Residences at The Gemini Offer a Slice of Beach Life By Kami-Leigh Agard

A strip of buildings along Rockaway Beach Boulevard that were burned down after Hurricane Sandy have risen from the ashes as the Residences at the Gemini, boasting 54 units of one- and two-bedroom apartments and four community/commercial spaces. The apartments not only offer both ocean and Manhattan skyline views, but a chance to experience what’s best about Rockaway — the beach. The development broke ground in January 2016, and the apartments and retail space were put on the market in late 2018. According to Dino Tomassetti Jr, owner of the Gemini development and also a Rockaway native, 10 units have already been rented; and two commercial tenants are already in, an adult daycare and an AT&T mobile store. “For the two remaining commercial spaces, we are looking at a gym, a yoga studio and a

few restaurants that approached us. We really want to utilize the commercial space for amenity uses, that could be enjoyed by both Gemini’s residents and the surrounding community,” Tomassetti Jr. said. The Gemini is also going to have an attended parking garage just in time for the summer season. “We have a very large parking garage, which takes up the entire footprint of the building. So beachgoers and visitors to the area will be able to drive in, pay a fee, and pick up their car, all without the hassle of hunting for a parking space,” Tomassetti Jr. said. New York Housing Program (which replaced the 421a affordable housing program last year). At market rate, the price for a one-bedroom is $1,800 per month and a two-bedroom is just over $2,000 per month, depending on the view and layout. According to Tomassetti Jr., there isn’t much of a difference between the market rate and affordable housing apartments. “Thirty-four percent of the apartments are affordable, but there really isn’t a big variation in the rent compared to the market rate apartments. They are all good quality units with nice high-quality finishes, a beautiful kitchen, living room and bathroom. A big plus is that all the apartments are roomy. These are not tiny apartments, unlike the recent trend with buildings cramming people in very small rooms. Also, the natural light is beautiful,” Tomassetti Jr. said. Parade day is Saturday, March 2, and among the lineup will be a bevy of fine lads and lasses that make up this year’s honorees. This year’s Grand Marshal Thomas A. Callahan, is the president and business manager of Local 15, 15A, 15B, 15C, 15D and 15H, the International Union of Operating Engineers. This Long Island resident is a 21-year member and a third-generation Operating Engineer, who moved up in the ranks before ultimately becoming the sixth president and business manager of the union in 2014. This year’s Gael of the Year, Kieran O’Hanlon, is a sitting councilor in the City of Limerick in Ireland. O’Hanlon is a consummate politician who has placed the City of Limerick and the Council of Limerick, at the center of his life’s mission. However, he’s no stranger to Rockaway. He has marched in Rockaway’s parade on several occasions. This year’s Honorary Female

Grand Marshal is Cathy Hogan. This Yonkers resident, who spent many summers in Rockaway, is an active participant in several Irish organizations, including the LAOH Our Lady of Knock Division 19 in Yonkers, the LAOH Westchester County Board, the Clare Football Club of New York, the Galway Association of New York and many others. John Norbury is this year’s Honorary Grand Marshal. This Howard Beach resident has been a laborer since 1986 and has served as Vice President of Construction and General Building Laborers’ Local 79 and President of the NYC Building Trades Queens Board of Business Agents. This year’s Deputy Grand Marshals include Father Tom Basquel, Pat Cullen, James Morton, Lynda Collins, Wil Hurley, Michael Moran, Donald Morrish, MD., Joe Caruana and John O’Grady. This roundup includes several locals. Local resident, Father

Tom Basquel was assigned to St.Camillus – St.Virgilius Parish in 2015 and has been Mission Director for the past ten years. James Morton, a Roxbury resident is a member of the NYC Department of Sanitation, as well as a volunteer at the Rockaway Point Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division 21 (AOH 21). Lynda Collins, a lifelong Rockaway Beach resident, served as President of the Home School Association at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Academy in Rockaway Beach for six years, and is a member of LAOH Division 25. Rockaway Beach resident, Wil Hurley, has been an MTA Track Manager for more than 25 years. He also serves as vice president of AOH 21, and is a member of the Rockaway Beach Civic Association. You know I can’t resist dropping a proverb on you that was dropped on me: “If wars were fought with words, Ireland would rule the world.” Of course, there are a couple of variations on what’s keeping Ireland from ruling the world but it’s hard to argue that it rules a good chunk of Rockaway this week, including this column. I’m guessing a lot of people who live in New Orleans hate Mardi Gras. They can do without the crowds and the madness. I’m guessing a few feel the same way about Parade Day in Rockaway. But New Orleans without Mardi Gras, Rockaway without St. Paddy’s — they just wouldn’t be the same. Among other things, the parade presents me with the chance to regurgitate some Irishisms. I get to say things

