I flew to Austin, Texas and then drove down to San Antonio last weekend for a midwinter break. People watching is a favorite sport of mine — except when I’m on a plane. Then I just hate people. This trip was no different. I was so annoyed, I knew I’d need some emotional support for the trip home, so I went to some ranch and bought a 2000-pound longhorn. I was immediately pleased with the thought of my new pet making its way down the aisle. I’ve been hit with enough luggage and sizeable rear ends that a little payback was in order. You might have heard about the woman who tried to board a plane with a full-sized peacock last week at Newark. She’d bought a ticket for the bird so she wasn’t trying to
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2018
Page 5
The Land of the Fee get by on the cheap (though the peacock didn’t have to get extra leg room like so many of us). I don’t know if the bird has a last name but I presume his name, Dexter, was on the ticket. I’m a little surprised the bird didn’t get through. I’m more surprised that it wasn’t on my flight, sitting right behind me. Sometime after takeoff the comfort pet would make itself more comfortable by pecking at the back of my head. So, anyway, I’m in Texas where everybody drives doing 90 and they’ve got whiskey sampling rooms on back roads. There’s a website called ArmsList which is like Craigslist where you can on impulse buy a Glock for $700. I figure getting a longhorn on a plane wouldn’t raise an eyebrow. But getting the longhorn in my rental car was too much
so I took him back to the ranch and the guy asked if I wanted him for dinner. Jeez, they take this barbecue stuff seriously. The idea of an emotional support longhorn wasn’t completely about revenge. I needed some comfort after looking at my hotel bill they slipped under my door in the dark of night. You know, you spend $225 a night plus taxes and it starts getting pricey. And that’s fine. But, and I mean but, an amenity fee? Yea, they get you for more than $250 and they add $7 a night for amenities. I thought that’s why the price was north of $200 because the place had, you know, amenities. Everybody complains about taxes but friggin’ fees are far more insidious. Former mayor, David Dinkins, holds the honor in my mind for devising the most devious (yet laughable) fee of all
time. He didn’t want to raise taxes (because everyone complains) but he added a surcharge to the income tax! A fee for having to pay taxes. Classic. They do it elsewhere now but I think Dinkins was the inventor. Airline fees. Bank fees. Phone fees. Red light ticket fees! Yea, you have to pay the fine but if you get caught in Nassau County they charge you for having to deposit your check. These fees are designed to piss you off — what other explanation can there be? By the way, I swear, I wrote this in Austin and when I got on the plane home, sure enough, there was a comfort dog sitting next to me. I waited to be peed on. But nope. I've never sat next to a better passenger (so there). I started thinking about getting my own comfort pet. But no, I bet there's a fee involved.

With the football season coming to a grinding halt, and our beloved St. Patrick’s Month still three weeks away, it's time to gather our best aquatic formal wear and dancing shoes, and strut on over to Poseidon’s Prom! Poseidon’s Prom is the annual fundraiser for Rockaway’s new favorite end of summer tradition: The Poseidon’s Parade. This year’s prom will take place, as always, at the Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th) this Saturday, February 10 at 7:30 pm. The yearly fiasco is an explosion of art, music, dance, and raffle prize insanity. Like any other prom, the event reaches its climax with the crowning of the prom king and queen, who get to lead next year’s parade! This regal reward traditionally has members of the Rockaway Mermaid Brigade bring their “A-game” to the big dance. In order to have a big dance, a party needs some big acts. The music will be provided by a legendary combination of Indaculture and DJ Paddy Tubz! This will be Indaculture’s first gig of 2018, and will include the full lineup. DJ Paddy Tubz, who is rocking his third prom, will be coming off a big performance in, “Bold Dramedy,” this Thursday, February 8 at the Davenport Theater. I asked Chris Rudolph of Indaculture about the lineup. He stated, “Whenever Indaculture and Paddy get together, things get weird. And we all know that, according to Dr. Gonzo, “when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.” Speaking of professional weirdos, Rockaway’s most zany and talented artists will have their art on display and for sale. John Cori, Kayla Curran, Morgan Kopecky, Rebecca Rembert, Kiyan Hagan, Marybeth Galvin, Casey Butler, and Geoff Rawling will all have visual art featured at the prom. Geoff Rawling, Captain of the Rockaway Mermaid Brigade also created this year’s official poster. I called him to ask about the posters: “The de-
sign is in black and white and features Miss Columbia. It can be found at businesses all over The Rock paired with crayons. Use the crayons and color them in. It’s not rocket science!” he muttered before hanging up. Many businesses “all over the Rock” have contributed to make this event, and the parade in general, a huge success. I checked in with the team’s internet guru Alex Cannon. She proudly read the list of sponsors that will be offering prizes for the much anticipated Chinese Auction: “Crom Physical Fitness, Pico RBNY, Bungalow Bar, Whit’s End, JKS Printing, Betsy’s Bungalow, Ocean Bliss Yoga, Glorified Tomato, Brooklyn Roasting Company, Rochelle’s Face Painting, Fat Cardinal Provisions, St. James and Boarders Surfshop, Rockaway Theatre Company, Rekindling Wellness Spa, Woke Lashes, Healy’s, Hawk Eye Productions, and End of the A!” I met with Casey Butler, the tyrannical queen of Poseidon’s Parade Inc. at her home. Amid the many boxes of prizes, art and decorations, she said, “I would like to thank all of the sponsors, artists, helpers, participants, and especially The Knights for graciously hosting us once more!” Tickets can be purchased at http://www.poseidonsparade. com/. Tickets can also be purchased at the door for $40 and include open bar and appetizers from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. There will also be a 50/50. Dress to impress!

