From Ukraine: Dad I’m Waiting For You
By Kevin Boyle
Kyiv is almost 5,000 miles away from New York. To us, at The Rockaway Times, it feels so much closer. While headlines and stories coming from Ukraine are shocking and scary and sometimes heartbreaking for the rest of the world, we’re getting reports a bit more personal. For more than five years, we have been working with people in Ukraine for newspaper design. It’s an ongoing collaboration and we’ve become “email friends” and some of our overseas friends have even been “spotted” wearing The Rockaway Times all over Ukraine and other parts of Europe. In this virtual, work-remotely world, it was an easy, smooth back and forth relationship. Until last week. When the world was shifting. At first, we simply expressed our concern as the news about Putin and Russia seemed more and more foreboding. Iryna, our main contact in Kyiv, wrote back and said: “Thanks for your care! I think if something terrible happens, you will be the first to know about it, and not from the news. Everything is calm here, everyone is working, but people are afraid of the worst thing - war. So far, there is an information war going on...It is difficult to imagine the actions of the aggressor country, Russia. In the Donbass, where Russia captured our territory in 2014, there was sometimes a skirmish, but new armored vehicles have appeared in the last 24 hours. Ukraine is a very powerful country with natural resources and great smart people. But unfortunately, politics
and power destroy everything ...We hope and believe in a better future!” Just one day later, (Feb 24, Ukraine time) : “The worst thing happened this morning. Russia attacked Ukraine. They bombed military facilities, we hear explosions in Kyiv.” And then just hours later after that email: “We are in Kyiv. I live on the ground floor and I have a basement. Sirens sounded recently. Explosions near Kiev. But Russia captured parts of Ukraine in the east. Our military is protecting our land. Now there are fights behind the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. We are safe for now.” It only got worse: “My heart is breaking from the situation, I cry for the dead soldiers, civilians and children. My daughter's husband is a border guard and defends the motherland... We hide in the basement, while it's quiet nearby, there are already saboteurs in Kyiv, our soldiers are defending themselves… “It doesn't fit in our heads... Some kind of surrealism…” On Monday we asked simply: Are you and your family ok? “It's hard to say in a word ‘ok’ or ‘fine,’ we now say - we are alive. My eldest daughter is 28 years old; granddaughter is 6 years old. The middle daughter is 22, the son is 13. See photos, this is how my kids sleep...never in my life could imagine that this is possible in our civilized society.” We asked if Iryna wanted to write something to The Rockaway Times audience and she was willing but understandably uncertain. “I can send you more photos of what is happening in Ukraine. I will try to figure something out and write, but I cannot promise, because we are always in suspense, and it is difficult to think.” Can we send money, would that help? “Thank you, but better support our defenders, our army. Our banks do not work, nothing works. Only grocery stores are open today, but there is little food. There is no bread. There are 300-meter lines for groceries after a 1.5-day curfew. But we are united, people help each other, my neighbor baked bread herself and brought it to us.” On Tuesday morning, we could only offer what seemed like empty words: We hope today is better than yesterday. Iryna’s response: “I would like to believe in the best, but no - every day is harder and harder.” In between all of this, Iryna has been sending us videos every time a missile strikes a part of her country, in the cities where she and her colleagues work. And we anxiously await to hear from her again. On Wednesday morning, just yesterday, her briefest message: “I’m alive.” Later, she relayed that there is an online chan-
nel that “we put labels with the corpses of soldiers on Google / Maps in Russia. Maybe at least someone will understand and see this horror.” Somehow, Iryna was still working on Wednesday: “We follow the news every minute and I work between air raid alerts.” To us, Iryna is the embodiment of Ukrainian strength and resolve. And though inspiring, we publish The Rockaway Times this week with very somber concerns and worries, for Iryna, her family, her colleagues, and the world. As for the photos she sent, two show Iryna’s family in her basement. The other (top left) is her granddaughter holding up a picture she has drawn with this message to her father fighting at the border: “Dad I’m Waiting For You.”

