Ranked Choice Voting To Determine City Council 31 Winner By Katie McFadden
The results are in, mostly, but it may be a few weeks before District 31 will find out who its next City Council Member will be. In a historic voting process, ranked choice voting will come into play for the first time in New York City to determine the winner of the race. With roughly 7,000 votes, turnout was low in a district of more than 100,000 registered voters in early voting and on election day, Tuesday February 23, for the special election to fill former Councilman Donovan Richards’ seat for City Council District 31. But those who voted partook in a new voting process for the first time—ranked choice voting. Voters had the opportunity to rank a top five choice of candidates in a pool of nine. After the polls closed at 9 p.m., the results started to come in. However, the winner remains to be seen. No candidate passed the 50% threshold to be declared winner, so ranked choice voting will officially come into play to determine the winner. As we go to press, Selvena Brooks-Powers holds the lead with 38.07% of the vote (2,613) and Pesach Osina is a close second with 35.08% of the vote (2,406). In third is Manny Silva with 10.11% of the vote (694). As ranked choice voting goes into rounds, the remaining six candidates will be eliminated early on. They include Latoya Benjamin (with 4.95% of the vote or 340 votes), Sherwyn James (with 4.39% of the vote or 302 votes), Shawn Rux (with 2.74% of the vote or 188 votes), Nancy Martinez (with 2.10% of the vote or 144 votes), Latanya Collins (with 1.38% or 95 votes) and Nicole Lee (with .92% or 63 votes). There were also 19 write-in votes. With absentee and military ballots still to be counted, the
official vote counts are not yet set. Due to this, the rounds for ranked choice voting will not begin until March. According to Gloria Pazmino of NY1, this process is not expected to begin until March 10. When rounds begin, as candidates are eliminated, those who voted for those eliminated candidates and ranked their candidates on their ballot will have their next choices counted. This process repeats until one candidate passes the 50% threshold to win. As we go to press, with her lead, Brooks-Powers is confident that she will come out victorious. She released a statement saying, “I am truly humbled by the support we have received, and we’re confident that once every vote has been counted, I will be the next Councilwoman. I want to thank all those who voted today and participated in our democracy, and I want to thank all of my supporters who made this possible. I am a daughter of Southeast Queens, and the momentum and support for my candidacy has been so empowering. While there was substantial confusion about Ranked Choice Voting, these early results are promising, and I look forward to all of the votes being counted." In a statement, Osina said, "We await the final results of this newly implemented electoral process as the ranked choice votes on every ballot are tabulated and certified by the New York City Board of Elections." Whoever is declared winner will serve out the rest of what would have been Donovan Richards’ term that ends in December 2021. Due to this, the winner will be up to another challenge in the primary in June and again in the general election in November.

Parade Update Yes, the Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day Parade is still officially cancelled, but organizer Mike Benn recently provided us with some info on how the day will be celebrated. A TV special on the parade will air during a two-hour time slot on Queens Public Television on what would have been parade day, Saturday, March 6. A few weeks ago, The Rockaway Times broke the news that the parade would be cancelled as the city has cancelled all parade permits due to Covid-19. However, there will in past highlights on TV. “In compliance with this and keeping the safety of our community and marchers foremost, we will be running a special history of the parade with highlights of previous parades showing the timeline on the day of the parade—Mass, breakfast, the parade and awards ceremony,” Benn said. Benn says to log in or tune into channel 34/35 QPTV, at www.qptv.org or the official
parade website www.queenscountyparade.org on parade day to catch the special. In addition to the parade being cancelled, all official parade fundraising events have been cancelled, including Hearts and Shamrocks and the Antun’s Installation. But fundraising has begun to make next year’s parade better than ever. “We are a 501c3 not for profit and all donations to the parade are tax deductible under IRC code 170. Please make a check payable to Parade Committee and mail to Parade Committee c/o Michael Benn, 181 Beach 112th Street, Rockaway NY 11694 or Queens County Parade, PO Box 82, Rockaway Beach, NY 11693,” Benn said. While the parade committee has cancelled the official parade, there are rumblings of some groups organizing an unofficial small-scale alternative. We will provide details in the coming week as we find out more.

