Local Takes a Chance on Wheel of Fortune By Katie McFadden Come on big money! Come on big money! As the wheel spins…. It was lights, camera and action on Wheel of Fortune as Rockaway Beach resident Ed Laczynski made a run for the money. While he’s sworn to secrecy about the outcome, fans of the show will get to see if Laczynski won any of the big prizes during the episode at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, February 28. Laczynski says he applied to every television show imaginable about 10 years ago, but nothing much ever came from it. Still on the e-mail list from applying way back, Laczynski received an email from Wheel of Fortune over the summer, encouraging him to apply again with a video submission. “My wife and I walked down to the boardwalk and did this one minute video of me talking about myself. It was super windy on the boardwalk and I have little to no editing skills. I was going to redo it, but I said, let me just submit it and whatever happens, happens,” Laczynski said. Despite the poor quality, Laczynski received an

email inviting him to an audition in Downtown Brooklyn. Laczynski went for the audition and says he was part of one of four or five groups of 50 people that were called. He made it through the audition and a written test and was told he would receive a letter in the mail within two weeks if the producers were interested. Laczynski spent the next two weeks, eagerly checking his mailbox. “Two weeks came and went and I didn’t receive anything. I was a little bummed, but I thought, at least I went for it and made it as far as I could,” Laczynski said. About five days later, his luck changed. “It was the first day I went to the mailbox without thinking the letter would be there. I had abandoned hope. As soon as a I saw the mailbox and saw the Wheel of Fortune seal on the envelope, I knew they weren’t writing just to say hello.” Laczynski was officially a part of the contestant pool. In early December, he received word that filming would be in Culver City, California about a week before Christmas. Laczynski admits he didn’t watch Wheel of Fortune much be-

fore he got the letter, but he started to watch the show religiously and downloaded a Wheel of Fortune game app on his cell phone to prepare. “I became a Wheel of Fortune nerd. I was on Wheel of Fortune app all the time. It was probably

Scholars’ Students Seek Truth Behind Labels

More Surfing Beaches On The Way By Michael Leboff Rockaway’s surf community continues to grow and New York City’s Department of Parks and Recreation is looking to accommodate that growth. Parks is currently working on a plan to create two more surf-only beaches in Rockaway. According to Borough Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski, the plan would be to create two more surf-only beaches at Beach 65th through Beach 67th Streets in Arverne and at Beach 110th to Beach 112th streets in Rockaway Park. Currently there are only two legal spots to surf in Rockaway -- one at Beach 67th Street through Beach 69th Street and the other at Beach

87th Street to Beach 92nd Street. Both of these locations are open year-round, from dawn ‘til dusk. The two proposed sites are currently swim only beaches, meaning if they get approval to become surf spots -- swimming would be prohibited. There is no timetable for the plan but Lewandowski said that they will present the idea before the Community Board for further approval. The newly formed Rockaway Beach Surfers Association has been urging Parks and elected officials to expand available surf spots. Alex Karinsky, president of the association and columnist for The Rockaway Times, called the development “excellent news.”

Scholars’ Academy 9th Grade students Andriana Lamendola and Nasreen Duqmaq are participating in the Urban Barcode Project. The competition increases these students’ exposure to STEM activities and is an extension of the content they are learning in their classes. Their goal for this experiment will be to analyze specific vegetarian brands in order to determine if these so called “meatless” products are truthfully advertised or simply mislabeled. Lamendola and Duqmaq will investigate if companies that specialize in producing “vegetarian meat” dishes are using false advertising of

product contents in order to achieve an authentic meat flavor and increase business. In order to identify if vegetarian food producers mislabel their products, they plan to test various brands, spanning different supermarkets, to test for meat ingredients. Students will be using equipment and instruments at the Harlem DNA Lab, which will allow them to strip the food’s cell membranes and barcode the DNA to identify the true ingredients. All students competing in the Urban Barcode Project will learn valuable scientific skills needed to be college and career ready.

No Stinkin’ Buttons there was a fire? And you had to run out on the street? She says she sleeps with her clothes on and a fully packed suitcase next to her bed just in case. That, to me, is more normal than a man in button down pj’s. I won’t put the no-button rule on women. I’m betting lots of them like buttons and I think a lot of women like to get dressed up. Who am I to say how they should dress when they go nighty-night? But men? Men are men, as a deep thinker once told me, they don’t need no stinkin buttons. I’m sure there are 50 shades of men but when all is said and done, you fall into one of two camps. You’re either Oscar Madison or Felix Unger. And I’m talking Jack Klugman and Tony Randall, the best of the all the Oscars and Felixes. In simple, raw, terms Oscar Madison is a man’s man. He can be trusted. Felix? He’s more likely to be a serial killer. So, that’s it. Next time you see a show with a guy wearing button shirt pajamas, you’re gonna see what I mean. Oh, as for you men over 70 – you get a pass. You guys wore overcoats and fedoras to baseball games. It’s in your DNA. Of course, you’re going to get dressed –– properly attired – for bed. But the rest of you? Don’t be trying to defend the idea of getting dressed for bed. I already have you sized up as a possible serial killer. No amount of discussion is gonna change that.

