A Good Deed Restores Faith By Katie McFadden
Faith in humanity, restored. On Tuesday, February 5, Margaret O’Connor Gallagher and her husband, Donald Gallagher, were taking advantage of the warm weather by going for a stroll on the boardwalk. However, Margaret later realized that at some point, she had dropped her wallet. Luckily for her, it fell into the right hands. Margaret’s husband, Donald Gallagher, posted to the Friends of Rockaway Beach Facebook group, asking for people to keep a lookout for the wallet somewhere along the boardwalk. Later in the morning, Margaret and her husband were going to sit on the boardwalk near their home when a young woman approached with a wallet that looked like Margaret’s. “We saw her walking towards us with it on her wrist. Margaret saw the girl and said to me, ‘Mine looked just like hers,’ and I said, ‘You sure
Margaret Gallagher with Jasmine.
it’s not yours?’ and she said, ‘No,’ but then realized it was,” Donald Gallagher said. The young woman named Jasmine was also enjoying a stroll on the boardwalk that morning when she came across the wallet on a boardwalk
bench on Beach 38th Street. She looked at Margaret’s driver’s license and noticed that her July birthday was just one day before Margaret’s, so using the address on the license, Jasmine walked all the way from Beach 38th Street to 7600
Shore Front Parkway to deliver the wallet to her fellow Cancer sign friend. She seemingly recognized Margaret from her license photo. “I think that Jasmine knew it was Margaret’s, as she was staring at us,” Gallagher said. Jasmine returned the Michael Kohrs wallet complete with all of its contents. “She was such a pleasant person. She was so happy to get the wallet back to Margaret,” Gallagher said. Gallagher gave her a reward for her good deed before asking for a photo, which he later posted to the Friends of Rockaway Beach Facebook group to share an update saying the wallet had been returned. “She was really an amazing young lady, so I think she should be recognized for her good deed,” Gallagher said. The updated post garnered plenty of attention and was met by many “Likes” and comments by fellow residents showing their appreciation for the good deed.

Oh Snap! The Rockaway Times Photo Contest Is Open! Hit us with your best shots (again)! The Fourth Annual Rockaway Times Photo Contest is now underway. There’s no doubt, we have some talented area photographers. But the contest reveals the best of the best and you don’t have to be a professional to win the top prize of $500. Last year’s winner, Don Riepe, snapped a gorgeous shot of a pair of swans at sunset in Jamaica Bay near Broad Channel. It was chosen as the number one photo out of more than a thousand entries last year. Along with the crown and bragging rights, Riepe received $500 and his photo made the front cover of The Rockaway Times last summer. Riepe’s photo was among a top 30 that were blown up to poster-sized masterpieces and displayed on the boardwalk from Beach 19th through Riis Park, in Broad Channel and near the ferry landing, making for an outdoor photography museum that all could enjoy.
By Ann Kirby-Payne 2018
The contest has been such a success that it’s only right that we keep it going and aiming for bigger and better and once again, local activist John Cori will be the mastermind behind it all. Plus, co-sponsors like the NYC Parks Department, the Jamaica Bay – Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC), NYCFerry, and the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA) will also be helping to make the contest another big hit.
This year, we’re starting the contest a week early to give people more time to gather their best shots. We just ask that everyone follows the rules! There are five categories, but they’re a bit different from last year, so pay close attention! 1) Parade Pics (This means local parades like Poseidon’s, Rockaway St. Paddy’s Day and even your Memorial Day parade pics); 2) Humor/ Fun (Got a silly shot from around town that

PSEG tells us that they’ll be out inspecting wooden poles for the next few weeks. Maybe it’s the Rockaway wind, but we know there are plenty of leaning towers throughout the peninsula. And here’s some utility pole trivia: PSEG maintains 350,000 such poles. ***** Capital One Bank on Beach 116th Street is closing, as is the one on Mott Avenue in Far Rockaway. Capital One has been turning some of their banks into banks with cafes in an effort to win over millennials. No such attempt will be made in Rockaway (maybe there are enough good coffee options here?). The property on Beach 116th Street has been a bank for decades (Greenpoint, Home Savings, and the list goes on). City records show Greenpoint Savings as the cur-
rent owner, but that’s been gone since 2007. ***** Speaking of Beach 116th Street. On the beach block, Paper Panda has closed. Blue Bungalow has closed its store and moved online. And now Capital One. Plus Dunkin Donuts and Paninico on the next block. The condo is rising fast on that street, but the future suddenly seems murky for retail. ***** Just around the corner, the new apartments and four commercial units, on Rockaway Beach Boulevard, (where all the buildings burned down during Sandy), has started renting apartments. Owner Dino Tomassetti Jr. says some finishing touches such as landscaping still need to get done and he expects the 27-unit project to be fully leased by the end of the summer. ***** Maybe attendance would soar. We don’t think it could hurt. Why not make one Community Board meeting a party? Cut the regular business short
Page 7
and break out some drinks, have some music, allow members to socialize and the public to meet members in an environment that’s a little more…. well, social. ***** Whew, there’s a lot going on this Saturday night. Bugalou Music will showcase Blac Rabbit and Gerald Bair; the popular Poseidon Prom is at the Knights and a comedy show is at the Rockaway Beach Golf Club. And not to mention, our local establishments offering great winter specials. Who says Rockaway is dead in the winter. Not this weekend! ***** The Super Bowl was played last Sunday. Plenty of beer, pizza, and chips were bought, but Mazzone’s Hardware reports that the big seller on the day of the big game was toilet seats. We’ll let you make your own joke here. ***** Facebook is now 15 years old. Way back then, you had to have a college email address to join. Most of you know that it was
started at Harvard by then-college student Mark Zuckerberg. ***** Our condolences go out to the friends and family of Msgr. Vincent Keane, who passed away on February 5. He was ordained in 1958 and served as the pastor of St. Francis de Sales from 1980-1988. ***** The Photo Contest categories are: Local Parades (Poseidon and Rockaway St. Pat’s); Humor/ Fun; Rainbows/Lightning; Pets/ Animals; and Beach Life (or that great Rockaway photo that you're not sure what category it fits, but it should be on display or in the running for top prize). Please, pretty please, follow the rules. (Limit number of photos, send to correct email, etc). See page 5 and 6 for the details.

