'Stay Focused' is local high school football star, Christian Izien’s motto. Throughout his illustrious high school football career, Izien kept his eyes on the prize, which culminated in a football scholarship with Rutgers University’s Scarlet Knights, a member of the Big Ten Conference’s East Division with an all-time record of 651–646–42, ranking 37th in total victories among National Collegiate Athletics Association Football Bowl sub-division programs. After hearing about Izien, described by NJ.com as “the 3-star Brooklyn speedster,” The Rockaway Times (RT) met with the 17-yearold, 5’10”, 180-pound, Arverne By the Sea resident with a 3.7 grade point average, to learn more about his football career, why Rutgers and what keeps him focused. Upon meeting him, we found Izien’s quiet and humble demeanor belies not only his size, but his accomplishments. RT: As one of 2018’s top athlete recruits, you have a national rank of 1541, athletic rank of 112 and NY rank of 17. How does that feel? Izien: I’m still taking it all in. It all started when I was a junior at Pope John XXIII Regional High School in Sparta, NJ, where I became highly ranked. Then when I came to NY, my rank went even higher. I knew people knew about me, but I didn’t know the ‘right’ people knew about me. RT: You’ve attended three schools in your high school career, why? Izien: I started high school in Queens at St. Francis Prep. I was there for my freshman and sophomore year. I liked it, had a lot of friends and grew a lot of relationships that I maintain to this day. However, it was time for me to go elsewhere to expand my opportunities and name so I could get more nationally recognized by coaches, other players and even the media. So for my junior year, I ended up going to Pope John in NJ. However, for my senior year,

I thought why not come back to NY, and play football for a NYC high school, not just to make myself more recognized, but the city overall? I ended up at Erasmus Hall in Brooklyn, one of the top football programs when it comes to producing Division I talent on the East Coast. RT: When did you start playing football? Izien: I feel like I’ve always been running around with a ball in my hands. However, I started playing organized, contact football when I was six years old. My older brother also played football, so I guess I was meant to play. RT: What has kept you so steadfastly focused on the sport? Izien: It’s easy to fall into distractions wherever you are and whatever you are doing. What kept me focused was seeing how good I was at the sport, and being encouraged by others who saw my potential. My family, friends and coaches kept encouraging me by saying, “You got this far, keep it up, stay focused.’ I always kept their words at the back of my mind, so as the years flew pass, it wasn’t difficult for me to stay focused. I got better at the sport, got more recognition and as a result, look where I am today. RT: While playing football at Rutgers, you’ve chosen to major in Finance. Why? Izien: I’m pretty good at math, and Rutgers has one of the top business schools in the country with a great connection to Wall Street. RT: You were aggressively recruited by 10 other schools including UConn, Florida Atlantic University, Fordham and Sacred Heart to name a few. Why Rutgers? Izien: I chose Rutgers because now I will have the chance to compete at the highest level of college football in the Big 10 Conference, which I consider one of the most competitive conferences. It’s always great to get that experience and national exposure by playing in front of hundreds of thousands of fans. Also, Rutgers is close to home. My family has watched me play basically every game of my life, and Rutgers is only an hour or two drive away, so they will always be able to come watch me play. And again, Rutgers has a great business program, also nationally ranked. So it’s a win-win going to Rutgers. RT: What position will you be playing at Rutgers?

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2018 Ezien: I play all over the field, but at Rutgers I will be playing strong and free safety. It’s a pretty important job, where you get recognized for when you mess up or do a great job. RT: How long have you lived in Rockaway? Izien: I have lived here all my life with my family. We lived in the Beach 20s and 60s, then when Arverne By The Sea (ABTS) was created, we moved into the development. However, after Hurricane Sandy, we lost everything and relocated into another part of ABTS. RT: How does your family feel about you scoring a Rutgers football scholarship? Izien: My parents are ecstatic! We’ve worked for this for years! They’ve always believed in me and invested a lot in my education. They are a major part of why and how I kept focused. My mom is my manager, and she’s so happy that this is all happening for us. RT: How do you incorporate living in Rockaway, our beautiful beachfront community, into your training?

