In true Rockaway fashion, the peninsula is stepping up to do what they can for those in need and this time the focus is on Ukraine. As the world watched the horrors of the war in Ukraine unfold, Rockaway sprang into action. Several collections for supplies and donations have formed. One of the first was spearheaded by the Russian American Officers Association and the NYPD, with all NYPD precincts opening their doors as drop-off points for medical supplies. After learning of the effort from her daughter who is an officer for the 61st Precinct in a big Ukrainian area of Brooklyn, Liz Wood Geraghty started connecting with local groups in Rockaway to ramp up efforts. Then she coordinated with St. Francis de Sales’ Catholic Academy as well as their religious instruction program, with the help of Principal Dr. Chris Scharbach, Heather Killian and Anne Marie Greene. The students got to work and within a week, the collection was a major success. “We brought three truckloads of supplies to the 61st Precinct,” Geraghty said. Marybeth Bevaqua, whose friend Jenn Mckinnon also works in the 61st Precinct also held a 50/50 and was able to raise $635 for Mckinnon to buy additional supplies for the drive. “It’s disheartening what’s going on in the Ukraine. How are they going to get anything? People are over there fighting for themselves, and nobody is stepping up to help them. They’ll
take anything and everything they can get right now,” Geraghty said, speaking on her decision to help with the collection. When Geraghty dropped off the donations to the 61st Precinct, it made it all worth it. “The officer who was there told me his family is from Ukraine, so he was very excited to see what we did,” Geraghty said. According to Geraghty, the NYPD has connected with Razom for Ukraine, a nonprofit agency that is providing aid for Ukraine. “They come to the precinct to pick up the stuff, package everything and ship it to Poland to backdoor it into Ukraine,” Geraghty said. The 61st Precinct will be collecting supplies from the precinct up until March 18. Donations can be dropped off at the SFDS rectory (129-16 RBB). Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato is also holding a supply drive. Supplies can be dropped at her office (95-16 Rockaway Beach Blvd) through March 19.

BHPOA Meeting Focuses on New Developments By Katie McFadden
As the Belle Harbor Property Owners Association reconvened, the hot button issue of the night was building, building, building. About 50 people gathered at P.S. 114 on Tuesday, March 15 for the BHPOA’s first meeting since November. BHPOA President Paul King immediately addressed the main topic of the meeting saying, “There’s been a lot of overdevelopment on the peninsula. Some of those projects are closer to home,” he said. Those projects closer to Belle Harbor were later discussed, but King first provided some updates on the beach action. He said with new leadership at the Parks Department, the civic and Councilwoman Joann Ariola are hoping to hold a meeting with them soon. He announced the Army Corps of Engineers would be at their next meeting in May or June to provide updates. In the meantime, King said that groin work planned for Beach 125th and 130th this sum-
mer, will instead happen next year, as work is currently taking place further downtown, and expected dredging and sand replenishment later this year will change the original schedule. Next, Belle Harbor’s elected officials, Senator Joe Addabbo, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato and Councilwoman Joann Ariola were all on hand to provide updates. Addabbo explained that Albany is currently negotiating its $216B budget and he addressed a topic of concern for the meetings—Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). Legalizing ADUs would allow homeowners to turn things like attics, basements, garages or backyard sheds into additional apartments. After seeing the effects of flooding from Hurricane Ida causing deaths in illegal basement apartments in Queens, locally, the legalization of ADUs doesn’t have much support. “I don’t agree with ADUs,” Addabbo said. He explained that Governor Hochul took it out of her budget as a statewide issue, but $25 million

had been allocated for localities to decide whether they want to legalize ADUs. Addabbo also said he’s sponsoring a bill along with Pheffer Amato saying cop killers should never be granted parole, and in the wake of increasing utility bills, he’s introducing a bill saying utility companies must give customers 60 days notice ahead of rate increases so they have a chance to dispute them or save up. Pheffer Amato also shared that she is against ADUs. She’s also against Good Cause Eviction. “They’re taking away power of ownership over your home where you could not evict somebody. That’s been taken out of our budget and the next step is making sure it doesn’t get in our main budget,” she said. After someone brought up concerns over the condition of the boardwalk in Riis Park, Pheffer Amato said she will bring this up at an upcoming meeting she’s having with the National Park Service. She suggested people send photos to her office. She’s also
currently working on legislation to change insurance laws for women facing breast cancer so they have more of a choice in their follow up procedures and she’s supporting funding for 9/11 cancer research, childcare support and SUNY and CUNY infrastructure. Ariola spoke about the many ways she’s been keeping busy since entering office. She spoke of the covid testing vans she helped secure for the area. She spoke of staying on top of the Army Corps and Parks Department so they listen to the community’s wishes when it comes to things like dune crossovers. With the city budget, she’s working towards obtaining funding for an after-school program at P.S. 114. She’s been meeting with Phil Banks, deputy mayor for public safety and local precincts to address the community’s public safety needs. The meeting then switched gears to focus on all of the new developments taking place or in planning stages. A neighbor named Eric Rasmussen, who is on a committee focusing on the Neponsit Home, provided some updates. The building, which hasn’t been used since 1997, is slated to be demolished. Once that happens, the property, currently overseen by NYC HHC, will be transferred to the Parks Department, as a covenant in the property deed says it must be used as a healthcare facility or parkland. Demolition was expected to begin this spring but will instead begin after the summer is over as NYC Lifeguards currently utilize this property as a shack and storage facility. The BHPOA says they will keep a close eye on anything going on with the property as progress is made.
