Sprucing Up 116th By Katie McFadden

The peninsula-wide cleanup has gotten a head start— on Beach 116th Street. On Wednesday, April 21, more than 20 planters along Rockaway Park’s shopping corridor were spruced up ahead of Saturday’s full cleanup. “They look so good,” Liz Hanna, who has been spearheading the effort to fix the planters along Beach 116th Street said.

“It’s a game changer when you turn down the block and see it.” On Wednesday morning, crews from Lisena Garden Center were hard at work cleaning out the garbage-filled planters and planting Alberta Spruce Evergreens in each one, bringing some life and color back to the block. They planted 23 of the small trees in planters on Beach 116th Street and another nine will be fixed up along Rockaway Beach Boulevard. The planting was made possible by $500 donations from Rockaway WISH, the Graybeards and Maureen Walsh and $2,000 raised through fundraising efforts spearheaded by Hanna. Letters will also be sent out to local businesses on the block to help fundraise for solar lights and maintenance of the planters. This planting comes ahead of the peninsula-wide community cleanup set for this Saturday, April 24, which will include Beach 116th Street. Hanna hopes that the fixed up planters will

Before

provide some inspiration ahead of Saturday’s event. “We wanted to do this ahead of the cleanup to show what can be done,” Hanna said. “Hopefully it will put a little pep in everybody’s step and add a little brightness.” And this is just the beginning. Hanna says in the coming weeks, there will be a community planting day in which volunteers will be able to plant some colorful additions around the

After

spruce evergreens. “We’re going to have a day where we put the pretty stuff around them—annuals, perennials—so there will be a splash of color during the season,” Hanna said. Details will be announced at a later time. For those interested in volunteering for Saturday’s cleanup, email Christine James at bringingbackrockaway@gmail.com to see which locations are in need of volunteers.

Short One Virtue I might have Attention Deficit Disorder but I don’t have the patience to get tested. I was filling a coffeemaker with water the other morning and I got bored doing it. I got halfway through filling up the reservoir or whatever they call the water thing on those Keurig machines and just stopped. I was bored to tears. I couldn’t take it. Of course, yes, yes, I know – that would mean I’d have to fill it up again that much sooner. Didn’t matter, doesn’t matter. As the women of Be Well Be Happy tell me, I’m supposed to stay in the moment. Why should I care about having to refill the thing in the near future? I could be walking back to my kitchen table and get hit by a bus. Things are no different at the gas station. I put the hose in the tank and after 30 seconds, I start wondering what’s taking this so long. I say to myself, ah ten gallons is enough, let me get the hell out of here. And off I go. It’s not like I have anything better to do, I just gotta go. Insane as that might sound, it’s better than waiting for the gas pump timer to kick in. A lot of pumps have this control device, maybe to stop gas from splashing out as it nears capacity, so the last 30 cents or two cups of gas take about a day and a half. I’m guessing you chill people don’t know what I’m talking about. But the people who believe you should live life to the fullest know this is a soul crushing, time sucking experience that makes

you seethe. The gas pump is stealing your life. You want to carpe the whole damn diem and the gas pump is playing Chinese water torture. You might even risk eye contact and look around for others who are also simmering as the pump holds you hostage. You restless types know what I’m talking about, though you’ve probably stopped reading by now. I know, I know. Good column but after the first sentence you’re like, wrap it up already. Which I deserve. If someone is taking too long telling a story, I’m the first one to tell them to land the plane. Someone told me I don’t have ADD, I’m just impatient. Well, I have whatever makes you stop mid pee. Yea, if I’m at the toilet too long I’ll just stop and come back later. That might be Too Much Information but at least I did it quickly. If I’m going to a fast food place, I first glance inside because if there’s no line at the counter, I’m going inside instead of the drive through. It’s faster. I don’t care about the toll. If I’m heading west on the Belt, I’ll take the Marine Parkway Bridge rather than the Cross Bay because it’s 90 seconds faster to home. You starting to get why I never golf? On a beautiful summer day, I can sit on the beach. Tied down. With gurney straps. But then I’d have to tell you about my claustrophobia. I gotta go.

