Photo Contest Entries to Get Spotlight on Saturday By Katie McFadden
Wow. Rockaway’s got talent. This week’s front page has just a handful of amazing shots that were sent to The Rockaway Times for this year’s 2nd Annual Photo Contest. We received more than 1,000 entries and they’re all going to get a public spotlight on Saturday, April 22. At the end of February, we opened the contest to all and the participation has been overwhelming. We know people may have been busy with the recent Easter and Passover holidays, so we wanted to give our readers a reminder about the first round of judging this Saturday. The general public is welcome to check out the amazing photos taken around town. All of the photos will be printed by contest organizer, John Cori and the 4 x 6 prints will be on display at the Bungalow Bar (377 Beach 92nd
Street) starting at 6 p.m. on April 22. Six judges are going to have the tough job of narrowing down the more than 1,000 photos to just 30 in round one. One of these photos may have a shot at the $500 grand prize, which will be awarded in July. Since last year’s contest was such a hit, we wanted to do it again, and even bigger and better with the help of the Parks Department. However, that first meant making it simpler. This year, we narrowed the categories down from 10 to five, to make things a little easier. These included 1) Sunsets/ sunrises 2) Beach shots (surfers, lifeguards, jetties, beach fun) 3) Bayside shots (the skyline, Jamaica Bay, boats, etc.) 4) Animals/Pets (dogs, whales, birds) and 5) Miscellaneous (things that are relevant to the area, but don’t fit any of the other categories). We asked that everyone submit no more
than two entries per category, meaning up to 10 photos total. After the photos are narrowed down on Saturday, the top 30 will go on to the next round. All of these semi-finalists will be printed on large 2 x 3-foot posters, which will be displayed along the boardwalk at Beach 17th, Beach 59th, Beach 67th, Beach 98th and Beach 116th Street, thanks to the Department of Parks and Recreation. The photos will be up in time for the beach opening ceremony, starting on May 25, and will remain until July 9. There is also a chance that this display will spread into Riis Park, where the photos will be close to the area that is home to the Rockaway Artists Alliance, which is helping to make banners and artwork for the contest. The top 30 photos will undergo a second round of judging, and this time it will be by the public. On June 11, people can
head to Beach 17th Street at 11 a.m. or Beach 116th Street at 2 p.m. to cast their votes for their favorites. This will also take place on June 17 at 10 a.m. on Beach 67th Street, 12 p.m. at Beach 59th Street and 2 p.m. at Beach 98th Street. John Cori, who has been instrumental in making this contest possible, will be on hand to help people through the voting process. After the public judging in June, the top 30 will be narrowed down to a top 10. The final judging will take place at Caracas at the Beach 106th Concession on July 2 at 10 a.m. There, the winner will be announced. The top photo winner will take home a $500 grand prize from The Rockaway Times and will get front-page recognition. There will also be runner-up prizes like a month-long ferry pass from Hornblower, the operator of the new Rockaway ferry, and more.

Reveling In Rivalry Do high school kids have rivalries anymore? I don’t know any high school kids so I can’t ask. They must still have them out in the Midwest, where things are more likely to be frozen in time. Friday Night Lights, Hoosiers, that kind of stuff. And it seems college rivalries still exist but high school craziness seems like a relic of yesteryear. Maybe because so many schools have closed. There were so many kids in the old days, neighborhoods would be sprinkled with kids from different schools, which lent itself to keeping rivalries alive throughout the year. You didn’t have to be at a game to know you hated kids who went to that school. Friday night basketball games were big in Brooklyn and there’d often be the threat of a big brawl
before, during, and after the game as kids from rival schools were ready to take school pride out on the jokers from that other place. Some of the rivalries were revved up by school teachers and administrators who conducted pep rallies the day of the big game. The chants were innocent: Two bits! Four bits! Six bits! A Dollar! All for Nazareth stand up and holler. Everybody joined in though no one had a clue what a bit was. Another favorite was when a pep rally leader would yell, “Silent cheer!” Everyone in the bleachers would wave their arms wildly and make faces like they were screaming but not a sound was heard. And then the guy would shout, “Louder!” That was the innocent side. But in those days, slurs were part of everyday lingo. Nazareth High School guys tried to

sissify Xaverian High School by calling it Gayverian or XaFairy-ian. I’m pretty sure there was little song or chant that incorporated those unfortunate terms. And some called Bishop Ford High School - Pill Hill – because it had a druggie rep. (And you Xaverian and Ford guys reading this, I’m hoping your feelings aren’t hurt. If they are? Tough.) This stuff wasn’t limited to boys. I went to watch a girls’ cheerleading competition one time and the girl rivalries were fierce. What was I doing at a cheerleading competition? You have to ask? Some of these grudges born out of rivalries continue for years after graduation. Somehow Bishop McDonnell, a girls’ high school that closed in 1973, came up in conversation. The mere mention of Bishop triggered a chant from a St. Brendan’s High School grad. But first, a little history. It was the early 1970s and there
apparently was some discussion about the Diocese having to close either one of those two schools. The rumors inspired a little ditty from the Brendan’s girls. GROOVY GROOVY GROOVY TOUGH TOUGH TOUGH THEY MIGHT BE CLOSING BISHOPS BUT THEY CAN'T CLOSE US NO NO NO I relayed this chant to a Bishops alum who admitted some didn’t take this lightly. “Twenty two years after Bishop’s closed, when I had my third child, my friend, Eileen, called from California. She was gushing with excitement that Stephen and I had a baby.” Eileen: “What’s his name?” Me: “Brendan.” Eileen: “No, really; what’s his name?” Me: “Brendan.” Eileen: “How could you do that? We hated those f*$#ing girls!”

