Community to Mark Centennial of the First Transatlantic Flight By Katie McFadden

Every day, the shadows of hundreds of airplanes appear on the sand outside our homes. It happens so often, that most aren’t phased, except by the occasional sound or a plane that seems a little too close. However, a century ago, the shadow of one plane caught the attention of many, but today, that plane’s story remains in the shadows of history. When many are asked who was the first to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, the answer is none other than Charles Lindbergh. Even a quick Google search results in his name on top. But he wasn’t. Eight years prior to Lindbergh’s first transatlantic solo flight, five members of the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard’s first pilot earned bragging rights as the first to cross the Atlantic by plane—and that trip began in Rockaway. The details of U.S. NAVY Seaplane Division One’s journey to become the first to make the

trek across the ocean was detailed daily on the front pages of various newspapers in 1919. Yet its impact is seemingly lost in history and unknown to many, including those who live in the place where it all began. For the past two years, local Robby Schwach of Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office, has spearheaded an effort to not only resurrect that history, but celebrate it, in anticipation of the 100th anniversary of when that historic trip took place—May 8, 1919. Next month, people will remember the NC-4, the U.S. Navy seaplane that completed the trip, and the others that attempted it, NC-1 and NC-3, in a month-long exhibition and a ceremony on the actual an-

niversary of the flight’s beginnings at the place where it all began, one hundred years later. According to Schwach, the planes used in the effort, were first designed during WWI. The U.S. Navy was interested in an aircraft that could carry men and equipment across the ocean to patrol for submarines, so they turned to Glenn Curtiss, founder of the U.S. aircraft industry, to take on the task. The Navy contracted Curtiss to make four of such planes to be used in the war effort, but the war soon came to an end. However, Jack Towers, head of the Naval Aviation Corps at the time, decided the planes still served an important purpose. At the time, the race to be the first to cross the ocean was on, with several countries in Europe looking to attempt it. Towers convinced his superior officers to allow him to use the planes so that the United States could claim that title as the first to make the trip. Towers got permis-

sion and a plan was put in motion to launch the planes in May 1919. The planes were first assembled in Garden City, but with a Naval Air Station available on the Rockaway peninsula, launching seaplanes from a place surrounded by water made sense. The pieces of the new aviation technology had to be brought to the peninsula by something more behind in the times—horse-drawn carriages. At one point, the NC-2 was damaged, so a decision was made to cannibalize the plane for parts to use for the other planes. The planes were rebuilt and tested in Rockaway. Routes were mapped out and eventually it was determined that the best bet would be for the plane to fly to Lisbon, Portugal, with stops along the way that included Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and the Azores to break up long flying times. a fleet of about 40 Naval ships were positioned about every 50 miles to serve as markers and points for the planes to stop to refuel or have repairs done. After a few hiccups that included high winds and even a fire in one of the hangars for the planes at the Rockaway Naval Air Station, the conditions were finally right for the three planes, the NC-1, NC-3 and NC-4 to take off for their journey, each with six crewmembers on board. On the morning of May 8, 1919, the planes left their hangars and were lowered into Jamaica Bay. At 10 a.m. that morning, about 1,200 naval officers, family members of the crew and surely locals, gathered to watch the historic moment as the three planes lifted out of the water and began their transatlantic journey. The trip was anything but simple. The NC-4 had to make an early stop in Massachusetts for a few days and the NC-1 and

THURSDAY, APRIL 25, 2019 NC-3 ran into their own problems, including poor weather and mechanical issues. After a 19-day journey, the NC-4 was the one to complete the trip to Lisbon on May 27, 1919, making it the first ever successful transatlantic flight. With such a historic event having ties to his hometown, Schwach was determined to keep the memory of the first real transatlantic flight alive. “So many people don’t remember this happened and it bothered me that nobody knew about it. My goal is to bring the flight back out of history’s shadow, to honor the contributions of those who put it together and the 18 crew members; 17 Navy and the first Coast Guard pilot, Elmer Stone. When people think of historic events in Rockaway, people think of Sandy or the crash of Flight 587, but this was probably one of the most historic events in aviation history and the planning, testing and takeoff for the flight happened right here in Rockaway,” Schwach said. With the help of the City

