Congratulations to the Parade Honorees
Parade day is coming quick! There’s just a little more than two weeks ‘til the Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day Parade and this past Saturday, February 12, celebrations kicked off with the installation of this year’s honorees at the annual dinner dance at Antun’s in Queens Village. At Saturday’s formal event, parade president Michael Benn introduced this year’s honorees. The procession of honorees were led into Antun’s by pipers from the County Tyrone Pipe Band.
David Lee and Sheila Cassidy performed the Irish and United States’ National Anthems before the honorees were seated at the dais in front of the crowd. Mayor Eric Adams was welcomed to share a few words of encouragement before the honorees were asked to speak. This year’s honorees include Grand Marshal, John Samuelsen, International President of the Transport Workers Union; Gael of the Year, Paul Mannix of the FDNY; Honorary Grand Marshals, Senator Joe Addab-

After speeches, the dance floor was open as the Celtic Justice Band played some tra-
ditional Irish tunes. A grand time was had by all. The parade will be held on Saturday, March 5 at 1 p.m., starting at Beach 130th and Newport Avenue. The day will begin with a Mass at 9 a.m. for Peace and Justice in Ireland at Saint Francis De Sales Church. Paul King for Congress Launches Campaign Website
Rep. Gregory Meeks is going to have some competition. On Thursday, February 10, local resident Paul King announced his run for congress as a republican. King, a member of Community Board 14 and president of the Belle Harbor Property Owners Association, is already jumping into campaign efforts. The committee working to elect Paul King as Rockaway’s next Congressman launched
its website on Tuesday. The address is paulkingforcongress. com. The site’s main theme is “The American Dream for Every American.” The website, under construction, will include a biography of Mr. King, reasons why people in the district should vote for him to replace current Congressman Gregory Meeks, and links for volunteers and donors. The biography page will have a link to Mr. King’s personal site, Our Flag Is Still There or flagstillthere.us. The Plans menu with Mr. King’s platform will be published in March. The campaign’s Facebook page also went live on Tuesday (Paul King for Congress.) Questions about the campaign can be directed to Margaret Powers at president@ paulkingforcongress.com.

Road Report Sometimes you write a column and you only learn how dumb you were after people read the thing. I mentioned last week that I took a ride with a stranger into Mexico and how the border patrol police ordered us out of the van while they inspected it. I failed to mention, my new friend, Philip, was wearing a parka. As my brother said, just what you need in Mexico, a parka. You didn’t think that was suspicious? The guy was in his 70s, so I just figured he was always cold. I’m now thinking the van and the cardboard boxes inside could have been diversions,
the contraband might have been in the lining of his bubble coat. Stupid of me. But the guy kinda looked liked Henry Fonda. How could I not trust Mr. Roberts or gramps from On Golden Pond? Anyway, I got out of Mexico and Columbus, New Mexico without a scratch. Some 44 miles later, I stopped in town named Hachita, population: hardly anybody. It was just short of a ghost town, with an abandoned church, derelict houses and no signs of life except for one or two barking dogs trying to get at you from behind a chain link fence. It was a sad place that could’ve used a shot
but even the bar was boarded up. On the main street, the only one that was paved, a basketball court in pretty fair shape, stood out because, well, it was in pretty fair shape and made you ask what it was doing there. The place had small, colorless – even by adobe standards-– houses mixed in with abandoned trailers and vehicles turning into dusty plants. You couldn’t really tell which places were occupied except for those with dogs. In the much-acclaimed travel book “Blue Highways,” written in 1982, the author, William Least Heat-Moon, said the word for this town was remote. Forty years later, it was more so. While New York was freezing, I finally crossed the Arizona border, which wasn’t anything different than the last 200 miles but it had a sign: Welcome to Arizona. I rolled into an old mining town called Bisbee and kinda fell in love with the place. It had an art scene and a nice collection of oddballs. And the place has all these cool public staircases because most

of the homes are built into the side of various hills. And maybe I fell in love because it had a dive bar named St. Elmo’s. And it was such a dive, I fit in like a local. Most of the time when I’m out on the road, I’m too self-conscious about my New York accent. I think every interaction is going to be tainted. I expect people to frown or roll their eyes ever so slightly when they make me out as a New Yorker. Or worse, they won’t understand what I’m saying¬–which wasn’t the case in this dive bar. I cracked a few lines about Bisbee, the bar, whatever – nothing that would have gotten me a standup gig but just a couple of knowing smirks. Instead, I got this guy howling and every time I made him laugh, he put out a fist for a fist bump. After the third or fourth time, I wanted to use my fist alright. I had another beer, felt like a coalminer, and then left. PS: the cool staircases weren’t so cool, not when you have 128 steps to go after leaving a dive bar.