You know that onesie pajamas are now made for adults. The new craze is really just an offspring of the Snuggie, which was basically a bathrobe worn backwards. With back-to-back winters like we’ve had, I completely get the idea of warmth and comfort. And though they might be nothing more than a fad, I accept them as fun and even useful. Unlike men’s pajamas. See, I’m easily amused and confused. Sometimes people don’t think I’m listening but it’s only because I’m wondering about something dark and disturbing. I mean, every time I see a guy on TV or in a movie wearing pajamas I think it’s kinda weird. Actually, more than weird. It’s deeply troubling. Since I grew out of footie pajamas a few decades back, I’ve never been a pajamas kinda guy and I really don’t see how any normal man could be. I get pajama pants but the idea of putting on a shirt that you have to button is absurd and really marks you as some kind of nut job. There, I said it. If you’re sleeping next to a man with buttons, keep one eye open. You know the shortest list in Rockaway is the Men’s Best Dressed List. Chances are if you’re wearing button down pajamas to bed, you’re better dressed when you’re asleep than when you’re walking around town. Sleeping clothes should be button free. Sweatpants, underwear, gym shorts: all acceptable. Sleeping nude? Well, that’s a column for another day – though a quick aside: A friend of mine says she would never sleep nude. What if

Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder has drafted a bill extending New York City property tax abatements for Hurricane Sandy victims seeing tax increases due to home repairs made as a result of the storm. This legislation would extend the law passed in 2014 that reduced homeowner’s property taxes for fiscal year 2014-2015. “If passed, this new legislation will provide much-needed financial relief to many of our families in southern Queens and Rockaway who continue to be burdened by the huge financial cost of rebuilding,” Goldfeder said The new legislation amends state real property law to allow New York City to provide a partial abatement on homeowner’s annual property tax assessment for home repairs and improvements stemming from damage sustained during Sandy. Under current tax law, home improvements are not subject to state property tax caps intended to protect homeowners from property value increases that can translate into higher taxes. The new legislation would provide tax relief to homeowners meeting the following criteria: NYC Department of Finance (DOF) reduced the assessed value of a homeowner’s property between Fiscal Years 2012-2013 as a result of damage caused by Sandy; DOF then increased the assessed value between Fiscal Years 2014-2015; The property’s assessed value for Fiscal Year 2015 is greater than the assessed value was in 2013. Last year, Goldfeder sponsored similar legislation that provided partial tax abatements for postSandy repairs made by homeowners. However, this law only applied to 2014 and has not been renewed. As a result, many homeowners were shocked to find large increases in their property taxes when they received their Notice of Property Value from the city in January.

Chuck, it’s well past time you applied the pressure. The Army Corp can study while Rome burns or we drown. ***** Those property tax notices you got can be utterly confusing. Thanks to Eric Ulrich for convening a town hall at the VFW in Broad Channel. Your assessed value shouldn’t go up by more than six percent. If it did, it’s possible because the City figured major alterations were done postSandy. It can be argued, says a rep of NYC Finance who was at the town hall, that putting things back the way they were is not an alteration. Might

Page 7 be worth protesting. It can be done by mail. But forms have to be sent in by March 15. ***** Joe Hartigan, best known as the ferry guy, is a pebble in the shoe for most of our politicians. He says he’d like to see a fundraiser for the elected officials. You pay them $100 to ask them a question. The catch? They have to be hooked up to a polygraph machine. ***** Good coffee’s been available at Claudette’s on 116th for a while. Now, Rockaway Beach looks like it’ll have a great new option as Roaster’s on Rockaway Beach Boulevard off Beach 92nd street opens soon. ***** A resident was getting a ticket on Beach 127th Street for not having his or her sidewalk cleared of ice. And what about City owned property? The sidewalks under the Freeway are never shoveled forcing pedestrians and Scholar’s Academy students onto the street. ***** The old Beach Club on Beach 116th with a long stretch of dangerous ice on its sidewalk is owned by the Malachite Group out of Mineola. The same group owns Rockaway Commons, the “Key Food” shopping center, on Beach 88th street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard.

Dear Editor: (Re: Rockaway South article, 2/19) Well, I’m not lucky enough to stay until May and I’m not from Rockaway, but not too far away, just across the bay in Mill Basin, Brooklyn. I just returned from Rincon this morning with my daughter, way too soon. I’m pretty sure we were at the beach house when that front page picture was taken, so I know about the awesome Rockaway gang that is there. I have been going down in February for the last three years and I think the reason I keep returning is because of not just the warmth of the beautiful beaches but the warmth of the Rockaway/ Long Beach crew. It seems everywhere you go the same crew of awesome people are there with you, They definitely like to have their fun and if you end the night in Angry Mikes you probably had too much fun! Thanks to my buddy DJ Mouse and his Rockaway gang for making this old Brooklyn boy feel so much at

Concrete Doubts

Dear Editor, I was walking my dog around the 106th street concession and to my surprise (not really), the concession cement boardwalk on the original concrete stanchions that held the original boardwalk. Not being an engineer, I could see that the board-

