Rockaway Heads To City Hall to Demand ‘Solutions, Not Shelters’ By Katie McFadden

“Solutions, not shelters” was the major message shouted on the steps of City Hall on Sunday, March 24, as residents, led by Councilman Eric Ulrich, brought the homeless shelter protest to the Mayor. Dozens of residents who are concerned about the proposed shelter for up to 120 homeless men, at 226 Beach 101st Street, left the peninsula and traveled to Manhattan early on Sunday, to protest not only the proposed shelter, but the Mayor’s handling of the homelessness crisis across the city. Many who took an early ferry, first stopped at the Department of Homeless Services headquarters to protest, before continuing on to City Hall. Sunday’s protest came a few days after Councilman Ulrich led another protest outside of the Brooklyn home Steven Banks, who oversees the Department of

Homeless Services (DHS). Councilman Ulrich explained the purpose of the multiple protests, saying, “We have so many problems in this city, but homelessness is front and center and what we’re here to demand is a better plan from this adminis-

tration, one that actually helps people get out of the shelter system and into permanent, affordable and stable housing. We are not here to demonize or vilify or attack people that find themselves in that situation. What we are trying to do is force this issue

upon the administration, so they come up with real solutions that help us address this homeless population in the city.” Ulrich continued, “What we’re here to protest are failed and hopeless homeless policies that are costing the City of New York billions of dollars and are providing no transition, no gateway for people who’ve fallen on hard times to transition out of the shelter system and into affordable and permanent, stable housing. What we should be spending the taxpayer money on are real solutions, not building 90 more shelters throughout the City of New York. What we want are solutions, not shelters.” The crowd responded by chanting the phrase. Rockaway Beach Civic Association President John Cori, reiterated another message that Continued on page 3

has been made in regards to the homeless crisis—that it’s time to audit DHS. “We have fought for our beaches, we have fought for our boardwalk, we have fought for our quality of life in Rockaway and the big issue we have today is with Steven Banks and his ill-advised idea of putting 120 men on to 101st Street in Rockaway. The problem is there’s only about 70 people that live there. There are 4,000 kids who go to school within 1,000 feet, some within 501 feet. The community has not been told about it. There’s a lot of corruption going on within DHS. I want Scott Stringer to do an audit and I hope that he does it and we find out a lot of nasty stuff about DHS because there’s a problem when a person can go to HPD and rent out their apartments for $1600 a month and they go to DHS and rent them out for $3500. We want Scott Stringer to hear us. You want votes in the future? Then you give an audit of

DHS for the Rockaway community,” Cori said. Noreen Ellis, president of the Rockaway Civic Association, spoke on some of the possible solutions to the homeless crisis and why Rockaway’s proposed shelter is not a good idea. “Some things like the affordable housing components can be used, but these are not the solutions the city is coming up with. They’re coming up with paying $4000 a month per person and beating these people down so that they don’t feel good about themselves and they are preying on the communities. We already have vulnerable populations in our communities with adult housing and everything else. We are recovering from Hurricane Sandy. Our businesses are just rising. We have one hospital on the peninsula that is already burdened. We do not have jobs. We do not have anything, but yet some developer has partnered with some provider, who had partnered with DHS because it is all lucrative to them, but not to the community and our quality of life,” Ellis said.

Belle Harbor Property Owners Association President Hank Iori spoke of how the priority of the city should be to protect Rockaway, which is still vulnerable after Hurricane Sandy. "After all of this trauma that’s occurred in our community, why would they come and decide to put 120 homeless men in a location close to any schools, in a shopping area that’s just getting on its feet and trying to make a go of it? It just doesn’t make any sense. We have to stay focused on storm protection for the entire community. Once we get that resolved, we can talk about these issues. If you’re setting up a homeless shelter for men, you need guidance counselors there for them, you need to help with training, you need to help with getting them jobs. We’re a very caring community. We need to see that things get moved forward properly. This is very poorly thought out. The location is terrible. The cost is astronomical. It makes no sense to us,” Iori said. Local Eddy Pastore also touched on some solutions and

