Get Your Trees!
Unwelcoming Sign This “Welcome to The Rockaways” sign just past the toll both in Broad Channel on the Rockawaybound side of the road lay broken for weeks. We snapped a pic and put it online and now nothing’s there. We hope it went to the sign hospital and will return soon.
QPTC’s Plans for ‘QueensRail’ The Queens Public Transit Committee will be holding workshops all over the area to unveil plans for ‘QueensRail’ a viable alternative mass transit option utilizing the old LIRR line. “Our goal is to replace congested roadways by introducing our plan, QueensRail, the return of the former Long Island Rail Road right of way/ Queens Rockaway Beach Line to rail service,” QPTC Chairman Philip
McManus said. “The restoration of the unused train tracks on the new Queens Rail offers the best strategy that unites and helps all the people of Queens and the region. It is the greenest plan as electric trains produce no pollution.” The QPTC will be holding a workshop in Rockaway on Thursday, April 30, at PS 42 on Beach 66th Street. The meeting will begin at 6 pm.
The warm weather is finally here and tree-giveaway season has begun. There will be several local free treegiveaway events this spring. As part of the MillionTreesNYC initiative to plant one million new trees in New York City, the New York Restoration Project (NYRP) has launched its 15th season of tree giveaways. NYRP is partnering with 62 community organizations to host 65 giveaways throughout the five boroughs to give out 8,750 trees that New Yorkers can plant in their front or back yards, gardens or commercial property. In order to get a tree, you must agree to plant the tree in the five boroughs, commit to keeping the trees watered and properly maintained and the tree must be planted in the ground on a yard and not along streets, in city parks, in containers, terraces, balconies or on roofs. The trees can be reserved in advance at https://www.nyrp.org/treegiveaways for the individual giveaway events. Registration opens at least two weeks before an event. A limited amount of trees will be available firstcome-first-serve at the event for those who didn’t register. The Rockaway Civic Association held the first tree giveaway of the season and the next giveaway is hosted by the Beach 116 Street Partnership and will be held in the parking lot of Sta-
tion Liquor (264 Beach 116th St) from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sunday, April 19. The following giveaway is hosted by Edgemere Farm (385 Beach 45 St) and will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 3. The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance will sponsor a giveaway from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 17 at 5803 Rockaway Beach Boulevard.
RWA Planting Session Sunday This Sunday, April 19, the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance and their partners, Catalyst and Gibney Dance, will be planting shrubs and native grasses to create a natural buffer of dunes along the east end of the peninsula. Prior to planting, there will be light refreshments and storytelling before a walk over to the planting site at Beach 49th Street. The event will start at 11 a.m and last until 3 p.m. All attendees are asked to meet at Firehouse 59 at 5803 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. It is an all ages event and there is no required registration, but students looking to log community service hours are asked to bring paperwork from their respective schools.

Stand Up And Paddle! A new family business is launching in Rockaway. After months of preparation and hard work, A-Team Paddleboarding will officially open its doors on April 18. The store, which is located at 114-04 Beach Channel Drive (right across from The Rockaway Times), is stocked with everything you need to fall in love with paddleboarding. Andrew Dima, who owns the store with his wife Amy, first fell in love with stand up paddleboarding about five years ago. The Blue Bell, PA native discovered the sport while spending the summers on the Jersey Shore where he worked as a lifeguard. Now, only five years later, Dima is a sponsored paddleboard racer and competes in races all year long -- including a 28-mile race around Manhattan. In addition to a new career path, paddleboarding also helped to strengthen the bond between Rockaway’s two newest entrepreneurs. The two “SUP” enthusiasts first met in a gym in Bay Ridge, where Amy is from, more than three years ago. Later on, they bought two paddleboards, moved to Rockaway and the rest, as they
say is on-the-water history. Starting this week, the Dimas are looking to share that passion with the Rockaways. While surfing’s roots are much more well known, most experts believe that, like its oar-less cousin, stand up paddleboarding has been around in some form or another for thousands of years. Ancient cultures from Africa to South America used long sticks to propel boards, canoes, and other watercrafts to fish, travel, fight, and even ride waves. Stand up paddleboarding is becoming more and more popular every summer and Andrew and Amy think now is the perfect time to establish Rockaway’s first paddleboard specific shop. “It’s a peaceful feeling” Andrew said of standing on a board in the open ocean. “It feels surreal to be standing on water.” The store features a full range of boards for paddleboard beginners and crackerjacks alike. The store will also rent equipment for those who want to give paddleboarding a chance before making the proverbial plunge. “It’s an investment,” Andrew Dima said. “But these boards last a long time and I think people will
Andrew And Amy – The A-Team is ready! really love it.” In addition to selling and renting equipment, A-Team will also offer classes and lessons. Each class will be taught by a certified instructor and will last between 60 and 90 minutes. “It’s important to explain water etiquette,” Andrew explained. Despite not being required by law to have their instructors to be certified, every A-Team instructor will be required to be certified before they can teach a class. Each beginner class will start with a 15-minute safety presentation be-
fore getting into the water. A-Team is looking into several options for launching points along the peninsula, but have zeroed in on a couple, including the 72nd Street Marina for now. They will also have stands set up at the beach throughout the summer and are looking into other paddlerelated activities. “There are a bunch of little islands along the bay we can paddle out to,” Amy said. “There’s so much around here that we can explore and travel to, the possibilities are endless.”

Army Corps To Discuss Rockaway Protection The Army Corps of Engineers have been working on its Reformulation Study for years and will begin a public discourse starting Wednesday, April 22, 6:30 p.m. -9:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus, 333 Beach 90th Street. The Reformulation Study will be a blueprint for how Rockaway manages future storm events and rising sea levels. Among the solu-
tions expected to be discussed is an enormous gate that would hold back storm surges. Jetties, sand dunes, bulkheads, and gray and green infrastructure are expected to be addressed as well. Want to know how Rockaway will be protected? Want to add your comments and ideas? Make a point of attending this important meeting.
Restaurant Row’s Newest Member?
Well, this is one of those things that drew a variety of comments online. It seems a new eatery, Beach Slider, will be opening on Beach 99th and RBB. Not too surprisingly, the hand drawn sign was both attacked and praised. Well, you can’t tell a slider by its cover. We’ll give it a taste as soon as it opens.
Residents of the Rockaways are invited to a workshop on the Transition method of increasing community resilience on Saturday, April 18th followed by a storytelling event at Battalion Pentecostal Assembly Church. The Transition Workshop will be led by certified Transition trainer Pamela Boyce Simms, an experienced leader in the U.S. Transition movement. It will offer an in-depth exploration of how Rockaway communities can move toward greater, local self-reliance and climate change resilience. The Transition Neighborhoods Field Guide, a variety of thought provoking exercises, and lots of time for participant sharing, will
facilitate discovery of how resilient Rockaway is now, could potentially be, and how neighbors can actively maximize resilience themselves while supported by Transition networks. The events are free for residents of the Rockaways, and are co-sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Transition Hub (MATH) and Community Service of Far Rockaway. The Transition Workshop will begin at 9 AM and last until 5 PM, it will be followed by a community potluck dinner from 6-7. The storytelling event will begin immediately after that and last until 9:15 PM. RSVP to transition.nyc.hub@ gmail.com, or call (718) 634-7172.

