Theatre Vandalized

By Dan Guarino

Smashed framed programs, strewn tickets, painted graffiti, fire extinguisher dust, and destroyed props and costumes were what was left behind after the vandals attacked the Rockaway Theatre Company (RTC) in Fort Tilden this past weekend.

The damage was discovered by RTC members Tony Homsey and Suzanne Riggs at approximately 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, March 13. They had entered the theatre that morning to do work in the building only to find more work than expected. The nearby Rockaway Little League building and T-6 building used by the Rockaway Artists Alliance were ransacked as well. The theatre and other buildings have been closed to the public since March 2020, due to the pandemic. The last production at the theatre was “Bye Bye Birdie, Jr.” staged in February of last year. Riggs confirmed U.S. Park

Police responded by 9:30 a.m. As part of the National Park Service’s Gateway National Recreation Area, Fort Tilden falls under their federal jurisdiction. Park officials said U.S. Park Police “responded to two separate incidents within Fort Tilden over the weekend. The incidents, at the T4 Building and Rockaway Little League building, are currently under investigation. In response to the situation, USPP increased patrols of the area. An individual was arrested; however, it has not yet been determined if the individual was involved in the incidents.” Officers found the vandals had most likely entered through a side window. Once inside, they ripped through drawers, cases and supply shelves, throwing the contents in all directions, and ransacked the concession and box office areas. They also did damage to the lobby area, including damaging and/or stealing costumes and props which had been donated. The vandals then climbed a small staircase into the theatre’s lighting booth, where they sprayed crude graffiti. From there they accessed a ladder into a portion of the building’s rafters, dropping a flashlight along the way. It did not appear that they went furContinued on page 4

THEATRE VANDALIZED Continued from Page 3 ther into this upper area. At some point, the vandals set off a fire extinguisher, covering everything in a thick brown chemical powder. Damage was also done to the ladies’ bathroom. Fortunately, the audience area, stage and backstage areas escaped attack. RTC confirmed that members were last in the building early Thursday, March 11. So the intruders struck somewhere between late Thursday and Friday, March 12, overnight into Saturday. USPP criminal investigative officers were scheduled to further examine the scene and take fingerprints from numerous surfaces, including the dropped flashlight. Their investigation is ongoing. They noted to RTC that break-ins had previously occurred also at the Rockaway Artists Alliance and Rockaway

Little League at Fort Tilden and at buildings at Riis Landing just across Rockaway Point Blvd. Any and all information regarding these crimes can be reported anonymously by calling or texting U.S. Park Police at 888-361-3332 or 202-3794877. In the meantime, RTC is accepting donations to repair the damage and do other needed work. Tax deductible donations can be made online at www.rockawaytheatrecompany.org or mailed to Rockaway Theatre Company, P.O. Box 840806, Rockaway Park NY 11694-0806. “Any amount is appreciated,” noted RTC’s Susan Jasper. She and John Gilleece appeared on a Facebook video describing the damage and asking for help. Volunteers for cleanup and theatre work are also always welcomed. To find out more, email rockawaytheatre@verizon.net Photos by Dan Guarino

Good Try If you’re playing sports or a game any kind, the last thing you want to hear is someone telling you, “nice try” or “good try.” Or anything like that. Words will not make you feel better if you missed that putt by six inches or missed a jump shot with time running out. Or your jenga blocks fell after you got a little daring. Who, in the history of anything, has ever replied, thanks, I appreciate that, it really was a good try. Thanks for making me feel better. You might start losing your hearing with old age but one

Page 5

THURSDAY, MARCH 18, 2021

thing that comes in loud and clear is the friggin’ and most unwelcome encouragement of others. I’d much rather have my friends say, “damn, you suck” than good try or you’ll get it next time. I’d rather them just be quiet. Hold the consolation. Don’t tell me somebody looks good in the casket. Good try is acceptable only if it’s packed with sarcasm and intended to make you feel worse. I was pedaling along on my e-bike (yea, it’s got a battery just in case that Rockaway wind wants to get tough with me. And

I don’t want that wind saying, nice try). I was with Rock Horan who was biking on his lounge chair or whatever you call those things and it is similarly battery powered. Some guy, dressed like a superhero, (much younger than us but too old to be dressed as a knock-off Spiderman) pedaled next to us and said cheerily enough, “You guys are cheating,” an obvious reference to our bike batteries. We said we’re just smart or we have to hurry to get to the blue plate special. Haha stuff back to him. And then he said something like, I really admire you guys. That’s great. And then he sped away. What the hell? Admire us? I wanted to put the bike in high battery gear and chase this patronizing dude down and yell, “Hey, nice costume. Good try.” Admiration? For what? Next thing people are gonna be cheering me on for getting food in my mouth. The exchange reminded me of the story my bother told me. He met a longtime friend at a bar and the guy, who was a walking resume, said something patron-

