Beach Church Helps Rockaway Rise By Kami-Leigh Agard
Would you wake up early every morning to make sure that children, who are not kin to you, get to school? These early birds do so every day as volunteers to help a Far Rockaway community of children they fervently love, making sure they stay off the streets, and get their education. Pastor Ron Taylor and Elvis Leon of Beach Church, in Rockaway Beach and Meaghan Holley of nonprofit organization, Rockaway Rising in Edgemere, as well as other volunteers do this every day religiously. When Taylor invited me to get on his bus and see for myself, I did not know what to expect. However, I was immediately enamored by these children with their colorful personalities, amidst the challenges they face on a daily basis. As we were driving to the housing project, where they pick up the children, Taylor began to share the genesis of how this all started. “Rockaway Rising approached us to help transport these kids to school,” Taylor said. “Meaghan of Rockaway Rising, said that these kids are chronically absent. We simply want to help their parents get them dressed for school, transport them in a bus, and make sure they get their education. “They found that a lot of kids were out and about during the day, and not going to school. Regular school buses do come, but they honk their horn, and when no one comes out, they just take off. Some kids would walk to school, but when you are a kid, and not motivated, you just do your own thing. “For the parents, understandably life is out of control, and getting your kid to school sometimes could be the lowest thing on your Totem pole. However, Meaghan recognized that these parents and their kids needed help,” Taylor said. “And now, the parents totally welcome us. They know we care, and have no personal stake. It’s just a free ride to school for their kids,” Taylor said.
And so, the evolution started from one bus that was donated to Taylor, that he and Elvis Leon personally drove and later donated to Rockaway Rising. Then they got another bus, plus the 101 Precinct police officers also volunteered to transport these children to school. “In the beginning it was a little stressful because we had to personally enter these families’ homes and get their children dressed, and then bus them to school. However, now Meghan spearheads that on her own. Not an easy feat. It’s such a wonderful partnership with Meaghan and her team at Rockaway Rising, and the 101 Precinct. “It is so rewarding because we all developed trusting relationships with the parents. They began to embrace us, like family. Like President Theodore Roosevelt said, ‘People don’t care

about how much you know, until they know how much you care,’” Taylor said. “These parents connected with us because they know we don’t get paid to do this, none of us do. Personally, I just love the Lord, and sincerely want to help the community.” When Taylor and I arrived at the building, seeing the stream of children come out, jostling with each other, gave me an adrenaline rush. I became the unofficial bus monitor. One third-grader dropped his hat in the bus, and I ran into the school, searching for him. He needed his hat! A security guard approached me, and laughed, “You must be from the happy bus.” I proudly responded, “Sir, yes, I am!” Taylor, a native of Missouri, first came to Rockaway after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy.
“After Hurricane Sandy, NYC was all over the news nationally, and people reached out to our ministry for help. We started just with relief efforts: a soup kitchen, giving out batteries, flashlights and diapers, whatever folks needed. Then a local from Beach 97th Street gave us his garage as a meeting and storage space to help with relief efforts. People started besieging us with a host of questions: Why are you helping us? What are you doing? Where is your place at? So then because we were near the beach, we started calling ourselves ‘Beach Church,’ and the name just stuck. “As for recovery efforts, we went from relief center to recovery center. We linked arms with some Amish people in Pennsylvania, who helped with rebuilding homes. Together, we rebuilt 175 homes on the Peninsula,” Taylor said. “I just love the Lord, and I’m grateful that he blessed us with Beach Church. Our love for the community, made Rockaway home. God blessed us with our current vicinity on Beach 97th Street. Now we are in a space, where we strive to be a valuable resource for the community. We run a food pantry every Saturday, and hosted computer, ESL, citizenship, and even Zumba classes. “God just opened a door for my family to get into the community and help. In life there are callings and there are assignments. I believe that getting involved in people’s lives, knowing their stories, brings us together. “I am from Missouri. In the Midwest, people are more apt to open themselves and be a little more vulnerable. I think people in the East are so jaded. After being taken advantage of, they have a real hard time opening up. I never through I would be planting a church in Rockaway, but Sandy changed it all,” Taylor said. Beach Church is located at 244 Beach 97th Street. laughter and emotions filled with terror and joy. It’s life affirming and it’s best shared with people you know. And like an amusement park ride, Memory Lane comes to an end. It was good while it lasted but now it’s time to get back to the real world. You hope to get back on the ride some time, walk down Memory Lane again. But who knows when that’ll be. I sometimes hear people say they hated high school or don’t have friends from those days. And I can’t fathom that. Because here’s the thing. The championship was just icing on the cake. What we were celebrating last week was not so much the win, but the friendships that have endured. Winning the big game gave us basketball bragging rights forever. But the only things worth bragging about are the never-ending friendships. I don’t live on Memory Lane, but it’s a wonderful place to visit – especially when you can share it with people you love. I hope you’re as blessed as I’ve been. Until next time guys. Here we go, Kingsmen. Here we go!

are like family forty years later. Part of the explanation is we did it without a superstar; we did it with teamwork. Part of the explanation is how our success was enjoyed by so many, not just the team and staff. Eleven busloads of fans showed up to cheer us on that Sunday in March. Others came by car and subway to Fordham University, where the David and Goliath match was played. We won a close game before thousands who crammed the Rose Hill gym. If that were the end of the story, it’d be a good one. But the story continues today. We’re a team still, and though guys are spread across the country, there are ties between us that transcend miles and time. How lucky we are.

