BC Backs the Blue By Katie McFadden

The Broad Channel community grabbed the reins of showing support to local law enforcement after the killings of Detectives Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora. BC resident Lillian O’Sullivan led the charge, organizing blue ribbon fundraising sales, a student card-writing effort and a large Back the Blue Saturday parade, which the Broad Channel community came out in full to support. In the week leading up to the parade, O’Sullivan sold blue ribbons for residents to tie on their trees and fences to show support with $5 from each $6 ribbon going toward the cause. On Saturday, ahead of the parade, local kids Patrick O’Sullivan and Allison Basetti manned a table to sell more blue ribbons, cupcakes and other goodies. Though it was chilly, Broad Channel came out in force on Saturday to line Cross Bay Blvd. with American and police flags in hand, and even a bagpiper

came out to play some tunes as officers from the local precincts, plus state troopers and Broad Channel’s Volunteer Fire Department passed by in their vehicles, with horns blaring, showing appreciation for the support from the community. Through their efforts, Broad Channel raised more than $7,000 to donate a nice meal toward local police stations, with the remaining money going toward the families of Detectives Rivera and Mora. “Our law enforcement members need our support more than ever! The Broad Channel Community became a morale booster brigade! Far too often, some members of the media, politicians and the public don’t focus on the positive interactions that law enforcement members have with communities. They also neglect the fact that we need our officers to uphold the laws that keep communities safe and allow them to prosper,” O’SulliContinued on page 6

Exploring You gotta be an explorer to find this place named for an explorer. Columbus, New Mexico is out there/out there, three miles from the Mexico border, eighty miles west of the last human. Fifty miles past El Paso, on the way to Columbus, you could be driving on Mars, but you can see the wall, the one built to stop people from illegal entry into the U.S. From here, it looks like you’d have to cross a mountain range and hundreds of miles of hilly desert to get to the wall, which is a black fence. I guess such a structure slows people down but if they can get across Mars, probably in the dark, I’m thinking they can deal with a fence. I was happy to be in a truck with a full tank of gas. A hundred tumbleweeds later, I pulled into the Los Milagros Hotel parking lot. The six-room inn was colorful and adorned with Christmas lights. I went inside and met the proprietor, a man named Philip, in his 70s, who’d come from California three decades before. I told him I was heading to Arizona and his place seemed like a perfect oasis. We got to talking and I men-

tioned that I had my bike on my truck and I was thinking about biking into Mexico. He said he had a couple of businesses south of the border and if I wanted to take a ride with him later, he’d give me a quick tour of Palomas, the Mexican town a few miles away. But first he had to drive the school bus to pick up kids at dismissal and drop them off. Not his kids. He was the hotel owner and the town’s school bus driver. I asked him if he was the mayor, too, and he said, no – he’d lost reelection. And he wasn’t pulling my leg. I hopped on my bike and pedaled into Mexico, walking my bike through the customs building, not being asked for my passport or any ID. The town has less than 5,000 people and I was able to zig zag around and cover it in no time. When I went back into the U.S., I walked the bike through the customs building and didn’t have to show my passport. Or maybe I did. But if I did, it was more like a wave of the passport. I got back to the hotel in Columbus and Philip had dropped off the school kids and asked again if I wanted to take a ride with him across

the border. He had to drop off a couple of things. I figured I’d get to hear more about life out here so took him up on his offer of a ride into Mexico. It wasn’t until we were at the border and the border patrol police told us to get out of his van that I had visions of Midnight Express, the story of an American caught smuggling at the Turkish border followed by his happy stay in a Turkish prison. My man, Philip, – I didn’t care he was the former mayor– seemed relaxed but I’m thinking – WTF? – I take a ride for some culture and this guy might have who knows what in his van. I’d even helped him put one of the cardboard boxes in the back. The border police are heavily armed, and they circle the van, just like they do in the movies. Before I confess, we’re back in the van and on our way. Turns out, Philip is only Philip in New Mexico. In Mexico, he’s Don Felipe. At least that’s the sign on his ice cream shop. He drops off the box I’d put in the van (probably not drugs,

money, or guns) and chats with a young lady running the shop. When we drive off, he casually mentions, she’s his ex-girlfriend and partner in his other business, a cellphone store. At this point, I’m not sure what is more hard-to-believe, all these businesses and side hustles or that young woman ever being his girlfriend. I get the tour, see some kids playing basketball and tell Phillip to stop. I ask the kids if I can take a shot – from the top of the key: boom: one for one in Mexico. The kids explode with cheers. I get back in the van. When we get back to Columbus, I realize something. You know what Columbus, New Mexico has that Rockaway doesn’t? A museum. Everywhere, I mean everywhere, has a museum. In nearby Deming, New Mexico (nearby out here is 30 miles away), there is a museum dedicated to “the everyday lives of the citizens of Deming.” Huh? Everyday lives gets a museum? And we can’t one going in Rockaway? Hmmm….I’d say that’s worth exploring.

A Gift for a Hero

Stockings For a Cause was a big success and on Friday, February 5 at the Graybeards Dinner Dance, guests got to see what it was all about. United States Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Brandon Dodson and his family were gifted with a check for $30,809. On his final mission in August 2014, Dodson stepped on an IED, resulting in both of his legs being lost. The Dodson family, of San Diego, were honored at the dance on Friday and presented with the check for the money raised from the Stockings effort.

