Rockaway Times Wins 5 Awards In Statewide Competition Nearly four years in business and The Rockaway Times has taken home at least one award in the New York Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest every year so far. Not too shabby. But we outdid ourselves when the winners of the 2017 contest were announced last weekend at NYPA’s Spring Convention in Albany. The Rockaway Times won a total of five awards in the NYPA’s 2017 Better Newspaper Contest. NYPA’s 2018 Spring Convention, where journalists from across the state gather to learn new tips of the trade from guest speakers, and to hopefully be awarded for their endeavors of the previous calendar year, was held in Albany on Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14. Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts, The Rockaway Times staff could not attend
this year, but that didn’t stop the good news from flowing in over the weekend, and by Monday morning, we got the official word that The Rockaway Times won a whopping five awards this year (a personal record for us, having only won one award each previous year)! The Rockaway Times can proudly call ourselves First Place winners this year, after taking the top award for Best Spot News Photo. However, we have to give credit where it’s due. A big thanks and congratulations goes to reader, Ron McGrisken for his awesome shot of a whale feeding on some fish just off the beach. McGrisken submitted his photo to The Rockaway Times and we knew it was great enough to deserve some front-page glory on our 2017 Thanksgiving cover. And NYPA thought it was First

Place worthy. There were 58 photos submitted in this category, and McGrisken’s whale of a photo was chosen as number one out of 27 that were submitted to Division 2. Way to go, Ron! Congratulations are also in order for our own Managing Editor, Katie McFadden, who can officially call herself an
award-winning writer. McFadden has proven herself as a talented feature writer, having received an Honorable Mention in NYPA’s 2015 Contest for a feature story about her father. But she has moved on up, taking Second Place for Best Feature Story this year. In September 2017, McFadden wrote the story of locals George Johnson and John Carlin, who took lessons learned from Hurricane Sandy, down to Houston, Texas, after the area was hit by Hurricane Harvey, and selflessly dedicated their time to helping those who needed it most. “A strong story about people reaching out to those in need — unknown and far away,” the judges said in their comments about the story. The Feature Story category is the most-entered category in

Fadden came up with some witty headlines for our front pages, like “Houston, We Have A Solution; Ain’t Snow Stoppin’ Him Now; Erin Go Brrr!; What’s Up, Dock? And A Loss to Whale Over. “Big, loud claps for these headlines. These short puns are well timed and appropriate,” the judges said. The Rockaway Times earned second place out of 35 entries in this category. We knew how important the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Sandy would be to our readers, so we tried to put out all the stops to commemorate this community-changing event, and NYPA recognized it too. On the cover of the 5th Anniversary of Hurricane Sandy edition, we featured a photo by Teddy Ostrander, showing the after-effects of

Sandy on a beachfront home. NYPA judges said, “Very heart wrenching. Really shows what people went through. Very emotional,” about the cover and awarded The Rockaway Times Third Place for Best Special Section Cover in Division 2. There were 43 entries for Division 2 and 63 overall. Thank you to Teddy for this great shot that really helped us tell the story of Sandy, without needing words. The last award, we know isn’t worth boasting about, but it sure is funny and if we couldn’t laugh at ourselves, we’d be doing something wrong. Everyone makes mistakes, but we found this one good enough to own up to and enter in the Blooper of the Year category. And well, we came on top, or bottom, depending on how you look at it. The Rockaway Times won First Place for Blooper of the Year. Back in September 2017, in our “Things to Do” section, we ran an item about an upcoming Crab Boil Dinner event. Except “Crap”
Page 3 came out. Literally. We’re not sure how Crab turned into Crap, especially with the B and P being pretty far from each other on the keyboard, but we let our readers know about an upcoming Crap Boil Dinner in our calendar after it was missed in proofreading. We trust that our readers were smart enough to know they’d be dining on shellfish and not poo poo platters. We did hear that the event sold out, which was a win for the organizers, and the flub earned us Blooper of the Year, but a win is a win, right? We will admit that the competition wasn’t too stiff for this one, as we were the only newspaper brave enough to admit our flaws and submit and entry for the category. But politicians sometimes run unopposed and they still come on top, right? The Rockaway Times is very proud of our achievements this year and we hope to continue to put out quality work for years to come, with hopefully, less bloopers.

Tango My wife asked me what I wanted for dinner and then told me I was wrong. Kidding, honey, kidding! I may have just broken the number one rule in the house. You can’t say you were joking if it’s not funny. That’s a kid’s trick. They say stupid crap and then when you’re about to rip their heads off, they say they were joking. They are then reminded of rule Number One. Actually, most challenges in the land of marital bliss are a little more subtle than that
crack about dinner. Now, I’m no Henny Youngman — take my wife, please— but we were away with couples recently and some yuckity-yuck, heehaw marriage stuff broke out that probably breaks rule number one. But I can’t help but share. Oh, and don’t shoot the messenger. I’m just a reporter. Someone said marriage is the only institution where people ask, why are you breathing like that? Marriage makes you won-
Page 5
der: Why are forks and knives pointing up in the dishwasher? Again. Somebody trying to say something? Everyone seems to agree with the sentiment that marriage is just your spouse perpetually standing in front of the kitchen drawer or cabinet you need to open. Yeah, it’s kinda like who’s leading on the dance floor. Of course, with all this better or for worse conversation, I did my usual deep research and came across this marital battle of the wits: Marriage is essentially two people taking turns pushing down the top of the kitchen garbage so they don't have to take it out. The internet is always a source for more. Of course, husbands can be brave and say stuff online because they can remain anonymous. Did I say don’t shoot the messenger —because this one made me chuckle. Husband: Isn’t this great? Wife: Not really. The husband looking down from the top bunk: What’s
wrong? It wasn’t all men making such remarks. Someone quoted Cher, who is alleged to have said: “The trouble with some women is that they get all excited about nothing – and then marry him.” And then there’s this from good old Anonymous: “Some mornings, I wake up grouchy. And some mornings, I let him sleep.” Hey, it’s spring, people are get married now. I don’t want to scare off anybody about walking down the aisle, but this living together stuff is work (but worth it!). Just remember, don’t marry the person you think you can live with; marry only the one you think you can't live without. And that’s no joke.

