Little North Pole Lights Up Sunday By Katie McFadden

The Little North Pole is ready to make spirits bright for yet another holiday season. On Sunday, December 8, the winning home of ABC’s “Great Christmas Light Fight” will illuminate once again, wowing all who stop by to see it and raise money for a worthy cause—the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. For more than 20 years, Joe Mure’s Little North Pole (14403 Neponsit Ave) has been dazzling adults and children alike. Each year, with a show full of festive performances, a countdown from 10 and the hit of a button, the home in Neponsit comes to life with thousands of lights, sky-high toy soldiers, a lifelike carousel, animated figures that transport imaginations to Santa’s workshop and more. And this year, Mure says there’s an extra surprise in store for Sunday’s lighting. Last December, Rockaway’s

own Little North Pole was put on a national stage with ABC’s “Great Christmas Light Fight,” a televised competition of some of the best decorated holiday homes in the country. The Little North Pole episode was filmed during the lighting ceremony in 2017, and in 2018, when the episode aired, the lo-

cal home was declared the winner, earning them the coveted Great Christmas Light Fight trophy and a $50,000 prize, which Mure donated right to one of the reasons he lights the Little North Pole each year—in hopes of one day finding a cure for juvenile diabetes. Carrying on the spirit of last

year’s win, Mure says there’s a little something extra in store for Sunday’s lighting. “Winning was a great feeling, and we plan on going in to this year’s lighting with a little extra finesse to the display. We got something new that we’re gonna reveal the night of the lighting,” Mure said. “We’re looking forward to it.” Sunday’s lighting ceremony will have a little something for everyone. The pre-show featuring local school and dance groups, kicks off at 2 p.m. The main show, emceed by Goumba Johnny and Joe Causi, will kick off at 3:15 p.m. This will include a full lineup of professional performers, including Lime, the 1980s disco duo, known for hits like “Your Love” and “Angel Eyes.” The event will also include plenty of food donated by local businesses, and a special visit by the biggest celebrity of the night— Santa Claus—who will have Continued on page 4

toys for all of the kids in attendance. “We’re hoping for a great night,” Mure said. While the show is free, donations are encouraged the night of the lighting and throughout the holiday season. Mure has the electric bills and costs associated with the show covered out of pocket, so that all donations made go directly to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, a cause with deep meaning to the Mure family. Through doing the Little North Pole, Mure has been able to donate a few million dollars to the cause over the years. Last year, with the help of the $50K prize from the Great Christmas Light Fight, they were able to donate around $200,000. “We told them to send that money directly toward research for the cause,” Mure said. This year, Mure expects the new CEO of JDRF to attend this year’s ceremony to give some updates about how that money has helped the foundation and

continues to help. According to Mure, over the past few years, that money has helped with the development of a closed loop system, serving as an artificial pancreas. “That’s something that has been FDA approved and is something that people with juvenile diabetes are now wearing on their waistbands. It has changed how people live, tremendously. It keeps their blood sugar leveled and has made things much easier,” Mure said, adding that the improvements are ongoing. “I’ve been on the board of directors for JDRF for over 20 years and it appears as though they’ve found a way to prolong diabetes from coming out in a child by up to two years. That’s a pretty major breakthrough that’s happening as we speak. So there’s all these good things.” But he’s not done yet. “It’s not enough. We need to do more. We’re still looking, hoping and praying for a cure,” Mure said. That’s why this year, the show will go on. This year, Mure has been dealing with some health issues of his own, which has

impacted his ability to do some of the heavy lifting required to make the tremendous display perfect each year. But luckily, Mure has plenty of elves around that work to keep the magic of the Little North Pole alive. “I needed a lot of help this year. It’s not easy and it’s a lot of stress, but I have a lot of good friends that came out and took on some special roles and have been working around the clock. Richie Keane has been key. We got Tony O, who’s been out here every weekend. We got Johnny Lights, who got his nickname from the show. He stepped up and he and Jodi spent a tremendous amount of time revamping the garage this year. John Reinhardt has been working on a new addition to the house, which is part of the surprise. Tom Burke has been tremendous. And that’s just to name a few. We’ve got a lot more friends and neighbors that have been out there helping. It’s been a challenge to bring the Little North Pole together this year, but we’re not going anywhere,” Mure said.

The Rockaway Times That motivation to keep it going comes from frequent reminders that there’s more to be done. “A number of times throughout the year, I get phone calls from parents of little children who have just been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. And it breaks my heart to hear the fear in their voices and the uncertainty of how life is going to be for their kids. And I do my best to sit down and educate and help them. I help with doctors, things they can do, and it’s just terrible. It’s one of the worst things that can happen to a parent, when their kid is diagnosed with some sort of disease,” Mure said. “So we want to make sure that we try and find a way to stop it from happening.” So on Sunday, the show will go on. The Little North Pole will light again, with Santa, and surprises and smiles across the faces of all who come to enjoy it. To help make it a success, donations are encouraged. The Gravity Of Ignorance I believe the Earth is round or at least spherical, so I’m not a flat-earther. Though I think if you get to the end of Far Rockaway, you might fall off the planet. But I digress. Whenever I want to get people screaming at me, I show them how dumb I am. They start off patiently trying to tell me why people in the Southern Hemisphere aren’t upside down. If the world is shaped like a basketball and they’re on the bottom, shouldn’t they be

upside down? Gravity keeps them glued to their Earth but they’re upside down, right? They start telling me it’s relative and in space, north doesn’t mean up, and south doesn’t mean down. As my face looks more and more befuddled, their face turns redder and redder. They look like they might hit me when I wonder aloud how the water from the oceans doesn’t just spill out. Is gravity that strong? They try telling me the