Brush With A Hall Of Famer Some things didn’t get washed away in Sandy. Steve Stathis came by with this piece I wrote 17 years ago. It’s worth a replay because of the recent news that Chris Mullin will be the new head coach at St. John’s. Here’s the time capsule column from 1998: I never hung out with Chris Mullin. Although if I said I did nobody would dispute it and I’d join a list of about 20,000 guys who said they did. The 35-year-old lefty is now
Page 5

starting for the Indiana Pacers who are trying to knock off the defending champs, the Chicago Bulls. Mullin isn’t the player he was when he was getting more than 25 a game for the Warriors. For six straight seasons. But he no longer has to be that player. To no one’s surprise, he’s melded his unselfish brand of ball into a unit full of like-minded veterans. He’s benefited and so have the Pacers who just finished a 58-win season (best in franchise history) and now have a genuine shot at beating the Bulls.
Everybody---a slightly greater number than the people who claim to have been tight with Chris--wants him to do well. As noteworthy as his career has been---15,000 points, four all-star games, First Team All-Pro---his lasting legacy might be more simple and, on the surface, less grand. Long after he’s hit his last sweet jumper, long after he sneaks into a passing lane to make a steal, long after he hits nothing but twine on a foul shot, Chris Mullin will be remembered as a good guy. It’s not easy to root for Indiana. Nobody likes Mark Jackson or Reggie Miller. Jackson could’ve owned New York but he was bush league in the big town. After a first round sweep of the lowly Philadelphia 76ers he and some teammates literally took a broom and started sweeping the floor. This foolhardy indiscretion could’ve been forgiven if he hadn’t thereafter become such a shameless showboater. He’d make a decent play and return up the court with arms out like an airplane. We, Knick fans, loved him as an underdog and hated him as a hot dog. But Chris Mullin? Even though he’s on the other side? Gotta root for him. He’s long been called a gym rat for the infinite hours he’s put in trying to be perfect in an impossible game. Be-
fore the world got to know him as the ultimate gym rat, he was just known as “Chrissy.” He was still Chrissy the time we (me, him, and about 10 other guys) broke into the Xaverian High School gym during winter recess. At the time, I was coaching the freshman basketball team at Xaverian (where Chrissy had gone to school) and called some guys to play pick-up and somehow Chris was in the mix. We got to the gym only to find out that the place was locked because the floor had gotten a new coat of polyurethane a day or two before. Did that stop us? Nope. We had to play. We didn’t notice the scuff marks and deep indentations we were leaving in the floor. As we went up and down the court we were oblivious to the fact that we just ruined the polyurethane job. When Jack Alesi, a school administrator and now varsity coach at Xaverian, found out that we had played on the floor while it was still damp, he was ready to take my scalp. The only explanation I could offer was that “Chrissy” was in town and that he wanted to play and then I mumbled his name a few more times and how, well, you know, the gym rat couldn’t be disappointed. He was going to be an All-American at St. John’s and he was only gonna Continued on next page

By Katie McFadden On Tuesday, April 15, dozens of ladies gathered at Healy’s Pub to paint for a reason. Paint Nite events, in which people can drink while learning how to paint a certain scene, have been around for about a year. Places like Thai Rock and the Rockaway Beach Surf Club host them often, but Tuesday’s Paint Nite at Healy’s was a special event to raise money for Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. Attendees painted a beach scene that featured a heart and starfish. Relay for Life fundraisers have been taking place all across the area from Breezy Point to Broad Channel, to raise money for the major Relay for Life event that will take place at the Broad Channel Athletic Club
on May 16. Relay for Life events are held across the globe to celebrate those who have survived, support those who are still fighting and remember those who were lost to cancer. The Rockaway/Broad Channel event has raised nearly $27,000 so far. There will be another opportunity to participate in a paint fundraiser on Thursday, April 23. For $40, participants will be able to paint a wine glass at 6 p.m. at the BCAC at 125 Cross Bay Boulevard. Tickets can be purchased at http://m.bpt. me/event/1405008. If you’d like to get involved in planning Relay for Life events, a planning meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21 at the Broad Channel Athletic Club.

do it if we let him into the gym and, you know, we had to do our part. And jeez, it was Xaverian, that’s was his court. Jeez, maybe I was the gym rat – ratting him out like that. To his credit, Alesi understood and let me slide. Good thing I had Chrissy as an excuse. The moral of the story is, if you’re going to wreck a gym floor, do it with an All-American--- and a good guy. That memory of that day comes everytime I see Mullin on TV. I also remembered after we played and left behind a court full of potholes, a few of us--- Chrissy included--took a sauna, drank beer in the sauna and shot the bull. So add me to the list: I hung out with Chris Mullin. But that’s the stretch. My sister, Mary, knew him better; they were the same age. She recently
reminded me that she and he were New York state foulshooting champions as 12-year-old kids. In fact, Mullin the previous year, had been a national champ and his name is in the Basketball Hall of Fame for winning that honor as an 11-year-old. The only winner to make it to the NBA. So, it was my sister who knew Chrissy pretty well. And I hung out with my sister once in a while. That connection’s enough for me. So I don’t know about the 20,000 others, but I’m really tight with Chris Mullin. Fast forward to 2015: Other than passing him in a parking lot one time, I never saw him again. And I never got to tell him we were partners in crime and that I got out of trouble by dropping his name. That made him a hall of famer in my book long before Springfield called.

time4adventuredaycare.com Sunday is the 37th Annual Rockaway Rotary Ocean Run/Walk. The event, in honor of the late Barbara Eisenstadt, who was a great champion of Rockaway, will begin and end at Beach 108 and Shore Front. T-shirts and race numbers will be available from 8-9:30 a.m. You can also register in advance by going to RockawayRotary.com ***** Wow. Two weeks ago we set a record with the Taco story with 7,000 views on our website. Last week’s column by Beefchip about Wayne Gretzky blew away the old record. More than 11,000 people viewed the website last Thursday. The heart-tugging story is still available online but we are likely to run it again in the regular paper because we know some of you were away on Easter and Passover break. ***** It’s that time of year. Handyman Artie Wallace will write a Do It Yourself column for The Rockaway Times. If you have a question about how to fix something, you can contact him through he’ll email which he’ll include in each column. ***** The new Jill Weber has been named. Jill, of course, was the long time Parks Administrator for Rockaway. Portia Dyrenforth started her new gig as administrator for the beaches and parks in Rockaway on April 13. ***** Say hello to the Broad Channel Fire Department on April 25th and 26th. They’re having an Open House. ***** Hockey gets overshadowed a bit in these parts (basketball, baseball, rugby, swimming, and track and field and even lacrosse get their fair share of attention). Well, we’re happy to report that two locals are stars on the ice. Brian Ostrander made First Team All-City as the Belle Harbor resident and Xavier High School junior led the entire Catholic High School Hockey League in scoring. His teammate, Matthew Erhard, was a top goaltender for the champion Xavier team and earned Honorable Mention honors. *****
Broad Channel has been subject to heavy airplane noise recently and they’re not just imagining it. Planes have deviated from the “bridge/water” route and noise levels have been recorded by a noise monitor, which the Harnisher family installed on their property (the monitor came via Phil Goldfeder). Want to track the noise for yourself? Go to webtrak5.bksv. com/panynj4 ***** Thousands of jellyfish-like creatures were seen piled up on Rockaway Beach Sunday morning in what appeared to be a massive die-off. Well, that was the lead sentence in a story from Rockaway Beach, Oregon last week. ***** The Rockaway Beach Civic Association is doing its part to recognize Earth Day. The energetic and vital civic is conducting a Spring Clean Up this Sunday at 10 a.m. The target area is under the Rockaway Freeway. Meet at Beach 90th or Beach 98th to help. Gloves and bags will be provided. ***** The Chai Home on Beach 125th and the Ocean will become a Senior Citizen Assisted Living facility according to Robbie Schwach from Eric Ulrich’s office. Construction fencing will going up soon. The building will not be rebuilt but the entire interior will be redone. We contacted Abraham Backenroth, the owner, but did not hear back by the time we went to press. ***** Keep your fingers crossed. MTA Bridges and Tunnels is scheduled to begin work on the Marine Parkway Bridge and Rockaway Point Boulevard Overpass (otherwise known as the road above bus hill). According to reports: Prior to working on the overpass, the TBTA will build a temporary Rockaway Point Boulevard bridge next to the original beginning this week. Traffic is expected to be largely unaffected as the temporary bridge will maintain the same capacity for vehicles. The overpass will be rehabilitated with a substantial portion of the structure being replaced. We called the MTA but couldn’t get clear details about exactly where the temporary bridge will be. *****

