On Sunday, February 7, America will celebrate the biggest football game of the season when the Carolina Panthers face the Denver Broncos in the 50th NFL championship. House parties are a popular choice, but chances are theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be catered by a local business or you may even spend the evening out at a local bar watching the game on one of several screens. There are several options to celebrate locally. You know what one of the biggest sporting events in America is really called, but due to strict trademark restrictions, advertisers cannot use the exclusive title of Sundayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s big game. You may see â&#x20AC;&#x153;Championship Gameâ&#x20AC;? or â&#x20AC;&#x153;Big Gameâ&#x20AC;? or â&#x20AC;&#x153;Football Specials,â&#x20AC;? or anything else that hints at Sundayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event without mentioning it. Stephen Colbert even went as far as to calling it the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Superb Owlâ&#x20AC;? one year. Sundayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s game will start at 6:30 p.m. and will be on CBS. Lady Gaga will kick it off with the National Anthem. Budweiser, Taco Bell, various car companies, Heinz and others will come up with pricey, creative commercials to entertain and sell their products in between the game. During halftime, Coldplay and BeyoncĂŠ will take the stage, and Rockaway will be celebrating in its own way. In the weeks leading up to the big game, local restaurants have been advertising catering specials, and there may still be time to put in your party orders before game day. Mexican restaurant Pico has a special on full and half trays of food and per person deals. Their specials include their popular Split Elotes, or corn on the cob with spices, chipotle aioli and cheese. A game wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be complete without wings. Rotten Tomatoes: Mother-Daughter Duo Caught in Stolen Credit Card Scheme You may want to check your bank and credit card statements. A local mom and daughter duo were recently arrested on several charges of grand larceny after allegedly stealing and using credit and debit card information from customers of a local eatery. On Monday, February 1, the credit card scheme of Deb-orah Colicchio, 58, and her daughter, Kayla, 17, came to an end when they were ar-rested at their Beach 123rd apartment and charged on several counts. The ladies were arrested based on three separate incidents of reported credit card theft. Soon after police arrived to make the arrest of the women on Monday, the young girl had barricaded herself and

her mother in the Beach 123rd Street apartment triggering a large police response. Once coaxed out of the home, the women were arrested and charged for several crimes in relation to three separate incidents of credit card theft. According to Detective Reyes of the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information for the NYPD, the three incidents in which a debit or credit card was compromised and used to make fraudulent transactions occurred on December 31, January 2 and January 6. In each instance, the older woman was charged with grand larceny in the 4th degree, criminal possession of stolen property in the 4th degree, scheme to defraud in the 2nd degree and criminal possession of stolen property in the 2nd degree. The younger female, Kayla, received all of the same charges, but due to

her actions during the arrest she received further charges of resisting arrest and obstruction of governmental administration. Sources say Kayla had obtained credit card information during her time working as the phone girl at Plum Tomatoes on Beach 129th Street. Victims noted that when placing an order over the phone, the receptionist had asked them to spell their name and provide all of the credit card information, including the security code on the back. Plum Tomatoes often employs young locals for simple jobs like delivery persons or phone receptionists, but this was the first incident in which an employee had ill intentions, according to the owners. They say the girl had been working at the restaurant since about June 2015. She was fired after the girl’s actions came to light in January.

The Rockaway Times reached out to Plum Tomatoes for a comment. A man, who would not confirm that he was the owner, said the 17-yearold girl had been working at the restaurant since about June to January. “When we got word of what was going on, she was fired immediately,” he said. The man claimed this was the first incident of this type for the restaurant. “We’ve been around for 30 years, not 30 days. This has never happened. We have this POS Credit Card System that doesn’t retain people’s private info purposely, which is by law. This 17-year-old girl was just hired to answer phones and take orders and unfortunately she had malice in her heart and she lied to some of the customers and stole their information. We

According to a report in The New York Post, City Councilman Eric Ulrich is being encouraged to run for mayor. GOP leaders Ed Cox, Queens leader Bob Turner and Joe Lhota, the 2013 candidate who lost to Bill de Blasio, are urging Ulrich, whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just turning 31, to give it a shot. Ulrich, who represents the west end of Rockaway, got considerable media coverage recently when he blasted City Hall for mismanaging snow removal in parts of Queens. We reached out to him but the best we got was a statement from a spokesperson: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Like so many New Yorkers, Councilman Ulrich is concerned about the future of our city. While he appreciates the encouragement of friends and supporters alike, he is not a declared candidate for Mayor at this time. His primary focus remains serving the needs of his constituents and fighting for New York Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s large and diverse Veterans community.â&#x20AC;?

Fifty Shades of Graybeards When somebody says to me “He was a young guy, like you,” I know I’m talking to somebody in their eighties or nineties. It’s all relative as they say. You’d think something called the Graybeard Dinner Dance would have slow motion bingo and music by Bread or Lawrence Welk. In fact, you’d think dinner was a stretch and that brunch would be a better idea. Graybeards come for doggie bags, not dinner, don’t they? And why do they call it a dance?

Rumor is they give out Life Alerts as table favors. When The Graybeards do The Worm it makes them want to shout. Yeah, shout I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Get Up! But it ain’t like that at all. See, the Graybeards name was a little tongue-in-cheek. When the guys started this thing they were in their mid-thirties and early forties. Barely out of their teen years. They weren’t doing shots of Geritol. (Wait, do they still make Geritol or is that only something only

my 80-year-old friends remember?). Anyway, they set up the do-good organization insistent upon a guiding principle: to have a good time doing good. Mission accomplished. But the funny thing is, the good times didn’t slow down with the increase in hip replacements. The once-young bunch of founders have been followed by new Graybeards who keep these Dinner Dances from becoming fancy naps. You don’t go expecting to see human pyramids. But I was either hallucinating or I really did see some guys get down on all fours and let other guys get on top on top of them. And then some gymnast climbed to the top of the human heap as DJ Teddy praised them and suggested more craziness. And these crazy kids in their forties and sheesh, some in their fifties, obliged. Every now and then a young person in their twenties or early thirties finds themselves at this thing and they’re amazed and get caught up in the fun. They were expecting a cemetery instead they find a full throttle party.

