Let’s Have a Ball!

Poseidon’s Prom on April 1

Ladies and gentlemen, mermaids and mermen, funky fish, jubilant jellyfish, and boisterous bottom feeders, the time has come for the annual Poseidon’s Prom. This yearly, nautical themed fundraiser will take place on April Fool’s Day at The Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th Street). This adult dance party and raffle helps keep our favorite family art parade a staple of September.

This year’s event, “Ship of Fools,” kicks off Saturday, April 1 at 7:30 p.m. The event will feature legendary sea creature “DJ Paddy Tubz” on the ones and twos. The event displays art from local artists, as well as a plethora of raffles from local businesses who show their support for the end of summer strut. There will be a 50/50, as well as raffles from St. James, The Rockaway Hotel, Last Stop, Deirdre Maeves, Betsy’s Bungalow, Pico, Ocean Bliss Yoga, Ocean Etching, Bungalow Bar, Theresa Hoffman, Batesy’s and many more!

Guests are encouraged to dress up in their sexiest sea suits and dresses for the big dance. Years past have featured some phenomenal outfits. The event will culminate with the crowning of the prom king and queen, who will lead September’s parade!  Additionally, a very special award will be given to a member of the team who has shown worthiness to the cause. While the name of this particular Poseidon trophy may not be fit for print in this community publication, for those in the running, it is a very coveted piece of art.

The prom costs 60 dollars, which includes drinks and light bites, as well as an array of entertainment and aquatic vibes. Tickets can be purchased on PoseidonsParade. com, or at the event. If you are a barnacle and cannot make it to the party, you can still purchase tickets on the page in order to

support the parade. The money raised helps cover the costs of running the yearly parade. If you are interested in supporting Poseidon’s Parade, reach out to Queen Casey or El Capitan Geoff.

The team would like to thank the community for making the parade a yearly success. The Rockaway Mermaid Brigade also thanks The Knights of Columbus, DJ Paddy Tubz, and all of the generous vendors that help keep us rolling. They can’t wait to see you all at the grand ball!

New City Lifeguards

Set to Get Pay Bump

According to a March 28 article by Katie Honan of THE CITY, pay for first and second-year lifeguards is going up to $19.46 per hour rather than $16.10. This is in addition to a possible 3% salary boost under a contract agreement with the lifeguard union, District Council 37.

The bump in pay for new guards began last year as lifeguard numbers were at a low, and NYC Parks was trying to boost numbers amid a lifeguard shortage.

Returning lifeguards are also set to make a little bit extra this summer, but it comes with a catch. Returning guards must work at least four days a week through July 8 and August 19 to get a $1,000 bonus. Many will qualify, as NYC lifeguards tend to work six days a week.

“As we continue to build our lifeguard corps, we’re committed to supporting these critical staff who put their own safety at risk to save

lives and make summer happen for millions of New Yorkers,” Department of Parks and Recreation Commissioner Sue Donoghue told THE CITY in a statement.

This comes after NYC Parks’ January announcement that they’re easing the requirements for the initial qualifying test. Instead of swimming 50-yards in 35 seconds, this year, recruits just have to swim the 50 yards in 45 seconds to qualify for training. The final testing requirements to get hired remain the same.

Flying used to be an event. The height of luxury. Now, without exaggeration, it is equivalent to a round trip on the A train. I suppose it still is an “event,” but a very different kind of event. In case you couldn’t tell, I have been traveling a bit. Included in my travels were a couple of flights. Before each flight, as the time for me to arrive at the airport grew nearer, I would be overcome with a feeling of dread. Dread, not because I am afraid of flying, but dread because of the flying process. There is not one enjoyable

thing about flying. Sadly, these days, the highlight of most trips is a free can of soda and some cookies. Murphy’s Law says that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Well, when it comes to flying, it is more like anybody that can act dumb and annoying, will act dumb and annoying. After a flight, it is not easy to have much hope for humanity. Maybe as an act of kindness (probably not), airlines do not try to hide the fact that this is going to be an awful experience. They let you know right away. Let’s say you had a ride

to the airport, got there smoothly, and the departure drop-off area was not six-Toyota-Rav4s deep (bear with me, I know we are already living in fantasy land). You enter the airport and have to check your bag. It used to be that you waited on a line for 30-minutes and then did your bag check at the counter. Now, in a marvelous feat of pure efficiency, you check your bag at a kiosk (if there is one working), and then you wait on a 30-minute line to go to the counter and, er… check your bag… But who cares? You just got rid of all the weight! The big heavy bags are gone, it’s just you and your two personal items (for the love of everything good and holy, it better be two or else… we will come back to that) so things are starting to look up and it’s off you go.

Airport security is a strange place. I understand the rational thinking behind them. They

are, unfortunately, a necessary evil. But I will say, they have all the makings of a scene straight out of a postapocalyptic movie except there are a bunch of people wearing Hawaiian shirts and cowboy hats. Lines, inside of lines, that lead to more lines. It is “Inception” but with lines instead of dreams. Within each line are always multiple lanes that you must choose between. It doesn’t matter which you pick because there is no right answer. You emerge, with no shoes on, and it is go-time. There is nothing that can stop you now!

There are two, and only two, scenarios once you are out of security and heading towards your gate: You are either two hours early or you have two minutes before your gate closes. Being perfectly on time for a flight is a myth, like leprechauns and the Jets getting Aaron Rodgers. If you have mastered this art, please let me know.

The time has finally come.

MCVEIGHING IN

Continued from Page 5

They call the first group to board, and everyone remains seated and patiently waits for their group to be called and everyone stands up and creates a giant huddle behind the gate. Each time a new group is called, this now single-minded mass, moves, as one, closer and closer to the gate. On the plane, you are allowed only two personal items, one for under the seat in front of you and one for the overhead compartment. As I have recently learned, this is becoming a sticking point for airlines now. A fanny pack around the waist (or over the shoulder, as is now “cool” I am told) counts as a personal item and don’t you dare think otherwise. “Consolidation” is the new buzz word around airports. You have survived the crucible that is the pre-boarding process and are ready to board the plane.

The goal of these airlines is to make as much money as possible on each flight. I get it. But, at the same time, I just don’t get it. It is beyond my comprehension that there can be flights that are over-booked. That is a business model that is designed with one thing in mind, and that thing is not the passengers.

Your group is called, and it is time to squeeze the sardines into their can. Seats on flights are not made for human beings, at least not fully grown adults. You know in elementary schools, when they have those small desks, and parents go in for a parent-teacher conferences and have to try and sit at those? That is the equivalent of today’s airplane seats. Even first-class seats are now just old, normal plane seats. I am an aisle seat guy. The extra leg room, when not being run over by a cart, is the only thing that keeps me sane. The window seat is tight, but I suppose still bearable. The middle seat is the ninth circle of hell—that is what eternal damnation looks like.

The wheels touch down, you made it. Wrong! This next leg of

the trip is debatably the worst. One does not simply “get off” a plane. When a plane lands, it likes to act like I do trying to find a parking spot on 116th Street. First, there never seems to be an open gate. You taxi around aimlessly for what feels like an eternity. You finally get there and as soon as the plane stops, every single person feels the need to stand up and retrieve their luggage. This is my worst nightmare. My absolute favorite is those in the back of the plane that try to shoot up the aisle, before the people in front of them have gotten off. As I said, I am an aisle sitter. I just want to let you know that if you try this move on one of my flights, there will be hell to pay. Unless you have a connecting flight, you are staying right where you are until everyone in front of me has moved. I bet those people are running because they probably double parked their car for their entire trip.