***** The Rockaway Powerball, aka, The Graybeards Pot of Gold raffle, was a showstopper as the winning amount climbed to $262,000! Congratulations to Kevin Byrnes, the sole, lucky winner. And congratulations to The Graybeards who will take their share of the raffle and do a lot of good. This is the definition of a win-win. ***** The Department of Investigation (DOI) released a report saying 15 homeowners in Arverne By The Sea are in “Violation of the Primary Residence Requirement.” The report does not name names but says most used the properties as rentals and advertised them on sites like AirBnB. In other cases, owners bought

multiple houses yet still listed them as a primary residence. One owner has received more than $175,000 in tax exemptions. This all began in the early 2000s when The Department of Housing Preservation & Development (HPD) incentivized buyers with tax breaks. The DOI says HPD did not enforce any of its own rules. The report says, the sponsor of Arverne by the Sea (Benjamin Beechwood), had nothing to with any of the illegal activity. CEO Gerry Romski says he cooperated fully with the investigation and is sympathetic to owners who have played by the rules. DOI has referred its findings “to relevant enforcement authorities.” The full report can be found at: https:// on.nyc.gov/3rCBEAg ***** At any time of year this would be a hardship, but it’s particularly cruel when temperatures fall into the teens and twenties. Carlton Manor in Arverne, part of NYCHA, has been without hot water going on four months.

Months! A judge, quoted in the Daily News said, “If this was a private small landlord, he [the landlord] would be in jail by now. He would have been in jail and he would have been losing his building too.” Tenants have had to heat water on stoves to bathe. Queens Borough President Donovan Richards is demanding NYCHA not charge tenants rent until the unacceptable hot water outage is rectified. That’s the least that can be done! ***** One of the more important City commissionerships for Rockaway is that of NYC Parks. Mayor Adams just named Susan Donoghue to serve as the Commissioner of New York City Parks & Recreation. In that role, she will oversee more than seven miles of beach in Rockaway, numerous playgrounds, other recreation sites. Previously, Donoghue was President of Prospect Park Alliance. Iris Rodriguez-Rosa was named First Deputy Commission-

The Rockaway Times er. Liam Kavanagh remains a Deputy Commissioner. ***** 22-year-old off-duty NYPD Police Officer Manuel Soto was shot last week in an attempted carjacking while stopped for a light at Beach 62nd Street and Beach Channel Drive at 10 p.m. Fortunately, he survived and was released from the hospital after a couple of nights. The two suspects, both from Rockaway, face attempted murder charges. Soto, a rookie officer, is the sixth member of the NYPD shot this year. ***** Kyle Mullen, just 24, died last week, hours after finishing the first phase of the Navy SEALs selection process, often called “Hell week” for its physical demands. Mullen was a standout football player in New Jersey and later at Yale. Kyle’s dad, Tom Mullen, grew up on Beach 120th Street and many family members still reside in Rockaway. Our heartfelt condolences go out to all.

Officials Call for Action After NYCHA Leaves Residents in the Cold By Katie McFadden

For more than four months, residents of the NYCHA residence, Carleton Manor on Beach 74th Street, have gone without hot water. A February 5 New York Daily News article shed light on a court case relating to the issue, sending out an alarm to local elected officials to put out a call for action. According to the Daily News article, dozens of tenants have filed a petition in Housing Court in hopes that NYCHA will make major improvements to the 174unit building. As many as 300 tenants in the building have allegedly not had hot water since November. In a January 20 hearing about the case, Judge Kimon Thermos said, “If this was a private small landlord he [the landlord] would be in jail by now,” according to the DN. After hearing the reports, Queens Borough President Do-

novan Richards called on fellow elected officials to join him at a press conference in front of Carleton Manor on Tuesday, February 7. Richards, Senator James Sanders and representatives for Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers, among others joined residents to decry NYCHA’s failure to act. “Fifty-six freezing winter days that some parents haven’t been able to bathe their baby in warm water. Fifty-six freezing winter days where kids are taking cold showers before schools. Fifty-six freezing winter days where disabled seniors have no heat and have to heat a pot of water on a stove in order to wash their bodies. It is shameful, it is despicable but unfortunately it is completely unsurprising,” Richards said. “It’s unsurprising because we all know black and brown New Yorkers make up the vast majority of NYCHA housing. It would be stunning if

this happened on the Upper East Side or Upper West Side, but we know that would never happen. This is prime example of a historically underserved community being completely ignored by the city.” LaWanda Johnson-Gainey, a resident and president of the resident council, said that even when the issue is addressed, it isn’t done properly. “It’s been a struggle for me and the tenants. Now most have hot water, some don’t, but what we’re dealing with now is the pressure is so low, you turn on the showers and it trickles out so you can’t take a shower. Thank you for coming out. We’ve been fighting this for a long time. Since before November. It's been a lot.” Richards went on to demand that NYCHA not take rent from

residents until the hot water issue is fixed and that residents should not have to pay for rent at least four months after that, to make up for the four months that they have gone without hot water. “It’s about time NYCHA started treating its residents with respect and fairness,” he said. At Tuesday’s Community Board 14 meeting, a representative for Richards said that all Carleton Manor residents were expected to have full hot water service restored by next week.

I long been coming here to walk wanted a space that reflects how on the boardwalk. I decided to I want pets to be treated,” Chong make this my retirement place,” said. And it is a palace where Chong said. But Chong has been pets are pampered with the best. ting and other treatments, Pawlacio Pets has all of your pet needs to make them look and feel their best. And they use top-of-the-line products. “The products we use are certified pet safe and imported from Italy. The line that I use is the best that the company produces. They promote good skin, they’re super hydrating and they’re super healthy for dogs,” Chong says. The same goes for their skincare treatments. As a pet aesthetician, Chong can treat most pet skin issues from allergic reactions to dry skin, flea bites to mange. After a pet owner has taken their pet to a vet to find the underlying cause of the issue and receive proper medical treatment, Pawlacio Pets can serve as the next stop to help return a pet’s skin to normal. “A lot of pets have allergies which mostly results in dry skin, but when it’s dry, that natural barrier is broken, allowing toxins and parasites to easily penetrate their skin and cause infection, so we deal with infections as long as the underlying cause is not health related. I’m not a vet, but I can help work with a pet to bring relief to the skin,” Chong explained. For training, Pawlacio offers puppy training and behavior training in one-on-one classes or in group classes up to six dogs. For daycare, Pawlacio provides two large play areas, one for large breeds and one for smaller breeds, and all dogs are in for a day full of fun. “We have toys for them, so when a pet first come in, they play, and then we help them relax and they do interactions with our staff,” Chong said. At

