Remember Firefighter Jesse Gerhard of Ladder 134 Rockaway has lost one of its Bravest. On Wednesday, February 16, Firefighter Jesse Gerhard of Far Rockaway’s Ladder 134, died after battling a blaze the day before. He was laid to rest on Wednesday, February 23. Gerhard, a 33-year-old, seven-year veteran of the FDNY suffered a medical episode in the firehouse the day after battling a 2-alarm fire at a three-story home at 2543 Beach Channel Drive on Tuesday. He was rushed to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital where he later died. Gerhard, a resident of Long Beach and a volunteer with the Islip Fire Department, is survived by his parents, his brother, and sister-in-law. Firefighter Gerhard was appointed to the FDNY as an Emergency Medical Technician in July 2014 and was first assigned to Station 10 in
Manhattan and later served at Station 47 in Far Rockaway. He entered the Fire Academy in December 2017 and, after graduating in April 2018, was first assigned as a Firefighter to Engine Company 264 in Far Rockaway. In March 2020, he transferred to Ladder Company 134, located in the same firehouse as Engine Compa-
ny 264. He received a special honor for bravery once in his career. But Jesse showed bravery every day. Even in death, as an organ donor, Gerhard continues to save the lives of strangers. “Firefighter Jesse Gerhard dreamed of being a Firefighter his entire life; and he lived that dream, bravely serving the residents of Queens by battling fires and rescuing New Yorkers from harm,” Mayor Eric Adams said. “The heartbreaking loss of this brave young man who was so committed to saving others is a painful reminder of the dangerous and difficult work New York City Firefighters do every single day.” Gerhard also had a creative side. While working as an EMT at Station 10, he had built a kitchen table for the firehouse. “Jesse took it upon himself to build Station 10 a beautiful kitchen table, it represented
BY
our station and the legacy here. Every day we use this table, every day we sit at it, and this will be a piece of him always with us,” FDNY Lieutenant Rob Walsh of Station 10 said. A bunting ceremony was held at the firehouse on Central Avenue on Friday, February 18. FDNY Firefighter Carl Kretkowski said, “I worked with Jesse for the past four years. Jesse was a very hard worker, he didn’t stop, he always wanted to learn. He was a gentle man, we all loved him. He lived and breathed this job, he loved being a Firefighter. Jesse created a bond and a friendship with all of us here that will never be broken.” A wake was held for Firefighter Gerhard in East Islip on Tuesday, February 22. A funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, February 23 at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Bayshore.

Change Coming To Chai?
The abandoned Chai Home for Adults, once a beachfront hotel, has sat untouched and vacant since Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Now, ten years later, there is a proposal to revamp, rebuild and– crucially rezone¬– the property at 125-02 Ocean Promenade (the boardwalk). According to a 56-page document being circulated by members of the Rockaway Civic Association and Belle Harbor Property Owners Association (BPHOA), developers have allegedly drawn various plans to build an 8 or 9-story apartment building on the property, replacing the nearly 100-year-old Chai Home. But at this time, it is not clear if any official paperwork has been filed for such proposals. Early, or those identified as “old” proposals in the document indicated 82 units and “new” proposals indicated as many as 58. Parking, always a question with new construction, indicates that 29 spaces would be available. That number is less than a column that is listed as “required.” According to a chart, required calls for 33 or 38 depending upon the number of the number units. Currently, the building is zoned for R3-X which allows for more modest housing, such as two-family residences, according to Jon Gaska of Community Board 14. The proposal calls for a rezoning to R6 or R7. Nearby oceanfront
buildings are seven stories tall. As we went to press, Gaska said he was unaware of the plan and said he would inquire with City Planning about any official activity regarding the property. The presentation going around appears to be from Manhattan-based DJ Associates Architect, PC with renderings by Urban Cartographics. Harold Paez of the Rockaway Civic Association says his civic has been in ongoing discussions with the current owners, then-Councilman Eric Ulrich and now with Councilwoman Joann Ariola about the property. This presentation was offered as part of the discussions. Last spring, BHHS Laffey International Realty advertised the 1.1-acre property for sale at a whopping $10.9 million. It is not clear if anyone new bought the property. The latest property records show the entire lot to be 16,000 square feet and the building was last sold in 2015 for just over $1 million. According to tax records, the official owner is CHAI BONIM LLC. The annual tax bill is more than $80,000. The BHPOA has a committee reviewing the 56-page document and according to Paul King, the organization’s president, they hope to present a full report at the general meeting scheduled for March 15. We will provide more detail in the coming weeks as we learn more.