Earth Day Origins in New York City Today, Thursday, April 22 is Earth Day but many celebrate and honor Mother Earth throughout the month. For some background information, NYC Parks provides this chronology: Earth Day began in 1970 as a way to raise awareness about environmental issues. Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, and Denis Hayes, a young environmentalist, joined to organize events across the country and "shake things up." Following that first Earth Day, which was celebrated by 20 million people across the country, President Richard Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency. For the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, thousands participated in various sanctioned events in New York City. Fifth Avenue was closed to traffic from Union Square Park to Central Park, and 14th Street between 3rd and 7th Avenues was transformed into an "ecological carnival." Union Square Park served as

the focus of numerous Earth Day observances and teach-ins throughout the metropolitan region. Over the day, some 100,000 people were estimated to have thronged to the square in one of the largest demonstrations there since the socialist rallies of the 1930s. The empty streets resulted in at least one picnic spread at the intersection of 57th Street and Fifth Avenue, and Mayor

John V. Lindsay repeated the idea during the summer of 1970 when he closed Fifth Avenue to traffic for four successive weekends. The City also banned cars for the day in Central Park in Manhattan, Brooklyn's Prospect Park, Forest Park in Queens, and Silver Lake Park in Staten Island. Earth Day became a global event in 1990; the event has been celebrated in earnest with tours,

events, and volunteer opportunities at parks across the city since 2000. For NYC Parks, Earth Day is a chance to honor our green spaces and how we care for them, and to raise awareness about how we are working to shape a greener future for our city. Arbor Day, celebrated on the last Friday in April, dates to 1872 when it is said that over one million trees were planted in Nebraska. Julius Sterling Morton, originally from upstate New York then living in Nebraska, was instrumental in establishing the day. New York State has been celebrating Arbor Day since 1888, and Arbor Day has been celebrated at NYC Parks for years. In 1906, Arbor Day festivities were held in playgrounds, "thereby inculcating a true love for nature," according to the 1906 Annual Report. Earth Day and Arbor Day events are scheduled through the end of April. Visit NYC Parks for more info: https://on.nyc.gov/3ejVNU1

Skate Safe. Wear a Helmet. By Daniel Lynch

Skateboarding can be a fun activity, but it’s even better when doing it safely. Christine Scheppa is hoping to share the importance of wearing a helmet while skateboarding, during an event in collaboration with Ernie Herrera, owner of GrindTime Skateshop located at 90-20 Rockaway Beach Boulevard next month. Scheppa knows firsthand how vital a helmet can be. In 2016, Scheppa’s son, Vinny, fell off his skateboard. According to Scheppa, “he was not wearing a

Vinny and Christine Scheppa helmet and suffered a traumatic brain injury, leaving him in a minimally conscious state.” Undergoing surgeries, rehabilitation and 24/7 care, Vinny lived with his traumatic brain injury for five years. In February, on Ash Wednesday, he died as a result of his injuries. Scheppa hopes to keep other families from going through what hers has had to endure. On Sunday, May 23, she’s teaming up with GrindTime Skateshop

to hold a special event to raise awareness for brain injuries and the importance of wearing a helmet while skateboarding. Following Vinny’s accident, Scheppa, a registered nurse from Garden City, not only became a vital caretaker for her son, but an advocate for traumatic brain injury awareness. She has led the charge to push for a change in state law that would help qualified family members provide nursing ser-

vices to their loved ones and be reimbursed at a nursing rate. The Vincent Scheppa Bill, named for her son, passed the Senate, and is continuing to go under review by the state legislature. In the meantime, she is continuing to spread awareness. As Herrerra himself has raised funds for brain injury awareness and donated it to the Brain Injury Association of NY, Scheppa knew GrindTime Skateshop would be on board for this mission. “He is equally as passionate about the importance of wearing a helmet to prevent brain injuries,” Scheppa said. At the event next month, she says, “Our family will be distributing some helmets to children at this event to help keep them safe. Our goal is to save lives!” On May 23, all are welcome to head to GrindTime starting at 12 p.m. to honor Vinny, learn the importance of wearing safety equipment while skateboarding, and take home a helmet of their own.