Lawmakers Pass Legislation to Curb Whale Food Fishing
By Katie McFadden
OPEN YEAR ROUND
The local whales will have plenty to celebrate this year. They’ll likely have more to eat. This week, state lawmakers passed legislation that would prevent fishermen from using a technique to mass fish menhaden, or bunker, a popular bait fish and source of fish oil, and also a favorite meal of local ocean wildlife like humpback whales that have frequented our waters in recent years. The Menhaden population has increased in New York waters in recent years, which is evident by the number of whales that now frequent the area to feast on them. However, the increase has also drawn the attention of fishing companies. As Omega Protein, the largest menhaden fishing corporation in the coun-

try, lowered their purse seine nets into the waters off of New York and New Jersey last summer, pulling in as much as two million pounds of menhaden in a single day, concern grew. Menhaden, also known as bunker, is often used as a bait fish to attract larger prey, and with a high oil content, it is ground into products like fish-oil capsules. However, the fish is also a favorite food of larger sea wildlife such as whales, sharks, dolphin, tuna, blue fish and other large fish species, and has been credited for bringing more of such wildlife to the area, much to the joy of local whale watching boats and beachgoers. Although the practice of harvesting menhaden is legal, fear started to grow
that engaging in the practice so close to shore, would impact local wildlife. Last year, Omega Protein began the process of seeking a Sustainability Certificate from the Marine Stewardship Council,
The law would prevent purse seine fishing in the pink area
which would verify that the company’s mass harvesting of menhaden of the Atlantic menhaden fishery was a sustainable practice. As environmentalists monitored Omega’s fishing practices of using a purse seine net to obtain massive quantities of menhaden, pushback began. Groups like Gotham Whale, which studies the local New York whale population, and a new group, Menhaden Defenders, banded together with others to protest the practice due to the potential impact it could have on the local population of whales and other wildlife and the ecosystem of local waters. That pushback has seemingly led to progress. Other bills putting limits on menhaden fishing have failed to pass in the past, but this week, both the NY Senate and Assembly unanimously agreed that the time has come to curb menhaden fishing in local waters. They both passed a bill that prevents menhaden being taken from New York’s marine district with a purse seine, unless the Department of Environmental Conservation determines there is an imminent risk of a fish kill. The bill still needs to be approved by Governor Andrew Cuomo, but with unanimous approval by the Senate and Assembly, he is expected to sign it into law. This means whales should have plenty to eat right off our shores.

Capital One Banks to Close Permanently By Katie McFadden
Capital One Bank is closing on the peninsula. Last week, customers started receiving letters advising them that the Rockaway Park and Far Rockaway branches of the bank will be closing in May, leaving customers wondering what steps they should take. Letters for local customers started to roll in last week, saying that the Rockaway Park branch at 116-01 Rockaway Beach Blvd. will officially close at the end of the day on May 8 and the Far Rockaway branch at 20-10 Mott Ave will officially close at the end of the day on May 9. The news may have come as a surprise to some, but the closures are following a recent trend for Capital One banks, which cut 32 percent of its branches nationwide just between 2012 and 2017. Last year, that trend continued. In June 2018, the bank announced that it would be closing 16 of its branches in Long Island and
six of its Queens branches in September 2018. Now both of Rockaway’s branches are on the chopping block for 2019. When questioned about the decision to close the local branches, a Capital One spokesperson kept it vague. “Our Bank leaders recognize the effect closing these two
branches will have on our customers and do not take it lightly. As Capital One continues to evolve and optimize our branch network in response to changing customer banking preferences and to ensure we’re operating as efficiently and effectively as possible, decisions are made to open,

