BCD Expected to Reopen by Memorial Day By Katie McFadden

There many be an end in sight for the Beach Channel Drive closure around Beach 108th Street. Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder announced on Friday that National Grid will be taking on the repairs as opposed to the city, and the work is expected to be complete by the end of May 2016. The stretch of road was closed unexpectedly on December 31, 2015 and has been closed ever since, without any word on when it would reopen, until now. In his announcement, Goldfeder said, “Using ground penetrating radar and geo-technical testing, [National Grid] will assess how shifting subsoil is causing the potholes and uneven road surfaces that prompted the city to close our vital roadway.” Throughout inspections, it was also discovered that there is a coal tunnel underneath the roadway, which was used to transport coal from the nearby Manufactured Gas Plant site to barges at the bay sometime in the

late 1800s and early 1900s. The coal tunnel is said to be intact, but National Grid will fill in the underground tunnel to prevent and further undermining of the street, according to Goldfeder. As part of his announcement, Goldfeder said there is an optimistic target date for completion. “The repairs will be completed

and the roadway reopened by Memorial Day 2016, and possibly sooner. Additionally National Grid has agreed to build an esplanade that will include new grass and benches. I will continue to work with Councilman Ulrich, National Grid and the DOT to ensure that we once again have access to this vital thoroughfare,” he said.

National Grid spokesperson, Wendy Ladd confirmed their involvement and potential completion date, saying “National Grid is coordinating closely with NYC DOT to repair the area of Beach Channel Drive adjacent to its work area. National Grid will continue to work with DOT through the design and repair process and expects to complete the work before the end of May 2016. “ According to Robby Schwach of Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office, the ground penetrating radar resulted in the discovery of “voids” under the road, along with the coal tunnel. He added that National Grid will conduct boring, or drilling, this week to determine the extent of the undermining of the roadway. “Once they get the results of the boring tests this week, they can come up with an action plan. We hope this will fall into process within two to three weeks,” Schwach said. In addition to the roadway, National Grid is also looking at an al-

A call was received around 12:54 p.m. on Monday, February 15, regarding an apartment fire on the third floor of 8400 Shore Front Parkway. According to the FDNY press office, the first units arrived on scene at 12:57 p.m. The all-hands fire evoked a response of more than 12 units and 60 firefighters and EMS members. The fire was brought under control 28 minutes and 26 seconds after FDNY received the call. One civilian was transported with minor injuries to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. Fire Marshals determined that the fire was caused by religious candles. The apartment where the fire occurred was apartment 3A. According to past FDNY reports, a fire occurred in that exact apartment on July 31, 2014. No injuries were reported during that incident.

Snakes On A Plane

We all know the types. There’s the seemingly clueless who push something along the lines of a forklift down the aisle of the plane. They’re just following the old joke: carry-on is anything you can carry on. Your eyes haven’t even completed a full roll before you’re hit in the head with the bag they’ve got slung over their shoulder. They walk down the aisle just knocking out one person after another. The really obnoxious ones make sure the zipper on the bag is positioned so it rips at your skin and almost draws blood. It only makes matters worse when they say they’re sorry. That pisses me off. They’re not sorry. They know what they’re doing.

I want to ask the flight attendant for an ice pack after getting drilled by the swinging bag but I’m too annoyed at them for letting the passenger board the plane in the first place. I sit and stew in stony silence. And then just as my anger steadies into something manageable, the big oaf behind me has to use the back of my seat as a grip to help his fat ass out of the seat. His clammy paw almost makes my seat fully recline until he releases and then gives my whole seat a good hip bump before making his way to the restroom. On his return he’s gonna use the back of my seat to help lower himself down. And when he lets go I almost catapult into the seat in front of me. You’d think I’d watch a movie, read a book, or just fall asleep but I’d rather get annoyed. So I notice people. It’s a terrible habit. Don’t do it. I notice the high mainte-

nance type asking to change seats, asking for extra bags of peanuts, or for somebody to fetch their crap from the overhead. I wonder how another person could make so many trips to the restroom. I understand airplane johns are so luxurious, but really? When flight attendants give their spiel about lifejackets and emergency exits they should really tell people to learn how to hold it in. Or trips to the john should be like carry-on luggage – one per customer. Gotta go again? That’ll be $35. The armrest battle is something else. A decent human being will not use it if another person has equal rights to it. Tuck your arms in and suffer but don’t be a selfish armrest bully. Of course, if you’ve got the unfortunate luck to be sitting next to someone who has done an armrest land grab, you can play it a couple of ways. You

can wait until they reach for something and grab it as your own. But sometimes that just takes too damn long. The other tried and true method is the steady snail. You position your arm so it engages in a slow takeover. You give the slightest elbow nudge and when the armrest bully gives a millimeter your arm takes that millimeter. You continue this until at least half is yours. But because he started it you can continue until you conquer that invading arm and seize the entire armrest. I’m sure there’s a chapter on this in The Art of War. While I fly and hate I think my greatest disdain is held for those who rush up the aisle after the plane has taxied to the terminal and come to a stop. The worst kind of line cutters and I can’t scream about them now because this column must go through customs. And that’s another story.

Goldfeder:

Review Sewer Infrastructure! Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder is calling on the city’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Economic Development Corporation (EDC) to review aging coastal infrastructure throughout southern Queens and Rockaway, following unexpected flooding last week. He’s also requesting that the city expedite work to install new storm water valves at the rebuilt bay wall in Rockaway. In letters to DEP Commissioner Emily Lloyd and EDC President Maria Torres-Springer, Assemblyman Goldfeder called for a thorough review of the city’s sewer and coastal wall infrastructure in and around southern Queens and Rockaway. Goldfeder cited concerns from residents over the effectiveness of sewer infrastructure in properly handling tidal surges like the unexpected high tides on February 8 and 9. The Assemblyman wrote that the review would help allay fam-

ilies’ concerns with clogged catch basins and sewer lines, a problem Goldfeder has consistently heard from residents in the three years since Superstorm Sandy. Goldfeder’s letter also called on EDC to expedite the installation of storm water “duckbill valves along the city-owned stretch of bay walls between Beach 125th and Beach 130th Streets in Rockaway. According to information obtained by Goldfeder’s office, the installation, originally scheduled by EDC for the first week of December, has yet to be completed and is still being coordinated with DEP. The information obtained also states that tide gate installation at the site, originally slated for early last month, is stalled due to a production delay on the part of the gates’ manufacturer. In both cases, Goldfeder is calling for the agency to quickly complete the work.