Between the Bridges in Broad Channel By Peter J. Mahon
This And That If last Sunday’s spectacular spring weather was any indication, it looks as though Old Man Winter has finally packed up his cold and snow and left town for good. It was great to see dozens of young children and their parents enjoying the warm sunshine at the Gene Gray Playground on 9th Road. For those of you who may not be aware, this playground is named in honor of Broad Channel community activist Eugene Gray (1927-1973). Gray was born on March 14, 1927 in Park Slope, Brooklyn and later moved to Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan. After
attending college, Gray married Lorraine Baker (1929-1977) with whom he had three children: Michael, Gary and Gregory. Gray later moved to Broad Channel and became involved in various neighborhood youth programs, including the Broad Channel Athletic Club, an organization for which he served as president. A community football coach for more than 20 years, Gray also helped to shape and maintain the Broad Channel Football League and assisted in the creation of the local Teen Club, which provided safe recreational
Broad Channel Volunteer Fire department and amBulanCe Corps
activities for the area’s youth. Speaking of the Gene Gray Playground, last week I noticed some very crude graffiti spray-painted on one of the columns of the long unfinished building located at 818 Cross Bay Boulevard directly across from the playground used by our children. Graffiti is not something to be ignored or taken for granted. All of us should be keenly aware that graffiti affects property values, quality of life, and serves to diminish the viability of our community. When graffiti is allowed to remain, it invites more graffiti and can lead to an increase in vandalism and other criminal activity. It must never be tolerated. That said, many thanks to whoever it was that quickly addressed this issue by painting over the crude and offensive graffiti. This past Sunday’s brunch up at the Broad Channel VFW Post 260 was a great success thanks to the men and women of the post who were busy scurrying around the packed hall taking orders, cooking meals, and delivering them to the many hungry residents who attended the event. The complimentary Bloody Marys were also out of this world! A special shout out to Billy Bowden whose “garbage omelets” put Bobby Flay to shame! If you happened to miss Sunday’s brunch, worry not.
Things went so well that the VFW is doing it again with another brunch presently scheduled for Sunday, May 17th. Sadly, two of our neighbors and VFW auxiliary members were unable to attend the brunch. Lauren and Bob Prokopowicz both suffered tremendous personal losses this past week. Lauren lost her mother after a long illness while her husband Rob had to deal with the unexpected passing of his sister. Words cannot express the sadness we feel for their losses but the collective thoughts of their friends and neighbors in Broad Channel are with them in this time of sorrow in the hope that they may both find comfort in the loving memories of their lost family members. As you are strolling about town this week, keep an eye out for the brand new Rockaway Times news rack on the sidewalk outside of the Broad Channel All American Channel Market. Fear of Falling? Tired of that Walker or Cane? Walk Too Slow?
RAA Project: Just About Ready To Print By Michael Leboff
The Rockaway Artists Alliance is making serious headway in their effort to build the peninsula’s firstever fine art print shop. After months of hard work and fundraising, the project, which has been spearheaded by RAA mainstay Esther Grillo, is nearing completion. Rockaway residents should be familiar with Grillo’s work. Her wave murals adorn the iconic bus shelters on Shore Front Parkway and she also created the sculpture outside of Beach Channel High School. In order to fund the project, the RAA received $1,500 from the Museum of Modern Art and has received private donations, as well. However, the grunt of the work has been carried out by volunteers. “Everything is being done by volunteers,” Grillo said. “We all wanted to help build something special.” Printmaking is an art form where the artist creates prints by transferring ink from a mold or a prepared screen to a sheet of paper or other material. Common types of print materials include metal plates, copper, zinc, wood or silkscreens.
“There are many artists who love printmaking,” Grillo explained during a tour of the new shop. “But they have no place to continue this love.” According to Grillo, who serves as the Chair of the RAA’s Print Shop Committee, art schools have fine art print shops but they require prerequisites to practice. Additionally, many print shops have closed over the past few years, leaving many hobbyists without a place to hone their skills. The Rockaway Artists Alliance Fine Art Print Shop will offer classes in fine art printmaking for artists of all levels. They are hoping to hold evening classes, silkscreen classes and other demos as well. They will also give members access to the shop on the weekends. Although they expect to be done soon, there is no exact timetable for the RAA Fine Art Print Shop’s opening. They are still seeking donations of money and equipment including print plates, ink rollers, and other materials. For more information you can visit their website at rockawayartistsalliance.org.

The Great One’s Dad Dear Editor: (Regarding the Beef Chip column about Wayne Gretzky never forgetting). Great story on Wayne, though as a fellow Canadian, I’m not surprised. Do you know that Wayne’s dad Walter (Wally to everyone) still lives in the same house he bought when he got married (!) and not in some gated community. The best part of this story is that Wally has more of Wayne’s memorabilia in that house than the Hockey Hall of Fame does, and if he’s around the house, he’ll take you through the basement and show you. He does this for complete strangers all the time (check youtube). There is millions of dollars of memorabilia on display and if you’re in Brantford, check it out! Rob V.
SHOP LOCAL Dear Editor: The Rockaway Beach Merchants Association and The Beach 116th Street Partnership, under the direction of Executive Director Linda Humphrey, should discuss giving Local Residents a discount at their stores at their next meeting. This would promote more shopping locally by residents, and at the same time increase busi-
ness for the merchants. Each Store could create their own discount. Sounds Good to me... How About you?? Liz Smith of The Blue Bungalow has been giving discounts for years. Let’s have other merchants get on board with this. You can advertise your discounts in the Rockaway Times. Bill Dickesheid
Dear Editor, I appreciate all that Comptroller Stringer says. He hits all the right notes. He sings all the right songs. But so too did Bill de Blasio and so many more before him. It should be no surprise that Scott Stringer is running for mayor (announcement to follow) and after “one Term Bill” he will probably be a good mayor. But how do we hold him accountable to his promises? That’s the problem with politics. The mark of a truly concerned citizen running for public office is when he/she loses, they actually stick around to follow up on their promises. Most just disappear until the next campaign. The only people that have stuck with us post defeat seem to be Lew Simon and Anthony Weiner (and this coming from a Conservative Republican). You know why we are always left with the short end of the stick? It’s because we fall for their “promises.” Let me paint you a picture: Flight 587 had crashed into Rock-

