WINTER STORM ORLENA LEAVES AN IMPACT

Rockaway Beach after the last sand replenishment verus Tuesday. Photo by John Cori By Katie McFadden

Winter Storm Orlena (yes, she had a name) seemed to be the storm that never ended, as it brought snowfall over the course of three days, but some of her impacts may remain after the snow finally melts. Snow began to fall on Sunday, January 31, with the heavier snow picking up late in the night, piling on throughout Monday and flurries continued to flutter on Tuesday afternoon as the storm finally came to an end. When all was said and done, Rockaway had topped at 18” in parts. The Department of Sanitation was hard at work throughout, clearing the roads, while neighbors took care of their sidewalks. However, some effects may be longer lasting. In addition to heavy snow, Orlena also brought moderate flooding to the area and the beach took a beating as high tides and heavy waves chipped away at the dunes. In areas that regularly see flooding with higher-than-normal tides, such as certain parts of Broad Channel and lower streets in Rockaway, Orlena showed her strength. Some in Broad Channel made the best of it on Monday, pulling out the kayak to paddle down the street for a bit of entertainment. However

other areas showed some scary scenes. On Beach 84th Street in Rockaway, a neighbor shared a video to Citizen App on Tuesday of a snowplow quickly reversing down the road that was submerged in at least three feet of floodwater that had allegedly came from the bay and up from sewers on the block. As the storm started to subside on Tuesday, some locals took to the beach to check out what remained. In Belle Harbor, John Reinhardt captured the significant damage that was done to the dunes. His photos showed the blue mobimats and wooden fencing mangled as erosion of the dunes left cliffs several feet high. Down in the Beach 90s, John Cori captured the same as the ramp down to the beach looked more like a kayak launch and the remnants of the protective dunes kept the ocean just a few feet away from the boardwalk. The significant erosion and flooding caught the attention of TV news outlets like NBC and CBS, which covered the issues in reports on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Locals noted the need for urgent help, with some saying they hope to see jetties built faster, sand replenishment to come soon and streets that frequently flood to be raised.

On the evening of Saturday, January 30, a bottlenose dolphin washed up dead on Beach 123rd Street. Small crowds gathered on the chilly night to get a glimpse of the creature after an alert went off on Citizen App saying a whale or shark has washed up on the beach. Police also responded to the scene.

The more than six-foot dolphin rolled around in the tide as people used flashlights to observe it. As we go to press, it is not clear if the dolphin’s body was removed or swept back out into the water. There were no further reports of sightings in the following days. Photo by Katie McFadden.

***** Tuesday was Groundhog’s Day but we know it’s basically been Groundhog Year. Oh, the Staten Island Ground Hog predicted an early spring but there was some controversy because the groundhog’s appearance was actually taped (which why not? It’s like Groundhog’s Day). Punxsutawney Phil on the other hand called for six more weeks of winter. ***** This is an annual statement of a pet peeve. We wish drivers would at least try to get snow off the roofs of their cars. Especially if they’ll be driving at high speeds on the highway. Snow can turn icy and become flying missiles. And then there are the drivers who wipe off just a peephole on the windshield snow on cars. *****

PS/MS 47 in Broad Channel will have a new (temporary) home. The Panel for Educational Policy (PEP) unanimously approved a plan to relocate the student body to the old Stella Marris High School (and Martin de Porres) on RBB and Beach 111th. The move will happen over the winter recess. We first caught this news from our friends at the Queens Chronicle. ***** There won’t be a Poseidon Prom which has been a fabulously fun party at the Knights of Columbus the past few Februarys but the organizers, those nautical nuts, are planning some fun to take its place. Stay tuned. The Prom helped offset costs of running Rockaway’s annual boardwalk extravaganza. So whatever they come with it we hope you’ll support. As of now, we fully expect the parade to be back better than ever in September. ***** Whoa. Maybe it wasn’t Powerball but the Graybeards’ Pot-a-Gold raffle was certainly

a mega thousands. The winner take all pot ballooned to $191,400 by 8 p.m. last Saturday when Tom Morgan invited Fr. Jim Cunningham to pick the ticket from the big raffle wheel live on Instagram. A group identified as DOT DOC Builders were the lucky winners. But so too were The Graybeards and the community they serve. Big thumbs up to all those who made this such a huge success. ***** Please check smoke alarms and be aware of possible fire hazards. Last Friday, a fire broke out in the dormitory of Yeshiva Mercaz HaTorah of Belle Harbor causing significant damage. Firefighters had to battle strong winds and frigid temperatures. The next day, a fire ravaged a house on Beach 86th Street near the Rockaway Freeway. A young child was critically injured and taken to the hospital. ***** Cheese, Louise it’s that time of year, already? Yep. Stay tuned for details about the annual Rockaway Times

