Have Your Stocking Hung by the Bar With Care By Bianca Fortis
A charity that stemmed from the wreckage of Hurricane Sandy will be better and bigger this year. Rockaway resident Eugene Brennan started the idea for Stocking for a Cause in 2012 in direct response to the havoc that Sandy reaped on Rockaway. Before Christmas of that year, Brennan and his staff were decorating the bar of his Manhattan restaurant, Park Avenue Tavern, when “a light went on,” he said. He asked his patrons for donations for Rockaway – in exchange, the donors would have a stocking labeled with their names hung along the bar. “It was such a great hit,” he said. “The stockings looked fantastic around the restaurant, so we decided to do it again.” In 2013, the charity was able to raise thousands of dollars, which was given to a Wounded Warrior who had lost both of his legs while serving. This year Stockings for a Cause is partnering with Your Grateful Nation, an organization that helps
veterans of special forces transition into civilian life. The organization is affiliated with Rob O’Neill, the former Navy Seal who, in 2011, fired the shots that killed Osama bin Laden. “They do a lot of the work that
we don’t even know about,” he said. “They come home and just because they have no missing limbs, doesn’t mean they’re not wounded. It’s a shame what they
have to go through.” Brennan said it can be a challenge to choose the recipient of the funds each year. “It’s not the easiest decision because there are so many people out there that need help,” he said. He said Rockaway has a history of supporting armed forces, which has guided that decision this year and last year. “I’ve always been a supporter of those people who make those sacrifices day in and day out,” he said. Brennan is trying to continue expanding the charity this year. More bars and restaurants in Rockaway and throughout Manhattan will be participating. Additionally, his brothers in San Diego will have stockings in their bars too. This year, anyone interested in donating will have the option of contributing online. The link will be available later this week through http:// yourgratefulnation.org. Donors can select the bar or restaurant in which they would like to have a stocking hung and the amount they would like to contribute.

TWO YEARS LATER, AUTO DEALER STILL PROVIDING SANDY RELIEF.
Marquis Auto of Queens Continues To Discount Automobiles For Those Affected By Sandy. Hurricane Sandy affected so many and so quickly. As we look back on the two year anniversary, and with the holiday season upon us, one company doesn’t forget the hardships endured by us all and continues to give this holiday season. Marquis Auto of Queens is one of the largest auto leasing companies in New York with over 20 years of experience in the automotive industry. They are conveniently located at 158-01 Cross Bay Boulevard in the same building as Dr. Istrico. They opened their Queens location a little over a year ago. Like many of us, the owners were hit hard by Sandy and understand that even though it has been two years since the storm, most are still in recovery mode. That’s why Marquis Auto of Queens continues to provide discounts to those who were affected by Sandy. Grace Candela, General Manager and Director of Sales, vows to stay committed to those still in recovery. “Most people lost multiple cars as a result of the storm and were forced to either lease or finance a car right away. Because of that, most signed bad leases or likely overpaid for their cars. We want to help. Tell us you were affected by Sandy and we will further discount our already low prices. We want to help rebuild our community.” Marquis Auto of Queens offers all makes and models for less than dealerships and competitors. They have built a reputation on price and service. Like your trusted stock broker and real estate agent, Marquis Auto of Queens brokers the best deal on the automobile of your choice. They purchase automobiles directly from a manufacturer’s fleet department, bypassing dealerships, and passing savings to their customers. Given their vast network of fleet departments, Marquis Auto of Queens has the ability to locate hard to find cars. They also specialize in helping you get out of a bad lease and into a new and better priced automobile. They will make your car buying experience a pleasure. Their white glove service includes a knowledgeable staff and free delivery of your new car to your home or business. Candela is not shy to reinforce Marquis Auto Of Queens’ business model. “We pride ourselves on servicing our community. We don’t just sell cars, we build relationships.”

News Briefs The Rockaway Youth Task Force is holding a #BlackLivesMatter youth town hall meeting on police and community relations in response to the grand jury’s decision not to indict Officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, MO as well as Wednesday’s grand jury decision not to indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo, who choked Eric Garner, resulting in his death. RYTF is inviting local youth to share their thoughts on the incidents in Ferguson, police brutality and black on black crime. RYTF has already taken action in response to the ruling in Ferguson by holding a protest in Herald Square on Black Friday. The group will discuss the impact of spending and the role economic power plays on social justice. The town hall will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 11 at Far Rockaway Library (1637 Central Ave.)

Why Doesn’t an Egg Taste Like Chicken? You know the Geico commercial. Somebody acts a little surprised when they read or hear, “15 minutes could save you 15 percent or more on car insurance.” Somebody else responds, “Everybody knows that.”… I stumble across little factoids or deep imponderables and as soon as I share them, I wait for somebody to say, “Duh, no kidding.” I know I’m not the first person to wonder about Superman. Bullets