The community is in mourning after 10-year-old Davina Afokoba was killed in a car accident in Far Rockaway last week. Afokoba was walking home from school on Beach Channel Drive near Dix Ave with her two siblings on Wednesday, February 9, when she was struck by a black Mazda driven by an unlicensed 35-year-old driver. Officers from the 101st Precinct responded to the scene and found the young girl pinned between the car and a former car wash building. When EMS arrived, she was declared dead on the scene. Another 33-year-old pedestrian was also injured but is expected to survive. Surveillance video shows the driver was trying to make a turn onto Beach Channel Drive when
she accelerated and slammed into the building, striking pedestrians. The driver may face charges as investigations continue. Davina was a fifth-grade student at Challenge Charter School in Far Rockaway. She is the second student to die tragically in the past year after 10-year-old Justin Wallace was killed due to gun violence in June. Memorials for Davina have started to form at the school. The school described Davina as a bright student who loved dancing and art. Some of her artwork now decorates the door to her classroom. Grief counseling services are being offered at Challenge Charter. Following the incident, Senator James Sanders released a statement saying, “We need to do all we can to prevent reckless driving and fatal collisions. Davina Afokoba should be with us today, celebrating life with her family and friends, but instead they are planning her funeral. My thoughts and prayers are with them during this very difficult time." Davina’s mother, Priscilla Afokoba has launched a GoFundMe to help cover funeral costs. To donate, search for “Help For Davina Afokoba’s Family” on GoFundMe.com or head to: https://gofund.me/c7818eba A funeral service for Davina was held on Wednesday, February 16.

The Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Park Conservancy,(JBRPC) the NYC Plover Project, the National Park Service and Assemblywoman Stacey Amato’s office joined forces in this effort. The volunteers learned about endangered birds, like the piping plover, and ways to protect their nesting habitat while doing the critical cleanup.

Broad Channel Hubs Get Resiliency Upgrades The Broad Channel American Legion Hall Post 1404 and Broad Channel Athletic Club recently got some much-needed resiliency upgrades. On Thursday, February 10, local elected officials gathered at the BCAC for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of $5.5 million in upgrades that will help them be better able to withstand future storms. Among the officials who joined were Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin, the Governor's Office of Storm Recovery (GOSR) Executive Director Katie Brennan, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, Assemblymember Stacey Pheffer Amato, Senator Joe Addabbo, Dan Mundy and others. The upgrades come after Hurricane Sandy caused severe flooding in Broad Channel. During the storm, the American Legion Hall and Athletic Club served as crucial gathering points for residents to assist one another and distribute food and supplies — despite damages the
storm inflicted on these facilities. Among the upgrades were: Installation of permanent back-up power generators that are elevated above flood-level at both facilities. The generators will automatically start functioning when needed and are equipped with flood venting and leak detection; Construction of a new building at the Athletic Club with meeting space, storage capacity, and power equipment to enable the facility to provide outdoor relief services; Installation of flood-resistant doors at the Legion Hall as well as elevated mechanical and electrical systems to help
avoid outages during flooding events; and upgrades to the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system at the Legion Hall so that the facility can act as a heating/cooling center for the community during extreme weather conditions. The project was completed in partnership with the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY). "This ribbon cutting ceremony is cause for celebration here in Broad Channel. This community was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy, and to be able to now say that we have more resiliency measures in place means they will be better protected from future storms,” State Senator Joseph Addabo, Jr. said. “I want to thank the Broad Channel community for their persistence in getting these measures in place, and Governor Hochul and all the government agencies that worked to advance this project. I look forward to working further here in Broad Channel to bring additional resiliency measures
to keep this community and its residents safe." "Superstorm Sandy decimated our community. It's been a long road to recovery, but we had a united front and worked together to reach this accomplishment. We are thankful for Governor Hochul's fierce support for storm recovery and know that the Governor's Office of Storm Recovery will continue to work with the resilient people of Broad Channel and all other communities affected by these dramatic storms,” Assemblymember Stacey Pheffer-Amato said. "By ensuring the Broad Channel American Legion Hall Post 1404 and Broad Channel Athletic Club, two critical hubs of this South Queens community, are more resistant to flooding, government is taking a proactive approach toward supporting and empowering Broad Channel families if and when another major storm strikes,” Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, Jr. said.