Heading East by Southeast In my usual Jed Clampett attire, I loaded up the truck and moved towards Beverly – Road, that is. I told the GPS to avoid a massive storm and tornadoes beating the hell out of the Midwest and get me to Brooklyn or Queens where it’s a winter I recognize. After a few weeks in Arizona, I had to get home and I really wanted to avoid the mayhem I tasted in Amarillo when ice and snow caused trucks to slide into gullies like falling bowling pins. So, I headed towards Marfa, Texas. Oh, wait. My quick review of Arizona as a winter getaway is a rave. I’m a full DFD: down for the desert. Added bonus: you don’t see anyone from Rockaway. I mean, you go to Florida,
and it feels like you’re in Stop and Shop. Don’t get your Depends in an uproar, I’m only kidding my snowbirded friends. In Arizona, you might wake up to chilly weather. It might be 30 degrees at 9 a.m. but it climbs about ten degrees an hour until it’s 70 or so. You start off the day by thinking you’ve made a big mistake coming here but three hours later you’re in heaven. It helps improve your empathy skills. It’s the best of both worlds. Each morning, for about three hours, you feel the pain of your frozen Rockaway friends and by afternoon you’re sharing screenshots of the weather channel with your friends in Florida. You know, once you leave New
York, no matter where you go, everything is twenty minutes away. Which is perfect. But you know what else is everywhere? Those six or eight lane commercial strips lined with franchises. And when those places become popular, the twenty minutes is more like 35 and 40. Those traffic lights on those six-lane commercial strips? The seasons change faster. Anyway, enough about Arizona – I want to keep it a secret, like Rockaway. I headed to Marfa, Texas, 640 miles away, with an overnight stop in Lordsburg, New Mexico. The whole ride home was going to be about 3,000 miles. Lots of people say, that’s a lot of driving. You know what’s a lot of driving? Driving through Rockaway and then through Long Beach. Driving to a CYO game up Woodhaven on a Sunday night. Driving through the Dunkin Donuts drive-thru. Those drives will kill you. The open highway? Piece of cake. And the things you see. Irrigation sprinklers that look like darning needles or dragon flies

In Louisiana, you see airboats in the middle of fields, and you start to wonder what the –and then you realize they’re ready to go when that field floods. Which it will. Down in the bayou. Where was I? Oh, Texas is so big it doesn’t have internet. At least it didn’t for a couple hundred miles. I was lost but I wasn’t. I had no GPS but since the road had no exits or turnoffs, I made the bold choice to keep driving. Having no internet, no podcasts, nothing to listen to, made me long for sound of connecting to the internet and AOL with a 56k modem. See, the road is good; it’s the staying that can be bumpy. Especially tonight in a Best Western in Mississippi. I think the cops just took somebody out of a room two doors down. Lots of mo-fos flying; radios too loud. A GROUP’S PLEA Dear Editor: This is a letter sent to Kelly Griffith, Special Land Use Program Manager, Gateway National Recreation Area. Please print in The Rockaway Times: Dear Kelly, As March is rapidly approaching, the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League must begin preparations for our pre-season meeting. It has been two years since we have been able to provide this service to the thousands of fam-
ilies in our community who participate in it each summer. To organize 76 teams and thousands of players it takes many hours of planning, ordering and maintaining equipment, and the many other things that go into providing recreation to our community. We operate with a committee of six volunteers who gladly give their time to provide one of the best summer nights to the community on a weekly basis every summer from 1987 until 2019. While the tragedy of Covid taking away our 2020 season was understandable, the confusion at the NPS in 2021, unable to find anyone to make a decision last season was disappointing. The decision then to charge us $15,000 for the last six weeks, or $25,000 for the season was quite unacceptable. The price, and logistics of organizing a thousand people on such short notice made it impossible for us to get the 2021 season underway. We are a self-sufficient league. We provide and set up our own equipment, we or-

ganize the 76 teams, keep the standings, provide a webpage, and all the tedious work that goes into running a successful league. All we ask from the NPS is sand, empty sand, nothing else. To compare us to similar leagues throughout the city which are provided the equipment, organization, etc. is not a fair comparison. We use the parking lot after hours. We pay to keep the bathroom open. We leave the beach cleaner than when we get there. When comparing us to city leagues, where the equipment and organization is provided, is not an equal comparison. If The National
The Rockaway Times Park Service was running the league, or if we were running the league as a for profit business, I would understand the exorbitant prices. But basically we only need sand and a bathroom. We appreciate the decades of partnership that has made the league the outstanding service to the community and hope to come to some equitable agreement, where, working together, the National Park will provide recreation to the community. Awaiting your reply, Steve Gifford and the Rockaway Beach Volleyball Committee

The concessions were hardly open and offered nothing, buildings decayed, the place looked abandoned even with beachgoers filling the sand. Though as the place declined, fewer and fewer people came. Through it all, a bunch of volunteers ran a wonderful event each Wednesday night through the summer. When Riis Park Bazaar came in and gave Riis some new life and injected some hope, the Volleyball league was the mainstay that
only helped the Bazaar’s efforts. Now it’s all disappearing. NPS has offered terms that the Bazaar finds so onerous they withdrew their bid to run the concessions there. And Riis (NPS) officials respond to Volleyball requests so slowly that sometimes it’s just impossible for the league to act (since that means getting the word out to a thousand people). And now, NPS estimates they’ll have to charge between $14,000-$30,000 for use of the beach. Shame on NPS. Again. ***** The stars have aligned! We now have a monthly horoscope column. The Rockaway Times ***** Who fell asleep with the music blasting? Lots and lots of people online, from Belle Harbor to Rockaway Beach to Broad Channel and even Howard Beach reported music blasting in the wee hours Tuesday morning. Chase Hires Seasoned Banker To Close Rockaway’s Racial Wealth Gap By Kami-Leigh Agard
As part of JPMorgan Chase’s $30 billion Racial Equity Commitment to drive inclusive economic growth and financial health among Black and Latino communities, Natasha Castillo was appointed in the newly-created role as vice president, community manager for the Rockaway peninsula and Valley Stream areas. Chase first announced their initiative in October 2020, following the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, and last December, the international banking firm hired Castillo, and four other banking experts to focus on NYC’s most racially diverse borough, Queens. From Flushing to Rockaway, these community ambassadors will connect their respective communities to tools and resources focused on boosting financial health, homeownership, small businesses and nonprofits.