Chapey of Belle Harbor died on February 9th. Dr. Chapey served for 15 years on the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York, was Dean of the Graduate and Undergraduate School of Education at St. John’s University, and President of School Board 27. She was also the mother of Geraldine M. Chapey who writes the “Chatting With Chapey” column for local newspapers. ***** If you’re wondering about the medical center planned for the old Key Food at Beach 105 and RBB site, look for demolition and construction to start in 3045 days. Once things get going it should be full steam ahead. ***** Jeffrey Williams-Maisonet, just 20 years old, has launched a blog Primetime Rockaway that he also calls “Rockaway’s Latest Community Newspaper.” He scored a taped interview with State Senator James Sanders about the New York Post article in which Sanders was accused of asking for a kickback from Culinary Kids, a community garden group seeking funding. Jeffrey did a good job asking Sanders tough questions. He

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2016 asked the senator if he had taken a polygraph (Sanders said no and that he would only do it if his accusers did the same). He also asked him if he had been in touch with the US Attorney’s office. Again, Sanders said no. Interestingly, Sanders had said in a press release he was doing both: “Sanders is going to Bharara’s office tomorrow, with an attorney present, where he will offer to take a polygraph (lie detector test) to clear his name, but he wants the money seeking group to also take one.” We asked a Sanders spokesperson whether the senator had visited the US Attorney yet. Somehow we think there will be more about this. ***** Various reports say Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, who represents Brooklyn and parts of Queens, is eyeing a mayoral primary challenge (and is being urged to do so by Governor Cuomo). He’s been a vocal supporter of Hillary Clinton and taken issue with Bernie Sanders raising his profile in the process. Bill de Blasio went to Iowa for Hillary but didn’t get much notice. Anyway, that’s neither here nor there but what’s worth noting is that Jeffries came out strongly in favor of restoring the Rockaway Beach Rail Line. Phil Goldfeder has made this one of his signature issues. So what if Jeffries does challenge de Blasio? Will Phil back the challenger? ***** Parade reminders. Vacate Order Placed on Religious Dorm By Katie McFadden

Occupants of a religious dormitory located at 124-05 Rockaway Beach Boulevard were forced to vacate the property on Monday, February 15 by order of the Department of Buildings after unsafe conditions were found. Local online news source OnRockaway.com broke the news about the vacate order on Monday for the dorm that is used by students of Yeshiva Mercaz HaTorah of Belle Harbor on Beach 129th Street. The order comes after a response by the FDNY on Sunday, February 14 due to a water condition. A video posted to YouTube shows the building being flooded due to burst pipes on a day where temperatures reached single digits. The FDNY requested a DOB inspection of the building after finding several hazardous conditions in the building while responding to the flooding issue. No injuries were reported in the

building, which was fully occupied at the time. The following day, the DOB served a vacate order under category code 30: BUILDING SHAKING/VIBRATING/STRUCTURE STABILITY AFFECTED. Among the comments on the DOB website were: “Sprinkler system throughout building defective, electric panel boxes flooded at all floors, no fire protection at cellar floor joists leaving wood beams exposed. Water and electric shut down by FDNY. No sprinkler takes away 2nd means of egress for Class B rooming house. Vacate order issued for entire building.” A vacate notice was posted to the building saying, “The Department of Buildings has determined that conditions in this premises are imminently perilous to life. This premises has been vacated and reentry is prohibited until such conditions have been eliminated to the satisfaction of the department.”

Witnesses say the FDNY and DOB Emergency Services were on site on Monday, vacating a few hundred students out of the building. The Rockaway Times reached out to Yeshiva Mercaz HaTorah for more details on the incident and where the students were relocated, but was told by a secretary that details were still being gathered and did not receive by press time. The building has a long history of issues and has been known as a

neighborhood eyesore. The DOB website says there are 24 open violations against the building, dating as far back as February 10, 1997. Among them are boiler and elevator issues and failure to file inspection reports for these items. There are also 11 complaints against the building, dating back to August 1995. Among the latest complaints, filed over the past two years were issues regarding blocked fire escapes and boarded up windows.

RIP To Mighty Atom Jr. Legendary strongman, Mike Greenstein, who turned 95 in December died this week while visiting family in Florida. The affable strongman who lived in the Beach 105 building was able to pull cars with his teeth and entertained crowds for decades with feats of strength.

Mike Greenstein aka Mighty Atom Jr.

Mike was still going strong into his nineties. In October, 2014 at the age of 93 Mike thrilled hundreds of people as he pulled a car at the Fall Festival on Beach 116th Street. Just a year earlier, he was introduced to millions as he demonstrated his amazing

strength on the TV show America’s Got Talent. Mike was the son of another strongman, Joe Greenstein who was known as The Mighty Atom on the Vaudeville circuit. Following in his father’s footsteps, Mike became known as Mighty Atom Junior and took to entertaining troops on army bases. He said, “I never ever got any pay for it. Charity comes first.” His demonstrations were often used to raise awareness about breast cancer which claimed the lives of his first wife and daughter. At just 5’ 4’ and 140 pounds, the strongman was not physically imposing and said most of his abilities ---including bending a steel rod across the bridge of his nose -- came from having belief in himself. “Mind over matter,” he’d say. “You can’t look at something and say, ‘Well this might be too tough.’ You say I can do it no matter what.” Mike worked at Trans World Airlines (TWA) for many years and later at Waldbaum’s as a manager and was a wedding

photographer as well. He also took up painting and mosaic design late in life and his apartment was full of his artwork. When interviewed by The Rockaway Times in 2014, the then-93year-old said of Rockaway where he lived since the early 1980s, “I find the ocean with fresh air, there’s nothing better. It beats the smog and the smoke and the polluted air from cars. And of course there are a lot of pretty girls.”

Mike was one of ten children. He is survived by his younger brother, Jerry. Funeral Services will be: Sunday Feb 21, 2016 – 1pm at the IJ Morris 21 E Deer Park Avenue, Dix Hills, NY. Burial immediately following at: Mt. Golda Cemetery, 500 Old Country Rd. Huntington Station, NY RIP Mighty Atom Jr. You left a strong impression.

Boardwalk Surprise!

BEACH 73RD TO BEACH 86TH NOW OPEN Ahead of the Parks Department’s schedule, Phase 4A of the new boardwalk, had a surprise opening this week. The fences came down on Tuesday, February 16 and bikers and pedestrians were able to enjoy an even longer trip on the boardwalk when Beach 73rd to Beach 86th Street opened. As of the soft opening on Tuesday, people can now walk about a mile and a half stretch of boardwalk, from about Beach

73rd to Beach 106th Street. Fencing around the construction area and beach entrances were still in the process of being removed this week, but the path and marked bike lanes were open for use. Queens Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski stopped by for a visit on Wednesday, February 17 to inspect the progress. Construction on Phase 4A began in spring 2015 and had an anticipated opening of Memorial Day 2016, so Tuesday’s opening came as a surprise. It appears that Phase 4B, from Beach 60th to Beach 73rd may follow close behind with an early opening. Phase 3, from Beach 106th to Beach 126th and Phase 5A from Beach 39th to Beach 60th are also scheduled to open as new by Memorial Day of this year. The entire boardwalk from Beach 9th to Beach 126th Street is

still scheduled to be continuous by Memorial Day of this year, with sections of old and new boardwalk linking together and once Phase 5B, up

to Beach 39th Street is reconstructed, the boardwalk will be entirely completed as a new construction by Memorial Day 2017.

