Community House Property In Contract – Business Stays Open SURPRISE BUYER After numerous people on Facebook speculated about the Community House being sold, the owner Kelley Brooke said: “The building that Community House sits within is in contract. It’s purely a real estate transaction. The restaurant will remain.” Brooke made the public comment to quell rumors and assure employees and those who have booked or are planning to book parties that the venue will remain open. A picture of a postcard from a realtor enhanced the rumor run. The card, with various real estate listings, was mailed to some residents in the area. As is the custom with real estate ads, some listings are marked “in contract.” The property at 101-19 Rockaway
Beach Boulevard was pictured with such a caption. It did not have any further information, so online speculation took off. The property has been for sale for some time, but Brooke was exasperated by the online chatter because she did not want the bar/restaurant/catering business trying to operate under a cloud of conjecture. The postcard was produced by The Cotrone Team of B6 Real Estate owned by Paul Massey, who co-founded the powerhouse real estate group, Massey Knakal, and for a brief time was a mayoral candidate. In papers filed with the City, Massey submitted a “sundry agreement,” which included his agreement to market 10119 Rockaway Beach Boulevard and receive a commission of
six percent for doing so. In this agreement, Massey identifies the Marcal Group as the buyer with a purchase price of $3.9 million. If the Marcal Group name rings a bell, it should. Marcal is redeveloping a good part of Beach 116th Street just off the boardwalk. The condos on the west side of Beach 116th will be completed this year. Townhomes on Beach 117th will follow. Marcal also bought the long-abandoned theater on the east side of the street and its adjacent parking lots.
Mark Caller, CEO of Marcal, confirmed the deal and added, “Yep. We like the Rockaways.” He did not elaborate about plans for the property especially since it is still just “in contract,” the one signed on February 25. In the meantime, Kelley Brooke says, “Business as usual,” and the party(s) will go on.

Bummed At 30
Man, these young people. What is wrong with them? Back in ancient times, we had fake draft cards and birth certificates. Kids now are trying to get fake AARP cards. They feel old and are going to retreats to deal with it. “What can death teach me about life?� and “What are the unexpected pleasures of aging?� Not surprisingly, these deep thoughts are not mine. They are actually sections in a bookshelf at a resort called the Modern Elder Academy. I hate when you can’t tell if
you’re having your leg pulled. Pause. What the hell does pulling a leg have to do with faking me out? But I digress. The Modern Elder Academy, according to various press profiles, caters to the over-thehill gang, mostly in the tech field. And over-the-hill means 30-year-olds and up. Apparently, being a tech wiz is a short-term thing. You reach 30 and your coworkers are looking at you like, what are you doing here? You were born in the 1980s? Ew, gross.
The new kids on the block, Generation Z, are making millennials feel invisible and moldy. I don’t know a Gen X from a Gen Y never mind a Gen Z but it appears that some young people don’t like other young people at all. The 30-somethings are in the crosshairs. Most of these newly decrepit 30-somethings have made big bucks in tech but are now made to feel like moth balls. Some millennials embrace this. Some young dudes dye their hair gray and only listen to Springsteen. Others need the Academy. The Academy offers suffering 30-somethings coping workshops, salt-air yoga and access to a shaman. Which is all fine and good but what they really want is guidance from actual old people, true elders. Yes, the true elders who became invisible long ago, who wake up at 5 a.m., after getting up three times during the night for bathroom trips. If you’re reading this, probably someone like you. It’s nice to be needed, isn’t it? The crusty old 30-somethings want to pick the brains of people who have injured themselves in
Page 5 their sleep. They want wisdom from people who look forward to a dull evening. They know there’s a lot to learn from people who call the phone company to talk about fees. “What are the unexpected pleasures of aging?� the depressed 30-year-olds ask. The beauty of the three o’clock happy hour, of course. There are other things, but we forget what they are. The mid-life crisis occurring at younger and younger ages only means the competition for spots in the Modern Elder Academy will be tougher to come by. Oh yeah, you have to apply and the leader of the place, a self-described, “social alchemist, disruptor, sage,� says, “It is a competitive process to be accepted.� And you know what that means. Rich parents of 30-year-olds will start bribing admissions officers to get their depressed, antique kids into the Academy. The scandal will follow. The kids weren’t depressed at all, the parents just wanted them out of the basement.