Just two months into her role, Castillo has already hit the ground running, meeting with various community leaders, business proprietors and nonprofits at various meet-andgreet events on the peninsula, including the recent community mixer hosted by the Rockaway Business Alliance at The Rocka-

way Hotel. The Rockaway Times met Castillo at another local meetand-greet event hosted by nonprofit, Campaign For Hunger, at their newly-opened café, Beach Dunes Eats and Arts, and chatted about her new role at Chase, and how Rockaway can directly benefit from the global banking firm’s billion-dollar initiative. Originally from Hempstead, Castillo, proudly self-described as a “Queens girl,” has lived in Queens since the age of eight. She received her undergraduate degree in business administration from St. John’s University’s Queens campus, and after working for various retail organizations and a law firm, began her banking career at Chase 13 years ago, and has kept with the firm ever since. Castillo shared that what attracted her to the new role was her personal lack-luster financial empowerment education
as a first-generation American and being in a position to turn around the storyline for present and future descendants of immigrants. “I’m a first generation-American, my mom is from Jamaica and my dad is from Ecuador. I witnessed how my family struggled with their financial health. Growing up, I noticed that within Caribbean and Latino cultures, we don’t have money conversations. So as a young adult, I did not have a strong handle on my finances. Had I not been working with Chase, I probably would be struggling financially. However, because of the resources and knowledge I was able to obtain from the bank, I’m in a position to educate my community. “With 13 years in banking, another incentive for me to take on this role is how different it’s from Continued on page 44

Ariola is Sworn In as Councilwoman
Supporters and friends, along with elected officials from across the city, gathered together at Russo’s on the Bay on Sunday, February 20 to celebrate the Ceremonial Swearing in of Councilwoman Joann Ariola. With her husband and children by her side and her mother Theresa holding the bible, Councilwoman Ariola was sworn in as the first woman to ever hold the seat in District 32. Delivering the oath of office was retired NYS Supreme Court
Justice, Augustus C.Agate, a long time friend and supporter of Ariola. New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, who was a speaker at the event said, “I am here to celebrate with you all, to rejoice for the NYC Council and to bring you my gratitude for electing an amazing leader.” Speaker Adams has shown the faith she has in Ariola when appointing her to several Council Committees including Pub-
lic Safety, Veterans, Resiliency and Waterfronts, Transportation and as the Chair of the Fire and Emergency Management Committee. Councilwoman Ariola was elected to the seat on November 2, 2021 when she was victorious on election night with over 67% of the vote in her favor. Since the beginning of her term, the Councilwoman has laid out a 100 day plan, visiting with all of the schools, local civic organizations, precincts and creating Community Solution Task Forc-
es in business districts throughout the 32nd Council District to focus on concerns and to help support the business owners. “I am looking forward to serving this district and being a loud voice for our constituents at City Hall,” Ariola stated. The councilwoman’s District Office is located at 114-12 Beach Channel Drive in Rockaway Park. She will be hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony and Coffee with the Councilwoman event this Sunday, February 27 at 11 a.m. For details, please call 718-318-6411.

Awaken Your Weary Bones Leaving my home early to open the yoga studio my daughter says, “all you need is your bones to get there.” Weary and tired of the cold winter, I envisioned my bones taking me for a walk to Ocean Bliss Yoga, a short two blocks away. This would become my theme for this Friday’s class. Choosing to use no props on this day but my aching bones would prove to be magical. The simple things in life keep me content and happy. Less is more. Slow and steady wins the race. Breathing in, I feel my heart relax into this mo-
ment and I begin to soften. The obstacles are the path so I am embracing the wind, cold, and snow. Winter can make you feel vibrant. Waking up each day, I say Thank You. This is a precious moment and I am exploding with gratitude for the blessings. I sit with my coffee and send prayers for those who do not feel happy. In our meditation practice we send loving kindness to ourselves, our love ones, fellow neighbors and the final loving kindness is sent to the person you do not get along
with. It is one of the most powerful meditation practices I have ever witnessed. On this day, I wake up with many others at 7 a.m. to be guided into the day with compassion for all beings. It shift’s my energy by making space for everything and everyone without judgement and forgiveness in the heart. Not everyone can truly forgive and move on and it’s OK. We are all very unique and born into this world to live the life we were given. So many people are weary and tired. You can begin by taking one day at a time. No rush. No timeline. Be here now and relax into your space. Take time to notice how you are contracting and releasing. There will be days you will be exhausted and tender. It’s ok to feel fragile. We are living in a time of great unease. Allowing yourself to LET IN whatever is giving you angst will help to calm the ripples in your mind. So often we try to let go and do not give ourselves time to be with our uncomfortable feelings. My experience with discomfort is to be with it, take it
in and when ready let it go. On this beautiful Sunday, my heart is drawn to guide a restorative workshop, knowing people need to relax into their bodies and hold space for themselves. The energy in the room is palpable and the workshop is sold out. In this ninety minute workshop I witness healing and renewal. The sun is shining through the windows, the room is toasty warm and the students are relaxed in their bodies. I read this at the end of class: “Her nervous system had been through so much. She decided to spend the rest of her life calming the inflammation. Thoughts, feelings, memories, behavior, relations. She soothed it all with deep, Loving breaths and gentle practices. The softer she became with herself, the softer she became with the world, which became softer with her. She birthed a new generational cycle: PEACE.” Jaiya John May you be healthy, May you be happy, May you be free of suffering, May you live with ease.