***** Maybe we just need a few Eagles fans here. It’s been a longtime problem in Rockaway about how some people don’t pick up after their dogs. If you don’t know what we’re talking about, just ask someone who goes online, about horse poop and celebrations. We like underdogs as much as the next fan, but if horse poop replaces champagne, we’ll stick with the favorites from now on. ***** Speaking of the Super Bowl, we get the feeling that just as many people were talking about television’s This Is Us. We can’t report it as news, but we hear a lot of people were sobbing. We hear a lot of people were sobbing. We can say certainty work flow at The Rockaway Times was interrupted.
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2018 ***** Keep an eye out for details of the Third Annual Rockaway Times photo contest. Last year we were supported by the NYC Parks Department and the Jamaica Bay Rockaway Parks Conservancy which allowed us to place poster-sized photos from Beach 19th Street all the way to Riis Park. It’s a great way to show that Rockaway’s Got Talent. ***** Friday is National Bagel Day. Rockaway may not have a movie theater. Rockaway may not have a men’s clothing store or a new car dealership or a bunch of things, but we’ve got some great bagel choices. ***** We got a nice tip from a reader about a plane noise complaint hotline. Call 1-800-225-1071 if the noise gets out of control. You can also go online to fill out a complaint form and find out more about what’s being done. Go to PlaneNoise.com ***** It’s Saturday and you’re wondering what to do. Why not
check out the Poseidon Prom at the Knights of Columbus? The fun event raises money for the great parade in September. It starts at 7:30 p.m. and DJ Paddy Tubz will make sure it’s a good time. ***** Of course, she offered an apology. But Alicia Glen, the city’s deputy mayor, was guilty of honesty when she testified in a deposition in a case on the city’s behalf regarding affordable housing. According to Politico, she said about City Councilmembers: “They are often extremely confused and ill-informed and not that smart.” If Eric and Donovan want to respond, they know how to find us! ***** Your child can attend a pre-K program in the 2018-2019 school year if he or she was born in 2014 and lives in New York City. Families can apply now. The deadline to submit an application is March 30. Go to http://schools.nyc.gov/ for information and how to find a program.
Page 7 ***** We’ve experienced just about everything else so it’s understandable why some people thought a tsunami was on the way. The National Weather Service via Accuweather sent out a text alert about a Tsunami Warning but it was just a test (a detail which was not in the alert). ***** Want to add your voice to the MS/PS 42 proposed closing? The DOE is holding a joint hearing with the school and community at the school (488 Beach 66th St, Arverne) on Tuesday, February 13 at 5:30 p.m. Food will be available at 5 p.m., if you’re concerned about missing dinner. Show up by 5:30 to be added to the speaker’s list. ***** Want to be a boardwalk vendor? Food vendors are needed in Far Rockaway from Memorial Day through Labor Day at Beach 9th, 17th, 25th and 32nd. Vendors must have their own food cart. The weekend rate is $100 to $350 depending on the location. Call 646-463-3271 to find out more.

Local Hockey Star Chases Olympic-sized Dreams By Katie McFadden
As the Winter Olympics kick off this Friday, February 9, a local young girl is gearing up to chase her own Olympic dreams. Rockaway could see one of its own hitting the ice in a future Winter Olympics as a hockey goaltender by 2022/2026. Rosalyn Lim-de Castro is just 15 years old, but she’s already dreaming big about her future. The Rockaway Beach teen is about to embark on a
whirlwind adventure that will take her all the way to the Philippines, and maybe one day, to the Olympic hockey rink in Beijing for the 2022 winter games. Like many Rockaway kids, Lim-de Castro has long loved surfing, but at the age of eight, she fell in love with another sport that takes place on water—but the frozen kind. She started playing ice hockey after her stepfather, a goaltending coach, taught her the game, and she’s been playing ever since. “It’s my outlet. Surfing is also my outlet, but hockey allows me to express myself. Whenever I step on the ice, I feel like I was meant to be there and it really takes my mind off of anything else going on in my life,” she said. “Whenever she’s on the ice,
I can see that she’s in her element, just as she is when she’s in the water,” Rosalyn’s mother, Janice de Castro said. But her mom isn’t the only one who has noticed Rosalyn when she’s in her element. A professional team has also taken notice. With minimal options in the local area, over the past few years, Lim-de Castro has gone as far as Pennsylvania and New Jersey to play on competitive teams, with the latest being the travel team, the Princeton Tiger Lillies. As Lim-de Castro worked her way up the ladder toward a college hockey career and beyond, the young Filipino American caught the eye of the Philippines National Women’s Hockey Team, an organization that was only recognized by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the governing body for ice hockey, in 2016. In the early spring of 2017, Lim-de Castro received an email that would change her life. She received an invitation to play with Team Pilipinas at the Hockey 5's Tournament in Hong Kong, the largest ice hockey tournament in Asia, in May 2017. With an offer she couldn’t refuse, Lim-de Castro went to Asia to play in the tournament as goalie for the Women's Team Islanders Pilipinas, and the team—and “Ros” dominated. The team took Gold in the tournament and Lim-de Castro was named Most Valuable Player. After proving to be an asset, Lim-de Castro now has the chance to take the team even further as they attempt to qualify for their first Olympic games. But to do so, the young goalie has to make some sacrifices to chase bigger dreams. In order to fulfill her requirements with the IIHF, which is also the governing body for Olympic Ice Hockey, Lim-de Castro must live in the Philippines for two years. After completing that requirement, she’ll be able to play in the tournament that could qualify

the team towards reaching the Olympics. She’ll be living in Manila by March 1. “I’m definitely excited because it’s a new opportunity and a door to an entirely new chapter in my life, but at the same time, I’m nervous because it’ll be a fresh start,” Lim-de Castro said. Adjusting to life in a new country will be a challenge, but for Lim-de Castro, acclimating to her new team won’t be a problem, even though she’ll be the youngest player by at least four years. “I won’t have to worry about adjusting to the new team. We all clicked really well at the tournament in Hong Kong. They were very welcoming,” she said. Lim-de Castro’s mom and little brother will also be joining for the adventure. “You want to support your children’s dreams. You can tell when something is just a pipe dream, and when they have the determination to really achieve it. For Rosalyn, this isn’t a pipe dream. She work hard, trains hard and makes the sacrifices that she makes at such a young age. She wants this and I do everything I can to help her achieve what she sets forth to do, despite the hardships and sacrifices as a parent. The best thing I can do for any of my children is
help them achieve what they want to do,” Janice de Castro said. “Plus, it’d be awesome to be cheering her on from the stands at the Olympics one day. That’s gonna take a lot of work, but it’ll be amazing to see her not just represent the Philippines, but New York and Rockaway.” Lim-de Castro says she’s going to miss her hometown. “I’m going to miss Rockaway. I’ve only lived here for four years, but it’s become a true home to me. I know all the locals, I see them out on the water and around town, and it’s like having a big family here,” she said, adding that between her busy training schedule, she’ll try to find time to surf the beaches of the Philippines, which are a few hours outside of Manila. However, she’s ready to embark on this next step. “I think I’m ready to jump into the new chapter of my life. I’m just gonna take it step by step. It’s a big change, but I think I can handle it,” she said. Lim-de Castro’s dream and the big changes that come along with it, come at a high price. Her family has started a GoFundMe page to help cover some of the out-of-pockets costs. To help support Ros, head to www.gofundme.com/ RosTeamPilipinas

Lights Out Dog Park-ing Dear Editor: I don't know if you are aware of the recent actions by the NYCTA by the dog park on 83rd Street. Apparently, following an altercation with a man with a dog, the manager of the NYCTA site behind the dog park erected a fence to keep people bringing their dogs to the park from parking under the El, which the NYCTA claims as their property. This is a big change for those of us who have been using this dog park and parking under the El for a long time. If this is NYCTA property, why are their no signs stating such? Why are they not maintaining the area? It is used as a dumping ground. I parked under the El on Thursday and the NYCTA employees locked the gate, effectively impounding my car even though there was no signage stating this was their property. My car was later released, but I would like clarity on whether the NYCTA was acting within their rights. It would seem to me that the NYCTA could have easily erected a gate further down the driveway by the entrance to their building if they were concerned about threats from either dogs or people. By placing a gate at the entrance to the driveway, the utility of the dog park is severely compromised. Deirdre Powers