John Signorelli provided some updates on the demolition of the old PS 256 building and development of a playground. Abatement will be completed this month and the demolition is expected to be complete by September, six months ahead of schedule. The playground is expected to be complete by February 2023. While the building is demolished, a wooden fence and netting will go up around the area to protect surrounding homes from debris. Another development of concern is the plan for ALMA’s Surfside property from Beach 105th to Beach 108th Street. The tenant association SHAFT asked the BHPOA for their support in fighting against a proposal to build three new buildings on the property that would bring an additional 2,000 units with only 1,500 parking spaces, while eliminating current parking for the 700 current units, the dog run and the pool on the property. A Rockaway Civic Association survey showed 94.3% of people are against this project. Councilwoman Joann Ariola chimed in, saying she’s been on top of it with meetings and when
it comes to the ULURP process for the zoning changes for this development, she will do everything to make sure it doesn’t become reality. “That’s the most narrow portion of the peninsula. It cannot support a project like that, but beyond that, they’re not talking about infrastructure, roadways, schools, everything else that’s needed. We’re a hard no on this. That’s not happening,” she said. A plan to demolish the Chai Home on Beach 125th and replace it with a nine-story rental property was also addressed. The 90-story building, thirty feet higher than neighboring oceanfront buildings, would have 58 units and 29 parking spots on a street that doesn’t allow summer parking. A Rockaway Civic Association poll showed 88.5% of people are against this proposal. Ariola said she would not back the project. “I will not support the proposal as put forth,” she said. The issue of ADUs was also brought up again with the BHPOA saying they were against it. “People will take advantage and it can do bad things. We can’t have this
undermined by the stroke of a pen in Albany. We need to keep on top of them,” King said. Dealing with worldwide issues, local resident Andrey Gordiyenko was invited to speak about what’s going on in Ukraine and how Rockaway can help. Born in Kiev in 1993, Gordiyenko shared memories and spoke of some of the atrocities taking place now with the war, including civilians being targeted, and how citizens are taking actions themselves to fight back. “This war was expected to last two to three days. We’re on 22,” he said, speaking of the Ukrainian’s strength. To help, he suggested contacting federal representatives and encouraging them to enact a no-fly zone over Ukraine. He suggested Russian oligarchs, such as those who own properties in Manhattan, should have their properties taken away. He encouraged people to join protests. He also provided a list of reputable organizations to donate funds to including Razom for Ukraine, the International Fund for Animal Welfare and the Ukraine’s Armed Forces via the National Bank of Ukraine.