A tag line attached to the Graybeards is: Old maybe, but not extinct. Extinct? Far from it. In fact, the group gets grayer and younger at the same time. It’s growing because Rockaway is full of people who want to give back.

More than young at heart!

It’s a tradition that a couple of people are honored each year by the group. You’re never quite sure what they’ll say in their acceptance speeches but you know sooner or later they’ll say how much they love Rockaway and how special a place it is. And they pay the Graybeards the ultimate compliment by saying they’re one of the reasons Rockaway is that special place. Those are words that keep us young. Turn up the music.

try to screen our employees, but there’s only so much you can do for a kid besides ask for school ID’s, asking who their parents are and if they live in the neighborhood. These are just kids that come after school to answer phones.” According to DCPI, some cards were used over the Internet. In the January 6 incident, a debit card was used to make four charges over the Internet, two of which were in Brooklyn, one in Cedar Rapids, MI and one in Fort Worth, Texas. Locals from Breezy Point and Rockaway claim that their card was used to pay for things like limousine companies and tickets to a New Year’s Eve party. While the women were only arrested based on three incidents that occurred last month, there may have been several other which were never reported to police. A Rockaway Park resident who wanted to remain anonymous said his mother, who is in her 70s, was a victim of this

scheme. “We called for delivery food from Plum Tomatoes. My mother checks her banking regularly online, and soon after saw some charges she obviously never made. One was for a young girl’s clothing store, Charlotte Russe and one was for a limousine company. Mom had not used her card for anything else besides the takeout order,” he said. They called their bank, Bank of America, which cancelled the charges. According to Detective Reyes of DCPI, the victims who had their information stolen never lost possession of the physical debit or credit card. The Plum Tomatoes rep said he was glad the ordeal has come to an end. “We cooperated with police and thank God those involved got caught. Unfortunately, this happened to us.”

ANOTHER SANDERS PROPOSES BILL FOR FREE COMMUNITY COLLEGE State Senator James Sanders (not Bernie Sanders) is introducing a bill that would make community college free for students statewide. The New York Promise Program would require students to enroll in a community college. It is eligible for people who are taking courses required for an associate’s degree, a program in career and technical education or a one-year curriculum for students who plan to transfer to another college; be a resident of New York for at least twelve months prior to enrollment; have received their high school diploma or GED in New York; enrolled within six months of graduating high school or receiving

their GED; have a 2.5 GPA or better; have accepted all state and federal aid grants available; and have not completed more than 90 college credit hours. Sanders’ plan is based on legislation recently signed into law in Oregon and partially modeled on a plan President Barack Obama proposed in September 2015. “For far too long, a lack of financial means has prevented bright young people from becoming the stars they were destined to be,” Sanders said. “The New York Promise Program will ensure that our children have access to the educational opportunities necessary to compete in today’s economy.”

***** Well, we can’t say we were surprised that a young woman who had been working at Plum Tomatoes on Beach 129th was arrested on Monday. We had gotten calls from people who said an employee had stolen their credit card information. And we said call the cops. Folks, good time to check your credit card activity. ***** We were disheartened to hear the Wounded Warrior Project has been placed on a watch list by Charity Navigator, an organization that evaluates charities in the U.S. CBS News and The New York Times did stories about how former employees accused the Wounded Warrior Project of wasting money on staff perks. It was reported that the Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust spends 96 percent of its budget on vets. Fisher House devotes 91 percent. But according to public records reported by Charity Navigator, the

After the reports came out, the organization released a statement: “The Board takes very seriously the concerns that have been raised in recent days and is in the process of retaining independent advisors to conduct a thorough financial and policy review of the concerns.” The Wounded Warriors have been visiting Rockaway each summer for years. ***** Super Bowl Sunday is this Sunday. We can say Super Bowl because it’s not an ad. Quick aside: It’d be great if you cater your party and use our advertisers or visit one of the bars/restaurants for The Big Game. The Big Game or the Pro Football Championship is what it’s called in advertisements. The NFL owns the trademark for Super Bowl and Super Sunday and aggressively goes after advertisers who use those terms in their ads. ***** Speaking of football. Rockaway has been the hometown of many big-time athletes. But it’s not too often we can boast a big-time football player. Congrats are in order for Ray Marten who announced this

week that he’ll be attending Boston College where he’ll play tight end. More than a dozen Boston College players are in the NFL and recently retired NY Giants football coach Tom Coughlin was head coach at the school in the early 1980s. ***** There will be a meeting of the Community Board’s Parks and Public Safety Committee on Thursday at February 18 from 7-9 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus on Beach 90th Street. Among the items on the agenda: Police Precincts update; surfing locations; concessions and surfing schools; an update for the park adjacent to Goldie Maple Academy; and the Community Park Initiative. ***** Speaking of Parks. There’s been recent concern over access points on Beach 126th. The latest rumor was there’d be no access at all. Well, Deputy Commissioner Liam Kavanagh says “No final resolution yet. There are two access points for Beach 126 Street, the vehicle access ramp on the east side of the street and a stairway on the west. As you probably know, the stairs would have landed close to a driveway,

Page 7 so the designers are working on an alternative. We should have a solution to offer shortly.” Later, he said the vehicle ramp is staying for sure. ***** Calling Scott Stringer. The Comptroller really should be looking at Build It Back. So many people write and post things online about what things are costing. Homeowners are reporting hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars in outright waste. Home elevation seems to be the biggest rip-off. ***** So there were reports that Eric Ulrich is considering challenging Bill de Blasio. We wonder if Phil Goldfeder is considering a primary challenge! ***** Hydrants beware. As reported in Crain’s, urinating and drinking in public will no longer be treated as crimes. The Truth And Snow Are Out There