Page 3 said that the blame for the crisis falls on more than just the city. “As much as this blame for this homeless situation falls on these steps and the mayor, it also falls on the governor because the governor and mayor should get together and maybe bring back Section 8 vouchers that the landlords were happy to take and not the voucher system they have today, where the landlords are afraid to take them, where you don’t even need to be working. Landlords are afraid to take people in that are on the fringes because if they can’t get them out when they stop paying, they’re there for months and months. There are solutions. There are things that the mayor and governor can do to solve this problem. By taking these people and hiding them in these communities in warehouses, they’re just warehousing people. It’s ridiculous,” Pastore said. The protest concluded with some more chants and a final message from the crowd as they broke out into song, singing, “We’re not gonna take it, anymore.”

When walking into Rockaway Beach Boulevard’s new taco joint/juice bar, Te Quiero, your olfactory organs will immediately be tickled with the cornucopia of spices Chef Milley Manzur is simmering for his beloved tacos. And while waiting with your mouth watering, owner Lizbeth Palomino will woo you with one of their deliciously satisfying fresh juices or smoothies. Whatever you pick, one thing’s for certain—after leaving Te Quiero—you’ll be satisfyingly exhaling, “Te quiero,” which in Spanish means, “I want you,” or “I love you.” Te Quiero, located at 111-14 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, just opened its doors last Friday, March 22, and according to the owners, the response has been amazing so far. Palomino, 26, said, “We’ve only been open for less than a week, and people have been continuously streaming in, curious to see what we are serv-

healthy food and drinks.” When asked what was the catalyst that motivated her to open Te Quiero, Palomino, who’s of Colombian descent, said, “Last summer, Milley and I went to Cuba, where we stayed at an Airbnb. The hosts gave us a taxi driver named Odelio, who from the moment we met him until the time we

left, gave us so much love, and treated us like family. “When we first met Odelio, as he got out of the car, he said, ‘Te quiero,’ and it was so baffling for a complete stranger to be so loving, and not even know us. We spent a week in Cuba, and really got to know Odelio. He even invited us to his house for home-cooked food. Odelio gave us so much love, and his warmth was so touchingly inspirational, that together Milley and I came up with the idea of bringing that same ‘Odelio-Te Quiero’ love back to Rockaway.” Palomino, who hails from Richmond Hill, says that she is no stranger to Rockaway, as she’s been coming to the beach with her family since she was a child. “I’ve always loved Rockaway. I grew up coming to this beach, so this community always has great memories in my heart, and I always had a positive experience every Continued on page 5

time I came here. After Sandy, Milley and I would drive over here and together we explored Rockawayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rebirth with all the new businesses like Whitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s End. It was encouraging to witness how strong this community is, knowing that I fell in love with the area as a child. So Milley and I vowed that one day, we too would plant something wholesome here and be a part of Rockawayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inspirational narrative about never giving up, keep moving upward, even in the midst of adversity,â&#x20AC;? she said. As a foodie, Palomino says she fell in love with the way Manzur cooks, and for a beach town like Rockaway, having tacos and tropical juices seemed like a perfect match. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When people come to visit the beach, tacos and juices are just right,â&#x20AC;? Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been to places where two cups of coffee cost $16. For me, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s outrageous. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not our intention or desire for Te Quiero. We want people to feel comfortable buying a drink or food that is affordable, healthy and fulling,â&#x20AC;? Palomino said. Chef Milley, who is of Dominican and Lebanese descent and also an artist, said his inspiration for cooking is his mom. â&#x20AC;&#x153;From six years old, I fell in love with cooking. I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to communicate with people, food did the talking,â&#x20AC;? he joked. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no doubt that Te Quieroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s food and vibe speak to the hearts of locals. Te Quiero offers breakfast dishes including avocado toast, oatmeal de casa and banana walnut cake. For lunch (or early brunch), tacos (three for $7 or one for $2.75) come in options of pernil (pork), chicken, steak (which is off the hook!),