I’m here to protest failed homeless policy, lack of affordable housing and bad leadership,” Ulrich said. We fear this might backfire. If Banks were to cave, it might send a signal to others that the only way to change things is by going to the personal homes of officials. You don’t like transit, bike lanes, parking

All Rockaway reps signed on, well except Michele Titus. Ulrich Brings Homeless Issue To The DHS Head’s Home By Katie McFadden
“Banks must go,” “Solutions not shelters,” “Audit DHS” were just a few of the chants being yelled on Monday night by protestors outside of the Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn home of Steven Banks, Commissioner of the New York City Human Resources Administration/Department of Social Services, who oversees the Department of Homeless Services. The crowd included not just residents of Rockaway, but those from communities across the boroughs, that are fighting back against homeless shelters being placed in their residential neighborhoods. Taking a page from the book of other Queens neighborhoods, like Maspeth and Sunset
Park, that led similar protests in front of Banks’ home in 2016, Monday night’s protest was spearheaded by Councilman Eric Ulrich. With protests falling on deaf ears of DHS representatives at meetings, and with Mayor Bill de Blasio spending time traveling across the country for a suspected presidential run, Ulrich decided to bring the fight directly to the home of the person who heads DHS with a crowd that insisted, “Banks must go.” “Steven Banks is the worst DHS Commissioner in New York City history,” Ulrich said. “Tonight, more than 60,000 men, women and children will be sleeping in a City shelter— and thousands more on the streets and subways. Creating new shelters has done nothing to address the homeless epidemic. We need real permanent housing programs for the people who need it most.”
It is believed Commissioner Banks was not home at the time of the protest and he never made an appearance to address the crowd of about 50. Councilman Ulrich spoke before the crowd, saying, “We’re not protesting homeless people. We’re protesting failed homeless policies and bad leadership coming from a mayor who’s spending more time running for president in Iowa and New Hampshire, and no time tending to a crisis in the City of New York. We have a homelessness crisis. More men, women and children are sleeping in our shelter tonight than on the day Bill de Blasio took office, and where is he? Running for president, everywhere else except where he needs to be,” Ulrich said. “What we want are better solutions. Real, proven solutions to help homeless people get out of the shelter system. We shouldn’t have to be building
more shelters. Building more shelters would be like building more jails if crime went up. We would say, ‘No, we’re not going to build more crime, we need to lower the crime rate.’ In this instance, we need to lower the homeless population. We gotta give people a path out of the shelter system, transition them into permanent, affordable, stable housing, so they can live independently, with dignity, close to their community, not warehoused in abandoned buildings throughout the City of New York.” Ulrich also accused de Blasio’s friends of benefitting from the crisis. “The mayor and his friends in the real estate community, some of whom are donors to the mayor’s campaign are profiting and making tens of millions of dollars off the suffering and misery of people Continued on page 9

