Will The Beach Be Here for Summer?

The beaches are supposed to open in a month, on May 26, but problem is, in some areas, there won’t be much beach to use. More than five million people used Rockaway’s beaches last summer and that number is expected to grow this season, but where are they supposed to go? As the beach season nears, the problem of erosion, which appears to be worse than ever, is a tremendous concern. Last week, the Parks Department closed off the entrance to the Beach 91st Street ramp, which is looking more and more like a boat dock with each high tide. If you’re able to make your way down to that beach in that area, the level of erosion is alarming. In that area, the dunes built after Hurricane Sandy,

now have a seven-foot drop off from the water chipping away at it over the past year. We reached out to the Parks Department for a comment on the ramp situation, to which a spokesperson replied, "Some of the beach access points along the boardwalk were closed because of a steep drop off at the end of the ramps. We will grade the

sand before beach season to correct this issue and ensure that all access points to the beach are safe for visitors." As for the erosion issue and need for protection? Well, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has pushed their protection plan timeline up to 2019, rather than 2020, but the evidence is clear—we need help, NOW.

Lettuce Be Careful It looked like an old-style bank run this week when people stormed donut shops and bakeries. “What are you going to do? You just can’t starve,” a man, with a ring of sugar around his lips, said to me. He held his bag of donuts and muffins open, offering me whatever caloric time bomb I wanted. “One of them is banana. Bananas are good for you. Here, take one, have something good.” “It’s like a diet dispensation,” a woman chimed in. “If the CDC (Centers for Disease Control)

tells you not to eat something, it’s only fair you look for alternatives.” She held up a bran muffin and basically sneered at me, “Fiber.” I didn’t mean to look at the other items that filled her see-through bag but the blueberry muffins, the size of pillows, were hard to avoid. I kept a blank face but she seemed intent on burning up calories by getting annoyed and jumping up and down. “It’s about the ORAC score.” I think she added, “you idiot,”

but I was distracted by a small group of people laughing about cheating and how it was good that it happened on a Friday. Somebody said, “Wrap this.” And it cracked everyone up. I was confused. The blueberry muffin lady continued about ORAC and oxygen radical absorption and brain and heart health and daily fiber needs. She finally waved her hand at me and walked away. The Stop and Shop bakery displays were getting refilled. I’m getting in on this. If I could improve my ORAC score with blueberry muffins, I’d grab three. Probably eat one before getting to the self-checkout line. Just when I was about to commit to the new health fad, I caught the calorie notice card—who the hell’s idea was this?—under the muffins. A raisin bran muffin, the king of fiber, had more calories than a double chocolate chip muffin. Seriously. What the? A couple in matching yoga suits grabbed some cranberry

muffins. They caught me looking. “Smoothies,” the guy said. “Can’t do green this week.” “The only smoothie I’m having this weekend is a strawberry daiquiri,” someone said behind me. “Vitamin C.” Things were too weird so I got out of there without any health food. I went to Beach 116th and nodded at the guy behind the counter and ordered a BLT. His eyes bulged. “You crazy, man? “You didn’t see the news?” I’m thinking, if it’s not in The Rockaway Times, no. “Lettuce. You can have a BT but not a BLT.” I saw a guy in a HAZMAT suit walk past carrying a head of lettuce. “They outlawed lettuce. You can’t be eating that green sh*t,” counter guy said. “E-coli ain’t good for you.” I called the CDC and they confirmed the advisory about avoiding lettuce for the time being. They said Oreos and double chocolate chip muffins were safe. I told the counter guy to make me a smoothie.

Ready, Set, Cook! CHILI AND CHEESE COOK-OFF THIS FRIDAY

Things are heating up with only a few days left until the 100th Precinct Community Council’s 9th Annual Chili and Mac-n-Cheese Cook-Off this Friday, April 27 at the Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th Street). Better be hungry because it’s gearing up to be a tasty,

five-alarm blazing event full of cheesy, meaty and hearty good eats. More than 22 chili entries and for the first time in the event’s history, they’ll be throwing some macaroni and cheese into the ring. Twelve mac-n-cheese dishes are already in the running. All of the entries will be battling for the

top trophy, and bragging rights as the best on the block. This year’s entries come from local businesses, restaurants, and organizations. We hear that reps from Addabbo and Pheffer Amato’s offices are joining in the competition too, and all are going up against Jessica Luina of Councilman Donovan Richards’ office, last year’s first place champ, who’ll be back to defend her title. First, second and third prizes are chosen by the three judges and a fourth, “People’s Choice� award will be chosen by attendees that evening. DJ Eddy will be spinning great tunes and there will be raffles, door prizes, a 50/50 and a Chinese auction featuring gift certificates, gift baskets and more. Joe Young, president of the community council, notes the organization receives no funding to operate and relies on this annual event to support

