Amazing Grace in the Face of Tragedy By Kami-Leigh Agard

“Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; ’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home.” After speaking with Monika Wroblewski, the above words from the Christian hymn, “Amazing Grace” came to mind. A horrific twist of fate that devastated her family on Wednesday, March 22, is a powerful testimony of how their tragedy ultimately strengthened their faith, brought out a little hero and powerfully united the Rockaway community, who within minutes, came out in droves to help. In a grief-stricken voice, sobbing at intervals, but resolutely determined to tell her story and express her family’s gratitude to the Rockaway community, Wroblewski shared her heart-wrenching story of last week’s apartment fire at 102-00 Shore Front Parkway with The Rockaway Times.

“Like any other week day, my daughter, eight-year-old Julia was sitting at the dining room table doing her homework, while my son, four-year-old Kasper, was playing in his room. “Julia came to me, and said, ‘Mommy I smell smoke.’ I was in the bathroom coloring my hair, so I said to her, ‘Julia, just give me a second.’ She came back again and insisted, ‘Mommy I really smell smoke.’ So I went to her immediately. As I approached the living room, where she was doing her homework, I saw the smoke! I said to her, ‘Julia, please take Kasper and go to the hallway immediately!’ And they knew that when I said, ‘IMMEDIATELY,’ they had to drop whatever they were doing and go now! “I opened the terrace door and saw the smoke. I then closed it, and quickly called 911. My first thought was that somebody was grilling. I didn’t see the flames the first time I opened the door. But the moment I opened the terrace door the second time

and slid the screen to the side, it went on fire. I closed the door again, and grabbed a bottle of water thinking I could put the flames out, but they just got bigger and bigger. The FDNY worked rapidly to control the fire and keep it from spreading, but the inferno claimed everything in the apartment. “In minutes we were already outside the building in a police car. We looked up and saw that our apartment was gone. The police officers knew me from the 100 Precinct, where I work as an auxiliary officer, and kept reassuring me, ‘Don’t you worry, we got it.’ “They started asking me basic questions, I guess to keep me calm, yet alert. They asked me, ‘What is your son’s birthday?’ I just mentally blacked out. Being in the police car, I did not want to get emotional, I did not want to cry, so I didn’t talk. Then Julia took over and started telling the officer, ‘My brother, Kasper’s birthday is 5-16-2012. Mine is

11-17-2008. I can also give you my parents’ cell phones numbers.’ Julia is really the hero in all this. In the police car, she was trying to make Kasper laugh as he was really upset. Kasper kept saying, ‘Mommy I am going to cry, please don’t stop me.’ He cried and cried and cried. “Then Julia asked me, ‘Mommy can you call my teacher, Ms. Boyer please?’ I replied to her, ‘Do you want me to tell her what happened?’ She answered, ‘No mommy, I want to ask her if I could be excused from homework tomorrow because everything is all burnt.’ I have tears in my eyes, but I could not cry, so I said to her, ‘Yes, sure.’ So I called Ms. Rosa Boyer, Julia’s teacher at Waterside Children’s Studio School, where both my children attend. Within 15 minutes Ms. Boyer was there with Kasper’s teacher. They took care of the kids, so I could go to the apartment because I wanted to find my wedding rings, which Continued on page 3

were the first possessions I was desperate to find. “I implored the fire chief, ‘Please, help me. I have to find my wedding rings.’ So he gracefully went with me. The hallway was full of water and he noticed that I didn’t have shoes on, so he gave me some shoes, which I didn’t even stop to think where they came from. So then together we went into the apartment, and we looked inch by inch in the ashes, searching, and we finally found the rings! I hugged him so hard! He turned me to me and said, ‘This is a miracle because everything else is melted.’ Wroblewski credited her eight-year-old daughter for saving them. “My Julia is the hero. She warned me. She knew that something was wrong, and yet was so brave. If it wasn’t for Julia, I do not want to even think about what could have happened.” At this point, Wroblewski started to sob uncontrolla-

THURSDAY, MARCH 30, 2017 Boardwalk Pizza and Thai Rock brought us dinners, Lola Star brought a beach bag of brand new clothes for Julia, plus donations from Elegante, Bungalow Bar, Blue Bungalow, RockaPop and CROM Fitness, who has organized a kick-athon fundraiser, and countless others. I want them all to know how I appreciate their love. “I really want to point out that we are all in this together. It’s one family’s tragedy, but the community has stepped up so much. I am speechless. When I open the door to the next person, I start to cry immediately because I know that all they want to do is to help. They are so good to my kids. Like yesterday, my fellow officers from the 100 Precinct came and dropped boxes full of toys for my children. They also come to check on us every night. “Our parish, St. Rose de Lima, local politicians like Senator Addabbo and Lew Simon reached out to us, offering their support. Principal Dana and the entire Waterside School family, oh my God, they are so good.

bly, but remained determined to show her gratitude to the community. Reminiscent of the support following Hurricane Sandy, the neighborhood came out in droves to help a neighbor in need. From Dayton Towers opening up a studio apartment to the family, to neighbors spearheading donation collections, to local businesses creating gift baskets, to a GoFundMe campaign that raised more then $20,000 within 24 hours, Rockaway’s support was unwavering. “I must tell the entire Rockaway community that we love them so much,” Wroblewski said. “We can be sad, but when we see how people are open to us, perfect strangers who just come to give us a hug, reassuring us that everything will be fine, it’s just all been so beautiful, amidst our huge loss. Our door is never closed because people are constantly coming just to tell us that they are thinking about us, praying for us. It’s just so overwhelming. “Local businesses have also been so kind. For example,

Page 3 It was Julia’s teacher, Ms. Boyer who started the GoFundMe campaign for us. The goodness is so deep. It has to be said that people are busy during the day, they have families, but they find time to care. “I want everyone to know that once we are settled, hopefully in two weeks, please come back and sit with us, hug us, kiss us. “I keep repeating to my husband that we don’t see the bigger picture, only God sees it, and we know he is good. It’s an important experience for us to all feel loved in the community and that when something happens, we can all count on each other. “So yes, despite our loss, there has been miracle after miracle after miracle. Even though we lost everything, we appreciate what we have — each other — and the wonderful Rockaway community,” Wroblewski said. The Wroblewski family is overloaded with material donations, but monetary donations can still be made toward the GoFundMe campaign at www. gofundme.com/WroblewskiFamily.