Officials Announce JFK Women of Distinction Airport Lease Extension Sought Congressman Gregory W. Meeks, Governor Andrew Cuomo, Mayor Bill de Blasio, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards and the New York Port Authority announced a lease extension for the Port Authority at JFK Airport. The extension will enable the Port Authority to restructure private-public partnership deals and preserve private investments that further JFK Airport’s redevelopment, a project that’s key to driving our region’s economic recovery. “In addition to fighting COVID-19 and addressing our health care challenges, it is critical that policymakers focus on ensuring our economic recovery is both robust and equitable. In New York, support for the Port Authority and its ongoing redevelopment projects, including at JFK Airport, will be key to a more even economic revital-
ization after the pandemic,” Meeks said. In a statement Meeks said as Co-chair of the Community Advisory Council, he has been working with Borough President Richards to see that each and every priority from before COVID-19 carries through long after the pandemic. The JFK Redevelopment Program is one step closer to heeding the community’s call for robust workforce development programs, business development opportunities, educational programs and environmental sustainability commitments for the neighborhoods surrounding JFK. The project will draw more than $10 billion of private investment, creating 20,000 direct and indirect jobs, billions of dollars in MWBE and local contracting opportunities, and other extensive community benefits.
Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato announced that she is seeking nominations for the 2021 Women of Distinction Awards to recognize and honor local women who are making a difference in the community and the lives of others in spite of the unprecedented challenges facing the state and nation. Awards will be given for work in various fields, including health care, business, volunteer work, education and military service. Winners will be honored at an awards ceremony on Friday, March 26 at 6 p.m. over Zoom. “This last year has been challenging. However, countless women have stepped up to meet the needs of our community in really meaningful ways,” Pheffer Amato said. “In honor of Women’s History Month, I’m hosting my annual Women of Distinction
Awards to highlight those who inspire others and are a positive force for change. We can never show enough thanks to these Women of Distinction, but to honor them with a special award ceremony is one step to show our gratitude.” The Women of Distinction Event, held annually since 2018, was canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nomination forms can be requested by mailing amatos@nyassembly.gov or by calling 718-945-9550. AssemblywomanPheffer Amato requests that nominations for the 2021 Women of Distinction Awards can be submitted by March 12, and returned by email to amatos@nyassembly. gov, mailed to her district office at 95-16 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, Rockaway Beach, NY 11693, or by fax at 718-945-9549.

Rockaway Gets the Hollywood Treatment By Katie McFadden
Rockaway got the Hollywood treatment this week as some big stars came to town to film a new series for Hulu. Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez were spotted shooting scenes earlier in the week at Waterview Car Care and on Beach 116th Street for an upcoming show called “Only Murders in the Building.” Rockaway was starstruck as Martin, Short and Gomez were spotted filming at Waterview gas station on Beach 112th and Beach Channel Drive on Monday, February 22. For several hours, even through the rain and snow, filming commenced. They all returned on Tuesday to film on the beach block of Beach 116th Street. The block was transformed into Bayport for the day with a sign indicating the town name and another covering the NYC Parks sign for the Flight 587 memorial with a more standard “Memorial Park for the Enjoyment of Islip Town Residents” sign. The former Lola Star store was also transformed into a tattoo and surf shop for the set. Access to the block and parking were disrupted to make room for various vehicles. Curious locals stopped by in hopes of getting a glimpse of the stars and Gomez showed some love to her young fans by stopping for photos. (Like Gia Aquilano pictured here.) In a synopsis of the show, the Hulu website says, “The untitled comedy surrounds three strangers who share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one. When a murder occurs in their NYC apartment building, they are forced to work together to figure out what happened.” The 10-episode series is set to drop later this year on Hulu. Last week, the cast was also spotted filming in parts of Manhattan. Parking signs for the filming have called this production “The Raven” for Disney. In addition to Hulu, internationally, it will also be available on the Star hub of Disney+ once it is released. To advertise in The Rockaway Times call 718-634-3030 · ads@RockawayTimes.com

***** We'd say congratulations, but there's no winner yet. Selvena Brooks-Powers holds the lead in the City Council District 31 race with Pesach Osina closely trailing behind, but since nobody got 50% of the vote, ranked choice voting will come into play and rounds will begin in March. ***** According to the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League, the one and only meeting for the 2021 season is set for Wednesday, March 10 at 7 p.m. The place is yet to be determined but keep the date in mind and check out RBVL.com regularly. The National Park Service, which runs Riis Park, home of the RBVL, tells us nothing has been set yet as far as restrictions, etc. ***** Some people noticed the Connolly’s sign is no longer up
on the building that is for sale. That got some wondering what was going on. We checked with the sales broker who says the place is still for sale and the signs were removed because of heavy snow and ice. There’s been no word if the iconic, much-loved bar will open this summer. ***** We tweeted to all twelve thousand or so mayoral candidates asking if they’d ever been to Rockaway. Kathryn Garcia was the first and so far only! candidate to respond (with a big yes). She also is the first one to make a candidate stop here. The former Sanitation Commissioner is working! ***** You pull into a gas station looking for regular and all of a sudden you see Steve Martin and Martin Short. The two actor/comedians/entertainers were filming Only Murders in the Building, an upcoming comedy television series for Hulu, at the gas station on Beach 112th and Beach Channel Drive on Monday. Gomez was there as well and stopped to take photos with young fans. ***** Congrats to Ian James Geraghty, a senior at Lawrence Woodmere Academy, for being named by News 12 as a top Student-Athlete. Ian is the son, of Jim Geraghty, an FDNY firefighter who died in 2015. His proud grandparents, Jim and Jeanette Geraghty, still live in Rockaway. Oh, and happy birthday, Ian! (February 24). ***** Tolls on the Cross Bay and Marine Parkway Gil Hodges Memorial bridges will rise from $2.29 to $2.45 for E-Zpass users and from $4.75 to $5.09 for non-tag holders. The Cross Bay Bridge toll remains fully rebated for Rockaway and Broad Channel residents properly using their NYCSC E-Zpass. ***** Don’t miss out. If you’ve got a photo or two that are great and really represent the best that is Rockaway, please enter The Rockaway Times Photo Contest. See Page 18 for more info.
