Local Musician Revs Up His Bike for Popp Over America Tour By Kami-Leigh Agard

Far Rockaway resident, Joe Popp, an acoustic guitar musician, avid motorcyclist, and self-professed techie, is revving up for his 48-state Popp Over America tour. This renaissance man on his motorcycle, armed with his guitar, a few GoPro cameras, a digital recorder, and microphones, will ride cross-country to the backwoods of the USA just to play music, meet new people and broadcast it all in a web series. The Rockaway Times (RT) met with Popp at Rockaway Roasters, to find out why he decided to take on this project and share his zen, performing and meeting folks from the salt of the earth. RT: First off, what brought you to Rockaway? Popp: I was originally struggling with editing the video for

and was able to finish the pilot within a month and a half, after struggling for two years to get it done. So the Popp Over America pilot was officially finished in Far Rockaway! RT: Where are you originally from? Popp: I was born in New Jersey, then moved to Florida in 1977 with my parents when I was 12. I moved to NYC in 2000.

the Popp Over America pilot, when I first toured in New Jersey. Where I lived in the City, I couldn’t get any peace and quiet to focus. So I saw this ad for this apartment on Beach 24th Street in Far Rockaway, and something in my heart nudged me. This is where I need to be, with the bonus of being near the beach! I have been here since November,

For the last 15 years, I have been working at City College of NY in Manhattan as the technical director of their sound recording program, and I teach the course, Rock Ensembles as an adjunct professor. I love my job! Every six years I get a sabbatical, which gave me the opportunity to do this trip. RT: What inspired you to do this trip? Popp: Trying to find a way to heal myself from a broken wedding engagement, I found this book, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig. It’s a story about a father who rides a motorcycle through the American Central Plains with his 11-year-old son. I have been a motorcyclist my whole life, so I bought a bike in 2012 and did a cross-country trip. But after a month without my gui-

tar, it felt like being without an appendage. Then I thought: What if I did a tour across the U.S., riding my bike and armed with my guitar? So October 2014 is when I started developing the whole idea of the trip. Of course, I had to think ahead about the challenges. My acoustic guitar is enormous! I worked with a case maker named Jeff Hoffee, of Hoffee Carbon Fiber Cases, who designed the case for me, and I figured out a way to mount it. And now it’s just a wonderful setup. It’s waterproof, bulletproof, it’s everything-proof. Where my left saddle back is, it just latches on. RT: What states will you be traveling to? Popp: I will be going to all mainland 48 states. Fifteen thousand miles. I have it all mapped out on my website: joepopp.net/poppoveramerica RT: What about accommodations? Popp: I can’t afford a hotel room every night, so I sort of chained the stopping points together with as many friends as I can. Even some strangers have come forward and said, “Hey man! I saw your show online and if you need anything, I have a garage you can park your motorcycle, or a bed you can crash in.” One motorcycle camp even offered a site, where I can park and sleep. So it’s just this beautiful kindness of strangers that’s happened. It’s really just been this fabulous journey so far, and I haven’t even started yet. I begin in May. Amidst all the logistical planning, I have to remember to practice and get my bike in shape. RT: How have you been able to fund this tour? Popp: I have been really lucky with the support I have been receiving, including from sponsors. I originally launched a Kickstarter campaign just for the pilot episode, and was able to raise $8K to hire a professional cinematographer, audio guy and two assistants. I just really wanted the pilot to look amazing. For this upcoming tour in May, I can’t afford to pay that kind of money, so I have a Go Fund Me campaign just to help me with the basics of food, gas and some accom-

THURSDAY, MARCH 16, 2017 modations, when needed. I am just going on my own with a couple of Go-Pros, and I’ll get a local to be the cameraman. I am a tech guy. So all this stuff is what I do. So I combine the tech with the mechanic, with the musician, and put it all together, and hopefully I’ll make a watchable product. RT: What sort of destinations do you plan to hit? Popp: My agenda is to go play at the fried-chicken place, where all the guys eat, for the local mechanic in a garage, and even a couple of state parks, just for the beauty of it. I am more about riding to the small towns with the gears that make America turn. I want to ride on the roads less travelled. RT: What is your ultimate goal with this tour? Popp: My ultimate goal is just meeting and playing music for new people. Rockaway is amazing for that. Within a day of moving into my apartment here, a neighbor knocked on my door and said, “Hey, I just saw you moved in, just wanted to say, Hi.” Then another neighbor came over, and now we are all friends, and they are artists too. It’s really a magical place out here. RT: Have you performed in Rockaway locally? Popp: I have performed at the Rockaway Brewing Company (RBC) in Arverne on Open Mic nights. It’s fun playing there, seeing folks having a great time. RBC will be hosting the Popp Over America Tour’s launch release party and screening on Wednesday, March 22, 8 p.m. RT: What is your genre of music and musical inspirations? Popp: I have a punk background, however, my music is more like acoustic rock. Think of the band, Tenacious D. My musical inspirations are classic rock like Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix. Even though I play acoustic, my music is still very much rockbased, like Pete Townshend. I just feel that it’s now or never. Follow Popp Over America trip on poppoveramerica.com and support his Go Find Me Campaign at gofundme.com/ poppoveramerica.

Supermarket Sickness I write this column because I’m cheap and my preferred neighborhood shrinks don’t take my insurance. I figure most of you read Boyleing Points while imagining me lying down on a sofa while I drone about some neurosis or another. Wait, do people still lie down in psychiatric offices? I’m kinda ignorant in that regard since the only model I have for the patient-psychiatrist dynamic is what I got from Admiral Bellows, the psychia-

trist on I Dream Of Jeannie. But now that I think about it, Tony Soprano and others I’ve seen, sit directly across from a therapist. Yeah, that’d be better, I guess. Lying down looking at the ceiling and talking, while somebody sits in an easy chair nearby, is definitely weird, but it does have the advantage of avoiding eye contact. Which is a big deal. It’s like when you’re in Stop and Shop. You’d rather not have eye contact with someone

while you’re deciding whether or not you should grab that tub of ice cream from the freezer. You don’t want to be saying, it’s for the kids. They love this damn stuff. You want everyone looking at the ceiling when your shopping cart is overflowing with potato chips and Fudgetown cookies. Supermarkets should rent carts that are clearly marked This Stuff Is Not For Me. And they could charge a premium for carts that also say: Swear To God. It’s not just the stuff you’re buying that makes the whole Supermarket thing a nightmare. I’ve sat in my car for long stretches trying to brace myself. I want to go in, get my stuff, and get out. But it never happens. You know what happens? You see someone on Aisle 1 who you know by face. You smile, nod, maybe even say hello. What do you do when you see them again on Aisle 2? You give them maybe a quick smile and a hey, we meet again, look. But you’re thinking, I’m skipping Aisle 3

Page 5 because I don’t want to have to do this again. And you’re hoping they don’t have the same idea and you both end up together again on Aisle 4. I’ve started down aisles and practically knocked over the cart, spinning it around for an escape if I’ve seen someone I’m trying to avoid. It’s not much better running into good friends. I really don’t want to glance in their cart and see something that will alter my view of them. Why do they have all those prunes? Are those diapers? And I don’t want them looking at my cart. I don’t want to feel like I have to defend the fact that I’m a grown man who likes Cap’n Crunch. I’m twisted about this stuff and I really should seek help, but I can’t seek help because I don’t have the time. I’m too busy dreading getting behind somebody on the checkout line that I might have to make small talk with. I just want you to know – it’s okay if you look up at the ceiling if you see me shopping.