ShamRockaway Returns! By Katie McFadden
It’s here! After Covid cancelled last year’s Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the march is on for this Saturday, March 5. And there is plenty going on this parade day to celebrate this joyous comeback! Saturday’s parade begins on Beach 130th Street and Newport Avenue at 1 p.m. It continues down Newport to Beach 116th Street, where it will turn on to Rockaway Beach Blvd. and continue down to St. Camillus on Beach 100th Street. The grandstand will be on Beach 105th Street. The parade day will begin with a Mass for Peace and Justice at 9 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales on Beach 129th Street. All are welcome. Before the march, why not go for a run? The Rockaway Track Club is host-
ing its Parade Day 5K and Half Marathon on Saturday morning. Check in and the after party takes place at Rogers Pub on Beach 116th Street and the run begins on the boardwalk at 9:30 a.m. All runners get a t-shirt and a smoothie from Claudette’s or a Guinness from Rogers. To register, head to Rockawaytc.org The elevated Harbor Light on Beach 130th Street offers some of the best parade views in town. Watch the parade from the deck, enjoy corned beef, Irish stew and a Guinness and stick around for DJ Poppa D spinning Irish tunes starting at 4 p.m. There is plenty of musical entertainment to keep your party going. One of the biggest events each parade day is the Rockaway Rugby tent featuring popular band Shilelagh Law. On Satur-
day, the tent will be in the Sands Point Parking lot on Beach 102nd Street. Doors open at 2 p.m. The band 2 Degrees kicks off the music at 3 p.m., followed by Shilelagh Law sometime after 4 p.m. and The Narrowbacks close out the show. Note that this is strictly a 23 and over event, and IDs will be checked. The Belle Harbor Yacht Club on Beach 126th Street will be keeping the party going with Wine With Sue. Doors open at 1 p.m. and the music begins at 3 p.m. The Knobs will close out the night starting at 7 p.m. At Bungalow Bar on Beach 92nd Street, the Irish Mutts take over starting at 3 p.m. This collaboration features Bobby Butler and Jenna Baker of Indaculture, Mike Severino on drums, the Boyle Brothers and Johnny Bernstein.
Kitchen Hours Sunday - Thursday • 9AM - 8PM PM Friday - Saturday • 9AM - 9PM PM
They’ll be followed by a DJ. Throughout the day, Bungalow Bar will have brunch, corned beef specials and side alley smash burgers. The Rockaway Hotel on Beach 108th Street is getting in on the fun. Starting at 3:30 p.m., they’ll have the Canny Brothers Band in the Pool House, plus Irish food specials, drinks and more. $10 admission. Doors open at 1 p.m. At 4 p.m., DJ Paddy Tubz will be spinning tunes on the rooftop. RBQ on Beach 98th Street will have some post-parade fun with Jeff Conlon playing some Irish tunes and classic rock starting at 3 p.m. Irish acoustic perfomer Amo takes on The Wharf at 4 p.m. Meanwhile, Rogers on Beach 116th will provide some late-night entertainment with The Brooklyn Bards starting at
9:30 p.m. As we go to press, we didn’t come across any other events, but Healy’s Pub, Whit’s End and Jamesons may make for good stops on Saturday. If your Irish eyes are still smiling come Sunday, head to the St. Camillus-St. Virgilius St. Patrick’s Day Dance. The McLean Avenue Band will be playing live, plus there will be a corned beef dinner. It all takes place Sunday, March 6 at St. Camillus Springman Hall from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets are $50 for adults and are available at the St. Camillus rectory. Call 718634-8229 for info.

Among the 2022 firehouse officers are the Chief of Department Richard Bogart, Assistant Chief of Department George Conklin, Chief Engineer Edwin Wilmarth II, Safety Chief Andrew Knee, Safety Captain Maurice Sartor, EMS Captain Joseph O’Hare Jr., Fire Lieutenant James McCabe, Fire Lieutenant Lee Von Kraus and Supervising Dispatcher An-
gela Vitti. The 2022 Business Officers include President Jill Spinelli, Vice President Maurice Sartor, Treasurer Donna Bassetti, Financial Secretary Edwin Wilmarth, Recording Secretary Leon Lengor and Sergeant at Arms Leonard Cannella. Elected officials were on hand for the event. Councilwoman Joann Ariola presented her first citation as councilwoman to Chief Andrew Knee for his 40 years of
service to the department. Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato congratulated the department on 117 years of service and spoke of the ongoing fight to help the department get a new firehouse built. “We’re close. And we’re never giving up,” she said. Former Chief Ed Wilmarth III, who hosted much of the ceremony, paid homage to longtime outgoing Chief Daniel McIntyre. “Thank you, Chief McIntyre, for your service, your dedication and God knows what else you’ve given up in the name of this department and town,” Wilmarth said. Chief McIntyre then shared a few words. “I look back at all my years here at the department and 14 times as chief, and it’s a lot of time. I’ve been proud to work with so many great people in this community and department. I’ve had the pleasure of serving with some of these people for 40 years,” he said. “The people who come here Continued on page 13