this time, Pawlacio Pets does not provide overnight boarding, but as they get into the groove and figure out what they can manage, it is something Chong may consider offering in the future. All pet owners interested in utilizing services must complete a packet that includes pet vaccination records, especially for rabies, and a temperament review to make sure a dog is a good candidate for daycare, or behavioral training may be suggested before a dog can socialize or play with others. Chong hopes that Pawlacio Pets serves as a place where pets get the best. “I want every dog to come in here and have a good experience when they leave. That’s why when new pets come in, we don’t throw them in the bathtub and groom them right away. We let them smell around and get comfortable and then we try grooming,” Chong said. “I’m really excited to share my passion in taking care of pets and giving them the best care that I can.” During this soft opening, Chong welcomes everyone to come check out the space, take a tour and learn about Pawlacio Pets’ services, pricing and requirements. For now, Pawlacio Pets is open from 7:30 a.m. to 7 pm on weekdays, and more limited hours from about 9 am. to 1 p.m. on weekends, but this is subject to change. Petcare professionals who are looking for employment are also encouraged to stop by. Pawlacio Pets is located at 11406 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. FEBRUARY COMMUNITY BOARD 14 MEETING RECAP By Katie McFadden

In a lengthy virtual Community Board 14 meeting on Tuesday, February 8, public speaking, updates from elected officials and land use issues dominated. Chairwoman Dolores Orr gave updates, announcing that despite the speed bumps on Shore Front Parkway, FDNY’s response to last month’s fire at 102-00 SFP was three minutes, which is normal. District Manager Jon Gaska reminded people that online access info for the CB meetings is available on the CB14 website: https ://www1.nyc.gov/site/ queenscb14/index.page Next, elected officials were invited to speak. Councilwoman Joann Ariola said her Rockaway office was back open after renovations. She will soon have a joint meeting with the community board and DOT to talk about better solutions for the speed bumps on Shore Front Parkway. She recently acquired $60,000 so the unfinished Scholars’ Academy’s learning garden can be completed. Ariola has

developed a community solutions task force to focus on different concerns. The first meeting will focus on Beach 116th Street issues. Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers announced that she has been appointed Majority Whip for the New York City Council and is now serving on eight committees. She recently met with the MTA Chair and she will be meeting with the Department of Transportation in Rockaway, so she can discuss transportation concerns, including being oversaturated with speed cameras. Her Far Rockaway office is now open. Both councilwomen asked that nonprofits head to their website to request discretionary funding if needed. The deadline is February 26. Representatives for Sanders, Addabbo and Richards’ office were also on hand to provide some updates Next, after Orr thanked the NYPD for their response to the off-duty officer shooting last week before Deputy Inspector Carlos Fabara of the 100th Precinct provided some updates.

He said the officer that was shot is at home recovering. He then delved into crime stats, saying there has been an uptick in crime, but no murders or rapes over the past month. There has been a 125% increase in felony assaults and an uptick in grant larceny auto. During public speaking portion, most speakers consisted of Beach 116th Street residents who expressed major concerns over the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers utilizing Beach 116th as the staging area for the groin project. Many have been dealing with heavy vibrations in their apartments for long hours, toxic rock dust coming into their apartments and noise, and requested that another area be used for the staging area, and that the project not go on during summer, so local businesses are not negatively impacted. Other speakers consisted of ALMA Surfside buildings residents who spoke about current conditions and reasons against ALMA’s alleged plans to build more buildings on the property,

which would eliminate parking. Councilwoman Joann Ariola recently did a walkthrough of the buildings, which led to ALMA attempting to make quick fixes before her visit. Next were Land Use issues. The first concerned HPD’s Resilient Edgemere Community Plan, a proposal in the works since 2015, to bring more residential housing from an area that spans from Beach 38th to Beach 51st Street. Many board members responded negatively toward new parts of the plan that called for upzoning to build mid-rise buildings with rental apartments, as opposed to one- and two-family homes that could be owned. A motion was made to oppose the project and require that HPD continues the original plan of building homes. The motion passed unanimously. The second item was regarding a requested variance for the Courthouse on Beach 92nd Street to be used for commercial office space after the owner was unable to get medical office tenants. The board unanimously approved the motion.

The question is not whether natural immunity is better than vaccination. The question is whether there are good reasons for not getting vaccinated. Dear Editor: In his letter implying the superiority of natural immunity over vaccines, Dr. Harold Paez makes the indisputable point that natural immunity to Covid 19 is a good thing. What he leaves out is that people don’t know if they have natural immunity until they actually get the disease. And by then it is too late. Worldwide, millions of people can’t attest to this fact because they are dead. Dr. Paez makes the point that 75% of the people who died from Covid had underlying medical con-