THE ROCKAWAY TIMES PHOTO CONTEST OPENS! WIN $500 It’s that time of year! The Seventh Annual Rockaway Times Photo Contest is taking off and sure to soar. And you might say, this year’s contest is for the birds. Well, not exactly but there is a focus on our feathered friends. As you know, there’s no doubt, Rockaway’s Got Talent and we like to put the spotlight on peninsula shutterbugs. As we’ve done in years past, The Top 30 photos selected are made poster-size and put on display on the boardwalk. And some honorable mentions get placed at the ferry dock. Of the Top 30 this year, five will feature birds spotted in Rockaway, Broad Channel or Jamaica Bay. Other than birds, there will be no categories, so all great photos will be considered. The winning photographer wins a $500 Grand Prize and everlasting bragging rights. You don’t have to be a professional, you just have to take a great photo! Ok, now the IMPORTANT STUFF: Deadline: NOON, Friday, April 15. One of the contest sponsors, The Jamacia Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, seeks to promote its educational programs and highlight the wonder of avian life. JBRPC hopes Rockaway photographers will snap photos of shorebirds, snowy owls, egrets, swans, ospreys, and various migratory birds so the spotlight shines on the creatures who live among us. Other than the focus of birds, there are no set categories. You can submit a photo of your adorable pet, but it will compete against sunsets, parades, wildlife, surfers, you name it. Judges will only consider pics that convey a local theme. You are allowed to submit up to FOUR (4) photos. They must be high resolution (some of those phone photos just don’t cut it; resist sending fuzzy outof-focus pics) and the photos must be of Rockaway, Breezy Point or Broad Channel or on the ferry or from the ferry. This
is The Rockaway Times Photo Contest and we’re sure your vacation photos are great but we’re sticking to a Rockaway theme. You must submit your name (or the name of the photographer) and, please know that The Rockaway Times may use any of the photos as we see fit (in the paper, and/or Summer Guide, Facebook, etc). We will give photo credit, but we will have full rights to the photo. And please, only send photos you have taken or have rights to or permission to use. Important: Send to the CORRECT email address. Submit your top photos to Contest@ Rockawaytimes.com We will still print our Local Color feature each week but that’s a separate email and contest photos sent there cannot be considered. Contest tip: We know we’ll get lots and lots of beautiful sunsets and sunrises but that means it’ll be tough for your photo to really stand out. Maybe your picture of kids on the beach or a great boardwalk scene or something that screams “That’s Rockaway!” will be the one that captures the judges’ eyes. And remember, send only your top 4 (or fewer!). We’re thrilled to have our co-sponsors back for this year’s contest. The Jamaica Bay– Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) NYC-Ferry, and NYC Parks help make this one of the summer’s great events. So go snap away, Rockaway. The Photo Contest is now airborne.