bounce off his chest, so why does he duck when a gun is thrown at his head? Other questions have been asked by deep thinkers but they’re new to me. Maybe everyone knows about saving 15 percent on car insurance but does everybody wonder why Japanese kamikaze pilots wore helmets? Maybe everyone knows about saving 15 percent but does every-
one know why people say about finding things, “It’s always the last place you look.” Uh, no kidding. Why keep looking if you’ve already found it. Of course, I know people who have found their keys and while holding them in their hand, have looked for them in a couple more places. “Fifteen minutes can save you 15 percent” is now a common phrase but some people get testy about common phrases. “New and improved” irks some. It’s either new or improved. If it’s new, it hasn’t existed, therefore, it can’t be improved. Of course, most of us aren’t such sticklers, we get it. Though sometimes new and improved isn’t either one. There is the story about how Tampax Tampons called itself “improved” by putting fewer tampons in a box. This resulted in a drop in sales. So what did Tampax do? They went back to the original quantity and called it “new and improved.” Other questions that seem to stump much of mankind involves regular human behavior. Why do people get up to search the entire room or house for the TV remote? They can’t find the energy or the willingness to walk to the TV to change the channel manually but will tear apart a place looking for that damn remote. Of course, most people couldn’t figure out
how to change the channel manually (me!) so they’ve gotta tear down the house looking. My guess is that it’s mostly a man thing. They need the remote. And they need it bad. Women will look for it a little, then shrug and watch whatever is on. In defense of the remote-needy men, they are usually looking desperately for the remote because the TV is turned to one of those god-awful Housewives shows. It’s like they have to find the remote before their head explodes or they throw the TV out the window. Remote addiction isn’t limited to having the device in hand. Those same remote fanatics will press buttons as hard as they can when the batteries are dead. As if pressing will bring the batteries back to life. Remotes can cruel. Sometimes the lights flicker giving the remote junkie hope. But I digress… The remote is just one thing I’ve found that people struggle with. Deep thinkers want to know: How does the guy who drives the snowplow get to work in the mornings? If a cow laughed, would milk come out of her nose? I hope these questions don’t keep you up at night but I do wonder…. If you ate pasta and antipasta, would you still be hungry?

The 69 violations in that single month bring the total to 433 for the year. The 101st Precinct gave out 70 tickets for cell phone violations, bringing
the total to 601 for the year so far. These stats were recorded before even harsher cell phone violation punishments took effect on November 1. New drivers with a probationary license, Class DJ, Class MJ or a learner permit can have their license suspended for 120 days if caught using a phone. The maximum fines for all drivers have also increased. A first offense can cost up to $200, a second can cost up to $250 and a third can cost up to $450. Drivers can be punished for something as simple as looking at a cell phone while it is in your hand, even if you’re not using it to transfer messages. ***** The Rockaway Theatre Company is hosting The Theater of War: Soldiers & Citizens Tour on Saturday, December 6th. Two actors, Zach Grenier (seen regularly on The Good Wife) and Marin Ireland (seen in Homeland) will present dramatic readings of Sophocles’ Ajax — an ancient Greek tragedy about the suicide of a great, respected warrior. The presentations, the producers say, are “intended to foster understanding and compassion, while mobilizing citizens and resources to help improve the lives of service members, veterans, and their families and communities.” Tickets are free but seating is limited. Diversity Training Offered for Nonprofits Jingle Bell Rock-away Dear Editor, I just wanted to say how nice it is to see Rockaway still active even though the summer is over. I can’t wait for the Taste of Rockaway event on December 13. I had a blast at the last one and I’m thankful that the local restaurants started such a great event. The number of holiday events going on and coming up is also overwhelming and wonderful! Residents are starting to decorate their terraces and homes all around. This week we got to see the Beach 116th Street and Broad Channel trees light up and with the Little North Pole lighting up this weekend, I’m really starting to get into the holiday spirit, and I hope the rest of the neighborhood feels it too. I think there will also be the menorah lighting on Beach 116th street and a tree lighting around 94th street. The fact that we can even get our holiday shopping done right here locally is pretty cool and everyone should consider supporting local business this month. Between the many boutiques being held such as the one at the Yacht Club and St. Camillus and all of our local gift shops, finding gifts has never been easier. One of the biggest events I’m looking forward to is the Santa Shuffle coming up later this month. I’ve never done it before, but I’m looking forward to running the first time this year with my sister. I’m sure it will be hilarious to see everyone running around, dressed as Santa. It might be too cold for the beach, but it’s still nice to see that there’s so much happening while we wait for next summer.

Borough President Melinda Katz and the NonProfit HelpDesk are hosting no-cost training workshops “Taking Your NonProfit to the Next Level” to help empower organizations with knowledge and skills for success. The two-part workshop on Diversity Training and Governance will be offered by NPHD, a division of the Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island. The workshop will be open to the management, staff and board members of any nonprofit community service organization or business based in the Borough of Queens. To reg-
ister for the workshop, visit www. queensbp.org/queens-calendar. “Nonprofit organizations provide valuable services to people of The World’s Borough,” Borough President Katz said. “Oftentimes, it’s the community-based nonprofits that are the first lines of response for critical services, so we want to help strengthen their organization to ensure resources are used most effectively and efficiently.” The first workshop will be held Monday, December 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Queens Borough Hall, 12055 Queens Blvd., in the Borough President’s Conference Room.