Picture This! Photo Contest Entries To Get Showcased At Whit’s By Kami-Leigh Agard
Back in February, we opened the call, and the community answered by sending in their hottest shots for The Rockaway Times Third Annual Photo Contest. And according to contest organizer, John Cori, who disclosed that this year he will also be one of the judges, with more than 750 submissions received, it’s crystal clear that Rockaway’s hot shot photo takers stepped up their game for a chance to win not only the grand prize of 500 bucks, but also bragging rights of being the community’s bomb photographer. On Sunday, April 29, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the notoriously popular Whit’s End (97-02 Rockaway Beach Blvd), for the first time, the public will not only get the chance to check out the photos, but assist in the first round of judging. semifinal round. “This year, folks definitely stepped up their game. For example, for the first time, there were zero square shots, which most folks usually take with their smartphones. Also, there was a lot more creativity with animals and sunset shots. People even staged photos incorporating various media and body movements. For example, there is one staged on the beach with a mannequin’s head placed on some type of mound. Amazing! How’d they think of that? There is also one with a family on the beach spelling out the word, “LOVE.” I could go on about the range of photos we received clearly reflecting love for everything Rockaway. We have amazing photographers in our community, and it will be a huge challenge for the judges to select which go into the semi final,” Cori said. Don’t Let Spring Fever Cause Reckless Driving By Kami-Leigh Agard
What do you associate with spring? Besides (hopefully soon) warmer temperatures and blooming flowers — how about an uptick in traffic accidents? Well, according to a new Department of Transportation (DOT) report released last Thursday, April 12 by the Mayor’s Office, on weekends with warmer weather, drivers and motorcyclists tend to drive more recklessly, putting pedestrians at more risk. In response to this startling new data, Mayor Bill de Blasio has launched a new Vision Zero campaign, “Warm Weather Weekends” warning drivers to obey traffic laws or face the NYPD. The report states that April 29 of last year, was the second deadliest day of 2017. Highs had climbed to the 80s after a stretch of chilly weather, and on that day, four people were killed across the city and
more than 200 were injured in crashes, some of which involved speeding. This led the city to examine the correlation between weather records and crash data, in which it was found that drivers and motorcyclists drive more recklessly — putting pedestrians at more risk — on weekends with warmer weather. DOT then conducted a detailed analysis of traffic fatalities and severe injuries from 2007 to 2016, observing the rate of traffic deaths and serious injuries on warmer days in March through June. Comparing crash data to weather records, DOT studied days where temperatures were 60 degrees or higher, and uncovered the following clear correlative trends: - The average number of people killed or seriously injured (KSI) in traffic crashes on weekends starts to rise in March and peaks during June. In April, the weekend KSI rate is 28 percent higher than in
January/February. - The danger in the spring is most pronounced for motor vehicle occupants and motorcyclists: on warm weather Saturdays and Sundays in April, the KSI rate for drivers and car occupants is 41 percent higher than the winter weekend rate. For motorcyclists, the KSI danger on weekends rises by 88 percent. Data appears to show that higher KSI rates on warmer spring days are limited to Saturdays and Sundays. On weekdays, DOT data show that the average number of KSIs annually during April warm weather weekdays is only four percent higher than the January/February winter weekday rate. In response to this data, NYPD and DOT will initiate weekend season-specific efforts to deter reckless behavior to keep all New Yorkers safe. Officials will remind drivers that they should continue to obey the speed limit,
slow down, turn slowly and yield to pedestrians. Drivers should expect heightened enforcement, from NYPD Highway Patrol and local precincts, each of which now has its own speed detection equipment. In Rockaway, this is especially significant because of the influx of visitors thronging our beaches and boardwalk, desperately looking for parking — sometimes forgetting they have to beckon to pedestrians and of course, stop signs. “After this endless winter, spring cannot come soon enough. We know from past years’ experience that on warm weather weekends we see far too many tragedies on our roads, especially among motorists and motorcyclists,” DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg, said. “So our message to New Yorkers is simple: go out and play this spring — but if you are driving, please do so safely. You could save a life, including your own.”