Here we go, Kingsmen! Here we go! That was a crowd’s chant from long ago that now echoes on Memory Lane. The trouble with Memory Lane is sometimes you’re the only one on it. It’s a lonely road, where there’s no one with you to recall the sights and sounds; no one to laugh and cry with; no one else to validate that memory or fill in the blanks. Memory Lane can be like an amusement park ride with highs and lows, and twists and turns. There’s crazy
an amazing, improbable championship season forty years ago. Nazareth High School was far from a basketball powerhouse when a bunch of undersized overachievers toppled the mighty and undefeated Power Memorial in the City Finals. It was every bit Hoosiers, Rudy, Rocky and Miracle On Ice -- movie stuff, for sure. Winning the championship, doesn’t explain what happened in 1977 and ever since. Of course, winning a championship is special. All championship teams, no matter the sport, no matter the level, enjoy the memories and share good feelings. But few teams become part of your fabric. Who you are; who you’ve become. Teams might be like family during the season but few teams

Should Sex Offenders Be Blocked From Social Media? By Kami-Leigh Agard
As the Supreme Court takes on the question of whether convicted sexual offenders should be allowed to access social media sites where minors post, and if barring them from sites like Facebook violates their First Amendment right to free speech, pay attention Rockaway locals, because the high court’s ruling will affect all individuals who call the peninsula home. According to the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Sex Offender Registry, more than 140 convicted sexual predators reside on the Rockaway peninsula, with the highest concentration of more than 120 living in Far Rockaway, (zip code 11691). (See chart illustrating sex offender breakdown by zip code. Note that these numbers only include convicted sexual offenders who the courts designated as Level 2 and Level 3 risk levels). One convicted Level 2 sexual offender lives on Beach 66th Street, where elementary and middle schools, P.S./M.S. 42 are located. According to a New York City Police Department (NYPD) representative, sexual offenders are monitored by the NYPD’s citywide Sex Offender Unit. He shared that under the current law, “sex offenders must register with the division no later than ten calendar days after any change in internet accounts with internet access providers belonging to the offender, internet identifiers that such offender uses.” However, some Rockaway residents doubt that the local Precincts are keeping close guard, especially when it comes to social media activities. “I don’t believe our local Precinct is doing enough to monitor these sick morons,” Arverne resident, Monique Hernandez, said. “These fel-
ons live on our streets. Most of them don’t work. They walk up and down the street, sit on the boardwalk just watching. I’m sure they get urges, and I’m sure those urges don’t go away. Like they say once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic. I have a teenaged daughter. I do not allow her to walk just one street away to her grandfather’s house. I see men looking at her sometimes, and it frightens me. I don’t know who they are, much less what they are thinking or planning. “They should not be allowed to live on the same street where there is a school, and they definitely should not be on social media! When you register for a Facebook account, there is no category for them to register as a sexual offender. They can use a fake photo, name and totally deceive you. I’m sure most of these felons get away with it for a while, and then when the authorities finally find out, it may be too late,” Hernandez said. Rockaway Beach resident, Marcus Jackson, a father of three commented, “It can go both ways on social media, it’s a whole different realm. Personally, I don’t think sexual offenders should be allowed on social media. Who cares about their First Amendment right? They violated that right when they did the crime. “However, if the court rules in favor of them, the authorities would need to step up their game big time. There should be strict guidelines. For example, their page should be private, not public. They should not be allowed to have multiple pages, so it would be easier to track their activities. Their page should be constantly flagged and watched. Listen, these people have no boundaries. They have an addiction that never goes away. Social media would just give them a whole new playground

of temptation, making it easier for them to search for unknowing victims. I believe sexual crimes are just as bad as murder. The authorities need to come up with a practical solution to the practical dilemma of sex offenders being on social media and harvesting information about our children, and then soliciting them online.” However, some locals believe that allowing sexual predators on social media would actually be beneficial. One local who did not want to disclose his name said, “Think about it this way. If the authorities can track my online metric to exactly where I am, what I bought, what I looked at and for how long…why wouldn’t they be able to use that
power to keep tabs on these people? If they stay online and do not in any way, shape or form contact minors, then you know exactly where they are! The powers that be literally will see their commu-
nications and monitor it. The scariest people to find or keep tabs on are the people with zero online presence. Hell, that’s an art in itself.” So as the high court decides this case, Rock-