Earth turns. Yeah, I get that. It turns sideways. And speaking of sideways, I still think people at the equator are standing sideways. They’re perpendicular people. With all that gravity, I don’t how they stand. They should really be pulled to the Earth and would be better off just lying on their side. When I say this with a straight face, I put myself in danger. Educated people start looking around for weapons to hit me with. They’re smart people but not smart enough to get me to understand, they’d rather just hit me. I went to a story on the NASA website and the first sentence said, “in space there is no up or down.� So, let me ask. If I’m on the moon and I look at the earth, it looks round. With a super-duper telescope I would prove that nobody is walking upright. Except for those standing at the north pole. My educated friends give up and tell me to watch a science show. Which I do. But I get dis-

tracted because it’s so damn dark so damn early and I check online to find out when sunset is in New York. It’s 4:29 p.m. and I see that sunrise occurred at 7:04 a.m. I wonder what it’s like down South a bit and see that Charleston, South Carolina has its sunset at 5:13 p.m., just about 45 minutes later. I get that the further you move westward in a time zone, the later things happen. But science gets me again. I figure that since Charleston’s sunset is 5:13, they must have a later sunrise. Right? No! Sunrise there is 7:07. Just three minutes later than here. They have 40 more minutes of sunlight than we do. Don’t check my math, that’s for another column. It seems that Earth's orbit and tilt factor in and blah, blah, blah. Don’t get me started on tilting. Anyway, no surprise, we’re in the dark more than others; me more than most. And moral of the story—if you want to get mad, try to explain science to me.

Backing a Brother in Blue By Katie McFadden

A boy in blue could use some reminders that he’s not alone. Recently, a story about an NYPD officer who has fallen on hard times, has been making the rounds on social media, as he could use all the support he can get. An NYPD Police Officer named Mike Vinitsky who worked at the 71st Precinct in Brooklyn has been impacted by a number of health issues. In 2007, as Vinitsky was guarding a prisoner at a hospital, the prisoner got his hands on a metal post from a hospital bed and struck the officer in the head, causing serious injuries. Those injuries led to Vinitsky being forced to retire in 2010. As if that wasn’t bad enough, in July of this year, Vinitsky suffered a heart attack. Following the heart attack, it was discovered that Vinitsky has ALS (Lou Gehrigs Disease). He is now at Coney Island Hospital, on a feeding tube and tracheostomy

and unable to speak. He is only able to communicate with use of a computer system. The only family that Vinitsky has is his 80-year-old mother, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, so she is unable to visit him often, leaving Vinitsky effectively—alone. However, that started to change a few weeks ago when members of the NYPD

started to learn about his story. As word spreads, he’s getting more and more visits from fellow brothers and sisters in blue. Even local officers, including some retirees and an officer from the 101st Precinct have reached out to Vinitsky directly or visited him. As the holidays approach, friends of the officer are asking

people to help lift his spirits even more by sending him a holiday card or note wishing him well or thanking him for his service as an officer, so he knows that he’s not alone. They can be sent to Mike Vinitsky, C/O Coney Island Hospital, 2601 Ocean Parkway Rm. 430B, Brooklyn, NY 11235. Additionally, Vinitsky can use some financial help. He is forced to have 24-hour health aides assigned to him and is covering this and medical costs himself. To help cover the costs, friends have set up a GoFundMe account for him. Search “Mikhail Vinitsky” on GoFundMe.com to find the page to donate. As we go to press, more than $19,000 has been raised so far. A group to share messages of support and to share updates on Vinitsky has also been set up on Facebook. Search “Mike Vinitsky Support Group” on Facebook.com to see updates. Although it’s not easy for him to respond, Vinitsky says he reads all of the messages on the page.