The cause of the March 22 apartment fire at 102-00 Shore Front Parkway that destroyed everything the Wroblewski family owned, has been determined. According to the FDNY report, the cause was “careless discard of smoking materials on balcony,” meaning a cigarette or cigar was to blame. Monika Wroblewski says no one in her family smokes. The fire started outside on the balcony due to a cigarette or cigar dropped from another balcony, and the fire spread inside to the apartment. To those who smoke, please use caution when discarding your cigarettes. *****
Speaking of fires, there were two earlier this week. On Sunday afternoon, April 16, a fire broke out in a two-story mixed occupancy building at 8-08 Cross Bay Boulevard in Broad Channel.
THURSDAY, APRIL 20, 2017 On Monday afternoon, April 17, Engine 266 responded to a fire in an attached three-story private dwelling at 189 Beach 95th Street. In both cases, FDNY responded quickly and no injuries were reported. *****
Dan Guarino announced that he will be running for City Council, challenging Eric Ulrich. Dan has a resume. The Broad Channel resident is president of the Rockaway Artists Alliance, founder of the Broad Channel Free Press, former assistant editor of The Wave, former reporter for The Rockaway Times, editor of The North Shore Local, author of Broad Channel Through Time and volunteer at too many things to count. *****
The 8th Annual Great Chili Cook-Off is set for Friday, April 28 at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus. It’s always hot fun with prizes and a DJ. Tickets are $20 (kids under 12 free) and it’s for a good cause as money raised goes to support the 100th Precinct Community Council. It’s the only real fundraising event the
Council holds, so a big turnout would really help. *****
Community House is hiring. The bar/restaurant on Beach 102nd Street is looking for bartenders, waitresses, runners, etc. State your interest in an email to Carl, CMorales1969@Gmail.com *****
The Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge will be closed to traffic in both directions during overnight hours from Thursday, April 20 through Friday morning, April 21 and again from Monday, April 24 through Wednesday morning, April 26. All traffic will be detoured to the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. The Q35 bus will maintain its regular route. *****
There are more options for good eats! Last week, new Chinese and Japanese restaurants opened. The old Empire Wok (114-07 Beach Channel Drive) was recently bought and reopened as Big Apple Chinese Food. On Beach 116th Street, Sakura Japanese Restaurant opened in the building where the former
Page 7 99 Cent store was split into three. Both restaurants offer online ordering. Check out BigAppleRockawayPark.com and 215Sakura. com for menus. *****
On Saturday, April 22, there will be a Bishop McDonnell HS reunion at the former Bishop McDonnell (260 Eastern Pkwy). The reunion will be for the classes of 1930, ’42, ’52, ’57, ’62, ’67 and 72 but all grads and their guests are welcome. The doors open at 11 a.m. Free parking is available. The celebration is $90 per person. For information contact Rita Monaghan-Maloney at 718-8572700 ext. 2253. *****
Scam alert. Some locals told us of a phone call from “CVS” saying prescriptions needed to be updated. (Calls went to some who don’t even shop at CVS). It’s an attempt to get personal information from people. Tell the seniors in your life to avoid this one. *****
We know of at least two locals who finished the Boston Marathon. Congrats to Kevin Quinn and Martina Featherston.

Ferry Schedule Released
By Katie McFadden
The ferry’s maiden voyage is just around the corner and the city recently released the schedule so commuters can start planning their trips. The first ferry will leave Rockaway, bright and early at 5:30 a.m. on Monday, May 1. That 5:30 start will be a constant for the ferry schedule, much to the joy of workers that need to be in Manhattan early. The ferry will then run every hour on the half hour, meaning the next trip is at 6:30 a.m. and rides continue until 8:30 p.m. on weekdays. With the boat making a stop at the Brooklyn Army Terminal, the trip will take about 59 minutes to get to Pier 11 near Wall Street. On weekends, the first ferry will leave Rockaway a little later at 6:30 a.m. and the last trip from Rockaway will be later, at 9:30 p.m., giving beach visitors plenty of time to enjoy the day.
“We decided to add a 5:30 a.m. trip to the Rockaway route after hearing from local elected officials and community leaders that an earlier trip would better serve Rockaway residents. We believe the 5:30 a.m. trip will allow even more Rockaway residents to take advantage of NYC Ferry,” Ryan Birchmeir, spokesperson for the EDC said. For the return trip, from Pier 11 to Rockaway, with the stop in Brooklyn, the first ferry will leave Manhattan at 6:30 a.m. on weekdays and the last boat home will be at 8:30 p.m. On the weekends, those looking to get to the beach early from Manhattan, will be able to do so starting at 7:30 a.m. and the last weekend boat from the city to Rockaway will be at 9:30 p.m. The full schedule is available at www.ferry.nyc.