The Blizzard of 2016 blew into our Broad Channel community last month and departed after depositing a record setting 30+ inches of the white stuff. Not surprisingly, arriving on a full moon, the Nor’easter caused more than a little concern as to the severity of the tidal flooding that would accompany the Nor’easter. Facebook and Twit-

ter postings were awash with dire warnings that Saturday morning’s high tide would be similar to Irene and Saturday evening’s high tide would be catastrophic like Sandy. One individual actually started to relocate furnishings from the first to the second floor of their house. Thankfully, the multiple tidal floodings, which were sustained over three separate weekend high tides, was nothing like Irene or Sandy. Having avoided the rumored catastrophic tidal flooding, my attention then turned to self-amusement as I parked myself near our second floor window which looks straight up West 12th Road from the bay end of the block and laughed myself silly as the DSNY contracted little old pickup trucks with plows attached attempted to clear the roadway inundated with snow to a depth that would give a much larger pay loader problems. The few attempts made all resulted in the Lilliputian trucks advancing no more

than halfway down the street removing very little snow. As an aside, West 11th, 12th and 13th Roads were ultimately plowed clean Monday morning by the private contractors working on the new bulkheads at the bottom of those blocks and by the time Monday evening rolled around, residents were once again parking on their block! My wife Grace commented that it reminded her of a children’s book… “The little snowplow pickup that couldn’t.” That being said, the Blizzard of 2016 is now in the history books and all the local supermarkets, hardware stores and area car washes will be sending thank you cards to wherever it is that big old Nor’easter goes to retire! Speaking of thank you cards, our local celebrity groundhog, Staten Island Chuck 2.0, sent a big old thank you card to Mayor de Blasio for his not attending the groundhog festivities in Richmond County earlier this week. You may remember Mayor de Blasio fumbled Staten Is-

land Chuck 1.0 back in 2014 after a zookeeper placed it in his hands. The animal dropped to the ground, and within a week, it was dead. Our Mayor was otherwise preoccupied out in Iowa where Team Hillary relegated him to knocking on doors of voters to drum up support for candidate Clinton. Turns out many of the individuals he visited had no idea who de Blasio was! That had to be an ego bruiser for the big guy. Being a huge X-Files fan (I have watched all 202 episodes over its 10-year season) I was a really happy camper when the Fox network recently started a brand new six episode X-Files that has once again tapped into public mistrust of governments and large institutions while happily embracing a myriad of conspiracy theories and spirituality. Who knows, if the truth is really out there, maybe this time round, Mulder and Scully will find it! Broad Channel – why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Wave Prep Gives Back By Katie McFadden

The students of Wave Preparatory Elementary School in Far Rockaway have been learning different ways to give back to their community each month.

For the past few months, the students and faculty have come up with creative ways to be charitable. This month, in honor of the Super Bowl, the students had a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Souper Bowlâ&#x20AC;? collection. The kids managed to collect 2,500 cans of soup, which will go toward St. Mary Star of the Seaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s food collection. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They really went above and beyond in bringing in cans of soup for the community,â&#x20AC;? science teacher

and Community Service Outreach member Tara Bonilla said. January isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the only month the Pre-K through 5th grade students have helped out. Their community service projects occur monthly. In December, the students participated in a project called Hats for the Homeless, in which they collected hats, gloves and scarves, which were distributed to those in need through St. Mary Star of the Sea. In November, they had a Boxes of Love collection in honor of Veteranâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day and gave 100 boxes of goodies to the veterans and troops. October was â&#x20AC;&#x153;Socktoberâ&#x20AC;? and the students held a sock collection. Bonilla said the projects are conducted under the guidance of Principal Gemma Ferguson, who established the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Wave motto of â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are Worldly! We are Accountable! We are Virtuous! We are Excellent!â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Principal Ferguson tries to instill the value of being virtuous by showing the students that they can make a difference in their community,

no matter how much or how little they can give. Anything can make a difference,â&#x20AC;? Bonilla said. Wave Preparatory P.S. 362 is a relatively new school on Briar Place, first starting in 2012. Ferguson has been encouraging charitable acts on a small scale as the school was still in the process of phasing out students from P.S. 215, which used to occupy the building. February Boardwalk Update stallation are substantially complete. Boardwalk railing installation, as well as final fastening of RPL decking, continue in February. Finally, beach grass planting and sand fence installation will continue this month. In Phase 4B, from Beach 60th to Beach 73rd Street, installation of the pre-cast pile caps, sand fill under the boardwalk, electrical and plumbing utilities, and pre- cast plank installation and grouting for the new boardwalk is substantially complete. Boardwalk railing, as well as beach access structure construction, site work, and landscaping will continue in February. In Phase 5A, from Beach 39th to Beach 60th Streets, removal of the existing boardwalk, chain link fence installation, clearing and grubbing, and H-pile and pipe pile driving are substantially complete. Sand retaining wall panel and pile cap installation as well as

utility installation and sand fill under the boardwalk, will be completed in February. Pre-cast plank installation and beach and land side access structure construction will continue this month, as well as the start of boardwalk railing installation. While the work goes on, there is limited access to the beach in construction areas until Spring 2016. In Phase 3, from Beach 108th to Beach 126th, access is only available after these streets, or at Beach 108th and Beach 116th Streets. In Phase 4 from Beach 60th to Beach 86th street, access is only available at Beach 73rd and Beach 86th. In Phase 5A, from Beach 39th to Beach 60th, there is no beach access until spring. Work Hours are between 7AM—4PM, Monday—Friday. Extended work hours are between 4PM and 6PM. Saturdays are reserved as makeup days in case of inclement weather.