He posted this on Facebook last week: “The COVID pandemic has affected people in different ways. I regret to say that I developed a drinking problem. What used to be mainly a social activity, and a way to cope with stress, has now become too frequent and self-destructive. After talking about this with my family and friends, I have decided to finally quit and get sober. I am not embarrassed or ashamed in anyway to admit that I

abused alcohol for far too long. I am ready to move on with my life so that I can be a better father, friend and public servant. I know this will not be easy for me and ask for your prayers and support. Thank you!” ***** Tuesday's West Hempstead Shop and Shop shooting hits closer to home. According to Lew Simon, Ray Wishropp, a former Far Rockaway resident, was killed in the shooting. He leaves behind seven children. Aram, the former manager of the Rockaway Park Stop and Shop, was also shot and is recovering. Our thoughts are with their families. The suspect was apprehended. ***** Rockaway author (and community advocate) Dan Brown will be promoting his book, The Sometimes Why at Avoid the Day bookstore on Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 99th Street at 5:30 p.m. this Saturday. Brother Matthew Scholarship Fund AT NAZARETH REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Alumni and Friends of Nazareth Regional High School have recently established a new scholarship fund in honor of Brother Matthew Burke who passed away peacefully in November 2020. Nazareth is a Catholic college preparatory high school located in Brooklyn and sponsored by the Xaverian Brothers. Brother Matthew was assigned to Nazareth upon its opening in 1962. He was appointed Deputy Principal in 1967 and then served as Principal from 1969 to 1975. He was a beloved teacher, mentor and yes, a strict disciplinarian. His charisma was undeniable. He always cared for and listened to Nazareth students, parents, teachers and staff. Many students from Rockaway attended the Brooklyn school while Brother Matthew was principal. Brother Matthew provided the initial leadership and values at Nazareth that established “a rigorous academic environment where students (can) develop a life-long intellectual curiosity which empowers them to think independently in an ever-changing global community.” His heart was always at Nazareth. He was very much involved in the life of the school even after his role as Principal had ended, including serving on the Board of Trustees in his later years. Today, Brother Matthew’s legacy continues. The mission at Nazareth remains the

same: to educate the entire child - spiritually, intellectually, and socially. Each student is challenged to maximize his or her potential and special talents, offering up to 60 college credits and various after-school activities. Nazareth teaches respect, community service, and how to succeed. The building blocks of character are nurtured and advanced, such as trust, humility, compassion, confidence and leadership. 100% of students graduate with 98% college bound. In his deserving memory, Nazareth Regional High School has formalized the Brother Matthew Burke Scholarship Fund. Its objective is to build bridges into the future for as many deserving students as possible, for “Building Bridges After Nazareth.” The goal is to raise $25,000 annually, to award a minimum of two (2) scholarships to qualifying Juniors. The intent is to help defray tuition costs for their Senior year and, when possible, to also provide a small percentage of the assets each year towards helping the school with improvement projects that will benefit all students. The primary reason for selecting Juniors is to support and recognize students that have clearly and consistently displayed the values and principles that Brother Matthew would have supported; and to help them get “a leg

up” towards their next steps after Nazareth. Criteria for selecting recipients is based on objective and subjective standards. Recipients will demonstrate not only scholastic excellence, but care of community, faith and respect of others through their deeds. This is an Annual Scholarship fund open to donations by all. The Fund started in January 2021 and, thanks to the generosity of many individuals from the graduating classes of 1966-1977, it is off to a solid start. Administration of the Fund is being maintained by the School’s staff, but it is being managed by members of the Class of 1973. The committee includes Denis Wuestman, Mike DiFede, Gerry Ferrante, Bob Liodice, and Jesus ‘Gee’ Linares. (If you were wondering, Brother Matthew made it

‘official”; he named Gee as our “Jesus of Nazareth”). We’ve all heard the often-used term “pay it forward.” In this case, we plan to do just that ---- to honor how much Brother Matthew and his leadership at Nazareth has influenced our lives and success. The committee’s message is simply: “Let’s pay it forward to the next generation to extend Brother Matthew’s legacy --so that a few others may carry the experience of Nazareth into the next part of their lives. Think of the impact WE could have!” If you would like to donate to the Scholarship Fund, you can do so at the Brother Matthew Burke Scholarship Fund on Nazareth's website (https:// n a z a re t h r h s. o r g / g i v i n g / ) . Contributions are tax deductible. And all annual donors will receive regular status reports. Thank you.