Houses Collapse Amid Snowstorm Photo and story by Katie McFadden

The “blizzard” on Tuesday turned out to be pretty underwhelming compared to meteorologists forecasts, but it may have been powerful enough to knock down a few homes that were being built in Far Rockaway. On the morning of Tuesday, March 14, two houses, about two to three stories high, collapsed at the corner of Jarvis Avenue and Beach 7th Street. The Rockaway Nassau Safety Patrol was among the first to respond to the scene, followed by the FDNY and representatives from the NYC Department of Buildings. As the homes were under construction, no one

was living in them and no crews were working on the homes during the storm. The cause of the collapse is still under investigation, but it came as heavy snow and sleet accumulated during the storm. A neighbor said a huge gush of wind occurred right before the collapse. A sign on the construction site said the buildings were part of a project including 10 luxury residential homes being constructed by the Jarvis Association, based in Valley Stream. The sign said the anticipated completion for the project was summer 2015. It is not clear how long the structure was sitting idle.

***** Republican candidates for mayor are starting to make the move towards a City Hall run. At a recent forum, four candidates: Darren Aquino, Michel Faulkner, Paul Massey and Eric Ulrich outlined their views. Ulrich has not declared but will decide one way or the other soon. We guess each of these candidates holds out hope that Mayor de Blasio will be indicted for illegal fundraising or corruption. The same might be true of wouldbe Democrats. ***** The question is, does the firing of US Attorney Preet Bharara mean the investigation of the de Blasio administration is over? Just a couple of weeks ago, the Mayor had been grilled about pay-to-play campaign activities by Bharara’s office. There is much uncertainty with a new US Attorney to be named. ***** Preet delivered a nice zinger on Twitter, managing to take a dig at both President Trump

and Governor Cuomo. He tweeted, “By the way, now I know what the Moreland Commission must have felt like.” Cuomo created the Moreland Commission to investigate public corruption, and then interfered with it, and then closed it down (making many wonder if he closed it down to protect himself ). Allegedly, Trump had promised Bharara that he’d keep his job soon after the November election. Like Cuomo, Trump suddenly put a stop to that making many wonder if Preet was looking at the President. Palace intrigue, palace intrigue. ***** You may consider yourself to be a nice person, but according to a new study you’re probably not as nice as you think. Psychologists from Goldsmiths, University of London have discovered that 98 percent of people think they’re part of the nicest 50 percent of the population. Hmmm... And we think 98 percent of our readers are nice!

Irishtown History

By Emil R. Lucev, Sr. & his daughter Katie Lucev

Please join me in taking a trip back in time to read about the History of Rockaway’s Irishtown, USA. At the end of the American Revolution, Bayles, Carpenter, Smith, Wiggins, Wilson, Bettes, Evert, Higbie, Henderson, Innis and Mills were all examples of Irish names found in local militia organized in Hempstead town, of which the Rockaways were part of and known as Near Rockaway (Oceanside) and Far Rockaway. The names Near and Far came from their proximity to Hempstead. At the outbreak of the American Revolution, the point of the Rockaway Peninsula was then located just west of old Beach 88th Street. The long sandbar that formed west of this old point became the Seaside section of the Rockaway peninsula, around the time the Constitution of the Unit-

ed States was ratified. It was a wild and wooly stretch of sand dunes covered with cedar trees. During the War of 1812, a blockhouse was built at the point of our peninsula (approx. Beach 137th Street), and manned round-theclock by the Military of NYC. Some of the (Irish) men’s last names who served at Fort Decatur are Finnegan, Craig, Gale, McGuire, McGowan, Smith and Sweeny. In the mid-19th century, during the great Irish immigration to the USA, some immigrants settled in Far Rockaway. Early maps and writings from that time list names from “The Sons of Erin,” in Far Rockaway. They are: Caffrey, Mulry, McCarty, McCarthy, Moran, Finnucan, Norton, Kelly the sheriff, Kelly the mason, Harper, Conway, Bell, McManus, Horton, Wynn, Reilly, Healy, McKelvy, Horan, Mulhearn, Shilling, Craig, Mimnaugh, Skelly, McTigue, Jones, Murray, Hughes, Hickey, Fitzpatrick, Prendergast, Gunning, Allen, Clark, Clake, Cleary, Curtis, Darcy, Deragh, Donohue, Flynn, Grifan and McCabe. They

all contributed to developing the area by the late 1850s. The residential area became known as The Irish Saratoga! The Seaside section began to grow as a summer resort after the Civil War. Many hotels and bathhouses were built with watering holes. Restaurants were also constructed for the tourists seeking relief at the seashore from the hot inner city. Apparently, things were not as cool in Seaside as thought. In 1876, Mr. Acton E. Kelly published the first newspaper in Rockaway in an effort to establish law and order. We also learned that Ellen Kelly ran a den of iniquity in Seaside, where persons of questionable character “hung-out.” It is not known if the Kelly’s mentioned were related in any way. At times, places like these were wrecked and closed down by respected locals. Law and order was not established until many years later when a solid Police Force was established. By 1881, there were 48 bars in Seaside. MOST were operated by Irish owners.