are grand and brilliant and ask people, where’s the crack? Yes, Katie McFadden, I know it’s spelled craic. Whaddaya think I am, an eeijit? Everyone knows that with Irish Alzheimer’s you forget everything but your grudges. And the grudges live on until you read the name of your nemesis in the Irish Comics otherwise known as the obituaries. (Sometimes people ask why we don’t publish obituaries. Well, I just get too sad when I lose another reader). You know, good Irish old-timers might express frustration by saying Jesus, Mary, and Joseph while the new, saltier, generation expresses it with: for feck’s sake. I can’t remember (see Irish Alzheimer’s) who told me this one but I get a kick out of the cockiness. He said, any Irishman worth his salt, walks into the room, and convinces himself he’s either the smartest or funniest guy in the room. If he’s neither, he

knows he’s the best looking. And if none of those fit he can still believe he’s got the best singing voice. Such cockiness or arrogance is actually kinda rare in Irishisms. The Irish are usually more comfortable putting themselves down or making light of tough circumstances. When you pack your clothes in a trash bag and call it Irish Luggage you’re not exactly boasting. There are Irish Twins (children born within a year of each other) and Irish Exits (you know, slipping out without saying goodbye). There are Irish Wakes and Irish Tempers. And there’s even Irish Camouflage — otherwise known as freckles. There are a few that can’t be said in church. And easier said after a pint. And while the Irish jokes are plenty, there are some words and sentiments that seem appropriate as the parade takes shape. Do not resent growing old,

some are denied the privilege. Irish women are like tea bags, they don’t know their strength until they’re in hot water. A silent mouth is musical. It’s often a man’s mouth that broke his nose. May good luck be your friend in whatever you do, and may trouble be always a stranger to you. May the lilt of Irish laughter lighten every load, May the mist of Irish magic shorten every road, May you taste the sweetest pleasures that fortune ere bestowed, And may all your friends remember, all the favors you are owed. All very nice. But I’ll end on some practical advice: Your kilt should be short enough for a jig and long enough to hide your lucky charms. (This column runs every year before the parade. ***** Happy Rockaway St. Patrick’s Parade Day! ***** It does feel strange publishing the last day of February and then looking up and seeing the parade just two days later. Time flies. But hey, it’s also the unofficial start of spring— we’ll take it! As for the weather, the forecast seems Irish with morning showers and a high of 41 degrees, but the parade goes on rain or shine. Big round of applause for Michael Benn and the rest of the parade committee that makes this annual event great, no matter the weather. ***** Now you know these words will resonate with voters everywhere. When asked if he’s running for president, Bill de Blasio said he hadn’t decided,

but called it “a very personal reality.” Whatever, you say, Bill. When asked if he would be attending the Rockaway St. Patrick’s Parade, the mayor’s press office never got back to us. A very personal disappointment for us. ***** Speaking of voters, a respectable number pulled the lever (or whatever they do in voting booths these days) for Eric Ulrich in Tuesday’s Public Advocate Special Election race. Seventeen people were on the ballot and Ulrich placed second behind winner, Jumaane Williams, a City Councilman from Brooklyn. Lew Simon was among others who were ready to for Ulrich’s council seat had he won. ***** There are seasonal job openings at Gateway. If you are looking for summer employment, check out the opportunities at usajobs.gov. Laborers, lifeguards, and other positions are open, but the deadlines are in early March so hurry up. ***** There’s a march on Saturday,

but there’s also a run. The annual Parade Day 5K starts at 10:30 a.m. Registration starts at 9 a.m. at the Gliders Gym at 114-04 Beach Channel Drive. And besides exercise, you get shirts, beer, soda bread. It’s a great tradition! We’re not sure of the rules but sounds like fun. The fun will be at St. Francis de Sales on Friday, March 8 and you can buy tickets at the rectory. Parade Day ShamRockaway Style By Katie McFadden Parade weekend is here and there’s plenty of pre- and post-parade options to make those Irish eyes smile. The 44th Annual Queens County St. Patrick’s Day Parade kicks off at 1 p.m. on Beach 130th Street and Newport Avenue. The parade makes a turn down Beach 116th Street to Rockaway Beach Boulevard and continues down to Beach 100th Street. The grand stand will be at Beach 105th Street. Before the parade, at 9 a.m., there will be a Mass for peace and justice in Ireland at St. Francis de Sales Church on Beach 129th Street. All are welcome to attend. Hosting a parade day party? Ludwig’s Catering is all booked for orders, but Cuisine by Claudette may still have some options with corned beef dinner packages for up to 10 people at $190, or a la carte options. Call 718-945-5511 to inquire. If you’re up to cooking, Curran’s Superior has all your meats. They carry all-natural corned beef brined to perfection on premises. Supplies are limited, so order quick by calling 718634-7408. If you miss out, you can still get some products for an Irish breakfast like Tommy Moloney’s fresh Irish sausage, bacon or black and white pudding. Want someone else to do the cooking on parade day morning? Head to the Rockaway Brewing Company on Beach 72nd Street for a full Irish breakfast from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., or spend the day recovering from the parade on Sunday, as they’ll be serving it up again. Why not run before doing the jig? The annual Parade Day 5K kicks off right before the parade, starting at 10:30 a.m. on the Beach 116th Street Boardwalk. Number pickup and day-of registration takes place at Rockaway Gliders (114-04 Beach Channel Drive) starting 90 minutes before the event. All runners get a t-shirt, a medal and Rockapulco Gold beer at the after-party at Gliders. To pre-register, head to www.rockapulcorun.com. The parade may be the main