Wounded Warrior Champs Up at CROM By Katie McFadden
“I’m just a guy,” Jason “Jay” Wheeler insists. But it’s difficult to not feel inspired by what’s been taking place at Rockaway’s own CROM Physical Culture lately. Wheeler, a veteran that lost use of his legs after a military training exercise in 2002, is taking CROM’s motto of “All It Takes is Heart” to a whole other level. Over the past two months, Wheeler has been testing his limits with the help of CROM’s Chris Romulo. From hoisting his entire bodyweight up ropes and above pull-up bars, to swinging a mace bar behind his shoulders with ease, to even showing off some wheelchair boxing skills, Wheeler is proving every week, that being a warrior doesn’t stop after being wounded. As sweat dripped down his head and he regained his breath after a tough Monday morning workout with Romulo, with his service dog, a German shepherd named Justice at his side, Wheeler took the time to share his incredible backstory with The Rockaway Times. Inspired by family members who fought for their country before him, Wheeler, originally from Concord, New Hampshire, joined the military at the time of the first Gulf War. He joined the Navy as a firefighter and served aboard the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy. In 1993, he was honorably discharged and he took a break from the military to work and attend college. But then 9/11 happened—and everything changed. As a veteran, seeing high school classmates become victims of those attacks, Wheeler couldn’t sit back and watch it happen. He decided to reenlist. After 9/11, Wheeler enlisted with the Airborne Infantry of the U.S. Army and he went off to train as a Recon Sniper for Recon Platoon 1st/509th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He was at the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk in Louisiana, participating in a training exercise when Wheeler’s life changed forever. “I was doing a training exercise, where we were simulating
a war scenario and I needed to jump out of a helicopter,” he said. After jumping from 1,500 feet, something went very wrong as a huge wind pocket rushed through, collapsing his parachute. Wheeler wound up hitting the tarmac. His right leg had rotated 32 degrees, his left hip had rotated 10 degrees, the L-4’s and L-5’s in his spine had shattered and he had hit his head, leaving him with a traumatic brain injury and cone and rod issues that left him legally blind. Wheeler lost feeling below the knee in both legs, had a vision range of only 200 feet by five feet wide, and suffered from PTSD, among other issues. Wheeler chose not to have his legs amputated below the knee until 2015, but his journey has been an uphill battle ever since his accident. Wanting to remain in the military, Wheeler chose not to have his legs amputated right away. “I wanted them fixed so I could stay in the game. I wanted to stay and look out for the younger guys,” he said. Wheeler stayed until he was medically discharged in 2004. Upon dealing with his injuries, he chose to use crutches to get around until he started using a wheelchair. Wheeler’s injuries also led to severe infections for years. In 2013, those infections led to extreme consequences. “I was in the ICU and my body crashed to 70/30. I flatlined. I died,” Wheeler said. After spending more than eight weeks in the hospital and needing four months to recover in bed, Wheeler wanted to do better, for himself, and in honor of his fallen soldiers, including the 22 that die each day due to suicide. “All I wanted to do was work out and never give up again,” he said. And he hasn’t stopped. Since his original injury, Wheeler has done things like become a certified scuba diver, helped youth and others deal with their own limitations, wheeled through the Boston Marathon route with a 50-pound rucksack, showcased strongman abilities in the Arnold Sports Festival and has actively participated in Wounded Warrior events, which brought him to Rockaway.

Through the Wounded Warrior program, Wheeler was introduced to locals like Flip Mullen, the Graybeards organization and JR and Jodi Richard of Breezy Point, who hosted Wheeler in their home for the duration of the weeklong program in which wounded soldiers get to experience the best of Rockaway water sports. And through time, those relationships lasted. In October 2017, after finding that Jodi Richard was in poor health, Wheeler came back to Breezy Point to provide moral support for JR. Jodi passed away at the end of December. However, while staying in Breezy and being there for JR, Wheeler wanted to maintain his active lifestyle. “I was looking for the toughest guy in town, and that happened to be Chris. I heard really good things about these guys and was impressed with their story of surviving Sandy and rebuilding, and their support for local police, firefighters and veterans. I saw how these guys were loved by so many, so I knew I’d find something great at CROM,” Wheeler said. Five days a week, with the help of The Graybeards, who transport Wheeler to and from his workouts, the veteran goes to work, putting his physical limits to the test, with Romulo as his coach. Since starting at CROM, Wheeler says he’s seen extreme improvements to his body including increasing his lung capacity, reducing injuries in his shoulders, strengthening his back and improving his overall mobility. In return, Romulo says he’s also learned from Wheeler dominating his unique, adaptive workouts. “I never joined the military. I made plans to but never followed through, so I jumped at the opportunity to help someone who has given up so much to keep our country safe. What
Jay has been doing here is ultra-inspiring. There are some days where I wake up with pain from training, and then I see Jay come in and do his thing, and I kick all those excuses to the side. I can only imagine our other members feel that motivation through seeing him. We all have those doubts and fears, but when you see people like Jay pushing through physical limitations, you start to think, maybe I don’t have it so bad. We can all look at him and wake up each morning and choose to give it our all.” Wheeler will be leaving New York at the end of the month to head to Texas, where he’ll be living, in the hopes of getting properly-fitting prosthetics, but he says Rockaway will always feel like home. “After the Wounded Warrior Project, I found a home within Rockaway and felt like I truly belonged. This area has been hit so hard between 9/11, the Flight 587 crash and Sandy. This community has been through hell and back, yet people like Sarah and Chris Romulo, the Richard family, the Graybeards and everyone else has showed me such love and support throughout. I love it here.” Before he leaves, Wheeler will show off some of what he’s learned at CROM. As part of CROM’s Fight Night, featuring youth and adult Muay Thai sparring events, on Saturday, April 21, Wheeler will give a pad-work demo with Romulo. This fundraiser, starting at 4 p.m., will help support CROM’s Youth Scholarship Fund.

Somehow, while crunched down pumping, his fat wad of twenties-earmarked to pay for his kids’ summer pool dues—slipped out of his pocket. Tires full, he headed over the bridge continuing on his day, oblivious to what he’d just left lying on the ground. “I didn’t realize it until about an hour later, Femiano said, when he dug into his pocket for the cash, and it was gone. After posting a frantic message on the Friends of Rockaway Beach Facebook page, pleading for anyone who may have found it to contact him, he began retracing his morning’s steps. Femiano quickly remembered the Mobil station, jumped back into his car and raced over to Beach 108th Street, but fueled by several doubtful replies on