Behind the Counter: Tom Murphy and Curran’s By Dan Guarino
Step inside Curran’s Superior Meats one morning and you’ll see why Rockaway often feels like a small town. Nearly every customer coming through its doors stops to exchange greetings, and share neighborhood and family news with owner Tom Murphy. Murphy himself never fails to chat, thank them for their business and wish them a good day. “I would describe us as a friendly store that serves nothing but the best,” he says. “People feel comfortable here. Everyone is welcome.” Curran’s has been a peninsula mainstay since 1960, when owner/proprietor John Curran opened shop on Beach 129th Street. Both Curran’s and Murphy have come a long way, and about a mile, since then. “I never in my life thought I’d be a butcher. That I’d own this business!” says Murphy, who has lived in Broad Channel and Rockaway all his life. “I worked in delis. John Curran used to come in, to get coffee. He told my boss, ‘I like this kid.’ One day he asked to see me about working for him. I was like 20. I knew nothing. He trained me. He taught me everything. He made me a butcher.” Still, his future in the field was not a done deal. “I explored. I got involved with a friend in running a bar. Tom Murphy’s Pub on Beach 97th Street. That was back in the ‘80s. It was great.” But Curran hadn’t forgotten about Murphy. Older now and ready to step back from the business, he “invited to me with him in Oyster Bay. He wanted me to take over. I didn’t have the money for that,” Murphy recalled. But an uncle fronted him the funds and Curran waited for him to take over. Two things, however, did not change with new ownership. “I kept it ‘Curran’s’. Everybody loves Curran’s. That didn’t change,” he said. Neither did Curran’s devotion to quality. “He always said to me there is absolutely no substitute for quality. That’s
Tom Murphy of Currans.

why I kept all the same (topnotch) suppliers,” Murphy said. But what draw customers into Curran’s goes beyond meat. “We’re a family community here and that’s what Curran’s is about,” Murphy said. “No one is a number here.” All businesses have their challenges. Murphy’s were both monumental and personal. “We took over in 2005. Then we lost it all to Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Wiped out.” Everything—equipment, inventory, cases, even the store’s location—all gone. He says though, more than once, the community stepped up. “A customer who owns the build-

ing on 116th said, ‘Tom, I might have a spot for you.’” A harder blow was when, two years ago, Murphy lost his adult son, Thomas John Murphy. “We used to come here every Sunday and have mac and cheese together,” he recalls. Even now a portrait of his son and himself looks out over the shop, lovingly painted into the fanciful mural by artist Geoff Rawling which spreads around its walls. “I could have thrown in the towel. But the Rockaway community really supported me, brought me back up,” Murphy said. He has sought to pay that goodwill back, whether it’s “supporting basketball, base-
ball, the Graybeards” or anything else he can do. Murphy also ‘hit the road’, videoing his online “Tips from Tom” recipe segments at local restaurants struggling during Covid. Even during the pandemic, his store never stopped serving its customers, while doing everything to keep them healthy and safe. “We wear our gloves, our masks, get our customers to wear theirs. We’ve gotten good feedback. We spray the store constantly. We stay late to make sure everything is clean. Every night. We do it to protect our community.” He proudly points to his staff of eight, all of whom have stayed with him all the way through, as a source of the store’s good spirt and success. “They’re fantastic,” Murphy said. As he is speaking, Murphy stops to greet a longtime customer, give tips on how to prepare the cuts she’s purchased, and give her a handknit Curran’s wool cap. Another mentions it’s her first visit, that a friend had suggested Curran’s when she was looking for a fresh butcher, and she’s delighted they did. Before she leaves, Murphy has thanked her, suggested other products she might enjoy and advised on how to get the best out of them. Among many items, Curran’s carries soups, cooked chickens, their very popular Kansas City Steaks, chateaubriand, boneless sirloin, Bell & Evans cutlets, turkey, boneless turkey breast, a creative range of daily fresh made sausage, their own marinated products and much more. Anything they don’t have, Murphy explains, they will get for you, and anything you are not completely happy with, they will make right. A businessman, and a poet and singer as well, Murphy notes Rockaway has had its doubters. But like himself and Curran’s, it always comes back. “It’s an American story.” “Rockaway,” he says, “is a beautiful place.” Photos by Dan Guarino