Free Surf Day Hits The Waves surfing, then you are always going to fight to keep the ocean healthy and safe.” Along with Mike Reinhardt of Locals Surf School, each surf school also acknowledged their seasoned staffers, who were there to give hands-on guidance once participants made their way into the water. Dispatched in small groups, each had an instructor to guide them as they paddled out, then popped up and then stood on the board, riding the waves as they came back in. The wetsuits came in handy with water temperatures in the 40s as each novice surfer went out again and again, each time doing a little better cruising back to shore. All really started to get the hang of it, and there was definitely a sense of excitement and accomplishment as the afternoon went on. One young surfer summed it up best as she skipped out of the ocean. “I did it,” she shouted! Photos by Dan Guarino.

The sun was bright, the wind was brisk and the waves were rolling as about 14 youngsters hit the water off Beach 69th Street for Rockaway’s Annual Free Surf Day. Held on Tuesday, April 20, for kids ages 8-14, the afternoon was organized and sponsored by Skudin Surf, Locals, and New York Surf School, in partnership with NYC Parks. Instructors from all three local surf schools were there to take the young participants through everything from how to put on a wet suit to water safety, how to stand up on and handle a surfboard, and finally take them out into the water in hopes of catching some waves. Boards and wet suits were provided by each school. Like others on the beach, for Sophia Szymankiewicz, age 12, it was her first time surfing. “I’m a big swimmer,” she said, “I swam since I was four. I love the water. I think getting my balance on the board (though) will be challenging. But I think I will really enjoy surfing.” Frank Cullen of New York Surf School commented, “This is our third year doing this,” incorporating a pre-lesson beach cleanup in previous years. “We do this because surfing is such an amazing thing, and we’re really blessed to give back, to share that appreciation of it,” Cullen said. “The greatest thing is to be out riding the waves. The second greatest thing is teaching someone how to do it.”

Will Skudin, whose family has run a surf school for generations, explained, “When you’re surfing, you’re so in the moment, so focused, that the ocean washes everything else away.” Besides changing lives, building fitness, concentration and confidence, Skudin noted one other reason to introduce young people to the ocean through events like this. “You always fight for what you love, he said. “If you love

Rockaway Leads Actions for Justice

Just ahead of the guilty-onall counts verdict for Officer Derek Chauvin in the killing of George Floyd, groups gathered around Rockaway to demand justice not only for Floyd, but all involved in police shootings, including the recent shootings of Daunte Wright and Adam Toledo. On Saturday, April 17, the Black Surfing Association spearheaded another paddle out and local organizations led a peaceful march along the boardwalk for these causes. The morning began with a paddle out organized by Lou Harris of the East Coast Black Surfing Association. This was one of several paddle outs that Harris has organized over the past year for George Floyd and others in solidarity with

the Black Lives Matter movement. Dozens of surfers turned out on Saturday on Beach 91st Street for a nine minute and 29-second paddle out, the length of the video showing Officer Chauvin with his knee on George Floyd’s neck last year, to honor Floyd’s life, but with the latest killings of Daunte Wright and Adam Toledo, the paddle out carried a deeper purpose of demanding justice for all. Later that morning, Rockaway Revolution, the BLM Cau- Your Anti-Racist Neighbors gress led a march to “demand cus, the Laru Beya Collective, and Rockaway Women for Pro- and end to state-sanctioned murder” in honor of Daunte Wright and Adam Toledo, both shot and killed by police in the past month. Dozens gathered on bike and foot for the peaceful march that went from Beach 75th to Beach 105th on the boardwalk. New York City mayoral candidate Dianne Morales also came out for the event to show her support. On Tuesday, April 20, some justice was served as Chauvin was convicted on all three charges in the murder of Floyd.