fallen on hard times. It’s wrong and we’re here to stand up and defend those homeless people who are being taken for a ride.” At previous protests, and in televised interviews, Ulrich has referred to shelter developers and even the nonprofit service providers for these shelters as “poverty pimps.” Although the term didn’t come up at Monday’s protest in Brooklyn, while it was taking place, NY1’s Errol Louis did bring it up to Mayor de Blasio, who was answering questions on “Inside City Hall.” In response to the term, de Blasio responded, “He should be ashamed of himself for saying that. It is a very nasty, divisive phrase that denigrates the work of organizations that are trying to help people. I mean, one of the leading providers of shelters is Catholic Charities. Is he accusing them with that phrase? So many organizations that help people who are down on their luck and we want to help them
get back on their feet, we want to help them back to a productive life—most people who are in homeless shelters now are working families.” In regard to placing shelters in residential neighborhoods, the mayor told Louis that he’s confident that he’ll win any fight against them. “We’re going to prevail because we have the right to find a location and put it in place without going through the normal extensive review process,” de Blasio said. However, the mayor said he’s willing to compromise on exact locations. “We want to make adjustments according to community concerns. You know, a lot of times we’ll propose a site and people will have a concern and I’ve said to many Council members and others, give us a different site and if it works, we’re very open to a better alternative. But what’s not up for debate is whether we’re going to have shelters in every kind of community that needs them.” The mayor also reiterated that the shelters are being placed in neighborhoods where the
homeless people are coming from. At the last Community Board 14 meeting, representatives from DHS told the crowd that there are more than 1,000 homeless people in the community. However, those who live and work in Rockaway, who attended Monday night’s rally, have no plans to back down on the fight, which is not just against the proposed locations, but the shady dealings behind the system. “Developers seem to have an impressive clout with DHS and the Mayor’s office. What developer wouldn’t prefer $3,500 per apartment to DHS versus $1,200 per apartment to HPD? It’s obviously time for an investigation and audit of DHS,” John Cori, President of the Rockaway Beach Civic Association, said. Michael Valentino, a Rockaway property and business owner, was one of many residents that rode a bus provided by Jerry Rea, to join the Brooklyn protest. Valentino said he chose to partake not just for
Page 9 those in Rockaway, but those across the city facing similar issues. “I came to support my fellow residents of Rockaway and all these people in the city that have to put up with homeless shelters in their communities. There’s no reason for it. It’s not that we’re not sympathetic to the crisis of people that need affordable housing, but to put them in a warehouse in the middle of a community with hundreds of kids and schools all around it is not benefitting anybody, especially the community and especially people that need housing,” he said, adding that he disagrees with the way the mayor is addressing the issue. “The method that the mayor is using to go about this is a mess. It’s just not the way to do it. We didn’t have this problem with prior administrations. He’s doing something wrong.” That message will continue to be sent on Sunday, March 24, at another protest led by Councilman Ulrich on the steps of City Hall. The protest will begin at noon. All are encouraged to attend.

Parks Dept. Gives Summer Season Updates By Katie McFadden
On Monday, March 18, at a Community Board 14 Parks Committee meeting, the NYC Parks Department staff provided some updates on issues relating to the 2019 summer season. Although he hasn’t officially started his role as the newly announced Rockaway Administrator, Eric Peterson, as well as the new Queens Commissioner for Parks, Michael Dockett, joined committee members, residents and other Parks staff to listen in on the updates. A big change that is ahead is the additional sand being placed in the heavily eroded areas of Beach 92nd to Beach 103rd Streets. According to CB 14 member John Cori, the Army Corps of Engineers expects this replenishment to be complete by June 1, in time for the beach season. A pre-construction meeting will take place this week, where more
updates will be given on when this project is expected to start. There is a chance the work will be done before the official Memorial Day weekend beach opening. It is expected that this year, the official beach opening ceremony will take place at Beach 17th Street, as it hasn’t occurred in this area in seven years. Councilman Donovan Richards requested that it take place there to celebrate the news that some more beaches will be open to swimmers in Far Rockaway this summer. Last summer, Parks began a pilot program of positioning garbage cans, between Beach 73rd and Beach 106th Streets, by the beach entrances and exits, rather than in the middle of the beach, in the hopes of making it easier for Parks employees to pick up the garbage, to eliminate garbage spread around the beach by seagulls, and to give beachgoers the opportunity to dispose of their trash as they were leaving the beach. The program was a suc-
cess, so the pilot will now become a permanent move. Parks is getting some new equipment to help maintain the beach this summer. This week, they are acquiring two new beach rakes to keep the beach clean, plus a new front loader. There will also be new equipment to help level the beach, which was left with drop-offs of three to four feet in some areas due to erosion from winter storms. Speaking further on the effects of the storms, a Parks representative said much of the fencing on dunes was damaged. Parks will be waiting until the Army Corps of Engineers replenishes the sand in the highly-eroded area, before replacing the fencing. Last year, at the request of the community, Parks added Mobi Mats for beach access to 24 new blocks, including downtown, which hadn’t had any, but was much needed in areas with a heavy senior population. According to Parks,
there haven’t been any new requests for Mobi Mats for this summer, but they will try to accommodate future requests. A handrail is expected to be installed at a staircase on Beach 10th Street that leads to a Mobi Mat there to make it easier for the seniors to access the beach. To help things run smoothly this summer, Parks is bringing in additional personnel. While there are usually five Parks Enforcement Patrol sergeants assigned to the beach, this year, a sixth one will be brought in. The sergeants are those that are able to issue tickets and make arrests for things such as illegal vending, unleashed dogs on the beach and other issues. In addition to the sergeants, there will be roughly 34 City Season Aid employees hired to patrol the sand and monitor closed beaches. Many of these updates and more are expected to be discussed further at the April Community Board 14 meeting.