izing and my brother called him on it. “That was patronizing, man.” And the guy responded, “I know.” Which still makes me laugh. And at least the guy didn’t damn him with faint praise. I figure eternal damnation means getting praised in the worst kind of way, over and over. Do you like my haircut? Uhm, yeah, it’s interesting. You’re tall for a short guy. There’s that old commercial in which Mary Lincoln asks Honest Abe if her butt looks big in that dress. Abe hesitates, which was his downfall, of course, but he did not damn with faint praise. If he had said “Not as big as it looked with that other dress” he might have never made it to the theater. You work on something, a paint job, an essay, knotting your tie. You ask somebody what they think and they give you a “It’s fine.” It’s fine means one thing and one thing only: it could be better. This column. Yeah, I know, it’s fine and not bad for an old guy.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS SET FOR POLAR PLUNGE The Special Olympics is hosting its Annual Rockaway Polar Plunge this year on Saturday, March 20 from 10 a.m. til noon. Casey Maloney, Director of Development for Special Olympics New York tells us, “So this year we are having the in-person event on Saturday, March 20 but this year it will be a little different. We have changed the location to Beach 94th Street and have strict COVID guidelines. “Per NYC, State and CDC rules,

we will assign time slots for all teams and participants in order to keep the amount of people at the event less than 50 at any given time. Masks are required at all times, sanitizing stations will be set up, and PPE will be provided for those who need it. “For those who aren’t comfortable or aren’t able to attend, we have a Virtual Option as well! Interested participants can videotape themselves doing their own (safe) version of the plunge and

send it in to be combined with all other Virtual Plunges in one fun video to be sent out and posted after the Plunge. We are so excited to have this event this year and support the Athletes from our local community. We need more PPE and larger facilities to get our athletes training and competing again. This event and your

support will help our athletes get back in the game.” For more details on the in-person and Virtual Plunge and to register, please go to PolarPlungeNY.org and select Rockaway Queens Polar Plunge. The event has been a big fundraiser and goes a long way in helping Special Athletes.

CROWLEY RAISES $ FOR RUN Former City Council Member Elizabeth Crowley has raised $127,813 in her first fundraising filing period, including $72,363 of small-dollar donations eligible for New York City’s 8 to 1 matching program. She raised well above the minimum necessary to qualify for matching funds and is on track to reach the contribution matching limit. According to Crowley, the prospective candidate for Queens Borough President, has raised more money than any of her opponents’ first filing periods and has done so without accepting any contributions from real estate developers. In addition, Crowley has also received over 500 individual small-dollar donations from Queens residents in fewer than 30 days, demonstrating significant grassroots enthusiasm. Donovan Richards beat Crowley in the November Election but that race was just to fill the remainder of Melinda Katz’ term who left to become the Queens District Attorney. Richards is the current Queens Borough President and is seeking a full term.

***** Advertiser alert: The summer’s coming and so is The Rockaway Times Summer & Community Guide. This great Rockaway tradition somehow made it to print in 2020 thanks to the commitment and faith in Rockaway of so many of our merchants. The Summer Guide will be a great way to welcome back normalcy! Or something close to that! ***** Half steam ahead. As of this Friday, March 19 dine-in restaurants will be permitted to increase capacity to 50%. Covid cases are falling and vaccine numbers are rising. Both are happening as the weather turns nicer. ***** Walgreens and CVS pharmacies in Rockaway and Inwood/Five Towns are offering

the Covid vaccine for those eligible. Just go to their respective websites and search for available times. We tested both sites and found open slots. ***** Nicole Russell runs Last Dragon Pizza, an out of the home business, she’s been operating since soon after Hurricane Sandy. She and her Arverne business got great coverage in last Sunday’s New York Times. You can try the tasty dishes Nicole serves up by finding her on Instagram. ***** Andy Byford used to run the MTA and now is running the equivalent in London. He told The City publication, “I’m now given the space and leeway as a transit professional to do my job. I can do my job for the people of London without interference.” Byford was slamming Cuomo before the Nursing Home scandal took hold and before sexual misconduct allegations started becoming almost everyday occurrences.

***** Speaking of Cuomo and the MTA (bridges and tolls), we have our own gripe: Cuomo hurried to reinstate the toll on the Marine Park Bridge a few weeks after Hurricane Sandy. Pretty much the only ones using the bridge were volunteers and people who’d been forced to relocate to Brooklyn and elsewhere and had to go back and forth. ***** We don’t follow the polls too much and don’t know what fundraising milestones mean exactly in the mayoral race but again we have to tip our hat to candidate Kathryn Garcia who not only made Rockaway a campaign stop, but seems to be all over the city. We’re guessing she’ll surprise people when it’s primary time. ***** And speaking of the primary, 10 candidates will be running for the District 32 City Council currently held by term-limited by Eric Ulrich. Joann Ariola and Steve Sirgiovanni look like

the only Republicans running (Ulrich is a Republican). Dem candidates are: Michael Scala, Kaled Alamarie, Raimondo Graziano, Balla Matias, Ruben Cruz, Shaeleigh Severino, Helal Sheikh, Felicia Singh and Kenichi Wilson. ***** There will be a free Community Naloxone training class in the main lobby of 107-10 Shore Front Parkway on April 1, starting at 6:30 p.m. The 100th Precinct-sponsored class will teach how to recognize the signs of an opiod overdose and how to administer nasal naloxone. ***** The National Park Service has selected Riis Bazaar, LLC (Riis Bazaar) for a five-year lease for use of facilities at Jacob Riis Park. Riis Bazaar was one of several applicants that submitted proposals in response to a recent Request for Proposals. Riis Bazaar will offer a selection of year-round and seasonal food service along with a variety of music, events and pop-up vendors.