Schwach Pens New Take on Flight 587 Crash On November 12, 2001, about 9:16 a.m., American Airlines Flight 587 en route to the Dominican Republic, suddenly broke apart and crashed down in Belle Harbor, minutes after takeoff from John F. Kennedy International Airport. All 260 people aboard the Airbus A300, including five infants, were killed. Was it simply malfunction or an act of terrorism? Rockaway native, Howard Schwach, in his riveting new book, Flight 587 Down, A Novel of Terrorism and Betrayal, pens a fictionalized account that gives theories as to what may have happened that fateful day. Schwach, already a published author with several young adult educational books under his belt, as well as being a retired teacher, and former editor of The Wave newspaper, emphasizes that his book is purely fiction. “When I was editor of The Wave, I researched and covered this story for five years. I don’t believe that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) told the truth about how the plane really came down. However, I decided to play on a few conspiracy theories on what really happened, and this is how this fictionalized account came about,” Schwach said. Schwach’s book has quite the cast of characters all entangled in a streaming plot of religious fanaticism juxtaposed with deceit, murder and lust. The two terrorists that were recruited to shoot down the plane. A community newspaper editor of the Beachcomber with a son that is a cop, who becomes lovers with a Muslim newswoman investigating the story. An eyewitness who actually saw what happened, but can not come forward because he faked his death in the 9/11 World Trade Center attack as he did not want to return to his former life with his wife because he

found a new love, and hated his job. So he disappears, but is tormented because he cannot go to the police since everyone would know he was alive. A local guy, who finds a piece of the wreckage, doesn’t realize that he has a crucial clue, which could prove that the plane was shot down. He tries to sell the wreckage on eBay, but is soon after assassinated by one of the terrorists. The cops can’t figure out why he was killed until they discover what he was trying to sell. With all of these clues, the detectives start putting the pieces together. The plot thickens when the Beachcomber editor hosts a meeting for eyewitnesses to share what they know. The man who was pretending to be dead, realizes that he has to come forward and reveal his secret. Schwach started the book in 2006. “After writing children’s non-fiction books, one of the goals on my bucket list was to write an adult fiction novel. The crash seemed like a good topic. However, I got derailed because though I was retired as a teacher, I was busy being editor of The Wave and well, just life. Then my wife passed away and I couldn’t write. I would sit down and look at it, and say to myself, ‘I have to get back to this.’ At this point the book was three quarters written. A year later, I started seeing this woman, who said to me, ‘Why don’t you finally finish it.’ “So I did. However, publishing a book these days is pretty competitive and difficult. I took this course on how to self-publish your own eBook, and finally here it is. “I didn’t necessarily write this book for the money or to write the great American novel. My bucket list was not to go skydiving or travel, I just wanted to get an adult fiction book published,” Schwach said. Flight 587 Down, A Novel of Terrorism and Betrayal, can be purchased on all eBook platforms, including smashwords.com, amazon.com and iBook.

Applied Behavior Analysis for Autism
Dear Editor: I am not a reporter or a journalist, not even a writer, but after reading an article in the Rockaway Times I felt I needed to take pen to paper to clear up some misinformation, myths and misconceptions purported in the article, Far Rock Enchantress in which it refers to Applied Behavior Analysis as “overrated” and “silly.” Applied Behavior Analysis is the science of human behavior and involves the principles of learning theory. Quoting the definition by Baer, Wolf, & Risley (1968): “Applied Behavior Analysis is the process of
THURSDAY, APRIL 20, 2017 systematically applying interventions based upon the principles of learning theory to improve socially significant behaviors to a meaningful degree, and to demonstrate that the interventions employed are responsible for the improvement in behavior“ The efficacy of applied behavior analysis as an intervention for individuals with autism has been documented in hundreds of scientific research articles. ABA is heralded as a safe and effective treatment for autism. It has been endorsed by numerous state and federal agencies, including the U.S. Surgeon General in 1999 and the New York State Department of Health in 1999. ABA therapy is the only autism-specific therapy covered by private insurance companies and other employee benefit plans. New York became the 29th state to enact autism insurance reform on November
1, 2011 deeming ABA as medically necessary. In addition, the National Standards Project and the National Professional Development Center on Autism Spectrum Disorders each recently established the techniques that make up ABA, such as reinforcement, prompting, and discrete trail teaching (DTT) as evidence-based. There are many different teaching strategies that are used under the umbrella of Applied Behavior Analysis each of these instructional techniques has a rich empirical support base. These include shaping and chaining behaviors, pivotal response training, incidental teaching, fluency-based instruction, activity schedules, task analysis, video modeling and many more. (For more information on these techniques, go to www.autisminternetmodules.org). Before an ABA treatment program is implemented, a
Licensed Behavior Analyst (LBA) who is typically also a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) will conduct an assessment of the child’s and family’s needs, interests, preferences, strengths, and goals. Each ABA treatment program is unique to the individual receiving intervention. There is typically a team of people who support the therapeutic interventions (i.e. parents, teachers, direct care workers, siblings), and they are best overseen by an individual who is highly skilled, draws from the research, and has the ability to create data-driven individualized programs. Reinforcement is one of the cornerstones of ABA therapy. In the beginning of an ABA therapy program, reinforcement is used frequently to shape appropriate behavior and as motivation for learning. While food (“the cookie”) may be used initially, it is paired
Page 15 with praise or secondary reinforcers, which will be the key to the intervention, especially those that occur naturally and food is faded out. This is often done by pairing the new item (e.g., preferred toy, song) or activity (e.g., high-five, hug, smile.) with the original reinforcer. In my 20 years of practice, I have been witness to amazing achievements made by children on the autism spectrum which were made possible by using ABA therapy with a dedicated, highly trained staff and empowered families. If you would like any additional information on ABA therapy or have any questions I can be reached at LauraLeonard95@gmail.com. I am a LBA and BCBA and founder of ABA TREE and director of the ABA Program at Challenge Early Intervention Center. Laura Leonard, MS, BCBA, LBA