their work. The Chili Cook-Off is the 100th Precinct Community Council’s biggest fundraiser and allows them to throw other fun events like National Night Out Against Crime, movie nights with Santa and more. Tickets are $20 and kids 12 and under are free. All guests will get to sample whatever dish they want. Also, there’s still time to enter as a cook! and tugboats. And, the new reefs will also include jetty rocks! Jetty rocks are now in Long Beach. Jetty rocks are being sunk to create reefs. Hmmm, we wonder if jetty rocks might be used somewhere else…. ***** Happy Hornblower. We’re not sure if it’ll go down as historic, but May 1 is the first anniversary of the new ferry service. One significant achievement: a year later and there are very few haters. ***** Cynthia Nixon, the Sex and the City actress, activist, and friend of Bill de Blasio is running for governor, challenging the tolling governor, Andrew Cuomo. She was in Rockaway last week at the YMCA calling for New York to embrace renewable energy. She’s been called a neophyte but she seemed like an old hand (political hack) when she said she’d make New York 100 percent reliant on renewable energy by 2050. 2050? We know you’ve got to start somewhere but are we supposed to wait

until then to ask if she’s kept her campaign promises? We’re encouraging others to run for governor too. Just pledge to make all New Yorkers millionaires by 2060. ***** That’s not to say we’re here to bury politicians. State Senator James Sanders deserves credit for running seminars, workshops and information sessions on a regular basis. Many of the events are on the mainland but plenty are in Rockaway. Just recently, he and his team have helped constituents with flood preparation, hosted a free mammogram event, led a home and business ownership program, and even ran a seminar for women on how to run for office and win. ***** Someone probably didn’t need coupons that week. PIPELINE BATTLE GOES ON DESPITE REJECTION Just as protesters and supporters are gearing up to battle it out over Williams’ newly proposed natural gas pipeline project off of Rockaway’s waters, the project has been temporarily stopped. There is much debate over whether Williams’ proposed Northeast Supply Enhancement Project will be helpful or harmful and on Thursday, April 26 at the Best Western Gregory Hotel (8315 4th Ave), all parties will provide their thoughts on the project during a public hearing from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. This meeting will focus on the draft Environmental Impact Statement for the project, issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Williams must go through the process with FERC before proceeding with construction for the project, which includes a 23-mile pipeline that will extend under the ocean from New Jersey and connect to the already-existing Rockaway Lateral Project, which goes through Riis Park and up

Flatbush Avenue. The addition would bring more natural gas to New York City. The FERC process will continue and the meeting on Thursday will still take place, but the project has taken a big step backwards after the Department of Environmental Conservation denied a necessary water quality certification for the project. In an announcement on Friday, April 20, the DEC said, “Williams has not completed its application in a timely manner, and the environmental review of the project being conducted by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission remains incomplete, as well. Moreover, the application materials that were submitted to DEC showed potentially significant environmental impacts that raised serious concerns.” Williams has an opportunity to complete its application and resubmit it, but this denial now puts the project on hold, no matter what FERC decides.

belly-popping challenge — by going to all 24 locations, extending from Beach 72nd to 102nd Streets. With the great ticket price of $15 in advance or $20 on the day of, how can you resist delectable choices ranging from Thai, West Indian, Uzbek, Italian, Peruvian, desserts — too much to list, but you get the idea. There’s a crochet craze sweeping P.S./M.S.114Q and Miss Abby and Miss Lisa are leading the charge. While some use their breaks to check emails or Facebook, and one or two may even still slip out to grab a smoke, Safety Officer Abby Yearwood and School Aide, Lisa Consavo are using

their breaks to teach the smallest of hands how to work a loom, a hook and knitting needles. Yearwood, or the Crochet Queen as some call her, picked up her skills from Consavo, and together the two women are paying it forward. A few years back, Yearwood noticed students hovering around her desk, fixated on

the rhythmic movement of her hook as she worked the brightly colored yarns into hats and headbands. With each passing week, the crowd of pint-sized spectators grew, and it wasn’t long before they wanted to join in. Within a few weeks the floodgates opened; knitting and crocheting was a hit and Yearwood couldn’t have been happier. Together, the women volunteer their lunchtimes, breaks and after-school time to teach the kids, some as young as seven, how to make brilliant blankets, scarves, coasters and even pocketbooks. It’s been two years since that first student sheepishly asked for a lesson and The Crochet Club is now booming with both boys and girls from first through fifth grades participating at lunch and after school. On Monday morning, at exactly 10:47 a.m. as the classroom doors open, children spill out into the halls, shuffling from one room to another. It’s the change of class for some but for others it’s what they’ve been waiting for all morning: knitting and

crocheting time. Hurrying over to Miss Abby’s desk, a group of about ten boys and girls gather cross-legged on the floor, pull out their creations and get to work. “Miss Abby, should I rip this out?” “Miss Abby, is this ok?” “Miss Abby, is this long enough?” “Miss Abby, do you like this?” With her gentle voice and simple instructions, Miss Abby guides her students through the stitches, standing by like a proud mother watching over her brood. Yearwood patiently works with each student until she finds what works best for them. “It took one student weeks and weeks to finally get it. I tried her on the loom, then with a hook, then needles. She finally got it and I was thrilled,” Yearwood said, beaming at the accomplishment. “Another student was so shy when she started with me. She barely ever spoke. It was, in essence, a rewrite of a DOT press release with no data or analysis to support the conclusions. Is it true that drivers behave differently in warmer weather? Do they drive faster or slower? Or are there more cars on the road? Is the mix of drivers different? i.e., are there more people on the road who rarely drive? Is the mix of vehicles different (more motorcycles, boat trailers)? Are there more people walking or playing in the street? I’m not saying that I know the answers, but I am sure that the city planners who run things at DOT under the supervision of Eric Beaton and Polly Trottenberg have no idea of the reasons for the rise in crashes. States Park Police(USPP) officers responded to a call of a reptile abandoned in Fort Tilden. A park visitor walking by happened upon the alligator inside of a fish tank and called USPP. USPP Officers Staunton and his training Officer Pitt responded over. When they arrived, the officers found that the alligator had escaped the fish tank and was attempting to make a getaway. The officers were able to corral the alligator and get it back into the tank. They used police tape as a makeshift lid to keep the alligator secured in the tank and then transported it to a NYC Animal Control Center in Brooklyn, where the alligator will be looked after and returned to its natural habitat.