walk stanchions were in much better shape than those of the elevated subway, yet those were repaired. I did see that engineers took two core samples from stanchions at Beach 103rd Street. The result was the stanchions were condemned. The boardwalk between 73rd Street and the 86th Street concession was damaged by Sandy, but probably could have been repaired. The problem was that it rested on the stanchions that were condemned. I did have the opportunity to check the 97th and 86th Street concessions, both were built on the old stanchions. When the FDNY began its efforts to recruit New York City Firefighter candidates back in 2011, it sold them on the merits of “the best job in the world has the best benefits in the world.” Now several years later, it appears that the city failed to tell these prospective first responders the truth. Since 2013 the city has hired more than 1,400 new FDNY firefighters, most who don’t have disability benefits. What the city recruitment posters should have read in 2011 was: don’t get hurt in the line of duty or else you and your family will be in trouble! Here’s why: If any probationary (rookie) firefighters’ hired by the FDNY since January 2013 are seriously injured, paralyzed or permanently disabled on the job, the approximate value of their disability protection amounts to only about $27/day. This all began when Governor David Paterson vetoed the New York City firefighter and police Tier II extender bill in June 2009, forcing all future FDNY and NYPD hires into Tier III, which has no real disability benefits. Today virtually every firefighter and police officer in New York State has real disability benefits, except for those in the FDNY and NYPD. It is wholly unacceptable for newly hired city firefighters to face the same dangers as fellow veteran firefighters but only be protected to the sum of $27/day, or less than $190 per week if they’re seriously injured. It’s already a highly dangerous profession and firefighters need to be 100 percent focused on their responsibilities in a fire/emergency situation and not distracted with “what if” concerns about who is going to take care of their family if they’re seriously injured. Having this lingering concern -- especially among firefighters who are married or have children to provide for -- clearly jeopardizes public safety, and simply doesn’t serve taxpayers interests. How can the city demand new hires enter a burning building, or conduct a dangerous rescue or

take the other risks, while denying them the same disability protections? I believe most New Yorkers will stand united with New York City’s Firefighters to declare that it is immoral for the city to ask the young men and women of the FDNY to risk their life and health without a safety net. What’s more, the public is best served when every firefighter is solely focused on their job, because they know that if they are seriously injured in the line of duty, they will be taken care of. The Uniformed Firefighters Association is advocating and fighting for necessary corrective legislation that requires the support of a majority of the New York City Council and passage of legislation via the State Assembly, Senate and signed into law by the governor. What legislation would do is guarantee that each of our city’s firefighters and police officers who risk their lives would have similar disability protections that more senior New York City Firefighters and other first responders across the state are granted. New Yorkers should want and expect a fire department with members that will never have to think twice about if their family be cared for if permanently disabled. New Yorkers should join with firefighters and call upon city and state legislators to take action and correct this serious problem. New York City Firefighters have proven that we will do anything to protect life, but how can we truthfully tell a young firefighter with or without a family that they will be protected, when we know that is a lie. Being a New York City Firefighter is the most dangerous profession in our nation. No other job exposes its employees to so much risk, disability and death in the line of duty. I simply ask all New Yorkers to consider, would you risk your life and health, or that of your son or daughter, for only $27 a day?

While he has never been to California before, he says he and his wife didn’t do much besides the filming, as they had recently had a baby and wanted to get home soon. Laczynski, who teaches English and social studies teacher at Channel View High School, also needed to get back to his other kids for class on Monday morning. Laczynski says the 30-minute episode was an all-day ordeal when it came to filming. “We got picked up from the hotel at 7 a.m. and we didn’t film until almost 4 p.m. I was the only person in the green room asking for more coffee. It was hard to focus,” he said, adding that the long day was due to six episodes being filmed and hosts Pat Sajak and Vanna White had a staff Christmas party that day. Laczynski says he never got to speak to Sajak until his game time. What’s it like to spin the wheel? “I was surprised because it looks way bigger on TV than it is in person, but it was heavy. It weighs more than 2,000 pounds and I had been having problems with my shoulder, so I was a little worried, but it wasn’t bad,” Laczynski said. However, nerves were a challenge in the start of the game. “When the

first puzzle comes on, it’s a toss-up and they give you a signaling device and anyone can buzz in when they figure out the puzzle. For all I knew, it might have been written in Chinese. My brain went to complete jello in the first moments, but I got my composure and started to focus more and had fun with it. It was fun to look up in the crowd and see my wife there,” he said. Laczynski says the show is still a blur at this point. “They said it was going to be the quickest half hour of your life and it was. I barely remember anything about the puzzles, so it’s going to be a bit of a mystery reveal to me when I watch on Friday,” he said. Laczynski says he’s inviting some friends and family over to watch what happens. “We’re going to get some beers and order some pizza and my parents and friends are going to laugh at me,” he joked. His students have been taking polls, trying to guess how much he won, with responses ranging from $0 to $1 million. “I don’t have any regrets. I’m glad I went for it because it proves that when you have a crazy idea, you have to go for it because you never know what can come from it.” See how Laczynski does this Friday at 7:30 p.m. on Channel 7.

Parks Concession Update By Michael Leboff

Earlier this year New York City sent out an RFP looking to contract with vendors to sell “beach equipment” at various sites along Rockaway Beach. The original proposal sought to put 10 vendors along various sites by the boardwalk to sell stuff like umbrellas, sunblock, and Rockaway themed clothing. The decision to send out the RFP was met with backlash from the community who were concerned that the location of some of these concessions would directly compete with local businesses that rely heavily on summer sales. NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver spoke about the RFPs at the Community Board 14 meeting on January 13, where he admitted that the Parks department made a mistake by not seeking community input in the initial offering of the RFP. “Let me first express the fact that we should have reached out to you sooner, we understand your concern,” he explained at the meeting. Mitchell has since claimed that they will rectify the mistake and encourage local businesses to take part in the process. “Community engagement is critical as we continue to create a more resilient future for Rockaway Beach and its local economy,”