Local Fableist Mikal Hameed Unleashes Folklore Noir at Rustwoods By Kami-Leigh Agard

Rockaway Beach resident Mikal Hameed is a modern-day urban griot, and after countless requests, is finally unleashing his poetic storytelling skills this Saturday, March 30 at Rustwoods. Like all mythic tricksters, Hameed craftily weaves stories into a densely knitted fabric that leaves the listener gasping as they try to untangle the message, albeit knowing that they are in for a lesson about life. For example, in one sketch, “The Boy That Could Not Read,” Hameed takes you on a trip from slavery to the 21st century, where a slave keeps running from owner to owner, continuously being branded, and all because he could not read what his master wrote on a note. The ending leaves you angry, hurt and emboldened to make change. Hameed's cunning voice intonations, with the backdrop of jazz music, and subtle props are all

compelling, leaving the onlooker breathless, asking for answers and justice. Hameed’s sketches cover a plethora of issues including slavery, love, jealousy, politics, war, human hubris and more. Plus the drama that enfolds with each word and shrewdly spaced pause, will almost make you speak up, pleading for the ending. Hameed, originally from Venice Beach, Calif., gained a reputation in the Bay Area as a storyteller/performance artist. For the debut of his Folklore Noir fable and storytelling show at Rustwoods in Rockaway, Hameed says it was all about timing. “I started doing spoken word, (a performance art that focuses on the aesthetics of word play such as intonation and voice inflection), in the 90s. In fact, that’s what brought me to NYC. I performed at the Nuyorican Cafe, the Bowery Poetry Club, Apollo Theater and with Danny Simmons. I guess you could say my

inspiration was my grandfather, who was an Army cook. He would tell these unbelievable stories, which mostly were fibs, but gave a lesson that would creep up on you at the end. I then just started doing it. It’s like you’re this trickster on stage, cunningly wrapping the audience around your finger. They want to know the ending, and once they get it, they are fired up or brought to the brink of tears. Spoken word is powerful, and I hope to encourage other artists to bring it to Rockaway. We are such a small, but wonderfully imaginative community, and I hope this show, encourages other artists to come forward,” he said. Hameed is also in the works of producing an audio book album. “This project was a longtime coming, and after a few personal setbacks, including some health issues, I’m ready to unleash my Folklore Noir trickster magic, and hopefully inspire others to do the same,” he said.

Due to standing room only capacity, Hameed’s Folklore Noir will be held at two different times, 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. at Rustwoods (97-02 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) Admission is $20, which includes delish hors d’oeuvres served by Whit’s End and a complimentary glass of wine. It looks like there’s finally some order in the court. Following many doubts due to slow progress, construction is now in full swing at the old courthouse on Beach 90th Street. Uri Kaufman of Harmony Group, which owns the building, provided some substantial updates at Community Board 14’s Economic Development Committee (EDC) meeting on Tuesday, March 26. After a lack of answers from New York City Economic Development Corporation representatives that left many skeptical at the November 2018 meeting with CB 14’s EDC, Kaufman himself showed up on Tuesday and provided more confidence that the long-abandoned courthouse is well on its way to being transformed into a medical facility on the inside, while maintaining its historic aspects. “This building has been sitting derelict since 1962, leaving Rockaway with 57 years of

urban blight, so we’re pleased to get it back up and running,” Kaufman began. He expanded on the background of how Harmony Group came to own the building, saying, “The current building was built in 1932 and sold to our company after a Request for Proposals was released, which had a lot of competition, especially with former Senator Malcolm Smith, and we were fortunate enough to win it. The project had goals, including bringing back this idle site and because of a need of medical