away about 5 hours earlier. I was going up the steps to my sister’s house to check on conditions when I hear noises from down the block. What do I see? Hillary Clinton is walking down the block waving to the left and to the right. Cameras are recording her every move. However, there are no
people on the street. Just myself and a friend on my sisters’ steps and an entourage of reporters and cameras focused on Mrs. Clinton. And she is waving to where there are no people. Then she sees us and makes a beeline for my sister’s house. I shake my head, turn the key, and we go in leaving Mrs. Clinton with her posse. That night the “news” showed our former first lady waving to the “crowds” as she made her presence known at this tragedy. She seemed not to care of the unfortunate deceased or the shocked neighborhood, but only to make

points before the camera. If Mrs. Clinton loses her bid to be our next President do you think we can count on her to continue her “support” for Rockaway? Politicians…they are not here when we need them, only when they need us. And when we need them, they’re too busy with “other matters”. But wait! Meet The Met$ Dear Editor: I have been a Met fan since the team was founded in 1962. My parents came from Brooklyn and were Dodger fans, therefore NL fans. As a kid I only left the beach in summertime to watch the Mets -back then almost all baseball games were day games on local TV. In the 80’s and 90’s I had mini plans and took my kids to many games. Unfortunately the NY teams have decided to screw their fans. Last year my wife and I went to 1 Met game. 2 hot dogs, 2 fries, one beer and 1 soda cost $42. A 16 oz beer in the stands was $10. I understand that Yankee Stadium prices are higher. At these prices the teams have excluded families and will get mostly corporate clients. It is most unfortunate that local major league teams have decided to host their big bucks clients at the expense of their real fans. Is anyone surprised? Peter Galvin
A Friend Remembered Dear Editor: (On the passing of Jack Friedman, the executive director of the Queens Chamber of Commerce) Jack was a friend not only RDRC but to the Rockaways, always reminding elected officials, City and State agencies that Rockaway was too important to be ignored from an economic, business and quality of life standpoint. Jack’s commitment to the Rockaways was never more evident than during Sandy, when he worked to identify resources - supplies, services and volunteers through the Queens Chambers’ significant member-

Many didn’t know of this or the fact that he was able to get Resorts to serve as a staging area for tons of supplies designated for the Rockaways, even as he battled his own chronic health issues. Invest In Your Lungs Dear Editor: I fooled myself into quitting smoking (easy to do when you’re an idiot). I spent $77 a week on smokes. I needed extra cash. I gave myself a p/t job that I did NOT have to show up for (quitting smoking). The ONLY stipulation was that I wasn’t allowed to smoke on the job. I paid myself $77 a week. Pay yourself to quit smoking, a great investment! You can do this! Let greed do all the work for you! Matt Whalen

Special Athletes Not Deterred
The Hartigan Hammer Dear Editor: The Staten Island $500 million project will be funded through 65 percent of federal money (or $355 million). The balance of $135 million will be funded by the City and State. Let’s send our politicians to Staten Island for internships so they can learn how to get something done. Just think about it-our politicians can take the free ferry to Staten Island for their internships. I feel bad for the residents of Rockaway especially from 88th Street to 108th Street if another storm hits the area. The water will wash right through the sand dunes but Staten Island will have the protection of a 20-29ft sea wall. I guess the politicians from Staten Island have a better relationship with Chuck Schumer. Rockaway gets a sand dune and Staten Island will get a sea wall. I wonder why Staten Island did not have wait for another new study from the Army Corps of Engineers to get it done? Answer-- it is called having more effective politicians. Joe Hartigan
On Friday February 20, 2015 the temperature was minus Five Frigid degrees. However, this did not deter the Saint Camillus Special Olympians. They went tubing and spinning downhill at Windham Mountain. Pizza was their treat after enduring the freeze. Saturday, February 21, was a little warmer, probably 15 above, but very windy and snowing. Again, our athletes were fearless. They skied and had fun all afternoon. Father Peter Rayder celebrated mass for our group in the dining
room of Windham Mountain Inn. A delicious hot buffet supper was enjoyed by all. If you think our athletes were tired after the day’s activities, think again. The music started and the dancing began. Flip Mullen was MC for the evening and gave out medals to all the Olympians and all who skied. Behind the scenes, but more importantly, was Rita Mullen. She planned and executed each aspect of our party. Christine Parchment arranged the entire weekend for over 100 people in every detail.

These days, there’s no reason why you can’t be both tech-savvy and an environmentalist. More gadgets and technical appliances are trending green, and this Earth Day is the perfect time to learn how you can adopt some of these innovations in your life. To reduce your family’s overall impact on the environment, consider this lineup of eco-friendly technologies: Green Apps There are hundreds of apps designed to help you make earthfriendly lifestyle changes -- from PaperKarma, an app which helps you stop the flow of junk mail to your home, to the Green Gumshoe, which facilitates the reporting of environmental incidents to the correct authorities. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is a good resource for finding and locating the best green apps. What’s more, they offer developer tools for those wishing to make their own green apps using EPA data. Lamp-Free Projector Technology If your home, school or business could use a green makeover, an easy place to start is by replacing an outdated projector with something more energy efficient. For example, Casio’s Lamp-Free Projectors consume 1/3
less power per unit than traditional lamp-based projectors by using a Laser & LED Hybrid Light Source. Guided by Intelligent Brightness Control, you can conserve power up to 50 percent because the projectors automatically adjust brightness to suit the room. For every 6,000 hours of use, that amounts to approximately $800 dollars saved compared to a traditional lamp-based projector. In addition, Casio’s portfolio of projectors, including its SLIM series, takes environmental consciousness a step further by eliminating harmful mercury bulbs from the equation. Solar Chargers You may rely on multiple devices to get you through the day, from your mobile phone to your tablet to your laptop. It’s easy to keep these items running without draining electricity, even when you’re on the go. Solar chargers come in all shapes and sizes these days -- clam shell, tree branches, foldable -- you can even buy a backpack or laptop case equipped with a solar panel. With so many manufacturers greening their offerings, consider taking stock of your tech gear this Earth Day and making eco-friendly swaps. (StatePoint)