Samaroo said. “It was a lot of money and I knew someone needed that money for rent, or tuition or something important, and I knew someone would be back for it. So, I brought it inside, showed the guys, and we waited,â€? Samaroo said. Was there a moment when the group thought to pocket the lost cash? Not even a consideration. “No way,â€? they all said, shaking their heads in unison. As Samaroo predicted, they didn’t have to wait too long. the money was returned. Total amount handed over: $1,040. “He hugged all of us,” Samaroo said. “He was so happy. We are honest people here. We run an honest business. My guys don’t ever take anything and people should know that when someone brings their car here, they can trust us.” Femiano attests to that gushing on the Friends of Rockaway Beach Facebook page, “I want to thank the good people at Mobil gas station on Beach Channel Drive and Rockaway Freeway. They found my money and at the same time they have restored my faith in humanity! I can honestly say these men are the most honest and honorable people I have ever met in my life! God bless them.” The guys at Mobil refused Femiano’s offers of a reward, “Absolutely not,” they said, settling for pizzas and sodas instead. A small consolation for such a large sum, but they insisted they wanted nothing in return for their good deed. The satisfaction of doing the right

On Tuesday, April 17, Kathy Holahan, President of The Shore Garden Club of Neponsit and Belle Harbor, made a visit to Ms. Bernstein's Pre-K classroom at West End Temple. She read “The Frightened Frog by Brenda Moore and Jean Ohlemann from the National Garden Club,Inc. Garden Clubs throughout the USA are participating in similar reading programs to promote gardening and environmental
awareness. After the story, they discussed that like the frog, everyone needs to live in a safe and clean environment to stay healthy. The class agreed one way they can help their neighborhood is not to litter their streets and beaches. The children will be able to borrow the book and backpack to take home to read with their families now that it is part of the classroom library.
DRIVE
The Graybeards will be sponsoring a FOOD DRIVE on Saturday, April 28 to help stock the various food pantries throughout the Rockaways. Many people are under the misconception that food pantries and soup kitchens only need our help during the cold weather months. Truth be told the need is just as great if not greater during the warmer months. Below is a list of suggested items that are needed. Just put your donations inside the blue bag and leave it outside your front door on Saturday April 28th before 10:00 AM. Someone will be by to pick it up. Please give what you can. So when you live at the beach and the sun finally appears, what do you do? If you are me, you head into Brooklyn to visit a cemetery where you know absolutely no one buried! Evergreen Cemetery actually sits on the boarder of Brooklyn and Queens and there are several ways to get there, but listening to my GPS, the mapped route was through Brooklyn. Now I live in Rockaway and
was. It seemed to me that this part of New York, this part of Brooklyn had been completely forgotten. When the city talks of rebuilding affordable housing, I wonder if they even know this is still part of the city. The Mayor should really get out of Park Slope and take a look. What was probably beautiful farmland when the Dutch, English and Germans lived here, gave way to row houses that eventually fell into disrepair and remain so. So what route did I take? Well I left Rockaway over Continued on page 21

the Marine Park Bridge down Flatbush to Utica to Kings Highway to Eastern Parkway to Bushwick Avenue and made a left into Evergreen. The neighborhoods changed from Marine Parkway to Flatlands to East Flatbush to Brownsville. The last few neighborhoods I was pretty unfamiliar with being a northern Brooklynite. The ride took all of twenty-six minutes from Rockaway, and when I entered the Bushwick Avenue entrance into Evergreen Cemetery I was transported into a totally different world, one that was probably at least three hundred years old! The temperature was touching almost seventy degrees, and the gemetery was totally empty, and I have to say I felt completely safe as I parked by the old Dutch House that acts as the office. I grabbed a map and began to hike through the grounds. The warm air brought out all the robin redbreasts and several other brightly colored birds.
While the cemetery is home to residents from the 1860s, several of those interred there were born in the late 1700s! And the monuments that people made to their loved ones are almost as stirring as the huge trees that are everywhere in Evergreen. I walked up to what I felt was the highest elevation and was treated to a great view of Manhattan. The area has rolling hills and slopes and gives a glimpse of what this beautiful place looked like in yesteryear.
MAKE SAVING YOUR
G AL
I felt angry with those that decided to make the surrounding areas into such an urban desert. Not that it cannot be revived like Williamsburg or Bushwick, but someone has to care. Affordable housing? Start here! Anyway, you know I like cemeteries, because they have trees and birds and residents that don’t argue with me. They are peaceful places to walk and collect your thoughts, but they also house the history of places. I have reported on the his-
tory of Greenwood Cemetery where parts of the Revolution were fought. But did you know that Evergreen is where the Rockaway Pass is? What’s the Rockaway Pass you say? Well, when General Washington was leading his ragtag army against the mighty British forces in the early days of the war, the battle for New York was key. General Howe of the British forces decided to pursue Washington but didn’t want to use the Jamaica Pass and tip off the pesky Americans, so he opted for the old Indian trail, known as the Rockaway Pass and used it to attack Washington. Spoiler alert: Washington got away through the cover of night from Brooklyn Heights across to Manhattan, where he stopped for a beer at Fraunces, and then hightailed it up to Harlem and across the Hudson where apparently he slept in a lot of houses. You know the rest. But this historic site is only twenty-six minutes from Rockaway. Wow! Who knew? Now, you do! See you out there.

Ever walk into a room and completely forget what you were doing? That's because going through a doorway creates an "event boundary" in
your mind, so your brain automatically starts filing away thoughts from your previous location to make room for the next one. About 70,000 years ago, humans may have come close to extinction. A study suggests that after the eruption of a super volcano in Indonesia called Toba, our numbers dropped to as low as 2,000 before slowly recovering. That would easily qualify as an endangered species today. Nike wanted to call their first shoe design 'Aztec," but Adidas already had a line called "Aztec Gold" and threatened to sue. So what did Nike do? They changes the name to 'Cortez" after the general responsible for the fall of the Aztec empire. In 2017, a bakery was banned from putting 'love' as an ingredient on its granola by the FDA. Facts by Sean McVeigh, factologist.