services with the closing of Peninsula Hospital, it was dedicated to medical use, and we will be using it for medical purposes exclusively,” Kaufman said, clearing up rumors that there may have been a hidden agenda for the building. Kaufman provided a rundown of what has happened since the plan was first presented to the community in 2017. “We got permits in 2017 and managed to complete the asbestos remediation and environmental remediation in April 2018. We

did all Phase 1 and Phase 2 testing, and everything came up squeaky clean. We’ve finished the demolition and construction is underway. We’re operating on schedule. We’ve closed on a loan from M&T Bank. We’re hoping to be done with core and shell by spring 2020. We demolished the chimney. We’ve excavated the basement. We've implemented resilient measures. We’re working on the parapets and façade, which were in a dangerous condition, so we’re getting to the core and scraping it out and using concrete to put everything back, so it maintains the look and more,” Kaufman said during his presentation. Kaufman also clarified a rumor about parts of the courthouse being used as a Pre-k, something that many still had questions about as the permits on the building still claim it will be used for this. Kaufman said this was nothing more than an oversight. “I apologize, as this was nothing but a typo. There was a time when one of the priorities was to put in UPK. We investigated it and it didn’t go through. The plans that were submitted to the Buildings Department still said medical center and Pre-K, so when we were issued a permit, it said Pre-K. We’re not building a Pre-K. We’re not putting in classrooms. The deed says it has to be a medical center. We’re planning a medical center.

We’re renting to medical tenants,” Kaufman assured the Committee. He did expand upon what would be in the building. At the November 2018 meeting, NYCEDC said there were no tenants at the time. Kaufman now says there is at least one definite tenant. “We have the first floor leased out by Fast Track Radiology,” he said, adding that this will accommodate for about one-third of the building space. Other tenants have signed letters of intent, including a chiropractor, a psychologist, a pharmacist and an urgent care chain, but have not yet signed leases. “We haven’t marketed in earnest yet. It’s still a little too soon,” Kaufman said. Signs remain on the building saying, “for rent.” Kaufman says he still hopes to get a dialysis company on board, since it’s highly needed in the area. “We are targeting dialysis companies. We’ve had an expression of interest, but nothing really firm yet. I was told by someone who works in a local nursing home that 40 percent

of the City’s nursing home beds are in Rockaway. Yet he turns away dialysis patients because they often have to go to Manhattan by ambulance for the service,” Kaufman explained. The floor was then open to questions. Committee member John Cori asked about a previously mentioned partnership with Coney Island Hospital, to which Kaufman said, “We’re still talking to them. Ideally it would be for an ambulatory surgical center.” Committee member Noreen Ellis had some concerns over parking. Kaufman explained that there will be 20 parking spaces in a lot next door to the property, plus there is an agreement with the nearby Knights of Columbus to utilize 43 spots in their lot during weekday hours, which would not conflict with nightly meetings or weekend events held at the hall. While Ellis still expressed concern, Kaufman reassured her that there would be adequate parking. “In New York City, to find a medical center with 63 off-street parking spaces is very rare. We’re gold-

Page 11 en on parking. By code, we only needed to have 12 spaces. The city doesn’t require it, because if they did, nothing would get built in New York City,” he said, adding that he expects many staff members to utilize public transportation rather than cars. Kaufman said that if the center was to get something like a dialysis company, which may require ambulances to wait by the facility, there would be future discussions on the logistics of that. Questions were also asked about entrances to the building. Kaufman explained that there would be several entrances on different sides of the building so patients could access whatever doctor they are seeing at the closest entrance. One entrance will have an elevator nearby. Some expressed concerns that there might be need for more elevators to serve patients. Kaufman insisted that only one was required, and that elevators are expensive to install, but he would consider adding more if a specific tenant requested it for their office.

