Mazzone Hardware to Open Next Week By Katie McFadden
Need some house paint, garden tools to spruce up the yard, or a spare key made? Rockaway is finally getting its hardware store back. After longtime establishment, Brown’s Hardware was sold and closed last August, Mazzone Ace Hardware is set to open in its place next week. At the end of last summer, Brown’s Hardware owner Elizabeth Hanna announced that the store had been sold, but it was going to be in good hands. Mazzone Hardware, a longtime family business based in Brooklyn, is ready to open their new Rockaway location (245 Beach 116th Street) on Monday or Tuesday of next week, according to new owner, Matt Mazzone. “We’re really looking forward to opening and being a part of this community,” Mazzone said.
Mazzone Hardware’s longrunning history shows they must be doing something right. The business started back in 1950 when Salvatore Mazzone opened his first store on Court Street in the Carroll Gardens section of Brooklyn. By the 1960s, he purchased an even larger location at 470 Court Street, where the original Mazzone Hardware still operates. Just five years ago, they opened their second location in Cobble Hill. Now they’re expanding to Rockaway, taking over the old Browns Hardware on Beach 116th. Even though Mazzone is new to Rockaway, the family had a longtime connection to the former owners of Browns. Mazzone said he knew the later Noni Signoretti, who co-owned the store with her cousin, Hanna, quite well. Signoretti passed away in October 2015. “When she passed, it really hit
home for me,” Mazzone said. The loss of her business partner also deeply affected Hanna. “Liz contacted us about looking to sell and she wanted to make sure the store went to a community-oriented business that would do a good job. Being able to take over the store was really an honor for us because of the relationship I had with Noni and Liz over the years. We wanted to make them proud and have a nice store to represent them well.” Over the past few months, Mazzone has done a complete overhaul of Browns, giving the store a completely new, modern look, making it unrecognizable. Some of the stock will also be new to the community. “The store is coming along really well. They’re going to be some great things out here that people have never seen before, some great brands they haven’t been exposed to,” Mazzone said, adding that having brands like Ace Hardware and Benjamin Moore Paint as partners allows them to do more. “There’s going to be a lot more name brand products and a lot more variety of products in a clean, organized location.” The store will be fully stocked with a variety of hardware items, but Mazzone expects some of the big sellers in the store to be things like paint, which they’ll have a huge selection of, plus outdoor items like Big Green Egg grills and lawn and garden products. There will also be a

key machine with wider capabilities than what Browns had offered. While much will be different, there will be some familiar faces behind the counters and in the aisles. Hanna herself will still be working at the store, along with much of the former staff. “The previous owner was really concerned about the staff losing employment when the store closed, so we kept most of the staff and hired a few additional people. Just about everyone is local, with the exception of the manager,” Mazzone said. As Browns was a big supporter of the community, Mazzone plans to do the same. The business has long been active in their local Brooklyn communities. “Two things we’re heavily involved in is this charity called the Children’s Miracle Network, which is supported by Ace Corporate. Through the charity, money is raised to go to local children’s hospitals around the community. The second is community events. We do a whole host of community events in Carroll Gardens like a pumpkin fest, a tree lighting and Veterans and Memorial Day
events, and we’re certainly looking to get involved in some of the events that are out here in Rockaway. We plan to be a part of these events, one way or another and do what we can to supports these things and be a part of the community,” Mazzone said. Mazzone says the store is a much-needed addition and community support has already been strong. “I didn’t realize how bad the community needed this until I was out here working on the store and I forgot some supplies and there was nowhere to really go to get them. Places like Breezy Point Hardware are nice, but this will bring even more options to the peninsula,” he said. Residents are already looking forward to the opening. “I can’t stand outside for more than five minutes without someone coming up and wishing us well and asking when we’re going to be open.” Mazzone is looking forward to it as well. “We’re excited to be here and offer some great items and brands. I want to thank everyone because people have been so gracious and helpful and we’re really looking forward to being a part of the community,” he said. As they work on the finishing touches this weekend, Mazzone Ace Hardware is expected to be open on Monday or Tuesday. The hours will be Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The old Browns phone number will remain the same: 718-945-5669. We Won! We Won! The Rockaway Times has done it again. For the third year in a row, we took home an award from the New York Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest. Not bad for only being in business for three years. Last weekend, The Rockaway Times joined more than 150 other newspapers from across the state for NYPA’s 2016 BNC awards and newspaper conference in Saratoga Springs, NY. This year, 184 newspapers submitted 2,957 entries, competing for 67 categories. The winners were presented their awards during NYPA’s Spring Convention on April 7 and 8. The entries were judged by members of the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association. This year, The Rockaway Times took home
second place for Best Overall Use of Social Media. Upon entering, we shared links to our social media pages on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, demonstrating how we share a variety of interesting posts to keep our readers engaged and provide things that don’t quite make it into the newspaper, like videos of sunsets, local bands, events, and the whale that washed up last week (which reached more than 520,000 people!). We maintain a large following across our social media platforms, including more than 11,000 followers on Facebook, more than 3,800 on Instagram and more than 1,600 on Twitter. Our accounts are maintained by Editor Katie McFadden and Publisher Kevin Boyle. In their decision, the judges said, “Uses at
least the big three social media platforms to varying degrees of engagement but also includes a variety of posts to diversify content on each platform.” The Suffolk Times, Mattituck took first in the category and The Southampton Press-Eastern Edition took third. In 2015, The Rockaway Times won an award for Best Special Section with our 2nd Anniversary of Hurricane Sandy publication. Last year, Katie McFadden took home an award for feature writing. This is the third award for The Rockaway Times. In a digital world, The Rockaway Times understands the importance of maintaining a strong social media presence, and doing it in a fun way. If you’re not following our accounts already, what are you
waiting for? Follow us on Facebook (https:// www.facebook.com/ RockawayTimes/) for interesting photos, videos, links to articles and random fun. Follow us on Instagram (https:// www.instagram.com/ rockawaytimes/) for unique photos and videos that we take around town. We also use Twitter (https://twitter. com/rockawaytimes) on occasion, so check us out there. Perhaps other apps like Snap-
chat will also be used in the future. And while we’re speaking of digital platforms, make sure to sign up for The Rockaway Times by email. Every week, bright and early on Thursday morning, you’ll have the full version of the newspaper delivered to your email inbox. The Mush You know what I got? I got ungatz. I’m a mush. I bought a bunch of raffle tickets at the Greybeards Dinner Dance in January and all my purchases became pure donations. I rolled that lack of good fortune into three different Super Bowl boxes and didn’t come close. And then… Well, first let me explain mush. I’m pretty sure mush is familiar to anyone who’s taken a bus to Atlantic City with a roll of quarters or who’ve lost their rent gambling. But for those who’ve been wise and/or stingy enough to avoid the pitfalls of gambling, you might not be familiar with the patron saint of losers: Edward Mush. Mr. Mush was made famous in the movie, A Bronx Tale. His losing ways were legendary as he could turn any sure thing into a longshot. But his mis-
fortune wasn’t contained to himself. Anyone in his vicinity, anyone making the same bet as him, was done. In the movie, tellers at the racetrack betting booth handed him his tickets already ripped up – saving him the trouble. Mr. Mush was the personification of bad luck and spread his misfortune inadvertently. Evil Eye Fagin, on the other hand, spread bad luck on purpose. He was a character from the Bowery Boys who’d cast a bad luck spell on you if you made eye contact with him and his bugged-out eyeballs. My luck has been so bad lately, I’m starting to wonder if one of you gave me the evil eye and I was too obtuse to notice. Yea, some of my readers can be pretty treacherous. And those are my friends. I capped off my season of mush with the NCAA Basketball Tournament. I was in an NCAA survivor pool. The premise is you have to pick the