***** Things are getting there. Not that Rockaway has one, but New York City is allowing 25% capacity at movie theaters beginning March 5. Restaurants will also be allowed to open to 35% capacity for indoor dining this Friday. These decisions, like most things these days, have people on both sides and others somewhere in the middle. ***** The mayor was in Far Rockaway on Monday touting hundreds of new units of affordable housing being completed there. He also was promoting an agreement with the Port Authority that is expected to bring 20,000 jobs to JFK over the next few years. The plan is to support to working with minority and women-owned businesses and hire from the surrounding neighborhoods in Southeast Queens. With all the housing coming to Far Rockaway, we hope these jobs really do become available for its residents.

Mayoral Hopeful Kathryn Garcia Pays Rockaway a Visit By Katie McFadden
There are at least 22 candidates currently running for New York City Mayor this year but only one candidate, that we know of, has visited the peninsula since launching her campaign. “I think Rockaway is a secret jewel,” Kathryn Garcia told The Rockaway Times during her visit on Monday, February 22. After The Rockaway Times put out a call to candidates on Twitter, asking if they’d ever been to Rockaway or had plans to come, Garcia was not only the only one to respond—she did us one better. She came to Rockaway to chat about her run for mayor and plans for development and coastal resiliency. Garcia, the former Commissioner for the NYC Department of Sanitation and chief operating officer for the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, arranged to meet The Rockaway Times at Arverne by the Sea coffee shop Locals Collective, for a quick stop on
her busy schedule in Rockaway. However, it was far from her first time in town. “I spent most of my life going to Riis and in high school I would go to the Jordache house. And obviously when I was working for DEP and Sanitation, I was down here. I’ve also done the St. Patrick’s Day parade in the Rockaways, which is great ‘til you make the turn towards the beach and the wind hits you,” she said. Garcia says she’s ready to take

on the city’s top job as mayor. “I love this city, from the beaches of Rockaway to hanging out in the Bronx at the Botanical Gardens. It is really an incredibly exciting place and it’s hurting right now. I know I have the skillset to bring it back so that our economy reopens, there is opportunity for people in this city and we get to have a little fun again,” she said. Among her first priorities would be “to get Covid recovery right,” she said. “We need to get the vaccine distributed much more broadly, particularly for people who are elderly or have trouble getting to a vaccine site.” This would also include helping the economy rebound. “We got to get the economy open. Nothing is affordable if you don’t have a job. We need to be supporting our small businesses and restaurants. You can’t do that if you’re not delivering fundamental city services well. People have to feel safe in their communities, we gotta get snow plowed, garbage picked up and kids back in schools. We need to be thinking of economic mobility and what investments we should be making in our infrastructure and addressing climate change.” She hopes to introduce electric school buses to the system. “We need to electrify our school buses and ensure we’re protective our youngest lives,” she said. “Buses use very dirty diesel, and you have little kids whose brains get impacted by diesel fuels riding them,” she said. Garcia also hopes to expand green space citywide. “You’re blessed with the beach
here and the more tree cover you have, the cooler it is and the cleaner the air is, and I foresee a city where we expand the amount of green space we have,” she said. On the subject of public safety and the NYPD, Garcia says, “NYPD needs to be reformed but we need to maintain our patrol strength. I believe that the police department can rebuild trust in communities it serves and that will take training and management. We have to hold our officers accountable when they violate the law but celebrate those who do the right thing. I want to increase the age group of new recruits to 25 and have them live within city limits. I think that would be an important step.” On Rockaway specifically, if elected, Garcia says she would make sure the peninsula is recognized when it comes to coastal resiliency. “I know how important the coastline is in the City of New York. It’s over 500 miles long and right now, we’re not ensuring that there’s equitable distribution of those resources. We’re primarily focusing on Lower Manhattan and we need to have plan for communities on the water,” she said. “We want to make sure we’re using natural systems so we get the drainage we need and we have the sewer infrastructure out there that we need so we’re protected.” Garcia also addressed some other issues facing the peninsula. “How do you support the small business community in Rockaway?” she said, while doing so herself, drinking a coffee from Locals, before heading off to lunch with Queens Borough President Donovan Richards at Batesy’s. “I’m optimistic the summer season is going to be very robust and transportation and being able to easily move on and off the peninsula is important and we need to make sure we’re investing in that,” she said. For Rockaway, Garcia sees a bright future. “I’m very optimistic for Rockaway,” she said. “I know it’s been a long, tough year but I feel the corner turning out here.