Civic Slams SHORE FRONT PLAN
By Kami-Leigh Agard
Late Tuesday evening, April 18, Rockaway locals came out in full force for an uber emergency meeting at Knights of Columbus about the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) plan to create metered perpendicular parking, an additional bike lane and speed bumps on the southbound passageway of Shore Front Parkway (SFP). According to John Cori, president of the Rockaway Beach Civic Association (RBCA), this was not RBCA’s initial proposal proposed to the DOT. “This is another land/ money grab by the city. All we asked them was for enhanced crosswalks, not just at traffic lights, but at several key points, where we know folks cross to get to the beach and boardwalk, without be-
ing stopped by police for jaywalking. For us, it was more about a safety issue for people crossing SFP.” According to an impromptu poll at the meeting facilitated by Cori, 31 locals are opposed, while 4 are for DOT’s plan. Though some locals support the idea of additional parking, most are pretty livid. Joanne Smith, who attended the meeting, commented, “We are basically being extorted. If we want the cross walks, we have to accept DOT’s plans to have back-in parking, meters and another bike lane on the southbound side of SFP. Our view of the beach will look like sh*t with the 200 additional cars. But the city has found a way to once again make money and screw Rockaway again," Smith said.

Chili Cookoff Set For April 28 Think you got what it takes to be top dog of chili? Or perhaps you just want to chow down. There will be plenty to sample and the competition will be fierce at the 100th Precinct Community Council 8th Annual Chili Cookoff. It all takes place at the Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th Street) at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 28. Several local businesses, restaurants, fire houses, precincts and organizations will be cooking up their best chili and putting it to the test next Friday. Trophies will be awarded to the first, second and third best chilis as chosen by three judges who will have to sample them all. There may also be a people’s choice award this year. Last year, Last Stop on Beach 116th Street was crowned chili king
out of nearly 30 entries. The VFW in Broad Channel and FDNY Engine 266 took second and third. Tickets are $20 for adults and free for kids under 12. With a ticket, you’ll get to try all of the chilis while a DJ keeps the crowds entertained. Several local businesses have donated great prizes that will be raffled off and there will also be a 50/50. According to 100th Precinct Community Council President Joe Young, the chili cookoff is the only major fundraiser for the organization, which does not receive funding from the city. The money goes toward Council activities and things such as the cop of the month awards. For tickets or information on how to enter this year’s contest, call Joe at 718-6344970 or Kathy at 917-284-0410.

Ancient Art of Yoga Nidra By Kathy Pastina
Most of us have come to a point in life where our greatest necessity is peace of mind. The half waking and half dreaming state is a potential area for human power. The practice of yoga nidra or deep relaxation is a tool to unlock the doorway to find peace within and build resilience against stress. We all have this potential, but in our modern world we have lost the point of balance and harmony. It has been said that the greatest threat to our faith and inner peace is distraction. We live in a world where we are driven to distraction with technology that gives us an unending stream of information that is not only exhausting, but stressful, creating a domino effect on our body that turns on our fight or flight response. This comes in handy when facing a threat of imminent danger. We see a growling dog and run the other way. It’s a builtin response for all living things and helps us out of dangerous situations. In today’s world though, most of us get stuck on stress mode experiencing anxiety and fear to a perceived threat that most times doesn’t exist, perhaps only in our cycling, aggressive minds. We just don’t know how to turn it off. The practice of yoga nidra or deep relaxation can help. Yoga nidra means yogic sleep with a trace of awareness and is an ancient technique of relaxing the mind, body and spirit. It’s a process of letting go and being here in the moment. A deep meditation using the body as a focus of awareness. The theory behind yoga nidra is that it works on your energy body, your subtle energy or life force. Our breath contains
this energy or “prana” and interestingly enough the word for breath in latin is “spiritus” (spirit). Our spirit at our core can find inner peace. When our body and breath are guided into a calm state we can more easily access this peace. The practice restores balance and enhances the flow of your energy. Little by little you are guided from the furthest part of the body and taken inward. Guided to a state between wakefulness and sleep, we open into deeper phases of the mind which has been researched and scientifically proven to reduce anxiety, depression, tension, pain and improve calm, sleep and overall wellbeing. The body and mind turns off the fight or flight mode and turns on the rest and relaxation mode. This rest mode is not the same kind achieved through sitting in the lazy boy at home with a glass of wine! Yoga nidra brings awareness to the physical, mental and energy bodies relaxing and relieving muscular, emotional and mental tensions. The body and mind don’t affect each other, they ARE each other which is why in this practice every part of your being is brought into harmony. The beautiful thing about this practice is that no experience is necessary! A class usually includes gentle stretching, breath work, as soothing, gentle music guides you into yoga nidra lying or sitting in a comfortable position with a short meditation afterwards. Come and enjoy this beautiful teaching at Ocean Bliss Yoga at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club this Friday night 7 to 8p.m. Full schedule online. May you be filled with peace and joy, love and light.