Over a four-week period this time last year, there was one car reported stolen. This year, the number is 7. That’s a 600 percent increase. Remember to lock your doors! ***** So Alice Ostrander dropped her car key, one of those expensive ones with a chip, in the muni-parking lot on Beach 116th Street. She looked around, couldn’t find it but then took a chance and asked the transit police if a key had been found. Yep. Someone, who didn’t leave a name, found it and gave it to the police. New Exhibit at Gateway Our National Parks, an exhibit of paintings by Jayne Holsinger, will open on December 8. The exhibit opening and reception will be from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Broad Channel. The opening reception is free and open to the public. This exhibit will be on display for two months. Holsinger, who will be at the reception, has been painting the national parks as an ongoing theme and series since 2010. Her scenes are based on photographic images based on a trove of vacation photo albums and slides which she inherited from her grandparents in 2008. Her grandfather was an amateur photographer, who documented travel through the continental 49 United States by visiting national parks. Holsinger is known for her

On Thanksgiving Day, November 28, while many of us were feasting on turkey and watching football, Far Rockaway native Curtis Turney-Rentas and his band of merry volunteers with the Far Rock National Pan Hellenic Council were celebrating by feeding all at their Second Annual Operation Thanksgiving Service at Mott Avenue train station. While the event was a resounding success, with over 180 plates given out, for the Greek lettered Alpha Phi Alpha college grad, giving back does not stop there. He has made it his life’s mission to uplift the community he was born and raised in—Far Rock. When asked about his inspiration to host the Thanksgiving giveaway event, Turney-Rentas, a young man just starting out, said, “I was always big on bringing positive change to my community, seeing what’s needed, especially for the youth. I’m big on trying to bring

goods, including cupcakes, cookies and other sweet treats generously donated by supporters, were given out. “My mom and aunt were also the chefs last year, and this year, they were more than happy to put in the work to make this a special day for the community. People at the train station were grateful not just for the meal, but to be among friendly faces. Though we made this special Thanksgiving meal for the homeless and others in need, anybody who came off the train looking for a hot plate, got one. Plus we had photographer, V. Lens, and videographer, Borelone Films, capture the memorable moments of the day,” Turney-Rentas said. As for founding the FRNPHC, Turney-Rentas said he wanted to bring Greek representation here in Rockaway. “Even though I already knew so many Greeks in Far Rockaway, I thought it was time to come together and uplift our community. A lot of Greek organizations are founded on

So what just started as a chat between all the Greeks in Far Rock through the National Pan Hellenic Council, (a collaborative organization of nine historically African American, international Greek lettered fraternities and sororities), came together and we started planning events. Then next thing we know, though I hate to boast, we are one of the hottest organizations out there right now putting in the grind and work for our community. What I especially love about our group is that it’s just natural and done effortlessly, especially being from Far Rockaway. Giving back to our community is very peer positive. We don’t do it for any gain or fame, it’s just about us giving back love to Far Rock,” he said. Turney-Rentas founded FRNPHC on May 10 of this year, and already has amassed 45 members, both men and women. This summer, they banded together to host a back-to-school cookout, a basketball tournament, and A Clean My City Initiative, where they cleaned under the

Turney-Rentas shared, “It definitely was a productive summer for us, and now we are trying to get into the schools with a mentoring program by engaging with the youth directly. We also have a Christmas Toy Drive coming up on December 22. Details will soon be announced.” So Turney-Rentas, an alumni of local schools, P.S./M.S. 43, Frederick Douglas Academy VI H.S. on the Far Rockaway Educational Campus, and a graduate with a bachelor of science in Information Technology from Delaware State University, has made it his mission to help others his life’s vocation. Currently he has two jobs, is lead mentor at nonprofit, Sheltering Arms, and is a college assistant at York College. Plus, he is a budding entrepreneur, who founded his own graphic and apparel design business, CT3 Designs, while still in college. Though proud proud of what he and the FRNPHC have been able to accomplish, the young mover and shaker says he’s also grateful to the communi-

To Our Armed Forces: Merry Christmas From Morgan Allen By Katie McFadden

A group of new recruits are being deployed to the Middle East with one mission—to spread Christmas cheer to military members spending the holidays away from home. A home in Broad Channel has been transformed into Santa’s workshop, where nine-year-old Morgan Allen is hard at work playing Special Ops Santa. The P.S. 47 fifth-grader is putting in some extra work between school and homework, to make sure that deployed members of the U.S. Airforce and Marines have themselves a merry little Christmas this year. Over the summer, this crafty kid decided to put her skills to work by starting a business making personalized gifts, from t-shirts to wine glasses and tote bags, calling it Morgan’s Marvelous Crafts. This holiday season, she added elves to her inventory, personalizing red and green elves with the names requested by those who place orders. The adorable holiday gift goes for just $5, so it’s no wonder orders have been pouring in from friends, family, neighbors and others who’ve come across her Morgan’s Marvelous Crafts Facebook page. When the family of her cousin, Sean, an Airman for the U.S. Airforce, placed an order, she decided to give Sean’s elf a special touch by adding the U.S. Airforce symbol to its hat, making for the perfect gift for his return from a recent two-month deployment. “He loved it,” Allen said. Seeing how happy it made her cousin, Allen had an even bigger idea for the little elves. Why not put smiles on the faces of more military members? Allen went back to the workshop. Now she has 100 elves, personalized with U.S. Airforce symbols, patiently waiting to deploy to the Middle East to bring some Christmas cheer to Airmen who will be away from their families this Christmas. But why stop there? She’s also making 100 more with the U.S. Marines symbol on their hats to send to Marines. “I thought it would be nice for