Breaking Ground On Broad Channel’s New School By Katie McFadden
Broad Channel’s P.S./M.S. 47 is one step closer to having a new home. On Tuesday, March 15, to celebrate the coming construction of a long-awaited new school building, an official groundbreaking ceremony was held with a host of officials and supporters. After years of neglect, exacerbated by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, Broad Channel’s public school on Shad Creek Road was in dire need of a pick me up. The solution was to start from scratch. After pleas from staff, parents, neighbors and local elected officals to address the delapidated building which was at 140% capacity, the City decided to act. With the help of the NYC School Construction Authority (SCA), a plan was made to create a brand new state-of-the-art, 260-seat replacement building for P.S. 47 in Broad Channel. The new four-story school will be a fully air-con-
ditioned, accessible facility for 3K through grade 8 students and will contain one 3K, one pre-k and one kindergarten classroom, eight standard classrooms, three special education classrooms, and middle school science demo and multi-use rooms. While the old school lacked a gymnasium, cafeteria, adequate outdoor play space and a library, the new building will have all of those elements and more. It will also have an art/ music room, a guidance suite, a medical suite, an administrative suite, at OT/sensory room and even bicycle storage and solar
panels on both roof levels. “Through a collaborative effort between the SCA, DOE, our elected officials, and local stakeholders, we’ll be replacing an old, dilapidated building with a modern, permanent home that meets the needs of the students in this wonderful community,” Nina Kubota, President and Chief Executive Officer of the New York City School Construction Authority said. “Every student deserves a strong academic foundation and opportunities to grow, and projects like this help foster our core mission to design and construct safe, attractive and environmentally sound public schools.” At the groundbreaking ceremony, P.S. 47 Principal Heather Lorenz was on hand to welcome everyone and express her gratitude toward seeing this plan move forward. “As the principal of P.S./M.S. 47, I am thankful to all that were involved in this project. Seeing the value of in-
vesting in this community, New York City is offering the children of Broad Chanel the opportunity to flourish in a future of limitless possibilities. This has truly been a collaborative effort by all parties involved—parents, community members, local elected officials, the DOE, the SCA and many more. We look forward to the children being able to return to their neighborhood school in September of 2023.” A $49.9 million contract was awarded to Citnalta Construction Corp. for the new replacement building, which was designed through a collaboration with the SCA and Purcell Everett Architects, P.C. Students at the school have been temporarily relocated the former Stella Maris High School until the new P.S. 47 is ready for occupancy for the start of the 2023-2024 school year. In District 27, the SCA will also be completing a 120-seat 3K Center on Beach 99th Street later this year and will open a new, 145-seat addition for P.S. 96 that will be ready in 2024.

ADAMS PROMISES NEW HEALTH CARE FACILITY Soon after receiving a letter from Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr., State Senator James Sanders Jr. and Assemblyman Khaleel Anderson appealing for “Additional healthcare facilities to the Rockaway Peninsula, specifically a NYC Health + Hospitals facility,” Mayor Adams announced in his Rebuild, Renew, Reinvent Economic Blueprint, the City will invest in community healthcare in neighborhoods most impacted by COVID-19. Adams’ plan says, “The City will explore ways to provide critical community-serving uses as part of City-sponsored redevelopment projects. To this end, the administration will invest in improving long-term health outcomes in Downtown Far Rockaway, a neighborhood facing disproportionate health disparities and impacts of COVID-19. Through a new public health facility and improvements to local parks, the City will provide local access to new community health resources and wellness programs, modeled after programs elsewhere in the city.”
In the letter to Adams, the officials said, “Few neighborhoods have been hit more disproportionately by COVID-19 than the communities of the eastern Rockaway Peninsula, including Far Rockaway, Arverne and Edgemere. In ZIP Code 11691 alone, we’ve lost 612 neighbors to COVID-19, the second-highest total in Queens and fourth most in New York City. “The demographics of western Rockaway couldn’t be more different than the eastern portion of the peninsula, as the neighborhoods of Belle Harbor, Neponsit and Breezy Point are significantly whiter, more politically conservative, and wealthier with higher rates of home ownership. But the pandemic has at least partially transcended these differences too, as ZIP Code 11697 has recorded more than 1,400 cases — totaling more than 42,000 cases per 100,000 residents, by far the highest such figure in the City. “It’s now NYC Health + Hospitals and City government’s turn to finally do right by the families of Rockaway.”