renovate, and in some instances, close or relocate branches. We regularly review our entire branch network,” Capital One spokesperson Amanda Landers said. The Rockaway Times went to the Rockaway Park branch to find out more, but even the staff admitted that they didn’t know much. A teller explained that they weren’t told why the banks are closing. The only good thing for the employees is that they will be able to keep their jobs, but will be moved to other branches. Landers also confirmed this, saying, “As part of this consolidation, we were able to ensure all of our associates could maintain their positions and move to other branches.” Some local customers believe the closures are being done so Capital One can transition more into an online banking service. In her response, one of the options Landers suggested was for customers to become Continued on page 11

more familiar with the online and mobile banking tools. “We encourage our customers to give us a call or stop by their branch to ask us any questions before it closes, so that we could show them the available options to bank at any time with Capital One with tools such as online/mobile banking and bill pay,” she said. What other options may customers have? Travel. Some customers have already said they’ll be looking for other area banks to do their business with. However, Capital One maintains that accounts won’t be impacted by the closures and customers can continue to visit other branches. “There will be no changes to our customers’ accounts or their account numbers. As always, customers can visit any Capital One branch and receive the same level of account access and high-quality service they’ve come to ex-

If customers want to continue utilizing Capital One branches, there are some options including branches in Cedarhurst, Howard Beach and inside Kings Plaza in Brooklyn. There are also local ATMs that allow Capital One customers to take out cash without being hit with fees. Visit CapitalOne.com and enter your zip code to find your nearest ATM. As for what will come of the local branches after they close? That’s still up in the air. As of press time, Landers did not provide an answer and tellers at the Rockaway Park location said they did not know what would happen with the building. Some Capital One locations that have closed have been turned into banking cafes, where customers can still do limited banking while enjoying coffee and other treats, however there was no word on if this will take place at either of the Rockaway branches. The closure of the Rockaway

Park branch would be another hit for Beach 116th, which has already seen a number of businesses close over the past year including Paper Panda, Paninico, Blue Bungalow and Dunkin Donuts. The bank closure could also be the end of history for the Rockaway Park branch. The building has been a bank since it was built in the 1970s. The building has undergone some name brand changes over the years, but has always been a bank, from Century Federal Savings in the ‘70s to Home Savings of America in the 80s and early 90s, to Green Point Bank and North Fork Bank in the 2000s, to the Capital One that it is now since about 2008. The bank became a big draw for people as one of the only local banks that offered drive-through service. However, with these closures, it seems that customers will soon be driving elsewhere. For more information on the closures and possible options, head to your nearest Capital One branch before May, or visit CapitalOne.com or call 1-800655-2265.

Animal Angels Dear Editor: When someone does something kind, it's important to acknowledge it. When my dog, Jack, had to be put down last Monday, I called the Animal Hospital of the Rockaways. When Samantha and Dr. Seeder from the staff arrived, they could not have been more compassionate. They gave us time with Jack before he transitioned to the "Rainbow Bridge," as well as great hugs. Our sincere thanks to all of them. Kate & Walter Patterson
Dear Editor: I just want to dedicate the article that the lovely Katie McFadden, editor of The Rockaway Times, wrote recently, to my father, Philip J. Ferrando, who shared the same room in the Promenade Nursing Home and died December 10, 2018. He was born on April 10, 1934. Thank you for writing a wonderful article on my mom, Barbara Ferrando, also residing at the Promenade Nursing Home. My mom has made some lovely new friends including Sharon Turso, August Poole, Karolina and Scott, Mr. Garvey and maybe others who have visited that I don’t know about, and a big Thank You to you as well. The Promenade is requesting the list of names of those who may want to visit once or more. If you would like to visit, you can contact me (Tim Bishop) on Facebook, and I will call the facility to add your name. P.S. The names above are already listed at the facility. God Bless All of You. Big Turnout For Sanders’ Pot Talk What would Queens look like if recreational marijuana was legal? On Saturday, February 2, Senator James Sanders, Jr. held a debate on the subject that had a big turnout from folks around the borough. The event, held at the Black Spectrum Theater in Jamaica, featured panelists representing different perspectives on the social, economic, legal, and political pros and cons of marijuana legalization. The 200 community members who attended the event had an opportunity to voice their views and opinions on the subject. On the pro-side – participants said legalization would cause less arrests and interaction with law enforcement; increase potential opportunities for community growth and economic investment, and put in place regulations that would decrease black market sales. On the con side – arguments were made that the drug could damage people’s health and cause car accidents and other
fatalities; taxes collected from legal weed would not be reinvested into local communities, that a few top companies would monopolize dispensaries, as is the case in New York currently with medical marijuana. Also if marijuana is commercialized, it would increase the desire for people to want to smoke it, opponents said. All of the panelists, however, as well as Senator Sanders agreed that marijuana should be decriminalized. Senator Sanders does not support the legalization of marijuana, because he said he is wary anytime the government becomes a “pusher” and has concerns about the “legalize it now, figure it out later” mentality. The debate’s winner, as chosen by the audience, was a tie, with everyone agreeing that each side presented a compelling argument with many valid points. Senator Sanders plans to continue the conversation about marijuana legalization by hosting similar events around the district starting next month.