Commissioner Silver said. Despite the resistance from local businesses, Parks is still going forward with the process and held an introductory meeting with potential vendors last week. In addition to amending the RFP to encourage more community input, Parks has also released a new timeline for the process. Last Friday, February 20th, Parks invited interested parties to a recommended proposer meeting and site tour. According to a Parks department official, about 15 people showed up to the meeting which was held at one of the proposed concession sites on the boardwalk in front of Rippers. They went over the RFP and held a brief Q&A with those in attendance. They offered the opportunity to take a site tour, but did not receive any requests to do so. One of the changes to the RFP was that Parks will no longer consider the proposed concessions site at Beach 116th Street. Food and beverage companies will not be considered at any of the new concession sites. There was also an addition to the RFP where it states, “Parks encourages the successful proposer to engage in outreach to the community.” Responses to the RFP are due by 3 PM on Friday, March 6. And final interviews, if any, will be held on Monday, March 23.

Hospital Hopes – St. John’s Eyes Peninsula Hospital Property By Michael Leboff

Rockaway’s only indigenous hospital is looking for some financial relief. And, in the process, looking for a cure for what ails Rockaway. St. John’s Episcopal Hospital has filed four applications for funding under the New York State Capital Restructuring Finance Program (CRFP) in order to upgrade and expand its facilities. One aspect of expansion includes taking over the now-defunct Peninsula Hospital. St. John’s has been the only working hospital on the peninsula since April, 2012 when the long-troubled Peninsula Hospital Center closed. PHC was unable to stay solvent after the New York State Health Department shut down its lab after a failed state exam. Since then, claims of fraud and multimillion dollar lawsuits have ensnared the property which is still under the control of a court-ordered trustee. The closing of PHC meant that St. John’s, which is located on Beach 19th Street, would be the only hospital to service the entire peninsula and the roughly 120,000 people who call it home year-round. Urgent care facilities, both existing and proposed, have sprung up to address Rockaway’s health care shortfall. According to the Request for Ap-

plication (RFA) sent out by the New York State Department of Health (DOH) and the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY), a total of $1.2 billion is expected to be available for capital projects to “enhance the quality, financial viability and efficiency of the health care delivery system in New York State by transforming the system into a more rational patient-centered care system that promotes population health and improved well-being for all New Yorkers.” The aim of the CRFP is to provide applicants with capital grants to “support eligible capital projects that are expected to deliver high quality, patient-centered health care services in appropriate settings to people in their communities, and to support the transformation of the health care delivery system from a fee-for-service system to a value-based system.” While expanding to Peninsula is a goal, St. John’s officials say the number one priority of its application is to secure $9.2 million to complete the build out of the hospital’s current Emergency Department. St. John’s is moving to gain support for its efforts. Several elected officials including Senator Joe Addabbo and Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder were recently invited to the hospital for a look at the progress of the build out.

As for the grander plan, St. John’s is also requesting $50 million to repurpose the old PHC site on Beach 51st Street and Beach Channel Drive. If they are granted the funding for this project, the hospital will take over about 100,000 square feet of the building at PHC to establish the St. John’s Medical Village. Currently, the property sits vacant and has had a fire and been the target of vandals. Occasionally, groups express interest in the property (veteran’s services, affordable housing, social services, e.g.) but to date, nothing of significance has transpired. In addition to the request for funding for the Emergency Department and the PHC repurposing, the hospital has applied for $1.7 million to set up a primary care facility across the street from the hospital, $4.3 million for IT upgrades within the hospital as well as putting new computer systems in partnering nursing homes, and $325,000 for a new telemedicine program, also with partnering nursing homes. The hospital officially filed for the funding last week and expects a decision to be made some time in April. According to St. John’s reps, it is not an all-or-nothing application. Some projects may get the green light while the State may deny others. St. John’s is not partnering with any other hos-

pital in this project but St. John’s CEO Richard Brown said they may partner with local ambulatory providers. The plans and application are active even though Brown is a lame duck CEO. As The Rockaway Times reported on February 12, the Board of St. John’s has launched a search for a new CEO. No date has been set for Brown’s actual exit. Meanwhile, the application has the support of Assemblyman Goldfeder, who urged that it was time that the State “stepped up” and assisted the hospital. “Since Peninsula shut down, St. John’s has done amazing work servicing the needs of the community without any infusion of resources,” Goldfeder said. In addition to the support from Goldfeder, the hospital said that the application has the backing of the 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers.

Between the Bridges in Broad Channel By Peter J. Mahon

Who Knew Last Sunday saw the return of BI-N-G-O to Broad Channel’s V.F.W. Post #260 on Shad Creek Road. I’ll be the first to admit that I have always thought that B-I-N-G-O was either the name of a farmer’s dog or a game invented by religious organizations dedicated solely to allowing our senior citizens to legally gamble away their social security earnings by allowing them to purchase a “get out of sin” card at the front door. That being said, the air temperature was a balmy 36 degrees so I decided to stroll up to the hall shortly after 1:00 p.m. to see

how things were working out. The first thing that struck me was that the population of gamers was almost evenly spread between both men and women. The group’s age spread also included the expected senior citizen category but also included both young and middle aged Bingophiles. It had never dawned on me that young people could (or would) play Bingo. I always envisioned an age minimum, you know, a picture of someone’s grandma holding a sign with an arrow pointing to herself stating “You must be this old to play!” Last week in this column I may

