rockaway Times was the importance of supplying voting information to all people throughout the district. Regarding ranked voting, she stated that the City Council will need to look at this carefully. They must be informed by the Board of Elections how much ranked voting will cost and what it takes to be implemented properly. “My biggest concern is about the June primaries. Will there be enough voting information available to the public? Will the people be aware of ranked voting and what this entails?” Severino said. If elected, Severino is making the availability of voting awareness a top priority. She stated that this is a big issue she hopes to advocate for the people, because the district should not suffer from any type of voter suppression. Running as an advocate for the people, Severino said, “As a young black woman, it is especially important that I bring all my lived experiences to this position. That means acknowledging the issues that currently exist and working hard to resolve every community’s issues within District 32.”

Grace. Balance. Strength “The wisdom voice says: ‘Be still. Take time for what is truly important.’ Imagine yourself diving, leaving behind an untidy trail of what’s not needed. I cast aside worry, which has never brought me anything even remotely useful. I let go of doubt, and all the countless ways I tie myself in knots. Scattered behind me like discarded clothes are old beliefs, selfish agendas, my fixed and false identities, attachment to particular results. Weightless, and miraculously free, my eyes shine with wonder and enthusiasm.
The wisdom voice says: ‘There is always time enough for joy.’ Danna Faulds As we approach the turning of the new year, I am thinking about what I want to leave behind that does not serve me well and does not do any good for anyone else. Past hurts and heavy burdens are on my list. Letting go of these things I know will make room for lightness and joy. The calendar helps us to make time to do this - at the start of the new year. of and looking behind as you walk and leave it there. It can be a thoughtful intention as you sit quietly. However you do it, it will be helpful to move forward to 2021 with a purer heart and clearer mind. Once you have cleared out whatever is clouding you, imagine that there is a guiding steadfast star deep within you that will show you your way whenever you need it. Whenever you are in need of guidance, conjure up this image and let the answer arise. Letting yourself “see, “be in the flow and “rely on your inner guidance. Thinking it could be so, will allow it to be for you. When guiding a yoga class, I have offered the suggestion to move through the asanas (yoga poses) with Grace, Balance and Strength. GBS (like GPS) - our navigational system to be secure, safe and happy. Taking this off the mat and into the world, it is a wonderful reminder as we move to 2021 to move through our lives with these three positive guides.
Grace: coming from a place of inner peace for a situation, provocation, any reaction. Being courteous, civil, thoughtful, respectful. Balance: weighing things in our minds with thoughtful contemplation and tempering the negative emotions that may arise. Strength: feeling rooted to the earth with unwavering firmness and acting from a place of real inner power and soundness. We are the source of our own power that can initialize these guides and make them a part of our lives. Best wishes to all who read these words for good health, joy and peace in 2021 and beyond! And thank you Kevin and all the staff at the RT for giving us the opportunity to share our thoughts, feelings, experiences and learnings in this column. We are grateful. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be compassionate. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Bladder cancer, also known as urothelial (cells that line the urinary tract) cancer, is fairly common and about half of the cases are not that dangerous. Formerly known as transitional cell carcinoma, urothelial cancers can occur in the bladder, ureters (tubes that connect the kidneys to the bladder), and kidneys, but by far most occur in the bladder. A common symptom of urothelial cancer is painless hematuria, or blood in the urine. Blood in the urine may be visible or the urine may look normal but test positive for blood using a dipstick or lab test. Painful urination (dysuria) and back pain may be other symptoms. Thankfully, the two other, more invasive types of bladder cancer, squamous cell and adenocarcinoma, are both exceedingly rare in the U.S. One problem with urothelial cancer is that recurrence is common,
A Matter of The Bladder so close monitoring of anyone who has had it is important. Urothelial cancer, like most other cancers, is caused by DNA mutations. Smoking is a significant risk factor. Other risk factors include advanced age, male sex (it occurs much more commonly in men), and long-term exposure to certain chemicals such as those used in the manufacturing of dyes, rubber, leather, textiles, and paint. Previous cancer treatment that used cyclophosphamide (chemotherapy) or radiation in the pelvic area is also a risk factor, as are recurrent urinary infections and a family history of bladder cancer. Prevention recommendations include avoiding smoking, using care with industrial chemicals, and eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables (because they contain antioxidants which prevent or repair DNA mutations). Diagnosing urothelial cancer uses cystoscopy (looking inside the bladder with a scope)
They count on you...