A Permanent Place for POWs

Belle Harbor resident Brian Galazara is doing his part to ensure the prisoners of war and those missing in action, are never forgotten, by bringing awareness to those who pass through JFK Airport. Lazara, a retired Army sergeant and a member of the Daniel M. O’Connell American Legion Post 272 in Rockaway Beach, began working as an American Airlines fleet service clerk at JFK Airport in 2016. On Veterans Day 2016, he set up a POW/MIA table in the employee break room, which

sparked a lot of questions from those unfamiliar with the reason behind the fully set table, complete with a rose and an American Flag. He was appointed veterans’ coordinator for Local 501 of the Transportation Workers Union (TWU) in 2017, and shortly after, the Veterans’ Committee put him in charge of creating a permanent POW/ MIA table located at Gate 12 in Terminal 8 of JFK Airport. This gate is JFK’s veterans’ gate, which pays tribute to Medal of Honor Recipients.

The old Tappan Zee Bridge will see new life in the form of artificial reefs, one of which will be coming to Rockaway. You may soon see more tugboats and barges on the water. On Tuesday, April 17, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the largest expansion of artificial reefs in state history. The barges will be carrying concrete and clean, recycled materials from the former Tappan Zee Bridge, which will be used to create six artificial reefs across the state. One will be in our waters. The others will be off the shores of Smithtown, Shinnecock, Moriches, Fire Island, and Hempstead. "The sustainability and health of New York's marine resources is critical to communities along our shores, and by constructing these reef habitats, we are investing in a stronger more diverse marine ecosystem," Governor Cuomo said. "As the largest artificial reef construction program in state history, these efforts will increase New York's

marine biodiversity, provide new habitats for a variety of coral and fish, and support a growing tourism industry that brings thousands of anglers and travelers to Long Island's pristine waters every year." Some reefs will start to be constructed in May. The construction of the Rockaway Reef will begin later this summer with a barge of Tappan Zee Bridge material heading our way in July and August. The material will be used to expand Rockaway’s artificial reef. The 413-acre reef is located 1.6 nautical miles from shore with a depth of 32-40 feet. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) manages New York's Artificial Reef Program. Artificial reefs improve existing habitats in order to increase local marine biodiversity, stimulating more productive and diverse aquatic ecosystems, and promoting environmental sustainability through fish habitat improvement.

What the Heck Is That? What is that? With the weather finally feeling more like spring last weekend, the boardwalk was full of folks enjoying the sun. But out on the horizon on Sunday, April 22, a mysterious boat off the shore of Rockaway had many asking questions. Many who looked out on the water, may have noticed a barge with some abnormally tall cargo. Some even posted photos on local social media pages, asking, what’s that? Some speculated that it was a tall ship, a dredger, or something related to the natural gas pipeline off our shores. As the vessel got closer to shore, making its way past the Belt Parkway, some got a better view. Local Joe Lupo was on the

Rockaway ferry when he got some close-up shots of the Zhen Hua 20, a barge carrying four “Super Cranes.” According to an article by SILive.com, the 247-foot super cranes traveled for more than 60 days from Shanghai, China. They are on their way to the A.P. Moller-Maersk Terminal in Port Elizabeth, N.J. Cheers to 50 Years, Healy’s! the people that got a little older and made their way back for the occasion.” The day was full of food, live music by The Fabulous Wades and Gerald Bair, plenty of drinks and fun. On April 23, 1968, George Healy opened the former Morrissey’s as Healy’s Pub, and as they say, the rest is history. But it’s always been Healy history. George Healy passed the bar down to his son, Tom Healy, Sr., who had worked around the bar starting at 17, and about a decade ago, he passed it down to his sons, Tommy Healy, Jr. and Kevin Healy. For 50 years, not much has changed, but to many, that’s the thing that keeps them coming.

George Healy has been gone since January 8, 2002, but with his portraits hanging behind the bar each day, his presence is still felt in the legacy he left behind. And the Healys believe he’d say something along the lines of, “job, well done.” “He’d be thrilled,” Tom Healy, Sr. said. “Every once in a while, I glance up at the photo of him in his Army outfit and I know what he’d be saying. He didn’t have to say much. I remember those eyes said it all. All you had to do was look at them and you could tell what he was thinking, and I know he’d be proud,” Tom Healy, Sr. said.