Dear Editor: I enjoy walking on our new boardwalk, oftentimes at night. I noticed several lights out and complained to 311. That was two month ago (no doubt, another failure of the de Blasio administration). They’re still out with even more out at this point. I spoke to a Welsbach Electric Co. driver who said they don’t have a contract to fix the boardwalk lights. So who does? I sent a letter to Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office. I’ll write to him again when he replies. Unlike Congressman Meeks, who hasn’t replied to any of my letters. James Murray

Opioid Opinion
Not So Hot Wind Dear Editor: Fort Drum, NY along with many other upstate towns refuse the windmills — the Governor's 'Green Power Fiasco,' according to Saturday's NY Post — and so the Governor will build out his stupendous (stupendously stupid) Wind Farm offshore Rockaway, and that's perfectly fine with Senator Addabbo, and probably fine as well with Councilmen Ulrich & Richards as well as with environmentalists like the 'in-Sane' Energy Project people. As the Post also points out, New York's energy costs are some of the highest in the nation and with the building of some 200 200-foot high windmills on the Rockaway shelf, electric bills here & elsewhere across the state will only go higher. And so, most unfortunately, the joke, the fiasco, will not only be on them, but on us. Pete Stubben

Dear Editor: (In response to Ask The Doc’s column on life expectancy and the drug problem) As mentioned. the life expectancy in the U.S. has recently declined largely due to the result of the opioid epidemic and alcohol related issues. The opioid epidemic in the U.S. has been responsible for approximately 64,000 deaths in the year 2016. The medical community, including the pharmaceutical industry, shares some responsibility for this crisis. Opioids were originally intended to be used for individuals with terminal illness to alleviate severe pain. Their use is now extended to individuals who suffer from pain, which can be easily managed with Tylenol and a short-term course of NSAIDS. The U.S. accounts for approximately 4.8 percent of the world’s population, but its prescription rate for opioids is about 80 percent. Drug overdose leading to death
is obviously the most severe consequence of the opioid epidemic, but its impact on morbidity is also a major issue causing a major rise in health care costs. Two major issues facing the health care community is in dealing with opioid induced constipation (OIC), which occurs up to 60 percent of the time, and the narcotic bowel syndrome occurring five percent of the time. Hopefully with more awareness of this devastating health care crisis, the long-term outlook can be improved. W.Erber MD

Rockaway At Work PAT RORKE, OWNER OF SPA ROCKAWAY
By Frances Feuer
Have you ever wondered what people do all day at their jobs? I have, and that’s the basis for this column, Rockaway at Work. As soon as I enter Spa Rockaway, I know this is a place of calm and healing. Voices are hushed, the fireplace is glowing, the seating is comfortable, and the atmosphere is peaceful. There are two signs, “Relax” and “Speak softly, spa treatments in session,” and I intend to respect both. I am here to watch Pat Rorke, and see what she does all day as the owner of a spa. Rorke starts her day at home, catching up on emails, and posting inspirational and educational messages on social media sites like Facebook and Instagram. Then she eagerly arrives at the spa at 9:30 a.m., which is a half hour before opening time. Rorke says she loves coming to work “because good feelings and energy flow here from person to person.” Rorke allowed me to accompany her to the treatment area to see the different treatment rooms
for massages and for facials. I was impressed with the ambience of the treatment rooms. The pictures, the lighting, the colors of the walls, all create the feeling that here is a place clients will be well taken care of, and pampered. I was curious about what Rorke does when she gives a client a facial. A new client fills out a consultation form, listing his/her issues and problems. Rorke then talks with the client, and discusses the process. The client lies down on the comfy, heated bed in a wrap, and Rorke analyzes the client’s skin with a magnifying lamp. Are the pores clogged? Is there puffiness? Is the skin dehydrated? Are there dark circles under the eyes? Rorke applies essential oils for relaxation, and then cleanses the skin twice. She exfoliates the skin with steam to open the pores, and then applies whatever treatments are appropriate. Then comes an application of hot towels, followed by a massage of the face, neck and upper chest area, to promote circulation and stimulate the muscles. Luxurious!

Rorke is a member of the Nutritional Aesthetics Association and a New York State licensed esthetician. I had to ask her what an esthetician is. An esthetician is a therapist who takes care of skin by analyzing it and helping it to heal. Rorke created, and uses in the spa, her own line of skin care products, Skin Holistic by Pat Rorke. She worked with a lab and a formulator to create a line of “natural botanicals of the highest quality” for a “holistic approach to skin health.” “After trying many products and just not getting the results,” she felt it was “time to develop her own line.” Her decision to become an esthetician and design these products was made because Rorke says, “I love the changes I can make in someone’s skin.” Rorke tells me that “Spa Rockaway’s most important asset is the staff. “The teamwork of everyone here is over the top. We have always felt like a family here, and I’m grateful to be working with such a devoted, kind-hearted, talented group of women, whose main concern is the wellness and health of our community,” she said. The staff includes massage
therapists, Jamie, Victoria, Johanna, Colleen, Lorraine, Lucie, and estheticians, Marcia, Lauren and Tina. They are supported by her front desk staff, Kate, Tana, Megan and Theresa. Rorke, as part of her job, is constantly learning. Rorke told me that “Spa Rockaway is unique because we combine the ancient healing techniques of Eastern medicine with state-of-theart techniques of the Western world.” She is continually studying ancient Chinese healing techniques; and is certified in face yoga, gua sha, an ancient Chinese technique for massaging the face with jadestone, and reiki healing. When I left, she was about to hold a training session for the estheticians in a new treatment and ingredients. Spa Rockaway is located at 112-20 Beach Channel Drive and is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, with late nights, until 8 p.m., on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Running a business, developing a skin care line, constantly learning and training others, caring about the community and healing…Rockaway works hard!