Dispatch from Ukraine: Just One Phone Call By Igor Mazepa
I can't write beautifully - I'm not a journalist. In addition, I didn't even think that I would ever write an article for the newspaper. However, maybe with these lines, I'll help at least one person, or maybe I'll save a life. My name is Igor. I am 35 years old. I live in Lviv, in Ukraine. For about 15 years, I have been a graphic designer of Russian, Ukrainian and American newspapers in the U.S. I want to talk about the history that is being formed today. Ukraine was attacked by the Russian Federation. "War" is a terrible word and a terrible event. Even more so if you are a participant in it. Now the Russian army is bombarding cities with artillery and airstrikes. Without aiming. Methodically destroying the population. They have brought terrible weapons: cluster bombs, "Buratino" or "Sunbursts." All these are forbidden to use because they are designed for mass destruction. Ramzan Kadyrov's army shelled and seized the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. The Ukrainian army is small (although professional: we have been deterring Russian aggression for almost ten years), but we have been given weapons that disable equipment. That is why the Russian army suffers enormous losses. Putin has decided to take the fight by force, following Zhukov's principle: "Women will give birth to more. They send
conscripts who are no more than 20 years old to us. The Javelin missile doesn't know who is in the tank: the soldier who came to kill for Putin, or the child who was allegedly brought here for training. Moreover, the child's mother will then be given a letter of commendation and some thousands of rubles, essentially papers, for his life. Now there is mobilization ... And there will be more and more killed: Russian soldiers, soldiers of the Ukrainian army, civilians old people, women, and children ... Does Putin want to go to war with Biden? Let them fight oneon-one. Why did I call the article "Just One Call"? Many of us have relatives, friends, and acquaintances in Russia. I have them too. Call, explain, and convince them NOT to send their son to the army now. Flat feet, bedwetting... whatever. Then he will be alive - and those he can kill will be alive. Moreover, if someone's son is already in the army - ask him to surrender. He will be fed, put in a warm room (they even put them in hotels if possible), get communications. After the war, he would be helped to get home. YouTube and international, not Russian, social networks will confirm my words. Understand the main thing - no one attacked Russia! This is the core fact! Our borders have always been open. No need for visas, no need for passports. Everybody was free to go and visit each other. Who of these people wants a piece of Ukrainian territory? Nobody.
Moreover, the attempt on the nuclear power plant? Who has already forgotten about Chernobyl? Remind yourself of that, go to the Internet. How many victims there were then - and they are still dying of cancer. In addition, nowadays, the troops are firing from
tanks into the reactor... Radiation knows no borders. Only one man in a bunker in the Altai can protect himself from it. A man for whom they are now dying in droves. V.V. Putin. Please. Just one call.
An Update On Iryna
Iryna Medvedovska, who works with us and wrote to us previously about surviving in the basement as bombs dropped in Kyiv, evacuated last week, making her way to western Ukraine, then Romania and has since made it to Italy. She and her family are safe. On March 14 she wrote us, “Today we will reach Italy, we find housing and I hope I will work.” She also sent this photo of herself and her family in Milan. Meeks Secures Federal Healthcare Funding
PRIME RIB MONDAYS
Some much-needed funding is coming to Rockaway’s healthcare facilities thanks to federal money secured by Congressman Gregory Meeks. On Friday, March 11, Meeks announced that he successfully secured more than 15 million dollars in funding for 10 projects in District 5 after Congress passed their 2022 fiscal spending bill. “I am proud to have secured funding that will make our community healthier, safer, stronger, and even more resilient. In addition to funding critical priorities at home and abroad, this bill includes meaningful investments throughout Queens and Nassau County that will provide our community leaders with the resources they need to rebuild following COVID-19’s disruption”. Funding for facilities on the peninsula include $2,000,000 for St. John’s Episcopal Hospital’s Behavioral Health Equity Renovation Project and $2,000,000 for its Women and Newborns Health Equity Renovation Project. The Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center in Arverne will also receive $1,500,000 for facilities and equipment. Other funding will go to projects in Jamaica, Richmond Hill, Westbury and Springfield Gardens. When Meeks first announced his request for such funding in July 2021, St. John’s released a statement saying, "On behalf of
St. John's Episcopal Hospital, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Congressman Gregory Meeks for his continued support, and advocacy for funding from the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services that will go towards our Women and Newborns Health Equity Renovation project, and our Behavioral Health Equity Renovation project," said Jerry Walsh, Chief Executive Officer of Episcopal Health Services. "As the only hospital located on the Rockaway, Queens Peninsula, these two projects will significantly help us achieve our mission of improving access to quality healthcare to the more than 130,000 community members that we serve. We look forward to receiving final funding approval from the House, the Senate, and the White House. Thank you again to Congressman Gregory Meeks for always taking into account the needs of the Rockaway communities." As the President is expected to sign this bill into law, Congressman Meeks’ office will jumpstart its process for considering funding requests to be included in next year’s fiscal spending bill. From Go Green: THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS AND CLIMATE CHANGE By Tom Last
The Galápagos Islands are located in the eastern Pacific Ocean, 605 miles off the west coast of South America. They are part of the Republic of Ecuador and are an archipelago of volcanic islands. Ecuador annexed the islands in 1832, three years after their independence from Spain, as part of the wider South American independence movement to escape the shackles of Spain’s domination in South America. The Galápagos Islands are astonishing with a comfortable climate, superlative ocean, beautiful beaches and a unique wildlife. The Islands are home to many endemic animals and plants. These animals that are not found in any other areas on the globe include – Marine and Land Iguanas, Giant Tortoise, Darwin’s Finches, Large Painted Locust, Lava