Council, the Queens Historical Society and the Rockaway Artists Alliance, Schwach is spearheading a few events to mark the 100th anniversary of this historic flight. On Wednesday, May 8, at 10 a.m., the same date and time the planes left in 1919, a ceremony will be held to mark the occasion at the Coast Guard station at Riis Landing. All are encouraged to arrive at around 9:30 a.m. The ceremony will include ranking members from both the Coast Guard and Navy, family members of the crew coming from around the country, an NYPD and Coast Guard flyover, an FDNY boat water display, performances by local school groups and more. The ceremony will culminate with the unveiling of the new name for the intersection of Beach 169th and Rockaway Point Blvd.—U.S. Navy Seaplane Division One Way. Schwach hopes that the new road sign will keep the memory of the event alive beyond the anniversary. Another element will aim to

educate people about the deep history surrounding the event and the people that were involved. From May 3 through June 2, there will be a special exhibit about the transatlantic flight at the RAA’s T7 Gallery in Fort Tilden. The exhibit will include informational storyboards explaining what happened, as well as photo slideshows, videos and even a small model of the NC-4 plane (The real one can be seen at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Fl., which is having its own centennial celebration for the flight). The Rockaway exhibit will be open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. “In Rockaway, we see planes going over and think nothing of it. There are hundreds of transatlantic flights every day from JFK and we take for granted that the very first one took off from Rockaway,” Schwach said. As the community marks the 100th anniversary, he hopes that more will learn that a plane from Rockaway was first.

Data Breach Impacts St. John’s Patients Did you receive a letter from St. John’s Episcopal Hospital regarding a data breach? If you’ve ever utilized the hospital, or one of its satellite locations, it’s likely that you did. With so many receiving the letter, including those who haven’t utilized the hospital in decades, some suspected it may be a scam, but the breach is very real. The letter was sent to anyone who has ever utilized the hospital or one of its sister locations such as the Family Practice on Beach 129th, to warn patients that their personal information may have been compromised. The letter, posted on the St. John's website, read, “Episcopal Health Services recently discovered an incident that may affect the security of personal information of certain current and former patients. We take this incident very seriously and the confidentiality, privacy, and security of our information is one of our highest priorities.” The letter detailed the incident, saying, “On September 18, 2018, Episcopal Health Services became aware of suspicious activity

in employee email accounts. We immediately began an investigation to determine what happened and what information may have been affected. With the assistance of third-party forensic investigators, we determined that certain employee email accounts were subject to unauthorized access between August 28, 2018 and October 5, 2018. These email accounts were then reviewed to determine whether they contained any protected health or personal information. On November 1, 2018, Episcopal Health Services determined that the accounts subject to unauthorized access contained protected health information of certain individuals. The types of information contained within the potentially impacted emails are: Social Security number, date of birth, financial account information, medical history information, prescription information, medical record number, treatment or diagnosis information, and health insurance information or policy number. The types of information var-

ied by individual.” Some residents received a slightly different letter saying that only medical information was shared, with no mention of social security information. The letter added that the hospital group did not know whether or not any of the leaked information was misused. St. John’s says it has taken action in response to the discovery. “As part of our incident response, we changed the log-in credentials for all employee email accounts to prevent further unauthorized access. Since then, we have continued ongoing efforts to enhance security controls and to implement additional controls to help protect employee email accounts from unauthorized access,” the letter read. As for patients who may have been affected, the letter says, “We are also notifying and offering 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring to potentially affected individuals so that they may take further steps to best protect their personal information, should they feel it is appropriate to do so. We are also notifying any required fed-