Broad Channel Choir Brings New Life to Church Music By Nicole Taylor-Lang
The power of music brings people and communities together, that’s just what Margaret Wagner and Doris Dady did when they started the St. Virgilius New Life Choir in Broad Channel three years ago. Both co-founders, Wagner is currently the Choir Coordinator and a singer and Dady is the Choir Director. “Church is a celebration of God and music makes it more of a celebration,” says Dady. “It brings us together.” Now the choir is celebrating with its first recorded album. The choir started in late 2015, when Wagner took to social media to see if there were any local choirs to join. “I thought to myself I want to do something that makes me happy and I always loved singing,” she says. “It makes me feel good.” To her surprise there was no local church choirs to join. Luckily, her friend Doris Dady happened to check her Facebook that day. “I don’t go on Face-
book very often but happened to go on and saw Margaret’s post,” she said. Dady, who ran the choir in the 80’s, messaged

make a great team.” Originally working together back in ‘96 when they formed the Broad Channel Theater Group, they knew that by working together something great would come from it. Now a group of 18, the choir performs on church holidays and special occasions at St.Virgilius Church. “One of the best things has been seeing the reactions of people in church. Often they have stayed after services and turned to applaud us up in the choir loft,” say choir member, Dan Guarino. “It feels so good to know we have done something that has touched people, uplifted them.” The group comes together to practice once a week and Dady also puts their singing parts up on their website, so it is convenient for them to practice at home. The choir itself consists her that day and they both de- of different parts like soprano, cided to form the St. Virgilius alto, second alto and contralNew Life Choir. “From there it Continued on page 15 blossomed,” says Wagner. “We

CHURCH MUSIC
Continued from Page 14 to. How are those parts determined? With a simple song. “When people first join I have them sing happy birthday,” says Dady. “From that song I get an idea of what group they should be in.” Wagner says Dady has been instrumental in encouraging the members. “Doris has more faith in us than we have in ourselves,” Wagner said with a laugh. “We know we did a great job when we look at Doris' face and she looks like she is going to cry.” It was Dady who believed the choir should let their voices be heard even further by putting them on an album. Their very first CD, Faithful Songs of Praise, was released in late January. “I thought it would be nice to have something to look back on and pass down in our families,” says Dady. The CD was recorded and produced by Zack Magliaro, Dady’s brother. “My favorite part about making the CD was seeing it from start to end. Then hearing the end

product I got chills,” says Wagner with smile. The recording took place at the North Channel Yacht Club, which generously let them use the hall to make the album. “The most interesting experience was each of us going one by one to record our particular part of each song. Just us, a microphone and a pair of headphones for the background,” said Guarino. “But when each of those voices were blended together, and the music and instruments were added, it was amazing!” The CD can be downloaded for free at www.thenewlifechoir.org. The choir is always open to new members. “You may surprise yourself,” Dady said. “Some people come to us not thinking they can sing very well and now they are wonderful additions.” Members do have to be at least 16 years of age, but professional singing experience is not required. “There is no pressure. We are just people coming together to sing,” says Wagner. You can contact Wagner at 347-236-2018 if interested.

LESSONS IN LOVE FROM THE FIFTHGRADE WRITERS OF PS/MS 114 Shining through the windows, bursting through the rafters, smiling from every face in every classroom, PS/ MS 114 is wall-to-wall love. And, just as important as its excellent academic environment, is this love that makes our kids warm, secure, confident and eager to learn. In our school, it’s Valentine’s Day, every day! Love is all we need, - Mrs. Diehl PAYTON SHERIDAN The words of rage roll off my sister’s tongue. The beastly words cut my heart like a knife. The sleeping dragon inside me awakens. A protective shield, separating the dragon and the world, bursts like a bubble and the dragon breaks free. It fires its daggered words back. The dragon grows angrier and angrier until the words it fires back could make the Hulk bawl like a baby. I see the tears well up in me and the victim of my attack dragon. All of a sudden, the dragon shrinks down to the size of a penny and I try to apologize, but it’s too late. The damage is done. The heartbroken look on my sister’s face makes me want to cry. The sorrow I feel could fill an entire ocean. The dragon falls back into a deep slumber only to awaken again when heart-breaking words reach its den. And when they do, the dragon will sling-shot wretched words back at its target. My hope and my dream is to slay the dragon living inside of me. Then its evil powers will never hurt my sister or anyone else again. Valentine’s Day is coming around and I want some of its magic to be sprinkled on me and my sister so we can be as close as we were when we were little. I want my old pal, my partner in crime, but most importantly my best friend to make me happy again. I want to make her happy, again. Maddy, I love you to the moon and back. Happy Valentine’s Day!
AYDIN AKCIN Strange, dark clouds shadow above me when I hear the female dragon’s deafening calls for dinner. A storm is forming with lightning strikes, and a twister brings Thunder as his “plus-one.” My blood is pumping inside my veins. My head is pounding, and I want to let the Lightning and Thunder scream. And if I let it scream, it will say, “Mom, give me more time on my iPad!” But I know better than to talk back to my mother. For the millionth time I let the dragon win, and slowly I close the screen in front of me. I walk the walk of shame to plug in my iPad in the kitchen, where a rotisserie chicken is waiting for me. When I finish my agitating homework, one of the things that darkens my day, I get my pot of gold at the end of my rainbow. I get to watch whatever I want on my iPad. But day after day, I realize that I am addicted. Is that the way I want to spend my evenings every day? “Yes, I love it,” says my devil. “No. It’s not healthy. Plus, you’re not gaining anything,” says my mom and the angel that fights my devil inside. Should I stop staring at a screen for a whole afternoon, or keep going? For days a debate goes on in my own court called, “The Brain.” Sometimes when the dragon screams, “Dinner!,” the judge at my court starts slamming the gavel, “Order, order!”; my head starts pounding. The days of trying to solve this case turn into weeks, and the weeks turn into months; yet, deep down, I know my Mom is right and her advice comes from her love for me. Happy Valentine’s Day, Mom! I love you, too. SEAN WODZANOWSKI If a tornado had a seizure or a chunk of the world were in a blender, the destruction would never compare to the destruction of my feelings when

life-changing moments occur. Adapting to those moments would help my life move along more easily. When my Nana passed away, instead of her life flashing before her eyes, I saw ours. We were at the beach, collecting shells with ridges down the edges. The shell broke suddenly — just like my heart did when she wasn’t there anymore. As that memory faded, another knocked on the door of my heart. Opening the door, I saw droplets of chocolate syrup causing the pure, white milk to go into a creamy brown. Still drinking it today, it reminds me of Nana since she made chocolate milk for me every day. Like it was her blood, it kept her life going on in me. Letting go of a loved one was hard, but giving away a house filled with fragile memories was harder than getting over my fear of rollercoasters. In other words, my brain is a china closet while my memories play the role of china. The china is packed in tight, ready to burst out. Bursting out would cause them to break and I’d lose these memories forever. If I hadn’t moved from Brooklyn to Queens it wouldn’t be packed so tightly. I’d be able to put them back together because that’s where they were made. Having my memories in a safe that only my heart could open would have serious impact on adapting to changes in my life. I still mourn the death of my ancestors. I still grieve the day that I moved. With Valentine’s Day coming up, my heart will be pouring out all my memories of love. NICHOLAS LANGELLA I used to have a problem, I couldn’t write. It was almost like all odds were against me. I thought I was cursed. Whenever I even tried to write, something went wrong. Either my pencil broke or my paper ripped. It was like a sign from God. Like he was whispering in
my ear for me to quit. The only problem for Him is I don’t quit. And, I’m not going to quit until I get my writing grade up to 4.5. This was my dream, and according to Walt Disney, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” So now, when I sit down to write, I sharpen a few pencils, and get out a clean, shiny piece of extra paper, which reminds me of the ice at the hockey rink, just after the Zamboni finishes and just before I jump onto the rink to skate. More importantly, I take some time to think about what I’m going to write. Like a builder, I gather my tools and make plans before I start the job. That way, I don’t get mixedup or confused. Oh, and one more thing I do before I start to write, I ask God for inspiration. It can’t hurt to have Him on my side. Then, it almost seems as if the pencil is writing itself. My thoughts take on a life of their own, and the pencil records it all. It’s as if I’m sitting beside myself watching me become a great writer. Well, I’m not a great writer yet, but maybe someday... Not too long ago, I had this experience when I wrote my poem, “On The Ice.” The words just flowed like I do when I’m on ice skates. I was the most surprised guy when I learned that the poem is going to be published. So, it’s Valentine’s Day and when I think about the things I love, I think about writing. JOYCE LIN “Um…thanks?” I murmured, forcing a smile. I guess the “Um...” part gave it away. My grandma looked hurt. “No, no, no!,” I quickly explained. “I didn’t mean to be rude. I like your gift — um, no wait — I mean I will like it when I open it.” I sighed as I replayed that scene in my head every time I looked at the tiny black box. My grandma gave it to me the day before, but I hadn’t touched it since. I don’t know why, but it Continued on page 38