Lizards, Flightless Cormorant, Fur Seal, Wave Albatross, and many more. In addition, the surrounding waters contain – Orca Whales, Humpback Whales, Blue Whales, Bottlenose Dolphins, Sperm Whales, Minke Whales, Common Dolphins, and more. This menagerie of beautiful creates is unrivaled anywhere else in the world. With its unmatched natural beauty and unique variety of wildlife the Galápagos Islands have become a prime tourist destination. The Islands became a national park in 1959, and tourism started in the 1960s. However, the growth of both the tourism industry and local populations have threatened both land and sea species, in and around the Galápagos Islands. The marine sanctuary is under threat from illegal fishing activities, in addition to other development problems that come with a grow-
ing Island population. Introduced plants and animals, such as feral goats, cats, and cattle, brought accidentally or willingly to the islands by humans, represent another threat to Galápagos. Quick to reproduce and with no natural predators, these alien species decimated the habitats of native species. The native animals, lacking natural predators on the islands, are defenseless to introduced predators. Climate Change poses even more threatening consequences to the Islands. El Nino adversely affects the marine ecosystem, by increasing water temperatures around the Islands. Cold water, which is rich in nutrients, does not make it to the surface causing fish and algae to die off and animals that feed off them face starvation. To save the fragile ecosystem of the Galápagos Islands, naturalists have been working hard to keep it
protected thru Ecosystem restoration, tackling invasive species, supporting cutting edge research, and promoting Galapagos as a mode for the world. Recently these Naturalists helped to expand the Galápagos Islands Reserve by 23k acres. With the continued oversight of the Naturalists and Ecuadorian government, some of these ecological threats may be diminished. Reducing our carbon footprint here in the Rockaways has an effect not only on our local environment but also on ecosystems as far from us as the Galápagos Islands. By reducing our carbon footprint and taking care of nature locally, we help protect the entire planet from the effects of climate change. They are just numbers, right? They don’t mean anything, you are as young as you feel, right? I keep telling myself that. I mean if 40 is the new 30, and 50 is the new 40, and 60 is the new 50… Oh, who am I kidding! 65 is different. I mean I feel great, the mer-
maid controls my intake of milk duds and scotch, and soda, although she does a better job with the milk duds then the soda or scotch, but hey a man’s gotta have some creature comforts, right? I continue to work out and my mind is razor sharp. I have an active social life and I am a happy person even though the world seems to be heading toward the

next world war. And I remember turning 50 thinking this isn’t so bad, even though I couldn’t do anything remotely athletic anymore, I continued to walk long distances and ride my bike. Yes there have been the occasional sore knee, twisted ankle, heel spurs, a pain in the side that the doctor said was “sludge” (not really sure what he meant, note to self, see a new doctor), and I can’t see well at night, but we all know those new headlights on those fancy new cars are the cause of that, and I do find myself saying “what” more often than not, but I can’t help it if everyone suddenly started speaking lower, and did I mention the sludge? Hmmm, let me see, give me a minute, ahh yes, I did. So, my longest surviving parent made it to 93. That’s 28 years from now, if I subtract 28 from 65 that’s 37. Geez, I am not sure I even remember 37. I think it was a good year, that was 1994, wow the last millennium. I have all that time in front of me. Well, we all know that our plans are worthless, only one person has the plan, and we don’t have access to that, so I guess we gotta live everyday like it was our last. Turned 50 and got the AARP magazine, not a bad deal for $10 bucks a year. The mermaid was annoyed because she got it too, and she was only 47. Apparently, AARP sends a membership packet to the spouse too when the older one hits the mark. When you hit 62, you are Social Security eligible. But heck, you can tell those people, “Hey, I’m not that old, keep your damn money.” You got a choice in the matter (note to self, why did I tell them that!). But when you hit 65, well then, the Feds come back and tell you that you gotta get on their medical plan, because they know what’s best for you. Yep, talking about Medicare. So, unless you fit some narrow exceptions, you must sign up and if you don’t, they penalize you. Now it might be the best thing ever, but it’s very hard to know, because they make it so complicated. You got your plans A, B, C and D, and if you look hard enough you can probably find
The Rockaway Times them right through Z. The Feds have talked about lowering the age eligibility from 65 to something like 60. That would have helped with the cost of private insurance because that is simply insane. But it would be nice if they copied the AARP folks and when you hit 65, if you have a younger spouse, they get it too. But no, that’s not how it works, or at least to the best of my knowledge. Nope, the spouse has to find their own insurance until they get to 65. Most people, I am told, have some sort of gap insurance, and here AARP does provide a useful service. Those gap plans are usually a lot less expensive than a regular plan, and combined with Medicare, give you good coverage at a reasonable overall cost. But getting there ain’t easy. Kinda reminds me of the mafia, the benefits are great, you just have to be alive to enjoy them. But things could be a lot worse. We live in a free, democratic society, with oceans on two sides of our country and friendly neighbors on the other sides. And Rockaway is about as small-town USA in the big city as you can get, with neighbors that look after each other. And I know a lot of people like to go to the sunshine state, especially when they start hitting 65, but you know what, despite the nor’easters and the harsh winters, it’s still pretty nice here. So, did I tell you I am turning 65? Oh, and about that sludge!