The Rockaway Times Photo Contest. There’s no doubt, Rockaway’s Got Talent and we like to put the spotlight on peninsula shutterbugs. Start going through your great photos (or go out and snap!) ***** We’re happy Governor Cuomo has relented and allowed indoor dining (though 25% capacity is hardly enough for the businesses that have struggled for almost a year). He has set Valentine’s Day as the start. Very romantic but not very practical. Valentine’s Day is Sunday, February 14 why is that any better than February 10, 11, 12 or 13? Especially since the 12th and 13th are weekend nights! ***** Sign up for The Rockaway Times by email. You’ll never miss an edition even if it snows! FinallyDear Editor:

Lucky Dear Editor, Last Saturday's Graybeards Pot-a-Gold 50-50 raffle was a mind blower! As you may have heard, the winner, DOT DOC Builders, took home an astonishing $191,400! That's gotta be some kind of record. Congratulations! A sincere thank you to the other 3,800 participants whose generosity ensures that the Graybeards will continue to work their magic. It's times like these when I'm reminded why I live in Rockaway, even during a Nor'easter. Rick Horan

Today (2/2/21), my wife, while she was on her laptop, started whooping like crazy. At first I thought we won the Graybeard's Pot-a-Gold (we didn't). Then I thought maybe the lottery (again no). She finally was able to get us COVID vaccine appointments (on different days, but we'll take it) at Beach Channel High school. We have been trying since the vaccine roll out, but the NYC website was not user friendly, to say the least. It reminded me of the disastrous roll out of the Obamacare website. That too was an utter mess and the website alone cost more than a wall at our southern border would have cost. No matter which party holds reign, why can't our government do anything efficiently and correctly? I guess the answer is self-evident - they are all politicians who are more interested in getting re-elected than actually representing the people that put them in office. Peter Galvin

On Saturday, January 30, a fire broke out in a two-story home at 315 Beach 86th Street, leaving a child in critical condition. Firefighters responded to a basement fire in the home at about 10:30 a.m. A third alarm was transmitted as the fire spread and cold temperatures called for more backup in fighting the blaze. Close to 140 firefighters responded. A three-year-old girl named Gisselle was found in a second-floor hallway unconscious and unresponsive by Ladder Company 137’s Captain Peter Hayden. Engine Company 268 firefighter Joseph Durkin began CPR on the young girl. FDNY Paramedics David Chambers and Michael Fox took over care and she was transferred to St. John’s Episco-

pal Hospital in critical condition. As we go to press, it is believed the young girl is recovering. Three other residents were also treated for injuries. The fire was under control just after 12 p.m. A cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Tips from Tom On the Road

By Katie McFadden

One of the things that makes Rockaway unique is that its small businesses support one another. Tom Murphy, owner of Curran’s Superior Meats, has been exemplifying this as he hopes to give restaurants a boost during the pandemic with “Tips from Tom.” About a year and a half ago, Murphy started filming short clips, showing his customers how certain cuts of meat are made at the popular butcher on Beach 116th Street, calling the series “Tips from Tom.” Posting the videos to social media, Murphy started to build an audience as people learned how a pork loin is butterflied or how a filet mignon is prepared for roasting. His sense of humor and even impressions made the short clips even more entertaining. Now Murphy has found a new mission and has taken “Tips from Tom” on the

road as he hopes to give local restaurants a lift. When the pandemic hit, Currans had to make some adjustments, such as putting up plexiglass barriers and limiting the number of customers in the store, but throughout, Murphy says the business has been in good shape. “We’ve been doing well at our location. People were worried about meat prices going up and afraid they would run out, so they started to panic and stock up. We had lines down the block as we had to take orders at the door,” Murphy said. Demand was so high for Curran’s superior meats that people even got creative with how they placed orders. “We had one guy fly a paper airplane into the store with his order on it,” Murphy said. So Murphy is now putting in effort to support businesses that are subject to even more restrictions. “We’re here to support the Rockaway com-

munity’s small businesses, especially restaurants,” Murphy said. As Rockaway’s restaurants have been subjected to customer limits, closures and indoor dining bans, Murphy hopes to bring the attention back to them. “These guys all work hard. I get safety is important but some of it is a little too complicated. You can go to Long Beach and eat indoors there, but what’s the difference between their air and our air? We have beautiful restaurants here and they’re taking heavy losses and being hit with fines and dealing with all of these rules,” Murphy said. “People have been showing me tremendous support and I want to pay it forward, so we don’t lose our restaurants. We lost our store in Sandy and were out for nine months. It’s a horrible feeling of not getting income and not knowing if you’re going to work again. As the good Lord would have it, I wound up in a new spot, but I started thinking of these other places that are going through tough times. I thought it would be a nice idea to reach out to them and see how they’re doing and just let them know that our community supports them.” To help local restaurants, Murphy is now bringing his “Tips from Tom” on the road, visiting various local eateries and giving them a spotlight. On Sundays or after hours, when Currans is closed for