Local Lets Her Light Shine in New Children’s Book By Rosemary McGuire
Christine Banker, Rockaway mom, wife, artist, poet and designer, now adds author to her list of accomplishments with the release of her first children’s book, “We All Have a God Light. Banker uses the unexpected instance of a nightlight burning out and the fear of the dark to introduce the reader to the concept of the God light in all of us—tying in themes of love and connection along the way. Banker says it’s a simple book with a powerful message, that she hopes starts a conversation between parents and children on the importance of being kind and compassionate. Ironically, a book about light and connection, love and kindness was born out of frustration at the derisiveness in the current state of affairs surrounding us. “Everything felt like division, Banker said. “I realized complaining was doing no
good and I needed to take action. Her action first came in the form of a poem, which grew into her children’s book extoling the beauty and “God light in all of us. But using the word “God, she found out, was her barrier to having it traditionally published. Many refused, suggesting she change God to more acceptable, less offensive words, such as universe or spirit. But this time it was she who refused. “This was part of my
frustration,â€? Banker said. “Why can’t we say God? I believe that there are many people out there that want to use the word, God, and speak about God’s love and connection freely.â€? And it’s not focused on any one God, she says. “We All Have A God Lightâ€? is for anyone from any religion.â€? It’s a book of inclusion and more about kindness than a belief in any one god. It’s a book of connection and love. A message about a light within that connects us all that eschews our outward appearance and focuses on what’s inside — because that’s what really counts. She uses simple terms to explain to children that we are all created by God, and when we do something nice for someone, we feel good inside. That’s our God light. You feel proud. You feel connection. “Think about it,â€? Banker said. “It makes us feel good to do something good for someone else. side than the person receiving. That’s our God light.â€? If Banker’s book does well, she hopes to spread that God light by helping others. “I hope to pay it forward by helping local charities and veteran groups if this book is successful.â€? Although her own children are now in college, she wrote this to send a positive message of what she hopes for her children and her children’s children: A bedtime story with a positive message of love, connection and giving. “We all have a God light,â€? Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
If you are a parent or caregiver like me with a child on the autism spectrum, you’ve probably spent an uncountable number of hours sleuthing the internet, tirelessly searching for the ‘miracle’ therapy for your child. From Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) to Hippotherapy (horseback riding), the amount of therapies purporting to be the Autism messiah are endless, and not to mention expensive! I know of one family in Florida who remortgaged their house just to pay for one of these exorbitant miracle-workers! Youser! At the last Rockaway Beach “Artistic” Families (RBAF) support group meeting, a parent mentioned a little-known therapy called, The Miller Method (MM). According to the parent,
The Miller Method — A Visionary Approach for Autism instead of working against the characteristics of autism, the MM uses individuals’ autistic behaviors to help them connect and function appropriately with the outside world. In my challenging journey with my nine-year-old nonverbal daughter on the spectrum, the best suggestions I have received are from parents, who’ve been done there, done that and got the t-shirt to prove it. So intrigued, I had no choice, but to return to my nocturnal surfing of the Internet to find out more about this quietly innovative Miller Method. The MM was developed by Arthur Miller, a psychologist, who with his wife, Ellen, started the school, Language and Cognitive Development Center in Boston, Mass. in 1965. From then to the present, with research and demonstration grants from the U.S. Department of Education, the Millers introduced a range of in-

novative strategies (known as the MM) for helping developmentally challenged children achieve their fullest potential. What is the philosophy behind MM? According to their website (millermethod.org), “We maintain that each child — no matter how withdrawn or disorganized — is trying to find a way to cope with the world. Our task is to help that child use every capacity or fragment of capacity to achieve this. “Working on the premise that children with autism learn more effectively when their whole bodies are involved, the

MM covers major issues such as communication skills and social play, as well as day-today behavioral issues including tantrums, aggression and toilet training. Part of MM includes guiding the child on to The Elevated Square, a device that gets the child off the floor and markedly diminishes toe-walking, hand flapping and aimless wandering. By creating a highly-defined reality that requires the child's rapt attention to traverse it, the Elevated Square helps counter some of the significant challenges these children confront.” Even more intrigued, I watched a YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=_IILni8te6I) where both ABA and The Miller Method were tried on a four-year-old boy with autism. ABA, a more popularly known and well-established therapy (that is even Continued on page 24

In the video, the boy was rewarded when he said the words, “cup and “go. I wondered, “Is the boy just repeating or actually connecting word to object or task? My daughter received ABA through NYC’s Early Intervention Program, and I remember questioning the act of rewarding her with a snack when she said a word, and depriving her when she didn’t say or do what was requested. That said, in the video, with the MM, the boy was placed on The Elevated Square, where he had to push, pull, place and open various items, all the while simultaneously keeping his balance and maintaining eye contact with the therapist conducting the task at hand. I liked the MM demonstration because I felt the boy was gifted a sense of competence, and an awareness of self in opposition to the other person and the general environment. Thank you to everyone who came out to the RBAFSG meeting last Thursday! The meeting, graciously hosted by Jane Garfield Frank (thanks so much Jane!), was meaningfully different. It was the first time where folks not only shared, but brainstormed a plethora of events to promote autism awareness in Rockaway, and activities for our children. Stay tuned! I talk about autism to open doors into the reality of our lives as caregivers, build understanding, tolerance and growth of our “artistic children. Share your thoughts by emailing ourartisticchild@ outlook.com or check out the Rockaway Beach “Artistic Families support group Facebook page. We would love your feedback!

A galaxy called z8_GND_5296 is the oldest object in the known universe. It's estimated to be 13.1 billion years old, which is about 700 million years younger than the universe itself. The oldest known object on Earth is a 4.4-billion-year-old crystal, a zircon, that was found in Jack Hills in Western Australia. It's only 160 million years younger than the Earth itself.