focus of the day, but there will be plenty of after-parties going on for those who want to keep celebrating. Bungalow Bar will kick things off at 4 p.m. with performances by The Irish Mutts featuring some members of Indaculture, and DJ music by Tommy Tubs. Plus, they’ll have green frozens and great Irish fare to keep you full and satisfied. Wine With Sue is more rock and roll than a traditional Irish band but this band is full of lads that know how to make a party great, no matter the theme. They’ll be playing at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club on Beach 126th Street starting at 3 p.m. “The Tent,” always a popular option, will once again be in the Sands Point parking lot at 230 Beach 102nd Street. This 23+ event hosted by the Rockaway Rugby Club features music by The Newfie Bastards starting at 3 p.m., followed by popular performers, Shilelagh Law at 5 p.m. and DJ Tubbs takes over at 8 p.m. to end the night right. There will be a cover charge to support the Fishheads. RBQ’s on Beach 98th Street has an all-day party starting at 1 p.m. Indulge in Irish fare and Guinness while Jeff Conlon plays some hits on guitar and bagpipes starting at 2 p.m. Then Gerald Bair takes over the party, playing your favorite Irish tunes starting at 7 p.m. Community House on Beach 102nd will kick off the party at 11 a.m. with drink specials and corned beef sandwiches. They’ll also have a DJ starting at 2 p.m. Connolly’s, although a summer bar, is opening for the oc-

casion and getting in the spirit with Greena Coladas, corned beef heroes and Nancy’s soda bread. Plus DJ Paddy Tubz will be playing music all day and night. Doors open at noon. Relive Dalton’s parade parties at Happy Jack’s Burger Bar near Beach 109th Street. Starting at 2 p.m., they’ll have live music by The Brothers Campion, including Chris and Billy Campion. Plus they’ll have food and drink specials, homemade Irish Soda Bread, their famous Dublin Egg

Rolls, corned beef and cabbage, and shamrock giveaways. Still Hungry? The Wharf is serving up corned beef sandwiches, Guinness shepherds pie and cold brew Irish coffee with Bailey’s whipped cream. If you want to keep your party going late, Rogers Pub on Beach 116th Street hosts The Brooklyn Bards, playing traditional and modern Irish tunes starting at 9 p.m. Some other great options this weekend? A Delicate Balance In the 1966 Edward Albee play, “A Delicate Balance,” two neighbors come over to their friends’ house and ask to stay with them because they are frightened. They never explain what they are afraid of, but this fear permeates the whole play. It’s a very weird play in that respect and I never understood or appreciated it fully: except, I have found myself thinking about it often these days. You might say to yourself, Lazer, you haven’t written in almost six months and when you come back, you write

about being afraid? Well, kinda, yeah. You see I have been having these feelings for the past six months, and they are not all good ones. For instance, I am afraid that the great summers we have had since Sandy and the rise of the Rockaways are somehow coming to an end. And this was way before the announced closing of St. Camillus or the homeless shelter on Beach 101st Street. And it is before the announced closing of several stores on Beach 116th Street. It has just been a generalized

feeling that since the government built the boardwalk and implemented the ferry that they would come back and ask for their pound of flesh. I also get nervous with rising interest rates that people will get antsy about their homes and look to sell, move south and deplete the peninsula of great people. I see some of that already with some testing the waters in the winter months on a temporary basis. I worry if our local, state and federal politicians are up to the task of true democratic debate to arrive at the best possible path forward. I worry that the technology that I watched take over the stock trading world and eliminate jobs by the thousands, will seep into other industries and eliminate the human from all processes. Now truth be told, I am turning a special age next month and while a particular number never frightened me, this one does a little. Why, I have no idea. Maybe it’s because after a recent outing, and having a great time by the way, I limped for a week because the knee that was operated on three years ago became swollen and painful. Or maybe it’s the fact that every time I get a cut these days, instead of it healing right away, it takes weeks to fully heal. And don’t get me started about driving at night. At one time I had myself convinced that it was headlight technology that had changed, but now I suspect I may have been just fooling myself. And then there are friends who tell me that they go to dinner at 4:30 in the afternoon

to beat the crowds. Beat the crowds? You don’t live by any crowds! Or maybe the friends who simply don’t come out anymore at all. Why? I don’t know, I think they are afraid, to be honest. Or maybe the other friend who knows he has to do chemo treatment, but really doesn’t know what that means. When I retired, I was full of vim and vigor, ready to conquer the world as I attacked a half a dozen projects at full speed and had a half-dozen more behind them. After having done the projects on the list and the trips I wanted to do, I suddenly realized, I don’t have a half-dozen projects on my list anymore, maybe only a few. What do I do when those are done? Yes, I have good news on the horizon with a daughter getting married, and getting married to a great guy. And yes, everyone else in the family is doing just terrific, all working, living their lives, doing cool things. And yes, I am blessed to have my dad turning 91 this month and in full control of his faculties and driving faster than I do. So, there is nothing to fear there, only positive good things. So, what is it? Well, I have come to realize that it is truly a delicate balance, and I must believe that the sun will conquer the dawn; that the spring will bring flowers through the snow; and that the ocean will once again be warm and inviting. I just have to have faith that Rockaway will endure. Or maybe just go south for the winter, these gray skies are killing me!