the day, he enlists the help of his nephew, James, or one of his employees to film. In each short video, Murphy interviews the business owners or managers, asking them about upcoming specials, highlighting their outdoor dining setups and showing the chefs at work, cooking up some of their signature dishes. Among some of his first stops were Whit’s End and Bungalow Bar, two businesses that have shown their support for Murphy by turning to Currans for their meat supply. In his first video, Murphy interviewed chef Whitney Aycock as he cooked up the signature T-bone steak sourced by Currans, explaining the lengthy process to cook the mouthwatering meat just right. He also highlighted Whit’s outdoor heated tent space where people can enjoy whatever magic dish Whit whips up, on the premises. In his following video, Murphy spoke with Bungalow Bar manager Katy Grey as she explained some of their upcoming specials for Valentine’s Day, and he went behind the scenes with one of the chefs who prepared the Signature Burger, using ground beef from Currans. However, it’s not just restaurants that use Curran’s products that Murphy hopes to support. Some of the upcoming spots he plans to put a spotlight on include Super Burrito, Jamesons, Happy Jacks, Kennedy’s and his neighbor, BrazMex Café. “I could probably spend the next six months doing these,” Murphy said of the many options. “This is just a little part on my end to give back and put these places on the map and give someone who may not be thinking of that place a thought,” Murphy said. “My main tip from Tom is to support all of our local restaurants,” he said. “Tips from Tom” can be seen on Facebook at Facebook.com/ Curranssuperior.meats or @ CurransSuperiorMeats on Instagram.

Super Bowl For 4 From Mount Sinai South Nassau In recognition of their tireless efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, the NFL is sending four Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital employees to participate in the NFL’s Super Bowl experience for front-line workers. The four hospital employees – two physicians, an emergency department nurse and a respiratory therapist – are among the 7,500 vaccinated health care workers who will receive free tickets from the NFL to the Super Bowl in Tampa as part of the NFL’s salute. The four Mount Sinai South Nassau employees who will participate in the gameday experience are: Eileen Carolan, RN, Emergency Department nurse; Iris Halem, Director of Respiratory Therapy; Frank Coletta, MD, Chief of Critical Care and Pulmonary Medicine; and Adhi Sharma, MD, Chief Medical Officer. They all have received their first and second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. The Mount Sinai South Nassau staff members will be in-

cluded among the approximately 7,500 other health care heroes at this year’s Super Bowl and around the country that the NFL will recognize through a variety of special moments both in the stadium and during the CBS broadcast of the game. Each of hospital’s four staff members chosen played a different role to support the more than 1,600 COVID-19 patients treated at Mount Sinai South Nassau during the pandemic. A full-time Emergency Department nurse for Mount Sinai South Nassau since 1990, Ms. Carolan cancelled a planned vacation last spring so that she would not miss a single shift during the height of the first patient surge. Throughout the duration of the pandemic, she has served at the hospital’s on-campus and Long Beach-based emergency departments. When the first COVID-19 patients arrived, Ms. Halem’s role as Director of Respiratory Therapy took on a new urgen-

cy. She worked side by side with nurses and doctors to provide respiratory treatments to severely ill patients. During the height of the pandemic in April, Ms. Halem was coordinating the care of 97 patients on ventilators and 110 on bipap therapy. As Chief of Critical Care and Pulmonary Medicine, Dr. Coletta oversees the treatment of the most critically ill COVID-19 patients. He has spearheaded the training of hospital physicians, physician assistants, and medical residents from all medical disciplines to assist critical care, emergency medicine, and respiratory physicians as they treated the more than 1,600 hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Dr. Sharma, the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer, has provided steadfast leadership in Mount Sinai South Nassau’s ongoing response to COVID-19, overseeing the medical staff ’s response to the pandemic and coordinating with the

Mount Sinai Health System to ensure the hospital’s patients and staff had access to the latest therapies, equipment, and research. Dr. Sharma helped lead the hospital and its clinical staff to meet daily unforeseen challenges, reallocating resources and redeploying staff to Mount Sinai South Nassau as needed during the yearlong and unprecedented public health crisis. According to the NFL, all the health care workers at the Super Bowl will have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. It is using this special initiative as an opportunity to promote the importance of vaccination and appropriate health practices, including wearing masks in public settings. Super Bowl COVID-19 protocols include mandatory mask-wearing, social-distancing, podded seating, touchless in-stadium experiences at concessions, restrooms, and security checkpoints, as well as controlled entry and egress.