Cold & Rain Can’t Keep the Runners Away
On Saturday, March 12, runners of the Rockaway Track Club got a little taste of what a run must be like in Ireland. Braving the elements of nor’easter-like weather, more than 100 athletes participated in the RTC’s St. Patrick’s 5K and
half marathon, and crossed the finish line. The 5K was won by Patrick Killgallen, followed closely by Conor Gallagher (both Sons of Rockaway). Each had remarkable finish times breaking 18:30 in extreme conditions. The top women finishers were Alix Cohen and Kaitlin Haines. The half marathon was won by Dario Leoncini in 1:29:08. Second Place went to Trivikram Pujar in 1:44:03. On the woman’s side, first place was Alla Dabode in 1:46:26 and second place was Kaitlyn Lavan in 1:53:03. Special Thank You to Jim Mulligan for leading both races on his bike in torrential wind and rain! That gravel path was created in two days and similarly one from 116th to 113th would have taken the same time. Hopefully, yet unfortunately, I will be moving elsewhere, and none too soon. Our beloved Rock- to drive, need schools, need transaway beach side community is be- portation, need hospitals, need an
evacuation plan, need utilities, and much more. We need to understand that all of Rockaway is our neighborhood. The fabric of our Rockaway will be changed forever. We will all be impacted by this development. We need to say enough is enough! On a more personal note, the Surfside proposal alone is proposing three 20 story towers with 2,000 new units, with 1,800 garaged parking spots but will be built on top of the existing three buildings that have 750 units with 550 parking spots. What is not said (which is a lot) is that the project eliminates most of the parking for the existing tenants. This is just one downside to the proposal but one I thought we could all relate to. I am asking you at this time to take the first step in joining the campaign opposing development in Rockaway. My heart tells me that in this day and age, this should not be. How does one pick up a gun against another at close range and pull the trigger? How can it be that families are targeted? How does one lead the air strike on a maternity hospital? It is incomprehensible to me that one man and a minority can initiate such atrocities and that it continues to go on. The consequences of war—
death, injury, sexual violence, PTSD, depression—do not go away and create negative effects way beyond the events. There is no “win” that could validate or soften any of it. Isn’t it time for a change? Isn’t it time to deny the force of war? Dalai Lama, Feb. 28th: “I have been deeply saddened by the conflict in Ukraine. Our world has become so interdependent that violent conflict between two countries inevitably impacts the rest of the world. War is outdated—non-violence is the only way. We need to develop a sense of the oneness of humanity by considering other human beings as brothers and sisters. This is how we will build a more peaceful world. Problems and disagreements are best resolved through dialogue. Genuine peace comes about through mutual understanding and respect for each other’s wellbeing. We must not lose hope. The 20th century was a century of war and bloodshed. The 21st century must be a century of dialogue. I pray that peace is swiftly restored in
Ukraine.” If we look at every other human being as a brother or sister, we will be able to coexist and work toward resolution. In real terms, if you know someone whose siblings don’t really get along, you also know that they won’t kill each other. If war was not an option, what would the action be? The mindset has to change, like the Dalia Lama says. What can inspire the powers that be to think differently? To think more about positive effects and their legacy as sacred and significant? To step back knowing that what is intangible is more important than what can be had and conquered? I believe in the power of focused intention. Let’s take the Dalai Lama’s words and make a powerful mantra: Let us be one with humanity and use peaceful means to settle our differences. Let peace and unity be primary, and money and power secondary. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be compassionate. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder caused by an abnormal gene that is inherited from both parents. It is the most common life-limiting autosomal recessive genetic disease in those of Northern European descent. It is estimated that one out of every 25 people is a carrier of the disease. A carrier is someone with one (of two) abnormal gene, whereas a person with the disease has two, or both, abnormal genes. If two carriers have children, their children will have a one in four chance of getting the disease. The affected gene is the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene, which controls the manufacture of a protein necessary for salt transport across different tissues in the body. In CF, that protein is either missing or dysfunctional, resulting in re-