Users and Buyers Beware Anabolic steroids (i.e. testosterone) have been the most frequently abused appearance — and performance-enhancing drugs. Up until the 1980s, use of these drugs was mostly limited to athletes. However, since the 1980s, the drugs have become more widely used by men with the goal of improving appearance and building muscle mass. More recently, newer drugs called selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) have come into wider use and the use of anabolic steroids has decreased somewhat. SARMs are under development for use in aging and muscle-wasting diseases but, to date, none have been ap-
proved for these uses by the FDA. SARMs are available without a prescription through the internet, however, the extent of their use is unknown. Last year a study was published that investigated their use and availability. The investigation included chemical analysis of the products and comparison to the bottle labels. The investigative team purchased 210 products from 51 internet suppliers that advertised that their product contained a SARM. The suppliers were found using Google search engines on Chrome and Internet Explorer web browsers. Forty-four of the products contained the following compounds, none
of which is a SARM: Ostarine, Andarine, Testalone, Cardarine, Endurobol, and Stenabolic. In 41 percent of these 44 products, the amount of active compound listed on the label matched the chemical analysis. In 25 percent of the products, the compound listed on the label was found but in higher or lower amounts than that listed on the label and in 18 percent the compound listed on the label was not found. In the products that actually had a SARM listed on the label, only 52 percent were found to actually contain that compound and of that 52 percent, 59 percent had more or less of the compound than what the label stated. Almost 40 percent of the products were found to contain an unapproved drug that was not listed on the label, including substances like growth hormone-related drugs and other compounds banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). In five products purchased from one supplier, none contained any of the compounds listed on the label. In addition, nearly half of the products were sold as dietary supplements. The
FDA defines dietary supplements as products taken by mouth that contain a “dietary ingredient” like vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbs, and botanicals. None of the tested products met the definition of a dietary supplement. Many of these products are produced by small laboratories both inside and outside of the U.S. and, thanks to the internet, their products may be easily purchased from anywhere on the globe. The ease of website creation makes it possible for suppliers to create and remove websites as often as they may to stay one step ahead of law enforcement. Anyone taking these products who is an athlete that is subject to random drug testing, may be putting themselves in jeopardy for an inadvertent positive screen for banned substances. In short, anyone taking any of these “muscle-building” compounds might as well take them while wearing a blindfold because, essentially, you will have no idea what you are actually putting into your body. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com.

Miles and Miles To Go
Recently, I marked yet another milestone on my stoic journey through this existence we all call life — my 68th birthday. Yup, 68 long years since some long-forgotten physician, midwife, police officer or taxi driver (the exact circumstances of my birth were always, at best, both confusing and contradictory) patted me on my ass and said, "Okay kid, go get in the game.
Play hard, play fair, and don't get too many penalty flags and always remember, don't drink and no tattoos!" Coming from a strong Irish Catholic family, I always felt my birth certificate was nothing more than an apology from the Vatican Family Planning Center for the inordinately high percentage of failure of its rhythm method of birth control. When you stop to consider that we track our age in "years" with one year being the time it takes the earth to complete its orbit around our sun, things can start to get really scary when you start to add up all the frequent flyer miles collected as passengers aboard spaceship earth. The earth moves around the sun at approximately 67,000 mph racking up some 1.6 million miles of travel each day or 585 million miles annually. After 68 years on this grand merry-go-round of life, I figure I have amassed close to 40 bil-
lion miles of travel thus far. I mean that's 40 BILLION miles! C’mon, that's gotta count for something right? I should have enough miles banked that I should be able to have a helicopter land and pick me up in front of the Rock n Roll Deli and take me anywhere I damn well please, right? Unfortunately, every time I attempt to use my miles, I always encounter the problem of blackout dates or told that I failed to book my trip at least three years (or orbits) in advance! As luck (or the lack thereof ) would have it, this year the only actual travel plans I was able to make was to celebrate my 68th with my doctor after having hurt my back in bed with my beloved Grace. Wait for it...wait for it...now get your minds out of the gutter! While half asleep, I reached across to the night table to turn off some Netflix movie I was watching on my Amazon Fire TV and I managed to roll right off the bed and onto the floor with a crash that
almost caused our dog, who was sleeping on the floor at the bottom of the bed, to have heart failure. I have already sustained three lower back surgeries (two laminectomies + one revision) and apparently the warranty has expired on all of these procedures as the fall basically crippled me once again with a pain that had me calling all those poor sods who complain about water boarding, nothing more than a bunch of pampered wussies! As I await the doctor's review of my X-rays (and his inevitable "Perhaps we should follow up with an MRI"), I just happened to open up a birthday card I received from my beloved Grace (aka: she who must be obeyed!), who is a big Bono fan. The card reads simply, "Happy birthday, Sweetheart. I wanted to get you the perfect present, but I still haven't found what I'm looking for." Broad Channel — why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