BCVFD INSTALLS ITS 2022 OFFICERS Continued from Page 12 and get to this town, they sacrifice a lot. A lot have gone to other careers at FDNY and NYPD and civil service jobs, which is another feather in our cap. We’re always considered the minor leagues for FDNY and it does hurt when they go to the big department but it shows we know what we’re doing here and we can teach and inspire. Chief Bogart, congratulations. You were a very good longtime assistant chief and I relied on you a lot. To all the officers and all the members of the department, I wish you continued success.” Chief McIntyre also elaborated on the ongoing effort to get a new firehouse built for the department, a project for which he will continue to serve as a commissioner, despite his retirement. “We hope to be going out to bid again in April if things play out right. This is our last shot to get this job going and we’re closer than we’ve ever been and right now all the political help
in New York City and New York State is standing behind this project. Hopefully we get it done and next year we’ll be looking at the new building and having a good time,” he said. The new Chief Richard Bogart, a member of the department since 1995, also shared a few words. “Most people are unaware of the sacrifices that are made being a member of this department— time away from your family for calls and training and life in general—you miss out on so many things,” he said, adding that he encourages past members to consider rejoining. “This year is going to be busy. We’re going to need all the help we can get. I can’t thank my officers and members enough because without them it's just me in a funny hat looking for people to yell at,” he said. In addition to the installation of the officers, some department members were given special recognition. Chief Andrew Knee, a member of the department since 1982, was presented with a plaque
for 40 years of service with the department. “Chief Knee has never given up on the department. Andrew is one dedicated man to his family, to his friends, to his community and to this fire department,” Wilmarth said. For the second year in a row, Captain Joseph O’Hare was presented with the 2021 Lt. Kenneth Greenhold Senior Memorial EMT of the Year Award. Wilmarth thanked O’Hare for his outstanding dedication and noted that the department has been short on EMTs and encouraged anyone with such qualifications to join the service. This year’s Robert H. Russell
Senior Memorial Firefighter of the Year award was presented to Leon Lengor. “This particular firefighter did exactly what they were supposed to do. No complaints, no arguments, no stress, and a sponge ready and willing to learn absolutely everything that these guys are willing to teach him. A lot of times, he’s the first one in the door and this is a well-deserved honor,” Wilmarth said before announcing the recipient. Congratulations to all officers and honorees! Inequity Here Dear Editor: Our dream utopia is just that, a dream. While many on our peninsula thrive, there are those we struggle to survive. We, myself included, who live “uptown,” live in our own fantasy land free from poverty and major crime. We find ourselves to be lucky for where we are. The truth is according to ACS Census data 18.1% of our peninsula lives in poverty, 23% or one in five of our children live in poverty, and 20% or one in five of our seniors live in poverty. All three of
those rates are significantly higher than the state and nationwide averages. Our peninsula also faces the longest commutes to work with an average of a 49.2-minute commute, 16 minutes longer than the state average and 22 minutes longer than the nationwide average. The inequity is real, and it must be seen and addressed. What can we do to stop this inequity? Well first, stop giving donations to out of community organizations and instead donate to our community. How about supplying the community fridge on 92nd Street or creating more community fridges throughout the entire peninsula so we may put families somewhat at ease. You can also lobby our elected officials to stand up for our working families. To create better transportation so we can lower commute times, let's build the QueensLink, which would divert the M train down to the Rockaways from Rego Park. The QueensLink would save commuters 15 minutes a day, create up to 150,000 jobs, and raise personal
income up to $13 Billion. The truth is our work will determine whether people can access the most fundamental needs in life, from jobs and education to groceries and medical care to the interpersonal connections that ensure our mental and emotional well-being. We, as a community, have a duty to dismantle harmful and pervasive systems of inequity. If we fail to tear down the wall of poverty we will fail as a community and we will fall flat in the fight for racial and socioeconomic justice. Jonathan Lazo
Let Recreation Return Dear Editor: Have just read the letter from Steve Gifford of the Rockaway Beach Volleyball Committee and can understand his frustration with the National Park Service. The name of the area is Gateway National RECREATION Area. In other words, we are a "recreation" area (especially here in Rocka-
way) which covers the Rockaway Beach Volleyball Committee. The federal government seems to forget the name "recreation" and I can only tell you what they are trying to do to your group is exactly what they did to our group years ago. The Rockaway Music & Arts Council was the first group to present any event in the park starting at least 25 years ago. We asked if we could use the Parade Grounds at Ft. Tilden for a Crafts Fair on a Sunday in September, after Labor Day. They were thrilled with the idea and it was a big success. As the years went on, and we moved to Riis Park, and became a two-day event, they eventually asked for a small fee which we negotiated with them. We had our own security and cleaned up the grounds and the NPS sent around trucks to pick up the trash cans at the end of the day. To make a long story short and not bore you with the details, at