A Look Back at the Wingfoots By Katie McFadden
As the Los Angeles Rams come off their Super Bowl victory, we thought it was a good time to celebrate some of Rockaway’s local football history. On social media, Betty Schmeelk recently shared a blast from the past that not many, besides those in the photos and their families, may know about—The Rockaway Wingfoot Athletic Club. The old photos from the late ‘30s and mid ‘40s were shared with Betty by Robert Leich, whose stepfather, Arthur Carcanis, was a Wingfoot and whose family, from 1925 until 1962, owned the old Newport Inn (now The Harbor Light), where the Wingfoot’s Grogan The 1938 Jr. Wingfoot Football Team. Top Row: McWalters, Tracey, Tom O’Brien, ly breakfast gatherings. We Meade, Ballou, ?. reached out to Leich who gave us a rundown of the fascinating history of this social group that found an escape through sports between The Great Depression and World War II. Historical information on the Wingfoots is limited. Not even a Google search turns up any results. But the stories live within the families of the Wingfoot players, and the proof remains within a few photos. According to Leich, who says his information was gathered in snippets from two Wingfoot senior players and their children, “The Wingfoots started in Rockaway as a senior male social fraternity that supported youth sports, sometime in the middle 1920s.” All races and religions were welcome. In fact, there were few requirements to join but living in Rockaway was one of them, you had to be 30 or under, and you likely had to know somebody. “You had to be nominated and voted into the group,” Leich said. He explained that At a 1946 Grogan breakfast. Outside U: 1. ? 2. Aubury 3. Marks (George) 4. O'Brien (Tom) 5. Blum (Billy) the Wingfoots were made up 6. Schmeelk ( Dick) 7. Maloney 8. ? 9. A LOOK BACK AT THE WINGFOOTS Continued from Page 14 York Athletic Club’s foot with wings on it. This may cause some confusion as NYAC also happens to have a team called Wingedfoot. But in Rockaway, the Wingfoots took off. “The senior men’s group expanded when they formed the Wingfoot senior players (high school graduates up to 30 years old),” Leich said. And with that, there were three groups—the Wingfoot senior members, senior players, and junior players. And that’s when the monthly Father Grogan breakfasts at the Newport Inn began. “They raised money at Father Grogan breakfasts for the football team,” shared Schmeelk, whose uncle was a Wingfoot. The photo at the Newport Inn, as seen in this story, was taken by the resident Newport Inn photographer, who lived on the second floor of the restaurant. “He would be used by
Page 15
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2022 the restaurant to record restaurant memories such as the Wingfoot breakfast picture for twenty some odd years,” Leich said. But today, photos are limited, aside from what families might have. “All pictures of the group were destroyed in the Newport Inn with Hurricane Donna in the early ‘60s,” Leich said. The Newport Inn wasn’t the Wingfoot’s only hangout. The group that came to be known as The Rockaway Wingfoot Athletic Club was headquartered on Beach 116th Street in a building formally occupied by the American Legion Clubhouse ‘til the late 1930s. The Hotel Commodore, which used to be on Beach 127th Street, was another Wingfoot hotspot. “The senior men’s group, both senior members (non-players) and senior players, had dinner dances at the Hotel Commodore about four times a year,” Leich said. Along with the social aspect came the sports, of course. “The sports offered, that both seniors and juniors played,
had coaches, training sessions, and official game play,” Leich said. Some sport offerings came and went but football, baseball and basketball were consistent. Track lasted less than two or three years and swimming was only around for about a year and a half. Leich says it’s because facilities were hard to come by. “Not everybody was open to the group getting to use their facilities for official game play. Playland allowed the Wingfoots to use their pool for play for a year and a half until eminent domain removed the pool. Track was performed on the beach, but it had no audience. Football was played at the American Legion field in the Beach 90s. I have got to believe it was not tackle. Baseball was played opposite Riis Park in a grassy field bayside around Beach 160th Street (?). Riis Park would not allow any playing on their property, deeming it City of New York property, not Rockaway property. Far Rockaway High School did not co-
operate either. The pool between 114th St. and 115th St. offered but it was too small,” Leich explained. Of some notable members, Leich says, “I think Walter Patterson was president of the Rockaway Wingfoot Athletic Club in the thirties. He was referred to as the ‘grandpa’ of the club. Gary Schmeelk, John Demilein, and Bill Casey were three of the Wingfoot stars.” According to Leich, as WWII began, the Wingfoots disbanded in 1941. After the war, they tried to get it going again, but this effort was short-lived. “They tried to reorganize in 1946 by playing junior and seniors together. This reorganization lasted about two years,” Leich said. “Then the Wingfoot era was over, lasting about eighteen years.” Despite what he knows, Leich says many questions are still unanswered. If anyone can fill in the gaps or identify anyone else in the photos, feel free to email us at editor@rockawaytimes.com or give us a call at 718-634-3030.