eral and state regulators.” Those affected should keep an eye out for any instances of identity theft or fraud. The letter advises people to keep track of their accounts. “You should review your account statements or your loved ones’ account statements for suspicious activity. If you see any unauthorized charges, promptly contact the bank or credit card company. We also recommend reviewing your credit report for inquiries from companies that you have not contacted, accounts you did not open and debts on your accounts that you cannot explain.” Some may also want to consider placing a security freeze on their credit report. The letter lists various agencies to call for those who wish to pursue this. Those who actually experience idenity theft are advised to report it to law enforcement at the Federal Trade Commission at 1-877-IDTHEFT (1- 877-438-4338). Other questions regarding the incident should be directed to 1-866-7754209, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This annual fundraiser not only gives bragging rights to the best chefs in town, but important funds for the 100th Precinct Council so that they can continue to do the great work they do for the community, including hosting events such as Night Out Against Crime. For each contest, local restaurants, city agencies like FDNY and EMS, organizations and even individuals from all over the peninsula, submit entries for the event. Last year, for the second year in a row, Jessica Luina of Councilman Donovan Richards’ office earned her Chili Queen crown by dishing out the best bowl. For the first time, macaroni and cheese was also brought into the mix and Last Stop Gourmet Shop proved that they do the classic right. This year, the competi-

Judges will have to sample more than 25 chili dishes and nearly 15 macaroni and cheese dishes to pick the winners. This year, that tough job goes to Edwin Williams of The Heart of Rockaway, 100th Precinct Detective Anthony Byrd and The Wave editor, Mark Healey. After sampling, they’ll decide which entries get the coveted top prize trophies. Plus, guests also get a say on their favorite with the People’s Choice Award. Last year, this went to RBNY Physical Therapy for their chili and the FDNY/EMS/ DOT for their mac ‘n’ cheese entry. The fun all kicks off at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus. All are welcome. Admission is $20 and gets you access to samples of all of the entries, plus raffles, 50/50s, DJ music and more to enjoy while you eat. Plus, the money supports the 100th Precinct Community Council. the completion of construction on the Long Beach Coastal Storm Risk Reduction Project. The $130 million project was performed in two phases over a three-year period that included construction of four new groins and the rehabilitation of 18 existing groins, installing 284,000 tons of rock. The Corps also used 3.2 million cubic yards of sand to widen the beach and reinforce sand dunes. Meanwhile, in Rockaway… ***** According to an annual Census Bureau report, New York City has a shrinking population. The report says almost 40,000 moved elsewhere in 2018. The closures are needed to dismantle and remove protective shielding that was in place for the lift upgrade work, and to perform necessary mechanical maintenance work on the bridge.

Rock Away Pens Debuts Their First One-Act Play Festival By Kami-Leigh Agard

How does one cope with love, loss and identity? A trio of playwrights from Rock Away Pens (RAP) have teamed up to address this complex question in their production of three oneact plays to be performed on Friday, May 3, Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5 at the Post Theatre in Fort Tilden. Good things do come in threes as each play powerfully touches a chord that will leave you brooding over your own quest to find love, happiness and belonging within the complex framework of the modern family. The plays are thought-provoking, not just in their subject matter, but with inventive uses of music, comedy and satire to truly give you—the audience—food for thought. The first play, “Oby in the Park,” is a 30-minute children’s musical written by Breezy Point resident, Frank John Verderame, and directed by Bianca Rose. The protagonist, Oby, is a tenyear-old runaway orphan, who meets magical children in the park, that hold the secret to him getting his parents back. “‘Oby in the Park,’ is a story about family relationships,” said Verderame, who in his pre-theater life was a pediatrician. “Children and adults will find themselves singing-a-long as the mystery unfolds as to whether these magical children help Oby find his family. This is a family-friendly performance. Though it does deal with the emotional subjects of love, loss and family, everyone will be breathlessly waiting to find out what happens to Oby and does he find his family?” Verderame teased, without giving away the ending. Note that showtime for “Oby in the Park” is at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4, and 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 5. The Best Dressed Man in Rockaway, Owen Loof, who is also starring in the following play, “31 Joralemon Street,” will serve as the master of ceremonies by entertaining the audience during each intermission. The plays to follow, “31 Joralemon Street,” and “Tempt Me,” are two one-hour long domestic adult-themed comedies, not