There are so many other parts of this experience that I haven’t even touched on (“reclining” seats, entertainment apps A.K.A. no TV, etc.). The only redeeming quality of flying seems to be that it gets you where you want to go much faster than other ways. The industry has realized that it is such a necessity that it can do whatever it pleases, and we can whine about it as much as we like, but I don’t think it will ever change for the better. I, like almost everyone else, will continue to squeeze into smaller and smaller seats and enjoy my free ginger ale.

Today, March 30, is Major League Baseball’s Opening Day. The Yankees play at home at 1:05 p.m. and the Mets play in Miami at 4:10 p.m. Maybe with baseball, it will also start to feel like spring around here!  We can only hope! *****

As we mentioned a few weeks ago, Fr. Jim Cunningham, of St. Francis de Sales parish, has found a match for a living kidney donor from within his own community once again. This week Katie McFadden has the incredible story of Fr. Jim, his donor Mike Coughlin, and how that match came to be on page 12. *****

Last week, after we went to press,

a local fisherman on Beach 38th Street and Norton Drive discovered a large stash of stolen guns in Jamaica Bay. The NYPD was able to recover three rifles and over a dozen handguns which they have since connected to a burglary in Putnam County. *****

The Riis Park Bathhouse has officially received funding for its massive revitalization project. The group involved has closed on $47.5 million intended to bring the historic building, built in 1932, back to its former glory. The project, which includes a $15 million historic tax credit, plans to bring new restaurants, a bar, a pool, event spaces and even 28 hotel rooms.

Work is set to begin this spring with a phased opening planned for 2024. We can only hope that this will lead to the further enhancement of the NPS area which is so desperately needed.

*****

The race for City Council District 32 just got a little smaller. Mike Scala, who had declared as the Democratic challenger to incumbent Councilwoman Joann Ariola, has dropped out of the race. As of now, Joann Ariola, who is also facing an unopposed Republican primary this summer, is now poised to run unopposed in this fall’s election. *****

What do Netflix, Hulu and other streaming services have in common with the MTA? Not much. Except for the fact that New York Assembly members have proposed a new 4% tax on all streaming services in New York in order to raise funds for the MTA. What’s next? The Verrazano Bridge needs a little work so there will be a 10% tax on poppy seed bagels.

Only 56 days until the can’t miss publication of the year, the 2023 Rockaway Times Summer Guide, is released! That means only 15 more days to reserve your ad space. Don’t wait, reserve your place today in the peninsula’s go-to resource for everyone’s favorite time of the year! *****

One final reminder that the new sanitation rules go into effect this Saturday, April 1. Cans are permitted to go out at 6 p.m. and loose trash bags at 8 p.m. *****

Next week, many local schools begin their spring breaks. If you are going away, enjoy your trip. If you are staying local, consider taking a trip on the ferry into the city and take advantage of all this great city has to offer.  See Tracey McCormick’s ideas on page 29 for some things to do while in the city!   *****

The next meeting of the Rockaway Republican Club will feature former New York gubernatorial candidate, Andrew Giuliani. The meeting will take place on April 4 at 7 p.m., at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club.

Episcopal Health Services Inc., (EHS) received $11,564,000 in grants through the Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program III (SHCFTP III) for the establishment of a new Radiation Oncology Center, an Endoscopy Unit and an Adult Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP). Administered by the New York State Department of Health and the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York, the Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Programs support efforts to reduce health care costs and improve the health outcomes of New Yorkers by expanding access to inpatient, primary, preventative, and other ambulatory care services.

"These funds will enable our health care providers and facilities to further modernize and integrate health care services to ensure that New Yorkers receive access to the medical care they require now and for future generations,” Acting State Health Commissioner James McDonald said. “New York is a national leader in providing first-rate health care thanks to Governor Hochul's dedication to making sure our health care systems have the resources necessary to deliver the best care possible for all New Yorkers."

ing a sustainable system of care that provides safe, high quality, health care to the residents of the Rockaways and Five Towns in a cost-effective manner, minimizing duplication of services. It is especially vital to open a Radiation Oncology Unit within the hospital’s catchment area, as cancer is one of the leading causes of premature death in the Rockaways. In fact, when compared to New York City and Queens County, the communities of the Rockaways see higher than average cancer rates for various cancers (471.7 new cases of cancer per 100,000 per year compared to the NYC rate of 442.6 per year). Through New York State DOH cancer data and SPARCS data, the findings indicate a clear need for enhanced access to cancer care in the Rockaways.

The new Endoscopy Unit will help to close the health care disparity gap in the community by increasing access to colorectal screenings and diagnostic modalities for the early and timely detection of colorectal cancer. The project will create a safe, convenient, state of the art endoscopy unit that will provide E.H.S.’s service area with increased access to cancer care services aimed at curing cancer, controlling the growth of the cancer or alleviating systems caused by cancer and support the goal of improving the health and quality of life of residents of the Rockaways.

The grants awarded will build and equip a 5,000-square foot outpatient radiation/oncology unit, a 5,000-square foot endoscopy unit and an adult comprehensive psychiatric program (CPEP) within Episcopal Health Service’s existing, and newly renovated, Emergency Department.

“These significant grants will increase the community’s access to state-of-the art services and strengthen our commitment to maintaining and positively increasing the health outcomes of our communities, specifically in areas that have a greater need for advanced level of care,” Gerard Walsh, Chief Executive Officer, Episcopal Health Services, said.

The Adult Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) will be a 911 receiving facility for psychiatric crises, it will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and consist of a psychiatric emergency room providing triage and evaluation, extended observation beds (up to 72 hours) and mobile crisis outreach in the community to include assessment and crisis intervention. This expansion of the Episcopal Health Services Inc., (EHS) Psychiatric program is in addition to the recently announced plans for a complete renovation of the hospital’s 18,000 square foot Behavioral Health Unit.

“Who is James Cunningham?” a nurse at New York Columbia Presbyterian Hospital inquired when Belle Harbor resident Mike Coughlin called saying he wanted to see if he was a match for someone special in need of a kidney donation. After all, Mike was one of many willing to step up to the plate for this man who has a close connection with the Big Guy Upstairs and is well beloved in his parish — St. Francis de Sales’ Associate Pastor Father Jim Cunningham. With a match made in heaven, Fr. Jim is about to get a new kidney and a third lease on life.

With a tentative date of April 25, Fr. Jim is ready to go under the knife — again. The beloved SFDS pastor’s kidney troubles began shortly after he joined the parish. Seven years ago, he was diagnosed with late-stage kidney disease after having some bloodwork done. The diagnosis came as a shock, as it wasn’t something that ran in his family. “I had gone to see a nephrologist at Lenox Hill, and she said, ‘you need a kidney transplant.’ She didn’t say ‘your kidneys are failing.’ It was, ‘you need to do this,’ like a done deal,” Cunningham recalled. His siblings and cousins were tested, but unfortunately, none were a match. Before putting out a mass call for help, a friend decided to answer the call, without being asked. “My friend, Pat Nash, felt convinced he could do this and when he was tested, I resisted. I didn’t want him to, but he insisted. I was getting out of dialysis one night and he called and said he was a match,” Cunningham said.