Facts You Probably Don’t Need If you were to spend one night in every hotel room in Las Vegas, it would take you 288 years. Elvis Presley played 837 consecutive sold-out shows at the Las Vegas Hilton. In Vegas, over 60,000 pounds of shrimp are consumed every day. That's more than the rest of the country combined. The largest sum of money won from Vegas Slots took place at the Excalibur Hotel. A man put in $100 and won $39,000,000. Vegas Casinos do not use dice that have rounded corners.
There is one slot machine for every eight residents (approximately) in Las Vegas. The Sphinx outside of the Luxor Hotel is actually bigger than the real Sphinx of Giza. Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
Be a Maverick! A Noisemaker! It's time to mobilize for our special-needs children! “Six thousand dollars,” said the special education lawyer, I came to see regarding starting the process to make the NYC Department of Education (DOE) pay for my daughter to attend private school. “Six thousand dollars!” I exclaimed. “Yes, $6K is what it would cost just
for you to get the private evaluations needed to prove that the DOE District 75 schools are not providing what your daughter needs to excel academically and socially. A wave of exhaustion came over me as I sat dumbfounded across the lawyer. Local Rockaway resident, Regina Skyer, author of the books, “How to Survive Turning 5”

and “What Do You Do After High School" is a leading special education lawyer known for her passionate advocacy of special-needs children. She not only knows the current law, but shares her knowledge of existing schools, programs and services in order to effectively guide parents, in what can otherwise be an overwhelming process. In her initial consultation with parents she presents options, explains the legal process and helps plan an initial strategy. I developed a relationship with Skyer through this column. She reached out to me and graciously offered an initial free consultation, (which normally costs about $450), on the private school education process. She explained that because children with disabilities are entitled to a free and appropriate public education, under federal law, the DOE must pay for an appropriate private special education school, if it is proven that public schools are not serving your child equitably. Most private schools cost upwards of $35K per year. To complicate matters further, parents have to attend a hearing, armed with proof that public schools are failing their child. If even a parent wins the case, sometimes they have to pay the tuition upfront and wait to be reimbursed by the DOE. “Judging from the little progress your daughter has made in her four years at public school, she desperately needs more. I suggest you either move to a better school district such as in Long Island, or get the DOE to pay for private school,” Skyer said. I thanked Skyer, and left her office in a daze. Blimey! Where in our blasted bubble were we going to get $6K? I could pawn my wedding band, but then again I was hoping to give it to my daughter, when she turned 18. Also for her dad, this might add insult to injury, as I accidentally flushed the first ring set down the toilet within six months of being married. Seriously, it was an accident! I could sell my beloved vintage clothing collection, but then again not many people have a size 24 waist. Listen, I am not boasting, especially since 32-24-35 body
The Rockaway Times measurements do not exactly conjure up the image of the voluptuous Kim Kardashian. Think Ariana Grande. I drove home depressed and bewildered. Suppose we drummed up the money for the evaluations, and still got rejected for private school by the DOE? However, “Oh ye of little faith!” The Almighty does work in mysterious ways. This past weekend I met with a dynamic woman, Dr. Alisha Griffith, who will speak at the next Rockaway Beach “Artistic” Families support group. Griffith wears many hats. She is the mother of a 10-year old son on the autism spectrum, and a professionally-trained educator, speech language pathologist and audiologist. She recently authored the best-selling book, “Au-mazing Gift: A Journey To Autism Acceptance.” When I relayed my conundrum with Griffith, she exclaimed, “You got this! Be a maverick, a noisemaker. You are your child’s best advocate. March into the DOE’s office and demand what you need for your daughter. If they give you any opposition, shake them down,” advised Griffith. She rallied on. “You don’t have the money now, but in the interim take all the steps needed to make your voice heard and demands met. Demand that your daughter gets speech therapy five times a week, instead of three. You have to be tough and strong. I had to do the same for my son,” said Griffith. Folks, it’s time for us as a community to be noisemakers and mobilize to get exactly what we need for our children. No time to lay back and play the blame game. Meet Griffith at the next Rockaway Beach “Artistic” Families support group on Thursday, March 16, 7p.m. at Willderness Yard, located at 99-04A Rockaway Beach Blvd. It’s going to be an electric and educational meeting. I talk about autism to open doors into the reality of our lives as caregivers, build understanding, tolerance and growth of our “artistic” children. Please do share your thoughts and stories by emailing ourartisticchild@ outlook.com.