and biopsy, urine cytology (looking for cancerous cells in the urine), and a CT cystogram (putting dye into the bladder while under a CAT scanner). Once diagnosed, it is important to look for spread (metastasis) using PET, MRI, CAT, or bone scans. The cancer is staged from 0 to IV, where 0 is no spread (in situ) and IV is distant metastasis. Also, the tumor cells are graded under the microscope from low grade dysplasia (the cells appear nearly normal) to high grade dysplasia (the cells are a jumbled mass with no semblance of normal tissue). Treatment depends on staging and grade. Low grade, stage 0 or 1 tumors, can be treated locally with radiation and or medications put into the bladder, whereas high grade tumors are treated with surgical removal of the tumor using transurethral resection of the bladder (TURBT) or full removal of the bladder (radical cystectomy). Radical cystecto-
my in men includes removal of the prostate, and in women the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, and part of the vagina, almost guaranteeing significant sexual dysfunction. Also, in radical cystectomy the urine must still exit the body somehow, which is achieved by using intestinal tissue to create a new bladder outside (ileal conduit) or inside (neobladder) of the body. If the tumor has invaded the wall of the bladder or metastasized outside of the bladder, combinations of surgery, intravesicular (into the bladder) and/or intravenous chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy can be used. Pandemic Movie Tragedy By Lou Pastina
This year that keeps on giving, forced us to watch more television than ever. The only problem was that they could not shoot new shows fast enough, so once we got through Tiger King, The Queens Gambit, The Mandalorian and The Crown, there was little to watch. Occasionally, we would come across a gem that was little noticed before, like Kim’s Convenience, but if you didn’t subscribe to several streaming services it was hard to keep up. There is nothing like sitting in a movie theater with a tub of buttered popcorn and a coke to take you away. But alas, that was not an option this year. The holidays bring out all the old movies like It’s A Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street and March of the Wooden Soldiers. Those black and white films are over 70 years old! Even more recent classics like Raiders of the Lost Ark are nearly 40 years, which is very hard to believe! So, it was with some excitement that I looked forward to a couple of new movies that were sent straight to the little screen. The first was a Mel Gibson film about Santa Claus, previewed as a dark comedy. I know, I know, how can I watch Mel when he’s
been labeled a racist and worse, but hell, we are talking about the Patriot, Braveheart, and so many great roles. Well, spoiler alert, Mel must really need the work, because Fatman was the worst piece of you know what I have ever seen. And it had other stars in it, too! No plot, awful sentiments, a holiday movie? Really. Mel needs more help than I ever imagined. But he does have nice blue eyes. The second was the overly hyped Wonder Woman 1984 with Gal Gadot. She shone in the original Wonder Woman movie, and her life story is somewhat inspirational. The movie also stars Kristin Wiig of Saturday Night Live fame and the guy from the Mandalorian, so I was pretty pumped. But two and half hours later I sat in my darkened living room wondering who the heck thought that movie was a good idea. I mean it had the lamest plot, the acting was terrible, the special effects where great, but who cares when the movie stinks. So, I thought to myself, has the pandemic ruined all creativity? What happened to the movies of yester-year? They were so layered, so contextualized, so interesting and entertaining. Some were done during war years, so they knew hardship and despair. Had the pandemic robbed that portion of our humanity that enabled us to create? Then by accident I came across an animated movie called Soul with Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey as the voice overs. The movie was created by Pixar and the effects are stunning. And the plot is so deep, esoteric and philosophical that I thought I
was at a Yoga Nidra at Ocean Bliss Yoga studio. The storyline hit all the right emotional notes and had me thinking long after it was over. Maybe I have just gotten to that age when cartoons are all I can handle, but let me tell you this, if you want a good one, Soul is it. And while I’m extolling the creativity of Soul, let me give you another cartoon worthy of watching: Klaus. This alternative tale on the beginnings of Santa Claus was equally excellent. Again, I like stories that tell a moral. And Klaus does that with wit, charm, laughter and a heart. Ok, so you are now wondering, has Laser lost it again? Does he think he’s a movie critic now? Well, no to the second question, and probably
yes to the first. Because now I would like the Laser life story to be done as a cartoon. Which is what people have been saying about my life for some time now! Here’s to a better year coming! Happy New Year to all!

Daughter Concerns Dear Enchantress Shane, I've been struggling for a while with my 13-year-old daughter and her choices in clothing and posts on social media (I do limit her to only friends online) that seem to be, sexually suggestive and inviting of unwanted age inappropriate attention. I'm a strong believer in not policing women or girls to protect them from boys or men's violations of consent. Yet there is this grey area I'm being confronted with. My daughter thinks it's just pretty and fashionable and she is happy and proud of the way she looks, in contrast to when she didn't feel confident. And it
Page 35
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2020
is important to me to nurture her confidence and acceptance and approval of her body and her sexuality. Yet I am confused if sexual attention from men and boys is something she needs to be protected from at this age. I would greatly appreciate your input. Dear Wise & Brave Mama, Thank you. This topic is huge and it sounds like you have done your homework and are honoring your daughter as she’s maturing. Also, as a rebellious teenager, I snuck sexy clothes out of my house and got dressed elsewhere. Now everything is about the photo.
In terms of protecting her from sexual attention, that is impossible. What is possible, is keeping the dialogue with her open, and turning up her awareness and noticing skills. When you are in a resourced place, and you’re calm and present, and perhaps have asked your daughter for time to chat about this, (as to not spring this on her.) Open the conversation as neutral as you can and share that you genuinely want her to have fun and feel good in her clothes, and you’re curious if she ever notices how her appearance impacts boys. I would suggest keeping the conversation about “boys” and not men. I am a strong believer in keeping the relationship strong more than anything. So, this advice is based on keeping the connection. Collecting information from her, asking her questions, and you listening gives her more reason to trust you, holding off teachable moments, and giving your opinion for another time. Really learning about how she sees herself, what her intentions are. She may be seeking attention from boys, and it might be
age appropriate, and that is a different conversation. Is she inspired by certain celebrities? Movies? Shows? Also consider where is she getting these clothes? If you are buying them for her and they come with conditions, it is confusing for her, and the conditions are hard to manage after she already owns them. At her age, she is finding her self-expression, and while saying that, there are also moments where Mom gets to say, “no, that outfit is not ok,” and with no explanation, just the “no.” One more piece here, consider if she has any hobbies or is involved with some other forms of self-expression that do not rely on what she looks like. Focusing on looks as the main thing leads to comparison, and competitions. So, celebrating all the things she does well, and redirecting her towards other fun goals and her wishes and dreams, is wise if the clothing conversation gets to be a place for disagreement. To ask Enchantress Shane a question write to her at love@enchantedembodiment.com