Seemingly, it was a match made in heaven. Nash had known Fr. Jim from his days at Good Shepherd in Brooklyn. But their personal connection was the late Firefighter Timmy Stackpole. Nash, also an FDNY firefighter, and Fr. Jim had been good friends with the firefighter who was killed on 9/11. “A part of Pat felt Timmy was tell-

ing him to do this. Timmy is constantly present in our lives. He’s been gone 21 years, but his name comes up probably every day. The guy was just something else, and he had an influence on so many lives. I find him to be pure goodness and faith and his impact is overwhelming. I can feel his presence from heaven constantly in my life and he was an amazing friend to both me and Pat,” Cunningham said.

In March 2016, Nash underwent surgery to give one of his kidneys to Fr. Jim. “It was full speed ahead and he never looked back. For seven years, I had this great life thanks to him,” Cunningham said. “I felt like Timmy had something to do with it the first time around, and I’m sure he had something to do with this the second time around.”

In January of last year, Fr. Jim’s bloodwork once again started showing abnormalities. “There was a blockage and they tried to treat it with different procedures including putting a tube in and I had to go every two weeks to have it checked. Finally, in May, they said it wasn’t working and I needed to have surgery in June,” Cunningham said. That surgery turned into four surgeries between June 15 and July 22. He spent the summer recuperating, until he began to get sick again in September 2022. “I had to go to the hospital, and I developed Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA),” he said. Between MRSA and having Covid twice, Fr. Jim’s kidney levels began to elevate again, showing signs that his kidney was failing. In February, he had a biopsy done. “I found out on a Friday that I had to go back on dialysis,” Cunningham said. A few days later, St. Francis de Sales Church shared a flyer on social media, advising the parish of Fr. Jim’s kidney troubles and asking if anyone with O+ blood would consider getting tested to donate a kidney. The flyer was shared by The Rockaway Times and even posted on the window of Fr. Jim’s favorite restaurant, Last Stop. But

even before that call for action, something else was at work.

In June of last year, the sisterin-law of Mike Coughlin, Mary Moran, had donated a kidney to a stranger. “Two years ago, my mother-in-law, Diane Erhard, was sick and she ended up in St. John’s and died in October 2021. While there, my sister-in-law, Mary Moran found out about a nurse at St. John’s that needed a kidney. She found out this lady was a mother and said, ‘I just lost my mother, how terrible if someone else lost their mother,’ so she started getting tested,” Coughlin said. Mary wound up not being a match for the nurse, but still went through with donating a kidney to a stranger. As a eucharistic minister at SFDS, Fr. Jim had known Erhard well. It was at Erhard’s funeral that he learned of Mary’s decision, and he went on to visit her after the surgery in June 2022. Mike was also inspired by Mary’s selfless act. “I went to visit her after the surgery and she said, ‘Michael Coughlin, you can do this.’ I said, ‘I think I can,’” he recalled. Before he knew it, Coughlin was doing research and signing up to be tested at NYU Langone, a donor hospital that’s a bit closer to Rockaway.

“I finished 80% of testing and everything was coming back good when one Saturday morning,

Mary texts me and says Fr. Jim isn’t doing too well,” he said. Shortly, after, Mike, a retired NYPD officer, texted Fr. Jim, offering to come to his rescue. “The morning after they said I had to go back on dialysis, Mike calls me and said, ‘I heard you’re not feeling well. I signed up to be a donor at NYU for a stranger, but if you’re sick, I’d like to switch to Columbia,’” Cunningham recalled. By that Monday, Mike had filled out an application and called Columbia to transfer his records. Meanwhile, after the call to action for a donor by SFDS, other parishioners had also started calling Columbia Presbyterian. “The hospital couldn’t keep up with the number of people. They said to me, ‘Who are you?’ I said, ‘What do you mean?’ She said, ‘We haven’t gotten this many in a long time.’ I started laughing and said, ‘It’s because of my parish,’” Cunningham said. “They’re backlogged and people are still being tested.”

But Fr. Jim already had the perfect match. “They had to take my blood and his blood and mix it for a week,” Coughlin, said. “They said it was a perfect match, not just a good match, it’s perfect.”

And he wasn’t the only one. “Mike called me and said he was a match and the next day,

another parishioner called me and said she was a match, too,” Cunningham said. Altogether, Fr. Jim has had three matches so far, while others continue to get tested. “They don’t stop the process until the transplant takes place,” Cunningham said.

To have such an amazing response is overwhelming for Fr. Jim. “It is very overwhelming and very humbling and it’s just once again an example of what it means to live in this community of St. Francis and Rockaway. You see this over and over again, the generosity of people, and it’s constant, and it makes you realize, this is a gift,” Cunningham said.

Coughlin remains humble about being able to give that gift to Fr. Jim. “It really is an honor to give it to him because I think the other donors would want to do it too. The whole community wants to do it. I think it just happened to be me because I finished the testing early. It could’ve been anyone,” Coughlin said.

But Fr. Jim is thankful that Mike is his match. “He’s an unbelievable person. It’s not a surprise to me because if you know him and his family, this doesn’t surprise you,” Cunningham said.

After all, it takes a special person to say they’re “looking forward” to surgery. “I’m looking

forward to it. When I was a cop, I had stopped a robbery, and I felt so good about it. This time, I know I’m doing something good. I’ll be proud that day,” Coughlin said.

That day on Columbia Presbyterian’s calendar is April 25, when Coughlin and Cunning -

ham will simultaneously go under the knife, and Fr. Jim will once again receive the gift of life. And there’s plenty of support surrounding both men. “I’ve had prayers coming from every parish I’ve been at. People have been so supportive, but St. Francis is really different. Even the kids in the school have done fundraising. They had a green shirt day on St. Patrick’s Day and raised $546 for the nephrology department at Columbia in my honor,” Cunningham said. Coughlin’s job at St. Edmunds, his wife, and his own kids are also supportive. So much so that he has already inspired someone to pay it forward. “We’re driving with the kids one day and my wife, Anne, asks them how they feel about me having the surgery and my son Max says, ‘I feel great. I want to do it in the future.’ He’s only 17,” Coughlin said with pride.

A Ferry Welcome Spring

While we manifest more sunshine, here are a few seasonal activities to welcome in the warmer weather and longer days.

A weatherproof option that will surely put a little Spring in your step is a visit to the annual Macy’s Flower Show, which runs from March 26 to April 10. Fashion house Dior will design the mezzanine level of one of New York City’s oldest retailers into a dreamlike garden free of admission for visitors.

If you haven’t made Easter plans and are feeling festive, be sure to grab (or make) your Easter bonnet and head up to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, beginning on April 9 at 10 a.m., for the Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival. You can choose to participate or just spectate the pageant of people wearing large over-the-top hats. The tradition of the Easter parade began after the Civil War as a “fashion promenade,” rooted in the custom of a Sunday walk following

religious service. Wealthy New Yorkers would emerge from their respective houses of worship along Fifth Avenue to stroll down the street. Nowadays, the parade spans just a few short blocks but still packs all the fashion and fun it has for decades.