Recycled Tires By Artie Wallace
For years there have been concerns about what used tires are doing to the environment. Here is your chance to use those old tires to beautify your backyard (or even your front lawn). Any DIYer can do this well/planter project. Here is how: 1- Start off by cutting a 4-inch by 4-inch hole in opposite sides of the tire for your post (do this to both sides). 2- Lining up the holes, stack the first two tires and secure them together using screws from the inside. Repeat to add a third tire. 3- Placing your tires where you would like them, mark the ground through the bottom holes using spray paint. 4- Dig a hole about one-foot deep for your supports to fit in. 5- Place your tires over the holes and slide your supports in (supports should be 4 x 4’s 5 ½ feet long). 6- Cut a 2 x 4 to fit across the 4
x 4’s at the top and attach using screws. 7- To add a roof, cut two 2 x 4’s about two-feet long and attach them to the supports about eight inches from the top. Cut two pieces of plywood the width of the tires by 18 inches. Attach them to the top and to the 2 x 4’s you just added, forming a roof. 8- Paint/stain the wood the color of your choice. Then paint a decorative design on the tires. Be creative with your design. 9- Fill the inside of the tires with dirt and plant some flowers.

"Doll" - I have, for many years, been prone to the practice of using this term when referring to my wife Grace and have always considered the use of such a sobriquet as nothing more than a simple term of endearment. Recently I began to notice that Grace was becoming irritated with my use of this appellation but I really did not give it much thought until she finally sat me down and told me that she did not find my habit to be at all "endearing," with no further explanation forthcoming and no obvious explanation for her vexation with this issue. Unfortunately, this then led to my thought process going completely off the rails, which, at least for me, usually results in nothing but trouble. Pulling up my big boy boxers, I approached and inquired, in a mature manner, what it was that was bothering her. Did she view the term, "doll" as sexist? Did she think my predilection evinced some deep-seated misogynistic issues on my part? Did she think my use of the word, "doll" indicated that I did not respect her power and intelligence, and thus did not take her seriously as a woman and wife? Grace eyed me quizzically and then replied, "You really don't know do you?" Exasperated, I threw my arms up in abject surrender and politely asked her to explain. "I am not the only one in your life you call 'doll.’ You call both our daughters 'doll' also!" In my own defense I countered with
"how could that be a bad thing, after all they are our daughters and I love them both as well?" Grace responded, "Well then do you know that you also call the cashier at the All American Channel Market 'doll?’ You also call all the bartenders at the VFW 'doll!’ In fact, you even refer to all female telemarketers you speak with as 'doll!’ I have even heard you calling our female cats ‘doll' from time to time. As far as I am concerned 'doll' is nothing more than your go-to word when dealing with members of the opposite sex.” Discretion being the better part of valor I accepted her above described complaint as valid and vowed to immediately cease using the term to refer to her. Of course, having said that, I knew that I would have to choose a new and singular use nickname for my love, if life was to continue, as I know it. Over the next several days I experimented with various other terms when addressing "she who must be obeyed" and carefully noted her reactions. "Sunflower" - "What am I, a damned hippie left over from the 60's?" "Buttercup" - "Are you calling me a fat cow?" "Baby Love" - "Diana Ross has that one covered already!" "Honey Bun" - "Am I something you found in the bread aisle?" "Sweet-ums" - Grace simply stuck her finger down her throat accompanied by retching sounds. "Sugar" "The Archie's locked that one up back in 1969! "Baby Doll" - "Don't even go there!" "Cupcake" - "You're back in the bread aisle!" As a last resort I threw out an oldie but (at least in my mind) goody..."Cutie-Patootie" only to have Grace walk out of the room muttering to herself "he's hopeless." I followed immediately behind her and, obviously without thinking, blurted out "I'm sorry, doll, I'm sure I'll come up with something!" I think you can all guess how the rest of my day went! Broad Channel - why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
The Beguiling Puzzle Pieces of Autism
By Kami-Leigh Agard
April is National Autism Month, and one visual you’ll likely see is the puzzle piece. After reading many blogs, I was flabbergasted by how many people actually vehemently loathe the logo. One young lady who has autism said, “I hate the puzzle piece with every fiber of my being.” Also one mum of a child on the spectrum commented, “I also hate it because it makes me feel that my son is abnormal, that he can’t fit into society.” My question is what’s the big deal? The puzzle piece originated as a National Autistic Society symbol in 1963, which at that time stated, “The puzzle piece is so effective because it tells us something about autism: our children are handicapped by a puzzling condition; this isolates them from normal human contact and therefore they do not ‘fit in.’” The puzzle piece has since then co-opted by many autism organizations such as the controversial Autism Speaks. After many evolutions over the years, today it is used to symbolize the idea that autistic people are difficult to comprehend (like a puzzle) and that the "cure" for autism is the missing piece. However, after reading a recent op-ed in Time magazine by Jeffrey Lurie, chairman and CEO of the Philadelphia Eagles, who stated, “What do football, politi-
cal polarization and autism have in common? They all illuminate aspects of the human condition, explaining who we are, where we are headed and the hurdles along the way,” I came to one conclusion, Mr. Lurie you hit the nail on the head. As a mother of a child on the spectrum, I will tell you that autism is a puzzle, and for folks to go lambasting people and organizations who embrace the puzzle logo is just ridiculous. Why is autism a puzzle? Can someone explain to me why in the last two years my eightyear-old daughter stopped speaking? When she was 18 months, she used to count to 10, sing the ABC song, say, “mummy,” “daddy,” “chips,” “water,” “please,” “thank you.” Where did all that go? And if she is supposedly ‘low-functioning’ because she is non-verbal, how is she able to skateboard and roller blade like a pro? How is she able to understand directions? Why is my little girl built like a brick house with muscular abs and limbs, and amazing agility, yet with all this strength, why can’t she draw a simple linear line? Why more than ever, do we have to watch her like a hawk because she recently started putting all sorts of random objects in her mouth, which she never did before. So yes autism is a puzzling mystery. And as Lurie expressed, society’s polarization just makes
Page 29
it all the more harder for us who are struggling to understand autism, build awareness, amidst all the challenges. As human beings, so-called neurotypical or not, we are also puzzles. You know how many times at night, I have stared at the ceiling, asking God, where in the sam hill my life is going? After living on my own in London, Manchester, Boston, Trinidad, how did I end up moving back home with my parents, frustrated that I can’t do more to help my daughter. Sometimes, I even implore God to take all my limbs in exchange for a blessing of her speech. We are all puzzles, but the beautiful aspect of autism is that every day some pieces start to interlock, and we learn and grow together. So instead of all this rabble-rousing about a puzzle piece, why can’t we just collaborate and do everything we can to help our loved ones with autism? When I look at my daughter, I see the most beautiful puzzle in the world. Her hair is like a lush waterfall of curls, her eyelashes
are so long, they could probably bat a fly. Her enchanting beauty and abilities puzzle me. I can’t wait for more of the puzzle pieces to start interlocking so my daughter discovers more about herself. While, I don’t agree with the notion that the last puzzle piece is the “cure” for autism, I wholeheartedly embrace it because it is a symbol that emulates her “artistic” wonders. The next Rockaway Beach “Artistic” Families support group will meet Thursday, April 27, 7 p.m. at Willderness Yard, located at 99-04A Rockaway Beach Blvd. We have quite an itinerary! Also in honor of National Autism Awareness Month, come out and enjoy a night of Rockaway music and entertainment on Saturday, April 29th hosted by Jon Kiebon at Brendan's bar, located at 112-08 Rockaway Beach Blvd. For more information email: ourartistichild@outlook.com or check out our Facebook page www.facebook.com/ groups/1240891189357280/