Dear Editor: Let me begin by thanking Katie McFadden for writing about the issue that I have been silently enduring for the several months...the placement on Beach 116th Street of the staging site for the groin and jetty project that Rockaway so desperately needs. As a longtime resident for over 50 years, I certainly recognize the need for protection of our shoreline and our community at large. I strongly support the protection offered by the jetties and sand replenish-

ment. However, since last September I have been experiencing extreme anxiety due to the noisy, possibly toxic project so close to my home, the Ocean Grande condominium. This could impact the businesses the community relies upon as the beach could be closed next summer forcing some of them to close due to lack of beach goers. I'll be more specific in describing the effects of this project. Last week, I was awakened by my bed shaking. It was an extremely strong vibration emanating from the staging site I saw out my window. Huge boulders were being dropped along with sand and smaller rocks into a truck that would carry them downtown to where a jetty was being built. There are times when I'm working at my computer with my bare feet on the floor, that I feel the floor shaking too. That happens all day long. And now the piece de resistance.... the dust. The movement of the rocks mixed with sand leads to the release of

particles that turn into very visible dust. This dust gives me congestion, sinus headaches and the need to polish my furniture multiple times each day. So that's the gist of my tale of woe. I thought I would spend my retirement in a calm and healthy place.... living near the ocean and breathing clean, fresh air. It was not meant to be when the Army Corps of Engineers and their contractor made the ill-advised decision to affect the community by picking a spot to do their moving and shaking so close to occupied high rises filled with people of all ages. Please move the site asap. AVOID A LOW APPRAISAL A while back, the New York Times had an article about low appraisals. It explained that the appraisal process has become more rigid in recent years. This is still the case. In fact, it has become even more of an issue as real estate prices have increased faster than the comparable sales. A low appraisal may mean that the buyer can’t borrow enough money to close. According to the article, the low appraisal can be contested – but this probably would be unsuccessful. It suggested that the best approach is to be totally prepared for the appraiser’s inspection. Preparation for the appraisal

includes comprehensive data on comparable sales during the past six months. Specific information on these “comps” may help: busier street? Older kitchens and baths? Smaller rooms? Info on other houses which are in “contract” and haven’t closed can also help – but only informally. How can the seller best be ready for the appraiser? A good solution is to have a smart, hardworking, experienced local real estate broker representing you. The experienced local broker may even know many of the appraisers who work the neighborhood – I do! Call me. Love, Robin

Rocco’s Gets A TV Spotlight By Katie McFadden

The spotlight was on Rocco’s of Roc Beach last week as they celebrated ahead of the premiere of their television debut on “Brindiamo!,” showcasing their executive five-star, award-winning chef Bruno Milone. For those wondering where the spotlights were coming from last Thursday night, it was all for a star-studded red-carpet event at new Italian restaurant Rocco’s of Roc Beach. After all, they had a lot to celebrate. Back in December, Rocco’s closed to customers one morning for the filming of “Brindiamo!,” a TV show on NYC Live (Channel 25) hosted by Italian superstar Ornella Fado. It’s not every day that a restaurant is featured on TV, so Rocco’s went all out, rolling out the red carpet and bringing in the sky-high spotlights to celebrate the occasion ahead of the show’s premiere on Sunday, February 6. As Fado explained, she’s been hosting, writing and producing “Brindiamo!” since 2004. “I wanted to create a tv show for Italians outside of Italy. It’s the story of successful Italians through food,” she said. The show primarily focuses on New York City, but she has taken it to other places like Philadelphia and Washington, to Bermuda, Canada, and of course, Italy itself. When it started, Fado says it was the only cooking show that was filmed in real kitchens with real chefs as opposed to other shows filmed in studio kitchens. But it all began with Chef Bruno Milone. A chef for 32 years, Milone got his start in Italy before coming to the U.S., working everywhere from restaurants to pastry shops and hotels. When “Brindiamo!” launched, he was the first chef featured on the show, when he worked at Brooklyn-based restaurant Marco Polo. For the show’s 10th anniversary, he appeared again, baking a special cake for the occasion. Now at new Rockaway restaurant Rocco’s, Fado followed

him to give Rocco’s some exposure and show what they’re cooking up in the kitchen. The Rocco’s episode features Rocco’s and its staff, and the main star of the show, Chef Bruno as he cooks up some of his delicious recipes, including his fresh pasta. “He is the king of homemade pasta,” Fado said. For each episode, Fado tries to invite a celebrity to help sample some of the cuisine and for this episode, they chose one of Rocco’s biggest fans—Anthony Melchiorri of the show "Hotel Impossible." As a local resident, Melchiorri has become a frequent customer at Rocco’s. “Anthony comes in here at least once or twice a week. He’s eaten all over the world and he’s said Bruno’s food is probably some of the best he’s eaten,” Rocco’s

co-owner Vinny said. Melchiorri was one of the guests in attendance at Thursday’s event featuring wine, passed appetizers and previews of “Brindiamo!” For Rocco’s, a spotlight on “Brindiamo!” is a big deal. “Bruno, our chef, is one of 50 chefs in the New York City metro area that are five-star chefs, born and trained in Italy. “Brindiamo!” goes all around the city restaurants and features different chefs and we were blessed to be selected for the show. It’s a big honor. We closed the restaurant for the night and brought in the red carpet and spotlights. This is a big thing for us,” Vinny said. Will the show give Rocco’s

a big boost? Chef Bruno says that’s hard to predict, but he knows one thing for sure—he loves cooking for Rockaway. “I don’t have a crystal ball but I’m very happy that the people of Rockaway come in and eat and they love it. I love these people here,” he said. The Rocco’s episode of “Brindiamo!” made its debut on NYC Live tv on Sunday, February 6. But there’s still another chance to tune in. The episode will be repeated this Friday night, or rather Saturday morning, February 12, at 12 a.m. on Channel 25. “Brindiamo!” is also streamed on Amazon Prime and is soon coming to new streaming service, Tubi TV. Getting a TV spot isn’t the only exciting news for Rocco’s of Roc Beach. The restaurant has quickly become a Rockaway go-to for a good meal, and the owners say it’s only going to get better. “In the summertime, we have a big treat coming for Rockaway,” Vinny said. “We’re in the process of getting the building next door, it’s almost done. We’re going to combine both yards. Bruno is not only a five-star chef, but he’s a five-star pastry chef and an expert at making gelato, so in the summer we’re going to have a gelato stand outside, as well as adding a raw oyster bar and a beer garden.” Rocco’s of Roc Beach is located at 115-10 Rockaway Beach Blvd. For menus and more info, check out www.roccoscoalovenpizza.com or call 718799-5050 to order.