It was a Golden Jubilee at Healy’s. The longtime community staple, Healy’s Pub, said cheers to 50 years on Saturday, April 21 and hundreds came through to celebrate the occasion. Any night at Healy’s is a good time for friends and family to get together, but last Saturday was a special one. Old friends joined and new friends were made as people of all generations came out to celebrate the bar’s 50th Anniversary. For many, Healy’s is a place that united them. A place where many met their spouses, where some got engaged and where many have celebrated

special occasions from birthdays to anniversaries of their own. It’s Rockaway’s own “Cheers” bar, “where everybody knows your name… and they’re always glad you came!” And on Saturday, everyone came to say cheers to the Healy family on their accomplishment of keeping the bar in the family for five decades. “It was packed on Saturday,” Tommy Healy, Jr. said. “We had a great turnout. There were a lot of faces you don’t see as much anymore with people moving away or going down south for the winter. A lot came back and it was almost like a reunion. Cynthia Nixon Pays Rockaway a Visit By Kami-Leigh Agard Two days before Earth Day, on Friday, April 20 at the YMCA, former Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon, now 2018 gubernatorial hopeful, came out full force with an entourage to pitch to Rockaway why she is the best candidate to put New York State on the map as the leader in a clean energy economy and 100 percent renewable energy by 2050. I am here because when the sun rises on primary day, I believe Cynthia Nixon will be the next governor of NY.â€? After more rallying cries for “Nixon not Cuomoâ€? by the remaining speakers, Nixon opened with the following Iroquois saying, “In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations.â€? She then rehashed her personal experiences with Hurricane Sandy. “On the eve of Sandy, I was home with my wife and our children (in Manhattan). It was horrible, but we were able to get our kids to safety. Here in Rockaway, people did not have that luxury,â€? Nixon said. Some components of Nixon’s plan: • Transition to 100 Percent Renewable Energy. According to

Nixon, “NY currently only gets four percent of its electricity from solar and wind. Our current Governor committed to 50 percent renewables by 2030 – but only for electricity, not carbon emissions coming from major sources like transportation and buildings.â€? (Note that hours after Nixon’s speech, Cuomo released a statement about a multi-faceted plan to reduce the state’s energy emissions, increase annual electricity savings to more than three percent by 2025 and pour $36.5M into training for clean energy jobs.) • Passing the Climate and Community Protection Act (CCPA), which calls for the state to transition to clean energy across all sectors, including transportation and buildings, by 2050. According to The New York Times, this bill, which offers directives, goals and oversight, but little practical advice, passed the Democrat-dominated Assembly, but died in the Republican-controlled Senate. • Reject All New Fossil Fuel Infrastructure. Investing in new fracked gas infrastructure marks us into decades of more emissions that we cannot afford and poses serious health risks for surrounding communities. This unnecessary and expensive pipeline will transport fracked gas within a mile of Staten Island and will hit us right here in Rockaway. Not on my watch. We are so dependent on oil, you think the oil industry is going to let a polluters’ tax fly? Nope!� As a bevy of people surrounded Nixon, congratulating her on her initiative, this same resident piped up with “What about the Cross Bay toll? This is what I came to hear about.�

Compost Giveaway on Saturday Now that the spring weather has arrived, why not give your garden a boost with some compost? The Rockaway Civic Association (RCA) will be giving some away for free on Saturday, April 28. For those that choose to use the new Department of Sanitation (DSNY) brown bins to discard food and other organics, it’s not for no reason. Those recycled organics can be used to create compost, and in turn, that compost comes back to the neighborhood in giveaways such as the Rockaway Civic’s giveaway on Saturday. From noon until 3 p.m., all are welcome to swing by the bus shelter on Beach 107th Street and Shore Front Parkway, where the Rockaway Civic Association and DSNY will be distributing bags of compost to be used in your gardens. Compost is a beneficial resource for gardens as it enriches soil, helps retain

moisture and suppresses plant diseases and pests, allowing your plants, flowers, fruits and vegetables to grow better and healthier. “This is a really beautiful cycle,� RCA’s Bobby Zimmer said. “You get a food product that goes from the store to your home to DSNY’s compost barrels and then it’s turned into compost and makes it’s way back to Rockaway to beautify our gardens.� Both members of the Rockaway Civic Association and the general public, can get compost on Saturday. Supplies will be limited, so it is suggested to pre-register at RockawayCivic.com. Anyone looking to volunteer to distribute compost is also encouraged to come out on Saturday. School students will be eligible for community service hours.

#EatShopSurfRock On Saturday May 19, the Rockaway Business Alliance (RBA) will host #EatShopSurfRock, a digital scavenger hunt around the Rockaway peninsula to showcase Rockaway ConneX, a technology project funded by NYC Small Business Services’ Neighborhood Challenge Grant. Participants will visit RBA member businesses, using their phones to engage with beacon and QR code technology to collect clues and treasure. The scavenger hunt will begin at the NYC Ferry Landing at Beach 108th and Beach Channel Drive. There will also be several other starting locations around the peninsula (TBD). Participants

will connect with a beacon and/ or QR code at the starting location, which will link to a map of all participating locations. From there, they can “choose their own adventure,” traveling around the peninsula by foot, bike, car or public transportation and engaging with Rockaway ConneX to receive hidden clues and special discounts at local businesses. The first clue will be available starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday May 19, but participants can join anytime between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. The event will also partner with LadyBo’s 2nd Annual Rockaway Beach Fitness Crawl. Guideline Adjustments The diagnosis and treatment of many diseases, especially hypertension and diabetes, has been standardized across the country by the development and use of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). In 1977, the first CPG for the treatment of hypertension was formulated by the first Joint National Committee (JNC) on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure. The members of the JNC1 were appointed by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and included experts from major professional societies, the Veterans Administration, and the U.S. Public Health Service. JNC1 concentrated on diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and recom-