A local map dated in 1886 revealed the following Irish surnames in the Seaside area: O’Brien, Ennis, Norton, Waters, Smith, Harrison, Magerus, Welch, Walsh, Emmet, Boyle, McDevitt, Phalen, Murray, Valentine, Curley, McLain, Morrison, Reynolds, Farrell, Sheeran, Fannagen, Hepburn, Coghlan, Griffing, Ryan, Muir, Donnelly, Freil, Horan and Brosnan. Tragedy struck during the cold season in 1892 when the entire Seaside section from Beach 102nd Street to Beach 106th Street (ocean to bay) burned

Continued from Page 10 to the ground. Before the ashes cooled, proprietors began to rebuild new and larger establishments. New land developers purchased land and built new hotels and amusements. The rest of the peninsula also experienced a building-boom. At the turn of the century, Seaside (old Irishtown), uncovered the surnames: Healys, Barnes, Mulhearn, Tiernan, Curley, McIntosh, Murray, Waters, Morrison, Shilling, McKeon, Finan, McVey, Kavanagh, Flynn, McCaffrey, Harper, Garrison, Candee, Allen, Gilmore and Darde. In 1909, the Irish Catholic population of Seaside was growing. The strong desire to build their own house of worship was eminent. Today it is known as St. Camillus Roman Catholic Church. This parish was once known as the wealthiest on the peninsula. St. Camillus was originally a mission of St. Rose of Lima, as were the other churches in the Rockaways. In 1910, Tent City in Seaside slowly gave way to the construction of wooden bungalows by Mr. John Egan. Some of these structures still stand today amid Dayton Towers West and around Beach 101st Street. The old Fitzgerald’s building was once the only pavilion in Tent City. It served as a restaurant, bar, bowling alley, dance hall, meeting place, etc. for renters at Tent City. Egan was followed by many other land developers in the bungalow-building business from about Beach 40th Street to 109th Street. In 1918, many Irish young men from Rockaway were drafted into the military to fight World War I. Colonel J. J. Byrne of Far Rockaway, commanded our 24th Company Field Artillery. The war had ended and peacetime brought on the ‘Roaring 20’s’. Cross Bay Boulevard was built and visitors now had a short trip to enjoy the many ‘spots’ that were illegal during Prohibition, when the Volstead Act of 1919 was repealed (1933). You can read the LONG list of bars in The Rockaway Times' celebrated issue that was dedicated to all 680+ bars/pubs that existed in Rockaway since the 1850’s. Here’s a link: scribd. com/document/325778733/

THURSDAY, MARCH 16, 2017 Rockaway-Times-9-29-16 Here’s some interesting Irish News and Facts: 1920 – The Friends of Irish Freedom formed in Far Rockaway. 1921 – The American Association for the Recognition of the Irish Republic, famed in Rockaway Beach, met in Pachinger’s Hall on Beach 85th Street. James Meehan of Far Rockaway befriended a young gentleman in need, and in return became one of the principle stockholders of the Singer Sewing Machine Company in America. Patrick Connors was the head of the U.S. Longshoremen’s Union. He lived in Seaside. Thomas Flynn lived in the same area and was president of Local 12, Industrial Union Marine and Shipbuilding Workers of America. The Harbor Light Restaurant, was first Mrs. Dolan’s Inn, then Pete’s Place, and after that was The Newport Inn. J.A. Bradley, a veteran of the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg, lived in Seaside. After WWII, Seaside was nicknamed “Rockaway Irishtown USA.” Irishtown was flourishing on a rebirth. The war was over, loved ones were returning home, and everyone was out to have a good time. More bars, restaurants, hotels and concessions along the beach were built. It was said that the construction of Dayton Towers West was what finally destroyed the greater part of Irishtown. The main reason for the downfall of Seaside (Rockaway Irishtown USA) was that many concessionaires in the area refused to contribute part of their huge profits towards the area's promotion of Seaside through radio, newspapers, firework displays and special events. This became a trickle-down effect for others to drop out of the areas promotions. Then came the Glorious 1950’s. Playland was the main attraction for the amusement-minded crowd. Irishtown’s ‘thrills’ began to dwindle down to a scant few near the Irish Circle on Beach 102nd Street. It’s fair to say that many Irish settlers took a huge part in building much of the Rockaways. We give thanks and much gratitude for the investments and sacrifices they made. “Go raibh maith agat.”

Poseidon Prom 2017: Ship of Fools By Bert Sanders

After a well-deserved hibernation, The Rockaway Mermaid Brigade (RMB) has awoken just in time for “Poseidon's Prom, Ship of Fools” on April Fool’s Day, Saturday, April 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus on Beach 90th Street! This yearly fundraiser for Poseidon's Parade is a celebration of local art, music, business, community, and all things mermaid. The event helps make the parade a true spectacle! I met up with Casey Brouder and Alex Cannon, the Queen mermaids, for an exclusive Rockaway Times interview. In full mermaid glitter and garb, they gave me the low down on the throw down. “This is a celebration of the creative community of Rockaway Beach,” they explained in unison. “We want people to come in costume and celebrate our wonderful local businesses and artists.” DJ Paddy Tubz will be rocking the event, which is hosted

by The Knights of Columbus. “After last year’s intense dancing, we have been advised to expand the dance floor,” Brouder explained. “There are also rumors of special musical performances by members of Indabumpkin, the official band of the RMB.” In addition to music and dancing, the event turns the hall into a massive local art gallery. Geoff Rawling aka “El Capitan,” will have many fea-

tured pieces for the event. After his kidnapping by Mexican art thugs in the mystical mountains of Chiapas, Mexico, Rawling is in a posh induced creative groove. He refused to be interviewed, due to his trancelike creative state. Rawling will add to a trove of local art that will be on display and on sale! Local businesses have generously donated to the event. At the time of press, Healy’s, Zingara Vintage, Whit’s End, Vinnyasa Yoga, Glorified Tomato, PaintParty NYC, Bungalow Bar, Crom Fitness, Burn Fitness, Connolly’s, The Wharf, Healy’s, Thai Rock, End of the A, Pico, JKS Print Shop, and Hawk Eye Photography have all generously donated prizes for the silent auction. Alex Cannon, the webmaster, ticketmaster, and graphics master stated: “It’s great to see so many businesses in the neighborhood contributing to the parade.” Coney Island Brewing Company has also

generously donated beer! Additionally, John Cori has been selling raffles for a large piece of art that is currently on display at Rockaway Roasters. And of course, The Rockaway Times offers prime editorial space! The event is capped off when DJ Paddy Tubz announces the prom king and queen, who lead the parade in September. Last year’s king and queen, Jerry Rea and Vinchenzo Bonnano, will have to pass their crowns to this year’s winners. Hopefully it will be a peaceful transfer of power! Tickets are available online at poseidonsprom2017. brownpapertickets.com and at the door. The $40 ticket includes open bar and appetizers, in addition to a wild night of art, music, prizes, dances, and a Mermaid Brigade slideshow! Let the games begin! The 3rd Annual Poseidon’s Parade will take place on the boardwalk sometime in September.

Thumbs Up for Crockpots Rust Already?