WE GET EMAIL Continued from Page 14 the last Festival that we held, the NPS wanted us to provide toilet paper for the bathrooms. At that point we laughed in their faces at such a ridiculous comment. (By the way, we didn't provide the paper, they did) And in negotiations for the following year, they came up with a rental amount of $14,000 for the use of the Riis Park, at which point we said goodbye.
The bottom line is that they do as little as possible with whatever money they get from Washington and expect the citizens to put up the rest, and now that they have moved their offices to Floyd Bennett Field, I understand they have almost abandoned our side of the bridge. I hope, Mr. Gifford, that your group is successful in negotiations with the park and that the kids have a great season. Sharon Gabriel

Team RISE to Represent at 2022 United Airlines NYC Half By S. C. Samoy, RISE Operations Manager
On Sunday, March 20, 2022, five runners from RISE (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity) will be participating in the 2022 United Airlines NYC Half, along with 24,995 other folks. It will be the first time in three years that the popular 13.1mile race, from Brooklyn’s Prospect Park to Manhattan’s Central Park, will take place. Rumbi Bwerinofa-Petrozzello, Tsion Syoum, Pete Diaz, Shafaath Khan, and Jamil Sheppard will be raising money for RISE, which was selected for the first time as a charitable partner for the half-marathon by New York Road Runners, along with other organizations whose advocacies range from the environment, animal rights/welfare, education, emergency relief, and health care/medicine to international aid, military/veterans services, research, social service, sports/ athletics, and youth/children/ family. Bwerinofa-Petrozzello, who lives in Arverne by the Sea with her husband, James Petrozzello, was born in Lusaka, Zambia, though her family is originally from Zimbabwe. By day, she is a senior director for Seramount, a diversity, equity, and inclusion consulting
firm. By night, she has been training for the half-marathon. “I have run the NYC Half in the past, and it is one of my favorite races… To do it for a great cause makes it all the more special.” Syoum, 22, who majored in environmental studies and graduated from Haverford College, will be on her way at the end of March to Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, on a Fulbright award. Her family originally comes from Eritrea and Ethiopia, and she is a first-generation American, born and raised in Harlem. “I grew up watching the half-marathon . . . and have always admired those people who took on this challenge. Living these past two years in a pandemic has made me realize there is no better time in life than the present to complete the items on my bucket list.” Diaz’s son, Oliver, participated in RISE programs, so he is “happy to run and raise some money to continue its programming for other children as well.” Diaz, 53, is married to Jee Mee Kim, also a

runner, and he is vice president of renovation at Glen Management. When he is not working, he is hiking, surfing, running, biking, and snowboarding. “I could have been the quintessential RISE kid,” he said. Khan, 20, was born in Queens and raised by a single mom. He spent most of his youth in Bangladesh and at seventeen returned to the United States on his own, through the foster care system. Khan is a senior at Frederick Douglass Academy VI High School in Far Rockaway and works three jobs: as a co-op team member at FDA VI, as an associate at Stop & Shop, and as a teacher’s assistant at RISE. “When I was told that it is a fundraiser for RISE, I was like, ‘Sign me up!’ I also want to test myself to see if I could run a half-marathon,” Khan said. Sheppard, 45, focuses on marketing programs for a global tech company and works most days a week from home. Home is Arverne by the Sea, where he lives with his wife, Fabiola,
and their two children. “My passion for running started early in life, but I didn’t run my first race until college. I’m really excited about representing Team RISE. . . . Running hard for a good cause and raise funds for the environmental and social equity programs they provide is all the motivation,” he said. You, too, can join Team RISE! We invite you to help with donations to cheer on Bwerinofa-Petrozzello, Syoum, Diaz, Khan, and Sheppard at www.riserockaway.org.