A Soldier’s Send-off By Katie McFadden

On Wednesday, February 13, Frank Lombardi’s flag-draped casket laid before a parlor within the George Werst Funeral Home in Glendale. Somber, yet pride-filled looks filled the faces of service attendees. But those faces were of those that didn’t know the deceased. They didn’t even know much more than his name. They didn’t have to. Like Lombardi, those in attendance had at one point raised their right hand and took an oath to serve their country. Unfortunately for Lombardi, after his death, his body remained unclaimed by friends or family, but those in the room claimed him as one of their brothers and came together to give him the send-off he deserved. This act of burying indigent servicemen, those that had no one else to bury them, is an almost monthly occurrence for those of the Queens County American Legion. American Legion members from Rockaway, Breezy Point, Broad Channel and other parts of Queens and even Long Island, come together to pay their respects to a fellow soldier that has passed. On the second Wednesday of the month, if there is a body of a veteran that needs to be laid to rest, these fellow veterans are there to be the ones to make it possible. Oftentimes, there is very little known about the deceased, other than a name and some information about their military service, as confirmed by the veteran’s DD-214. During a eulogy presented by Queens County American Legion Adjutant Paul Schottenhamel, those in attendance got to learn a bit about Lombardi, who was born in Brooklyn on April 4, 1936. Lombardi was drafted into the U.S. Army on June 23, 1960. He trained as a Light Weapons Infantryman and deployed to the Federal Republic of Germany in November 1960. He was assigned to Company A, 2nd Battle Group, 4th Infantry, 3rd Infantry Division, in Bamberg. Lombardi served in Germany for

one year and seven months, before he returned to the United States and was released from Active Duty on June 14, 1962 at Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn. He remained a member of the Inactive Reserve until May 1966. After he died on November 23, 2018, there was no fam-

ily to claim his body. At least not blood. “We’re their family,” Schottenhamel said. Originally the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) handled the local funerals, until Schottenhamel became aware of them and decided that the Queens County

American Legion should step in. “When I heard about this, I felt like the VVA was doing too much work, so we wanted to get involved,” Schottenhamel said. Rockaway resident, Mike Honan said, “I was county commander at the time and Paul came to me and said, ‘they’re involved, so why shouldn’t we?’ The membership agreed and we proceeded to become an organizational friend and get involved in this program.” Honan explained that the process of burying veterans with no family to claim them starts with the city’s Department of Veterans Services, which, working with the NYPD and other agencies, helps determine if a body that is found is that of a service member. Normally, an unclaimed body winds up being buried in Potter’s Field on Hart Island, in an unmarked grave with dozens of others. But when it’s a veteran, the service member is eligible to be buried in a military cemetery. The city cannot be directly involved in the burial, which is where organizational friends such as VVA and the American Legion step in to handle the services. When the Queens County American Legion became involved, Schottenhamel reached out to those at the George Werst Funeral Home for assistance. As a member of the Dignity Memorial network, the Glendale funeral home not only agreed to assist with the burials, but to cover all associated costs and refuse any eligible reimbursement from the city, according to Honan. For those who attend the services, holding such funerals has personal meaning and there’s a deep sense of pride in being able to give a fellow service member a proper military funeral. “These people have nobody to mourn them and every veteran, we mourn, no matter what. Everybody that attends these funerals served their country during times of war. I served. We know what they did, that’s why we come Continued on page 16

Like the Oscars the night before, our latest Community Board meeting (CB14) at the Knights of Columbus on Beach 90th Street, was filled with the authentic drama and legitimate indignance of a community consistently overlooked by the establishment. Rockaway, “the red-headed step child of the city,” as one resident quipped, seemed to be reeling from the impact of yet another homeless shelter imposed upon the community without the economic and social services to support it, or appropriate community involvement. And, the packed room of people who came out to voice their opinions, clearly felt that enough is enough. State Senator Joseph Addabbo kicked off the meeting with an impassioned, frustration-fueled update on Rockaway’s most recent homeless shelter scenario. Fresh from a meeting with Department of Homeless Services (DHS), he cited our Mayor’s “pattern of neglect” toward Rockaway as a key issue. According to Addabbo, our Mayor is “repeatedly jamming large-population shelters into our neighborhood without notice or consideration for our schools, our senior centers, or infrastructure.” Addabbo called attention to our Mayor’s indifference and procedural inadequacies. “We’ve always had a homeless crisis in the city, but our current Mayor simply can’t handle it.” Addabbo asserted, “We’re talking, but the Mayor isn’t listening!” He noted that simply stashing the homeless in hotels, without appropriate support, is not a solution. He urgently described the “ripple effect” of shelters within a community, without community input. He suggested that more police presence, better transportation and medical facilities to accommodate the homeless influx would be a win-win situation for our current and “new residents.” Most importantly, Senator Addabbo informed the

