As The Rockaway Times was going to press, there were reports of another shooting in the 100th Precinct, this time at Beach 88th Street and the Rockaway Freeway. A male was shot at approximately at 2 p.m. Although unconfirmed, a source said the shooting came during a dispute over a parking spot. The wounded man was allegedly shot before. In fact, nine times before. In 2012, the man was shot nine times in the Hammel Houses’ parking lot. Soon after cops put up police tape at Beach 88th Street, yet another shooting occurred at 71-15 Beach Channel drive. Although the
address could not be confirmed, this was the address of Isaiah Lee who was shot and killed on Friday, March 6th. Just a few days earlier shots were also fired on Beach 87th street though no injuries were reported. On January 20, a livery van driver was shot and killed on Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 81st Street. Police were busy beyond the shootings. A false alarm was set off the Capital One bank on Beach 116th street at about 4:20 p.m. causing many police to rush to the scene.

Rockaway Beach resident Lillian Agosto was walking along the beach on Sunday, March 8 when she came across a beached seal on Beach 73rd Street which didn’t seem to be doing too well. Agosto, along with some other animalloving beachgoers, contacted the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation, so they the rescue group could come help the animal. Agosto says she and a few others stayed with the seal in order to protect it from unleashed dogs and other dangers, until Riverhead arrived on the scene about five hours after the seal was found. “Hopefully the little guy will be okay,” Agosto said. Riverhead made a post about the seal on its Facebook page on Monday, saying “a male harbor seal was rescued yesterday by our team from a beach in Rockaways, Queens. The physical exam revealed that the animal is dehydrated and anemic. The animal is currently being tub fed fluids, and will be receiving iron supplements for the anemia. Antibiotics were also prescribed by our
veterinarian to combat additional infection.” The group thanked those who reported the seal sighting and says it will provide updates on the animal’s condition. Those who come across any marine mammals or sea turtles are advised to report the sighting to Riverhead by calling their hotline at 631-369-9829. The group says it is important to report the physical condition of the animal, but people should try to stay at least 50 yards away, which not only keeps people and the animal safe, but it is also required by federal law.

Two representatives from the City’s Build It Back Program delivered an informational presentation to Queens Community Board 14 on Tuesday night at The Knights of Columbus. The first part of the presentation shed light on a new volunteer initiative that Build It Back is undertaking with NYC Service. The program is actively looking for volunteers to fulfill a number of positions in the area. The positions include both in-office data entry roles as well as doorknockers. Following the volunteer presentation, David Louis, from the Office of Recovery, gave an update on the progress of Build It Back’s efforts in the community. According to the presentation, Build It Back has started construction on 352 houses and sent out more than 900 checks, equal to about $18.8 million, in Community Board 14’s district. They claimed to have completed work on 134 of the houses. According to the City, construction has been started on 1,060 houses and 2,775 reimbursement checks have been sent out citywide as of March 9. There are about 14,000 applicants in the program. “Those are not great numbers,” Louis said. “But we’re pushing forward and going from zero to 2400 is great progress.” Following the informational presentation on Build It Back, New York City Councilman Eric Ulrich delivered a passionate presentation concerning the more than 220,000 NYC veterans. Ulrich has long made it his mission to raise awareness and secure more funding for military personnel in NYC.
“The City plays a very unique role because we have so many veterans that live [here],” Ulrich explained. According to Ulrich, the city only allocated $400,000 of its $74 billion dollar budget for its veterans and is urging the mayor to do more. The councilman called it “a miniscule amount” for such a large number of vets who are looking to adjust back to civilian life. These programs are not just designed for the individual coming back home, but for the family of veterans as well. “That is a drop in the bucket to serve over 220,000 men and women who have served their country,” the councilman said. “The fact that we only spend $400,000 -- what does that say about our commitment level to Veterans.” Ulrich participates in a number of programs aimed to help veterans including a food drive and a job fair. “Sometimes it’s just about pointing [a veteran] in the right direction,” the Councilman explained. The Councilman also has helped individual veterans receive awards for their service. This week he will be presenting a Bronze Star with “V” device to John Chichester. Chichester served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Bronze Star with “V” device in 1969 for his heroic actions in battle. However, shortly thereafter, the military lost his records and consequently rescinded his entitlement to the latter part of the decoration. Chichester battled with the Department of the Army for over 40 years to obtain the Valor commendation but each request was denied until now.

D –Blasio: All of the Above With de Blasio it’s like a multiple choice test and he is the letter D – All of the Above. A) he’s so dumb B) he’s so arrogant C) he’s so clueless or D) he’s all of the above. Of course, I could wear out the rest of the alphabet with other choices, which isn’t too hard because I only see the worst in the guy. Some might say he was cowardly for avoiding the lion’s den at the parade. By jumping in at Beach 117th Street he missed about 80 percent of the people who gather to watch. From 116th to Beach 105 the crowd is sparse with clumps
of people here or there. He heard some boos to be sure. And some yelled at him to go back to Manhattan. But it was easy for him to shrug them off since it wasn’t a sustained thrashing like it would have been in the Beach 120’s. Some might say he’s got quite a pair and some might even utter an off-color riff on his name. At the reviewing stand, he said by official proclamation he was changing his name for a day to O’blasio. That wasn’t bad but not nearly as appropriate as another one in the air. By unofficial proclamation, he
was tagged with another Rockaway-style version. He was called de-Balls-io as in: He’s got some deBalls-io showing up late. He’s got even more de-Balls-io because he came by boat. Yes, just in case you missed that little tidbit. In November, he showed up late for the Flight 587 memorial. On that occasion, he came by boat – less than two weeks after shutting down the ferry. He said he was late because of the fog. On Saturday, he came by ferry – a police ferry. And this time he was late because he was at Gracie Mansion planning to be late. Anyway, the last two times he’s come to Rockaway, he’s taken a boat. You believe this guy? That’s where the tough question comes in: is he arrogant or clueless? I don’t think his own aids know the answer to that though one said there’d be a ferry here in 2017. And the mayor said one was coming (though he didn’t say what year). In either case, he takes a ferry, the rest of us can eat cake. De Blasio’s lateness riled many – though honestly, many, many, many people were happy not to see the guy. A large contingent don’t want to see him in the first place and are grouchy if he’s a noshow. Among those who seem tickled by the Mayor’s lateness were
Queens Boro Prez Melinda Katz, NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer and Public Advocate Letitia James (who gets points for asking for a moment of silence to remember Cardinal Egan who died earlier that week). Here’s their dilemma: they know people don’t like de Blasio but is that enough to challenge him? On the other hand, if they just hand him a second term, the next Mayoral race won’t be until 2021 and it’ll have a million candidates. So, they gotta be thinking, should I primary this chump? Some staffers from the Bloomberg administration were digging the de Blasio tabloid slaps as well. I’m guessing Bloomie himself was happy to see the New York Post on Sunday. Regarding de Blasio the headline blared: St. Putz. Worst Mayor Ever. I met Bloomberg a couple of years back. I told him I was from Rockaway and saw him at the parade. He said “I heard F U from start to finish. They said F U and I said Thank You.” He didn’t say the clean F U version, he rhymed with truck. But that’s how you’re supposed to handle it. You show up on time, you take your boos like mayor.

