Off Duty Officer Shot on Beach 62nd Street By Katie McFadden
Just hours after a vigil for NYPD Detectives Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora, in front of the 100th Precinct on Tuesday, February 1, officers of the 100th Precinct responded to a call of another officer shot on Beach 62nd Street and Beach Channel Drive. After being shot in the shoulder, the off-duty officer is expected to survive, and the suspects have been apprehended. According to the NYPD, at around 10:18 p.m., a 22-yearold rookie officer was on his way to work at the 63rd Precinct in Brooklyn when he was stopped at a red light at Beach 62nd Street and Beach Channel Drive. Two suspects, 19-year-old Chad Collie and an 18-year-old Jayare Robinson, allegedly approached the officer’s personal vehicle while it was stopped, and one tapped on the vehicle with a firearm. The officer got out of his vehicle and was shot in
the shoulder by one of the suspects. The officer returned fire but did not strike the suspects. The suspects fled. Officers from the 100th Precinct heard the gunfire and responded to the scene while a description of the suspects was shared over police radio. Police saw two suspects fitting the description at Beach 59th Street and attempted to stop them. The suspects fired the gun toward the police, striking the bumper of their unmarked car. The officers did not return fire but were able to apprehend the suspects on foot. A .38 caliber handgun that was stolen from Los Angeles was recovered at the scene, police sources said (Pictured). Charges are pending. According to the NYPD, the officer was transported by police vehicle to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. He was in stable condition and undergoing surgery. The officer is expected to survive. Hours after hosting the vig-
il for Detectives Rivera and Mora across from the 100th Precinct on Tuesday, Councilwoman Joann Ariola responded to Jamaica Hospital, where she was part of a latenight press conference alongside Mayor Eric Adams. In a social media post, the councilwoman wrote, “Tonight another officer was shot. I am at Jamaica Hospital standing with our law enforcement saying enough is enough. Please continue to pray for the NYPD.” Senator Joe Addabbo released a statement the morning after the shooting, saying, “As New York was preparing to lay to rest Police Officer Wilbert Mora — who was shot and killed last month — another cop was shot in Rockaway. Luckily, the off-duty
officer survived this horrific ordeal, and the suspects were apprehended by the brave cops of the 100th Precinct. We need to do a better job as a city, state, and nation on keeping guns out of the hands of criminals because we cannot continue to hear stories of our police officers and citizens being shot. I will work with my colleagues in government on all levels to help stop this gun violence.” The officer shot on Tuesday night was the sixth NYPD officer shot so far this year.

Descent Because alleged travel columnists Lazer Lou and Bob, (Travels with Bob) Nesoff, haven’t sent so much as a postcard from the road, I had to fill the void. Last column, I spent the whole time complaining about the cold I couldn’t escape. Well, when the cold turned to snow between Oklahoma City and Amarillo, I turned into a southerner who can’t drive with an inch of the white stuff on the ground. Nobody could! Trucks, 18-wheelers, went skidding and sliding before toppling over. Traffic stopped. There wasn’t much choice since five trucks laid on their side across the two-lane high-
Page 5

way. And for the first twenty minutes it felt like a relief to be stuck and not driving like it was the luge. It’s not like you can get off these two-lane ice tracks—the next exit is 40 miles. This is Texas after all. Most states have a Welcome or Visitor’s Center within a couple of miles of entering the state. When I crossed into Texas the sign said, Visitor’s Center: 100 miles. Everything is big in Texas including the nothingness. What the sign was really saying is there ain’t much to see or visit for the next 100 miles. I’d driven 2,000 miles to get away from the Rockaway arctic,
but it chased me like a bill collector until New Mexico. And now you’re dying to know about Carlsbad Caverns. They give you an option of walking into the Natural Entrance or taking the elevator. The only workout I’d gotten for the past few days was the keister krush, so I opted for the winding steps into the cavern. Ever walk down 80 flights of stairs? And not being able to see where you’re stepping? Yeah, you descend 800 feet as you work your way through stalactites and stalagmites (one grows up, one grows down). The walkway is smooth enough so you know you won’t twist an ankle, but it’s too dark to see your feet, so you walk every step of the way in blind trust. My phone flashlight app didn’t work if you’re about to ask. The mineral formations, and nooks and crannies, were illuminated but it was like walking three miles to the bathroom with just a night light on. Fans of the March of the Wooden Soldiers will recall Barnaby’s cave hideout. There were definitely some times I thought I’d see Tom Tom and Little Bo
Peep. You walk and you walk and you start asking yourself two things: how many stalactites and stalagmites is a man supposed to see before he gets bored? And two, have you walked too far to turn around? The answers are: Not Many and Yes. Three miles into this dark trek you come to a fork in the road with a sign: Shortcut To Elevator 0.5 miles. The Big Room 1 mile. Sweating enough to start my own stalagmite, I headed for the elevator. I’d just walked three miles through a cave, but my first hint of claustrophobia struck when I got on the elevator. We had 80 stories to go up. And you know it’s not like most elevators, where they can fetch you from another floor if there’s a problem. It didn’t help when some young guys started joking about the ascent. I wanted to scream Shut The F Up. But I’m suave and debonair and manned up and suffered in silence. All in all, it was better than Amarillo. Next stop, Columbus, New Mexico, three miles from the Mexican border.