have mentioned that the popularity of B-I-N-G-O is based on the fact that it is a social game, where players happily interact with each other with a sense of congenial camaraderie. In hindsight, I may have been a tad off with my “happy-happy” description of the Bingo Hall’s atmosphere. The tables were filled with people with heads bowed, eyes scrupulously examining their Bingo cards, their hands grasping a magic marker to record each called number. By the way, I was schooled by one player who was playing several cards at once that the markers are called “dabbers” by the more experienced players. I guess she was an experienced player as she was armed with a “dabber” in both hands, a “double fisted dabber” if you will. During the game she sounded like an old IBM Selectric Typewriter, “dabbing” her numbers with both hands on all of her cards. The only other sounds in the Hall were the rattle of the turning bingo number cage followed by the caller announcing the next pulled number until someone ultimately threw their hands in the air and yelled “BINGO!” followed by a loud collective groan interspersed with the occasional “Damn it!” Someone would circulate throughout the hall in between games selling raffles and 50/50 tickets to assuage the gambling fe-

I was advised that this person is referred to as a “seller.” Years ago when I worked in law enforcement we referred to them as a “pusher.” With each new game the Bingo Master assumed her position and began calling numbers as fast as she could (the natives grow restless when she dawdles). At one point assistance had to be called in for one player who was attempting to play 40 cards at once and who, unfortunately, was not a “double fisted dabber.” All kidding aside, many thanks to Gail Waldhein, Kathleen Reardon Savino, Eileen Russel and of course the Bingo Master herself, Cookie Daley of the V.F.W.’s Ladies Auxiliary for making this a great day for all who attended! Eagle Scout Seeks Volunteers for Sidewalk Cleanup By Katie McFadden

Breezy Point resident Thomas Frerks is dedicating his Eagle Scout Project to helping out his community. The Xaverian High School student is making it his mission to clean up a stretch of sidewalk that has become unusable due to garbage, overgrown vegetation and sand from Sandy. For his Eagle Scout Project, Frerks is going to clean up the sidewalk that runs along State Road/ Rockaway Point Boulevard from Fort Tilden to Reid Avenue in Breezy Point. Over time, the 1.67mile sidewalk has been covered by litter and overgrown vegetation and when Sandy hit, the situation was made worse by sand that further buried the pathway. This has caused Breezy Point and Roxbury residents to have to walk in the street, making it a dangerous situation, especially for school children who use the road. On Saturday, February 28, Frerks is making it his mission to make the sidewalk usable again. He will clean up the sidewalk starting at 8 a.m., but he could use some help for such a large project. Frerks is asking for volunteers to come out and help with the clean-

up. Volunteers must sign in at St. Genevieve’s Church in Roxbury so volunteer hours can be recorded. Anyone who helps out can receive a Community Service letter, so the project is ideal for students or anyone that wants to do something positive for the neighborhood. Volunteers are advised to dress appropriately for the cleanup and are encouraged to bring their own tools such as shovels, rakes, clippers and gloves. Frerks is also rais-

About 35 people attended a meeting at the YMCA on Monday, February 23, to get a better understanding of the Liberty Port Ambrose Liquefied Natural Gas project that is being proposed offshore about 19 miles south of Long Beach. The news of what critics say is a potentially dangerous port is not new, but about a dozen in the crowd said they came out to learn about the project for the first time. Jessica Roff of the Catskill Mountainkeepers and Patrick Robbins of the Sane Energy Project, as well as State Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr., Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder and representatives from Councilman Ulrich and Richards’ office spoke about why the project is a bad idea. With March 16 being the last day that the Maritime Administration and US Coast Guard are accepting public comments on the proposed project, the meeting served as a way to give the public more information, urge them to educate their friends and neighbors and encourage them to write letters to Governor Andrew Cuomo, as he has the power to veto the project. In 2011, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie vetoed a similar proposal that was closer to New Jersey. Christie also has power to veto this current proposal. “This keeps coming back over and over again. You always have to be paying attention,” Roff said. Port Ambrose is a Liquefied Natural Gas port that will accept LNG through vessels. The gas will go into an underwater pipeline that will feed into the existing Transco Lower New York Bay Lateral to bring more natural gas to New York and New Jersey during the peak winter heating months. Roff and Robbins said nothing good will come from this project as it is dangerous in itself and will disrupt the ocean, contribute to global warming and rising sea levels in the future, a concern that would perk up the ears of anyone who experienced Sandy’s flooding. They also say the port and the vessels carrying the LNG would be terrorist target as LNG is highly explosive and flammable. While Liberty Natural Gas is proposing Port Ambrose as an import facility that will benefit New York and New Jersey, Roff and Robbins believe the company is misleading in its stated intentions and that the project would eventually become an export facility that would benefit European countries, where natural gas can be sold at higher prices. Roff said there are currently 28 natural gas project proposals being reviewed by the