Kevin Anthony Reilly (Editor’s note: Thank you and welcome aboard!)

Good Riddance Dear Editor: Since we have embarked upon the year 2022, the City has unfortunately seen the murder of members of the NYPD, seven police officers senselessly shot, a 19-year-old girl working a night shift in a Burger King, senselessly murdered after turning over all of the cash in a register to an armed thud in a robbery, a barely 12-month-old baby shot in the head by a bunch of gang bangers running the streets, a defenseless 40-year-old woman killed by having been pushed in front of a moving subway train by a mentally impaired individual roaming the subways claiming to be God, and the murder of a lady resident in a Far Rockaway apartment building. The question is: Where was former Mayor de Blasio over the past eight years of this monarchy and why did he not lift a finger or prod his Police Commissioner into attacking

the sources and preventing vicious criminals from roaming the streets with guns which led to their respective beliefs that they are above the law and are authorized to commit mayhem. And why did he impliedly authorize the bevy of homeless permitted to violently roam the subway stations used by fare paying working people when Mrs. de Blasio was funded with nearly one billion of our tax dollars for her program to treat mentally ill residents? The former Mayor should be held responsible for not only the past eight years of criminal havoc that he permitted to be reigned down upon our City but should similarly be held responsible for the mayhem that he has handed off during the 2022 year. Mayor Adams has his hands full solely as a result of the conduct (or lack thereof ) of his predecessor. I can only hope that Mayor Adams has both the common sense and ability to quell this senseless vio-

The Rockaway Times lence and to cause our City to return to a sense of normalcy such that we are not required to be bombarded on a daily basis by TV and radio newscasters with heart rendering reports of death, shootings, stabbings and gun violence against our residents. Hopefully Mayor Adams and his newly appointed staff can aggressively work to improve our City’s condition, the failure of which will only cause residents and visitors to our City to flee. S. Agramonte

By Beth Hanning It’s A Sin To Kill A Mockingbird Today I am going to start teaching Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird to my 9th grade English class. I am glad the New York City Department of Education and my school, specifically, have not yet said that this is a banned book. YET. Over the years, this novel has been the subject of debate about its racial insensitivity due to the language used in the novel. Even before cancel culture came out and everything became offensive, I always

started the novel with the explanation that, in my opinion, Harper Lee was not racist, but she used the jargon that people in the United States South would use. In my opinion, it is one of the greatest novels off all time. I enjoyed it as a teenager and fell in love with tomboy Scout. I also regard Atticus Finch as one of the greatest characters in literature. The American Film Institute must agree with me because they named

Atticus the #1 hero in films, beating out Han Solo, Indiana Jones and James Bond! I often hear myself repeating his advice: Do not judge a person until you have walked in their shoes. I also truly enjoyed his parenting style of never showing your cards. The children think they have gotten away with something and months later Atticus drops the bomb that he knew all along. Scout is mystified by his action. The thing that is so funny is the parents are complaining about this novel and saying it is offensive and insensitive. These are the same parents who probably have never checked their children’s phone or have any idea what their children are doing or saying on social media. I think many of the parents would be offended by what they or their teens do or view on social media. Another thing that has come up is the idea of feeling uncomfortable. This idea came up during Zoom sessions with my students. They and

their parents first told me they could not turn on their camera because they were uncomfortable. The first excuse was they did not want to show their homes. I said you can change your background to learn from any place in the world. The next excuse then became that they do not feel comfortable. I truly believe and have spoken to many adolescent experts that feeling uncomfortable can be a positive experience. We should teach them how to overcome the feelings and not simply ignore them. I felt uncomfortable when Sister Jean scolded me in the 6th grade for not behaving properly and I strove to not feel that way again in her class, so I behaved. So, for the next month or so, I will truly enjoy coming to class and reading and discussing my favorite novel to teach. Every year I have students inform me they have never read an entire book and enjoyed it as much as this novel, and I expect this year to be the same. Long live Harper Lee.

Steer The Ship Dear Enchantress, I am coming to you feeling so shy and overwhelmed. A really nice guy has come into my life, and I see how I am self-sabotaging and making drama where there doesn't need to be any. I am messing up our scheduled times and dates because family needs me. I get squirmy when he gives me compliments and just overall, I am feeling ugly, and I can't imagine he actually likes me. I feel like he is lying to me about liking me so much. What the hell should I do? I like him, I want this to be good, I have always wanted a boyfriend like this, and I'm being, what you call, a poopy pants. Help!

Dear Poopy Polly, Oh, dear woman! I understand and hear that your most insecure parts are getting flared up and triggered. The innocence of being appreciated and liked in a romantic situation is just that. It's an innocent part of you that is the age of 5 or 6 years old, does that feel true? Where a little girl might say "leave me alone!" to a boy that "likes" her at school. Instead of figuring this out on your own, I advise you to share it with him. Now I know that you might bug out with that suggestion, but here's the thing. You are in a relationship. It requires relating, esIf you have a question for Enpecially when it's uncomfortable, that's how to steer the chantress Shane, email her at Support@enchantedembodiship... on your own, you are not relating, and it will never go well. Here are some suggestions of how to approach this. Use your own words, here are some openers: (Part 1) "Hey, I'm feeling like a total weirdo, but I want to share with you what's going on with me..." "So getting so much attention from you is what I like, and I'm feeling uncomfortable with it and I want to feel better." Part 2 is what do you want him to do about it? ASK: After you share a part one, then you can ask him to check in with you. I like a number system. 1 = Super self-sabotaging, 10 = Relaxed. Some examples: "So, when you notice I'm pulling away, can you extra check in with me and ask me "how are you doing right now?" Again, use your words. A total ninja knows what she is feeling IRT (in real time). The point is not to feel like a ninja right away, the point is to have a system with this man, so you don't have to spiral out on your own, which brings more disconnect from him. I wish you luck, and if you're feeling super ninja show him this response! It can be fun to find updated ways to relate, especially with insecurity stuff. Everyone has it, and it shows up differently for everyone.