Far Rockaway Teen Library Reopens The Far Rockaway Teen Library is finally back open. After being closed in March 2020 due to the pandemic, the teen library located at 2002 Cornaga Avenue reopened to the public on Monday, January 31. The center, originally established in 2008, is designed exclusively for teens, many of whom have been experiencing unprecedented isolation since the beginning of the pandemic. The reopened space will offer expanded teen-friendly programming, including a series of podcast production workshops and DJing classes, which will initially be offered virtually, until the Library resumes in-person programming. In the upcoming weeks, the Teen Library is also planning to launch an app development pro-
gram. The center has a dedicated homework space and computer area with free printing (up to 20 pages a day). It aims to stimulate creative thinking, encourage civic engagement and – with the guidance of youth counselors and teen librarians – helps teens explore their school and career options. “Now more than ever, teens need an inclusive space where they can access a wealth of resources, feel comfortable and connect with other young people,” Teen Center Site Coordinator, Eyitami Oyarijivbie said. “We are very excited to welcome young people back to the Far Rockaway Teen Library and offer them a safe and inspiring environment.” The Teen Library will continue to provide its
robust virtual programming, including Youth Justice Court, workshops on subjects ranging from technology, entrepreneurship and financial literacy to creative arts and health and wellness, college readiness and job search resources, as well as a book club. It will also offer grab-and-go kits, containing items like craft supplies, bookmarks,
and writing journals to engage teens in projects outside the Library. Prior to the start of the pandemic, the Far Rockaway Teen Library served approximately 33,000 young adults a year. The Far Rockaway Teen Library will be open Monday through Friday from 2:30 to 6 PM. As the center welcomes teens back to the building, QPL continues
to follow COVID-19 protocols to protect its staff and customers. Teens will need a library card to enter the space and they will need to reserve a time slot to use gaming systems and computers. To make a reservation, go to: https://reservation.queenslibrary.org Reservations can be made a week in advance for up to 45 minutes per activity. Walk-in reservations can be made at the main desk if slots are available. The Far Rockaway Teen Library is adjacent to the Far Rockaway Swing Space, located at 1003 Beach 20th Street. The main Far Rockaway Library at 1637 Central Ave. is closed during the construction of a new building, tentatively expected to open to the public by the end of the year.