Back at the Seaport, Pier 17 is hosting Easter activities for young and old. On Saturday, April 8, take the ferry into Pier 11 and quickly walk over to Seaport Square for an Easter Egg Hunt, spring themed crafts and maybe an appearance from the Easter Bunny. Malibu Farm is pairing a special family-style brunch with Traditional Ukrainian Egg Decorating Workshop for families at 11 a.m. and family-style dinner for adults starting at 5 p.m. Tickets start at $98 and can be purchased at theseaport.nyc/events.

March 31 marks the official start to outdoor eating and drinking season according to Smorgasburg. The famous outdoor food bazaar opens weekly

on Fridays at The Oculus on the corner of Fulton St. and Church St. from 11 a.m. to 7p.m. Stop by and eat from dozens of local vendors offering unique bites ranging from Texas style BBQ, dim sum, sandwiches, and more—just a ferry ride away!

Before you head into the city, make sure to check the new NYC Ferry Spring Schedule. The new times will go into effect Monday, April 3, 2023, visit www. ferry.nyc for the most up to date routes and times.

Riis Bathhouse Revitalization Gets Funded

The Riis Park Bathhouse has received the funding needed to proceed with revitalization. On Tuesday, March 28, CBSK Developers, Brooklyn Bazaar and Aulder Capital closed on $47.5 million in financing for the rehabilitation of the historic bathhouse at Jacob Riis Park. After sitting underutilized for nearly half a century, the large-scale preservation project will restore the 1932 building to its former glory and transform the waterfront into an active hub with new restaurants, a bar, pool, event spaces and 28 hotel rooms. The project is financed through a $32.5 million construction loan from Procida and a $15 million historic tax credit equity investment from Foss & Company.

“Today’s closing is a major step forward toward the revitalization and rejuvenation of the iconic Jacob Riis Bathhouse,” said Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. “The restoration of this historic art deco structure is

emblematic of the Rockaway Peninsula’s continuing recovery from the devastating impact of Hurricane Sandy and is a symbol of the brighter future we are creating for the Rockaways, its residents, and its many visitors. I look forward to the start of this restoration, and I can’t wait to visit this amazing structure once the work is finished.”

This extensive overhaul will breathe new life into the historic bathhouse, starting with a full restoration of the building’s landmarked façade, windows and turrets. The project will also bring back many of the bathhouse’s original features – it was once home to two restaurants, a cafeteria, and numerous concession stands. The restoration will add a range of similar amenities for the public, including a rooftop restaurant, ground floor eateries, a casual beachfront bar, and retailers stocking beach supplies such as sunblock and towels. The pro-

ject also includes 28 hotel rooms, a catering hall and multiple event spaces. In the building’s outdoor courtyard, there will be a new pool and lounge areas. Plans for the project underwent careful review by New York's State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and will preserve the building’s famed Byzantine, Moorish and Moderne influences.

“The revitalization of the bathhouse will bring new jobs, commerce and entertainment to the Peninsula. This is a huge step

for ‘The People’s Beach’ and an amazing new chapter for our community. I cannot wait to see the finished project and want to thank the project developers and everyone involved for their vision and work,” Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato said.

“Every year, we are seeing more and more investment into the Rockaway peninsula – investment that is helping to restore the area to its former position as a premier

summertime destination,” City Councilmember Joann Ariola said. “This revitalization at the Riis Park Bathhouse is a major step forward towards that goal of restoring Rockaway to its former vacation-destination glory, and I can’t wait to see what kind of opportunity this will no doubt bring to the residents of the area.”

“Our vision for this project centers on preserving the storied past of the Jacob Riis Park Bathhouse while revitalizing it to serve today's beachgoers, and this closing milestone brings us one step closer to achieving that goal,” CBSK's Scott Shnay said. “The building has been an iconic landmark on the Queens' waterfront for decades and our restoration plan for the bathhouse will transform it into a modern beachfront hub, complete with a full range of amenities for the public. We look forward to work getting underway and unveiling a new summertime destination for

New Yorkers and visitors to enjoy.”

“After years of working in the Rockaways alongside this resilient community, we are thrilled to see our plan for revitalizing the bathhouse at Jacob Riis Park move forward,” said Brooklyn Bazaar Co-Founders Aaron Broudo and Belvy Klein. “This building sits on one of the most treasured stretches of beachfront in the city and our vision will realize its full potential by adding new uses, from exciting dining options to beach concessions, all while preserving the historic elements of the structure. Thank you to our elected officials for their unwavering support, and to our community and project partners for their help in getting this project off the ground.”

“The overhaul of the historic bathhouse will restore a beloved beachfront institution, and we are very excited to work with such an experienced team on this transformative project,”  Brian Foley, a partner at Procida Funding and Advisors, said. “Now that we have put together the capital, we look forward to work getting underway.”

In 2017, the National Park Service (NPS) selected Rockaway Beach boardwalk concessionaire Brooklyn Bazaar to renovate the facility following a competitive RFP process, and in October 2022, both parties entered into a long-term lease agreement. The development partner on the project, prominent New York City real estate development and management firm CBSK, has successfully completed numerous complex ground-up developments, adaptive reuse projects and repositionings in its 50-year history. Some of their leading hospitality projects include Ruschmeyers, Pod Brooklyn, the Hotel Kinsley and INNESS. Recent residential and mixed-use projects include 10 Bond Street, 40 Gansevoort Street, and 363 Lafayette Street.

Known for their expertise in restoring, revitalizing and reusing historic buildings and sites, architecture and planning firm Beyer Blinder Belle is leading the design for the adaptive reuse project, with construction

set to begin later this spring and a phased opening expected for 2024.

The project utilizes best practices for coastal resiliency and sustainability, including the implementation of Aquafence technology as part of a careful flood proofing plan and the creation of a Zero Waste plan. The project team is also planning to reintroduce native plants within its landscaping design. All development plans have also undergone extensive review by the NPS and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office for Coastal Management to ensure they do not interfere with the existing wildlife or the local habitat.

Your Voice…Your Community…Your Platform

March is Irish Heritage Month, and every week this month, The Rockaway Times saluted local Irish Americans; expanding the conversation on how the people of the Emerald Isle have affected Rockaway’s communal fabric. There’s an Irish proverb that reads, “Having somewhere to go is home, having someone to love is family, having both is a blessing.” Each individual we spotlighted—Tom Murphy of Curran’s Superior Meats, Sean Sheridan of The BayHouse and Mark Edwards of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians—all shared that same sentiment. Whether you have a “wee bit of Irish,” or not, at the core of what makes Rockaway, and its residents’, standout is the cherished pride in belonging to a neighborhood family that cares. To conclude our Irish Heritage Month series, three locals share anecdotes about their Rockaway Irish experience.