Part 1: REAL ESTATE UPDATE – HIGHER RATES The Monthly Report: The Fed has stated that they are “data driven” and the data has consistently shown higher inflation, a stronger economy, and lower unemployment. If future data show these things growing at a slower pace and inflation slows up, then the Fed will be less aggressive in raising rates. Basically, inflation has risen due to massive pandemic driven government stimulus, a surge in household spending which strained factories, and stressed global supply chains. The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the consumer price index on February 10 which increased 7.5% in January from the prior month on an annualized basis.
This was the largest increase since 1982. This data, and other recent data reinforce the Fed’s intentions (in recent statements) to begin raising short term interest rates next month. The interest rate futures market which fluctuates daily currently expects three to four rate increases this year. There could be more or fewer increases – it’s going to be data driven. For many months, the Fed has been buying many types of bonds in the open market as part of their pandemic stimulus package. This has increased the supply of money in the system. For example, when the Fed buys mortgage bonds which the banks originate (the banks “pool” mortgages together into bonds) and then sell these bonds to the Fed, the banks’ money is replenished so that they can originate more mortgages and create more new mortgage bonds. This process of Fed bond purchases is gradually ending – it’s called “tapering.” Thus the banks will be less willing and able to make new mort-
gages, since they won’t be able to sell them as easily with the Fed backing off. One of the side effects is higher mortgage rates. Thirty-year fixed rate mortgages are up approximately ¾ to 1% over the past few months as talk of Fed tapering scared rates into moving higher, and then actual tapering began. This costs an extra $220/month for a mortgage loan of 400k (using a 1% increase for this example).
Part 2: THE INTERVIEW The process for purchasing a co-op entails: finding the right co-op, negotiating a purchase price, hiring a lawyer, signing a sales contract, putting together a down payment to be submitted at the contract signing (this is held in the attorney’s escrow account, and is a standard procedure – it is a good faith deposit, usually 5-10% of the purchase price), and obtaining a mortgage. There are a few additional last steps which
For Sale
can be difficult. The board of directors of the co-op requires an application with a non-refundable fee, and financial documents from the prospective buyer. Then, they require an interview of the applicant. The board can deny an applicant without explanation. There is almost no recourse for a rejected applicant. Any rejected applicant can try to take legal action against a board. However, the chances of success are highly unlikely. Prospective co-op buyers shouldn’t be discouraged. The estimates of rejected applicants are a range of 3% to 5%. As an experienced broker, I usually have a good idea of an applicant’s chances of acceptance. I can give you a good idea of your chances beforehand. There are no certainties. I am usually accurate, but strange things sometimes happen as a result of the interview. If you are interested in buying a co-op then give me a call and I will do my best to guide you through the process. Call me. Love, Robin.

Food and Beverage Insider THE GREATEST HAPPY HOUR SNACK
By Natalie Crooks
Oysters have long been a symbol of New York City. In fact, before New York was the Big Apple, it was known as the Big Oyster. Downtown New York is essentially built on oyster shells and there was once a time when passing an oyster vendor on the sidewalk was a common occurrence. New York City even once held almost half of the oysters in the world, but centuries of pollution and over-farming completely decimated the oyster population in New York’s harbor. Despite the eradication of oysters in New
York City’s waters, New Yorkers still love their oysters and iconic restaurants across city still boast impressive oyster selections from all over the country. So why is everyone so obsessed with something that kind of just looks like a slimy mess? You have probably heard many descriptors for oysters; briny, sweet, creamy, and cucumber are all common tasting notes to use when describing oysters. Oysters, kind of like wine, often have flavor reflecting the place they come from. Things like the salinity, algae and minerality of the water all affect the outcome of the oyster. When you pop open an oyster, you will notice some liquid in the shell with the oyster, this is referred to as “liquor.” The liquor is very important to the flavor of the oyster, and you should never eat
an oyster that doesn’t have any. It’s this salty liquid that makes oysters the perfect happy hour snack. Oysters can really pair well with just about anything; Muscadet, beer, Champagne, sherry and vodka martinis are all fantastic pairings with these salty little treats. There are a few different ways people prefer to enjoy oysters. Some people like to swallow them whole, but this is generally not the best way to really enjoy all the delicious flavors that oysters have. Other people prefer to chew the oyster once or twice to release some flavor and then swallow. And avid oyster lovers like to chew them as you would any other food to release all the flavor they can get and enjoy full range of flavor that oysters present. Your oyster will also likely be served with con-
New to the market! Well loved and well maintained one family home. Four bedrooms, two bathrooms, two half dining room and eat in kitchen. Garage, shared drive, front porch w ocean views, gorgeous large back deck,
diments, oyster connoisseurs usually recommend eating them naked or with just a squeeze of lemon, but many people enjoy their oysters with mignonette or cocktail sauce, which is perfectly fine! Condiments are often designed to balance and highlight specific flavors, so play around with them and see what your palate likes best. My favorite way to enjoy oyster happy hour is by ordering as large a variety as I can get and comparing the oysters from different parts of the world. Try a Kusshi for a sweet and creamy west coast oyster or Wellfleets for a briny and minerally example. A glass of crisp white wine is usually my drink of choice with an oyster tasting, but whatever your drink of choice may be oysters are sure to make the perfect 5 p.m. pairing.

