Black History Month: Ways to Celebrate this February By Kami-Leigh Agard

February is Black History Month, an annual celebration of achievements and rich contributions by African-Americans in U.S. history. In this Rockaway Times month-long series, we give our readers a smattering of facts, events, films and other cultural experiences happening that serve as a teaching moment for the entire family. FACT: Black History Month, also known as African-American History Month grew out of Negro History Week, the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African-Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. As proclaimed by President Trump, the theme of this year’s observance is “African Americans and the Vote,” which coincides with the 150th anniversary of the 15th Amendment, which in 1870 prohibited the government from denying or abridging a citizen’s right to vote based on “race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” Today, this guarantee is enforced primarily throughout the Voting Rights Act of 1965, an enduring legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Civil Rights movement. Oh, Joy We rolled into Florida and froze our patooties off. After mid-70s, nice-as-can-be weather in Nowhere, Georgia, our blood must’ve thinned because we were not ready for 41 degrees and a frigid wind chill in the Sunshine State. Forty-one is harder in Florida than anywhere else. It makes you mad. I’ve come all the way to Florida for this? I’ve just seen a hundred Waffle Houses, two thousand Publix, a Walgreens for every palm tree and the same Twilight Zone strip mall for the past 200 miles. And now I get to freeze? The Gulf of Mexico looked great—for a polar plunge. But we made it. If you’ve been following, Rick Horan and I set out on a long bike ride from South Carolina to Florida. Clearwater was our destination. At mile 583, we pedaled down Cleveland Street and raised our cold hands in triumph. We’d completed twelve straight days of biking, just about 50 miles a day. For the first 10 days of the trek, I had dreamed of the cold beer that I would celebrate with. On arrival day, a hot toddy was

more like it. Which I don’t think they have so I just warmed my hands over the Margherita pizza we ordered. Instead of bikes, we looked like we had arrived by dog sled as our teeth sent out Morse code sounds for help. Clark of Lewis and Clark shouted, “Oh, joy,” when he saw the Pacific Ocean after their grueling expedition. Upon view of downtown Clearwater, I muttered, “It’s effin’ freezing.” In fact, I said it many times. Even in the grip of the arctic air, I managed to chuckle at the accompanying photo. Your day could really go in one of two directions. Our eyebrows had icicles as we checked into our Airbnb in nearby Largo, Florida. We defrosted the next day as the thermometer registered a balmy 56. We had chosen Clearwater as the final destination because it’s the site of a basketball tournament held each year in January. I wanted to see what the Tampa Bay Masters was all about and Rick, who can’t play basketball for shinola, was happy just to join the bike ride adventure. The tourney was an eye-opener. Guys from all over the country—even a team from Lithuania—came to play hoops over a four-day period. And the catch was, every player was over 40 years old. Almost two dozen guys were over 70. That’s seven-oh, playing basketball. There were divisions of 40+, 50+, 60+, 65+ and 70+. Almost 500 guys—and wait, one woman!—showed up to play. The young lady was in the over-50 division and I saw enough of her to know she could more than hold her own. When I saw a couple of 75-year-old guys fighting for po-

sition under the basket and then hustling up court on the next play, I felt like a weenie for complaining about my sore butt from bike riding. These guys were too busy living to be complaining about anything. Little did I know, the Tampa Bay Masters tournament was just one stop on the circuit. There are similar tourneys run throughout the year all over the country and many of the guys I met in Clearwater travel to and play in these games. Through all levels, the comp was good and most everyone seemed to be playing with a smile on their face. As fate would have it, one team needed a warm body after a calf muscle pull sidelined an old-timer. A couple of guys recruited me to play and after some resistance, I gave in—not knowing the only shorts they had were for a 7-foot 350-pound guy who last played in a harem.

Anyway, these guys didn’t know if I could play or not, so they, understandably, kept me on the bench until the second half with the game pretty much decided. After the game, one guy called me a “high energy player” which I took as an insult. He might as well have handed me a sports-

I couldn’t get on the court with these things but I didn’t want to insult the guys who were nice enough to ask me to play. I was dying. The slightly grainy photos attached to this column look like Big Foot photos from the National Enquirer but I’m here to swear it was all true—although look at the referee’s expression! He was there and he can’t believe it. At the last second, the team captain decided I didn’t have to play in drapes and was ok’d to play in Graybeard shorts. Good thing. I had been imagining the

manship trophy. But I guess it wasn’t meant as a put-down because he pressed me to play in their next game. I was flattered but then made my best move of the week: the Irish exit. I got out alive, in one piece, and celebrated my birthday with my bride who will remain nameless. She’d flown in for the occasion. It was my birthday but I raised my glass to these guys. They get a sweat; they stay in shape. They make new friends. Some drink beer; some don’t. They all agree it beats golf and complaining about the cold. When they see a basketball court, they say, in one way or another: Oh, joy!

Demolition of Landmark Memories— The End of an Era for The Irish Circle By Kami-Leigh Agard

When a photo of the former Community House building being demolished went viral on Facebook page, Friends of Rockaway Beach (FoRB), locals felt as though they were sucker-punched, bemoaning the end of an era for an unofficial landmark full of local history and memories. Since 1983, the iconic building at the corner of Beach 102nd and Rockaway Beach Boulevard, has served as a commu-

nity gathering space—bearing names such as Schilling’s Roadhouse, The Irish Circle, The New Irish Circle, and finally, Community House. It has long been a place where locals met loved ones, celebrated momentous occasions and created memo-

ries worth remembering, and some they couldn’t quite remember after a night out. That history come down, piece by piece, sparking heavy reaction. Many clamored on Facebook, expressing some of those bittersweet memories with one

local lamenting, “Nothing really changed in 40 years. Just too bad they tore down what should have been a landmark.” Others added fire to rumors that the site is going to be transformed into low-income housing, overpriced condos or even a homeless shelter. In April 2019, the building was sold by Kelley Brooke to the Marcal Group, the same developer behind the One Sixteen Condos on Beach 116th Street. However, according to Marcal representative Seth Caller, it isn’t condos in store for the land’s future, but market-rate rentals. Understandably for bornand-bred Rockaway natives, the demolition of property felt like the last call for Rockaway’s heyday as Irish Town. ter year; and also based on our Beach 116th project and in this part of town closer to the Beach 90s, we see this project as having a real rental opportunity for residents,” Caller said. Caller emphasized that the Marcal Group only wants to build toward enhancing Rockaway’s housing options. “The Marcal Group is not doing any low-income housing or building shelters in the Rockaways. We’re too invested and we are a part of the community now. From our projects on Beach 116th and now on Beach 102nd, and other developments that we’re looking at, we just want to bring the best housing options for the neighborhood properties that we own and that’s our intention,” he said. Caller said building plans are still being finalized with the Department of Buildings. The timeline for completion is 18 to 24 months. However, despite the new building development, the site will always be a landmark of memories and a symbol of the Rockaway that was.