Cheese Wheel Pasta Rolls Into Riis By Katie McFadden
Something wheely magnifico is taking place at Riis Park. A viral foodie sensation is taking place right in town—Cheese Wheel Pasta. Imagine a full parmesan cheese wheel carved out to make a bowl shape. Then the inside of the bowl is inflamed with brandy to soften the cheese. Is your mouth watering yet? Next, pasta is added to the bowl of the melting cheese wheel and turned, scraping up the sides of the parmesan bowl, completely saturating the pasta in cheesy goodness. Top it off with oil, cracked pepper and more added grated parmesan cheese, and you’re in for a treat that can only be found in one place on the peninsula—The MeatUp Grill in Riis Park. Last weekend, Riis Park Beach Bazaar’s winter restaurant resident launched cheese wheel pasta on the peninsula. The new dish, which is not only appealing to the taste buds, but to the eyes, quickly caught attention when The MeatUp Grill posted videos of the process on social media and became a big hit for people to order at the restaurant and watch the process in front of their own eyes.
Cheese wheel pasta is just the latest sensation to come from local chef Michael Fiore. A Rockaway resident for 25 years, Fiore first took the chance on his own neighborhood after seeing how the popularity of Riis Park exploded with the Riis Park Beach Bazaar takeover. He first opened The MeatUp Grill under a pop-up tent on the boardwalk in Riis in the summer of 2017. “Living out here throughout the years. I just never felt like it was the right time to start a business here, but after Hurricane Sandy and the guys of Riis Park Beach Bazaar took over the property, I watched the development and what was taking place there and thought it was a good chance to get my foot in the door and see if I could make it without a big investment and lo and behold, it’s looking promising,” Fiore said. After two successful summers operating as one of the many food concessionaires at Riis, the owners of RPBB approached Fiore and asked if he wanted to take over Bay 9 and operate the winter restaurant. It was an opportunity Fiore couldn’t pass up. “This was another opportunity to really get the brand out to the locals and not just the summer visitors that come to the beach,” Fiore said, adding that

balls or sausage, was just the beginning according to Fiore. “The idea of the cheese wheel is that it changes. You can do a lot with it,” he said, adding that the cheese wheel will become a more regular part of the menu, but with different varieties. The next option will likely be a Cacio e Pepe version with garlic shrimp, and then a truffle parmesan with fettuccini in the future. Fiore says the cheese wheel Some of MeatUp’s other specialties. brings pasta to a whole new business has been good so far. level. “It creates a more rich flaAs a summer concession, MeatUp Grill gained attention for its mouthwatering burgers, hotdogs and fries, but the winter space has provided a larger kitchen where Fiore, who also runs his own catering company, and can really work his magic and expand the menu, something he’s been taking full advantage of. NY Lawmakers Vote to Ban Oil & Natural Gas Drilling Off NY’s Coast This week, the New York Assembly and NY Senate, including local lawmakers like Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato and Senators Joe Addabbo and James Sanders, banded with other state lawmakers to pass legislation prohibiting oil and natural gas drilling in New York’s coastal areas. Specifically the bill (A.2572-Englebright) would amend the Environmental Conservation Law to prohibit the leasing of state-owned underwater coastal lands for oil and natural gas drilling, and add a new section to prevent the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Office of General Services from authorizing leases that would result in the increase of oil or natural gas production from federal waters. In addition, the bill would amend the Transportation Corporations Law to restrict
corporations from developing pipelines associated with the delivery of natural gas or oil from the North Atlantic Planning Area. Also, development of infrastructure associated with exploration, development or production of oil or natural gas would be prohibited from New York’s coastal waters. “In order to protect our children, and all future generations, it’s crucial that we take steps NOW to protect our planet — especially the vital resources here in Rockaway and across the entire state,” Pheffer Amato said. “Working to preserve our coastlines and all associated natural resources is essential to the long-term preservation and protection of our environment, economy, and our quality of life. I’m proud to have voted yes on this bill.” Dan Mundy, president of the Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers is relieved that the bill passed. “Oil

drilling operations are inherently dangerous and even more so in areas like the North Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Rockaway. Any type of accidental release during drilling operations would have devastating effects on the waters and coastal areas of Rockaway and Jamaica Bay. “After years of hard work the
waters off our coast are now cleaner then they have been in decades, and whales, dolphins and seals can regularly be seen cruising through these waters, It is not a time to allow ocean drilling to threaten the gains we have made,” Mundy said. John Cori, president of the Rockaway Beach Civic Association and Community Board 14 member is also pleased. “Huge thanks to Assemblywoman Pheffer Amato for working hard to keep off shore drilling away from our shores here in Rockaway and the rest of NYS. This bill will also help prevent companies from laying miles of additional dangerous pipe lines just miles from where we live work and play,” Cori said, After passing the Assembly on Monday, February 4, and the Senate on Tuesday, February 5, the bill now goes to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s desk, who is expected to sign it into law.