Beach 116th Residents & Business Owners Ask Army Corps to Relocate By Katie McFadden
This week, a petition started being circulated around businesses and residential areas around Beach 116th Street, requesting that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) relocate their staging area from Beach 116th Street. After last summer, USACE set up shop from Beach 117th to Beach 115th, placing the large boulders for groin construction along the beach. Some are now expressing concerns that this staging area could impact local businesses if it continues to be used during the summers, and are now asking USACE to consider relocating. The petition, started by residents of the beachfront Ocean Grande, claims this area will be used through 2024, which could make their beach inaccessible until 2025. The petition goes on to list reasons
why the staging area should be moved such as impacts on local businesses on Beach 116th Street with beachgoers opting to go to other areas, and disturbances to residents of the Ocean Grande and Hampton Houses, including with vibrations and dust particles from the construction area. The original groin construction schedule was expected to end mid-summer 2024, but the USACE contractor has been ahead of schedule. Contract 2, which includes sand replenishment and new dune
construction along the length of the beach is expected to begin sometime this year. Asked if Beach 116th would be used through 2024, Project Manager Dan Falt said, “I can say right now that we will probably need the staging/delivery area at B116th and/or B142nd at least for work this summer. As always, we’ll work to keep any beach closures as small as possible. We still don’t know the schedule for Contract 2 work, and when the dredge will come, so there are many variables that can impact the overall schedule. We still need access to build groins at B130, B125, B120, B115, and B110.” Asked if there were any alternatives to Beach 116th, Falt explained why that area is being used, saying, “We generally don’t want the trucks to cross areas where the boardwalk is elevated, and cross the new, specially cast, boardwalk sections.
This limits us to areas with atgrade crossings on poured in place slabs or no boardwalk at all. This limits us to B19, B116th, and any street end from B127149th.” In a post on Friends of Rockaway Beach, the response left some continuing to ask why the staging area couldn’t be moved over another block or two once the machinery has crossed the boardwalk. To this, Falt says, "The street trucks can’t drive on sand, so a gravel road would need to be built." Others suggested beachgoers taking public transportation to Beach 116th could simply move another block or two. The residents of the Ocean Grande are continuing discussions with USACE on this matter. For more information about the petition asking to relocate the staging area, reach out to Elda Vale at rockymountains117@ hotmail.com

Rockaway Honors NYPD Officers Rivera & Mora By Katie McFadden
On Tuesday, February 1, on the eve of late Detective Wilbert Mora’s funeral, Councilwoman Joann Ariola organized a candlelight vigil across from the 100th Precinct to honor Detectives Mora and Jason Rivera, and to show support for the local precinct. A crowd of police officers, firefighters, local leaders and residents, gathered in front of Peninsula Library, where candles and small blue lines flags were distributed to attendees. Councilwoman Ariola opened the vigil saying, “To see the outpouring of love here tonight for this precinct from officers and community members and elected officials and representatives and our fire department and volunteer fire department, it is something that warms the human soul because the human soul is a light from God and may it be your will, God, that the souls of Detective Jason Rivera and Police Officer Wilbert Mora enjoy eternal life in your peace. And we do this here because each and every day, I know you put on your uniforms and you don’t know what’s going to happen that day. Tomorrow is not promised to any of us, and we want to thank you for putting those uniforms on and we want you to know we have your back, and we just came from a meeting at City Hall,
and believe me, City Hall has your back too and you’re going to start to see that.” Reverend Father Jeremy Canna of Blessed Trinity Parish and Rabbi Tsvi Selengut of the Belle Harbor Jewish Center were then asked to lead prayers as candles were lit. “There’s an old saying where, if you have a room that’s very dark, if you light even the smallest candle in that room, you can bring light to a very dark place and although the times now feel dark and tragic, there is so much light here and not just from the candles,” Rabbi Selengut said. Deputy Inspector Carlos Fabara, commanding officer of the 100th Precinct, then said a few words. “Officers Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora were both in their 20s when their lives were snatched away from them. When I think about that, my blood boils. They were babies—their best years still ahead of them. To think of all the good times, all the success and achievement, all the love and experiences that were taken away from them, it makes me angry. Whatever you do when you go home, take a minute to appreciate it because these two young officers gave that up for you. Whether it's calling someone you love or just relaxing on the couch, they gave that up for you. They will never see another sunset. They
will never listen to another song. And they will never feel another warm embrace. They sacrificed those things for each and every one of you,” he said. ”That two people so young could be cut down so senselessly is a terrible reflection of what humanity is capable of but luckily we don’t have to experience the worst of humanity because we live under a blanket of protection. We live under the protection
of brave young men like Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora. Two young men that dedicated their lives to protecting the citizens of this city.” For those who missed the vigil, Broad Channel is holding an event called Back the Blue Saturday on Saturday, February 5 at 3 p.m. All are welcome to line Cross Bay Boulevard and wave American and police flags in support of all members of law enforcement.
SFDS 8th Grade & WISH Support the 100th Precinct
The 8th grade at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy recently collaborated with Rockaway Wish to show appreciation for the 100th Precinct. Lynn Duffy ordered the blue ribbons and the 8th graders sold them. The students went to the precinct, decorated outside and then met with Commanding Officer Fabara. The students raised enough money to also send meals to each shift at the precinct to thank them for their efforts in our community. To advertise in THE ROCKAWAY TIMES call 718-634-3030