mended a stepped-care approach for therapy in all adults with a DBP of 105 or greater. There were no specific recommendations for systolic blood pressure (SBP) because “if both systolic and diastolic blood pressures were used as guidelines, the recommendations would be far too complex.” Since JNC1 in 1997, there have been six other JNCs. In 2003, JNC7 used a classification system in which adults with an average SBP of 140 or above and a DBP of 90 or above were designated as having hypertension and those with a SBP of 130 to 139 and a DBP of 80 to 89 were designated as having prehypertension. All of the JNCs recommended non-pharmaco-

logic treatment measures such as weight loss, aerobic exercise, and smoking cessation, recommendations that are still used today. The goal of diagnosing and treating high blood pressure is to prevent heart disease. Recognizing this, in 2013 the NHLBI transferred the responsibility for development of heart disease prevention to the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American College of Cardiology (ACC). Last year, the AHA and ACC published their CPG for the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension and the prevention of heart disease. The new guideline uses a different classification system for blood pressure as compared to JNC7. Now adults with a SBP of 130 to 139 and a DBP of 80 to 89 are classified as having Stage 1 hypertension, not prehypertension. The new guideline takes into account a person’s risk for developing heart disease, which is why it is now recommended that anyone with diabetes or kidney disease and a blood pressure of 130/80 or greater should begin treatment. For those without diabetes or heart or kidney disease treat-

ment should begin at 140/90. In addition, the 2017 guideline recommends that anyone 65 or older with a SBP of 130 or greater should begin treatment. It is estimated that the 2017 guideline will increase the number of people classified as having hypertension by about 14 percent and will increase the number of those on antihypertensive medications by about 1.9 percent (4.2 million adults). The guideline also concludes that adults who warrant antihypertensive treatment will require at least two drugs. The actual treatment recommendations have not changed though and a diuretic (thiazide like HCTZ or chlorthalidone) should be used first with either an ARB (i.e. losartan), ACE inhibitor (i.e. lisinopril), or calcium channel blocker (i.e. diltiazem). Successful implementation of the new guideline should result in a substantial reduction in blood pressure with a commensurate decrease in the incidence of heart disease, in line with the mission of the organizations responsible for the new guideline. PRIVACY IN THE FINE PRINT By Beth Hanning

Who are these people that are complaining about Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook violating their privacy? I am not sure about you, but I pretty much know everything about everyone I am friends with on Facebook. Sometimes it is actually too much information. In March 2014, the television news show 60 Minutes, did a segment on “The Data Brokers.” The episode was all about how our phones are tracking devices and people are tracking our every move. You know that disclaimer that comes up and we all click “Agree to the terms and conditions of this app/website?” How many of us have ever actually read the disclaimer? The people I am referring to are the said Data Brokers. There were three major companies in this field that were showcased on the episode:

Acxiom, Experian and Epsilon. They actually sell our information. As of 2014 they had 1,500 pieces of information on over 200 million Americans. At the time I saw this episode, I was shocked to hear the answers to some questions that had been bothering me at the time: Why do I get certain emails at certain times of the year? Why am I getting this email about that product? How does the email world know certain things about me? Why does dictionary.com have advertisements for items I just browsed? Well, 60 Minutes answered those questions for me. We are being tracked. Everything we do. Our credit card purchases, our online activity, our social media activity, EVERYTHING! My friends were alarmed when I answered the questions I had previously asked: Why do I get this email? I explained to them what I had learned and again, shocked faces. My one

friend, Genevieve will forward me emails and say “Why did I get this email?” One time she forwarded me an email about purchasing bibles. She wanted an explanation why she received that email. I emailed her back and asked her: “How many times a day/week do you go onto SFDS Catholic Academy website to check on events for the children?” She replied “every day.” I said, there is your answer… In the episode, Senator Jay Rockefeller was discussing how he was launching an inquiry into the three big companies and warning them that things were going to change. Senator Rockefeller retired not long after that interview and has since passed away. According to Privacyrights.org, it states the following: “According to the FTC, there are no current federal laws requiring data brokers to maintain the privacy of consumer data unless they use that data for credit, employment, insurance, housing, or other

similar purposes. Consumers generally have no federal right to know what information data brokers have compiled about them for marketing purposes. No federal law provides consumers with the right to correct inaccuracies in the data or assumptions made by data brokers.” So when I saw Mark Zuckerberg being questioned by the Senate Committee, I was perplexed. One question they asked him was: What hotel did you stay at last night? He replied he did not want to answer and people did not like his answer. I really wish he said “You do not know where I stayed because I did not check in there like the millions of Facebook users who check in wherever they are.” I know where most of Rockaway spent spring break: The Alden Suites in St. Petersburg, Florida! The Play’s the Thing By Lou Pastina