Puppy Love By Lou Pastina
It’s been a while, sorry about that, but as Austin Powers once said, “I lost my mojo, baby, yeah!” The pandemic has hit us all in ways we never would expect: getting sick, fear of vaccinations, loss of loved ones, isolation, crumbling of our city by bumbling city managers… the list goes on and on. And well, it just got too sad to write about. But there have been rays of light and hope, and I have been blessed with a double dose of puppy love. First, a beautiful and delightful grandchild, who sees everything for the first time through the eyes of a child. What a sense of wonder and fun, and I am lucky to be here to be part
of her journey, and share it with her parents and my wife, the mermaid. The first snow fall, the first taste of baby food, the awkward attempts at crawling. It brings joy. I can’t wait for the spring when we can walk around the neighborhood together, and summer, to spend time on the beach chasing seagulls. I am in love with that baby! The second dose of puppy love was with…. well, a puppy! I naively thought that after eight years of the passing of our beloved King Charles Cavalier that it was time to take the plunge again and get a dog. I remembered our tri-colored family pet laying peacefully by the fireplace, only to occasionally whine for a treat. And so, conspiring with my offspring, we hatched a plan to surprise the mermaid with a new orange and white King Charles: a 4-week-old puppy. She cried at seeing the puppy as he licked her face with unconditional

love. And we named the dog after her favorite movie, Billy Crystal’s pet calf in City Slickers: Norman! What I forgot, or didn’t remember, or maybe never knew because I was at work most of the time, was that puppies are like babies; they require constant attention and training, and don’t just lay in front of the fireplace. In fact, puppies are hard work. And after about a month it wasn’t clear if Norman was going to get permanent status at the Pastina residence. Thankfully, Norman is a fast learner, and those conspiring offspring of mine pitched in and helped ease Norman into the picture. I’m not a dog person, even though my mother had dogs growing up. They were her dogs really, even though she didn’t walk them or feed them. Her dogs were highly protective of her, nonetheless. I guess she gave them treats on the side. But Norman is different. There is something about being with a puppy that softens your heart. When I walk Norman, I am normally afraid of big dogs, but Norman doesn’t care, he goes right up to them and starts bothering the heck out of them. Sometimes they tolerate him, other times they give him a warning that says, “ok puppy that’s enough.” He is be-
ginning to understand the warnings better. And I get to talk to people I never would have talked to before. There are two others who are also in love with Norman, the first is the grandchild. She lives with cats, and dogs are a whole different thing. She loves teasing him and the day is coming when she will be walking, and Norman will be running. But for now, they both are very interested in each other, because they have never seen anything like each other. I think they will be life-long friends. The second is the mermaid. You see, the idea was that this dog would be a perfect companion for my yogic, meditating mermaid, sitting on her lap, and practicing deep breathing. At first it looked like that would never happen, because raucous puppies don’t do that. But after five months, Norman is very content to spend time with the mermaid and do the occasional downward facing dog. Many of you have stopped to ask me when the next article would come about. I am truly sorry it’s taken so long; I am hoping this begins a new streak of creativity. We have much to be hopeful about, Norman and Rowan will have it no other way.

COMMUNITY I was in Brown’s on 116th (oh, I mean Ace Hardware) and at checkout unknowingly gave a new person there $50.36 for a $4.36 sale. When she gave me back $46, I gave it back and told her she gave me too much, that I had given her $20.36 (thinking it was a $20 bill and not a $50 bill). I knew she was not long there because I was doing an exchange and she had to call someone over to help with that…she was clear-

ly trying to maintain her cool, be pleasant - yet, frustrated. She thanked me profusely for being honest. A few days later she called me to tell me that they had counted up the receipts/$ for the day and it was over by the amount she tried to give me, and they narrowed it down to that sale. When I went in, they all knew about it and the familiars “that was you?” I apologized to the kind, warm
person for giving her grief as I knew she probably got s**t from her manager. It got me thinking how great and comfortable I feel when I shop in our local places. Recognition. Connection. Kindness. All about Community. Good feelings come from these types of connections. I thought about how I feel when I enter a small local place vs a large chain store. People in the chain stores are trained in customer service and are kind and all that, but the connection is not there. They haven’t seen you before and chances are they’re not going to see you again. I understand that sometimes prices could be higher - of course locals can’t compete with big supply chains - and when there is a large family or project, it makes monetary sense to shop elsewhere. But in order to foster this sense of community, it’s important to shop locally whenever we can. Community is what brings us together in times of need, tragedy, sadness, in times of happiness.
Our locals are here to serve us and to provide what we need and want. They all spend a lot of time and effort every day. I do not underestimate the importance and impact in our community, and I am grateful. Every time I go into Ace, somebody will probably say something about the incident, and we’ll laugh– because they all know it and they all know me. Ongoing connection - not just the instant one that happens in an “anonymous” shopping environment - is fun; shopping in our local establishments creates local economic stability and community well-being. So, thank you Rockaway business owners, workers, delivery people, drivers, for keeping our community vibrant and thriving and for serving us day in and day out, rain, snow or shine. We appreciate you! May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you be compassionate. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Oven Roasted Corned Beef and Cabbage By Sharon Feldman
I didn’t measure anything//and it came out wonderful! Will never make it on top of stove again. Ingredients: 1 corned beef White or red potatoes (about 6-8) medium, quartered 4 -6 carrots, cut in thirds 1 medium size cabbage, cut in half then sliced into ½ moons 1” thick Coarse grain mustard Salt Pepper Olive oil Directions: Heat oven to 350 degrees.
In a baking pan, put the corned beef in, fat side up. Cover the top with coarse grain mustard. Then pour the seasoning package on top. Cover and bake for 3 hours. In a medium bowl, put the cut potatoes and carrots in and drizzle olive oil. Use a pinch of salt and pepper and mix to coat. Salt, pepper and olive oil the cabbage. After the 3 hours, remove pan from oven and put the potatoes, carrots and cabbage around the corned beef. Cover again and cook another 2 hours. Enjoy!! Remove from the oven and take the meat out. Remove carrots. Let the sauce cool. Using an immersion or regular blender or food processor, mix the sauce until it liquifies. DO NOT SLICE MEAT WARM. MAKE SURE IT COOLS. CUT AGAINST THE GRAIN. Reheat in gravy. Enjoy!