Good News, Too During the last year, many of us have realized that the news media is sensationalized. I think we always knew that it was, but the events of the last year have really brought it out. I remember as a young elementary school student learning about yellow journalism, and I feel that has truly taken hold in our mainstream news media. Not all news publications have great covers such as “Smells Like Summer” or “April Fools: No Joke Connolly’s to Reopen!” I have taken to Twitter quite often to see news stories not on the mainstream media. Last

week while scrolling through Twitter I saw a few great local news stories. Now I know the local affiliates rarely come down to our neck of the woods, but they definitely will not come for a positive news story. The local news only seems to come when a young swimmer has tragically drowned or something else that would put Rockaway and the surrounding areas in a negative light. For those of you who read my column, you may have noticed I have been missing in action for a while. I truly had writer’s block. I usually get ideas from society, and the only

thing happening in society was masks and Covid. Now I am inspired to write a series of good news columns! Did you know that our local police departments, the 100th and the 101st Precincts have been engaging in positive community service outreach? The 100th Precinct has been running a chess club each Thursday at 4 p.m. at the precinct on Beach 94th Street. Captain Carlos Fabara is shown in the pictures playing chess with young players. The caption on their Twitter feed says that young people can also come and learn the game of chess. What a fabulous story! With many schools not open and students remote, this is a great thing for children to get out of the house and learn a great game. It also is a fabulous way for young people to get to know their local law enforcement. Also, this past weekend, both the 100th and the 101st Precincts participated in a graffiti clean-up. Not only did they sponsor it, they even asked for suggestions of where graffi-

The Rockaway Times ti needed to be cleaned up in the area! The pictures on Twitter seemed to show this was a great event. The 101st Precinct also is sponsoring “Pop up with a Cop” and Officers Conti and Castellano played games and served food to the members of the community. The pictures also looked as if the officers had food pantry items that people were able to bring home. The Twitter post said, “Until next week.” Check out both the 100th and 101st Twitter feeds for more information. And if you would like to participate in another clean-up please check out community activists: Christina James, Mike Scala, Torey Schnupp, John Cori and their committee “Bringing Back Rockaway.” They are planning a community clean-up on Saturday, April 24 (which we desperately need.) For more information email: bringingbackrockaway@ gmail.com. Have a good week everyone. Send me positive news ideas: MrsHanning308@gmail.com.

Kate and Seamus Hope to Adopt By Katie McFadden

A local couple is hoping to adopt. And with social media and the help of friends and family, they’re hoping to spread the message to find an expectant mother who is considering adoption and looking for a good home for her baby. After meeting through work ten years ago in Boston, Kate and Seamus hit it off. In September 2016, they tied the knot and the following year, they bought a house and moved to Roxbury to be closer to Kate’s family in Rockaway, where she grew up. They began trying to start a family of their own, but unfortunately found that it wasn’t in the cards. “After going through several years of fertility treatments, we were unsuccessful. After a lot of soul searching and discussion, we decided to discontinue that process,” Kate said. Instead, they decided to put their efforts toward adopting a newborn. “That was the right path for us,” she said. After extensive research and consulting with other couples, Kate and Seamus realized an independent adoption would work best for them. Rather than going through an adoption agency, an independent adoption gives potential parents the opportunity to directly connect with a parent or expectant mother who is looking for a home for their child, with the help of an adoption lawyer. “We felt this was the right path for us. It can go a lot of ways, but it tends to be quicker,” Kate said. “With the independent process, we have a high likelihood of meeting the birthmother and getting to know her and we thought that was important,” Seamus added. That means the hard part would be up to them—finding an expectant mother. At the beginning of the year, they began their journey, finding an adoption attorney that could help with the legal aspects of the process, and on St. Patrick’s Day, they introduced themselves and their intentions to the world, launching their efforts through social media and a website, something that has be-

come common for independent adoptions in the digital age. And so began the marketing of Kate and Seamus. In daily social media posts, the couple shares a glimpse of their life, showing who they are and why they would make great parents. “With this whole process, you feel very vulnerable. You’re putting your whole life out there, not just for expectant mother, but for the whole world to see,” Kate said. A glimpse of their social media accounts shows who they are. Kate, 34, and Seamus, 37, live in a home near the bay in Roxbury. Both working remotely, Kate is an employee benefits consultant, Seamus is an InsurTech consultant. Kate loves to cook. They both love to travel and spend time outdoors. They recently adopted a rescue dog, a pointer from Georgia named Nellie, who loves to go on hikes with them at the nearby park and walks on the beach. Family game nights and theme parties with costumes are a regular occurrence. Seamus, who spent time teaching underprivileged kids how to ski in Boston, and Kate, a former lifeguard, are ready to show a potential child the best of both worlds. “We’re definitely looking forward to getting my own skier and I’m sure Katie is interested to have her own lifeguard on the beach,” Seamus said. And most importantly, family is everything. They’re just hoping to expand theirs by welcoming a newborn into their life. Both of their parents are eagerly awaiting the arrival of