Community Board 14 Recap By Michael Leboff
Queens Community Board 14 held its monthly meeting on Tuesday night to discuss a variety of matters including transportation, the D Piper Inn’s BSA application, and the upcoming Army Corps of Engineers meeting. Despite several invitations by the Community Board to the Army Corps to attend a community board meeting, they will not go before the board. “You haven’t heard us say, in the past couple months, that we think Army Corps is coming next month,” Community Board Chair Dolores Orr said in her opening remarks. “They kept making that promise. They are not coming, at all, to Community Board 14.” Instead of meeting with Community Board 14, the Army Corps has made the decision that they’re going to hold a standalone event for the Rockaway Reformulation Study on Wednesday, April 22nd at the Knights of Columbus. The event will not be a meeting where they give a presentation and hold a question and answer or a quorum with the community, rather the Army Corps will set up several stations where attendees can go from table to table in order to gather information about the study. “It won’t be the type of public forum that we are comfortable with,” Orr concluded. Despite Orr’s skepticism, Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder noted the importance of the meeting with the Army Corps. “If there is one meeting that every single person on this peninsula needs to show up to, that’s on April 22nd when the Army Corps of Engineers will finally lay out some of the ideas for our longterm safety,” Goldfeder said. “We are still in talks with them and are trying to make sure there is as much vocal input as possible.” Following the Army Corps of Engineer discussion, Al Moore, the co-chair of the district’s Land Use and Housing Committee, presented to the board regarding the D Piper Inn Hotel’s application to reestablish an eating and drinking

space on the first floor of the building. Due to damage caused by Superstorm Sandy, the hotel had to make upgrades, meaning they had to file for a variance to serve food and drink as they did throughout their entire history. The 12 room hotel has a long history on the peninsula. It was established in 1907 and has been serving the community ever since. During the chaos following Sandy, owner Peter Duffy opened the hotel to house volunteers. After a brief presentation from a representative from Sheldon Lobel PC, who represents the D Piper Inn, the Community Board voted overwhelmingly in favor of supporting the hotel’s BSA application for the variance. Community Board 14’s Transportation Committee also gave an update on Tuesday night. At the committee’s last meeting, members from Move NY offered information about initiatives the group is seeking to undertake in New York City. Move NY is a grassroots campaign that seeks to build support for a transportation plan for New York. Their mission is to bring faster, safer transportation to New Yorkers. Some of their plans include “Time of Day” toll pricing, where the price of tolls would fluctuate during peak and off peak travel times. Another initiative seeks to set higher toll prices in areas where transit options are most available and lower prices where mass transit is less available. The committee asked for the group to make a more specific presentation at a future Community Board meeting. Despite the lack of specifics in the presentation, Transportation Committee co-chair Marty Ingram was pleased that the group realizes that Rockaway is underserved and over tolled. Prior to the committee reports, Orr brought to the attention that the Knights of Columbus is looking to raise money for a handicap bathroom. She also thanked the K of C for making their hall available for Community Board 14 and other community groups.

Lola!
Ready to Shine on Beach 116th Street By Katie McFadden
Buckle in, it’s going to be a fun summer. Lola Star is setting up shop on Beach 116th Street. Originally from Detroit, Lola comes with a name she’s made for herself. Known around Brooklyn for her boutique shops, Coney Island activism and roller-disco parties, she’s now bringing her vibrant personality and talents to Rockaway. She’ll be opening a store at 174 Beach 116th street in early May. Although the shop is still being worked on, renderings of the rainbow-designed storefront show that something unique is about to come to the busy commercial strip, and inside, customers will find items that you can’t find anywhere else in Rockaway. Lola creates her own merchandise in her studio in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, such as Rockaway apparel, mugs and other goodies. Her store will also feature glittering accessories, technicolored hula hoops, beach gear, roller skates and “magical mermaid treasures,” according to her press release. Mark Mina, executive board member of the 116th Street Partnership said he is “thrilled to have Lola come to 116th. She participated in the Fall Festival and already has a feel for the neighborhood. I’m grateful she was able to find a space on the block. It’s going to be great.” While young at heart, the bright-eyed, redhead is not a newbie to small business. She opened her first boutique shop on the Coney Island Boardwalk 15 years ago. Due to its success, she soon after opened a second boutique store in the Stillwell Ave subway station. Now she’s coming to Rockaway. Having to deal with the effects of Hurricane Sandy in Coney Island, Lola shares the common thread of knowing what it takes to recover from a natural disaster and in a way, Sandy connected her to Rockaway. Lola says she had come to Rockaway to go to the beach before, but the idea of opening up Rockaway shop was instilled in her mind by Rockaway Beach resident, Jeanette Nigro. Nigro, who works with the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, helped Lola obtain an emergency loan following Sandy, so that she could rebuild her Brooklyn shop. As a big fan of her work, Nigro encouraged Lola to bring her talents to Rockaway. “I wasn’t really thinking about it, because of everything going on with Sandy, but it was her encouragement that kept the idea in my
head,” Lola said. When the space opened up on Beach 116th Street, Nigro, who is good friends with the former owner, let Lola know about the Rockaway opening and convinced her to go for it. “If my store hadn’t been destroyed in Sandy, I never would have met Jeanette and I would have never known about this store,” Lola said. “It was like fate. Good things can happen out of misfortune. You never know why something is happening, but there’s usually a positive reason behind it.” Lola looked at other Rockaway locations, but settled on Beach 116th in the hopes of es-
tablishing her shop as a year-round stop. “I feel like there’s other retail around there and I think my store will make it more of a destination. I think it will bring more people out to 116th,” she said. Although her shop will be a new addition, Lola Star has slowly been introducing herself to Rockaway over the past year. In addition to the Fall Festival, she also opened a small pop-up shop at Uncle Louie G’s near Beach 92nd Street, where her merchandise was sold in late fall and early winter. Lola is also ready to help beyond 116th Street. Lola Star is one of the official sponsors of Taste of Rockaway Beach on April 25. She is providing her t-shirt services to create an official shirt for the event and proceeds from shirt sales will benefit the HEART Organization, which hosts Taste of Rockaway Beach each winter and spring. Lola has even bigger plans for the community in the future. Her store won’t just be a place to buy merchandise. “In addition to having the store, a big part of my business is having these events and parties as ways to bring the community together,” Lola said. She plans to hold shopping parties like her Pin Up Party, showgirl makeup classes, t-shirt bedazzling classes, sunset yoga on the beach, Sunday morning hula hooping beach parties and more. As the Queen of Roller Disco, Lola is also looking to bring retro skating to Rockaway. Every Friday, she hosts a Dreamland Roller Disco Party in Prospect Park, which has become a wildly successful event featuring themed costumes, retro DJ tunes, performances by LED hula hoopers, contests and more. “The roller disco parties are pure magic. It brings out a great crowd. The energy is amazing. It seems so perfect to bring that to Rockaway. What would be better than roller disco by the beach, skating around at sunset?” Lola said. All she needs is a location. She’s already having discussions with the Parks Department about using the 108th hockey rink, once renContinued on page 18

Youth Job Fair on Friday There is a youth specific job fair coming to Far Rockaway this week. The Teen Job Fair & Career Expo will take place this Friday, April 17, at the community center at 426 Beach 40th Street. The job fair, which specifically targets youth from ages 14 to 24, will begin at 2 pm and last until 6 pm. The fair will host free resume and interview preparation workshops and individuals will also
have the opportunity to speak with representatives from various companies that are looking to hire. The Teen Job Fair & Career Expo was started three years ago by Manny Fiallo, who is the program coordinator for the Child Center of New York and a board member of the 101st Precinct Community Council in Far Rockaway. Roughly 200 people, from all five boroughs, are expected to participate in the job fair.
Parks Names Portia Administrator Portia Cook-Dyrenforth has been named the Rockaway Administrator by the NYC Department of Parks, replacing Jill Weber, who retired after a long stint in Rockaway, in late 2014. She started the Save Coney Island Organization to preserve the historic aspect of the area and fight against developers who wanted to build condos in the Amusement District of Coney Island. Her organization won. She also became very active in leading the relief effort to rebuild Coney Island after Sandy. Lola says she plans bring a

lot to Rockaway as well. “What I learned as an activist in Coney Island is how important the idea of community is to me. It would be impossible for me to care about a community and have a business there without being involved. I think I have a lot to contribute as far as making Rockaway an even more fabulous place,” she said. Although an exact date hasn’t been set, Lola Star plans to open her Rockaway shop in early May. She will hold a grand opening party featuring performers, a DJ, beer and food at her shop.