them to know that we’re thinking of them over the holiday season since they can’t be with their families. My Pop Pop was a Marine in Vietnam and I thought it would be nice to make some for the Marines as well as the Airmen. They’re out there keeping us safe and it’s important for them to know that we’re thankful for them,” Allen said. That message will be even more clear by something extra special inside the package of elves. Along with her idea, Allen thought it would be nice to get her schoolmates involved. She gave a letter to her principal at P.S. 47, asking if kids in the school could make personalized cards and notes to thank the soldiers this holiday season. “I wanted to get my classmates involved because I thought it would be nice to have little notes that said we were thinking of them over the holidays,” Allen said. The response was overwhelming. “Thank You for protecting our country. God bless you. Have a Happy Holidays” says one card. “You are Strong. You are Brave. You have Courage every day you go out and fight for us. So, this is for you to wish you a Merry Christmas,” says another. The similar words of encouragement and thanks are seen throughout the colorful cards that have drawings of flags, Christmas trees and

more. “Almost my whole school gave me cards,” Allen said. “I’m happy that they all made them for the people in the military because it shows that everyone, not just a couple people, are thinking of them.” Allen is collecting the cards and putting the finishing touches on her elves through Thursday, December 5, which she’ll pack in a box that she’s personally decorating, to be delivered to the troops. The box will go to her cousin, Sean, who will bring it to his base in New Jersey, to send on a plane with fellow Airmen who are being deployed to the Middle East

next week. However, the Marine elves will be heading to another destination. “A friend of mine has a Marine friend deployed in Japan so we’re waiting for the address to hopefully send them out by next Friday, so they get them before the holidays,” Erica Allen, Morgan’s mother said. Morgan hopes her elves bring a special message to those who

are deployed when they receive them. “I hope that they’re happy and grateful that people, even though they don’t know them and most of them are strangers, still care for them and we’re thankful that they’re helping to protect our country,” she said. Morgan’s efforts are something that would make any parent beam. “I’m so outrageously proud of her,” Erica Allen said. “She is so considerate and thoughtful. We had talked about giving back around the holidays. My dad was a Marine. My husband was in the Army. Her great grandpa was in the Army, and now her cousin is an Airman, so she’s always been very appreciative of our armed forces and I’m so proud that she’s taking her time to do this.” In addition to making the military elves, Allen is continuing to take and fulfill orders for personalized gift elves. The money that she’s raised has made it possible to purchase the additional elves for the military members. “I think it’s pretty awesome for a nine-year-old kid to not only be willing to give up some of that profit, but to be excited about doing it,” Erica Allen said. Since the effort requires a lot of hard work, Morgan has recruited some elves of her own to help, including her parents, her older brother, Daniel, her little sister, Sydney, and her friend, Ava. Together, they’ve turned it into a family-fun activity. “My whole house is inundated with elves,” Erica Allen said. “We all wear elf ears and listen to Christmas music while we make the elves, while Morgan wears a Santa hat, because she’s in charge." While the effort will continue, Morgan Allen will be hanging up her Santa hat to take a break in a few weeks. After all, she has another big occasion to prepare for before Santa arrives—she’ll be turning 10 on December 17. Suspect Pleads Guilty to Fatal Ice Pick Stabbing A 55-year-old Brooklyn man has admitted to fatally stabbing a Far Rockaway man with an ice pick in 2017. On Tuesday, December 3, on the eve of his trial, Norbert Williams of Bed Stuy, pled guilty to manslaughter for brutally stabbing 47-year-old Joseph Smart of Far Rockaway, according to the Queens District Attorney’s office. . The defendant asked for the victim’s help, got him into the building’s stairwell and then attacked him with an ice pick at around 1:30 a.m. on June 18, 2017. According to the charges, at approximately 1:30 a.m. on June 18, 2017, Williams knocked on the door of Joseph Smart’s apartment in Far Rockaway. The defendant told the victim he needed his help with a couple of guys who were bothering him and Smart rushed to his aid. They entered the stairwell of the building, where Williams suddenly attacked Smart. The victim sus-

tained roughly 30 wounds to his upper body, including a deep puncture wound to his back that was so forceful, a piece of the ice pick broke off and was stuck in the victim’s spine. “Early one morning, the defendant asked the victim to help him out and once inside the apartment building’s stairwell, he pounced on the man with an ice pick,” Acting District Attorney Ryan said. “The victim was stabbed dozens of times in the head, neck, back and torso. This was a rage-induced stabbing frenzy that is wholly unacceptable. The defendant has now admitted to this heinous crime and is facing a lengthy term of imprisonment when sentenced.” Queens Supreme Court Justice Kenneth C. Holder set sentencing for January 28, 2020, and indicated he will order Williams to prison for 24 years, to be followed by five years’ post release supervision.