By Peter Galvin, MD
About Gout Gout is a form of arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the body. As the word crystal implies, uric acid crystals are sharp and pointy and, when uric acid crystallizes out in a joint, the crystals can spear the tissues lining the joint, thereby causing significant pain. Gout can cause acute inflammation in one or more joints (a gout flare) and in severe cases can result in joint damage (chronic gouty arthritis). Uric acid crystals can also form hard, lumpy deposits in the skin called tophi. Gout affects about 3.9% of the population in the
U.S., or about 9.2 million people. It is more common in men and older individuals. People with gout often have high levels of uric acid in their blood. Uric acid is a substance produced by the breakdown of certain foods and drinks, especially red meat, seafood (especially shellfish), alcohol (especially beer, whiskey, and red wine), and sugary drinks, most of which contain high fructose corn syrup. However, not everyone with a high uric acid level develops gout. There are additional risk factors that include metabolic and genetic
factors, obesity, high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, and certain medications, especially thiazide diuretics (e.g., HCTZ). A gout flare typically occurs over the span of a few hours with pain, redness, warmth and swelling in a joint because of the presence of uric acid crystals. Classically, the big toe is the involved joint, but any joint can have a gout flare. Other commonly affected joints are the wrist, fingers, knee, and ankle. A flare usually lasts for a few days and will subside fully within two weeks without treatment in most people. Over time, repeat attacks can damage the joint. A gout flare can usually be diagnosed by a medical professional using medical history and physical examination. A blood test for high uric acid is often helpful, although not everyone with a gout flare will have a high uric acid level. Fluid from an affected joint can be examined under a microscope to look for uric acid crystals. There is no cure for gout. A gout flare can be treated with anti-inflammatory medications (such as colchicine, NSAIDS like ibupro-
fen, or oral steroids). These drugs can be given to reduce acute pain and swelling and are typically given for a few days to weeks until the flare subsides. To reduce the risk of future flares, medications (such as allopurinol, febuxostat, and probenecid) can be used to lower uric acid levels. They are taken on a long-term basis and should not be started until the flare subsides (if started during a flare, they can actually prolong it). Dietary changes should be made to lessen the risk of flares. These changes include reducing the intake of alcohol, red meats, seafood, and sugary drinks. In those who are overweight or obese, weight loss significantly improves the risk of flares, as does better management of diabetes and hypertension. Diuretics should be used with caution and staying well hydrated is also helpful. Remembering Mr. Rocco He was a cut above the rest. Beloved barber, Rocco Ritorto, better known as “Mr. Rocco,” died on February 20. He was 81. Many will remember Rocco as the longtime barber and owner of the former Rocco’s Unisex Salon on Beach 116th Street for 44 years. Prior to that, he owned Man's World on Avenue X in Brooklyn. Originally from Calabria, Italy, as a young boy his family moved to Australia, then to Canada where Rocco's entrepreneurial spirit came through. When he moved to the U.S. and settled in Brooklyn, he perfected his craft of barbering and hairstyling. Rocco is described as a classy, stylish and charismatic man who never passed up a chance to play cards. He was also a very generous man with a big heart, who would help anyone that needed it. Rocco is survived by his wife, Elena, his children, Roselle Ritorto, Rocco Ritorto Jr., Frank
Ritorto, Gabriella Ritorto (and the late Mary Ritorto-Zaccagnino.); his grandchildren, Steven Zaccagnino Jr., Christina Zaccagnino and David Ally; his siblings, Joe Ritorto, Maria Mazzone, Anna Pisciuneri, and many nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass was held for Rocco at St. Mary Mother of Jesus Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn on Thursday, February 24. He was buried at Resurrection Cemetery in Staten Island.