recommended for young children. The curtain for these plays rises at 8 p.m. on the Friday and Saturday, and 5 p.m. on the Sunday. “31 Joramelon Street,” written and directed by Edward Mallon (and co-directed by Tyeakia Miles), charters the rough seas of divorced, middle-aged Jewish American sisters, Sheila and Nina, capsized by the bombshell that Sheila’s daughter, Naomi, is considering marriage to a South African college student, named, M. The clash of race, culture, religion and values begins to unravel as Stanley, Nina’s new husband, a college philosophy professor, attempts to understand and resolve the conflict. This comedy ends when Naomi makes her decision. Arverne resident, Mallon, a retired chief superintendent in operations for NYC Transit and well-accomplished fiction writer and journalist, said he was inspired to write the play after asking himself questions, “What’s the meaning of life?” and “What is American? “I fell in love with writing because I love the art of storytelling, and this is a story that I’m sure many families have lived and could relate to. The play deals with a plethora of issues including empty-nester syndrome, in which parents not only cope with feelings of loneliness and loss when their children grow up and leave the family home, but how the second generation increasingly becomes less wedded to religious and cultural traditions. (You may have seen Corry in films, Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies and Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman; and television shows, Power, Law & Order: CI, Blacklist, Madame Secretary and Bull). “Tempt Me” is about a runaway girl, named Sandra, who finds refuge in a home with a religious family. Sounds innocent enough, but the plot thickens when the lady of the household, Angela, and Sandy have an affair. Sandra is vulnerable as she wants a home, while Angela is manipulating her to seduce her husband so she can catch him cheating and possibly get alimony money. Rose shared that she always has been interested in writing about LGBTQ issues, religion, trauma, and family, so she was inspired to pen, “Tempt Me.” “This was my first play, and I received great audience feedback. It was a finalist at Manhattan Repertory Theatre’s One Act Play competition in 2016. However, I wanted to rework it with a new director, and getting to work with Mario was beyond amazing. He brought a great perspective and we as a team were happy to bring this play back with a bang,” she said. Rose has quite the resume, not just with writing, but in theater. ceived her MFA in writing from Sarah Lawrence College. Her short story, “Que Sera,” about the onset of the AIDS epidemic and a girl falling in love with a bisexual runaway, went on to win an Honorable Mention from a contest. She also has appeared in numerous productions as an actress and dancer with the Rockaway Theatre Company (RTC). Rose said, “That’s what prompted me to join RAP and Rockaway Writer’s Guild. I wanted to workshop my book with people, who were familiar with that time period. Fellow writer, Frank Verderame, whose play, ‘Oby in the Park’ that I am directing, is also a medical doctor, and gave so much advice regarding that aspect of my book.” RAP and The Rockaway Writer’s Guild was formed in the summer of 2018 when Mallon, Verderame and Rose met in the local theater circuit at the RTC. They first created a writer’s workshop for established and emerging creative writers of fiction, drama and film. The three one-act-play festival is their first public project. Mallon said, “We are all colorful raconteurs, though different in our style of writing, we all love storytelling. I tell all aspiring writers, write for the love of writing, and be passionate in whatever style or genre you choose. DAY OF REMEMBRANCE AT TEMPLE BETH-EL On Sunday, May 5 at 7 p.m., Temple Beth-El, co-sponsoring with West End Temple and the Jewish War Veterans, will take part in the nationwide effort to honor the victims of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution by holding a Day of Remembrance at Temple Beth-El. This coincides with the nation's annual commemoration of the Holocaust established by Congress. The Holocaust was the state-sponsored systematic persecution and annihilation of European Jews, and others, by Nazi Germany between 1933 and 1945. While Jews were the primary victims, over six million were killed, Roma and Gypsies, people with mental and physical disabilities and many others were targeted for destruction, along with homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, prisoners of war and political dissidents.