Show Love for TornadoRavaged Kentucky’s Autism Community Rockaway—on Saturday, February 26 at RBQ, join Rockaway Beach Autism Families (RBAF) in showing some Rockaway love to the autism community in western Kentucky, which was devastated by the tornadoes that ripped through on December 10. It's been just two months

since an EF-4 tornado, the deadliest on record in a December month, ripped through western Kentucky, leaving in its path 77 people dead and hundreds homeless. Three other tornadoes were reported in the Bluegrass State overnight, though those storms were categorized as smaller. In the days

after the tornadoes wreaked their havoc, it was heavily reported in the national news. Now two months after that fateful Saturday evening, December 10, with the national media gone silent on how counties in western Kentucky are faring today, one may assume that everything is back to normal? Well, that’s a definite no. As survivors of Hurricane Sandy, we in Rockaway and Broad Channel know all too well that rebuilding takes months, even years, with some of us having to relocate altogether. Recent news coverage reported by western Kentucky media outlets revealed how life is still far from returning to normalcy. With headlines like: “Starting over is going to be so hard': Kentucky tornado victims feeling forgotten two months after the storm,” I wondered how the autism/ special-needs community was faring. From personal experience as a parent of an autistic child, I know how disruption to the daily grind and environment can be catastrophic because most autistic individuals need routine and stability to prevent breakdowns. For them, change is deemed as threatening. I contacted nonprofit organization, Experiencing Autism Together (EAT), and after speaking with President Jessica Muensterman, placed on my heart was a strong desire to pay it forward to our western Kentucky autism family. Save the date! On Saturday, February 26, 3 p.m. to until late, Rockaway Beach Autism Families (RBAF) is hosting a fundraiser at RBQ with 50/50s, live music, presentation of a mini documentary by RBAF member, Patrick Dydzuhn, plus Jason Harvey will be vending his handcrafted St. Patrick’s Day items, just in time for parade day in Rockaway! More details to come. According to Muensterman, EAT serves the western Kentucky counties of Henderson, Union, Webster and Hopkins, where hard hitcDawson Springs is located. They have been reaching out to families to check up on them and assess their needs. She spoke of one family who evacuated to an

The Rockaway Times Airbnb, then when the tornado tore off the roof, they had to move yet again. Another family was able to finally relocate to a duplex apartment, but before that they were staying in a hotel, where their 15-year-old son was having a tough time. Muensterman said, “Besides losing all his toys and adaptive equipment in the tornado, the strangeness of the hotel environment took a toll. Basically, all his stuff went with the tornadoes, including his toys and adaptive equipment. He is terrified now, as you know with some children on the spectrum, uncertainty and changes to their daily routine is very frightening for them, and this boy was having a very tough time. Thankfully, the duplex is in close proximity to the city, and he gets to stay in his school. Insurance is helping out with some stuff, but they are still gaps. The family had a tough time getting insurance to pay for his adaptive equipment before the tornado, and now, it looks even more unlikely.” On top of dealing with the aftermath of the tornadoes, last week, Kentucky was hit by an ice storm, and the governor declared a state of emergency. “It’s all very daunting. In Dawson Springs, people are still living in their campers, which is temporary housing, but with the weather being so cold, it’s not easy,” Muensterman said. According to news reports, communities are now confronting another form of devastation—the emotional and psychological toll that comes from enduring so much loss and suffering. Folks, join RBAF in showing some Rockaway love to western Kentucky’s autism community. In the next installation of the column, learn more about Muensterman and her organization, and how she has inspired me to launch even more ground-breaking initiatives for Rockaway's autism community. Kentucky may be far, but it’s good to know that we are bound by our love and desire to see our autistic loved ones soar! For more info, visit Rockaway Beach Autism Families on Facebook/Instagram.

ACNE

By Peter Galvin, MD

Acne vulgaris affects about 9% of the worldwide population and about 85% of those aged 12 to 24 years. It also affects more than 50% of people aged 20 to 29 years and 43% of those aged 30 to 39 years. Approximately 18% of women and 8% of men develop acne after 25 years of age. Acne can negatively affect quality of life and self-esteem, and is associated with an increased risk of anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and physical scarring. Acne can take many forms, including whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, deep nodules and cysts. It can be caused by decreased skin turnover and shedding, increased production of sebum (an oily, waxy substance produced by glands to lubricate the skin), and certain types of skin bacteria. Other factors include genetics, hormones, mechanical stimulation (friction, rubbing, picking, squeezing), certain drugs (such

as corticosteroids [i.e., prednisone]), and skin care products and cosmetics. Acne commonly presents with comedones, which are dilated hair follicles filled with skin cell debris, bacteria, and sebum. Open comedones (blackheads) have a pigmented, dilated orifice that contains oxidized surface pigment, while closed comedones (whiteheads) appear as small white papules. Mild acne is treated with topical medications, some of which are available without a prescription. Topical medications are often used in combination, and side effects can include skin dryness, redness, and irritation. A common target of topical treatments is the eradication of bacteria that colonize the skin, particularly Cutibacterium acnes, or C acnes. Topical medications that target C acnes include benzoyl peroxide, clindamycin, erythromycin, and azelaic acid. Of these, benzoyl peroxide is the least expensive and most effective, plus, as it is not an antibiotic, it does not