It's 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4.2 seconds. Jason Statham was a competitive diver before he became a famous actor for films like 'The Fast and The Furious' and 'The Transporter.' CAVEAT EMPTOR
I recently received a mailing from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) promoting their partnership with a New Jersey-based company, American Water Resources (AWR), to offer me a water and sewer service Line Protection Program. The DEP promotion states that this voluntary program
is designed to protect me from the unexpected costs of service line repairs as "Most homeowners are not aware that they are responsible for all of the costs associated with repairing damaged water or sewer service lines that run from their building’s exterior to the municipal service lines in the street. These repairs are not covered by most homeowners insurance policies and can cost thousands of dollars....As a homeowner and DEP customer, you can enroll in the protection programs, and AWR will take the responsibility of paying for service line repairs off your shoulders." A quick look at the cost of this service protection indicated it was not prohibitively expensive with an annual cost of just over $150 with monthly rates of $12.96 ($4.49 for water line protection and $8.47 for sewer line protection) with
such charges to be included in your DEP water and sewer bill. I thought to myself, "Hey, you never know when a water or sewer line problem might happen requiring expensive repairs so perhaps maintaining a service contract with a 24-hour emergency number and the guarantee of a prompt response and repair would not be a bad idea." So far so good. Then I took a quick look at the program's "terms and conditions" whereupon I found that AWR specifically laid out some 30 instances of
water and sewer line problems and issues, which they state they will not pay to repair including, but not limited to, any repairs not resulting from normal wear and usage, any repairs required as a result of a natural act (flood, earthquake, hurricanes, landslides and the like), repairing anything caused by defective materials, restoring garden, shrubs, trees or structures damaged or removed by any authorized water or sewer line repair, thawing and sectioning of your water or sewage line,....the list of problems not covered by AWR in this program just goes on and on. A lawyer friend of mine called this fine print section of the terms and conditions a "killer" and that the myriad of stated exclusions should make anyone think twice before signing up for this Continued on page 27

BETWEEN THE BRIDGES
Continued from Page 26 coverage. On the other hand, the only information AWR provides regarding what they will be responsible to pay consists solely of the following very general (and vague) statement that "AWR will pay for any repairs to any breaks or leaks in my water line or any breaks, clogs or blockages to my sewage line resulting from normal wear and usage." I then called the AWR 24hour hot line at 888-3003570 in an attempt to get some clarification as to exactly what type of repairs would be covered under this program. My call went unanswered for some 20 minutes due to "high call volume," which I found interesting as it was 3:45 in the morning. When I did finally contact AWR, much later that day, they simply told me to refer to the terms and conditions
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2018 in the flyer provided by DEP. The bottom line is that AWR takes great pains to outline exactly what it will not cover and yet offers only a general and very vague (normal wear and usage) description of those repairs it will pay for. Thus, as with any other insurance or warranty program — buyer beware! You should do your own due diligence to learn what is and is not covered and what exceptions apply. If your water and sewage lines are old but still functioning without defect, then perhaps this type of coverage is worth your while. On the other hand, those homes with brand new water and sewage lines, such as the residences on West 11th, 12th and 13th Roads where the street raising and new bulkhead project was centered, would not make this type of coverage cost efficient. Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Namaste We start our yoga class with our palms together at our heart center in Anjali Mudra, a prayer-like gesture. It is also known as Namaste, a common yoga greeting meaning, “I acknowledge that the light in my heart and the light in your heart are the same.” We are grateful to have this simple practice called yoga that calls on all human beings everywhere to be happy, healthy and peaceful. There are no expectations, no judgements, no perfection, we are just trying to
support one another and feel good about ourselves. There are so many different styles of yoga and from my experience they are all good. You just need to find the one that works best for you. Naturally, as an align and flow teacher, I tend to promote my style of yoga that I teach and practice. When I am aligned to what is correct for me, my body feels good and my mind is at ease. From this feelgood feeling, flows inspiration, creativity, joy and abundance. I have never taught a class that

The physical part of yoga is for a beginner’s mind, the advanced student is able to sit quietly with their breath and be content. Practice, practice and then keep practicing. I am still practicing every day and I am most certainly a student for life, learning something new every day. Yoga is healing to the mind, body and soul. You will become connected to something much higher than yourself when you learn to sit quietly. It is a devotional practice even if you don’t believe. You will slow down and begin to peel the layers of the heart, one at a time. Yes, it is a process and it takes time, patience and practice. Never be afraid to walk into a yoga studio, all are welcome. Yoga is for everyone. The Rockaway Times when you have gone beyond being human, you will without doubt, become an Angel; you will be done with earth, and Heaven will be your home. Go beyond even that angelic condition. Dive again into God’s boundless Ocean. So your drop of water at last transforms into the Sea.” -Rumi. This quote describes how yoga makes one feel! There are these subtle layers that come alive within the inner landscape. One does not have to look outside but rather within in the interior of your body. Here is a secret about yoga. You will become strong and centered. The connection you make with your mind, body and soul will allow you to be one with yourself and others. Hence, the word Namaste. We bow to one another and honor the divine light in each and every one. So the next time you hear Namaste, bask in the beauty of the light within your soul and one another. May you be at peace, may you be happy, may you be safe and may you be at ease.

Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Heart of the Matter The year 2017 marked the 50th anniversary of several important developments in medical care. In 1967, a classic study by Killup and Kimball was published regarding the care of patients admitted to New York Hospital for myocardial infarctions (heart attacks, or MIs). In the study, these patients were placed in a specialized hospital unit where they had constant monitoring of their heart rhythm. One of the greatest dangers following an MI is the sudden development of an abnormal heart rhythm, or a fatal arrhythmia. The authors of the study reported that this heart
monitoring, along with staff trained to respond quickly to an arrhythmia, significantly reduced mortality from MIs. This was the birth of the coronary care unit, or CCU. Prior to this study, patients admitted for MIs were placed in wards with other patients (hospitals years ago had some private rooms for the privileged few but most patients were admitted to large wards where there were 10 or 12 other patients in the same room). Patients with MIs were placed in the ward with an oxygen tent and mortality rates were 30 to 40 percent. Primitive monitors

were sometimes used but were not watched constantly. After this study, the National Institute of Health (NIH) supported the Myocardial Infarction Research Unit, or MIRU. Under MIRU, CCUs were set up in multiple hospitals around the country. Many of the faculty and trainees in the MIRU program would go on to become leaders of academic cardiology for years to come. During the MIRU project, deaths from heart attacks dropped precipitously. MIs are classified according to severity using the Killup classification system where Class I is a mild heart attack with no complications to Class IV is a major heart attack with shock, heart failure, and other complications. In the past 50 years, there have been many advances in the management of MIs including coronary artery bypass surgery, which also celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, coronary angioplasty and stents, intra-aortic balloon pumps, and left and right ventricular assist pumps (both devices are used to help a failing

heart pump blood), anticoagulants, Beta-blockers, and hypothermia (cooling a patient with an MI). Thanks to these and other advances, the mortality for Killup Class III and IV patients has been reduced to under five percent and the mortality for Class I patients is negligible. Other advances outside of the hospital like pre-hospitalization coronary care by trained paramedics and automatic external defibrillators have also helped reduce mortality. In recent years, patients admitted to CCUs have more critical illness and complications, and the care of these patients goes beyond the skill of a clinical cardiologist and often requires the care of cardiothoracic surgeons, intensive care specialists, and many other specialists. For this reason some experts are now saying it is time to move beyond the CCU and create a “cardiac intensive care unit,” or CICU. Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes.com