As the wrecking ball already leveled most of the site located at 101-19 Rockaway Beach Blvd, ironically across the street is Dayton Tower’s West high rises, which was once home to scores of Irish pubs that were torn down to make room for the co-ops. The building’ demolition is yet another new start for the future of Rockaway. According to Caller, the Marcal Group’s 45,000 square feet, three-story apartment development is only going to add to the area with rentals, parking and amenity spaces, including for retail. “We understand that there might be some personal feelings about what the old project was, but I can say that this building will be a landmark of its own. Once it’s complete, it’s going to be one of the most unique looking buildings in the neighborhood. What was there before was great, but was exclusively for restaurant use, and in order to make this project financially viable and being able to build within the zoning calculations in this neighborhood,

Baxter’s Hotel and the Brisas del Mar restaurant on Beach 116th were ordered to vacate the premises immediately after a Department of Buildings inspector found “the sewer system discharging into garbage cans and plastic containers” and not the city sewer line. The situation “presents an imminent danger to occupants” and “public safety.” Owner John Baxter claims a neighbor on Beach 115th Street caused the sewer line damage and he is suing. He also said

Baxter said he is unsure which agency enforces evictions in these cases and can’t get an answer from Buildings. ***** Just down a few storefronts on Beach 116th Street, a number of buildings are for sale. Rockaway Beach Dance Company Represents Community Beyond the Dance Floor By Katie McFadden

With a new decade comes a fresh start and a local dance company has a “new 2020 vision for this year.” With a

new owner at the helm, a new name and more, innovative ways to prepare dancers for the world of competitive dance, while molding them into well-rounded individuals for the future, Rockaway Beach Dance Company is leaving its mark on the community. At the end of 2019, local resident Tiffany Turchi took on the tough role of continuing the legacy left behind by the late Elaine Freeburg. Turchi became owner of what was Mrs. Elaine’s School of Dance, a popular local dance studio, launched by Freeburg in 2009. In March 2016, Freeburg died after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Freeburg’s legacy lived on through her studio, with friends and staff, like Turchi, who believed in her mission. As a dance-mom since registering her then two-year-old daughter for classes at Mrs. Elaine’s when it first opened, and later director of the studio, Turchi didn’t hesitate to step into the role as owner when an opportunity arose, continuing Freeburg’s legacy, while carrying on the torch to illuminate the bright future of dance in the community. And what better way to do so than by rebranding the

company made up of mostly local dancers and staff, to carry the community name? Rockaway Beach Dance Company (RBDC) is now proudly representing its hometown in everything it does. “Elaine created this amazing, not only business, but a beautiful space for the community that has always been about the dance family. We wanted to continue what she created, so her legacy lives on. Our students remain, our staff remains. We’re still honoring what she created, but we’re moving on and evolving. We’re aiming to meet the bigger demand of a more competitive dance world. We’re calling it our new 2020 vision,” Turchi said. As RBDC, while dancers continue to impress in the world of competitive dance, there will be no question of where these dancers come from and the ideals they represent beyond their footwork. Rockaway Beach Dance Company strives to not only give dancers the tools they need to take their dance dreams as far as they want, but lessons to carry on throughout other aspects of their lives. “We believe if you can dream it, you can achieve it. Our students are encouraged to become technically skilled, while at the same time, we build their self-esteem and teach them teamwork, respect, kindness, leadership skills, and most of all, to have fun,” Turchi said. “We’d love for our kids to become professional dancers. We have plenty of students in art schools and many that continue dance in middle school and high school, and

while we’d love for them to go on in their dance career, we’d rather they go on to be employable, kind adults, so what they’re learning here is more than just a dance education.” Students who choose to learn through RBDC can pick up skills in almost any genre of dance. From ballet to jazz, hip hop, tap, lyrical, modern, contemporary, pointe, choreography and tumbling, whatever a dancer dreams of, RBDC offers it at any level. All ages, from age two to adult are welcome and whether they want to learn dance recreationally or to take their skills to the next level and compete, RBDC helps bring those dreams alive. RBDC also offers tools beyond dance skill. They offer fine arts classes, taught by Turchi herself, plus things like yoga for dancers, nutrition and fitness classes. They’re also bringing new elements to the studio. “We’re just starting mommy and me movement classes and we’re really excited about it,” Turchi said. While the professional dance staff has remained, RBDC has also opened their studio to guest teachers who can bring more expertise to the mix in a city where dancers come to live their dreams. “At our location, we have a perfect view of the skyline of the biggest and best city in the world for performance, dance and visual arts. People come to NYC from all over the world to take classes and we literally look at it every day. So we now have guest teachers that includes everything from Rockettes to professional dance company directors, Broadway cast members and choreographers come in to teach guest classes, and we bring our dancers on group trips to experience all that the city has to offer from shows to conventions, auditions and more,” Turchi said. RBDC not only brings the best of the dance world to its dancers, but the staff aims to