BCD EXPECTED

Continued from page 3 ternative method to fix the bulkhead that it had been working on. “The bulkhead isn’t finished yet, but National Grid has gone through the state DEC to ask if they’ll be able to install the rest of the bulkhead in a different manner, instead of using pile driving. They don’t know if the driving affected the road, but it sure didn’t help,” Schwach said. Schwach says the National Grid takeover is a positive move in the right direction. “Part of the property under that road is National Grid property, so they feel somewhat responsible for the work and I think everyone is happy that it’s proceeding in this direction because for the city to repair it, it would have to go through a process that would take much longer. We’re happy National Grid is taking responsibility because it will cut down the time, which is vital since we need this strip open before summer,” he said. Both Councilman Ulrich and Goldfeder’s office are committed to staying on top of National Grid and the city the ensure that the work is

done as soon as possible. For businesses that have taken a hit due to the road closure, the repairs can’t come soon enough. Tom’s Wave Station, closest to the closure site, has been impacted due to closure of the road that would normally lead right to his business. “It’s difficult for customers to get here, but thank God we have steady, loyal customers that go out of their way to still come by,” owner Tom McNicholas said. He was not aware of the National Grid takeover and expected May completion, but was relieved by the update when contacted by the Rockaway Times. “That’s good news,” he said. To avoid some traffic confusion, it was expected that flashing red or yellow lights would be added to the intersections near the closure, but this never came to fruition. Instead, some “After Stop, Right Turn Permitted on Red” signs have been installed at three locations along the detour. Otherwise, drivers must obey the traffic lights as normal. Those who run the red light without permission to turn right on red, may be ticketed by police.

The Lazer Speaks

The Rockaway Times

WHAT’S THE PLAN? By Lou Pastina

Ok, so we’ve had a couple of snow storms and then some tidal flooding here in Rockaway and Broad Channel, did those things stop and make you think â€“ what if something bad happens again, how do we get off the peninsula? Somehow the brilliant folks at the Bridges & Tunnels thought it would be a good idea to close one lane each way on the Marine Parkway Bridge during the winter for repair. Have you tried driving over the bridge in the morning? The traffic is backed up all along Beach Channel Drive, just like it was this past summer. Well, that’s ok you say, I’ll just escape over the Cross Bay Bridge. Well have you tried driving down Beach

Channel Drive past 108th Street? Impossible, it seems that the road is unstable and is closed indefinitely until they figure out what the heck happened to the road and the ground underneath it. Perhaps the guys fixing the bulkhead undermined the footing at the base and made it unstable. Maybe the contaminated site across the street seeped into the ground and loosened the sand making it difficult to keep the road paved straight. I am sure someone knows, maybe we should call Mulder and Scully, they are opening new X-File cases this year, and this would make a good one. How about tidal flooding? All during the fall there were guys clearing out the sewers with hi-tech equipment, flushing out all the

remains from the last century, and vacating all the critters that live in those pipes. And since Sandy the city has been hard at work restoring the bulkhead along Beach Channel Drive. So what happened with the flooding? Every sewer in the middle of the peninsula backed up because the peninsula dips in the middle. It appeared that none of the floodgates worked and allowed the bay to rise back into the sewers and back out on the streets of Rockaway and Broad Channel. On Beach 126th Street, forget it, you couldn’t drive down that block. Also Beach 56th Street – forget that too, no way through. Trying to get to Five Towns by Seagirt Boulevard, there was no way you could pass that lagoon unless you were the creature that lived there. So if you thought escaping Rockaway through Broad Channel or Five Towns was a good plan – think again. So what are our elected officials thinking? They are spending half a billion dollars over several years on a boardwalk that Long Beach put up in one summer for about fifty million dollars; they took away the ferry with promises to bring it back in an election year; they are taking the sand trap bags away because they think we don’t need them; they won’t put in rock-jetties; and there

is no investment in road infrastructure to get us off the peninsula in a true emergency. I am no fan of Robert Moses, but at least he saw the big picture. He was willing to build a superhighway through Rockaway to Long Island. Of course none of us would be living here if he did because he would have knocked down half the homes just like he did in Brooklyn and the Bronx. It finally dawned on me what the plan is, and it has been right before my eyes all along. Have you wondered why the new Harbor Light construction on Beach 130th Street looks so big and tall? It’s got steel beams and rises like a skyscraper, but don’t let that fool you because it’s not really a restaurant, it’s an ark! Yes, an ark, when the need arises we will all get into the new hull of the Harbor Light and float to safety. And if it’s not, who cares, they will have beer and wings. Now that’s a plan!

Blocks Of The Rock: West 11th Road By Dylan Watton

in and swim in the bay, Emily Frohnhoefer said. She recently moved to Bushwick but is a frequent visitor back to her old block. “Now more than ever the tide comes up the street. Going to college and explaining that was normal to our friends was always interesting.

There is no East 11th Road—on that side of Cross Bay Boulevard horizontal houses just line up in a row. West 11th isn’t a particularly deep block either, as it takes three minutes at most to walk from the corner of the boulevard to the dead end construction site at the far side of the street.

On West 11th Road in Broad Channel, it’s often that the tide is high, but they’re holding on. A recent bout of flooding brought rising waters to many a block throughout Queens. Newport Avenue in Rockaway became a wakeboarder’s paradise and Hamilton Beach’s submersed streets could be seen from the A train. For most the flooding was at best an inconvenience and at worst a flashback to Sandy. But the residents of West 11th Road can take it in stride—they’ve been dealing with the effects of even normal high tides for as long as they can remember. After all, it’s the second-lowest block on its island, with only neighboring West 12th sinking further. “I would not suggest anybody do this now but when the tide was high you would jump

In typical Broad Channel fashion, there is minimal space between homes, a callback to the days when the area was almost exclusively a summer bungalow colony. Several houses retain the low-rise bungalow look, but increasingly homes are being built higher and with multiple floors; the house at the very end of the block is all beige concrete with Tetris-style windows and a modern slanted roof. Families on this block often date back several generations, fostering long-term friendships and commitment to the street. Frank and Laurie Porcella have lived there since 1981. With assistance from neighbors such as Charlie Madden, Frank began building (“remodeling in his words) their current house in that year. “It’s still a work in progress, he joked. “My dad was working a full-time job and

could only fix up the house when he had time,” daughter Danielle said. “I was the only one of my siblings born into a fully-built house.” The Porcella’s house was close by to relatives, as well. “If you go out on our back deck and look at the end of the block, right by the boulevard, that’s my aunt and uncle’s house. They actually moved to Florida and my sister bought it from them. Now my mom and dad can hear their grandkids call down ‘Hi Grandma!’” Danielle said. West 11th Road is home to longtime veterans including Bruce Fuller, Sal Napolitano, and Pat Brosnahan, a former postman whom Danielle said recently moved into a vets’ home. All three men served in World War II. Another notable resident of the block is Dan McIntyre, longtime chief of the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department. With notable and entrenched families known all throughout Broad Channel, West 11th Road became a primary congregation spot as Danielle Porcella, Frohnhoefer, and their friends grew up. “I still have the same group of best girlfriends and guy-friends,” Sarah Dougherty said. “We won most popular block for the Labor Day parade one year. We would stay out all night and our parents would hang out on their deck with their coffee cups while we played manhunt. I know everyone by name and by face. I consider the whole block like family.” The aforementioned tide and canals have created a sense of unity on the block. “Everybody takes care of the canals,” Frank Porcella said. “If there’s garbage in the water they take it out and people are always looking out for each other’s boats.” Dougherty fondly recalled seeing Frohnhoefer’s dad row down the block in his kayak on a day when flooding occurred. “Somedays in order to get us to school my mom would have to put on her boots and carry us across the street so that we could get to PS47,” Danielle recalled laughing. The block always seems to have looked out for one another. “The fact that the kids could always go out and play was great, nobody ever needed daycare,” Laurie said. “When you need