Beach 116th Meets The Meat Up Grill

By Katie McFadden

It’s time to meet up and eat up on Beach 116th Street. Serving up quality beach bites from burgers to chicken sandwiches, salads and more, The Meat Up Grill is gearing up to open on Friday. Many got a taste of The Meat Up Grill when it came to Riis Park as a summer pop-up in 2017 and then a seasonal restaurant in 2018 as owner and chef Michael Fiore showed Rockaway just how good beach classics like burgers and fries could be. Now The Meat Up will have a place to call home all year long. The Meat Up Grill, located at 165 Beach 116th Street, is opening on Friday, February 5. The Meat Up Grill, offering takeout, delivery and indoor dining when permitted, puts a unique spin on beachside favorites. “The Meat Up is a beach concept. It has that beach vibe, and the products are all familiar items to everyone, but done a little different. It’s clean, simple and fun food that puts a smile on everyone’s face,” Fiore said. Among some of those smile-inducing menu items are the burgers and chicken sandwiches, which can be done in a number of ways. The burgers feature ¼ pound brisket beef patties served on Marty’s potato buns. Maybe go for the classic, The Meat Up, topped with lettuce, onion, pickles and M.U.G. burger sauce, or double it up an add some bacon and cheese for the O.G. Venture out and shoot for the Yay Yo!, a burger topped with provolone, spicy ham, hot cherry peppers,

roasted garlic mayo, lettuce, onion and pickles, or the unique PB&J burger, topped with peanut butter from Claudettes, grape jelly, smoked bacon, and yes, pickles, which Fiore says are a must have. If chicken is more your speed, maybe try the classic Mr. Crunch, a fried chicken sandwich with pickles, lettuce and white barbecue sauce, or maybe spice it up with the Ko Chi Crunch, topped with kimchee BBQ, slaw, gochujang, mayo and house pickles. Try a unique spin on a classic with the Ultimate Truffle Grilled Cheese featuring fontina, gruyere and truffle-honey drizzle on Texas toast. Pair it with fries, onion rings, mac and cheese or go all out with the chipwreck— loaded fries packed with bacon, French onion sauce, scallions and cotija cheese, and you will be full all day. But if you prefer something on the lighter side, Fiore has that too, with a selection of salads and bowls. No matter what your appetite, the Meat Up has something for all. “I think we’ve put together a menu that’s well-founded for everyone,” Fiore said. Michael Fiore, who’s been a Rockaway resident for as long as he’s been behind the kitchen, knows what it takes to make good food. He brings with him 30 years of experience, including partnering with celebrity caterer Mary Giuliani and owning former restaurant Tempo in Park Slope. A few years ago, Fiore got a taste of what it means to serve his community at Riis Park and the experience gave him the green light that it was time to open a more permanent spot. At the beginning of the year, he started scoping out locations and was originally going to open on Restaurant Row in Rockaway Beach, but as the pandemic hit, delays forced a change

To advertise in The Rockaway Times call 718-634-3030 · ads@RockawayTimes.com

of plans. But lucky for Fiore, when one door closed, another opened, and he found a location a bit closer to the beach on Beach 116th Street. The coronavirus pandemic may have changed some plans, but it didn’t deter Fiore from going full steam ahead on a brick-and-mortar shop, with the main premise of his business model being takeout. And in that time, he also found time to make the pandemic a little easier on others. In the early months of the pandemic, Fiore launched Soup 4 Support under The Meat Up Grill, raising money to deliver soups to frontline responders and healthcare professionally throughout New York City. Making the soups out of his catering kitchen in Sunnyside, Fiore was able to deliver more than 8,000 soups to those on the frontlines. When the pandemic started to slow down, Fiore got to work on his next steps. After finding the perfect location, the build out began in August and Fiore spent four months transforming what was Georgina’s Bakery, into the home of The Meat Up Grill. The new location offers an inviting, casual feel that makes you feel like you’re in your home kitchen. With light painted brickwork, floral centerpieces on wooden tables, cookbooks on the shelves and a giant Rockaway Beach mural painted by artist Geoff Rawling, The Meat Up gives that hometown vibe, and with great customer service and a menu that you’ll be craving. It's a welcome new addition

that will quickly become a community staple—again. Some got a sneak peek with a family and friends opening last weekend, and locals who have turned to The Meat Up for their holiday catering needs already know what’s in store. In addition to the regular menu, Fiore will have specials, and his catering menus for holidays and everyday catering, will also be available. Fiore is looking forward to opening his doors for all to experience it. “It’s very exciting. This is something I’ve always wanted to do out here for many years. The Meat Up has recognition and a good identity and the feedback I’ve been getting has been so positive,” Fiore said. “I’m thrilled to finally open.” After The Meat Up Grill opens on Friday, Fiore expects to be open Wednesdays through Sundays, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and may expand weekend hours to offer brunch and open seven days a week in the future. BYOB will also be permitted. For a full menu and online ordering, head to www.TheMeatUpGrill.com or call 518-7121361 to order.