Turner To Head Queens GOP
008
After years of legal disputes and in-house disputing, former Congressman Bob Turner will be the next chairman of the Queens Republican Party. Ed Cox, the head of the New York State GOP, is expected to announce on Thursday (today) that Turner will lead the Queens GOP. Cox hopes that the appointment will help to unite the party after a controversial past few years. The former executive vice chairman, Vincent Tabone, was recently nabbed for his involvement in a bribery scheme that involved an attempt to allow former former Democratic State Senator Malcolm Smith to run for Mayor on the GOP ticket in 2013. Turner, a Breezy Point resident and retired cable TV executive, won the special election in 2011 after former Representative Anthony Weiner resigned amid a sexting scandal. However, Turner’s district was carved up following congressional reapportionment and the seat went blue.

RDRC Means Business By Michael Leboff
Since 1978, the Rockaway Redevelopment and Revitalization Corporation’s (RDRC) mission has remained unchanged, “to promote the revitalization of the Rockaways economic base and to assist residents in securing an improved quality of life.” RDRC achieves this goal through a variety of programs that are free-of-charge and administered by the outfit’s experienced staff. Junor Barnett, who serves as the Homeownership & Financial Empowerment Coordinator and Compliance Officer, is quite pleased with RDRC’s results. “We try to facilitate each client and nobody is turned away,” Barnett said. “Our success rate speaks for us.” Among the programs administered by RDRC are small business advisory and entrepreneurial assistance; Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprise certification assistance; HUD certified housing counseling for firsttime homeowners and families at risk of losing their homes to foreclosure; credit counseling and financial education; youth and adult employment assistance; and youth career and college preparedness assistance. One of RDRC’s newest programs is the state of the art Time Warner Learning Center at their headquarters at 1920 Mott Ave. The program launched in December 2013 after RDRC was awarded a $50,000 grant to set up technology that can be used for anything from resume building to job search assistance. The lab has been a hit among Rockaway’s seniors looking to become more familiar with today’s technol-
ogy. Since the program started, 60 seniors have graduated from the Time Warner Cable Learning Center. The lab is open to everybody and those interested are encouraged to sign up through the RDRC website. Barnett also was proud of the work being done through RDRC’s Financial Empowerment Program. The four-step workshop begins with clients setting up a SafeStart Savings Account. SafeStart is a safe and affordable program set up by the City and is offered to all New Yorkers. The Financial Empowerment program helps educate clients about budgeting, credit, student loans, and saving. Barnett said many of those who enroll in the program are not used to saving and welcome the counseling. Whether it is a high school junior or a senior citizen, the program has benefits for everyone. RDRC also hosts business card exchanges and encourages businesses throughout the entire peninsula to attend. In addition to working with individual clients, RDRC also has an education program for small business owners and merchants in the area. Valerie West, the Director of Community Relations, says the small business program is mostly educational and aims to show merchants ways to drive more business as well as educate them on the services that are available to them. For more than 19 years RDRC has been helping the peninsula’s youth find gainful employment in the summer through the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). SYEP has since grown into one of the largest summer youth programs in the country.
The impact of RDRC’s programs stretches beyond the peninsula. Barnett said that he has had potential clients reach out to him from as far away as Atlanta, and regularly gets calls from people in New Jersey and Pennsylvania looking for assistance. On Wednesday, May 13, RDRC will host its 29th annual gala at Russo’s On The Bay in Howard Beach and aims to recognize people who support local businesses.

What’s Good For The Goose
Dear Editor: The amount of geese being turned into road kill is disgusting. Driving to Brooklyn, I saw dozens. I know some have chosen not to migrate anymore, crap all of your lawn and have become a nuisance. So what! That being said, it doesn’t say anywhere you have the right to mow them down in wanton disregard. One day, some lady was going to plow through a flock until I cut her off. She could not understand why, like she was missing an empathy chip or something. That’s deeply disturbing. I pray I hope she has no pets, or children for that matter. Regardless, geese are a protected species; lazy but protected. So to all the sick, twisted jerks who graduated from pulling the wings off files to playing road warrior with hapless, yet pesky birds, be advised: I will it make my mission to make sure you will be legally held to account for your lawless sadism. Furthermore, I will hunt you down and shame you on your stupid social media sites with Curt Shilling’s style and Jack Bauer’s wrath. In other words, I will ruin your life. So repent, get help, whatever, cut the crap. Do you feel me? In closing, these birds are God’s creatures and we have a fiduciary and moral obligation to protect them. James O’Brien
Change Needed
Dear Editor: If Al Sharpton can lie and cause the death of innocent citizens and cops with his rhetoric we can tell the truth and cause de Blasio
to lose the next election. I want the next Mayor to be smart, reasonable and from Rockaway or Queens with common sense and traditional morality. Talk is cheap. Multiply your vote and join the next campaign for our leaders. The people need to fight with both hands, politics and raising decent families. Phil McManus
Late By Design
Dear Editor: Just give it up Mayor de Blasio. You were late for our Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day Parade and why? You claimed that you had some meetings at Gracie Mansion that took a while, and you had some stuff you had to deal with you said. In my opinion, you wanted to arrive late, so please use the right word Mr. Mayor and that correct word would be “planned” to be late. Just another slap in the face to the Rockaway residents. Danny Ruscillo
Beware Of Buildings
Dear Editor: (Regarding the article about new development in Edgemere 3/5): While it is laudable that these new buildings will be energy efficient, there are many more issues to consider if you are truly going ‘Green’. The EPA estimates that people spend up to 90% of their time in buildings. Buildings are built almost entirely with materials that are synthetic, chemically processed or treated. The materials we build with can affect our wellbeing as much as the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe. For the most part, we can’t see the toxic chemicals that