Local State Officials On Cuomo Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer-Amato joined other women legislators supporting a call for a State Attorney General investigation into the sexual harassment allegations against Governor Cuomo but the group did not go so far as to demand his resignation. Many state officials, including U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirstin Gillibrand, have called upon Cuomo to step down. When The Rockaway Times asked Amato for a statement, she sent the statement issued by the women legislators: "In response to the allegations that have been lodged against Governor Andrew Cuomo, we called on the Attorney General of the State of New York, Letitia James, to investigate these matters. "We believe that the Attorney General will exercise due process and expedi-

ency in her deliberations. We continue to support our Attorney General, the first women, and the first African American woman to be elected to this position, as she launches this investigation. We request that she be allowed the appropriate time to complete her investigation rather than undermine her role and responsibility as the chief law enforcement officer of the state of New York. "Our democracy demands that we be diligent and expeditious in our search for truth and justice. This matter deserves no less degree of care. "We collectively request that all complaints involving sexual misconduct or otherwise be made with the Attorney General of the State of New York. We respectfully want to honor all situations simultaneously and believe the Attorney General is best equipped to do just that." Assemblyman Khaleel An-

derson, representing most of Far Rockaway, joined State Senator James Sanders Jr. in demanding Cuomo resign. State Senator Joe Addabbo Jr., so far, aligns with Amato and has resisted the call for Cuomo’s ouster. In a statement Addabbo said: “I have always believed that elected officials are to be held to a high standard of ethics and conduct. Given the circumstances surrounding the Governor’s actions relating to the handling of nursing homes during the COVID pandemic and the recent allegations of inappropriate sexual harassment, I support the current full independent investigation by the Attorney General to determine the facts and give the foundation for the state legislature to take proper actions, including the options of impeachment and calls for resignation. In addition to sharing the anger and frustration of

many of my constituents related to such actions by the Governor, I support a number of legislative measures, which focus on addressing the Governor’s situation, including the modification of the Attorney General’s authority to assist in ensuring a credible, fact-finding independent investigation. “Right now, my constituents and the people of New York also need for the state legislature to focus on the April 1st state budget and ensure that the vital programs it provides will continue to be funded, as well as addressing COVID relief programs and vaccine rollouts.” Although many prominent electeds have been vocal with calls for the Governor’s immediate resignation, public polling shows support for Cuomo. In a Siena College poll released on Tuesday, New York voters (50-35%) say Cuomo should not resign, at this point.

Winner of Poseidon’s $500 Cash Prize RAFFLE TO BE ANNOUNCED THIS FRIDAY By Bert Sanders

The Rockaway Mermaid Brigade’s raffle to help support the small businesses that have sponsored the parade is coming to an end this week. In a rare official press release from Poseidon’s Parade’s official press secretary (and new mama!), Alex Cannon professionally states: “Friday night, March 19 at 7:30 PM TUNE IN on Instagram LIVE (@TheGingerLadd) to “Rendezvous! An Intimate Lounge Show” hosted by Poseidon’s Prom Queen @TheGingerLadd and her Prom King, @TheMisterLadd for the announcement of the winner of our Poseidon’s Proprietors $500 cash prize raffle! We are so grateful to the many local businesses that have shown our little parade such enormous support over the years, and we are proud to try and give back in a small way as we make our way out of a difficult year and into a brighter future together.

The Rockaway Mermaid Brigade would like to thank everyone, businesses and patrons alike, for their continued support and we look forward to being on the boardwalk again with you in September! Follow @PoseidonsParade on Instagram and Facebook for more updates. “ While the drawing will occur on Friday, and one lucky winner will win some mermaid cash, I will continue to share mermaid submitted reviews of the parade’s sponsors over the next couple of weeks. This week it's all about mind spirit and body, as Janet Fash provides a mind stretching review of “Ocean Bliss.” Janey Fash is Rockaway’s favorite lifeguard chief, rabble rouser, swim coach, woman’s rugby enthusiast, advocate, and conversationalist. cated on the 3rd floor of the Belle Harbor Yacht Club, with a beautiful view of the bay, is a great place to practice yoga as it has a variety of yoga classes for everyone. For those of you who think you must be flexible to participate well all of us have various flexibility ranges and you do what your body can. It improves your flexibility and strength. It also attunes you into your spiritual being - you and the universe, making you more mindful of the present moment. If you visit Ocean Bliss Yoga you are bound to find a class that suits you. For Yogis like myself, I enjoy them all. The All Levels or Vinyasa class energizes me while the Yin and Yoga Nidra does wonders in the evening to wind me down and get me ready for a sleepful night. Whether it’s Helen’s and Jen’s All Levels, Kathy’s Gentle or Yoga Nidra, Paulette's All Levels or Gentle and Restorative Yoga all offer a wonderful experience.