District 31 Candidate: Selvena Brooks-Powers By Marina Cregan

Lifelong Southeast Queens resident, Selvena Brooks-Powers, is running for District 31’s City Council seat in the upcoming special election. As a homeowner in the Rockaways for the past 13 years, Brooks-Powers expressed to The Rockaway Times that she decided to run because she feels that the community has been continuously under-resourced. When she saw the lack of resources being distributed to the district at the beginning of the pandemic, she felt that she needed to stand up for her community. “I have been engaged in District 31 and worked with a number of community members and leaders, and all I see is the lack of equity and spaces it pertains to in our district. There is so much I’d like to accomplish, because as I see it, we have so many pressing priorities in our district,” Brooks-Powers said. She already has experience working for both the Senate and the Mayor’s office, and currently serves as the Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises compliance project manager with the JFK Redevelopment Program. Now Brooks-Powers is hoping to continue to serve the community in a bigger leadership role. One major issue Brooks-Powers hopes to tackle is the need for more quality healthcare facilities, which was especially made clear as the peninsula was hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic. Throughout, Brooks-Powers and her friends helped donate masks to the Addabbo Health Center and St. John’s Hospital so they could stay protected on the frontlines. Additionally, she helped schedule testing appointments for seniors at the Addabbo Health Center. Having worked at Peninsula Hospital before it closed, Brooks-Powers knows firsthand the value of quality healthcare on the peninsula. If elected, she says she will fight to have a new hospital established in the Rockaways, especially one with a trauma

center. Because the nearest trauma hospital is Jamaica Hospital, Brooks-Powers stated that this trip in the event of an emergency is essentially a life or death trip. “A trauma center here, affiliated with a larger hospital, would make sure that we have expanded quality healthcare on this peninsula,” Brooks-Powers said. Brooks-Powers also wishes to tackle the lack of resources in local schools. Having attended public schools within the district her whole life, Brooks-Powers feels that she understands what it is like when a school does not have the proper resources. She expressed her disappointment in the Dept. of Education regarding reopening schools and ensuring that each student has the resources they need to work remotely. “New York City is one of the biggest cities in the world, and there are still so many students that do not have the devices they need for remote schooling,” Brooks-Powers said. She also noted that throughout the City, Queens public schools received the fewest number of resources from the Dept. of Education. Brooks-Powers noted how important it is to get these resources for the students since remote schooling has become so prevalent. She hopes to advocate for public schools to be properly funded, so that students can receive a proper educational experience in more equitable ways. Brooks-Powers believes that in addition to the physical resources students need for remote learning, our schools should start focusing on the long term effects that remote

learning has on our students. She elaborated on the idea that if students are falling behind due to remote learning, then our schools need to create more tutoring sessions, as well as create preemptive steps that will ensure their success for their futures. As a Rockaway resident, Brooks-Powers recognizes the unique needs of the peninsula. Located by the coast, she advocates for resiliency developments that will improve our infrastructure. Additionally, she wishes to create truly affordable housing for Rockaway residents so if they choose to do so, people can eventually become homeowners. If elected, Brooks-Powers would like to implement a path to homeownership, by creating a fund and community based organizations for potential buyers. She told The Rockaway Times that, “When people feel like they have a stake in the community, it takes on a whole new life, as well. New developments need to be affordable, and people indigenous to our community have the ability to stay and remain here.” In regard to the peninsula’s lack of quality transportation options, Brooks-Powers will work with agencies to address the need for enhancing the commute for District 31 residents. “Without access to transportation, you don’t have access to certain types of jobs that may pay better,” said Brooks-Powers. Brooks-Powers is also running on a platform that advocates for relief for our local businesses. “With no uniform policy in place, Rockaway residents should not have to travel to Long Island to experience indoor dining if they wish to eat at a restaurant,” Brooks-Powers said. She expressed how much this hurts our businesses, and the businesses in Queens cannot possibly survive if these rules continue. Brooks-Powers said she recently walked the merchant corridor on Mott Avenue and spoke to many business owners who expressed the chal-

lenges they have endured since the beginning of the pandemic. If elected, she plans to fight for our local businesses to receive grant money and loans. “The City did not do a good job with the way they distributed funding and support of the businesses in Queens, a majority of the funding went to businesses in Manhattan. When businesses close their doors, we’re also losing jobs for people that live in this community and rely on these businesses,” Brooks-Powers said. She expressed that one of her top priorities if elected will be to help businesses receive the funding they need to bounce back from the pandemic. Because of the diversity that exists throughout District 31, Brooks-Powers also advocates for public safety for all community members. She believes that it is extremely important to rebuild the relationship between community members and law enforcement, ensuring that every person feels safe. “This is an important opportunity for people to reimagine what community policing actually looks like,” Brooks-Powers said. If elected, she will advocate for transparency, fairness, and accountability for law enforcement officers. Brooks-Powers believes that if the district creates more community policing forces, then community members will start to participate in bridging the divide that currently exists. These are just a few of the many issues Brooks-Powers, a democrat running on the Powers 4 Queens line, wishes to address if elected as District 31’s City Councilwoman. “I have served this community for the past 17 years, and I do not wish to stop now,” Brooks-Powers said. “I know the issues this district has because I live here and experience them every day. I am very committed and passionate about serving my community because the issues in Southeast Queens and the Rockaways deserve to be recognized.”