Izien: Ever since I was young, my older brother and I would run the boardwalk back-andforth from where we lived in Arverne to the end on Beach 126th Street. We would do feet-work drills to help with speed and endurance. And what better place to do it than on the beachfront? RT: Any advice for young locals aspiring to their goals? Izien: Stay focused. If you know what you want, go after it. It’s not impossible. I’m not the first, and I definitely will not be the last young person see their

dreams come true. There have been times when I didn't want to play, felt discouraged, but if you have the right network of people encouraging and supporting you, it helps you stay focused. RT: Lastly, Super Bowl is this Sunday. Care to share who you’re rooting for? Izien: I’m a big NFC guy, so I’m going to have to go with the Eagles, but admittedly, I’m a Carolina Panthers fan, but they got booted out earlier, so for the Super Bowl, I’m rooting for the Eagles.

The game will also be on, but those at the BHYC say it won’t be as “super” this year. “Watch commercials and notice the products we'll avoid this year! Support our Veterans,” a party invite reads. Pansification

A friend has insisted I write about the pansification of society. We’re all a bunch of sissies, weenies, crybabies and yes, pansies. Pansies equals pansification, I guess. It’s been a weekly thing for a while. He storms into the RT office and barks: When are you gonna write about pansification?! What, you don’t have the nerve? Maybe barks is the wrong word. I mean, these demands come from a man with not one, but two, poodles. Nothing against poodles, but if you’re gonna get all Clint Eastwood and John Wayne on me, you might hold off on showing me pictures of how cute they are. He drinks a lot of diet iced tea, too. Not long ago, when he

spotted me and the lovely bride on a bicycle built for two, he almost lost his mind. He demanded that I come out as a public pansy. I’m already on record as being a weenie. I sometimes like my alcohol disguised in fruity drinks. And sometimes I leave the little umbrella in the glass while I drink. I fight to keep my pinky extending out. But also I’m scared of things now that I never knew could scare you. Take the dentist. Plenty of people fear going to the dentist. The drill, the needles, the exposed nerves. Being a little apprehensive seems reasonable to me. But my latest fear? My need to swallow, (easy now, I’ve heard the jokes!). The dentist doesn’t want me to move, but I have to swallow. I have to friggin’ swallow. About every ten seconds. This claustrophobic-like feeling overcomes me. I’ve had the same den-

tist for years and he’s like — what the hell? You were never like this before. I see the bubble over his head: What a pansy. The internet confirms that I am not alone in this crazy need to swallow. My friend, the manly man with two poodles, asks me if I was one of those fathers who carried babies in front in one of those — what are they? — BabyBjörn things. I did not. He tells me this contraption is the clearest example of pansification. I don’t take him all that seriously because he is a man with two poodles. I am afraid to ask but I suspect they have matching sweaters. I don’t act all that offended when he wonders aloud about my masculinity lest he think I’m a snowflake. A snowflake, according to the Urban Dictionary, is a very sensitive person. Someone who is easily hurt or offend-

ed by the statements or actions of others. And this has nothing to do with politics. Snowflakes can be liberal or conservative. Oddly enough, it can be a compliment or an insult. I guess it’s a matter of context and tone. I don’t know what he expects from me. I’m a writer — what’s more pansy than that? Though, just for the record, I type with a hammer and spit chewing tobacco into a cup (in this case, I don’t need to swallow). I don’t want to name my Mr. Macho friend, but I figure some of you have seen him on the beach with his poodles or going into Spa Rockaway for a facial.

***** Rep. Gregory Meeks, who represents Rockaway in Congress, chose to boycott the President’s State of the Union on Tuesday night. He was joined by several others as well. Some Rockawayans took exception and took the chance to blast the congressman on past corruption charges. ***** The Graybeards held their annual Dinner Dance fundraiser last Saturday and it was another big success. The small group of men (and women!), who manage ticket and raffle sales, and do a million little things, don’t get nearly the credit they deserve. Great job! ***** Power of the press? A couple weeks ago, we reported on a