Uncle Louie G’s Out, Mara’s In
By Katie McFadden
Uncle Louie G’s of Rockaway Beach is no more. But don’t fret. The same owner is simply breaking off from the franchise and re-opening with her own brand. Mara’s Ice Cream Parlor is opening on February 8. Mara Valentino has been serving up scoops since she opened her first Uncle Louie G’s franchise in Rockaway Beach in 2012. The new shop was the beginning of a dream for Valentino, who had been in the Italian ice and ice cream business for 15 years. She long dreamed of opening a place of her own, so when she saw an empty storefront across from Elegante’s as she enjoyed a slice one day in 2012, opportunity called her name. The next day, she signed a lease. Over
the years, the business quickly grew. Valentino went from sharing a space with Fat Cardinal Bakery, to launching mobile ice carts on the boardwalk in the summers, to moving the shop a few doors down to a much larger location in February 2018 and turning the backyard space into a mini beach paradise, where people could enjoy a scoop as they lounged in the sun. Now Valentino’s ready for the big time. As time went on, Valentino started expanding beyond your average scoop in a cup or cone, to offering a range of creative
items from wine ice cream to vegan choices to signature hand-dipped treats and unique, delicious, creative and unduplicated shakes, sundaes, Belgian waffles, ice cream pies and other items that filled her imagination. Uncle Louie G’s started to become more filled with Mara’s makings, so it only seemed right for her to officially call the shop her own. While Valentino enjoyed having Uncle Louie G’s as her distributor, she started seeking out the finest ice cream and her search brought her to Gifford’s Famous Ice Cream.

Gifford’s, a family-owned creamery in Maine that has been making ice cream since the 1800s, makes ice cream from scratch, using fresh milk and cream from local farms and slow-churning it by hand. Mara’s Ice Cream Parlor will continue to offer more than 70 flavors of Italian ices and ice creams, and the specialty items that the neighborhood has grown to love, plus new items and flavors. The store re-opens at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 8, at the same location (92-14 Rockaway Beach Blvd). “We invite everyone to come down and taste all we have to offer. As most people would say, That Mara is terrific… but she’s Just a little nuts!” a press release read, referring to the shop’s new slogan.

Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
The Opioid Crisis The opioid crisis is a real and growing concern in the U.S. As the only legal and regulated source of opioid prescriptions, physicians are increasingly under the regulatory agencies’ microscope and many physicians, including me, are reluctant to prescribe them at all. The problem is, however, that there are many people with chronic pain disorders who rely on these drugs for pain relief. Today I would like to delve into the use of opioids for pain relief. There is a distinction between chronic use of opioids for pain relief and opioid use disorder, commonly known as
addiction. Patients who take opioids daily for pain relief do not necessarily have opioid use disorder, even if they have a physiologic dependence on them (i.e. withdrawal from and tolerance of opioids). Physiologic opioid dependence is often confused with opioid use disorder, however it is the expected result of regularly taking these drugs. Opioid use disorder is a chronic disease of the brain characterized by loss of control over opioid use, resulting in harm. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, fifth edition, excludes physiologic dependence on opioids (tolerance and withdrawal) from its
criteria for opioid use disorder if the patient is taking opioids solely under medical supervision. To be diagnosed with opioid use disorder, patients need to do only two of the following within 12 months: take more of the drug than intended, want to try to cut down without success, spend a lot of time in getting, using, or recovering from the drug, crave the drug, fail to meet commitments due to the drug, continue to use the drug even though it has caused social or relationship problems, give up or reduce other activities because of the drug, use the drug even when it’s not safe, continue use even when it causes physical or psychological problems, develop tolerance (but not if taken as directed under a doctor’s supervision), or experience withdrawal (again not if under supervision). In a country where nearly 40 percent of adults are prescribed an opioid annually, the question is not why people start taking opioids, but rather why some struggle to
Page 25 stop. A recent study looked at nearly 1,000 opioid-naïve patients who received an opioid prescription. Of those given at least a one-day supply, six percent were still taking them one year later and 2.9 percent were still taking them three years later. The study concluded that the total amount of opioids prescribed for acute pain was the best predictor of chronic opioid use and that chronicity begins earlier than thought. In other words, if opioids must be prescribed for pain (for example after surgery), the lower the dosage and number of pills prescribed, the better. More importantly, it must be remembered that there are many people with chronic pain conditions like advanced osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, and fibromyalgia, just to name a few, who rely on opioids for legitimate pain relief. We need to make sure that these people do not get unfairly stigmatized as having opioid use disorder. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com.