The Rockaway Times something just knock on your neighbor’s door. Milk, sugar, boots for when tide comes up, even just an extension cord,” Dougherty said. In one instance of the block’s character lasting well in to the future, John Sugden and Lisa Carroll have bought the property next to Sugden’s parents’ house and have been in the process of remodeling it (the house was gutted during the storm). A throwback to the not-so-distant past finds Charlie Madden’s son, Brian frequently helping to build. “I want to be creating a family of my own someday and hoping they can have as much fun as we did when we were kids,” Carroll said. She spent most of her life in Rockaway but was a near-constant presence on the block regardless. “We’re keeping the tradition of 11th Road alive.” The pair are putting the finishing touches on their home and are looking to move in sometime in March. West 11th Road has mostly remained static over the years, with some faces and housing changing in between. “The biggest thing is the construction,” Danielle said. “They are trying to raise the streets to be level with Cross Bay Boulevard. It’s still a work-in-progress.” “It’s quieter now. Even back then you would hear your parents scream your name from down the block and now they just text. I feel like that’s just our day and age,” Dougherty said. Despite moving away, Frohnhoefer still feels a strong pull towards her old haunts. “One thing I missed most is that all of my friends are here. You could walk to the store and stop for an hour talking to people when you meant to just get milk. One time I was walking with a college friend to the store and I just stopped to say hello to everybody. She was just like, ‘Do you know everybody here?’ I said ‘Yeah, it’s pretty much like that.’”

A VALENTINE FAUX PAS

This past Sunday was Valentine’s Day, a faux holiday celebration I have always believed was created by an insidious conspiracy on the part of our nation’s candy, floral and greeting card industries. This year, rather than spend my kid’s inheritance like a drunken sailor on candy, flowers, cards, etc., I decided I would attempt to make Valentine’s Day more of an educational experience for the entire family. On Valentine’s Day morning, as the family gathered in the kitchen of our abode on West 12th Road, I was greeted with the same inquisitive glances I am greeted with each Valentine’s Day as Grace and the girls look about to see what tokens of my undying love I had procured for each of them. As it slowly became obvious that there were no expensive tokens of my love sitting on the table I announced that we should all retire to the sitting room

whereupon I announced that in honor of Valentine’s Day 2016 I would play a PBS video entitled “The Science of Kissing” and told everyone that when you really think about it, kissing is an odd human behavior so there must be a good reason why we do it. A little education in the biological sciences most certainly outweighs the temporary hedonistic pleasures of cards, candy or flowers, right? As I started the video, the room fell silent as each of the women wondered what the hell I was up to. At the outset of the video there is a scene from the 1953 motion picture From Here to Eternity where Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr are lying in the surf on a Hawaiian beach kissing. Without thinking, I blurted out that I recognized both the 63-year-old film and the actors, at which time Grace started laughing uncontrollably saying, “Christ, you are an old geezer!” I immediately started to feel depressed! Later, the narrator stated that eight out of 10 women color their lips some shade of red because it is believed that men are attracted to “fuller, redder, lips.” The narrator went to explain that as we evolved to walk upright we began to advertise our fertility “face to face.” Unfortunately, the narrator goes on to say that our primate relatives, who still saunter about on all fours, are also attracted to rosy colors, just in a different place at which point the video displays a baboon’s red butt. At that point Grace again

interjected, “I guess you’ll have to think twice before you tell someone to kiss your ass again!” In addition to being depressed, I began to get the distinct feeling that my Valentine’s Day experiment was not going as planned. Later in the video we learned that it is the orbicularis oris muscle in our face that allows us to “pucker” our lips just like a nursing baby. The video goes on to say that most of us turn our heads to the right when we kiss because 80 percent of our mothers held us to their left while breastfeeding. At that point my daughter Victoria paused the video, looked at me and said, “Is this guy serious or did he have a Freudian slip, saying one thing and thinking of a mother?” Due diligence requires that I also inform you that at this point both our cat and dog got up and disappeared from the room after giving me looks which clearly indicated “You’re on your own!”

As the video came to an end, the narrator informed us that although kissing is weird, “Let’s face it, you’re rubbing your open mouth on another human being’s open mouth,” there exists a myriad of words used to describe it... locking lips, making out, playing tonsil hockey, tongue tickle, snogging, pecking, and osculation. Pointing at me, Grace sighed and looked at Vicki, telling her, “Back when you were just a baby, your father lovingly referred to our kissing as swapping spit!” When the video ended, the room once again fell silent as Grace and Victoria glared at me with their well-practiced “stink eye” stare and arose to exit the room in a huff. Needless to say, the rest of the day went downhill from there. Perhaps candy, cards and flowers are not such a bad idea after all? Broad Channel – why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

OBEY THE LAW

SHUTTLE GOOD FOR NUMBERS

DearEditor: On Tuesday February 9th Community Board 14 held their monthly meeting where the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) spoke about the free shuttle bus service which will be available for the Rockaway Ferry service in 2017. I would like to remind everyone that it was the E.D.C. under the leadership of Kyle Kimball who said to this community the “numbers” were not sufficient and the reason why the Rockaway Ferry was taken out of service. Now they are talking about the shuttle bus service and leaving out the east end of this peninsula which is not fair and where a very large percentage of people live. I think the E.D.C. better rethink this so we do not have to hear in the future that the “number” of riders using the Rockaway Ferry service are not sufficient. Though there will be a contract involved we do not want to hear “eventually” that our ferry service will be terminated. I hope under the EDC’s new leadership and the City that this situation will be better looked into and rectified. Danny Ruscillo

Dear Editor: This is in response to Rick Horan’s letter last week. It is dangerous and against the law to go through a red light. Last week when I was driving my daughter to dance, I could not make a legal turn at Beach Channel Drive and the Freeway because many drivers were rapidly going through the red light at that location. One problem in our city is too many people are in a hurry instead of driving safely and legally. If you are in that much of a hurry, take a different rout! Slow down and save lives. John Lydon

CRIME AND SHAME

Dear Editor: Another Queens Councilman, Ruben Wills of SE Queens – Jamaica, has his dirty/filthy hands in the people’s pockets. Charged by the state attorney general with grand larceny and filing false business records. He is also accused of stealing public tax dollars from a nonprofit group he founded. Southeast Queens, unfortunately, has serious problems and they’re being led and repped by a common thief?! And oh yeah, our 51 NYC Councilmembers are doing such a great job that Mayor de Blasio is giving them a raise. You see, if they make ( earn?) ten thousand DRAINS, NOT DUMPS dollars more they will stop stealing Dear Editor: hundreds of thousands! Future of the Assembly Looks Bright Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder may have to watch his seat. He has a potential challenger, but she may not qualify until 2026. St. Camillus Catholic Academy student Madyson Middleton is giving Goldfeder a run for his money. But lucky for him, she’s still in the fourth grade. Middleton, along with her family, were invited as special guests last week for his “Assembly Member for a Day” program. The visit provided the eight-year-old with the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a New York State Legislator, getting an up-close look at the legislative process and the state’s ongoing budget negotiations. “I always strive to make government more accountable and accessible to our families in southern Queens and Rockaway,” Goldfeder said. “What better way to do this than to give future leaders like Madyson the chance to see firsthand what it means to represent 130,000 people in the state legislature.