Dear Editor: As I start my annual lose weight walks along the "board"walk, I sadly notice that the new benches between Beach 116th Street and Beach 117th Street are already starting to rust. While I feel that much of the oceanfront project was well-constructed, it appears that the quality of the metal bench frames are not well-suited for exposure to salty sea air and wind blown sand. Hopefully this is just a bad batch of frames, and is not indicative of additional problems. Rust stains on our new promenade or wet paint signs, for what should have been unnecessary maintenance, seems

Dear Editor: I really appreciate how lately you've been posting crock-pot recipes in your "Recipe Swap" section. I was recently gifted a crock-pot for Christmas and I find it to be such a blessing. As a full time realtor, mom and wife, it's such a convenience for me to set up my crock-pot after I've put my son to bed and have it cooking during the night so that in the morning my dinners are ready for that evening. If I'm showing homes later than usual or meeting new clients or dealing with a fussy son, it's one less thing on my mind to do and I know that when my husband is ready to eat, dinner is done. Thank you. Melissa "Missy" Torres-Echevarria

Edgemere Farm is On the Edge of A New Beginning By Kami-Leigh Agard

Imagine a private outdoor dinner with friends and family on a beautiful, warm Rockaway summer night in the rustic setting of a farm, being able to gaze up at the starry sky, faces caressed by a gentle breeze from the ocean, and tantalized with a multiple course menu of sumptuous food and drinks, all created from locally-grown and -sourced ingredients. All this and more, can be yours at Edgemere Farm, which could use a little help from the community. Edgemere Farm is a halfacre urban farm located in the beachside community on Beach 44th Street. In 2013 its founders transformed an underutilized lot on Beach 45th Street into a lush and productive space, where a wide variety of fresh and locally grown vegetables, flowers and herbs are cultivated. Bees, chickens and many varieties of pollinators also make the farm their home.

The team behind the Farm has recently launched a Kickstarter campaign in hopes of making improvements to this beloved community resource. According to Heidi Woolever, former sheep farmer, educator,

Edgemere Farm grower and founder of Rockaway Herbs, the Kickstarter campaign initiative was spearheaded by chefs and Beach 97th Street Citysticks concessionaires, Justin Harter and Matt Blance.

“The Farm collaborated with Justin and Matt last summer. On our Saturday morning farm stand, they hosted a breakfast, coined the Cowboy Corral. It was this mouthwatering offering of farm-fresh Belgian waffles, an all-organic egg hash featuring bread from a local baker, a bevy of smoothies and a green drink to boot. It was such a hit,” Woolever exclaimed. “Then Justin and Matt also started hosting dinners with more amazing food and a theater performance. We loved collaborating with them. So, at the end of the season last year, we talked about working together again for 2017. However, to continue the same menu of activities this year, they saw some critical physical improvements that the Farm needed to both improve the overall operation and enhance the experience of the farm for our visitors,” Woolever said. EDGEMERE FARM

Continued from Page 14

Woolever explained, “For operational uplifts, the Citysticks duo identified that the Farm needed power for our cold storage, which we, the team of growers at the Farm, also agreed was a critical need. We already built the cooler, so these funds will help us to employ an electrician to install a pole and get power from the grid, which will provide electricity for the refrigerator and other devices on the Farm.” When asked about solar power, Woolever said that they did try to use a little solar power energy last year, but it was not enough to consistently run a refrigerator. Also, the cost of going full solar would be too much. “We are not at that level of funding to go solar,” Woolever said. “Also, we agreed that overall, the farm needs to be more handicap accessible. Right now the entry path leading to the farm stand has gravel, and it’s difficult to maneuver if you are in a wheelchair or for those

THURSDAY, MARCH 16, 2017 walking with a cane. We want to repave the pathway into a hard, smooth surface so that it is easy for anyone to walk on. “We also have a lot of seniors coming to the Farm with WIC Checks (Senior shares), so having a cane or any difficulty walking, the present gravel surface could be difficult to walk on,” Woolever said. As for the sink and drainage issue the Farm faces, Woolever said, “We have had an ongoing challenge with the sink as we don’t have a sewer drain, so we have to physically pump all the water out, which is not a bad thing, as the best use of grey water is to recycle it in the compost or on plants. However, it became a really big challenge with events. Taking dishes off site to run them through a dishwasher became a hassle. Obviously, we want everything extremely clean because when you are dealing with food, you have to be extremely clean and safe. We only use Dr. Bronner’s soap, and are really vigilant about not washing any meat or grease in the same basin. In

addition, we also have a rain catchment that we share with our neighbor farm next door, which catches the rain that runs off the roof into a cistern, that we are able to access. “A few years back, someone had left this beautiful old, antique soap stone double-basin sink. With the Kickstarter funding help, we are going install it and use buckets underneath, and empty them as needed and reuse the grey water. Eventually next year, maybe we will dig an underground tank, and source local Broad Channel company, Call A Head to pump out the water,” Woolever said. In terms of the aesthetic amendments, Woolever and her team, with the Citysticks chefs input, identified that the picnic tables desperately need to be refurbished. “They are old and a bit splintery, so we want to sand, polish and paint the picnic tables for a more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing experience for diners,” Woolever said. Edgemere Farm and the Citysticks team have set their

Page 15 Kickstarter fundraising goal at $6K. Based on the money donated, some awards donators can receive include: Having the farm for a whole night, with a private dinner for up to 10 people; a breakfast or dinner for two at the Farm; voucher for Woolever’s CSA, Rockaway Herbs, which includes tinctures, teas and ointments; an Edgemere Farm T-shirt and a social media shout out. Depending on what you choose, donators will receive all that is included under the contributed price point. Edgemere Farm’s Kickstarter campaign went live, Thursday, March 9, and they only have 30 days to raise the entire $6K. Woolever said, “If we don’t reach our goal, we don’t get any of the money. That’s just how Kickstarter works. I guess it is a motivator to get you to reach your goal.” For more information on how you can support Edgemere Farm, visit kickstarter.com/projects/1985209985/edgemeref a r m - i n -r o c k a w a y - b e a c h needs-your-help

Rustic Farmhouse Table (Part 2) By Artie Wallace

Here’s Part 2 of building a Rustic Farmhouse Table. Refer to last week’s paper for Part 1. Finishing Your Table: 1- Before you put the finish coat on, you will need to do some sanding. Make sure all edges are smooth and outer edges are slightly rounded. For an added touch you can sand the tabletop corners so that they are rounded. 2- Make sure your table is dust free, then apply the stain (color of your choice) in multiple coats. Do this by brushing on the stain and wiping it off with a staining rag or sponge after a few seconds. Repeat this until you get the desired color that you are looking for. Be sure to allow at least three hours between coats (more in high humidity). Dust your table before each coat.