Betty Zapolsky, chairperson of the event at Temple Beth-El stated, "It is important, especially in this current climate of heightened anti-Semitism that the entire Rockaway community comes together to express our support and solidarity with each other. We must not allow the darkest period of history to repeat itself." As Holocaust survivor Estelle Laughlin explains, "It's not enough to curse the darkness of the past. We have to illuminate the future." To this end the entire community is invited to participate. As part of the event, Holocaust survivor Ruth Pagirsky, a member of Temple Beth-El, will tell the story of her escape from the Nazis. separate garden clubs, the Belle Harbor Garden Club and the Shore Garden Club. Both are part of the Federated Garden Clubs of NY and of their parent nationwide organization. The Gwirtzman Triangle (Beach Channel Drive and 145th Street), Pat Brackley Park (Beach Channel Drive and 121st Street), Memorial Circle (Rockaway Beach Blvd and 121st Street), and Tribute Park (commemorating those lost on 9/11, located at Bay 116th Street), are maintained by the clubs. Maintenance is funded by club donors, supplemented by the Parks Department. At holiday time the clubs help decorate local nursing homes and the 116th Street business district. Garden clubs were introduced to Rockaway in the 1950s by Pat Brackley. Membership in the Belle Harbor Garden Club is limited, as the monthly meetings are held in members’ homes. The Shore Club holds its meetings in restaurants. Our own Nadia Murphy plans meeting programs and lends her talents and expertise to park maintenance. In the early days, club meet-

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard

Special Feature — Hear From Other Local Autism Warriors As April is National Autism month, I wanted to use my column, "Life With Our ‘Artistic' Child” as a platform for local caregivers of loved ones with autism to share their personal experiences nurturing an individual on the spectrum, and their thoughts on why building autism awareness and acceptance is so vital. My last guest to share her journey is Patricia Harvey, a local mom, who is an overflowing vessel of wisdom and love.

Raising an Autistic Adult By Patricia Harvey

My son Jason is a 25-yearold nonverbal autistic male. The phases of raising an autistic child can be a very difficult and lonely one for some parents. I don’t think I will ever forget hearing the words, “Jason is autistic.” What does this mean? What is going to happen to Jason? I didn’t know what kind of life he would have. I just knew I had to give him the best life possible. My biggest fear is what happens to Jason when I am gone. Who will care for him? Will they love, understand, and respect him the way he should be?

Raising an autistic child is just being given a different set of rules to live by, which are no rules. It is—whatever works. The new normal is a life of naked swimming because he doesn’t want to wear clothes, only underwear in the house; dumping red liquids because he doesn’t like the color, red; sleepless nights and crying myself to sleep because of worry. However, one day it dawned on me that autism doesn’t have to be a life sentence. The best advice I ever got was to not retreat into Jason’s world, but to bring him into ours. I have always tried to do this. Some days are easier than others. Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to say this is easy and after all these years, at times it is still hard, but every day is an adventure, where I try to concentrate on Jason’s strengths instead of his weakness. It helps. Each day is a learning experience for both of us. I accept every new thing he does as a great accomplishment. Jason is an amazing young man who gets up each day with a smile on his face as he faces the challenges of the world, so why shouldn’t I? It used to bother me when people would stare or have comments when he would

jump or flap his arms, or make a strange noise. Now I let it go because my son has as much of a right to be a part of this world as anyone. It never bothers me when children stare; it is when the ignorant adults do or don’t try to explain to their children about the differences in people. It is always amazing to see Jason with others that are somewhere on the spectrum. It is like they all know how special each of them are without saying a word. Having 24 years of experience with this adventure, I have pretty much been through any fiasco. It does seem to me that as our children get older, service agencies believe that our children don’t need as many services as before. They want to group them together, instead of recognizing the individuals that they are. I have watched Jason go from a child who was oblivious to his surroundings, to being so excited by everything new in the world. I still wor-

ry every day about him and how he is being treated. It is scary, and the people of this world can be very cruel. One of the worst things people have said to me is, “I don’t know how you do it,” or “I don’t envy you.” I am not looking for anyone’s pity, and I love my son and I will be his voice and protect him with everything I have. My best advice is to raise your autistic child as you would any other child. They have a lot to teach us about love, understanding and acceptance in this world. Parents, please don’t forget that while your are talking care of your child, remember to take care of YOU. Our children need us to be happy and healthy to keep them happy and healthy. It Can Be Complicated The human body is an amazing but very complicated organic machine. For this reason and others, doctors and healthcare professionals never stop learning about it. Most states require those with professional licenses, like doctors and nurses, to show proof of learning when applying for and renewing their licenses. For doctors, it’s called CME, short for continuing medical education. This is one of the reasons I enjoy writing this column. Most of my columns come from articles in medical journals. After reading an article, I usually do additional research, all of which provides me with knowledge that I then share with you, my neighbors.