Thai Rock Owner is Onhand To Help Small Biz By Kami-Leigh Agard
Small business owners — are you working harder or smarter? This is a question that for years confounded Robert Kaskel, proprietor of Thai Rock Restaurant, and he has finally come up with a solution. Onhand, a user-friendly online platform that with a touch of a button, small brick-and-mortar business owners will be able to manage their operational activities sans the extra paper work and spending endless time tackling tasks that sometimes seem impossible to complete, much less track. How did Kaskel drum up this idea? In 2013, the summer after Superstorm Sandy, Kaskel and his wife, Metta, were slapped with a stinging fine by the NYS Labor Department for a lapse in their restaurant's workers' compensation insurance. “That was a crazy summer for my family as both our home and restaurant, which is our income, were both destroyed,” Kaskel said. “We were in a bad place. As the entire interior of the restaurant was destroyed, we salvaged what we could by running the restaurant on the deck and focusing our energies on our jet ski operations. “I had a mountain of mail that was piling up. Because we were really over our heads with trying to get the restaurant back on its feet, we were just overwhelmed,” Kaskel said. Kaskel said that a couple of letters in that pile happened to be about his workers’ compensation insurance. “My insurance broker called to alert me that the policy was two-weeks expired. Bewildered, I asked him if it could be reinstated. The answer was no. The carrier was unwilling to reinstate it because of the time lapse,” Kaskel said. Then six months later, Kaskel said he received a letter from the NYS Labor Department stating that since his business was without insurance for two weeks, they put an insurance policy in place for that lapsed period. However, there was a catch. He received a penalizing insurance bill for that time period which exceeded what he would usually pay for the entire year, and on top of that, they accessed him with a
few thousand dollars penalty, just to make sure that it wouldn’t happen again. For Kaskel, that was the final straw. He vowed never to let an insurance policy lapse ever again. “This unfortunate experience really put me into action. In early 2014, I created a spreadsheet in place to map all of my insurance policies, and with my information technology (IT) background on Wall Street, I am all about information organization. I entered all the information common to insurance policies such as the agent, insurance type, carrier, the premium, is it financed or paid outright every year, contacts and of course the start and end date of the insurance policy. Between my restaurant, jet ski and other endeavors, I have about 15 different insurance policies with some that expire monthly,” Kaskel said. However, a question that his wife asked him for years, really began to gnaw at his gut. “From day one of opening Thai Rock, my wife asked me the question, ‘Why are you working so hard?’ She asked me this because she observed other restaurant business owners, who didn’t spend nearly as much time with the management of operations as I did. “For a long time I did not know how to answer that question, so I thought maybe something was wrong with me. I’m working too hard and don’t know any better,” he said. Then Kaskel’s idea for Onhand was born. “My idea for Onhand answered the question that my wife repeatedly asked me — How come other owners aren’t as busy as I am. The answer was that other owners delegate tasks to both external and internal parties, however even these parties experience the same operational issues that I am besieged with. “How many systems out there actually create more paper work because you are using the system, instead of solving the problem? I took my ideas from my IT days, when I designed, implemented and supported applications for Wall Street. I economized my clients’ time. I would analyze their business, understand how they did their work,
and work with my users to make a simpler process to make their lives easier; to put in automation things that helped them, instead of slowing them down. “So I applied that same kind of thinking when first creating my business plan for Onhand. What did I do for my Wall Street clients
cation letter of task completed or an alert showing it was not completed, all generated by the system,” Kaskel said. The second component includes automated tracking of insurance; the third component tracks things like licensing, permits, taxes and real estate filing;
that could relate to the management problems I was having with Thai Rock?” Kaskel questioned. He came up with two different applications for Onhand. The first application, consists of five components: The first component encompasses managing both internal and external services for businesses such as restaurants, gas stations, healthcare offices, childcare, construction, food services. “I am focusing on the small brick-and-mortar businesses, particularly those that are heavily regulated. For example, with Thai Rock, my sprinklers need to be checked periodically, pest control, hood cleaning, beer line cleaning. These are external services provided by external parties. Then they are internal services, where employees of the business are delegated tasks such as window cleaning, or for retail services it might be stocking the shelves and inventory. I want business owners to be able to assign tasks to their employees, who will independently schedule their tasks, while the owner captures it with a certifi-
the fourth component entails tracking violations and law suits; and the fifth component encompasses human-centered assets such as tips certifications, bartending licenses, food handlers’ safety certification, etc. Onhand’s second application consists of a referral service marketplace for businesses to help them with tasks such as finding better pricing for goods they use, etc. According to the Kaskel, Onhand’s first interface would be a web browser and then in the future, a mobile app. Currently he is in the testing stage for the beta version of the browser. Kaskel is also a finalist for a $10K grant from the Queens Economic Development Corporation (QEDC) 11th Annual StartUP Business Plan Competition, sponsored by Citibank. For the competition, he had to attend QEDC classes and then submit a business plan to be judged by a panel of judges in order to win the grant. Winners will be announced, Friday, April 21. Seizures come in all different shapes and forms, from absence seizures where the person seems to just lose focus to grand mal seizures, which involve loss of consciousness, loss of bladder or bowel control, and generalized jerky body movements. For the purposes of today’s article I will focus on grand mal seizures. Seizures are caused by a sort of electrical short circuit of the brain. Abnormal brain wave activity may be seen on electroencephalogram (EEG). Seizures need to be differentiated from other conditions that may
look similar including syncope (sudden loss of consciousness), movement disorders, and other brain conditions. Hallmark seizure symptoms include tongue biting, incontinence, and a post-ictal phase. The post-ictal phase, which immediately follows a seizure, is characterized by an altered level of consciousness where the patient may seem awake but unresponsive or confused and disoriented. This phase may last at least 30 to 60 minutes. It is caused by the brain sort of resetting itself, or restoring default settings to use a computer analogy.
Page 37
Seizures can cause serious physical, psychological, and social consequences including anxiety, loss of driving privileges, limitations on employment, and occasionally even death. There is disagreement in the medical community about how to treat and manage a first unprovoked seizure. Unprovoked seizures, also known as idiopathic seizures, have no known cause, meaning all brain scans, EEGs, and other tests are normal. Some physicians will treat a first unprovoked seizure with anti-seizure medication and some will choose to observe the patient off medication. One large study showed that the two-year risk of a second unprovoked seizure was 23 percent in those treated with medication and 43 percent in those just observed. Like most medications, anti-seizure drugs can have adverse side effects including sedation, dizziness, wobbly gait, weight gain, rash, hair loss, and gastrointestinal symptoms. One study found that the two-year quality-of-life scores in those treated vs. untreated were the
same due to medication side effects. New guidelines published by the American Academy of Neurology and the American Epilepsy Society emphasize that the risk of recurrent seizures should be weighed against the risk of adverse effects from medication. They note that the risk of seizure recurrence in someone with normal brain scans and EEG is 25 percent over two years. Some patients may accept the 25 percent risk while others may not. Also patients need to know that immediate treatment after a seizure may not reduce the long-term risk for seizure remission but will reduce the risk of another seizure over the next two years. There is great variation from state to state on driving restrictions for those who have had a seizure and seizure reporting requirements for physicians. Rockaway Youth Get Their First Taste of Screen Printing
By Kami-Leigh Agard
Arverne resident, Jason Heuer, principal of Jason Heuer LLC, a design and art studio also based in Arverne, collaborated with the Rockaway Artists Alliance, (RAA) and Edgemere-based nonprofit Rockaway Rising on a fun silk screening activity for local children at RAA’s studio this past Friday, April 14th. The children and adult volunteers worked cohesively
together on creating their personal works of art through silk screening T-shirts, which Heuer described as the gateway experience to the art of screen printing. According to Heuer, “Silk screening is done by making a silk screen (stencil) with a certain image, type or logo on it. The image is in negative form so when ink is pressed (also known as squeegeed) through the screen it will come out
on the material desired. Silk screening can be done on almost any flat, semi-hard surface, including plastics, metals, glass, cardboards, papers, books and fabric.” Heuer, also a member of the RAA co-ran the activity with RAA board director, Victoria Barber, who hosted the event at their studio. To host the event and obtain the supplies needed, they placed second place for funding at a Rock Soup event, a seasonal supper series that supports creative events in Rockaway. In addition, Heuer, also a typography instructor at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in Manhattan, was able to get additional supplies donated by SVA. Stay tuned for another event with Heuer and the RAA. Plans are already in place for another
screen printing event for youth in collaboration with Rockaway Rising and Louis Harris' nonprofit, Black Surfer’s Association-East Coast. Also with RAA, Heuer and Barber will be offering adult silk screen classes in the near future. For more information, email jason@jasonheuer.com
RLL’S OPENING DAY GALA IS NEXT WEEKEND Now that the Holy days have passed, the 2017 is entering full swing with all divisions in action, Tee Ball starting this weekend, and the annual Opening Day gala on Saturday, April 29. Tickets are on sale online (rockawaylittleleagueny.siplay.com) and in the clubhouse for the annual gala. On the field, the Game of the Week was a battle between two teams in the Major Girls division that are likely to be neck and neck all season. The Graybeards Hilltoppers jumped out to an early 7-0 lead that was capped off by a tworun double ripped down the third
base line by "Awesome" Sarah Allison. There was no quit in the BBA Bonnies, though, as they chipped away at the seven-run lead behind strong hitting of Isabella Goldberg, Francesca Zito and Lauren D'Orazio. After the first inning, the pitchers settled down allowing only one run in three of the at-bats and no runs in five of the at-bats. Accolades go to Virginia Gallagher, who led the Bonnies and Fiona Mullen, a force on the mound for the Bonnies. For the Hilltoppers, Kelsie Price kept the opposition bats quiet and Victoria Mullen closed the game for the Hilltoppers 8-7 victory. Outstanding fielding was on display throughout the game. It was a pleasure to watch the slick fielding of Kaitlyn Nestor, Caitlin Mullen and Kiera Price for the Hilltoppers and Victoria and Isabella Goldberg for the Bonnies. For their outstanding play, Angelina "Gary Carter" Apice of the Bonnies (24; excellent catching and flawless fielding) and Haley O'Toole of the Hilltoppers (game-winning two-