Paulette’s Restorative Workshops stretches and relaxes my nervous system using supports such as blankets, bolsters and blocks. It is truly transformative and healing. Each instructor brings something for all. I truly have my sister Helen to thank for sparking my love of yoga. I love using all the supports offered in the classes. It took me a while to realize that I don’t have to get into the pose like the person next to me - I have to honor my body’s flexibility and limitations. As a result, I am more flexible than ever before. If you haven’t been to Ocean Bliss Yoga, try it! Their space is huge allowing for social distance and safety. There’s something for everyone! Demand Runs High For Rock Locations By Katie McFadden

Rockaway has always been a star but now it’s camera ready thanks to Claudia Bloom of Rock Locations. For almost five years, Bloom has been a bridge between production companies and photographers who are looking for the perfect location to film, and property owners who are willing to have their space featured. And while Covid-19 paused filming at the peak, Bloom’s phone has been ringing off the hook as crews look to make Rockaway a part of their story. After moving to Rockaway in 2015, it wasn’t long before Bloom saw its potential as a place that movie, television, magazine and other film crews might find ideal for filming or photoshoots. Since launching, Bloom has connected with a number of homeowners and businesses and now offers more than 100 properties as potential filming locations, including nearly 40 homes, nearly 70 businesses, and even houseboats, vehicles and pets that can be used for shoots. And despite Covid-19 changing the way filming is done, Bloom says Rockaway has become an even more desirable spot for crews to seek out sets. Bloom says Rockaway has always had its benefits when it comes to filming, with the biggest draw being the beach. “I had one crew guy that had a surfboard in his car and ran out to the ocean right after the shoot,” Bloom said. But Rockaway has much more to offer. Being part of New York City makes it convenient, but it offers things that popular filming locations like Manhattan and Brooklyn do not, like more parking in the offseason and a quieter atmosphere without the constant background noise of sirens, horns and other city sounds. Though she was once asked if she knew the schedule of when planes fly over houses. When coronavirus became the star of the show, shutting down the film industry nationwide, the future of Bloom’s business was up in the air. “I

was panicking. I thought we might not come back,” she said. Yet she also used that time of panic as a time of productivity. “I started doing research and got on Zoom meetings with producers and art directors and photographers to figure out how this would impact our business,” Bloom said. She also completed a Covid-19 Production Infection Control course and is now certified. The preparation came in handy and the panic subsided when filming was able to resume. While she lost a gym, a houseboat and an office due coronavirus-related impacts, Bloom says most of her locations remained and when cameras started rolling again, Rock Locations was a hot commodity. “When we were allowed to start reshoots in July as New York City entered Phase 4, my phone did not stop ringing,” she said. Bloom started to realize that in this new Covid world of filming, Rockaway had become even more desirable. “This has been my busiest year,” Bloom said. “Covid has been horrible in so many ways but for my business and industry it’s been amazing.” Needing to keep social distancing in mind, film crews are now opting for more spacious locales rather than cramped quarters of Manhattan or Brooklyn. After all, it’s not common to find backyards or front porches to spread out on in those boroughs. “People can’t hang out like they used to. With social distancing, crews have to be more careful about spreading out and most of my homes offer that space,” Bloom said. Bloom is mostly a one-woman show, but her website designer Alexandra Lorrae helps list the many properties on RockLocations.com and provide updates in the monthly

newsletter. The updates are aplenty. Since filming started up again, Bloom has connected some local locations for some exciting projects including a photoshoot for Esquire Magazine, reality shows for TLC and USA, a Comedy Central video about voting and music video shoots. In many instances, the shoots required using multiple locations in town. For instance, in the TLC show, “Long Lost Family,” which tells the story of a reunion of an adopted woman with her birth mother who lives in Rockaway, Bloom connected TLC with a home in Rockaway Beach and another in Belle Harbor to get the scenes they needed. When new show “The Rev” on USA needed a backyard to film in, they reached out to Bloom who found them the perfect backyard space, but it was in the back of a home in need of repair. So she found them another home just three blocks away that could pass as the home where the backyard was, so they could film the front of it. “My website designer was surprised by how everyone fakes everything but it’s just the magic of TV and movies. I got two jobs for that one shoot,” Bloom said. Other shoots have reminded Bloom that Rock Locations is making meaningful connections. “We had a music video shoot in Rockaway Beach for a British band called The Doves, which had stopped per-