Topping Off at Beach 21st Street Construction of a Beach 21st Street affordable housing project is well underway. On Monday, February 22, Mayor Bill de Blasio came to town to celebrate the topping off of the building with other agencies, leaders and partners. Mayor Bill de Blasio joined the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), New York City Housing Development Corporation, New York City Department of Transportation (DOT), New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC), Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, The Community Builders, Inc., and community leaders for the topping off ceremony at 1047 Beach 21st Street on Monday. The structure is starting to take shape at the previously underused City-owned lot. The new development will provide 224 units of mixed-income 100% affordable housing, serving a wide range of New Yorkers earning extremely low- to moderate-incomes. Ten percent of the units will be set aside for formerly homeless households. The development will include approximately 7,000 square feet of community facility space, which is anticipated to include a daycare center, and approximately 21,000 square feet of retail space adjacent to a planned DOT pedestrian plaza. This transformational project, which broke ground earlier last year, will be delivered by The Community Builders, Inc. (TCB), a leading non-profit developer of affordable and mixed-income housing. The project is expected to create over 59 permanent jobs and over 589 construction jobs. TCB has committed to 35% M/WBE participation, and participation in the City’s HireNYC initiative, with expected construction completion in 2022. “The Rockaways are the embodiment of New York City’s strength and resiliency. This neighborhood deserves affordable housing, accessible streets, and community space, and I’m proud to work with partners across government to deliv-
er it,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “A recovery for all of us means making this city more affordable than ever, and investing in communities that have been hard hit by this crisis.” “Since the Far Rockaway rezoning in 2017, we’ve made tremendous progress on our affordable housing efforts, one of the goals of the Downtown Far Rockaway Roadmap for Action. Far Rockaway was hit hard by the pandemic, which is why the construction progress of this new development will be invaluable to the community and many New York City families,” NYCEDC President and CEO James Patchett added. “Today’s ceremony is an important milestone in the effort to expand housing and economic opportunities in Queens and across New York City,” said Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. “The progress that has been made on this important project at Beach 21st Street shows we are going in the right direction toward creating new housing in our neighborhoods and in promoting economic and community development. Let us continue to build on this momentum as we make our City an even better place to live and raise a family.”
“Rockaway Development & Revitalization Corporation is pleased with the progress of the Beach 21st Street development project and excited to be engaged by The Community Builders and Mega Contracting Group in helping them with their local workforce recruitment, commercial retail space attraction and community engagement efforts,” said Kevin W. Alexander, President & CEO of Rockaway Development & Revitalization Corporation. “We are equally excited for our residents, area workers and local businesses who will directly benefit from the opportunities that Beach 21st Development project provides and will continue to bring to Downtown Far Rockaway for years to come. I cannot emphasize enough our ongoing gratitude to Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, the City Council, Mayor DeBlasio and a host of City agencies – for being so supportive of the Downtown Far Rockaway Redevelopment Project.” In September 2017, the City Council approved the de Blasio Administration’s plan to rezone Downtown Far Rockaway, which helped to bring $288 million of investment to the area. The City’s comprehensive plan for Downtown Far Rockaway includes efforts from a range of City agencies, and investments in infrastructure, parks, community facilities, housing resources, and small-business support. Highlights of the City’s Far Rockaway investments include: Building a new public open space on the site of a vacant Department of Sanitation site at Brunswick and Nameoke. Construction of a new Downtown Far Rockaway Library.