Seymour Glass So yearly, real estate taxes on a house in Marine Park in Brooklyn, 1969, were $321 for the year. The same house gets a bill this year for $4,462. The reason I know about the $321 bill is because my mother saved the bill and filed it with other records including driving directions to someone’s house in 1993. She saved a poem that a besotted boy sent to my sister when she was in high school. Besotted, there’s a word everyone uses all the time… I guess it’s particularly apt here be-

cause it’s a bit obscure like so many of the items she chose to keep. She wrote a list of names she found amusing in long hand and then typed the list as well. Although she was born a Driscoll, she had the name Boyle for decades, and had probably developed an ear for amusing or unusual names. With Boyle, there was plenty to play with. In Brooklyn, we’d often hear our name said as Berle. Occasionally other kids would riff, and we’d be called Milton or Milty after the comedian Mil-

ton Berle. If we stood out on the basketball court, we’d be called Earl the Berle after Earl the Pearl Monroe, the Hall of Fame basketball player. We were called Boyled egg and whatever else sounded clever to neighborhood rubes. Later, a local politician once called me a Boyle on his ass. That wasn’t bad. Anyway, it seems the name game tickled my mother. Her list had more than 50 names that she came across at work or in random news stories. You could have some fun with Boyle but at least our name wasn’t Terrible, as in Albert Terrible, who made her Top 50 list. His poor teachers. Albert, be good! No, I’m Terrible. I have to guess, but I think some names made the list because they looked funny. Fanya Bimbat and Hilda Headley and Lottie Duda were a few. Lottie Duda had to make her laugh. I’m thinking she got a chuckle from Frankwood Guppy, Zollie Boddie, and Girlie Atkinson. No doubt she got a kick out

Page 5 of Paradise Colucci and Bonus Dixon. I wonder if Bonus, born in 1927 was an unexpected twin. Or a change of life baby. Major Fatherly, Lorna Bravo, Patience Fox and Ollie Vick made the list. And so did Lababe Labaky, Cinderella Whyte, and Rolor Ray. Echo Waltz, Golden Wright, and Airfield Branch sounded like something other than people. Cardinal Bain, who was neither a priest nor a bird, died in 1994. He is remembered on this list. And so is Raven Cochrane. And keeping with the bird theme, Robin Branch is listed. Electo Brammer, Fannie Finger, Charles Navigate, Pearl Diamond, and Fairy Crouch made the list and so did Clyde Beach. He’s not on the list but, her favorite baseball player in recent years was another with a notable name: Buster Posey. Good thing it was a bit later in life when she developed this interest in unusual names. She could have named one of her sons Lance. Lance Boyle would have made this list.

***** If you had your doubts about the winter ever ending, there is a sure sign that nice weather is on the way. Coastal Frozen Yogurt on Beach 109th Street opens for the season on Saturday, April 1. Yay! ***** The ferry is coming but it’s hit a snag, Literally. The ferries are being built in Louisiana and Alabama, and need to sail to New York. The New York Times reported that in an attempt to make the trip a bit shorter, the crew decided to take a shortcut through Florida and wound up getting stuck in some mud in a not-so deep canal. Reminds us of the time the old ferry operator, Seastreak, ran a test run to JFK – or that was the plan - until the ferry got stuck on a sand bar in Jamaica Bay.

THURSDAY, MARCH 30, 2017 ***** Way to pay it forward. Jon Taffer of TV show Bar Rescue, recently thanked the Tubridys for their generous $10K donation towards Big Mike’s Sports Bar in Louisiana, which was flooded in 2016. Bar Rescue helped revamp the Tubridy’s Bungalow Bar after Hurricane Sandy in an episode that aired in October 2013. ***** The battle of the columnists continues. Dr. Peter Galvin recently took Factologist (which is not a real word) Sean McVeigh to task for stating in his Facts You Probably Don’t Need column that measles have been eradicated from the United States. Dr. Galvin said, not so. Mr. McVeigh pointed to the website of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) which states: Since 2000, when measles was declared eliminated from the U.S., the annual number of people reported to have measles ranged from a low of 37 people in 2004 to a high of 667

people in 2014. It’s been (more of less!) eradicated, but unvaccinated travelers bring measles into the country sometimes. But it wasn’t just measles that has fueled the feud. Last week, Dr. Galvin called into question a couple of other facts. He doubted whether a man could blow up a balloon with his ears and whether a certain type of turtle breathes through its, uhm, rear end. Well, Mr. McVeigh seems to have been vindicated by Youtube videos. (Not that we checked if the videos are legitimate but they seemed so). ***** Hello advertisers. Don’t miss out on being in The Summer Guide. This will be our third annual and like our past editions, we’re sure it’ll be a keeper. Call 718-634-3030 or email Pat@ RockawayTimes.com ***** The Rockaway Times Photo Contest is still open for entries. The deadline is April 15. Photos have to be submitted through email to PhotoExpo@ Rockawaytimes.com. Finalists will have their photos blown

Page 7 up to poster size and be placed on the boardwalk. The winner will receive 500 smackeroos and the runner-up will receive a free monthly pass on the ferry thanks to Hornblower. The Rockaway Artists Alliance will be a sponsor, too. ***** Goodbye tollbooths on both Rockaway bridges; they’ll be gone by April 29. Of course, the fees will still be collected as E-Zpass cameras will catch E-Zpass tags and/or license plates numbers. The Governor’s office says drivers will save on gas because they won’t have to slow down. A couple of things occur to us. Look at how much gas Mayor de Blasio costs drivers who get stopped at every intersection as part of Vision Zero (not to mention the cost of increased blood pressure as drivers fume over not being able to get anywhere!). The other thing, by removing toll booth and “hiding” the E-Zpass cameras, you can bet it will be easier for the MTA to raise tolls in the future. Guaranteed!

New Program Aims to Prevent Drug Overdoses Locally By Katie McFadden

You come across your friend or loved one passed out on the floor. They’re unconscious and aren’t responding. As you listen to their breathing get slower and watch their face go pale, you reach for the phone to call 911, in the hopes EMS will arrive in time. The reality that your loved one has overdosed on opioids starts to set in. Precious seconds go by as the risk of irreversible brain damage goes up and their chance of survival goes down. What do you do? One option is to be prepared. A new program spearheaded by Dr. Janie Simmons, a medical anthropologist and Principal Investigator for the National Development and Research Institute (NDRI), is hoping to help locals do just that by providing naloxone, an emergency medication

that blocks or reverses the effects of an opioid overdose, for free. The reality of opioid addiction is a hard pill to swallow. With a huge stigma attached to the subject of addiction, it may seem easier to flush the subject down the drain. However the problem is very real and is taking place in our own backyard. Nationwide, 37 percent of families have someone that is dependent on opioids. Across New York City as a whole, unintentional drug overdose deaths are on the rise, increasing from 800 in 2014 to 937 in 2015, according to an NYC Epi Data Brief. The problem may be bigger in other neighborhoods, especially in parts of the Bronx and Staten Island, but Rockaway has its own frightening statistics. According to the latest Department of Health Community Health Profile