Gratitude If you are feeling a bit stuck and tired of the same old thing, I can assure you, you are not alone. The good thing is we are now in February, that much closer to spring and summer. As I write this column, we are in a winter storm and I know how lucky I am to be in a warm, cozy home. My heart goes out to the essential workers who continue to plow through work every day, regardless of weather, Covid, or anything else that makes it difficult to go to work. Please know we are forever grateful for your selfless service. As I look out my window, there

is a gentleman making a pass with his snow blower. Every time there is a snowstorm, he comes from a few blocks away and clears our pathway. He is a retired Marine and NYPD officer. Always in service and expects nothing in return. Thank you, Mike, your good deeds do not go unnoticed. My way out of feeling stuck is to simply acknowledge, sit with it and be ok with not being 100%. I set my goals to move out of this funk by practicing some selfcare routines. The following are some tools I have used to help shift my perspective from nega-

tive to positive. The first step is to be grateful. Naturally, yoga is at the top of my list. It is the ultimate release for mind, body and soul. Moving your body with a focus on your breath. On this snow day, we are grateful for virtual livestream and Paulette has guided the most beautiful gentle class from her bedroom with her friendly cat, Tuna. It is absolutely perfect and everyone in the virtual room is ready to start their day with some optimism. We are taught a compassion mudra that brings us calm and peace, encouraging us to be compassionate to ourselves. Grateful for this special community. It has saved many of us! Thank you! Massages release tension in your body and feels amazing. We have some of the best massage therapists here in Rockaway Beach. They take all the necessary precautions to make you feel safe and whole. I highly recommend this form of therapy to help your body and mind release that which no longer serves you. Grateful for massages! Reiki is a form of energy heal-

Page 27 ing and lifts the heaviness within. Today in yoga we started with a self-reiki session and it felt simply divine to lay our hands over specific parts of our body. We have the ability to heal with reiki. Meditation clears my head and gives me clarity. Sitting quietly, becoming present with this moment and allowing the thoughts to quiet by learning to bear witness to everything. It is not always pleasant but it is a practice that will help heal and calm the brain. Helping to clear the lenses of your eyes to create a path of serenity. Somehow it shifts our emotions and allows for positive energy to flow. As you empty your head, you become full of gratitude. We reside in a space that provides security and strength. As we receive the benefits of meditation, we begin to offer our peace to the world. May you live with peace, May you be healthy, May you be free of suffering. Thank you for reading this column. It’s not always easy to find positive thoughts but I keep trying!

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Tuberculosis (TB) is an ancient disease that was relatively uncommon here in the U.S until the 1980s. Despite the fact that it was rare, there were some famous historical figures, for example Doc Holliday, who suffered from it. It gave rise to sanitariums in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century as it was thought that fresh air, rather than the highly polluted air then present in cities, would help cure it. There was no treatment for it until the advent of antibiotics in the mid twentieth century. Because those who had it lost a great deal of weight, it was called consumption. TB is an urban disease and is spread much the same way as coronavirus, that is by droplets spewed into the air by coughing. However, TB is difficult to catch and usually requires multiple or prolonged contacts

The Rockaway Times

TB

with an infected person. In most healthy people, should they catch TB, their immune system can keep it in check for years, if not decades. This is called latent TB. People with latent TB have no symptoms. TB is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis, or M tuberculosis. A related bacterium, M leprae, causes leprosy. In the 1980s, with the advent of HIV/AIDS, a virulent, highly resistant strain of TB called M avium intracellularae, made its appearance in these individuals who had severely compromised immune systems due to AIDs. Mycobacteria have hardy, strong cell walls which makes them very resistant to many antibiotics. In addition, they grow very slowly in culture media. In a culture, it takes M tuberculosis about 20 days for one cell division cycle. For comparison, it takes E coli about 20 minutes. As noted above, TB infection without symptoms is called latent TB. Worldwide, there are

about 2 billion individuals with latent TB. A skin test called a PPD test, where a fluid containing protein (Purified Protein Derivative) from M tuberculosis is injected under the skin, can detect latent TB. Because the immune system of someone with latent TB has been activated, there will be redness and swelling at the injection site. Because treatments like chemotherapy, steroids, and anti-rejection medications following an organ transplant can weaken the immune system and convert latent TB into active TB, a PPD test to detect latent TB will be given before starting treatment. BCG (bacillus Calmette Guerin), a TB vaccine, can cause a false-positive PPD. It is used in Europe and most of the world, but not here in the U.S. because it can cause a positive PPD and is ineffective when given to adults. The symptoms of active TB include cough for more than three weeks, hemoptysis (coughing up blood),