Lo’ and behold, the lot is now empty (save for school buses, which are supposed to vacate as well). Will the marina project get back on track? Stay tuned. ***** Charles Cheswick of Breezy wrote to the Office of Inspector General of the Triboro Bridges and Tunnels Authority concerning the past 10 years of repairs on the Marine Parkway Bridge, and about how the bridge is managed and holds up during high winds. The response he received said the bridge gets a complete inspection every two years and concluded with this somewhat puzzling conclusion: “Long term resiliency needs of the Rockaway Crossings will determine if the existing bridge is to be maintained or replaced.” Hmmm, replaced? Maybe the Army Corps of Engineers will have that in its Reformulation Study. Then again, by the time that comes out,

the bridge will have to be replaced for sure! ***** Speaking of resiliency, there is a push for off-shore wind projects thanks to the Governor saying the state would invest some $15 million towards development. The Sane Energy Project team is holding an open meeting regarding the benefits of offshore wind while maintaining its opposition to the Williams pipeline. The meeting is February 9 from 6:30 – 8:45 p.m. at Challenge Prep, 1526 Central Avenue, Far Rockaway. Another meeting is in the works at Seaside Library in Rockaway Park. ***** And still on the subject of resiliency… commuters had floodwaters to contend with on Tuesday morning, particularly around Beach 59th Street and Broad Channel. It’s a good thing that Mayor de Blasio met with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Commander Lieutenant General Todd T. Semonite. According to City Hall, the meeting focused largely on coastal protections on the Rockaway

Page 7 peninsula and in Jamaica Bay. The Mayor made the case that residents felt vulnerable to the beach erosion that’s so obvious. The Lieutenant General “agreed to accelerate the project timeline by expediting beachfront protections and continuing to move forward on bayside investments.” Now, let’s see what they mean by expediting. ***** Another reminder: The 18th Annual Rockaway Plunge is Saturday, February 3 in Breezy. Rockaway Point Vollies: Protecting the Community for 104 Years By Kami-Leigh Agard

When walking into the Rockaway Point Volunteer Fire Department (RPVFD) building in Breezy Point, your heart would be immediately warmed by the big smiles of their band of vollies. Last Wednesday, January 24, The Rockaway Times was honored with an opportunity to tour RPVFD’s building (204-26 Rockaway Point Blvd), meet with the volunteers and attend the department’s weekly fire drill. Though it was a frigid, breezy evening, at 7 p.m., the firehouse was already packed with volunteers, widely ranging in ages and backgrounds. Some are still in high school, others college students and the rest working full-time jobs. However, what unites them? Their determination to protect and care for the surrounding communities of families that they love. RPVFD secretary, and former lieutenant and acting captain of the department’s rescue team during Hurricane Sandy, Lauren Willis, is a watch commander at NYC Emergency Management (NYCEM), (formerly the Office of Emergency Management or OEM). “I love my job, every second of it, but I could never give up volunteering here,” Willis said. “When I first started volunteering, I was the ‘little kid’ here. From a young age, I learned how to save people’s lives, while making friends. RPVFD is a great outlet for kids. It keeps them out of trouble, while giving them an invaluable skillset they can implement every day in every aspect of their lives, whether inside the community or beyond. Look at the job I do today at NYCEM. RPVFD prepared me for that,” she said. Willis also emphasized the strong familial relationship the volunteers not only share with each other, but with the communities they serve at large. “Like the rest of Breezy and Roxbury, Hurricane Sandy decimated our building and equipment. We were totally inundated with water, but the community banded together to help us rebuild. Neighbors donated furniture, local artists donated their paintings to brighten up our space. We couldn’t have come back bigger