Ordervision Studios Brings a New View to Youth By Nicole Taylor-Lang

Art is considered to be a universal language. It helps bring communities of all ages, races and cultures together. That is just what Ordervision Studios, founded by Jesse Lyons and Alex Seel, is achieving right here in Rockaway. Lyons, originally a Brooklyn native, has been living in the Rockaways for over two years now. He works at the Center for Community Alternatives as a reentry and employment specialist for troubled youth. His position helps young adults from ages 16 to 24 find alternatives to incarceration. “I go to Rikers Island twice a week and recruit kids awaiting trial and help them get into a program instead of doing time,” says Lyons. Seel, who currently lives in Brooklyn, is an artist, teacher and street photographer. Both invested in a studio located on Beach 96th Street to create art and then “we saw possibilities for power and affect,” said Seel.

That’s when Ordervision Studios was developed in June of 2018. They decided to create an organization where they could help troubled youth through art. Seel says, “The system tries to destroy the determination of our inner force. We explore how art can provide a new vision for our future.”

“We are currently working with four participants making silkscreen printings and want to eventually expand,” Lyons said. Silk screen printing is a process where a mesh cloth is used to transfer ink onto a material by painting it. The current participants learn not just about art, but about teamwork, ded-

ication and more. “They come from harsh environments and it’s nice to see them let their guard down and just be kids because that’s what they are,” Lyons said with a smile. Everyone plays a role, whether it’s making art, sales or even being a mediator; everyone takes part in the process. Daiquen Simmons, 19, one of the participants and mediator says, “It's been a learning process. It has helped me control my anger and learn how to deal with people in different ways.” The silk screen prints are not just printed on paper, but also are done on everything from t-shirts to tote bags. In early February, Ordervison sold their work at the Valentine’s Day market held at the Rockaway Brewing Co. The artwork was a big hit. “We almost sold out,” says Lyons. Eliminating the stigmas and stereotypes that are given to teens and young adults that have been in bad situations is one of Ordervision’s goals. Immersing themselves back into the community after being in a correctional facility is not always an easy adjustment. “We want to make them feel comfortable and bridge the gap between them and the community,” Seel said. Eventually, they want to get more participants, not just limited to people in the program, but open to all.

Tax Unprepped Dear Editor: Back sometime in early-February, you posted a small article announcing Free Tax Assistance and Preparation for Seniors whose income is less than $64,000. I happened to read it and now that I am retired, I fall into that income range and decided to save some money. Well, I am still awaiting my income tax to be completed as they were lost once and delayed on two other occasions after stating to me in early February it takes two

to three days usually. CAMBA (Church Avenue Merchants Block Association), which advertised this service, is a non-profit that offers assistance to low income residents in NYC, but their parent organization, (for lack of a better word) is NYC Food Bank. What gives them the authority to operate and perform income tax preparation, I do not know, but apparently, they have doing this a few years now. However, the administrator in the Arverne location did admit to me this is the first year they seem to be having problems. I guess I am not the only one, but I am contemplating and with good reason, in my opinion, to have them re-checked independently by a different preparer and pay the money, just to be sure they are done correctly, when I’m finally told they are done to avoid problems with the IRS at a later date. Over the past 60 years, there has been a substantial amount of evidence that shows that physical activity reduces the risks for heart disease and all-cause mortality. A few months ago, the results of the Copenhagen City Heart Study (CCHS) were published. The study looked at about 20,000 men and women between the age of 20 and 98 from 1991 to 2017 and evaluated the rate of development of heart disease in relation to their level of physical activity. Both walking and cycling were found to be associated with lower death rates. Interestingly, jogging had a U-shaped association between intensity of jogging and rates of survival. The most favorable amount of jogging for increasing survival rate was from one to 2.4 hours per week, with no more than three days per week, and