Making Us Blush Dear Editor: I hope you’re having a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. I wanted to personally reach out to you and let you know how great the Rockaway Times is coming along. As I was reading this weeks “Thank You” edition, I couldn’t help noticing the impeccable attention to detail that you and your staff give to the paper. Everything from the spacing and the placement of the ads to how thoughtful and well written each article is continues to blow me away. The paper is beautifully presented and I am very excited to see it continue to grow. I know you wrote “This Turkey Sends His Thanks”, but I would like to thank you, your staff and your family for giving Rockaway a new outlet for respectable news. I know how much time and dedication it takes to get something off the ground, and I know that you guys (and gals) over there at the Rockaway Times love what you do. Thank you for your passion, humility, wisdom and humor. You guys deserve every bit of praise.
Giving Thanks To St. John’s Dear Editor: Unfortunately, on Tuesday, November 25, while working, I took a fall that required medical attention. Upon arrival of the EMS, the technician advised me of the injuries and said that we were going to Kings County Hospital. I then asked if we could go to St. John’s Hospital and they agreed and off we went. On the way to the hospital, the EMT notified the hospital that we were on our way. Upon arrival, it was an early Thanksgiving present to me to be met by the staff supervised by Vicky Backus. The E.R. was packed, but they attended to me with such care that I had to write this letter. This honestly made a horrible day for me into a situation where people make the difference. Thank you.

Rail Option Gets Brief Look by Borough Board
By Bianca Fortis
The Rockaway Beach Branch of the Long Island Railroad got a brief mention during a meeting of the Queens Borough Board Monday night, during which the future of Queens was discussed. Councilmember Elizabeth Crowley asked Carl Weisbrod, the Director of the NYC Department of City Planning and the Chairman of the New York City Planning Commission, if the city had any plans to subsidize the cost of the LIRR for Queens residents or whether it will reconsider reactivating lines that are no longer used. Crowley said that much of Queens is starved for better transit options. The LIRR helps fulfill that need, but is cost prohibitive for many of the borough’s residents.
Weisbrod countered that the reason service on the the Rockaway Beach Branch was terminated was because of insufficient ridership. “The only way ridership can be enticed back is to increase the demand for it,” he said. One way to do that is to increase opportunities for housing throughout the borough. The city has been discussing the use of Metro North through the Bronx, but increasing usage of the LIRR is “a discussion that’s worth having,” he said. “I don’t have any problems talking about the LIRR as well.” Crowley represents Glendale, Maspeth, Middle Village, Ridgewood and parts of Woodside and Woodhaven.

Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder announced the open application period this week. “Southern Queens and Rockaway are fortunate to have very engaged, active civic groups dedicated to improving our neighborhoods,” Goldfeder said. “I encourage eligible applicants to take advantage of this opportunity and apply for these Neighborhood Grants.” The grants, provided by the Citizens Committee for New York, are awarded to neighborhood groups
and public school-based groups working to improve the quality of life in southern Queens and Rockaway, and across the city. Projects eligible for funding may range from community gardening and theatre and fine arts programs; to composting, tenant organizing and more. The deadline for this round of grants is January 26, 2015. Interested applicants are encouraged to contact the Assemblyman’s office for details by calling (718) 9459550 or emailing Assemblyman Goldfeder at goldfederp@assembly.state.ny.us.

Between the Bridges in Broad Channel By Peter J. Mahon
Remembering Mike McLoughlin One year ago this month our friend and neighbor, Mike McLoughlin, retired to his residence on West 12th Road, sat down in his bedroom and quietly passed from this life at the young age of 51 when his heart stopped beating. I was always constantly amazed by Mike’s sense of optimism and outgoing personality. When you engaged him in conversation it was always about you and not him. Mike was the type of man who truly wore his
heart on his sleeve. It is said that a bad neighbor is a misfortune but a good neighbor is a blessing. Mike was truly that blessing and his friends and neighbors in Broad Channel miss him as we mark the first anniversary of his passing. Great to see our friend and neighbor Terry Horn out of the hospital and recovering nicely back home with his wife Barbara and their two children Erin and Chris.
This past Sunday, November 30th, the 2014 Atlantic Basin Hurricane Season came to an unremarkable close. During the season there were a total of 8 named storms, 6 hurricanes and 2 Tropical Storms. Thankfully, none of these storms directly impacted our community of Broad Channel. That being said, we can now turn our focus toward more seasonal weather events such as Nor’Easters, frigid temperatures and frozen pipes. Don’t forget to stop by the Broad Channel VFW Hall Friday evening, December 12th , at 7 pm and enjoy an evening of music for our veterans with the music of Walker and Friends ($15 cover). Call Vinny at 347-697-8774 for more information on this event. All proceeds go towards providing much needed services for our veterans. The Broad Channel Crafters and the American Legion Auxillary will host the 26th Annual Craft and Christmas Gift Sale at the Broad Channel American Legion Hall this Friday, December 5th (6pm9pm) and Saturday, December 6th (9am-7pm). Jewelry, ornaments, baked goods, seasonal decorations and much more! Our neighbor Debbie Spanburgh-O’Connor will be hosting a fundraiser to benefit the Pediatric and Hematology Department of the Cohen Children’s Medical Center at North Shore LIJ this Friday,
December 5th , at Grassy’s. Drink specials and raffles will be ongoing. Drop off a new, unwrapped child’s toy (no stuffed animals please) and receive a free drink. Don’t forget to pick up your copy of the new 2015 Broad Channel Historical Society Calendar, still a steal at only $5 per, at the Rock n Roll Bagel or the All American Channel Market. If you can take advantage of some of the COD fuel delivery services that are available for our area (e.g.: codfuel.com), the cold weather beginning to settle in for the season carries with it some good news regarding the price of home heating oil. This time last year I paid $3.80 per gallon for a delivery but just this week that price has decreased more than 25% to $2.74 per gallon. Granted you have to be home with cash in hand at the time of scheduled delivery, but the savings make it all worthwhile. Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else? City Commissioner: Advocating for Domestic Violence Victims By Bianca Fortis
Rosemonde Pierre-Louis was appointed as the Commissioner of the Office to Combat Domestic Violence in January. She has spent the last year traveling to neighborhoods throughout the City to increase awareness of the issue of domestic violence. She worked as a public interest attorney and helped low income New Yorkers access legal services. She realized her true passion was helping victims of domestic violence and focused her work on that issue. Most recently she served as a Deputy Borough President under Scott Stringer until she was appointed to her new position. “For me it is a full circle moment in my career to come back to an issue I really love and care about,” she said. She has made outreach to the many neighborhoods of New York a priority; she has already met with every community board, every precinct council and every elected official on the city, state and federal level, she said. We had the opportunity to sit down with Pierre-Louis to learn more about the issue of domestic
violence and the work her office is doing. What is the definition of domestic violence? Everyone thinks punching, hitting and biting when they think of domestic violence. I describe that as a dynamic. The definition of domestic violence is the pattern of coercive behavior intended by one person to exert power and control over the other. That can be physical, psychological, verbal, financial. There is also cyber abuse which involves the use of technology to stalk a victim. With financial abuse, an abuser may run up credit cards or may withhold money. It’s important to understand that domestic violence is not just punching, hitting or slapping. What is the correct course of action for someone who believes they may be a victim of domestic violence? If there an immediate emergency, they should call 911. If they need assistance with shelter, they can speak to someone through a hotline. The number is 800-621HOPE. If they’d like to reach my office, they can reach 311 who will connect them to family justice
centers. The services are free. They can walk in or make an appointment, regardless of their gender. Domestic violence disproportionately impacts women, but we know there are male victims and victims within the LGBTQ community. We serve everyone whether documented or not, regardless of income. Talk about the statistics of domestic violence. There were 283,000 calls made to the NYPD about domestic violence last year. It’s still an underreported crime. That’s why outreach is important. My job is ensure that victims continue to come forward. That can have a destabilizing im-