VOTING MAPS MOVE CLOSE TO APPROVAL The more things change… The failure of an independent commission to reach consensus on new voting districts across the State, opened the door for Albany Democrats to configure maps that will heavily favor their party. State Senator Michael Gianaris, who chairs the legislative redistricting task force, told the New York Times, “This is a very Democratic state, let’s start there. It’s not surprising that a fairly drawn map might lead to more Democrats getting elected.” Governor Kathy Hochul is expected to support the new district lines. Redistricting fights and charges of gerrymandering are happening across the country as new lines are drawn as a result of the 2020 census. If the current proposal passes in the New York Legislature, the changes for Rockaway will be relatively minor. The congressional district will contin-
ue to have one representative in Congress, the seat currently held Congressman Gregory Meeks. On the New York Senate side, the peninsula essentially gets cut in two. From the ocean, the line runs down Beach 94th Street, makes a left turn for one block to Beach 95th Street and then cuts over the Cross Bay Bridge, capturing Broad Channel and Howard Beach. This new district is not drastically different than the current one, repped by Joe Addabbo. Similarly, the east side of the peninsula, now repped by James Sanders Jr., essentially remains intact. The Assembly Districts 23 and 31, now represented by Stacey Pheffer Amato and Khaleel Anderson, offers a zigzag, byzantine map with parts of the peninsula on the east end carved up in a way that defies easy explanation. Rockaway Farmers Market at Beach 60th Street By Jeanne DuPont, RISE Executive consecutive Saturdays, from cards, SNAP, and WIC vouch- destrian use and host commuten o’clock in the morning to ers, and no resellers, cooper- nity events, including a driveDirector
Far Rockaway historically has been a food desert, lacking easy access to a variety of affordable, fresh, organic vegetables and produce. But that is all coming to a halt this spring, summer, and fall! Saturday, May 28, 2022, will be the kickoff date of the Rockaway Farmers Market @ Beach 60th Street. For twenty-two
three o’clock in the afternoon, regional farmers and food producers will have the opportunity to sell their organic and nonorganic produce, eggs, cheese, pickles, herbs, mushrooms, honey, jams, juices, seafood, meat, flowers and plants, compost and soil, and baked goods to residents and visitors of our beloved peninsula. The farmers market will accept credit
atives, or vendors outside the local region will be permitted. Rockaway Farmers Market @ Beach 60th Street is part of a year’s long collaboration between RISE (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability & Equity) and the New York City Department of Transportation to pilot an area adjacent to the Beach 60th Street subway platform to activate the roadway for pe-
through farm share pickup, musical performances, public art installations, and COVID19 pop-up vaccination and test distribution site. Any regional farmers or food producers interested in participating must complete a questionnaire at riserockaway. org. Click on Programs, then on Community, and finally on Farmers Market.