winner of ONE game a day. One. The trick is you can’t pick the same team again throughout the tournament. But I pick with a kiss. The Kiss of Death. The SMU basketball team is out looking for me because I picked them. I also had a box for the Championship game. You win based on the numbers of the final score. The guys who ran the box treated me like the racetrack tellers treated Mush. They gave me letters instead of numbers. My mushiness extended to merely rooting for a team. I didn’t have to have money invested in the outcome. I’d tune into a game just to watch. I’d have no particular preference for either team but I’d usually pull for the underdog. Invariably, the games I watched had the underdog surge out in front. I’d get caught up in the hysteria and as soon as I committed my rooting interest, the mush gods would awaken. Without fail!
When you’re bad luck you change the channel. Because, you know, logic tells you that if you’re not watching, the team will do better. I will swear that this is true. There have been times when things were going bad, I have left the room and then a few minutes later, from three rooms away, I hear the TV. Good things are happening again. The underdog has a shot. I can’t stay away. I go in to see what all the excitement’s about. And I mush them. I’ve even tried rooting for the other team hoping some sort of reverse mush would work. Doesn’t work. The scary thing is when you’re on a mush roll you think everything can be affected by your bad luck. I had my car washed the other day and then it rained. Sorry, I mushed the day for the rest of you. Anyway, I’m betting things get better. Ah, sh*t, shouldn’t have said that.

Injured Seal Found on Beach 106th Story and Photo By Katie McFadden
Last week, we had a whale, and this week yet another sea creature was found on our beaches. On Tuesday, April 11, a young gray seal decided to pay Rockaway a visit, or perhaps to recover. Unfortunately, the animal appeared to have been attacked by something, leaving large wounds on the lower half of its body. On Tuesday afternoon, the young creature came out of the water to take a break on Beach 106th Street. A seal visiting our beaches had become a yearly occurrence in the spring. Seals will often relax on rocks or a beach to enjoy some time in the sun. However, the animal on Tuesday had some deep wounds, which caused alarm among those who came across it. Some believed the wounds were caused by a predator, like a shark, or a boat. Witnesses immediately called the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation out in Long Island, the goto rescue organization for local injured sea mammals. Officers from the 100 Precinct also responded to keep crowds away from the animal, as to not cause further stress. Several further calls were made to Riverheard from community members, who were concerned that nothing was being done quick enough to help the animal. Riverhead said they were overwhelmed with calls on Tuesday, as they had other reported strandings along Long Island. The volunteer organization reassured callers that they were aware of Rockaway’s seal and would respond if necessary, by Wednesday morning. “Thank you to those who have reported the seal located in Rockaway! Based on the reports, videos, and the many photos we have received, our team has decided to monitor this animal for 24 hours. While it does have a couple of small wounds, the seal is alert and exhibiting normal behaviors. If the seal is still in the area in the morning our Rescue Team will respond to reassess the ani-

mal's condition,” The Riverhead Foundation posted to its Facebook page. Some residents were concerned that something must be done to help the seal, with some suggesting pouring water on it, feeding it, or even picking it up and bringing it to Riverhead themselves. All of these suggestions are incorrect and should not be followed. According to the Riverhead Foundation, the best thing to do if you come across a seal on the beach, is to keep your distance. They advise to stay at least 50 yards away. Seals can be aggressive and can bite or use their sharp claws to scratch. There is also a risk that they’re carrying a disease. Riverhead also said it is a common behavior for a seal to be on the beach, and it is referred to as “hauling out.” It is done for several reasons, including to rest, to warm themselves, or to avoid predators. If water is poured on an animal or forced to return to the water, it may become hypothermic. They may also haul out due to injury, and Riverhead advises people to stay away so the animal does not return to the water before a Rescue Team responds. If you see an animal on the beach, besides staying clear, the best thing to do is to call the NY State Stranding Hotline at 631-369-9829. On Wednesday afternoon, Riverhead said, "Our Rescue Team responded to a gray seal located in Rockaway this morning. The seal was brought back to our hospital facility where a full physical was conducted and it is currently resting in one of our rehabilitation tanks." Visit www.riverheadfoundation.org to donate and help the Riverhead Foundation's future rescue efforts.