is born, she decides she doesn’t want to do adoption anymore. That is her right to change her mind, but then it stops for us. We would be heartbroken. This kind of thing is not unheard of, but it does happen,” she said. But they’re hoping for the best. And their efforts to get the word out there have been working. The couple says they’ve been having conversations with some mothers. While those leads haven’t worked out yet, they know the process requires patience. “We’re not expecting for this to happen overnight. We’re in this for the long-haul their first grandchild, which and know it can take a lot of would be surrounded by a sup- time,” Kate said. From their report system of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. The couple says that support system has made this vulnerable process of putting themselves out there, a bit easier. From friends and family, to even local organizations like Rockaway WISH and The Graybeards, which have shared their posts on social media, the couple says they’ve been blown away by those who have reached out to offer help and advice “It’s been really nice to hear from so many people who have been adopted or have adopted,” they said. “We’re doing it this way so we can reach search, an independent adopan expectant mother ourselves tion process could take about and it gives our friends, fami- one to two years to be successly and neighbors and anyone ful. “We’re keeping the faith,” a chance to help. Best Dads Dear Editor: (re: Lazer Lou’s 4/8/22 column) As I read anything, my mind races forward; it’s something I can't rein in. Lou, as I was reading your recent column regarding your father, I was already composing a letter to the editor (I do this in my mind all the time but rarely mail them). How could your father be the best of all time when my father was that guy? As I read on and you related the loss of your Dad, I slowed down. Irish, German, Italian, they all shared the same experiences now shared by people from other parts of the world. My father came here a year after your father, was born and

spent his whole life between the Bronx and eventually, Rockaway. Death is to be expected. But even knowing that, when my Dad passed away in 1989 at 82 years, I grieved. I still grieve. Right after my father passed, my mother asked me what time it was. I responded, "after midnight" and she breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed that by passing after midnight on July 31, it was as if my Mom had her husband for another month, so that in hindsight, my father passed in August not July and thus lived longer. We play these things in our heads. As I was reading your article, I thought with tongue in cheek how I would respond to your idea of your father being the best. He was the best, as was mine. I have a nice uniform that I will probably be buried in but my only request to my wife is that the tee shirt that I wear under that uniform is the one that my kids gave me years ago, the one that says in crayon "world's best Dad.” I'm sure your father was the

RISE Virtual Art Workshop with Daris Garnes By Liam Lachner

On Saturday, April 10, the Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity (RISE) organized its first ever Virtual Art Workshop led by Daris Garnes. Thanks to a grant that RISE received through the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs’ Building Community Capacity Initiative, we have been commissioned to host a series of virtual art workshops for our community. RISE’s purpose for these workshops is to provide the community with a fun way to interact with one another virtually, while also teaching them how to create something special during these difficult times. Daris Garnes is a Rockaway resident and visual artist. She uses her love of photography, painting and colored pencils to empower herself and others. Daris has been part of the RISE family for a while now. When she is not busy, you can

always find her participating in one of our community programs or events. And if we ever need a hand, Daris is the first person to volunteer her time. Daris' goal for this workshop was to lead participants on a creative and relaxing journey through the practices of coloring, shading, stretching, and breathing. The workshop had a great turnout, beginning with everyone introducing themselves, and then Daris took us through some mindfulness techniques. Next, Daris led everyone through a

shading demonstration, and afterwards, we were ready to begin coloring our own drawings. At the end, we presented our finished products to the group and Daris ended the workshop with a short dance party. Everyone enjoyed the workshop, they all expressed what a fun experience this was and what a nice relaxing way to kick off a Saturday. I would like to thank all of the community members who were able to attend and a special thanks to Daris Garnes for leading us on her creative journey.