Lending a Helping Hand During the winter months, it is important to think about helping someone in need. I think about people who don’t have proper heat and have to get to work using multiple forms of public transportation, no matter what the weather. I just want to suggest that if the need presents itself, to try to find a way to lend a helping hand. I am inspired by the many individuals and organizations in our community who thoughtfully give aid in many different forms. An article in last week’s RT
highlighted a woman who took it upon herself to help individuals in meaningful ways. Not sending the annual donation to an organization or showing up to a fundraising event, but taking the time and spending the energy to make it happen. I commend her efforts and have taken it in. She is doing it with love and compassion, and that is very special in our busy times. Not to say that donating and supporting events aren’t very valuable, just focusing on the sort of grass roots approach,

which becomes so meaningful for both the givers and the receivers. Another article (you guys were on a roll) reported a plea from a distant daughter for people to visit her mom with amazing results. Goes to show you that people are willing and able to help, just need to have the information so they can take action. Communication and networking in our community really works wonders. Families used to live very close to each other, but this is no longer the case, so we have to look at all as if they were family, especially when they are in need. I know I have shared the following before in this very column, but it is always present in my daily life. Gratitude for our heat, our clean water, our cars, our every thing that makes our lives comfortable and easy, and gratitude for our family, friends, acquaintances who fill our lives. Not taking anything for granted, being grateful and counting our blessings - literally - is completely
fulfilling. More fulfilling than any amount of gold necklaces or handbags or electronic equipment... I can assure you of that. External vs. internal. We can satisfy our worldly desires which happen in our external lives, and we can feed our internal capacities by nurturing all of the good feelings that come with being grateful, compassionate and loving. Best of both worlds. Living within our means, getting what we want and can, and not getting into stressful debt, focusing on and nurturing our inner lives which helps us to help others, and giving ourselves some space to be who we are, living with ease and enjoyment. May seem like a “tall order,” but I can tell you it is definitely doable with being present, conscious thought and a compassionate heart. Life goes by so quickly, why not make it meaningful? May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

SLICE OF LIFE By Beth Hanning Amazing, Inspiring This past Saturday, I attended the event, “Take The Plunge for Annie McMahon.” I attended this event 19 years ago when it first started at the old Tap and Grill bar. The event grew larger each year, so they then moved over to St. Camillus’ Springman Hall, and now it is at the Colony Theater in Breezy Point. I do not know why I have not attended in many years, but I will be back every year. For those of you who do not know, Annie McMahon is a 22-year-old young woman who has battled Cystic Fibrosis since she was 18 months old.
Nineteen years ago on a bet, a family friend, Jim Mullen, said he would jump in the water if people donated money. When he had $500 in his pocket, he called Annie’s dad and said that he guessed he had to go through with it. Nineteen years later, over a million dollars have been raised for Cystic Fibrosis research. In March of 2018, Jim passed away and this year, they held the event in his honor. The reason I will try my best not to miss this event each year is the inspiration I left with after hearing Annie speak so passionately about living each day
to the fullest. Now, I am not one to cry, some people actually say I am missing a sensitivity “chip.” Well, after Annie’s speech, I was shedding a few tears. But that was not the only moving speech. While Annie had her double lung transplant, she met a group of other young women who have battled cystic fibrosis for most of their lives. Annie has labeled them her “cysters.” To hear them speak so positively of their experiences of being in and out of the hospital for most
of their lives and trying to have a normal childhood was very uplifting. Another thing that is so uplifting is that even though this family was nursing a sick child, they hosted this amazing event
Page 27 each year. I find it so inspiring that even though their child’s life was in danger, they hosted this event that raised so much money for research. Now each year, they donate money to various organizations and this year the money was raised for an organization called Help Hope Live, which is a non-profit organization that helps families with the costs that insurance does not cover. One of Annie’s “cysters” said that the organization helped pay for her expenses to come from North Carolina to New York to have her multiple surgeries. So the next time you hear yourself complaining about something trivial, remember Annie and her “cysters” and their positive spirit and determination to live, and live with a purpose. Annie and friends, you are amazing young women. To Annie, Theresa and John McMahon, their entire family and friends who helped to run this great event, thank you for instilling some sensitivity in me. I’ll see you next year. Maybe I will even take the “plunge.”

I am losing sleep and am not happy about another store owner selling the same exact products that I do. I don't feel very enchanted about it, and I feel like it's directly stealing business from me. I'm not sure if this fits in the category of what you write about or cover in your work, but I like what you have to say in other instances, so what should I do? And am I right to be annoyed? I’m worried that I am losing business because of my com-
petition, plus this puts me in a bad mood, and I’m having a hard time getting over it. Dear Lucy Lack, If we were talking in person, I would have a harder time saying this, but here in writing, it's easier. You are wrong. And I will explain why, and what I'm about to say can also cover jealousy or envy of any kind. In any situation, I do not believe there is any ounce of competition. To me, that is limited thinking. Competition is based on scarcity or lack. Like there are not enough custom-
ers so that everyone can have success. If someone is selling the same exact products as you, it's ok. The other place is in a different location, sold by a different business owner, so although it's the "same," the experience of buying it for the consumer is very different. When there is fear that you won't be successful because the other person will "take your business," you are clinging tightly and playing small. With the internet and the many creative ways to market products and get attention from visibility with social media, there are abundant ways to advertise and market. The old paradigm of competition is old because products and services use to be sold in a "perfect and professional" way, where who sold the item or service wasn't a factor. So, if person A had a vacuum to sell, and person B had a vacuum to sell (and they are the same vacuum) it's competition. Today if person A comes to sell the vacuum, and also happens to include five vacuum coaching
Page 29 sessions, and person B offers three cleaning sessions with the vacuum, they are different experiences. I'm being a bit funny, but not really. When you feel the competitiveness, and your fear of not having success in your business comes up, get creative. Get visible. Visibility equals success. It can be anywhere on social media, a podcast, a contest etc. How can you make your products or your business more fun? More magnetizing? Your biggest resource?? The answer is your resourcefulness. For more info on Enchantress Shane, and her work with men and women to have more self-expression, courage and intimacy, you can reach out to her at love@enchantedembodiment.com