community of legislation he has introduced which could more effectively address the homeless crisis. Co-Sponsored by Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, the bill would compel the city to do a neighborhood assessment and actively engage the community before even contemplating building a shelter. After all, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. “Unicorns and rainbows” was Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato’s colorful take on the frustrating “false advertising” consistent with her experience with DHS. After attending the meeting with Senator Addabbo on February 25, she noted that DHS “pushed back on everything… remaining vague or outright deceptive on details.” For example, originally pitched as a shelter for “Black veterans,” DHS now states that residents of our new shelter on Beach 101st Street, may not be “black” or “veterans.” She convincingly conveyed the inconceivable lack of logic in placing another 120 homeless men in a community, which still has more than 100 Rockaway natives displaced from Superstorm Sandy—six years later. She noted that minimal medical facilities and jobs already challenge our community and so it would be counter-productive to “getting these new homeless men back on their feet.” Her passionate resilience left the community visibly inspired to take action. She urged the audience to voice their opinion to the Mayor and to “keep the pressure on.” After her speech, the immortal words of the late, great Tom Petty came to mind- “We won’t back down.” Next up, with a rallying cry worthy of a Founding Father, Assembly District Leader Lew M. Simon kicked off a record-breaking number of public speakers attending a CB14 meeting—all of whom seemed to have the singular message—a united Rockaway in the face of government indifference. “I’m worried. The City constantly lies. But don’t be frightened. We pay taxes. If we stick together, we will win.” Simon cited the Beach 65th Street shelter as a perfect example of “City Hall’s lies.” Simon said, “We were promised pedophiles would not be living there, but registered sex offenders currently reside blocks away from our top, local schools.” Simon urges the community to take action by calling Sterling National Bank at (845)369-8040 because they granted a $1.8 million mortgage to 226 Beach 101 LLC, thereby enabling them to buy the building and make it into a homeless shelter without feedback from our community. O R G brought attention to a popular proposal in state legislature geared to raising subsidies for people at risk for eviction. Subsidies are currently fro-

Indeed, if fewer people are evicted, this is a positive way to decrease the homeless crisis, citywide. JK Canepa from the Sane Energy Project brought an equally-essential environmental issue to our attention regarding the Williams Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) pipeline. According to Canepa, “The Williams NESE pipeline would cost National Grid customers over a billion dollars for fracked gas, a potent greenhouse gas, as bad for the climate as coal.” Further, “local fracking will amplify climate change, release toxins buried under the sea floor, adversely affect shellfish, marine mammals, birds and fish.” Sane Energy urges the Rockaway community to contact Governor Cuomo to put his “Green New Deal” into action. After the minutes from CB14’s January 8 meeting were approved, the board informed us that they personally presented some of the community’s key concerns at the borough budget hearings last week to bring further attention to our specific issues. Highlights taken from the budget that had already been approved and submitted to City Council include: the design and funding for the widening of Rockaway Beach Boulevard from Beach 62nd Street to Beach 32nd Street; sand replenishment funding; safety fencing on Seagirt Boulevard between 32nd and 26th Street; additional summer-detail police officers to accommodate the large influx of seasonal visitors (250k per sunny summer weekend); a rebuild of the median and crosswalk

with traffic light by the new developments between Beach 9th and Beach 5th Street; an additional, more eastern, ferry stop; and a plan for additional schools and libraries to accommodate the thousands of affordable housing units proposed in Rockaway. The board also noted that the “hotel” on Beach 44th Street is not a hotel; it is a temporary shelter without opportunity for community involvement and advisory. The meeting ended with an informative presentation from The Waterfront Alliance. The Waterfront Alliance is deeply concerned with resilience to flooding, ecological health, community access to the waterfront and community involvement in its development. The Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines (WEDG) is a great tool that can be used to make sure that all projects along the waterfront are developed in a way that is resilient to flooding, ecologically sound, and community driven. Before leading the service, Chaplain John Fiore spoke with passion, about his connection to each service. “Here’s a guy that wore the uniform and throughout the misfortune of his life, he now has no family, no friends, nobody. If we didn’t intervene on this, he’d be in Potter’s Field in a hole with 15 or 20 other bodies and no one to speak for him, no headstones, no honor, nothing. That’s not exactly what he had in mind when he raised his right hand and said to this country, ‘I’ll defend you,’” Fiore said. “As Chaplain, I handle the prayers for these services, but I wouldn’t think of doing anything else. On my last breath, I’d be here first. We become his family. We all raised our hand, some of us were involved in combat, and I’m thankful to be alive. I

look at my family every time I come home from one of these funerals and I thank God that I have someone that will take my flag and come visit me. So now this gentleman will have someone to be there for him in a place where we all congregate. This is a brotherhood. It goes beyond family. Our lives depended on this guy. He deserves more than the 15 guys he’d be buried with on Hart Island, and today he gets it.” Lombardi’s funeral was the 73rd of its kind that the Queens County American Legion has participated in over the past decade. At the end of the service, several members in attendance approached the casket and either saluted or kissed it, with many saying, “Farewell Comrade” to their fellow soldier. Following the service at the George Werst Funeral Home, the soldier’s casket is placed in a hearse and taken to Calverton National Cemetery in Long Island, followed by a procession of American Legion members, VVA members and others. They’re met by members of the Patriot Guard motorcycle group and an honor guard at the cemetery. There, another small ceremony is held at an outdoor chapel, complete with the playing of taps, and