Far Rock Enchantress Empowers Mothers of Special-Needs Children By Kami-Leigh Agard From being an exotic dancer, special education teacher, improvisational actor, parent coach, and self-described enchantress, Far Rockaway resident, Shane Kulman defiantly, and regally embodies — “everywoman.” Kulman, a Brooklyn native, seeking the ocean, moved to a bungalow in Far Rockaway in 2015. “After living in Brooklyn all my life, I started dreaming of living in my own witch’s cottage near the ocean. A friend told me to check out Rockaway. After reading an article about local artist and former president of the Beachside Bungalow Preservation Association of Far Rockaway, Richard George, I was immediately wooed,” Kulman said. Kulman corresponded with George, and was won over by his love for the community and preserving the bungalows, not to mention the thriving artists’ enclave living there. Months later, she moved in. “I am now living in a redone bungalow, my little dream home in a community that has become my family,” Kulman said. So how did Kulman go from exotic dancing — to working as a teacher with children on the autism spectrum — to improv acting — to coaching parents with special-needs children? Kulman, who has a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and a master’s in Special and Early Childhood Education, explained, “Believe it or not, exotic dancing was the stepping stone that inspired me. For 11 years I was an exotic dancer. During this time I learned that men and children give themselves permission to play, when women don’t. We often feel that we are not enough or too much. I got to really enjoy being seen. Being a stripper for me was a celebration of my body, my face, my personality. “I could have been suicidal. I grew up loathing myself. These
feelings haven’t all dissipated, but they are less meaningful. So I believe that working as an exotic dancer for all those years was really symbolic because I learned many things about myself and others. I am a listener. I focus on and absorb people. I never used to disclose my past as an exotic dancer, but I have come to the realization that I learned a lot about people just from doing it. It was a invaluable time of inflection and reflection,” she said. Kulman decided to continue working with others, but this time with children. She began teaching, but hated the conformist structure of the public educational system. “When I was a pre-school teacher, I knew that working in groups was not my passion. I knew how more helpful I could be if I worked with one child at a time. So I left and started working with the agency, Variety Child Learning Center in their Special Education Itinerant Teacher (SEIT) program, which specializes in teachers who work-on-one with special-needs children. I worked with kids ages three to five, either in their homes or in their schools,” she said. Kulman learned a lot from working with children on the autism spectrum. “I was at first taken aback by how some of them did not automatically like me, when throughout my career most children did. For example, one child just preferred to line up his video boxes, rather than pay attention to me. After a while I learned to relax and be present with them, not to push any agenda or specific goals, but to meet them where they’re at. “Then these children started to trust me. I learned that speech is not the only way to communicate. There is so much communication in behavior. So when I was working with nonverbal children, I was able to join their world, and appreciate their little Continued on page 11

Continued from Page 10 quirks, and together we had the best time. “I worked with this Egyptian family who came to the U.S. for the sole purpose of getting help for their nonverbal threeyear-old autistic child. When I arrived at their home, the little boy is jumping everywhere, staring at the ceiling fan, and I felt the mother’s longing, like please help me. So I started working with the little boy by first using the overrated Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) technique. Getting a child to do what I want, and then reward them with a cookie, is just silly, so I decided to just play with him. One day, I sprayed this lavender spray I had in my bag and the next day he looks at me and makes the psssh, psssh sound of the spray. No words, but he was asking me for the lavender spray. He was curious about me, not my bag of toys or artificial goals that were set for him.
“It wasn’t about me teaching him the color red. It was about connecting with him, relationship building that made him want to learn. Who wants to hang out with anybody who just harps on the goals you can’t reach?” Kulman said. Kulman went on to open her own business, Our Beautiful Child, to work exclusively with parents and kids. “I realized
that the crucial work was working with moms. If a parent is not working on developing their own inner strength, they pass on their own issues in a nonconscious way. Parents who realize the power of support will learn how to introduce behaviors that set a child up for success. “Simultaneously while working as a parent coach, I began improv acting, which was so helpful. There were exercises where we were mirroring our actions and learning how to be present, and with kids, you need to be present. I was learning how to pay attention to my own physical behaviors and the subtext of what I was saying versus what I was really saying. If I say to a child point to the color red, what they may be hearing is ‘this is boring and annoying, just do it so we could be done already.’ Children, autistic or not, sense what adults are feeling, and as a result shut down internally. So sometimes it’s not about the actual words, but the subtext of what we are really saying. “I met a lot of moms who were depressed and did not
Page 11 know how to handle their special-needs child. I felt like parents expected me to fix their kid. So I really got to be in the minds of mothers. I observed that they were not feeling empowered to work with their children. They were trusting everyone else to do it for them. I want moms to see their greatness, which ultimately will empower their children,” Kulman said. Kulman recently opened in Rockaway another business, Enchanted Embodiment, to help women embrace their power and “live a badass life and stop putting ourselves down. We deserve to own businesses, have lovers, feel good in our bodies,” she said. Enchanted Embodiment will be hosting a women’s retreat at the Rockaway Retreat House on June 16 through June 18th. For more information visit: enchantedembodiment.com “This retreat will be a magical weekend to really dive into and celebrate the divine femininity, instead of going through life exhausted and blaming ourselves,” Kulman said.

Ferry to Sail in May, But $8 Parking? The ferry is coming, even sooner than expected. Last week, the city announced that the Rockaway ferry, the first route of the new citywide service, will begin on May 1, a whole month ahead of schedule. But you may want to use the free shuttle to get to it. It's going to cost $8 a day to use the Beach 108th Parking Lot. On Thursday, April 6, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the early ferry run. “Rockaway residents have some of the longest commute times in the city. We promised we’d bring them our new NYC Ferry service first, and today we’re delivering on that promise. Best of all, our first NYC Ferry will set sail May 1, a full month ahead of schedule,” he said. The new citywide ferry service, now being branded NYC Ferry, will carry an estimated 4.6 million passengers a year across its six routes, 20 vessels and 22 landings. The first to launch will be Rockaway. The ride, which will go between Beach 108th Street and Beach Channel Drive, make a stop at Brooklyn
Army Terminal and then on to Pier 11 in Wall Street. The whole ride will take about an hour and will cost riders the same as a MetroCard, which is currently $2.75. There will be discounts for seniors, children and those with disabilities Riders will be able to transfer to other ferry routes for free, but not to the subway or buses. Rockaway riders will have access to a free shuttle bus service to and from the ferry landing at Beach 108th Street. The shuttle bus route will go from Beach 35th Street to Beach 169th Street. In addition to the shuttle service, the new 120-space parking lot will be open 7-days a week from 5am to 11pm. NYCEDC selected an operator, Propark America, to make parking spaces available for $8/day, with monthly passes available for $100. This pricing is consistent with other City-owned parking lots in the vicinity. This parking lot will be open to all, not just ferry riders, meaning summer visitors can also park there. While a detailed schedule
is still being finalized, the city also recently announced that the Rockaway ferry will have an early start. At the request of local residents, many of which are construction workers with early starts, the first ferry will leave Rockaway at 5:30 a.m. Service ends at 10 p.m. The ferry will operate seven days a week. The start of the Rockaway route will be followed by the South Brooklyn Route on June 1 and the Astoria route in August. The Lower East Side and Soundview Routes will be launching in 2018. The East River route will also be part of the citywide service starting in May. The citywide service will be operated by Hornblower. Several of the ferry landings, including Rockaway, are already complete. The first of the new vessels arrived in New York Harbor last week, with more boats scheduled to depart shipyards in Louisiana and Alabama in the coming weeks. The boats, which will carry up to 150 passenger, will have WiFi. The boats will be able to accom-
modate those with disabilities. Passengers will also be able to bring a bike on board for a $1 fee. Local elected officials were elated to hear that the city is listening to their constituents’ demands. “Residents of the Rockaways are in desperate need of additional transportation opportunities, so bringing NYC Ferry to the peninsula a month early will help get residents to Manhattan more easily and alleviate the crowded A train and local buses,” Council Member Donovan Richards said. “We're very excited that plans have come together to start ferry service earlier than expected,” Council Member Eric Ulrich said. “We're especially thankful to hear the news that the EDC has been receptive to the concerns of my constituents with regard to scheduling an additional early trip which will allow so many hard working people in the construction trades the opportunity to use this service.” For updates and new information on the ferry, check out ferry.nyc.