and better without our community’s support,” she said. Lining the walls of the building’s second floor are memorabilia from the past, which thankfully were not lost in the storm. Photos from the early years powerfully illustrate the department’s deep-rooted Breezy history. There are even old fire cans craftily converted into lamps. Established in 1914, RPVFD, a 501C3 nonprofit, serves the private beachfront communities of Rockaway Point & Breezy Point on the Rockaway peninsula. Operating as one of the nine remaining volunteer fire departments in NYC, its members respond to 700 alarms annually, providing fire, water rescue and basic life support (BLS) level Emergency Medical Services (EMS) transport services. Dispatched by Breezy Point’s private security force, RPVFD responds with the Point Breeze and Roxbury Volunteer Fire Departments, with each department providing a specialty service such as extrication and water rescue. What sets RPVFD apart from other NYC volunteer fire departments is their prowess in water rescues as they are amply equipped with water-specific rescue equipment, including survival suits, rescue cans and even surfboards. In addition, their trucks’ four-wheel drive power enables them to access the uniquely narrow beachfront roads of Breezy and nearby Roxbury in any weather. RPVFD consists of truck, engine and rescue companies, which all fall under the umbrella of their emergency nonprofit corporation. RPVFD’s senior officers, besides Willis, include: Department Chief Jimmy Morton (who works full-time with the NYC Department of Sanitation); Deputy Chief of Operations Steve Mastrandrea; Deputy Chief of Administration Artie Lighthall, (who recently celebrated 50 years of service with the department); Captain of Fire Co. Brian McNamee, (a full-time college student); Captain of Rescue Co. Rescue Co.: Daniel Traver (studying to be a nurse like his brother, James) and Christina Arasin, (a public school special education teacher and sister of Chief Morton). Working with the senior officers are scores of eager volunteers. Anyone of any age can volunteer with the department, however, to be a junior firefighter, you have to be age 15 and over, and pass a background check. Also all aspiring junior firefighters have to take a fire certification course offered at institutions such as the Nassau County Fire Service Academy. However, according to Lieutenant Piccione, Jr., the most essential element the department looks at is the applicant’s character. “Anyone can express their interest in joining the department. However, their success in joining our brigade is based on our character assessment of the individual,” Piccione said. Piccione also stated that RPVFD is a very aggressive interior op-

eration company. “Unlike other volunteer fire companies, who just work around basic rescue, we also focus on saving property, which is a major priority of small vulnerable communities such as ours that are close to the water. We want our volunteers to be prepared and aware of that,” he said. At Wednesday’s drill, all the vollies were timed on how quickly they got their suits on, and then proceeded into the fire truck, where they headed for a nearby open space, where they practiced activities such as hosing. After the drill, they then huddled to review what they just did, and assess what they could have done better and faster. And of course,

discussed what could be done more efficiently next time, especially when faced with an actual rescue. One new recruit, Belle Harbor resident, Rachel Sito, was there to watch the drill. When asked why she wants to be a volunteer with RPVFD, she said, “I used to live in Breezy, and know many of the people in the department. When I recently took the city fire test to join the department, my mom showed me a photo of myself as a little kid in front of the Breezy Firehouse. I look up to the vollies because they unselfishly give their time to keep the community safe. RPVFD feels like being at home with family,” Sito said.

Before each meeting and drill at the firehouse, one of the vollies said that they all say the Pledge of Allegiance and the Fireman’s Prayer. He said, “In the Fireman’s Prayer, what jumps out for me is this verse, ‘I want to fill my calling and to give the best in me, to guard my neighbor and protect his property.’” RPVFD has been dedicated to guarding and protecting their neighbors for 104 years and they’re not stopping anytime soon. If you’ve ever taken a dip in the water in the winter, you’re familiar with that feeling of the cold shock taking your breath away. What if you experienced that feeling every day, throughout the day? That is what some might describe having Cystic Fibrosis as. Cystic Fibrosis is a hereditary disorder that causes an abnormal buildup of thick mucus in the body, leading to damaged lungs and digestive systems. Annie McMahon has been dealing with complications of the disease since she was diagnosed at age three. On Saturday, February 3, locals will be taking the plunge into the chilly bay to raise money for McMahon and the New York Lung Transplant Fund. toward covering the costs associated with McMahon’s lung transplant and to help others through the New York Lung Transplant Fund. McMahon has endured an upward battle with Cystic Fibrosis throughout her life. After trooping through several years of respiratory issues, McMahon was finally given some relief when she received a double lung transplant in