A Big Can-Do Effort Gets Rolling By Katie McFadden
A nickel can go a long way. Kids across the peninsula have been learning this lesson over the past few years as part of a successful can-collection effort to support charitable causes. There’s no doubt Rockaway is a place where neighbors step up for those in need. Some efforts become large-scale, wellknown fundraisers. But others remain under the radar. For the past few years, there has been an ongoing effort between local school kids and neighbors that started with collecting a few cans and bottles and has turned into a successful effort to help different groups in need. About five years ago, Bobby Zimmer, a member of the Rockaway Civic Association, began collecting cans and bottles from neighbors of the bungalows around Beach 109th Street and exchanging them for a few cents each as a way to raise money to pay for the landscaping bill for the beachfront garden on the block. It then turned into an effort between Zimmer and Patricia Wood to raise money for American flags on their block in Rockaway Park. From flag money, the bottle and can collection became an effort to raise money to help pay for a phone for a neighbor. When the Friends of Memorial Circle put out a call a few years ago, asking for donations to help with the maintenance of the park, the bottle and can collecting effort grew, with local school kids starting to get involved. In 2020, when the pandemic hit and shut things down, kids were left with few opportunities to get involved in community service, at a time when the community needed more help than ever. Patricia Wood’s daughter, Liz Woods Geraghty had an idea. “We realized this effort could go into other little things, especially with my house and all the diet sodas we drink. I had a couple kids that had started doing this before the pandemic but once that started, I reached out to Mrs. Greene of St. Francis de Sales’ religious
instruction program and asked her if the kids in her class could set aside bottles and cans from their homes, drop them off in a bag on the side of my house so it was socially distant, and then text me their names, school and grade, and how many bags they left in exchange for one hour of community service per bag,” Geraghty explained. Zimmer regularly stops by Geraghty’s home to pick up the bottles and take them to bottle exchange sites like those at Costco, the local beer distributor and other areas, to flip them into money. The seemingly simple effort became a big success. Geraghty says in addition to students from SFDS, others from P.S. 114 and Scholars’ Academy have also joined in the ongoing effort. “Every time we hear something in the neighborhood where a family is in need, we figure out what’s needed and we donate money to it,” Geraghty said. Among their fundraising efforts are money for the Graybeards’ turkey drive, food for food pantries, funds for Roxbury resident Olivia Benedetto and her family after she was left paralyzed from a skiing accident, money to help cover healthcare costs for neighbors who don’t have insurance, buying a meal for families going through a hardship, donations to the Stephen Siller Foundation, donations to the Dayton Tower fire victims, donations

to Julia O’Sullivan’s Team Sister Strong for LLS, and even to help nuns build wells for those without water in Nigeria, something that Mrs. Greene requested extra help with. “These kids were bringing bottles and cans to Liz’s house with liquid still left in them, and we were flipping them to turn them into cash to make donations to help Mrs. Greene with her effort to get water to people who don’t have any. It teaches kids to recycle and it’s for a good cause,” Zimmer said. “All of these ideas don’t require a lot of effort. It’s just a good idea and people always want to give here.” According to Zimmer, the can and bottle collection effort has led to thousands of dollars in donations to various causes. “It roughly works out to about $2,000 to $2,300 a year,” he said. And it isn’t stopping anytime soon. “This is ongoing, yearround,” Geraghty said. “We don’t stop.” And it keeps grow-
ing. “This started with the SFDS religious instruction group who needed community service for confirmation and now we have St. Francis’ National Junior Honor Society getting involved,” Geraghty shared. “I had one kid who dropped off 14 bags of bottles and cans the other day.” Geraghty hopes they can keep that momentum and growth going. “We’re trying to expand it better and give these kids some recognition for what they’ve been doing,” she said. “It’s been a bit of a secret, but it’s catching momentum,” Zimmer said. “Anybody can do something like this. It doesn’t take a lot and in today’s crazy times, it’s a good thing.” Geraghty and Zimmer are open to anyone joining in this effort, especially local youth. For more information on how to get involved, reach out to Liz Wood Geraghty at 646-2083404.

Facts You Probably Don’t Need In 2012, the remains of King Richard II were found beneath a parking lot.
AVOID BEING A “NOTCH” Did you ever notice real estate broker advertisements with the rectangular boxes “x’ed out”? I still do it in my ads once in a while– it shows market share. However, this does a disservice to current listings which are NOT being shown due to this technique. Also, it can be construed as in “poor taste” towards the homeowners who sold the “x’ed” out homes. In fact, some people have pointed out that they don’t want to represent another “Notch” on the gunbelt of some gunslinger broker. Consequently, although I can fill up two advertising pages with notched
listings, I’ve been avoiding it. In the future, whenever I utilize this tool, its function will be informative – just to let the public know that the property was sold relatively recently. People don’t need to know that a property was sold eight months ago! Recently, I wrote in this column about Rabbi Hillel’s saying: “If I am not for myself, then who will be for me?...” Therefore, a certain amount of chest pounding is a necessary sales tool – but, it should be tasteful, and as inoffensive as possible. Don’t be somebody’s “NOTCH.” Call me. Love, Robin.