Poop in Your Own Can
Dear Editor: Dearest responsible dog owners: Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your concern about dog poop. It is wonderful to see you walking your pets, leash in one hand and a baggie in the other. We are heading in the right direction! However, I would appreciate it if you would take the bagged poop home with you for disposal INSTEAD of depositing in my garbage can! DSNY although the strongest, will not remove your baggie and I certainly don't blame them. Walt Rutherford
Dear Idea Guys: I wish that some entrepreneurial spirit in Rockaway or Broad Channel would start a kind of "Freecycle" website for our neighborhood, where people can post descriptions of things that they would love to give away, rather than throw out and then, through this website, connect with people who would like to pick up said items and save themselves some money. Over the years, I've tried to search and connect people with items that they need that were originally slated for the garbage. I've reconnected people with chairs, dressers, tablecloths, bags of same-size bottles, coffee tables, but I'm tired of doing this and would love to see a website that does it for me. There, people could either advertise their address for a pick up, or just state the day and time they are
throwing out their furniture, bikes, etc., and whoever is interested can pick them up before sanitation comes. My saddest day was when I couldn't connect anyone with a slightly used upright piano that was slated for the dumpster, and it was left so long out in the cold and rain, that it truly turned into garbage--a sad fate for a Wurlitzer piano that could have made a family very happy. So, all you young computer savvy people, can you start a Rockaway/Broad Channel website to connect discarders and picker-uppers? Ruth Graves Not a Yoga Park
Dear Editor: Regarding the 4/6 article District 32 PB Votes are Are In) I would like to clear up a pervasive misconception about the labyrinth that was funded. Ms. Agard concludes her saying: Stay tuned for our new yoga park!
Page 13
The proposal is for the creation of a permanent labyrinth adjacent to the Boardwalk on Shore Front Parkway. We already have a temporary labyrinth on B. 79th St. The labyrinth is an ancient pattern found in many cultures around the world. In Native American tradition, the labyrinth is identical to the Medicine Wheel, in Celtic tradition it is the Never Ending Circle and in mystical Judaism it is the Kabala. One feature labyrinths have in common is that they have one path, customarily an Eleven Circuit path made according to Sacred Geometry, that winds in a circuitous way to the center. I created the labyrinth in Rockaway as a tool for healing from PTSD and associated mental and physical disorders that arose from Hurricane Sandy. It is proven to decrease anxiety, depression, PTSD, hyper-
tension, IBS, and even suicidal thoughts in middle-schoolers. Labyrinths are currently being used world-wide as a way to quiet the mind, recover a balance in life and encourage meditation, insight, self-reflection and stress reduction. The labyrinth is open to all people as a non-denominational, cross-cultural blueprint for well-being and is accessible to accessible to all. It will be constructed of the same materials as the boardwalk, suitable for wheelchairs, strollers, walkers. The labyrinth is NOT a yoga park. There is proposed adjacent space where yoga can be done but the project that was funded is for the construction of a labyrinth. Lights…Camera…Action? NYPD OFFICERS SOON TO DON BODY CAMERAS By Kami-Leigh Agard
This is no movie set, but real life drama on our local streets soon to be filmed by our NYPD patrol officers in their encounters with civilians. In response to massive civil complaints against New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers, the city is set to deploy the first body cameras at the end of the month to patrol officers after resolving some controversial and touchy issues on when to switch on the camera, how long to keep the tape and when to tell the public they’re being recorded. According to the proposal, which must be approved by Peter Zimroth, the NYPD federal monitor, officers will turn on their cameras for arrests, summonses, vehicle stops, interactions with crime suspects, interactions with a
mentally unstable person who may be violent, or when using force. They will record property searches, but they won’t record demonstrations unless there is a crime or other enforcement. The tapes will be kept for a year and the footage will be released publicly only in certain cases. The body-worn cameras must be shut off when dealing with sex crime victims, confidential informants, as well as at internal meetings. About 1,200 officers in 20 precincts who work the evening shifts around the city will get the cameras starting at the end of the month. The first to get them will be officers in Manhattan’s 34th precinct in Washington Heights. All precincts are expected to implement the use of body cameras by 2019. Are Rockaway’s local 100 and 101 precincts next on the bill for the
roll out? The NYPD is hush, hush about what precincts will be next. The Rockaway Times contacted the NYPD press office, which simply stated, “No time frame for the 100 and 101 precincts roll out.” However, CBS2 Political Reporter Marcia Kramer reported last Friday, April 7 that just in the month of February, 101 Precinct received 17 civil complaints filed with the Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB), an independent municipal agency that investigates complaints of NYPD misconduct. Compare this number to Manhattan’s 34th Precinct, which is the first precinct on the body cameras rollout, which only received four complaints. According to the CCRB, just for the month of February 2017, 101 Precinct, ranked first out of all 75 precincts across the five boroughs with the most com-
plaints, up from being ranked 17th in the same month last year, February 2016. In the same month of February 2017, 100 Precinct ranked 69th and in February 2016 ranked 45th. The Board added, “CCRB commends the city and the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association (PBA) for reaching a contract agreement that mandates the use of body-worn cameras to the entire police workforce by 2019. Video footage of police-civilian encounters provides a more definitive account of events and has assisted CCRB in conducting faster and thorough investigations. The implementation of body cameras will undoubtedly bring greater transparency, improve police accountability and increase public trust.” However, the unions representing detectives, lieutenants