·

for the Rockaway peninsula and Broad Channel, the area ranks the highest in Queens for alcohol- and drug-related hospitalizations. The report, released in 2015, reflects data mostly collected in 2012. The data shows that there were 748 per 100,000 people across the peninsula, hospitalized due to drug use in 2012. According to Simmons, this rate is starting to go down in the local area, but that doesn’t mean it’s no longer a concern. “If you look at NYC Department of Health data, you have fairly high opioid use in the area. It has gone down a little, but it’s still quite high,” Simmons said. She also emphasized that no one is exempt from becoming a victim of overdose. “The kind of demographic that is especially impacted now are white working-class males, a lot of which live in Rocka-

way. Veterans are also at risk because of chronic pain and trauma. Nationally, every demographic is being affected from men to women, young to old, whites to blacks, everyone,” Simmons said. New York City is on a mission to curb these statistics, and the Rockaway area is about to get a dose of help thanks to a grant obtained for a program run by Simmons. As a resident of Rockaway for the past 12 years, Simmons fought hard to get some help for her community. “I’ve really wanted to do something for Rockaway. We tend to be forgotten since we live far from City Hall, so I’ve been waving this flag to get funding for Rockaway,” Simmons said. Through the Fund for Public Health in New York, in conjunction with the NYC DeContinued on page 9

NEW PROGRAM

Continued from Page 8

partment of Health, she was able to obtain a grant that will allow her to run a four-month program that will educate and prepare local residents on how to stop an overdose with use of the antidote naloxone. Dr. Simmons’s colleagues at NDRI often work with homeless veterans and youth and collaborate with the City to help get research participants, or users, access to naloxone. However, she wanted to expand this effort to include those who may not use drugs themselves, but who may have someone in their life who does. “We usually focus on people who are using opioids and making sure they’re equipped because they’re more likely to be around other users, but this effort is much broader. We aim to throw a wider net and educate a wider community. Overdose can happen to anyone. These drugs are available through prescriptions and a lot of parents may be concerned about

THURSDAY, MARCH 30, 2017 their kids or other family members. We want to let people know that these drugs are dangerous, even if someone has a prescription from a doctor. A person can get a respiratory infection or have a beer and their body metabolizes the drug differently and they can easily overdose, even if they’re taking the prescribed dose. Then sometimes we hear about kids getting into medicine cabinets and thinking its candy. We want people to be aware and ready. Time is brain. The quicker you can get naloxone into somebody, the better it’s going to be. Rather than wait for an ambulance to arrive, you can do something to save a loved one or neighbor,” Simmons said. Through the campaign RockawayGetsNaloxone, Simmons, as well as an assistant, will be holding events, as well as visiting various civic and other community meetings to educate the public about drug overdose in the hopes of reducing the stigma behind it, explaining how naloxone can

help, and distributing naloxone at no cost. There are two ways to provide naloxone, also known by the brand name Narcan, to an overdose victim: through an easy-to-use nasal spray or by syringe. The relatively new Narcan nasal spray and Evzio, an auto-injector by kaleo can be obtained at local pharmacies (CVS, Duane Reade) but insurance is necessary because these products are expensive. But RockawayGetsNaloxone is dispensing free naloxone kits supplied by the city containing another widely used nasal spray. The kits also come with instructions on how to use naloxone and what follow-up steps to take after administering it. Simmons will be discussing more and distributing the first naloxone kits at an inaugural event at Whit’s End in Riis Park on Thursday, March 30, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. However this won’t be the only opportunity to obtain naloxone. Over the next four months, Simmons will be at

Page 9 community meetings, and organizations and businesses are encouraged to reach out to Simmons to host their own distribution event. Families are also encouraged to reach out to her. She can be reached at simmons@ndri.org or 212845-4558. The Rockaway Times will also list distribution events in its Things to Do section. Simmons says that if this four-month pilot program is a success, it could be extended to a year. “The whole point of this program is to bring awareness of this problem, destigmatize the topic through education and hopefully prepare people for what to do in the event of an overdose. It’s a community approach and I think it’s going to be well-received and effective,” Simmons said. For more information about Naloxone and the RockawayGetsNaloxone program, check out Simmons’ website www.GetNaloxoneNow.org. and follow GetNaloxoneNow on Facebook and Twitter #getnaloxonenow.

Remembering Susan Hartenstein Susan Hartenstein died on Sunday, March 26. She was 67. Hartenstein, although born in Newark, was a Rockaway resident since shortly after birth and had attended Far Rockaway High School. Hartenstein was a creative spirit. She was an artist, who was heavily involved with the Rockaway Artists Alliance for many years. She was an actress, who occasionally performed with the Rockaway Theatre Company. She was also well known as a writer, often reviewing art shows and serving as a longtime contributor to the “From the Artists Studio” column in

The Wave. “I am at a loss for words. Susan Hartenstein was always such an adventurous soul, a talented writer, actor and artist, and a genuinely warm, and truly funny, quick witted person. She was certainly one of the people who was there from the beginning, who nurtured and made RAA what it is today,” RAA President Dan Guarino said. “We will all feel her loss, and the empty place in our family, our community. But we will also celebrate her life, and all be glad we had known her.” A private service was held on Thursday, March 30 in New Jersey.

Beach 94th Stairs Under Repair Repairs already? Readers recently brought it to our attention that the staircase to the boardwalk on Beach 94th Street was undergoing construction. With the stairs only being completed two years ago, some were wondering why the work was being done, so we reached out to the Parks Department for an answer. “Surface repairs are being made to the Beach 94th Street stairs after hairline cracks were discovered in the concrete. Both the stairway and seating areas are structurally sound, and repairs will only necessitate removing and replacing the top

two-to-three inches of concrete. Access to the boardwalk ramps will remain open during repairs and we expect the work to be complete by mid-May,” Meghan Lalor, spokesperson for the Parks Department, said. Parks believes the cracks were caused due to a combination of things such as weather fluctuations during the curing stage and the composition of the concrete mix used. In order to avoid future cracking, the new concrete will be poured under better weather conditions and a sealant will be sprayed on the stairs to minimize surface cracking.

Notice something different? Where did the mailbox in front of the Rockaway Park Post Office go? With it being across from The Rockaway Times office, and something

we utilize often, we noticed right away. However Andy Feldman (the Recipe Swap lady’s husband) sent us this snap and asked what’s up. The mailbox was just minding its own business when a vehicle supposedly knocked it down. Post Office workers say it will return, but when? We don’t know. Feldman said the mailbox has been there his whole life, but we have to disagree. It found itself victim to another car accident about two years ago and eventually made its return. We trust that the Post Office will replace it again in no time.