at a slow or average pace. This supported the concept, found by other studies, that a moderate amount of exercise is better than minimal or extreme amounts. The study also looked at the relationship between different leisure-time sports and overall life expectancy. Because various sports require markedly different intensities and durations of exercise, muscle groups used, types of muscle contractions (dynamic vs. static), and social interactions, they are likely to confer different effects on longevity. Surprisingly, life expectancy rates in those participating in sports activities differed greatly when compared to those who did not exercise. Also, the amount of years of life gained varied greatly among sports activities. The study found the following rates of years gained per sport activity: tennis - 9.7 years gained,

badminton - 6.2 years, soccer – 4.7 years, cycling – 3.7 years, swimming – 3.4 years, jogging – 3.2 years, calisthenics – 3.1 years, and health club activities (treadmill, elliptical, stationary bikes, etc.) – 1.5 years. The large differences in life expectancy gains were not accounted for by the wide differences in duration of sports activity. In fact, the health club group, who had the longest duration of sports activity, had the shortest life expectancy gain. The authors postulated that the observed differences in life expectancy gains were due to the differing social aspects of the various sports studied. The sports that require two or more individuals to play together – tennis, badminton, and soccer – were the sports that had the highest gains while the more individual sports, especially health club activities, had the lowest. This is in line with previous studies that have showed that

social isolation is among the strongest predictors of shortened life expectancy. Regular participation in highly interactive sports provides not only exercise but also a social support group that plays together. Belonging to a group that meets regularly promotes a sense of support, trust, and commonality, which has been shown to contribute to a sense of well-being and improved long-term health. Another study also found that social support has a stronger effect on long-term survival than any other factor, including not smoking, staying lean, and having normal blood pressure. Incidentally, roughly 40 percent of Copenhageners commute to work by bicycle. If they do so as a social group, that may explain much of what this study found. Imagining reading this book as a young person and comprehending exactly what it means to be impeccable with your word, the next three agreements would flow easily from the first and your life would be free of suffering that is caused when the four agreements are ignored. I will be sitting at my laptop texting people for ideas and then someone will either post something outrageous or ridiculous and then the 500 words flow easily. My new interest, (I wrote a little bit about it last week), is how angry many people are when posting or replying to people’s comments. A civic minded Broad Channel resident kindly asked people to slow down when

traveling through their small town and I could not believe the negative comments people posted in response to his simple request. The posts were mean and some became even racist. As I tried to read the thread, it was obvious that some posts were actually deleted due to their vitriol. The man was simply asking people to not break the traffic laws that are out in place to keep people safe. Within the last few months, two adolescents were hit by cars not following traffic laws. If you do not like what the person is

posting, simply move along. And the majority of these negative/angry posters do not have real names or authentic pictures of themselves. They have a picture of a rainbow or a dog. If you want to be a cyber bully, do not hide behind the computer screen. A new pet peeve is the person who posts on a local page or post and has a lot to say about the issue and the person does not even live in Rockaway! I started to notice this in regards to the many posts about the closing of St. Camillus. People who used to live in Rockaway and moved out of the community asking why this was not done and that was not done? I am sorry you moved out of the community. You did not support the parish. Do not come in and ask why can’t people do certain things. Many of the people who are guilty of this are people who moved to Nassau County. And let’s be honest, many of these people moved to Nassau for their allegedly better

Page 23 schools and would rather pay the taxes than the tuition, and if students do not attend a school, it cannot sustain the operating costs. That is their choice and they are entitled to that, but not to comment or complain about issues in Rockaway when you do not live here. I would not comment on a page I was not affiliated with in some way. I keep hearing many of my friends are quitting Facebook. I totally understand why. Have a good week everyone. The old paradigm of dating and relating ties in with men being the only ones who want sex, and women “giving it up” but really wanting a ring and a commitment. That doesn’t always fit. Well the Mueller Report is finally in and, much to the chagrin of our progressive liberal left, the mainstream media, academia, and Hollywood, the White House remains standing while ABC’s “Fuller House” has folded like a deck of cards with the college scandal indictment of Aunt Becky played by Lori Loughlin. Truth be told, the only 2020 Democratic Presidential bid that has crashed and burned because of the Mueller