Blood pressure and the maintenance of it is usually something that most of us take for granted. But it is really quite complicated. When we stand up from lying down or sitting, for example, our blood pressure should plummet because gravity forces blood to rush into our abdomen and legs. But usually our blood pressure doesn’t drop precipitously. If it does, it’s called postural hypotension, which can cause dizziness and/or loss of consciousness. Our blood vessels, especially the aorta and heart, have sensors called baroreceptors that sense a drop in blood pressure. This triggers the baroreceptor reflex which, via a complicated mechanism that

includes several nerves, causes arteries to constrict, or narrow, thereby raising the blood pressure. This happens in the blink of an eye. As we age and our blood vessels get stiffer, the reflex may not work as well, which is why some older people get dizzy if they rise from a bed or chair too quickly. The aortic arch is located in the upper chest. It starts at the heart, then curves downward towards the abdominal aorta. Four major blood vessels originate from the aortic arch—the left and right subclavian and common carotid arteries. The subclavian arteries supply blood to the chest and arms, and the carotid arteries to the head and brain. Aneurysms of the aortic arch are not uncommon. Aneurysms are areas where the artery wall has weakened and ballooned out and are caused by hypertension and atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. Numerous nerves are found near the aortic arch including nerves that go to the larynx, or voice box. Damage to these nerves may cause hoarseness. All of this leads me to a review

Page 25 article I read recently. It was a case study about an 80-year-old man with a history of an aortic arch aneurysm. After he was discharged from the hospital for an episode of chest pain, he returned to the E.R. after a fall. He stated that after getting up from a chair, he became dizzy and fell, hitting his head. After the fall, he noticed that his voice had become hoarse. Shortly after appearing at the hospital he suffered a cardiac arrest and died. But before he died, X Rays and a chest CT scan revealed that his aneurysm had ruptured. The title of the article was “A Hoarse Warning: Ortner's Syndrome.” Ortner's syndrome is a combination of chest pain, postural hypotension, and hoarseness in someone with an aortic arch aneurysm. As the aneurysm expands, it causes chest pain, the baroreceptors in the aorta fail and the surrounding nerves are damaged causing dizziness upon rising, plus it presses on the nerves to the larynx causing hoarseness. IT TAKES ALL KINDS Recently I witnessed a bartender listening, with a smile on his face, to several tirades of a guest, whose every other word was the F-word. Just the way he talked. And everything bothered him, obviously because he kept on using the word. This one said this and that one did that and on and on. The bartender listened, smiled, said a word or two and moved on. I asked the bartender why the guy talked like that and wasn’t he offended by his manner and language. The bartender said with a smile, “It takes all kinds. I have the filters.”

I’ve been thinking about what he said. If we don’t immediately make a judgment relating to a person’s negative behavior, we have a better chance of understanding the source and finding ways of dealing with it. When it is an occurrence with someone we really do not know and a one-time meeting, that is easy. We can do what the bartender did: smile, accept the person and put an inner filter to work, so as not to take in something negative or offensive. When it is a person in our lives, however, that is different.

“It takes all kinds,” may be harder to accept. Acceptance doesn’t necessarily mean agreeing with or believing in, it is a matter of creating a balanced, peaceful space where things can be dealt with in an easier way. And gaining a perspective: Is that really important? Is it the small stuff? Can I accept certain behavior and do my best to be an example? Some things we cannot change. Some things we can change and have to find the courage to do so. Sometimes we need to understand the difference between what we can change and what we cannot change. “It takes all kinds” thinking brings us to looking beyond the evident, looking beyond the apparent, looking beyond. Most often there is no evil there, maybe insecurity, unawareness, non-openness, defensiveness, whatever from whenever in someone’s life that caused certain behavior that is sometimes hard to take. If it really is not life