forming and recently made a comeback. A few weeks after, a manager of one of my locations who has his own film company came up to me and said, ‘You did the Doves? Oh my God, the Doves are back!’ He was so excited, and it just makes me feel like I brought something special here and the video turned out awesome. It takes a while for works to be released but I’m so proud of what I see,” Bloom said. Going forward, Bloom hopes to make even more meaningful connections and hook a major company or star-studded production. And she’s gotten close. Bloom says she almost booked a house for the recent filming of “Only Murders In the Building,” which brought Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez to town, but they ultimately created a home on a set that had all the components they needed. She’s also had people from HBO, Netflix and Disney come to scout locations, but hasn’t landed them yet. But Bloom is hopeful. “I have this fantasy that I’m running from location to location, overseeing multiple locations in one day. That would be really cool,” she said. Grandparent Scam Surfaces Again An elderly relative phoned me the other day, concerned that she had been the target of an attempted scam. Somebody claiming to be her grandson had called to report that he had had a car accident while driving and was in the hospital, and she needed to send money immediately for his care. My relative told the caller to call his mother, hung up, and immediately made a call herself to the grandson’s mother. She discovered that he was safe at home watching TV (and didn’t drive in any event). The call was a scam, a type of elder financial exploitation that targets the elderly and attempts

Page 17

THURSDAY, MARCH 18, 2021

to scam money out of them. Luckily, my relative felt there was something off about the call and didn’t fall for the fraud, but many people do. Called the Grandparent Scam, this is an old scam that has once again become prevalent. Because this latest fraud hit close to home, I thought it would be helpful to alert readers to it. In this scam, a caller claiming to be somebody’s grandchild (or niece or nephew), or calling on their behalf, states that they’re in trouble for some reason (accident, sickness, lost wallet or passport, stuck in a foreign county, etc.) and in immediate

need of money. Many of these calls are made in the evening or nighttime hours, as some elderly may be less clear minded then. Sometimes the caller uses an actual name taken from publicly available information, such as through social media, or they will wait for the panicked victim to say the child’s name. The scam caller will urge the “grandparent” not to tell Mom or Dad because they don’t want to get in trouble. Ultimately, the scammer will ask the grandparent to send money via a method that’s hard to trace, like gift or reloadable cards, Western Union or MoneyGram, or by mailing cash. Once you send funds in this way, they’re gone for good, with few exceptions. During the COVID pandemic, the FTC and FBI have seen an escalation in the number of grandparent scams, as scammers prey on victims’ increased vulnerability and concern for their loved ones’ health and safety. If you suspect that somebody calling you (or texting or emailing) is a fraudster, slow down.

Never act hastily. Contact the family member whom the caller says is in trouble, or a trusted person within the person’s circle, and check out the story. You can also try to verify the caller’s identity by asking them a question a stranger wouldn’t be able to answer. If the caller claims to be a police officer, verify the person’s identity and info they’ve given you by calling relevant law enforcement directly. Do not provide any information. Hang up and report the call to local police, the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint (or by calling 1-877-FTC-HELP); and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov. For more information on grandparent/family emergency scams, visit the FTC’s site at https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/ articles/0204-family-emergency-scams and the FBI’s site at https://www.ic3.gov/Media/ Y2019/PSA190919. Spotted: Shots With A Shirt

Tedd Havlicek, a regular contributor to our Local Color feature, sent us this after getting his second shot of the Covid vaccine. We have to say that shirt he’s wearing goes well with a mask and even better on someone recently vaccinated. Way to go, Tedd!

Sander's Bills On The Move Senator James Sanders Jr. announced that important pieces of his legislation passed the senate. One bill (S664/ A5601) related to student debt would require standard financial aid award letters to include the estimated cost of repayment of all outstanding loans including expected monthly payments. Debt from student loans has continued to grow over the last two decades with an estimated $1.3 trillion in outstanding debt. The enhancements to annual financial aid award letter will provide students with detailed information on their repayment including the estimated monthly payment amount. The goal is to better educate students so they are prepared for the debt burden after they graduate. A similar program was started in Indiana University and resulted in a decrease in student borrowing of

16% in the first two years of implementation. This additional information will help students make informed decisions on their borrowing behavior by estimating their repayment options. The Senate also passed bill (S571) also known as the New York State Urban Development Corporation Act, which allows businesses to use funds received from the minority and women-owned business development and lending program for the purpose of refinancing existing debt. Another bill (S913) would amend the elder law, in relation to informal caregiver training in order to encourage the development of training and supports for older adults who are caregivers for minors. Training for informal caregivers is crucial to ensuring their success. To learn more go to nysenate. gov/senator/james-sanders-jr