This is only the beginning of the Virtual Art Workshop Series that RISE plans on offering to the community! Our next workshop will be hosted by Jennifer Jones, and it is taking place on Saturday, April 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Zoom. Jennifer is a Far Rockaway resident and a lifelong New Yorker, and she also teaches Art History at Westchester Community College and Discovering the Arts at Purchase College. In her workshop, participants will be creating two different types of sculptures using recycled cardboard boxes. If you have any questions or would like to learn more information about RISE’s Virtual Art Workshop Series, please visit our website at riserockaway.org/ events. Thank you for your interest in RISE and please stay tuned for our next Virtual Art Workshop, there will be more to come! (Liam Lachner is the Community Outreach Coordinator and NYC Civic Corps Member)

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

The Way It Was Literary classics, for example works by authors like Mark Twain and Robert Louis Stevenson, often give us a glimpse of medical care as it was many years ago. Take Robert Frost’s 1916 poem “Out, Out- .” It describes the traumatic death of a young boy in a farming accident. It is based on a real-life tragedy; an article from the Littleton New Hampshire Courier published in March 1910 provides the background: Raymond Tracy Fitzgerald…died…as a result of an accident by which one of his hands was badly hurt in a sawing machine. The young man…accidently hit a loose pulley, caus-

ing the saw to descend upon his hand, cutting and lacerating it badly. Raymond was taken into the house and a physician was immediately summoned, but he died very suddenly from the effects of shock, which produced heart failure. For Frost, the tragedy was personal as the boy’s father owned a hotel where he spent several summers, and their children played together. The poem evokes a sense of tragedy and describes the idyllic rural scene and majestic mountains. Frost changes the saw from a manual drag saw to a noisy buzz saw, which violently cuts through the

mountains’ silent beauty. In the poem, the boy instinctively elevates his hand to reduce the flow of blood. But the doctor, “when he comes,” can do little. The title draws on Macbeth’s despairing cry “Out, out brief candle.” The poem describes the boy’s final moments; “Little-less-nothing! and that ended it.” The poem must be understood against a background in which childhood death was commonplace. Even as he wrote it, Frost was still mourning the death of his three-year-old son from cholera. Adults and even children became immune to the harsh realities of life back then: “…And they, since they Were not the one dead, turned to their affairs.” The final two lines of the poem remind the reader that while time had stopped for the boy, it continued inexorably for those around him. In fact, the passing of time is a central theme of the poem, along with the sense of loss and grief that permeate the poem. Due to child labor laws, such a traumatic death of a child is

The Rockaway Times thankfully rare today. Frost acknowledges the reality of child labor back then; “…big boy, Doing a man’s work, though a child at heart.” In addition, advances in trauma care since Frost’s time mean that the prognosis is greatly improved, even for catastrophic injuries. Today, a similar patient would benefit from the application of a tourniquet, a rapid EMS transport, prehospital resuscitation, and a rapid surgical or trauma team evaluation and response. The poem gives today’s reader the opportunity to reflect on the benefits of these medical advances, but also reminds the reader that when treating traumatic injuries, time is of the essence. “Don’t let him cut my hand off ” cries the boy, but it is too late. By the time the doctor arrives, “the hand was gone already.” Frost’s beautiful but distressing poem reminds us what is at stake in preventing traumatic injury, if only for future generations. Time to Renew As we slowly roll forward into the spring, we are inspired to renew our bodies and spirits. Clean living leads to positive energy and overall better health. From what I understand, many people developed some bad habits during the pandemic. So perhaps you could decide to change some of the things that truly do not serve you. Over-eating, over-drinking, lack of sleep, fear-based thoughts are all detrimental to your well-being. Making conscious decisions to develop good habits will come