Broad Channel (BC) is separated from Rockaway by the Cross Bay Bridge. However, besides sharing the same 11693 zip code with Rockaway Beach, the community is very close-knit and proud of their bayside family-oriented community. With no major supermarkets or gas stations nearby, what is it about BC that makes residents proudly declare what RT columnist, Peter Mahon says, “Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else? Channelers weigh in:

“In 1982, I moved to 105-00 Dayton Towers West in Rockaway, and from then to now, the Irish community made me feel welcome, and I’m still here, and don’t wanna leave. I’m Italian, and I’ve personally experienced their support and love. One example is when I worked for Leon Locke at The Wave, delivering newspapers to over 80 stores. When I got into the business of selling cars, Leon would let me put classified ads in the newspaper for free. So, because Leon Locke took a liking to me, I really went into the car business. Then when I broke up with my girlfriend, I lived in my car for a few days and was gonna move back to Brooklyn, but Leon got me an apartment at 78-00 Dayton Towers East, and I’ve never looked back since. Also, another friend of mind, God bless his soul, an Irish local who

owned the Lightship Restaurant and Tiki Bar, where Burn Fitness and NY Community Bank is now located on Beach 105th and Rockaway Beach Blvd., would let me sell cars out of the parking lot. The Irish in Rockaway are a united community, and really step up when there is a tragedy or need. When my girlfriend and I took custody of her son’s baby, just to show you how beautiful this community is, people gave us clothes and toys. Even The Graybeards handed my girlfriend a check for $2,000 to start the baby’s college fund. A lot of people have helped us spiritually, mentally, physically, financially. You can't find that anywhere, but Rockaway. I remember one night at 9 p.m., I get a text that my then 20-year-old daughter was in Connolly’s. This is how this community looks out. Rockaway is a very unique, rare bird. When local bartender, George Ferguson, passed away, the outpouring of love for that man and his family was unbelievable. The Irish community really cares for the Rockaway family at large. It makes you feel good.”

“I grew up in the Beach 40s with many Irish families living between Beach 43rd and 47th Street. Then, Rockaway felt like a small neighborhood. Everybody knew what block everyone lived on and looked out for each other. We would walk around the neighborhood, knowing that the older ones were looking out for us. In the summer, a lot of outsiders rented summer bungalows, and as kids, we felt proud to live in Rockaway because this is where everyone wanted to be. Many assume that only the Beach 90s had a large Irish community, but Far Rockaway has a lot of Irish history. With Mott Avenue being the main shopping area on the peninsula,

there were many Irish pubs including Johnny's on Beach 9th Street, Ye Olde Tavern and O’Gara’s on Mott Avenue, and more. Where I lived in the Beach 40s, there were two pubs within two blocks: Blue Water on Beach 45th Street and Graf’s on Beach 47th. Many of these pubs sponsored youth softball teams. I’m second-generation Irish. All of my grandparents were from Donegal. Like many Irish immigrants, they migrated to Brooklyn. They weren't very welcome, but with hard work, they did what they had to do to survive. For example, my relatives told me a story about my grandmother, who became a widow with two young children when my grandfather died. To make a living to support her children, she made gin in the bathtub. Our families taught us to be resilient, hardworking and independent, regardless of the obstacles. Today I live in the Beach 90s raising my own family. Rockaway has changed, but as the saying goes, ‘Once you get the sand between your toes, you could never leave.’”

RICHIE KNOTT Brother, Knights of Columbus Rockaway Park, NY

“As a young boy growing up in Rockaway, one of my fondest memories was living in Marcell’s Court (currently Bay Towers). Marcell’s Court was a bungalow community that existed until the late 1960s and was located between 98th and 101st Street between the Freeway and

Beach Channel Drive. The Court was mainly an Irish family-oriented cluster of bungalows with most of the families coming from Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan and the Bronx to spend their summers at the beach. A few families, including mine, lived there year-round. As kids, we were fortunate as we had our Rockaway friends and our summer friends. We would play outside from early morning ‘til dusk. While at night, the adults would stroll up the street to Irish Town.”

MORTGAGE LOAN BARGAIN?

SUMMER EFFECTS

Fannie Mae loan conforming limits have been increased to just under 1.1 million in high-cost areas. Loans above these limits are called “jumbos.” The rates on jumbos vary with supply and demand. Lately, jumbo rates have been .5% to .75% below loans for a 30-year fixed rate. Jumbo loans are one method to obtain a lower mortgage rate.

The summer season has mixed effects on the Rockaway real estate market. On the one hand, we are a beachfront community and the draw of the summer activities does bring people here for: beaches, swimming, cycling, running, surfing, organized teams for kids and adults (although the pandemic may crimp some of these this year; thankfully the “end” is in sight). On the other hand, some sellers are reluctant to sell during the summer because they enjoy the aforementioned activities and don’t want to give them up so fast!

Hybrid adjustable rate mortgages  (hybrid arms)  are fixed for the first three years, five years, seven years or 10 years, and the payments are amortized as if the loan was a regular 30year fixed rate. After the initial fixed rate period, the rate adjusts versus an index with caps on how much it can change.

Rates on arms are about .5% below a 30-year fixed rate currently. A combination—a jumbo hybrid loan—can maximize the reduction in the mortgage rate. My friend just got 5.375% on a 10 year/1 year jumbo hybrid arm. That’s fixed at 5.375% for ten years. The monthly cost is $560/100k. He plans on selling or refinancing before the ten year period ends.

Palm Sunday is this Sunday, April 2. Good Friday is on April 7. Easter Sunday is April 9. Passover begins Wednesday evening April 5 and ends Thursday night April 13. No work is permitted on April 6, 7, 12 and 13 for the observant. Happy Holidays to all. Call me. Love, Robin.

It can be harder to sell real estate during the summer due to vacations by buyers and sellers alike. Summer activities can also occupy people instead of allowing them to focus on the home sale process.

The spring season has been generally good for our real estate market. There has been action across the board in all price categories with an emphasis on the range below $1 million (approx). Prices have firmed up within the framework of recent comparable sales and in some cases are creeping higher. Inventory levels remain very low.

Call me, Love, Robin. 718-490-9463

Fraud! Check Scam Hits Rockaway

With all the fast-paced data theft, credit cons, and cyber scams out there, the latest consumer fraud to hit Rockaway is low tech, very old school and hitting people all over the peninsula.

But up to now, most people had never heard of “check washing” until it happened to them.

As one resident explained, “In January, I sent a check out for $175 to a company in Florida. A few weeks later, I noticed the check hadn’t been cashed. I kept checking my account. Then, suddenly, I find a couple thousand dollars is missing from my bank account!”

It turns out scammers stole his mailed check. Then, using ordinary chemicals like bleach or nail polish remover, they wiped the name of the company it was made out to and the original amount. “The only thing they left was the date and my signature,” he said.

They then wrote in whatever name they wanted to cash the check under

and a totally new amount. In this case, his original $175 check became one for $6,830, set to be cashed out from his unsuspecting account.

According to AARP, “Crooks steal checks left in mailboxes or remove mail deposited in U.S. Postal Service collection boxes by using keys stolen from mail carriers or by fishing them out with string and something sticky — like rodent glue traps or a glue-covered bottle.”

The man noted his check “had been cashed at some bank in Connecticut. They don’t even go into the bank except to set up the account (to cash or deposit the stolen checks with). They just take out whatever amount they want. Or they get some high school kid to open an account and say, ‘Hey, want to make some money? Go cash this check, and we’ll give you $300 from it.’ This way, if something happens, the kid, or whoever, gets in trouble, and they’re nowhere near it. But they can clean out your whole account.”

Thieves may also copy, use or sell your routing and account numbers to

make fraudulent purchases with.