It was an honor and a privilege to bring Madyson and her family into the people’s house and show them the work I do on behalf of the community.” This opportunity began last month when Middleton’s parents came to Goldfeder’s office to apply for grants to pay for Madyson’s upcoming trip to Washington, D.C. as part of the National Youth Leadership Fellowship: Pathways to STEM program. Middleton, who was nominated for the program by Madyson looks ready to take charge. her teacher, is a regular participant in the Assemblyman’s Summer Reading Challenge. Seeing Madyson’s passion for learning, Goldfeder offered her the chance to join him in Albany and learn about state government. Middleton, along with her mother, Shasa and father, Philip, took a train up to Albany and spent two days following Goldfeder around through a packed schedule of legislative session, committee meetings, and visits to sites around the state capital. Mindfulness A Multitude Of Benefits

By Bridget Scala

The idea of Mindfulness is not a new one, but is rapidly becoming recognized for both its physical and mental benefits. Mindfulness can be applied to any activity, like walking, washing dishes or dealing with any situation life may present us with. In simple terms, it is paying attention with concentrated focus to the present moment. Practicing Mindfulness usually begins with bringing your mind’s awareness to your breath. Allowing your mind to focus simply on the breath begins to slow and deepen the breath. It has been shown to slow down your heart rate, lower blood pressure, and even boost the immune sys-

tem. Even the medical establishment is quickly recognizing that mindful meditation and mindful exercise has many health benefits that they can empirically study. Longtime practitioners of mindful meditation or mindful based physical practices like yoga or Pilates have long known that these practices have a multitude of physical and mental benefits, but now the science is proving this to even the biggest of skeptics. Science has proven the many physical benefits, which are easily studied empirically, but it has also studied the mental benefits, which may be harder to quantify. Studies show that people experience an increase in a sense of happiness and feeling of

well-being and a sense of peace and ease, with as little as ten minutes a day of practice. If the idea of simply sitting in meditation does not appeal to you, you can start by adding mindful exercise to your life. Yoga class usually begins with focusing on the breath along with mindful movement, and ends with a few minutes of mindful relaxation. Pilates is also a mindful movement exercise that focuses your mind’s awareness not only on your breath, but also on careful and mindful execution of the exercises. Mindful exercise is a different approach to fitness than just regular exercise, as its goal is more holistic, trying to strengthen the body, but with an emphasis

on improving breath, enhancing focused awareness and increasing a sense of well-being. The focus is not on outside results, such as weight loss or looking a certain way, but those benefits do happen as well! Of course mindfulness can be applied to any exercise, as it’s the practitioner’s approach and focus that determines the state in which any activity is done. So whatever activity you are engaged in, simply pay attention, and you will be practicing mindfulness. You can join us for Mindful Meditation, Yoga or Pilates at All Seasons Retreat, 181 Beach 116th St, 2nd Floor. (Bridget Scala is one of the owners of All Seasons Retreat.)

A Real Estate Update from Rockaway Properties

Unlike the stock market, that can rise to meteoric bull market highs or fall to life-altering lows virtually overnight, the real estate market offers shelter to homeowners and investors in more ways than one. Traditional real estate remains the most tried and true investment for everyone, a sort of ‘forced’ savings account with numerous ways to grow the investment. Owners can gain equity by paying down their mortgage; with renovations and alterations to the property and appreciation as home values rise, particularly if they can buy low and sell high. For the savvy investor, venturing into buying marginal properties can result in a big payday after the home is ‘fixed and flipped’ or alternately, held and rented out for an income flow. So how does this affect our home values in Rockaway you may ask? While we have not yet reached the peak prices of 2006, low interest rates and a tight supply of properties for sale are the main reasons for the increase in home prices both nationally and locally. In 2015, our team of agents at Rockaway Properties worked with sellers, buyers and investors in all price ranges. In every instance, we found that having inside knowledge of market value is crucial to the process. With the popularity of TV shows such as HGTV and the proliferation of online real estate sites, today’s buyers are more educated than ever. But nothing can match the first hand knowledge of a good agent who is familiar with the inventory of properties in a particular area. Buyers want a quick response to inquiries, real time information and often an agent who can show a property on very short notice. At Rockaway Properties our team of 10 experienced agents can accomplish this as we work together with a common goal of giving the best service possible. Our team approach is unique to the area and a large part of the success we continue to have. There is always an agent available to answer questions or show a property, 7 days a week and an office with a full time administrative assistant who can streamline the process. When a homeowner is thinking about selling their home, it is imperative to give the most accurate, honest opinion of value. We do this by utilizing the most recent comparable sales on hand and conducting an in depth examination of each property that has sold, taking into account location, condition and amenities. Armed with our knowledge of what makes each home in Rockaway unique, we get sellers the highest prices possible and defend that price when appraisal time comes into play. Our agents closed an unbelievable 93 properties in 2015 and have already closed 10 homes in 2016 and have another 27 homes in contract. These results from one agency have never been seen in Rockaway and clearly, our team approach works wonders for sellers and buyers alike! Our Rockaway Property agents Lisa, Barbara, Nia, Melissa, Colleen, Arianna, Gail, Joe, Alla and Jenny all live and own homes in the neighborhoods of Rockaway, so naturally, we have a vested interest in seeing our collective property values rise and our neighborhoods remain healthy, vibrant and of course, Rockaway strong!

When I started in the business there were only a handful of choices in paint finishes. Paint has come a long way in the past 30 years. So when you’re picking paint, think about textures, patterns and durability as well as color. The paint you choose can make the difference between freshening up a room with a new coat of paint to transforming a room into something new and vibrant. I will only cover a few different types of paint in this article, be sure to ask your handyman/ contractor for more options. Linen look: Though this look can be created using standard paint and a slightly wet brush, faux paint will make the effect much better. There are many

finishes of faux paint, linen look is just one of them. If you follow the instructions that come with the paint and have a steady hand, your walls will come to life with every brush stroke. Marble or Stone look: Though these looks can be created with standard paints, for best results you should use an eggshell finish for the base coat and a translucent color glaze paint for the top coat. The glaze paint will also increase the life of your paint finish by as much as three times. Simply paint the entire wall with your base color, then apply the glaze paint as per instructions. For this look I find putting a dab of paint on, then spreading it by wiping it with a lint-free cloth until it is feath-

no signs of brush marks. Sponge painting: This may be one of the oldest kinds of decorative painting, but the new paints available give it a whole new life. As with other forms of decorative painting you will need to first paint the wall with your base coat. Now there are different types of sponges for painting, the most common are assorted shapes and what’s called a sea sponge. Using your topcoat color in a paint tray lightly dip your sponge into your paint, gently apply the paint to the wall. Patterns can vary, some people like a look with the base coat being the dominant color, while others like the base color appear to be bleeding through the pattern. With all designs, looks and finishes, I recommend trying it on a piece of sheetrock or wood first to get the feel and pattern down before trying it on your walls.