federal government and of them, only three, Port Ambrose and projects off of Maine and one off the coast of Washington State, are being proposed as import facilities. The projects in Maine and Washington are also being proposed as export facilities, meaning Port Ambrose is the only proposed project that is said to be for import only. “They are lying,” Roff said. Liberty says the project will create 800 jobs, which is a big seller for supporters like Jack Friedman of the Queens Chamber of Commerce, but Roff and Robbins said when all is said and done, the project will only create six permanent jobs. They say a wind power project, being considered for the same area Port Ambrose would be, would create thousands of jobs and would be a safer energy option. While the mission of Monday’s meeting was to discuss the negative aspect of the project and why it should be vetoed, one resident told the crowd that he welcomes it. “I think this project is fabulous. About two or three years ago there was a proposal for an LNG island five miles offshore, which was very dangerous, but this is 20 miles offshore. If positioned five miles offshore, it could be a terrorist target but this is 20 miles offshore,” Peter Stubben said. “Natural gas is 50 percent cheaper and cleaner than crude oil. I’m very much for it.” At the end of the meeting, guests were asked to write letters to the governor, encouraging him to veto the project. This is a three-part article. The first two columns will discuss vitamins and the third column will discuss vitamin supplements and their usage. Vitamin A – There are two forms of this vitamin, preformed vitamin A and provitamin A (betacarotene). It occurs naturally in foods such as organ meats (high in cholesterol however), some fish (salmon), green leafy veggies and broccoli, carrots and squash and fruits like cantaloupe, apricots and mangos. Milk and cereal have added vitamin A. Vitamin A deficiency is rare in the US but low levels can cause vision problems and may eventually lead to blindness. High levels of preformed A

can cause toxic effects while high levels of beta-carotene can turn the skin orange but is not toxic. Vitamin B-6 – Also called pyridoxine, it is found in poultry, fish and organ meats, starchy veggies like potatoes and fruit (other than citrus). Deficiency is rare in the US but can cause anemia, skin rashes, scaly skin on the lips, cracks at the corners of the mouth and a swollen tongue. Thought to be helpful in preventing heart disease, cancer and adult memory loss. Toxicity is rare and only seen in those who take supplements but toxicity can cause severe nerve damage. Vitamin B-12 – B-12 is attached to food proteins and is separated from the proteins by stomach acid and then it combines with intrinsic factor and both are absorbed

in the early small intestine. It is found in beef liver, clams, fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk and other dairy products, cereals, yeasts and other food products fortified with B-12. B-12 deficiency is thought to affect 1.5 to 15 percent of the population and is most commonly seen in older adults, people with pernicious anemia (they cannot make intrinsic factor), those who have had gastrointestinal surgery, including weight loss surgery, and vegans and vegetarians (B-12 is only naturally found in animal products). Deficiency can cause anemia, tiredness, weakness and nerve problems (i.e. tingling in the hands and feet). Supplements are given by injection or under the tongue. Oral supplements often do not work for the same reason that caused the deficiency in the first place. B-12 can lower homocysteine levels (high homocysteine levels are thought to be linked to heart disease and dementia) and can improve energy and athletic performance. There is no B-12 toxicity. Vitamin C – It is found in citrus and other fruits, vegetables and foods fortified with it. It acts as an antioxidant in the body and reduces free radicals which are nasty particles formed in the body from transforming food into energy. Free radicals are also found in

cigarette smoke and air pollution and created by exposure to ultraviolet light. Most of us get enough vitamin C from the foods we eat, however smokers, those exposed to secondhand smoke, infants fed evaporated or boiled cow’s milk (infants under one year of age should not be fed cow’s milk), people with very limited diets and those with intestinal problems, cancer and kidney disease should consider taking supplements. Deficiency is rare and leads to scurvy, a disease of the mouth that causes oral sores and tooth loss (British seamen in the age of sail), fatigue, joint pains and poor wound healing. Research is ongoing on whether vitamin C is helpful in preventing cancer, macular degeneration and cataracts due to its antioxidant effects. Vitamin C does not help cure or prevent the common cold. Toxicity can cause diarrhea, nausea and abdominal cramps. This discussion will continue in the next two columns. In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, parks and playgrounds throughout The Rockaway Peninsula were damaged and have since been in desperate need of repair. Fences, benches, playground safety surfaces and storm drains all needed to be repaired or replaced. Senator Charles Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Congressman Gregory Meeks, and Mayor Bill de Blasio have announced over $1 million dollars in FEMA funding for the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation to help rebuild damaged parks. “In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, many of Rockaway’s cherished parks and playgrounds were seriously damaged and repairs were desperately needed so that they can be enjoyed by families and children for years to come,” Senator Schumer said. “This federal funding helps rebuild these Sandy-damaged playgrounds without putting a heavy burden on local taxpayers.” The funding will go towards permanent repairs at Beach 30th Street, Beach 59th Street, Rockaway Beach Playground M, Arverne Playground, Rockaway Freeway Park, Conch Playground, and