The Rockaway Times instill values in their students that they can carry on in their everyday lives. RBDC dancers actively participate in the Great Kindness Crusade. The competitive dance world can be ruthless, but those at RBDC are aiming to change that by showing kindness. At competitions, the dancers choose other dancers to give encouraging pins or cards with messages of kindness, showing love to a competitor for anything as simple as appreciating their costume or the way they express themselves, to respecting their first-place wins. “We’re hoping to spread a little kindness because we could always use more in this world,” Turchi said. They also show this kindness within their own community. This month, RBDC dancers will be participating in a competition where instead of trophies, the winners will be given money toward their charity of choice. RBDC has chosen to pay it forward locally and will be competing on behalf of Rockaway WISH. With Turchi on the board of directors at WISH, RBDC has been heavily involved with the local organization. RBDC dancers often volunteer at WISH events and learn at a young age how this local organization gives back to others in the community. “They’re learning that dance is about more than just a big win. Winning can come in other forms and they’re using the power of dance for more than just a form of entertainment,” Turchi said. With RBDC, Turchi hopes to continue the goal of teaching students not only how to perfect a pirouette or shuffle, but how to make the world a better place. “While we strive for excellence in dance, there are a lot of life lessons to be learned in the studio and we’d not only like to continue that, but exceed what we’ve done before,” Turchi said. Rockaway Serves As a Leg to Stand On For New Amputee By Katie McFadden

Around May 2019, Bridget O’Connor went to Lily’s Nails to treat herself with a pedicure. However, what’s a routine, relaxing activity for many, served as a dose of a new reality O’Connor was facing. “I sat in the chair and saw one foot and then looked for the other and started bawling. I think it was at that moment that it hit me that I don’t have another foot to put into the water. I don’t have another leg to get massaged. My left leg is gone,” O’Connor said. On February 1, almost a year to the date of the incident that almost claimed her life, but instead launched her into a new life as an amputee, O’Connor returned to Lily’s Nails. It was the first time she had a pedicure on two feet in more than a year. This time, instead of tears, she smiled at her painted red toes on her prosthetic leg and foot. Looking at two pedicured feet—something that seems so simple—was a moment that symbolized how far O’Connor has come over the past year, and hope for the future. On February 12, 2019, O’Connor’s left leg was removed. However, the love and support of family, friends and the community has become a figurative new limb to stand on. Those who’ve stood beside O’Connor over the past year gave her the inner strength to get through the biggest challenge of her life, as she has learned to stand again. After an incident on February 3, 2019 that left O’Connor hospitalized, the loss of her left leg wasn’t as significant as what she stood to lose—everything. “I almost died,” O’Connor said. Reflecting on that February a year ago, as she fought for her life, O’Connor says it was her deceased grandfather and father who convinced her to hang on. “I think I died on the table. I saw my grandfather and father sending me back. They were wearing tuxedos in this white room and I said I wanted to go with them, and they said, ‘Go to the beat.’” The

more O’Connor kept running toward her loved ones, the further away she got. But they were directing her towards the beat—her heartbeat—the sign that she was still alive and had a reason to be. As she fell in and out of consciousness, inundated with pain medications, it was her family that had to make the tough decision that would keep O’Connor alive. “The doctor said that if they didn’t take her leg, she would die. Her kidneys were beginning to shut down at that point. They asked me, ‘what are you going to do?’ I said, ‘Take the leg. If that’s what’s going to save her life, take the leg,’” Bridget’s mother, Ann Marie O’Connor recalled about making a life-changing, yet life-saving decision for her daughter. “I don’t know if I could make that decision for someone else,” Bridget O’Connor said. “They saved my life.” It was a decision that would start a new way of life for O’Connor. After multiple surgeries to save her life, and two amputations to remove her leg above the knee, O’Connor’s new life with one less leg began. “They had me walking the next day. I had to get up and hop. I did three hops, went

back to my bed and threw up,” O’Connor recalled. From dealing with the post-surgery pain, to learning how to get around with a wheelchair, re-learning how to walk with a prosthetic leg and crutches, dealing with frustrating battles with insurance companies to fight for assistance, struggling with new mental health issues like anxiety, depression and PTSD, learning how to tackle everyday tasks such as cooking her own meals, to showering and getting dressed, the past year of her new life has been an uphill battle. However, through it all, she’s never done it alone. From the moment friends and family learned O’Connor was in Jamaica Hospital, fighting for her life, people were there. “The lobby was full of people waiting to see her, but they’d only allow two visitors at a time, so people took turns,” O’Connor’s brother, Liam O’Connor said. And they didn’t stop coming. When O’Connor was transferred to Beacon Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in late February, she was surprised by two friends waiting for her arrival. “The next day people started showing up to say hi and

they pulled me out of bed to do rehab when I didn’t want to move,” O’Connor said. Through O’Connor’s tragedy, Rockaway has done what Rockaway does best—come together for someone in need. Friends quickly organized efforts to help O’Connor in any way possible. From assisting her family with a food train, to donating gift cards to help her and her family, to constant support from The Graybeards, to even throwing a well-attended party at the Knights of Columbus on O’Connor’s behalf, the community made it clear that they weren’t going to let O’Connor fall. “The amount of people that came to visit me was unbelievable. I cannot believe the people of this town that have showed up for me every single day. Their prayers, their good wishes, their calls to my family. I am overwhelmed by the amount of generosity and goodness that I’ve seen. It has been just completely humbling. It’s overwhelming how much people show up when this kind of devastating thing happens,” she said. When O’Connor was sent home from Beacon in May 2019, she was still left without a prosthetic and the challenge of navigating her house with a second-floor bedroom. According to O’Connor, her insurance company was lessthan sympathetic to her case. “I came home without a leg and had to go up 17 steps to my bedroom and the insurance company simply told my doctor that I should sleep in the living room, when I live with four people, three of which are men. That was hard to come home to, especially being in so much pain,” O’Connor said. It took inner strength to overcome her new challenges. “You don’t know how strong you are until you have no other choice,” she said. “Coming home was an adjustment, I thought, ‘How am I going to do this, what if I’m alone, what if I fall, what if my cat runs out of the house. can overtake you. But you have to adjust your mindset to ‘well, I’m just going to have to do it,’” she said. Getting up those stairs without a prosthetic was one of the first challenges she overcame. “I had to slide up the stairs on my butt. The first time I did it, it took 45-minutes,” she said. After receiving her prosthetic leg on July 1 and modifications to her home, such as an additional staircase railing installed by her good friend, Jimmy Balfe, things started to become a little easier. A year later, O’Connor can walk up the stairs on both legs, albeit taking a little time and patience. It is her inner strength and the strength that comes from those around her that has helped O’Connor through all of her challenges over the past year. “People say that prayers don’t do anything, but when a community is praying for