Myrtle Beach Meets Far Rockaway By Katie McFadden
Rockaway is so cool, that it’s heading south. Many local snowbirds and retirees don’t head as far south as Florida or Puerto Rico anymore. Rather they find themselves making South Carolina’s Myrtle Beach their getaway. Rockaway to Myrtle Beach transplants, or those simply taking a trip to the Carolinas are now getting a taste of home. A Rockaway-inspired restaurant is opening in Surfside Beach in South
Carolina. Far Rockaway Fresh Seafood and Pasta House will connect one east coach beach to another when it officially opens on Saturday, March 11. Alan Husain, one of the owners behind the new restaurant, found paradise within South Carolina and decided to move from his home in Bayswater, Far Rockaway, where he had lived since 2006, to Myrtle Beach in 2013. “I wake up in paradise every day. It’s amazing,” Husain said of his new hometown. However, he still has his Far Rockaway house, which he sometimes returns to, and he wanted to bring of piece his old neighborhood down south. “I’m still connected to Far Rockaway. It’s my love and my heart and my home, even though I’m not living there right now,” he said. Far Rockaway Fresh Seafood and Pasta House, located at 531 Highway 17 Business S, in the Surfside Beach area of Myrtle Beach, brings a bit of old Far Rock flair to South Carolina. Those who know Rockaway will recog-
nize a literal sign from home just by passing the place. The business sign is inspired by the Far Rockaway subway sign and even dons the blue ‘A.’ Inside, the restaurant will bring visitors back in time. The original theme was going to be inspired by the beach, but not wanting to hone in on a cliché, Husain went for a different vibe, inspired by the prohibition era. “The theme is Far
Rockaway from the 1910s to the 1950s. We went very retro, so it’s almost like stepping into a speakeasy. We have Edison bulbs over the tables and the bar is made of distressed wood,” he said. The walls make for a trip down memory lane. The walls are donned with black and white prints of old photos of Rockaway. The restaurant will offer a fam-

It will be open early for breakfast starting at 6:30 a.m., lunch and dinner and will offer meals at affordable prices, like a $6.99 breakfast special and entrees averaging at $15. The menu will be seafood dominated, but other items like pasta dishes will be available. The chef hails from New Orleans, so the food will bring guests down to the bayou. Husain expects the shrimp and grits dish to be a big seller, but they’ll also have items for the more adventurous, such as alligator tacos. Sticking to the speakeasy vibe, the bar will feature an extensive bourbon menu, along with craft beers, plus more. This isn’t Husain’s first time bringing a piece of New York down south. Husain, a longtime Queens resident, long worked as a truck driver, but has also been involved in the restaurant business. His family opened the original Gino’s Real NY Pizza in Astoria, Queens back in 1969. They have since opened four Gino’s Pizzerias in Myrtle Beach. Husain himself helped open the fourth location in the Garden City area. They also owned an Italian restaurant called Valentino’s, which
THURSDAY, MARCH 9, 2017 was the former name of the now Far Rockaway restaurant. “We owned the building for two years and decided to redo it with a different concept. We were brainstorming names and I came up with Far Rockaway and it stuck,” Husain said, knowing that it was a name that the locals would recognize. “Living down here in Myrtle Beach, you realize how many people are from the New York and New Jersey area. The Surfside Beach and Murrell’s Inlet area is like a mini-New York. About 70 percent of people are from New York and New Jersey and people from up there know what Far Rockaway is. It’s their beach up north to our beach down here,” Husain said. “People recognize the subway sign. People will see it and think of New York, and many will know the A train is the longest subway line in New York, and you can’t think of Far Rockaway without thinking of the A train. A lot of our clientele are going to know that sign.” Before the soft opening on Tuesday, March 7, Husain reflected on the transformation, saying, “Holy cow, I just created Far Rockaway in South Carolina. I’m looking at all the old pictures on the wall and just thinking how amazing it is to see that era. This is going to be a beautiful experience.”

Rockapup is Closing Dear Editor: It is with heavy hearts that we announce the closing of Rockapup at 145 Beach 116th St. After five years of serving our neighbors in the Rockaways, we find that as each month passes, it becomes harder and harder to keep our brick and mortar business. As it becomes simpler and less expensive to order from online stores, we simply cannot keep our doors open any longer. This is a sad time for us as we have grown to know many dogs and owners in this
community and consider you all part of the Rockapup family. Lisa Long, Rockapup’s owner, has personally trained dozens of dogs in the neighborhood, and has been an unlimited source of knowledge and resource for all of Rockaway’s pets. The staff at Rockapup has been committed to providing the best customer service possible and creating a vibe you will find at no other pet store. We will not have a liquidation sale; but we ask that you support us as we sell off all our merchandise and equipment. We will have a "Grand Closing" party on Friday, March 24 through Sunday, March 26 that everyone is invited to as we say our goodbyes, but please stop in anytime. We may be open a few weeks beyond this date as needed to wind down and clear our store. For our grooming clients, we hope to be able to accommodate as many of our clients as possible privately after we close. Please speak with our groomer personally

about this. It's been a privilege to be a part of the Rockaway Business Alliance (RBA) and its growth and evolution. This up-andcoming organization is poised to do amazing things for this community and we wish them well. They have agreed to keep up with our poop bag dispensers and continue to get more for the neighborhood. Lastly, we regret not having the opportunity to work with Mark Caller from the Marcal Group. Mark is the new developer that is building condos on 116th and will be purchasing the Rockapup building. Mark has an inspiring vision for making 116th a true destination and we are truly excited by what he has done thus far. He would have not only been our new landlord, but a mentor and friend as well. We truly regret not being able to continue working with Mark and his team. We wish Rockaway nothing but the best and hope to see you all again in a future ven-
ture! For inquiries, contact: info@rockapup.com Lisa Long
Beach 116th Bummer Dear Editor: Dr. Peter Galvin was not in any way exaggerating in his letter regarding 116 St. I was on the block and in the time it took to walk from Pickles and Pies to Last Stop, I was asked three times for change. Looking around at all the empty stores and homeless people is very depressing. I have just learned that today is the last day for Station Liquors. What can be done? Surely we must have some interested investors who would want to build a business and help re-create this once thriving block. The summer of course is the best time for a business there (or was), but we have even lost those stores. Cynthia Allen