The MTA may be increasing fares and tolls once again. Not only is it planning to raise MetroCard prices, the MTA also wants to raise the price of city bridges, including both Rockaway bridges. The Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge to Brooklyn and Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge to Broad Channel currently cost $3.75 cash and the MTA is proposing to raise it to $4 for cars. EZ-Pass tolls may increase by 4 percent, so outside EZ-Pass users may pay $2.08 instead of $2.00 and those with a Rockaway resident EZ-Pass may pay $1.36 instead of the current $1.31 for the Marine Parkway Bridge. Rockaway Resident Tokens, which can be purchased in the cash lanes with a proper sticker, may increase from $1.79 to $1.86. The Cross Bay Bridge will remain free for Rockaway residents as long as there is funding to keep the rebate program going. The public can have a say on the proposals this month. A public hearing was held in Queens on December 3. There will be another on December 11 at Walt Whitman Theater at Brooklyn College (2900 Campus Road near Nostrand and Ave H) at 6 p.m. After hearing commentary, the MTA board will vote on the proposals in January and any changes will go into effect in May.

Promise To Fix Beach Not Kept The Beach is probably the greatest common denominator of all things Rockaway for the great people of the Rockaway peninsula. Most people who choose to live here are here because of our amazing free beaches and ocean access. I know I harp on the subject of erosion and groins more often than most. I guess some would say it’s more of an obsession. With constant reminders that our beaches erode at a greater pace than most other beaches on the Long Island seashore, I probably even drive some residents crazy! For the most part, however, it seems residents are pretty happy that my partner in crime, Eddy Pastore and I keep our eyes on the progress or lack there
of, on the efforts to end the vicious cycle of erosion which continually puts every resident in danger on the Rockaway peninsula, not to mention taking away our economic engine. November of 2014 was the projected completion date of the 2003 Rockaway beach Army Corps of Engineers(ACE) Reformulation study. The completion of this study was supposed to let ACE know how and what to do to prevent the erosion along the Rockaway peninsula and how to prevent water from inundating the bay side of our peninsula. After Sandy we were dazzled with promises by the ACE and our US Senator, Chuck Schumer. We

heard “This is a new game,” and “This time it’s different.” We heard that the study is completely funded and we will have hundreds of millions of dollars in federal dollars to FINALLY repair the beaches and the bay of the Rockaway peninsula for good. In March 2013 – nineteen months ago – Schumer said: “Today we’ve turned these projects, long a dream of coastal communities, into a reality. This funding will green light project-after-project that are vital to protecting these vulnerable communities from future floods.” Instead we get the same old crap. NOTHING! Another promise unkept. Another date missed! Ahem: Senator Schumer, it is now December 2014! On a positive note this is my fourth year in a row working with NYC Councilman Eric Ulrich’s staff on Participatory Budgeting (PB) under the leadership of Robby Schwack. Robby is helping to steer another great round of letting the people of the Rockaway peninsula decide on how the councilman will spend $1million of capitol expense money. Also joining in on the fun is my good friend and four year player in PB, the Rev. Eleni Mulrudis. Elemi has been a real trooper helping in the process of spreading the word of PB, especially to all those who live in Dayton Towers. The
Rev always makes sure that those living in Dayton are fully informed and receive their fair share of PB spending. To give a recommendation as to how you would like to see a million dollars of your taxes spent, make sure you look around for the PB boxes around town or call The Councilman’s office details.