2016. Complications related to the transplant resulted in a three-month hospital stay. In July 2017, McMahon’s body began to reject the new lungs and she was once again put on the transplant list. In November 2017, she was granted the gift of life once again as she received a second double lung transplant. In year’s past, the plunge has raised funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This year, the money will go toward Help Hope Live to cover some of the medical expenses associated with McMahon’s recent transplant, and to the New York Lung Transplant Fund, so that others who need transplants can also receive financial help. The McMahons choose to donate to Help Hope Live because it assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility to the full extent allowed by law for donors. Donors can be sure that funds donated will be used only to pay for or reimburse medical expenses. The annual plunge began in 2000 as a fun dare that sparked

from a conversation in a bar. “It started at the Tap and Grill and from there it has grown. The whole thing kind of started as a dare. We dared the bartender, Jim Mullen, to jump in the ocean and people were giving him money to do it, so we said let’s do it and donate the money to Cystic Fibrosis. From there, the money has gone to different charities related to Cystic Fibrosis,” Annie’s father, John McMahon told The Rockaway Times in an interview in 2016. Since that bet, the plunge has grown immensely. Each year, roughly 300 people take the plunge and past events have raised as much as $100,000. “There are people that have been doing this for years in Rockaway. It’s great how the Rockaway community gets behind it, including people who know my daughter or someone else with Cystic Fibrosis and people who have no connection to the disease, but just want to help. It’s always an emotional day with laughter and tears, but it has helped my daughter. It’s her favorite day of the year and it motivates her, letting her connect with people, knowing that she’s not alone. It’s a great day, but also a tough day,” John McMahon said. Annie McMahon is expected to attend Saturday’s event. She’ll also be celebrating her 21st birthday that day. De Blasio Meets With Army Corps Looks like the mayor stuck to his word. As promised at the Town Hall held in Belle Harbor in December, Mayor Bill de Blasio made good on his plan to urge the Army Corps of Engineers to provide coastal protection to Rockaway sooner than later. On Friday, January 26, de Blasio met with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Commander Lieutenant General Todd T. Semonite. The 45-minute meeting began at 10:45 a.m. and was held at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers headquarters in Washington, D.C., and focused largely on coastal protections on the Rockaway peninsula and in Jamaica Bay. Mayor de Blasio made the case that residents of the Rockaways felt vulnerable to the beach erosion they were seeing in their community. Lieutenant General

Semonite agreed to accelerate the project timeline by expediting beachfront protections and continuing to move forward on bayside investments. The Mayor expressed his appreciation for the work of the Army Corps. He and the Lieutenant General agreed to continue working together collaboratively on this project and others in New York City. An updated timeline has not yet been released.

Analyze This Dear Editor: Words provide much of the magic in my life, so you should be flattered because I’ve saved so many of yours — “The Best of Boyleing Points.” I’ve saved your latest, “Curses,” because, as usual you are able to call “a spade a spade” without digging a literary grave for yourself, and because this editorial jarred a long-repressed memory. I was fresh out of high school, the proverbial old-fashioned girl and everyone's teacher’s pet, because I had always been able to an-

It was freshman English and the professor began with an introduction to Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye. Each of us was given an analytical assignment based on the novel. Mine came with a shock that still makes my bones rattle — “Joan Tuzzoli,” she shouted, “You will explain why Holden draws a line at writing F**K You…” The rest of her words were lost in the thunder that filled my brain as my professor tumbled off her pedestal. You see, for me teachers were gods. Unlike human beings, they were perfect in every way and they certainly didn’t say the “F” word. When I regained my speech, I asked the professor for a different assignment. With her refusal, I faced a cataclysmic battle of wills between my conscience and a devil who made an appearance on the professor’s side. “Joanie,” he tempted, “Teachers’ pets

never displease their teachers!” At seventeen, this was a traumatic dilemma and it was all about a curse word I didn’t want to analyze. Among my first “lost saints” was the loss of a cherished idea: Teachers were no longer gods. Not until I met an extraordinary professor the next year. Wind in the Forecast On Monday, January 29, Governor Andrew Cuomo released an Offshore Wind Master Plan, detailing his extensive plan for investing in offshore wind energy in New York, which could take place off of Rockaway’s waters. Local clean energy groups will be holding meetings to discuss the plan. The comprehensive 60-page plan, which can be found at www.nyserda.ny.gov, explains a plan to develop 2.4 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030, enough to power up to 1.2 million homes with clean energy. A large part of this plan may move forward soon, as in his 2018 State of the Union address, Governor Cuomo announced that the state will issue solicitations in 2018 and in 2019 for a combined total of at least 800 megawatts of offshore wind power. Cuomo also announced a $15 million commitment to train the local workforce for good-paying jobs needed to build offshore wind and develop port infrastructure.