and captains, and deputy inspectors say their input was never sought by police brass. Yet they are expected to supervise the officers wearing the cameras and help implement and run the program. Thus, after months of delays, the NYPD issued its proposal to outfit its entire force with body cameras — with a few caveats. — Activation of cameras: Mandatory activation during
all enforcement and investigative encounters. Mandatory deactivation during interactions with confidential informants or sex crime victims, as well as internal meetings and training. — Viewing of footage: An officer may view his or her own, and other officers’ body-worn camera (BWC) footage in the furtherance of official duties (arrest processing, etc.). During an official department investigation, including serious injury

or death of a person, or an officer firearms discharge, the officer concerned may view his or her own BWC recordings at a time deemed appropriate by the supervisor in charge of the investigation before being required a compelled statement. — Retention of footage: Body camera footage will be retained for one year (and can be retained longer on a case by case basis) — Release of footage: The procedure will also cover how and when footage is released to prosecutors, during litigation, and to the public. NYPD wants all cameras activated during “all enforcement and investigative encounters,” and that officers must inform their subjects that they are recording. Officers will receive a daylong training session on how to operate the devices, and will also be able to review their own footage and that of their colleagues during official duties. Footage will be retained for up to a year, although some
The Rockaway Times videos can be deleted. Rockaway locals are ambiguous about this roll out. Mike R. from Rockaway Beach said, “I am pro-blue. The cameras are there to make our officers’ jobs easier and safer, and I’m all for anything that makes it safer them to do their job.” While, Marcus J., also from Rockaway Beach said, “I think it's a great idea, because the police also need to be policed.” Arverne resident Florence Ferguson said, “Like good training, it is another monitoring tool that can be used to provide transparency and protection for both the community and the police. It is however, only as good as the way in which it is used.” Barring any disastrous outcomes, the program will expand to more than 1,000 officers in 22 precincts later this fall. The department hopes to complete the second phase of the program, which involves equipping all 22,000 NYPD officers with cameras, by the end of 2019.

Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Wine About It There is a phenomenon known as the “French paradox. The French have a low risk of developing heart disease despite eating a rich diet. This discrepancy has been attributed to their high rate of consumption of red wine. Red wine contains phenolic compounds, which have antioxidant properties. A recent study explored this phenomenon. The study, done (naturally) in France, examined the blood and urine chemistry differences in two groups of non-smokers who smoked three cigarettes each. The aim
was to explore the effects of “occasional lifestyle smoking, aka social smoking. The control group drank no wine and the study group drank red wine (Chateau Haut-Ponet, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2005, in case you were interested) one hour before smoking. The end point of drinking the wine was a blood alcohol content of 0.075 percent (0.08 is the legal limit in NY). Cigarette smoking causes the release of microparticles from blood cells and the endothelium (the inner lining of blood vessels). These microparticles
Page 17
damage the endothelium often leading to blood clots and atherosclerosis (narrowing of blood vessels). Cigarettes also cause oxidative stress and create free radicals (no, not Joanne Chesimard). Oxidative stress and free radicals can also damage telomeres. Telomeres, like so many words in science, is from the Greek words telos, meaning end, and meros, meaning part, and are found at both ends of chromosomes. When a cell divides, the DNA or chromosomes must be replicated, or copied. Chromosomal replication starts in the middle and proceeds out to both ends, except that it does not go to the very end of the chromosome, it goes almost to the end. The telomeres do not contain genetic material, they are sacrificial. They ensure that the entire chromosome is copied. The new chromosome then makes its own new telomeres. But telomeres shorten as we age, increasing the chance of a genetic copying error. Oxidative stress and free radicals also shorten
telomeres, which may be one of the reasons cigarettes are linked to so many cancers. Now back to our study. The control group had elevated levels of microparticles and shortened telomeres, whereas the study group did not, thanks to the antioxidants in red wine. Other sources of antioxidants are beta carotene and Vitamins C and E. Oxidative stress and free radicals are also caused by stress, physical inactivity, and a high sugar diet. This study was done on non-smoking volunteers and its results cannot be extrapolated to chronic smokers. If you do smoke, do not start drinking a lot of red wine to counteract the bad effects of smoking. You know what you need to do. At any rate, if it had been my study, I would have created a third group – those who just drank the wine and didn’t smoke anything. I would have volunteered for that group! Thank You Al McCarthy!
Just recently I heard the sounds of children playing on the newly-raised, paved and tidal free, shared space street on West 12th Road, as they enjoyed the view of Jamaica Bay from the new bulkhead installation at the end of the block. The children who were enjoying their new shared
space were all too young to know that none of this would have been possible without the tireless efforts of Mr. Al McCarthy, a one-time resident of the street. The town of Broad Channel, and especially the residents of West 12th Road, have long suffered from deteriorating street infrastructure, unsafe conditions and property damage caused by routine and serious street tidal flooding. Numerous requests for assistance from city agencies on this issue were made by individual residents, the Broad Channel Civic Association and elected officials, all of which resulted solely in vague assurances from city agencies that they were aware of this issue and “were working on plans to mitigate” the problem, but unfortunately, no action on the part of the

city was ever undertaken to address this problem. One of the most outspoken advocates on this long standing Broad Channel issue was Al McCarthy of West 12th Road. During March of 2010, Al was the driving force behind the residents of West 12th Road, finally deciding that after years of the city and our elected officials paying only “lip service” to our complaints of serious tidal street flooding, to take matters into their own hands. During the March 2010 nor’easter, and the accompanying severe tidal flooding sustained on W12th Road, Al reached out to New York One (NY1) and arranged for media coverage of the tidal flooding conditions on our block. Immediately thereafter, a petition demanding that the city finally assume its responsibility
for the rapidly deteriorating street conditions and accompanying property damage and unsafe conditions on West 12th Road caused by routine and serious tidal flooding, was signed by all West 12th Road residents and delivered to our elected officials. Shortly thereafter, the office of the Queens Borough President contacted us and advised us that a meeting would be held at Queens Borough Hall to yet again discuss this issue in April 2010. I first met Al McCarthy when our family moved into our house on West 12th Road back in the 90's after making the long trip from the east side of our island (Walton Road) to the west. A day or two after we moved in, Al grabbed me on the street, introduced Continued on page 19