Hold DOT Accountable Dear Editor, I would propose that the problem with speeding on Beach 61st Street is entirely a police problem. It is a police problem primarily because the NYPD has a policy of not taking law enforcement action against city agencies and employees. I’m afraid that this may sound pedantic, but the specifics are important. Let me be specific. Section 1680 of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law requires that traffic planning must conform
to the U.S. Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices and the state Supplement. The MUTCD requires that traffic planning be performed by engineers. Article 145 of the NYS Education Law makes it a felony to practice engineering without a Professional Engineer’s license. But under Commissioner Polly Trottenberg’s management of the NYC Department of Transportation, she doesn’t believe that it is important to comply with the MUTCD. Instead, under the NYC DOT, “city planners” design traffic patterns and then licensed PEs are ordered to sign off on the plans. And many of the finished installations don’t even include legal signs. So why haven’t the police made arrests at DOT? Of course, the police could give out more speeding summonses on Beach 61 Street, but I am sure that residents would not be happy even if all cars were only traveling at the legal speed limit of 25 mph. The problem is that DOT’s non-planning has diverted

arterial traffic to a residential street. They have done much the same thing in Far Rockaway, creating massive traffic jams from the city line to the Freeway, diverting traffic into Bayswater and past the Redfern Houses. The solution is incarcerating DOT management. NYPD do your job! Eugene Falik Dayton Appreciation Dear Editor, (In response to 3/14/2019 article: “Fed Up DBP Shareholders File Lawsuit Against HPD”) After reading about the problems the residents are having at 8800 Shore Front Parkway, I would like to say on behalf of my own Mitchell-Lama cooperative (located at 7600 Shore Front Parkway), our annual inspections have always been quite thorough. Not only did the inspector come back to make sure my smoke and carbon monoxide detectors worked properly (the first inspection revealed that my battery was dead), but they also provided the initial
carbon monoxide detectors when the City began requiring them in multiple dwellings, a few years ago. Now, the residents are not knocking each other over to run to be elected to the board of directors; after all, I know that it is a thankless job. But it is the shareholders themselves that are the office holders. I am unclear as to what grounds they would have for removal if the alleged nepotism, re: the apartment list has been going on for more than a year. I do know that an independent third party oversees the voting process. In conclusion, I would just like to say that I truly appreciate my Mitchell-Lama cooperative and my family has lived in the apartment for over 30 years. The management office has always been helpful and professional, and I just want your readers to be aware that obviously all Dayton Park coops are not equal. As Sandy survivors, many know that apathy is not an option when it comes to championing our beautiful community. And, while Rockaway has seen a great deal of development in the six years since Sandy, there’s still a long way to go. Strength in numbers through active community involvement will be key to the next six critical years if the community wishes to achieve the goal of a 100-Year Storm Protection plan throughout Rockaway. And, if knowledge is power, Belle Harbor Property Owners Association (BHPOA) President Hank Lori provided residents with a lightning bolt of information at the March 19 BHPOA meeting to fuel the ongoing fight with the city and state to protect and enhance our quality of life across
the peninsula. Iori provided an essential update on the meeting with the State Department of Environmental Conservation and the United State Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) regarding storm protection on our beaches and community safety, in general. While plans for dunes from Beach 9th to Beach 149th are funded, Iori identified many additional community concerns to be considered and addressed. For example, beach access areas with ADA compliant ramps from Beach 126th to 149th need to be developed with community input. And while USACE has funding for the construction of groins from Beach 90th to Beach 123rd, Beach 123rd to 149th are presently “groin-less,” so the community needs to keep the pressure on elected federal officials to be vigilant in their pursuit of