Andy Feldman’s Unbelievable Brisket By Sharon Feldman
This is based on 8-10 servings. Tell your butcher how many people and remember, brisket shrinks. Ingredients: Brisket (first cut, trimmed .. but leave some fat) 1 large or 2 medium sweet onions, finely chopped garlic, chopped Olive Oil 2 condensed Rokeach tomato and mushroom sauce (or soup) 1 can beef broth or stock brown granulated sugar to taste (we use 4-5 tablespoons) baby carrots ++++ Directions: Put the meat and oil in an roasting pan and sear on all
sides. Remove from pan. To pan, add onions until translucent (not browned). Add garlic (we like a lot) and stir. Add tomato soup and mushrooms, beef stock and brown sugar to taste. Simmer 10-15 minutes. Return meat FAT SIDE UP and cover. Bake at 325 degrees 3-4 hours until fork tender. BASTE every 1/2 hour. Turn meat 1/2 way through cooking. Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen discovered X-rays in 1895 while doing research in his lab in Germany. He was experimenting with cathode ray tubes when he covered a tube with heavy black cloth and was astonished to find a nearby fluorescent screen glowing with green light. As he had no idea what caused the green light, he called the discovery “X” rays. He continued to experiment with X-rays and eventually took an X-ray photograph of his wife’s hand. Seeing the bones in her hand, she was sure she was dying. Early use of X-rays rapidly became widespread. It was thought to be an exciting discovery with limitless potential. In the 1930s and ‘40s, shoe stores offered customers free X-rays of their feet. Only a few scientists like Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla raised concerns about the potential harms from X-rays.
The Rockaway Times
Seeing Through X-Ray History Soon after the discovery of X-rays, French scientist Henri Becquerel found another source of penetrating rays by using minerals that were naturally phosphorescent. One of these minerals was uranium. Marie Curie and her husband Pierre were intrigued by Becquerel’s discovery, and they found another similar mineral and named it polonium after her native Poland. She also found yet another mineral, radium, which she worked extensively with. Polonium and radium are more radioactive than uranium. Marie, her husband, and Becquerel shared a 1903 Nobel Prize. Curie promoted radium to alleviate suffering from many ailments. Not surprisingly, she died of aplastic anemia, a known effect of radiation exposure. Today, we know that X-rays are part of the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation. The spectrum is: Radio waves/microwaves/ infrared/visible light/ultraviolet/X-rays/gamma rays.
Starting on the left with radio waves, which are low frequency/long wavelength, the wavelength, frequency, and energy of electromagnetic waves increases up to gamma rays, which are very high frequency and short wavelength. Ionizing radiation, which is radiation with high enough energy to ionize atoms and cause chemical reactions, includes extreme ultraviolet, soft X-rays, hard X-rays, and gamma rays. A basic tenet of cancer treatment is that cancer cells divide much faster than normal cells. Ionizing radiation damages cells that are rapidly dividing, which is why radiation is used in cancer treatment. Unfortunately, the human body has cells that naturally divide quickly. These cells are found in the bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract, and the neurovascular system, which is why radiation toxicity, and sometimes radiation treatment side effects, primarily affect these areas. Fortunately, or unfortunately, there is an extensive amount
of information and knowledge regarding radiation toxicity that has been amassed since 1945. The survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were closely and extensively studied and followed for the rest of their lives. This trove of information has been added to by nuclear accidents over the years, starting with the Kyshtym disaster of 9/29/1957. In the years after WWII, the Soviets were desperate to catch up to the U.S. in nuclear capabilities. Due to a lack of knowledge, their early nuclear facilities were hastily and shoddily built. In 1957, their plutonium processing facility near the town of Kyshtym exploded, causing nuclear fallout in a wide area. Other disasters followed, including Chernobyl and Fukushima Daiichi. Currently, medical science still relies on X-rays. Perhaps one day X-rays will be supplanted by MRI or PET technology, or some yet to be discovered technology. The Foodie Report SORRENTINO’S MARKET By Scott Ruscillo
Well folks, sorry I disappeared for a while, between the computer business and my rather new venture of working out and boxing five days a week, there hasn’t been much time for writing. I decided to work on my fitness about 11 months ago and so far, so good. Yes, I still eat the massive meals for three, however now that is only on weekends and the fitness people I’ve befriended call these “cheat meals.” Healthier eating and fitness is something I would have never expected to stick with or even enjoy. Burn Fitness located at 102-32 Rockaway Beach Blvd is my new home away from home. The Burn Fitness facility is such a free and inviting environment where anyone can feel confident and work on oneself. I was the dude that would come home after a long day and pour a neat glass of Blanton’s or Weller’s bourbon as a way to end my day and sometimes continue working in my office after making service calls to clients all day. Nowadays I come home, eat a clean healthy meal that is portioned small then hit the gym in the evening. I am slowly still getting accustomed to eating less and healthier, even though sometimes I want to just randomly drive over to the Crossbay Diner and bury myself in a massive amounts of food. Don’t get me started on how amazing their mozzarella sticks and marinara is… My trainer Shaun at Burn Fitness has taught me how to properly workout and he continues to help motivate me. I train with Shaun three days a week with working out and boxing, then two days, I workout alone. If anyone is looking for advice or is interested in having Shaun train them, reach out to Burn Fitness anytime! It’s been a great experience and eliminated my dad bod in 11 months’ time. Alright enough about me, it’s time to talk about Sorrentino’s Market, a fairly new Rockaway
Gem of which my father happens to be one of their biggest fans. I recently found out local Firefighter Kevin Dolan is another huge fan of Sorrentino’s and when he and I spoke, he explained to me just how generous Sorrentino’s has been. Many may not be aware but the local butcher has been supporting firefighters and police quite often, especially in their time of need. I was quite impressed when Kevin told me this. Between my dad and Kevin, I decided to write about the Market for anyone who may not already be a fan. Sorrentino’s Market opened in Rockaway in 2019 and since then, it has quickly gained popularity. Despite Curran’s Superior Meats on Beach 116th Street being a longtime staple as Rockaway’s butcher, Sorrentino says with their shop focusing more on Italian specialties and prepared meals, their differences will give shoppers a little something different. Sorrentino’s offers a vast array of Italian specialties like dry aged steaks, stuffed chicken breasts, ready-to-heat chicken cutlets or meatballs in sauce, braciole, a selection of homemade sausages, including their popular broccoli rabe sausage, plus fresh cheeses, prepared antipasti and more. I really love the various chop meat options that they have in the summer, whether I am making a simple burger or a meatloaf, they have various meats with cheeses and
To advertise in The Rockaway Times call 718-634-3030 · ads@RockawayTimes.com
other delicious options that are added into the chop meat. Besides Sorrentino’s meat being top notch, I’ve catered from Sorrentino’s and was highly impressed with everything we ordered. I tend to still dream about the Buffalo Chicken hero with Jalapeno, Mozzarella, Lettuce, Tomato, Hot Sauce and Ranch Dressing. Another favorite hero we catered for a family event was the “The Sorrentino's” hero consisting of Chicken Cutlet, Fried Eggplant, Fresh Mozzarella, Roasted Peppers, Prosciutto, Baby Arugula, and Balsamic Glaze. I am a huge fan of their marinated skirt steak, it’s all prepped and ready to throw on the grill or pan for a fast and enjoyable meal. I usually pair the skirt steak with their red skin potato salad or side of marinated mushrooms. A great lunch option is the Tuscan Grilled Chicken hero. This hero is a nice healthy option with plenty of protein. The hero consists of fresh spinach, roasted red peppers, garlic and provolone. Lately what I find goes great to pair with a cold winter night is the homemade chicken pot pie, fresh tender chicken and a perfect crunchy
buttery crust that will have you going back for more. Let’s retouch on the fresh cheeses Sorrentino’s offers. Nothing makes me happier than some fresh smoked mozzarella to go with thin sliced Sopressata. This combo is at just about every family event that we have. For Christmas, my brothers know to stop at Sorrentino’s on their way and grab some fresh smoked mozzarella and Sopressata for the table. Sorrentino’s was welcomed into Rockaway back in 2019 and so far they are a big hit. I hope many locals will continue to support them during these hard times. They have proven to give back to our community and support our FDNY and NYPD, which means a lot in my world. Please continue supporting our local businesses as much as you can, they need us and we need them. Sorrentino’s is located at 9920 Rockaway Beach Blvd. For info, call 718-843-9800.