Memorial Circle Needs YOU! For a Facelift By Katie McFadden
On Memorial Day, May 30, 1947, a group of women dedicated a park on Beach 121st Street with 33 trees, each representing a man from Rockaway who made the ultimate sacrifice and lost their life during World War II. The women, who were wives, mothers, aunts, cousins, neighbors and friends of the young men, were determined to keep their memory alive, by creating a place to bring solace and comfort to their families—Memorial Circle. As we approach the 75th anniversary of that dedication, it’s about time Memorial Circle got a facelift. The Friends of Memorial Circle, are hoping the community can help in this effort. Two years after WWII ended, the ladies of the Belle Harbor Garden Club created Memorial Circle, located along Rockaway Beach Blvd. between Beach 121st and Beach 120th Streets. With a Memorial Day ceremony that included decorating the trees with floral tributes, a prayer, a reading of the names of the servicemembers that gave their life and playing of taps, the circular park was officially opened to the public. Today, a similar ceremony is held every Memorial Day at Memorial Circle, also known as Veterans’ Circle. Memorial Circle is an open park that people pass every day on foot and in their cars, and for years, those folks who pass by have found it to be well maintained. The ladies of the Belle Harbor Garden Club initially took charge with the help of the Jewish War Veterans, but as that generation got older and passed, the park started to be neglected. That was until around 1991, when a group of neighbors took it under their care—Friends of Memorial Circle. In 2004, the Friends of Memorial Circle entered into an official partnership with the Department of Parks and Recreation, which owns the land,
to maintain the park. But it is the local neighbors that put most of the work into making sure Memorial Circle serves as a place that continues to honor those WWII veterans, as well as three additional local fallen servicemembers who have died since then. Memorial Day 2022 will mark 75 years since Memorial Circle came to be and in honor of this special occasion, Friends of Memorial Circle, with the help of community donations and Lisena Garden Center, are giving the park a facelift. “We’ve been maintaining the park for about 30 years now and we’ve never made any major changes to the area other than putting in planters and replacing trees that died or got knocked over,” Maureen Walsh, a Friend of Memorial Circle said. “So we got together with Lisena and they created a plan for us to do a major renovation. This is the first major renovation in 75 years.” Walsh described some details. “The southside will be a complete remake of the area and the north side, where the plaque is, we’re going to cut down the big green bush and take out the planters and make it look like welcoming arms where the two benches are, and we’re going to have showy perennials so you can see them from the other side of
the street,” Walsh said. “In past years, we had been putting in annuals, but you can’t really see them unless you’re walking by. Lisena advised us that we really want something showy so that when people are going by in cars or by bike, they see it.” In addition to Lisena, Walsh says Nadia Murphy, a Friend of Tribute Park, offered some floral suggestions that would stand out, such as bright pinks, whites and yellows that pop. “We’re not using too much red because it fades into the background,” Walsh said. All of the memorial trees will remain. Lisena helped them come up with a general idea of the design and provided some renderings, but all details are still being fine-tuned. However, they hope to start getting to work in early March, so time is of the essence to help fund the renovation that is estimated to cost $15,000. Sometime after Hurricane Sandy, Friends of Memorial Circle became a 501c3 organization, which helps them apply for grants, however grants are not always easy to come by, so they’re asking for the community’s help. Walsh began fundraising efforts a few weeks ago and says they’re halfway to their goal with more than $8,000 raised, but they’re hoping to have all of the funding needed by March 1. “We just need
another 70 people to donate $100,” Walsh said. In their fundraising efforts, Walsh says they’ve also received notes from people who shared how important the park is. She recently received a note from someone who, now retired, said they would walk past Memorial Circle daily on their way to the subway. “One of the pleasurable parts of my daily commute was walking past Memorial Circle, a small, beautiful park offering a respite from the city streets,” the note read, adding the importance of having the park especially around Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Walsh says that’s what it’s all about. “It has to remind people that freedom isn’t free. There’s a cost to defend freedom. Mike Honan, a veteran and neighbor who has been with us forever, has been invaluable in keeping an eye on the area,” Walsh said. “We’re very proud of the way the Circle looks. In recent years we added a garden and got a sprinkler system, but now we just want to give it a little oomph.” To help in the effort of giving Memorial Circle a facelift, donations can be made in a few ways. All checks can be made out to Friends of Memorial Circle, and can be mailed to Friends of Memorial Circle, PO Box # 940174, Rockaway Park Post Office, Rockaway Park, NY 11694. Digital donations can be made through Venmo at @Mowo119, under the Businesses tab. Anyone who would like to drop off cash can connect with Maureen by calling her at 718-9455512

The Wintering Birds Of Jamaica Bay
Snow Geese Story and Photos By Theresa Racine
Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is always a pleasure to visit. This past Saturday, I just wanted to get out and enjoy the fresh air and do some photography. The life of an endemic in my opinion, still strikes uncertainty on what is next. So, escaping to the fresh air where the snow geese fly effortlessly through the air brings a sense of freedom to your soul. I call Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge; a place of refuge from the world outside of the norm. Our secret little hideaway. Perhaps you know about this place or just drive by it and say one day I will visit. If you haven’t been, you should visit soon. The day I went, it was 60 degrees outside, a beautiful day. The next day was supposed to have a snow storm, when the Jamaica Bay rangers were planning on having an owl Superbowl program. That is another thing I love about this place. Even in the winter, they do
tours and you can learn about the different wildlife such as wintering birds. I started birding over there around three years ago. I was one of those people who said, “One day I must go.” When I saw all the different birds in the spring that migrated, I was so excited. Last year during the pandemic, I put my boots and cleats on and went for a walk. This year I actually started seeing what they call “Wintering Birds.” Many bird species regularly migrate — mostly north and south between breeding and wintering grounds — to take advantage of available resources and favorable conditions at each location. I was able to see the snow geese and some Canadian geese. A few swans that stayed behind. A variety of unique looking ducks. And I saw other birding people. That is a great way to identify a bird you might not know—just ask someone else. They were looking at a Great Blue Heron standing in the