Page 27 threatening or detrimental to someone else’s well-being, why don’t we just let it go? We can. Perhaps first find an objective listener to whom you can vent—letting it out before letting it go! Really. Often, letting out with passionate, feeling words, whatever it is about the person, can often alleviate the holding of all the objections you may have. So let it out, then let it go. You may have to repeat several times to yourself, “let it go.” It does take all kinds, and sometimes we do have to filter to get through a work shift or a long day or a minor conflict at home, taking a kind stance. In the end, we are the better for it ; we are not agitated by someone else’s words or actions, we are more peaceful, thereby, balanced and happy. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace. (This is a reprint of a column that first ran in May, 2017).

Rockaway Solutions Not Shelters Rockaway Solutions Not Shelters is a group of concerned citizens who fiercely oppose the development of an all-male homeless shelter on Beach 101st Street, as it is planned. This fundraiser will be an ongoing effort until the City of New York can come up with a more comprehensive and compassionate plan to help 116 homeless men, who are victims of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s shell game scam called the homeless shelter system. A scam of a system that lets human beings sleep overnight on a cot, in a warehouse for more than $120 per night, then forcing them back out onto the street during the

day. All this while keeping these men homeless! It is an absolute travesty that developers profit millions on the backs of homeless men. Men who should easily be given a voucher for the low cost of a room in an ultra-affordable building. One of the main solutions that our group, “Rockaway Solutions Not Shelters,” is promoting, is the building and construction of ultra-affordable residences throughout the five boroughs of NYC. Sadly, true affordable housing stock has dwindled significantly throughout the five boroughs since the 1980s. The question I ask the Mayor is, why is he not

promoting more ultra-affordable housing to be built in NYC and why is he not offering great tax incentives to foster such an easy fix to house the single homeless person? Ultra-affordable housing units will alleviate the amount of people in the forever ballooning homeless population with dignity for the homeless victim. Real ultra-affordable homes will give the homeless individual a place to call their own and at very low cost. The balance of funding can then go towards jobs or rehabilitation programs for these homeless men, not directly into the pockets of slick developers, who prey and profit on the sad misfortune of others. The Dept. of Homeless Services (DHS) has a policy of keeping homeless families, homeless mothers with children and single homeless women separate from single men who are homeless. That is why, we as Rockaway Solutions Not Shelters, has adopted the same policy! We have the exact same concerns for the families of Beach 101st Street, as DHS has for homeless

families throughout the City. That is why we are opposed to the placement of 116 homeless men next to the homes of families throughout the peninsula and the rest of the City. Our goal for this round of fundraising is quite clear: to prevent the Shelter on Beach 101st Street from opening as it is proposed. For the first round of fundraising, we will be holding 50/50’s throughout the peninsula and a Radio Bingo (date to be determined) as part of our immediate plans in the coming months. We are also asking for donations to be sent to “Rockaway Solutions Not Shelters.” Checks can be mailed to 142 Beach 92nd Street. We will soon have a P.O. box. All funds will go towards paying for Legal and Architecture Services as we work towards solutions for the men destined for 226 Beach 101st. There’s more to come, but please help us help the families of Rockaway maintain an environment around their homes and neighborhoods that fosters a less crowded, peaceful and safer way of life.

P.S. 114 Jumps Back into Theater the ways the crew helps to keep the kids working and improving is through a daily award called the “Pizza Award,” an honor borrowed from the children's theater workshop at the Rockaway Theatre Company. The “Pizza Award” is used as the theater equivalent of the game ball, where the kids who have put the most work into improving as a performer and as a member of the team are rewarded at the end of that rehearsal day. With brand new funds and an all new cast and crew, P.S/ M.S 114, along with the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA) are putting on a production of Annie Jr. with Drama Club students from grades four to eight, with hopes of having the show sometime in June. The show, the first of its kind for P.S. 114 in quite some time, came out of city council discretionary funding and the school’s desire to revitalize its drama program. It is helmed by first-time director James Dalid, who has used his longtime theater background to help educate and get kids interested in the theatrical arts. “I want to let them get a taste of being up on stage,” he said. Joining Dalid is Mia Melchiorri and Steven Wagner, both members of the Rockaway Theatre Company and RAA, who work as choreographer and music director for the show respectively. Most of the program’s details were carried over from other summer and after-school programs Dalid and others have done at RAA, but that doesn't take away all of the moving parts that go into putting on a kid’s production. “It’s a process,” Dalid said. Originally, it just started out as exercises and activities, but this year they decided to go for it and put on a full-fledged production.