Presents our
FAITH, HOPE & LOVE We are deep in the winter, holidays come and gone, all is quiet. Perhaps you have time. A welcome gift. Things tend to slow down in winter, become still, stop for a bit. What better time than for quiet introspection. With the new moon this week, we can take some time to focus within, bring awareness to the innermost parts of ourselves and awaken. Awaken to the heart and awaken to the mind. Observe what you find. What emotions are showing up? What thoughts are showing up? If some not so good emotions and thoughts are showing up, what can we do to change them? For some of these, it’s as easy as creating the opposite as an intention— kind of flipping the coin over. Of course, longterm we have to deal with and let go of them, but it’s a process and takes time. Accepting and knowing that, we can see that we will get there, not instantaneously, and in the meantime turn our minds and hearts to positives. The new moon period is of initiation, new beginnings, planting seeds. Yes, even in the dead of winter. Conscious effort to turn to all that is good as the emotions and thoughts arise. Science shows that good thoughts make good chemicals in our bodies that make us feel good. Same for good emotions. An act of generosity, for example, creates oxytocin which boosts up the mood and counteracts cortisol (stress hormone). And an act of kindness is a powerful suggestion to others. I recently saw a video in which a man gives a shirt to a homeless person, another man observing this gives a sand-
wich from his backpack, another woman gives him something else. Lots of oxytocin in that little area! Daily gratitude, kindness, generosity are amazingly beneficial to ourselves. The energy embodied because of these is limitless. It’s like a boomerang. . . you give but really you are feeding yourself and then creating an energy that shines forth. It is in this way of self-exploration, of turning to elevated emotions and positive thoughts, that we discover our place, our meaning in this life. It is in this way—connection to oneself— that we then discover the connection to other individuals, connection to humanity, connection to the universe. With that comes faith, hope and love. Faith, a deep trust, in the divine within each of us and the interconnectedness to all beings. Hope, a deep wish, for peace of mind and heart, and unification. Love, all we need. “Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe.” - Saint Augustine “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all the darkness.” - Desmond Tutu (I honor this spiritual teacher who passed last month.) “When we love, we always strive to become better than we are. When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too.” - Paul Coehlo May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you be compassionate. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2022 Natural Immunity
Dear Editor: Dr. Galvin’s article on antibody testing was informative about the complex science involved in defining immunity to viruses but equivocated on delving into the significant scientific debate about why the DC medical establishment has ignored natural immunity to Covid-19. As far as the biology goes, let’s put it simply: natural immunity has always been understood to be the most effective countermeasure to viral infection. Since the 1700s, when Edward Jenner first worked with smallpox vaccination, natural immunity has been a foundational aspect of vaccination strategy. Still, for some reason, the Fauci/DC contingent of the medical establishment decided to deemphasize the idea that natural immunity was a potent ally to the evolving treatment protocols for Covid-19. The Israeli study from 2021 involving over 30,000 patients confirmed that natu-
ral immunity in patients; “…affords longer lasting and stronger protection against infection (as compared to vaccination alone). https://www.medrxiv.org/conten t/10.1101/2021.08.24.21262415v1 Furthermore, despite clear scientific evidence of a well-defined risk stratification among the population, vaccination-for-all was the dominant strategy. A revealing fact was admitted to recently by the current CDC director Rochelle Walensky who stated that “…the overwhelming number of deaths, over 75%, occurred in people who had at least four co-morbidities…”. https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/cdc-directorsays-75-of-covid-19-deaths-hadfour-or-more-comorbidities That’s a big qualifier there, especially given the corollary that in the age group 0-20 the survival rate stands at 99.9987%. https://data.cdc.gov/NCHS/ Provisional-COVID-19-Deathsby-Sex-and-Age/9bhg-hcku/data So why has vaccination strategy not been changed accordingly, to treat those at actual risk? Moving forward two years and CDC epidemiologist Benjamin Silk states

the following on January 19, 2022 as reported by numerous press outlets: “…when Delta became predominant in this country, however, surviving a previous infection now provided greater protection.” Here’s a link to the Wall Street JournalarticlereportingonDr.Seller’s statements: https://www.wsj. com/articles/prior-covid-19-infection-offered-better-protection-than-vaccination-during-delta-wave-11642619009 And here’s a link to that CDC study: https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/ volumes/71/wr/mm7104e1.htm?s_cid=mm7104e1_w But wait...Dr. Fauci, and every medical bureaucrat on the government payroll told us that natural immunity was not to be discussed for this virus! This, despite the massive wave of the relatively mild Omicron variant of Covid-19 sweeping across the population and imparting natural immunity. From the biological perspective, it makes complete sense why natural immunity should be taken into account. The body’s exposure to the full virus allows our
The Rockaway Times immune cells to wrap themselves around the entire viral particle and all of its surface proteins, not just a single mutating spike protein as the current mRNA vaccination does. Dr. Harold Paez Curb Appeal Dear Editor: I feel Pico’s should remove their outdoor dining area to help relieve some of the parking and driving issues on Beach 129th. This dining area is obviously not being used now and even during the warmer temperatures was rarely used. So, I say to Pico’s, let’s remove this eye-sore and add some badly needed parking spots, on the block, for the community’s sake. Tom Last Blush Causing Dear Editor: Got to congratulate Kevin Boyle on his Boyleing Points column. He has a column that is witty, funny and practical. Kevin sees the world as it is with a lot of humor included. John Patrylo