Hammel Playground. “I welcome these important investments to rebuild our parks and bring our community one step closer to putting the destruction of Superstorm Sandy behind us. The comprehensive damage caused by Superstorm Sandy left the public parks and playgrounds in the Rockaways and Far Rockaways nearly unusable. With these investments our parks will once again be the centers that bring our community’s seniors, families, and youth together,” Rep. Gregory Meeks said. “Sandy devastated our lives and our community, including the beachfront parks and playgrounds that serve our families and draw visitors to the neighborhood. CPR class. This bodes well with a recently delivered study coming out of Australia “Guardians of the Surf: The role and value of surfers in Australian beach and coastal surf rescues,” by Anna Attard. Anna states “Surfers with prior water-safety training are more likely to perform a higher number of rescues, however ability to perform rescues is not associated with formal training but rather number of years’ experience surfing.” She goes on to say: “This study clearly demonstrates that surfers are found in locations that can be hazardous to swimmers and inexperienced surfers and are often in a position to assist beach users who find themselves in trouble. However, inexperienced surfers are sometimes more hindrance than help, if they do not have the knowledge or experience to perform a successful rescue. Additionally this study identified a gap in surfer ability of treating severe injuries. “This suggests that further training of both experienced and inexperienced surfers would help to prepare them for the eventuality of a surfer-performed rescue.” Some of the interesting numbers reported: 63 percent is the number of surfers in the study who believe they have saved a life. 75 percent of rescues were because of rips. 26 percent of rescues were on beaches with few people around and 78 percent of surfers are happy to help in rescue situations. Some great news filtered out of the Parks Department this last week, where Dorothy Lewandowski mentioned that they are considering adding two extra surf beaches to the Rockaway Peninsula, Beach 65th to Beach 67th streets and Beach 110th to Beach 112th. There was an exclusive meeting back in December last year with all the Parks Commissioners and two of the Rockaway Civic Associations, which was hosted by Queens Borough President Melinda Katz. The invite was also extended to the Rockaway Beach Surfer’s Association where I got to present a few action items, namely expansion of surfing beaches, due to over-crowding, also clear definitions on what constitutes a surfing craft as opposed to that of a “flotation device.” These items seemed to be taken well by the Parks Dept. and were also bolstered by the Civic Associations presenting material in unison with the RBSA. Our initial beach suggestions where Beach 60th to Beach 62nd and a weekly rotating surfing beach between Beach 72nd to Beach 84th. But we’ll take what we can get. To my knowledge, the City of New York has never engaged its surfing community in this fashion and it’s something I foresee will occur again, as the numbers of surfers increase and the surfing lifestyle and culture permeate the city at an even greater pace than it already is. One of the next action items at the upcoming RBSA meeting is a free

Smoked Turkey Soup with a Caribbean Flare By Sharon Feldman With such cold days, making soup hits the spot … Package of smoked turkey wings or parts 2 potatoes 1 sweet potato 2 large carrots 1 large sweet onion 2 scallions 1 cup black eyed peas or yellow split peas 4-6 cloves garlic 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1 tablespoon olive oil fresh thyme (4 sprigs) 1 tablespoon fresh oregano 10-14 cups of water 1 can chicken stock Fresh spinach leaves or cabbage or both Salt and Pepper to taste Notes: Optional ingredients – yam, green banana, cassava. Use any greens you like... A nice addition would be cubed pumpkin or butternut squash. Chop the onion, garlic, scallions and herbs. Heat the oil in a deep soup pot and add the chopped ingredients. Allow that to cool for 3-5 minutes on a low heat. Wash and drain the black eye peas or yellow split peas and add it to the pot along with the chopped carrots. Add the

smoked turkey pieces and pour in the water, chicken stock add the salt and pepper and bring to a boil. Reduce to simmer. Allow to simmer at least an hour or until the peas are tender. Peel and prep the root vegetables. Peel the skins from the potatoes. Try to cut each in even size pieces so they cook evenly. After an hour, the peas should be tender and you should have a pot packed with flavor. Remove the smoked turkey pieces and let cool. Now add everything into the pot and bring it to a boil. If you find the liquid does not cover the vegetables, add more water. Strip the pieces of meat off the bone and add it back to the pot. Add the bones back as well for additional flavor. It takes approximately half hour to 45 minutes to cook after you’ve added the vegetables. You’re looking for a thick consistency. Try not to over stir or you will end up with porridge. The longer you cook it, the better it tastes. If you want to make the soup a little thicker, try using potato flakes. As the soup cools, it gets thicker. Sometimes, as with a stew dish, it tastes better the next day!

Praise For A Son Of Rockaway People often walk into our lives in the most unlikely ways. Our paths weren’t suppose to cross, but somehow they did. We should not have known each other, but now we do. We were not friends, but now we are. If you know him, you most likely feel the same way. Whether he was sweeping the porch at Connollys, busting one arm push-ups outside The Circle or dropping serious sports trivia on your dome at Bungalow Bar, everyone in this neighborhood has crossed paths with Legend and “Son” of Rockaway Ceddy Ced. I put Son in quotation marks for a reason. Cedric was not born in this neighborhood, in fact he was not raised here. But he has earned his title over years of calling

this town home, and embodying the same spirit and tenacity that make this neighborhood what it is. For everything you think you know about Ced, here’s what you may not know. Ceddy was a loving family man. He had a wife, he had children, he had parents. He had a successful career, his strong work ethic afforded him a comfortable life. He is a patriot, having served his country well with quiet valiance and endless honor in the United States Army. If your story sounds familiar to his, ask yourself what would you do if you lost everything you love in an instant. If your life, and everything that drives you disappeared overnight. Because that’s Ceddy’s story, that’s what happened to him. Tragically, in

the 80’s Ced lost his parents, wife and children in an awful automobile accident. The details of his life in this week’s column are not intended for shock value but rather serve as a lesson on facing life shattering tragedy, with undeterred courage. After a few years, Ced was able to speak of his love for his family in fond recollection. The significance of his story has far more implications than a tragic tale of woe. For a man that has faced such a hardship, he is still capable of the same qualities and characteristics that made him a loving son, a devoted husband, and above all a caring father. The endless love and spirited devotion he had for his family are but the same he has for his adopted family in Rockaway. He loves this neighborhood. “People accepted me for who and what I was when I came down here, and I immediately felt like I was home.” The work ethic that once allowed him a successful career, at 52 years of age, his hustle is still on point as he works odd jobs to cover rent, and splurge on an occasional (every day) treat of Entenmanns. The same courage that led him to the service of our country, after years of holding it in, have allowed him to share the details of his previous life. The undying loyalty to the people of this neighborhood that took him in. For a man that does not have

much by way of possessions, he delights in an obligatory offer of his favorite snack with friends, and if he could, give you the shirt off his back. There is a story behind every man’s journey. And despite hardships during that journey, man is able to keep it going. The paths that they take may be unfamiliar to them, but nonetheless they forge ahead. Ceddy’s path took him to Rockaway Beach over two decades ago. And since that time, he has become a loyal friend to countless people. He is well worthy of being called a “Son” of Rockaway. This column could fill the Rockaway Times about what make Ceddy the man that he is. But at this point, it’s probably best just to “Say no mo!”