Ok, so you have taken the ferry in, done Stone Street, done Fraunces Tavern, hit Federal Hall and the New York Stock Exchange, and the Smithsonian at Bowling Green, now what? I’m glad you asked that question because when you get off the ferry you have access to two things that can make a Wednesday afternoon quite nice in the city. The first is the subway at Wall and William Streets, right up the block from the ferry. The num-

ber 2 or 3 trains will take you directly to Times Square. The second is the TKTS office in Times Square at 47th street. This site opens at 10 a.m. for same day matinee shows. And if you are going to see a play (a non-musical), you can go to the west side of the site and avoid potentially longer lines. How discounted and how good are the tickets? I have sat in the first row for about $70 to see a first rate show. And you can now use your credit card to buy the tickets. At one time it was cash only,

but that has changed. So what should you see? Well there’s an app for that! Go to tdf. org to see real-time listings of shows available. What shows are available? How about Hello Dolly; A Bronx Tale; Kinky Boots; Beautiful; Escape to Margaritaville to name just a few. How many stops on the train? Not bad really, there are five stops and it goes by really fast. Once you get off at Times Square, just navigate your way up to 47th street to the TKTS booth. After the show it’s easy to head back downtown the same way, just hop on the train and back to the ferry. Most shows start at 2 p.m. and are over by 4:30, it’s not out of the question to be on the ferry soon afterwards heading back to the Rock. By then it should be time for a nice sunset and dinner at the Wharf. The last three shows I have seen have been as different as night and day, but I enjoyed them nonetheless. My Fair Lady at Lincoln Center was absolutely beautiful. Great sets, songs and the kind of feeling you get when your spirit has been lifted

The Rockaway Times by something bigger than you. The Play that Goes Wrong was side-splittingly funny and reminiscent of Monty Python in that ridiculous sort of way. Lobby Hero was also funny but was laden with moral choices that we all face in life and the consequences of the choices we make. Heavier stuff, but a good workout for the mind and spirit too. If you want to try something completely different (to quote a Monty Python saying) check out National Geographic’s Ocean Encounter on West 44th Street. You can find it online at natgeoencounter.com, and get discounted tickets on that site too. This virtual underwater exploration of the seas and the creatures that live there are mindboggling. The technology used to simulate this deep dive is really cool stuff. It takes about an hour to go through the guided tour, but is well worth it. Hope you get the chance to get out and see some of the great things our city has to offer, and with the ferry at our disposal, it’s all only a short ride away! Happy sailing!

How blessed are we to live in Rockaway Beach with such an amazing community of friendly faces? So thankful to live in Rockaway Beach where there are angels everywhere. I remember to breathe throughout the day. I remind myself that I can choose peace, no matter what is going on around me. Whenever I desire, I can retreat to that quiet place within, simply by closing my eyes or stepping outside in the sunshine. Smell the ocean air, it’s so refreshing and healing. Thank you, Rockaway Beach, thank you Paulette for your guidance and sharing the column among other things. May you all have joy and happiness. Thank you for another beautiful day on Earth. Let’s take this opportunity to make the Earth a better place for our children to inherit. May you all be happy, healthy, safe and live with ease.

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard

Special Feature — Hear From Other Local Autism Warriors As April is National Autism month, I wanted to use my column, "Life With Our 'Artistic' Child” as a platform for local caregivers and friends of loved ones with autism to share their story. An infinite amount of thanks to The Rockaway Times, and the Rockaway Beach “Artistic” Families support group (RBAFSG), which I founded over a yearand-a-half ago. Meet my dear friend, Rockaway Beach resident, Jammin’ Jon Kiebon, a doting single dad to 20-yearold Gail, who is on the autism spectrum. Jon has not only become a creative inspiration in my family’s life, but Rockaway at large. Authored by Jammin’ Jon Kiebon I am writing this on the eve of my daughter, Gail's 20th birthday. It's so hard to believe that two decades have passed since her birth, April 19, 1998. I'll never forget laying eyes on her for the first time, then actually cutting the cord and holding her in my arms. Like every parent, an instant and unbreakable bond was formed. Gail is my first and only child, and from birth was a beautiful, happy, healthy baby girl; playful-

ly rambunctious and a good sleeper (once she got on the night schedule), and oh how she loved that bottle! There were no signs or causes for alarm, or anything out of the ordinary that her mother or I noticed. However at 14 months, Gail had not yet begun to walk and started making flapping motions with her hands. At my mother's suggestion (you know how grandmas are!), we consulted the pediatrician. When Gail began to walk a month or so later, any cause for concern seemed unnecessary. However, from this point, we began hearing terms like early intervention, occupational and physical therapy, neurologist, special needs, developmental delays and then the “A” word. To be honest, I knew very little about autism. The term, autism spectrum disorder was not in vogue at that time, as her initial diagnosis was Pervasive Developmental Disorder — not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS). Thankfully, we were fortunate to have caring and concerned professional service providers addressing our issues, and helping us connect with other parents. I heard so many different stories about

this "A" word like about children who isolate, exhibit extreme ritualistic behavior, are anti-social and self harming. Fortunately, little Gail was outgoing, extremely charming and very social. Other than her hand-flapping and minor delays in certain developmental areas, Gail was in the high-functioning classification for sure. As Gail's verbal and social skills progressed, she was always looking to socialize with her peers. This is still a source of much frustration, as I don't understand how some parents can sometimes be so resistant in allowing our kids to get together. However, I am grateful for the friendships my daughter has made, and the time she is able to socialize with peers outside of school. What has confounded me over the years is when people tell me, “I give you so much credit. I don't know how you do it.” I've even had people say to me, “I'm sorry,” after hearing my daughter has special needs. I know they meant well, but my acceptance of my daughter is always complete gratitude for who she is — her person — the most supreme blessing ever granted to me. So forming that bond and having that great daddy-daughter relationship, and becoming Gail's play pal at an early age came easy for me. Patience, of course, was key! Watching her fixate over certain things ran the course with Elmo, Winnie the Pooh, the Powerpuff Girls and video games. This is no knock at her mom, who handled many other tasks well, but just didn't have the patience to be the play pal and sit on the floor with Gail for hours and watch the “Powees” (Powerpuff Girls) go around the train track on the electric train set. Over the years, we captured special family moments on video. Gail really took a liking to the videos and was very fascinated with seeing herself on TV. As we made our home movies, I was the cameraman, and Gail was the narrator. Every time I would