Mayor Manners
Dear Editor: (Regarding how to deal with the mayor). We need new tactics with the new opportunities that came out of Sandy. Our representatives must do the yelling and pushing. We have to show up and seek the info to get what we want. We have a good Borough President and City Council reps, etc. That’s their job. My opinion is, yelling and insulting, won’t get what we need. A Concrete Idea
By Katie McFadden There’s a new type of house in town that the big bad wolf can’t blow down, or even a hurricane. Design and construction firm Leeward Living is showing “resiliency in a concrete way” through its home building. While large buildings are sometimes built from concrete, the company is building concrete houses that are designed with the coast in mind. Hundreds of local families have gone through, or are going through the process of rebuilding homes that were completely destroyed by Sandy, either by fire, flood or being knocked off their foundations. Many opt for the traditional woodbuilt home, but some are taking advantage of the new guy in town and are having concrete homes fill their empty lots. Leeward Living homes are designed to be sustainable and resilient. Built to FEMA 55 Coastal Construction standards and with guidelines set by the Institute of Business & Home Safety Fortified Program, all of the homes are designed for the coast and can withstand damage from storm surges, flooding, fire and hurricane force winds. Following FEMA flood regulations, the homes are built

on raised Coastal V Zone concrete foundations, which allows floodwater to pass right under the house, rather than right into it. They are made with hurricane impact doors and windows, so they can withstand heavy winds. The roof is also concrete, so homeowners don’t have to worry about roof repairs after a strong storm. The homes are also cheaper when it comes to long-term costs. Being made of concrete and certified by IBHS, homeowner insurance rates are lower for Leeward homes. Premiums are approximately 20 to 25 percent cheaper. Since the home is raised, flood insurance premiums are about approximately 50 percent cheaper. The homes are also built to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards. Leeward aims for LEED Platinum standards, meaning owners get the most energy efficient home they can have according to the U.S. Green Building Council. This type of building allows the owner to save on monthly bills. The company uses closed cell spray foam, which is the latest insulation technology and it acts as a water barrier and traps in heat or cool air, so the house is able to cool and heat itself, resulting in lower bills to
power heaters or air conditioning. The company uses LED lighting and energy efficient appliances, which also reduces bills. The homes are built with an Energy Recovery Ventilator, which also regulates the temperature and ensures that there is fresh, filtered air moving through the home, which eliminates toxins and allergens. Instead of a traditional water heater, the company uses a tankless gas water heater, which only heats water when hot water is needed, which also lowers bills. The homes

are also low maintenance since concrete is resistant to termites, mold and mildew. While the outside of Leeward homes are offered in two product lines: concrete and metal, the inside of the home looks like an everyday home with sheetrock walls, tiled or wooden floors and wooden cabinets. The concrete shell of the home protects the outside from strong wind and debris, but the inside provides comfortable living. “Imagine a house within a house,” Continued on page 17

DOC By Peter Galvin, MD
To continue our discussion about vitamins: Vitamin D – needed for health and to form and maintain strong bones by helping to absorb calcium. Found naturally in very few foods. Small amounts are found in fatty fish (salmon, tuna and mackerel), beef liver, cheese and egg yolks. Many foods are fortified with it, for example milk, cereals, orange juice, yogurt, margarine and soy beverages. Also formed by direct exposure to sunlight, but because of the risk of skin cancer recommended daily intakes are based on low sun exposure. Deficiency causes soft bones – rickets in children and osteomalacia (precursor to osteoporosis) in adults.
Vitamin E – acts as an antioxidant in the body (like Vitamin C) and protects against free radicals. Also boosts the immune system and keeps blood vessels open, helping to prevent blood clots. Found naturally in vegetable oils, nuts, spinach and broccoli and is often added to foods like cereals and juices. Deficiency is extremely rare while toxicity, also rare, may cause bleeding problems. Taking Vitamin E may cause bleeding in those taking blood thinners (Coumadin and aspirin), may reduce the heart-protective effects of statins (i.e. Lipitor) and niacin and may reduce the effectiveness of certain chemotherapy drugs. Vitamin K – essential for blood clotting. Found naturally in green leafy vegetables, especially kale,
spinach and collard greens, and most other vegetables. Can interfere with anticoagulant medicines, especially Coumadin. If you take Coumadin it is important to keep your daily intake of green vegetables about the same every day. Calcium – a mineral, not a vitamin. Used by the body to form and maintain strong bones and teeth plus necessary for muscle and nerve function. Found in many foods such as dairy products, green vegetables like kale and cabbage, fish with soft bones (sardines and salmon) and most grains. Added to foods like cereals, juices, tofu and soy beverages. Deficiency is common, found mostly in boys aged 9 – 13, girls aged 9 – 18, women over 50 and men over 70. Also found in people with lactose intolerance and vegans and vegetarians (they do not consume dairy products). Calcium should not be taken at the same time as certain medications as it may block their absorption. For example antibiotics, Synthroid and Dilantin. Iron – also a mineral. Essential for making hemoglobin (red blood cells) and myoglobin, a muscle protein. Found in lean meats, seafood, poultry, beans, lentils, spinach, peas, nuts and raisins. Also added to cereals and breads. Deficiency can be common in menstruating and pregnant women,