Creativity Flourishes at PS 114 For the past few weeks we’ve able to publish some creative works by the stellar students of writing instructor, Joan Diehl. Enjoy! A ‘’REEL’’ GREAT DAY By Josie Anaya Grabbing the rod and tackle, we were off just like that. We pulled up to the beach, toes immersed in the sand. Dad took my hand and led the way. Finally, we chose a spot just a foot from the tumbling waves. While Dad moved closer to the ocean, I stayed behind and galloped into the sunset like a happy pony. I just needed a better look at the pink sky. Twirling and swirling around on the beach as if it were a real stage made me fall into a dance with the sunset. Suddenly, Dad called, ‘’Josie, would you like to do the honors and reel the fish in!’’ I gulped in fright and blurted out, ‘’Sure!’’ without even thinking at all. Frightening thoughts of dropping the rod in the sea’s belly, or being pulled into the ocean by the fish’s strength gave me a sharp pain in my stomach, the kind that you get when you eat too many sweets before dinner.
‘’Maybe I’ll bring up a shoe instead off a fish, or the fish will squirm off the hook without me even knowing,’’ I thought. But then I saw Dad smile, a smile that went from ear to ear. His smile made me feel that I had to reel that fish in, to make him proud. Pulling with all my might, I thought I wasn’t going to do it. Then, I yanked that rod hard and almost tripped on a seashell behind me. I reeled again and kept tugging, not choosing to give up at all. The fishing line continued to race away from me as the fish tried to tug himself free. Finally, I pulled so hard that the oversized fish was being towed out of the ocean. Reeling some more, the fish was now dangling on the hook. About twenty inches wide, it seemed to be a Striped Bass, my Dad’s favorite. His scales were gleaming silver and black and had horizontal stripes going across. They lit up as I held him to the sunset. His eyes sparkled like diamonds and stared at me. As my father and I coaxed the fish back into the ocean, I was so joyous because I saw my father’s face, which was filled with pride and bliss.
DISAPPOINTMENT By Maisie Courtney The first eight years of my life were spent in a butterfly-filled garden where the sky was always blue. However, on this day, the thorns grew thicker than the roses, and rain clouds blocked the sun for me. It was a hot and sticky day in July, I stepped into the horse-registration area nervously. Searching the room, I looked around for the staff members. Out of nowhere, a cat the color of a silver pot, jumped from a greasy booth. I screeched louder than a car with bad breaks. So loud, in fact, a beastly woman scurried in and wailed in a startled voice: “What’s Wrong!?!” “Nothings the matter”, I assured her. She guided me to the stables, and with a whistle, all of the horses stood at attention. “Follow me.” She snapped. “Your riding teacher will be here any minute.”
ProHealth Excellence Urgent Care Convenience
As soon as she left, I skipped up and down the aisles, reading the plaques on every stableLittle Cloud, Big Cloud, Unicorn Jr., Sparkle Power. “Very creative names for horses” I muttered. Just then, a ray of sunshine seemed to shine across a single stable and all of the other horses disappeared. “Prince”, I whispered. This glorious mudbrown stallion had a long cream soda colored mane. But, it was his short, melodic whiney that won my heart. Also, he seemed taller and more muscular than the other horses. Then when I stepped closer, Prince nuzzled me on the cheek. Yanked out of my thoughts by heavy footsteps, a man demanded, “What horse would you like?” I pointed hopefully at Prince. “Oh, no. You can only choose from the ponies,” he muttered. And that’s how I learned the meaning of disappointment.

Fire & Water
Local Brings Surf and Firefighting History to Life in New Film never been publicly viewed. “Fire and Water” follows the story of Eichin as a young man, surfing the Banzai pipeline in Hawaii, his journey into becoming a New York firefighter, and how he passed his legacy on to his own sons and others in the community, helping to contribute to the brotherhood of firefighter surfers that are a common thread in beach communities across the country today. “I don’t think anybody can become a firefighter. Because surfing is so ingrained in the people of Rockaway, Long Beach and Montauk, you’ll find hundreds of firefighters who are all surfers. They started surfing as kids, worked as lifeguards and went on to take the test and became firefighters. It’s part of their family,” Brookins said. “Surfing is changing in New York in its own way and firefighting has a lot to do with that. If you’re living on a coastal environment, it’s a natural path for surfers to become firefighters and pass that on.” The film incorporates Eichin’s vintage surf footage, which would leave any non-surfer in awe and
any surfer envious, as well as modern-day footage shot by Brookins in New York, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and California. It features more than a dozen interviews from surfers or those connected to the surf community such as Rob Machado, Kassia Meador, Rochelle Ballard, Rusty Miller and more local guys such as Eric and Randy Eichin, Brian Walsh, Lou Romas, Mikey Detemple, Casey Skudin and more. The interviews, footage and background music tell the story of a brotherhood of people who brave the elements of fire and water, as both firefighters and surfers in New York. While making the movie, Brookins has braved some unexpected elements as well, which has led to some production delays. In the summer of 2011, Brookins received news that no one should hear. “Before I went to film in Hawaii, I wasn’t feeling right and I
Filming On The Beach had some bumps in my throat. I went to have it checked and they did a biopsy,” Brookins said. When he returned from Hawaii, he got the results. “You have cancer,” the doctors told him. Brookins underwent surgery and radiation treatments for his thyroid cancer and by the summer of 2012, he was told he was in the clear. “I met with Continued on page 26

By Katie McFadden Director, filmmaker and Rockaway Beach resident, Thomas Brookins, is putting the final touches on his latest film that will give people a deeper view of New York surfing and firefighting history. For the majority, the last thing people think about when they think of New York is surfing and very few know the ties between surfing and firefighting, unless of course, you grew up in a beach community like Rockaway. Wanting to shed some light on this, Brookins started filming “Fire and Water” in 2011. Originally wanting to make a short 20-minute film about some of his surfer buddies who also happen to be firefighters, the project grew into something much bigger than expected when Brookins met legendary Long Island surfer and firefighter, Don Eichin who unveiled a treasure chest of old surfing clips from his days of surfing with friends in Hawaii in the late 1950’s and early ‘60s. Eichin gave Brookins free reign to use the footage, which has

My wife works so hard. I don’t know how she did it. We came out of that feeling like kings of the world,” Brookins said. Then Sandy happened. The entire basement of the house they had just bought a year previously, was destroyed. “As brutal as Sandy was, it was a great diversion from thinking of mortality,” Brookins said. However, between Sandy and his illness, Brookins’ film production slowed down. “That really threw a wrench into the machine. Between cancer and Sandy, it took up so much of my time, that I could only work on little bits at a time, making connections and setting up interviews on my cell phone,”
the doctors and they asked me, ‘do you know how lucky you are to be sitting across from us? We’ve only seen a few cases like yours and you’re a very lucky man to be here.” “That was awesome. I couldn’t be happier. I came back thinking I beat cancer at a time that was very difficult. My wife, Jessica and I, just bought our house in Rockaway and had a one-year-old son when I was diagnosed. It’s not easy when you’re facing your own mortality and you’re looking at your child and wife and you’re supposed to be this healthy, energetic surfer.