investigation is that of porn star Stormy Daniels’ attorney and CNN fixture, Michael Avenatti, who has been indicted on federal charges of extortion, bank and wire fraud. Understandably, those liberals with a modicum of common sense are now saddened to realize that there is no longer any point in continuing to accuse President Trump of participating in a cover-up of Russian collusion by his administration. Participation in a bad combover maybe, but I think the whole Russian thing is now off the table. I guess now the progressive Democrats will have to revert to talking about those things that really matter to the American people—circumcision, farting cows, gender fluidity, doing away with the electoral college, stacking the Supreme Court, eradication of fossil fuels and, of course, money for nothing and chicks for free! Oh, wait a minute, although “money for nothing” remains part of the liberals New Green Deal, that last one, “...chicks for free” was actually policy proposal from Dire

Straits back in the 1980s...my bad! Former CIA Head, John Brennan, only a few weeks ago, told the world that President Trump’s collusion with Russia was based on evidence indicating a level of malfeasance and corruption which bordered on treasonous. I mean, c’mon, a former Director of the CIA? We’re talking some real gravitas here! Today, he is now trying to explain his egregious allegations as a result of a “whoopsie” moment, saying that he may have received some “bad information.” I think the only “gravitas” Mr. Brennan possesses are those “B” movies put on Netflix almost every other day. Perhaps NBC News, which hired Mr. Brennan as a “senior national security and intelligence analyst,” should rethink their hire of a former CIA Director who is incapable of separating fact from fiction. What strikes me as very sad and troubling, is the number of our fellow citizens who are actually disappointed to find out that an American President has been cleared of “treasonous” collusion with another country in or-

der to sway a presidential election. These are individuals who are still aghast over the fact that the hoi polloi of our country, you know those deplorable, smelly Walmart citizens, who went to the polls and chose Donald Trump instead of Baroness Von Pants Suit Hillary to be our nation’s 45th president. Sadly, the Mueller findings notwithstanding, it is obvious that these same individuals are intent on continuing to spew spurious anti-Trump rhetoric at every opportunity in an effort to bring down this administration in the hope that, truth be damned, perception in the minds of the uniformed will ultimately become realty. I think that at this point it is high time for all of us to stop cowering silently in the corner, fearful of the speech police, and call out and condemn those activists, politicians, academics, journalists and celebrities who continue their efforts to bring down this presidency with innuendo. Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

From The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance THE MORE YOU NOAA: RWA LOBBIES FOR THE OCEAN By Juli Schroeger, Youth Programs Coordinator

On March 4, Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA) Program Coordinator Juli Schroeger and RWA alumnus Isabel Colon journeyed to Washington, D.C. to lobby for NOAA funding in the federal budget on behalf of Ocean Conservancy, a nation-wide nonprofit focused on merging science and policy to protect our ocean and coastal communities. NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is a federal agency whose work encompasses everything from satellite tracking of weather systems to deep sea ocean exploration. The oceanic branch of NOAA provides funding to many scientists and programs here in New York City. New York Sea Grant (NYSG), one of many NOAA initiatives, promotes

“coastal community economic vitality, environmental sustainability, and citizen awareness about the State’s marine and Great Lakes resources.” NYSG provides funding to over 40 environmental projects and over 700 graduate students across the state, many of whom conduct their research in Jamaica Bay and the NY Harbor.