premature and low-birthweight infants, frequent blood donors and people with gastrointestinal disorders, cancer and heart failure. High levels of supplements can cause constipation and stomach disorders as well as organ failure and coma. People with an inherited disorder called hemochromatosis (high iron levels cause cirrhosis and heart disease) should not take iron or Vitamin C supplements. Supplements can interfere with many medications including Sinemet and Synthroid. Medications such as Nexium, Protonix and calcium can interfere with iron absorption. My next column will discuss the use of vitamin supplements. Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes. com. This column is published biweekly. Rockaway Animals’ Guardian Angel By Katie McFadden Christine Drakatos spends all of her free time rescuing and caring for animals in need. Rescuing animals since she was four years old, Drakatos has brought her passion to the area in recent years, through the Rescue Far Rockaway Rescue Project. Formerly living in Astoria, Drakatos has spent many hours helping animals all around Queens, but about six years ago, she discovered that Far Rockaway had its own problem with animals in need. Often receiving tips from friends, she received an email about a mother dog and some puppies living in a wooded area in Far Rockaway. “We went to the wooded area and we couldn’t believe our eyes because there was a pack of feral dogs living behind the sanitation depot,” Drakatos said. She made it her mission to trap the wild dogs, including Pitbulls, Rottweilers, and other breeds, and finding homes for them. She says since starting the project, she has rescued about 230 dogs from Far Rockaway alone and she has helped to reduce the feral dog population in the area. “I rescue dogs all over, but Far Rockaway is like my baby. That’s where
I’m needed the most,” Drakatos said. She moved to Rockaway two months ago. “I do this because I’m born to do this,” Drakatos said about rescuing. “It’s in my heart, in my blood. I rescue to live and that’s it. I know nothing else.” She says she’ll help any animal in need. In addition to dogs, she catches stray cats and has them spayed or neutered. When Drakatos rescues a stray, she often brings them home until she can find a proper home for them. She currently has 22 dogs at her home. Drakatos shares photos of adoptable dogs on her Facebook page and uses PetFinder to help find families for the animals. “My dogs get adopted to wonderful homes, and that’s what it’s all about,” she said. Not only does she rescue strays and abandoned pets, she also helps pets that may not be taken care of properly. When Drakatos sees or gets a tip about an animal living in a backyard under bad conditions, she approaches the owner in a friendly manner, explains what she does and offers to help them. She provides shelters, proper leashes, food and water and even offers to help clean up a backyard that may be covered in
feces. Drakatos says most owners have been very welcoming and appreciative of her help. She has only been turned down once. “I try to educate people on the proper way of handling dogs and taking care of them,” Drakatos said. “Sometimes it works and sometimes the dog is back to the same life as before, but just a little warmer because they have shelter.” “When I go into someone’s backyard and the dog greets me with such love it warms my heart, I know that I’ve made a difference in that dog’s life that otherwise would have suffered,” Drakatos said. While rescuing can be rewarding, Drakatos has also dealt with sad situations. She sometimes finds animals abandoned and tied to poles or animals with serious health issues. “Some days are wonderful and you know that you did a great job, but a majority of the time, it’s very sad. I don’t know how I do it, but I do.” Aside from providing dogs with basic needs, Drakatos sometimes provides animals with medical services to help owners that can’t afford it. She has taken dogs that were on their last legs to the vet for lifesaving treatments, but the services don’t come cheap. Draka-

tos has spent thousands of dollars on vet bills. She buys about 300 pounds of dog food every week and each dog shelter or igloo can cost about $300. Although rescuing is her passion, it’s not cheap. When not saving animals, Drakatos works at a job in the medical field, and often pays out of pocket for her rescue expenses. To help buffer some of the costs, Drakatos welcomes donations and sometimes holds fundraisers. On Saturday, March 14, she is holding a St. Patrick’s Day-themed fundraiser for Far Rockaway animals at Gussy’s Bar in Astoria (20-14 29th Continued on page 17

Leeward Living Principal James Willmer said. Clients can design the way they want the home to look. “You can pretty much have any home you want,” he said. They can be one floor or multiple levels. The outside concrete can be painted or siding can be added, so the outside is aesthetically pleasing. Having to build a home can be a long, complicated and stressful process, but Leeward Living minimizes the stress by handling every aspect of the process. “Because many people are going through a traumatic experience with having to deal with FEMA, insurance companies and everything else, we try to make the process as simple as possible and handle it for them,” Willmer said. The company takes care of all permitting and approvals, plot surveys, planning, drawings, engineering and the building and works on a turnkey operation so that the home is completely ready to be lived in when the owner gets the key. Willmer says it takes about six to twelve months to complete a home, which includes having to wait for permits and approvals. Leeward Living is currently working on five homes in Breezy Point and Roxbury. The first two

are expected to be complete sometime in April. The company plans to monitor some of the homes for a year to determine exactly how much each home saves in energy costs. One of Leeward’s clients, Breezy Point resident Tom McGuinness, considered other construction companies, but was drawn to everything that Leeward Living has to offer. “I saw the quality of the homes that they build and I saw the integrity and character of the individuals that represent the company and the whole package drew me in,” McGuinness said. Construction has not yet started on McGuinness’ home, as its still in the paperwork phase, but he says he trusts that the company will do a good job. “They care about the people here. They want to build the right house and they want to see the community come back. They’re very nice people that have a lot of integrity. That’s more of a selling point for me. Character means a lot. I’ve seen some of the work that they’ve done and I trust them with my home,” McGuinness said, adding that the Breezy Point Cooperative has been very helpful throughout the process as well.

Street). The party starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $15. There will be a D.J., a buffet, raffles and a 50/50 at the event. “Our fundraisers are a lot of fun. It’s to raise money for the dogs, but that doesn’t mean we just sit around talking about them the whole time. There is a DJ and food and we have a good time,” Drakatos said. All are welcome to attend. The fundraiser’s original mission was to raise money for a Far Rockaway rescue named Lea who needs eye surgery, as her eyelashes

turn inward and scratch her eyes. However, a recent vet visit for a dog name Naga, who was knocking on death’s door because of parvovirus, costed more than anticipated. Naga survived but the bill totaled $1,500, so the fundraiser will cover the additional costs of Naga’s treatment. If you can’t make it to the fundraiser, but wish to help Drakatos with her project, a PayPal donation or email can be sent to christinedrakatos@yahoo.com, She also accepts donations of supplies and dog shelters.

Silver Addresses Parks Budget Issues On Monday, March 9, Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver testified in front of Councilman Mark Levine, Parks Chair of the New York City Council, about the preliminary Parks Department budget for the 2016 Fiscal Year. Levine shared some of his concerns about the budget and heard testimony from Silver, while other councilmembers also shared their concerns. Certain information was highlighted during the hearing. According to Silver, the millionth tree of the MillionTreesNYC program will be planted this year, two years ahead of schedule. He said that the designs for the Community Parks Initiative will be presented to community boards by June. The Parks Department held various CPI meetings to acquire community input for city parks. Silver said that 94 percent of parks projects have been completed on time this fiscal year versus 73 percent last year and that all backlogged Parks capital projects will start work by fall of this year. As far as locally, Parks testified that it will still take until Memorial Day 2017 to complete all Hurricane Sandy repair work on the boardwalk and Silver said he is seriously taking a look at keeping
beaches and pools opened past Labor Day, but it would cost $1 million a week to do so. There are currently 300 new lifeguard candidates in training for the upcoming beach season. Other issues that were addressed were the need for more stable civil service jobs to address city needs, assessment of citywide capital, more community planning and pre-design site analysis.