Page 29

THURSDAY, APRIL 22, 2021

with time and discipline. Let the fun begin as you embark on the journey to better health. Food is medicine. Healthy choices of fruits and vegetables are nourishing for your body. With good food you will begin to have positive energy and feel lighter. Our internal system loves clean food. Stay away from sugar and processed foods. Look at ingredients to see how much sugar is added. You will be surprised at some of the foods containing too much sugar. Be aware of your caffeine intake. How

do you feel when you wake up? Rested or exhausted? Experience has taught me if I want more vitality in my life then changing what I eat and drink will give me renewed energy. Alcohol can wreak havoc in your body and mind. Sleep will more than likely be interrupted. The brain will be foggy and lethargic. Physically, you will be less motivated to exercise and eat healthy. We know how important the brain is to our emotional and physical state of being. Meditation helps to clear the pathways so we can become more aware of what we are doing. Whenever I close my eyes, focus on my breath and feel for sensations within, I become mindful of my inner world. Returning to the outer world, I am able to make better decisions for myself. We are similar to the earth who loves clean water, fresh air and good food. Breath work helps to clear the mind and connect to your essence. We are born with a certain amount of breaths. Why waste even a moment that

is not serving you? The quality of breathing can help to alleviate many aliments. If breathing is not easily accessible to you, then you can focus on a mantra or beautiful sounds of the birds. I have worked with students who have trouble with the breath so we approach the practice of calming the nervous system by bringing awareness through another sense. Be open and you will receive the benefits of this simple practice called mindfulness. It is truly the gateway to living with ease. Fear causes separation from the world. Showing up for life is what we were meant to do. Find your courage to live your life fully. Choose love over fear. When you wake up, be grateful for the gift of the day. Another day to start fresh with good intentions. Today my intention was to be compassionate to all I meet. Everyone is fighting a battle and we could all use some kindness. Small acts of kindness go a long way. May you be safe, may you be happy, may you be healthy and may you live with ease.

LWA Volleyball Achieves The Lawrence Woodmere Academy Lady Tigers Volleyball team served up their biggest victory of the year in early April. That victory was not a game result. Their biggest achievement was completing a full season during a worldwide pandemic. Coach Howard Mo and the Lady Tigers fought with resilience in every game but unfortunately just missed out on the playoffs. Results were not something we strived for this season. Getting 12 girls

together during a Covid season was an accomplishment in itself. The roster was made up of students from 7th to 12th grade. It was a fantastic experience for everyone involved. While we didn't have a winning season, this is going to make us strive to be better. LWA has completed two seasons during these very difficult times (basketball and volleyball) but we are very excited for the fall to begin and are excited to have the return of soccer, too.

Wrestle Talk CAN REGIONAL PROMOTIONS FLOURISH AGAIN? By Eric Jayden

During 1965 and 1989, Regional Wrestling Promotions flourished throughout the United States. Companies like the NWA, AWA, USWA and the WWF all had specific regions throughout the United States which they exclusively operated in. Most promotions work together and exchange pro wrestling talent but they never ran shows in each other's territories. This gave wrestling fans many more options to choose from and it also gave wrestlers the opportunity to work different areas and gain more income. Now fast-forward to the present, we currently have three predominantly large promotions operating which are World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), All Elite Wrestling (AEW), Impact Wrestling (ICW). Now with the current

state of the pandemic, wrestling has been on pause not only in the United States but throughout the world. This has severely limited the viewing options for wrestling fans and has reduced the opportunities for pro wrestlers to obtain work. But there is opportunity there once the world returns to the new norm. This could be an excellent opportunity for smaller promotions to start operating at a regional level and start giving the fans more options and creating more opportunities for pro wrestlers to be seen and grow in their careers. Imagine having the opportunity to watch various wrestling promotions throughout the United States on television. The opportunity to watch different wrestlers, different wrestling styles and wrestling will no longer be a monopoly to the exclusive few. Can Regional Wrestling Promotions flour-

ish again? I say they can, and I would definitely love to see it. The question of the week comes from Angel H. in Broad Channel and he asked, "When will wrestling return back to normal? Also, I read your column every week and enjoy it very much!" Thank you, Angel, and I'm glad you enjoy the column. To answer your question, wrestling is slowly returning back with this past Wrestle-

Mania allowing fans to attend live. But I see the progress being very slow before wrestling returns back to big arenas. So, patience my friend, eventually as the world starts to open up, we will see more live shows. Keep sending those questions into eavil183@yahoo.com. You can follow me on Instagram @ badguysexiness and on Twitter @followthebadguy. Have a great week!