the protection of these beaches as well. Shockingly, USACE does not have plans for bayside protective measures from Beach 116th to 149th. The existing bulkhead should be elevated several feet to prevent future floods. Storm drains need to be maintained on a regular basis. A sea wall needs to be installed from the groin on 149th Street to the bay. The bayside area from 116th to 108th Street needs sea walls to prevent flooding, as well as many other bayside areas from 108th Street to Far Rockaway. Naturally, ground water testing equipment and pumping systems should be installed as well. Finally, Iori reminded the community to vehemently voice their disapproval of the Williams NESE Pipeline. He made it clear that it’s not simply an unnecessary imposition upon the community, but it will cause dire
consequences regarding sea level rise, as well irrevocable harm to beloved marine life. Thankfully, JK Canepa of Sane Energy shared some positive developments in the fight. Firstly, all of our local elected officials are on board, signing a letter to Governor Cuomo opposing the pipeline. Next, Sane Energy, along with 350Brooklyn, Food & Water Watch, New York Communities for Change, and SurfriderNYC released a technical report proving what many of us expected: the pipeline is completely unnecessary. Says Canepa, “Coming at a time when National Grid is threatening moratoriums on new gas hookups if the pipeline isn’t built, the report exposes the falsehood behind these scare tactics and other justifications Williams and National Grid are using to get their risky pipeline approved.” Some findContinued on page 15

A dogmatic but true medical statement is that there are no trivial elevations of liver enzymes. In other words, every case of liver enzyme elevation needs to be explained. Causes of liver enzyme elevation can be sorted into disorders of cholestasis and disorders of hepatocellular (liver) injury. Cholestatic disorders, where bile is prevented from leaving the liver by a blockage of the common bile duct (gallstone in the duct, pancreatitis, or tumor), tend to cause elevations in alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, and gamma-glutamyl transferase, or GGT. Hepatocellular injury (hepatitis) raises levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). The most common causes of liver enzyme elevation are alcohol use and toxicity, medication side ef-

fects, and fatty liver disease. “Significant” alcohol consumption is defined as more than 21 drinks a week in men and more than 14 in women, over a period of two years or more. Consumption of alcohol within five days of a routine blood test may cause enzyme elevations. When evaluating enzyme elevations, a detailed medication history must be obtained. Focus should be placed on recently-added medications, dosage changes, medication overuse, and non-prescription medications and herbal supplements. Medications that may cause enzyme elevations include statins (usually seen within three months of beginning therapy), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs like Motrin, Aleve, etc.), anti-seizure drugs, antibiotics, anabolic steroids (i.e. testosterone), and acetaminophen (Tylenol). Tylenol overdoses may be fatal be-
cause of liver failure. Risk factors for viral hepatitis should be investigated. These risk factors include IV drug use, blood transfusions, unprotected sexual contact, organ transplantation, a history of work in a medical facility, and a history of travel to areas where hepatitis A or E is endemic (i.e. Southeast Asia). Fatty liver disease is extremely common in the U.S. Estimates are that one third of the U.S. population, or 100 million people, suffers from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. It is more common in men than women and is present in 80 to 90 percent of obese adults, two thirds of adults with type 2 diabetes, and many people with hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol). It is also seen to some degree in 40 to 70 percent of obese children. Hereditary hemochromatosis, a disorder of iron overload, is the most common inherited liver disorder in
adults of European descent. It causes cirrhosis but, if caught early, is very treatable. Diagnosing it can be challenging, however, as it causes no symptoms until late in the disease. It does cause liver enzyme elevations, even early in the disease process. Early symptoms may include severe fatigue, joint pains, and, in men, impotence. Later on, it causes the appearance of the classic triad, known as “bronze diabetes,” with cirrhosis, diabetes, and darkening of the skin. When you visit your doctor for a routine checkup, as all adults should, be sure to ask the doctor to include a liver enzyme panel. But be sure to abstain from alcohol for at least three days beforehand so as not to cause an accidental and misleading enzyme elevation. By Beth Hanning Still Shocking So, news reports in the past few weeks reveal that more than fifty people have been arrested for their involvement in a cheating scandal. Of course, it probably became more of a news story due to two celebrities, Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman, being two of the people charged. As with most news stories these days, everyone had to go to social media and post their opinion. Even I did…for a few minutes. I deleted my post because I got insulted by commenters asking me: How could I be shocked at this scandal? Of course, as a high school
teacher for over twenty years, I understand that the college admissions process is not always fair. I taught a young man who had a 65 average and went to an elite academic college to play football. He eventually went on to play in the NFL and win a Super Bowl. What Lori Loughlin and other parents allegedly did was Photoshop their children’s faces onto athletes’ bodies and create fake athletic profiles for them. As of last week, according to The New York Times, multiple low profile sports coaches were fired for taking bribes and giving names to their ad-