duced salt and water movement, which causes thick mucus to accumulate in various parts of the body. First described in the 19th century, CF was accurately defined in the mid-1930s. It affects more than 30,000 children and adults in the U.S., and 70,000 worldwide. It is most common in non-Hispanic White individuals. CF typically affects the lungs, but can also affect the pancreas, liver, kidneys, and intestines. Newborn screening programs measure a chemical in the blood called immunoreactive trypsinogen, which is elevated in CF. These programs also usually include genetic testing. Diagnosis is confirmed by finding elevated levels of chloride in sweat (saltier sweat). The name of the disease is derived from the cysts that are found in the pancreas and the thickening, or fibrosis, of airway walls in the lungs. Abnormal, or absent CFTR protein, causes the accumulation of thick
mucus, which blocks the airways and leads to repeated episodes of infection and inflammation, and resultant lung damage. Respiratory failure is the most common cause of death in those with CF. Thick mucus in the pancreas can limit the release of digestive enzymes and leads to difficulty digesting food, malabsorption of nutrients, and poor weight gain. Damage to the pancreas can result in diabetes. People with CF usually have chronic sinusitis, men are usually infertile, and women have difficulty becoming pregnant. Abnormal thickening of sweat glands can increase the risk of dehydration in hot weather. Those with CF usually take inhaled medications daily to thin their mucus and use mechanical devices to dislodge mucus from the airways. Oral, inhaled, and sometimes intravenous antibiotics are used to control infections and treat flares. People with CF require a high-calorie diet with vitamin
supplements and pancreatic enzymes with each meal. A new class of drugs, called CFTR modulators, became available in 2011. They have effects on abnormal CFTR proteins within cells and improve salt transport. In the US, about 90% of those with CF have CFTR gene mutations that may respond to CFTR modulators. These drugs improve lung function, weight gain, and quality of life; decrease episodes of infection; and are expected to improve survival. In 1959, those with CF had an average life expectancy of 6 months. By 2010, that improved to 37 years in women, and 40 years in men. Today that number is 48 years without lung transplantation if treated in a specialty clinic. As War Rages in Ukraine, Have the Autistic Been Forgotten? Each day when you turn on the television or pull up your daily online news feed, Putin’s infantile war on Ukraine dominates the headlines. As we watch thousands of families fleeing, literally dodging bombs falling overhead, leaving behind fathers, brothers, uncles to fight for their freedom— our eyes glisten and hearts ache for all Ukrainians caught in the political crossfire. However, are ALL Ukrainians being given humanitarian aid to evacuate and obtain asylum in neighboring countries? My thoughts immediately went to the autistic community and other disabled individuals. Are they being evacuated with their families, or to put it more candidly—can they be evacuated? So little has been highlighted in both national and international news coverage that I decided to dig, and the more I unearthed, my sadness morphed into anger. Why is the autistic community being forgotten? According to the European Council of Autistic People and Autism Europe, here is the grim reality described in their call for action: At least one percent of the Ukrainian population (440,000) is on the autism spectrum. (Note, this is a conservative estimate as numerous individuals are generally undiagnosed). Autistic people and their families are being overlooked as the nature or extent of the disability is not fully understood. Many disabled individu-
als are either still trapped in the capital or fleeing with little or no support; proving to be a logistical nightmare amidst the urgency to evacuate not only the capital, Kyiv, but surrounding regions. Those living in institutions or orphanages and cut off from their families are even more vulnerable. Many autistic people with co-occurring medical conditions (epilepsy, sleep disorders or gastro-intestinal problems), are unable to access much-needed medications. Another concern is who will care for the vulnerable if their caregivers are killed. What about those children and adults with autism who are able to escape the war, but are misplaced/misunderstood by receiving countries? The other unsettling aspect of Putin’s war is the toll it will have on the hard-fought ground the Ukrainian autism community gained in elevating their visibility and needs. Like many of its neighboring eastern European counterparts, Ukraine is decades behind the U.S. in how autism is not only recognized but addressed. According to Kids On The Spectrum, as recently as 2014, autism was not a recognized diagnosis in Ukraine. Autistic children either received a diagnosis of mental retardation or intellectual disability and were labeled as “invalids.” Families forced to abandon their children in hospitals or care institutions, struggled financially, often finding themselves without work in order to care for their children