Today’s view is a portion of a Jamaica Bay map featuring Broad Channel drawn in what I think was about 1895. Records say it was drawn in 1901 as a transportation map. My opinion is due to the fact that Beach Channel Station (lower right) on the bay, the LIRR trestle was opened in 1888, and the proposed Jamaica Bay Trolley landfill was started in 1898, then completed in 1901.The fill is not shown on this map. The Bay Trolley was never realized, and the fill became the base for the Jamaica Bay Road in later years. I have added a due or true north marker, as well as numbered places such as follows: Barnes Creek, which went under the Broad Channel
Station to the west and almost reached Shad Creek, Shad Creek Flats, The Raunt Station, Bacon Creek, Broad Channel RR Swing Bridge, Raunt Channel, Big Egg Marsh and the Trolle Fill Area.

Muffin Tin Turkey Meatloaf with Mashed Sweet Potatoes By Sharon Feldman
Ingredients: Cooking spray for muffin tin 1 pound ground turkey ½ cup matzo meal (or breadcrumbs or panko crumbs) 1 large egg, beaten 4 cloves of garlic (I like garlic) 1 large shallot, diced 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1-1/2 teaspoons Italian herbs (I used a combination of: parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, caraway and coriander) 1 teaspoon tomato paste Kosher salt Freshly ground pepper ¼ cup ketchup
1 tablespoon brown sugar 2 large sweet potatoes Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray muffin tin with cooking spray. In a large bowl, mix ground turkey, breadcrumbs, egg and garlic. Add Worcestershire, mixture of herbs, tomato paste, salt and pepper, and mix well. Divide mixture evenly between 12 muffin tins. In a small bowl, whisk together ketchup and brown sugar. Brush half the ketchup mixture over the meatloaf. Bake for 35 minutes, until cooked through. Remove from oven and brush meatloaf with remaining half of ketchup mixture. Peel and cut sweet potatoes into small pieces. Boil until soft and tender. Drain. Either use a masher or food processor to texture you like. Add some butter and cinnamon. Spoon potatoes over meatloaf. Voila!

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
Sexuality and Autism — Part 1 This is a very touchy subject, and for months, I’ve been reluctant to face it, mostly because I was trying to stay in blissful ignorance, but now, it has become a BIG problem. What do you do when your child with autism starts touching their private parts? A few days ago, I was called for an urgent meeting at my daughter, Soanirina’s (aka
ADVANCED HEARING AID TECHNOLOGY
Soa) school. I knew the topic was going to be about my 10-year-old little girl touching herself, and I was extremely rattled. The school had sent several notes at home mentioning that she was touching herself publicly and rubbing against a chair or a ball. Initially, I got several letters from the school nurse, requesting that I take my daughter to the

For Less Than $200
How can a hearing aid that costs less than $200 be every bit as good as one that sells for $2,250 or more? The answer: Although tremendous strides have been made in Advanced Hearing Aid Technology, those cost reductions have not been passed on to you. Until now... MDHearingAid® uses the same kind of Advanced Hearing Aid Technology incorporated into hearing aids that cost thousands more at a small fraction of the price. Over 300,000 satisfied MDHearingAid customers agree: High-quality, FDA-registered hearing aids don’t have to cost a fortune. The fact is, you don’t need to spend thousands for a hearing aid. MDHearingAid is a medical-grade hearing aid offering sophistication and high performance, and works right out of the box with no time-consuming “adjustment” appointments. You can contact a licensed hearing specialist conveniently online or by phone — even after your purchase at no cost. No other company provides such extensive support. Now that you know...why pay more?
Can a Hearing Aid Delay or Prevent Alzheimer’s and Dementia? A study by the National Institute on Aging suggests older individuals with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop Alzheimer’s and dementia over time than those who retain their hearing. They suggest that an intervention — such as a hearing aid — could delay or prevent this by improving hearing!