The Parks Department recently releases its monthly update on the status of the boardwalk construction and an outline of what will happen in February. Phase 1 and Phase 2, from Beach 86th to Beach 107th Streets have been open since the summer, but you may continue to see small work crews in these areas as the contractor, Skanska, completes “punch-list” items. A lot of work will occur in Phase 3 from Beach 108th to

Beach 126th Streets. Pipe and h-pile driving, sand retaining wall panels, and boardwalk pile caps are substantially complete, with exception for construction access locations which will be completed at a later date. Utility installation, sand fill under the boardwalk, and installation of access structure pile caps and planks will continue in February. Boardwalk plank erection at the east end (near Beach 106th island) as well as installation of boardwalk railings will commence in February. The Lazer Speaks Where Are All the Good Candidates? By now the Iowa Caucuses are over and everyone knows who the winners are. A few candidates sensing utter despair and defeat will have quit by now, but as I sit here Monday thinking about the election I wonder to myself, where are all the good candidates and where are the meaningful debates about real issues? There is no shortage of problems in this country, state, or town of Rockaway. We live in the greatest place in the world, but the problems are real and need to be faced up to. In my opinion, the biggest problem is unity. We have too many candidates and none of them seem to be able to galvanize the nation. I am not into politics on any level, but I do enjoy watching Madame Secretary. Why canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t Hillary look and act like Tea Leoni? Now that would be a can-

didate who gets my attention! And I am sure that Tea would never put high security emails on her private server, she just isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like that. Rubio, Cruz, Sanders, even Trump, I mean really? This is the best we have to offer? Where is the dashing young man or woman who has ideas that spark both young and old and give the nation a sense of hope and optimism? Is it that we just havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t gotten to that part of the process, is that possible? It seems like the race has been going on forever, and we havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even chosen candidates for either party yet. Why does Mike Bloomberg tease us with a flier that he might run? How wonderfully delicious would that be to see Bill de Blasio with enemies at both the state and federal levels. I could see Bloomberg creating a federal zone right through Manhattan to allow horse drawn carriages to stop right in front of Gracie

Mansion. And I could see Cuomo creating a composting project inside the Mansion grounds. How wonderful would that be?! Does Senator Charles Schumer realize that he could be on television anytime he wants if he becomes President? Senator Schumer always helped Rockaway. And we can thank Weiner for Aviator. Donald Trump plays strongly to the middle of the country, but here in New York we see people like him everyday. If you listen to people who really know him, they all say that he is the nicest person, with the nicest family and that he is very humble. What? Maybe he is just acting, he is a celebrity you know. Ronald Reagan was able to bring the country together, and he was just acting, why not Donald? Doctor Ben Carson seems like the most gentle soul you could ever meet. Articulate, and not given to hyperbole, he could

heal the nations racial divides. But he needs a little Denzel Washington in him. Not the nice Denzel, but you know the movies where he is the bad guy, but you like him anyway. Maybe all of this is just a show, and doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really matter? If it was on Netflix we could all binge one snowy Saturday and get to the ending. And if anyone missed it, they could go On-Demand and watch it. But really this is taking forever, and we havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t gotten to New Hampshire yet!

FERRY TERMINAL CALLED FOR

Dear Editor: Instead of just repairing the sinking roadway called BCD wouldn’t it be more cost effective to make a “permanent” ferry terminal there now? BCD could be diverted (and improved) through the old unused Lilco plant property. A permanent proper structure with parking for the Rockaway ferry should be built. A floating dock with a tent that can be whisked away at a moments notice is NOT a proper ferry terminal. If the ferry is coming to Rockaway in 2017, why is there not a terminal being constructed for it NOW ? Just my two cents... Matt Whalen

Good Vibes Lots of good vibes on The Rock this weekend on the Rockaway fundraising front this past weekend. Rock Soup and Rockaway WISH each held fundraisers within a block of each other in Rockaway Beach. The amazing ladies from WISH teamed up with Chris and Sarah of CROM on Beach 92nd, Lena from Yoga on the Rocks and Kim and Elisa of Bluming Studio-Surfilates for a really great total workout while raising funds for great causes on The Rock! About 40 people gathered on a Sunday afternoon at

CROM for a workout of kettle bells, yoga and Pilates to raise funds for Rockaway WISH’s many charitable events throughout the year. Another great fundraiser, which I attended for the second month in a row, was Rock Soup. Rock Soup is an awesome and great, simple way of promoting and funding worthwhile projects that help the Rockaway community get better and better. In a nutshell, the way Rock Soup works is everyone makes a donation at the door, into a soup pot of course! Those with ideas get an opportunity to talk

about their idea, explaining the benefits to the Rockaway community. Then over a nice bowl of soup (yes, from a different pot than the money) all participants and guests mull over the ideas and at the end of the night a simple vote is cast by all for the best project. This month’s Rock Soup was hosted at the Rockaway Retreat House on Beach 91st. Four groups presented some pretty cool ideas. The runner-ups were looking for funding for church activities, a skateboard surface start up and a cooperative to teach silk screening to youth for a non-profit start-up. After a close tally the winner of the $250 pot went to a local black surfing group, which is looking to promote surfing to many of those in the Rockaway community who may not have ever had the surfing experience given to them, in turn giving them greater appreciation for the water and of course the chance at being awesome surfers! This amazing Rock Soup