Be Well Be Happy Reiki Energy By Denise Lee

Reiki is a healing technique and a spiritual practice that was developed in Japan by a Buddhist monk early in the last century. Reiki is a dynamic tool for tapping into a larger system of universal energy that already flows inside and outside our bodies. It is proven to reduce stress, increase focus and can help enhance creativity. Reiki is very safe and noninvasive. The client is fully dressed while lying down or seated in a chair. The Reiki practitioner places her/his hands on or just above the body. People have described the sensation of heat and healing pulsations, which helped them feel relaxed and in a meditative state. Some people fall asleep but awaken feeling calm and renewed. Reiki is being used in hospitals throughout the world including Memorial Sloane Kettering, Columbia Presbyterian and Beth Is-

rael Medical Center. In this setting, Reiki is presented to patients as a technique that reduces stress and promotes relaxation and enhances the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Some patients suffering from cancer, heart disease, auto-immune disease and other illnesses have reported great benefits. My sister-in-law, who has cancer, has truly benefited from the Reiki experience. I had many sessions with her while she was undergoing chemotherapy. She described her experience as being very relaxing, drawing her into a deeper connection to spirit. This helped strengthen her faith leading her to greater trust, acceptance and a true sense of healing. Studies show that so much of healing is letting go of fear, having a positive outlook and trusting in a higher power or intelligence. Reiki has an intelligence of its own flowing where it is needed, dissolving energy blocks, creating

Denise Lee the healing conditions necessary for the individual’s needs. Touch is an automatic natural instinct to comfort and heal. We lay our hands on places of pain all the time. I know when I am with my 8-month old grandson how much he loves to be touched. While lying on his belly if he has a tummy ache, rubbing his back will soothe him. When I practice Reiki on my senior chair yoga students, I can see the release of tension in their bodies. Touch allows us to communicate with the inner world. It begins with an inward journey, a touch guiding us to observe what is happening within. Any-

Page 31 one can learn this at any age to empower and heal oneself. Reiki seems to find you when you are in most need or ready for the next step on your path. It meets you where you are. Perhaps your soul calls out for a better way. Or your higher power knows you need a change. Reiki works to bring the best result or outcome for all. It teaches you how to let go and let higher consciousness prevail. The simple act of a loving and compassionate touch is God’s love in action. Reiki has transformed me in many ways. It has had a profound effect in my life and the world around me. May you experience the joy of Reiki. Denise Lee is a Level 3 Reiki practitioner and a Certified 500hr Yoga instructor. Women of the Peninsula: Carolyn Redmond and Janet Redmond Hogan of Breezy Point Houses By Katie McFadden

Who runs the peninsula? Women. A large number of local businesses and organizations are owned and operated by females, or female co-owners. And they deserve recognition. As part of an ongoing series, the Rockaway Times is profiling local female entrepreneurs each week. This week is Carolyn Redmond and Janet Redmond Hogan of Breezy Point Houses. The real estate industry may be a bit different when it comes to Breezy Point, but the women of Breezy Point Houses have it down pat. After all, they’ve been in business for more than 30 years, and as Breezy Point residents themselves, mother-daughter team, Carolyn and Janet, know their neighborhood well. Most of the listings for Breezy Point Houses are for homes in Breezy Point and Rockaway Point, but they have also expanded to homes and condos in Rockaway and Park Slope. Carolyn and Janet work with a team of six other agents including Patricia (Teasha) Young, Elizabeth Carlson, Brian (Monte) Murphy, Eileen Young, Patricia McGoorty and Francis Jamin. Carolyn Redmond first became a broker in 1982. Her daughter, Janet Redmond Hogan, followed in her footsteps and became licensed right out of high school in 1992. “We became partners in the last 10 years. I started working for my mom as an agent and then I got my broker license and now we have a team of six other people,” Janet said. Both women entered the real estate business for similar reasons. “I wanted to be a stay at home mom,” Carolyn, who has three daughters, said. “It was really just about working from home. I always had it in my head that I wanted to work from home and real estate allows you to do that,” Janet said. Prior to working for Breezy Point

Janet and Carolyn Houses, Janet had studied marketing and went on to work for major company Landor Associates for about 10 years, but she wanted to trade in the long city commute for a work-fromhome opportunity. Real estate has always been Carolyn’s main career, but she also spent some time as a nurse at Peninsula Hospital. In addition to working as brokers currently, both Janet and Carolyn are licensed appraisers, giving them an even deeper understanding of the real estate business, but they don’t mix their appraisals and own real estate business together. Rather, they appraise properties for other companies. Both women find the social aspect of real estate to be enjoyable. “I like going into people’s houses and getting ideas and I love talking. You have to talk to people in

this field,” Janet said. “I love meeting new people. We get to work with our neighbors in Breezy Point but we’re always meeting new people. One of the most rewarding things is seeing someone buy their first home and how excited they are about that accomplishment,” Carolyn added. Both ladies also enjoy being able to work with each other. “My daughters grew up around real estate, but I never pressured them to get into it. Janet decided to take the license test and I love being able to work with one of my daughters,” Carolyn said. “It’s interesting working with her, but when most people catch up with their mother, they talk about their lives and kids, but when we get together for family gatherings, everyone tells us to shut up about real estate,” Janet said. “But it’s good. When she goes to Florida or on vacation, I fill in for her, even though what she does is very different, and when I go away, I don’t need to ask my boss for permission.” Both women are partners, but they each have different responsibilities. “My mom handles all the paperwork, especially with the Co-op, which requires a lot of applications,” Janet said. The process for purchasing a home in Breezy Point is different than other areas as potential buyers need three letters of reference, connections to people that live within the co-op and they must put down 50 percent down to purchase. Janet, along with the other agents, mainly handle showing and selling the properties. “Once the salespeople have someone buying the house, they hand me all the information and I do the paperwork. I’m behind the scenes, but I’ll occasionally show houses also,” Carolyn said. “It’s hard when my mom goes away and I need to take on her work because it’s so different from mine. She knows everything off the top of her head,” Janet said of her mother.

While both ladies entered real estate to work from home and be there for their families, a home-based business can be rewarding and challenging. “When I work from home, I can throw in the laundry or cook dinner or be here when my kids get off the bus, which is great, but it can be difficult at times. Being able to work on my phone is great, but it’s challenging when you want to make time for your family and you’re always on your phone texting clients, making up ads or updating our social media pages. Also sometimes I have to work at night or do something on the weekend and I have to miss things like soccer games. For the most part, I can schedule my time around my kids, but sometimes it unavoidable,” Janet said. However Janet has found ways to involve her family in her job as well. The real estate business is something that could continue down the family line. Janet says one of her daughters has grown to love it. “My daughter, Mallory, loves to show houses with me. If I know I’m going to a house that has kids or the client has kids, I bring her along. She thinks it’s great,” she said. The ladies say they hope to expand their business as time goes on. “I really want to keep growing, but locally. We just sold an apartment in Park Slope but we’re hoping to get even more into Rockaway and Broad Channel,” Janet said. To those looking to start their own business, especially a home-based one, Carolyn says, “if it’s what your passion is, just go with it.” Janet added, “If you’re going to do it, do it 100 percent, because it takes a lot of commitment, but be sure to make time for yourself because you can get too wrapped into it.” For more information and listings, check out www.breezypointhouses.com or contact Janet at 917-559-8646 or janet@ breezypointhouses.com