pediatrician to find out if she had a urinary tract infection (UTI). I took Soa to the doctor several times, and each time the results were negative — no UTI. Then, the teacher deduced that Soa’s self-touching symbolized that she was beginning to sexually explore her private parts. At home, I noticed it for a long time, and would just tell her, “Stop! Remember, quiet hands!” She would stop, have a fit of giggles, and then resume as soon as I turned my back. She wouldn’t do it in the shower, but when she was sitting or lying on the bed or floor. I believed it was not sexual at all, just another sensory behavior. She had outgrown so many of her stimming behaviors over the years, so I naively thought that this was just another one that she would outgrow. Well, apparently not. At the meeting, here I was surrounded by her teacher, assistant principal, school coordinator, the nurse, and school psychologist. After describing her behaviors, the teacher tried to reassure me that it was perfectly normal for my little girl to start sexually exploring her body. Her concern was that she wanted us as a team to help “redirect” the behavior by teaching Soa the appropriate time and place to stimulate herself. I was horrified. I grew up in a Christian household, and was taught that masturbation is a sin, whether private or public! Of course, I could not express that at the meeting, and felt really conflicted and confused. At 10 years old, I don’t remember engaging in such activities. I responded by saying that I didn’t believe her behavior was sexual at all. I mean, don’t people masturbate to climax? My daughter wasn’t doing that. I felt that she was just stimming, like for example, when she wiggles her fingers in the air or flaps her hands. They all just looked at me, and unanimously shook their heads. I have to say, the staff was all very kind and were just concerned that her public touching would affect the atmosphere for the other special-needs students in the
The Rockaway Times classroom. Though I’m concerned for the other students, I’m more terrified of the outside world. Soa is nonverbal, her body is developing, and there are some serious sickos out there. This is what gives me nightmares and keeps me up at night. Parents, I’m sure, you all have the same worries, and are witnessing similar behaviors in your children on the spectrum, whether they are 10, 16 or 24. This will be the topic of discussion at the next Rockaway Beach Autism Families (RBAF) support group meeting, happening on Thursday, February 21, 7 p.m. at Knight of Columbus, 2nd floor. In the interim, feel free to email your sentiments and experiences at ourartisticchild@outlook.com, and join Rockaway Beach Autism Families group on Facebook. Also, note that if you are an educator, therapist, healthcare professional or social worker, your input is welcomed, and feel free to join the Facebook group and attend any group meetings. There’s so much to discuss on this topic, but in the interim, here a few resources that may be of help: • NYSTART, a NYS Office for People With Developmental Disabilities community-based program that offers training, consultation, therapeutic services and technical assistance to support eligible individuals and their providers. For more info, call 718-217-5537 or visit: opwdd.ny.gov/ny-start/home • Books: The Boys’ Guide to Growing Up, The Girl’s Guide to Growing Up: Choices & Changes in the Tween Years. • Plus, I have pictorial handouts on how to distinguish PRIVATE from PUBLIC. Stay tuned. More to come.

Ulrich Gets Captain Endorsement The NYPD Captain’s Endowment Association (CEA), a union representing 2,100 active and retired members of law enforcement, endorsed Councilmember Eric Ulrich’s campaign for NYC Public Advocate. The CEA is the second major law enforcement organization to endorse in this race, and will be actively campaigning to ensure Ulrich’s victory in the February 26 Special Election. Ulrich has already received the endorsement of the Detectives Endowment Association and their 18,000 members. “Eric Ulrich is the only candidate in this race with a consistent record of standing up for law enforcement throughout his career in the City Council,” CEA President Roy T. Richter said “At a time when other candidates are vying to antagonize the law enforcement family, Eric Ulrich has always been there for us, and it’s no question he will represent the interests of active and retired Cap-
tains alike in the future.” Richter continued, “As a Councilmember, Eric’s support was not limited to policing and policy, but when many of our members, residents of his own district, saw their homes destroyed by Hurricane Sandy, Eric was there in the district and at City Hall making sure all
of our members could rebuild their personal lives as well.” Ulrich said “I’m proud and honored to once again receive the endorsement of our NYPD Captains. As Public Advocate, every member of law enforcement will have a voice in our office and know that I will always have their backs.”
Ulrich also noted that the “revival of New York City took place on the backs of our police, who not only restored safety and security to New York City, but enabled the City’s economy to grow exponentially, and who continue to make New York the safest big city in America.”

Facts You Probably Don’t Need
Fern collecting was such a hot fad in the Victorian era that it even had a name: pteridomania. Wax-modeling pioneer Madame Tussaud was nearly executed by guillotine during the French Revolution. When pirate Richard Worley, captain of the New York’s Revenge, captured his second ship, he named it the New York Revenge’s Revenge. Over half the world's population lives within a 5000-mile-wide circle in East Asia. Only two unmarried presidents have ever
been elected: James Buchanan and Grover Cleveland.
111,111,111 × 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321. (6 x 9) + (6 + 9) = 69. Zero is the only number that can't be represented in Roman numerals. 555 is used by some in Thailand as slang for "hahaha," because the word for "five" is pronounced "ha". Avocados are poisonous to birds. Facts from Sean McVeigh, factologist.