FROM THE RBA “Taste” events are gaining popularity in neighborhoods around New York City as an opportunity to connect residents and visitors alike to the local business community. These types of events cater to the indecisive (and who isn’t indecisive?), offering attendees a small taste of items from a variety of local restaurants and bars. Rockaway Union’s “Taste of Rockaway Beach” takes place on Saturday, April 28 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. While many “taste” events take place under one roof, requiring participating businesses to transport their food and supplies to the event venue, Taste of Rockaway sends the public from business to business (for those who don’t like to walk, the boardwalk is a great place to ride a bike on a beautiful spring day!). This model makes it eas-
Page 29
RBA Businesses To Participate in Taste of Rockaway ier on businesses while simultaneously saving the producer venue costs. One of the biggest issues that Rockaway businesses face is that the public just doesn’t know that they’re there. Taste of Rockaway also serves the local businesses by getting attendees through the door to view the space and to mentally note the business location (for their next return!). Founder Robert Kaskel of Thai Rock says, “Taste of Rockaway started as a thank you to the neighborhood from the merchants after we were getting back on our feet from Sandy's destruction and while the event has grown, it continues today as a thank you to all who enjoy and support the many family-owned and operated businesses of the Rockaways.” Mara Valentino of Uncle Louie G’s adds, “An ad in the
paper won’t give you this kind of public exposure… It’s a great family day, to welcome spring, walk around the peninsula, and meet and greet… it’s fun!” We’re excited that so many RBA member businesses are taking part in Taste of Rockaway! Swing by the following members’ places: Bungalow Bar & Restaurant, Community House, CROM Physical Culture, Elegante Pizza, Fat Cardinal Provisions, Liquid Bread, Paninico, Polly & Esther, Rockaway Brewing Company, Rockaway Roasters, Station RBNY, Uncle Louie G, and Zingara Vintage. Tickets to Taste of Rockaway can be purchased at each participating merchant for $15 in advance, $20 day of event. Tickets may also be purchased online at www.rockawayunion. org by credit card, and picked up any time at Thai Rock. The Rockaway Union is a not-
for-profit organization comprised of the businesses, organizations, and residents of Rockaway between Beach 59th and Beach 114th streets, dedicated to helping businesses succeed. Can’t get enough “tastes?” Be sure to check out Queens County Economic Development Corporation's (QEDC) "Queens Taste” on May 1 at the New York Hall of Science. Tickets include all-you-can-eat samples from at least 30 Queens restaurants, all-you-can-drink samples from local breweries, wine stores, and spirits purveyors, all-you-can-fit samples of artisan desserts, and allyou-can-explore admission to the New York Hall of Science. Go to http://thequeenstaste. com/#home for tickets. For more information from the Rockaway Business Alliance, send an email to info@Rockawaybusinessalliance.org.

HOW WE EXPERIENCE EXPERIENCES I was recently on a work trip in a vacation spot and observed how so many people were taking selfies and photos, not really “having” experiences, being there to enjoy the surroundings and each other. One morning at breakfast I observed the following. There were two tables, each occupied by a couple, one had their phones on the table, the other did not. The couple without the phones out were relaxing, looking out at the scenery, talking here and there. The
other couple said a few words but were compelled to pick up their phones and do something. Check or write. I thought that the couple without the phones were just being in their experience of having breakfast together, and the other was preoccupied while having breakfast together. Imagine someone from a century ago looking on at people always engaged with a device. He/ she would think it is crazy! Checking, taking photos, taking selfies, posting and on and on. And to be

preoccupied rather than being there enjoying is counter-vacation! My view is that it really takes away from why we vacation in the first place. “They” want us to be reliant on these devices and all of the media associated because it is big business bucks. I resist the power over me in my personal life. For work, it is a given, we are always connected and communicating. But I try to draw a line outside of work. And this to me has to do with how I experience experiences. We learn in yoga study to be present. Being present allows for experiences that could be fuller and more meaningful. You won’t miss the first butterfly sighting of the season if you are looking up and around, absorbing surroundings and being present to where you are at that moment. You won’t miss an amazing rainbow if you expand your sight vision rather than looking at a device or selfie-ing. You will perhaps get to know someone better or deepen a relationship by being together in conversation and experience, rather than sitting with
The Rockaway Times each other but being preoccupied by outside communication via the “device.” It comes down to making the choice of how we want to live our lives, rather than that being forced on us, which leads to that constant communication and using devices in an addictive way. Thinking about it first rather than just going with it and picking up texts and communication instantly is the first step in making the choice. You may want to live that way. Or you may want to be reminded to take in all that is around you and to be engaged with people when you are with them. There is so much more to it too. That constant outside stimulation leaves no room for introspection, thoughtfulness and creativity, to name a few. On the path to becoming robots! Without thinking, feeling and self-expression, we lose our individuality. Let us be individuals experiencing experiences with awareness and feeling. May you be happy. May you be free. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Curious Dear Enchantress, I've been to your retreat, I’m in your Awkward Enchanted Coven on Facebook, and I wonder this about you and other really empathic powerful women: I see how you help women, and I’ve experienced your work, and it’s beautiful, SUPER helpful and can be intense. Do you ever feel because you're so gifted it becomes burdensome because it comes with responsibilities? Dear Curious, Where it can get tricky and
burdensome, is where there is no safe container or time limit or meeting agreement, and a person starts to overshare, or when someone who I just met begins to talk badly about themselves with no end in sight. Even when I have amazing boundaries, and find a way to help this person who is oversharing come to a stop, that's when the holding becomes a lot. Because I have worked in this field of behavior for SO LONG, I can have compassion for this person, and I have avenues to invite them into, or can refer them to.

Another time I start to feel heavy in the holding, is when women fight for their limitations, and declare how their being "stuck" is the only way. To answer the other part of your question, I love the responsibility that all this holding gives me. It feeds the purpose of my passion, which is to guide magically creative women, who hide, to have the confidence of a showgirl! I must add, for those women who ARE magically creative and this question brings up a fear that sharing your gifts will be "too much," you will always get as much as you can handle, when you grow, you will get more. And of course having your own support tools and community is the most important, along with boundaries. I have had to grow in being ok with perhaps disappointing people, when I am invited to events or workshops, and have to cancel last moment, or I don’t return a text or email right away. It’s actually me taking care of myself,
and wanting to reply when I can actually be present to read the message to me. It’s a major skill to learn how to speak my “no’s” and “yeses” with ease and grace, so I don’t give or get guilty or worry hangovers. It can be a slippery slope, nobody's perfect, and the times I feel overwhelmed, what I know always works? MOVEMENT, somatic movement, moving the body, moves the emotions. Enchantress Shane coaches and guides magically creative women wanting confidence in their lives. Check her out at www.enchantedembodiment.com or you can attend Beginner Burlesque classes once a month in Rockaway at The Castle on Beach 117th Street.