BETWEEN THE BRIDGES
Continued from Page 18 himself and welcomed me to West 12th Road by shoving a tide calendar into my hands and stating "Here kid, you're gonna need this...West 12th is the lowest street in the Channel and we get flooded by the tides all the time." Al also mentioned that my intentional relocation to West 12th Road could be an indication that I needed the assistance of a psychiatrist to explain why I would want to move into a house at the bay end of that street he affectionately referred to as the "swamp." I asked Al, if my move to West 12th Road meant I had issues, how did he explain his longterm residence on the block? Al smiled and responded, "Kid, I don't need a shrink to tell me I'm crazy but you obviously do!" The April 2010 meeting was attended by Al and the majority of all West 12th Road residents, and the large turnout
THURSDAY, APRIL 13, 2017 (especially during an election year) obviously took the city by surprise. It was also sadly apparent that the there still were city representatives who were not fully aware of the history and total scope of this problem as it pertained to the issue of tidal street flooding in Broad Channel and especially W12th Road. The city was also taken aback by the fact that the residents of West 12th Road had invited NY1 media representatives to this meeting. (Note: the city would not allow NY1 to attend the meeting in the conference room, but they waited outside in Borough Hall in order to conduct interviews with all attendees afterward.) It goes without saying that “there is strength in numbers” and faced with the prospect of a large group of people speaking with one voice, with a media presence right outside the door, suddenly the issue of tidal flooding was no longer an exercise in street grade level engineering and environmental science!
Truth be told, there were some naysayers on the block who told us that we were "spinning our wheels and wasting our time" because the "City was not going to do anything to help us." When I would ask Al about this defeatist attitude among some of our other neighbors, he told me, "If all you're gonna do is write some letters and hope for the best, then you are wasting your time. You have to continually bother them with telephone calls, go meet with them, face-to-face, and become a royal pain in their ass! Sooner or later, they will get tired of hearing from you and give you what you want to shut you up!" Less than one month after our April 2010 meeting, Borough President Marshall personally came to West 12th Road during May and held a press conference to announce that $24 million in funds had been allocated to fund a project addressing the problem of tidal street flooding, the design phase of
Page 19 which would commence with West 12th Road! It took seven more years, but in April of this year, the street has been transformed. Sadly, one year after Sandy ravaged our community, Al passed away in October of 2013 and did not live to see the fruits of his decades-long efforts finally realized, but all of us should remember that it was his continual sense of optimistic purpose and acerbic wit that finally got the ball moving with the Flood Mitigation Project (new bulkhead and street raising) that was completed earlier this month on both West 11th and 12th roads in Broad Channel. Thank you Al! Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

To Have Hope in Your Life Whenever I hear the word hope spoken, I think of the word faith. One who has hope has the power to believe. The definition of hope is a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. Hope is a positive way of thinking. The opposite is hopeless. Choose to have hope and it will make all the difference. Hoping for something to happen
is similar to saying a prayer or setting an intention. We hope for the best and prepare for the worst. I try to stay hopeful every day of my life and give hope to others. Do you ever find yourself saying, “I hope he gets the job, or “let’s hope this works out,” or “I hope you feel better.” We are really hopeful people and

Going through a loss of a spouse, parent, child, friend or neighbor can be very difficult, but if you have faith, you will feel hopeful that life will get better. You will move on and learn to live life to its fullest potential. I believe we are on the greatest journey in life and now is the time to be present with what is. We never know when this part of the journey is over and I am not sure what comes next but I am hopeful that there is life after death. I stay on the path because I am full of hope and believe in a source much higher than myself. I cannot imagine not having hope. Hope gives us peace and serenity.
The Rockaway Times I hope whoever is reading this finds peace in their heart and knows that there is always hope. Always! Never let anyone tell you otherwise. Be strong and resilient. Never let the ghost of darkness get into you. Have hope; it will lead you to faith. I hope you are happy, healthy, peaceful, safe and at ease. Breathing in, I am here, breathing out, I am aware. “Hope” is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul And sings the tune without the words And never stops - at all And sweetest - in the Gale is heard And sore must be the storm That could abash the little Bird That kept so many warm I’ve heard it in the chillest land And on the strangest Sea Yet - never - in Extremity, It asked a crumb - of me.” Emily Dickenson

From the Writers’ Club of PS/MS 114 HEAVENLY BODIES- PART 2 “Don’t publish these essays, nobody would believe this is the work of fifth-graders,” a colleague commented. But, I have faith in our readers, and I know that this is what they’ve come to expect from the Writers’ Club of PS/MS 114. (Following are excerpts from essays that can be read in their entirety in our annual literary magazine published in June. Joan Diehl
HANDS By Luke Wasserman
My father always says, “I have the hands of a grown man,” probably because these hands of mine are bigger than most adult hands. People who don’t know much about me, call them “goalie hands.” I did play soccer for a few years but that was not my interest—I am a baseball player. And, in the words of Maya Angelou, “I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back.” When I’m free, I look at these hands and reflect on all of the things that they have done. When I was a little boy, they gripped a pencil, scribbled my first letters, and stacked blocks to make a castle. They did, and still do, attach pieces to make Lego sets of landmark buildings such as The White House and Big Ben. They shoot baskets and catch baseballs. They throw and catch a football. They hold my brother’s hand as I help him cross the street. They pet my dog as she curls up into a ball on my lap... One day, my hands will drive my car as I head to the baseball draft. They will put on an MLB Jersey before I head to the game that will make history. Then, these hands of mine will throw the first pitch of an MLB game—they will grip
my glove as I strike out the last batter. They will open the gates of the Bronx Bombers stadium, and I will remember all of the things that led me to this moment… Someday my hands will grip younger hands as I teach my children the wisdom that I learned at their age. I will throw back whatever I learned, and teach it to younger minds.
EARS By Devon Conrath
If we have listening ears, God speaks to us in our own language, whatever that language may be. Ears open the gates to the heart. Maybe, that’s why if you put two ears together they’ll form a heart. If you know how to listen, you know how to love. Gossip dies when it hits a smart person’s ears. As Epictetus said, “We have two ears and one mouth so we can listen twice as much as we speak.” If you do so, you will understand what the person you are talking to, is really thinking. The biggest communication problem is that we do not listen to understand— we listen to reply. God gave us mouths that close and ears that don’t, and that was done for a purpose.
HANDS By Sophia Pesso
My father once told me I have the “hands of an artist,” probably because I am constantly drawing, and painting. I agree with him, although I also think I have “writing hands.” I always find my hands curling around a pencil, writing stories and poems. Sometimes, I look down at my hands and my mind is caught up with all the things they’ve done. My hands grasp paintbrushes, ready to create a beautiful work of art.