Page 19 event was facilitated by Kalin Callaghan and Giovanna Maselli. As usual, they did an awesome job. Follow both Rockaway WISH and Rock Soup on Facebook for their next events, which help make The Rock that much better. If you wish to present an idea at a Rock Soup event, go to the Rock Soup Facebook and apply. Speaking of making the Rock “that much better.” The Army Corps of Engineers presentation on the status of our beaches and Jamaica Bay to the Community board 14 has been rescheduled to the March meeting. Get your READY FOR THE JETTIES signs ready!! Also, anyone who feels victimized by the Build it Back Program, whether it be by a construction fence installed and no work performed for months or just a gross $200,000 overspending on a basement renovation with your boiler still below the base flood elevation, please contact me at seathenight@aol. com. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Notice that the stiffest tree is more easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind.â&#x20AC;? (Susi Hately, Anatomy and Asana) This is indeed true when we apply the idea to our bodies. When we are even somewhat flexible in our muscles, ligaments, tendons, connective tissues, we walk, bend, reach, climb more easily. And physical exercise â&#x20AC;&#x201C; whatever it may be â&#x20AC;&#x201C; feels better and becomes more beneficial. Find safe ways

to stretch the neck, triceps, shoulders, upper back, chest, quads, hamstrings, back, side body, hip flexors (front), inside of legs, buttocks, hips, and abdominals. You can find instructions/videos online. Be sure to be warm and go to the tension point during the stretching, not to the point of feeling pain. Of course, stretching is an integral part of yoga poses too. (I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t help plugging the practice of yoga!) Being like the bamboo or willow also applies to our minds and hearts. Sometimes when

we are rigid in our thinking, we cannot obtain understanding. In a workshop I attended recently, I picked a card from one of those wellness decks, which stated something like, â&#x20AC;&#x153;When you believe something, you assume you are right and you may even destroy relationships in order to defend your position.â&#x20AC;? That was a sudden realization for me. Just because we believe something doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make it right. Or maybe it is right, but I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t help thinking that to be open and flexible could make for a happier life. Being a little more adaptable to the things that come our way and the things we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t expect could cause less anxiety, less stress and less distress. Not only in relation to curve balls, what about the thinking that something is supposed to be a certain way and then there is a change. Change is constant. Constant change is life. Maybe try to be open to thinking differently. Maybe think about another personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s point of view before shutting it out, even if we come to the same place of thinking. We

Soften the heart to feel more, convert bad feelings to good over time and give without any ties. Body Expansion (stretching and lengthening): to be like the willow creates a fluid body. Mind Awareness: to be like the willow creates more of a life flow. Heart Openness: to be like the willow creates more profound experiences. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful for what you have and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Plunge for a Good Cause By Katie McFadden

Ready to take the plunge? On Saturday, February 6, all are welcome to the 16th Annual Rockaway Plunge for Cystic Fibrosis. On Saturday, at 1 p.m., plungers and spectators can head to the Colony Theater in Breezy Point (200 Bayside Avenue) for a day of fun in honor of a special 19-year-old girl, Annie McMahon, who has cystic fibrosis. Participants can register the day of the event starting at 1 p.m., which will be followed by an after-party in the Colony Theater. Those taking the plunge get free admission to the party and a goodie bag if they can raise and donate $75 or more. Those who want to participate in the party, but are not brave enough to face the chilly bay, can make a $50 donation to enjoy the festivities. The Rockaway Plunge has been held each winter for 16 years. “It’s always been somewhere in Rockaway,” organizer and Annie’s father John McMahon said. “It started at the Tap and Grill and from there it has grown. The whole thing kind of started as a dare. We dared the bartender, Jim Mullen, to jump in the ocean and people were giving him money to do it, so we said let’s do it and donate the money to Cystic Fibrosis. ter, Annie, was diagnosed with the disorder at age three. “She was born with cystic fibrosis. It affects the lungs and the proper makeup to break up mucus in the lungs, causing them to deteriorate after a period of time,” McMahon explained. Feeling helpless, the McMahons started the cause. “We wanted to do something. We felt so helpless in terms of wanting to make a difference. When my daughter was diagnosed, the average life expectancy of a child with Cystic Fibrosis was 18 and since we’ve been doing this, it’s now 36,” he said. “Unfortunately, my daughter is at a stage where being able to breathe is harder and harder and she’s being listed for a lung transplant.” Annie is currently on lists at Boston Children’s Hospital and Columbia. Funds raised from the plunge have often gone toward the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. “This event has raised millions for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and other nonprofits over the years,” McMahon said, adding that more than $100,000 was raised for last year’s event alone. This year, due to the circumstances of Annie’s condition, the donations will go toward Help Hope Live, an organization that raises money to help cover transplant costs, and the New York Lung Transplant Fund. The organization LiveOnNY, will also be at Saturday’s event so people can register as organ donors. “In terms of our struggle with this disease, Annie’s next platform for survival is a

We do our best to celebrate life at this event and try to have some fun around a tough disease and a tough situation,” McMahon said.

McMahon says about 300 to 350 people take the plunge each year. “There are people that have been doing this for years in Rockaway. It’s great how the Rockaway community gets behind it, including people who know my daughter or someone else with cystic fibrosis and people who have no connection to the disease, but just want to help. It’s always an emotional day with laughter and tears, but it has helped my daughter. It’s her favorite day of the year and it motivates her, letting her connect with people, knowing that she’s not alone. It’s a great day, but also a tough day,” he said. Avoid Like The Plague List

For the past seven months while I have been describing this journey of mine, I have written many times about foods that are great for you. Foods that help you lose weight and foods that nutritionally can assure your health. I have really only mentioned one that you should stay away from... yep, you got it…SUGAR!! But, lately there has been an eye-opening article going around that I feel very important to pass on and discuss. It was written by William Marler who is considered a national expert and attorney in food safety with over 20 years of experience under his belt. He has been at the forefront of food-borne illness litigation and has filed suits against companies that include Chili’s, Dole, KFC, McDonald’s, Taco Bell and Wendy’s.