The Rockaway Times turn the camera on, Gail would say, “Hi Kids. Welcome to Gail Video.” Her imaginary audience was “The Kids,” to whom she would describe the events of the day. From there, the Gail Video Show evolved into little stories with themes and scenarios derived from the imagination of the imaginer, Gail. As Gail's tween years approached, and more interactions with peers, and different feelings and situations, which required processing, occurred in her life, the focus of Gail TV shifted in direction and a role reversal of sorts. I now found myself in front of the camera with Gail behind it, still serving as the narrator. Gail TV has continued to evolve as Gail has matured, including a flashback time travel show with little Gail with future Gail, and present Gail, who all interact with people in her life, past and present. So now that the incredible amazing film maker, director extraordinaire, Gail Kiebon has turned 20, the Gail TV live audience is greeted at the opening of each new episode with "Hello Young Adults — Welcome to Gail Kiebon TV.” The prolific team of Kiebon & Kiebon has produced well over 300 Gail shows! Now that's what I call Daddy-Daughter bonding! My hope is that other caregivers might discover a way of helping their loved ones on the spectrum find a constructive, creative means for them to process day-to-day events in their life and express their feelings creatively. A proud father was showing a fellow worker a picture of his five grown sons. His friend asked what they did for a living. The father said the older two are doctors and the youngest two are lawyers. The friend asked about the middle son and the father said, "Oh, he's a plumber. Someone had to pay for all the others' educations." This week's article is a little bit of a change of pace. While we wait for the weather to officially usher in spring, I’d like to discuss something that is going to affect a lot of people in the near future. When I was a senior in high school, it was a given that you were going to college. I was told by EVERYONE, (except my parents) that

you wouldn’t ever become successful if you didn’t have a college degree. I applied to college and got accepted, just to keep the guidance counselor off my back, but I knew that the college road was just not for me. Fast-forward 10 years and not much has changed. High school students are immediately ushered into picking a college and a major, two decisions that are unrealistic to make at the age of 17. They sign for loans that they don’t read, and if they read them, don’t understand, all the while believing that they are doing the best thing for their future. After all, this is what they have been told since they were five years old. Why would they think there was any other option? Let me tell you, from the bot-

Ten years ago the tuition was affordable compared to what it is today, yet students and their parents are blindly charging forward going deeper and deeper into debt for a degree that is worth less and less. I am not speaking to the people who want their kids to become doctors or lawyers or CPA’s. If your kid wants that, then of course you have to conform to the rules that are in place. What I am saying is that if your kid isn’t sure, or not made for college, it doesn’t mean that he or she will have any disadvantage going forward. The jobs that are available in the “skilled labor” fields are wide open. Heavy machinery operators, plumbers, electricians, the list goes on and on and these are good jobs. You learn a skill that going forward, very few people seem to want, which only makes it more valuable a skill to have. People think that these are the jobs that nobody wants and I

Page 39 never understood why. Yes, you get your hands dirty, yes you have to move to actually get the work done but I guarantee you the first-year law clerk working 80 hours a week, sleeping at his office works harder than I do. Just because you wear a suit, doesn’t mean the work isn’t hard. It is the perception of these skilled labor jobs that I wish was understood. After all, the main reason that kids don’t want to become plumbers is because their parents don’t want them to become plumbers. Every kid thinks they need to become a surgeon to make their parents happy. I’m telling you, as parents, don’t discourage your kids from seeking an alternative way to the top. There are plenty of ways to get there. It’s the perception that has to change first. It should be perfectly fine not to go to college at all. It starts with the parents. Don’t be afraid of going against the grain. I can tell you firsthand that not going to college was the greatest thing I ever did for myself.

Local Women Learn About Ownership Senator James Sanders Jr. welcomed a new group of applicants to his groundbreaking home and business ownership program called the Madam C.J. Walker Institute, with a celebration on April 20, at the Arverne by the Bay Community Center. "Who is ready to own a home?" Sanders asked the crowd. "Langston Hughes once said that America should be America for everyone. There is so much wealth and progress all around us, but for a long time our plate has been empty. Let's do something about that." The program begins with a mandatory 4-week financial boot camp which teaches participants how to repair / build their credit and how to design a personally tailored budget. The second part of the program will partner candidates with banks that have