Dog poop on the streets, beaches and boardwalk is a nuisance, and a constant complaint of local residents. However, what if the fetid feces is in your neighbor’s backyard or terrace? A local resident approached The Rockaway Times (RT) for help. He did not want his name mentioned, nor even his locality, because as exasperated as he was, he did not want to cause any animosity nor unfriendly relations with this offending neighbor, who he overall described as “a nice person.” The individual who reached out to RT is referred to as “Mr. Rankled Resident,” in this article. Mr. Rankled Resident loves the Rockaway community he resides in. His only complaint is the stench and flies caused by dog poop in his neighbor’s backyard. “They don’t walk their dog everyday. So especially during the week days, when I could totally understand it’s hard to fit in time to walk the dog, they just let the dog go relieve itself in the backyard,” Mr. Rankled Resident said. “The worst part is that they do not pick up after their dog poops in the backyard. So by the end of the week, the smell multiplied by the flies is unbearable. During the summer, it becomes embarrassing because we host barbecues and parties for friends and family in our backyard. Numerous times, I expressed to my neighbor the stench and flies the dog poop was causing. He cleaned up a few times, but then would relapse. I have even personally climbed over the fence and washed down his yard myself.

With the summer approaching, I cringe to see what’s going to happen. I know for a fact that all winter, that dog was literally using the backyard as it’s personal potty. So tell me, because it’s his private property, do I right have the right to complain? If not, then basically I could just personally take a sh*t in my own backyard, even though it’s unsanitary? Is it my right because it’s my private property?” Mr. Rankled Resident questioned. RT called 311 to get the 411 on homeowners and renters rights, when it comes to dog feces on private property. The 311 representative said, “The City requires property owners to clean up animal waste on their property, adjoining sidewalks and gutters even if they do not own the pet, stray, or wild animal making the waste. It is not illegal to feed stray animals, but the City may issue a violation to the property owner for any unsanitary conditions created as a result. “The City accepts reports of animal owners or property owners who fail to clean up unsanitary conditions or odors due to animal waste in backyards, private lots, residential or commercial buildings, and other areas. According to the 311 representative, you can not file the complaint anonymously. “To file a complaint you must give the exact name and address of the offending property owner. You must also give your name and exact property address, which is not revealed to the resident. The complaint is then filed with the Department of Health and Mental

Continued from Page 12 Hygiene. NYC considers this a health violation. Once the complaint is filed, the City will respond accordingly by sending a representative to investigate,” the 311 representative said. When relayed this information, Mr. Rankled Resident was relieved. “I really hate to cause any discord with my neighbor, but I have to move forward with a complaint. At the end of the day, it would actually help everyone on our street. The stench and flies are so unbearable. Also, if you are grilling food in the backyard, it’s just not sanitary,” Mr. Rankled Resident said. Also, Rockaway and Broad Channel residents, for those of you who detest the dog poop on the streets, NYC has the Pooper Scooper Law. Currently, the law mandates that each person who owns or controls a dog must remove any feces left by that dog on any sidewalk, open front yard, gutter, street, or

THURSDAY, MARCH 30, 2017 other public area, and dispose of it in a legal manner. A City agent must see the crime taking place in order to give a ticket. The Pooper Scooper Law does not apply to guide dogs or service dogs walking with disabled individuals. Who can issue you a ticket if your dog poops and you don’t scoop? Authorized employees of NYC’s departments of health, sanitation, or parks and recreation. And the ticket fine? Upwards of a whopping $250! So pet owners, make sure to scoop your pooch’s poop! Gratitude Dear Editor: She opened the door to the studio apartment the four of them were now crammed into. Her face clearly showed the exhaustion of the last two days, but she tried her best to not let it show. “Hi”, my wife Jean said tentatively, unsure how to begin to address a woman we never met, but who had just lost everything. “We heard about the fire, and just wanted to come by and drop off some clothes for you and the kids." The woman struggled to keep from crying. “Thank

you,” she said in a slight Polish accent, hugging each of us warmly. “If you want to see the apartment, I can show you.” She disappeared for a moment and we were left to stand in the hall. Through the doorway, I could see the apartment was cluttered with all the things that had been donated from the neighborhood and collected in the lobby the night before. We actually thought the collection was that night and hadn’t expected to even knock on their door, planning instead to just leave our things in the lobby. But one of the neighbors had told us where they lived, and practically insisted we knock on the door. She returned and said, “I don’t know where the keys are, but I have pictures." She pulled out her phone and showed us what their home now looked like. Nothing visible but blackened walls and devastation. Clearly nothing was salvageable

from this. She briefly told us the story of how her daughter had mentioned smelling smoke, and her going out of the bathroom to see the terrace ablaze. We stood there, silent, just listening. “Things you can replace, but so many important things, you can’t replace.” She mentioned a little kitchen magnet she brought with her from Poland, given to her by a friend. “Every time I look at it, I know she is there.” But gone now. Many who lost everything in Sandy, including us, know what she is experiencing. “I can’t even be proud. Can’t even say, no, no thank you, we’re fine.” She told us of bringing her son to school late that morning because she couldn’t find a long sleeve shirt for him. I mentioned that some of my son, Thomas’ clothes would probably fit her son. She turned to Thomas. “Thank you for being so generous.” Thomas smiled shyly back.

The Rockaway Times Someone had told her to write a list of things she needed. There were no pencils, no paper. In five minutes, everything was gone. At least with Sandy, people had time to prepare, to get things up higher, if they wanted to. Some things could be saved. Here, there was nothing. No time to prepare, just get out of the apartment to save your family’s life. A delivery man came out of the elevator and approached the apartment. “Boardwalk Pizza heard about the fire and wanted to send this to you,” he said, handing over boxes and a bag of food. She had to turn away to hide her tears. He didn’t stick around for a tip, knowing this family will now need every dime to try to begin replacing a lifetime of belongings. Another story: “A neighbor comes to the door and says, ‘I think this is yours’,” she said. “They found it on the Continued on page 15

She meant everyone, of course, not us. She needed to bring the food down the hall to where her children were staying with a neighbor, so we said our goodbyes. They say gratitude is the shortest-lived emotion. If ever there is a lesson in gratitude to be learned, the Wroblewski family is both living it and teaching it to us. Let’s not forget it, this time. SFP To Be Repaved Shore Front Parkway is getting a makeover. On Wednesday, March 29, Councilman Eric Ulrich announced that the New York City Dept. of Transportation (DOT) has agreed to his requests to repave the entire Shore Front Parkway - from Beach 73rd Street to Beach 108th Street as early as next week. The repaving will help to alleviate dangerous road conditions exacerbated by Superstorm Sandy. Councilman Ulrich submitted the request to the DOT in the months following Superstorm Sandy, but was told that the project would be put on-hold until after the new boardwalk was complete to avoid heavy vehicle congestion. "This has been a long time coming,” Councilman Ulrich

said. "We've been working with DOT on this project since after Sandy. When I toured the area with DOT Commissioner Nicole Garcia and her Deputy Al Silvestri last year, I urged them to make Shore Front a top priority. I applaud DOT for making good on their promise to find funding for and begin this much-needed project." Ulrich hosted a Town Hall with DOT last fall, where members of the community were invited to discuss plans for improved crossings and parking issues along Shore Front Parkway. The majority of attendees expressed the need to repave Shore Front Parkway. Weather permitting, work is expected to begin the week of April 3, 2017.