induce antibiotic resistance. It can bleach hair and clothing, however. Other topicals include retinoids which increase skin cell turnover and decrease sebum production. Examples include adapalene, tretinoin, tazarotene, and trifarotene. The treatment of moderate and severe acne, plus mild acne that doesn’t respond to topical treatments, requires the use of stronger medications, many of which are taken orally. Antibiotics to target skin bacteria include topical (minocycline) and oral (doxycycline, minocycline, sarecycline) forms. Hormonal treatments target hormone receptors and reduce sebum production. They are available topically (clascoterone) and orally (spironolactone and certain birth control pills). Oral retinoids (isotretinoin) are reserved for the most severe and treatment-resistant forms of acne. In general, oral medications have more side effects than topical ones. Many cannot be used while pregnant or breast-feeding, and some, like oral isotretinoin,

Page 39

require blood tests to monitor for harmful side effects. Basic skin care is also helpful for acne management, including gentle skin cleansers, non-comedogenic (non-pore blocking) skin care products, and avoidance of skin scrubbing and picking. Treatment success involves both the resolution of current acne lesions and the prevention of new flares. Two to three months of consistent treatment is usually needed to assess treatment success. Because everyone responds differently to medications, treatment plans can change over time, may involve different combinations of treatment, and may require different strategies for acute flares versus long-term maintenance of clear skin. Live “I promise myself that I will enjoy every minute of the day that is given me to live.” - Thich Nhat Hanh The other day I opened up an email from one of my favorite teachers, Pema Chodron, a Buddhist nun who is revered by so many people as a warm, friendly, compassionate woman. This retreat was about coming to terms with death. Not a subject many of us would care to visit. “One day you will die and the one thing you will take with you is your state of mind.” - Pema Chodron Already many are you are saying, really? This column is meant

to be uplifting and healing. Finding life and death to be one of the same brings a state of equanimity. We begin to live better, knowing this path is one day going to end. Buddhists believe in reincarnation! Therefore, karma is a real thing. This really got me thinking about ways to live in service to others. My parish priests, Father Bill and Father Jim are in full service, doing daily acts of kindness in our community. Thank you for your selfless service. You are truly in service to God and his people. “Letting there be room for not knowing is the most important

thing of all. When there's a big disappointment, we don't know if that's the end of the story. It may just be the beginning of a great adventure. Life is like that. We don't know anything. We call something bad; we call it good. But really we just don't know.” ~ Pema Chodron The older we get, the faster life goes. Why? Perhaps because we have more wisdom and begin to treasure the moments and days. Believing in the greater good for all is the path to liberation. Can we leave the earth a better place or are we stealing from the earth? Do we know being human is an honor and we have the capacity to live with compassion and integrity? My heart believes there are so many good people. We just need to work together to help all of mankind. “Do I prefer to grow up and relate to life directly, or do I choose to live and die in fear?” Flying to one of my favorite destinations as I write this column, the choice is to live. According to one of my doctors, I am super boosted having Omicron visit my home. I welcome whatever comes my

way, but my sickness stirred up many emotions. Mostly, empathy for those who suffer daily with an illness they are battling or living with. It’s really difficult to experience pain and suffering on a regular basis. My heart and prayers go out to you. Accepting the energy you have, leads you to a sense of relief and surrender. Resistance makes us feel stuck and heavy. Sadness and disappointment are emotions that most of us deal with but do not have to identify or attach to these feelings. My practice has been to sit in quiet and digest whatever comes up without judgement or resentment. Our present situation has ignited a fire within us all, begging for a world to be free of illness and suffering. We are being forced to reconsider how we live this one precious life. Age is only a number but as we grow older, we begin to ask the question, how many years do I have left to live? Have I lived a life helping others or has it all been for myself? What is your true purpose in life? May you know your self-worth and be kind to yourself and others.

Gun Violence And A Cry For Help

By Theresa M Racine

On a very cold Saturday, violence interrupters Rock Safe Streets and others once again stood on the corner of Beach 62nd Street and Beach Channel Drive asking the public to stop gun violence. Officer Manuel Soto, only 22 years old, was recently shot there while on his way to work. The perpetrators who shot him were only 18 and 19 years of age. A botched carjacking that went terribly wrong. Gun violence, like everywhere else in the city, is on the rise. The Citizen App sometimes goes off in the Rockaways three to four times a night stating a person with a gun or a shooting has hap-

pened. On Saturday, Visol Smith, who is the Rock Safe Streets supervisor, made his message clear that he is standing outside once again to denounce gun violence in his neighborhood. Cars went by beeping to let them know we stand with them. “Rockaway, we need to do better. This is our community,” he said. Both Visol and Rosalind Mason spoke about the community rising up to denounce gun violence, and that they could not do this by themselves. Mason, who is the program director, did not hold back. Her message should have resonated with all that heard her voice at the event and on Facebook live. "Today is a different type of day,” she said, talking about the officer who got shot. He just got on the police force in December, and she reiterated his age and let everyone know he lives in the community where he was shot in the shoulder. Mason spoke on healing a broken community by bringing in more resources. In order for the

community to thrive and dream again, they will need to bring in people that are able to help with that task. "We are hiring,” she said. Mental health services as well as social workers are needed. She spoke on how people were calling on her asking, "What are we going to do?" When are we going to stand up?" Rosalind called out all the politicians and community leaders including Mayor Eric Adams.

“This was one of his officers, who got shot on the corner of Beach 62nd Street. Why are you not here?” she said At the same time, she thanked those from the other side of Queens who came and stood with the group. "Enough of Rockaway being ignored and undeserved," she said. To hear more on the call and response event, check out Rock Safe Streets on Facebook and Instagram.