brush. So what might you see this winter if you decide to go? I took pictures of a Bufflehead, The Hooded Merganser, Red breasted Merganser, and a picture of what appears to be singing The Great Cormorant. So next time you pass this amazing place, bring a pair of
binoculars, or a very good camera and begin shooting away. I would say this is the secret Rockaway getaway. Enjoy nature. Bring your children to teach them about nature and not to mention, it's a great way to exercise. The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is location at 175-10 Cross Bay Blvd, just after Broad Channel.

A Night for Team Sister Strong The Team Sister Strong LLS Raffle was a big success. On Friday, February 11, locals gathered at Bungalow Bar for a drawing of a $10K raffle to raise money for Team Sister Strong. After 400 tickets were sold, ticketholders and others who wanted to pay it back toward Bungalow Bar for their generous donation toward Team Sister Strong, came out for a night of drinks, 50/50s, music by DJ Rob and the big drawing for $10,000, and 17 smaller cash prizes. The night was all about Team Sister Strong, as local resident Julia O’Sullivan is running for 2022 Student of the Year for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, in honor of her sister, Siobhan, who defeated leukemia. Julia, Siobhan and Team Sister Strong teammate Rocco Pisani, who is in maintenance for leukemia, were all on hand for the drawing. Especially during these days of extremely low inventory levels there are a number of local brokers who don’t like to co-broke. Some of them resist co-broking even in times of normal inventory levels. However, these same brokers frequently call to show my listings to their clients thus ASKING ME to co-broke – not exactly the “golden rule.” I always act in the best interest of my clients. Nevertheless, it is tempting to teach the non-cobrokers a lesson and throw their own words back at them. What would you do? Here are a few of the comments I hear from brokers who don’t want to co-broke. It’s real interesting when these com-

If anything changes, I’ll certainly let you know.” “The seller has a handshake deal with a buyer and is waiting for the buyer to sell his existing home.” (For months! By the way). There’s an accepted offer and the house is about to go into contract.” Do you believe the above excuses? If so, I have a bridge that I can sell you real cheap! Often, the listing remains on the market for many weeks after one of these comments thus adding to the suspicion that the broker was not truthful. Call me. Love, Robin

Against The Wind Just came back from a beach walk on this warm, windy, sunny Saturday. Took my boots off and walked in the sand. Meet the day, whatever it brings: on February 12th, barefoot! I was walking west from where the wind was blowing. I walked against it. I could still move through even though the wind was strong. It was not a block but a deterrence and just uncomfortable. I thought: if we look at a difficulty in our lives in this way,
Page 31
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2022
we can move through it, so it doesn’t become a block or something that freezes us. We don’t have to be stuck and immobile. We can see the difficulty as uncomfortable space we have to move through and beyond. What may seem to be a brick wall, is not a brick wall at all. It is like walking against the wind. There is space, if we just see it and feel it. And when we get far enough through understanding and feeling what’s up, we can change direction.
We can turn around. We can change our gaze. And when we do that, we feel the wind at our backs helping us to move forward. I love this because it really is to me a true representation of moving through difficulties. Putting ourselves in a place where we get help from our own inner guidance by changing the direction of thought and feelings. When we change where our attention is, that’s where the energy goes. That’s the first step. And then, when we create an intention in our minds and drop it into our hearts, energy follows that intention. The manifestation may not be in the timeframe we imagine, but sooner or later the energy of this intention causes a shift. This I know from experience. Focused, pointed, heartfelt intention (not just a mind wish) to get through the wind of difficulty and to transform it. “Two people have been living in you all your life. One is the mind, busy, demand-
ing, calculating, the other is the heart, whose still voice of wisdom you have only rarely heard or attended to. As you listen more and more, and integrate your heart into your life, your inner voice, your innate wisdom of discernment. . . is awakened and strengthened, and you start to begin to distinguish between its guidance and the various clamoring and enthralling voices of mind. The memory of your real nature, with all its splendor and confidence, begins to return to you.” - Adapted from The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying). When we remember to navigate through our lives from our real natures, and not from the storied mind, it’s just easier and we will not be walking against the wind, rather with the wind at our backs gently pressing us forward to life. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you be compassionate. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Far Rock Man Convicted in Brutal 2012 Murder A murderer who tried to hide a body amid the Hurricane Sandy-destroyed beach in 2012, has been convicted. According to a press release, on Thursday, February 10, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that Thyron Aycock, 48, has been convicted at trial of murder for the brutal beating death of Shawn Rucker. The victim’s remains were discovered by park employees clearing garbage and debris from the damaged sand dunes of the beach in Far Rockaway following Hurricane Sandy. District Attorney Katz said, “In the days following the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, park workers saw an elbow sticking out of the sand. The victim in this case had been stuffed in a garbage bag by his killer. Despite the 10 years that have passed since this brutal killing, our Office pursued this case – investigating and prosecuting – and today the jury found the defendant guilty of murder. He now faces a lengthy term of incarceration when the presiding judge
sentences him in the coming weeks.” Aycock, of Far Rockaway, Queens, was found guilty of murder in the second degree. A jury deliberated for two hours before rendering a verdict. Queens Supreme Court Justice Cassandra Mullen, who presided at trial, set sentencing for March 8, 2022, at which time Aycock faces up to 25 years-to-life in prison. According to trial records, Aycock lived with his girlfriend and her ex-boyfriend, Rucker, in Far Rockaway. Sometime between November 5 and November 7 of 2012, Aycock demanded Mr. Rucker leave the home. That’s when the two men became embroiled in an argument that turned physical. Aycock struck