Thanks, Doc Dear Editor: (In Response to 3/2 Ask the Doc) I deeply appreciate the doc's article on our nation's healthcare situation. In spite of the problems that have arisen with Obamacare, mainly through the rejection of healthy young people to accept responsibility as citizens, twenty million fellow citizens got health insurance for the first time. These same youngsters who would be subject to a draft if our new president chooses to get us into another war that he wants to win, why won't they recognize that each every citizen has a right to health insurance. They acknowledge the government's right to send them to war, but deny the right of all citizens to health insurance. Thanks again to the doc for his analysis. John Traugott

Thanks to Sandy Plumbers Dear Editor: I was riding my bike and saw a new van with the J. Caiazzo logo. It is March 2017 and my relatives are thankful to the J. Caiazzo plumbers for being available during Hurricane Sandy. It seems we had all the executives working and supervising staff for weeks on the water heater and boiler at different stages. It took time because for five weeks or more there was no electricity in the community. To have warm water was a blessing. Thank you Joe Jr., Michael and Anthony. The Stanski's
Under Warranty? In Rockaway Park, there is the Jamaica Bay sea wall. The Trevcon Construction company or Skanska, maybe subsidiaries of each other, had the contract to install steel pile-ons, dredge the bay, and cement the area in the bay by
the drain pipes, but sewers like on 120th street, etc., still flood. I talked to a Skanska rep. in the summer, and she blames the flooding on the D.E.P., not the angling/pitching downward sewer pipe, and are waiting to get a contract if enough residents file a complaint. Along the sea wall, a walkway from 108th street to 169th, the walkway is collapsing by 132nd to 137th streets and other locations. Is Skanska, a company that is still doing repairs in Rockaway Park, NY by the 20th-40th Street boardwalk, under obligation to repair workmanship on the walkway? And why not dredge down 10-20 feet? Maybe then the sewers will not back up on the roadway during high tide in a normal rain storm...thank you. Mr. Benjamin
Page 15 This is such BS. Instead of forcing people to get a pass, they make it easier for those who don’t, once again with our tax dollars. And why, oh why, does this have to be done during rush hour? Makes no sense all-around. Lauri Esposito Dear Editor: These tolls are an injustice to the people of our communities. It suffocates financial growth because big business does not want to come here. Our assembly reps have to continuously fight for the rebate program, which as many know, is not guaranteed. On Statins
Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Statins (Lipitor, Crestor, etc.) have been proven to lower total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL or “bad” cholesterol), which has been shown to prevent or delay the onset of heart disease. They also help to stabilize heart disease in someone who already has it. The problem for both clinicians and patients is determining when to start statin therapy because there are a number of guidelines available and they all differ in their recommendations. The first step in deciding when to start statin treatment is to determine what the person’s risk of developing heart disease is. In addition the risk of someone who already
The Rockaway Times
has heart disease, having worsening disease needs to be assessed. Patients can be stratified into risk categories that range from very high to low, based on a number of factors. Among these factors are age, gender, total cholesterol, systolic blood pressure, smoking history, family history, abdominal obesity, diabetes, physical activity, and kidney disease. For example, a 40-year-old with a history of hypertension and smoking has the same risk of developing heart disease as a healthy, non-smoking 65-year-old. Elevated lipid treatment guidelines are provided by a number of organizations and agencies including the VA/DoD (Dept. of Defense),

American College of Cardiology (ACC)/American Heart Association (AHA), and the European Atherosclerosis Society/European Society of Cardiology. Let’s look at the ACC/AHA treatment recommendations. They recommend the following: Highdose statin for patients under 75 years of age with heart disease, high-dose treatment for adults aged 21 or older with LDL (“bad cholesterol”) over 190, moderate to high-dose treatment for persons aged 40-75 with diabetes and LDL greater than 70, and adults aged 40-75 with LDL over 70 without diabetes or heart disease but with a moderate to high-risk of developing heart disease, they also recommend a physician – patient discussion before starting treatment. The ACC/AHA also recommends a fasting lipid blood test four to 12 weeks after initiation of treatment, and repeat testing every three to
12 months thereafter. The frequent testing is important for several reasons. First, to assess whether the treatment is effective at getting the patient to their lipid goals. Also to assess whether the patient is actually taking the medication (many people do not take meds as prescribed). And to assess whether the medication is causing any side effects (like muscle or liver issues). So if you have not done so, get to your doctor to have your risk of developing heart disease assessed. If you are taking a statin, be sure to get regular blood testing to evaluate the efficacy of the treatment and its potential side effects. And if you smoke, please stop. Smoking is thought to be the number one risk factor for a host of negative health issues including heart disease. Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes.com