Fortunately, the man went straight to his bank once he noticed the discrepancy. “They were very helpful. I was able to get my money back. I was lucky. But I heard about somebody who lost $40,000 that way. Imagine if I hadn’t seen it right away?”

Another Rockaway woman was not so lucky. “I had two postal money orders washed. One for $50. Then another, for $358.60, for my brother’s rent. I put them in the box at the post office in Lawrence so they could pick

SCAM HITS

Continued from Page 28 it up in the morning and mail it right out.” That was February 1. Neither check made it to their destination. “I had to pay $14 to have a trace put on both money orders. The $50 they couldn’t find. The other was cashed on February 13 by some unknown person. They washed the name and changed it to some guy’s name who was giving it to another person, going into some unknown account.”

It might seem like a printed-out money order, especially a postal one, would be more secure. It’s true, she said, “they can’t wash out the amount on a money order. But they can change the name on it and who it is going to.”

She did go to the Nassau County Police Department’s 4th Precinct to report the incident. “They took the information and gave me a letter that said it was fraud,” she said.

To date, however, she has been unable to recover any of her money. So, besides the time and funds spent trying to resolve the issue, she is now out of pocket for yet another $50 owed and another $358.60 for her brother’s rent.

As one of the NYPD’s 100th Precinct Community Affairs Officers, PO Victor Boamah often addresses groups to bring awareness of check washing and other scams.

“Seniors are affected the most,” he said. “Two weeks ago, we had someone who went to the postal mailbox by Beach Channel Drive. She mailed her mortgage payment. When she put it in, two to three weeks later the bank said they never received it. They found that someone had gotten the check.”

He noted overall, such incidents at the 100th Precinct have been decreasing. But “the key is to employ all methods available to prevent you from becoming a victim in the first place,” Boamah said.

If you are mailing checks for bills and such, he said, “mail it directly inside the post office.” If you must use a mailbox, “make sure you put your envelopes all the way in the slot.”

Even better, Boamah suggests paying your bills online. Nearly all service providers offer, even encourage, the option to pay directly from your checking account. Customers can sign up for automatic payments or opt to go online and authorize an individ-

ual payment each month. Either over the phone or in-person, most banks will assist their customers in setting this up.

Boamah also recommends signing up for automatic alerts every time a check is presented for payment from your accounts. Also, he suggests credit monitoring sites, like Credit Karma, which alert you if anyone is fraudulently trying to apply for a loan or get a credit card using your information. But “if you find out you are a victim, don’t hesitate to call 911 right away,” Boamah said.

And as the first Rockaway resident

mentioned advises, be vigilant. “Now, when I’m having my coffee every morning at 8 a.m., I check my accounts online. I feel bad for the people who don’t usually check their accounts, who don’t go online, and just get a paper statement every month. ‘Cause then it’s too late.”

To schedule a presentation on check washing and/or other scam prevention, please contact the Community Affairs unit at the 100th Precinct at 718-318-4233 or at the 101st Precinct’s unit at 718-868-3441.

Everything, Everywhere, All at Once

Yes, “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once” was the big winner at the Oscars this year. A bizarre story about the metaverse,

whatever that is, with time travelling characters making no sense at all. This is what goes for an Oscar winner these days, who knows maybe someday we will look back and think, “what

a classic!” But for now, I think it’s just some weird movie with some very disturbing undertones.

Which brings me to Rockaway. If you have come out of hibernation recently, you will notice that there is construction work everywhere, all at once! The beach project is live uptown, midtown and downtown. Who knows if any humans will be able to use the beach this year. Never mind that we had a mild winter when much of this work could have been done, the powers that be have decided to do all the work everywhere this summer. What am I talking about you say? Well, the rock jetties are still being installed, the dunes are being rebuilt with cement and metal and then covered in sand, entrances are being reimagined into wiggly paths, the Neponsit Home is being knocked down and various houses are being knocked down for more condos. Some of this makes sense, but why all at once?

I also don’t understand why the rock jetties seem to be more on the sand then out in the water. The older built jetties all reach out into the water and allow beach walkers to walk continuously rather than around. And doesn’t nature eventually take its course? I mean won’t the sand that covers the cement and metal barriers eventually blow away exposing dangerous materials on the beach to navigate around, especially for kids. Granted I’ll be long gone, but someone, like our grandchildren will have to deal with that, no?

And this notion that a seawall should be built across Jamaica Bay that will somehow magically protect everyone from the bay during a storm? How about the impact on the health of the bay if only a trickle can get through that sea gate? Not to mention the impact on the wildlife. Sometimes I wonder if any of us will even recognize Rockaway when all this is done. And knowing the government, be it federal, state or city – won’t they come

back and ask for their pound of flesh in repayment? Did I hear more shelters and denser housing? Forget about driving, they don’t want anyone doing that anywhere, anytime, and never at once. I’m usually an optimist, but this much change, especially when implemented by bureaucrats who don’t live here, is unsettling.

Speaking of change and unsettling, St. Francis College, the alma mater of my sister, brother, son, nephews, and me, recently eliminated their entire Athletic Program, this coming on the heels of their move from beautiful Brooklyn Heights to Downtown Brooklyn. The school is in deep financial trouble and their current President over the last seven years has been asked not to come back. Apparently, a planned sale of the old campus did not go through, which leaves a big financial vacuum to fill. I understand that every small college in America is facing the same issues. But SFC has a large and successful alumni group that could have been leveraged rather than alienated. This is an example of Nothing, Nowhere, All at Once!

I guess what I am thinking is that we need transparency, commitment, and involvement on a constant basis here, there, and everywhere or Rockaway could go by the way of St. Francis College, and that would be a crying shame for all times.

There are several dog breeds that are considered hypoallergenic or low allergy. These breeds produce fewer allergens in their skin, saliva and urine, making them a better choice for people with allergies. It is important to understand that no dog breed is 100% hypoallergenic and some people with allergies may still have a reaction to these breeds.

Among the most popular hypoallergenic breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) include: the Poodle, Bichon Frise, Maltese, Shih Tzu, Portuguese Water Dog, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Chinese Crested and the Irish Water Spaniel. The most popular of these breeds is the Poodle. According to the AKC, the Poodle

HYPOALLERGENIC DOGS

has ranked among the top ten most popular dog breed in the country for many years. The breed is known for its intelligence, elegance and of course, its hypoallergenic coat which sheds minimally and produces less dander than other breeds. Poodles also come in three sizes, standard, miniature and toy, making them a versatile breed for different lifestyles. They come in a variety of colors as well. The Bichon Frise, Maltese and Shih Tzu follow behind the Poodle in popularity of hypoallergenic pups.

The Bichon is a small white dog weighing on average 12 to 18 lbs. They have an enthusiastic personality and a friendly nature. This dog is a lover, not a fighter, and is known for their friendly and charming demeaner.

The Maltese usually weighs less than seven pounds and is a true lap dog with a gentle temperament. Most

dogs were bred to perform a certain job. This is not the case with the Maltese. Their sole role is to keep you happy as they have done for royal families throughout history.

The Shih Tzu usually weighs 9 to 16 pounds and comes in many colors. This breed has a short muzzle with an underbite. It is a very docile dog that gets along with people and other pets. Rarely will you find a snippy Shih Tzu.