Upgrading sewer infrastructure, expanding sidewalks, and creating new public plazas, including the new plaza adjacent to this site on Beach 21st Street. Providing free legal services for Rockaway residents facing unlawful evictions and tenant harassment. Supporting existing businesses through free legal services and increasing access to other small business resources. Sourcing grants for cultural organizations and increased arts programming. Installing real-time bus arrival displays at key bus stops. The Downtown Far Rockaway Roadmap for Action was developed based on the vision of the Downtown Far Rockaway Working Group — a team of local stakeholders convened by Queens Borough President Donovan Richards in 2015 — to develop a set of goals and recommendations to support the revitalization of the neighborhood. The Downtown Far Rockaway Working Group received input from hundreds of community members and delivered their recommendations to Mayor de Blasio in February 2016, asking that the City activate long-vacant sites, increase access to housing and retail opportunities in the neighborhood, and help the area once again realize its potential as the commercial hub of the peninsula. This week, the Rockaway Mermaid Brigade begins the Poseidon’s Proprietor’s Raffle, where one lucky Rockaway business supporter will win a $500 cash prize by supporting a local business. The businesses who have supported the Poseidon's Parade in years past have been given raffle tickets that they can give to their customers how they see fit. Additionally, each week, the Mermaid Brigade will provide reviews of some of the businesses that have supported the parade in the past. This week will feature guest writer Casey Brouder, aka Kay-C Bro, aka Queen Mermaid Tyrant, who highlights three small businesses headed by three powerful Rockaway women! The oft-benevolent dictator of the art brigade, makes this week’s review all about the ladies. And let’s face it, this town is, and always has been a place where the women run the show! Casey: In this week’s article, we would like to promote three businesses that have greatly supported Poseidon’s Parade, not only by donating fiscally, but also for donating their time and talents to multiple events in the past. These three proprietors also happen to be strong independent businesswomen. These beautiful sirens share the girl power vibes that Poseidon’s Parade has always tried to encourage and instill in the young mermaids of tomorrow. Rekindling Wellness is a longtime supporter of the Poseidon’s Parade fundraising efforts and has a knack for keeping the mer-
maids of Rockaway feeling beautiful and relaxed. Gina Auciello is the esthetician, massage therapist, and eyebrow specialist to the “sea stars.” Growing up in Ozone park and attending Stella Maris High School, Gina is no stranger to the Rockaway vibes. She is extremely professional and is always keeping up with the latest trends of the beauty world. Her services range from deep cleaning facials, wax services, lash lifts and tints, to prenatal massage. The prices vary between services and packages are available. My personal favorite service is a mini facial with an eyebrow shaping and tint. Whether I am planning to dress up as Ariel, a puffer fish or Ursula, Gina can help me obtain the eyebrows I am looking for. She caters to my skin in the change of season, and recommends all natural products to use. She just gives me a chance to feel pampered. ach experience is very intimate and individualized. Vaccine Tips Dear Editor: This is for all those trying to get vaccinated against Coronavirus. Try calling (877) 8294692, the NYC Vaccine Reservation Call Center, in the early afternoon, after 2 p.m. and again after 5 pm. I tried to get an appointment for the vaccine for a week or two. I would go online at the “vaccine finder.nyc.gov” and try throughout the day, but get frustrated by 3 p.m. and give up for the day. On February 10, I went online around noon and first tried Beach Channel Ed. Campus, at Beach 100th Street and elsewhere. I spent the next 15 or 20 minutes trying to fine an appointment. I even tried to find an appointment on Staten Island. Around 5:30 p.m., someone I know told me he got an appointment at Beach Channel for the next day, February 11. He had tried around 1:30 p.m.. I immediately went online, but by that time there were no appointments at Beach Channel. I did get an appointment in Staten Island for the next day. It is possible that we got that appointment because people had cancelled because of the bad weather we got the night of 10th. I have another friend who has been trying to get an appointment for weeks, with no success. He was calling at midnight, he was calling first thing in the morning and the early afternoon. I suggested to him to try after 5 p.m. A couple of days later he got an appointment at Citi Field. He found calling the Vaccine Reservation Call Center easier to use since they found an opening for you. On the website you have to hunt a bit. PS: When you get your first

Dear Editor: Would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the entire Covid vaccine staff at Beach Channel High School. I went for two Moderna vaccines—January 16, and February 20, and from the moment I got dropped off to the time I left, I was treated by compassionate and dedicated workers. Everything was so well organized. I am proud to live in a city where people truly care for one another. I also hope that more people get vaccinated so we can eradicate this virulent virus. Thank you again to these caring and incredible human beings. Martha Rossi
“Newcomer” Praise Dear Editor: One more letter about Rogoff's! Unlike many other recent nostalgic letters about Rogoff's, my relationship with this store "only" goes back about 20 years. That is when I moved here from my Brooklyn, where we had raised our family, with my husband, Kevin O'Mealy, who grew up here. I immediately took a liking to the store that reminded me of the old 5&10 on Flatbush Ave. near Kings Highway, where my sisters and I spent much of our childhoods. At Rogoff's in Rockaway, I found a store owned by a "new" owner, Peter, where I could chat with the people who worked there, including the neighborhood woman whose name I never got, but who watched over the store and made everyone feel at home. Like my old 5&10, at Rogoff's I could buy stationery, toys, professional art supplies, wrapping paper and cards, things for every holiday, and more. I shopped there every week until it closed. Peter did