Some local brokers imply that they have special access to a magic formula. A friend was recently promised a quick sale at Top Dollar, and a guaranteed Fast co-op approval of the buyer. I warned the friend about hocus pocus. Of course, the sale didn’t happen. The co-op was rented instead. Don’t be fooled – there is no magic solution for success. Some tools brokers use: Most brokers use advertisements in The Rockaway Times, open houses, signs, websites. Some brokers give out keychains. I give out pens. Most brokers utilize expensive internet websites. Most brokers have access to MLS. Some brokers know our
neighborhood better than others. My staff has over 200 years of residence in Rockaway and over 40 years of education beyond high school. We have sold over 400 homes. This includes at least one house on every street in Belle Harbor and Neponsit. This gives us knowledge of houses which can help make a difference. Some brokers spare no expense. I have advertised on 1010 WINS radio, and I sponsor many local organizations. Hocus pocus? Nope. It’s hard work, experience, intellect, and a big budget. Call me. he emphasized that prices are still appreciating because buyers are still active in the face of reduced inventory. The median (middle most, not the average) sales price rose 15% in December from a year ago to 358k. Cash sales represented 23% of all transactions, investment properties were at 17% of sales, and first-time home buyers took 30% of December sales. Thirty-year fixed rate mortgages are approximately 3.6% as of this writing. This costs $454/100k/month.

Beyond the Menu: Callie’s By Dan Guarino
With all of Rockaway’s variety, there’s always room for something more. That’s where Callie’s story starts. “The idea was to build a family-friendly, local takeout sandwich shop. It’s something the place was missing,” co-owner Brian Leary said. Together, partners Terence Mullin, Leary and Tom Callahan built just that at the corner of Beach 129th Street and Newport Avenue. Callahan, also the general manager, notes, “I’ve been in the business since I was a little kid. I was a busboy at age 13, at Aegean Isles in Brooklyn. At 16, I worked at Kennedy’s, doing the hand cut fries, and running the hot dog stand they used to have.” Leary added, “I’ve been an investor in businesses for 20 years, but not an operator.” “That’s true,” Mullin said. “Me and Brian were both in real estate. But this is my first go around with something like this.” “Terence is a foodie,” Leary chimed in, “He’s the mind behind the food.” Collectively, the trio know and frequent their share of local Rockaway spots. When asked, Rocco’s, Jamesons, Happy Jack’s, Bungalow Bar and many others fill out their list. “We’re very supportive of the local community,” Callahan says. It was while standing outside of one such establishment that Callie’s began to take shape. Leary said, “Tommy was on a mission to build a place, he was wanting to do this for a long time.” Exiting a pub one night, Mullin and Callahan noticed a property available down the block, across the street. Why not, they thought? There had previously been a stand-type restaurant, a nail salon, a panini place, and originally a multi-family house, there. “So, we worked with the landlord,” Leary notes. The plan was to build something new from the ground up. “This was Brian’s concept,” Callahan says. “We decided to make it just the kitchen (and or-

der area) building and outdoor space.” With spaciously spread benches, tables and outdoor seating options, “we have a lot of unique spots to sit” and “we planted a couple of hundred trees and shrubs,” Leary explains. “Our kitchen is where the original garage used to be.” Says Callahan, “It’s a very laid back, casual place. We’re very family-friendly, and dog friendly.” It’s probably one of the few places you can dine with your pet. Mullin points out they even have parking, a rarity on the often-congested commercial block.

As for the name, the partners tossed around a number of combinations with words like, “Roast,” “Beach” and “Carving Board.” Callahan credits friend JoAnn Engel with finding just the right fit. Thinking of Terence Mullin’s daughter, she said ‘Why not Callie’s?’ “Wow. That’s great!’ we thought. As Mullin is married to Callahan’s sister Christine, and Callie is derived from maiden-name ‘Callahan,’ it was a double fit. The shop’s chef, John Napoli, said, “And she works here. So, yes, you can order a Callie’s Sandwich from Callie at Cal-
lie’s.” The partners are quick to point to Napoli and their crew of 20-25, mostly local, for their success. Napoli explains, “Everything you’re eating here is fresh.” Having worked elsewhere, he says this is not always the case in other places. All their meats, for instance, are always fresh, never frozen. As for favorites, Napoli notes, there’s “definitely the roast beef, and the crispy chicken sandwich. Our salads are incredible. The variety we have is great. And you can get what we offer, or you can get it however you want. Everything on our menu is something we’ve made very carefully.” At Callie’s you can take-out, dine-in or have it delivered by Callie’s own delivery team. They do breakfast Friday to Sunday, 7-11 a.m., catering and even book events/private parties. Under bar manager Darren Corsey, Callie’s offers a full line of beverages including wine, beer, twisted tea, spiked sodas, and frozen cocktails. Among his many specialties, Corsey’s own Pumpkin Sangria is incredibly popular. Opening a new business is always hard enough though, especially during Covid. “It was very challenging for our staff, who were here every day, working,” recalls Callahan. Callie’s original open-dining space certainly helped with social distancing. All agreed, neighbors and other business owners were very supportive and welcoming. As Mullins says, “This is a very close-knit neighborhood.” They in turn have done their best to return the favor by hosting fundraisers, and events like murder mysteries and movies nights, complete with ice cream for the kids. They’re already looking to warmer weather and live music nights. Rich in savory tastes right down to their signature burgers, sandwiches, salads, fries and beverages, Callie’s has added their own special flavor to their corner of Rockaway. Photos by Dan Guarino.

Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
The history of medicine is a fascinating story. Take, for example, using sutures to close wounds. Suturing has been found in ancient cave paintings dating as far back as 30,000 B.C. with the use of “eyed needles.” In 1600 B.C., Galen of Pergamon, a renowned Greek surgeon, used catgut for the first time to suture gladiators’ torn or severed tendons. Catgut was made from twisted sheep or horse intestines. More recently, our Civil War produced many horrific injuries. Soldiers who received wounds to an arm or leg had the limb amputated. Many soldiers, if they survived their injuries and blood loss on the battlefield, died after amputation from infections, especially from gangrene. A Confederate surgeon, Dr. Hunter Holmes McGuire, who after
The Rockaway Times
Brief History Of Wound Closures the war became the president of the American Medical Association, amputated the left arm of General Stonewall Jackson. The primary suture material of that time was catgut, however, supplies of it were very low because of the huge numbers of casualties on both sides. One of Dr. McGuire’s assistants came up with the idea of using the skirt of a horse (the long coarse hair of a horse’s tail) as suture material. The problem was that the horse skirt hair is very thick and hard to manipulate, so the simple solution was to boil the hair, so it became softer and more manageable. They noticed a side effect of using boiled horsehair was a lower rate of wound infections, but it wasn’t until a decade later that a British surgeon named Sir Joseph Lister realized the benefits of antiseptic surgery. He published his findings in medical journals, in-
cluding the Lancet (a well-respected medical journal even today), only to be mocked and derided for his findings and ideas, including by Lancet. Lancet even warned readers about his ideas. But Dr. Lister applied Louis Pasteur’s advances in microbiology. He instituted the practices of wearing clean gloves, washing his hands before and after surgery, and washing the surgical instruments in a mild carbolic acid solution. An oral rinse named Listerine was named in honor of Dr. Lister and his discoveries. Another ancient wound closure technique involved the use of the giant African ant, Eciton burchelli. The ants were held parallel to the wound so they can bite down on the wound edges with giant claws and draw the wound closed. The holder then decapitated the ant, leaving the claws holding the wound together. Ugh, no thanks. Wires were
also used for wound closure, and the first to use staples for wound closure was a Hungarian surgeon in 1908, Dr. Humer Hultl. Krazy Glue was discovered in 1942 when scientists were trying to make clear plastic gun sights. The problem was that it stuck to everything, but it was used by battlefield medics in Vietnam, and was credited for saving many lives. Today, we have much more effective biologic glues for skin closure. Today, lasers can be used to weld wounds together and to quickly coagulate the wound and stop the bleeding. In the OR, electrocautery uses radiofrequency energy to “suture”, or coagulate small blood vessels, rather than tediously tying them off. Wound closure now does indeed have many options (but hold the ants, please). Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes.com