THE ROCK AND WRESTLING CONNECTION: LOCAL LOOKS TO MAKE IT BIG IN SQUARED CIRCLE By Dylan Watton

Jesse Ventura said that professional wrestling is “ballet with violence.” Ventura would know—nicknamed “The Body,” the former Navy SEAL wrestled and won championships around the world throughout the 1970s and ‘80s and became an acclaimed antagonistic announcer for the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) after his in-ring career ended. His characterization of the “sport” is accurate—professional wrestling is a highly-choreographed performance art that requires the occasional steel chair or two to beat an opponent. And yes, these days all wrestling fans know that the outcome is predetermined, so you don’t have to tell them. One such fan is Erick Aviles, who for nearly two decades has competed in rings across the country under his alter ego #EricJayden, “The Definition of Authority and Sexiness.” A longtime Rockaway Beach resident, he is currently the Bronx Wrestling Federation Heavyweight Champion. “I started out as Eric Draven because that’s The Crow” he explained. The Crow was a 1994 martial arts movie starring Brandon Lee (who died on set in a gun accident) that has had influence on the pro wrestling world, as the legendary grappler Sting based his later work on the film. “I was like the corporate gangster, but a lot of people told me to change the name,” Aviles said. “Now my whole persona is a corporate-playboy-model gimmick. Jayden is a pretty name and I have this sexy a*****e gimmick, so I thought it worked.” Cocky Don Juan-types have been a wrestling staple for decades, with all-time great performers such as Ric Flair and Shawn Michaels playing the part at various points. Aviles, 42, began watching wrestling just as Vince McMahon, Jr. started to change the

business from a regional model to one revolving around national cable television. Aviles was exposed to the largerthan-life icons that populated WWF airways in the mid-80s. “I’ve been a wrestling fan over 35 years,” he said. “The first time I saw it on TV was the first time I got hooked. I wanted to do that, entertain the fans.” Aviles cited Bret “The Hitman” Hart, Hulk Hogan, The Iron Sheik, and Sgt. Slaughter as major childhood influences. He eventually began training to become a wrestler, enrolling at the since-closed Doghouse Wrestling Academy. His first trainer was Laython Wilkerson and he also received coaching from Nelson Rodriguez Erazo, aka Homicide, who has achieved great success in the Total Nonstop Action (TNA) promotion. “When I started training there, I was six feet and a buck-fifty,” Aviles recalled. “They just beat the crap out of you there. It was a strong-style training, a lot of exercising and calisthenics. It was very brutal, a lot of bumping in the ring. They taught us how to take moves and important ring psychology. In the midst of my training the Doghouse ended up closing, unfortunately.” Aviles had his first match in 1999. “It was a battle royal at the Doghouse training academy in Brooklyn,” he said. “I

was very nervous. There wasn’t a lot of stuff I needed to do, just do my stuff and get thrown over the rope.” Among the challenges Aviles faces when performing live is keeping the suspension of disbelief, or kayfabe in pugilistic parlance, so that audiences don’t see through the charade. “I have to make you think that I’m fighting this other guy and beating him up legit. Anything I do the fans have to believe.” Since nobody likes the good looking guy who knows it, #EricJayden is a heel (bad guy, opposite of a babyface). “I piss off the fans as best I can, and when I start to work my opponent I make it look good so that they boo me,” Aviles said. Wrestling has taken some version of Aviles all around the country to compete. He said he has wrestled all over the city, Long Island, New Jersey, Massachusetts, California, Georgia, and more. Among the notables he has faced are Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Tito Santana, and the Nasty Boys. His current finishing moves are the Go to Sleep (a move in which the wrestler drops a falling opponent onto their rising knee, popularized by the since-retired CM Punk) and a piledriver variation he terms the Sexy Destroyer. Fitting for the character, Jayden’s entrance music is the theme song from the movie Midnight Express, composed by disco legend Giorgio Moroder. Aviles often competes against wrestlers who are significantly younger than him. “I’m in the ring with guys who are literally half my age. It’s hard. Going to the gym every single day, eating right, training at schools throughout NYC. But I want to see how far to make it in this business.” Due to his age, signing with WWE, which has a virtual monopoly on major American wrestling, is unlikely but Aviles stated that his realistic goal is to wrestle for TNA or potentially New Japan Pro Wrestling, a major promotion based in Tokyo.

While the outcomes are predetermined, wrestlers often face very real injuries and due to the complex independent contractor system are rarely afforded health insurance. “I have actually had one big surgery that required me to be out for four-to-six months and I came back after a month because I didn’t want to miss too much time out,” Aviles said. “It’s hard because until this day I suffer when my neck stiffens up and I have a hard time moving it. But the passion to wrestle pushes me to continue forward and fight through the pain.”

Aviles/Jayden has a number of upcoming bookings in Queens and Brooklyn, including one coming up on February 27. He will be defending his heavyweight championship on March 5 in the Bronx. He says he has never been undeterred in pursuing his dream by naysayers and doubters. “It’s funny this way, my mom knows I wrestle but she couldn’t care less. My brother has always been a big supporter since day one. He goes to almost every one of my shows and he’s my personal paparazzi. My wife has been phenomenal. She doesn’t come to my shows but she watches them afterwards. Everybody else knows I do it, but they’re like ‘Ok, whatever.’ When I make it big everybody will be around.”

Diary of a Fat Man Classic Excuses

By Bruce Bernfeld

“You can always blame your cardiologist for gaining weight and going off your diet. It’s my doctor’s fault!” And in rare cases you will be correct!! Many of us have used a multitude of reasons (excuses) for not staying on a diet and gaining weight, but blaming it on your doctor is really a reach. But in my case, it was true!! But...more on that later. First here are a few common excuses that many of us ACTUALLY believe: I’m too busy

best friend and you missed the train home... but that bar of chocolate would surely make it all feel better? Sadly not. While you may think that giving into the temptation of a tasty treat will compensate for a bad day, it will most likely only make you feel guilty and bloated, as well as stressed out. I deserve a treat

The opposite of an emotional eater who reaches for food in times of trouble, a celebratory eater will excuse their junkfood-bingeing blips with the reasoning that they deserve the treat as a reward for their workout session/performance in work/successful weight loss that week. However, the truth is that yes, you do deserve a treat; what you do not deserve is to punish your poor body by plying it with junk and empty calories.

Most of us lead busy lifestyles, juggling work and family commitments alongside hectic social lives. However, this is no excuse for ditching the diet. Remember, fruit and nuts are just as easy to eat on the go as a bag of potato chips and a healthy salad can be It’s genetics whipped up in the same time it takes to peruse a takeout menu Blaming our body shape on and place your order. genetics is a good way to dismiss all responsibility towards it. Trottenberg V. Rosen (Part 2) By Allan Rosen

Continued, Part 1 was published in the 2-11-16 edition. SBS was initially introduced as a plan to speed bus service by making it more attractive, thereby inducing riders to switch from their private car to the bus. Yet DOT has not predicted how many will do that. That data should be available from the MTA’s traffic forecasting model, which is being kept secret. Those who currently drive have little choice because of the number of transfers and fares a mass transit trip would require.