About two or three years ago, they erected those wooden structures around all the trees in the median of Beach Channel Drive at 114th to 116th Streets, leading us to believe they would repave soon. It never happened and the unsightly wood is still up. They also left the ugly orange netting up around the other plants in the median and never bothered to remove it, so it is simply a part of our landscape. There’s a very good chance, you may have come across Belle Harbor resident Cheryl Scanlan’s photos, whether it be on social media or seeing her numerous exhibits in the community and vendor markets. What’s most profound about the maverick photographer’s work is her simplicity in capturing what makes Rockaway such a special place—whether it be a mural on a wall or a raindrop. In the following Q&A, we give a special spotlight on the talented woman, who prefers to hide from the limelight, yet goes beyond the lens to put the peninsula in the spotlight. RT: How long have you lived in Rockaway? CS: I have lived in Rockaway since 1997. Scuba diving and the ocean are what brought me here.

RT: Scuba diving? CS: In 1996, my family started coming out here to scuba dive. There used to be a scuba diving site at Beach 8th Street, where there’s a tropical current at the end of the summer into the beginning of fall. It was so amazing because we would see baby tropical fish and other sea life. Before the city took that property and built an apartment building, there were showers and a food stand. It was set up for scuba diving, and was absolutely fantastic. After that, my husband, Bill, and I just fell in love with much out here, maybe just a lot of people may have never noticed. Rockaway. RT: A lot of people are blown away by your photos. How do you feel about the reception you’ve received? CS: I’m just so appreciative and blessed that I bring people happiness. My photos make me happy. That’s why I take them and if I can share them with someone else, and it reminds them of a special moment, I feel blessed. RT: What exhibits has your work been featured in? CS: I’ve exhibited a few times at the Rockaway Artists Alliance and local cafe, Rockaway Roasters. I also participated in various local vendor events with the Rockaway Business Alliance on the boardwalk and the ferry. RT: If someone wants to purchase one of your photos, how do they go about it? One Crazy Commute THE NIGHT THE A TRAIN FOUND JESUS By Katie McFadden

Ok, I must admit, working in Rockaway, I don’t have to take the subway often (Thank God!). But every now and then it’s inevitable. As I was attending an event at Madison Square Garden on a Monday night last month, the A train was my best bet. And boy, what an adventure it was. The ride there was seemingly uneventful until about the last five minutes when a man got on with a suitcase. He immediately said that he was handicapped, and although it wasn’t visible, my boyfriend and I gave up our seat to him. Good karma, right? Or simply, the right thing to do. That’s why I was surprised when that same man refused to let another woman, who claimed to be

handicapped, sit down next to him. “I’m not the only person on the train you can ask,” he says. Another life lesson… that not everyone has common decency, I guess. But what happened on the way back could’ve been an episode of the Twilight Zone. At least that’s what it felt like at 11 p.m. My boyfriend and I were waiting for the A train, unfortunately running locally during the late-night hours, when a man, draped in an Israeli flag, and carrying a full-blown eight-foot wooden cross, enters the platform. Curiosity ensued, but not enough for me to get too close. But we watched as one brave soul did approach and ask what his deal was, and the man explained that he was a Christian, and he began to preach. Few others

Imaging The use of computed tomography (CT scans), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and ultrasound increased dramatically in the U.S. between 2000 and 2006. Among Medicare beneficiaries, the increase was higher than any other physician-provided services. Steep increases in the rates of these imaging studies can be attributed to technical improvements, physician and patient demand, and strong financial incentives (to those providing the imaging services). Medical imaging contributes to accurate disease diagnosis and improved treatments, but there are down sides to increased rates of imaging, and they include increased

patient costs and patient harms such as overdiagnosis, incidental findings, increased patient anxiety, and radiation exposure (with CT). It has been estimated that 30 percent or more of imaging studies are unnecessary, costing approximately $30 billion in the U.S. alone. In a recent study that compared the U.S. with 10 other developed countries, the U.S. ranked one or two in the number of CT and MRI studies done per 1000 individuals. Recently, a large study was published that examined medical imaging rates in the U.S. and Ontario, Canada from 2000 to 2016. It assessed changes in the rates of imaging among individuals

across diverse integrated healthcare systems by country, health system, and patient demographic factors. Not surprisingly, the use of CT, MRI, and ultrasound in seven integrated healthcare systems in the U.S. and Canada has continued to rise in recent years. Although the rates of increase were highest from 2000 to 2006, the rates continued to rise, albeit more slowly, from 2006 to 2016 (from 1 to 5 percent annually). The notable exception was for pediatric CT scans, which declined since 2006, most likely due to pediatricians’ concerns of exposing children to ionizing radiation. The data suggested that imaging rates were lower in healthcare systems that had stronger incentives to constrain imaging (and thereby keep costs lower). The data from this and other studies conform to my experience and that of many of my colleagues. For example, someone on straight Medicare (meaning not a member of a Medicare advantage plan) does not require any pre-authorization or prior approval in order to have an MRI or CT scan performed. The