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
Show Rockaway Love For Tornado-Flattened Kentucky’s Autism Community I’ve been asked what inspired me to host a benefit for the autism community in western Kentucky, flattened by what Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear dubbed, “the worst, most devastating tornado event in Kentucky history.” Do I personally know anyone in the region? The answer is no. Do I
have personal stake in the region? The answer is yes—commonalty—families who live the day-to-day challenges of autism life. Though western Kentucky is approximately 1,413 kilometers, over 14 hours away from where we live in Rockaway—folks, here on the peninsula —from Breezy to Bayswa-

ter, and Broad Channel—many of us can relate to the trauma natural disasters such as Superstorm Sandy heaved not just on our homes, but our hearts. When I reached out to Jessica Muensterman, executive director of western Kentucky nonprofit, Experiencing Autism Together (EAT), she was incredulous that a small far-away community in Rockaway Beach, NY wanted to lend a helping hand. She immediately relayed what their autism community was hurting for—money to purchase adaptive equipment, toys, books and basic necessities such as food and propane gas. Folks, join Rockaway Beach Autism Families this Saturday, February 26 at RBQ for an allday music festival to show our Rockaway love to our western Kentucky neighbors. As I shared with Muensterman, Rockaway maybe a small community, but we are huge in heart. It’s been over two months since the series of record-breaking tornadoes hit Kentucky, and residents of the Blue Grass State are still reeling. And, unfortunately, families of individuals with special needs are usually forgotten. Post-Sandy, for months, my daughter, Soa, and her special-needs Rockaway peers did not receive services, and some like ours were displaced from their homes. Muensterman said prior to when the first tornado hit, a family evacuated to an Airbnb, then an EF-4 tornado ripped the roof off, leaving the family no other option, but to relocate to a hotel. Faced with no home and no prospect of returning to his familiar surroundings and routine, their 15-year-old autistic son locked himself in the hotel room and resorted to self-harming. Muensterman said, “With some children on the spectrum, uncertainty and changes to their daily routine is very frightening, and this boy is still especially having a tough time. Insurance is helping out with some stuff, but they are still gaps. It’s all very daunting.” When I first heard about the tornadoes, a poignant memory arose. With Sandy, my family had evacuated to an inn in Howard Beach, which was chockfull of Broad Chan-
The Rockaway Times nel and Breezy Point families. Children played, giggling hysterically as they chased each other up and down the halls, seemingly oblivious to the devastation at home. In the inn, we had no heat, and electricity was spotty, so families in that short time became neighbors, pooling resources with each other. I remember seeing one Breezy woman in tears. She said that she had no idea how to tell her two girls that their home had burned down. Those memories all came flooding back as I watched the news footage about Kentucky’s tornado event. Many perceive recovery as the physical rebuilding, but what about the spiritual? Just like us with Sandy, Kentuckians are still dealing with never-ending battles with FEMA, SBA, insurance companies and more bureaucracy. However, as attested by Muensterman, a divorced mom of three boys, who are all on the autism spectrum, the spiritual resurrection is even harder. This is why those in the autism community, like Muensterman's and ours, lean so much on each other for morale. Folks, these people need us. We are Rockaway strong, so let’s show some Rockaway love for western Kentucky’s autism community this Saturday, February 26, 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. at RBQ (97-20 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) Many thanks to Walker Hornung, the RockA-Wades with Patti Blue, and DJ Daryl a.k.a. D Man for performing. There will be 50/50s and a pop-up raffle. All proceeds go towards western Kentucky nonprofit, Experiencing Autism Together. RBAF members, Jason Esposito, is vending his handcrafted Easter and St. Patrick's Day items just in time for Rockaway's parade day; Patrick Dydzuhn will present a mini documentary; and William Hernandez is auctioning his paintings. its goal to eliminate the racial wealth gap for underserved communities.” On Tuesday, in a press release Chase announced it has invested and committed the first $40 million of its $50 million equity pledge to Black and Latino-led minority depository institutions. They also established a racial equity program, providing tax-credit investment pricing for Black-led, Black-owned and Black-serving nonprofits and businesses. This tax credit provides investors a tax incentive for investing in low-income communities. Plus, financing from the tax credit will benefit community projects, including shelters, healthcare clinics and small businesses. With the $30 billion dollar initiative repeatedly being referred as “eliminating the racial wealth gap for Black and Latino communities,” RT asked Castillo if other minority groups, including Asians, fall under that umbrella. She relayed, “I’m on a team that represents the diverse borough of Queens. One colleague covers Richmond
Hill, the other, the Flushing area. So we all work with these communities’ underserved populaces. We primarily speak about the Black and Latino communities because they face the biggest gap in terms of financial empowerment. However, Chase’s initiative serves any underserved group that would benefit from the firm’s commitment to break down systematic barriers to financial empowerment.” Castillo said anyone, whether a business, nonprofit or community leader, who sees a need in the community, can contact her. “People are free to come visit me at my branch station (1912 Mott Avenue, Far Rockaway) or email: natasha.e.castillo@ chase.com. You don’t have to bank with Chase to participate in our programs. This initiative is all about closing the wealth gap and boosting financial literacy for all underserved residents in Rockaway,” Castillo said. Can’t Stop Dear Enchantress, I have an addictive personality, anything I am into, I get obsessed. It could be a woman, alcohol, marijuana, a painting, it doesn't matter. Whatever I'm doing, I love it and I can't stop. Sometimes it's just thoughts and sometimes it's actions. I wouldn't say I'm an alcoholic. I don't crave drinking, but when I'm doing it, I drink to excess. If I'm dating someone, I can't stop thinking of her and I overdo it every time and text too much and they end things with me. Is it possible for me to be normal? I want to be more relaxed. I'm in my 30's and I worry that I'll be an old dude that is known as a creep.
CHASE HIRES SEASONED BANKER Continued from Page 10 a traditional bank manager. However, with this role, I get to be out in the field, actively engaged with community leaders, residents and small business owners—all in the effort to help them improve their financial health,” Castillo said. When asked about what she perceives are Rockaway’s needs— especially with residents facing fiscal challenges due to inflation, rising prices, food insecurity; plus businesses and nonprofits struggling to get out of the red in the current endemic—Castillo boiled it down to education— promoting financial literacy and access. “Just from meeting already with multiple organizations, pressing needs I have identified include the youth not being able to graduate high school nor having resources to continue their