Marler is also the attorney filing suits against Chipotle over the recent outbreaks of E. coli and norovirus at a number of the causal Mexican grill chain restaurants. An accomplished attorney and expert in his field, Marler has won more than $600 million in his cases for his clients. Over the years he has compiled a list of certain foods that he simply can’t stomach anymore. These are the six foods we should ALL stay away from, ALL THE TIME: Unpasteurized (“raw”) milk and packaged juices. Unpasteurized milk, sometimes called “raw” milk, can be contaminated with bacteria, viruses and parasites. Between 1998 and 2011, there were 148 food poisoning outbreaks linked to raw milk and raw milk products in the US—and keep in mind that comparatively few

people in the country ever consume these products, so 148 outbreaks is nothing to ignore. As for unpasteurized packaged juices, one of Marler’s earliest cases was the 1996 E. coli outbreak from unpasteurized Odwalla apple juice. As a result, he won’t go near raw milk or juice. “There’s no benefit big enough to take away the risk of drinking products that can be made safe by pasteurization,” he says. Raw sprouts. Uncooked and lightly cooked sprouts have been linked to more than 30 bacterial outbreaks (mostly of salmonella and E. coli) in the US since mid-1990s. As recently as 2014, salmonella from bean sprouts sent 19 people to the hospital. All types of sprouts—including alfalfa, mung bean, clover and radish sprouts—can spread infection, which is caused by bacterial contamination of their seeds. Here comes a real tough one. If you are like me, rare steaks are the only way to go... But beware according to Bill!! Meat that isn’t well done. Marler orders his burgers well done. “The reason ground products are more problematic and need to be cooked more thoroughly is that any bacteria that’s on the surface of the meat can be ground inside of it,” Marler says. “If it’s not cooked thoroughly to 160°F throughout, it can cause poisoning by E. coli and salmonella and other bacterial illnesses.” As

for steaks, needle tenderizing—a common restaurant practice in which the steak is pierced with needles or sliced with knives to break down the muscle fibers and make it more tender—can also transfer bugs from the surface to the interior of the meat. Prewashed or precut fruits and vegetables. “I avoid these like the plague,” Marler says. Why? The more a food is handled and processed, the more likely it is to become tainted. He buys unwashed, uncut produce in small amounts and eats it within three to four days to reduce the risk for listeria, a deadly bug that grows at refrigerator temps. Raw or undercooked eggs. You may remember the salmonella epidemic of the 1980s and early ’90s that was linked mainly to eggs. If you swore off raw eggs back then, you might as well stick with it. The most recent salmonella outbreak from eggs, in 2010, caused roughly 2,000 reported cases of illness. Raw oysters and other raw shellfish. Marler says that raw shellfish—especially oysters— have been causing more foodborne illnesses lately. He links this to warming waters. “If there’s bacteria in the water it’ll get into their system, and if you eat it you could have trouble.” Sounds like it’s safer to eat SUGAR, doesn’t it??? Who runs the peninsula? Women. As part of an ongoing series, the Rockaway Times is profiling local female entrepreneurs each week. This week is Aggie Batista, owner of CruiseOne in Rockaway Park. It’s the dead of winter and you’re probably thinking about a warm getaway. Aggie Batista, owner of a CruiseOne franchise in Rockaway Park, is available to help plan and book your next adventure. Batista has owned a CruiseOne franchise since 2011. CruiseOne has been in the industry since 1992. It is part of World Travel Holdings, the world’s largest cruise company, ranked in the top three percent of franchises worldwide,” Batista said of the company. Through CruiseOne, a full-service leisure travel company, she offers different packages for ocean and river cruises, but it’s not just limited to cruising. Batista also offers trips to all-inclusive resorts and guided tours around the world. “I’ve helped plan trips on cruises, all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean, customized European tours, everything. It fits everyone’s desires. Everyone has a special way that they love to explore the world, whether it’s on the ocean or on the river, or sitting on a beach at a resort or backpacking through different countries. It’s about being open and working with everyone to meet their special needs,” she said. Prior to working in the travel industry, Batista was working in the administrative field for about 15

years, and she dabbled in other business ventures like real estate and selling products door-todoor. However, she always had the travel bug. “At a young age, I was responsible for booking my family’s vacations. My mom is from Colombia and my father is from the Dominican Republic, so we would take trips to visit family abroad and when I was young, I would go around to different agencies and would compare travel quotes and discuss them with my family. I would also collect travel brochures and learn about these different destinations. I would cut out pictures of these different places and make collages and told my family we should go visit them. When online travel became popular, I started booking our vacations myself online,” she said. Batista also did her fair share of traveling on her own. “When I was 21 and I felt like I could handle things on my own, I packed a bag and went to explore Europe by myself. I did my own guided tour around England and then went to Vienna and Austria where I met my best friend and we toured the country and spoke to everyone. I remember coming back feeling so transformed after meeting all of these people from different places and cultures. I knew at that point that I would be doing this for a living one day.” Batista knew she wanted to own her own business one day and when it came time to decide what road she would follow, she knew had the perfect idea. “When I was trying to decide what to do, I sat down and made a list of passions and my evaluated my personality and skills and I thought about the things that would fulfill me and make me happy,” she said. “The travel seed was in me. I knew travel would make me happy. I love doing it, I love talking with people, I love planning with people and that’s how that started.” She looked into home-based travel businesses with family in mind. “I have an amazing husband and a great son who’s three. Home and family are both priorities and one of the feelings I had when I knew I was going to be a

mom, was being able to be available and experience my son’s development at every stage. A home-based business gives me the flexibility to be involved in my son’s life and schooling,” she said. A Ray Of Talent: LOCAL FOOTBALL STAR HEADED TO BOSTON COLLEGE By Dylan Watton