On the other hand, a member of a Medicare advantage plan or most other commercial plans (i.e. EmblemHealth, HealthCare Partners) requires pre-authorization before an MRI or CT can be performed as an outpatient (in a non-emergency situation). Because these plans are in business to turn a profit, they make the prior approval process very difficult, especially for primary care practitioners. Many of these plans also offer financial incentives to physicians who order the least number of tests, thereby keeping costs low. The prior approval process is lengthy and tedious, and very often the person who processes the prior approval request has little to no clinical experience and is not a healthcare professional. It is for this reason and others that many primary care providers are opting for early retirement or taking non-clinical positions. If nothing changes, primary care providers will be just a memory, replaced by large multi-specialty groups with large staffs and no personality. Light In The Darkness As we enter into December, it is a time of darkness with winter and longer days. At the same time, we celebrate the miracle of turning darkness into light, winter solstice. This is a season of blessings when darkness births light. The Jews celebrate Hanukkah, the miracle of Light when due to a war, the oil lamp in the Temple was about to go out and miraculously, it continued to burn for eight days until new oil was found. Christians celebrate the same miracle of Light with Jesus’ birth. There is much to celebrate in the season of light!

At Ocean Bliss Yoga, we chose the focus to be on contentment and forward folding in poses helping us to go inward and be happy with what we have in our present life. December can be a stressful month for many reasons, so perhaps knowing we already have everything we need, will help. So often we lose focus on why we celebrate these holidays. Perhaps, this year the focus could be on spending quality time with the ones you love. Be happy with what you have and give the gift of your presence. The practice of forward folds allows you to go deep inside,

finding peace and quiet. Invite this darkness into your wellbeing. Without darkness, there would be no light. The definition of contentment is: “an emotional state of satisfaction that can be seen as a mental state, maybe drawn from being at ease in one’s situation, body and mind. Contentment could be a state of having accepted one’s situation and is a milder and more tentative form of happiness.” Is it possible to be content when you are not happy or healthy? Is acceptance part of this equation? Can we accept who we are, what we are doing and be content with who we already are? Sometimes we are striving for more and yet we have all that we need. As humans, we are always trying to improve our status no matter how happy we are. We are goal oriented and often striving to better ourselves. “Santosha invites us into contentment by taking refuge in a calm center, opening our hearts in GRATITUDE for what we do have and practicing the paradox of not seeking.”- Deborah Adele. If we are content, we are happy.

If we are full of gratitude for this life, we will be content and happy. You cannot be happy if you are not content. You will not find contentment in life without gratitude. Here are some keys to the success of being content in life: Count your blessings. Take time to really appreciate this life. Catch the sunrise or sunset, go for a walk on a winter day (when there is no wind!), hug a person, take a few centering breaths, smile at someone that could use some positive energy, learn to enjoy the simple things in life such as going out to dinner with friends, catching a show, taking a yoga class or fitness class together. Simply learning to enjoy what we already have. “Happiness is self-contentedness.” My mom, Mary Timlin, was way beyond her years when she said to each and every one of us: “Be content and you will always be happy.” It took a long time for me to truly embrace this mantra but it’s beginning to settle into my bones. I hope you can find contentment and happiness. It’s a choice you can freely choose. I choose to be happy even on dark days.

Continued from Page 25 Next enters a woman, who claims to be a domestic violence victim, asking for money. She makes her rounds and reaches Jesus, who pulls out a tambourine, and tells the woman to take it and sell it for money. She graciously accepts the unique gift, and praises God’s love. At this point, I’m thinking how sweet and symbolic it was, that a man dressed like Jesus, would give everything he had to the less fortunate. Meanwhile, my law enforcement boyfriend’s first thoughts were that Jesus was giving his belongings away because he may have been suicidal. As Jesus sat with a dead look on his face after the interactions, I couldn’t help but think, maybe boyfriend right. At this point, I’m having a moral dilemma of whether or not I want to approach the man and ask if he’s okay. That

is, until a duo of young college students enter the train with a violin and cello in tow. They play a quick tune before they reach Jesus, where they appropriately choose to perform “Hallelujah.” Apparently, Jesus got a kick out of this, as he pulled out his only item left, a cellphone, but not to give it away. He starts recording. For some reason, the whole scene reminded me of the scene in the movie, Titanic, where the string band starts playing on the deck as the ship is going down. I tell my boyfriend this and about a minute later, it happens. They break out with “Nearer My God to Thee,” the song played during that exact scene from Titanic. At that point, I lose it. I don’t know if delirium set in from being overtired, or if it was just the hilarity of the entire situation, but I burst out laughing and couldn’t stop. I paused for a second to tell my boyfriend, “The A train is going down. Women and children first.” And I laugh

and laugh. I’m laughing uncontrollably when the string duo gets off and a rapper enters the stage, I mean, subway car. He sits near us and starts rapping out loud, but I guess I looked like the crazy person at that point, laughing for no apparent reason, so he chose to move. Instead, he sits right across from Jesus. Jesus confronts him and says something along the lines of “Jesus died for you, what are you doing with your life?” At this point it starts to get a little loud and I’m now at peace with my decision to not get too close earlier. I’m afraid all hell is going to break loose, but whatever the rapper confessed, was enough for Jesus to say, “I respect that.” About two stops later, our A Train ride finally comes to an end. Jesus remained, on his way to Lefferts Boulevard, or God knows where. I may never know exactly what A Train Jesus was about, but one thing is for sure, that was a bizarre train ride, even