Born and Reborn New Life Brings Wonder, Reminders By John Sica
I was visiting my friend Logan Michael this weekend. He’s not much of a talker, we just sat around on the couch with the Ranger game on the TV. He wasn’t paying attention to it, I was. Every time there was a great save I would jump a little and scream. This upset his mother, Liz, a little. Logan Michael didn’t even notice. I don’t think hockey is Logan’s game, although his uncle Brian is a great player. Logan has got long arms, more suited for volleyball which also runs in his family. I did notice him wearing a Green Bay Packer hat last week so I guess he’s a fan. Logan Michael is three weeks old. He was born on Veterans Day, 11/11, two weeks early, five pounds twelve ounces. Logan and his mother Liz are doing great. In this age of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, new born baby pictures and announcements are commonplace. After a while they are nice but easily passed over. When Hurricane Katrina tore up New Orleans it was a horrifying news item for a week but then most of America moved on and for
the most part forgot about it as it too was passed over. Until Sandy hit us. And while the rest of America passed over it after a week’s news cycle, it was our reality even to this day, more than two years later. The reason I bring that up is because Logan Michael is now my reality. Now and forever. So indulge me for a few minutes while I try to describe what all parents know. The beauty of a new born. I remember having my own children decades ago. I remember feeling a happiness and wonder that I never knew existed. Looking at a newborn, so tiny, helpless. So smooth and soft. When they open their eyes for the first time you can look
through those eyes with them, and see the crazy world we live in all over again for the first time. You can feel their confusion, and a new level of love makes you want to do everything in your power to make that crazy world a safe and beautiful place. Rockaway is a place that seems to have more than its share of births. One of the beauties of Rockaway in the spring when the weather starts to change is seeing all the kids out on their blocks playing in the streets and on the beaches. I always prefer walking or biking to the store myself, so life doesn’t pass by out a window so fast. You see and hear so much more as you travel slowly through
our little town. Ever since I was aware that I was becoming a grandfather, I’ve been traveling even slower and observing the beauty of our town even more. Working in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan shows me the contrast of Rockaway. I marvel at the amount of people, kids and adults alike who travel around Rockaway on bikes, skateboards, scooters and skates. While the whole world is catching up with bike lanes and scooters we’ve been traveling that way as far back as I can remember. Seeing things through a child’s eye makes us experience things all over again, that we’ve been taking for granted for years. A wave, a kite, a ballgame, a bird, a flower, the wind….. Logan Michael and thousands of other kids will be growing up in Rockaway for a long time. Take a look as they play ball, and surf, and skateboard or just sit on the stoop with their friends. And marvel at the miracle and help to make their world a great place.

It’s that time of the year again! Neponsit resident Joe Mure is screwing in the final light bulbs on his home and checking them twice as Rockaway’s Little North Pole is expected to light up this weekend, dazzling residents of all ages in its 19th year. On Saturday, December 6, thousands are expected to attend the annual lighting ceremony of the Little North Pole at 144-03 Neponsit Avenue. Whether seeing it for the first time or returning to see the new touches to the outstanding display, eyes will light up with delight when the countdown is complete and the home is illuminated with thousands of lights, inflatable decorations, moving train sets, animatronic characters in Santa’s Workshop and more. Starting the day after Halloween, Mure and his team of Santa’s little helpers, go to work to put together Rockaway’s largest holiday display. Although it takes many hours, dollars and a lot of hard work, Mure has two main reasons for bringing back the Little North Pole every year. “We do it to create a smile on every child’s face and to give them a memory of Christmas or the holiday season that will last the rest of their lives,” Mure said. Mure also uses the Little North Pole as an opportunity to raise money for a charity that is dear to his heart. Every year, the money raised goes towards the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, in hopes of finding a cure or better treatments for a disease that affects Mure’s own family. “We’ve stepped things up with JDRF over the years and there’s some really promising stuff happening in the field of diabetes,” Mure said. Through donations from last year, Mure says they were able to donate about $190,000 toward the cause. “Every penny we raise goes directly toward the charity,” he said. Aside from generous donations of time
from entertainers, food from local businesses, and toys from groups like the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, Mure pays for everything else out of pocket, including the electric bill for the display, which can cost thousands. Starting at 5 p.m., guests will be entertained with musical and dance performances throughout the night. Those at the event won’t go hungry. Expecting to feed 4,000 people, food and drinks are being donated by Ragtime Gourmet, Matteo’s, Vetro, and Lenny’s Clam Bar from Howard Beach, Jameson’s and Beach Bagels from Rockaway, Lucy’s Sausage, the Soup Nazi, Fort Meat Company, Applebees and more. The big man himself will be making an appearance, of course. Always arriving in style, Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and the elves will visit and will give every child in attendance an early Christmas toy. Mure expects Santa to give out more than 2,200 toys during the event. To help raise money for JDRF, there will be a raffle for an 18-month lease on a Mercedes Benz GLA-250 from Brooklyn Mercedes-Benz. Tickets are $20 and will be available at the ceremony, where the winner will be announced later in the evening. There will also be JDRF donation boxes outside of the home for the season, as well as a mailbox where kids can send letters to Santa. “Last year, we got a letter from a kid whose father had lost his job and they had no money for Christmas dinner, so we made sure we got some food over to their house,” Mure said. “We keep going to try to help in any way we can.” As we go to print, the forecast for Saturday isn’t looking so bright. In the event of rain, the lighting ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 7. Those who can’t make it to the ceremony will have the opportunity to see the Little North Pole throughout the holiday season. The lights will stay on until early January.