3- Once again make sure your table is dust free, then apply a clear coat. I would recommend using polyurethane. Follow the instructions on the can in great detail; the instructions can vary between brands. You can apply additional coats; just follow the instructions about drying time between coats and dust before each coat. 4- Finally, glue a piece of felt to the bottom of each leg to prevent scratches to your floor. bay leaves, thyme and garlic. Fry on both sides until golden brown. Remove from pan with the herbs and garlic. Add the sliced onions and sweat down until soft. Add the cocoa powder and mix in. Return the chicken pieces and herbs and combine. Sprinkle enough flour to absorb any fat residue to form a basic roux. Stir in the wine and mix so there are no lumps and the sauce just thickens. You can adjust the acidity of the wine with a little sugar. Crumble in the chicken stock cube or sprinkle bouillon packet. Bring to a simmer and remove any impurities that rise to the surface. Place lid on and cook in the oven at 350 degrees for 45-60 minutes.

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Rosacea Rosacea is a common chronic skin disorder of the central face that is estimated to affect more than 16 million Americans. It is a syndrome that consists of various signs and symptoms including skin redness, telangectasias (red dots), swelling, papules and pustules (pimples), eye lesions, and rhinophyma (excess growth of skin on the nose). Also included may be burning and stinging of the skin and the feeling of something in the eye. Rosacea typically first appears between the ages of 30 to 60. In addition, people with rosacea often re-

port lowered self-esteem and embarrassment at their physical appearance. For example rhinophyma, which causes redness and bulbous enlargement of the nose, used to be slangly referred to as a “beer nose.” Recent medical research has suggested that rosacea may have deeper connections with general health as it has been linked to an increased risk of serious systemic disorders. A recent study done in Taiwan found that those with rosacea were more likely to have hypertension, elevated lipid levels, coronary artery

The Rockaway Times

disease, and peripheral arterial disease. Other studies have found links to thyroid cancer, skin cancer, allergies, respiratory diseases, female hormone imbalances, GERD, and urinary diseases. There is no diagnostic test for rosacea. Rather the diagnosis is usually based on the presence of primary and secondary symptoms. Rosacea may be confused with acne, sun-related skin damage, and the skin changes found in lupus. Age is the key factor in differentiating between acne and rosacea. ANA (anti-nuclear antibody) testing was often used to differentiate between lupus and rosacea, however people with rosacea were often found to also have elevated ANA levels, making differentiating between the two more difficult. A history of extensive sun exposure can differentiate between rosacea and sun-damaged skin. The natural history of rosacea is characterized by periods of remission alternating with periods of exacerbation. This

often makes treatment problematic. Treatment consists of oral and topical medications including antibiotics, light therapy, laser therapy, and skin surgery. Lifestyle modifications need to be made as rosacea can be triggered by factors such as sun exposure, emotional stress, hot and cold weather, wind, heavy exercise, and alcohol consumption. Skin care is important as well. Consistent, gentle skin care is important. Skin irritation can be triggered by (topical) alcohol, witch hazel, fragrance, menthol, peppermint, eucalyptus oil, or harsh scrubbing. Definitive diagnosis of rosacea is usually made by a dermatologist. If you have been diagnosed with rosacea, it is important to get to your medical doctor to be sure that you do not have any of the other diseases that have been linked to it. For more information go to www.rosacea.org Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes.com

RAA Irish Variety Show This Sunday Ready to get your Irish on? This Sunday, March 19, the Rockaway Artists Alliance is ready to roll out their annual St. Patrick’s Irish-themed variety show. Starting at 1 p.m., the community and family friendly show will feature music, stories, humor and more in the RAA’s T-7 Gallery at Fort Tilden. Admission is free, though donations are always welcome. Performing a mix of Irish songs- favorites, traditional and new, and other material, will be Sheila Cassidy, Walter Ensor, Kevin Stokes and Joe Culleton of “The Locals,” plus John Simonelli and Dan Guarino, who will also host. We hear there may even be whiff of corned beef and cabbage, and other refreshments in the air. “We’ve been doing this show for a few years now,”

Guarino said. “We’ve been able to get some very talented performers and also some very surprise guests. Not long ago we had a woman who raised her hand and shyly asked if she could sing a song. She blew the room away!” “More than that, people from all over the community come out and have fun at this show. As I explain to people, in Rockaway, St. Patrick’s is not a day, it’s a season!” Visitors can also come early and enjoy RAA’s newest exhibition, Designed By Nature. The gallery is open Sunday and Saturdays from 12 to 4 p.m. This is their first showcase of the year and runs to April 19. The Rockaway Artists Alliance invites everyone in Rockaway and Broad Channel to join in and “go green” this Sunday. And that’s not just pulling your leprechaun!

Originally called the “Rockaway Moon,” the iron sculpture that served as a stage backdrop and bridge between Rockaway Artists Alliance’s sTudio 6 and sTudio 7 galleries, came to be known as the “Moon Stage.” After being in place for nearly seventeen years, the sculpture has succumbed to the elements and will be removed before spring. Formerly part of the stage set for “Ring ‘Round the Moon,” a Lincoln Center production at the Belasco Theatre on Broadway (April-June 1999), the installation of the sculpture in Fort Tilden was conceived by former RAA board director and member of the Belasco staff, Jan Nebozenko. The set was dismantled and brought to the fort by the Belasco staff and the Lincoln Center production crew. On site volunteers from RAA, Rockaway Theater Company, National Parks Service, Bracci Fence and Iron Works, Two Brothers Construction, and more began the three year process of modification and installation. The Moon Stage opened as a performance space in 2003, and saw the heyday of its use from 2005-2010. During those years RAA staged the Summer Moons concert series from 2005-2007. The series hosted several musi-

cal acts each summer featuring local favorites like Indaculture, Squid and special guests, Seaside Songfest. There were magicians and belly dancers to add variety and spice things up. During those years, RAA’s camp kidsmART hosted the annual camp show on the stage, and often RAA’s opening receptions for art exhibitions were complemented by dance, music and theatrical performances on the stage. The gazebo stage set was designed for interior use and never intended to be an outdoor piece. Through the years, RAA tended to the sculpture extending its lifespan, welding weak joints, cleaning and painting the piece. Unfortunately, the combination of salt air and hurricanes have weakened the metal beyond salvation. While RAA is sorry to see the Moon Stage leave the organization’s campus, there are plans for something new to be put in its place. Always interested in improving the grounds and capitalizing on their unique placement within an urban national park, RAA will begin to rethink the space between their two galleries. The process will include an exploration of ideas from artists and landscape designers in concert with the National Park Service.