They clutch the handle of a baseball bat, hoping to hit a homerun on the Rockaway Little League Field. They hold a pencil in an attempt to write like Roald Dahl. My hands stroke the clear, sky-blue water as I lift my head to breathe when I swim. They reach out to give my family and friends affectionate hugs. My hands hold up my twinkling, golden trumpet as I perform in the P.S./M.S.114Q band. Someday, my hands will hold my high school diploma as I speak out to the entire senior class as the valedictorian. Someday, I hope my hands will hold the acceptance letter to New York University in their prestigious architectural program, where I will design one of New York City’s most inspirational buildings - my dreams are tied to my heart and hands.
LEGS By Christina Cretella
My legs are very important to me. Like Albert Einstein wrote, "The legs are the wheels to creativity." I think Einstein meant that our legs could bring us to creative places with extraordinary and brilliant ideas. I agree with Einstein because my legs have brought me to places that have filled me with joy! Often, I look at my legs and remember the great things they've enabled me to do: When I was a toddler, my legs helped me take my first steps. They brought me to my first day of kindergarten. Later, they brought me to my elementary school— a creative place where I looked to succeed. They helped me pedal my bicycle when I was four. When I ran a race, I knew my legs would run as fast as a cheetah. They brought me to my first basketball and volleyball game.
EARS By Sophie Zajdel
My music teacher has always told me, that I have “the ears of an owl.” That is most likely because I can hear any mistake coming from any instrument in the music room. Those teachers who have caught me daydreaming say that I need to use my ears more…. Although I tend to daydream and drift away like a boat not tied to the dock, these ears of mine listen to every crucial word taught in class. Under it all, I primarily use these ears to cherish the beautiful sounds of music. As Voltaire once said “The ear is the avenue to the heart,” and my ears cherish each sensational sound...
LEGS By Lauren Valdemira
According to my father, back in the 1980s there was a song that went, “She’s got legs, and she knows how to use them!” That song applies to me because I use my legs to do so many wonderful things. When I am using my legs to skateboard, I feel like a bird soaring through the clouds. When rollerblading, my legs move like a train engine chugging down the tracks. These same legs become froglike when I’m swimming at a swim meet. On my soccer team, my legs help me shoot the ball like a cannonball! Running—I feel like my legs make me faster than a horse at the Kentucky Derby. In a few months, I’ll use my legs to walk into a brand new middle school. Someday, I’ll use my legs to drive myself to high school or even to college! One day, these legs will also walk me down the aisle when I get married and push my future children in their stroller. As you can see, “I’ve got legs and I know how to use them, “ and I’ll be using them all my life.

Driftwood Art By Artie Wallace
I’d like to start off thanking Katie McFadden for the wonderful article last week. Now for the driftwood art… Living near the beach, a lot of people would like a touch of the beach in their home. This is an easy and creative way to get that look and feel. 1- Start off with a piece of ¼ inch plywood. Cut it to the shape you like for your project and drill a small hole in the top center (for hanging your artwork). 2- Lay out your driftwood on the plywood (you can use stones or shells to fill spaces) to the pattern you like. Once you lay it out, you may want to make changes, so don’t glue anything yet. Don’t hesitate to incorporate smaller pieces (twig-size)
into your pattern too. It will add a little depth to its appearance. 3- Once you have the pattern set, move the driftwood off the plywood and lay it on the side (in the same pattern as your design). 4- Coat your plywood with Liquid Nail using a brush and a quart can (not the tubes). 5- Apply a little Liquid Nail to the back of each piece of driftwood (or shells/rocks) as you place them on the plywood. Allow to dry for a few hours before moving it. 6- Once your project is completed, apply a spray-on clear coat. Be sure to do this in a well-ventilated area and not near anything that can be damaged, should it get the clear coat on it. For indoor display of your artwork, repeat twice. For outside display, repeat four times.
Remember to be creative. Artwork should display what you like, not what you think others will like.
If there is a project you would like to see in The DIYer, email me at rocktimesdiy@gmail.com

Last Shot at the Photo Contest! By Katie McFadden
Last call! The deadline for the Rockaway Times Photo Contest is Friday, April 14. We’ve already received more than 400 entries, but if you haven’t submitted already, this is your last shot! All of the entries will soon be put on display for the first round of judging as we get closer to deciding who gets the $500 top prize. The Rockaway Times’ first photo contest was such a hit, that we decided to do it again. Our readers have been submitting photos since we opened it at the end of February. From stellar sunsets to skilled surfer shots, the judges will have a tough time picking their favorites. Six judges will have to narrow down more than 400 photos to decide which top 30 will move on to the next round. They'll be doing so on Saturday, April 22 at 6 p.m.,
when the photos will be on display in 4 x 6 prints at the Bungalow Bar on Beach 92nd Street. The general public is also welcome to check out the competition. This year, we narrowed the categories down from 10 to five, to make things a little easier. These include 1) Sunsets/sunrises 2) Beach shots (surfers, lifeguards, jetties, beach fun) 3) Bayside shots (the skyline, Jamaica Bay, boats, etc.) 4) Animals/Pets (dogs, whales, birds) and 5) Miscellaneous (things that are relevant to the area, but don’t fit any of the other categories). We asked that everyone submit no more than two entries per category, meaning up to 10 photos total. If you haven’t entered yet, please send your photos with your name and category to PhotoExpo@rockawaytimes.com by Friday. After the photos are narrowed down on April 22, the top 30 will go on to the next
round. All of these semi-finalists will be printed on large 2 x 3-foot posters, which will be displayed along the boardwalk at Beach 17th, Beach 59th, Beach 67th, Beach 98th and Beach 116th Street, thanks to the Department of Parks and Recreation. The photos will be up in time for the beach opening ceremony, starting on May 25, and will remain until July 9. There is also a chance that this display will spread into Riis Park, where the photos will be close to the area that is home to the Rockaway Artists Alliance, which is helping to make banners and artwork for the contest. The top 30 photos will undergo a second round of judging, and this time it will be by the public. On June 11, people can head to Beach 17th Street at 11 a.m. or Beach 116th Street at 2 p.m. to cast their votes for their favorites. This will also take place on June 17 at 10 a.m. on Beach 67th
Street, 12 p.m. at Beach 59th Street and 2 p.m. at Beach 98th Street. John Cori, who has been instrumental in making this contest possible, will be on hand to help people through the voting process. “We have some crazy awesome pictures,” Cori said. “People really stepped up their game this year. It’s going to be really tough for the judges, but this is going to be a lot of fun.” After the public judging in June, the top 30 will be narrowed down to a top 10. The final judging will take place at Caracas at the Beach 106th Concession on July 2 at 10 a.m. There, the winner will be announced. The top photo winner will take home a $500 grand prize from The Rockaway Times and will get frontpage recognition. There will also be runner-up prizes like a month-long ferry pass from Hornblower, the operator of the new Rockaway ferry, and more.