you and people are asking you how you’re doing and priests are coming to visit you, you can feel it. It’s like this wave of power that you feel, and I’ve been riding that wave all year,” O’Connor said. Since her amputation, O’Connor has also ridden literal waves. For the first time ever, O’Connor tried surfing last summer with the help of the AmpSurf program. “It was my first time and they threw me onto this longboard and threw me into the shore and I loved it. I felt like I was flying,” she said. She’s also gained physical strength through the help of others. With the help of Chris and Sarah Romulo of CROM, who offer personal training sessions to O’Connor probono, once a week, she has been able to work out. “They have been an absolute shining light in my life. Every time I leave there, I feel like I can do anything,” she said. A sense of humor that many know O’Connor for, has also made life as an amputee a little

lighter. “My friends and family and I have gotten through this with a lot of humor, because if we weren’t laughing, we’d be crying,” she said. She’s also shared examples of that sense of humor on social media. Some days, she makes light of her situation—literally. This past Halloween, O’Connor decided to dress like the famed leg lamp from A Christmas Story, donning an illuminated yellow skirt with fringe, and proudly standing on her one leg. A mini replica of that leg statue also sits in front of the television in her living room. In another chuckle-inducing post, O’Connor shared a photo of her prosthetic leg tucked into bed with the caption, “My leg fell asleep.” “I don’t want people around me to be sad for me. I don’t want people to look at me like, poor Bridget, she doesn’t have a leg, let’s treat her differently. I’m still me,” she said. Although her life has changed significantly over the past year, O’Connor is deter-

mined to keep being herself. “All of the things I thought I couldn’t do anymore—it’s only at this moment. I will regain my ability to walk without assistance. My life is going to go on as I had planned,” she said. And it’s already starting. With a passion for teaching, O’Connor was planning to go through the NYC Teaching Fellows program. A year ago, that plan was derailed. However last week, she received a letter saying that she was accepted into the program. “This year has been one of the biggest challenges of my life. Some days, I cannot believe that this is the rest of my life. I can’t believe for the rest of my life that I will never have a left leg and there are some days that it becomes so overwhelming that I can’t breathe,” she said. “But I’m alive. ‘Go to the beat.’ My father and grandfather sent me back to this life for a reason and I have to make good of it and live my life to the fullest. I’m excited for what the next year will bring.”

Centerpieces have been erected. Outfits have been designed. Glue and glitter have been applied. Babysitters have been reserved. Rockaway Times readers have been informed! This Saturday, February 8 at 7:30 p.m., The Knights of Columbus will be transformed into a ballroom fit for sea aristocrats, as we celebrate the 5th Annual Poseidon’s Prom. Naturally, the big question on everybody’s mind is, “Where is the booty?� While this year’s Super Bowl halftime show clearly confirmed that the booty is in Miami, any pirate knows that there is more to booty than twerking tushes. I’m talking, of course, about the prizes in Poseidon Prom’s amazingly eclectic raffle. A microcosm of the businesses that make up our seaside abode, the auction affords prom-goers the opportunity to stumble away from the big dance

with some even bigger prizes. I once again ventured into Poseidon’s Cave. It looked as if members of The Rockaway Mermaid Brigade had been out on a marauding spree, as donations from all sorts of Rockaway businesses were piled up in the basement art studio. Gift cards filled the table, music filled the air, and costumes and artistic centerpieces were drying out on every conceivable open space. Alex greeted me at the door, and was ready to take me on a tour of all of the prizes. As Alex began the tour, there was a sudden change in air pressure. The barometers dropped, the lights went dim and a ‘90s hip hop beat kicked in as Alex dropped some verses: “There are gift cards to Crom for a free month to get shredded, and another to Bungalow Bar where the Butlers were wedded. If it wasn’t for Whit’s End, winters would seem several months longer. I hope the pizza nazi gives some of his amazing workers a night off to celebrate prom! I, along with the entire Rockaway community, was stunned learning of his unexpected passing. I am lucky to have had him as a brother for almost 70 years. Many in the church knew Dick from kindergarten through college, his marriage of 45 years, his family, as well as his business and community involvement. Lou ended his article with, "We need more people like Dick. He was the Prince of Beach 130th Street." Dick was a great role model for all of us to strive to be Princes and Princesses. special event. The Mass was celebrated by Pastor Rev. William F. Sweeney, Msgr. John J. Bracken, and Deacon Vincent LaGamba. The event commemorated the four chaplains who lost their lives on the U.S.A.T, Dorchester, during WWII. While the whole country mourned the souls lost due to this attack by a German submarine, the parish of SFDS had an additional reason to mourn. One of their very own parishioners, Danny O’Connor, lost his life on the sinking ship. Msgr. Bracken stated in his homily, O’Connor was, “a graduate of SFDS, and made his First Holy

Out of 902 passengers, comprised of soldiers, Navy armed guards, the ship’s crew, and civilians, only 230 survived the attack. Health System Needs A Fixing

Last year, the American Journal of Medicine, aka "The Green Journal," ran a series of articles about the problems inherent in the American healthcare system. They were written by Dr. Edward Hoffer from Mass General Hospital in Boston. I would like to share with you some information from his article about the U.S. Pharmaceutical Industry. While spending on medication makes up only about 14% of total U.S. health care spending, it is rising rapidly and represents one of the most egregious failures of the “free market system” to be reasonable and fair. There is no doubt that the pharmaceutical and medical device industries have vastly improved health care over the last 50 years. For example, consider the fact that FDR died in 1945 of a cerebral hemorrhage because there was no effective treatment for high blood pressure.