Although the perpetual excitement and little kid energy can occasionally lead to problems focusing, the crew gets to enjoy watching the kids improve as time goes on as they learn the life lessons that come with participating in theater. “It’s a team effort,” says Wagner. “You can see the older and or more experienced kids helping out the kids who don’t necessarily know as much.”

Ripple Effects

The last couple of days have been nothing if not hectic. Another Easter has come and gone. The family spent an enjoyable day together at my oldest daughter's residence over in Rockaway, where we feasted on lamb chops, shrimp, pasta and salad, accompanied by a wide selection of fine wine. Truth

be told, I am not a great lover of wine and my entire life experience with the juice of the fermented grape revolves my youthful involvement with such upscale spirits as Ripple, Thunderbird, Mad Dog, Night Train, Wild Irish Rose or Boone's Farm. Back in the day, I could have cared less about the lexicon of wine aficionados, aroma, balance, body, bouquet, dry, earthy, etc. The only words I have to describe these American classics are sweet, tasty and often times carbonated with a kick. I actually suspect many a wine aficionado began with Ripple but moved on to finer wines. Not me. I liked Ripple and I’m sure if I could still buy it, I would. Unfortunately, to my dismay, I learned that Ripple, which began production in 1960, ceased production in 1984. I guess I wasn't paying attention during the

last 35 years. On the other hand, Grace (she who must be obeyed) is possessed of a much finer palate than myself and her tastes tend to run to an upscale red such as a Merlot, Pinot noir, Zinfandel, or a fine Grenache. I should point out that none of the aforesaid spirits are carbonated, thus I limited my Easter Sunday imbibing to my fall-back "happy juice"—Diet Pepsi. You know what they say, in wine there is wisdom, in beer there is strength and in Diet Pepsi, there's stuff that removes paint from your car! The very next morning found my girls celebrating the 48th anniversary of Earth Day. turn of the century in 2000, while Life Magazine reported that, “Scientists have solid experimental and theoretical evidence to support… the following prediction... In a decade, urban dwellers will have to wear gas masks to survive air pollution…by 1985, air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half….” Almost 50 years later, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is telling everyone that we have to stop relying on the current glut of crude oil or the world as we know it will end in 12 years. I also hear that Tom Cruise is working on his next blockbuster, "Mission Compostable." Good to know that the hyperbolic language hasn’t changed. daughter Vicki's 23rd birthday. The very next day, we all celebrated my oldest daughter, Amy's 24th birthday. The girls are "Irish Twins" - Amy being born on April 24, 1995, followed quickly by Vicki 364 days later on April 23, 1996. During a conversation with both my girls, I was asked what was the most memorable thing I remember about dealing with them as they were growing up. I didn't miss a beat when I responded, "All those Friday nights that I made you sit with me and watch the movie, The Shining.” Amy remarked, "Yeah, you really had a thing about that movie, didn't you?" "No," I replied, "I just wanted to impress upon the both of you, what can happen when you spend too much time with your family." All kidding aside, both the girls have grown into splen-

FROM NPS: See Gateway National Recreation Area’s Jamaica Bay, the most westerly bay along Long island’s South Shore, by kayak! The bay’s open water, creeks, inlets and saltmarshes teem with wildlife, from spawning fish, shrimp and horseshoe crabs, to mud snails, laughing gulls, and terrapin turtles. National Park Service stewards protect this remarkable wildlife refuge deep within the New York City metropolis, and present free, fun and educational paddling programs to experience it firsthand. Join in! For all programs: dress to get wet, wear shoes that will not fall off, and bring water, sunscreen