care packages. I had to remind her that I spent more than a year living in a small apartment directly above the Chrystal Palace Cafe over on Russell and Nassau Streets in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, directly across from McGolrick Park back in the late 80's. Not having a stereo set, on quiet nights I use to stomp on the living room floor and yell out "Play B32" and shortly thereafter, the jukebox in the bar downstairs would start playing Patsy Cline's "Crazy." I mean, who had it better than me back then? I asked if her apartment had laundry facilities and she quickly replied, "Oh no, I'll come home to do my laundry." I found this amusing as her concept of doing laundry at home was simply to drop all her clothes on the floor and await the laundry fairy who would fly
about her room gathering up, washing, drying, folding and returning all her items. This is not Amy's first fling with independent living as she has previously spent a cold winter away dorming at Canisius College up in Buffalo, and a year living and working out near the "The Mistake on the Lake," Cleveland, Ohio. Obviously she still has the itch to strike out on her own, but I think her previous adventures left her with a desire to set up her campsite somewhat closer to the safety net of our homebase here in the Channel. Although she has established herself as an independent young woman, our other bookend, Victoria, is not that interested in completely striking out on her own just yet. Vicky does share one trait with her sis-

But whereas her sister Amy has eschewed the idea of vehicle ownership, ("What for, the bus, train and Uber take me anywhere I want to go!"), Vicky loves to travel and the idea that she can pack up her car and go anywhere on a moment's notice, as long as the GPS system is working, is her idea of heaven on earth. Working two jobs, she owns her own car and has assumed the responsibilities that come with that - insurance, fuel, maintenance, etc. Vicky and her girlfriend left last week for a two-week trip to Ireland. Landing in Dublin, they visited the St. James Gate Guinness Brewery and Trinity College, and then, staying overnight at various hostels, they worked their way north up the M1 to Belfast where they are taking a ferry across to Scotland.
So far so good - no international incidents! Grace and I are proud of both our girls as they are young, bright, possessed with great work ethics and, most importantly, they are both imbued with a solid dose of common sense sorely lacking in my younger years. Our advice to both of them was simple: go forth and enjoy the adventure of life, keep your cell phone charged at all times and remember our front door and the laundry fairy will always welcome you home! Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Rustic Farmhouse Table (Part 1) By Artie Wallace
A reader wrote in asking about building a Rustic Farmhouse Table. I thought this was a great topic, however I am covering this in a two-part article due to limited article space. Where to start? As with any table, you will need to start with the legs and supports. If you have an old wood table with a sturdy frame, you can always just change the top. But if you’re building it from scratch, here are the basics. 1- Use pressure-treated wood or true timber. But bare in mind that true timber will require more sanding and/or
planning. 2- Cut four 4x4s the same length for the legs. 3- Cut two 1x3s for the length of the table and two 1x3s for the width. 4- Attach a 4x4 to each end of the pieces for the width, giving you the two sides. Be sure that your end piece is flush with the top and one of the sides of the 4x4s. 5- Attach each end of the pieces for the length to the sides leaving the 1x3s on the outside of the 4x4s. Make sure the tops and ends are flush. 6- Cut a 2x3 to fit between the inner sides of your length pieces and install them every 12 inches to support your tabletop.
FIA
7- At each end (your width sides) cut a 3x3 to fit between the 4x4s and install them on the inner sides of your 1x3s. What’s next? Now that you have your frame made, it’s time to build your tabletop. There are many designs for the tops. I am going to tell you how to make one of the most basic ones. 1- Measure the overall length of your frame and cut 2x6s, three inches longer than your length. For every 12 inches of width cut two 2x6s and then cut two more.
2- Lay them out in place across your frame starting from the center. You may find that you need to adjust them to fit a full 2x3. 3- Lifting one out, mark the position of one of the remaining ones giving you your starting point to secure them in place. 4- Leaving 1 ½ overhang on either end, start securing your boards in place keeping the ends flush with one another. St. Patrick's Day Celebration I LOVE THE LIFE I LIVE I was inspired today when I asked someone how she was feeling and she responded by saying, “I love the life I live!” This, coupled with a friend’s reminder to be in the flow and not resist, got me thinking. How many of us can shout from the top of a mountain: I LOVE THE LIFE I LIVE! The ability to go with the flow, not resist and adjust to change can create inner harmony and cause this wonderful sentiment to well up from deep within. There is pain and suffering in life, no doubt about that, but, like everything else, it is how we choose to deal with it that makes the difference for our inner landscapes. Imagine your inner thinking feeling being as a landscape. It can be barren and dark and colorless, or it can be fruitful, light and bright with all the colors of the rainbow. There are hummingbirds and butterflies and whatever else you can imagine. Not to resist the flow of life is the key to good health. As my friend says, “True health is the ability to adjust to change. Clinging causes pain and suffering.” Pondering this, I realize that it is really the approach that makes the difference. When something happens which causes pain and suffering, it is natural to react and be sad and grieve, etc., etc. But it is the belief that there is a process of getting through that pain and suffering that sets us free. There is an end to it, an adjustment to the change that could occur if we let it, a letting go.
Allowing the flow to prevail, and not the resistance, has to be healthier. The resistance in our minds and hearts has to have an effect on the physical body. Resistance causes tension and holding, and we become solid. Since we are in a constant state of movement within, the belief of “flow” allows the positive energy to be, and move around the physical body. Of course, it does have to come from our heart space. We can’t just think that we want to be positive or let things go, and not resist. It has to be heartfelt. How do we get there? Try this exercise: lie down and tense all of your muscles, including your face and hands and feet and everything. This is what resistance feels like in the heart. Now let it go and relax. This is what flow feels like. Which feels better to you? This is a physical manifestation of resisting and flowing. Now take it to your inner landscape and see if you can feel which state you are in now. Conscious effort may be required at first not to hold on to what is no longer real. Then allowing life to unfold in its constant state of flux will eventually feel natural. And, you will come to being healthy and happy. All roads lead to happiness and peace, it’s just the getting there. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