There are designer dogs, or hybrids, that are mixed breeds that were bred specifically for their hypoallergenic traits and became very popular in the 1990s and 2000s. Unlike some mixed breeds, these dogs are generally bred from two purebred parents. One of the first popular designer dogs was the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle, now known as the Labradoodle. This dog was bred to be friendly and energetic like a Lab, and smart and hypoallergenic like a Poodle. Other popular hypoallergenic designer dogs include the Goldendoodle (Golden Retriever/Poodle), Cockapoo (Cocker Spaniel/Poodle) and Maltipoo (Maltese/Poodle). These designer hypoallergenic breeds meet the needs

A d v a n c e d M a t h & S c i e n c e I V

and desires of many individuals and families who want a type of dog, but because of allergies, cannot live in a home with it. New types of designer dogs are popping up every year.

It is important to note that not all designer dogs and mixed breeds are created responsibly and ethically, and there is always a risk of genetic health issues and temperament problems if breeding is not done carefully. And of course, there is never a guarantee that the desired outcome of this breeding will occur.

Far Rockaway Primary Care Facility to Close

As Rockaway fights for more healthcare access, another primary care facility is leaving the peninsula. On March 15, patients of the Far Rockaway AdvantageCare Physicians (ACPNY) primary care facility, or the Rockaway HIP Medical Center, were notified that the facility would be closing permanently on April 5.

A message on the facility’s website says, “April 5, our Rockaway Medical Office will close. Patients may continue their care at the nearby Cambria Heights, Valley Stream, Forest Hills, or Jamaica Estates offices, or any of ACPNY’s 30+ locations across the New York metro area.”

The staff of the Far Rockaway facility, located at 29-15 Far Rockaway Boulevard, will be relocating to the Cambria Heights location, and patients were notified that their upcoming ap -

pointments after April 5, will be transferred to that location specifically.

“Dr. Dacia Devian Hazarian and her Care Team will relocate to ACPNY’s Cambria Heights Medical Office for ongoing patient care. To assist in your continuity of care, all appointments scheduled at the Rockaway office after April 5 have been automatically transferred to the Cambria Heights office at the same date and time. We will contact you to confirm the date and time of your appointment. No action is needed.”

On Tuesday, March 28, Assemblyman Khaleel Anderson released a statement about the impending closure.

“The impending closure of the Far Rockaway AdvantageCare Physicians (ACPNY) primary care facility is deeply disappointing and underscores a careless disregard by the healthcare provider for the local community.

On March 15, ACPNY ‘notified’

more than 2,000 patients that they would soon lose their primary healthcare effective April 5 due to the provider shutting its facility, also known as the Rockaway HIP Medical Center.

“With little to no warning and zero community engagement, ACPNY decided that 2,100 patients, many of whom are senior citizens and people with disabilities, must now travel across Southeast Queens to Jamaica to see their trusted physician.

“As I fight alongside my government colleagues to improve and expand public transit and healthcare access across the district, this scenario caused by ACPNY’s

‘business decision’ further jeopardizes the health and well-being of a disadvantaged and vulnerable community.

“My office is actively working with local healthcare providers to ensure the continuity of care and the expansion of healthcare services in the region to address the void left by ACPNY,” Anderson said. “Shame on ACPNY for leaving the Far Rockaway community high and dry.”

This closure comes as the effort to bring more healthcare to the Rockaway peninsula continues. Late last year, Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers teamed up with NYC Health + Hospitals to form the Far Rockaway Trauma and Healthcare Access Taskforce to evaluate healthcare access across the region, including the feasibility of a trauma hospital in Far Rockaway, and the creation of a plan around strategic health infrastructure in the community.

Those of us who are bothered - what kind of recourse do we have?

Dear Editor:

Aaaah, yes summer fun time is almost here. I was reminded of this as I perused the Parks Department "Rules" signs just posted every few blocks.  The most glaring item to me is "No Amplified Sounds, Without Permit."  Do people not read English, or do they just not care to know?  I am sure all of us have had the experience of staking out our turf on the sand and 10 minutes later, a crew arrives next to you with their

Not to mention motorized scooters - also "forbidden."  Downright dangerous.

Lastly, but also on the roster of no-no's— "No Dogs on Boardwalk and Sand May 31Sep. 30".  HA!  Last season, there were more dogs than ever, both during day hours and evening.  People know about these rules but somehow think "Oh, that's not ME !!"

Where to grieve from here? Totally fed up, and hoping for better.

A BLISSFUL LIFE byJenniferKelleher be balanced Brahmacharya

Yoga is a 360° practice that extends far beyond the physical asanas (postures) that we often move through during a yoga class. In fact, many of the ancient texts written on yoga focus very little on the asanas and more on how to live a spiritual path toward enlightenment. In today’s article, I offer a sneak peek into Ocean Bliss Yoga’s focus of April: Brahmacharya.

Brahmacharya is the 4th Yama (moral discipline) of Patanjali’s text on the Yoga Sutras, and it refers to the ‘right use of energy,’ or the ‘behavior that leads to the divine.’ Take a moment to reflect on how you use and manage your energy. Do

you feel exhausted in your day-today life? Can you pinpoint specific things in your schedule that deplete you? Are there certain people or interactions that are especially tiring? Do you spend a lot of time worrying or stressing? To practice Brahmacharya, survey your life and notice the areas that are running you down. Then, land in your heart and ask what you can do to create balance? Sometimes, little things like three deep breaths or a walk around the block can be enough to refresh your energy.

When actions are soul-driven, efforts and energies are naturally reciprocated and replenished. Energy flows fluidly and freely, without blocks to hinder the exchange. This allows our cup to stay full and increases the amount that we are

capable of giving without feeling sucked dry.

Something that is mentally or emotionally charged on the other hand, lacks meaning, leaves you feeling drained, and is unsustainable. For example, “I should do that HIIT class because I want my body to look a certain way.” If you are not motivated to attend the HIIT class from the level of the soul, it is likely that it will leave you feeling exhausted and ravenously hungry, for example, as opposed to energized and balanced like you may have been hoping for.

So, what are some more ways to practice Brahmacharya in everyday life?

First, redirect your attention away from fleeting external desires and pleasures and onto finding peace and happiness within yourself. Focusing inward reminds us of our natural abundance and removes any personal agendas that may have been present. This shift in attention clarifies our priorities and simplifies our lives, guiding us to do what is essential in any given moment.

Next, listen to your body. In many ways, we are individual creatures with individual needs. What is good for me may not be good for you and visa-versa. Similarly, what worked for you a year ago may not work for you today. In order to be the best version of ourselves we have to constantly listen to, trust, and honor what our bodies need.

Finally, intentionally direct your energy toward positive things each day. If your pattern is to naturally jump into fear, worry, or other dense areas, make it your goal to occupy yourself with more of the things that help you to feel light, happy, and stable. Doing this will naturally start to balance the energy through all areas of your life.

We invite you to revive and balance yourself at Ocean Bliss Yoga. Discover new April classes and workshops for adults and children on our website at oceanblissyoga. net. Join Catherine McQuaid and myself in the studio on Wednesday, April 5 at 6:30 p.m. for a dive into April’s astrology and to learn what the upcoming eclipses mean for you in your life!