not make drastic changes to the store, but kept its name and its old-fashioned Rockaway vibe, and was committed to his customers and the neighborhood. He was not the original owner, but owned the store for over 20 years (I know, a "newcomer" in Rockaway, like me!), and kept it running through thick and thin, even as disasters struck and people's shopping habits changed. Let's remember Peter, a long-time merchant, along with the original founders! Jane Canner
Moratorium Nightmare Dear Editor: I doubt that I am the first one to write a letter to the media in regards to homeowners/ landlords who have suffered with the NYS Moratorium Eviction Prevention Act. I along with many have felt frightened and feel that the true victims have been those that are homeowners/ landlords. I have a tenant who has continued to terrorize my family and I and continues not to pay rent and has even had weapons confiscated by the NYPD but with no avail as to moving out. I find it absurd that one can just sign the, “Tenant’s Declaration of Hardship During the COVID-19 Pandemic” and has become untouchable. He continues to make statements such as, “you can’t do anything to me”, “I’m not paying you a penny,” “I still have my guns,” “the police can’t search” and screaming through the basement at all hours without warning. I understand that the moratorium was originally meant in good faith to protect those that had truly lost their jobs and were at risk of being evicted. However, it has now been abused and I am one of many that are suffering. He is even committing car insurance fraud by having his driver’s license to a PO Box in Mineola and his car registration to a Motel upstate and living in my basement. I had to hire an investigator and found out he is a con artist. I retired after
working for the city for 40 years and have a physically disabled wife and tremble everyday not knowing if our lives are at risk. The harassment continues and nothing can be done. Through the hired investigator it has been learned that he has a state lien on him since 2004 and has not paid the monies to the plaintiff. In September 2020, he broke the hot water heater and in November 2020, he broke the heating system which has caught us $10,000 in total repairs. He has even threatened me with guns and had the plumber leave and unable to complete the work. He has damaged my home by being a hoarder and leaving vermin to come into our home. The hands of many homeowners are tied with no protection provided to us. I ask that you continue to use your segments to announce the plights of homeowners/ landlords as a voice for those whose hands are tied. If you could please tell my story as I believe it is one of many. I have a ring doorbell video of the police coming to my house confiscating weapons from his residence and the police saying, “we can only give him a C Summons” even though they were unlicensed and unregistered in NYC & NYS. It is very disturbing to see that what a law was originally intended to protect has now been abused by many. I fear that at night he will break down the door connecting the house to the basement and commit a horrifying act to my family in a defenseless manner. He has said that he will commit this act which leaves me with sleeping on the first floor with three hours of sleep. Please help to keep what feels like the voiceless as heard. Jim Latopolski

PHOTO CONTEST OPEN! WIN $500 AND BRAGGING RIGHTS Just in case you missed last week’s news, we’re running this again: Say Cheese, Louise –it’s that time again – so hit us with your best shots (again)! The Sixth Annual Rockaway Times Photo Contest is now underway. There’s no doubt, Rockaway’s Got Talent and we like to put the spotlight on peninsula shutterbugs. As we’ve done in years past, The Top 30 photos selected are made poster-size and put on display on the boardwalk. And some honorable mentions get placed at the ferry dock. The winning photographer wins a $500 Grand Prize and everlasting bragging rights. You don’t have to be a professional, you just have to take a great photo! Ok, now the IMPORTANT STUFF: Deadline: Friday, April 16.
This year we’re changing things up a little. There will be no categories. You can submit a photo of your adorable pet, but it will compete against sunsets, parades, wildlife, surfers, you name it. You are allowed to submit up to FOUR (4) photos. They must be high resolution (some of those phone photos just don’t cut it) and the photos must be of Rockaway or Broad Channel or on the ferry or from the ferry. This is The Rockaway Times Photo Contest and we’re sure your vacation photos are great but we’re sticking to a local theme. You must submit your name (or the name of the photographer) and, please know that The Rockaway Times may use any of the photos as we see fit (in the paper, and/or Summer Guide, Facebook, etc). We
will give photo credit, but we will have full rights to the photo. And please, only send photos you have rights to or permission to use. Do not send someone else’s photo and put your name on it, we will find out! Important : Send to the CORRECT email address. Submit your top photos to Contest@Rockawaytimes.com We will still print our Local Color feature each week but that’s a separate email and contest photos sent there cannot be considered. Contest tip: We know we’ll get lots and lots of beautiful sunsets and sunrises but that means it’ll be tough for your photo to really stand out. Maybe your picture of kids on the beach or a great boardwalk scene or something that
screams “That’s Rockaway!” will be the one that captures the judges’ eyes. And remember only your top 4 ! We’re thrilled to have our co-sponsors back for this year’s contest. The Jamaica Bay– Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) NYC-Ferry, and NYC Parks help make this one of the summer’s great events. So go snap away, Rockaway. The Photo Contest is now open!