SBS does not address that. DOT has now turned SBS into a Vision Zero component to make the street safer. They are proposing to redesign the entire corridor and have exaggerated dangers to pedestrians, claiming that SBS could have prevented past fatalities, again without any proof. How can boarding buses from the median, which would create thousands of extra pedestrian crossings daily, make the street safer? New islands that would narrow lanes and stall traffic are proposed. For example, the intersec-

I’ve got a slow metabolism

Many people believe they are unable to lose weight due to a sluggish metabolism. However, if you truly have a slow metabolism, the last thing your body needs is to be piled with excessive amounts of calories to burn off. And…. The Biggie: I’ll start my diet tomorrow

The most popular excuse for every neglected resolution known to man!! However, if every time you slip up you put your plans back another day, you are never going to get started. It’s my doctor’s fault

Huh?? Hey it can be the truth! If you remember a few weeks ago I had a cardiac scare that thank God turned out to be a very bad case of pericarditis, a viral infection that caused a development of fluid in the sac around my heart. I say “thank God” because it could have been much worse and my heart tested out real strong. It does take a few months to recover from this and the treatment includes massive tion of Metropolitan Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard would be made “safer for pedestrians.” However, no data has been presented to show the intersection is “dangerous” and the numbers of pedestrian crossings are too low to justify the expense involved. DOT continues to promise to share their traffic analyses, but the data they have provided thus far has been woefully inadequate. They have responded to less than half of the questions posed to them over a year ago and have still refused to define the term “reasonable speed,” which they claim vehicles will be able to travel at after exclusive bus lanes are instituted 24/7, even at times when virtually no buses are operating at all. How does that make any sense? DOT is ramming SBS down the throats of residents by conspiring with the Riders Alliance and Transportation Alternatives to stack the meetings with support-

doses of ibuprofen and the drug colchicine. I started feeling better after beginning the regimen, but every day when I weighed myself... I was gaining weight. My eating habits and healthy lifestyle had not changed and as the days went on I kept gaining a pound or two a day. Talk about discouraging! I was going nuts. It reached about 12 pounds.. so it was time to pull out the big guns... GOOGLE!! And lo and behold, Colchicine CAUSES WEIGHT GAIN in many men over 60 years old!!! AHA, IT’S MY CARDIOLOGIST’S FAULT!! It was very distressing and discouraging but I certainly had to stick to the treatment plan outlined by my doc. But... bad thoughts about abandoning my healthy lifestyle started creeping into my brain! Fear not. I stayed the course and after a few days the weight gain stopped and I started to lose what I had gained. I still have about six pounds to go to get back on track, but I will do it!! But... It sure was fun blaming it on my doctor!! ers to counteract the widespread opposition to their plan. The fact that the alternatives I mentioned did not enter into DOT’s analysis, questions if Trottenberg even knows the difference between a roadway and a corridor. No one would refer to I-95 as “the northeast corridor.” That term also includes Washington DC to Boston Amtrak service as well. Similarly, the Woodhaven “Corridor” includes the inactive Rockaway Beach line, now referred to as QueensRail. Yet DOT refers to the Woodhaven /Cross Bay Boulevard as a “corridor.” According to Assemblyman Goldfeder, State money is available to study the rail line. So why won’t the MTA apply for the funds? It is because they would get federal money to purchase new buses under DOT’s BRT plan. That is not good enough reason to expend $231 million.

Rockaway Swimmer Brings Sunshine to Buffalo

Christian (left) with teammate, Allan Shaw.

Rockaway resident Christian Foti, 19, Riis Park Lifeguard and Division I swimmer for Iona College, set four all-time Iona records this past weekend at the MAAC Conference Swimming and Diving Championships in Buffalo, NY. Foti set individual records in the 500, 1000, and 1650 freestyle events anchored the 880-freestyle relay over the four-day tournament. Perennial MAAC powerhouses Ryder and Marist came in one and two respectfully, with Iona repeating their 5th place finish from last year. Christian partially accredited his success in the pool this year with the rigorous training he undertakes each summer in the ocean. He was one on three Riis guards, (the others being Tom O’Neil and Pat Kilgal-

len) who competed in the USLA National Lifeguard Tournament in Florida this past July. His placement in that tournament has Foti currently ranked in the top 10 lifeguards in the nation for the distance swim and a probable to represent the United States in the International Lifeguard Tournament next year in The Netherlands. This January, Christian also made the MAAC All-Academic Team with a 3.8 GPA. His parents, Duke and Suellen Foti, both former lifeguards themselves, could not be prouder.

INDOOR TRACK REPORT The beautiful autumn afternoons of Van Cortlandt Park are now a distant memory but the ground hogs tell us spring will soon be here. For the past three months, the track battles of winter have been fought indoors at Fordham, St. Anthony’s, the storied Armory, and now at the newest jewel among New York’s sports facilities, the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Center in Staten Island. Ocean Breeze hosted the CHSAA Intersectional Indoor Track Championships this past weekend, bringing together the outstanding runners from the New York Archdiocese with the Dioceses of Brooklyn, Rockville Centre, and Buffalo. The day began with the Girls 3000m race and Therese Gallagher of Bishop Kearney followed her Diocesan Championship with a 4th place at the Intersectional in 11:00. Jackie Thompson of Notre Dame Academy was right behind in 11:05. In the 1500m, Jacqueline Gallagher was also coming off a Diocesan

Championship and bested her sister with a 2nd place finish in 4:55, good for a berth in the NY State Federation Championships in 2 weeks. Kaleigh Gilroy of Archbishop Molloy also turned in a solid 5:43 in the 1500. Kearney’s 3rd Diocesan Champ, cousin Colleen Gallagher also had a strong race, improving on her 1000m time with a 3:10 for 6th place. On the boys’ side, Christian Lanzetta of Archbishop Molloy ran a strong leg for Molloy’s 3rd place finish, 3:31 in the 4 x 400 relay. Alex Goldberg likewise turned in an impressive race as Molloy also placed 3rd in the 4 x 800 in 8:05. This followed his Diocesan Championship in the 1600m two weeks before. He and his teammates will take another shot at their rivals at next week’s 109th Millrose Games, the oldest and most prestigious indoor meet in the country. The highlight of the famous meet at The Armory is the Wanamaker Mile which will feature US Olympi-

an and former Rockapulco Run champion Matt Centrowitz. In the Women’s Wanamaker Mile, Kerri Gallagher will hopefully win a 2nd championship for Beach 134th St that day, as she continues her quest for the 2016 Olympics, after her semifinal showing at last year’s World Championships for Team USA. Tune in to NBC Sports Network this Sunday from 4-6 PM. The Freshmen and Sophomore Intersectionals were the previous weekend and Rockaway runners also fared well there. Aiden Donohue of Xavier placed 5th in the sophomore 1600m in 4:50 and first with the Xavier 4 x 800 sophomore champs in 8:44. For the freshmen, Aidan Smith of Xavier placed 19th in the 600 in 1:50 with teammate Conor Bradwisch also turning in a solid race. Bryan Bostwick took his turn at 300m. John Conroy of Xaverian took 9th in the 1000 in 3:21 with Jack McDade of Archbishop Molloy right behind in

3:22, and Brendan Glynn of Xaverian in 3:25. Ryan Fitzgerald of Xavier placed 10th in the 1600, Ryan Meade of Regis 11th, Dylan Abernethy of Xavier 14th, and Kennedy Kirk of Molloy 19th. All then went on to better their times in the Novice 1600 race at the Varsity Intersectionals. Matt McDade hit 5:39 at the Diocesan Championships, while sister Paige McDade concentrated on relay duties for Molloy at the Intersectionals. James Lunny of Xavier ran 2:18 for 800 and 5:06 for 1600 in the Diocesan championships for the Archdiocese. Ryan and Kevin McMahon fared well for Xavier in the Shot Put. The spotlight is now on the Millrose Games this weekend, then the State Federation Championships on March 5th, and the Indoor National Championships on March 12. By then, we will know if the ground hogs were right, and if it is time to reconvene at Icahn Stadium for the outdoor season.