run double and excellent fielding) were awarded game balls by their coaches. Both girls are new to RLL this year. Meanwhile, the girls of the Knights of Columbus Pandas and the Elegante Pizzeria Flippers engaged in a true slugfest! The game ended with a tied score of 18-18 after playing into the two-hour time limit. The Pandas broke the game open in the fifth inning with a grand slam by Noreen George and a two-run homer by Alexandra Caruso, accompanied by overall great base running. Down five in the sixth, the Pandas tried their best with four hits and three walks, but, 5 was their magic number. Both teams played their best, despite missing some veteran players. In Minor Boys, the Wave Publishing Giants and the Henry Myers Plumbing Diamondbacks also played to a tie, 7-7. For the Giants, the pitching was provided by Jack Leary, Luke Wasserman, and Ryan Gallagher. The offense was provided by Anthony Farina, Liam Pye and Nick Taylor. A very tight
defense was led by Hayden Malsy, Daniel Degrechie, Dermot Laffler, and a game-saving catch by Christian Cook. The Diamondbacks offense was led by Matt Bambury, Michael Nestor, Gerard Guglielmo and Billy Benoit. Nolan Dougherty pitched three strong innings in his first start of the season. Solid defense was provided by Paul Burke, Max Coughlin, Nick Coughlin, Matt McDonnell and James Johnson. Another Minor Boys tilt was not so tight as the Mahoney Real Estate Royals had a big day against the Laquila Group Reds. Royals’ hurlers Connor McElhinney (3 IP, 8 Ks), Ben Gressel, Logan Monahan and Jonathan Lazo combined for the shutout. Joseph Esposito (5 RBI) and Gressel (3 RBI), each had a home run and a triple. Lazo, McElhinney, Hunter Gilhuley and Dean Esposito also had multi-hit games. Matthew Schneider is leading the Royals with five walks. Finally, in a Major Boys pitching duel, the Robin Shapiro Realty Mariners edged the Neponsit Realty Giants 3-2.