We have come a long way since then, but at what cost and what value? In 2017, U.S. pharmaceutical expenditures were $1443 per capita. Compare that to $667 per capita in Germany and $566 in Sweden. Implanted devices like prosthetic joints and pacemakers cost more than six times as much here as they do in other countries. The cost of insulin doubled between 2012 and 2016. While this reflects, in part anyway, a shift from older human insulins to newer analog insulins, the cost of the older insulins has increased dramatically. It is estimated that 25% of diabetics underuse insulin because of its high cost. Ironically, insulin was discovered in 1921 by Canadian doctors, Frederick Banting and Charles Best, who sold the patent to the University of Toronto for $1 because they believed that this life-saving drug should be available and affordable for all diabetics who needed it. They would be spinning in their graves if they knew

how their idealism has been corrupted by the pharmaceutical industry. While price gouging is common in the pharmaceutical industry, one of the worst cases was the behavior of Turing Pharmaceuticals under the leadership of Martin Shkreli. In 2015, Turing bought the patent for Daraprim, knowing it was not widely used but was essential in the treatment of toxoplasmosis, a parasitic infection. They boosted the price from $13.50 a pill to $750 a pill, a 5500% increase. Despite being called to testify before Congress, Shkreli did not reduce the price. In 2017, Nostrum Laboratories raised the price of nitrofurantoin, used to treat urinary infections, from $475 to $2392. Nostrum’s CEO defended the increase, and defended the actions of Turing, by stating that, in a capitalist system, there was a “moral requirement to sell products at the highest possible price.” Drug companies try to justify their high prices by claiming that

they need to cover the high costs of research and development (R & D), but the reality is that they spend far more on advertising and marketing. When a truly innovative medication is released, many companies develop “me too” medications that tweak the original product. Then they market their product as even better than the original. This requires minimal spending on R & D, but huge spending on marketing. One can see this “me too” phenomenon in drugs like ACE inhibitors (lisinopril), ARBs (losartan), and the newer diabetic medications like Ozempic. New cancer drugs come to the market with price tags over $100,000. As newer gene therapy drugs become available, their price tags are likely to be in the millions. Rather than endlessly dwelling on ways to get rid of a duly elected president they don’t like, Congress needs to shift its focus to fix our broken healthcare system. The Mind Is The Builder By Kathy Pastina

This past month at the studio, the focus was on removing the obstacles on our path through intention and focus. Belief is biology and when we practice mindfulness through our intention, we are able to give ourselves permission to lay down our burdens and make space for connecting with our true divine selves. Edgar Cayce wrote in his book, A Search for God, “The mind is the builder,” so whatever it is, the mind gets hooked on, be it anger, fear, revenge, resentment, that is exactly what our future holds. Rumi wrote, “The universe conspires on your behalf” and that works both ways. Stay in a cycle of fear and hatred and that is what our future holds. Set your intention on love, calm, clarity and

courage and we will find more of it in our lives. We create our future from this precise moment. The future is built into this sacred moment. Setting this lofty intention of love and compassion can be a difficult challenge because our brains for the most part are hardwired for negativity or that fight and flight mode. In the yoga sutras, they describe a path to peace in an effort to bring serenity of mind and to more effectively respond to our world more skillfully. Asana, or the actual physical practice of yoga, calms the mind for meditation where we can reflect on the manifestations we create and how to soften around our ever-aggressive minds and bring forth that seed of love and compassion. Practicing mindfulness and prayer around these aspects helps us walk through our daily journey cultivating a more peaceful and radiant environment for ourselves and others instead of focusing on the neg-

ative egoic whims and fancies of the mind and being swept away in confusion and fear. When we can cultivate clarity and warmth, we will vibrate that out to those around us creating a saner, kinder world. Seems naïve and simplistic but any small or great endeavor starts with one step. One practice from the yoga sutras is called the four locks and keys. The first lock is when you encounter a happy person to treat them with the friendliness key, an unhappy person with the compassion key, virtuous use the delight key and a wicked person use the disregard key or equanimity. This last one does not mean by any means we ignore evil or morally corrupt situations in our community or country but that by trying to practice calm we cultivate a heightened clarity that removes the dross from our minds and gives us the courage to step forward with duty and action that benefits the greater good.

A tall order it is but as we slowly walk forward (and they can be baby steps) towards removing the obstacles that stunt our inner goodness, we grow and so does everything around us. It gives hope and light. We saw this with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi and Thich Nhat Hanh. All peaceful warriors who effected great change for the good of many. We can all effect some change in the world. We see this kind spirit in our beautiful Rockaway community. Our own Rockaway native and esteemed yoga teacher, Sarah Arikian, is doing amazing work in Africa, where together with her friend, she helped create a library in the rural village of Accra, Ghana, where children and families now have free access to books and knowledge. Amazing work Sarah and Suzy! Mother Teresa said, “Not all of us can do great things but we can do small things with great love.” May you be happy and peaceful. Namaste

Travels with Bob and Sandy HOG HEAVEN ON TWO WHEELS

Nothing has ever compared to America’s love of traveling on two wheels from the days of the bicycle with the huge front wheel to the roar of a big-engine motorcycle racing over country roads and reveling on the twists and turns of a hair-raising mountain trail. And nothing evokes those mental pictures more than the iconic all-American HOG, the Harley Davidson. Picture Peter Fonda racing through small towns; or Marlon Brando with his motorcycle gang in the Wild Ones. Harley Riders refer to their motorcycles as “HOGS� and they even have a Harley Owners Group (HOGS). In summer, the roar of motorcycle engines can be heard coming down Cross Bay Boulevard and over the bridges onto the Rockaway peninsula. Many will head up to the 116th Street area where they can dismount,

enjoy the beach and then quaff a few adult beverages in nearby taverns. Many others opt for long distance ride with clubs. All that being said, more than 99 percent of motorcycle riders today are doctors, lawyers, engineers and a slew of blue-collar workers. And by far the majority

of the “Riders� plant their leather chaps on the seat of a Harley. For sure there are many other brands on the road. There’s the German BMW, the Japanese Honda and even the Chinese have gotten into the act with a bike that really doesn’t match up to the others. All of these Asian-made