Scouting For Kids Activities? Sign Up Your Child for the Troops! By Kami-Leigh Agard
Are you a parent longing for a local recreational activity for your child where not only fun is on the agenda, but learning lifelong survival skills and developing hobbies in the natural outdoors that will impact their lives for years to come? If yes, why not consider enrolling them in the Girl or Boy Scouts? There are local Boy and Girl Scout troops you can enlist your youngin’ in, and even opportunities where you can start your own. The Rockaway Times spoke to a few parents who zealously took the initiative to be troop leaders of scouts, and here’s what we learned. Broad Channel (BC) resident, Karen Allen, a former Girl Scout herself, and a mother of three with a fourth child on the way,
is the troop leader for the Daisy, Brownie and Junior troops in BC. “I took on the role of troop leader just about two years ago. I’m a busy mom with three kids just over a year apart, but being a Brownie was such an important part of my life as a kid. I learned so many skills, made life-long friends, and I wanted my girls to have the same experience. My oldest daughter, Makenzie, age 6, is very shy, and I didn’t want her to miss out on the experience of being a Scout. With mommy being troop leader, I thought it would encourage her to join and come out of her shell,” Allen said. Allen, along with co-leader, Allison Nocco, run a host of activities for the girls that revolve around learning crucial life skills and helping others. Just this past Monday, February 5, the Dai-
sies got their CPR badge, where they learned first aid training by practicing on baby dolls, such as how to bandage a wound, sling an arm and even perform the Heimlich maneuver on choking victims. Allen said, “The girls loved it! We even used graham crackers with red icing to make the wounds look real.” Other activities Allen and her gaggle of girls have engaged in include, ice-skating at Aviator Sports at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, an annual daddy-daughter
dance which takes place every spring, a Thanksgiving food drive done in conjunction with churches, St. Camillus and St. Virgillus, and last fall, the girls ran a lemonade stand to raise money for Texans who were hit by Hurricane Harvey. “Our goal is for the girls to learn skills that will in turn help others. As parents, we have to get involved when they are so young. Sports are also great. My children acContinued on page 37

Advice For Valentine Blues Dear Enchantress, I am struggling, I don't want to care about Valentine’s Day, but I do! I wish a man would ask me out! I don't want to silently struggle and suffer any more. How do I meet a man? How do I meet a man that wants to date me? Do men ask women on dates anymore? I'm divorced and have no kids. I know everyone thinks I'm happily divorced, but I long for partnership again. I am physically active and take really good care of myself. I do yoga, I eat healthy, I go out for drinks, but not excessively. There seems to be so many more single amazing women than men. I don't hate men, I want one special someone to have in my life. I don't need money, I work and like what I do. I am not needy or impatient. I'm frustrated, and I want attention from great men, not the drunk ones that lose their courage if they are not drinking. Any tips or pointers would be helpful. Valentine Seeker Dear Valentine Seeker, Don't lose hope. I am with you in this boat ;). While I am happily living without a partner, I know it would be lovely with the right one. SO first, congratulations that you are not settling or selling out on what kind of man you are dating! That's big! And great work on taking care of yourself! Now I turn to sex magic and conjuring. AH HA! This is most exciting stuff! The magic work that I am so passionate about, it's creating a reality before it happens, just by you willing it to be. SO first
write out the longest list of details of what you want in a man, a romantic partner. I mean everything, what emotional qualities, what material items, what beliefs (political, spiritual, mental etc.), what family structures he admires, what he thinks about sports, weather, clothing, children, ALL OF IT! Next write a letter to him, (as if he already exists) and you are both madly in love. Put it in a red envelope and place it under your mattress. As you’re writing, breathe in the feelings that you will actually hand this letter to an ideal man in the near future! Write from your heart and your deepest desires. A good old-fashioned love letter. I will save the sex magic for private discussion if you desire. You can email me, it's that sacred. I used this process years ago, and I FELL IN WILD love with a man who lived in Israel, years ago, and I kid you not, he said things to me that I had written in the letter! Enchantress Shane coaches and guides women wanting more magic and confidence in their lives. To ask Enchantress Shane a question, email her at Love@enchantedembodiment.com. Also you can attend Beginner Burlesque in Rockaway!

SCOUTING FOR KIDS ACTIVITIES?
Continued from Page 33
tively participate in sports such as tee-ball at the Broad Channel Athletic Club (BCAC), but I feel the Scouts are in a league of their own. These girls are learning and growing with each other on how their contributions can help the world at-large.” Allen’s daughter, Makenzie, who has earned 13 badges, loves being a Daisy. “As a Daisy, I have made so many friends and learned a lot of skills in all of our activities. And the best part, my mom is here helping and encouraging all of us,” Makenzie said. Allen said they accept new scouts all-year long. For information about how to join, email: karenblake118@yahoo.com Bill Scanlan, of Belle Harbor, is the troop leader for Cub Scouts Pack 147 and Boy Scouts Troop 187. Both troops meet at West End Temple (147-02 Newport Ave) every Thursday. The Cubs meet at 6 p.m. and the Scouts meet at 7:30 p.m. Though parents can enroll online (scouting.
org/resources/online-registration/), Scanlan said that folks can come in person to register. As to why he chose to be a troop leader, Scanlan said he was a Boy Scout. “As a Boy Scout, I had the most memorable experiences hiking, fishing, camping, learning a plethora of skills like archery in the natural outdoors, and I wanted my son, and other children to share a similar experience. Of course today’s society is so different with smart phones, iPads and social media, but the outdoors can still be appreciated and even combined with technology today. Scouting has evolved with new badges in digital technology and even game design.” Just last year, Scan-
lan’s Cubs visited the Camden Aquarium in New Jersey and the Scouts did a historical hike in Philadelphia, and later they all spent the night on the USS New Jersey (BB-62) battleship. Scanlan’s 13-year-old son, Haiden, started as a Cub when he was just seven years old and is now a Scout. “I think the Cubs and Scouts are great because they mold you into a well-rounded individual. They both teach you skills that you never would learn at school. In school you learn academic subjects, and sports teach you about team-work, but I think the Scouts teach you invaluable skills that you would never learn anywhere else. For example, I
Page 37 earned badges in welding and small-boat sailing,” Haiden said. Belle Harbor resident, Lori Eisenberg Creamer, who with Robyn Weiner, started local Girl Scout Troops 4275 and 4474 14 years ago, encourages parents to start a troop of their own. “Get a group of girls who are interested and a bunch of moms to volunteer, and start a troop of your own. Creamer said, “Robyn and I went for training to start our own troops, and today we are so proud of all our girls. Two of them reached the highest level, which is the gold award. Also, all the girls love the community service projects they engage in such as volunteering at nursing homes and food drives.” For information on how to start a troop, visit: scouting.org for Boy Scouts and girlscouts.org for Girl Scouts. Ian Carsell, age 11, a member of Scanlan’s troops, summed up the overall Scout experience with this: “I really like the friends I’ve made and the activities are really cool, but most importantly, I feel really proud we help out the community.”