education; small businesses’ yearning to grow, be more bankable, and obtain credit; residents’ challenges with not just securing, but maintaining home ownership, plus coping with the rising costs of daily living. I have access to several of Chase’s internal and external partners, who can help address the community’s needs. Once I assess a request from an organization, business or community leader, I can conduct financial literacy workshops at their respective location, or at the Chase branch, where I am stationed in Mott Avenue.” Regarding Chase opening new branches, plus importantly bringing the Arverne branch back to full service, Castillo said, “As an ambassador for Chase, I do know the closure of the Arverne branch has been a great concern, and I have taken that feedback to my internal stakeholders. As far as what will happen with the landscape of that branch and exploring opening new branches, I don’t have the answer yet. That’s all to be foreseen as Chase progresses with

Wrestle Talk WRESTLING QUESTIONS By Eric Jayden
This week we will take the time to answer your questions. I want to thank you all for sending in your questions in. The first question of the week comes from Alex R. in East York, Brooklyn and he asked, "What are your thoughts about Jay White appearing in IMPACT Wrestling?" Alex, I'm super excited to see Jay White make his appearance in IMPACT Wrestling. I feel it was a matter of time until Jay White would come to the U.S. from New Japan Pro Wrestling. He is an incredibly talented wrestler, and this will bring many eyes from Japan to the IMPACT Brand. The second question of the week comes from Theresa M. in Rockaway Beach and she asked, "What do you think about Cody Rhodes leaving All Elite Wrestling and do you think he will return back to the World Wres-
tling Entertainment?" Theresa, I absolutely believe Cody will be returning back to the WWE, the place where he started his career and I feel he will end his career with them. As for him leaving AEW, you have to look at the situation that was reported, that he lost all creative booking decisions and that was something he loved to do. At the same time, his contract was up and the opportunity for him to go back to the WWE opened up. We should be seeing him on WWE Television very soon. The third question of the week comes from David L. in Washington Heights, and he asked, "Are the rumors of Stone Cold Steve Austin making an appearance at Wrestlemania true?" Well David, I have to say, Yes, the rumors and reports of a possible Steve Austin return to Wrestlemania are true. Along with who Steve Austin would face
off with if he does return back to the ring at the WWE's Biggest Event of the Year! Now, if he would make his return, I would love to see him face off against Cody Rhodes. We will keep you posted! The fourth and last question of the week comes from Jack H. in Rockaway Park and he said, "I'm going to the WWE Show on March 5 at Madison Square Garden. Do you think Bobby Lashley will beat Brock
Lesnar for the WWE Championship before Wrestlemania?" Hey, Jack, I actually don't believe Bobby Lashley will beat Brock Lesnar for the title on March 5. Bobby has been chasing Brock to get the title back, but Brock is on fire and I don't see him dropping the WWE Championship on March 5. Enjoy the show! Send any questions or comments to eavil183@yahoo.com and have a great weekend!