Denmark Visits Broad Channel Since Hurricane Sandy, the Rockaways and Broad Channel have become national and international places to learn about rebuilding and resiliency. On Saturday, April 14, the Broad Channel Historical Society hosted two dozen students from Denmark ready to study just that. The students, ages 18 to 25, were from Krogerup People’s University just outside of Copenhagen. Group leader Frederikke Nayberg noted, “This particular group of students all attend a program focusing on urban studies. “I thought it would be incredibly interesting for them to get acquainted with a different side of New York City than one meets as a tourist or that is shown in television, she said. They were met at the Broad Channel train station by BC Historical Society chairperson Barbara Toborg, society member/resident Dorothy Fraher and member and journalist Dan Guarino. During her own U.S. studies at Columbia University, Nayberg met and interviewed Toborg last year. From the train the BC group took the students on a walking tour through the unique island community. Noting that Broad Channel was officially founded in the late 1800’s, they explained that well before there were bridges, the only connection to elsewhere was by railroad or boat. Back then the train station was the original center of town. The students got a firsthand look at Broad Channel’s history, its character as a community, experience during Sandy and its efforts to rebuild in an area more and more prone to rising tides and future storms. “As urban studies students, they were interested in how we coped with Sandy and how we are moving forward, Toborg said. Behind the houses on East 6th Road, itself often prone to tidal flooding, Toborg’s husband Fred pointed out some
of the abundant wildlife in Jamaica Bay. The group was also told how Sandy affected the transportation system and what measures have since been built to protect it. Many students expressed an interest in the rebuilding of homes in the Channel. They were shown numerous examples of homes being raised above future flood levels, and others which were demolished and built new. They were also shown a newly assembled prefabricated home. They also asked how government has or has not helped in these efforts. On the west side of the island, American Littoral Society chapter president Don Riepe explained how marshlands are being revitalized as a buffer to future storms. “We are very interested, in that climate change is a very important in Denmark. It is a very flat country and already we have had flooding in Copenhagen. At the end of their tour, the students stopped for lunch at All-American Bagel & Barista. Before parting, the Broad Channel residents and their Danish visitors exchanged gifts. The Danes received a Broad Channel pictorial calendar, signed copies of Dan Guarino’s two books on the Channel, and copies of The Rockaway Times. The BC group received “a $100 donation to the Historical Society, a book on Copenhagen, a beautiful bowl, and a brochure from their school, Toborg noted. All received the bond of shared knowledge and, though now many miles apart, friendship. Photo by Dan Guarino

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
Special Feature — Hear From Other Local Autism Warriors As April is National Autism month, I wanted to use my column, "Life With Our 'Artistic' Child” as a platform for local caregivers and friends of loved ones with autism to share their personal experiences — not only the heartaches and frustrations — but the mind-blowing joys autism stirs in all our hearts. An infinite amount of thanks to The Rockaway Times, which has been so supportive from the genesis of this column and the Rockaway Beach “Artistic” Families support group (RBAFSG), which I founded over a-year-and-a-half ago. My next guest to express her heartfelt experiences, feelings and desires for our Rockaway autism community is Neponsit resident, Jane Garfield Frank, a mom of sons: Daniel, age 12; Gabriel, 17; and 20-year-old Jonathan, who is on the autism spectrum. Meeting Jane has been such an inspiration on so many levels, and I am truly grateful to have crossed paths with this generous kindred spirit, whose heart exceeds its weight in gold. Authored by Jane Garfield Frank I am a Rockaway girl, born and raised, and though I've lived elsewhere, when it was time to raise my family, I knew
where I wanted to be. A private person, my idea of bliss is a walk along the shore or sitting under a beach umbrella with a good book. I am contemplative and philosophical by nature; the ocean is the perfect companion for me. I am also the mother of three sons, the oldest of which has an autism spectrum disorder and is 20 years old. Through my many years of parenting him, navigating schooling, assessments, socialization challenges, and sadly, bullying he encountered, I became an advocate with strong viewpoints about a flawed system and how society can improve its understanding of autism. This role made me outspoken and vigilant — a startling contrast to the quiet loner described above. But they co-exist, these two sides of me, and they have made all the difference to my son, Jonathan, who is truly the light of my life. Living by the ocean, one cannot help tap into something spiritual — however one defines that term. One look at surfers during extreme weather or the lone nighttime fisherman at the shore, and you'll understand. Pray for surf, the saying goes. The ocean reminds us that there is something far more powerful and
mighty than we are. It is humbling and majestic, by turns our friend and confidante — or a fierce and unpredictable challenge to our concepts of stability and normality, as we found out so overwhelmingly from Hurricane Sandy. Yet despite that difficult, painful time for our community, we cannot deny the appreciation for all that is important and cherished in life that we individually and collectively gained from that experience. The ocean is glorious, challenging, unpredictable, and inspiring all at once. And so it is for an Autism parent. When my son received a diagnosis of ASD, I hit the ground running. He was my first child, and as a new mother with no connection to autism groups or other autism moms, I felt isolated and overwhelmed. There was much to learn about the disorder itself, the how and why of the symptoms. There was a complex governmental system to navigate to ensure his educational and developmental needs were met. Thinking of that time, I remember feeling unmoored, worried, and struggling to make sense of it all, but I never let my issues take center stage. My focus remained completely on my son — what was needed to make sure he got the right education and services. I knew that this little person, who some clinicians, teachers and society were so quick to label, put in a box and write off — was so much more. So while I fought for his entitlements under the law, I also fought to make HIM see, and by extension the world to see, that although he has a disability, it is merely a PART of who he is — bringing many challenges, but beauty too — and importantly, that he does not have to let disability define him. And he totally got it. So when he was subjected to cruel, insensitive comments of bullies ("you're brain damaged" is one that stands out) or judgmental reactions of random adults for merely being different, it hurt his feelings, but he was strong in his un-
Page 39 derstanding that it was THEIR problem, indicative of THEIR limitations to view him solely through the lens of what made him unusual, and dismissive of his whole person. That I have been able to impart this understanding to my son is one of the greatest gifts I have given him. As the poet Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote: "To be yourself in a world constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment." My dearest Jonathan is a kind, loving, introspective, sincere, compassionate and much beloved son, brother and friend. His school's principal describes him as "one of the nicest people to have ever walked these halls.” He struggles with processing rapid-fire information, abstract thinking, grade level material, and may not be "sophisticated" with all the connotations that invokes in our resume-driven culture, but he has fought long and hard to challenge and motivate himself, even as others mandated by law to do so, failed him in this. He has confidence that comes from self-awareness and emotional intelligence. Most importantly, he possesses an enthusiasm and appreciation for LIFE and all it has to offer. Seeing that expressed by him is a precious gift not only to me, but to the world. It is humbling to witness and be a part of — like that mighty ocean — and inspires gratitude and awe. I pray for a society, a world that can understand this fully, unconditionally, and make room for our kids, because they are beautiful, valuable beings who have so much to contribute.