The Rockaway Times

FRIEND OF BILL By John Sica

In 1979, Rita and I moved to Venice Beach, California. I got a job as a cook in the Rose Cafe. On my first day, I was in the kitchen cooking, listening to a new band called the B52's. A waiter came into the kitchen and said, "Is that the B52's?" A friendship was started, and Rita and I became best friends with him for the next two years we lived there, spending all our off-hours together partying and listening to music. A few weeks ago he passed away, Bill Paxton. At the time, Bill had just recently eloped with a girl, Kelly, from his hometown of Fort Worth. Her family was not happy that she had run off with Bill, just a waiter and a dreamer. He had studied acting and was determined to make it in Hollywood, like so many other waiters. In the first few weeks that Bill and I became friends, she had an ailment that hospitalized her. I forget what it was, I remember it wasn’t life-threatening, but she was in the hospital for about a week. It was a week that would change his life. Bill loved her and wanted to make her happy, so he asked me to help him tile the entranceway to his apartment in Santa Monica so he could surprise her when she came home. One morning that week though, her two little dogs got out and ran in the street and were killed. When he told his wife, she decided to go back to Texas to “rehabilitate” on the advice of her family. She never returned and he was devastated. Rita and I became his California family. And he was more determined than ever to succeed. I remember when he got his first part in a movie, I believe the title was, “Night Warning.” It wasn’t a big movie and he had a small part, but he wanted to stand out. His first day of shooting was a night shot and he was nervous, so I convinced him to split a pint of Jack Daniels with me. The next morning when I asked him how it

went, he was bummed out. He said the director was furious with him and told him if he ever showed up to work like that again, he would never work again. He told me in his scene he was supposed to be angry with someone, so he took it upon himself to jump up on a table and make a scene. The funny thing was, two days later the director came up to him and told him he was watching the “dailies” and that scene was brilliant. He was friends with Bill Mumy from sci-fi series, “Lost in Space.” They were both from Texas. Mumy had a band called Barnes and Barnes and they made a goofy song called FishHeads. This was before MTV was ever invented, but Bill had a vision to make a music video to the song. I believe we made the first music video ever. I remember when he started losing confidence in the project, I would motivate him. I had the key to the restaurant I was working in at the time, and we would sneak in, in the middle of the night, to shoot the scene where the fish head was “floating in the soup.” In that scene, I had to lick the fish head. I remember Bill for weeks had a collection of five-day dead fish heads in a bag in front of his apartment, and his neighbors were not so happy. He would go to the fish market once a week and they would give him the fish heads for free. They had no idea what he was doing with them. Eventually we finished, and he got the video on Saturday Night Live through his perseverance. Meanwhile, his other career as a waiter wasn’t going so well. One day some customers gave him a penny tip so he followed them out to the parking lot and threw it at them. He was fired. He wanted to start a tile business with me, but we weren’t very good at it. He got a paper route, which worked out well for him. He started at 3 a.m. and was finished by 7

FRIEND OF BILL

Continued from Page 28 a.m., so he was free to go on auditions. While at an audition he came up with an idea for another short music video called “Love Tap.” We shot that on a weekend, working on it 72 hours straight because he rented the camera equipment and could only afford three days. On the second night, I left to go to work in a restaurant and had a terrible accident, which landed me in the hospital for a few days. Bill had no idea what happened to me when I didn’t show up to finish the filming. He started getting more parts, each one a little better than the last. One thing about Bill though, he never changed. He loved my wife, Rita, and what he saw in our relationship was what he had wanted in his first marriage. My friends became his friends, and I got close with his dad, the “Orange Cat” and his brother, Bob-O. Bill and his brother used to come to Kelly Park in Brook-

John, Rita and Bill. lyn to watch my football games when I played for the Federation. I remember he came to my buddy, Bobby and Laura’s wedding, and after-party in Buckley’s in Marine Park. He wasn’t much of a sports fan. He knew from his childhood that he wanted to make films, but he quickly became fascinated with sports, watching me and my friends. He even had Rita teach him some basics of basketball so he wouldn’t look spastic for a

scene in “Lords of Discipline.” They went to a park in Venice Beach where she helped him with his dribbling and shooting. In later years, when we moved to Rockaway, he and I went to the Raintower, a bar that used to be above Healy’s, to watch Game Seven of the World Series. I think it was the first time he ever watched a baseball game, he was so enthralled by it. When my kids went to California on vacation, he took

Page 29 them to the Jay Leno show, where he was appearing. Rita and I would go with him to Saturday Night Live when he appeared as host. The after-parties were legendary. I remember telling Will Ferrell that he would never make it. He took me seriously and was upset. Hey, I was wrong, and was just breaking his…. Over the decades we slowly lost touch, and the day before he passed I was thinking of calling him, when I heard he was playing a cop on the new show, “Training Day.” Funny, since I played a cop for 20 years. When I heard the tragic news, I thought back to all these memories and more, and I was reminded of something I said four years ago when Dylan Smith died suddenly. Tell the people that you love, you love them. Drop a personal line of friendship to an old friend. As I write this, another great man and friend, Brian Ward, passed doing what he loved, on his surfboard in Puerto Rico. Rest In Peace.

The Rockaway Times

Finding the Music By Lou Pastina

While sailing from Greece, Ulysses lashed himself to the mast of his ship and stuffed his ears, so that he wouldn’t hear the call of the bewitching sirens that caused so many ships to crash into the rocks of the Mediterranean Sea. Our mermaids here in Rockaway are nothing like those mythical creatures from ancient times. Here in Rockaway we unstuff our ears in search of the music, especially when it’s snowing in March! With months to go before we can enjoy all the outdoor venues that fill the air with notes of joy, where does one go to find the music? I recently ventured down to 72nd Street one Thursday evening to the Rockaway Brewing Company. Kyle Wade recently started an Open Mic there. While sparsely attended, the beer was cold, the performers passionate, and the mood jolly. What more can you ask? I am told they are going to continue every Thursday night. Kyle and his talented father, Paul, have also been keeping the music alive during the winter at Healy’s and The Knights of Columbus. Worth a night out, check out the Wades. The Belle Harbor Yacht club has one of the best-kept secrets in all of Rockaway in its second floor lounge. Each Friday night they have music. This past Friday was Walker, who recently played at BB Kings with his band. In addition you can catch solo acts like Chris Vought and Gerald Bair playing in this intimate setting. In addition, if you like yoga with your music, you should know that Ocean Bliss has moved to the BHYC and offers classes all week long. Yoga and music, doesn’t get any better than that! If you have never thought about stopping into Rogers on