I shared this story with friends who immediately asked, “you sure you didn’t ingest shrooms?” Alas, no drugs were involved in the making of this event, at least, on my part. But it served as another reminder of why I don’t take the A train often, or why maybe, I should start. Maybe this I one of those, “you had to be there” stories to appreciate it. But, I'll share this story in the hopes that others may be brave enough to share their own out-ofthe-ordinary A train experience, or on any other means of public transportation to or from Rockaway. The long commute is hard on many of us. Let’s make it a little lighter by sharing unique experiences, and I don’t mean the usual gripes of disrupted service. Beat Self-Defeat Dear Enchantress, How do you stop doing things that are self-defeating? Confidentially, my boyfriend says he does this at professionally important times. I know it’s important for him to help himself, but he complains to me, and I see how he’s self-sabotaging and it’s not only hard to watch, his feeling bad, impacts me and our life together. Got any suggestions? Dear Sally Support, Big question. I like it, and many of my clients have this, with different details, but how to help a partner who is self-sabotaging is a challenge.

Especially if you live together, you might be watching him actually take the self-defeating actions, and it might be hard to not speak to it, which may add to the stress. It’s true, it’s best if he looks for help or support on his own. If that is not happening, here are some communication tips to use in a stressfree moment. In this stress-free moment, you can begin by getting consent to open this conversation: “Can I ask you a question about a work/business something you shared that stuck with me?” As in, “is now a good time for you?” (You’ll feel the “perfect” time in your body). It should

be a moment when there is no time pressure for anything. Next, I would recommend taking your questions and dialogue slowly. This is not advice-giving, or here’s what I think... If he says, “yes,” refer to that original conversation when he shared about being self-defeating at professionally important times. “Remember when you shared about.... well, it stuck with me, and because I love and care about you, I see what seems like stress for you about this.” Then pause and tune in to what that’s like for him to receive. Then to close, tell him, “This isn’t easy for me to bring up,

because I think it must be hard for you... and I’d like to know if there is any way that you know of that I can support you to get support?” It’s optional and if you sense he is open, you can share, “I have a couple of ideas, and I would love to share them when you are ready to hear.” So overall: 1. Take this slow; 2. Make no demands; 3. Stay open and curious as to where he is on receiving support from you, or from any of the ideas you have. Fuggedaboutit!!!! By Lou Pastina

The recently married mermaid gave me a gift not long ago that I got to use this past week: a NYC Gangster Mob Tour! And let me tell you, it was loads of fun, a lot of walking (which I love) and nobody got whacked (which is too bad!). The tour was attended by about 12 people, almost all from out of town, and so the senior mermaid and I, and two friends were the only native New Yorkers on the tour. But we didn’t

care as this is the greatest city in the world, so why not be a tourist every now and again. The tour began at Petrosino Park between Kenmare and Lafayette Streets, just up the block from the old police headquarters on Centre Street. It started with a talk about the Sicilian who ultimately became one of NYC’s best early detectives, and the story ended with New York’s finest traveling to Palermo, Italy to track down a bad guy, but instead was mur-

dered there because of a slip of the tongue here in the U.S. by the commissioner. We walked down Kenmare Street, which is a broken down three blocks of a street west of the Bowery coming down from the Williamsburg Bridge. You would never know it, but our tour guide described how over 300 people were murdered on that tiny strip literally four blocks from the police station. The street was lined with ginmills, brothels, and gambling establishments all owned and run by not only Italian mobsters, but their Jewish partners too.

As we made a left on to Mulberry Street and walked toward old St. Pat’s Cathedral, we heard names that we are all familiar with like: Meyer Lansky, Lucky Luciano, Arnold Rothstein, Frank Costello, Albert Anastasia and Joe Colombo. The stories are all the same, the old guard gets a little too comfortable, and the young rambunctious guys want to take over the turf. We’ve seen it in the Godfather, but these are the streets where it actually happened. As we got up further into what is now known as Nolita (North Little Italy), we got into John Gotti’s neighborhood and his club. And other names popped up, like, Paulie Castellano, who got whacked outside of Sparks Steak House in midtown; and Joey Gallo, who got it at Umberto’s right where we were standing. Interestingly, Umberto’s is no longer in the same location as when Joey took a few to the head, it’s now in the middle of the block on Mulberry. Continued on page 31