ROCKAWAY LITTLE LEAGUE WEEK 1 RECAP On Wednesday, April 11—a very cold and windy night— Rockaway Little League started off the 2018 Baseball/Softball Season as the Pee Wee Senior Rockaway Midshipmen Blue Jays defeated the AOH Athletics 9-0. Unfortunately for the A’s, they just couldn’t shake off the cold and wind and the Blue Jays were having a great start. All the players had fun and were happy to kick off the season, with everyone demonstrating good sportsmanship, respect and fair play. Major Boys games kicked off with Delmar Pizza Reds enjoying their first win against Curran's Meats Cubs, with a score of 9-4. Legion American Legion Post #272 MNB Cardinals put big numbers on the scorecard, enjoying a 14-3 win versus the Allstate Rockaway Park MNB Dodgers. The Dodgers are just getting warmed up, can’t wait to see more games from both! In other Major Boys games played, L. Mahoney Real Estate MJB Rockies took a 12-4 win over the Curran's Meats MJB Cubs—watch out Rockies, the Cubs are just getting warmed up! In Thursday night’s game, Breezy Point Lumber PWS Car-
win over the Knights of Columbus 2672 MJG Wildcats (13-10). In picture-perfect weather on Saturday, with a blue-sapphire sky, the lush fields of Fort Tilden were warmed by the long-absent sun, gifting us all an early preview of spring games ahead. The day was especially joyful as 3rd baseman, Charlie (Guppy) Smith returned to play after recovering from last summer’s serious knee injury. Good to see you in playing form, Guppy! Smith’s team, Denis S. O'Connor Inc. MJB Giants had lots to celebrate in their 14-8 win over the Delmar Pizza MJB Reds. Girls’ softball kept us on the edge of our seats with Elegante Restaurant/Pizzeria MNG Firebirds and Rockaway W.I.S.H. MNG Clippers ending their game in a 2-2 tie. Look out for that rematch! Congratulations to the Graybeards MJG Blazers’s win over Lana's Loft MJG Bobcats (16-9). While the Rockaway Little League 2018 games schedule has kicked into high gear, don’t miss out on the annual Opening Day Celebration. The Fort Tilden parade steps off opposite the Fire House at 10 a.m., (line up 9:45 a.m.). Gates to Field 5 open at 11 a.m., giving entry to BBQ burgers and
dinals vs. Servpro of Northwest Brooklyn, PWS Pirates won a close game by a 2-1 score – Congrats Breezy Point! Girls’ softball delighted in a high-scoring game in the Major Girl Opener with Lola Star MJG Pioneers
hot dogs and a slew of bouncy house rides for the kids. Special thanks to our local sponsors and crafters who support our teams and generously donate items for the Chinese Auction. Admission

a day of baseball and softball started up by our beloved Challenger Division. See you on the field!
Get To Runnin’ Summer is soon approaching (we hope!) and the time to chisel down those summer bodies is winding down. Why not go for a run this weekend? There are some big run events for a great cause this weekend. Saturday, April 21 is Rockapulco Run’s Spring Half Marathon., starting at 9 a.m. on the boardwalk at Beach 102nd Street. All runners should head to the Community House prior to the race to pick up their numbers, or to register that morning, starting at 7:30 a.m. It’s $45 to enter and runners can pre-register at Rockapulcorun.com If a half-marathon is not your speed, the longtime tradition of the Rockaway Rotary Run is Sunday, April 22! This 5K race, sponsored by Sweet ‘N Low and held in memory of the late Barbara Eisenstadt, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year! This race includes a ¼ mile fun-run for kids, start-
ing at 9:30 a.m., and a 5K for all runners at 10 a.m. Starting at 8 a.m. at the Community House, runners are welcome to check in and pick up their numbers and t-shirts. The runners will then head back to the Community House after the boardwalk 5K, where there will be an after-party and awards ceremony for the top finishers in various age categories. The fee is $15 for kids in advance or $20 the day of, and $25 for adults in advance, or $30 the day of. The race is the biggest fundraiser for the Rockaway Rotary, which helps others such as veterans, food banks, swim programs, those with polio, and many other charities. To pre-register, head to www. RockawayRotary.com. If you miss this weekend's events, next Saturday, April 28 is the 5K run/walk for CDH. Head to rockapulcorun.com for details.