Brookins said. However, he says the movie was also a good way to keep his mind off of everything. “The movie was there for me. It was my tool to focus on something other than stress,” Brookins said. “When I put the shovel down at the end of the day, I’d pick up the phone and find people to film.” The film also took a financial hit. When starting the movie, Brookins held a successful Kickstarter campaign to raise more than $10,000 to support the film, but early travel expenses to film around the country depleted the funds and Brookins has paid out-of-pocket since, which has been a challenge on top of unexpected life events. Brookins is ready to put “Fire and Water” to bed. With just four more interviews left, to fill in some missing connections in the movie, he hopes to have it finished by May. “It’s been very hard. I’m very tired and I just want other people to finally see it. I want to see the looks on their faces when they see their town or state represented this way. I hope when people watch it, they enjoy it as much as I’ve enjoyed making it.” Brookins says he hopes his movie will change the way people view New York. “I want people to look at New York differently and the beaches here differently. We need the city to realize what we have here. We have this natural environment that should be treated as any beach culture outside of New York. The city keeps dumping garbage here instead of taking advantage of this natural environment. I’m hoping my movie will help open the

The Brookins family minds to the beach culture in New York State and how important it is to the rest of the world,” he said. Brookins is a self-taught filmmaker and director, but his professionally produced work shows that he’s no amateur. His previous film, “Shadows of the Same Sun” earned him a New York International Film Festival award for Best New Director in 2010. Another film he contributed to, “Living for 32” was shortlisted for an Academy Award. His talents are sure to impress when “Fire and Water” is finally released. “Fire and Water is the movie that I’ve always wanted to make,” Brookins said. Facts You Probably Don’t Need As for the facts below, we don’t verify. They might not be facts at all but the Internet says they are! *** The earliest known use of the phrase April Fool dates back to 1693. April begins on the same day of the week as July every single year. Tax Day, too, The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912. Fire typically spreads uphill more quickly than downhill. This is because temperature affects the rate of combustion. The region above a fire tends to be much hotter than the area below it, plus it may have a better supply of fresh air. The hardest chemical in your body is your tooth enamel. By Artie Wallace With the weather warming coming up it’s time to start those outside projects. This week we will cover cleaning the deck. Power washing a deck may look easy, but I don’t recommend it for the average home owner. Power washers have a lot of pressure and without proper experience it is easy to splinter decks and cause gouges in the wood as well as damage deck paint. Although for a more general cleaning of the deck there is something to help the everyday home owner. Most local hardware stores will carry a high pressure power washing nozzle that attaches to your garden hose. Thought this will not give you the deep cleaning that a power washer will give, it is a great substitute for keeping your deck clean between power washings. You will also need a gallon of deck power washing cleaner. Do not use regular household soaps. 1- Mix in a bucket the cleaner with water. Be sure to read the mixing instructions on the cleaner, they do not all require the same mixture. 2- Using a brush or a broom

3- Rinse thoroughly using the power washing nozzle. Start rinsing with the tip of the power washing nozzle about a foot away from the deck. Slowly move it closer till you get to about 6 inches from the deck (may be a little further for older decks). If paint starts lifting or wood starts to splinter, move away an inch or so at a time till lifting/splintering stops. 4- Repeat if needed. Note that this is a good way to maintain your deck between power washings, it is recommended you have your deck power washed at least once every 2 years (more if needed). If you are planning to paint your deck, then you should have the deck power washed, the above method will not properly prepare the deck for painting. Next weeks topic will be dealing with those clogged drains. If you have an idea for future projects, email me at rocktimesdiy@gmail.com

the Rockaway Beach municipal parking lot on April 24th. The Command Centers bring trained DFS specialists into communities around the state to provide homeowners, renters and business owners with one-on-one assistance. Specialists can answer questions about coverage and help policyholders resolve issues with insurers. According to DFS, the state agency and its Insurance Division supervise all insurance companies that do business in New York State, overseeing some 1,700 companies with assets exceeding $4.2 trillion. Goldfeder recently drafted new legislation to create the New York Flood Insurance Association (NYFIA). This new state body would help pool flood insurance risks and lower premiums for families struggling with rising rates, creating an alternative to the broken National Flood Insurance Program administered by FEMA. “I’m pleased to help make this service available so that families can get the information they need, Goldfeder said. “I encourage anyone with a question or concern about their insurance policy to come down and speak to a specialist.

Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder has announced that he has arranged upcoming visits by the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) Mobile Command Center (MCC) in Rockaway Beach and Howard Beach to offer information and assistance to families. “Insurance companies added insult to injury for so many of our families devastated by Sandy. Our community faced complicated legal language and pushback from unscrupulous insurers denying assistance we desperately needed, Goldfeder said. “By bringing these Mobile Command Centers to the community, the Department of Financial Services under Superintendent Lawsky is once again proving to be great advocate and resource for policyholders facing insurance-related issues. Goldfeder contacted DFS following numerous complaints from local families dealing with their flood and homeowners insurance providers. The state agency responded by offering to bring their Mobile Command Centers to communities in southern Queens and Rockaway still reeling from Sandy. The units will be deployed from 10 am to 6 pm at Waldbaums in Howard Beach on April 17th and

Goldfeder Looks To Improve Far Rock Traffic Safety By Sheneca Sharpe
Don’t look now, or better, look both ways, Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder is working to make Far Rockaway safer for drivers and pedestrians alike. Goldfeder met with Queens Department of Transportation Commissioner Jeff Lynch about street safety in Far Rockaway. Goldfeder walked with Lynch to inspect certain intersections and asked about the agency’s traffic initiatives. In particular, the areas that they considered included Brookhaven Avenue, Plainview Avenue, Seagirt Boulevard, and Beach 17th.
The area that was on top of the list was an intersection on Brookhaven Avenue because there is no crosswalk in place for students to cross safely. Parents have contacted Goldfeder’s office about this because they see it as a dangerous spot to cross made even more so because there are no street markings. Being near a school, parents want to have the best safety precautions in place for their children and a crosswalk would help, they insist. Goldfeder and Lynch also discussed intersections where traffic lights would increase safety.