Ariola Stands With Surfside Among Alma Issues

Amidst the ongoing dispute between tenants and Alma Reality over conditions at Rockaway’s Surfside apartments, Councilwoman Joann Ariola spoke out to make her position clear and express her support for the tenants and the Surfside Housing Association For Tenants (SHAFT).

“What Alma is doing here at Surfside is nothing short of despicable,” Councilwoman Ariola said. “Tenants are left for days without heat or hot water, residents regularly complain to my office about cleanliness issues in the halls and lobbies, and the elevators have become nothing short of dangerous. Alma’s recent attempts to hold up a survey responded to by 150 people with less than a hundred people responding positively, showing that they are good caretakers is almost comical. This clearly does not represent the view held by the majority of Surfside residents and is simply a smoke and mirror act meant to misguide the general

public about what Alma is really doing.”

“For at least the last 15 years, SHAFT has been working very hard to keep Alma accountable for the upkeep of the property and to provide the services we deserve as rent paying tenants. It has been and continues to be a frustrating relationship,” SHAFT President Barbara Buffolino said. “As always Alma only steps up when electeds keep them in check. The burden continues to be placed on SHAFT and the individual tenants to ‘get things done.’  While the current staff try their best with no union to protect them, we stand by our opinion that there is not enough staff to provide the proper upkeep and issues involving equipment like boilers and elevators are still being repaired with a band-aiding approach.”

“Alma's refusal to address chronic health and safety issues within the buildings while simultaneously working to expand the

property is highly problematic,” one Surfside resident wrote in a recent letter. “Our building, 107-10 Shorefront Parkway, has had critical interruptions in the provision of heat and hot water, during which times outdoor temperatures have been below freezing. Our elevators have serious and dangerous problems for everyone, especially for people

with carriages, people with disabilities, senior citizens and those who live on very upper floors.”

Councilwoman Ariola firmly stands with the people of Surfside, and pledges to continue dialogue with Alma to rectify tenant complaints and ensure that all residents of those buildings can enjoy the quality of life that they expect and deserve.

Mara really stepped up her game this week. It was her best performance of the year. She looked smooth out there dropping her jump shots and slicing to the basket with some very slick moves. She ended up leading her first place team to anoth-

er victory with 17 of their 37 points.

Brandon was involved in a really great low scoring defensive battle. It took a total team effort to win this game, but Brandon clearly led the way. He is one of those players who makes scoring look effortless.

He scored 12 of his team's 27 points which was the key to his team being able to hold on to a tough twopoint win.

Sean totally dominated his game. He completely ruled under the boards, and the defense just could

not contain him on the offensive side. He was scoring from inside and outside, showing off some incredible moves to the rim along the way. He ended up leading his team to a thrilling two-point victory dropping 24 of his team's 48 points..

7th Grade Champs!

The 7th grade boys St. Francis de Sales CYO basketball team won the Diocesan Championship on Sunday, March 26, against St. Pat’s, by the score of 51-25. Congratulations to the team and coaches!

Guillain-Barre Syndrome

Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is a rare neurological disease that affects the peripheral nerves and causes muscle weakness. It is an autoimmune disease that affects the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord (the peripheral nerves) and develops over several days to weeks. GBS can cause severe muscle weakness, and death occurs in about 5% of cases. The most common subtypes are acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP) and acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN). Approximately 90% of people with GBS in North America and Europe have AIDP. Patients with

the AIDP subtype of GBS typically have weakness that starts in the legs and spreads to the arms, as well as decreased or absent reflexes. In more than 50% of these patients, nerves that originate in the brain stem (cranial nerves) are affected, which may cause facial weakness, difficulty swallowing, and eye muscle weakness or paralysis. About 25% to 30% of patients develop severe weakness or paralysis of the muscles used to breathe. GBS typically causes symptoms of low back pain and limb numbness and tingling, and fluctuations in blood pressure or an irregular heart rhythm can also occur.

GBS affects people worldwide, and the lifetime risk of GBS is estimated at one in 1000. Although it may occur at any age, the incidence increases with age, and males are slightly more likely to develop it than females. Approximately two thirds of patients have a diarrheal or respiratory illness four to six weeks prior to the onset of GBS symptoms. Other, less common events or conditions that may trigger GBS include recent surgery, pregnancy, or immunosuppression. Although rare, sporadic cases have been reported after vaccinations, but the risk of developing postvaccination GBS is much lower than the risk of developing GBS after an infection. The diagnosis of GBS is made based on symptoms and physical examination findings. Neurological testing may include electromyography and nerve conduction tests to assess nerve and muscle function. The results of a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) may support the diagnosis of GBS and can rule out other neurological diseases.

Those with suspected GBS should be admitted to the hospital as close monitoring of their breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure is required. Indi-

viduals who develop severe respiratory muscle weakness or paralysis are supported with mechanical ventilation. Those with swallowing issues can receive nutrition through a feeding tube. Current treatment recommendations include intravenous immune globulin, an infusion of antibodies, or plasma exchange (plasmapheresis) which involves removal and replacement of the liquid component of blood. About 40% to 50% of patients with GBS do not improve within four weeks and require prolonged supportive care. Physical, speech, and occupational therapy are important to help patients regain strength and function.

Most patients with GBS gradually improve and have complete recovery over six to 12 months. Some, unfortunately, have prolonged residual symptoms, including pain, fatigue, numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness. Some factors associated with a higher risk of death due to GBS include older age, more severe disease, and prolonged need for mechanical ventilation.

Answering Your Questions!

This week, we will take the opportunity to answer your questions.

The first question comes from Tony S. in Rockaway Park, and he asked, "Who do you think will win the match between Ring Of Honor (ROH) World Champion Claudio Castagnoli and Eddie Kingston?" Well, that match is scheduled for the ROH PPV "Supercard of Honor" on March 31, 2023, and I believe Claudio Castagnoli will win and retain

the ROH World Title. Claudio is definitely positioned well within the company, and I see him being champion until the end of the year.

The second question comes from Monica G. in Arverne, and she asked, "Will Alexa Bliss still appear at this year's WrestleMania? I heard she was dealing with an illness." Monica, as far as I am aware, Alexa has stated she was being treated for skin cancer. Alexa hasn't been seen on television since losing the Raw Wom-

en's Championship to Bianca Belair at this year's Royal Rumble Event. She is scheduled to appear at the WrestleMania weekend events.

The third question comes from Sammy J. in Far Rockaway, and he noted, "I feel CM Punk should eventually be nominated for the WWE Hall of Fame - if not this year’s, most definitely for the next Hall of Fame in 2024. Any thoughts?” OK, Sammy, let's say CM Punk leaves AEW sometime this year, and he makes amends with the WWE. There are still a number of other former WWE Superstars who are well ahead of CM Punk. I do agree that he is definitely a future Hall of Famer, but as for next year or the year after that, well, I don't see it happening.

The fourth and last question comes from Chase K. in Breezy Point, and he said, "I heard that the WWE will be coming out with a new Championship Belt. Do you know when and what it will look like?" Chase, the reports of

a new Championship Belt are true and have been confirmed by Louis Dangoor from WrestleVotes. But, at this time, we do not have any information on what it will look like, when it will be introduced, or even if it's a new World Title. I feel we might see some news about the belt after this year's WrestleMania.

Great questions everybody! Send Questions or Comments to eavil183@yahoo.com, have a great weekend!