Build It Back Applications: Queens Leads By Bianca Fortis
There are currently 9,352 active Build it Back applications open from the borough of Queens – nearly half of the total 20,934 open throughout the city. Of those, 9,135 are single-family homes and 217 are multi-family units. Construction on seventy one single-family homes in Queens has been completed, according to Build it Back data that was last updated at the end of November. Construction has begun on another 289. Staten Island has had the most homes completed with 103. Brooklyn has had 47. Queens has received the highest number of reimbursement
checks for single-family homes with 531. Queens has two multifamily homes currently in construction, according to the data. During the last few months, the city has repeatedly touted the success of the Build it Back program, saying that it has made progress ever since the de Blasio administration worked to overhaul it earlier this year. In October, the administration set a goal of 1,000 construction starts and 1,500 reimbursement checks by December 31. According to the data, the city has hit 885 construction starts at 1,552 checks. Data about Build it Back and other Sandy programs is available at www1.nyc.gov/sandytracker.

Long Time Civic Leader Dies Far Rockaway resident Harvey Gordon died on Tuesday, December 2. Gordon was an active community member who served many years on Community Board 14, the Chamber of Commerce, the Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center Board, the Community Advisory Board of St. John’s Episcopal Hospital and he was the founder and president of the former Co-
alition for Far Rockaway. Gordon was the Executive Director of the Jewish Community Council of the Rockaway Peninsula for 14 years until 2010 and remained a consultant until 2012. Most recently, he worked as the Director of Safety and Security at Yeshiva Darchei Torah in Far Rockaway. A funeral service was held at Yeshiva Darchei Torah on Wednesday, December 3.
Comptroller: Thousands of School Computers Lost and Unused More than 1,800 computers were unaccounted for or missing entirely and nearly 400 laptops and tablets were found unpacked and unused in ten Department of Education locations, raising concerns that millions in computer equipment may be lost citywide, according to an audit of DOE’s inventory control over nearly $200 million in computer purchases released by New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer. “It is an insult to families who are desperate to access technology for their children to leave brand new computers and tablets unused in closets and storage facilities,” Stringer said. “If auditors can’t locate an average of 180 computers per DOE location, this may be just the tip of the iceberg. Every school should be prepared to use the devices they have and DOE should have a plan for where its com-
puter hardware can best be put to use. Taxpayer dollars, and our children’s education, are too important to take this technology for granted.” The audit examined how DOE maintained inventory controls over computer hardware purchased through two separate contracts with Apple and Lenovo. The contracts, entered into in September 2009 and July 2011 respectively, have been used to purchase over 211,000 pieces of computers and tablets worth more than $197 million as of September 2014. Auditors examined a sample of the computer and tablet inventory purchased from July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2013 for use at ten DOE sites – nine schools and one administrative building. None of the four Queens school included in the same were in Rockaway.

Not News: Rockaway Needs Better Transit By Bianca Fortis
I am sitting on a crowded A train, impatiently tapping my foot as the train slowly ambles its way toward Rockaway. It’s the second time today I’m making this trip from the mainland of Queens.
Suddenly the train comes to a halt somewhere over a bridge. The conductor announces that the emergency brakes activated and the train operator is investigating to see why. This is beginning to feel like some perverse joke. It’s nearly 6 p.m. and most of

my fellow riders just want to be home after a long day. I’m trying to get to the Knights of Columbus for a meeting. Some of the passengers quite literally look pained when the conductor announces, ten minutes after the train first stopped, that they still haven’t found a cause for the commotion. I have to remind myself that this is the sort of nonsense Rockaway residents deal with on a daily basis. For me, this is a new experience. Normally, I drive to and from my home in Ridgewood to my job as a reporter at the Rockaway Times. In New York City, having a car is considered a luxury, and it’s a privilege I am absolutely grateful to have. But it’s also often a necessity for a reporter, a job which, for me, requires darting around from one end of the peninsula to the other, often on a deadline. But an accident recently left my car undriveable, at least for a couple of weeks while it’s being repaired. In the meantime, I’ll be relying on public transportation. That usually means taking three different trains, two of which (the A and the S) move at a snail’s pace – just to get from one part of the borough to another. I do not envy those of you who must travel much further than I do. It’s no secret that transit options in Rockaway are essentially a joke. You know this. And I know it. I know it because it’s only common sense that a community seeking to rebuild itself after a traumatic event such as Hurricane Sandy needs adequate access to transportation.
I know it because, in the yearand-a-half that I’ve been working at weekly newspapers in Queens, I’ve spoken to many of you who just want to get to work or school in a reasonable amount of time. And I know it because I’ve experienced the frustration of trying to get around Queens, especially Rockaway, sans car. It sucks. It is my job to remain objective and fair, even while advocating on behalf of a – your – community. That means when I write about how poor the A train service is or the city’s decision to shut down the ferry, we at the Rockaway Times are also responsible for giving the city a chance to talk. As you know, the answers provided by city agencies – if they answer – are usually the same: city services are determined by the funds, or lack thereof, that the city has. To some extent, that makes sense. Basic math dictates that a city cannot survive, much less thrive, by operating in the red. But the city must and does determine its priorities. And what is clear to me, even as an outsider, is that the Rockaway peninsula is not held in the same regard as some of the other more affluent neighborhoods around the city. And overlooking this unique and beautiful community is an egregious error on the part of the city. But you knew that too. What I would like is take a step forward and humbly add my voice to the chorus of those already telling the city: Rockaway needs and deserves better transit options.