The Rockaway Times
Investing By Lou Pastina
Many people ask me what should they invest in. Although I worked at the NYSE many years, I never traded a share of stock, nor did I act in an investment advisory capacity, or as a broker. I am often amused by Jim Cramer of CNBC, lecturing on the morning show before the 9:30 opening about what stocks are hot. He pontificates for a half hour about which stocks to buy or sell, and then at the end of his segment, there is a disclaimer that CNBC runs, that states that the preceding half hour was deemed to be “entertainment” and not investment advice, and that Jim’s views are his own, not CNBC’s, and if you do invest please consult a professional. So for the protection of The Rockaway Times, please note that the following views are
my own, and are for entertainment purposes only, and if you can find a professional, please consult them! Over the years I did observe several practices that I thought were healthy when it came to investing. The first was to do something called dollar cost averaging. It’s a simple concept really, the idea being that you buy stocks over time, averaging your cost as you do so. This avoids the buy low, sell high syndrome that so many fall prey to. Many brokerage firms allow you to do this by transferring a certain amount of money each month and continually buying small chunks. Thus your cost of ownership is averaged across both good markets and bad. The second important observation I made is that the market is for the long haul, not shortterm gains. The idea of making a “killing” in the market is a fallacious one. The idea is to invest, not “trade.” There are too many sharp, computer-aided traders in the market. You will never beat
them. But you can outlast them. The most important lesson for me was knowing when “not” to sell. I lived through the 1987 crash, the 2008-2009 meltdown and the 2010 flash crash, and what I learned was that no matter how far the market went down, not to sell when it did. There is something called reversion to the mean, which basically says that anomalous dips will eventually revert back to the average. And in each of the cases above that was true. Of course you have to have the time and capital to wait it out. If you need that money for the weekend concession stands this summer, the market is probably not the place for you right now. The third important thing I learned is that it is hard to pick individual winners, and harder yet to track them. It’s a lot easier to track the market as a whole, and there are mutual funds that do exactly that. So if the Dow Jones or S&P is up for the day – it’s reported on the news everyday. If you invested in the “All American Dodo” company because your
second cousin twice removed had a hot tip, it might be hard to know how that stock is doing. That’s not to say if you invest in companies you know, products you use, that you wouldn’t do well. Believe me, a portfolio of Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Nike, Snap, Google, Amazon, and Apple to name a few would be pretty good too. But take a look at those names and realize that they all are or will be in the S&P, so why not buy the fund? This way you can tell people that not only are you in the market…you own it! By now you are probably saying, come-on Laser, you were right there on the trading floor everyday, give us a really good tip. Ok, ok, here it is, the inside scoop, the thing to invest in is your Mermaid! First you have to do the research to find the right Mermaid, they are all different you know. Then you need to start investing in that Mermaid because the dividends are ever increasing and last a lifetime. That is the best investment anyone can make!

Safely Home I am home in Heaven, dear ones; Oh, so happy and so bright! There is perfect joy and beauty In this everlasting light. All the pain and grief is over, Every restless tossing passed; I am now at peace forever, Safely home in Heaven at last. Did you wonder I so calmly Trod the valley of the shade? Oh! but Jesus' love illumined Every dark ad fearful glade. And He came Himself to meet me In that way so hard to tread; And with Jesus' arm to lean on, Could I have one doubt or dread?
In Loving Memory of Joey Hanna "Mr. Brown" 7/11/41-3/11/97
Then you must not grieve so sorely, For I love you dearly still: Try to look beyond earth's shadows, Pray to trust our Father's Will. There is work still waiting for you, So you must not idly stand; Do it now, while life remaineth You shall rest in Jesus' land. When that work is all completed, He will gently call you Home; Oh, the rapture of that meeting, Oh, the joy to see you come! Gone but never forgotten; Always in our hearts. It's been 20 years but still feels like yesterday. We love you and miss you, Your wife, Nancy and children Joseph, Elizabeth and Brian ¡