“Ma, how long have I been playing football?” Ray Marten, Jr. asked. As he sat on his couch, the 6’4”, 250-pound high school senior tried to recall when his pigskin pilgrimage began as he prepares to take the next step into the college ranks. On Wednesday, on National Signing Day, Marten officially committed to Boston College to play on their football team as a tight end. “I went for the first time in second grade but I was too young,” Marten said after a little prodding from his mom, Linda. The next year he began playing for the Brooklyn Hurricanes, a youth team based in Marine Park. Despite playing a variety of other sports such as basketball, baseball, swimming, and soccer, football has always been his primary athletic focus. “I always find parallels to real life situations,” he said. “Never give up, be tough. It’s more apparent in football than any of other sports I’ve played.” As a youngster he attended a couple of games at Penn State’s famed Beaver Stadium and over the years has met a number of NFL players including Marco Battaglia, Eric Olsen, Tyrone Wheatley, and Leon Williams. Exhibiting talent from a young age, Marten has bounced around both sides of the ball, playing as a defensive end and fullback before finding his niche as a tight end. The position involves a variety of skills including run-blocking and catching, best exhibited by two of Marten’s professional idols in Dallas Cowboy legend Jason Whitten and longtime Pittsburgh Steeler Heath Miller. “I definitely prefer offense, I like scoring touchdowns,” Marten said with a smirk. “I like the idea of how much you can do with the position.” As Marten began to exhibit more promise in the sport, he decided to make a difficult decision. Two weeks prior to beginning ninth grade, Marten requested that he reclassify himself to repeat the eighth grade. The process is done to enhance eligibility requirements once colleges

begin offering scholarships to recruits. Reclassification is a common practice in locales where high school football is king, but is rarer in New York. “We were very unsure of it at first but Ray was insistent,” Linda said. “He said ‘I don’t want to go if I can’t repeat the eighth grade.’ It was a tough decision but he made it all on his own and it worked out.” Marten attends Poly Prep Country Day School, one of the premier private schools in New York City for athletics and academics. There

Mangiero had high praise for Marten both on and off the gridiron. “He was always a great person, a great kid and he’s just gotten more mature and understands how important it is to be respectful, courteous, and a kind person,” he said. “As a player he’s night and day from when he started. He came in real raw and now he’s a highly technical kid. Knows how to run routes, knows how to block. All the little things that are so important he does now.” Marten was voted defensive MVP in his junior year and overall MVP in his senior year. Marten gained some local notoriety after appearing in ads for MSG Varsity and Optimum Online. His play on the field led to numerous schools recruit-

While National Signing Day will inundate sports television with press conferences and cap-donning ceremonies for the most sought-after recruits, Marten said his day will consist of rolling out of bed at 7 a.m., digitally signing his official commitment document, and going back to sleep. “From the start, BC was a pretty special place to me,” he said. “I wanted to make sure that I had my sport secured.” When asked what he’s most

I watch College GameDay on Saturdays and it’s always a pretty exciting atmosphere.” Playing for BC in the Atlantic Coast Conference will take Marten to some of the most notorious college cathedrals including Clemson’s Memorial Stadium (aka Death Valley) and Florida State’s fearsome Doak Campbell Stadium. His first college game will be played in Dublin as part of the Aer Lingus Classic against Georgia Tech. Marten said his goal is to reach the NFL but is aware of the difficulty. “I’ll have an education to back me up. That’s why BC is such a special place.” He thanked a number of people for helping him reach this point, including his parents Linda and Ray, Sr., Coach Mangiero, Lance Bennett, and Rockaway native Matt Long, whose “workouts are hard, to say the least,” according to Marten. “Everybody has been really supportive of my cause. My goal is to put Rockaway on the map.” “It’s bittersweet,” Linda said. “He’s wanted to play football at a college level since he was 10. We’re extremely proud of him both academically and athletically.” Mangiero wants Marten to remain level-headed. “The most important thing when you go away is to have great character, that will solve most of your problems. You’re gonna get bigger and stronger, you’re gonna be a better football player. Always remember your proud Irish-American blood and your great family.”

You read the headline right, “??? in the Attic.” Now let’s take a few minutes to think about just what you could find in the attic. If you have an attic in your house it is likely that you’re not going up there and inspecting it too often. But you should be checking it at least twice a year. Here are just a few things you should be looking for: Openings: We all know that birds, squirrels and other animals work their way into attics. What most people don’t think of is this is a common problem in the winter as well as in the summer. Just as people are looking to get out of the cold, so are the animals, and small openings in the eves are a common way for them to get in. Wet spots and water stains: Roofs and siding don’t last forever, sometimes water or moisture can work its way through and you will

see wet spots and water stains. This has the potential of causing wood to rot, mildew to build up and it can breed insects. Another caution is with snow buildup during the winter; as the snow melts the water doesn’t always drip off the roof. Sometimes it can build up behind lower snow that hasn’t melted and form puddles. Slanted roofs are not designed to keep out puddled water.

Insulation: Making sure your attic insulation is in good shape can save on your utility bills year round. Insulation should be fluffy, flattened insulation should be replaced. Fiberglass insulation should not have hard spots in it. If you see spots that are hardened, this is a sign that it got wet, so look around for other possible signs of water leaks or wet spots.

Air vents: Most attics have air vents. On older houses they are usually on the front and rear attic walls. On newer houses, they may be built into the peak or there may be a vent going through the roof itself. Make sure the vents are clear for proper airflow. Blockage of air vents can cause stagnant air and moisture buildup leading to other problems. Smell: If you smell an odor in your attic, this is usually a sign of mold buildup, leaks or animals. So look for signs of these three things if you smell an odor in the attic. These are the five most common things to check for in your attic. There is more that can be checked for like termites, open electrical boxes, abandoned wires, seals on duct work, etc. When you’re ready to check these, you may want to call a handyman or contractor. A hearty, savory slow cooker stew Serves: 6

32 ounces beef broth (I use low sodium) 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 2 cups of baby carrots 4-5 small red potatoes, cut into bite size pieces (about 3 cups) 1 tablespoon dried parsley 1 tablespoon oregano 2 bay leaves 1 cup frozen peas 1 cup frozen corn ¼ cup flour ¼ cup water

Ingredients: 2 pounds beef stew meat, cut into bite size pieces 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper 1 medium onion, finely chopped (I used pearl onions) 2 celery ribs, slices 3-4 cloves garlic, minced 5 ounces tomato paste

Instructions: Combine beef, celery, carrots, onion, potatoes, salt, pepper, garlic, parsley, oregano, bay leaves, Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, and tomato paste in the crockpot. I used a 6 quart crockpot for this stew. Cook on LOW for 10 hours or on HIGH for 6-7 hours. About 30 minutes before serving, mix the flour and the water together in a small dish and pour into the crockpot. Mix until well combined. This will add a nice thickness to the stew. Next add your frozen peas and corn. Continue cooking covered for 30 minutes.