guys that do these efforts. This is what the American Legion does. We take care of other veterans. It’s almost like our own version of the unknown soldier. This is the epitome of what it means to be a part of the American Legion,” Ingram said. Indigent veteran funerals are not just open to American Legion members. Anyone is welcome to attend the ceremony, typically held the second Wednesday of each month at 9:30 a.m. at the George Werst Funeral Home on Cooper Avenue in Glendale. Rockaway Beach, West Coast Rockaway Beach isn’t much of a town at all, and the beach is barely a smidgen of what New York’s Rockaway offers. The small area, just seven miles from San Francisco, offers a few shops, a restaurant and a hotel that bare the Rockaway name, along Rockaway Beach Avenue. And the beach, although visually beautiful, and a place with more than enough rocks to justify the “Rock” in Rockaway, is no more than five blocks long. But worth a visit if you’re ever in town.

Those who live here know there’s only one true Rockaway Beach. The one The Ramones wrote a whole song about getting to. But it isn’t the only one. My friend that lives in San Mateo, California was driving along Highway 1, giving me a tour of the Pacific Coast, when I spotted a big blue sign with a familiar name. Almost by fate, a girl from Rockaway Beach, New York, was led to one of the west coast’s versions: Rockaway Beach in Pacifica, California. I had heard there was a Rockaway Beach in California, but had no idea how close it was to where I was visiting during my first-ever visit to the state, until we passed by the sign. I immediately asked my friend to make a U-turn. I needed to visit Rockaway Beach. Now, Rockaway Beach, Cali. isn’t nearly as impressive as New York’s. Even the saleswoman in the one giftshop where I stopped, in hopes of

finding a souvenir, said so. I west coast Rockaway. I purbrowsed around Pedro Point chased the magnet, while the Sirens giftshop, looking for woman explained that their anything that said Rockaway Beach, California on it, only to come up empty and having to ask the saleswoman for help. She pointed to a single magnet bearing the name with a surfer on it, saying the store specifically started making them because those from Rockaway Beach, New York would stop in looking for souvenirs of the

Silence, Solitude, The Future By Kathy Pastina

It seems everywhere we look these days there is new research on healthy aging. I am not in the medical field, but this subject is near and dear to my heart. My parents did not go “gently into that goodnight,” as Dylan Thomas, the poet and writer, exclaimed in his famous poem. Some would believe that this is an inevitability as we age, but it is not. Taking care of my parents inspired me to live a life which hopefully will give me better odds to remain vital and resil-

ient in mind, body and spirit throughout my life. The time to think about our future is built into this very precious moment. Mindfulness meditation helps us to turn inward to be fully conscious and present in this moment, linking the breath and the body to find peace and connectedness. The greatest threat to our faith and our inner peace is DISTRACTION! We are constantly distracted! We think on average 60,000 thoughts a day! Our minds and brains are exhausted from the steady stream of the never-ending news cycle

with our technology, we don’t know how to turn off. This creates stress and anxiety and as a result we’re more likely to get sick. We all have a certain amount of stress in our lives, but we are seeing an unprecedented amount of depression as we race to keep up with the constant news cycle. We never stop to self-care. By stopping to be in the present moment, taking a deep breath connecting with the inner spirit, we can find some measure of relief from our discursive mind that seems to cycle on a constant loop of gloom and doom. Meditation is a practice of sitting, being still and focusing on the breath, then graduating to adding a beautiful affirmation of love and compassion which reconnects us to ourselves, building resilience which can be transformational in our lives. Research has quantified the benefits of meditation. Every major religion or spiritual practice has prayer and meditation. They didn’t need quantitative proof back five thousand years ago. Practitioners knew then

The Rockaway Times and now that being still and allowing this time of silence and solitude quieted the heart, soul and mind, calming our reactive minds and cultivating our inner landscape towards peace. When we come to sit in meditation, we can soften the edges around our aggressive, negative minds. Schools are using it to rewire students’ brains to help with focus and concentration. The medical community is now incorporating this practice into the wellness plan of patients, literally using it as a prescription to heal. East is meeting the west and research shows meditation increases the gray matter in our brain, helps reduce depression, anxiety, tension, pain and improve calmness, sleep and overall wellbeing. They say it slows down aging! Now there’s an anti-aging tool! By sitting in meditation, we come to recognize and love that spark of universal essence of being within us, so we can begin to heal ourselves, then radiate that love out to others. May you awaken to the light and love within.

Hepatitis C (HCV) is a viral infection of the liver. It appears in media ads often now that direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical advertising is allowed in the U.S. Seventy-five to 85 percent of those infected will go on to develop a chronic hepatitis C infection which can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer, often necessitating a liver transplant. It often causes no symptoms until cirrhosis appears, so the CDC recommends HCV blood testing for individuals who meet at least one of the following criteria: a history of IV drug use, a blood transfusion or organ transplantation before 1992, use of a blood product to treat a bleeding disorder before 1987, date of birth between 1945 and 1965, history of kidney dialysis, H.I.V. positive status, and a history of a mother who was infected with HCV.