BEFORE THE JUKEBOX, THERE WERE THE MECHANICAL BAND ORGANS Written by Emil R. Lucev, Sr. & his daughter Katie Lucev
Many dance emporiums in the Ol’ Rockaways had Orchestras or small bands to supply music for terpsichorean delights. When the musicians went on a break, music was supplied by a Mechanical Band Organ. Arrangements were played from a music roll of paper or a music book of wooden pages, similar to a player piano. The sounds were pleasing to the ear. Real instruments were within
the beautiful enclosure. The machines were imported from Germany and some were domestic. The organs were also used on carousels and still are today!!!

Way to Go NCOs Two neighborhood coordination officers (NCO) stopped a robbery in progress and arrested a suspect wanted for a series of robberies in Far Rockaway, according to NYPD News. Police Officer Claudio Diaz and his partner Police Officer Felix Deleon of the 100 Precinct make it their business to be aware of local concerns and to know those they serve. Investigators in the precinct’s detective squad knew of the two neighborhood coordination officers’ community outreach and enlisted their aid to catch a robbery suspect wanted for five robberies that occurred over a five day period from March 18 to March 22. Police Officers Deleon and Diaz watched video surveillance from the area and spoke to local residents to find information. On Saturday, March 25, the NCO’s were on patrol on Rockaway Beach Boulevard where they planned to speak
with more community members. As the duo approached Beach 94th Street they observed a robbery in progress. They saw the 15-year-old suspect fumbling with his waistband and noticed the handle of a firearm. The officers placed him under arrest and recovered an imitation pistol. The suspect was charged with the robbery, the prior robberies, and criminal possession of a weapon.

NYS TO MAKE STATE COLLEGE TUITION FREE FOR MIDDLE CLASS FAMILIES New York will be the only state in the country to offer free universal public college tuition coverage for working- and middle-class residents under a state budget approved by lawmakers Sunday, April 9. The state's Excelsior Scholarship program will be rolled out in tiers over the next three years, starting with full coverage of four-year college tuition this fall for students whose families make less than $100,000. The income cap will increase to $110,000 in 2018 and $125,000 in 2019. The initiative also includes $19 million for a new tuition award program for students at private colleges. Importantly, Excelsior will be what’s known as a “last dollar” program. That means a student must first apply for TAP and Pell help before applying for whatever amount remains to be covered. Also it will be in-
cluded in the state's Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and students will see that they are eligible when they fill out the forms this spring. The plan crafted by Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo will apply to any New York student whose family has an annual income of $125,000 or less. To qualify the student would have to meet certain class load and grade point average restrictions, and room and board would not be covered. There is no age limit for the program; once students receive the Excelsior Scholarship they must be enrolled full-time with an average of at least 30 credits per year and continue to meet the minimum GPA requirement for their program. Cuomo's office says some 940,000 families will qualify and estimates that the program will cost the state $163 million.

Pheffer Amato Calls For Tolls To Be Abolished On Local Bridges After a long, arduous period in Albany trying to agree on the state budget, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato thanked Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, Governor Andrew Cuomo and both houses “for their leadership in continuing, for another year, the ‘Rockaway Rebate,’” which reimburses the Rockaway peninsula and Broad Channel residents for trips across the Cross Bay Bridge to and from mainland Queens. However, Pheffer Amato was firm on her call to abolish the toll on both the Marine Parkway and Cross Bay Bridges in next year’s state budget. “Residents of Southern Queens often need to pay a two-way toll to work, go shopping or meet friends or family mere minutes from their house,” Pheffer Amato said. “Not to mention, the inequita-
ble and outmoded tolls keeps tourists from easy access to New York City’s only real extended beachfront, costing us millions every year in tourism. This toll is outmoded, has outlived its original stated purpose of paying for the bridge, and hinders the economy. “That’s why I am calling for this toll to be completely abolished in next year’s state budget. I submitted a budget request this year for the Rockaway Rebate to at least apply to all Queens residents, but the toll doesn’t make sense and our goal is to do away with it for good. “This rebate program is crucial for our residents, a no-brainer for our economy, and the very least New York State can do to deal with the unfairness of the only same-borough toll in NYC,” Pheffer Amato said.

Miracle on Beach 88th Street By the KofC
In February of 1996, the members of Msgr. Burke Rockaway Council Knights of Columbus located on Beach 90th street in Rockaway Beach, had dedicated a pro-life Monument in Memory of the Unborn. A Mass was held and the monument was placed alongside the statue of the Sacred Heart on the Council grounds. It remained there for the next 21 years. In October of 2016, the 350 lb. monument was stolen. The monument had remained missing for several months and the mem-
bers decided to start the process to replace it. In the meantime, the question remained: who and how did the 350 lb. stone monument disappear? It was clearly not a random act of vandalism. Were we targeted because of our Catholic faith and pro-life stance? Then one dreary January morning, a local resident was taking a leisurely stroll along the Jamaica Bay shoreline. The tide was ebbing and was abnormally low due to the full moon. While gazing out over the bay, he spotted a small, shiny object that was barely visible several yards from shore. Intrigued by what he saw and curious to identify the object, he stopped and took a picture. He posted it on Facebook, asking if anyone had any idea of what was in the picture? Several members of the Knights thought that they might have recognized the object in the Facebook photo. They immediately contacted the neighbor in order to identify where the photo had been taken and where this strange object was. The neighbor advised that it was located in Jamaica Bay about five feet off shore on Beach 88th and that it
St. Rose Celebrates Holy Week

would not be visible until later in the day, due to the incoming tide. At the time of the afternoon low tide, six members of the Knights met with the neighbor and trudged to the bay. They brought along shovels and rakes, hoping that the barely visible object in the picture was the missing monument. As they arrived at the site, they spotted several swans swimming in circles several feet off shore. To the joy of all, the shiny object that was dumped in the bay and had remained hidden for the past four months was the stolen monument! It was under the
exact area where the swans were swimming! After several minutes of digging through the mud and muck, the monument was retrieved. It took four men to carry the monument more than 50 yards to the street where it was carefully placed in a car. It was brought back to the Knights, where it was cleaned and restored to its original condition. To commemorate the recovery of the monument, the Knights will rededicate the monument with a Mass at the Council on Saturday, May 20 at 9:00 am at the Council Hall. All are invited to attend!