Blessing Bags Project At Local Church Seeks To Help Rockaway’s Homeless By Dylan Watton

New York City has nearly 60,000 homeless people, many of whom rely on the generosity of more fortunate residents to get by for even basic needs. In Rockaway there are a number of homeless shelters, and Beach 116th Street has never been short of panhandlers and others looking for assistance. To try and combat this issue, a local church began a project to help out Rockaway’s homeless population to great initial success. “I received a church bulletin from my church back home in Ohio saying to fill ‘blessing bags’ with toothpaste and other essentials,” Megan Duchon said. At the First Congregational Church, a house of worship affiliated with the United Church of Christ located on Beach 94th Street, Duchon, Hennigan Kearns, and Sheree Morgan led their Sunday school pupils in implementing the blessing bag project in Rockaway. Announced to the congregation in late November, the class received a voluminous amount of supplies from worshippers including toothpaste, floss, snack foods, hand and body soaps, bottles of water, winter wear such as scarves and gloves, and importantly clean socks. Morgan told the children that socks are among the highest requested items in homeless shelters and sadly also among the least donated.

Duchon said that outpouring of support from the congregation and the community took her aback. “When I presented this idea to the congregation everybody bought in at least five items,” she said. “Sometimes when people donate things they just buy the cheapest items. But there are things here that are good quality, not just leftover items.” Rockaway’s

Handyman donated water and hand-warmers while other parishioners continued to bring in items that eventually took up the entire back left corner of the second-floor Sunday school class. On January 31 the six students in class began the task of transferring the goods from brown paper bags to clear plastic Ziplocs, which at the end of services that day worshippers could take with them and give to a shelter, anybody they knew who was needy, or simply someone on the street who could use the extra help. On Thursdays, Kearns and other churchgoers run a food pantry from this location and said that items can be given out at that time as well. Each bag contained a small blue blessing card with a short prayer and information about the church. “Everybody in the congregation can just take a bag and give it someone in need,” Moore said. “It’s a good lesson for the kids.” “Doing this project made me feel [caring] and feel that I was doing something good,” Maxwell, a seven-year-old, said. “Some people might give a lot of stuff and some people might give a little bit but that’s nice because they give what they have.” Another student named Maya, 11, added “When we were gonna do this project it made me feel that the people we’re giving this to can see that people want to help them.” “I think I am hopeful and caring because I am helping people who are very poor and that I’m one of the people helping the homeless people,” Kenton, 8, said. Each plastic Ziploc bag contained a variety of items, even as

Maxwell asked if it was ok if he put duplicate items in a bag. Another inquisitive student asked how the homeless would be able to brush their teeth if they didn’t have a home to do it in and was informed by Kearns that there are shelters and other public facilities where they can shower and deal with personal hygiene. The kids talked about the many ways they could distribute the goods to those in need, including driving throughout Rockaway and walking along Rockaway Beach Boulevard with their parents. Kearns also said that the church has made connections with PS 183 on Beach 79th Street to help students and families who could use the items there. “I’m amazed, I thought we would just have tiny bags,” Duchon said as the kids continued to fill up Ziploc after Ziploc. “It shows the power of what can happen when we all come together. When we first started this I anticipated getting 15 bags filled, but we will have enough to fill 40 bags by the end of the day.” Kenton made a connection between what the project means

and what he has learned as a result of his Sunday school lessons. “When we read the Bible there is one story when Jesus helped a blind man to see again, so it taught us to always help someone who needs help,” he said. Pastor Joe, the leader of the congregation who was preparing to lead Sunday services, had a pensive look as he pondered how the blessing bags initiative tied into what message the church was trying to spread. “On a basic level when we serve one another and love one another and meet one another’s needs we are serving, loving, and caring for Christ,” he said. Duchon hails from Ohio and said she always wanted to move to New York. After living in Brooklyn for a time she discovered Rockaway. “It has that small town feel that I could identify with,” she explained. She has been a member of the First Congregational Church for around three years and has been teaching the Sunday school class for two years. She said that the success of this project could lead to it being continued. “I think we’ll keep having people bring in items. People were sad that this was the last Sunday but they should continue to bring things.”

As the students were finishing up packing their bags, Moore asked them to repeat the phrase that Pastor Joe tells the congregation each Sunday, and told them to remember how it could tie in to this project. Down here in this area you need more parking. People come around in the summertime and they drive around for an hour and end up parking in places they aren’t supposed to. We also need more stuff for teenagers. But honestly I don’t have too many complaints, I’ve been here for 20 years and it’s great. — Jerry Toomey

What I would need is even more restaurants to bring people from outside. They’ve done a great job with this boardwalk and I think more places will keep people coming. I also think some playgrounds will be good for the kids. — Alina Januszek

I live at 81st and Shore Front and half the time when you come home from work there is nowhere to go. God forbid if you have more than one car. That Blooming Snow OMG! That was some snowstorm- it’s hard to believe that just a few years ago in 2006 we had .1 inch more snow (we just missed breaking the record this year).