chest pain with breathing and coughing, weight loss, fatigue, night sweats, fever, chills, and loss of appetite. Active TB causes pneumonia, which can be heard with a stethoscope and seen on chest X ray. TB can spread outside the lungs to the spine, kidneys, and brain. Because of its strong cell wall and slow growth rate, TB is difficult to treat and treatment can last well over a year. Treatment includes antibioticssuch as isoniazid (INH), rifampin, ethambutol, and pyrazinamide. The CDC recommends that those at risk for latent TB, namely those with HIV/AIDS, IV drug addicts, those in contact with an infected person, those who work in prisons and healthcare facilities, and those from areas where TB is common (Latin America, Africa, and Asia), should be screened with a PPD. Rockin & Stockin – The Short Squeeze. By JP Stathis

Although there hasn’t been much on the music front this month, the stock markets have been doing plenty of rocking! If you watched the news or looked at social media in the last week, you have probably seen a lot of discussions regarding GameStop(GME) and the short selling phenomenon. So, before we get into what happened, let me explain quickly what short selling actually is. Shorting a stock is a trading strategy which means you are borrowing a stock you don’t currently own, and you will buy that stock in the future and return the shares to the lender. This strategy is actually used quite often by investors and traders to hedge their long positions, so if the market tanks they have some downside protection. Unlike buying a stock, a short seller is hoping a company’s stock price will decrease. So for example, if I short sell 100 GME shares at $20 and the stock drops down

to $10 then I can then go and buy 100 GME at $10 and return the shares to the lender, making $10 per share minus any borrow costs. However, if the stock shoots up to $100 a share and I need to close out my position I have to buy it at $100 and I lose $80 per share. Even though I have been a risk-taker most of my life, I still do not short stocks. Unlike buying stock where you can only lose what you invest, the upside risk is infinite, so in this case seller beware!

To advertise in The Rockaway Times call 718-634-3030 · ads@RockawayTimes.com

Now what happened with GME is that there were some multi-billion dollar hedge funds (which is a type of investment company) who were massively shorting the stock because GameStop still relies on physical sales and like many other brick and mortar companies, they have been decimated by the pandemic. But what the hedge funds didn’t expect was that there would be an army of Average Joes who teamed up through a group called “WallStreet-Bets” and felt the stock was

undervalued and wanted to punish the Hedge Funds. So, they coordinated to start buying up the stock which created a buying frenzy and drove the price of GME to skyrocket as the hedge funds had to start scrambling to cover their short positions. GME which was a $17 stock in the beginning of 2021 quickly became a $325 stock by the end of the month, and at one point traded as high as $483! So if you bought 100 shares of GME on Jan 4 for $1,700, your position was worth $32,500 on January 29! Then to add to an already complex situation, some of the trading platforms (such as Robinhood) where trades are executed, started limiting and restricting transactions in GME and some other names which had large amount of short interest due to the extreme volatility. This left many people outraged such as Dave Portnoy (Barstool Sports & DDTG) as he believes this was done intentionally just to help bail out the hedge funds so they could close out Continued on page 31

rOCKIN & STOCKIN

Continued from Page 30

their short positions at lower prices and didn’t allow for a free and fair stock market. Portnoy added “I think it’s criminal, I think there has to be an investigation, I think people need to go to jail.” Robinhood, which is ironically named after a tale of righteous outlaws who fight against the injustice of wealthy people, was actually doing the opposite by bailing out the rich. Who knows what this will lead

to in the future regarding short selling stocks, but there is at least some hope for now for some of the brick and mortar shops. In the classic tale of David vs Goliath, almost everyone loves to root for the underdog. When you lock millions of people inside their homes for an extended period of time, they will eventually get creative and figure out ways to break the system. Even if it was for a short period of time, the Average Joes figured out how to level the playing field vs the Hedge Fund Bros.

Fire Damages Yeshiva Dormitory

On Friday, January 29, a fire tore through the third floor of the dormitory for the Yeshiva Mercaz HaTorah of Belle

Harbor, causing significant damage and displacing its occupants. At around 10 a.m., FDNY responded to a call of a fire on the top floor of the dormito ry located at 512 Beach 130th Street. As an added obstacle, firefighters were faced with below freezing temperatures and high winds as they battled the blaze. However, by 12 p.m., the fire was under control. All of the occupants were removed from the building and none sustained injuries. The fire and water caused significant damage to the building and the occupants have since been relocated. A firefighter did sustain injuries but was treated by paramedics on scene. The cause of the fire is still unknown and is under investigation.