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

On Herpes

Genital herpes is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States. It is caused by either herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 2 (HSV-2), a virus that almost exclusively causes genital infections, or HSV type 1 (HSV-1) which causes oral and lip infections (cold sores) and genital herpes. HSV-2 is estimated to infect more than 45 million US residents aged 14 to 49 years. HSV-1 now causes 10 to 20 percent of all new cases of genital herpes. Congential herpes (newborns infected during birth by an infected mother) is more than twice as common as congenital syphilis, and can be devastating to newborns. In addition there

is a strong association between genital herpes infection and HIV type 1. There is no cure and no vaccine for HSV infections. There is also no coordinated national effort to control genital herpes. Efforts to reduce HSV transmission can be challenging because most infected people (estimated to be 8 out of 10) are unaware they are infected, yet they remain at risk to transmit the virus to others. The first step in confronting a widespread, largely underrecognized public health problem is to identify those who are infected. One would think that given such a large problem, screening the population with a blood test

¡

To advertise in THE ROCKAWAY TIMES call 718-634-3030 ads@RockawayTimes.com

or genital swab would readily identify infected individuals, but sadly such is not the case. Recently, the US Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) again (they last made a recommendation in 2005), recommended against, routine screening for HSV. This is based on the high rate of false positives (estimated to be about the same rate as true positives or 50 percent), potential harms from screening (telling and treating someone as positive when they are not), and limited evidence that medical treatment reduces transmission to uninfected persons and newborns. In addition, screening for HSV-1 cannot determine the infection site, so a positive HSV-1 screen could be from an oral infection, genital infection, or both. HSV screening should still be performed, however, in selected cases. Treatment with antiviral medications can shorten the length of an attack and lessen the likelihood of transmission. Longterm suppressive treatment can do the same, plus reduce the number of outbreaks with their pain and discomfort, but treat-

The Rockaway Times ment does nothing to reduce the social stigma that HSV infection can bring. Obstetricians and hospitals will recommend a C-section to a symptomatic infected woman about to deliver, to avoid having the baby become infected. Because HSV is transmitted by physical contact with an infected person, the only way to prevent transmission is physical protection (condom). Oral contraceptives, IUDs and other pregnancy protection methods will not prevent HSV infection. Also an infected but asymptomatic person may still transmit the virus. It is clear then that the medical community, perhaps with the assistance of lawmakers and the public, needs to goad the federal agencies like the NIH, CDC, and others into action to develop better screening tests and methods. In this age of technology it should be relatively easy to reliably identify, warn, and treat infected individuals in order to stop the transmission of this nasty virus. Locals Pay It Forward With Free Food On 'Rockaway Day' By Kami-Leigh Agard

Heaping plates of savory Peruvian-style fried rice (arroz chaufa) with ham and peas, sautéed vegetables and delicious Italian pastries just to satisfy your sweet tooth…all dished up for you for FREE. That’s what dozens of locals were treated to at Rockaway Day this past Saturday, March 25. It was a damp, overcast and rainy day, but that did not stop locals, Louis Harris, east coast representative of the nonprofit, Black Surfer's Association (BSA) and friend, Tina Schlissel from bringing some sunshine to Rockaway Beach Boulevard. In their crisp, white chef coats and welcoming warm smiles, they gave out heaping plates of steaming free food. Yes, free. This was not a gimmick or sales pitch. As part of ‘Rockaway Free Food Day,’ in front of yoga studio, Rockaway Love on 90-16 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, these two just humbly served something unfamiliar, yet won-

derfully tempting for passersby in the neighborhood — indubitably free, flavorfully fragrant food. Why? According to Harris, he received an unexpected, but fantastically generous donation for his nonprofit, BSA. “This anonymous donor in a handwritten letter, accompanied by a check for $1,500 just simply stated that she admired the work I was doing in the community, something she did herself for 30 years. She said that at this season in her life, she is physically unable, but happy to support folks who tirelessly work to uplift youth and the community at large,” Harris said. Instead of just holding on to the extra surplus in money, after paying off some expenses for upcoming projects for his nonprofit, Harris said that he wanted to do something unusual, but rewarding for the community. Thus the idea for free food on 'Rockaway Day' was born.

Louis Harris and Tina Schlissel dishing up food

Harris contacted local Peruvian rotisserie, Chicks to Go, and bought platters of food. Also, his former employer, Russo’s On The Bay in Howard Beach, where he previously worked as a prep cook for their Department for the Aging food program, donated gourmet Italian pastries. So how did locals first react when encouraged to grab a plate? “It was really interesting to see how at first, folks were shy

and some were even suspiciously eyeing us, while gawking at the plates of food. I guess people were shocked that it was totally free, nothing expected in return. Once they accepted a plate, you could see the euphoric glee in their eyes, and of course wanted more. Of course, we had to reign that in,” Harris laughed.

Prepare to be dazzled, thrilled and taken on an emotional ride when you see the Rockaway Theatre Company’s production of “A Chorus Line.” If you head to the Post Theater in Fort Tilden this weekend or next, you’ll be delighted by the more than sixteen talented cast members who not only act, but dance and sing in this fabulous musical. We sat down with longtime RTC member Catherine Leib, to learn about her career as an actress and her latest role as Cassie Ferguson in the new musical. Breezy Point resident Catherine Leib first made her RTC debut in the summer of 2005 as a member of the ensemble for “My Fair Lady.” “I was pretty nervous, but I went in and auditioned and they let me in the show and I was so excited,” Leib said. She was 18 at the time, which Leib says is a late start, but she spent most of her early years perfecting her dance skills. Leib started dancing at age three with Mrs. Gert Hendry of Breezy Point, followed by the Connelly Dance Center in Rockaway and she spent some time doing competitive ballroom dancing while living in Long Island. “I’ve always been in the theatrical world, but it was mostly dance centered. In college at Fordham, she studied and became more involved in theater and took classes with the RTC to brush up on her skills around the time she made her RTC stage debut. Since then, she has been involved in more than a dozen shows and has worked her way up in the company, with leading roles, choreographing some productions and even doing a bit of costume work. In “A Chorus Line,” Leib stars in a leading ensemble role. For those not familiar with the show, Leib says, “Chorus Line is about a group of peo-

ple auditioning for a Broadway show and this director who asks them to just talk and tell their story of how they started dancing and how they came into theater and what influenced their lives. Through this process it shows this bond behind all of these characters. It’s all about how everyone feels about what’s going on around them and this director pulling out these emotions from everyone through this grueling audition process, which is what a lot of the actors doing the show go through in real life. It’s very relatable.” Leib plays the character of Cassie Ferguson, who she describes as “a longtime dancer who dated the director of the Broadway show. She’s fallen on some hard times and decided, after being with the director and making it as far as she could on Broadway, to go to California and grow her dreams. It doesn’t turn out how she wanted it to and she winds up back in this chorus line, auditioning for a part, and the director is none too pleased to see this person he took out of the chorus line, to be back at this point. It’s hard for him to watch and she really struggles with what she wants and what’s in her heart, and