9 Facebook Friends You Could Do Without By Miranda Miller
Sometimes, by choice or by circumstance, we find ourselves connected online to people we try hard not to socialize with in real life. It could be a cousin, neighbor, or co-worker...someone you shouldn’t have added in the first place, but felt obligated after the sixth friend request or several reminders in person. It’s possible that you didn’t even realize what a terrible idea it would be to add them to your Facebook network; they could be one of those people who seem normal, but develop a personality disorder when their fingers hit the keyboard. Whatever the situation, you’re stuck with them now unless you’re willing to risk their wrath or worse, tears, when they realize they’ve been un-friended and blocked. Sometimes it just doesn’t seem worth it, especially with those we see often in person, so we do our best to tolerate: 1. Debbie Downer. Debbie is an unfortunate sort. She hasn’t had a good day in ten years and her wall is littered with Ugh, Why does this always happen to me. Trying to cheer up a Debbie is an exercise in

futility, as she has an entire arsenal of depressing responses ready and waiting for whichever friend makes the mistake of feeding into her negativity. The only way to deal with a Debbie is to...not deal with a Debbie. 2. Little Big Man. He’s only satisfied when he’s making someone else feel stupid and small. He mocks your typos, starts flame wars on your posts, and is always right about everything. When he’s losing an argument, you can count on this cat to Google the topic and cite a random blog post as evidence, because if someone wrote it on the Internet, it has to be true. This tactic allows Little Big Man to dominate every conversation and become an expert on any topic in 30 seconds flat. 3. Chicken Little. This friend wants you to think the sky is falling. Constantly. You regularly point them to Snopes to dispel the three or four viral disaster warnings they post a week (ie.: THE INTERNET IS CLOSING ON MARCH 4TH!). Chicken Little is especially fond of sharing catchy, scary articles/videos and the rantings and ravings of political pit bulls. This friend could

benefit from intensive counseling, a critical thinking course, and possibly medication. 4. The Super-Successful Marketer. He’s having a great time sitting at home raking in six figures and wants you to learn how! (For the low, low cost of $1,499.00.) He’s the man; he will hook you up. “For you, friend, I can work out a deal...I’ll teach you how to teach people to be rich by getting rich teaching people to be rich, too!” He avoids direct questions about how much he’s actually making, but assures the world several times a day that it’s A LOT more than you poor schmucks. At least, it will be... some day. 5. Drama Queen. She loves to post leading comments as status updates. Her post might read: OMG, can’t believe what’s happening tomorrow! Or the infinitely worse, ambiguous death/injury announcement that causes every person on her list to think it could be someone close to them: Soooo sad, my heart is broken. RIP Rob. Rob who? Rob from work? Our old classmate Rob? She loves to stir the pot and takes pleasure in making people think she has a lot more going on than she actually does. 6. The Most Interesting Person in the World. This person suffers from a condition similar to verbal diarrhea and is compelled to share every inane detail of their life with the world. They check in everywhere they go, update friends on every piece of food that passes their lips, and tell you how often they clean each room of their house. The Most Interesting Person in the World may also have a penchant for apps that allow them to share even more useless information, such as how many calories they burned in a day or what kind of mood they’re in morning, noon, and night.
7. The Guy with the Missing Filter. Similar to The Most Interesting Person in the World, they share too much, but to the point of inappropriateness. They treat Facebook as a private phone call between two very close people (one of whom probably still didn’t want to know) and either do not care or do not understand that the rest of the world may hold it against them later. The Guy with the Missing Filter considers hemorrhoids, menopausal hot flashes, foot fungus, sexual escapades, birthing stories and bodily functions light conversation topics. Ask how they’re doing or what they’ve been up to lately with caution. 8. Autopilot Andy. He missed the memo on social media and believes it’s acceptable to set up HootSuite to autopost links to everything he’s pimping online, clogging your newsfeed without engaging in any kind of human interaction whatsoever. Andy may even turn off his notifications so he doesn’t get all those pesky emails telling him people have questions or like his posts. 9. Snarky Blogger. Possibly the most nefarious and underhanded of all Facebook friends you could do without, the Snarky Blogger lies in wait, reading, observing, and collecting information for her next snarky post. You cross your fingers and hope your online ramblings don’t become fodder for her mocking diatribes about who or whatever incurred her wrath that day. Even so, you keep her around because her biting wit is actually quite funny...when it’s happening to someone else. Be on your guard and try not to slip into one of these characters. If you recognize some of your behaviors mentioned above, it may be time to rethink your social media strategy!

A Look Inside The Park Theater on 116th There have been many rumors and stories about what might happen at the old Park Theater on Beach 116th Street. The latest is that an urgent care center with retail space and maybe some residential units is in the works. It’s a long way from something real happening but we can report that workers were testing the foundation this week. We used the opportunity to step inside (and back in time, a little) this week. Still hanging from the ceiling is a huge, impressive chandelier, draped in plastic covering. If the urgent care doesn’t work out maybe a movie theater will.
Trying To Get On Our Good Side? The Mayor was spotted with a Rockaway Times (we saw him autograph one as well). Maybe he should try reading it and then would have the good sense to start a ferry service.

Like all New Yorkers, police officers want to live and work in a city on the rise. We want safe streets, fair treatment and economic security. We want to work with the public to achieve these goals for ourselves, for our families, and for every person in this city. But we can’t effectively engage with the community while short staffing leaves us racing from call to call. We can’t protect our city and ourselves from new threats without the right equipment. And we can't expect our finest police officers to meet the professional demands of 21st century policing, while still offering them below-market pay and inadequate disability protections. Our city’s economic outlook is bright, but these important public safety needs remain unfulfilled. Let’s move forward together today by giving police officers the support and resources they need to protect New York City’s tomorrow.

Over The Winter Art
Travel Time Is A Danger
A few weeks ago we asked artists what they were working on during the hibernation months. Former prez of the RAA and Captain of the Dragon Boat, Geoff Rawling, sent us these two beautiful works. (If you’d like your work in the paper, send it to mail@rockawaytimes. com. If space permits, we’ll do our best to showcase your art.)
By Michael Leboff A local nurse practitioner raised concerns over travel time from Rockaway in a presentation to Queens Community Board 14 on Tuesday Night. Rockaway resident Dennis Graham, who works at Rockaway Doctors of the World Free Clinic, believes the peninsula needs both a trauma center and a cardiac center. According to Graham, the Rockaways has the highest cardiac death rate in New York City and travel time from the area to nearby hospitals is much too long and is potentially dangerous to someone suffering from cardiac arrest or from other health issues. Of course the best fix to the problem would be to build a cardiac center on the peninsula, but Graham also suggested that ambulances can be equipped with devices that, with a push of a button, would turn red lights green on their route.

about 10 minutes. Add the wings (or giblets). Season with salt and pepper. Reduce heat to low and cover. Cook, stirring often, until the chicken has lost all traces of pink, about 30 minutes. Combine the ground beef, matzo meal, egg and 1-1/2 teaspoons of the salt in a large bowl. Pour ½ cup of cold water, mix well, forming small meatballs, approximately the size of a walnut. This makes about 3 dozen. Bring 2 cups of water to a boil and pour into the chicken mixture. Increase heat to medium-high and bring to a simmer. Add the paprika and season with salt and pepper. Mix the flour with the remaining salt and ½ teaspoon of pepper in a large bowl. Add the meatballs and roll until coated on all sides. Shake off the excess of flour. Drop the meatballs into the shimmering liquid in the casserole. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook about 2 hours. Serve with potatoes or boiled noodles. Note: I substituted homemade beef stock instead of 2 cups of boiling water. If you do not have matzo meal, use plain breadcrumbs or panko crumbs and add your seasoning.