full time. The 2014 documentary, “Not Forgotten, the Untold Story of Autism in Ukraine” reveals the horrors and frustrations of families living with autism in Ukraine. Imagine, in present-day Ukraine, there are even doctors who claim they could “cure” autism with dodgy invasive procedures, including stem cell therapy! Thankfully in the last twenty years, with support from the west, Ukraine has made significant progress with how autism is recognized. However, Putin’s war threatens these advancements. According to Inna Sergienko, head of the Child with Future Foundation and Autism Europe consul: “Ukraine has long been under the pressure of several dangerous factors—the threat of war from Russia, COVID-19 and the low capacity of state institutions in charge of our field. It is clear that autism issues in these conditions have little chance of reaching the top of the order of the day in the country. We can do what we can in the independent sector, but our internal resources are
not enough—the amount of work and public requests are very high. Decreasing the pace of activity in this sensitive area could become a big problem because it threatens to break Ukraine’s achievements in supporting people with special needs over the past years.” Putin’s war goes far beyond territory or borders, it’s a pillage of our children’s progress, as evidenced with Russian forces targeting orphanages, schools and children’s hospitals. Folks—this is a call for us— Rockaway Strong—to step up and support our Ukrainian autistic family. Join Rockaway Beach Autism Families in building awareness, fundraise for organizations such as Autism Europe, and call on our local pols to use their platforms to bring even more visibility to the plight of the Ukrainian autistic community. Wrestle Talk RIP SCOTT HALL

This week, we start off with some unfortunate news as we are sad to report on the passing of World Wrestling Entertainment Legend and Hall of Famer Scott Hall aka "Razor Ramon" this past Monday, March 14, at the age of 63. Scott Hall, who had reportedly suffered a broken hip a month ago and underwent surgery, had suffered several heart attacks after the surgery. He was placed this past weekend on life support and eventually his immediate family made the decision to take him off life support. Scott Hall was indeed a bigger than life character and his ability to perform and entertain was unmatched. Scott is well known for his Razor Ramon gimmick while working for the WWE and eventually joining forces with Kevin Nash and moving on to start the
New World Order (NWO) in the now defunct World Championship Wrestling (WCW). My fondest memory of Scott Hall was his feud and his match against HBK - The Heart Break Kid Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania X in 1994, as the two put on a stunning performance in a Ladder Match. This match is considered one of the greatest matches of all-time. This is truly a sad time in pro wrestling and we here at Wrestle Talk, would like to extend our condolences to his family, friends and his fans. We will miss you Razor, RIP in the Big Ring in the sky. We have an update on Former AEW Superstar Cody, as we previously reported he was in talks with the WWE, then it was rumored that his negotiations with the promotion had come to a standstill. Now we are hearing that the two are back to the negotiation table and that the WWE plans for Cody
are to have him face off against Seth Rollins at WrestleMania, as reported by the Wrestling Observer Radio. I, for one, am very happy to hear this as a match between Cody and Seth Rollins would be incredible to watch. As we get closer to WrestleMania and if we hear any more developments, we will make sure to report them to you. We have news coming out of New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW), as rumors are afloat about the world-renowned Bullet Club. The faction has had a number of challenges as of late, and many are starting to speculate that members Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa may turn Babyface after many years as heels. They have been heels with the Bullet Club and as the Tag Team known as The Gorillas of Destiny. This definitely would be a huge change of pace for Tama and Tanga. But I say that
they will stay as heels and continue as a tag Team and eventually go their separate ways. The Question of the Week comes from Raila M. in Howard Beach, and she said, "I have heard that Big E may have to quit wrestling because of his injury. I want to know if you have any information about this?” Raila, I can report that Big E's injury to his neck was very serious, and he suffered fractures, to his C1 and C6 vertebrae. At this time, there is a strong possibility that his wrestling career might come to an end. If we hear of any further news regarding his health, we will report on it.