the 32-year-old victim at least eight times in the head with a hammer. Mr. Rucker died as a result blunt force trauma and chest compressions. According to trial testimony, Aycock then made attempts to dismember Rucker’s body. There were lacerations to Rucker’s wrist and his left thigh had a gapping cut to the bone. His body was bound with a very distinctive patterned cloth and he was stuffed in a garbage bag and buried on the beach. On November 15, 2012, according to trial testimony, workers with the City Department of Parks were clearing garbage from the vicinity of Beach 13th Street in Far Rockaway, Queens, when they saw an elbow sticking out of the sand and discovered the remains of Mr. Rucker. Trial testimony revealed that during the investigation, police executed a Court-authorized search of the defendant’s home where they recovered a knife with the victim’s blood on it. A saw was also found and was fo-
rensically-matched to the deep thigh wound of the victim. A bedsheet with the same distinctive pattern as the cloth used to bind the victim was also in the home. The defendant, however, was not apprehended until roughly seven years later when he admitted to a friend that he had killed someone and gave very detailed information about the homicide. That friend contacted the police. Senior Assistant District Attorney Jonathan Selkowe, of the District Attorney’s Homicide Bureau, prosecuted the case, with the assistance of Assistant District Attorney Mia Piccininni, of Felony Trial Bureau I, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorneys Peter McCormack III and John Kosinski, Senior Deputy Bureau Chiefs of Homicide, Karen Ross, Deputy Bureau Chief of Homicide and under the overall supervision of Executive Assistant District Attorney of Major Crimes Daniel Saunders.

Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Recently I read a biography that I would like to share with you. It is the story of James McCune Smith, MD, the first U.S. Black physician. He has been called the foremost Black intellectual of the 19th century. He was fluent in French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Latin, and Spanish and was the author of over 100 articles on ethnology, geography, and medicine. His abolitionist works have intrigued scholars in African American studies, literature, and history, and his writings inspired a 2018 prize-winning short story collection. Smith pioneered early research on the relationship between social disadvantage and health outcomes, a topic still relevant today as evidenced by differences in Covid outcomes in Black and brown communities versus more affluent communities.
An Amazing Life Smith was born a slave on April 18, 1813, in NYC to Lavinia Smith, an enslaved Black woman from South Carolina and Samuel Smith, a White merchant slave-owner. Young Smith lived free but in fear that slave-hunters would recapture them both. He labored as a bonded blacksmith six days a week and studied Greek and Latin on nights and weekends to prepare for college. He was legally freed at age 14 after New York passed the Emancipation Act on July 14, 1827. He graduated with honors from African Free School No. 2, founded by a White abolitionist to prove that Black people could equal White people intellectually. Despite his academic aptitude, he was denied admission to medical school at both Geneva Medical School and Columbia University because he was Black. He was accepted to the University of Glasgow and graduated with a BA in 1835, MA in 1836, and MD in 1837, either at or near
the top of every class, mastering astronomy, math, anatomy, botany, chemistry, medicine, midwifery, and surgery. Upon his return to NYC in 1839, he opened a medical practice, pharmacy, and evening school to teach geography, literary skills, and math to people of all races. His lectures in NYC and Philadelphia debunked phrenology, a racist pseudoscience that posited that the brain was a collection of organs, each having a separate function; that the brain acquired contours in proportion to talents developed through exercising or “working” that organ; and that an individual’s intellectual capacity could be determined by measuring the skull’s dimensions rather than testing specific mental abilities. In 1846, the Colored Orphan Asylum hired Smith to care for the nearly 200 children in residence because one in 20 children were dying from measles,
smallpox, and tuberculosis. A transportation company denied him passage on its streetcars because he was Black, so he walked the nearly 7 miles daily until the Asylum provided him with a conveyance. He remained on staff there until his death. In 1840, he wrote the first case report by a Black U.S. physician, titled “Case of Ptyalism with Fatal Termination”. Because of discrimination, he was unable to present the paper, so a White colleague presented it to the New York Medical and Surgical Society, who also found Smith qualified but rejected his membership because he was Black. One can only wonder at his determination, shared by others of his time and social situation, as he pressed on and succeeded in life despite being stymied at every turn by ignorant individuals. ADDABBO, DOF TO HOST NOTICE OF PROPERTY VALUE INFO WEBINAR State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. is partnering with the NYC Department of Finance (DOF) to promote the agency’s Notice of Property Value virtual outreach sessions to his constituents this month. On Thursday, February 24, at 4 p.m., residents can log on to the virtual for an information session presented by representatives from DOF to get information regarding their Notice of Property Value statement. Participants at the NOPV event will learn: About their market and assessed values; How their taxes are calculated; How to change their property’s description; and How to save with property tax exemptions and abatements. “Many residents have questions regarding their property values this time of year,” Add-
abbo said. “It is vital that homeowners are up to date on their property values so they know what they owe. I want to thank the Department of Finance for their continued partnership and helping my constituents and residents across the city, especially during these tough times.” This will be an informational session. The sessions are designed to provide constituents with resources and tools they need to submit inquiries and proactively research their property value and tax concerns. Only those who attend these virtual information session will have the ability to contact DOF for a follow up session where they can discuss their personal matters related to their NPOV statement. Wrestle Talk UNIONIZATION, IS IT TIME??? By Eric Jayden
Unionization, a topic we have previously discussed here on Wrestle Talk and now as I see numerous talent releases, companies that have shut down, injuries and no compete clauses, and to further add that wrestling talent has no say in how they are used and not used......you know what, the pro wrestling business is primed for unionization and here's why: Professional wrestlers are classified as "Independent Contractors" and for the majority of wrestlers that are signed to contracts, they are not afforded the rights or protections given to actual employees of a company. For years, there have been talks about creating a Union for Professional Wrestlers and efforts to organize unfortunately had never materialize. As an "Independent Contractor," professional wrestlers are not afforded Healthcare
Plans, Standardized Pay and many of the protections offered by state and federal Labor Laws. For example, if a wrestler gets sick, then he or she is responsible for their own medical expenses, Another example is if the wrestler requires time off for an emergency or personal issue, he or she can be either denied the time off or take the time off without pay because there are no sick days. Basically, not being entitled to the protections of programs like the Family Emergency Leave Act that is afforded to many full time and part time employees across the nation. Professional wrestlers, also in many situations, must work long hours and endure many days of travel without having consecutive days off like regular employees do. Those who have sought the creation of a Union wanted those same protections regular employee have. But those attempts were met with opposition from vari-
ous major wrestling promotions throughout the years, with one of them being the WWE. The WWE has always been the top wrestling company that has opposed unionization by their signed talent, even releasing one of their female talent, a day after she posted that she supported Unionization of Pro Wrestlers. The classification of independent contractor is a subject that has been in the news media before with many politicians speaking against companies having workers labeled as or using the term independent
contractors in an attempt to avoid providing Healthcare and Job Protections. In my opinion, having a National Union for Professional Wrestlers just like professional actors have, will be greatly beneficial so they are provided with the protections of job safety, rate of pay equality, healthcare and retirement plans. Since pro wrestling runs throughout the year and has no off-season, having a union negotiate reasonable time off would be essential to the health and well-being of the professional wrestler. To unionize or not, that indeed is the question, and can it happen. Will it happen right? Only time will tell. What's your opinion should wrestlers unionize? Send me your opinion at eavil183@yahoo.com and let's talk about it. Also keep those questions coming in and I'll see you next week.