Rockaway Shows Love For West KY Autism Community
Christine Dydzuhn and Jessica Muensterman
On Saturday, February 26, locals came out strong at Rockaway Beach Autism Families’ benefit held to support western Kentucky’s autism community hit hard by record-breaking tornadoes that flattened the region three months ago. Walker Hor-
nung, the Rock-A-Wades with Patti Blue, DJ Daryl, DJ Rhythm Selector with Rockaway’s debonair resident master of ceremonies, The Best Dressed Man in Rockaway, had attendees on their feet rockin’ for a good cause. RBAF’s Patrick Dydzuhn kicked off the event with a self-written speech about his love for RBAF and the importance of giving back. Jason Esposito wowed the crowd with his St. Patrick’s Day and Easter novelties for sale and William Hernandez sold four of his paintings, from which all sales went back towards these two talented local autistic individuals. A total of $600 was raised from the 50/50, including the winner’s jackpot, which was generously donated back to the fundraiser. Live via Zoom, Western Kentucky-based nonprofit Experiencing Autism Together’s executive director, Jessica Muensterman, got to view the show and express her thanks to Rockaway. “Thank you guys for supporting

THURSDAY, MARCH 3, 2022 ed with a thunderous round of applause, shouting, “Rockaway love!” For health reasons, RBAF founder, Kami-Leigh Agard, was unable to attend, but expressed her gratitude to everyone who stepped up to make sure the fundraiser went on without a hitch. “This event just proves that Rockaway is indeed a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. A big shout out to RBAF’s fundraiser committee members, Christine Dydzuhn, Patricia Harvey, Ivonne Colon and Rado Rafiringa for all going above and beyond the call of duty to make this event successful for our Kentucky autism family. Also, The Best Dressed Man In Rockaway is not just the best dressed, but blessed for his heart of gold. Colossal thanks to RBQ’s proprietor, John Moroney, for gifting RBAF the space to host the fundraiser; and all the musicians, who in my absence truly made EAT’s Jessica Muensterman truly feel at home. Last, but not least, thank you to Jessica for blessing us with the opportuni-
ty to show our Rockaway love for western Kentucky,” Agard said. For more information about RBAF, including events, visit Rockaway Beach Autism Families on Facebook or Instagram, and to learn more about Experiencing

Wrestle Talk WRESTLING NEWS By Eric Jayden Welcome to another week of Wrestle Talk. Let’s dive straight into the latest news! Reports are coming in that WWE Superstar John Cena may or may not be appearing at the WWE's Biggest Event of the Year, WrestleMania! Now with John Cena's current busy schedule in Hollywood, fans may be disappointed if he doesn't show up at WrestleMania. Reports have also stated that the WWE is currently trying to make it happen but nothing solid has been reached. Staying on WrestleMania, Charlotte Flair has been announced to appear to defend her WWE SmackDown Women's Championship against Ronda Rousey. In addition, WWE Women's Champion Becky Lynch will be defending against Bianca Belair. These two matches are
a definite must see! Currently, the WWE Champion Brock Lesner is scheduled to have a Title versus Title against WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns. This will be a Title Unification Match! Jumping to Game Changer Wrestling (GCW), it has been announced that AEW Superstar Joey Janela will have his annual event named after hi—"Joey Janela's Spring Break 6," where he is scheduled to face off against former WWE Superstar X-Pac. The match and show will take place on March 31, 2022 in Dallas, Texas during WrestleMania Weekend. GCW will also hold their other annual show during that same weekend called "Josh Barnett's Bloodsport" and currently scheduled to appear is John Moxley, John Hennigan and Minoru Suzuki. News is coming from former WWE Superstar and legend Hulk
Hogan that he has apparently announced that he has separated from his second wife. The WWE Hall of Famer took to his Twitter to explain that he is officially divorced. The Question of the Week comes from DeShawn M. in Far Rockaway and he asked, "I want to know if the rumors of Paige coming back to the WWE are true?" Well, DeShawn, there have definitely been rumors of a possible Paige return to the WWE and the latest of these
reports comes from current WWE Superstar Natalya who recently announced on Twitter that "she can't wait to do it again," meaning that she cannot wait to face off against Paige inside the square circle. Now, does that mean that we will see Paige in a WWE ring very soon? Well, we just don't know so we will just have to wait and see. Thank you all for sending in your questions, please keep sending them to eavil183@yahoo.com and have a great weekend!