Sane Energy Project, a local clean energy support group, will be holding a meeting on Friday, February 9, to discuss the plan. From 6:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. at Challenge Preparatory Charter Middle School (1526 Central Avenue) in Far Rockaway, they’ll inspect the Master Plan and start local discussions about what a Community Benefit Agreement would look like, as Cuomo’s offshore wind project could begin right off the waters of Rockaway. Sane Energy Project will also be discussing another energy project, which they do not support—a new proposed Williams natural gas pipeline. They will give their take on the project and encourage people to leave public statements for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which will be reviewed by the Commission. Sane Energy Project will be holding another meeting at a later date in February at Seaside Library on Beach 117th Street. Stay tuned for details.

I was honored to be at El Caribe with hundreds of others at the 17th Annual Dinner Dance on Saturday, January 27, this year honoring John Edwards and the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League. At age 85, I am happy to be anywhere, especially to honor the honored. John and the Graybeards are most giving. It has been said that, “It’s better to

give than to receive.” I add that it is best to give and receive because one receives in the giving and the giving is passed on sans end. All at the event are examples for a better world. John has given away zillions of calories in the form of cookies and cakes, kept more than a few for himself, at various running venues. He actually gave without charging an entry fee at his Thursday night Summer Series. At numerous other rac-

John has personally given much, much more in other venues in life. John is truly great and one to emulate. It was 35 years ago that I met John. It was atop a hill in Forest Park, the start of a one-mile race toward Woodhaven Boulevard. I was in my 50s with John some twenty years my junior. His Ocean Run t-shirt caught my attention. I started a con-

versation and he mentioned he was from Rockaway and intended to run the mile in under seven minutes, I was a “Doubting Bert”—even back then John carried some excess baggage. The Ocean Run was sponsored by Chase Bank that year, and on the back of the t-shirts, its logo was “Chase Me.” The gun went off and so did John as if he were shot out of it. Almost breakneck speed with me at his heels following, “Chase Me.” Halfway down the course I thought, “This guy can’t keep this pace.” I was wrong, he did. Nearing the finish line shoulder to shoulder, stride to stride, neck to neck — John won, I lost. Not by a nose but by a belly button. John, you were a winner then, and still a winner in many more ways than I can count in this game called life. I’ll answer a question which may be on your mind. Did John and Bert break seven minutes? Answer: Hell, yes. 6:30 flat and that was that. Those were the days.

Life Expectancy Numbers Shift Drug poisoning (overdose) deaths more than doubled in the U.S. from 2000 to 2015, while deaths from opioid overdoses more than tripled in the same period. Increases in poisoning deaths, which are classified as subsets of unintentional injuries, suicides, homicides, or events of undetermined intent, have reduced the life expectancy of non-Hispanic white individuals in the U.S. from 2000 to 2014. Overall life expectancy at birth for the general population increased from 76.8 years in 2000 to 78.8 years in 2015. From 2000 to 2015, death rates related

to heart disease, cancer, cerebrovascular disease (stroke), diabetes, influenza and pneumonia, chronic lower respiratory disease, and kidney disease decreased, adding a gain in life expectancy of 2.25 years. During the same period, death rates related to unintentional injuries, Alzheimer’s disease, suicide, chronic liver disease and serious infections increased, which caused a loss of 0.33 years in life expectancy. The National Vital Statistics System Mortality file, which uses information from death certificates from all 50 states and the District

of Columbia, lists the leading causes of death in the U.S. In descending order, the top 12 causes of death are heart disease, cancers, chronic respiratory illness, unintentional injuries, cerebrovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, influenza and pneumonia, kidney disease, suicide, infections, and chronic liver disease. In 2000, there were 97,900 unintentional injury deaths, which included overdoses. In 2015, this number rose to 146,571. The age-adjusted death rate per 100,000 population increased from 6.2 to 16.3, mostly due to opioid overdoses, during the same period. The negative effect of opioid overdose deaths on the change in life expectancy is likely underestimated because the accuracy and completeness of information recorded on death certificates affects cause-specific death rates. A specific drug is not listed on the death certificate in as many as one quarter of overdose deaths. Increases in U.S. life expectancy at