Together And Alone Dear Enchantress, I have always loved dressing up, as far back as when I was little. Since I hit my 20s, and probably before, I got really self-conscious. I feel myself holding back from what I really want to say. I agree with people when I really don't agree with them. I have very strong-minded friends, and it's not that I disagree with them, but the way they say things feels so harsh and I get embarrassed, so I do weird things to try and pretend I am "with" them, but really I am hoping no one sees me, then I smile and squint to avoid anyone who is looking at them and

giving them a dirty look. I like being outdoors with them, or in any kind of party environment, because it's loud and no one notices, but in a supermarket or a restaurant, it's a nightmare, especially these days because everything is so spaced out. I am actually grateful for these masks, because I bite my lip and really try to hide when they get loud. Some of them don't even really wear their masks. I don't know if I'm a bad friend, or what my problem is, how do I relax with them? How do I be myself, when I'm not even really sure what that is? Dear Mask-er-ador, WOW! You have some amaz-

ing self-awareness! And I see that you don't see it as a good thing. You are a sensitive soul, and probably resonate with black sheep. I also feel your pain and resonate with much of what you shared. I assume these have been your friends for a long time, and you think you're not good at making new ones. Is that true? I invite you to be nice to yourself, I hear that you are making yourself wrong in all your feelings of not feeling good around your friends. To be frank, it sounds like if you were really, really truthful, you don't like hanging with these people, but you also don't see who else you would hang out with. The fears of being self-expressed are normal, and oh so human, especially when you have a crew, where no one else seems to have self-awareness. You ask about how to relax around them. Well Sister, you can do some preparation before you hang out with them, or my truest answer is, choose wisely where and when you hang out with them. Know it's ok that you say, "not today" or

The Rockaway Times "not tonight" if you feel total dread. Focus on what you do like doing with them and say "yes" to plans when you know the place will be outdoors or noisy enough that no one notices, they will not change. So, you can be choosy and discerning where you go with them and find things that you enjoy doing by yourself. I also advise to diversify your interests, once a week try something new on zoom, a class or workshop, and put yourself in different company virtually and see how you feel. You are allowed to see what the world has to offer and to learn about who you really are. Wrestle Talk

ROYAL RUMBLE RESULTS AND WRESTLING NEWS By Eric Jayden

Results from the WWE Royal Rumble Pay-Per-View Event live from Orlando, Florida on January 31, 2021: Shayna Baszler/Nia Jax defeated Charlotte Flair/Asuka to become the WWE Women's Tag Team Champions. WWE Champion Drew McIntyre defeated Goldberg. Smackdown Women's Champion Sasha Banks defeated Carmella. Roman Reigns defeated Kevin Owens. Bianca Belair wins the 2021 Women's Royal Rumble Match. Edge wins the 2021 Men's Royal Rumble Match. The Match of the Night was the Men's Royal Rumble Match and a huge win by the Superstar Edge. This one actually caught me and the entire world by surprise. Edge made history by becoming the third per-

son to win the Royal Rumble Match while entering at the number one spot. Now, this leaves many to wonder whether or not the WWE is going to have Edge face Drew McIntyre or Roman Reigns at this year's WrestleMania. In Wrestling News: Rumors are still surfacing about the possible return of Becky Lynch back to the WWE. There are no words on what plans the WWE has for Becky Lynch at this time, but hopes are that she may return at this year's WrestleMania. As reported by Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE Superstar Mia Yim was originally set to compete in the Women's Royal Rumble Match but subsequently tested positive for Covid-19 a day before the match was scheduled. Mia had entered a period of quarantine and we here at Wrestle Talk wish her a speedy recovery.

The word backstage at the WWE is that former WWE Superstar Carlito is scheduled to appear on the February 1 edition of RAW in a trial position of TV Producer for the company. We wish Carlito all the best! As reported by Ringside News, WWE CEO Vince McMahon was not present for the Royal Rumble Pay-Per-View. No reason was given for his absence, but it was noted that Triple H was placed in charge of the show. News and rumors still continue to come forward about New Japan Pro Wrestling Superstar Jay White, that he might be leaving to the WWE very soon. There is no word on whether or not Jay White has agreed to sign with New Japan Pro Wrestling with reports suggesting his contract was set to expire last month. We will keep you updated. The question of the week

comes from Alan S. in Rockaway Park and he said, "Great to see that your column is back. I wanted to ask you if there is a possible return of Stone Cold Steve Austin to the ring?" Thank you, Alan, and it's great to be back. In regards to Steve Austin, currently there are no rumors or any news of him making a possible return to the ring. He is currently the host of The Steve Austin Broken Skull Challenge on the WWE Network. If I hear anything, Alan, I'll let everyone know here on Wrestle Talk.