Rockaway Native Composer to Debut Opera Composer Alex Weiser, a Rockaway native, who was first profiled in The Rockaway Times in May 2016 for founding the concert series, Kettle Corn Music, is working on his next project—State of the Jews, a new opera debuting at the 14th Street Y in Manhattan this week. Weiser has composed the music with libretto Ben Kaplan for this historical drama, which will run from Thursday, December 5 through Sunday, December 8. Directed by Mary Birnbaum, "State of the Jews" is a historical drama about the charismatic and controversial Austro-Hungarian Jewish journalist Theodor Herzl (18601904) in the last year of his life as his efforts to secure a Jewish homeland become increasingly desperate. The true but largely unknown story of Theodor’s conflicted relationship with his wife, Julie Herzl, and the toll his political views and activities took on their family life is interwoven throughout, creating a counterpoint against the more well-known public portions of the story. Baritone Mario Diaz-Moresco will sing the role of Theodor Herzl and Mezzo-Soprano Kristin Gornstein the role of Julie Herzl. Tenor Alex Mansoori, Bass-Baritone Adrian Rosas, and the C4 choir complete the cast. The opera will be performed with a seven-piece instrumental ensemble led by pianist Lee Dionne, with lighting by Bessie Award winner Kryssy Wright, and costumes by Amy MacDonald.

Developed through the LABA: A Laboratory for Jewish Culture fellowship in 2018, this run marks the first complete performances of "State of the Jews" which has been workshopped over the last two years. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on December 5, 6 and 7, and at 1 p.m. on December 8. The theater is located at 344 East 14th Street in Manhattan. The 90-minute opera includes one intermission. Oh, Beach 116th Street Christmas Tree Story and Photos by Katie McFadden

Beach 116th Street is looking merry and bright. On Saturday, November 30, crowds gathered on the commercial strip for the annual ceremony to light the Beach 116th Street Christmas tree. Once again, Democratic District Leader Lew Simon, Kathleen Lalsie, and Liz Hanna spearheaded the effort to keep Christmas alive on Beach 116th Street at the annual lighting ceremony. Earlier in the week, with the help of Mazzone Hardware, the large tree was brought to the median near the firehouse, where the community gathered for the lighting on Saturday. The ceremony was held a bit earlier this

year in hopes that the weather would be warm and draw a good crowd, which turned out to be a good plan for the clearskied evening. The crowds were also kept warm with plenty of goodies, with food donates for Ciro’s pizza and Last Stop, and hot chocolate provided by House on the Rock Church. DJ Matt Finely of Rockawaves DJ played some holiday hits to get the crowd ready. The ceremony then began with a prayer led by Dr. Nancy Gahles, who blessed the tree, which was then lit after a countdown from 10. Pastor Garry Patrylo, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato and Councilman Donovan Richards then gave a few words, wishing everyone a happy holiday season. The crowds were then entertained

with several Christmas carols by local youth groups. The P.S. 114 Chorus performed hits like “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree," while the Rehoboth Church Choir performed “Silent Night” and Scholars’ Academy finished off the show with “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” which was perfect as the big man in the red suit himself showed up shortly after to take photos with all of the kids. Beach 116th Street will continue the festive fun on Sunday, December 22 for the annual Community Hanukkah Menorah Lighting. The ceremony, which kicks off at 3:45 p.m., will feature singing, hot chocolate, jelly donuts, chocolate gelt and more as the menorah is lit for Hanukkah.

The RKO Strand Movie Theater was opened in 1919. It was located on Beach 20th Street and Cornaga Avenue in Far Rockaway. The theater had about 2,000 seats with lots of leg room. Still have leftover turkey? Try this. Serves: 2 Ingredients: 1 roll Pillsbury Crescent rolls ½ pound low sodium sliced cooked turkey ¼ pound pepper jack cheese (or any cheese you like) 1 small can of cranberry sauce Directions: Preheat oven 375 degrees.

Open crescent rolls. Separate the triangles. Spread cranberry sauce on each triangle. Add one slice of turkey and one slice of cheese. Roll from the wide part. Either use butter spray or melted butter or egg wash on top. Bake for 20 minutes until golden brown. Enjoy!

Peninsula Prep Students Get a Lesson in Energy Conservation

Students at the Peninsula Preparatory Academy in Far Rockaway are “energy wise,” thanks to PSEG Long Island and The National Theatre for Children (NTC). Students enjoyed interacting with the NTC performers during the live Energized Guyz theater performance, which taught them about energy and how to save it. PSEG Long Island brings shows to local schools throughout the year to help kids learn at a young age how and why it is important to save energy. Peninsula’s students are among the 40,000 students in the Rockaways and Long Island to see the Conservation Caper this fall. This is the sixth season the program has been offered by PSEG Long Island to area schools free of charge. From September through December, kindergarten through sixth-grade students at 100 schools will be

entertained by the show. The Conservation Caper focuses on four key takeaways and is meant to spark conversations in the classroom on energy efficiency. During the twenty-minute performance, students learn: What energy is; The uses of energy; How energy is wasted; and Ways to conserve energy. In addition to live performances, the program includes student playbooks (print and online versions), teacher guides, e-books and digital games and activities that align

with the important concepts outlined in the live shows. PSEG Long Island sponsors every aspect of the program, making the performances and materials a cost-free supplement to lessons in science, literacy and the arts. “We sponsor these energy conservation performances because students, their teachers, and administrators have told us it’s an effective way to open the conversation about reducing energy consumption in a fun and interactive way,” said Suzanne Brienza, director