The Rockaway Times birth have leveled off from a mean of 0.20 years gained annually from 1970 to 2000 to 0.15 years gained annually from 2014 to 2015, and is now lower than most high-income countries, and this gap is predicted to continue to increase. These findings strongly suggest that finding ways to prevent opioid-related overdose deaths will be important to once again begin achieving healthy increases in life expectancy in this country. Incidentally, recently NYC announced a lawsuit against opioid manufacturers. This is akin to suing the manufacturer of a pistol because someone committed suicide with it. While it may be commendable that the City is trying to do something about the opioid epidemic, it’s my opinion (I admit I’m not a lawyer) that this lawsuit will have a difficult uphill battle. I believe the City would have better success by tracking opioid prescriptions and going after healthcare providers that overprescribe or inappropriately prescribe them. ness on my part, I am able to stop and focus on something positive to help me to deal with the ugly stuff. Through awareness we can arrest the thought process that keeps us dwelling on what is wrong. What is awareness? Awareness could be a gut feeling or one that we take in through the senses. Stopping the hard stuff, the negative that is part of life, for a moment and asking, “what else is going on?” So yes,

there is a shoot (sign of spring) coming from the ground—well maybe not yet—or a smile from someone that just gets you, or a dinner that is fabulous. These other things are the positive things in our lives. There are many. We just have to acknowledge them. Just like noting gratitude for our food, our water, our heat, etc., which I do say to myself on a daily basis, we can also acknowledge the daily positives—the miracles of life. When stuff happens, we are caught up and may lose our daily gratitude. But that is what keeps us from practicing awareness in all sides of our lives—positive and negative! It is like a trick that we have to get so that when we are in a not so good place, we recognize it immediately and engage our awareness to focus on positive things. Awareness, in my view, is the key to transforming our lives from “whatever” to “meaningful.” The only way to gain awareness is to stop the body and mind—to calm down

Page 25 and just be. Call it what you like—reflection, contemplation, meditation. “What is going on?” Life spins every day. While there are many negative things around us even on a grander scale, focusing on the positive brings well-being on an individual basis. And any change happens one thing at a time, one person at a time, one at a time. Maybe take the time multiple times per day to think about what is positive in your life, what brings joy, what fulfills your inner self, what just feels good. Ingredients: 2 pounds bone-in pork chops Salt and pepper to taste 1 tablespoon minced garlic ¼ cup honey (I used a little more) 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh rosemary 1 teaspoon dried or fresh thyme

Marshall Crenshaw Coming to Town Marshall Crenshaw, along with guest, Gerald Bair, will be the next performers as part of the Bugalou music series. They’ll be coming to St. Camillus Springman Hall on Saturday, February 10. Growing up in Detroit, Marshall Crenshaw gravitated to music at a young age, influenced by the sounds of Buddy Holly, The Beatles, and his hometown Motown Sound. He first gained attention as part of the cast of Beatlemania, in the role of John Lennon. Following that stint, he assembled a band, including his brother, Robert, to perform and record his own songs. His song, “Someday, Someway” was recorded by Robert Gordon, who had a hit with it in 1981, prior to Crenshaw's own recording of the composition. The song would be featured on his self-titled debut the following

year, and climb higher than Gordon's cover. Other standout tracks included: “There She Goes Again,” “Rockin' Around in NYC,” “The Usual Thing,” “She Can't Dance,” “Brand New Lover,” “Cynical Girl,” and a cover of Arthur Alexander's “Soldier of Love,” which had been a staple of The Beatles early repertoire in Hamburg and Liverpool. In a year that included Michael Jackson's “Thriller,” Prince's “1999,” and Bruce Springsteen's “Nebraska,” among many others, Crenshaw's debut garnered Top 10 honors on many end-of-the-year lists, including #9 in the Village Voice Critic's Poll. His follow up, “Field Day,” featured the hit, “Whenever You're On My Mind.” In 1987, Crenshaw was cast as Buddy Holly in the Richie Valens biopic, “La Bamba,” and contributed “Holly's