HCV causes chronic liver inflammation which causes scarring, eventually leading to cirrhosis. Symptoms of cirrhosis include yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), dark tea-colored urine, easy bleeding or bruising, swelling of the legs and abdomen, enlargement of blood vessels in the stomach and esophagus, which can cause catastrophic bleeding, and enlargement of the spleen. By far the most common causes of HCV infection are transfusion of infected blood or blood products and intravenous drug use. Transmission by contaminated tattoo needles is also a possibility, so anyone seeking to get a tattoo should choose the tattoo parlor wisely. Transmission by sexual contact is rare unless the contact was rough enough to cause bleeding. Treatment of viral infections like HCV and H.I.V. have made astounding advances in the last five years

or so. Treatment of HCV used to involve weekly injections of interferon and other medications that strengthened the immune system, but did not directly target the virus. The treatment was often unsuccessful and caused many side effects. In 2014, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of the first HCV treatment that combined two medications from a new class of drugs called the direct-acting antivirals. Two examples of this new class of drugs that directly attack the virus are Harvoni and Sovaldi. With this new class of drugs, sustained virologic response, or the inability to detect the virus in the blood, is not just possible but very likely. These medications are taken orally with minimal side effects. Medically, almost everyone with HCV should be treated. The problem is the cost, and whether the patient’s health

insurance will cover it. When first introduced in 2014, the cost of the new drugs was in excess of $100,000. Since there are 3.5 million U.S. residents living with HCV, treating everyone right away would have overwhelmed the U.S. health care system financially. Fortunately, the costs of treatment are declining, and more insurers are covering their use, plus there are co-payment assistance programs to help those who are either uninsured or underinsured. Previous infection does not provide immunity, so someone who undergoes successful treatment may become re-infected if they revert to IV drug use. And, if you have or have had HCV, it is important not to share items like razors and toothbrushes, and keep these items, and other items like sanitary products, away from children. Recently I was laid up for quite some time due to an injury sustained when I almost broke my leg when it fell off the ironing board while I was attempting to iron my pants. My infirmity left me with little else to do other than spend hours online chuckling at the political fiction being passed off as actual news by the various media outlets where the

truth goes to die. Now don’t get me wrong. I am not saying all politicians are liars. For example, take Marion Barry, the former Mayor of Washington D.C. — one of the most honest politicians I have ever seen who once said, “Outside of the killings, Washington has one of the lowest crime rates in the country.” Alas, courageous (if somewhat unenlightened) honesty like Marion Barry’s is the exception rather than the rule. Usually watching this political tripe only serves to bring about a mindset similar to a coma, but just recently I watched in awe as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 29-year-old bartender from the Bronx who has been a member of Congress for two whole months, took control of an entire political party with her New Green Deal policy, which includes a 10year commitment to convert

100 percent of the power demand in the United States to clean, renewable and zero-emission energy sources. And to upgrade all existing buildings to meet energy efficiency requirements, and to expand high-speed rail so broadly that most air travel would be rendered obsolete, ensure guaranteed employment for all, as well as a guaranteed salary for all those who are unable or unwilling to work. Oh yeah, there is also a caveat recommending that the vast number of farting cows be dramatically reduced. Some bean counters worked out the cost of this New Green Deal as some $93 trillion over ten years. I then watched as a myriad of veteran elected leaders rushed to voice their support for this “udder” madness. I could only think of the words of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (aka Mark Twain) who once said,

“Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on, or by imbeciles who really mean it.” In light of the above “udder” madness, I am hereby announcing that I am officially throwing my hat into the political ring seeking election to the Office of the President of the United States in the 2020 election. Please be assured that my decision was not made without much serious research and reflection. For instance, I knew that I would need a catchy campaign slogan. Back in 1900, William McKinley went with “Let Well Enough Alone!” and in 1924 Calvin Coolidge espoused, “Keep Cool with Coolidge!” In 1928, Herbert Hoover went with “A Chicken in Every Pot and a Car in Every Garage!” Dwight Eisenhower went with “I like Ike!” back in 1952 and Continued on page 27

Filing Your 2018 Taxes? Here’s What You Should Know By Kami-Leigh Agard

The 2019 nail-biting tax season is here, and with the sweeping changes made with the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, passed by Congress in 2017, many are confused as to what to expect in their refund. The Rockaway Times turned to Araneo Tax and Financial Services’ Brian Gallagher, who has over 30 years professional tax experience as an enrolled agent and financial consultant. Gallagher pulled no punches in giving the facts as to what folks should expect in 2019. So before you start planning that dream vacation or making renovations to your home, the Q & A below will give you a dose of reality. RT: With the government shutdown earlier this year, will be there be a delay in receiving tax funds?