PAY IT FORWARD & HAPPY SPRING! On a recent Monday, a friend went into her handbag for her wallet and it was not there. The last time she used it was on the previous Saturday in a store in the Erskine Street complex. She called the store she was in and went about putting holds on her credit cards. On Tuesday in her mailbox was a package from a woman in Brooklyn with her wallet intact. What a wonderful woman! She could have left it. She could have tak-

en it. She could have turned it in and washed her hands of it. But she took the time to go to the post office and mail it. She wanted it to get back into the owner’s hands. Maybe she thought about the reverse situation and what would be a great outcome for her. (I think that is a good thought process for when we are faced with something for which we need to take action, putting ourselves in the other’s shoes is sodium chicken broth. Let cook until meat is ready to come off the bones. Remove chicken to cool. Continue simmering the broth. (save chicken for another dish or shred and add it back to the broth) Matzo Balls (Serves: 16) 4 eggs ½ cup of oil (I used grape seed) ½ cup water or club soda (I used seltzer) 1 teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon pepper 1-1/2 cups matzo meal 1 teaspoon chopped parsley Directions: Beat eggs, oil, water or soda, salt and pepper. Stir in matzo meal and parsley Refrigerate for at least one hour. Bring 3 quarts of water to a boil. Add 1 teaspoon salt. Wet hands and form mixture into 16 balls. Drop in boiling water. a sure way of understanding and feeling a situation.) Maybe the woman had a kindness shared with her and she wanted to do something good for someone else. In any event, she spent the time to get it back into my friend’s hands. I know when we really want to do something, we find the time, no matter how busy we are. The package had a return address so my friend sent her a note along with a gift card. And knowing this friend, I’m sure she also shared some kindness with someone else - paying it forward. Paying it forward creates a chain of endless kindnesses. Little pings of good feelings and light that often come out of nowhere - unexpected, welcome and heartwarming. Imagine the interconnectedness of this phenomenon. Imagine seeing the kindnesses linked by a chain of light all through our community, our city, our nation. The next time someone does something kind for you or says something kind to you,

seize that moment and take the time to pay it forward. Happy Spring! This is a special one: coming through the last year, this week marking the beginning of the mayhem last year. Tending to one of the plants in the yoga studio that was losing some lower leaves and shooting up new growth at the top, I am reminded that we must let go of what is no longer nourishing and make way for newness and beginning. The onset of spring is a good time to contemplate this as we will soon see seeds sprouting and flowers blooming. Becoming aware of what we no longer need, being aware of the emotions that maybe rose up during this past year and letting them go. It is a beautiful time of change in nature’s cycle and it can be a beautiful time of change for us. What newness do you want to sprout? May you be happy. May you be free. May you be compassionate. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

shoreline for hands-on experiential learning. Students learned about the different forms of renewable and nonrenewable energy that society consumes every day in our first session focused on sustainable energy. In our February 26th class, after students got to know each other through some fun games, we covered topics such as the importance of conserving electricity, today's energy versus the future, how electricity is generated, and how it is distributed to homes. This month, the program is covering birding basics, where students will gain an

Do you appreciate your local environment? Do you want to learn about ways you can be an advocate for your community? If so, then join the Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity (RISE) for its latest after-school program, the exciting and free Virtual Living Classroom! This series will be running every Friday once a week from February 26 to June 25, 2021. It will consist of two different sections, one for elementary school students from 3:00 - 4:00 pm and the other for middle schoolers from 4:00 - 5:00 pm. We are covering a variety of topics starting on sustainable energy, birding basics, marine debris, the importance of pollinators, and finishing on community cooking. Living Classroom is a STEM educational science program for K-12 schools in and around the Rockaway Peninsula, where students utilize their local environment and the natural

sound. After birding, they will move onto the ocean and learn all about marine debris, what causes it, its effects on our ecosystem, and how they can help combat ocean pollution. All three of these great topics are just the beginning of this program, so stay tuned to see what our RISE educators have planned for the next series. We hope to see you at the next installment of our Virtual Living Classroom! If you are interested in signing up or learning more about RISE's Living Classroom program, please visit our website at riserockaway.org/events.

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

The U.S. government created two programs to care for Americans as they get older. In 1935, FDR created the Social Security system, which was intended to be a source of income for people once they retired. In 1966, the Johnson administration created Medicare. Prior to that, most Americans did not have health care plans, especially once they left work and retired. Both programs had a similar design, namely that workers would fund their accounts through payroll taxes while they were working and draw on the accumulated savings once they retired, much like a deferred compensation savings plan. Predictably, politicians couldn’t help but act like politicians. They decided to tax Social Security payments as income (originally the benefits were not taxable) and use the accumulated funds in these programs for purpos-

Page 33

RX Needed For Healthcare Systems es other than those they were originally designed for. This is one of the main reasons why both programs are facing insolvency in the near future. Also, as the country ages, the number of those still working vs. those who are retired is changing. For example, Social Security originally had 16 persons working for every one that was retired. By 2024, that ratio will be 2:1. Medicare solvency is one of the most challenging health care issues facing the Biden administration. Last November, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projected that the Medicare Hospital Insurance (HI) Trust Fund, which pays for hospital, nursing home, home health, and hospice services provided under traditional Medicare Part A and Medicare Advantage plans, will become insolvent in 2024. The insolvency date is two years earlier than anticipated in 2016 because the COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread unemployment and financial losses.