machines are often referred to as “Rice Burners.� (Disclaimer: Bob rides, but his motorcycle is a Japanese Honda Trike). Some organizations such as the Nam Knights Motorcycle Club require that prospective members must ride American-made machines and that usually translates to a Harley. Detroit is often thought of as “Motor City,� but to HOG owners the true center of motorized travel, especially on two wheels, is Milwaukee, home of the plant manufacturing the Harley. On February 15 and 16, the bikers are invited to the Milwaukee Art Museum for the exhibit, Portrait of Milwaukee, and for the Harley Museum’s “Building a Milwaukee Icon-the Harley Juneau Avenue Factory." The Harley Museum recently obtained a cache of ancient drawings that include plans for the original Juneau Avenue facility. Along with those archival pencil drawings are old photographs that show the early days of the brand. In 1909 they produced about 1,000 motorcycles a year and by 1920 they were pushing out 27,000. America truly entered the “Motorcycle Age” during and after World War II when the twowheeled vehicle was used extensively by scouts and couriers who needed to maneuver quickly over narrow roads to avoid enemy

Post-war, when the troops returned home many wanted to continue the feel of wind in their faces and motorcycling morphed into a major business. Other companies sprang up producing bikes for the consumer, but over the years they began to fall by the wayside, one after the other, with pretty much only Harley standing the test of time. Come early spring, long lines of motorcyclists can be seen on vir-

tually every road, highway, byway and even off-road. The business has become a major market with clubs all needing their own emblems and other gear. In New York, one of the more esoteric groups is the Special Forces Motorcycle Club consisting primarily of former Army Green Berets. Members range from Nassau County into Queens, Connecticut and New Jersey (Bob loves mentioning this as he is one of the members). At a recent reunion of Far Rockaway High School alumni on the boardwalk, motorcycles

could be seen parked along the path leading up to the festivities. For those on the long haul, a walk through the Harley-Davidson Museum is a trek through ancient memories. The 20-acre park-like campus, one of Milwaukee's top tourist destinations, offers a full calendar of activities for visitors. License plates on the bikes cover the spectrum of the United States and Canada with the odd plate coming from south of the border and even Europe. Wind blowing through rider’s hair is a thing of the past in most areas now as safety laws require approved helmets. Some grouse about not being free but others accept the laws and have come to grips with avoiding traumatic brain injury. For anyone considering buying a motorcycle, the best bet is to look up a training program, often provided by local police or motorcycle agencies. It’s best to learn before you burn. Some states permit those schools to authorize a motorcycle endorsement on your driver’s license. So get out and enjoy the camaraderie...but be safe.

Local Girl is ‘Owl-In!’ By Marina Cregan

For such a small and active peninsula, sports have proven to be one of the most eventful community activities for Rockaway locals, especially when it comes to basketball. Whether it be CYO basketball, intramurals, or the Summer Classics, basketball has become a huge part of many local children’s lives. However, while many students call it quits on their basketball careers after high school, Rockaway native, Grace Collins, has taken it further. She’s dribbled her basketball talents down to South Florida, where she plays Division 1 basketball for Florida Atlantic University (FAU). Collins discovered her love for the sport, when she began playing for St. Rose of Lima in elementary school. Once her talents were brought to light

by fellow St. Rose basketball coaches, she was invited to play on the boys’ team for the school. When it came time to pursue her basketball skills on a high school level,

Collins attended The Mary Louis Academy (TMLA). It was during these four years of playing high school ball, that Collins’ love and dedication to the sport developed. Throughout her four years as a TMLA Hilltopper, Collins received numerous awards for the girls’ basketball team. She received The Scholar Athlete award consecutively for four years and was named MVP for three years. Collins was also named to the CHSAA AA All-League Team, as well as being on the Brooklyn/Queens First Team for Catholic High Schools as named by The Tablet. Although her basketball skills were notable in itself, Collins also understood the importance of sportsmanship, and was awarded the CHSAA John Pinero Sportsmanship Award. Finally, before pursuing her basketball career at FAU, Collins finished her high school basketball years

When deciding on committing to play for the FAU Owls, Collins says, “I chose FAU because it gave me a fresh start to begin my journey of selfgrowth and discovery. With 29 games scheduled for the 2019-2020 regular season, Head Coach Jim Jabir has certainly kept Collins and her teammates busy. Because the team is D1, FAU plays schools across the country, where Collins was able to showcase her talents in other states like Iowa, Michigan, and Kentucky. And while most college students look forward to returning back to the peninsula for their winter breaks, Collins remained at FAU for Thanksgiving, in order to keep practicing. Although participating in a D1 college-level sport, Collins still manages to keep up with her studies, as she’s pursuing a degree in Elementary Education. In her first semester at FAU, Collins was named to the President's Honor List, with a 4.0 G.P.A. Being born and raised in Rockaway, Collins never forgets her roots, keeping, “Rockaway sand in her shoes,” says her mother, Lynda McCarthy Collins. Every time she steps on the court, she brings pride to her mother, family, and the Rockaway community. Wearing #13 proudly on her FAU Owls jersey, Collins stands as an in-

spiration for local girls wishing to pursue careers in the sports they love. Collins has taken her basketball talents, which developed on our very own peninsula, and represents Rockaway as many locals support her while on her basketball journey. According to Facebook, Rockaway locals are often packing the FAU stands. Some notable Rockaway natives who have visited Boca Raton to support Collins and the Owls, have been Ellen Rayder Collins and Claire Collins-Kavanaugh. (As a member of the FAU alumni myself, I couldn’t be prouder to see a fellow Rockawayite represent, not only our community, but the Owls, so well.) The Diamond In Your Life With Valentine’s Day soon approaching, I started to get depressed. Great, another commercialized holiday, when every shop seems to be busting at the seams with chocolate boxes, teddy bears, and those saccharine cards and balloons that I literally want to shred. And let’s not talk about those equally sticky sweet Zale jewelry commercials. Don’t laugh, I’m a lover, not a hater, but admittedly I wish I could be like the groundhog poking its head out, and then retreating back to its burrow muttering, “Nah, I’m just going to snooze. Nuttin’ out here.” Well spring enthusiasts, this past Sunday, Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow, meaning spring is on the way. However, as I watched the news depicting the furry oracle aristocratically being held in the year pronouncing a short winter, I said to myself, “Phil—you’re on to something.” Forget snoozing through Valentine’s Day, I have a sweet date. The diamond of my life is going to be my Valentine’s—none other than my 11-year-old daughter with autism. My daughter emotes affection in some curious ways. At night, as we’re cuddling in bed, she’ll just throw her arm around my neck as if executing a choke hold. (Yes, she’s that strong!) Then the other day, she just looked at me, giggled and gave me a peck on the lips. I am usually the

grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends may not understand a child‘s aloofness, but can learn to appreciate and respect his/her capacity for connection with others.” As American author and socialite, Zelda Fitzgerald, also daughter of famed novelist, F. Even on the most difficult days when I want to rip my hair out after feeling that I need a team of oxen on call to drag my daughter off the school bus, I would just look at her giggly smile and luminous eyes filled with cheek, but oozing love, I melt. Nancy Re, writing teacher at SFDS and wanted to share students’ writing with The Rockaway Times. The students in Grades 6 and 7 were competing to get their work published in The Tablet. Students were required to write about local people and organizations that exemplified the theme of SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP.

Belle Harbor Heroes By Catherine Smith, Grade 6

Dylan Smith was a hero in SuperStorm Sandy, along with his friend from the block, Michael McDonnell. Smith and McDonnell helped six of their neighbors get out of the raging water in the streets and the homes engulfed in flames on Beach 130th Street in Belle Harbor, just one block from St. Francis de Sales Church and School. They both did that with only ropes, long electrical cords, and their surfboards to paddle around to get people out of harm's way and safety. Smith was described as the kid with the surfboard who arrived like an angel. A quote from Smith was, "I don't think I'm a hero. Absolutely not. I just did what I was trained to. I'm am a lifeguard. I surf. This is what I do." Smith died due to a surfing accident in Puerto Rico just two months after the storm on December 23, 2012. Smith was 23. It is almost unbelievable that he died while surfing, the same way he saved so many people the night of the storm. Smith’s life ended way too early, however his legacy will live on forever. He has been honored in many ways since Sandy. The street on which he grew up on was renamed “Dylan Smith Way.” The family had the choice between “Dylan Smith Street” and “Dylan Smith Way.” His mother, Mary Smith, joked that it needed to be Dylan Smith Way, because Dylan was stubborn like his father and always had to get his

way. Smith was also honored in a documentary by John Sica called “Seven Miles to Shore.” The movie was about what happened in Rockaway during the night of Sandy. Through interviews with different people, this documentary allows you to understand how truly heroic Dylan Smith was. ”Seven Miles to Shore” can be viewed on Brian Sica’s YouTube channel. Every summer in June, Smith’s family, friends, and the surfing community of Rockaway Beach hold an annual Memorial Paddle Out to pay their respects and honor those who left this earth way too soon. Dozens bring their surfboards and paddle out on the water while carrying roses and meet to form a circle to remember Dylan Smith. This event is a celebration of his life and spirit. People Magazine also honored Smith by naming him on its list of “2012 Heroes of the Year.” All the winners of this award shared two common traits—selflessness and compassion. I was only four at the time of Superstorm Sandy. I don't remember much about the storm and the devastation it caused my neighborhood. Smith was not only a hero to the Rockaway community, but a hero to my family. I am proud to say Dylan Smith is also my cousin. Since Catholic Schools Week’s theme is Service and Leadership, I immediately thought of Dylan Smith. He exemplified this theme.

Rockaway WISH Honors Diane Erhard for Service By Megan Youngberg, Grade 7

When I hear the words, "service" and "leadership," I immediately think of my Grandma. Her name is Mrs. Diane Erhard, and I am not the only one who feels this way. In November, she was honored for

her service and leadership by the Rockaway WISH organization. This organization is devoted to Women In Service and Help and is a volunteer group that serves the Rockaway peninsula. WISH selected my Grandma because of her humility and service. Diane Erhard grew up as one of four kids in Brooklyn. She goes to church daily and prays to God in church, in her room, and even at family parties. I remember at one party, she had all 25 of her grandkids, saying, “We should know God, love God, and live as He taught us!” My Grandma lives in a basement apartment in my house, so I’m always able to see her in action. She constantly demonstrates her belief that the best way to live your life is to live it with Christ. Although she just turned 80, my Grandma participates in many service activities and is a leader in my family and in the Rockaways. My Grandma serves the community by reaching out to nursing homes and people in need. She brings communion to the local nursing home. She always goes out of her way by bringing cupcakes or some other sweet treat to the residents. She makes them so happy! She feeds their hearts with Christ and their tummies! “Service is necessary for the community because in this world which isn’t perfect, there is always a need,” says my Grandma. She serves the parish by being a Eucharistic minister. She also belongs to many parish groups and she attends the Right to Life March every year. My Grandma says, “I see Christ in all of the world and in all people.” She serves our parish actively in the St. Vincent de Paul Society and in the Bereavement Group, as well. My Grandma is a leader in my family and in our parish. She is a leader in my family because she has six children

and as I mentioned 25 grandchildren. She is our role model. At every family party, she says prayers out loud in front of us telling God how lucky and blessed she is having all of us as her family. Meanwhile, we are really blessed to have her! My Grandma is a leader in our parish because she always goes to Mass. She is nice to everyone and truly listens to whatever they have say, including listening to their troubles or their successes. My Grandma defines a leader as “someone who understands what the situation is, who is involved, and what needs to be done.” This statement sums up what a leader is. “I think everyone should try to do their best, whether it is to be the leader or be the helper. But always lead when it is a choice between good or evil,” says my Grandma. My Grandmother was a Catholic School teacher and teacher’s assistant for many years. She also served as a volunteer Reading Mom at SFDS in the 1970s by pulling out struggling students to assist them. Education was a priority for her as she was attending school at night while raising her own children and instilling the value of a Catholic education in each and every one of them. In conclusion, my Grandma is the person who I immediately think of when the words service and leadership are spoken. She is a great example everywhere at any time. She will never let you down, like a good leader would do, and she will help anyone who needs it, just like a person with a great heart would do. If you met my Grandma your life would definitely change. She is such a positive, caring person when all we hear about nowadays is sadness and fighting. I love her with all my heart, and I wish the whole world could see what a great person she is. Leadership…. service...my Grandma.