LESSONS IN LOVE

gave me the creeps. My best guess is that the creeps came from the guilt I felt when I remembered Grandma’s expression when I didn’t open her present right away. Finally, when my curiosity almost killed me, I opened the box to reveal something I couldn’t believe. Inside was the most beautiful bracelet I had ever seen. The gorgeous bracelet shone like a million stars. I carefully placed the bracelet in my hand for a better view of its texture. It looked and felt so delicate that when I touched it, I thought I heard it shatter. I rotated the bracelet to inspect the shiny diamonds. As the morning sunshine peeked through my curtains, the bracelet glistened like the sea under the sun. The bracelet was golden like the sun with tiny diamond beads embedded around it. I eagerly ran to my grandma to thank her for the gift. “I knew you would like it,” she smiled. “Your dear old Grandpa gave it
to me. I treasure this bracelet. I never let anyone see it, let alone touch it! You are special, Joyce, and don’t ever forget that.” I let those words echo in my head for a hundred times as I embraced my grandma warmly. “Thank you grandma, I never knew I was special to anyone,” I whispered. “Did you see the words carved in the inside?” She asked. Words? Inside? “No, I don’t think so… I guess I was too busy looking at the outside to even bother with the inside,” I admitted. Finally, I looked inside and squinted to see the words carved on the bracelet. “You are forever mine,” I read. I grinned to my grandma, “I love you!” This was one of my first lessons in love, and it showed me what they mean when they say, “Good things come in small packages!” CASSIE MCDADE It was a first-grade soccer game and the parents were screaming at the top of their lungs, “H” “O” “P” “E”, Hope,

Hope, Hope." The sound of the cow bells, rung by the opponent’s parents, echoed through the wide-open fields of Fort Tilden. I wanted to take those cowbells and give them right back to the cows. This team looked like giants compared to us. Uh, uh, no way, I was going out there on the field. So, my mom and I sat on the rusty, old bleachers like two forlorn puppies. The thought of stepping onto the field made my skin crawl. All I wanted to do was disappear, like a turtle going back into its shell. My mom would have no part of that. “We are staying for the whole game,” she warned me, “Being a part of a team doesn’t only mean playing. It means supporting too.” Time seemed to stand still. The wind howled. The cow bells clanged. The players chased one another up and down the field like alley cats fighting in the night. It was hard to believe halftime would ever come, but it did. Finally, my coach came over and spelled it out. “Cassie, we don’t have enough players. We could really use you to play goalie.” Hmm. That didn’t seem like such a bad idea. My mom could stand right next to the goal post like a goalie guard, I thought. So off I went into the goalie position. With my mom right by my side, they could have scored a million goals. It didn’t really matter to me. Having my mom there was what got me through the second half. Game over. I figured out how my mom could be by my side on the soccer field. Goalie would be my position. I decided to share this brilliant idea with my mom. This was going to be great…no more competing on the field. How smart was I? But what I didn’t take into account was how much wiser my mom was. “I’m going to tell coach, I want to be goalie,” I said with great confidence. “Goalie is a tough position, Cassie. You are too good of a defensive player. You have speed,” Mom advised. “Nope,” I replied putting it all on the line, “If I play goal-
The Rockaway Times ie you can stand by the net at each and every game.” My wise mom replied with firmness, “You are not playing goalie.” Well, this wasn’t going the way I expected. How could my mom love me so much and force me to go out onto a soccer field while butterflies fluttered in my stomach? So, we continued to go to soccer games and my mom’s patience and encouragement helped me get out onto that field time after time. Today I wouldn’t be the soccer player I am, if my mom let me succumb to my fears. If I had stuck with my “brilliant plan” of playing goalie, I wouldn’t be the skilled field player I am right now. My mom’s overwhelming love always helps me conquer my fears even when they get the best of me. This was one of my first lessons in love. QUINN BRESLIN “Meow,” cried Morty, my cat. “Sorry Morty,” I said. “I have to feed myself first, I’ll be back in a sec.” But the thing was, I never went back to feed him. Instead it was my mother who fed him that morning. Let me tell you about Morty, my cat. Morty is like an Oreo. It is like he has black and white painted all over. In my eyes, he’s rated a level higher than the sweetest thing on earth. I’m not even sure what level that is. Anyway, while I was watching the 90th Grammy Awards in my living room, I was feeling a little down. I think Morty sensed it and came right to me, and comforted me in such a loving way. When I petted Morty, he snuggled up next to me and made me feel like the most special boy on earth. That was the moment I realized, not only can a dog be “man’s best friend”—a cat can, too. And, although I forgot to feed him, he still showed me love. So tomorrow I will remember to feed him, and the next day, and the day after that. I will feed him until the day that he can’t eat anymore. And for all those days, I will feed him with love and I will be my cat’s best friend.

WORLD KARATE
Continued from Page 40 Samurai training, others are more modern, perhaps only a hundred years or more. In all cases, the Kata were developed by the Masters to develop the basics (Kihon). Each Kata is a series of choreographed movements, which are practiced and memorized. They are meant to develop speed, reaction time, and technique in case of an attack. The Kata develop defense and offense (counter attack) against an opponent. All Kata begin with defense, never offense. As with Kihon, the Kata go from beginner through advanced levels of training. These take months and years to master, and Mastery is recognized with the ranking system: White Belt through Black Belt (and beyond). A continuing endeavor is the development of the Kumite. Kumi-Te literally means fighting hands. The Kumite (sparring), is the combination of the Kihon and the Kata in a way that the student can develop his or her style according to their ability
level. This is always improving and refining. The Kumite is practiced in the Dojo with a variety of others with equal or higher rank. Weapons training is another part of the education of the Karate-ka (student). As with all the previous aspects of training, weapons are taught from beginner through advanced levels. The weapons include Bo (staff ), tonfa, sai, shinai (bamboo sword), oar and nunchuks, as well as several Chinese weapons. The promotions on January 28 included Yellow through Brown Belts. The students demonstrated their ability in Kihon, Kata, and in some higher ranks, Weapons and Kumite. The parents watching were impressed by their children's abilities. Check out the Karate program for pre-k through adult at the World Champions Karate Center, located at 112-20 Beach Channel Drive or call 718-9451618.