THURSDAY, MARCH 16, 2017 116th Street, then its time to re-evaluate that thought. Rogers has been hosting music all winter long, and in fact, Indaculture will be there this coming weekend. Close to home, even on a cold night, this is an excellent stop to hear some live music. The St. Paddy’s Day Parade brought me to Bungalow Bar to catch Bobby Butler and his assortment of friends playing Irish tunes and other ditties. The erstwhile Mr. Butler had a collection of musicians from various bands sewed together just for this event. When I asked how long they practiced to get ready for the gig, he slyly let me know they didn’t. But you would never know it from the great music they made. Over at the Community House, the newly formed BEasy Band followed Wine with Sue to rock the house of post-parade revelers. The mainstay of the establishments, however, is Thai Rock, with the inimitable Robert Kaskel as host. He and his wife invite musicians from all over the city, across a broad spectrum of musical genres to fill his Thai joint (no pun intended) with music. I recently took in the Kearney Brothers band there, and was treated to a night of unparalleled blues-playing by the dynamic Breezy brothers. Even our Parisian friend Claudette, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Roxbury have hosted music sessions this winter with the ever-present Grayriders Band in all their various configurations. We are truly blessed to have so many options to find music in our small, but diverse peninsula. But these places have a tough time during the winter and need our patronage. Yes, the summer crowds swell the numbers of out-of-towners, but in order to get to those days, these establishments need to stay in business, so when you are thinking of just curling up in front of the TV, unlash yourself from the masts of your ship, and get out and listen to the music. That music will stay with you through the whole week and keep you going when all else fails. And bring your mermaid, she will not cause you to crash among the rocks in Rockaway!

Knowing the Heart By Helen Kilgallen

Our heart is at the center of our being human. In the heart is where our deepest thoughts, intuitions, emotions and decisions find their source. We often fail to know our hidden centers and so we live and die without knowing who we really are. Have you ever looked into the mirror and asked yourself, “Who am I?” You are not the body, you are not your mind, you are not your title such as wife, husband, mother, father, sister, brother, friend, etc. You are so

much more. Recently, I took the opportunity to spend a day with myself and explore where I grew up in Park Slope. One of the places I visited was the Brooklyn Museum to see Georgia O’Keefe’s exhibit. She was a famous woman artist who lived a full life to the age of 99. I remember her well because she created much of her art in New York, where she lived for 30 years until her husband passed away. She then decided to move to New Mexico, living in a quiet, beautiful landscape where she could be

·

alone with herself and create even more spectacular art. She was simply amazing and so talented. As I viewed photographs taken of her, I could almost see her soul through her quiet, serene eyes. She looked like a woman who truly knew who she was and lived her life exactly how she wanted to. I was inspired and a bit envious, but happy to see such strength in a woman born in the late 1800’s. How can we, living in today’s society, find our quiet center, leading to the heart center? Is it possible in New York City to be relaxed and calm? I think it is a challenge, but most certainly possible. We live in one of the greatest cities. There are resources everywhere and yet we feel stressed. Our struggles are real to find peace and calm. The only way I can find the calm amid the storm is to close my eyes to my surroundings. Focus on a mantra and my breath. Breathing in, I am calm, breathing out, I am peace. It works every time for me so I repeat it often. Then I open my eyes to the beauty in front of my eyes. If I were an artist, I would paint a picture; if I were a photographer, I

The Rockaway Times would take a picture; if I am me, I would breathe it all in. Where is your heart? Are you afraid to be who you were meant to be? Is there something or someone holding you back? Finding your heart is finding your love with yourself. You don’t have to change your life, you just have to be with yourself. You are perfect just the way you are. You are enough and your heart is your guide. The heart is a masterpiece. It has a subtle energy that vibrates loudly. We feel and hear the soft beat, but it is an instrument that plays our life’s song. Listen, feel and be with yourself. The following meditation is taken from the book, “A Pocketful of Miracles.” Imagine a star of living Light in the air just above your head and slightly in front of you. Allow streams of liquid loving Light to cascade over you and wash through you, cleansing you of any fear, negativity or illusion that veils the light within your heart. Let your heart light expand and become one with the Light of God, wrapping you in a great egg of light. May you feel and experience the light of your heart every day.

Who doesn’t love Amazon? Virtually anything your heart deVi sires is merely a click away from sir being delivered to your front be door. If there’s anything better do than Amazon Prime, I haven’t th figured it out. For about $100 per g year, you get free shipping on ye most purchases, and unlimited m access to Amazon Prime movies ac and TV series. Subscribe & Save an means I never have to remember m to buy toilet paper, tooth brushes, es K cups or deodorant again. Amazon remembers for me, and Am they appear magically on a bith monthly basis. m For mall averse guys like me, the whole notion of shopping while wh sitting is like heaven on earth. I sit never have to leave my couch, ne fight traffi c, fi nd parking, or dodge g hordes of teenaged girls gum ho snapping their way to the next big sn sale at Abercrombie & Fitch. sa But, as my father used to say, “there’s only one fly in the ernt“t

ment!” The boxes. Endless piles of cardboard carcasses grow in my garage like crabgrass. Before Christmas, it gets so bad, it actually makes my kids’ rooms look neat by comparison. It’s not all the fault of unrestrained consumerism either. Amazon is an incredibly wasteful packer. I’ll order some ballpoint pens, and they show up in a box normally reserved for a refrigerator. What’s the answer? Amazon needs to accept box returns. Provide a label in each package that allows the consumer to affix it to the newly empty box, and have UPS bring it back to where it came. Amazon gets to re-use the boxes, UPS gets return business, and we all feel better about recycling. Public relations bingo! And I get to reclaim my garage for truly important things, like the 200 rolls of paper towels I ordered from Subscribe & Save. Got an idea you’ll never do anything with? Well, send it along! Meeks Takes Down Presidential Policies at Town Hall By Kami-Leigh Agard