How do you do it? How do you do all your live videos? You just talk to the people so easily. I feel like I'm always hiding, I saw your #videovixenchallenge, and I was shocked how many women did it. And I so badly wanted to say, "oh they all look like you," but they didn't. The women were all different ages, sizes, shapes, colors and everyone showed up. I kept thinking what if I just did it, and jumped on live, but I feel like I have nothing to say, and like all my people that I haven't seen for 20 years or so, would come on and make fun of me. I'm mostly asking for confidence tips, how do I come out of hiding, maybe on a FB live, but really in my life. I feel like the live is just how I am everywhere. I hide from friends, I hide from family, and from dating, forget about it. I hear myself lying and saying saying, "I have boyfriend!" What am I, fifteen?! HELP! Where do I begin being confident! Dear Hiding Henrietta, Your voice is one that I'm sure a lot of people can relate to. Here is a big secret: I'm way more comfortable talking to people from my home computer than I am in a social setting. There is a real thing of being an introvert, and I mostly am! I like being really choosy about where I go, and whom I spend time with, because that

kind of discernment is necessary and I don't feel bad about it. If I go somewhere out of obligation, I usually end up feeling bad physically or get resentful. So, a big piece for you that I really want you to hear (or read) is to be nice to yourself, and be understanding and accepting, that having a lot of people around isn't for you. Once you accept that, you can always change your mind! The next thing is, it's important to find your tribe. You're kind of special, awkward people where you can work on your relaxation. It's absolutely heaven on earth to be able to bring your flavor of personality to a group where it's ok to be your weird self. The other big thing I advise is for you to stay curious. Curious like a three-year-old learning about the world. When you go somewhere, get curious about what that environment is like. When you hear yourself lying to someone about your relationship status, get curious about what you are protecting yourself from. I want you to begin to trust yourself, and trust that if you want to stay home you can, and if you choose to go out you can. The trust muscle within yourself is one to work on as you would any muscle. Focus and stay curious and you shall be successful!! COMMUNITY BOARD APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED Want an opportunity to serve on Community Board 14? There’s still time. The deadline to apply has been extended to March 13. On Tuesday, February 4, Acting Borough President Sharon Lee announced an extension to the application deadline for qualified and civic-minded individuals interested in serving on one of the borough’s 14 Community Boards, which play an important advisory role in considering land use and zoning matters in their respective districts. Interested applicants will now have until Friday, March 13, 2020 to submit completed, signed and notarized applications to the Borough President’s office — a sixweek extension from the original January 31 deadline. “The extension is to ensure that the pool of applicants is as robust as possible,” Borough President Lee said. The Community Board membership application is available online at www.queensbp.org/ community-boards.

There are 59 Community Boards citywide, including 14 in Queens, and each hold monthly full membership meetings. The Boards also hold hearings and issue recommendations about the City budget, municipal service delivery and numerous other matters that impact their communities. All Queens Community Board members are appointed by the Queens Borough President, pursuant to the City Charter, with half of the appointments nominated by the City Councilmembers representing their respective Community Districts. Each Board has up to 50 unsalaried members, with each member serving a twoyear term. All Community Board members who wish to continue serving on a Board are required to re-apply at the conclusion of their two-year term and are subject to review and reconsideration. For the upcoming round of appointments, the two-year term of service will begin on April 1, 2020.

Annoying Stuff in Sports

From The Mike We’re happy to introduce Jim Sweeney—the MIKE Maker and Creator of MIKE—the ultimate talking head on sports! MIKE just might become an animated brand everyone will know. The sports world needs one! Born and raised in Trenton, New Jersey, Jim grew up with a passion for sports and fun. Participating in baseball, basketball, swimming, soccer and street hockey as a kid, Jim wound up playing basketball at Boston College where he captained the Eagles from 1977 – 1980 and received the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award as the nation’s top NCAA basketball under six feet tall. sports comic books under the MIKE name. Now in his sixties and living in Florida, Jim continues to play basketball regularly and always finds time for fun. He also serves as the Head of USA for FIMBA – Federation of International Masters Basketball Association. Sports fans not only like to boast about what they admire about an athlete, a team or a game. They also love to pontificate about the sports related stuff that irritates them. As a prolific sports commentator, I consider it my personal obligation to speak up about the personalities, situations,

ill-advised behavior, etc., in sports that stoke my embers of distaste. One of the worst sights in all of sports is the ridiculous spectacle known as the “missed free throw celebration.” It deserves my top spot in Annoying Stuff in Sports. Incredulously, we witness this “poor shooting party” whenever we watch an NBA, NCAA, high school or biddy league basketball game. These “failed free throw festivities” occur whenever basketball players enthusiastically approach their brick-laying, free throw shooting teammate. They oddly congratulate him with high fives and pats to the butt after he just clanged an important freebie from 15 feet? Doesn’t anybody else on the planet find this behavior ridiculous? Why don’t ESPN announcers decry the dreadful display of celebrating ineptitude

whenever a shooter misses a gimme from the charity stripe? Instead, they claim there’s a mysterious lid on the basket. Imagine if MLB infielders sprint to the pitcher’s mound to bask in the embarrassment of a pitcher immediately after his last fast ball wound up 450’ away in the centerfield stands? And, what if NFL players party-hearty with their team’s running back after he coughs up the football in the red zone? You get where I’m going here. So, let’s stop the “missed free throw celebrations” before these pitiful parties spread to other sports. ***Want to get in touch with Mike?