A CHORUS LINE

Continued from Page 18 her heart says she just wants to dance.” In the role, Leib sings, dances, and of course acts, and though it’s a lot of work, she says it’s worth it. “It is very grueling, but I’ve never done a show that has felt so rewarding. On this stage, you see a lot of aspiring singers, dancers and actors and you really feel that need and that drive to do something on the level of those on Broadway and this comes through in everyone’s character in the show,” she said. On Friday, March 24, all of the characters came to life before an audience on opening night. “I’m still trying to unpack all of the feelings I have. It was like having an out of body experience. I’ve never felt that kind of feeling before and I’ve done a lot of shows. I went through everything from nerves, terror, excitement, to sweating and crying and reaching a point of sadness, but then at the end I felt like I was on top of the world,” Leib

said about opening night. “Through this huge range of emotions, you get to see what the audience is feeling as well, and after portraying these characters for them, they were so grateful and happy and you could see they went through the emotions with us and that’s how you know you’re going a job right. The performers are only as good as the audience they’re performing for.”

Working among good company isn’t too bad either. “The RTC has become my second family. The people who belong to this company are so excited and they want to make our shows the best they can be and everyone is so encouraging and wonderful. When you’re doing something so intense like throwing your heart into a role or breaking your body down being tough as a dancer, you need that emotional support and you

Page 19 get that here. I’ve made so many lifelong friends that could never be replaced,” Leib said, adding that the company is always open to additional support, whether it be through the audience buying tickets or new acting blood. “A lot of people in Rockaway don’t know that we even exist and they spend all this money to go into the city for Broadway, but we have such great quality and homegrown talent here. I’m so proud to be a part of this company. It’s a wonderful place for a creative artist to hone their craft and there’s nobody that we wouldn’t accept if you want to get involved.” There are six more performances of “A Chorus Line,” including 8 p.m. performances on March 31, April 1, 7 and 8, and two 2 p.m. matinées on April 2 and April 8. Reserve your tickets now as shows are selling out quickly. See www. RockawayTheatreCompany. org. The RTC’s next show will be “Rumors” in May and you can catch Leib playing Ulla in the summer show, “The Producers.”

Bowery Spirits By Lou Pastina

In1672, Peter Stuyvesant, the puritanical one-legged Governor of New Amsterdam, built a chapel on what is now the corner of 2nd Avenue and 11th Street in the East Village. Almost 350 years later it is now known as St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery. The word bowery is Dutch meaning “farm. Back in those days, the area was covered with farms and orchards, and it was mostly owned by Peter Stuyvesant. Hard to believe today that is what the Lower East Side was like, but it’s true. The church is the second oldest site of continuous worship in Manhattan. There are spirits that inhabit the place, and I believe them to be gen-

tle and good-natured. There have been several additions over the years after the Governor’s family sold it. A fire nearly destroyed it, but the Episcopal Church that bought it and the artistic community that calls the church home have endured. Stuyvesant is buried there and so are many other famous Americans including a vice president of the US, several NYC mayors, Revolutionary war heroes and even a commodore of the US Navy. In addition several artists have inhabited the grounds over the years such as Kahil Gibran, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Carl Sandburg, Martha Graham, Isadora Duncan, Patti Smith and Allen Ginsburg to name a few. They must have all sensed the spirituality of the place. So it was no surprise that the site was chosen to honor a man who recently left us too early. A Rockaway resident by way of Brooklyn

and New Jersey with stops in Nashville. He left a rich narrative brightly colored with family and friends and songs, recalling the sweet nature of this beautifully gifted musician. Those that came recited poems, sang songs, and reminisced about a person who had touched their lives deeply over the course of his too short life. The church was filled to capacity this past weekend, and many came great distances, and the tears that flowed were of joy, knowing that as one of his classic songs went, “everything is a miracle to me. If you were lucky enough to hear Greg Trooper perform, you were blessed. For those that didn’t, we are lucky to have Greg’s recordings to hear his stories through his music. Greg was a regular everyday guy who had the ability to create a story set to the music of an acoustic gui-

tar. Famous recording artists have recorded many of his songs, but he could sing them better than anyone because they came from his heart. He married into a creative family of Brooklyn Irish that added spice to his life, and is survived by that loving and caring extended family. On Saturday, their friends, family and colleagues all came out to celebrate this local, humble star. And for an afternoon, everyone in that old Dutch church felt connected to each other in ways we have all long since forgotten. It was a connection that no electronic social network could ever replicate, because it was real, it was human, and it bound the spirits from the past with the present, and the miracle that can be the future. I think the Bowery spirits were happy to welcome their new addition to the choir.

The Young and Beautiful “Look at all the young people and isn’t it a beautiful thing.” That was Bette Anne Howard’s comment to me as we witnessed the stunning Kelly Magee getting married to Patrick Vesey in SFDS by Father Jim Cunningham. The church was packed and full of vibrant, young people. These are the best years of their lives. I hope they know it, but if they are anything like me, they will not know how good they have it until later on in life. They have stamina, strength, health and beauty. Life is just really beginning with jobs, weddings, children, etc. This is their time to soar and I hope all their dreams come true. It is a blessing to have this life. At Kelly’s wedding, I witnessed for the first time in my life, grandparents celebrating their granddaughter’s wedding. They walked into the reception hall with such pride and joy. I thought to myself, how incredible is it for Joan and Joe Toal to be at their granddaughter’s wedding? They have been part of her life since Day 1. She has been blessed to have grandparents throughout her entire life, and now they are celebrating her wedding day. This is truly a blessing. Extraordinary and inspiring. At the end of Joe’s toast to Kelly and Patrick, he said, “God Bless America.” He is a true patriot and has passed this on to his children and grandchildren. There were many people from all walks of life at this celebration. I was honored to be at my best friend’s daughter’s wedding. I am now sitting at the grownup table and for the most part enjoying it. Yes, I would like to be carefree and young again, but I already did that, so I am ok sitting out a few dances now