As a high school student in RWA’s Environmentor program, Colon had the chance to work with a local professor who had been supported by NYSG. Colon spent the summer of 2017 out on the marsh islands of Jamaica Bay, collecting data and investigating the mutualistic relationship between cordgrass and ribbed mussels. Colon has gone on to share her work widely, presenting at conferences around New York City and now, to members of Congress in D.C. For the past two years, the Trump administration has proposed cutting close to $1 billion from NOAA’s budget. These drastic cuts would impact everything from fisheries management to coastal resilience initiatives, and the work of many of our local scientists. While in D.C., Schroeger and Colon spoke to New York rep-

resentatives, including local Congressman Meeks, about our severe flooding events, and the importance of NOAA’s funding and programming for vulnerable coastal communities like Rockaway. In between congressional meetings, Schroeger and Colon snuck in some sight seeing, visiting the National Portrait Gallery, Ford’s Theater, and The Supreme Court. The trip was both educational and inspiring—a reminder that we each have a role to play in maintaining a healthy democracy, to stand up for our communities, and to protect our Earth for generations to come. The federal budget for FY 2020 is currently being reviewed by Congress. Remember to reach out to your elected officials if you want to ensure agencies and initiatives like NOAA continue to receive federal funding.

Page 29 Directions: Whisk lemon juice, Worcestershire, mustard, garlic, anchovies, ½ teaspoon pepper and ¼ teaspoon salt in a bowl. Set aside. Bring 4 quarts water to a boil. Add the string beans and 1-1/2 teaspoons of salt and return water to a boil. Cook until tender, about 5-7 minutes. Drain in a colander and put in an ice bath. Cut the baguette and toss with oil and pepper until it’s all coated in a medium bowl. Transfer to a 12” non-stick skillet. Cover and cook on medium high heat, stirring occasionally until golden brown and crispy. Return to bowl. Transfer dressing, string beans and half the Parmesan to bowl with the croutons and toss to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Transfer to a serving dish and sprinkle the remaining Parmesan.

Locals Were Freezin' For a Reason

Hundreds of people in Riis Park were Freezin’ for a Reason on Saturday, March 23, and not just because of the chilly spring day. They took it a splash further by jumping into the ocean as part of the 5th Annual Queens Po-

strong for the cause that will help support Special Olympics programs across the state. This year, the top fundraising team was Phelan Cold for Emily. The team took the dip in honor of Emily Hutton, a local Special Olympics participant, who died in August 2014. Hutton has been the inspiration for the plunge since it began. The team raised more than $5,000 for the event. According to the online fundraising page for the event, more than $29,000 was raised, but this number is expected to be much higher after day-of donations are tallied up. The event typically raises $50,000, which is enough to support 125 athletes in one sport through Special Olympics. Congratulations to all of the brave souls who took the dip for a great cause!

Bugalou Music Series to Feature Tom Petty Tribute Two shows remain in Season 2 of the Bugalou Concert Series after another outstanding performance in March. The BEasy Band began the night in St. Camillus Academy Auditorium before Aztec TwoStep 2.0 took the stage. Rex Fowler and friends started off with some of their own gems before launching into the Everly Brothers and Simon & Garfunkel songbooks. Highlights included The Sounds of Silence, Homeward Bound, Scarborough Fair, Mrs. Robinson, Feelin' Groovy, All I Have to Do Is Dream, and Let It Be Me. The next show in the lineup is sure to be a hit with the music of Tom Petty encapsulating the night. Tom Petty was one of the greatest songwriters in the history of Rock and Roll, and with his band the Heartbreakers, one of the greatest recording acts and live performers. His untimely death at 67, a little

over a year ago, has left a tremendous void. Damn The Torpedoes hopes to fill it as the premier tribute band to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, playing up and down the East Coast, including City Winery and Daryl's House, with their spot-on renditions of Petty's

classic tunes. They will bring their talent and energy to St. Camillus Springman Hall on Saturday, April 6. Among the songs you can expect to hear are American Girl, Refugee, The Waiting, Free Fallin', Learning to Fly, and Runnin' Down a Dream. Wine

With Sue will set the mood, as Rockaway's No. 1 party band will have the crowd rocking before Damn The Torpedoes hits the stage. Adding to the festivities will be multiple large screen TVs so you can watch the NCAA Final Four games while rockin' the night away.