I even tried to explain that I knew some improprieties went on, but explained about what I wrote above and was still insulted…One person apologized because he did not read the post clearly enough, another person did not see the “live under a rock” post as an insult. Something I truly try not to be, and I do not usually comment on stories I am not educated about. The SAT and ACT proctoring system needs to be overhauled. I believe children should only take it at their school building with teachers who could identify them…but would some teachers then want to assist their students? I do not know the answer. The first Seaside Dock was built in the late 1850s. After the Civil War (1861-65), it was greatly redesigned and improved to welcome larger steamboats to the peninsula. In later years, five more docks were built at Beaches 104th, 105th, 106th, 108th and 116th streets. Boating traffic successfully increased to the Rockaways. Here we see the Grand Republic Steamer at the Seaside Dock. Today you would be looking northeast from the corner of the sewage plant over Beach Channel Drive towards Beach Channel High School. I write this on St. Patrick’s Day evening after having had the pleasure of being a guest at a gathering complete with live Irish music at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club this afternoon. And I thought how great it is to gather together and feel safe and happy in a community. People tend to shed their differences, have a good time and wish each other well. It is simple fun, relaxation, connecting to others. That is what community is about and we are fortunate. I can’t help think of people coming together, only having to be torn apart by violence and acts of hatred. How is this happening more and more in our times? What it speaks to is the power of intention— whether it be good or bad. While we may have differences on issues, violence and hatred, as a means of getting a point of view across, can never be the way to go. If we can get everyone to rally around this notion, perhaps this violent streak will stop. Hatred spurs violence. Violence spurs destruction of everything human. The concept of “interdependence” speaks to this. In The Wisdom of Forgiveness, the Dalai Lama explains in an interview: “The theory of interdependence allows us to develop a wider perspective. With a wider mind, less attachment to destructive emotions like anger, therefore more forgiveness. In today’s world, every nation heavily interdependent, interconnected…; We’re not talking about the complete removal of feelings like anger, attachment or pride. Just reduction. We can
say that the theory of interdependence is an understanding of reality. We understand that our future depends on global well-being. Having this viewpoint reduces narrow-mindedness. With a narrow mind, we’re more likely to develop attachment, hatred. “When human emotions come out of control, then the best part of the brain in which we make judgments cannot function properly. Of course, some conflicts, some differences, will always be there. But we should use the differences in a positive way to try to get energy from different views. Try to minimize violence, not by force, but by awareness and respect. Through dialogue, taking others’ interests and then sharing one’s own, there is a way to solve the problems.” If all sides took an open, aware approach with the intent to get to some sort of understanding, hatred would be reduced. I think we have to ask about motivation and result? What motivates someone to carry out an act of violence? The opposite of interdependence, the opposite of unity, the opposite of peaceful love. Destruction ensues, people are stunned and hurt, and the cycle of hatred gains momentum. We must hope for this cycle to stop through thoughtful contemplation, wide mind, respect for each other—from all sides. We must unite in heart and mind to expunge the hatred from our world. If not, what could be the outcome? May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Be Careful What You Wish For? I grew up at a time and in a neighborhood where little old ladies in black dresses waited on line at the local bank to get their interest stamped in their passbook savings accounts. The local bank, being smart about marketing to young people, worked with local schools to open savings accounts for kids. This taught some great lessons: the value of saving, how interest compounds, how a bank works, and most importantly—why those old neighbors made sure they got their interest stamped. For a kid growing up in the sixties, it was hard to imagine that so many of those people waiting on line had lived through the Great Depression and a World War. They grew up not trusting the institutions around them and needed to see in black and white what was rightfully theirs. On Fridays, the line sometimes snaked around the block! As a precocious kid, it seemed to take forever, and if you missed a week, the bank simply calculated the interest and stamped two weeks worth the following week, so why wait? As I grew older and got jobs, it became necessary to go to the bank and make deposits with checks and withdraw cash. Of course, if you needed to withdraw money, you needed to get back on that line, preferably not on a Friday, and fill out a withdrawal slip and present it to the teller. Those tellers
seemed all-powerful too, sitting behind cages looking down at you. It was a great relief when the ATM came along and now with a simple slash of a card through a reader and a password, I could deposit money and withdraw cash at any time of the day and not just between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. And more importantly, I didn’t need to stand in line and talk to anyone—I could simply deal with the machine. I grew up watching The Jetsons, and while I knew flying cars didn’t exist yet, the fact that they were on TV meant someone was at least thinking about them. So, getting money from a machine in a bank seemed perfectly OK to me. Many years later, when I began working at the New York Stock Exchange, I was frightened to go down to the floor of the Exchange because it looked and felt like chaos. I became frustrated that I couldn’t simply go to that same ATM machine and buy and sell securities just like I was able to deposit and withdraw cash. I understood that a message from the ATM would have to go to a brokerage firm (Glass-Stegall was still in effect), and that a brokerage firm would have to send the order to an Exchange where it would end back up on a floor and finally executed. I also understood that that process could never happen fast enough for me to get an answer while stand-