The Medicare HI Trust Fund is funded mainly by payroll taxes and the taxation of Social Security benefits (Part B is funded by payments made by recipients). The CBO projects that the trust fund’s obligations will outpace revenues by 1% per year over the next decade, resulting in a deficit of $758 billion. Without an infusion of funds, by 2024 Medicare will be unable to fulfill its obligations to more than 68 million individuals and will only be able to pay 83% of its bills for hospital, nursing home, and home health services under Part A. Given the magnitude of the Medicare HI Trust Fund shortfall, a combination of revenue increases and spending cuts may be necessary to avoid increasing the financial burden on beneficiaries or negatively impacting financially fragile institutions like rural hospitals. But it is all but certain that hospital systems will be impacted, as will post-graduate medical training programs. Most peo-

ple are not aware that Medicare pays almost 100% of the costs associated with medical intern, residency, and fellowship programs, making these programs revenue streams for hospital systems. These programs will likely see financial cuts at a time when they are needed most – there is a nationwide shortage of physicians. Medicare payroll taxes will likely be increased, especially for high income earners. Proposals for reducing Medicare outlays by reducing benefits are often raised, however given that Congress and the White House are now controlled by Democrats, benefit reductions are unlikely. What is likely given our current political realities are tax increases. Either way, action must be taken by our elected representatives as insolvency is something that cannot be allowed to happen. ROCKIN & STOCKIN By JP STATHIS

Two things that always come to mind when I think of March are St. Patrick’s Day and March Madness. March is always a weird month as it’s a transition from Winter to Spring and these two events are the pipeline that get us through to the other side. While it was sad to see Rockaway’s St. Pats parade was cancelled, it was great to see the tradition continued by Mark Edwards & AOH division 21! It is nice to see local businesses start to reopen and I am sure everyone will be looking forward to celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. What has been rocking this month is College Hoops! Watching the Big East and other conference tournaments brought back a feeling of normalcy, even with fans being minimal, there was still lots of action on the court. My beloved Saint John’s came up short in OT in their first

game against dreaded Seton Hall. Shoutout to my mom, my sister and my cousins who are St. John’s alumni. St John’s basketball program continues to improve and has become fun to watch again. Their roster looks promising for next year which I guess is some consolation to a disappointing performance in the Big East Tournament. Also the #1 powerhouse Villanova Wildcats and their diehard fans were stunned with an upset by Georgetown who is coached by Patrick Ewing, and ended up going on to win the BET. Ewing gets another Big East championship at MSG, his first one since he was a player in 1984! If the conference tournaments were a preview of what the NCAA tournament will bring then this will hopefully be a March to remember, as last year was definitely a March to forget! Okay enough Rockin, let’s get down to Stockin. U.S. stock

markets reached new all-time highs in February and then faded due to rising bond yields. The S&P 500 is now up 13.1% since the election. To put in relative terms if you invested $1,000 in Nov 21st in the S&P 500 that would be worth $1,131 today. Oil reached a new 52 week high, and an oil trader I know said he thinks fas prices could hit $4 a gallon this Summer. Ouch! Bitcoin and cryptos also continue to make a lot of noise as the digital asset has crossed 60K recently, meanwhile Gold hit an 8 month low. Many ask what is Bitcoin, and the simplest way I can describe it is that it is a digital currency which is extremely volatile and can decline just as sharp as it rises so buyer beware. With Covid restrictions miraculously lightening up and a new round of stimulus checks I would not be surprised to see the markets keep advancing for a bit and then as they say “Sell

in May Go and Away” which is a theory which says NOV-APR has stronger growth so May is a good time to take profits. There have been a few days here and there which were huge selloffs, and as I stated previously, those are days which create buying opportunities to initiate or add to your existing positions. No one I know ever became wealthy from stashing their money in a savings account. It’s about as useful as a piggy bank. So stop saving and start investing!

Free Classes From RTC! By Dan Guarino

Get ready to drop your stress and also tap your toes as the Rockaway Theatre Company offers two new classes as part their ongoing virtual workshop series. All classes are free of charge. RTC recently launched Stress Management, with Elsie Maio, on Tuesday nights from 8 to 8:45 p.m. The course, all done via Zoom, runs 'til April 20.

Maio is known as the “SoulBranding” guru and is the founder of Humanity Inc. Her class asks the question, “Wouldn’t you like to quiet your mind to come to a place of your own well-being?” The techniques she imparts are meant to teach students to access their own “inner wisdom as a path to reduce daily stress.” RTC has also just launched A Step Ahead: Great Broadway Choreographers. The new course takes a deep dive into the groundbreaking dance arrangers and directors who have taken the art form to whole new heights It is offered on Mondays, 7 to 8 p.m., from March 22 to May 10. Instructor/actor/writer/director Fred Grieco will use his background and wide knowledge, along with video clips, music, backstage stories and history to bring “the choreography experience” to life. A theatre veteran, Grieco’s work has included stints onstage in Rockaway, on Staten Island and elsewhere. His previous RTC Zoom classes in-