Let’s take back our city. One vaccination at a time.

Naturopathic Health THE ORIGINAL HEALTH CARE People of ancient times, it is said, as well as those of highly diverse cultures, live(d) to 120 and 140 years of age with no skills from the western style physicians. In the holistic world of health remedies, the intention is always to attempt to cure the illness. The body has a remarkable ability to repair itself if given the required nutrients. MDs have their place in emergency or trauma situations. It's my belief that most of the conditions that people go to their MD’s for would have been better treated via holistic methods. The body has the ability to fix itself and wants to fix itself, that is where the naturopaths come in. As a Naturopath, I have a clear understanding of the importance of the 90 essential

nutrients and sixty essential minerals as well as how they affect the body. It’s not only good to know what you eat that harms you but also what you don’t eat. With the help of a naturopath, you can prevent and reverse 412 diseases with vitamins, minerals, trace minerals and herbs. If you are willing to take personal responsibility for maintaining and enriching your physical body then you can enjoy a safer and healthier life. No one can do it for you, start today! I am very proud to be amongst the great doctors of old. Randi Shannon, Doctor of Naturopathy Thebodycan.com IG/FB/Twitter/YouTube

Queens CB Applications Set Record It’s a new record. Queens Borough President Donovan Richards announced his office received 931 applications from a diverse group of civic-minded individuals who seek appointment to one of the borough’s 14 community boards this year. This sets a Queens borough record and represents a huge 56.5 percent increase from the 595 applications the Queens Borough President’s Office received last year. The jump in applications is attributed to Borough President Richards’ efforts to streamline the application process and engage in outreach on college campuses and elsewhere aimed at creating a more diverse applicant pool. “Democracy works best when it hears the voices of all the people it serves,” Borough President Richards said “Having a community board membership that truly reflects the diversity in Queens will help ensure our City government hears what our borough’s residents have to say.”
Borough President Richards began receiving applications in mid-January for two-year terms of community board service which will begin on April 1, 2021. The application process became simplified this year when it was digitized, with all applications submitted via an easily fillable online form. In previous years, applications had to be prepared on paper and be notarized before they were turned in. This year’s 931 applicants include 698 people who are not currently members of a community board. Last year the Queens Borough President’s Office received applications from only 252 such individuals. All Queens community board members are appointed by the Queens Borough President, pursuant to the City Charter, with half of the appointees nominated by the City Council members representing their respective Community Districts. Each board has up to 50 unsalaried members who serve two-year terms.
Beautiful Marguerite ‘Marge’ Moran passed away peacefully this week with all of her children by her side. Marge was just shy of her 89th birthday and lived in Breezy for several years with her caring daughter and namesake Marguerite and her loving family, Dorothy, Dylan, Matt and little Marguerite. Raised in foster care from a young age, Marge always credited her faith, positive attitude, willingness to see the good in others and sense of humor as the attributes that helped her in those early years and throughout her life. In 1950, she graduated from John Adams High School in Queens and worked as an administrative assistant upon graduation. In 1956, she met Joseph A. Moran, the son of Joseph and Margaret Moran. They were married for 54 years until Joe’s death in 2011. The family were founding partners of the Circle Line. While Joe ran the family business, Marge raised five wonderful children, Joseph, Danny, Marguerite, Billy and Bobby. Their house was a happy one overseen by a woman who loved life and all that it had to offer. They spent their summers at the Surf Club on West Court in the family cabana - a ‘double’ on the end. Marge knew how to throw a good party and there were many! After raising her family, Marge continued her education and earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees at St. John’s University in Queens. Thereafter, she taught English for many years at St. John’s, sharing her wisdom and life’s lessons with many students and faculty. Marge loved walking the beach, sunsets on the Bayside, pinot grigio with her girls and holidays with her family. Marge lovingly welcomed her daughters-in-law, Megan, MaryJane, and Mary into the family fold and created a special bond with each. She will be sorely missed by her grandchildren Billy (Michelle), Marissa, Michele, Paul, Daniel, Joseph, Michael, Timothy, Matthew, Marguerite, Alexandria and Emma who will cherish their memories of Easters in Naples, Christmases at the Club, graduation trips overseas and simple Sunday dinners - all hosted by her generous spirit. Her wake will be held in Clavins, in Bay Ridge and the funeral will be held on Saturday, February 27th at 9:30 am at Our Lady of Angels, BayRidge, Marge’s parish for over 40 years.