ing in front of the ATM. And while I loved the institution I worked for, I really wanted the immediacy of an answer from the screen in front of me. Decades later, when I was tasked with managing the NYSE’s transition to automated trading, it never occurred to me that when finished I could get that immediate answer that I had indeed bought or sold a security. I remembered the people waiting in line to get their interest stamped when the Market dropped almost 1,000 points one day in 2010 and then immediately rebounded right back up, and I thought, is this what I really wished for so many years ago? Technology has changed the way we see the world in so many ways. We are not children of the Great Depression and have not lived through a World War, but we have lived through market crashes in 1987 and in 2008, and we have lived through
9/11 and the ensuing wars, but we still trust technology and believe that if we miss a week on line, that the system will simply calculate the correct interest and post it. I have often thought about all the jobs that technology displaced, the tellers, the traders, the trading floors, the old savings banks. And as a generation, we are less and less capable of interacting with other humans, but I am still looking forward to flying cars. I mean that was the promise of The Jetsons, right? Or will this simply be another case of being sorry for what I wished for. I hope not this time, I really want to drive a flying car!

New Rockaway Parks Rep to Step Up in April
The next Rockaway Administrator for NYC Parks is stepping up to the beach. Last week, Parks announced that Eric Peterson will be taking on the role previously held by Portia Dyrenforth. Peterson, called a “lifer Parkie,” will be stepping into the role starting in April, just in time for the busy summer season.
However it seems he’s getting a head start on learning about the issues that impact Rockaway. Peterson made an appearance at Monday’s Community Board 14 Parks Committee meeting to hear about some updates for the 2019 summer season and concerns from board members and local residents. According to a press re-
lease from Parks, sent on March 14, Peterson has been working with the Parks Department for 20 years, joining the force right after college. According to the release, Peterson has a long list of accomplishments while working for Parks. “Eric began his career in the Marketing & Special Events office, where he oversaw various citywide events, and helped to bring back the Winter Festival in Central Park. He then served as Director of Manhattan Special Events & Permits, overseeing everything from rallies to ribbon cuttings, and softball to sukkahs. Eric joined field Maintenance and Operations (M&O) as a Parks and Recreation manager in Brooklyn in 2004. His assignments there included Districts 1, 3, and 4, Pools, Requirement Projects, ADA, and staff development. Eric re-
opened the derelict McCarren Pool for performances and festivals, including the Beastie Boys’ only major public show in Brooklyn. In 2008, Eric joined Capital as Chief of Staff for the Deputy Commissioner. In 2009, Eric returned to Manhattan and M&O, helping to open the High Line, and then moved on to become Deputy Administrator of Randall’s Island. Working with Park Administrator Aimee Boden and leadership of the Randall’s Island Park Alliance (RIPA), Eric developed an effective, integrated public-private partnership, drawing on assets from Parks and RIPA to seamlessly provide a quality park experience to patrons, improved environment, and a fulfilling workplace for the staff. At Randall’s Island, Eric has brought online more than $150 million in capital improvements, and developed state of good
repair replacement cycles for synthetic turf and other capital assets.” Peterson’s educational background is also impressive. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology and International Studies from Yale, and a master’s degree in Urban Studies from Queens College. He has also completed CORO’s Leadership New York and Parks’ Master Gardener program at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Peterson lives in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Previous administrator, Dyrenforth, was also a Brooklynite, but quickly adopted an understanding for Rockaway’s unique issues and worked with locals to bring new events to the peninsula, like Poseidon’s Parade and the Rockaway Times Sandcastle contest. Peterson has big shoes to fill, but we wish him good luck and success in this new role.