Crying, Waiting, Hoping” to the soundtrack. Crenshaw has continued to write, record and perform, and has also hosted a radio show, The Bottomless Pit, on WFUV and NPR for many years. He has currently undertaken a movie project about the life of Tom Wilson, who produced Bob Dylan's, and Simon and Garfunkel's breakthrough albums in the 1960's. Marshall Crenshaw continues to be a vital artist and performer, true to the values that got him where he is today. Gerald Bair has been a stalwart of the Rockaway music scene for many years, dating to his seminal band, Ameranth, with lifelong friend, Walter Ensor. “Driving Out of Rockaway,” “Bleecker Street,” and “This Changed Everything” are among his most-loved original songs, which he pairs with his in-

terpretations from the classic rock songbook in a riveting performance style. Crenshaw and Bair are longtime personal friends, so the combination is sure to make for a memorable evening of music. The 17th Annual Graybeard Dinner Dance was held at El Caribe on Saturday, January 27 and hundreds turned out to honor John Edwards and the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League, which have both done so much for the community. Also honored was Sergeant First Class Thomas Janusz, a Wounded Warrior, who received a free stay at Disney World from the Graybeards and a cash reward thanks to Stockings for a Cause, an annual holiday fundraising effort led by Eugene Brennan of the Park Avenue Tavern.

The Rockaway Fisheads Rugby Club will be hosting a fundraiser and awards dinner on the evening of February 10 at The Hibernian (AOH) in Roxbury. As we celebrate 44 years as Rockaway's one and only men's rugby club and prepare for our 2018 season, we need your support! To bring you up to speed on what's been happening with the club as of late...

The Fisheads have enjoyed considerable success in recent years, but we need your help to make sure that trend continues into the future. Rockaway has represented the Empire Rugby Union in League Championships from 2011-2014 and won the NY South Division in both 2015 and 2016. Rockaway proved to be a force to be reckoned with in post-season play as well. After defeating Danbury RFC in the

quarter-finals, and Buffalo RFC in the semi-finals, Rockaway fell to the Fairfield Yankees by a single point in the 2016 Regional Championship; the latter advanced to win the DIII National Title that year. After winning the division for the second consecutive year in 2016, Rockaway defeated Lansdowne RFC in the regional quarter-finals before meeting the vaunted Yankees once more in the regional semi-finals, but came up short once more against the defending USA Rugby National Champions. A tough, but young Rockaway club suffered a disappointing season in the Fall of 2017 in a NY South division filled with resurgent clubs, plus newcomer, Long Island RFC fresh from the ultra-competitive DII. Although the season's outcome fell below the high expectations of ourselves as well as our fans, the experiences gained and lessons learned by the club's youthful players and leadership have helped us visualize the path forward.

The Rockaway Times Now as Rockaway prepares for its spring and fall seasons, plus Summer Sevens, as well as the famous Rockaway Summer Sevens Tournament, we ask the greater Rockaway Rugby family to help us execute an ambitious agenda. Arverne resident Chris Tedesco recently brought it to our attention that some boardwalk access points in Arverne were never completed. The street-side ramps and staircases at Beach 61st, 62nd and 65th Streets, lead directly into the sand, making it difficult for those with beach wagons, and

DCA KICKS OFF TAX SEASON WITH EXPANSION OF NYC FREE TAX PREP It’s that time again…tax season. Last Thursday, January 25, Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) Commissioner Lorelei Salas kicked off the tax season with the launch and expansion of the agency’s 16th annual tax season campaign, encouraging New Yorkers who earned $66,000 or less to file for free using NYC Free Tax Prep. On February 10, DCA, in collaboration with the Department of Education’s network of community schools, will host the NYC Free Tax Prep-a-Thon, a 12-hour tax filing marathon and resource fair at schools in all five boroughs. Tax preparers will be on site from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. helping New Yorkers file their taxes for free. Also offered will be free financial counseling with a financial counselor from the NYC Financial Empowerment Centers. Counselors can help tackle debt issues, save for the future, open a bank account, improve credit, and much more. Free screening for local, state, and federal health

and human service benefits will also be available to help individuals find out if they are eligible. This family friendly event will offer fun activities for kids and a resource fair for individuals to learn more about the many city resources available.