By Sharon Feldman My mom used to make this. It was my favorite dish. She never wrote it down and I try it different ways each time. I think of her fricassee as a shidahrein (Yiddish for “shake into”) recipe, meaning that it is put together by feel, and not by strict measurement. Although this tastes nothing like hers, it’s fun to compose. So here is yet another version of my fricassee. ■ 2 tablespoons vegetable oil ■ 2 medium onions, finely chopped ■ 10 wingettes (or use giblets) ■ Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper to taste ■ 1 pound of ground beef ■ ½ cup matzo meal ■ 1 large egg ■ 2-1/2 teaspoons of kosher salt ■ 1 teaspoon sweet paprika ■ ½ cup all-purpose flour ■ ½ teaspoon ground black pepper ■ 1 teaspoon herb and garlic seasoning (consists of onion, garlic, coriander, Worcestershire sauce powder, salt, parsley, thyme, sage, cumin, black pepper and turmeric) Heat oil in a large casserole over medium heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring often, until softened,

6 Ways to Protect Yourself from Identity Theft By Peter Vossman
Marshal Stephen W. Biegel 109 W. 38th Street, Suite 200 New York, NY 10018 Office: (212) MARSHAL (627-7425) Fax: (212) 398-2000 NYC@marshalbiegel.com
Identity theft is one of the most pressing concerns of the digital age--a malicious individual with the right information could cause untold damage to your credit score, requiring you to cancel cards and freeze accounts. Luckily, there are a number of simple ways to dramatically reduce the odds of becoming a victim. Below are some of the best strategies for protecting yourself from identity fraud. Monitor Your Credit: Make use of your annual free credit checks to ensure that your credit score is accurate. If you suspect that you may be a victim of identity theft, consider placing a freeze on your credit. This prevents lenders from accessing your credit report and extending credit to a potential thief, while allowing you to temporarily lift the freeze when applying for credit yourself. Beware of Scams: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Be wary of any emails of phone calls that ask for any personal information--legitimate businesses will never ask for social security numbers or financial information over the phone or via email. Some scammers will even pretend to offer helpful services, such as credit monitoring, but don’t be fooled. Never share any personal or financial information with sources that you don’t absolutely trust.
Secure
Your
Documents:
Your passport, birth certificate, bank statements, and other information that might make it easier for a thief to assume your identity should all be kept in a secure location, such as a floor safe. When disposing of financial information, credit cards, or paperwork from the bank, be sure to shred it first to ensure that the contents of your trash can don’t become the ticket to someone else’s financial gain.
Boost Your Online Security:
www.NewYorkCityMarshal.com
Make sure that your online security is up to snuff in order to prevent
unscrupulous activity. Use a strong password for any sites that provide access to your finances, and never use the same password anywhere else. Many banking websites offer secondary verification, where a code delivered via text or phone call must be entered before accessing your account. This ensures that even if someone does get ahold of sensitive information, they won’t be able to use it.
Keep an Eye on Your Accounts: Always check your credit
and debit card billing statements carefully to confirm that there is no suspicious activity. Keep in mind that instead of large single purchases, some thieves make smaller, inconspicuous purchases over time in order to avoid detection. Some thieves will go so far as to change your billing address, so always ensure that the information on your statements is accurate and up to date. If possible, it may be wise to set up account alerts that send you a text or email whenever money is withdrawn or large purchases are made. React Quickly: If your wallet is lost, or if you notice suspicious activity on your credit report or account statements, it is crucial that you to respond as quickly as possible. Immediately call and cancel your cards, notify your creditors, and change any passwords associated with your bank account. Time is of the essence, and reacting right away could mean the difference between mild inconvenience and a ruined credit score. If identity theft isn’t caught in time, the damage it can cause is often irreversible. The best way to prevent becoming a victim of fraud is to take strong preventative measures to ensure that there are no weak links that make you an attractive target. The strategies above are the perfect place to start for anyone who is concerned about maintaining their privacy and financial security.

Inclusive? Sanitation Gets Scrapped from Parade By Katie McFadden
Last year, Mayor de Blasio says he skipped out on the Rockaway St. Paddy’s Day Parade, mistakenly claiming that it wasn’t “inclusive.” De Blasio showed up this year, albeit late and halfway through the parade route, but there was one group that was notably missing this year; New York’s Strongest. The Department of Sanitation was instrumental in cleaning up the mess that Sandy left behind, spending months collecting the trashed, flooded contents of people’s homes. Sanitation has spent weeks clearing out the snow left by many snowstorms in this brutally cold winter. In the days leading up to the parade, with another six to eight inches of snow covering the ground on Thursday, Sanitation worked around the clock to ensure that the parade route was completely clear in time for Saturday. However despite their hard work, Sanitation was not allowed to take a break for Rockaway’s biggest party. Although parade organizers said they were scheduled to appear, the Sanitation Department, including the DSNY Emerald Society Pipes and Drums Band, didn’t get to march this
year, breaking a long-time annual tradition, much to the dismay of local Sanitation employees and band members who were looking forward to the event. The only City sanitation worker on the parade route was Jimmy McGoorty, who was one of the Deputy Grand Marshals this year. The sanitation workers who were supposed to have off and march in the parade were called in to work and all leaves were denied for the day. According to DSNY, it wasn’t some conspiracy against the Irish or the parade. The snow was to blame. “Saturday was a mandatory snow clearing and backlogged trash and recycling collection day because of three separate storms in one week. Consequently, all DSNY sanitation workers and officers were required to be at work,” DSNY spokesman Vito Turso said. Sanitation and its pipe band also had to miss out on the Staten Island parade on Sunday, March 1. In addition to his skipping out on the Belle Harbor crowd and showing up late, de Blasio came in for more criticism because he was wearing a green DSNY jacket. It isn’t clear if de Blasio wore the jacket as a way to show his spirit with an outer layer of
green while marching on the chilly day, but some locals and Sanitation workers took it as a slap in the face. De Blasio even stopped uniformed sanitation workers who were working on the sidelines, so that he could get a photo op with them. De Blasio is catching plenty of flak from angry residents over his tardiness, but he wasn’t in charge of the decision to pull Sanitation from the parade. According to Turso, “it was ordered by our First Deputy Commissioner Dennis Diggins, an occasional bagpiper in the award winning DSNY Emerald Society Pipes and Drums. “It was a difficult decision, but the City’s best interests came first, as they should always. The department and the band are looking forward to next year’s Rockaway St. Patrick’s parade…weather permitting,” Turso said. The next parade scheduled for DSNY Emerald Society Pipes and Drums is the New York City parade on St. Patrick’s Day, to which one employee said, “We will be there rain, snow, shine, or end of the world!”
Surfers Sought For Film We scour the internet so you don’t have to. You never know what you’ll find. One of our intrepid reporters jumped into Craigslist, the online classifieds and came across this post: Seeking Surfers for Documentary (Rockaway). It seems a young fellow named Tom who’s done a lot of skateboarding became fascinated with Rockaway surfers who get in the water in the dead of winter. He started filming and was pleased enough with the results that he believes a full documentary is warranted. If you live in Rockaway, surf in the winter, maybe you’ll help him out. You can contact him through Craigslist. We search for you but don’t connect! Oh, one last thing, there is no pay.