Food and Beverage Insiders THE VALENTINE’S DAY FOOD AND WINE GUIDE By Natalie Crooks and James Mallios

Whether the thought of Valentine’s Day makes you cringe or beam, it can be a great excuse to spend the day eating and drinking well with your loved one. It’s a great time to head out to your favorite romantic restaurant (if you can get a reservation) or enjoy a romantic night in (which might look more like sweatpants and Netflix). I personally like to stay in, skip the gifts and splash out on rosé Champagne and Caviar, but whatever your style may be there is always a way to make it a fun, romantic and memorable night. For the romantic, always keep it classic. Traditional gifts like chocolate and roses go a long way and chocolate covered strawberries are a nice little twist on the traditional box of chocolates. For an on-the-go option,

pre-order your sweets from your favorite chocolatier or you can make them yourself! I like to use semi-sweet chocolate when making them at home, and you can add a drizzle of white chocolate if you want a fancier look. Most chocolate chips can be melted in the microwave but be sure to microwave only for 20-30 seconds at a time, stopping to stir and make sure your chocolate isn’t burning. An ideal pairing for chocolate covered strawberries is a slightly sweet style of sparkling wine, like Moscato d’Asti. You can also spring for a sweeter style of Champagne, look for labels that say demi-sec or doux. For the food and wine connoisseur in your life, go the fancy route and splash out for the classic pairing of Champagne and caviar. For budget-friendly caviar try paddlefish caviar, which has a briny and strong flavor. If you really want to

impress, purchase some sturgeon caviar for a sweeter and creamier style. Either way, you can eat caviar on its own or try it on potato chips with crème fraîche. Of course, with great caviar must come great Champagne; try Perrier Jouet to stay within budget or a bottle of Krug for a richer style. Finally, for the Valentine’s Day hater in your life, give them something they can’t say no to. Buy their favorite foods and favorite drinks and have a night in. In my opinion, the best gifts are always consumables and if you make it extra special you just might convert your partner into a Valentine’s Day lover. Sometimes pizza and beer on the couch is the quickest way to someone’s heart and those small

gestures will make anyone’s day any time of year. And for the record, you don’t need a partner to enjoy any of these things on Valentine’s Day, treat yourself to your favorite things this year because you deserve it. (James Mallios is the managing partner of Bar Marseille. He was born and raised in what he recently learned is called “North Queens” He is joined this week by colleague Natalie Crooks).

Boom! Beach Channel at the Buzzer Last Thursday on February 3, the Dolphins of Beach Channel took on the 10-3 Red Hawks of the High School for Construction Trades, Engineering, and Architecture. It was Senior Night for the seven seniors that played for Coach Rich George this year. Each senior was introduced before a packed gymnasium and the cheering for each senior only got louder as the game went on.

In a game where the Dolphins trailed throughout, the magic came alive with just under two minutes left on the clock. Trailing by 7 points with under two minutes, the Dolphins went on a run to get back in the game. With 5.5 seconds left on the clock and the Dolphins down by 1 to the Red Hawks, the ball was taken the length of the court by point guard George Hance. He ran

the play perfectly and gave it off to lefty Malakai Clarke who took it to the basket and put up the floater that would go in and win the game for the Dolphins at the buzzer. The crowd went wild and stormed the court to celebrate with the players. This ending had a magical March Madness feel and will be a game that the seniors and everyone else

will remember forever. The Dolphins would like to thank DJ’s @ Work for providing the musical entertainment for the special evening. Congratulations and best of luck to the 7 seniors: Benjamin Grant, Bryan Godette, Elijah Brown, Camilo Mendoza, Jordy Rodriguez, Emmanuel Pascall, and Isaac Davis. Go Dolphins! Fins Up!

Wrestle Talk WRESTLING NEWS By Eric Jayden

I want to say Thank You for all the support and emails I have been getting here at Wrestle Talk these past months and please keep sending those questions and feedback to eavil183@yahoo.com Let's dive into some wrestling news: Big news is flying all over the place and the latest news is that former WWE Superstar Keith Lee is apparently heading to All Elite Wrestling (AEW). Now, this is still a rumor but my sources have told me that the two sides have been in talks about a possible contract. Staying with Keith Lee, I would like to extend my congrats and best wishes on his marriage to Mia Yim. Former WWE superstar The Boogeyman has tweeted on his Twitter account that he has signed a contract with the WWE. Now, it appears this contract

might be a Legends Contract. The Boogeyman was last seen working for the WWE from 2004 to 2009 and I'm sure fans of the Boogeyman will be happy to see him back on WWE Television. As previously reported here on Wrestle Talk, about the possible sale of the WWE. Well, it appears that WWE Executive Nick Khan has been reportedly taking phone calls from prospective buyers interested in purchasing the WWE. This

shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. As I have been discussing lately, the WWE has been setting itself up for sale this past year with the release of many employees and talent from the company. Now the big question is, who has been calling Nick Khan? Is it NBC/Peacock or Disney, who knows but eventually we will find out and when we do we will report it here. Fans who were happy to see former WWE Superstar Kurt

Angle at this year’s Royal Rumble, and were expecting to see more of Kurt Angle, are going to be disappointed. The reports say the Angle after the Royal Rumble was supposed to work a program on WWE Television for about three weeks. At the very last moment, those plans were cancelled and no other plans for seeing Kurt Angle on WWE Television have surfaced. The former Olympian and WWE Champion spoke on his podcast about his program being canceled and also didn't offer any hints of a return. Kurt is not signed to the WWE. I received a great question from reader and supporter, Rich Embree, which was, "Do I believe Unions should be part of the wrestling business" Stay tuned to next week's column as I dive in depth into this question. Questions/Comments send them to eavil183@yahoo.com and have a great weekend!