and again. I actually enjoy getting older and feeling a bit wiser. I am embracing it all. Hoping one day to see my own children marry and settle down, but that is down the road if they choose to do so. All we ever really want for our children is to be happy and healthy. Over and over we will pray for them to be safe, happy and at peace. I couldn’t help but think of my good friend Paulette Mancuso’s Mom when I was at the wedding, because I had borrowed a beautiful beaded pouch from Paulette that belonged to her Mom. Back in her Mom’s day they had formals once a month where they dressed up like they were going to a ball. As I held her bag, I tried to visualize the elegance and beauty of her Mom gracefully carrying the clutch bag. It held a special energy for me knowing Paulette’s Mom used this bag 50 or 60 years ago and was part of a much different generation. It isn’t just a pretty bag, there is a history behind it. Life has changed in so many ways for so many of us. The young do not have formals like that. The boys do not call on our daughters to go out on a date. The dances are gone. Yes, it is wonderful to see all the young, beautiful people but I am afraid they do not have what our past generations have had. I hope one day it all comes back and the young live free of worry, stress and conflict. At the end of the evening the young, beautiful adults were full of life and energy. The other half were drinking decaf coffee and enjoying the cake. Life is full circle. One day they will be in our shoes and the next generation will hopefully be as happy and healthy as this one.

Patching A Hole By Artie Wallace

There are three kinds of holes: small, medium and large, and each require a different procedure to repair. Small holes: Small holes are easy to repair. For holes smaller than one inch, simply spackle the hole filling it completely. Allow to dry thoroughly, it will crack, that's to be expected. Apply a second coat, this time feathering it out a little. Repeat once or twice more, feathering a little more each time as needed. Sand as needed and paint. Medium holes: For holes one to two-and-ahalf inches, apply a thin coat of spackle, covering the surrounding area by about three inches.

Firmly press a piece of drywall joint tape over the hole and smooth it with a taping knife. Allow to dry thoroughly, then apply feathering coats (two to three feathering coats may be needed). Sand as needed until the surface is smooth. Large holes: For larger holes you will need to square off the hole using a keyhole saw. Then cut a piece of sheet rock to the size of the hole. If your hole is not on the beams, you may need to add a piece of wood on the inside of the hole to support your patch. Secure your patch using drywall screws. Apply a thin coat of spackle and tape (as discredit in medium holes). Then feather out the tape

seams (allowing to dry between coats) and sand as needed. Before painting: Once your patch is sanded and appears to be smooth, run your hand over the spackle from different angles. You’ll

probably find a few spots you missed. Any un smooth areas, apply a very thin coat of spackle and sand again before painting. If there is a project you would like to see in The DIYer, email me at rocktimesdiy@gmail. com

event was a testament to the relationships maintained by the Guests of Honor with the entire community. The evening began with a fabulous smorgasbord that featured salads, sushi, and delectable hors d’oeuvres. The ceremony and speeches that followed were a fitting tribute to the esteemed guests of honor. The committee, as well as the president, Joel Berkowitz, and Rabbi Tsvi Selengut spoke of the incredible work Irv and Mira have done for the community in Belle Harbor over many decades. The guests of honor used the opportunity to speak of the unique beauty of the diverse and intimate Jewish community that Belle Harbor boasts.

The dinner was both delicious and enjoyable for all in attendance. The ambiance was enhanced by the melodious vocals of a one-man-band and the majestic set-up of the hall. One of the highlights of the evening was the appearance of world-renowned comedian and Internet sensation, Modi Rosenberg, who tore apart the room with laughter. The hard work of the dedicated dinner committee created an affair that will go down as one of the most memorable events in Ohab Zedek’s storied history. The 86th annual dinner capped off a season of exciting and educational new programming in the synagogue.

The Gerritsen Beach Fire Department received $10,000 to improve its communication infrastructure.

More than 20 community organizations received more than $91,000 in funding through Williams, the company behind the natural gas pipeline running through Riis Park. Twice a year, Williams distributes grants to organizations that are in or provide services to the Rockaway area through the Rockaway Community Grant Program. The company has awarded nearly $800,000 since the grant program was first initiated in 2014. This spring, 21 groups have received grants including local emergency services, community, educational and environmental initiatives. Grants up to $15,000 per organization are awarded to organizations promoting initiatives that support environmental enhancement, education, economic development, emergency services, youth and senior programs. Community organizations can complete and submit the electronic application found online at www. williams.com/rockawaygrant. Among the top grantees this year, receiving $10,00 each, are the Roxbury Volunteer Emergency Services, for a RVES Powered Ambulance Cot, and the Gerritsen Beach Fire Department, which will use the money to improve its existing emergency communication infrastructure. “This much-needed grant award will be used to allow us to more effectively coordinate with other volunteer fire departments in New York City, Daniel Cavanaugh, Chief of the Gerritsen Beach Fire Department, said. “Currently, we have limited ability to dispatch and commu-

nicate with emergency vehicles over long distances. This grant award is going to be used to improve communications and resolve that issue. We are very grateful for Williams’ support, which is going to help improve the safety of our community. The next largest grant, of $9,320, went to the Rockaway-based Volunteer Fireman’s Association of the City of New York for the Fit Test. The Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department received $7,500 for Hose Replacement. The Far Rockaway Arverne Coalition received $7,200. Grants of $5,000 went to the Rockaway Point Volunteer Emergency Services for Operation Water Rescue, and the Rockaway Volunteer Ambulance Search and Rescue Corp., for First Responder Support. The Rockaway Point Association received $4,000 for its Bicycle Safety and Etiquette Program, as well as the Community Center of the Rockaway Peninsula for its Vocational Program. Five groups received grants of $3,000 including the PFC. John G. McLaughlin Post 8540 Veterans of Foreign Wars in Breezy Point for its Help a Vet program; the Rockaway Youth Task Force for its Community Garden Improvement Project; the Greater Jamaica Development Corporation for its GJDC Hospitality Skills Program; the Brooklyn Public Library for the Today's Teens, Tomorrow's Techies (T4) program; the Salt Marsh Alliance of Brooklyn for its Trail Erosion Project; and the National Parks of New York Harbor Conservancy for its Jamaica Bay Kayak Program, Train the Trainer. The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance received $2,500 for its Dyslexia Tutoring Program. Four $2,000 grants went to the Rockaway Little League for its Fence Project, the Rockaway Rockies for its Youth Hockey League and the Rockaway Rugby Club for its Rugby Field Project and its Youth Rugby Program. Finally, the Black Surfing Association received $1,000 for Program Support.