The Army Corps of Engineers has cancelled public meetings recently but are now scheduled to meet briefly with the Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers during a Jamaica Bay Task Force meeting on Thursday, March 19. The meeting, which will take place at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center in Broad Channel (175-01 Cross Bay Boulevard) is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. On the agenda, Don Riepe will speak about habitat maintenance at the Wildlife Refuge on behalf of the American Littoral Society. Dan Mundy Jr. will present the stakeholder co-chair report for the Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay. Keith Mahoney, Chief of Regulatory Planning for NYCDEP, will give an update on the Biological Nitrogen Removal
Program. The meeting will finish with an update on Sunset Cove by Elisabeth Jordan, Ecological Restoration Manager for the Parks Department. At approximately 7:45 p.m., Dan Falt of the Army Corps of Engineers is scheduled to speak about preliminary Jamaica Bay alternative formulation. They are expected to introduce some radical or dramatic possibilities for the public to consider for Jamaica Bay, one of which is a massive gate from Rockaway to Brooklyn that would hold back floodwaters. The Army Corps was scheduled to make a presentation at the February Community Board 14 meeting, but the agency cancelled and never rescheduled.

car accident at Beach 74th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. The cards all seemed to have activation stickers.
NY1 Shines Light On Dark By Michael Leboff
Where there was once darkness, there is now light. After months of frustration Far Rockaway residents can breathe a sigh of relief after a stretch of lights along Seagirt Avenue are finally back on. The lights had been down after a fuse blew, leaving residents worried about their safety along the 10 block stretch in the eastern part
of the peninsula. Residents were using cell phones and flashlights just to see where they were going. And given the icy conditions of the sidewalks this winter, that is a recipe for disaster. Residents had claimed they had called 311 numerous times but it wasn’t until NY1 News called that the DOT got around to fixing the problem this week.

Spring Cleaning! By Helen Kilgallen Spring is in the air, even if it’s still snowing, we now have longer days and know there is light at the end of this dark winter. Our evenings will be longer with more light. Safe to say we are all looking forward to some nice weather. So while we patiently wait for the spring flowers to bud and sunshine to warm our bodies, why not start getting rid of the things you just don’t need anymore. Start shedding layers perhaps from the outside to the inside. We tend to collect and store without really using so many of our clothes. For many, certain items have sentimental value. I, for one, have so much trouble getting rid of something that I may not be using but holds a loving memory for me. For example, when I began my spring cleaning with my wardrobe I opened my t-shirt drawer and could only take two shirts out. All the rest I am attached to as they really mean something special to me. Sounds crazy but these shirts make me happy when I look at them. A flood of memories come back to me. I may not use them but I cannot give them away. Some of the great ones I tuck away: The John Timlin Foundation shirt, Richie Allen, Steve Belson, Steve Killian, 1991 New York City Triathlon, John Edwards running races, H2O Standup Paddleboard and last but not least, the Rockaway Times neon orange shirt!! I simply cannot part with them because they all HOT & FRESH MAKES US BEST!
represent someone or something that means a lot to me. I think it’s OK that they take up an entire drawer even if I haven’t worn them all year. Many of my t-shirts have been donated, but the sentimental ones stay in the draw. The rule of thumb being, if you haven’t used something in one year, it is time to get rid of it. This does not apply to my t-shirt drawer! However, I will go back again to clean out my closets with the intention of donating three more bags of clothes to someone who can use them. Declutter!! Springtime is also a perfect time to cleanse your body and mind, mindfully eating less sugar and more vegetables and fruit. Perhaps you could kick start your healthy eating with a juice cleanse for a day. Local Liquids on 116th offers this in their beautiful new juice store. It may help you start a mindful practice of eating. When you start to eat better, you will begin to clear your mind. Your thoughts may be clearer with the space you create in your body and mind. Springtime is a time of renewal. Set your goals and work towards creating space in home, body and mind. We are what we eat, we are what we think and we become what we believe in. May you all find the time to rid yourselves of unwanted clutter inside and outside. Question/comment: Email us at BeWellBeHappy2@gmail.com CALL AHEAD FOR FAST TAKE OUT

Swap for a Cause! By Katie McFadden Have your kids outgrown their clothes and need some new ones? Participate in Swap for a Cause! Rockaway resident Alison Kase is holding a clothes swapping event to benefit Family-to-Family, a nonprofit group that helps the needy, including those who needed help following Hurricane Sandy. Family-to-Family is a hunger and poverty relief organization that is dedicated to easing the burden of poverty for American families in need. The idea behind the swap is to swap clothing, and then “shop” for clothing that others donated. “Primarily, it is a fund raiser for Family-to-Family, and they have been very successful in Northern Suburbs of NYC. We find two very positive side benefits, it’s a great community event, and in the end it is a great savings for families that shop,” organizer Alison Kase said. Being that this is the first swap, only children’s clothing will be collected. If successful, there may be future swaps including other items. All are welcome to drop off a bag of clean, lightly worn boys
and girls clothing and shoes. You can donate everything from pants, shirts, shorts, skirts, dresses, belts, sweaters, jackets, boots, shoes, sandals and more. The only items that are discouraged are underwear and bathing suits, unless they are brand new and have tags. The second part of the event is an opportunity to go shopping. Guests will be able to fill a bag with clothing items. For those who swapped clothes, a bag costs $20. Those who didn’t swap can fill a bag for $30. Those interested can start dropping off clothes from March 18 to March 25 at Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder’s office at 214 Beach 96th Street in Rockaway or 734 Church Road in Broad Channel. If no one is home, be sure to write your name and email address on the bag. The big swap and shop event will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 29 at the Knights of Columbus. If you’d like more info or want to volunteer during the event, email Kase at akase@familyto-family.org.