Testing For The Man I have been a high school and sometimes middle school English teacher for almost 25 years. During those 25 years, the New York State English Regents and the SAT have changed multiple times. I have sat through numerous professional developments and meetings discussing the changes and how to align your instruction for the exam. Each time we worked on this I would ask: We teach reading and writing, what are we changing? I am just a lowly teacher, not someone who sits at the Board of Regents in Albany and crafts the exam. After the film School of Rock came
out, I started to refer to the test makers as “The Man.” One of the things I have realized many years ago is that at the crux of education, the real issue is making money. The Man makes a lot of money when they change the exam because then you need to change the test prep books that assist with the instruction. The Man has cronies who also make a lot of money by giving professional development at an exorbitant cost to the city. In the early 2000s, the College Board announced that they were adding grammar to the exam and changing the score
from 1600 points to 2400. So, we got all new grammar books and made sure each day we did a “Do Now” practicing grammar. About a year later, I went to a college fair and the admissions counselors told me, “Oh we’re only looking at math and reading. We aren’t looking at the extra 800 points.” Okay, great, thanks. So, I stopped having the students complete the grammar and editing do now activity. The next year, the College Board went from 2400 back to 1600 and did not get rid of the grammar, they added it to the 800 points of the reading section. So they had two sections for the reading score: reading comprehension and writing and language. So, for math they divided it into two sections: math with no calculator and math with calculator. At first, I was so happy. These kids need to learn to do some math without a calculator (even though we have not made them do math without a calculator their entire high school career). However, when
I saw the math I was like….. what math is this and how can one do it without a calculator? I assumed the questions would be about maybe earning money in the stock market, or about commissions on sales? (Common core math stated more real life scenarios.) So here we are in January 2022 and the College Board has announced once again that they are changing the exam. Guess what? They are eliminating the math with no calculator section! So, I guess I will be attending more meetings and working on learning this new exam. Please do not be the person who emails me and says: This is why we need to get rid of standardized testing. It may not be perfect, but we need something that tests whether the students can read, write and complete math tasks. As parents, we cannot say that our children are not good test takers. They will have to take tests for almost every job I can think of so they need to start getting better at taking exams.

Pandemic Chicken in Crockpot By Sharon Feldman
I had most of these staples in the house. Trying to use what I have so I’m not out and about too often. Ingredients: 1 tablespoon EACH dried parsley, dried rosemary, dried parsley and dried oregano 2 pounds chicken pieces 1 medium onion, chopped 2 small carrots cut into ½” pieces ½ bag of frozen peas (or fresh) 1 -package sliced mushrooms 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 – 14-1/2 ounce can peeled whole tomatoes, drained and chopped Small can of tomato puree 1-2 tablespoons of tomato paste
Directions: Spray crockpot with oil or butter. Add the carrots and onions. Sprinkle a little salt over them and mix it. Season the chicken with all the seasonings and place on top of vegetables. In a medium bowl, mix the tomatoes, tomato puree and tomato paste together. Then pour mixture in and top the chicken with the mushrooms; cover. Cook on high heat for 4 hours Add the peas and replace cover for another 20 minutes or ½ hour. Taste the sauce. Add a little hot pepper flakes for a bit of a kick. I served this over mashed potatoes. Sometimes I use mashed cauliflower or pearl couscous. Enjoy ++ Remember … to reduce fat, remove the skin from the uncooked chicken pieces.

Wrestle Talk THE NON-COMPETE CLAUSE By Eric Jayden
So, this is a question when I first saw it in my emails, it immediately reminded me of how much I hate the "Non-Compete Clause" which is generally written in all WWE Talent Contracts, that once a talent is either released or in many cases, terminated from their contract, that talent cannot compete or work for any other promotions and/ or including MMA, Boxing or any type of fighting promotion for 90 days. I say this is B.S. and let's dive into it! In my humble opinion, I believe a Non-Compete Clause(s) should be illegal and here's why. First, no company in the world should have the ability to stop you from working in the profession you have chosen to be in, for any amount of time. I mean, who the blue hell gives them the right to stop you from
making money. What right does a company have to say you will not work anywhere for 90 days or we can sue you. Excuse me, but what if you have a family to support? What, if you have kids to feed or you have a mortgage payment, a car payment or your health insurance to pay and you can't make any or all of those payments because the WWE said so in the form of a
Non-Compete Clause. Does, the WWE own you? Well, if you ask CM Punk now AEW Superstar, when he challenged the WWE over his contract, his lawyer pretty much found a contract that made the talent the sole property of the WWE with no rights to do anything. Folks! This is wrong! This is not right! No one, no company, nobody should have the
right to stop anyone from making a living. If you ended your contractual obligations with said promotion or said promotion doesn't want to resign you then, that's it. You move on to your next endeavor and you continue making a living and making money, not wait the next 90 days until you can make your next paycheck. Non-Compete Clause(s) should be illegal and should not be used in any wrestling promotion when they are signing a talent to a contract. This is the land of the free. We should be free of constraints to affect your ability to make money. Pro Wrestling Performers deserve better! Before I forget, the topic of this week’s column was sent in as a question by Jason M. in Brooklyn Heights. Thank you for that great question! Keep sending those questions in to eavil183@yahoo.com and have a great weekend!