SCHEDULE SOLITUDE Solitude is the act of being alone or isolated in a good frame of mind. Who wants to be alone? Well, I want to share that it is very good to schedule some solitude time - I think it is essential to health and well-being. It is a time not to do anything at all, just kind of stare out wherever you are: in your home, on the beach, anywhere that is quiet and peaceful. The space around you, the environment around you
should probably be clean and pleasing to the eye - giving off a positive vibration. . . a small circle of peace. Then, feel free! Imagine yourself somewhere that feels freeing. As William Wordsworth wrote in a poem: “I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o’er vale’s and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the

breeze. . . . For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mode, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.” Schedule some time - a half hour maybe - and imagine yourself free or like something that is free - a cloud - as in the poem - gave him the space to re-experience a beautiful sight in nature in his mind’s eye. If you need to get to a peaceful state, that’s a good practice: floating like a cloud or flying like a bird. Did you ever see a bird hover when there is a strong wind? Whatever you can imagine to get yourself to some calmness. Maybe you are peaceful already, so then give your mind space to just be. No trying anything. Just be. If you’re in nature, you may just be mindful of specifics like the sand or the water rippling. Give your mind space. Your thoughts will wander; if they have a lot of space - meaning if your mind is free, not constricted by a
The Rockaway Times problem - different things will arise. You can see all of your thoughts floating on the cloud or riding a wave or sliding down a snowy mountain. Solitude is an opportunity for calm reflection, arising of creative ideas and connection to the inner light self. And relief of stress. No matter who you are, what your tools and practices are like yoga, meditation, exercise, etc., these recent times take a toll. Whatever we can do to relieve tension will benefit all of the systems in the body and give the mind a rest. We are busy, of course, but ever notice that if you have to do something no matter how busy you are you always get it done? If we see this as something we have to do because it will benefit our well-being, we can make time for it. Schedule some solitude time! May you be happy. May you be free. May you be compassionate. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Wrestle Talk WRESTLING NEWS
By Eric Jayden
Hello, everybody I hope you had a great week. Let's dive into some wrestling news: The Big Story of the Week comes from the WWE. They will partner with the A&E Channel to produce new wrestling related content starting April 2021. Their first series will be on biographies focusing on WWE Hall of Famers. Names already mentioned for the biographies are Roddy Piper, The Ultimate Warrior, Bret Hart, Booker T and Steve Austin. The WWE will also produce a second series called WWE's Most Wanted Treasures, which will focus on lost WWE Memorabilia. As stated on wwe. com, "WWE's Most Wanted Treasures takes viewers on a journey to find some of the WWE's most iconic lost
memorabilia." WWE Superstars Stephanie McMahon and Paul "Triple H" Levesque will lead a team of collectors, WWE Superstars and Legends as they investigate, negotiate, bid and travel across the country to hunt down and reclaim some of the most exclusive WWE collectibles. All Elite Wrestling Superstar Chris Jericho has recently filed to trademark one of his Ring Names that he used during his time in Mexico and Japan which is "Lionheart" translated in Spanish, "Corazon de Leon." This was done by Chris Jericho to protect his intellectual property. WWE Superstar Samoa Joe has recently reported that he will be returning back to inring performance once he is medically cleared by the WWE Medical Staff. Samoa Joe has not been seen on
WWE television since February 2020 after suffering two concussions in the same month. All Elite Wrestling Superstar Anna Jay and Brooke Havok have both suffered injuries that will take both superstars out for several months. These injuries are both very unfortunate since both women have been given opportunities to prove themselves to be moved up to the AEW main roster. We here at Wrestle Talk wish both of them a speedy recovery. The injuries unfortunately keep on coming this time from WWE Superstar Jey Uso who injured his left toe during the WWE pay-perview Elimination Chamber. We also like to wish Jey Uso a speedy recovery. The Question of the Week
comes from Jimmy A. from Arverne and he said, "I am a big Adam Cole fan and I was wondering why he has not been moved up to the WWE main roster?" Well, Jimmy that is an excellent question, but I'll answer it this way: Although I feel that the WWE can benefit by moving Adam Cole to the main roster, at this time I don't see any storyline for him there. If the WWE can come up with a big storyline for Adam Cole, then by all means move him up to the main roster but for now he's better off staying with the WWE's NXT brand. If you have any questions, please send them to eavil183@yahoo.com. Follow me on Twitter @followthebadguy and on Facebook @ericjayden. Have a great week!