ROCKAWAY GLIDERS
By John Sica Sports and games. What does it all mean in the big picture of life? In 2006 I asked my kids to buy me a set of poker chips and started a monthly game with my sons, brothers, brother in laws and their sons. Soon I included neighbors, coworkers and other friends, and some of them introduced their family members and friends to the game. Since I’ve been working a lot this year the games have dwindled to once every two months and my lovely wife Rita asked me why I still do it. I was pondering the future of the game in January when my brother Teddy passed away after a long battle with cancer. He was a great man, and the wake was packed, but so many times one of my friends would show up and I would be a little surprised thinking, “that was nice of him to show up” thinking
that the individual didn’t really know Teddy. Then it would occur to me, “Oh yeah he knows Teddy well from the poker game.” The Poker game. I have made so many friends from that game. With our busy lives how many less times would I have seen my brothers and nephews without that game? How many of my friends would not have ever met Teddy without that game? The game will continue, and I will meet many more great people. And so it is with volleyball. Wednesday nights are magical at Riis Park. Over 700 players converge from 6-9 p.m. and beyond. There are current high school kids playing with their friends, and men and women who were high school classmates in the 1970’s now playing with their old buddies. There

Saturdays beginning April 11th – Saturday – May 30th (8 Saturdays) are spouses playing with their kids, cops and fireman playing with their old or current partners in the station house and firehouses. Teachers running into old students, doctors and patients. Old friends and new friends that you might only see at a wedding or funeral on the beach together on Wednesday nights for eleven great weeks in the summer. If you have never seen the RBVL in action it is a sight to see. Thirty seven matches going on simultaneously, nine divisions from beginners to experts. Some nights are cold, rainy and windy and the games go on. Some nights are perfectly still with sunsets and full moons. Children too young to play yet, practice their skills or do what kids do, run around and cause mischief. Everyone likes to win, but even in losing there is comradery, sportsmanship, and laughs. In the end though, like the monthly poker game, we all win. The opportunity to see so many friends, old and new, that you might go summer after summer without ever seeing is priceless. Seventy-Four teams. That’s a lot of legs. And a lot of beer. And a lot of bumps, sets and spikes. It takes a lot of balls to run a volley-
ball league of that size. But that is just what the members of the committee that run the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League are ready to embark on once again. If you are lucky enough to be on one of those 74 teams make sure your captain, or a representative, will be attending the one and only meeting complete with your roster, and a check for the entire $750 on Wednesday March 25 at Jameson’s Pub at 421 Beach 129th St. at 730 p.m. Roster forms are available on the rbvl.com website, along with uniform order forms which must also be turned in at the meeting. Your entry fee includes 10 uniform shirts. Additional shirts can be purchased for $10 each. Even if you are not a captain, or in the league for that matter, come on in and see your neighbors and friends as we thaw out from the long winter. I have written about what the league means to the community before and I am going to write a little bit more about it now. May 20th, will be the practice night and the 27th will be opening day for competition. League play will continue on Wednesday nights until August 5th with the playoffs being held on Saturday August 8th. For more information check RBVL.com.

Ignorance is 9/10ths Of The Problem For the past 40 years, tradition holds that the first Saturday in March, is a day for Rockaway Beach. Family, friends, and neighbors gather to celebrate the culture and history of the Irish people as the second largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York passes by. Thousands descend on the neighborhood in search of contagious smiles, brute camaraderie, and though not mandatory, an opportunity to throw a jab at a deserving tardy Mayor. That’s if he shows up at all. The above paragraph paints a pretty picture, the column could
end right there and any unfamiliar visitor to the Rockaway Times would say, “wow, seems like such a quaint day.” But as any seasoned veteran will tell you, the day is in its infancy, as the festivities are just starting to heat up at your local watering holes. Perhaps I should have written this column last week to let it serve as a guide, similar to Beefchip’s “Rules of the Road on Mustache Bash.” Cause what I witnessed and what I have heard from colleagues about this past parade day almost left me speechless. Luckily, Boyle has given local industry a platform to vent.

I’m looking at you “Mister/Misses College kid that brought his/her roommates home from college for the weekend.” This is a marathon type of day. The fact that your friend couldn’t make it past the 5k mark is not our fault. You should have warned them, this is not your average fraternity mixer. You’re beat, go home and put these kids to sleep. I’m looking at you “Mister I live in Bensonhurst/Howard Beach tough guy.” This is supposed to be a fun day. You not being able to handle your alcohol/that kid just looked at me the wrong way motif are getting tired. Stop on your way home at L&B /New Park respectively, grab a slice and pump your breaks. I’m looking at you “Mister/Misses Entitled Local who thinks last call doesn’t apply to them.” There’s a method to the madness, genius. You have been boozing all day and we are closing. If you wanted to come into the establishments you wished to gain entry to, try starting there a little earlier next year. The fact that you know so and so is erroneous on all levels on this day. I’m looking at you “Mister/Misses Scream at the Bouncer if I don’t get my way.” Back up just one second. Bouncers are put in place for a reason, to weed out any persons deemed to be over served, as mandated by the State Liquor Authority. On this day, that is the majority. Your logic insists that you raise your voice. This does not help your case in the least, in fact, you already lost. You are the Rudy at the beginning of the movie that gets abused by his older brother. The bouncer
is the Rudy at the end of the movie getting carried off the field. Some brainiacs think it smart to go for the physical challenge. This is not Nickelodeon and we are not playing Double Dare. There are more of them than there are of you and they are twice the size of most of you. Again, see Rudy. I’m looking at you “Mister/Misses it takes me forever to get my cash out of my wallet/murse/purse.” You are in direct violation of Rule 1, section 2.18 of human etiquette. There is really not much else to say. With the fire of a thousand suns, please stay home. That goes for you too “Mister I feel the need to wear a Celtics jersey every year.” Beefchip calls on all “professional drinkers” of the neighborhood. Educate your fellow parade attendees, and if you have kids, give them a tutorial. Similar to a “Pay it Forward” campaign, if you spread this article to three of your friends and they do the same, we are geared up for major changes in parade day protocol for generations to come. As it is, Beefchip is hanging up the “looking at you” jersey, for now. In all seriousness, for some of the ugliness this day produces, it is a tradition like no other that brings out the best in the neighborhood. After all is said and done, with Sunday morning jitters, I hold my head high knowing I am a product of such a town, and I know you do too.