The Backswing
by Kelley Brooke
By Kelley Brooke
Throughout this golf season we will build your swing brick by brick. In the last article we discussed the foundation of the swing, the setup. This week we will start to build a swing on top of that solid setup foundation, the backswing. There is a lot of confusion about the backswing. Students ask, “Should I swing like Bubba Watson and turn my hips way back on my backswing to get power? Or should I keep my hips really quiet during the backswing like Rory McIlroy? Or should I lift my front foot like Ben Hogan used to do to get a better turn?” The answer is more simple than you think. Thanks to scientific study and biofeedback, the swing is much more of an objective science than it used to be. With the help of biofeedback technology like the K-Vest or the data that we gather from Trackman, we understand the physics of the swing and can firmly give proof
Q B B O Q Y G I L G Y B Y X V
that certain positions are more beneficial than others. We now know that the most efficient backswing is a coiling movement whereas the upper body separates from the lower body, creating tension. Underneath this separation lies a significant amount of power. Rory McIlroy is a testament to the power of separation. Because of his ability to separate his upper body from his lower body, he is able to fire his hips through the ball at 700 degrees

PER SECOND! The centrifugal force of this quick turn generates clubhead speed. The golfer in the picture demonstrates separation perfectly. The player starts his backswing with his shoulders in frame number two. He turns his shoulders and upper center for 30 degrees before his hips begin to turn. In the third frame you will see that the golfer’s hips have started turning. The ratio is now 60 degrees of shoulder turn and 30 de-
grees of hip turn. In the fourth frame, the golfer stops his turn at around 80-85 degrees with his hips at 40 degrees of turn. This separation creates a good amount of tension between the upper and lower body. The golfer feels coiled and ready to fire through the ball. Next week we will discuss what happens in the downswing, but your homework for this week is to practice and create the coil. Remember that the swing is a chain reaction made of links. We must learn the swing in sequential order, perfecting each link one at a time. If you are not coiled with the proper amount of separation, then we cannot uncoil you. Practice with a purpose! Until next week…. Kelley Brooke is the owner of The Golf Channel Academy with Kelley Brooke.