Breezy Point Bowling League Recap By Joe Hanna

Glow Bowling Chick Night was a rousing success on January 31st. Glow Bowling was almost dead in the water as management was not willing to accommodate our request to have the lights dimmed, something about “We only do that for our regular bowlers” (and what are we, irregular bowlers?) was what I was told at the front desk. However, I’m not sure what was said by an anonymous female bowler, but when she was through with her meeting with management the lights were off, the music was louder, and I swear the beer was colder. Despite a 5–2 loss at the hands of The Fun Ghouls, Alley Cats were able to stay at the top of the charts. The Fun Ghouls inched up the standings to position themselves right behind the leaders. Sean Shevlin narrowly missed in his pursuit of the ever elusive 200 game with a 193 in game two for the Ghouls. Brian King’s 183 helped the Cats sneak away with a game one victory and keep the Ghouls from ascending to the top. Neil Lanzetta carried Mother Strikers through a 7-0 drubbing of Breezy Buddies and into a second place tie with games of 213 & 237 and a 630 series. Neil now occupies the top spot for both high scratch game and high scratch series for the season. Fantastic night Neil!

Gutter Balls dropped all three games to Ebowlers and they join the Ghouls and Strikers in a three way tie for second. Some notable high games for the evening, aside from Neil’s phenomenal night, included Terry Crossan (Winter Bockers) with a 203 game and Tom Meade (Spin Doctors) also a 203 game as well as a 517 series. Steve Mastrandrea (Got Balls?) rolled a 516 series. On the ladies side, Jennifer White (Lucky Strikers) bowled a 180 game, Danielle Corral (Misfits) tossed a 164 game and a 455 series, Patricia Lanzetta (Mother Strikers) rolled a 160 game and a 464 series, and Laurie Carlson (F.F.B.’s) put up a 429 series. In the “Nowhere to Go But Up” position, Split Personalities used a 5-2 victory over Porch Time to move out of the basement and make room for the plummeting Breezy Buddies, who, for the second straight night, dropped all three games. The remaining four nights are shaping up to be very exciting with 14 of the 34 teams all within 10 points of first place. The season continues this Saturday, February 28th, at Strike Ten Lanes on Strickland Avenue in Mill Basin where the drinks will flow and the pins will spill. EMT’s from FDNY EMS station 47 responded to a call over the radio of a baby that wasn’t breathing. EMTs Ian D’Souza and Chayim Spiegel retrieved a three-month old baby girl from a property near Beach 71st Street on Beach Channel Drive. The EMTs provided assisted ventilation to the infant and took her to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. According to a statement from St. John’s, the child was brought to the Emergency Department “due to cessation of breathing. Vacationing in sunny San Diego is a place where everyone seems happy and so healthy. Of course why wouldn’t they be happy? The average temperature is 65 degrees. It’s a perfect little world with so many beautiful beaches. This was our first family vacation in California. It won’t be our last, that’s for sure. There is something about the west coast that makes it feel like you are in a fantasy world. The people are very friendly and use the word “awesome” quite a bit. They all seem to be on a cloud. San Diego has an amazing landscape with some magnificent homes. The coast is stunning with cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The beaches are clean and there is some great surf. Everyone seems to exercise: running, biking, surfing, cross fit, and of course, yoga. Perhaps because the temperature is so comfortable you are inspired to go outside and exercise. We exercised everyday while on vacation. It was a pure pleasure to wake up and go for a run along the beach, putting on shorts and a t-shirt. As much as I loved California and all the positive attributes, I would never leave New York. Don’t get me wrong, the weather can be a nuisance and this has been a horrid winter but there is something really special about New York City. For one thing my entire family lives here. I may not see them as much as I would like but I have the

option to visit with a short car ride. Life is so short and for me I want to spend it near the people I love and adore. I treasure my friends as well. They are a part of me and who I am as a person. I don’t want to be in a different time zone. This vacation I chose not to go to a yoga class, but rather spend as much time with my husband and daughter. It was really nice to reconnect. Instead we went to the hotel gym together. However by the third day I had to take out my mat. Yoga is definitely what makes me feel alive and well. It also helps me feel connected to my real life. Using by breath, body and mind keeps me grounded. I am at ease and can easily go with the flow when I go to my mat. It humbled me to go to the mat with a tight body, teaching me to be more compassionate to my students when they return after vacationing. So as much as I loved the beautiful coastline of San Diego, I wouldn’t trade New York City for anything. My heart and soul are on the east coast. I am here to stay but will most definitely take some warm vacations every winter. Next one is Rincon in April. Half of Rockaway goes to sunny Rincon so I will be right at home.