Rockaway Park High School: Haven for the LGBT Community By Sheneca Sharpe
Times are changing. The LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community is becoming the new norm for Rockaway Park High School. More people are coming out, especially in the past two years. Rockaway Park understands that times are changing and the new generation is starting to find themselves and embrace who they truly are. With these changes, Rockaway Park is making it more comfortable for students to find their place, focus on their studies, and not worry about prejudice of any kind. “The norm today is that people are more open about their sexuality because they don’t need to hide who they are anymore” said Symonea Thomas, a Rockaway Park senior student. Many LGBT people have difficulty feeling comfortable in their own skin. The Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) Club however, provides an outlet for people of any sexual orientation to share their voice and express their hopes, concerns and wishes. Before the GSA club, students had to live behind a mask and go through life concealing their feelings. The GSA club is a gateway for the LGBT community to stop living life in fear or shame and to own their identity with confidence and joy.
“The GSA club has become a safe haven to come share their story and share their diversity” expressed Dawn Ruiz, a foreign language teacher and GSA coordinator. With the help of the GSA club, people can understand their true identity without hesitation. They can relate to each other, gain support and recognize how their differences aren’t separating them from humankind. Not long ago, you could never imagine people saying, “I’m gay, deal with it.” Now with influential people coming out like Ellen Page and Anderson Cooper, young people are inspired to come out of their shells and be okay with who they are.. With less ignorance and more open mindedness, acceptance is becoming easier to attain and students can now focus on what truly matters such as grades, activities, and building strong friendships. The generation is evolving into a more diverse society that practices kindness and compassion. Rockaway Park is setting a great example for future generations. Using its small voice to scream a loud message, Rockaway Park High School says, “Be kind, be free, and love who you are!” (Sheneca Sharpe is a senior at Rockaway Park High School. She will be attending Buffalo State College in the fall.)

A Fall Down Memory Lane By A.Q. Bailey
I don’t know if it’s age or just my stupidity but I find myself backing up almost everything I’m watching on TV. I stare blankly at my big screen TV and realize after a while that I don’t know what the hell they are talking about. I got so used to backing everything up with the DVR that I guess I don’t pay too much attention the first go around. I think that I could back up the radio when I want. What’s happening to us or me? I can’t go anywhere more than 5 miles without putting in the address into my iPhone’s GPS. And if my wife is with me I have her put it in her phone too. Then get annoyed because they are both talking at the same time and it confuses me. The more I get smart devices the more I get stu-
pid. That’s just an excuse, I am getting more stupid. Just ask my wife she’ll tell you. And what’s up with the weather people? Is it me or do more people do this, wait for the five day forecast in the boxes to find out what’s going on the next couple of days. Weathermen go on and on trying to make the most mundane seem exciting. What do I care about the record high in 1963? Kinda feel sorry for them. Until they really get it wrong and don’t apologize. Not that I really care. I’ll just back up the DVR and pay more attention. All I can say is thank God they’re inventing smarter things as I get stupider. Or is it the reason I’m getting stupider. Is stupider even a word. I don’t know. It didn’t autocorrect so I guess I’m good. Hope you can relate.

From the Shore Garden Club: SPRING GARDENING The nursery catalogues have arrived with photos of beautiful flowers and luscious fruits and vegetables. The robins are chirping away and daffodils dare to raise their yellow heads. Despite the winter weather, it must be spring, time to plan and prepare for a colorful summer garden. The first step is always the soil. Rake the winter debris and if you are unsure what nutrients are missing you can take soil samples and have them tested. Two websites, testmyHOT & FRESH MAKES US BEST!
soil.brooklyn.edu and soilhealth. cals.cornell.edu will explain how to do this. Garden centers and hardware stores sell kits to test the PH of the soil, whether it is alkaline, neutral or acid. The garden soil should be replenished with compost, humus and manure. Top off the soil with new mulch to help smother weeds and retain moisture. Next, prune your shrubs. Cut out limbs damaged by the severe snow and ice storms experienced this past winter. Be cautious about large, high branches that may CAll AHEAd FOR FAST TAKE OUT

need professional pruning. Shrub roses can be cut back to 12 inches from the ground to encourage new growth and to cut out crossing stems that may cause disease in the plant. DON’T prune spring flowering shrubs or mophead hydrangeas (macrophylla). Start seeds indoors. You can plant tender annuals and vegetables seeds now. Poke a small hole in each cell of a clean egg carton and it makes a great bed to fill with potting soil mix. Moisten the soil until it is wet but not soggy. Read the seed packet carefully for information about seed depth, germination time and when they can be planted outdoors. Three seeds per cell is a good number. When plants develop three pairs of leaves it’s time to move them to a bigger container. Make sure the container has good drainage and fill it with potting soil, packed down lightly. You can start tomatoes, peppers or annual flowers indoors and be ready to plant in the garden when the soil has warmed up. By May, the garden centers will be filled with wonderful trees and plants. If you are looking for new ideas or some professional guidance, check out the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Plant sale, Wednes-
day, May 6th from 9 AM to 8PM and Thursday, May 7th from 9AM to Noon. On Wednesday there will be free curator talks during the day. The BBG website gives more detail. Here’s to a beautiful spring and a flower filled summer!

@
be bake sales, so all are invited to show their support, whether they want to dance or not. Those interested in attending can register at https://mightymikey.eventbrite.com/. If you cannot attend, but would like to help the Weinstein family, donations can be made at http://www.youcaring. com/medical-fundraiser/bemighty-like-mikey-/219565.

Play Ball! Rockaway Little League Season Begins The 2015 baseball and softball seasons kicked off last Saturday with the NY Premier Baseball Braves (Minor Boys) and the Bartoli Chiropractic Orioles (Major Girls) notching the year’s first victories. The full launch of the 2015 season will be on April 25 when the Tee Ball and Challenger divisions join in on the action. That is also the date of RLL’s annual Opening Day Festival. Tickets went on sale this week. The wind must have been blowing out last Saturday as all teams were swinging hot bats in the early action. The NY Premier Baseball Braves outhit the JAH Tax Prep Rockies 10-6 behind multiple-hit games from Matt Frost and Randy Koenig. Pitchers Brendan Byrne and John Leahy were in mid-season form for the Braves. Their battery mate, Ronan Mullally was strong behind the plate. In a bigger slugfest, the Bartoli Chiropractic Orioles outscored the St. John’s Hospital A’s in a frenetic affair. Batters Lizzie Meringolo, Vanessa Ciaccia, Kiera Price and Abbey Tubridy each had big days at the plate for Bartoli’s Birds. Meringolo hit for the cycle and got the game ball. Ciaccia went 4-for-4 with two walks. Tori
Mullen had five hits. Pitchers Alex Cook and Tori Mullen combined for the win. A’s hurler Chloe Murphy was solid despite the Orioles hot bats. She was backed by the strong swinging of Maeve Murnin and Diane Erhardt as well as the excellent fielding of Corinne Connolly. The Pee Wee Junior division also got started last weekend. The Denis O’Connor Rockies and the Breezy Point Limber Rangers had a fun-filled first game of the season. On Sunday, the Supreme Memorials A’s battled it out against the Robin Shapiro Realty Reds. After a two-hour, well-played game it ended in a tie (like all Pee Wee Junior games). Everyone enjoyed the nice weather and had a great time. Diamond Dust: This is Rockaway Little League’s 62nd season and the sixth year that they have held an Opening Day Festival. On April 25, there will be the parade of teams, speeches, food, ceremonial first pitches, rides and much more. The parade will begin at 9:00. Tickets ($15 each, max of $75 per nuclear family) for the food and rides are on sale now. Go to the RLL Continued on page 42