Crispy Skin Salmon By Sharon Feldman
Prep Time: Inactive Prep Time: Serves: Cook Time:
10 minutes 20 minutes 2 7 minutes
Ingredients: 2 (6-ounce) center-cut salmon fillet with skin, about 1-inch thick Kosher salt and freshly cracked pepper 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened and divided 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon whole tarragon leaves Directions: Sprinkle salmon with salt and pepper. Place skin side up and rub 1-1/2 tablespoons softened but-
ter all over the skin of the salmon. Transfer the salmon, buttered side up, to a sheet pan. Chill in fridge to firm the butter, about 20 minutes Preheat the broiler to high. Place the salmon about 5-inches from the heat source and cook until the skin is crispy and the fish is cooked through. 7 to 8 minutes. In a small saucepan over moderate heat, whisk together the remaining 1-1/2 tablespoons butter, lemon zest, lemon juice, mustard and tarragon leaves. Divide the sauce between 2 plates and 1 piece of salmon on top of each pool of sauce. **What makes this recipe really sing: this is the coolest way to get crispy skin on fish ever and the crispy skin is like a naturally salted and big flavored chip, so it’s the best part!
St. John’s Episcopal Hospital won an American Heart Association Award for implementing measures outlined by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association designed to treat patients suffering from a stroke. Those measures help hospital teams provide the most up-todate, research-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. St. John’s earned the Gold-Plus Quality Achievement through the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke program by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include the use of medications and risk-reduction therapies aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of patients who have had a stroke.
St. John’s also received the Association’s Target: Stroke Honor Roll for meeting stroke quality measures that reduce the time between hospital arrival and treatment with the clot-busting drug tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke. People who suffer a stroke who receive the drug within three hours of the onset of symptoms may recover quicker and are less likely to suffer severe disability. According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the number four cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.

Each day we are alive is a miracle, and that simply to breathe is a gift. We are given so many gifts throughout our lives and sometimes we don’t realize our innate gifts. What is your gift and do you share it with those who could benefit from your services? Perhaps it is being kind and compassionate to your neighbor. We all could use a friendly face when we come out of our houses. Not everyone feels the need to be kind to another being, maybe that is not your gift. You might have a special talent that you can teach to someone, such as playing a musical instrument or coaching a child in a sport. Maybe you are a nurse who cares for patients or oversees the staff to make sure they do the right thing. We don’t always know how we can be of service to another until we try it. Many of my neighbors have such beautiful gifts that I see them using every day. Some of them are retired and have begun to offer their services because they have a passion to help another person. It makes people feel good to share their talents with others. One of my neighbors is a retired gifted teacher who tutors children in their schoolwork. She is offering a wonderful service and this is one of her gifts, I am sure among others. I was in church recently and Father Pat had such an inspiring sermon about how we all have a gift and how important it is to use it and share it with others. We may be humble and keep our gifts hidden to protect them but we should use them while on earth. Our work
is to love one another and help each other to realize his/her potential. If you stay to yourself, close your doors and only focus on your own needs, your gifts will be wasted. When you find something you love, you will feel compelled to share this love with others. We don’t always know what our gifts are until we start using and sharing them. Fear sometimes prohibits us from using our gifts. Circumstances also can inhibit our ability to find our gifts and use them. What is your passion and how can you use it? My passion is teaching yoga to everyone and at any level. There is no question in my mind how healing and beneficial this practice is. I went through many trials and errors before I finally realized what I really wanted to do. Sharing what makes me happy, grounded, strong and healthy is a dream come true. Before I realized what my gift was, I had to work really hard and listen to my heart. My Mom taught me compassion, My Dad taught me spirituality. They were really good people who used their gifts with so many beings and taught by example. My Mom’s favorite quote to all of us, “Be Content and you will always Be Happy”. Simple and so true. Ask yourself, “What is my gift and are you using it to its full potential?” You might not know what your gift is today but one day it will come to you and don’t ignore it. May you be happy, content and healthy. Question/comment? Email us at BeWellBeHappy2@ g m a i l . com.