This week’s view has us looking towards the bay on Seaside Avenue (Beach 103rd Street). Shorefront Parkway is behind the camera, and on the left or west side of the block are Nick’s Restaurant, Healy’s Bar and Restaurant, and the Sligo Hotel. On the right or east side of the block are O’Connell’s Hotel, McCabe and McCabe’s Lei

And the Parade Goes On The cold and wind may have kept the mayor and a few other groups away at the 42nd Annual Queens County St. Patrick's Day Parade, but it was still a big hit. Youth Rugby Celebrates St. Paddy’s & Spring Season By Jim Galligan
Since 1974, the Rockaway Peninsula has played an outsized role in the rapid growth and steady ascent of American Rugby. Young men and women who passed through Fort Tilden's sand-strewn fields, where the city meets the sea, have gone on to national prominence as Players, Coaches, Administrators and Founding Members of rugby teams across the country. On Saturday, March 4, that tradition and success was honored as dozens of youth rugby players marched in support of their coaches, Andrew Israel (posthumously) and Rob Palmer, who were named as Deputy Grand Marshals. The team was pleased to see the Mayors of Cork, Limerick and Tipperary showing their support by wearing Rockaway Rugby scarves, and honored
to receive the Queens County Saint Patrick's Day Parade award for Best Tradition. The Rockaway Fish Heads Rugby Club extends their thanks to their friends, family and supporters who braved the cold to make this a special day. Rockaway's Youth Rugby Programs are taught by former players with decades of experience leading to a consistently top Middle School program and a High School program on the cusp of achieving prominence in its own right. This spring, the Youth Rugby program, which benefits from the deep knowledge of rugby on the peninsula, coupled with strong community support, will compete against the best teams in the NY Metro area. These matches include a perennial favorite against top 5 nationally ranked Xavier High School Rugby, which is popu-
lated by many alumni of Rockaway Rugby's Middle School Program. As they kick off their Spring Season, Rockaway Youth Rugby welcomes new play-
ers ages 10 through 18 to join the team and continue the winning tradition. For more information please visit their website at RockawayYouthRugby.org.

ship. The Championship win against the Long Island Rebels capped a 20 win, one loss season for the group. They now head to Buffalo, NY to represent the League at the NY State Championships.

St. Camillus / St. Virgilius Mini Basketball Program Ends Another Great Year By Bill Swenson
Another successful St. Camillus / St. Virgilius Mini basketball season has come to an end. The league runs from mid-November through early February. The Mini basketball program is divided into two divisions: kindergarten through 1st grade, and children in the 2nd grade. This year we had more than 140 players participating in this league. The K-1 program is a wonderful program that is tremendous fun for everyone involved. Children at this age can really teach us all a lesson about how the game should be played. They play hard, but they never lose the joy that should come along with playing the game. If you come and watch these children play you will find yourself continually sitting there and smiling. The crowd is loud and excited and happily cheers for everyone. Whenever a player scores, it seems like the first thing they all do is look over to the sidelines to find their family members to share the excitement of the moment. It’s wonderful to watch. Nobody cares about the score. They just want the
kids to learn, and most importantly, to have fun. Setting up a unique division for only the second graders was the brainchild of Jill Palisi who runs the Minis. It turned out to be a great idea. The second graders played using the regulation baskets (K-1 use the 8-foot baskets) and in their games the score was kept. The children in this program got to play against children of their own age and ability and they really benefited. They were able to really learn the game and be more prepared when they move up next year into our older league. This year, as always, we also ended the year with our Mini Olympics, which were held on February 11. This is probably the best day of the entire year. For the K-1 division, several games are set up at different stations throughout the gym. The games at each station incorporate shooting, dribbling, and passing skills. Each team goes to each station and gives it their best. The gym is packed with players, coaches, parents and other fans cheering on all the children and constantly encouraging them. At the end of the day every-

one is a winner, and all the children receive trophies to commemorate their achievements for the year. Awards are also given out for the three teams that finish in the top three spots, and for the individual high scorers. For the 2nd grade division, we actually held playoffs, and they couldn’t have turned out better. The championship game was really fun to watch. Everybody in the packed gym was having a ball watching these kids play. In the end, the winning team sneaked out a very closely contested victory. Very special thanks need to go to Jill Palisi. Without her there could not have been a league. She takes her responsibility for this program very seriously. She was in the gym every Saturday morning for
about five hours. She is totally enthusiastic about the program and is constantly instituting changes to make the program better. Thank you to all the coaches and parents who volunteered their time to run the kitchen, and to help teach the children of our community about basketball, and some of the important life lessons that are learned by playing a team game. Finally, the last thank you always goes to Father Ahlemeyer. He is the foundation of the program and without his consistent enthusiastic support we would not have the ability to provide this wonderful experience to all of these children. If you weren’t part of the fun this year, please come down and join us next year.