Local Aggie Batista to Discuss Franchise Opportunities at Expo

Rockaway’s Aggie Batista of Dream Vacations, will be joining other franchise owners at the International Franchise Expo this year, teaching anyone interested in owning a franchise how to make it happen. From May 31 through June 2, the International Franchise Expo (IFE) will be at the Javits Center in Manhattan. Guests will have the opportunity to learn about hundreds of different franchise opportunities, as well as listen in on panels full of advice. Aggie Batista, who owns a Dream Vacations franchise, will be participating in two panels. On Friday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Batista will participate in the panel, “What I Wish I Knew Before Buying a Franchise.” Batista and others will talk about their experiences in selecting their franchise and what they learned about reading the fine print: the importance of location and local demographics in selecting a franchise; negotiating with the franchisor; whether the business category matters relative to your own background, expertise and interests; and the amount of work involved, both in researching and once they became a franchisee. Then at 1 p.m., she’ll be participating in another panel called “Making the Leap: How

to Succeed as a Franchisee.” Batista and other franchisees will discuss the steps they took to grow a successful franchise business. Learn the keys that helped their business thrive, the challenges and pitfalls they faced along the way and how to avoid them. What one thing really made the difference to these top-performers? P.S./M.S. 183 2nd Graders Publish Books On Tuesday, April 17, P.S./ M.S. 183's second-grade classes hosted a book publishing party to reveal the book they co-created as a class. Each child worked very hard on writing and illustrating their very own page. The school says they were happy to give the students a chance to showcase their incredible work to their parents and community. Their books were called “Second Grade Superheroes” and “Oh The Places We’ll Go.”

NEW OPERATOR TAKES OVER GATEWAY MARINA Gateway Marina, right over the Marine Parkway Bridge, has a new operator. The National Park Service (NPS) recently announced that the Moonbeam Leasing & Management LLC has been selected as the new operator of Gateway Marina, in the Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. “There is no better way to appreciate the natural beauty and history of New York Harbor than by boat," Commissioner Joshua Laird, National Parks of New York Harbor, said. "The Gateway Marina is an important NPS asset in New York City. We congratulate Moonbeam on its successful proposal to operate the marina at Gateway National Recreation Area and look forward to the excellent service they will provide for area boaters," he said. Moonbeam Leasing & Management LLC, is a subsidiary of Moonbeam Capital Invest-

ments LLC, a private equity fund which owns and redevelops commercial and residential properties nationwide. “Moonbeam is excited to take over the management of one of New York’s most desirable waterfront properties – the 500 boat-slip Gateway Marina. We intend to beautify, improve and expand this hidden jewel’s facilities in order to better serve the community, raise the Marina’s profile and provide the highest quality recreational services to boaters from New York City and elsewhere,” Steven Maksin, Chief Executive Officer of Moonbeam, said. Moonbeam was selected based on its ability to reconfigure, upgrade, and make improvements at the marina facilities as specified by NPS. Among the anticipated improvements are upgrades to the marina’s appearance and boater amenities. Moonbeam began operations in mid-April.

Saturday, April 21, kicked off another glorious Rockaway Little League (RLL) Opening Day at the fields of Fort Tilden. Under crisp sunny skies, RLL’s families came out to march and party. The march was led by drum and bagpipe duo, John McManus and Sean Thornton, our youngest players, who came out for our annual parade. Master of Ceremonies Jimmy Smallman welcomed special guests, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer-Amato; Rockaway’s own Dan Brown, representing Queens Borough President Melinda Katz’s office; and City Comptroller, Scott Stringer. Thank you to our guests who all came out to wish our families a great season. RLL's president and founder, Marty Andresen offered welcoming words to all, presenting the first pitch to begin Challenger Division’s first game of the 2018 season. Festivities included bounce rides and cotton candy for the kids, an all-you-can-eat barbeque and a special fundamentals clinic sponsored by the Scholars’ Academy Varsity Team. Pitching in to help out RLL’s most important fundraiser of the year were current and former Major Boys/ Girls players, volunteering to help sell chances for the Chinese auction, assist in food prep and act as guides for our special guests. We’re fortunate to have our older teens come back yearafter-year to help out! Leading off a big weekend of Opening Day games, Ryan Wiley of the Empire Unlimited MNB

Angels enjoyed one of his best games, scoring, driving in runs and stealing two bases. The Angels went on to win their Friday afternoon game 5-4 over the Allstate Rockaway Park MNB Dodgers. Speaking of Angels, a big wayto-go to the Walsh Management PWS Angels winning their Sunday game 10-0 over the ABLE Discovery Center for Children’s Diamondback. The Angels had a lot to celebrate as they marked a 3-0 winning record this season. Congrats to Curran’s Meat’s MJB Cubs for their Wednesday 11-6 win over DriveSafe Auto Center’s Orioles. Pee Wee Sr. Baseball division enjoyed a close game with Walsh Management Angels win 7-6 over the A.O.H. Division 21 Athletics. Great game boys! The spring weather is not the only thing heating up as our Major Girls’ Softball division is getting cooking with teams Lana’s Loft Bobcats (coached by Rob

Rose and Donald Powell), and Lola Star’s Pioneers, (coached by Carolyn Nicholson and Heather Belovin) each savoring a 2-1 record so far for this 2018 season. In Minor Girl’s division, Walsh Properties’ Eagles kept it hot celebrating their 10-3 win over Elegante’s Firebirds. While the challenge was on, all girls played with great sportsmanship and a fun time was had by all.

Our Pee Wee Girls and Boys T-Ball divisions continue to delight coaches and parents alike while kids are having fun learning baseball fundamentals and the values of good sportsmanship.