Hyped-up weather reports of Winter Storm Stella, (yes it had a name), predicted to wreak havoc in just a few hours, did not deter droves of people from attending Congressman Gregory Meeks’ (D-Far Rockaway) Town Hall Meeting at the Rockaway YMCA in Arverne on the evening of Monday, March 13. The room was packed as folks waited in anticipation to hear Rep. Meeks’ reports from the Hill regarding the Affordable Care Act and Immigration. Also locals made it their business to voice their concerns over public housing, resiliency projects and more. Meeks began by expressing his distaste for President Donald Trump’s policies over healthcare. “The policies and people, #45, (that’s how I refer to the president), put in place, has made it rough in the 115th Congress, and we only have reached the halfway point of his 100 days in office. “What does it mean for the families of the 5th congressional district dealing with #45? On the campaign trail he promised to protect social security, Medicare and Medicaid for all. He promised to provide healthcare and insurance for all. Now in office, #45 is trying to replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA) with the American Healthcare Act (AHA). The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office just released a report stating that under the Republicans’ proposed AHA, 24 million Americans would lose their health insurance — 14 mil-

lion by 2018 and 24 million in 10 years. “AHA decimates Medicaid, deprives millions of families from healthcare coverage by effectively denying uninsured Americans coverage and depriving millions of others from the coverage they were able to get it under the Affordable Care Act,” Meeks said. “One of the things that I think is the most absurd, because it is like Robin Hood, AHA gives a $600B tax cut to the wealthy for giving the working, middle class and poor people nothing.” Meeks discussed how the proposal would affect those locally. “For those of us in the Rockaways, one of the ways we have worked together is to make sure people have received healthcare through federally-funded health out care programs like Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center in Arverne, who received a lot of federal funding through the Affordable Care Act. The Republicans’ proposal will be devastating for healthcare centers such as Addabbo’s, as it will take hundreds of thousands of dollars away from these programs,” declared Meeks. One Addabbo representative in the room chimed in that the Republicans’ proposal “would take 70 percent of federal funding from the healthcare center.” Meeks continued, “In my opinion, part of it is based upon a separate principal, if you believe every American should have healthcare, then you want to go with the ACA so that everybody contributes

·

To advertise in THE ROCKAWAY TIMES call 718-634-3030 ads@RockawayTimes.com

to the healthcare system, including young people who will also pay into the healthcare program, bringing down the cost for everyone. “What Paul Ryan's and #45’s healthcare plan does, it says you have a choice. Well, I don’t believe you have a choice when you don’t have any money to pay for healthcare. The ACA gives you a subsidy, so that it makes it affordable for the working class and others to pay for it. What the Republicans’ plan will do is take away those subsidies and give you a small tax credit that still will not be enough to pay for quality healthcare,” Meeks continued. “Also the Republicans want to change the definition of what ‘care’ is, which is not comprehensive. So depending on what sickness you have and you go to the doctor, you could be told that you are not covered by insurance because your ailment does not fit into the coverage described in your plan. That poses a big problem because a lot of people utilize emergency rooms as their primary care, and can’t pay for it. So hospitals are going to go broke and close because folks aren’t going to have insurance to pay for their care.” Assembly District Leader Lew Simon spoke up, “I just want to speak for the tens of thousands of people I represent. Everyone is frightened about the ACA being taken away, including seniors and the disabled on Medicare. Paul Ryan is part of the devil’s worship gang. I call Mr. Trump the devil. The Republican plan will harm the Addabbo Healthcare Center and St. John’s Hospital, the only hospital we have on the peninsula, which is already financially struggling. With your leadership, I hope we

can convince the Republicans to work with you. You are our voice.” “The Republicans’ bill is going on the House floor for a vote next week, and I am going to oppose their healthcare plan with everything I have,” Meeks said. Regarding President Trump’s executive order banning travel from six Muslim-majority countries, Meeks said that Democrats are unified on opposing this. “I don’t believe it is American,” Meeks said. “We, who have been a nation of immigrants, are now anti-immigrant? If you listen to the rationale of this executive order, you would think we did not have a vetting process before. Germany has let over eight million refugees in. In the U.S., there have only been 20,000. And there is no record of any of them being terrorists. Most of the terrorism taking place in this country is by those who are homegrown on American soil.” He advised that immigrants, worried about deportation, should be well-armed with information to protect themselves. “There is due process, you do have rights. If agents come to your door, do not open it. Ask them whether or not they have a warrant. If they do, it must be signed by a judge. They're coming to intimidate. Don't get scared, but make them identify themselves. And this is very important: If the signatures on the warrant are of an administrator or district attorney, it is not enough. It has to be a judge,” Meeks said. He also advised that folks should also walk with copies of their immigration papers or their visa at all times, in case they are stopped.

Take the Plunge for Special Olympics By Katie McFadden

Spring is right around the corner, so why not kick off the season with a dip in the ocean? On Saturday, March 25, hundreds will be Freezin’ For a Reason at the third annual Rockaway Polar Plunge benefitting Special Olympics New York. Last year, more than 300 people jumped into the ocean and many more looked on during this new annual tradition. From friends, to families, to business owners and even Special Olympics athletes, everyone took the plunge for a good cause. Organizers are hoping to have even more participation this year. They’re set out with a goal of raising $60,000 to support Special Olympics New York programs, one of which takes place at St. Camillus in Rockaway. Last year’s plunge raised $37,000. With the event less than 10 days away, nearly $20,000 has

been raised so far, but organizers are hoping they’ll close in on their big goal with more participation. The event takes place at Bay 9 in Riis Park on Saturday, March 25, with day-of registration starting at 10 a.m. Participants will take the plunge at noon and will then be able to dry off and head to the Bungalow Bar on Beach 92nd Street to warm up at the after-party. The after-party, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m., will feature food and plenty of fun. The plunge is dedicated in memory of one of Rockaway’s own special athletes and a former employee of the Bungalow Bar, Emily Hutton, who passed away in August 2014. Team Emily’s Favorites will be taking the plunge in honor of Emily. Every Plunger that raises $150 receives an official Plunge sweatshirt and will receive even more great prizes for raising more money. For those who are “Too Chicken to

Plunge,” there will be a chicken coop for spectators to take pictures, and “Too Chicken to Plunge” t-shirts will be available for purchase. If you don’t want to plunge, but raise $150, you will still receive an official Polar Plunge sweatshirt. Special Olympics New York has 67,162 (2015 census) athletes training and competing year-round in 22 Olym-

pics-style sports. The athletes and their families or caregivers are never charged to participate. It costs $400 to support training and competition for one athlete for one sports season. If you set your plunge goal at $400, you’ll support an athlete for an entire season. To find out more or to pre-register, head to www.polarplungeny.org/rockaways

COLON CANCER MONTH

Colon Cancer is the second leading cause of U.S. cancer deaths. March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. • Did you know that eating more fruits and vegetables could reduce your risk of colon cancer? • Did you know that quitting smoking and reducing alcohol consumption can also reduce your risk? Throughout March, South Nassau will post tips about prevention, detection and treatment. Follow us on Facebook (facebook.com/SouthNassau) and Twitter (@SouthNassau) for ways to stay healthy. If you are 50 or older, make your colon health a top priority and get screened — your doctor can share new options for colon cancer screening.

For more information about screenings, services and appointments, call 877-SOUTH-NASSAU or visit southnassau.org/colorectalcancer.