clude the successful “Musicals That Changed Broadway” and its ‘Part Two’ sequel. Elsie Maio has also successfully taught online stress management for the Rockaway Theatre Company before. Students can register and join in at any time even if classes have already begun. Sign up for both classes is free and open to all. Simply send your name to rockawaytheatre@verizon.net and note which class or classes you’d like to take. You will be sent the Zoom link for each. Both Maio and Grieco’s classes, along with a previous virtual tap dance course taught by dancer/actor/ theatre production all-arounder Adele Wendt, are part of RTC’s outreach during this time of pandemic. The theatre itself, located at Fort Tilden, is currently closed due to Covid restrictions. RTC is using this time to go forward with internal renovations and upgrades. Right now they are awaiting re-opening guidelines from the city, state and federal authorities under which they operate. Until those guidelines are set, they are holding off announcing any plans for dates and titles for future productions. Far from waiting in the wings though, they have continued their mission of keeping high quality theatre alive and well through classes, online children’s workshops, virtual performances by individual members and spotlight highlights and backstage peaks from its archives. For more information on RTC and to explore its programs, go to www.rockawaytheatrecompany.org and/or visit them at Rockaway Theatre Company on Facebook. In the meantime, the (virtual) show goes on! Garcia And Yang Aim To Cut Red Tape Democratic candidates for Mayor of NYC Andrew Yang and Kathryn Garcia announced they were jointly committing to cut red tape and eliminate bureaucracy for small businesses to reopen in New York City. The candidates will bring together tech stakeholders to design and build an app for Garcia’s single City Permit for small business to reopen. As part of this commitment, Andrew Yang endorsed Garcia’s plan to create one universal City permit for small businesses that is accessible by smartphone, instead of having to navigate dozens of City agencies. In June 2021 – no matter which candidate receives the Democratic nomination – Yang and Garcia will convene a panel of business owners for feedback on what challenges they experience in the permitting process. Based on that input, the City will launch the

“NYC app challenge” to solicit solutions that will update and streamline all major City services into a one-stop-shop NYC Business portal. The updated portal will ensure that any new or returning business will receive a response within one month of submitting an application and allow applicants to see real time status and feedback as their materials are reviewed. “Today, to open a restaurant in New York you need to get permits, file applications, undergo reviews, get inspections and receive licenses from up to 8 different agencies before you can sell a bowl of soup,” Garcia said. Yang added, “Anyone who has ever had the passion to build a small business in New York City knows how hard it is just to get started. I am proud to support Kathryn’s proposal to end this madness.”

Wrestle Talk WRESTLING QUESTIONS By Eric Jayden

This week we get into some of your questions that were sent in! The first question of the week comes from Barbra H. in Rockaway Park and she asked "Do pro wrestlers make their own wrestling attire?" Good question Anna, most wrestlers do design their own ring gear and some hire designers to make there ring gear. Ring gear can cost anywhere from $50 to $250 with some ring gear costing close to $1,000 to make. It all depends on the wrestler’s character and story they want to tell. Also, it’s a matter of how much money they want to spend. The second question of the week comes from Jonathon S. in Far Rockaway who asked, "How often do Pro Wrestlers work. What does there work schedule look like?" Excellent

question Daniel. You have Independent Wrestlers who mainly work shows on Friday, Saturdays and Sundays with some traveling cross-country or overseas. For pro wrestlers who are signed to contracts with major league companies their schedules can vary with weekday TV tapings and doing shows on the weekends. Pro wrestling can be a sevenday-a-week job at times and it requires a lot of traveling and a lot of time away from home. The third question of the week comes from Josh F. in Arverne By The Sea and he asked "I used to be a wrestling fan I love the combat and action but now wrestling seems more boring and theatrical." Another great question, wrestling throughout the years has gone through many different changes. We have gone from the Character Era to the Attitude Era to what you see today

and I call the Theatrical Era. We are seeing more of Hollywood influences in the product. We are seeing comedy and movie action. We are seeing a lot of things that come out of Hollywood. I do feel that wrestling needs to return back to its original roots of having a stage fight between two individuals. The fourth and final question of the week comes from Henry D. in Bayswater and he asked, "Can professional wrestling benefit from having a Union represent them the same way they represent Professional Sports Players?" Harry, this is a question that has been asked many times and here is my opinion on the subject. Professional wrestlers can benefit from having union representation. Having a union negotiate contracts that include Salary, Work Schedule and Benefits would

greatly help the individual wrestler. Right now, the power is more with the organization and not the performer and I believe with union representation this balance could be equaled out to benefit both. The fifth question comes from Alan A. in Breezy Point and he asked, "Do you see AEW becoming the number 1 company in Pro Wrestling?" To be honest Alan right now, no. Although it has the potential of becoming the #1 promotion, a lot factors play into. They are doing well in the ratings so all I can say let's keep an eye out on AEW and see how they continue to develop and market their product. Keep sending those questions into eavil183@yahoo.com you can follow me on Facebook @ ericjayden and on Twitter @ followthebadguy Have a Great Week!