The Idea Guys Hot Water Tank Monitor By Chris Boyle

I’m sure it says something about me that most of my ideas have to do with improving life in the bathroom, but that’s a column for another day. Today, we will try to navigate the uncertain limitations of the household hot water tank. The problem? Running out of hot water. The fact is, in a contemporary household populated by two adults and three teenagers, the politics of bathroom usage can get pretty ugly. One of the most commonly asked questions in our house is “what the (heck) are they doing in there for so long?” That query is usually followed by the through-the-bathroom-door declaration, “You better not use all the hot water!” As much as I want to blame the hot water hog for draining the pipes of that precious fluid, I have a hard time getting

too worked up because they’re swimming blind, so to speak. They have no idea how much hot water is left in the tank. They don’t know that someone did four loads of wash an hour ago, followed by successive showers by two youths trying to wash off last night’s party. They don’t know if there’s three minutes or 30 left before the heated fount turns to ice. The solution? A hot water monitor in the shower. A simple gauge that would reflect exactly how much time is left before the hot water runs out. The monitor would act like your car’s fuel gauge, gently reminding you that you better fill ‘er up soon, or it’ll be a long walk home. You still wouldn’t want to be the last one in the shower, but at least you wouldn’t find yourself fully lathered with shampoo and blindly hoping that you have time to rinse before the arctic tide comes in!

Redfern Community Center’s Doors Will Reopen With Child Center of NY After a major uproar over the sudden closing of the Redfern Community Center on Friday, March 3, Child Center of NY (CCNY) stepped in and announced on Monday, March 27, that they will take over. According to a statement released by CCNY’s CEO, Traci Donnelly: “With the strong support of Council Member Donovan Richards, Senator James Sanders, Jr., and the NYC Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD), we are grateful for the opportunity to step in and serve a dynamic and dedicated community. For years, children and adults alike have looked to the Redfern Community Center, a Cornerstone program of DYCD, as a safe and fun place to come together. Residents were understandably shocked and upset to find the doors literally closed to them. However, as a provider of Cornerstone programs in

Flushing and elsewhere in Far Rockaway, we at CCNY know that they play an invaluable role in the communities they serve. Far Rockaway, and the area surrounding the Redfern Houses in particular, may be underserved, but it is not undeserving. “CCNY will continue to offer the after school enrichment, adult programming, and sense of community that the Redfern Community Center has been known for.” CCNY also stated, “while our role is effective immediately, it will be a couple of weeks before we can fully reopen Redfern’s doors. In the meantime, we are investigating facility issues that must be addressed, hiring qualified staff, and building programming that meets the needs of the community as expressed by its members.” For more information call CCNY at 718-651-7770 or email info@ childcenterny.org

LOCALS PAY

Continued from Page 17 “We gave out more than 60 plates. Even some homeless people came and shyly accepted plates. Folks kept saying that you don’t see this kind of stuff in Rockaway. Free Food? Unheard of for them. “I wanted to just spread some positive joy in the community. I would love to make this a monthly surprise event. I wouldn’t promote it until probably the night before, because I might end up running out of food fast! “This is also a great way for local businesses and nonprofits to collaborate together to do something positive for the community. For business’, it only boosts their presence in the community, whilst doing something positive that folks would always remember them for,” Harris said. Anna Lev, proprietor of yoga studio, Rockaway Love, said that when Harris contacted her for permission to set up their tables and food in

front of the studio, there was no question. “I love the work Louis and his nonprofit does in the community. Between the beach cleanups and cooking classes for children, I felt honored to be invited to offer something. To be honest, I didn’t do much, but I was happy to play a small part in such an amazing endeavor,” Lev said. What’s next on the menu for Harris and his nonprofit? This Saturday, April 1 at 1p.m., there will be free yoga for kids at Rockaway Love. Also in the third week of April, there will be a free cooking class for kids hosted by Chef Carlos Varella of local Brazilian eatery, Beach Bistro 96, located on 95-19 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. In addition, stay tuned for information about upcoming community beach cleanups. For more information on all scheduled activities and Harris’ nonprofit, follow black_surfing_rockaway on Instagram or email Louisharris74573@gmail.com

Eat For a Good Cause What’s better than eating good? Eating good for a good cause. On Tuesday, April 4, some local restaurants will be participating in Eat to Defeat ALS. When you dine at one of the participating restaurants, 10 percent of your bill will be donated to ALS ONE, an organization that strives to find a cure for this debilitating neurodegenerative disease that weakens the muscles and impacts physical function. Restaurants across the country will be participating in this fundraiser, but you can help out locally by visiting Kennedy’s in Breezy Point or Pico on Beach 129th on Tuesday. For more info or to register your restaurant, visit www.etdals. com.

Local Karate School Awards Dedicated Students With Black And Brown Belts

Sunday, March 26, was a wonderful day at local World Champions Karate Center, where eight new black belts were awarded. The testing these students endured was the culmination of an average of five years of serious karate training. The commitment and dedication to their Shotokan, (Japanese karate training), were evident. The Karateka (Japanese translation of karate students or practitioners) have complet-

ed hundreds of hours of classes in self-defense, Kata (form), Kumite (sparring), Kobudo (weapons training), as well as assisting in classes and teaching younger students. The support among students was felt around the dojo. When the 18 Kata and the 11 weapons Kata demonstrations were executed, the eight students appeared as one, a well-synchronized team. In addition to the criteria as set forth by AAU Karate and inter-

Black Belt students: L-R: Dylan Ramoo, Fiorella Varas, Andreas Varas, Krystian Boruch, Luke Sanchez, Megan Langella, Reiner Cevallos and Olivia Brown.

national Shotokan organizations, the students demonstrated Bunkai (Kata), self-defense to various attacks, a teaching component, and round-robin sparring, where each student had to fight three opponents in succession with no rest. In addition to the black belt

testing there were 18 previous promotions earlier that day, including beginning yellow belts to high brown belts. World Champions Karate Center is located on 112-20 Beach Channel Drive, Rockaway Park. For more information, call 718-945-1618.

Purple and Brown Belt students: First row L-R: Sean, Reggie, Leila , Dylan. Second row L-R: James, Brandon, Jaydon, Jenelle.

more than 200 donors. The plunge was not only held for a good cause, but also in the memory of Special Olympics athlete, Emily Hutton, who passed away in August 2014. “We had the largest crowds to date, the sun was shining and we had an absolute blast!” organizers said.

“Thank you to our sponsors, spectators, and most importantly our Plungers for making this day so successful!” After the plunge, participants headed to the Bungalow Bar to warm up at the after party. Photos from the Rockaways Polar Plunge Facebook Page and Laura Deckelman.