Everyone reading this article has one thing in common – food. No matter what type of relationship each of us has with our food, one thing is true, what you put in is what you get out. What you eat today will determine many factors about your life tomorrow; most importantly how long you will live. Time is our most treasured commodity and today we have the power to influence how much of that we will have in the end. I started a local organization called Rockaway CSA after many hours of reflecting on the above topic. Before I go into what a CSA is and how it can benefit you, I’d like to explain how the heck I got to this place. My interest in food started about 10 years ago with a book called Real Food by Nina Planck. However, the real turning point in my diet came from getting pregnant with my daughter. Like any new mother-tobe, the first thing I did was run to the library and find every book I could on how to be the best mother ever. Diet was a very important topic. The books that I gravitated towards all had the same theme, “Know where your food comes from.” This newly found education turned my trips to the supermarket into a living hell. As I started to read labels, specifically ingredients, I realized that if you take out the perimeter of the store, there was pretty much nothing that contained only ingredients that I recognized. (You mean my Skippy Natural Creamy Peanut Butter Spread that I grew up eating is called a spread because there are too many fillers to be considered just peanut butter??) When I finally learned how to eat whole foods, rather than packaged corn and soy boxes that only resemble food, I thought I had finally gotten a handle on eating healthy. That is, until I started to read about pes-
ticides, hormones and everything horrific you can imagine that was found inside the foods that are not labeled, like meat, produce, dairy and fish. My faith in large chain supermarkets and the government agencies that regulate them went right out the door. I wasn’t about to blindly trust a USDA Organic label either. I finally realized what the term, “Know where your food comes from,” really meant. Years ago people knew the farmer that grew their vegetables, the cows that provided them with meat and milk, and some even grew their own chickens. I wanted that for my family. Knowing that moving upstate and starting a farm was not a possibility, I decided to do the next best thing: get to know some farmers. That is how Rockaway CSA was born. CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. Communities looking for farm-fresh meat, produce, etc. cooperatively invest in a farmer that has the same growing principals as them. Oftentimes, the community pays for shares upfront to alleviate financial pressure at the beginning of a growing season and enable the farmer to determine how much to grow. Rockaway CSA contracts with farms that practice sustainable agriculture, meaning the farmers use only techniques that protect the environment, the community and the welfare of animals. We do not work with any farms that use GMOs, pesticides, hormones or factory farming methods. All farmers we work with welcome any questions our CSA members have about growing practices and are excited to have us as guests on their farms. This is a breath of fresh air in the Rockaway food desert. Future plans are for dairy and seafood shares! To stay updated on news, like us on Facebook @RockawayCSA. Any questions can be sent to rockawaycsa@gmail.com.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a $1.2 million donation to the city’s Public Schools Athletic League from New York Giants Chairman and Executive Vice President Steve Tisch. The donation, made to the Fund for Public Schools, will provide 53 new certified trainers and EMTs to oversee all contact football practices at schools with varsity and junior varsity teams. As a result, nearly 3,500 high school football players will have trained personnel at their practices, helping avoid injuries and ensuring a swift response if a player is hurt on the field. “Organized sports are great for kids, keeping them physically active, teaching them about teamwork, and helping build self-confidence. But as a parent, I too have
concerns about keeping kids safe. Having certified athletic trainers present on the sidelines will play a critical role in keeping young athletes active, healthy and on the playing field,” Steve Tisch, Chairman of the New York Giants said. There are 53 high schools with varsity and junior varsity football programs. Through the Steve Tisch Athletic Trainer Program, which began placing EMTs and trainers in schools this season, all 53 schools will receive a trainer or EMT for eight hours of contact practices weekly through the next football season. The PSAL provides doctors on the field at league games, but most schools do not have medical personnel available for contact practices, where there can still be a risk of concussion or other injury.
St. Francis Girls Join Layups4Lauren The St. Francis De Sales 5th Grade Girls CYO Basketball Team took their game to the next level by participating in the ‘Layups4Lauren’ Challenge. Lauren Hill, a basketball player at Mount St. Joseph University, Cincinnati, OH was diagnosed with DIPG, an inoperable, incurable and fatal form of cancer in November 2013. Lauren captured America’s heart when she insisted on playing even just one game with her college team. In order to raise awareness, Lauren created the ‘Layups4Lauren’ Challenge. Since her brain cancer often causes dizziness and forces her to shoot with her non-dominant hand, the challenge is to spin three times and make a layup with your non-dominant hand. Among those Hill challenged: U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, NBA star LeBron James, former NBA star Spud Webb, Bengals of-
fensive lineman Andrew Whitworth, Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton and San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon. All 11 teammates of the SFDS 5th grade Girls basketball team were videotaped taking the challenge and then sent the challenge on to others, including teams from St. Rose, Blessed Trinity and The Mary Louis Academy. The team sent a donation to ‘The Cure Starts Now’ Foundation in Lauren’s name. “Lauren Hill is here for all of us. She’s a soul engine, and all she wants to do for the rest of her life is remind us how good we have it, and that we need to make that goodness matter, for everyone.” A lesson well learned by this team of 11 girls and all those who continue to take the challenge. For more information about Lauren and her challenge, please visit LAYUP4LAUREN.ORG.

ONLY Novalis Tx System on LI
Recognized by the Commission on Cancer TM
“My lung cancer care team told me that I only needed four treatments.” We treat cancer with pinpoint precision. In fact, we’re the only hospital on Long Island with the innovative Novalis TxTM radiosurgery system. It’s a faster way to treat lung cancer – and it’s less invasive and more accurate than traditional radiation methods. No anesthesia. No pain. No scarring. Yes, it’s that good – and it’s only at South Nassau Communities Hospital.