Gallagher: No. As far as we know, there will be no delay. In fact, the IRS is posting time frames based on when you submit your return and when to expect your refund as a direct deposit or mail out. For info, visit: www.irs.gov/individuals/refund-timing RT: How will the new tax law affect not just refunds, but withholdings during the year? Gallagher: The government tried to make the new tax law a little bit simpler, but I don’t know if they succeeded. They cut the tax bracket rates and took away some deductions. In my opinion, it’s very random what they did. The crucial change with deductions is the capping on real estate and state and local taxes, otherwise known as SALT. The SALT

deduction allows taxpayers of high-tax states to deduct local tax payments on their federal tax returns. Basically, in past years a person could itemize their deductions based on whatever their real estate, state or city taxes numbers were. Now, all three of those numbers are capped at $10K, meaning the cumulative total cannot go over $10K. So now people who used to deduct a total of $30K, can only take $10K. And what’s really egregious about it is a single person still has that $10K, while a married couple, with both spouses working, together can still only deduct $10K. It’s ridiculous. Also, they got rid of a lot of job-related expenses, which hurts specific people, who for example, travel a lot for work, and were able to deduct their mileage. Now, they can no longer do that. Only

people who are self-employed or work as freelancers can continue to make those kinds of deductions, but if you are working for a company, you can no longer do that. Charitable contributions were left alone. Mortgage, which is usually the largest deduction, was pretty much left alone with the exception that they lowered the cap on it. Now $750K is the most you can deduct on a mortgage, when previously it was a lot more on that. RT: What about the tax rates? Gallagher: Previously they had a 10 percent tax rate, a 15 and a 25, now it’s changed to 12, 22, 24 and it goes up from there. Another change is that they doubled the standard deduction. ent would have the option of taking the standard deduction or itemize it, whichever was higher. Itemized deductions would be state taxes, mortgage, charitable contributions and medical. But now, they doubled that, meaning that a lot of people who itemized in the past, will see that their standard deduction is higher than the itemized. I think this goes back to the government trying to make things a bit simpler, which it is for a lot of taxpayers, who now don’t have to worry about itemizing. However, it does cause some problems because the government doubled the standard deduction, while simultaneously taking away the personal and dependent exemptions. So each of those exemptions worth $4K are now gone. So, if you have four kids, you lose $16K in dependent exemptions. Now depending on how old your kids are, you may make that up with the Child Tax Credit (CTC), as the government has extended the credits. For example, if your child is under age 17, the CTC is now doubled from $1K to $2K. One good change they made is that in the past, if you had a reasonable salary, like from $100K to $125K, you made too much to get the $1K CTC, but now, they raised the salary cap to receive the CTC to $400K. Meaning that almost everyone is able to get the CTC if their children are under age 17. RT: Is there any silver lining to these new tax laws?

Gallagher: Well for one, the new tax form is half a page. I guess this was the government trying to make the process of filing easier. Also, in general, most people, did get a tax cut. So if your salary was exactly the same in the last year and you had very simple deductions, you got a slight, not major tax cut. However, I’m sure everyone has seen in the media that refunds have significantly gone down. That may

The Rockaway Times be true, but people need to understand that’s only half the equation because your refund is totally a function of whatever you paid in during the year in withholdings. Here’s an example: Let’s say your tax liability, what you should have paid into Uncle Sam, went down $1K this past year, it means you broke even, but if your withholdings changed by $2K, meaning you got an extra $150 to $175 in your pay check, that means your withholdings changed by $2K. So if your withholdings changed more than your tax cut, guess what? You still got a tax cut but your refund goes down. Everyone looks forward to their refund, but you have to remember that with the new tax cuts, you got more money in your take-home. So folks need to look at their pay stubs, and see that if they were taking more money home, meaning less taxes were taken out during the year, so obviously their refund would be less. It’s simple math, and a lot of people don’t want to deal with it. RT: What should people do if they can’t pay the taxes that they owe? Is it wise to pay with a credit card? Gallagher: If you can’t pay, people should contact the IRS and NYS State and arrange a payment plan, and of course, you will be charged interest, so this why I encourage my clients to save up during the year, if they know they are going to have to pay out at tax time. And as far as credit cards, unless you are very savvy, I definitely don’t advise it. Not only are you paying the IRS back, but you are paying a 20 percent plus interest rate for what you charged. Unless you can pay the total balance at the end of the month, I don’t advise it. RT: Anything else people should know? Gallagher: Don’t wait to file. And if you don’t like the outcome this year, make sure to avoid a repeat by updating your withholding with your employer.

September 20, 1956 – February 26, 2019 Eileen Quinn was a lifelong Breezy Point resident. She passed away on February 26, after a courageous battle with cancer. She’s survived by her husband, Patrick; son, Shaun and daughter, Allana; her sisters, Bernadine Whalen and Jeanne Norman; her seven nephews, Keith, Johnny, Patrick, Conor, Seamus, Charlie and Tommy; five nieces, Kerin, Sondra, Kathleen, Jean Marie, and Colleen; grandnieces, Samantha, Kimberly, and Ivy and grandnephews Ryan, Tommy, Rj, and Frankie. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends. Donations can be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation in memory of Eileen Quinn.
